  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. Today we are continuing this morning our series in the book of Genesis which we were in, you'll remember, last summer.

  3. Last summer, summer 2025, we were in the story of Abraham. Of course, Genesis tells the larger story, the origin story of God's people, Israel.

  4. And so last summer we were in chapters 11 through 25 which talk about Abraham.

  5. This summer we're in the story of Isaac and Jacob, mostly Jacob, chapters 25 through 36.

  6. And to a certain extent, it's kind of the same theme of last summer. Remember our question was, what does it look like to follow God in faith?

  7. And that will continue in the Isaac-Jacob story. We're also going to see some new layers though, some new themes that get special emphasis.

  8. One of them was introduced last week. Andy talked about this, this emphasis on God's faithfulness.

  9. So we have God's faithfulness to his covenant in the midst of human failure. Remember Andy pointed out last week that there's no good guys in the story.

  10. Everyone's flawed and imperfect. God's faithfulness also, and this is kind of the emphasis this week, God's faithfulness generation by generation.

  11. So we finished chapter 25 last week, the birth of the twins, Jacob and Esau, to Isaac and Rebekah.

  12. This week we're starting chapter 26, which is actually moving back in time.

  13. So chapter 26 is going to tell us about some things that happened before the birth of the twins,

  14. and it is about Isaac taking on the mantle of Abraham.

  15. And so you're going to hear some things, if you were with us last year, that sound familiar,

  16. because there's going to be some repetition from chapter 12.

  17. When God comes to Abraham, he's now going to say the same things to Isaac.

  18. And so this passage, this chapter, is ultimately about God's faithfulness to his covenant.

  19. So with that, I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 26.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  20. You'll find it on page 7 of your worship guide.

  21. And as we turn to it, remember, Proverbs chapter 30 tells us every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  22. He's a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  23. And so that's why we read now Genesis 26, starting at verse 1.

  24. Now there was a famine in the land besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham.

  25. And Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech, king of the Philistines.

  26. And the Lord appeared to him and said,

  27. Do not go down to Egypt.

  28. Dwell in the land of which I shall tell you.

  29. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you.

  30. For to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands.

  31. And I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham, your father.

  32. And I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven,

  33. and will give to your offspring all these lands.

  34. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.

  35. Because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge,

  36. my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

  37. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  38. Our Father in heaven, we do this morning praise you and thank you once again

  39. that you have brought us together on a Sunday morning

  40. to sing praises to you, to hear from you in your word.

  41. Lord, we ask that you would pour out your Holy Spirit

  42. in a powerful and special way among us here and now.

  43. That you'd be at work by your word.

  44. That you would open up our eyes, you'd unstop our ears.

  45. That you would soften our hearts, you'd clear our minds.

  46. That we would be able to see and hear and believe and understand

  47. everything that you've written for us in your word.

  48. Most of all, we ask that you would set our eyes on Jesus,

  49. that we would see him clearly,

  50. that he would be more beautiful to us than ever before.

  51. And we ask all of these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  52. Amen.

  53. There is an important concept in police work or criminal investigations

  54. that I imagine some of you are already familiar with,

  55. and it is the idea of a chain of custody.

  56. And the chain of custody is a list of who had an item in their possession

  57. and when they had that item.

  58. So imagine there's a crime scene,

  59. you come to the scene, you're the police after the fact,

  60. and there's a knife there at the scene,

  61. and so you pick it up.

  62. At that point, you have to keep track of who has the knife

  63. and when they had it from the moment it is taken.

  64. And if there's a gap in the chain of custody,

  65. well, it's going to be very hard for you to use that knife as evidence.

  66. So you take me to court, and you could say,

  67. Matthew, your fingerprints are on the knife.

  68. We think you're the murderer.

  69. And I would say, okay, show me your chain of custody.

  70. Because if there's a gap,

  71. we know that's when you planted my fingerprint on the knife.

  72. You have to prove that you knew where it was at all times.

  73. Now you might be wondering,

  74. what in the world does chain of custody have to do

  75. with the book of Genesis chapter 26?

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  76. I'm glad you're wondering that because I'm going to tell you.

  77. September 2025, we ended the Abraham story,

  78. and then we return to our series in the book of Genesis.

  79. And in the first half of Genesis chapter 25,

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  80. which we looked at September of last year,

  81. Abraham dies.

  82. And Abraham's death raises this question,

  83. who will inherit the promises that God made?

  84. God made promises to Abraham over and over again.

  85. He gave him these blessings, these commands,

  86. these promises in Genesis chapter 12 and 13 and 15 and 17.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  87. They were promises about land and offspring

  88. and blessing to the nations.

  89. God said that he was going to make Abraham's name great.

  90. He said that Abraham was going to inherit

  91. and possess the land of Canaan,

  92. and that not just a king,

  93. but kings would come from Abraham's line.

  94. So the big picture,

  95. the main point of this passage,

  96. these first five verses,

  97. is this,

  98. is this,

  99. to confirm that God's promises to Abraham

  100. do indeed pass to Isaac.

  101. The point is to confirm,

  102. to validate that in fact Isaac is the right heir,

  103. the one to receive everything given to his father.

  104. In fact, it's explicit in verse three.

  105. I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham,

  106. your father.

  107. So chapter 26 is giving us the chain of custody

  108. of God's promises.

  109. By the way, this is going to continue throughout the book.

  110. So we see it go from Abraham to Isaac.

  111. Isaac then is going to bless Jacob, chapter 27.

  112. If you're familiar with the story,

  113. you know it's a stolen blessing.

  114. And then what happens?

  115. Jacob, near the end of Genesis,

  116. is then going to pass the blessing on

  117. to the 12 tribes of Israel.

  118. So this is the first transfer,

  119. but not the last, in the book.

  120. We've gotten ahead of ourselves a little bit though.

  121. There's three things we're going to look at this morning

  122. as we see God's faithfulness to his covenant.

  123. And the three things are faith,

  124. and promise, and mission.

  125. You don't need to write those down.

  126. They're on page seven of your worship guide

  127. because they're conveniently the title of the sermon.

  128. So let's look first at faith.

  129. Verse one tells us,

  130. now there was a famine in the land

  131. besides the former famine that was in the days of Abraham.

  132. And Isaac went to Gerar to Abimelech,

  133. king of the Philistines.

  134. So the former famine is referring to Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  135. You may remember this.

  136. Abraham experienced a famine,

  137. and so then Abraham goes down to Egypt.

  138. The larger point though here,

  139. the reason he's telling us,

  140. hey, there was a famine before,

  141. is not really about the famines.

  142. It's part of this larger comparison

  143. that he's making to say,

  144. look, I want you to see all the ways

  145. in which Abraham is connected to Isaac.

  146. Remember, that's the focus of this passage.

  147. So link Abraham to Isaac.

  148. Abraham had a famine.

  149. Isaac has a famine.

  150. And therefore, get again and again

  151. at this continuity of God's faithfulness to his people.

  152. Abraham faced a famine.

  153. Isaac faces a famine.

  154. Now, what do you want to do if you're in a famine?

  155. If you're in a famine,

  156. the logical thing would be for you to go down to Egypt.

  157. Why?

  158. Well, the reason there's a famine,

  159. most likely,

  160. is that there's not enough water.

  161. And who has water?

  162. Egypt has water.

  163. There is this thing called the Nile River.

  164. What did Abraham do when he faced a famine?

  165. Abraham, chapter 12, goes down to Egypt.

  166. So Isaac here is doing the logical, rational,

  167. smart, wise, prudent thing.

  168. He is most likely starting his trip down to Egypt.

  169. So he goes to Gerar,

  170. which is closer to the coast than Bir-le-Hi-Roi,

  171. which is where he is.

  172. And what happens next, then,

  173. should come to us as a surprise.

  174. Verse 1, Abraham's doing the smart thing.

  175. Verse 2,

  176. the Lord appeared to him and said,

  177. do not go down to Egypt.

  178. That's a big ask.

  179. A command is counterintuitive,

  180. but it goes against all human wisdom.

  181. And it's not just that he's not going to go down

  182. to where the Nile is,

  183. to where all the water is.

  184. It's going to be even worse than that.

  185. Verse 3,

  186. he tells him,

  187. sojourn in this land.

  188. If you're familiar with Old Testament words,

  189. you know that a sojourner

  190. is a foreigner,

  191. an immigrant.

  192. So a sojourner is always at a disadvantage.

  193. They are in a place of political

  194. and social vulnerability.

  195. So don't go to Egypt.

  196. Actually stay in this other place

  197. where you're standing.

  198. That's a little shaky.

  199. And so,

  200. what happens here with Isaac

  201. is similar,

  202. once again,

  203. to what happened with Abraham

  204. in chapter 12.

  205. Chapter 12,

  206. Abraham

  207. had to exercise faith

  208. when God said,

  209. go.

  210. Chapter 26,

  211. Isaac

  212. must exercise faith

  213. when God

  214. says

  215. stay.

  216. Abraham

  217. has to have faith

  218. to go.

  219. Isaac

  220. has to have faith

  221. to stay.

  222. Now,

  223. as I mentioned,

  224. staying away from Egypt

  225. is a big ask.

  226. And because it's a big ask,

  227. it also requires

  228. a big

  229. promise.

  230. promise.

  231. Remember I told you,

  232. we're talking about faith,

  233. promise,

  234. and mission.

  235. We talked about the faith,

  236. that's what it requires

  237. for Abraham to stay.

  238. Now that moves us,

  239. it helps us understand

  240. why God then

  241. immediately

  242. goes on to explain

  243. his promise.

  244. That's in verses

  245. three and four.

  246. Sojourn in this land

  247. and I will be with you

  248. and will bless you.

  249. For to you

  250. and to your offspring

  251. I will give all these lands.

  252. And I will establish

  253. the oath

  254. that I swore to Abraham,

  255. your father.

  256. I will multiply

  257. your offspring

  258. as the stars of heaven

  259. and I will give

  260. to your offspring

  261. all these lands.

  262. And in your offspring

  263. all the nations

  264. of the earth

  265. shall be blessed.

  266. Yes, Abraham,

  267. what I am telling you

  268. to do

  269. makes no sense

  270. from a human perspective.

  271. but

  272. and

  273. verse three

  274. you will have

  275. my presence

  276. and my blessing.

  277. But

  278. and

  279. verse three

  280. everything I promised

  281. to Abraham

  282. is now given

  283. to you.

  284. Yes,

  285. verse three

  286. you will

  287. receive the land

  288. to you and your offspring

  289. I will give

  290. all these lands.

  291. Verse four

  292. he repeats it again

  293. not just the land

  294. but the lands

  295. plural.

  296. verse four

  297. your people

  298. will be as many

  299. as the stars

  300. of the heavens.

  301. Yeah,

  302. it doesn't make sense

  303. for you to stay in Gerar

  304. but you know what?

  305. I'll be with you

  306. I'll bless you.

  307. The promise

  308. is even greater

  309. than the command.

  310. The promise

  311. to Abraham

  312. is now

  313. the promise

  314. to Isaac.

  315. In case we missed it

  316. in these five verses

  317. Abraham's name

  318. appears three times

  319. verse one

  320. verse three

  321. verse five.

  322. He's going to give

  323. Abraham

  324. and now he's going

  325. to give Isaac

  326. land

  327. and people

  328. and blessing.

  329. Yeah,

  330. it doesn't make sense

  331. from a human perspective

  332. to stay in Gerar

  333. and it also

  334. doesn't matter

  335. and it doesn't matter

  336. because God

  337. has promised

  338. his presence

  339. and his blessing

  340. to Isaac.

  341. Point is this

  342. and we talked

  343. about this before

  344. obedience

  345. to God's

  346. commands

  347. are always

  348. enabled

  349. by belief

  350. in his promises.

  351. Obedience

  352. to God's

  353. commands

  354. always find

  355. their power

  356. their motivation

  357. in the promises

  358. he's made

  359. to his people.

  360. Faith

  361. and promise

  362. always

  363. go together.

  364. It is not

  365. a coincidence

  366. that God

  367. says stay

  368. and then

  369. immediately

  370. reminds

  371. Isaac

  372. why.

  373. God's

  374. commands

  375. for us

  376. also

  377. go

  378. against

  379. human wisdom.

  380. They're also

  381. counterintuitive.

  382. They are also

  383. things that

  384. don't make sense.

  385. Wait,

  386. so you're

  387. telling me

  388. God

  389. that abundance

  390. in this life

  391. actually comes

  392. from giving

  393. things away.

  394. doesn't make

  395. any sense.

  396. God

  397. says be

  398. generous

  399. that's the

  400. command

  401. and then he

  402. says I will

  403. provide for you.

  404. That's the

  405. promise.

  406. Wait,

  407. you're telling

  408. me that

  409. satisfaction

  410. in this

  411. life

  412. over against

  413. what the

  414. world tells

  415. me

  416. actually

  417. comes

  418. from

  419. containing

  420. and restraining

  421. sex

  422. so that it's

  423. only within

  424. marriage.

  425. that doesn't

  426. make sense.

  427. God

  428. says be

  429. pure

  430. in heart.

  431. That's the

  432. command.

  433. And then he

  434. says I will

  435. give you

  436. real

  437. and true

  438. joy.

  439. Joy

  440. that the

  441. world

  442. cannot

  443. offer

  444. to you.

  445. That's the

  446. promise.

  447. Wait,

  448. so you're

  449. telling me

  450. God

  451. that true

  452. and real

  453. and lasting

  454. and full

  455. and final

  456. justice

  457. come from

  458. trusting

  459. you

  460. and not

  461. from

  462. taking

  463. revenge.

  464. Doesn't

  465. make sense.

  466. God

  467. says trust

  468. me.

  469. That's the

  470. command.

  471. I will

  472. punish

  473. the wicked.

  474. That's the

  475. promise.

  476. Trust me.

  477. Believe

  478. me.

  479. I'm

  480. actually the

  481. one who

  482. has the

  483. good stuff,

  484. the best

  485. stuff,

  486. the real

  487. stuff.

  488. Faith

  489. and promise

  490. go together.

  491. And so

  492. the command

  493. in verse

  494. two,

  495. do not

  496. go down

  497. to Egypt

  498. is in

  499. some sense

  500. actually a

  501. question.

  502. Do you

  503. trust me

  504. more than

  505. you trust

  506. what you

  507. can see

  508. with your

  509. eyes?

  510. Do you

  511. believe that

  512. I am

  513. going to

  514. provide for

  515. you?

  516. Do you

  517. believe my

  518. promises

  519. are real

  520. and true?

  521. are you

  522. going to

  523. put me

  524. first?

  525. Are you

  526. going to

  527. put me

  528. first not

  529. just in

  530. the words

  531. that you

  532. say and

  533. the songs

  534. that you

  535. sing in

  536. Sunday

  537. morning?

  538. Are you

  539. going to

  540. put me

  541. first when

  542. the rubber

  543. meets the

  544. road?

  545. Do you

  546. really

  547. believe?

  548. Jesus

  549. says something

  550. similar to

  551. us in

  552. Matthew

  553. chapter

  554. six,

  555. but seek

  556. first the

  557. kingdom of

  558. God and

  559. his

  560. righteousness

  561. and all

  562. these things

  563. will be

  564. added to

  565. you.

  566. Seek

  567. first the

  568. kingdom of

  569. God,

  570. command.

  571. All these

  572. things will

  573. be added to

  574. you,

  575. promise.

  576. Faith and

  577. promise always

  578. go together.

  579. Okay,

  580. I promised

  581. you faith and

  582. promise and

  583. mission.

  584. We've seen

  585. faith.

  586. Abraham had

  587. to exercise

  588. to stay.

  589. We've seen

  590. God's promise

  591. of his

  592. presence and

  593. his blessing

  594. to enable

  595. that.

  596. That takes

  597. us to

  598. the idea

  599. of mission.

  600. Remember,

  601. we talked

  602. about this

  603. back in

  604. chapter 12.

  605. God's

  606. blessing is

  607. not just

  608. for Abraham,

  609. not just

  610. for Isaac,

  611. not just

  612. for their

  613. line.

  614. No,

  615. the blessing

  616. to Abraham

  617. and Isaac

  618. is,

  619. verse

  620. four,

  621. for a

  622. blessing

  623. to the

  624. nations.

  625. I will

  626. multiply

  627. your

  628. offspring

  629. as the

  630. stars of

  631. heaven and

  632. will give

  633. to your

  634. offspring all

  635. these lands.

  636. That's great.

  637. And in

  638. your

  639. offspring,

  640. all the

  641. nations of

  642. the earth

  643. shall be

  644. blessed.

  645. So yes,

  646. it is a

  647. blessing to

  648. you.

  649. It's not

  650. less than

  651. that.

  652. But it is

  653. more than

  654. that.

  655. it is

  656. also a

  657. blessing

  658. through

  659. you.

  660. How will

  661. all the

  662. nations be

  663. blessed?

  664. Well,

  665. we talked

  666. about it

  667. in chapter

  668. 12.

  669. Jim read

  670. it for

  671. us this

  672. morning.

  673. Galatians

    Galatians 3:10

  674. chapter 3,

  675. verse 10.

  676. That was on

  677. page 3 of

  678. your worship

  679. guide,

  680. by the way.

  681. So that

  682. in Christ

  683. Jesus,

  684. the blessing

  685. of Abraham

  686. might come

  687. to the

  688. Gentiles,

  689. so that

  690. we might

  691. receive the

  692. promised

  693. spirit

  694. through

  695. faith.

  696. How will

  697. all the

  698. nations be

  699. blessed?

  700. All the

  701. nations will

  702. be blessed

  703. because the

  704. multiplication

  705. of the

  706. offspring of

  707. Abraham,

  708. Isaac,

  709. Jacob,

  710. and Joseph

  711. will

  712. ultimately

  713. lead to

  714. the birth

  715. of Jesus

  716. Christ.

  717. And Jesus

  718. Christ will

  719. come as a

  720. man, a

  721. real human,

  722. 100% God,

  723. and 100%

  724. human,

  725. and live

  726. on this

  727. earth,

  728. the perfect

  729. life that

  730. we should

  731. have lived.

  732. And then

  733. he will

  734. die the

  735. death that

  736. we should

  737. have died,

  738. taking the

  739. punishment we

  740. deserve,

  741. and then God

  742. the Father,

  743. by the power

  744. of the Holy

  745. Spirit,

  746. will raise

  747. him from

  748. the dead,

  749. showing once

  750. and for all

  751. that it

  752. actually worked.

  753. That is the

  754. blessing of

  755. the nations

  756. that comes

  757. through Abraham.

  758. Abraham.

  759. That is what

  760. allows us

  761. to have

  762. God's

  763. presence

  764. and his

  765. blessing.

  766. The New

  767. Testament makes

  768. it clear.

  769. Matthew chapter

  770. one starts out

  771. with a genealogy.

  772. Genealogy of

  773. Jesus Christ

  774. and the first

  775. two names,

  776. Abraham,

  777. Isaac.

  778. The point is

  779. this.

  780. The blessing

  781. that comes

  782. to the

  783. nations

  784. is the

  785. blessing

  786. that is

  787. through

  788. Abraham

  789. and Isaac

  790. because

  791. and only

  792. because

  793. they lead

  794. to Jesus

  795. Christ.

  796. Faith,

  797. promise,

  798. mission.

  799. Now,

  800. why do you

  801. care about

  802. the chain

  803. of custody?

  804. Why does

  805. it matter

  806. to you

  807. in

  808. 2026

  809. in Colorado

  810. Springs

  811. that the

  812. blessing

  813. was passed

  814. clearly from

  815. Abraham to

  816. Isaac,

  817. that the

  818. blessing will

  819. be clearly

  820. passed from

  821. Isaac to

  822. Jacob and

  823. from Jacob

  824. to Joseph?

  825. The reason

  826. that you

  827. care is

  828. because you

  829. care about

  830. God's

  831. faithfulness

  832. to his

  833. promises.

  834. You care

  835. that God

  836. really means

  837. what he says

  838. when he says

  839. he's going

  840. to be

  841. faithful

  842. from

  843. generation

  844. to

  845. generation.

  846. That his

  847. steadfast love

  848. really will

  849. continue

  850. forever.

  851. His

  852. commitment,

  853. his promises,

  854. he will

  855. not go

  856. back on.

  857. No,

  858. he's going

  859. to keep

  860. it.

  861. It's

  862. another

  863. generation

  864. following

  865. after the

  866. Lord.

  867. It's

  868. another

  869. man

  870. trusting

  871. God's

  872. promises.

  873. God's

  874. faithfulness

  875. is

  876. another

  877. faithfulness

  878. generation

  879. to generation

  880. through

  881. specific

  882. families

  883. over the

  884. course of

  885. history

  886. that leads

  887. to Jesus

  888. Christ.

  889. And now

  890. his

  891. faithfulness

  892. that includes

  893. you.

  894. Christian,

  895. if you are a

  896. follower of

  897. Jesus Christ,

  898. if you're going

  899. after him in

  900. faith,

  901. the encouragement

  902. for you is

  903. this.

  904. God kept his

  905. promise to

  906. Abraham and

  907. Isaac.

  908. God will keep

  909. his promise to

  910. you.

  911. He keeps it

  912. not because they

  913. were perfect

  914. or exemplary,

  915. not because they

  916. get it right.

  917. as we saw

  918. last week.

  919. In fact,

  920. they very much

  921. don't.

  922. No,

  923. it's because of

  924. his commitment

  925. to his promise,

  926. his covenant,

  927. his mission.

  928. That same

  929. commitment,

  930. that same

  931. promise,

  932. that same

  933. presence,

  934. that same

  935. blessing

  936. comes to

  937. you if

  938. you are

  939. in him.

  940. If you're

  941. in Christ,

  942. following

  943. after him

  944. in faith.

  945. Faith,

  946. promise,

  947. mission.

  948. Let's pray.

  949. Our

  950. Father in

  951. heaven,

  952. we do

  953. thank you

  954. and praise

  955. you for

  956. your steadfast

  957. love that

  958. continues

  959. generation to

  960. generation,

  961. relying not

  962. on us

  963. and our

  964. faithfulness,

  965. but on

  966. you and

  967. your commitment

  968. to your

  969. promise,

  970. that you

  971. will do

  972. what you

  973. said you

  974. would do.

  975. We ask

  976. that you

  977. would grow

  978. our hope

  979. and trust

  980. and faith

  981. in that,

  982. and that it

  983. would overflow

  984. into love

  985. and obedience

  986. to you.

  987. We ask

  988. these things

  989. in Jesus'

  990. name.

  991. Amen.
