  1. Our Father in heaven, we do praise you and thank you again for gathering us together this morning.

  2. And we thank you that you speak to us day by day and week by week in your word.

  3. We confess that we need your help, that we are finite and faltering people.

  4. We're plagued by our own sin, our own imperfections, and we need your help.

  5. We ask that you'd send your Holy Spirit in a special way.

  6. That you'd be at work speaking clearly to us in your word.

  7. You'd help us to understand it, to believe it.

  8. Most of all, that you'd set our eyes on Jesus Christ.

  9. You'd grow our love and our affection and our obedience to him.

  10. And we ask all of these things in his mighty name. Amen.

  11. I heard a story years ago about a seminary professor who told his students,

  12. when you become a pastor, when you graduate, and you're in a church,

  13. and you're preaching your sermon on a Sunday morning,

  14. and you look out to the back of the church, I want you to imagine that I am standing there.

  15. And as you get near the end of your sermon, my arms are crossed,

  16. and you hear me say,

  17. so what?

  18. So what?

  19. Why does any of this matter?

  20. You've said all these things, pastor, and why should we care?

  21. Paul, the apostle, the preacher, the pastor,

  22. at the very end of chapter 8 is asking that exact thing.

  23. So what?

  24. That's the meaning of the first half of verse 31.

  25. What then shall we say to these things?

  26. What are we supposed to do?

  27. What's our conclusion?

  28. What is the point of all of this?

  29. What's the takeaway?

  30. What's the bottom line of chapter 8?

  31. What's the bottom line of verse 1,

  32. that there's no condemnation for those who are in Jesus Christ?

  33. What are we supposed to make of verse 6,

  34. that if we set our minds on the things of the Spirit,

  35. we'll have life and peace?

  36. What are we supposed to do with verses 9 through 11,

  37. that every Christian has the Holy Spirit

  38. that gives new heart and new power?

  39. So what about verse 23?

  40. That you're going to receive a new body full of disease and pain.

  41. Or verse 28 from last week,

  42. that God works everything for good in the lives of his people.

  43. How do we put all of those things together?

  44. How do we summarize them?

  45. How do we keep them from being all these different facts

  46. that just float around in our mind?

  47. How do we respond to the great salvation

  48. that we have in Jesus Christ?

  49. Another way to put it is this.

  50. Why does any of this matter

  51. on Tuesday morning at King Soopers?

  52. So what?

  53. Thankfully, Paul doesn't leave us hanging.

  54. He tells us right away.

  55. That's the second half of verse 31.

  56. If God is for us,

  57. who can be against us?

  58. That's it.

  59. It's one sentence.

  60. It's a question,

  61. although it's not really a question, right?

  62. It's a rhetorical question.

  63. Paul's actually making a point.

  64. He's not looking for us to answer.

  65. And the point is this.

  66. No matter what happens in this life,

  67. if God is for us,

  68. and by the way, he is,

  69. in the end,

  70. we can't not win.

  71. No matter what we face or endure or suffer in this life,

  72. if God is for us,

  73. and by the way, he is,

  74. we know that the end of our story

  75. is glory with him.

  76. No matter what,

  77. no matter what,

  78. you can't not win.

  79. That will be the last word on your life.

  80. Now, Paul is not saying,

  81. when he says,

  82. who can be against us,

  83. he's not saying,

  84. we'll never have opposition.

  85. Of course, there's all sorts of things

  86. that can come against us.

  87. What he is saying is,

  88. none of those things will be successful.

  89. So when he says,

  90. who can be against us,

  91. he's really saying,

  92. who can successfully oppose you?

  93. Who can conquer you?

  94. Is there any force that can come up against you?

  95. No.

  96. Any force that opposes you is laughable.

  97. God is so big,

  98. he's so great,

  99. that there is no threat

  100. that can enter into your life

  101. that is actually a credible threat.

  102. No, when compared to God and his power,

  103. it fades away.

  104. And it's not just that God is so big,

  105. although he is,

  106. but Paul's point here is that

  107. this big God is for us.

  108. That's the main point, by the way, of chapter eight.

  109. Paul's telling us the summary,

  110. summing it all up in one sentence.

  111. And as we've looked through chapter eight,

  112. the point is not that God is so great,

  113. although yes, we know that he is.

  114. The point is that God is for his people.

  115. You already saw one way last week,

  116. verse 28.

  117. He's for us,

  118. and so he's weaving together

  119. all the events of our lives

  120. so that no matter what happens,

  121. ultimately it's for our good.

  122. Not just 28, though.

  123. It's what the whole chapter's about.

  124. Verses 26 and 27.

  125. God is for us because he's for us.

  126. The Holy Spirit is crying out.

  127. He's praying on our behalf

  128. with groans too deep for words.

  129. Same reason we have the promise of verse 18.

  130. We have a glorious future

  131. that allows us to persevere

  132. with everything that happens in the present.

  133. Why do we have that glorious future?

  134. Why does God show it to us,

  135. remind us of it?

  136. Because he is for us.

  137. So the point is this.

  138. Whatever you face in this life,

  139. the world, the flesh, the devil,

  140. sickness, disease, slander, pain,

  141. poverty, destruction, or war,

  142. none of those things get the last word.

  143. If God is for us,

  144. who can be against us?

  145. It doesn't mean you won't suffer in this life.

  146. It does mean whatever you face

  147. fully, finally, ultimately,

  148. will not, cannot win

  149. if you are in Christ.

  150. God is for us.

  151. Who can be against us?

  152. This week and the next two weeks,

  153. we're going to finish chapter 8

  154. and we are going to see

  155. three different ways

  156. over these three weeks

  157. that God is for us.

  158. three reasons

  159. that we can't not win

  160. in the end.

  161. This week, we're just going to look

  162. at the first of those three reasons,

  163. which is the second half

  164. of verse 32.

  165. He who did not spare his own son,

  166. but gave him up for us all,

  167. how will he not also with him

  168. graciously give us all things?

  169. Now, one pastor illustrates

  170. verse 32 this way,

  171. and I've told you guys this

  172. a couple times.

  173. Imagine that there's a young man,

  174. he's madly in love

  175. with a young woman,

  176. he decides it's time for them

  177. to move forward,

  178. and so he goes to the jewelry store

  179. and he buys her the best diamond

  180. he can afford.

  181. And then he gives it to her.

  182. She says yes.

  183. If he gives her that ring,

  184. will he not also give her

  185. the box it came in?

  186. If he gave her something so great,

  187. why would he hesitate

  188. to give her something small?

  189. That's what Paul's saying here.

  190. God gave you his only son.

  191. Is there anything

  192. he would hold back from you?

  193. Another pastor illustrates

  194. it a different way.

  195. He gives us a scenario.

  196. He says,

  197. imagine you win

  198. a free Rolls Royce.

  199. Kids,

  200. a Rolls Royce

  201. is a very expensive car, okay?

  202. Imagine you win

  203. a free Rolls Royce,

  204. and you go to pick it up,

  205. and you're so excited,

  206. you get the car,

  207. but they refuse

  208. to give you the key.

  209. They wouldn't do that, right?

  210. That's absurd.

  211. Of course,

  212. that would never happen.

  213. You would never gift someone

  214. a car and say,

  215. you know what?

  216. We're so glad

  217. you can have the car.

  218. We're going to keep the key.

  219. No, the car includes

  220. the key.

  221. In the same way,

  222. it would never happen

  223. that God would give you

  224. his beloved son

  225. and then hold back

  226. anything else

  227. that you need

  228. to follow after him.

  229. God isn't trying

  230. to cut a deal.

  231. God is not looking

  232. to save 10%

  233. on your salvation

  234. by buying in bulk.

  235. God is not going

  236. to Costco

  237. to get your redemption.

  238. Okay,

  239. he's not trying

  240. to cut corners.

  241. He did not give you

  242. his son

  243. so that he could

  244. then leave you

  245. to figure out

  246. the rest

  247. on your own.

  248. No,

  249. if he gave you

  250. his son,

  251. he will give you

  252. all things.

  253. now in context,

  254. I have to clarify

  255. what all things

  256. means.

  257. God is not promising

  258. to give you

  259. a Rolls Royce.

  260. Paul is talking

  261. here,

  262. remember what we

  263. just saw last week,

  264. he's talking about

  265. your salvation,

  266. that what God

  267. has determined

  268. to start,

  269. he will absolutely

  270. finish.

  271. So God is going

  272. to give you

  273. all things

  274. necessary

  275. for your life

  276. as a Christian.

  277. God is going

  278. to give you

  279. everything you need

  280. to make it

  281. to the end.

  282. He's not going

  283. to hold back

  284. what you require

  285. to make it

  286. to glory.

  287. The Apostle Peter

  288. in 2 Peter chapter 1

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  289. says it a different way

  290. which helps us

  291. understand what Paul

  292. means by all things.

  293. He says,

  294. his divine power

  295. has granted

  296. to us all things

  297. that pertain

  298. to life

  299. and godliness.

  300. Do you need

  301. something

  302. for life

  303. and godliness?

  304. God has promised

  305. to give that

  306. to you.

  307. Do you need

  308. something

  309. to make it

  310. to the end

  311. still trusting

  312. Jesus and following

  313. him?

  314. God has promised

  315. to give

  316. that

  317. to you.

  318. whatever you need.

  319. If he gives her

  320. the box

  321. or the ring

  322. will he not

  323. also give her

  324. the box?

  325. If you get

  326. given a Rolls Royce

  327. of course

  328. you're going

  329. to receive

  330. the key.

  331. He who did not

  332. spare his own son

  333. but gave him

  334. up for us all

  335. how will he not

  336. also with him

  337. graciously

  338. give us

  339. all things.

  340. Years ago

  341. I read

  342. about

  343. this concept

  344. from the history

  345. of the church

  346. called

  347. arguing

  348. in prayer

  349. which is that

  350. when we pray

  351. to God

  352. there's a couple

  353. things that we do.

  354. We remind him

  355. of his promises

  356. the things that he said

  357. he's going to do

  358. and we remind him

  359. of what he says

  360. that he loves.

  361. And so when we bring

  362. our prayers before

  363. and we filter them

  364. through that

  365. and we say

  366. okay am I praying

  367. for something

  368. that God has said

  369. he's going to do

  370. for me?

  371. Am I praying

  372. for something

  373. that God says

  374. that he desires

  375. he delights in?

  376. And then we tell him

  377. hey I'm praying

  378. for this

  379. I'm not praying

  380. that you know

  381. I would just have

  382. a comfortable life

  383. no I'm aligning

  384. myself with the

  385. Lord's prayer

  386. that your kingdom

  387. would come on earth

  388. as it is in heaven.

  389. And you've said

  390. you love this

  391. so do it.

  392. And so after I read

  393. this you know

  394. every time

  395. that I preach now

  396. throughout a number

  397. of years

  398. I ask that God

  399. would send his spirit

  400. to be with us

  401. as we're here together

  402. on Sunday morning

  403. in a special way.

  404. I ask him

  405. that he'd be at work

  406. to show us Christ

  407. that God would

  408. make him more beautiful

  409. than he was before.

  410. I pray that God

  411. would be at work

  412. changing our hearts

  413. and our minds

  414. and our lives

  415. that he would honor

  416. his promise

  417. in Isaiah 55

  418. that his word

  419. will not return

  420. to his void.

  421. And then I tell him

  422. I remind him

  423. that he's made a promise

  424. in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  425. He gave us his son.

  426. Will he not also

  427. give us all things?

  428. God you promised this.

  429. You said it goes along

  430. with our salvation.

  431. We need it.

  432. So do it.

  433. We need it for life

  434. and godliness.

  435. You can do the same thing.

  436. Lord we need wisdom.

  437. We're trying to raise

  438. our kids to love

  439. and follow you

  440. and you said

  441. you would give us

  442. all things.

  443. Honor the promise.

  444. Do what you said

  445. you would do.

  446. We're not asking

  447. for a sports car.

  448. We're not asking

  449. for a fancy vacation.

  450. We're asking for life

  451. and godliness.

  452. Lord we need your help.

  453. We have this impasse.

  454. We're both Christians

  455. and we cannot figure out

  456. how to get along.

  457. We need the wisdom

  458. and the humility

  459. and the repentance

  460. that we don't have

  461. within ourselves.

  462. And you said

  463. if you gave us your son

  464. you would give us

  465. all things.

  466. Honor the promise.

  467. We need it

  468. for life

  469. and godliness.

  470. Lord we want to grow.

  471. We need more

  472. of the fruit of the spirit.

  473. We need more

  474. love, joy, peace,

  475. patience, kindness,

  476. goodness, faithfulness,

  477. gentleness,

  478. and self-control.

  479. And you know what?

  480. All of those things

  481. pertain to life

  482. and godliness.

  483. And you made a promise.

  484. You said

  485. that because you gave us

  486. your son

  487. you will give us

  488. all things.

  489. So do it.

  490. Honor the promise.

  491. You gave us the ring.

  492. Give us the box.

  493. You gave us the Rolls Royce.

  494. Of course you're going

  495. to give us the key.

  496. You gave us your son.

  497. Will you not also

  498. graciously with him

  499. give us all things?

  500. That's God's promise to you.

  501. He said it clearly

  502. and explicitly

  503. here in his word.

  504. So what?

  505. Why does it all matter?

  506. It matters because

  507. if God is for us

  508. then nothing

  509. can be

  510. against us.

  511. It raises another question though.

  512. Why are we so confident

  513. that God is for us?

  514. What's the proof?

  515. I focused

  516. on

  517. the last half

  518. of verse 32

  519. that he would

  520. give us all things.

  521. Of course there's also

  522. the first half.

  523. He who did not

  524. spare his own son

  525. but gave him up

  526. for us all.

  527. When it says

  528. did not spare

  529. it is saying

  530. that God

  531. did not go

  532. easy on Jesus

  533. when he hung

  534. on the cross.

  535. God did not say

  536. you know

  537. I'm going to

  538. I'm going to

  539. put the weight

  540. of sin on you

  541. but we're going

  542. to make it

  543. a little easy.

  544. You know

  545. we're going to

  546. we're going to

  547. tilt the scales

  548. a little bit.

  549. No.

  550. When Jesus

  551. hung on the cross

  552. he bore the full

  553. the entire

  554. weight

  555. of our sin

  556. our rebellion

  557. against God.

  558. And he gave

  559. him up for us all.

  560. That all is speaking

  561. about the audience

  562. of the letter.

  563. Remember Paul's

  564. writing this

  565. to the churches

  566. in the city

  567. of Rome.

  568. By extension

  569. he's writing it

  570. to the entire

  571. church

  572. throughout history.

  573. God gave

  574. Jesus up

  575. for us all

  576. that is Christians

  577. throughout all

  578. time

  579. and space.

  580. And he gave up

  581. what was

  582. most

  583. valuable.

  584. It says

  585. it doesn't say

  586. he who did not

  587. spare a random

  588. person.

  589. No.

  590. He who did

  591. not spare

  592. his own

  593. son.

  594. If you're a

  595. parent

  596. is there

  597. anything

  598. in this world

  599. that you love

  600. more than

  601. your children?

  602. he who did

  603. not spare

  604. his own

  605. son.

  606. The most

  607. intimate

  608. relationship

  609. that is the

  610. relationship

  611. enjoyed by the

  612. persons in the

  613. Trinity

  614. suffered

  615. the most

  616. intense

  617. separation.

  618. The most

  619. intimate

  620. relationship

  621. suffered

  622. the most

  623. intense

  624. separation.

  625. If God

  626. was willing

  627. to do that

  628. and he was

  629. and if God

  630. did that

  631. and he did

  632. he will

  633. do

  634. everything

  635. else.

  636. And he'll

  637. do it

  638. because of

  639. Christ.

  640. he who

  641. did not

  642. spare

  643. his own

  644. son

  645. but gave

  646. him up

  647. for us

  648. all.

  649. How will

  650. he not

  651. also

  652. with him

  653. graciously

  654. give us

  655. all

  656. things?

  657. Let's

  658. pray.

  659. Our

  660. Father in

  661. heaven we do

  662. praise you

  663. and thank you

  664. for your

  665. love.

  666. Love

  667. beyond what

  668. we can

  669. fully

  670. comprehend

  671. or understand

  672. or imagine.

  673. We ask that

  674. you would

  675. remind us

  676. of that

  677. this morning.

  678. That it

  679. would give

  680. us the

  681. deep

  682. security

  683. confidence

  684. joy that

  685. Paul talks

  686. about here.

  687. That we

  688. would live

  689. life knowing

  690. that because

  691. you are

  692. for us

  693. nothing

  694. can be

  695. against us.

  696. We ask

  697. all of these

  698. things in the

  699. mighty name

  700. of Jesus

  701. Christ.

  702. Amen.

  703. Amen.
