  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. We're continuing this morning our series in the book of Romans. You'll remember that Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD.

  3. And it's called Romans because it's written to the churches in the city of Rome and this letter is about the gospel.

  4. It's about the good news of Jesus' life and death and resurrection.

  5. And we are now in the middle of chapter 8 which is about life in the Spirit.

  6. That is life in the Holy Spirit.

  7. And we are moving kind of from this discussion we've been having about holiness to all the benefits that come to Christians from the Holy Spirit.

  8. So we're moving from talking about the life of holiness where we've been for a while to talking about all the benefits, all the blessings that God gives to his people through his Spirit.

  9. And that's where we'll be in many ways through the rest of the chapter.

  10. And so as in previous weeks we're going to go from top to bottom.

  11. I invite you to turn with me to Romans chapter 8 starting at verse 14 which you'll find on page 7 of your worship guide.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  12. And as we come to this passage remember that this is God's word.

  13. Proverbs chapter 30 tells us every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  14. He's a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  15. So that's why we read now Romans chapter 8 starting at verse 14.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  16. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

  17. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear.

  18. But you have received the spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry Abba Father.

  19. The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

  20. And if children then heirs.

  21. Heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.

  22. Provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

  23. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  24. Our Father in heaven we do come again this morning to thank you and praise you.

  25. For your words that you've given us.

  26. To show us the great mercy and grace that you've given us in Jesus Christ.

  27. Show us our great need for that very same grace.

  28. And we ask that you would be with us by your spirit in a special way here and now as we look into your word.

  29. That you would open our eyes.

  30. You would unstop our ears.

  31. You'd clear our minds.

  32. You'd soften our hearts.

  33. That we would be able to see and hear and understand and believe.

  34. Everything written in your word.

  35. And we ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  36. Amen.

  37. Some people, many people, consider Romans chapter 8 to be among the greatest chapters in the entire Bible.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  38. If not, in fact, the greatest chapter.

  39. And it's for good reason.

  40. This is the payoff of the work that we've done over the last number of months.

  41. Paul has explained that salvation comes not by works but by God's grace.

  42. That was chapter 5.

  43. And then he spent chapters 6 and 7 in the beginning of chapter 8 talking about this question of holiness.

  44. Are we still holy even though we're not saved by works?

  45. Yes.

  46. That's chapter 6.

  47. Does that holiness come by the law?

  48. No.

  49. That's chapter 7.

  50. Holiness instead comes by God's spirit.

  51. That's chapter 8.

  52. And now that Paul has clarified this need for holiness, the source of holiness, that it comes from the work of the Holy Spirit,

  53. he's going to explain to us the great benefits, the great blessings that come from our salvation.

  54. Now as we come to this portion, we need to remember where we left off last week because verse 14 picks up from where verse 13 left us.

  55. You'll remember verse 13 tells us life comes from walking in the spirit.

  56. Life now and life in the future comes from obedience, from living lives of holiness.

  57. Which raises a question that takes us to verse 14.

  58. Why is that so?

  59. Why is it that our lives of holiness are the path to life?

  60. Paul goes on to tell us verse 14, because walking in the spirit, obeying God, means that you are a son.

  61. Verse 14.

  62. For all who are led by the spirit of God are sons of God.

  63. First, it's important to remember, to know what Paul means here by being led by the spirit.

  64. He means what we've talked about previously the last number of weeks.

  65. Being led by the spirit in context means that you are fighting against sin as empowered and enabled by God's spirit.

  66. That's what it means to be led by the spirit.

  67. In other words, it does not mean, sometimes Christians import a meaning from outside of the text,

  68. being led by the spirit does not mean that God is going to tell you by his Holy Spirit which car to buy.

  69. That is not what it means to be led by the spirit.

  70. That's not what Paul's talking about in Romans 8.

  71. No, he's talking about the obedience that comes from a new heart.

  72. So you'll see on page 7, the leading of the Holy Spirit is his continual work to influence God's children

  73. to understand the Holy Scriptures and obey them.

  74. Are you in the battle?

  75. Are you putting sin to death as we talked about last week?

  76. Are you doing this work to understand the Holy Scriptures and obey them?

  77. If so, you are being led by the spirit.

  78. You're living the life that comes by the spirit.

  79. Those who put sin to death have God's Holy Spirit.

  80. Okay, that's review in a sense.

  81. Now we talked in verse 9 about the fact that all Christians have the spirit.

  82. Verse 14, though, tells us something new.

  83. Those who have the spirit are sons of God.

  84. Now we have to understand here the meaning of sons.

  85. Son is what Paul uses because in his context, first century Rome, that was inheritance language.

  86. Sons were the heirs.

  87. So if you are a woman and you are a Christian, guess what?

  88. You are a son of God.

  89. And you're a son of God in the sense that you're an heir.

  90. You receive the inheritance.

  91. It's helpful that Paul then in verses 16 and 17 also uses the word children.

  92. So we're not left just with the word son.

  93. But he's saying, and we're going to get to this in a little bit, in verse 17,

  94. the inheritance is yours.

  95. It is not simply or merely that God has forgiven your sins on behalf of Christ and credited you with his righteousness.

  96. No, even more than that, he's adopted you.

  97. You're his child.

  98. The inheritance is all yours.

  99. So last week, living by the spirit, we ended seeing that it leads to life, right?

  100. Life now, life in the future.

  101. Paul now adds on to that.

  102. It is not only that the spirit leads to life.

  103. It also leads to inheritance and intimacy.

  104. The spirit does not just lead to life, although it does.

  105. The spirit also leads to inheritance and intimacy.

  106. First, verse 15, Paul tells us about the intimacy of our sonship.

  107. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,

  108. but you have received the spirit of adoption as sons by whom we cry, Abba, Father.

  109. So he starts in the negative.

  110. No, there is no spirit of slavery to fall back into fear.

  111. Paul here is referring to what it was like when sin was controlling your life.

  112. Remember, we spent a ton of time talking about this in chapter 6.

  113. Chapter 6, we dove deep into what is the power center of your heart, of your life?

  114. Is it a power center controlled by sin, or is it a power center controlled by the Holy Spirit?

  115. And if you're a Christian, it is the latter.

  116. The Holy Spirit rules and reigns in your life.

  117. So fear and slavery, those are all behind you.

  118. There's no need to fall back into that.

  119. No, actually, you have something now positive.

  120. You've received the spirit of adoption as sons.

  121. Received reminds us of what we saw a couple weeks ago,

  122. that every Christian has the Holy Spirit.

  123. There are not some special Christians with the spirit and normal, regular Christians without it.

  124. No, it is what you receive as God's gift as one of his children.

  125. Every Christian is given the spirit.

  126. And it's given by grace as a gift.

  127. The spirit of adoption as sons is reaffirming verse 14,

  128. which is that those with the spirit are sons.

  129. They are heirs.

  130. Even more than that, the Holy Spirit communicates this reality to you

  131. in the deepest places of your heart.

  132. The Holy Spirit communicates this reality to you

  133. that you are one of God's children in the deepest places of your heart.

  134. That's what Paul is getting at when he says,

  135. by whom we cry, Abba, Father.

  136. By whom?

  137. Meaning it's by the spirit.

  138. The spirit.

  139. The spirit.

  140. God's Holy Spirit.

  141. Enables and empowers us to cry out to God as our father in prayer.

  142. The Holy Spirit enables and empowers us to cry out to God as our father in prayer.

  143. And it's in that sense that the Holy Spirit is the spirit of adoption.

  144. So our God is not a distant or far off God,

  145. but a God who gives us the intimacy of a child with their father.

  146. Our God is not a distant or far off God.

  147. He's a God who by his spirit assures us and gives us the intimacy of a child with their father.

  148. This word cry is significant as well.

  149. Notice what Paul doesn't say.

  150. He doesn't say pray,

  151. although this cry is a type of prayer.

  152. He does not say that we call God father,

  153. although we do,

  154. because it's not strong enough.

  155. No, we cry.

  156. The Greek word here is a crying out,

  157. almost a wailing.

  158. We cry to our father,

  159. reminding us, telling us, teaching us

  160. that God our father is the one to whom we run when we are in distress.

  161. God our father is the one to whom we run in our distress.

  162. We feel, because of the Holy Spirit,

  163. deep in our souls that we belong to God.

  164. And so because of the Holy Spirit,

  165. in and with the Holy Spirit,

  166. it comes out of us as a cry.

  167. A cry for help.

  168. A cry for aid.

  169. And the point is this.

  170. Because of the Holy Spirit,

  171. when trouble comes,

  172. we run to God in prayer.

  173. Because of the Holy Spirit,

  174. when trouble comes,

  175. we bring it to our father unfiltered.

  176. We bring him the deepest pains and longings of our heart,

  177. which helps us to begin to see

  178. why Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  179. is one of,

  180. if not the greatest chapter in the Bible.

  181. You did not receive the spirit of slavery

  182. to fall back into fear,

  183. but you have received the spirit of adoption as sons

  184. by whom we cry,

  185. Abba, Father.

  186. Verse 16 goes on to tell us

  187. why we can be so bold.

  188. The spirit himself bears witness with our spirit

  189. that we are children of God.

  190. In other words,

  191. the Holy Spirit gives you

  192. the confidence and the boldness

  193. that you need

  194. to approach God in this way.

  195. And even more than that,

  196. the Holy Spirit gives you

  197. a deep and firmly rooted certainty

  198. that God is your father.

  199. The Holy Spirit gives you

  200. this unshakable trust and confidence

  201. that you belong to him.

  202. Do you have certainty

  203. that God is your father?

  204. Do you know

  205. beyond a shadow of a doubt

  206. that you belong to him?

  207. Do you know it,

  208. we might say,

  209. deep down?

  210. Does it run

  211. all the way

  212. to your roots?

  213. I hope it does.

  214. What Paul is telling us

  215. is that when it does,

  216. that is because

  217. of the work

  218. of the Holy Spirit.

  219. God's spirit

  220. at work in your heart

  221. assuring you,

  222. reminding you,

  223. convincing you

  224. that you belong to him.

  225. He bears witness

  226. with our spirit

  227. that we are children

  228. of God.

  229. Spirit gives you

  230. powerful confidence.

  231. Spirit gives you

  232. this felt sense

  233. of God's love.

  234. Remember we talked

  235. about that

  236. in Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5:5

  237. verse 5.

  238. The love of God

  239. poured into your hearts

  240. by the Holy Spirit.

  241. It doesn't say

  242. the love of God

  243. poured into your mind

  244. by the Holy Spirit,

  245. although of course

  246. our minds understand

  247. God's love.

  248. No, God's love

  249. poured into your hearts.

  250. It's a felt sense

  251. of God's love

  252. given to you

  253. by his spirit.

  254. And it's not something

  255. that you can generate

  256. on your own.

  257. Do you have confidence

  258. that God is your father

  259. and that you belong to him?

  260. If you do,

  261. that is because of God's

  262. spirit at work

  263. in you.

  264. The spirit himself

  265. bears witness

  266. with our spirit

  267. that we are children

  268. of God.

  269. That is the intimacy,

  270. the connection

  271. that comes

  272. because you are a son,

  273. whether you're a man

  274. or a woman

  275. because you're a son

  276. of God.

  277. You're one of God's children.

  278. Belong to him.

  279. Now I said with sonship

  280. there is both inheritance

  281. and intimacy.

  282. Now we've seen the intimacy.

  283. Now verse 17

  284. takes us

  285. to the inheritance.

  286. And if children,

  287. then heirs.

  288. Heirs of God

  289. and fellow

  290. heirs

  291. with Christ.

  292. Now if I came to you

  293. and I said,

  294. you know what?

  295. There is a will

  296. and you're in it.

  297. What would you want to know?

  298. What am I getting?

  299. What does the will give to me?

  300. Does the will give me

  301. the baseball card collection

  302. or does it give me the stocks?

  303. You know,

  304. how much is it worth?

  305. We have the same question here.

  306. If we are heirs,

  307. if we're in the will,

  308. what is it exactly

  309. that Paul is telling us

  310. we're going to get?

  311. Of course the inheritance

  312. is great.

  313. We could spend

  314. multiple sermons

  315. talking about it.

  316. I will remind you

  317. of a few things

  318. that you already know.

  319. If you are

  320. an heir of God

  321. and a fellow heir

  322. with Christ Jesus,

  323. you are inheriting

  324. a world

  325. without sin.

  326. If you are one

  327. of God's sons,

  328. whether you're a man

  329. or a woman,

  330. you are going to receive

  331. a new body.

  332. It's going to be a body

  333. without sickness,

  334. disease,

  335. or decay.

  336. You are going to rule

  337. with God

  338. over the entire earth.

  339. And even more

  340. than all that,

  341. saving the best

  342. for last,

  343. you will have

  344. God himself.

  345. God's promise

  346. in the Old Testament,

  347. his covenant promise

  348. to his people

  349. will be fully

  350. and finally true.

  351. And that promise

  352. is this,

  353. I will be your God,

  354. you will be my people,

  355. and I will dwell

  356. with you forever.

  357. forever.

  358. In fact,

  359. Revelation chapter 21

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  360. gives us

  361. an idea

  362. of what the inheritance

  363. looks like.

  364. And I heard a loud voice

  365. from the throne

  366. saying,

  367. behold,

  368. the dwelling place

  369. of God

  370. is with man.

  371. That's God's presence,

  372. that's part of your inheritance.

  373. He will dwell with them

  374. and they will be his people

  375. and God himself

  376. will be with them

  377. as their God.

  378. that's the best part.

  379. Because God

  380. is with you,

  381. will be with you

  382. as your God,

  383. this will also happen.

  384. He will wipe away

  385. every tear

  386. from their eyes

  387. and death

  388. shall be no more.

  389. Neither

  390. shall there be mourning

  391. nor crying

  392. nor pain

  393. anymore

  394. for the former things

  395. have passed

  396. away.

  397. That's your inheritance.

  398. That's what you have

  399. to look forward to.

  400. That is what is named

  401. for you

  402. in the will.

  403. That's what comes

  404. because you

  405. are a son

  406. of God.

  407. And how do you get

  408. this inheritance?

  409. How do you become

  410. a son?

  411. Now Paul tells us

  412. it's because

  413. verse 17

  414. we are fellow

  415. heirs

  416. with Christ.

  417. He'll tell us

  418. later in chapter 8

  419. in verse 29

  420. that Jesus

  421. is the first

  422. born

  423. among

  424. many

  425. brothers.

  426. So you

  427. are God's

  428. son,

  429. his heir,

  430. his child.

  431. You have the

  432. intimacy

  433. that a son

  434. or a daughter

  435. has with their

  436. father.

  437. and you

  438. have the

  439. inheritance

  440. that comes

  441. to children

  442. in the will

  443. because of

  444. the work

  445. of Jesus

  446. Christ

  447. on your

  448. behalf.

  449. Because of

  450. the first

  451. born son

  452. you

  453. and all

  454. of God's

  455. people

  456. are brought

  457. in

  458. as his

  459. children,

  460. his heirs,

  461. his other

  462. sons.

  463. that's

  464. what you

  465. have.

  466. That's

  467. what's

  468. waiting

  469. for you

  470. because

  471. of

  472. God's

  473. work

  474. by his

  475. son

  476. through

  477. the

  478. spirit.

  479. Finally,

  480. Paul tells us

  481. the path

  482. to

  483. inheritance

  484. runs

  485. through

  486. suffering.

  487. Suffering

  488. comes as

  489. part of

  490. the journey

  491. to the

  492. destination.

  493. Verse 17,

  494. provided we

  495. suffer with

  496. him in

  497. order that

  498. we may

  499. also be

  500. glorified

  501. with

  502. him.

  503. Paul here

  504. is talking

  505. about the

  506. suffering

  507. that comes

  508. to you

  509. because

  510. you're a

  511. Christian.

  512. Remember years

  513. ago we talked

  514. about the fact

  515. there's different

  516. types of

  517. suffering in

  518. the world.

  519. There's

  520. suffering that

  521. you experience

  522. because you

  523. did something

  524. really stupid.

  525. There's

  526. suffering that

  527. you experience

  528. just because

  529. of general

  530. sin in the

  531. world.

  532. You know,

  533. when you

  534. get a

  535. cold or

  536. pneumonia,

  537. that's

  538. because of

  539. sin and

  540. sickness,

  541. general sin.

  542. And then

  543. there's the

  544. suffering that

  545. you experience

  546. as a follower

  547. of Jesus.

  548. Paul here is

  549. talking about

  550. that last

  551. suffering.

  552. He's saying

  553. as you live

  554. in this world

  555. as a

  556. Christian,

  557. it is

  558. unavoidable

  559. that following

  560. Jesus will

  561. bring

  562. hardship.

  563. Paul says

  564. this also in

  565. 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  566. chapter 3,

  567. indeed,

  568. all who

  569. desire to

  570. live a

  571. godly life

  572. in Christ

  573. Jesus will

  574. be persecuted.

  575. So it's

  576. not optional.

  577. Every Christian

  578. in some

  579. way will

  580. in this

  581. world suffer

  582. for the

  583. name of

  584. Jesus

  585. Christ.

  586. Jesus

  587. himself

  588. tells us

  589. that.

  590. John

    John 15 chapter mention

  591. chapter 15,

  592. remember the

  593. word that I

  594. said to you,

  595. a servant

  596. is not

  597. greater than

  598. his master.

  599. If they

  600. persecuted

  601. me,

  602. they will

  603. also

  604. persecute

  605. you.

  606. If they

  607. kept my

  608. word,

  609. they will

  610. also

  611. keep

  612. yours.

  613. In other

  614. words,

  615. as go

  616. the master,

  617. so go

  618. his servants.

  619. As goes

  620. the teacher,

  621. so goes

  622. the students.

  623. as goes

  624. Jesus,

  625. so goes

  626. us.

  627. Jesus

  628. suffered in

  629. this world.

  630. If you

  631. follow him,

  632. you will

  633. too.

  634. Jesus

  635. says the

  636. same thing,

  637. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  638. chapter 5.

  639. Blessed are

  640. those who

  641. are persecuted

  642. for righteousness

  643. sake,

  644. for theirs

  645. is the

  646. kingdom

  647. of heaven.

  648. Suffering

  649. in

  650. glory.

  651. By the

  652. way,

  653. here's a

  654. teaser for

  655. next week.

  656. Verse 18.

  657. We're going

  658. to look only

  659. at verse 18

  660. next week.

  661. Paul says

  662. this,

  663. guess what?

  664. Everything

  665. to come

  666. is so

  667. great,

  668. the future

  669. is so

  670. glorious,

  671. that everything

  672. else fades

  673. in comparison.

  674. The suffering

  675. isn't even

  676. worth talking

  677. about,

  678. given how

  679. amazing

  680. everything

  681. to come

  682. is.

  683. Remember,

  684. I've been

  685. telling you,

  686. and I'll

  687. tell you

  688. again,

  689. that Romans

  690. is the

  691. fifth gospel,

  692. because what

  693. Paul teaches,

  694. Jesus taught

  695. first.

  696. Jesus teaches

  697. that we're

  698. his heirs.

  699. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  700. chapter 5,

  701. again,

  702. blessed are

  703. the meek,

  704. for they

  705. will what?

  706. Inherit

  707. the earth.

  708. Blessed

  709. are the

  710. poor in

  711. spirit,

  712. for theirs

  713. is the

  714. kingdom

  715. of heaven.

  716. Remember,

  717. I said

  718. part of

  719. our inheritance

  720. is that we

  721. will be

  722. with God.

  723. God

  724. himself

  725. is what's

  726. coming.

  727. Blessed

  728. are the

  729. pure in

  730. heart,

  731. for they

  732. will what?

  733. See

  734. God.

  735. Blessed

  736. are the

  737. peacemakers,

  738. for they

  739. shall be

  740. called

  741. sons

  742. of God,

  743. heirs.

  744. And so,

  745. we're going

  746. to sing

  747. now that

  748. very same

  749. hope.

  750. What

  751. reward

  752. will

  753. heaven

  754. bring?

  755. Everlasting

  756. life with

  757. him,

  758. it's the

  759. inheritance

  760. that waits

  761. for you.

  762. There we

  763. will rise

  764. to meet

  765. the Lord,

  766. then sin

  767. and death

  768. will be

  769. destroyed,

  770. and we

  771. will feast

  772. in endless

  773. joy when

  774. Christ is

  775. ours

  776. forever.

  777. Let's

  778. pray.

  779. God,

  780. our

  781. Father in

  782. heaven,

  783. we do

  784. thank you

  785. and praise

  786. you that

  787. you have

  788. not just

  789. saved us

  790. from the

  791. penalty,

  792. the power

  793. of sin,

  794. but you've

  795. also adopted

  796. us as your

  797. sons and

  798. daughters.

  799. You have

  800. given us

  801. the ability

  802. to cry out

  803. to you as

  804. a father,

  805. and you've

  806. assured us

  807. of that by

  808. your spirit

  809. that you

  810. have put

  811. within us.

  812. You've

  813. promised us

  814. a great

  815. inheritance

  816. in the world

  817. to come.

  818. We ask

  819. that you

  820. would use

  821. that to

  822. transform our

  823. hearts and

  824. our minds

  825. and our

  826. lives,

  827. that we

  828. would follow

  829. you and

  830. love you and

  831. obey you in

  832. faith.

  833. We ask all

  834. of these

  835. things in

  836. Jesus' name.

  837. Amen.
