  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. We're continuing our series in the book of Romans. You remember that Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD.

  3. It's called Romans because it is written to the churches in the city of Rome and this letter is about the gospel, about the good news of Jesus' life and death and resurrection.

  4. And as I've done the last couple weeks, I'm going to remind you again where we are at in the argument, the flow of the book of Romans because it can be complicated at times.

  5. In chapter 5, we talked about the fact that we are saved by Jesus' life and death and resurrection. We are not saved by our works. We're not saved by anything you do.

  6. Chapter 6 then goes on to say, okay, you are saved not by your works but by Christ's work and but you can't do whatever you want.

  7. You still have to live a life of holiness, which then takes us to this next question which we're still answering in chapter 8, which is how do we do that?

  8. How do we live that life of obedience to God? So chapter 7 then goes on to say what the answer is not.

  9. Chapter 7 says the answer is not more rules. The law cannot create holiness. Holiness does not come from more rules.

  10. Which then now we come to the payoff in chapter 8, which gives us finally the answer. Paul tells us holiness comes by the Spirit of God.

  11. And so chapter 8 is a chapter about life in a Spirit. Life empowered by God's Spirit, the Holy Spirit.

  12. Two weeks ago, verses 5 through 8, we talked about how we live by the Spirit.

  13. We live by the Spirit by setting our mind on the things of the Spirit.

  14. The things of the Spirit are Jesus Christ and His work, His life, His death, His resurrection, and all the benefits that flow to us from that.

  15. So we're living life, all of life, in light of Christ's resurrection. That's how we live in the Spirit.

  16. Then last week, verses 9 through 11, we saw that God, by His Spirit, also gives us new life.

  17. It gives us new life, both now and in the future.

  18. We talked about the fact that Christianity is not just or merely new beliefs and new behaviors.

  19. It is also a new power at work within you and a new heart.

  20. Because God, by His Holy Spirit, has taken up residence in your life.

  21. Jesus lives in you.

  22. And that happens by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

  23. We have life now as the Spirit's at work, convicting us of sin, assuring us of God's love, making the gospel clear, among many other things.

  24. We have life in the future as we have a resurrection body.

  25. We get a new body that will not decay, that will live forever, that won't have sin and temptation, sickness, and disease.

  26. So that, I've caught us up.

  27. That's where we ended last week.

  28. We ended with the new body, the resurrection life that we look forward to.

  29. This week, we're continuing this same overarching question of how we live in holiness, how we walk by the Spirit.

  30. And we have a specific question this week, which is why?

  31. Why do we say no to sin and yes to righteousness?

  32. Why should you obey God?

  33. And what does the Holy Spirit have to do with that?

  34. By the way, I bid off more than I could chew for this week.

  35. It was extremely ambitious, thinking we would make it all the way from verse 12 to verse 15.

  36. We are only looking at verses 12 and 13.

  37. I'm not even going to read 14 and 15 for you.

  38. So 14 and 15 are in your worship guide.

  39. They are a problem for Monday, Matthew.

  40. But it is Sunday, Matthew.

  41. So I'm going to preach the same strategy we've been using, straight line from top to bottom.

  42. So with that, I invite you to turn with me to Romans chapter 8, starting at verse 12,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  43. which you will find page 8 of your worship guide.

  44. Remember, as we come here, that this is God's word.

  45. Jeremiah chapter 23 tells us that God's word is like a hammer that breaks a rock into pieces,

    Jeremiah 23 chapter mention

  46. which is a way of saying that there is nothing so powerful that God's word is not more powerful still.

  47. And so that's why I invite you to read with me now Romans chapter 8, verse 12.

    Romans 8:12

  48. So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.

  49. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die.

  50. But if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

  51. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  52. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you and praise you again for your many gifts to us and your mercy and your grace,

  53. especially the gift of your Holy Spirit that comes and gives us new resurrection life.

  54. We ask that you would pour out the Holy Spirit here and now in a powerful and extra special way among us as we come to your word,

  55. that you would open up our eyes, you would unstop our ears, you'd clear our minds, you'd soften our hearts,

  56. that we would be able to hear and see and understand and believe everything that you've written in your word.

  57. And we ask these things not because we have earned them or deserve them.

  58. We know that we haven't and we don't.

  59. We simply ask for them in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  60. Amen.

  61. I want you all to imagine with me, we're going to do a thought experiment,

  62. that you have two things.

  63. You have a free Saturday afternoon and you have an extra $1,000.

  64. Okay?

  65. There's a catch though.

  66. You have to spend that afternoon with someone and the person you spend the afternoon with,

  67. you have to give them the $1,000.

  68. So you have this free afternoon, you have this $1,000, but it's not actually yours, you have to give away.

  69. So that's catch one.

  70. There's another catch, which is you only have two options for who receives this.

  71. Okay?

  72. Option one, you can spend the afternoon with someone who has mistreated you, stolen from you,

  73. lied about you, and lied to you.

  74. So that's option one.

  75. That's one person you can spend the afternoon with.

  76. Second option, you can spend the afternoon with a friend who has sacrificed for you,

  77. helped you,

  78. and at one point, this friend even saved your life.

  79. Now, who do you choose?

  80. Tough question, right?

  81. No, it's a stupid question.

  82. Of course, you're going to spend it with a second person, right?

  83. That's obvious.

  84. Why would you even consider the first person?

  85. First person doesn't make any sense.

  86. Of course, your friend will receive all of this.

  87. We might even say,

  88. you owe that to them.

  89. It would be scandalous, actually,

  90. if you gave it to the person who mistreated you.

  91. And that, my friends, is exactly what Paul is saying here in verse 12.

  92. He starts with a so then,

  93. which means in light of everything we've looked at in the previous verses.

  94. And what have we looked at?

  95. Life in the Holy Spirit.

  96. So so then, because of Jesus' death and resurrection

  97. that results in the gift of the Holy Spirit,

  98. which gives you both new life now and in the future.

  99. Because of that, we're debtors.

  100. We owe someone something.

  101. But we need to be clear who we don't owe anything to.

  102. We don't owe anything to the flesh.

  103. We don't owe anything to live according to the flesh.

  104. And so once again, I'm going to remind you what the flesh is.

  105. Same definition from the last two weeks on page seven of your worship guide.

  106. The flesh is human nature as corrupted, directed, and controlled by sin.

  107. Remember our question, why?

  108. Why do you obey God?

  109. Well, you obey God because you don't owe sin anything.

  110. You obey God because you don't owe sin anything.

  111. And because you do owe God everything.

  112. You don't sin.

  113. You obey God because you don't owe sin anything.

  114. And because you do owe God everything.

  115. And you owe God everything because of Jesus' resurrection

  116. and the new life that he gives to you.

  117. The new life from the Holy Spirit that gives you

  118. something now, gives you something in the future.

  119. Verse 12, we are debtors.

  120. You're just not debtors to the flesh.

  121. You're debtors to God.

  122. Why do we say no to sin?

  123. We say no to sin because we owe it to God.

  124. We owe it to God because of everything that's come before in chapter 8.

  125. Remember, that's why Paul says,

  126. So then, we owe it to God because the gift of life given to us through the Holy Spirit.

  127. Now, the word owe here can sound a little bit negative.

  128. We could end up in a weird place if we take it too far

  129. because God's gift of salvation is a gift.

  130. We're not meant to think of it as we have to repay God somehow.

  131. That's not what Paul's getting at.

  132. I want you to go back to our opening illustration.

  133. Why did you choose person two?

  134. At least, I hope that's who you chose.

  135. You chose person two because of the great love that they've shown you.

  136. Right?

  137. Spending the afternoon with them is not burdensome.

  138. You don't think to yourself,

  139. Wow, I really, you know, I really just wanted to take a nap.

  140. I hate that I have to be with this person who's been so kind to me.

  141. No, it's a delight.

  142. I think that's an easy choice.

  143. Of course, I want to spend the afternoon with them.

  144. You're not resentful that you have to give them your $1,000.

  145. No, you're thrilled.

  146. You're thrilled that you're able to do that.

  147. It's small compared with what they've done.

  148. That's what Paul's telling us.

  149. Obedience comes from hearts that have been melted by the gospel.

  150. We're thrilled.

  151. We're thrilled.

  152. By God's grace.

  153. It's a delight.

  154. By the way,

  155. God's mercy and grace and love to us

  156. must capture our hearts.

  157. If you're a Christian,

  158. we've talked about this over and over,

  159. that

  160. is what drives you to the new life.

  161. If you really understand what Paul's been saying,

  162. verses 1 through 11 of chapter 8,

  163. everything else in your life

  164. pales in comparison.

  165. If you really understand,

  166. if you grasp what it means

  167. that you are indwelt by the Holy Spirit of God

  168. who is at work giving you

  169. new love, affection, and power,

  170. everything else is small in comparison.

  171. So when sin comes calling,

  172. and suggests to you,

  173. commands you,

  174. tries to coerce you

  175. to disobey God,

  176. you can talk back to it.

  177. You can say,

  178. you know what?

  179. You're not in charge anymore.

  180. In fact,

  181. you can even say it out loud if it helps.

  182. You can say,

  183. you don't run this place anymore.

  184. And I don't owe you anything.

  185. In fact,

  186. quite the opposite.

  187. I'm going to give myself

  188. to the one who loves me.

  189. I'm going to give myself

  190. to the one

  191. who's given me new life

  192. through the Spirit.

  193. We are debtors.

  194. Now,

  195. we don't just say yes to righteousness

  196. because we're debtors.

  197. Paul goes on in the next verse

  198. to give us his second reason.

  199. We say yes

  200. because it is a choice

  201. between life and death.

  202. verse 13.

  203. For if you live

  204. according to the flesh,

  205. you will die.

  206. We have to have some qualifications here,

  207. remind you some basics.

  208. This is going even back

  209. to chapter 5.

  210. You are not saved

  211. by your works.

  212. But,

  213. God does produce works

  214. in those he saves.

  215. God does not save you

  216. based on anything

  217. you have done

  218. or will do.

  219. But,

  220. and,

  221. those God saves,

  222. he sanctifies.

  223. holiness

  224. comes from

  225. and after

  226. salvation,

  227. but holiness

  228. does

  229. come.

  230. If you belong

  231. to God,

  232. if God has

  233. chosen you,

  234. he will

  235. also

  236. change you.

  237. if God

  238. has chosen you,

  239. he

  240. will

  241. change you.

  242. Put it in a

  243. other way,

  244. if you keep

  245. living

  246. exactly

  247. the same way

  248. as you were living

  249. before,

  250. you

  251. will

  252. die.

  253. Heaven

  254. is not

  255. where you are

  256. headed.

  257. If you keep

  258. living exactly

  259. the same way

  260. you're living

  261. before,

  262. heaven is not

  263. your final

  264. destination.

  265. That is not

  266. the metro line

  267. that you

  268. are on.

  269. Is there

  270. a battle

  271. against sin

  272. in your life?

  273. Are you

  274. fighting against

  275. it?

  276. I certainly

  277. hope so.

  278. sin.

  279. That's the

  280. life of the

  281. Christian.

  282. The life of the

  283. Christian is what

  284. Paul says here.

  285. We're putting

  286. sin to death.

  287. If you are

  288. not

  289. fighting sin,

  290. if you are

  291. not battling

  292. for holiness,

  293. you should

  294. question

  295. whether you

  296. truly belong

  297. to God.

  298. it does

  299. it does

  300. not matter

  301. how much

  302. theology

  303. you know.

  304. It does

  305. not matter

  306. how many

  307. events for

  308. the church

  309. you have

  310. planned.

  311. It does

  312. not matter

  313. how many

  314. Bible studies

  315. you've

  316. attended,

  317. how many

  318. churches

  319. you've been

  320. a part

  321. of.

  322. Fighting

  323. against

  324. sin,

  325. concern

  326. for holiness,

  327. that is

  328. what the

  329. Holy Spirit

  330. stirs up

  331. in the

  332. Christian.

  333. Remember

  334. verse 9

  335. from last

  336. week,

  337. and every

  338. Christian

  339. has the

  340. Holy Spirit.

  341. all said

  342. it already.

  343. If the

  344. Holy Spirit

  345. is not

  346. in you,

  347. you are

  348. not a

  349. Christian.

  350. Is there

  351. a battle

  352. against sin

  353. in your

  354. life?

  355. Are you

  356. fighting

  357. against it?

  358. For if you

  359. live according

  360. to the

  361. flesh,

  362. you will

  363. die.

  364. And if

  365. you think

  366. that's

  367. too harsh,

  368. hear the

  369. words of

  370. our Lord

  371. Jesus in

  372. Matthew

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  373. chapter 7.

  374. Not

  375. everyone who

  376. says to

  377. me,

  378. Lord,

  379. Lord,

  380. will enter

  381. the kingdom

  382. of heaven,

  383. but the

  384. one who

  385. does the

  386. will of

  387. my Father

  388. who is

  389. in heaven.

  390. Do

  391. you

  392. do the

  393. will of

  394. your

  395. Father

  396. who is

  397. in

  398. heaven?

  399. We've

  400. made it

  401. through the

  402. first half

  403. of verse

  404. 13,

  405. which tells

  406. us holiness

  407. is non-negotiable

  408. in the

  409. Christian life.

  410. The second

  411. part of

  412. verse 13

  413. tells us

  414. holiness

  415. takes work.

  416. We play

  417. a part.

  418. So we're

  419. going to

  420. break it

  421. down.

  422. But if

  423. by the

  424. spirit

  425. you put

  426. to death

  427. the deeds

  428. of the

  429. body,

  430. you will

  431. live.

  432. And that

  433. first phrase

  434. is important.

  435. If by

  436. the spirit.

  437. Remember,

  438. this chapter

  439. is answering

  440. this question

  441. Paul's been

  442. getting at,

  443. which is how

  444. do we live

  445. lives of

  446. holiness?

  447. And we've

  448. already seen

  449. it is not

  450. by the

  451. law.

  452. That's

  453. chapter 7.

  454. It is not

  455. by more

  456. rules.

  457. It is not

  458. by gritting

  459. your teeth

  460. harder.

  461. It is not

  462. by pulling

  463. ourselves up

  464. by our

  465. bootstraps.

  466. Remember,

  467. if God

  468. has chosen

  469. you,

  470. he will

  471. change you.

  472. He

  473. will change

  474. you.

  475. It is

  476. by the

  477. spirit.

  478. Some of

  479. you are

  480. familiar with

  481. the Navy

  482. SEAL and

  483. influencer

  484. Jocko

  485. Willink who

  486. says,

  487. only person

  488. who can

  489. fix your

  490. problems

  491. is you.

  492. And that's

  493. actually

  494. false.

  495. It's not

  496. true.

  497. And it's

  498. not true

  499. because your

  500. problems are

  501. too big

  502. for you

  503. to fix.

  504. That's the

  505. bad news

  506. of the

  507. gospel.

  508. You must

  509. change,

  510. and you

  511. cannot

  512. change

  513. yourself.

  514. So what

  515. do you

  516. do?

  517. You need

  518. the new

  519. life that

  520. comes from

  521. the Holy

  522. Spirit.

  523. The new

  524. life that

  525. gives you

  526. new

  527. desires,

  528. new

  529. motivations,

  530. and new

  531. power to

  532. put sin

  533. to death.

  534. Without

  535. the Holy

  536. Spirit at

  537. work in

  538. you,

  539. changing

  540. your

  541. heart

  542. stone

  543. into a

  544. heart

  545. of

  546. flesh,

  547. you have

  548. no

  549. hope.

  550. By

  551. the

  552. Spirit.

  553. Now those

  554. new desires,

  555. those new

  556. motivations,

  557. that new

  558. power also

  559. leads to

  560. new action.

  561. That's the

  562. next part

  563. of 13.

  564. Put to

  565. death

  566. the deeds

  567. of the

  568. body.

  569. And we've

  570. talked about

  571. this before.

  572. this word

  573. body does

  574. not mean

  575. that the

  576. body is

  577. bad.

  578. What it

  579. means is

  580. this.

  581. When you

  582. sin,

  583. whenever you

  584. sin,

  585. it happens

  586. in your

  587. body in

  588. one way

  589. or another.

  590. Your sin

  591. is an

  592. embodied

  593. act.

  594. Sin is a

  595. presence that

  596. expresses itself

  597. in your

  598. embodied

  599. existence.

  600. And so you

  601. must,

  602. you must put

  603. those sinful

  604. acts to

  605. death.

  606. You must

  607. end them.

  608. You must

  609. wage war

  610. against the

  611. presence of

  612. sin.

  613. Remember

  614. chapter 6,

  615. we talked

  616. about the

  617. war against

  618. sin,

  619. which tells

  620. us obedience

  621. requires specific

  622. commitment to

  623. change.

  624. It is one

  625. thing to

  626. say,

  627. yes,

  628. I'm going

  629. to follow

  630. God.

  631. It is

  632. another thing

  633. to say,

  634. I am going

  635. to stay

  636. away from

  637. people and

  638. places that

  639. cause me to

  640. drink too

  641. much.

  642. it's another

  643. thing to

  644. say,

  645. I am going

  646. to put a

  647. filter or

  648. accountability

  649. software on

  650. my phone and

  651. my computer.

  652. It is another

  653. thing to say,

  654. I'm going to

  655. work on a

  656. budget so

  657. that I can

  658. be generous

  659. consistently.

  660. It is another

  661. thing to say,

  662. I'm going to

  663. talk to a

  664. friend and

  665. say,

  666. yes,

  667. I'm tempted

  668. to gossip.

  669. Would you

  670. help me?

  671. It is another

  672. thing to go

  673. to bed on

  674. Saturday night.

  675. So you

  676. can come

  677. here on

  678. Sunday morning

  679. to worship

  680. the living

  681. God.

  682. Putting sin

  683. to death,

  684. putting to

  685. death the

  686. deeds of

  687. the body

  688. means we

  689. take action,

  690. empowered by

  691. the Holy

  692. Spirit,

  693. enabled by

  694. our new

  695. power,

  696. love,

  697. motivation,

  698. and desire,

  699. but action

  700. nonetheless.

  701. Action

  702. towards holiness.

  703. The person

  704. who is fighting

  705. this war

  706. doesn't dismiss

  707. their sin.

  708. They don't

  709. say things

  710. like,

  711. oh,

  712. you know,

  713. there's grace

  714. for that.

  715. God accepts

  716. me as I

  717. am.

  718. No,

  719. they're in a

  720. fight.

  721. They are

  722. putting to

  723. death the

  724. deeds of

  725. the body.

  726. Paul doesn't

  727. leave any room

  728. for us to

  729. wonder,

  730. right?

  731. I'm not sure

  732. if there's

  733. anything more

  734. radical than

  735. putting to

  736. death.

  737. He's saying

  738. there needs

  739. to be something

  740. that is

  741. aggressive and

  742. determined.

  743. You are

  744. taking sin

  745. by the

  746. throat

  747. and strangling

  748. it.

  749. Not cozying

  750. up with

  751. it,

  752. killing it.

  753. Remember,

  754. Romans is

  755. the fifth

  756. gospel,

  757. which means

  758. that what

  759. Paul teaches

  760. Jesus

  761. first.

  762. Jesus teaches

  763. this in

  764. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  765. chapter 5.

  766. If your

  767. right eye

  768. causes you

  769. to sin,

  770. tear it

  771. out and

  772. throw it

  773. away.

  774. For it

  775. is better

  776. that you

  777. lose one

  778. of your

  779. members than

  780. that your

  781. whole body

  782. be thrown

  783. into hell.

  784. And if

  785. your right

  786. hand causes

  787. you to sin,

  788. cut it off

  789. and throw

  790. it away.

  791. For it

  792. is better

  793. that you

  794. lose one

  795. of your

  796. members than

  797. that your

  798. whole body

  799. go into

  800. hell.

  801. For if

  802. you live

  803. according to

  804. the flesh,

  805. you will

  806. die.

  807. But if

  808. by the

  809. spirit

  810. you put

  811. to death

  812. the deeds

  813. of the

  814. body,

  815. you will

  816. live.

  817. Now there's

  818. a million

  819. things we

  820. could say,

  821. I could say

  822. about the

  823. fight against

  824. sin,

  825. a hundred

  826. qualifications,

  827. and my

  828. goal.

  829. this morning

  830. as I

  831. sometimes

  832. tell you

  833. when we're

  834. up against

  835. a massive

  836. topic,

  837. it's

  838. to say

  839. something

  840. on

  841. everything.

  842. And so

  843. as we

  844. think about

  845. our battle

  846. against sin,

  847. putting sin

  848. to death,

  849. the war

  850. of obedience,

  851. I want to

  852. point out

  853. two and

  854. only two

  855. things to

  856. you.

  857. Two pastoral

  858. notes.

  859. First,

  860. if you want

  861. progress in

  862. your battle

  863. against sin,

  864. you cannot

  865. do it

  866. alone.

  867. if you

  868. want to

  869. put sin

  870. to death,

  871. that is

  872. not a

  873. solo

  874. journey.

  875. I've said

  876. before,

  877. the opposite

  878. of,

  879. and this

  880. doesn't come

  881. from me,

  882. the opposite

  883. of addiction

  884. is not

  885. sobriety,

  886. the opposite

  887. of addiction

  888. is connection.

  889. God has

  890. not designed

  891. us to

  892. kill sin

  893. by ourselves.

  894. you have

  895. to tell

  896. someone,

  897. someone who

  898. will help

  899. you.

  900. When someone

  901. asks for help,

  902. I say,

  903. wow,

  904. I'm so proud

  905. of you.

  906. You are

  907. doing the

  908. exact right

  909. thing

  910. to kill

  911. sin,

  912. bringing it

  913. out into

  914. the light.

  915. The Bible

  916. has something

  917. to say about

  918. this.

  919. James

    James 5 chapter mention

  920. chapter 5,

  921. therefore,

  922. confess your

  923. sins to

  924. one another

  925. and pray

  926. for one

  927. another

  928. that you

  929. may be

  930. healed.

  931. Second,

  932. in our

  933. battle against

  934. sin,

  935. we must

  936. remember

  937. that God's

  938. law

  939. is life.

  940. As we've

  941. seen many

  942. times in the

  943. book of

  944. Romans,

  945. it is in

  946. God's

  947. glory

  948. that we

  949. discover our

  950. good.

  951. In other

  952. words,

  953. it is the

  954. wrong way

  955. to think

  956. about this

  957. when you're

  958. tempted to

  959. say,

  960. you know,

  961. I'll

  962. obey,

  963. I'll

  964. miss out

  965. now,

  966. so I

  967. can gain

  968. in the

  969. future.

  970. I'll

  971. forgo all

  972. these

  973. wonderful,

  974. beautiful

  975. things with

  976. some kind

  977. of hope

  978. of heaven.

  979. That's the

  980. wrong view

  981. because you

  982. are not

  983. missing out

  984. now,

  985. you are

  986. gaining

  987. now.

  988. God's

  989. law is

  990. always the

  991. path to

  992. life.

  993. God

  994. has designed

  995. the universe

  996. in a

  997. certain way

  998. and his

  999. commands tell

  1000. us how to

  1001. live within

  1002. the grain

  1003. of the

  1004. universe,

  1005. the way

  1006. it actually

  1007. brings us

  1008. joy and

  1009. hope and

  1010. peace.

  1011. Remember

  1012. verse 6,

  1013. to set the

  1014. mind on

  1015. the spirit

  1016. is life

  1017. and peace.

  1018. your heavenly

  1019. father has

  1020. given you

  1021. his commands

  1022. not as a

  1023. killjoy,

  1024. but as

  1025. one who

  1026. desires

  1027. your good.

  1028. Do you

  1029. want to be

  1030. protected from

  1031. the ravages of

  1032. this world?

  1033. Stay within

  1034. the fences

  1035. that God

  1036. has given.

  1037. And when

  1038. you see

  1039. someone who

  1040. you think is

  1041. better off

  1042. than you

  1043. are,

  1044. because

  1045. they're not

  1046. constrained by

  1047. Christian ethics,

  1048. you know,

  1049. they're experiencing,

  1050. enjoying all

  1051. these things that

  1052. you're not because

  1053. of their sin.

  1054. Remember

  1055. this,

  1056. that person

  1057. is neither

  1058. joyful nor

  1059. peaceful.

  1060. They do

  1061. not have

  1062. what only

  1063. the spirit

  1064. of God

  1065. can give.

  1066. God's

  1067. law is

  1068. the way

  1069. the life.

  1070. I remember

  1071. years and

  1072. years ago

  1073. I met

  1074. with a

  1075. Christian

  1076. counselor and

  1077. I was telling

  1078. him about,

  1079. you know,

  1080. this other

  1081. person in my

  1082. life who

  1083. had all

  1084. these things

  1085. and he

  1086. just looked

  1087. at me and

  1088. he said,

  1089. at what cost?

  1090. At what cost?

  1091. God,

  1092. your father

  1093. longs to

  1094. give you

  1095. life.

  1096. Longs to

  1097. give you

  1098. life now,

  1099. he longs to

  1100. give you life

  1101. in the future.

  1102. We'll end

  1103. with this,

  1104. you see this on

  1105. page eight

  1106. of your worship

  1107. guide.

  1108. A fish is

  1109. only free

  1110. when it is

  1111. bound to

  1112. the water.

  1113. A bird

  1114. is only free

  1115. when it is

  1116. bound to

  1117. the air.

  1118. And we

  1119. are only

  1120. truly free

  1121. when we

  1122. are bound

  1123. to God.

  1124. Walking

  1125. according to

  1126. his will

  1127. is not

  1128. an oppressive

  1129. burden.

  1130. It is a

  1131. liberating

  1132. blessing.

  1133. living in

  1134. obedience to

  1135. God

  1136. revives our

  1137. souls,

  1138. makes us

  1139. wise,

  1140. and fills

  1141. us

  1142. with joy.

  1143. For if you

  1144. live according

  1145. to the flesh,

  1146. you will die.

  1147. But if by the

  1148. spirit you put

  1149. to death the

  1150. deeds of the

  1151. body,

  1152. you will

  1153. live.

  1154. Let's pray.

  1155. Our

  1156. Father in

  1157. heaven,

  1158. we do

  1159. praise you

  1160. and thank

  1161. you that

  1162. you come

  1163. to give us

  1164. life and

  1165. give us

  1166. life abundantly.

  1167. We ask

  1168. that we

  1169. would see

  1170. your beauty,

  1171. your love,

  1172. that as we

  1173. meditate on

  1174. the great

  1175. blessings that

  1176. are ours in

  1177. the gospel,

  1178. it would warm

  1179. and soften

  1180. our hearts and

  1181. we would

  1182. respond with

  1183. joy and

  1184. obedience to

  1185. you.

  1186. We ask all

  1187. of these

  1188. things,

  1189. in Jesus'

  1190. name.

  1191. Amen.

  1192. I invite

  1193. you to

  1194. stand for

  1195. our closing

  1196. hymn.
