  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. A special welcome if you're new, visiting. We're glad that you're here. This morning we're continuing our series in the book of Romans.

  3. The book of Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD. It's called Romans because it is written to the churches in the city of Rome and it is about the gospel.

  4. It's about the good news of Jesus' life and death and resurrection.

  5. We are getting to the end of Romans chapter 8. If you read the congregational letter that came out in February, you know that after we finish chapter 8, we are headed back to the book of Genesis for the story of Isaac.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  6. It shows up in Genesis chapters 25 through 37 and then the plan, Lord willing, is when we finish with Isaac, we'll return again to Romans and we'll pick back up with chapter 9.

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  7. So we're finishing chapter 8, which is about life in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, and we're continuing a problem that was introduced all the way back in verse 17.

  8. So you remember verses 12 through 17 of chapter 8, Paul tells us, look, good news, you've been adopted by God, you're God's children.

  9. And then he tells us this in verse 17,

  10. And if children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

  11. And so there's the problem. Adoption ultimately results in glory, but we have to pass through suffering first.

  12. And so that raised this question that we've been kind of chipping away at for a number of weeks, which is, okay, glory, that's great that that's coming.

  13. How do we make it through the suffering in the meantime?

  14. Verses 18 through 25 gave us our first answer.

  15. We make it through the suffering by meditating on understanding, realizing how great heaven is.

  16. So the hope of future glory helps us make it through present suffering.

  17. We spent three weeks working through that first answer.

  18. Now the second answer is coming in verse 26.

  19. We make it through present suffering because of the work of the Holy Spirit on our behalf in prayer.

  20. We make it through present suffering because of the work of the Holy Spirit on our behalf in prayer.

  21. So with that, I invite you to turn with me to Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  22. You can find it many places.

  23. One of them is page 7 of your worship guide.

  24. And as you turn there, remember that this is God's word.

  25. Psalm 19 tells us that God's word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold.

  26. And it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  27. So that's why we read now Romans chapter 8, starting at verse 26.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  28. Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

  29. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

  30. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit,

  31. because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

  32. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  33. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you again this morning for your word, and we ask for your help.

  34. That you would send your Holy Spirit to unstop our ears, to open up our eyes,

  35. to clear our minds and soften our hearts, that we would be able to see and hear and understand and believe

  36. everything that you've given us in your word.

  37. And most of all, you'd show us Jesus Christ, that we'd see him clearly.

  38. You'd grow our love and our affection for Christ.

  39. You'd increase our reverence and our awe for him.

  40. And you'd lead us in obedience to him.

  41. And we ask all of these things in his mighty name.

  42. Amen.

  43. One of the great principles of Scripture that I mention to you all from time to time

  44. is that God never commands us to do something that he does not enable and empower.

  45. And he does that in a wide variety of ways.

  46. God has a vast repertoire of things he gives us to help us.

  47. The emphasis in chapter 8 of Romans is God's gift of the Holy Spirit,

  48. the help that is given to us by the Spirit.

  49. That's why verse 26 starts with the verse, likewise.

  50. He's saying, look, here's the next item in this list of supports that I'm giving you.

  51. God enables and empowers all your obedience.

  52. Here's how he does it.

  53. Here is another way.

  54. In your tool belt, your toolbox of God's power,

  55. here's one more item.

  56. Here's another help for you as you face the challenges of life.

  57. Here's another way that I enable and empower you.

  58. It's not just verses 18 through 25.

  59. It's not just a hope of future glory, but also, again, verse 26,

  60. the Spirit helps us in our weakness,

  61. for we do not know what to pray for as we ought.

  62. Now, as we think about this word weakness,

  63. there's all sorts of weaknesses that we experience because we're human.

  64. The challenges that we face in the world are not just because of our struggle against sin.

  65. They're also because of our own frailty.

  66. There is this inability, this weakness,

  67. that shows up in our lives,

  68. even if it's not something sinful,

  69. because it's part of being human.

  70. There are significant limitations that we knock up against as finite people.

  71. And one way, Paul tells us,

  72. that inability, that weakness, that frailty pops up in our lives

  73. is when we turn to pray.

  74. And we turn to pray,

  75. and our frailty means often we have no idea what to pray for.

  76. We know we're supposed to talk to God,

  77. but what is it we're actually supposed to say?

  78. We hit up against our own significant human limitations.

  79. So someone comes up to you,

  80. they say,

  81. hey, I really need your prayers,

  82. I want you to pray for me,

  83. and you say, yes, absolutely,

  84. and then you go to pray for them,

  85. and you realize,

  86. what am I praying to God for?

  87. I know what the problem is.

  88. I have no idea what the solution is.

  89. I'm not sure what it is exactly I'm supposed to be asking for.

  90. There are situations that are truly baffling to us.

  91. So you have a friend,

  92. and there's a great tragedy, right?

  93. They're facing a terminal illness.

  94. You know that within a short amount of time,

  95. this person will die.

  96. So it doesn't make sense for you to pray for healing.

  97. Death comes for all of us.

  98. It's inevitable.

  99. Maybe you pray for comfort or relief from pain.

  100. Maybe you ask that God would fix their eyes on heaven.

  101. What else?

  102. What else can you pray that will help?

  103. How is God using this within his greater purposes for the world?

  104. Well, you don't know.

  105. You don't know because of your weakness.

  106. Maybe someone asks you,

  107. hey, I really need you to pray that my kid will get into Harvard.

  108. And you think, well, is that a good prayer?

  109. Will that take them closer to Christ,

  110. or will it draw them farther away?

  111. Will that make them proud or arrogant,

  112. or will they serve as a light for the gospel there?

  113. Well, for some people, maybe that's a good thing for them.

  114. Others, it's a bad thing.

  115. And you don't know God's will.

  116. You don't know if it's good or bad in this situation.

  117. So how should you pray?

  118. Should you do what they've asked?

  119. Should you pray that God doesn't get them into Harvard?

  120. You don't know.

  121. You have great weakness.

  122. And then, of course, there are situations that are overwhelming.

  123. And this really gets at the groaning that's spoken of in this passage

  124. and the passages that preceded it.

  125. There are tragedies in this life,

  126. and when they happen,

  127. there are times where grief and sorrow and confusion is so overwhelming,

  128. perhaps you feel like you can't even breathe.

  129. Your spouse tells you that they want out of the marriage.

  130. Your doctor tells you that you have cancer.

  131. Your child has a severe and crippling disability.

  132. You find out that your best friend has left the Lord.

  133. Wars and rumors of wars break out,

  134. whether in the Middle East or somewhere else.

  135. And you want to cry out to God.

  136. You just don't know what to say.

  137. And you don't know what to say because of your weakness.

  138. It's in that confusion that the Holy Spirit helps.

  139. Verse 26.

  140. The Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

  141. In all of those situations,

  142. the Holy Spirit takes your desire,

  143. he takes your groanings,

  144. he takes your confusion and frustration,

  145. and he prays to God

  146. for exactly what will be for your good and God's glory.

  147. The Holy Spirit knows the groanings of your heart.

  148. Remember the Holy Spirit dwells within you.

  149. Romans chapter 8 verse 9.

    Romans 8:9

  150. If you're a Christian,

  151. he understands your confusion and frustration.

  152. He knows your inability and your weakness,

  153. and so he steps in.

  154. The Spirit prays to God

  155. for something that will bring your good and his glory.

  156. Now maybe you're not praying for yourself.

  157. Maybe you're praying for another Christian.

  158. Maybe you're praying for the parent

  159. whose kid needs to get into Harvard.

  160. The Spirit will pray for something

  161. that is for their good and his glory.

  162. You don't know what to pray for?

  163. That's okay.

  164. Because the Holy Spirit does.

  165. You have a problem.

  166. We have a problem.

  167. Because of our weakness.

  168. And the Holy Spirit helps.

  169. The point is this.

  170. You pray,

  171. and you groan,

  172. in your confusion.

  173. The Holy Spirit

  174. prays and groans with you,

  175. but not in confusion,

  176. with clarity.

  177. The Holy Spirit

  178. knows exactly what to pray for,

  179. and he does.

  180. The Greek word for help here,

  181. speaking of the Spirit,

  182. in verse 26,

  183. means to come alongside someone

  184. or to share the load.

  185. So,

  186. some boxes,

  187. maybe you've had a box

  188. arrive at your house,

  189. has this sticker on it,

  190. and what does the sticker say?

  191. To man lift.

  192. It shows these little stick figures,

  193. right?

  194. One stick figure on one side of the box,

  195. one stick figure on the other.

  196. Paul's telling us

  197. the life of prayer

  198. is like that.

  199. There are times

  200. when it is too heavy

  201. for you to carry alone.

  202. Good news.

  203. The Holy Spirit

  204. lifts as well.

  205. Pastor Derek Thomas

  206. illustrates this

  207. with the story

  208. of moving a piano,

  209. which at one point

  210. he had to bring into his house,

  211. and so he had many men

  212. helping him lift this piano,

  213. and he said this,

  214. I had my hands firmly

  215. on a section

  216. of the piano,

  217. but can I honestly say

  218. that I lifted

  219. that piano?

  220. The truth is,

  221. the young men

  222. were doing most

  223. of the lifting,

  224. even though I groaned

  225. along with them,

  226. as the piano seemed

  227. to grow heavier

  228. with each step.

  229. Christian,

  230. so it is in prayer.

  231. Yes,

  232. your hands

  233. are on the piano.

  234. Yes,

  235. you are groaning.

  236. The Holy Spirit

  237. is doing

  238. the real work.

  239. The Holy Spirit

  240. is doing

  241. the heavy lifting.

  242. The point is this.

  243. As a Christian,

  244. as you walk

  245. in this life

  246. and you face

  247. your own weakness

  248. and inability

  249. and frustration

  250. and confusion

  251. in prayer

  252. and life,

  253. you are not alone.

  254. The Holy Spirit

  255. is there

  256. with you.

  257. Another reason

  258. why Jesus' words

  259. are true,

  260. it's better

  261. that he left us

  262. so that he could

  263. send the Spirit.

  264. Another benefit

  265. that comes

  266. from what we saw

  267. in Romans 8,

    Romans 8:9

  268. verse 9,

  269. that there's this

  270. indwelling

  271. of the Spirit

  272. for every Christian.

  273. If you are a Christian,

  274. you have the Spirit

  275. full stop.

  276. Page 7

  277. of your worship guide,

  278. the indwelling

  279. of the Holy Spirit

  280. refers to

  281. his special presence

  282. in every believer

  283. in Christ.

  284. If you are a Christian,

  285. the Holy Spirit

  286. lives in you

  287. and what does it do?

  288. Many things

  289. including

  290. groaning

  291. with you

  292. in prayer.

  293. Verse 27

  294. goes on

  295. to tell us

  296. that these prayers

  297. of the Spirit

  298. are 100%

  299. effective.

  300. Verse 27,

  301. and he who searches

  302. hearts

  303. knows what is

  304. the mind

  305. of the Spirit.

  306. That first phrase,

  307. he who searches hearts,

  308. is a reference

  309. there to God the Father.

  310. Knows what is

  311. the mind

  312. of the Spirit,

  313. so God the Father

  314. knows the desire

  315. of the Holy Spirit

  316. and why does

  317. God the Father

  318. know that desire?

  319. Well,

  320. 27 goes on,

  321. because the Spirit

  322. intercedes

  323. for the saints

  324. according to

  325. the will

  326. of God.

  327. So the Spirit's

  328. intercession

  329. is effective

  330. because both

  331. God the Father

  332. and God the Holy Spirit

  333. are members

  334. of the Trinity.

  335. They're part

  336. of the Godhead.

  337. Remember,

  338. as Christians,

  339. we believe

  340. in the triune God.

  341. That is,

  342. there is one God

  343. in three persons.

  344. And so,

  345. they are always

  346. in perfect

  347. agreement.

  348. The will

  349. of the Father

  350. and the will

  351. of the Spirit

  352. are always

  353. the same.

  354. And so,

  355. the prayers

  356. of the Spirit,

  357. the answer

  358. is always

  359. yes.

  360. Remember,

  361. the Spirit

  362. takes your groanings

  363. and longings

  364. and confusion

  365. and frustration

  366. and turns them

  367. into a clear prayer

  368. for your good

  369. and God's glory.

  370. Pastor Tim Keller

  371. puts it this way,

  372. God will either

  373. give us

  374. what we ask for

  375. in prayer

  376. or give us

  377. what we would

  378. have asked for

  379. if we knew

  380. everything

  381. He knows.

  382. God will either

  383. give us

  384. what we ask

  385. for in prayer

  386. or

  387. give us

  388. what we would

  389. have asked for

  390. if we knew

  391. everything

  392. He knows.

  393. Now,

  394. there is one

  395. who asks

  396. for what we

  397. would have asked

  398. for if we knew

  399. what God knew,

  400. the Holy Spirit.

  401. and so those

  402. prayers

  403. are already

  404. being

  405. offered.

  406. Great preacher

  407. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  408. compares the work

  409. of the Holy Spirit

  410. here to the work

  411. of a good

  412. lawyer.

  413. There are

  414. certain situations,

  415. if you've lived

  416. life long enough,

  417. you know this,

  418. unless you have

  419. a lawyer,

  420. you might

  421. as well

  422. give up.

  423. Now,

  424. when our

  425. congregant

  426. Shabnam

  427. was taken

  428. by ICE

  429. last year,

  430. the task

  431. number one,

  432. number one,

  433. find a lawyer.

  434. Find a lawyer

  435. as fast

  436. as

  437. possible.

  438. They tell you,

  439. you know,

  440. the conventional

  441. wisdom is

  442. if you get a DUI

  443. and it's your

  444. first DUI,

  445. what's the

  446. real punishment?

  447. The real

  448. punishment

  449. is the

  450. $10,000

  451. you have to

  452. shell out

  453. for a lawyer.

  454. And they've

  455. been saying

  456. that for years,

  457. so I bet

  458. it's $15,000

  459. or $20,000

  460. now.

  461. Why is it

  462. people start

  463. legal defense

  464. funds?

  465. It's for that

  466. reason.

  467. When we were

  468. calling around

  469. for Shabnam,

  470. they were

  471. saying,

  472. hey,

  473. the going

  474. price,

  475. $20,000.

  476. You want

  477. someone to

  478. help you

  479. get out

  480. of ICE

  481. detention?

  482. That is

  483. your entry

  484. fee.

  485. Why?

  486. Because a

  487. good lawyer

  488. represents

  489. you.

  490. A good

  491. lawyer knows

  492. the right

  493. thing to

  494. say and

  495. when to

  496. say it.

  497. The right

  498. lawyer understands

  499. the system.

  500. He's been

  501. there before.

  502. He knows

  503. how this

  504. works.

  505. He anticipates

  506. the questions

  507. from the

  508. judge.

  509. The results

  510. with the

  511. right lawyer

  512. are vastly

  513. different.

  514. Of course,

  515. you hear in

  516. the news,

  517. right,

  518. there's

  519. celebrity

  520. lawyers.

  521. Hey,

  522. this famous

  523. person hired

  524. this lawyer,

  525. you know,

  526. charges $10,000

  527. an hour,

  528. and they've

  529. helped all

  530. these other

  531. famous people

  532. get out.

  533. And why

  534. are they

  535. worth that

  536. much money?

  537. Because they

  538. know how

  539. to win.

  540. they know

  541. how to

  542. get it

  543. done.

  544. Christian,

  545. the Holy

  546. Spirit

  547. always

  548. wins

  549. his

  550. case.

  551. And

  552. he

  553. is

  554. your

  555. lawyer.

  556. Wow.

  557. That's

  558. what Paul's

  559. saying.

  560. you have

  561. the best

  562. legal defense

  563. possible

  564. before God

  565. the Father.

  566. You feel

  567. like this

  568. situation in

  569. your life

  570. is overwhelming

  571. and beyond

  572. your ability

  573. to comprehend

  574. and process

  575. and understand,

  576. and you do

  577. not know

  578. the right

  579. words to

  580. say.

  581. No problem.

  582. You have

  583. a lawyer

  584. who does

  585. know

  586. exactly

  587. what

  588. to say.

  589. I have

  590. a friend

  591. here in

  592. town

  593. who at

  594. one point

  595. was taken

  596. advantage of,

  597. defrauded,

  598. we might say

  599. abused,

  600. by a local

  601. businessman.

  602. Actually,

  603. a number

  604. of people

  605. lost money

  606. investing

  607. with this

  608. man.

  609. People in

  610. our circles,

  611. Presbyterian

  612. people who

  613. trusted him

  614. and he

  615. walked away

  616. with tens

  617. of thousands

  618. of dollars.

  619. And I

  620. talked to

  621. this individual

  622. at one

  623. point about

  624. legal

  625. representation

  626. because he

  627. didn't have

  628. any.

  629. And he

  630. was trying

  631. to basically

  632. negotiate this

  633. situation on

  634. his own.

  635. And he

  636. said this

  637. to me,

  638. Matthew,

  639. we ain't

  640. got lawyer

  641. money.

  642. This is a

  643. way of saying,

  644. yeah,

  645. we've been

  646. defrauded,

  647. we've been

  648. abused,

  649. we've taken

  650. advantage of,

  651. but I don't

  652. have the

  653. resources.

  654. I don't

  655. have ten,

  656. twenty,

  657. thirty thousand

  658. dollars to

  659. throw at this

  660. case.

  661. So we're

  662. going to have

  663. to figure it

  664. out on our

  665. own.

  666. If you

  667. are in

  668. Christ,

  669. you have

  670. lawyer money.

  671. You have

  672. the best

  673. lawyer that

  674. money can

  675. buy.

  676. In fact,

  677. you have a

  678. lawyer money

  679. can't buy.

  680. You have a

  681. lawyer who

  682. can only be

  683. purchased in

  684. one way.

  685. and that

  686. is the

  687. blood of

  688. Jesus

  689. Christ.

  690. Why is

  691. the Spirit

  692. with you?

  693. Because

  694. Jesus rose

  695. from the

  696. dead on

  697. the third

  698. day,

  699. ascended to

  700. the right

  701. hand of

  702. God the

  703. Father,

  704. and sends

  705. the Spirit

  706. to you.

  707. you.

  708. Why would

  709. you fear?

  710. You have

  711. someone better

  712. than Frank

  713. Azar.

  714. The

  715. strong man,

  716. strong arm.

  717. Now,

  718. Martin

  719. Lloyd-Jones

  720. uses that

  721. to talk

  722. about the

  723. Holy Spirit.

  724. Funny

  725. enough,

  726. the Puritan,

  727. Richard

  728. Sibbes,

  729. who lived

  730. a long

  731. time before

  732. Martin

  733. Lloyd-Jones,

  734. uses almost

  735. the same

  736. exact

  737. illustration,

  738. but not

  739. of the

  740. Holy Spirit.

  741. No,

  742. Sibbes

  743. uses it

  744. of Christ.

  745. The

  746. Holy Spirit

  747. is not

  748. the only

  749. lawyer you

  750. have on

  751. your side.

  752. You also

  753. have Christ,

  754. and by the

  755. way,

  756. we're going

  757. to see

  758. this in

  759. a couple

  760. weeks in

  761. Romans,

  762. representing

  763. you before

  764. the Father.

  765. Because if

  766. you're in

  767. Jesus,

  768. you have

  769. both.

  770. You ain't

  771. got just

  772. one lawyer.

  773. You have

  774. two

  775. lawyers.

  776. Theologians

  777. would say

  778. you have

  779. Jesus

  780. standing

  781. before the

  782. throne of

  783. God

  784. interceding

  785. for you,

  786. and you

  787. have the

  788. Spirit

  789. in your

  790. heart

  791. crying

  792. out

  793. for you,

  794. pleading

  795. your

  796. case

  797. in

  798. heaven.

  799. How

  800. much

  801. better

  802. could it

  803. get?

  804. All

  805. because

  806. of

  807. Jesus'

  808. life

  809. and

  810. death

  811. and

  812. resurrection.

  813. And so

  814. Arkant

  815. Hughes

  816. sums it

  817. up in

  818. this way.

  819. It's

  820. page

  821. eight

  822. of

  823. your

  824. worship

  825. guide.

  826. How

  827. marvelous

  828. this

  829. all

  830. is.

  831. We

  832. have

  833. two

  834. intercessors,

  835. one

  836. in

  837. heaven,

  838. our

  839. Lord

  840. Jesus

  841. who

  842. intercedes

  843. for

  844. our

  845. sins

  846. and

  847. one

  848. in

  849. our

  850. hearts,

  851. the

  852. Holy

  853. Spirit

  854. himself.

  855. How

  856. greatly

  857. we

  858. are

  859. loved.

  860. Christian,

  861. how

  862. greatly

  863. you

  864. are

  865. loved

  866. by

  867. God.

  868. Let's

  869. pray.

  870. Our

  871. Father in

  872. heaven,

  873. we do

  874. praise you

  875. and thank

  876. you that

  877. you haven't

  878. left us

  879. alone in

  880. our

  881. confusion

  882. and our

  883. weakness,

  884. that our

  885. future doesn't

  886. rely on the

  887. greatness of

  888. our prayers,

  889. but instead

  890. you've given

  891. us the

  892. Holy Spirit

  893. to help

  894. us,

  895. to support

  896. us,

  897. to intercede

  898. for us.

  899. We ask

  900. that you'd

  901. remind us

  902. of that.

  903. It would

  904. give us

  905. great courage

  906. and joy

  907. to continue

  908. following you

  909. in this

  910. life to

  911. the glory

  912. that is

  913. to come.

  914. And we

  915. ask all

  916. of these

  917. things in

  918. the mighty

  919. name of

  920. Jesus

  921. Christ.

  922. Amen.

  923. I invite

  924. you to

  925. stand for

  926. our

  927. communion

  928. hymn.
