  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you this morning for Easter Sunday we're stepping out of our series in the book of Romans and we are picking up where we left off on our good Friday service if you were here on Friday you know we read through the entirety of John chapter 19 and so now we turn to

    John 19 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 20 with the story of the resurrection. Now there are multiple stories actually going on here in this one story. There is the story of Simon Peter. There's the story of John but the biggest story outside of Jesus' resurrection of course is the story of Mary Magdalene. I'm not going to spoil it for you. I'm not going to tell you up front. I just want you to ask. We're going to ask what is so special

    John 20 chapter mention

  3. about Mary and why does Mary in these 18 verses get more screen time than anyone else? Why does Mary steal the show? We're going to look at two things. We're going to look at Mary's love and Jesus' love and you don't need to remember it because it is the sermon title. It's on page 7 of your worship guide. In fact I invite you to turn with me there to John chapter 20. You'll find it on pages 6 and 7.

    John 20 chapter mention

  4. of your worship guide. And as we turn there remember Psalm 19 tells us that God's word is more precious than gold even the finest gold and it's sweeter than honey even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb. So that's why we read now John chapter 20 starting at verse 1.

    John 20 chapter mention

  5. Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early while it was still dark and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

  6. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple the one whom Jesus loved and said to them

  7. they have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we do not know where they have laid him.

  8. So Peter went out with the other disciple and they were going toward the tomb.

  9. Both of them were running together but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

  10. And stooping to look in he saw the linen cloths lying there but he did not go in.

  11. Then Simon Peter came following him and went into the tomb.

  12. He saw the linen cloths lying there and the face cloth which had been on Jesus' head.

  13. Not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.

  14. Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in and he saw and believed.

  15. For as yet they did not understand the scripture that he must rise from the dead.

  16. Then the disciples went back to their homes.

  17. Verse 11

  18. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb.

  19. And she saw two angels in white sitting where the body of Jesus had lain.

  20. One at the head and one at the feet.

  21. They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?

  22. She said to them, They have taken away my Lord and I do not know where they have laid him.

  23. Having said this she turned around and saw Jesus standing but she did not know that it was Jesus.

  24. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping?

  25. Whom are you seeking?

  26. Supposing him to be the gardener she said to him,

  27. Sir, if you have carried him away tell me where you have laid him and I will take him away.

  28. Jesus said to her, Mary.

  29. She turned and said to him in Aramaic, Rabboni, which means teacher.

  30. Jesus said to her, Do not cling to me for I have not yet ascended to the Father.

  31. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.

  32. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord and that he had said these things to her.

  33. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  34. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you and praise you again most of all for the great mercy and grace that you've shown us in our salvation in Jesus Christ.

  35. We thank you for calling and bringing us together again this morning.

  36. We ask that you would be at work here and now in a special way by your Holy Spirit,

  37. stirring up and softening our hearts that you'd remind us of the great truth of the gospel.

  38. that you'd show us our need for it and that that would lead us to set our eyes on Jesus Christ.

  39. That he'd be more beautiful and glorious to us than anything else.

  40. We ask all of these things in his name. Amen.

  41. Every year around this time, around Easter, there are plenty of memes and jokes and videos

  42. around one of the funniest parts of the Bible, which is right here in this passage.

  43. Okay.

  44. It starts in verse 2.

  45. Mary tells Peter and John that the tomb is empty.

  46. And then,

  47. oh, by the way, it's John because it says, verse 2,

  48. the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved.

  49. John's the author of the gospel of John.

  50. That's why it's called John.

  51. So he's not going to use his own name.

  52. Okay.

  53. So he's referring to himself indirectly.

  54. So Mary tells Peter and John,

  55. and then we find out verse 4,

  56. both of them go running together.

  57. But the other disciple, that is John,

  58. outran Peter and reached the tomb first.

  59. And that's the joke.

  60. Okay.

  61. John, in his own gospel, which he writes,

  62. lets everyone know that he is actually faster than Peter.

  63. And in case we missed it,

  64. he repeats it again in verse 8.

  65. Then the other disciple,

  66. which one?

  67. The one who reached the tomb first.

  68. Okay.

  69. So we have this serious passage,

  70. which is the climax of all of Scripture,

  71. the 66 books that God has given to his people

  72. in the New Testament and the Old Testament.

  73. Jesus has risen from the dead.

  74. He's defeated death and sin.

  75. All the promises of God are yes and amen in Jesus Christ.

  76. And John's a faster runner than Peter.

  77. There are many theories to try to explain

  78. why it is so important to John

  79. that we all know that he's a great sprinter.

  80. The one I find most convincing is this.

  81. John is saying that there is nothing that could hold him back.

  82. The alternative to beating Peter

  83. would have been to slow down.

  84. It would have been to hold back.

  85. And he could have done that.

  86. Right?

  87. But John's eyes were on the prize.

  88. Now, whatever theory you believe,

  89. I don't think John is bragging here.

  90. And here's why.

  91. As focused as John was in this passage,

  92. as unwilling as he was to pull back

  93. and wait for Peter,

  94. someone else was more focused.

  95. And that's Mary.

  96. Mary beats all the boys.

  97. John arrives to the tomb in verse 4.

  98. Peter arrives to the tomb in verse 6.

  99. Mary was already there.

  100. In verse 1.

  101. Now, on the first day of the week,

  102. Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early,

  103. and in case we're wondering how early,

  104. while it was still dark.

  105. If John is looking to pat himself on the back for his speed,

  106. he has done a really poor job.

  107. In fact, it's not just that Mary is there first.

  108. Mary is also there last.

  109. Verse 10.

  110. Peter and John go home.

  111. Verse 11.

  112. Mary stays.

  113. And by the way,

  114. if Mary stays in verse 11,

  115. and she was there in verse 1,

  116. and she told Peter and John in verse 2,

  117. we know then that Mary must have made

  118. at least not one,

  119. but two trips to the tomb.

  120. So she's not just there first.

  121. She has lapped them.

  122. John is not shining a spotlight on himself.

  123. The running is not about John's ego.

  124. No.

  125. John, the author of the gospel,

  126. is highlighting Mary.

  127. That brings us back to our question.

  128. Why?

  129. Why does Mary show up earlier and stay later?

  130. To answer that,

  131. we have to remember Mary's backstory.

  132. So there's several Marys in the gospels

  133. that are kind of hard to keep track of.

  134. That's why she's called Mary Magdalene

  135. to distinguish her from all the others.

  136. And in Luke chapter 8,

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  137. we find out that Jesus

  138. had healed Mary Magdalene

  139. of seven demons.

  140. Now seven demons

  141. are not a small number of demons.

  142. Okay?

  143. It's not a small thing

  144. that Jesus had rescued Mary

  145. in this way.

  146. Jesus, in fact,

  147. had rescued her in a huge way.

  148. That's Luke 8

  149. where we find that out.

  150. At the end of Luke 7,

  151. just a few verses before,

  152. Jesus lays out this principle.

  153. And the principle is this.

  154. The one who has been forgiven much

  155. loves much.

  156. The one who has been forgiven little

  157. loves little.

  158. Why was Mary

  159. the one who showed up early

  160. and stayed late?

  161. Mary had been forgiven much.

  162. And so Mary loved much.

  163. Mary had been rescued

  164. from seven demons.

  165. And so Mary was all in

  166. with Jesus.

  167. It's on page seven

  168. of your worship guide.

  169. Jesus had cast seven devils

  170. from Mary.

  171. She had sinned much.

  172. She had been forgiven much.

  173. And she loved much.

  174. John

  175. was not healed

  176. of seven demons.

  177. Nor was Peter.

  178. And so John and Peter

  179. do not understand

  180. the extent

  181. of their need

  182. for rescue

  183. in the way

  184. that Mary does.

  185. Mary knows

  186. more than all the others

  187. how much

  188. Jesus

  189. has saved her

  190. from.

  191. Now you might say

  192. that's not fair.

  193. It's not Peter

  194. and John's fault

  195. that they didn't have

  196. seven demons in them.

  197. And that's true.

  198. It's not their fault

  199. they didn't have

  200. seven demons.

  201. But Peter

  202. and John

  203. did not need

  204. rescue

  205. any less

  206. than Mary.

  207. Peter

  208. and John

  209. just didn't

  210. know

  211. their need

  212. as much

  213. as Mary.

  214. Peter

  215. and John

  216. did not

  217. need

  218. rescue

  219. any less

  220. than Mary

  221. did.

  222. They just

  223. did not

  224. know

  225. their need

  226. as much

  227. as Mary

  228. did.

  229. That's why

  230. Jesus

  231. says

  232. it's easier

  233. for a camel

  234. to enter

  235. the eye

  236. of a needle

  237. than for a rich

  238. person

  239. to enter

  240. heaven.

  241. Not because

  242. the rich

  243. do not

  244. have need

  245. but because

  246. the rich

  247. don't know

  248. their need.

  249. It's hard

  250. to see.

  251. It's hard

  252. to know

  253. how desperately

  254. you need

  255. Jesus

  256. if your

  257. life is

  258. filled

  259. with comfort

  260. and ease.

  261. The point

  262. is this.

  263. The resurrection

  264. of Jesus

  265. Christ

  266. from the

  267. dead

  268. is a

  269. great

  270. joy

  271. to us

  272. to the

  273. extent

  274. that we

  275. understand

  276. how great

  277. our sin

  278. is.

  279. The

  280. resurrection

  281. of Jesus

  282. Christ

  283. from the

  284. dead

  285. is a

  286. great

  287. joy

  288. to us

  289. to the

  290. extent

  291. that we

  292. understand

  293. how much

  294. we've

  295. been

  296. forgiven.

  297. The more

  298. we realize

  299. how much

  300. we need

  301. the gospel

  302. the greater

  303. our celebration

  304. on Easter

  305. will be.

  306. there are

  307. people

  308. who think

  309. overall

  310. they are

  311. pretty

  312. great

  313. and maybe

  314. they just

  315. need

  316. Jesus

  317. to tweak

  318. a few

  319. things

  320. here

  321. and there

  322. and if

  323. that's

  324. you

  325. you will

  326. not have

  327. Mary's

  328. great love

  329. for Jesus

  330. because you're

  331. already

  332. too in

  333. love

  334. with

  335. yourself.

  336. if that's

  337. you

  338. Easter

  339. will

  340. wash

  341. over

  342. you

  343. with

  344. little

  345. effect.

  346. The

  347. one

  348. who has

  349. been

  350. forgiven

  351. much

  352. loves

  353. much.

  354. The

  355. one

  356. who has

  357. been

  358. forgiven

  359. little

  360. loves

  361. little.

  362. There

  363. were lots

  364. of people

  365. that day

  366. in Jerusalem

  367. who were

  368. much better

  369. off than

  370. Mary.

  371. There

  372. were people

  373. that morning

  374. who had

  375. a gourmet

  376. breakfast.

  377. There

  378. were people

  379. in Palestine

  380. with fat

  381. bank

  382. accounts.

  383. There

  384. were people

  385. who were

  386. younger

  387. and stronger

  388. and more

  389. beautiful

  390. than Mary.

  391. None

  392. of them

  393. not one

  394. of them

  395. had as

  396. much joy

  397. as Mary

  398. had.

  399. If you

  400. don't

  401. get

  402. jazzed

  403. up

  404. about

  405. Easter

  406. and the

  407. resurrection

  408. you're

  409. not going

  410. to be

  411. able to

  412. make

  413. yourself

  414. get

  415. excited.

  416. If

  417. the

  418. resurrection

  419. is

  420. boring

  421. to you

  422. it is

  423. because

  424. you do

  425. not know

  426. how

  427. desperate

  428. you are

  429. for God's

  430. mercy

  431. and grace

  432. and forgiveness.

  433. until you

  434. know that

  435. the

  436. resurrection

  437. will wash

  438. over you.

  439. When you

  440. know it

  441. like

  442. Mary

  443. you will

  444. not want

  445. to leave

  446. Jesus

  447. side.

  448. Peter

  449. and John

  450. leave

  451. in verse

  452. 10

  453. Mary

  454. stays

  455. captivated

  456. by his

  457. beauty

  458. worthy

  459. tribute

  460. haste

  461. to bring

  462. let his

  463. peerless

  464. worth

  465. constrain

  466. you

  467. crown

  468. him

  469. now

  470. unrivaled

  471. king.

  472. told you

  473. we were

  474. going to

  475. talk about

  476. two things

  477. this morning

  478. Mary's

  479. love

  480. and

  481. Jesus

  482. love

  483. we've

  484. seen

  485. Mary's

  486. love

  487. in

  488. verses

  489. 1

  490. through

  491. 10

  492. verses

  493. 11

  494. through

  495. 18

  496. we get

  497. to see

  498. the

  499. type

  500. of

  501. love

  502. that

  503. Jesus

  504. has

  505. to

  506. make

  507. a

  508. long

  509. story

  510. short

  511. Mary

  512. doesn't

  513. recognize

  514. Jesus

  515. she's

  516. zeroed

  517. in

  518. and

  519. finding

  520. his

  521. body

  522. that's

  523. verses

  524. 11

  525. through

  526. 13

  527. verses

  528. 14

  529. through

  530. 15

  531. Jesus

  532. does

  533. appear

  534. but

  535. Mary

  536. doesn't

  537. recognize

  538. him

  539. she

  540. thinks

  541. he's

  542. the

  543. gardener

  544. until

  545. what

  546. until

  547. Jesus

  548. says

  549. Mary's

  550. name

  551. one

  552. of the

  553. patterns

  554. that we

  555. see

  556. throughout

  557. the entire

  558. Bible

  559. is that

  560. God

  561. calls

  562. each

  563. of his

  564. people

  565. by name

  566. if you

  567. were with

  568. us

  569. when we

  570. were in

  592. God

  593. did

  631. just

  632. a

  633. few

  634. of

  635. many

  636. examples

  637. Jesus

  638. confronts

  639. Zacchaeus

  640. the tax

  641. collector

  642. who is

  643. a

  644. terrible

  645. man

  646. Zacchaeus

  647. has spent

  648. his life

  649. defrauding

  650. people

  651. and cheating

  652. people

  653. out of

  654. untold

  655. sums

  656. of money

  657. and

  658. Jesus

  659. sees

  660. him

  661. hiding

  662. up

  663. in

  664. the

  665. tree

  666. and

  667. what

  668. does

  669. he

  670. do

  671. he

  672. calls

  673. him

  674. by

  675. name

  676. we

  677. could

  678. go

  679. on

  680. now

  681. Mary

  682. called

  683. by

  684. name

  685. what

  686. does

  687. Jesus

  688. say

  689. in

  690. John

    John 10 chapter mention

  691. chapter

  692. 10

  693. my

  694. sheep

  695. hear

  696. my

  697. voice

  698. and

  699. I

  700. know

  701. them

  702. and

  703. they

  704. follow

  705. me

  706. Jesus

  707. love

  708. is a

  709. specific

  710. individual

  711. love

  712. I had a

  713. seminary

  714. professor

  715. who loved

  716. to come

  717. out to

  718. Colorado

  719. for vacation

  720. and at

  721. one point

  722. he told

  723. us a

  724. story

  725. he was

  726. out

  727. hiking

  728. in the

  729. Rocky

  730. Mountains

  731. and he

  732. just

  733. began

  734. to cry

  735. and he

  736. thought

  737. to himself

  738. the

  739. God

  740. who

  741. made

  742. these

  743. mountains

  744. also

  745. knows

  746. my

  747. name

  748. the

  749. resurrected

  750. Jesus

  751. Christ

  752. who is

  753. sitting

  754. right now

  755. at the

  756. right hand

  757. of God

  758. the

  759. father

  760. who will

  761. return

  762. in glory

  763. to judge

  764. the living

  765. and the

  766. dead

  767. knows

  768. your

  769. name

  770. he knows

  771. your wounds

  772. he knows

  773. your sins

  774. he knows

  775. your failures

  776. he knows

  777. your heartache

  778. he knows

  779. your grief

  780. he knows

  781. your strengths

  782. he knows

  783. your weaknesses

  784. Jesus

  785. knows

  786. all

  787. of it

  788. and he

  789. is still

  790. calling you

  791. by name

  792. have you

  793. answered

  794. will

  795. you

  796. answer

  797. I want

  798. to show

  799. you

  800. one more

  801. thing

  802. this

  803. morning

  804. as we

  805. talk

  806. about

  807. Jesus

  808. love

  809. we don't

  810. just see

  811. Jesus

  812. love

  813. in his

  814. specific

  815. and individual

  816. care

  817. his care

  818. for Mary

  819. and for

  820. us

  821. we also

  822. see

  823. Jesus

  824. love

  825. in his

  826. mercy

  827. and his

  828. grace

  829. Mary

  830. is given

  831. a message

  832. to deliver

  833. in verse

  834. 17

  835. Jesus

  836. tells her

  837. who

  838. that

  839. message

  840. is

  841. for

  842. he

  843. says

  844. go

  845. to my

  846. brothers

  847. and who

  848. are these

  849. brothers

  850. during

  851. Jesus

  852. darkest

  853. hour

  854. Mary

  855. stuck

  856. around

  857. Mary

  858. was

  859. there

  860. at the

  861. crucifixion

  862. if you

  863. were here

  864. on Friday

  865. remember

  866. Mary

  867. is standing

  868. there

  869. with Jesus

  870. mother

  871. as Jesus

  872. is abandoned

  873. by everyone

  874. else

  875. Mary

  876. never

  877. left

  878. what about

  879. the disciples

  880. where were

  881. Peter and

  882. John

  883. all the

  884. disciples

  885. abandoned

  886. Jesus

  887. in the

  888. garden

  889. of

  890. Gethsemane

  891. and since

  892. then

  893. they have

  894. been nowhere

  895. to be

  896. found

  897. they are

  898. not

  899. the loyal

  900. ones

  901. and what

  902. does Jesus

  903. call the

  904. people who

  905. ran away

  906. from him

  907. in his

  908. darkest

  909. hour

  910. he calls

  911. them his

  912. brothers

  913. it's the

  914. good news

  915. of the

  916. gospel

  917. Jesus

  918. because of

  919. his death

  920. on the

  921. cross

  922. his death

  923. that paid

  924. the penalty

  925. for our

  926. sins

  927. offers

  928. for those

  929. who have

  930. betrayed

  931. him

  932. that is

  933. you and

  934. me

  935. to be

  936. adopted

  937. by God

  938. as sons

  939. and daughters

  940. Jesus

  941. says

  942. we can

  943. be his

  944. friends

  945. and if

  946. you think

  947. that friend

  948. is too

  949. chummy a

  950. word for

  951. God

  952. I will

  953. let you

  954. hear it

  955. not from

  956. me

  957. but from

  958. Jesus

  959. John

    John 15 chapter mention

  960. chapter 15

  961. he says

  962. this

  963. no longer

  964. do I

  965. call you

  966. servants

  967. for the

  968. servant

  969. does not

  970. know what

  971. his master

  972. is doing

  973. but I

  974. have called

  975. you friends

  976. for all

  977. that I

  978. have heard

  979. from my

  980. father

  981. I have

  982. made

  983. known

  984. to you

  985. you can

  986. be Jesus

  987. friend

  988. you can

  989. be his

  990. brother

  991. no matter

  992. how much

  993. you betrayed

  994. him

  995. you can

  996. be a

  997. sibling

  998. of

  999. Jesus

  1000. no matter

  1001. what you've

  1002. done

  1003. because

  1004. of his

  1005. death

  1006. and his

  1007. resurrection

  1008. if you

  1009. don't know

  1010. what that

  1011. means

  1012. and you

  1013. want to

  1014. dig deeper

  1015. into that

  1016. you can

  1017. look at

  1018. page 17

  1019. and 18

  1020. of your

  1021. worship guide

  1022. which spells

  1023. out what

  1024. it means

  1025. to repent

  1026. of your

  1027. sins

  1028. and to

  1029. follow

  1030. Jesus

  1031. in faith

  1032. that

  1033. friendship

  1034. that friendship

  1035. with God

  1036. is made

  1037. possible by

  1038. Jesus

  1039. death

  1040. and his

  1041. resurrection

  1042. defeating

  1043. sin

  1044. and death

  1045. forever

  1046. and earlier

  1047. in the

  1048. gospel

  1049. also in

  1050. John

  1051. Jesus

  1052. explains

  1053. this

  1054. John

  1055. 15

  1056. greater

  1057. love

  1058. has no

  1059. one

  1060. than

  1061. this

  1062. that

  1063. someone

  1064. laid

  1065. down

  1066. his

  1067. life

  1068. for

  1069. his

  1070. friends

  1071. do

  1072. you

  1073. know

  1074. your

  1075. need

  1076. will

  1077. you

  1078. be

  1079. a

  1080. friend

  1081. of

  1082. Jesus

  1083. he

  1084. knows

  1085. your

  1086. name

  1087. and

  1088. he's

  1089. calling

  1090. let's

  1091. pray

  1092. our

  1093. father

  1094. in

  1095. heaven

  1096. we do

  1097. thank you

  1098. and praise

  1099. you

  1100. for the

  1101. great

  1102. grace

  1103. and mercy

  1104. that you

  1105. offer

  1106. to us

  1107. in

  1108. Jesus

  1109. Christ

  1110. we

  1111. ask

  1112. that

  1113. you

  1114. would

  1115. be

  1116. at

  1117. work

  1118. in

  1119. our

  1120. hearts

  1121. showing

  1122. us

  1123. how

  1124. desperate

  1125. our

  1126. need

  1127. is

  1128. for

  1129. you

  1130. that

  1131. that

  1132. path

  1133. of

  1134. repentance

  1135. would

  1136. lead

  1137. us

  1138. to

  1139. great

  1140. joy

  1141. joy

  1142. greater

  1143. than

  1144. what

  1145. we've

  1146. ever

  1147. known

  1148. before

  1149. because

  1150. we

  1151. are

  1152. resting

  1153. you

  1154. in the

  1155. mercy

  1156. and

  1157. grace

  1158. in

  1159. our

  1160. friend

  1161. and

  1162. our

  1163. savior

  1164. Jesus

  1165. Christ

  1166. and

  1167. we

  1168. ask

  1169. all

  1170. of

  1171. these

  1172. things

  1173. in

  1174. his

  1175. name

  1176. amen

  1177. I

  1178. invite

  1179. you

  1180. to

  1181. stand
