  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  3. ! And it's my joy to bring God's word to you this morning.

  4. We're continuing our series in the book of Genesis.

  5. You'll remember that Genesis tells the origin story of God's people, Israel.

  6. And this summer we're looking at the story of Isaac and Jacob, mostly Jacob, which is in chapters 25 through 36.

  7. And to a certain extent we're asking the same question we asked last summer.

  8. You'll remember we were in the Abraham story and we said, what does it look like to follow God in faith?

  9. That question is going to continue for Isaac and Jacob, although as I mentioned last week we're going to have some new layers,

  10. some new themes that get brought to the forefront in this part of the story.

  11. So last week we looked at God's faithfulness to his covenant generation to generation.

  12. There's the passing on of the blessing from Abraham to Isaac.

  13. This week we're going to start a theme that is going to show up over and over in the book of Genesis,

  14. which is God's work in and through dysfunctional families.

  15. It's going to be a repeated theme.

  16. So remember chapter 25, we had the birth of the twins, Jacob and Esau, to Isaac and Rebekah.

  17. Now in chapter 26, we have gone back in time.

  18. Jacob and Esau have not been born yet.

  19. So this is back when Isaac and Rebekah were just the two of them before they had kids.

  20. You'll remember verses 1 through 5 of 26, Isaac took on the mantle of Abraham.

  21. Okay, that was our main focus last week.

  22. This week, it's not the mantle he takes on.

  23. Isaac takes on the sins of Abraham.

  24. So that's our topic this morning, generational sin.

  25. You'll see that the title of our sermon on page 7.

  26. That is sin patterns that are passed down from parents to their children.

  27. I'm going to talk about two things with that.

  28. First, we're going to talk about generational sin in general,

  29. the concept and idea of that.

  30. And then secondly, we'll look at the specific sins that get passed down through Abraham and his line.

  31. So with that, I invite you to turn with me now to Genesis chapter 26.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  32. You'll find it page 7 of your worship guide.

  33. And as we turn there, remember, Proverbs chapter 30 tells us,

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  34. Every word of God proves true.

  35. He's a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  36. And so that's why we read now Genesis chapter 26, starting at verse 6.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  37. So Isaac settled in Gerar.

  38. When the men of the place asked him about his wife, he said,

  39. She is my sister.

  40. For he feared to say, My wife.

  41. Thinking, lest the men of the place should kill me because of Rebekah,

  42. because she was attractive in appearance.

  43. When he had been there a long time,

  44. Abimelech, king of the Philistines, looked out of a window

  45. and saw Isaac laughing with Rebekah, his wife.

  46. So Abimelech called Isaac and said,

  47. Behold, she is your wife.

  48. How then could you say, she is my sister?

  49. Isaac said to him,

  50. Because I thought, lest I die because of her.

  51. Abimelech said,

  52. What is this you have done to us?

  53. One of the people might easily have lain with your wife,

  54. and you would have brought guilt upon us.

  55. So Abimelech warned all the people, saying,

  56. Whoever touches this man or his wife shall surely be put to death.

  57. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  58. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you and praise you again this morning,

  59. that you've given us life and breath to come before you.

  60. You've given us the health to gather.

  61. We thank you that you've given us your word to remind us

  62. of your great grace and mercy in Jesus Christ.

  63. We ask that you would be at work here and now in a special way,

  64. by your Holy Spirit,

  65. that you would penetrate our hearts and our minds with your word,

  66. that would lead us to great conviction,

  67. and even more than that,

  68. it would lead us to great love and devotion to Jesus Christ,

  69. that you would show us Jesus in his great beauty and glory and majesty.

  70. And we ask all of these things in his mighty name.

  71. Amen.

  72. I'm not as tall as Daniel Sanchez,

  73. so I have to bring this down a little bit.

  74. The story is told of a young couple, a newly married.

  75. Their first holiday rolls around,

  76. and so the wife cooks the family recipe of the roast

  77. that has been cooked for generations in her family.

  78. And before placing the roast in the oven,

  79. she cuts off the ends of the roast.

  80. Roast comes out.

  81. It's wonderful.

  82. Her husband compliments it.

  83. He says,

  84. Honey, this is a wonderful roast.

  85. It's the best I've ever had.

  86. But I have a question for you.

  87. Why did you cut off the ends of the roast?

  88. She says,

  89. That's how my mother did it.

  90. That's how it's done.

  91. So he calls up his mother-in-law and says,

  92. Why do you cut off the ends of the roast?

  93. And she says,

  94. That's the way my mother did it.

  95. That's how you cook a roast.

  96. And the husband thinks to himself,

  97. That doesn't make any sense.

  98. It's an expensive cut of meat.

  99. Why would you cut part of it off and throw it away?

  100. So he calls the grandmother.

  101. Why do you cut off the ends of the roast?

  102. And she said,

  103. Well, that's quite simple.

  104. I had a small oven.

  105. And that's the only way the roast would fit in the pan.

  106. So the grandmother's solution to a temporary problem

  107. becomes this permanent practice.

  108. And on the one hand,

  109. it is completely irrational.

  110. Right?

  111. They have larger ovens now.

  112. They don't have to cut off the ends of the roast.

  113. On the other hand,

  114. it makes complete sense.

  115. Because patterns, habits, values, quirks,

  116. get passed down generation to generation.

  117. And if you've been married for more than a few minutes,

  118. of course you know this.

  119. You don't just marry a person.

  120. You marry their family

  121. and the currents,

  122. the forces that have been flowing there

  123. for years and years and years.

  124. You know this intuitively.

  125. If you look at a family,

  126. you see patterns.

  127. You might say,

  128. Hey, you know,

  129. that family,

  130. they,

  131. they are like that.

  132. They are generous.

  133. They are kind.

  134. They are weird.

  135. They are smart.

  136. Whatever it is.

  137. Right?

  138. And not just harmless patterns.

  139. Not just quirks.

  140. There's also sin patterns.

  141. They are really greedy.

  142. They are really rude.

  143. Whatever it is,

  144. the patterns of sin,

  145. things that are passed

  146. from parents

  147. to their children.

  148. Because that's what we see here

  149. in this passage in Genesis.

  150. Verse 7,

  151. Isaac lies about his wife,

  152. Rebecca,

  153. out of fear.

  154. When the men of the place

  155. asked him about his wife,

  156. he said,

  157. She is my sister.

  158. For he feared to say,

  159. My wife,

  160. thinking,

  161. lest the men of the place

  162. should kill me

  163. because of Rebecca,

  164. because she was attractive

  165. in appearance.

  166. Now,

  167. if you were here with us

  168. last summer,

  169. this should sound super familiar.

  170. Abraham did this

  171. not once,

  172. but twice.

  173. Remember Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  174. Abraham heads down

  175. into Egypt.

  176. He is scared,

  177. and so he says,

  178. His wife Sarai

  179. is his sister,

  180. and Pharaoh takes her.

  181. Then,

  182. God afflicts Pharaoh

  183. and his household

  184. with great plagues,

  185. and so Pharaoh

  186. kicks Abraham

  187. and Sarai

  188. out of Egypt.

  189. If that weren't enough,

  190. it shows up again,

  191. chapter 20,

  192. Abraham is in Gerar,

  193. the exact same place

  194. that Isaac is in now.

  195. Notice verse 6,

  196. so Isaac settled

  197. in Gerar.

  198. It's not just

  199. the same pattern,

  200. it's the same place,

  201. and this,

  202. again,

  203. Abraham encounters

  204. Abimelech.

  205. Now,

  206. whether it's the same

  207. Abimelech,

  208. it could be.

  209. It could also be

  210. that Abimelech's

  211. what they call

  212. a dynastic name,

  213. which you're familiar

  214. with with Egypt.

  215. There's not just one Pharaoh,

  216. but many Pharaohs.

  217. Pharaoh is just

  218. what you call the ruler.

  219. So,

  220. maybe Isaac is dealing

  221. with the same Abimelech

  222. from chapter 20.

  223. It's possible.

  224. Maybe he isn't.

  225. Either way,

  226. Abraham says Sarah,

  227. because her name

  228. has changed at this point,

  229. is his sister.

  230. Abimelech takes Sarah.

  231. This time,

  232. God warns Abimelech

  233. in a dream,

  234. Abimelech returns Sarah.

  235. Abraham runs

  236. the same play twice.

  237. And so,

  238. it's not a coincidence

  239. that Isaac here

  240. in this passage

  241. experiences the same fear

  242. and has the same

  243. crafty response.

  244. Dad,

  245. that is Abraham,

  246. feared man

  247. more than God.

  248. And so,

  249. the son,

  250. that is Isaac,

  251. fears man

  252. more than God.

  253. Dad,

  254. that is Abraham,

  255. lied

  256. rather than trusting

  257. God.

  258. And so,

  259. the son,

  260. that is Isaac,

  261. lies rather than

  262. trusting God.

  263. All of this

  264. is tied up

  265. in this basic

  266. principle

  267. of reality.

  268. And it's this.

  269. God has designed

  270. the world

  271. in such a way

  272. that the family

  273. has incredible

  274. power

  275. and influence.

  276. God has

  277. designed

  278. the universe.

  279. He set it up

  280. so that families

  281. are what shape us

  282. and form us.

  283. It can be negative,

  284. it can be positive,

  285. it can be for good

  286. or for ill.

  287. Counselors will tell you

  288. there's no more

  289. important relationship

  290. in your entire life

  291. than the relationship

  292. you have

  293. with your parents.

  294. That's the way

  295. God's made things.

  296. And so,

  297. our parents'

  298. practices

  299. become our

  300. path

  301. of least

  302. resistance.

  303. The stories

  304. that your parents

  305. lived by

  306. become the default

  307. stories for you

  308. to live by.

  309. Now,

  310. don't hear what I'm

  311. not saying.

  312. Those things are not

  313. your destiny.

  314. This isn't set in stone,

  315. but they're your default.

  316. How did your parents

  317. deal with pain

  318. or stress

  319. or fear?

  320. That's often

  321. going to become

  322. the way that you

  323. deal with pain

  324. or stress

  325. or fear.

  326. Not your destiny,

  327. but your default.

  328. pain

  329. You'll see this

  330. on page 8

  331. of your worship guide,

  332. a quote from

  333. a woman named

  334. Steffi Wagner.

  335. Pain

  336. travels

  337. through

  338. families

  339. until

  340. someone

  341. is ready

  342. to feel it.

  343. Now,

  344. I'm going to

  345. rephrase that

  346. for us.

  347. As Christians,

  348. we might put it

  349. this way.

  350. Sin

  351. travels

  352. through

  353. families

  354. until

  355. someone

  356. is willing

  357. to repent.

  358. Abraham's

  359. line

  360. is going

  361. to continue

  362. to be

  363. crafty

  364. and conniving

  365. until

  366. someone

  367. is willing

  368. to feel

  369. vulnerable

  370. and trust

  371. God.

  372. Abraham's

  373. family

  374. is going

  375. to continue

  376. to be

  377. a family

  378. of schemes

  379. until

  380. they're willing

  381. to let

  382. their grasp

  383. go

  384. and trust

  385. that God

  386. is in

  387. control.

  388. Now,

  389. this isn't

  390. saying that

  391. we're not

  392. responsible

  393. for our

  394. own sin.

  395. We are,

  396. all of us.

  397. It is saying

  398. our parents'

  399. patterns are

  400. going to

  401. determine

  402. which sins

  403. are easier

  404. for us,

  405. which are

  406. more tempting.

  407. It's possible

  408. to take this

  409. too far.

  410. It is a

  411. principle.

  412. It is not

  413. an unbreakable

  414. rule.

  415. But it's a

  416. powerful principle.

  417. You see on

  418. page 7

  419. of your

  420. worship guide,

  421. I've shown

  422. you guys

  423. this quote

  424. before.

  425. Communities

  426. have their

  427. own stories

  428. and those

  429. stories

  430. are

  431. contagious.

  432. Families

  433. have their

  434. own

  435. stories.

  436. Those

  437. stories

  438. are also

  439. contagious.

  440. Contagious.

  441. do you

  442. know

  443. the story

  444. that your

  445. family

  446. has been

  447. telling?

  448. Do you

  449. know the

  450. story

  451. that was

  452. handed to

  453. you

  454. by previous

  455. generations?

  456. Do you

  457. understand it?

  458. Can you

  459. name it?

  460. Do you

  461. know what

  462. has been

  463. passed along?

  464. Do you

  465. know your

  466. inheritance?

  467. For good

  468. or for

  469. ill?

  470. If you

  471. don't know

  472. it,

  473. and if you

  474. can't name

  475. it,

  476. you have

  477. some homework.

  478. Because whether

  479. you know it

  480. or not,

  481. it is

  482. there.

  483. Now some

  484. of it, I'm

  485. sure, is

  486. really good and

  487. positive.

  488. We've talked

  489. about this

  490. before.

  491. Everyone's

  492. made in the

  493. image of

  494. God.

  495. Everyone has

  496. something good

  497. and beautiful

  498. about them.

  499. I'm

  500. confident that

  501. your parents

  502. have passed

  503. on something

  504. good to

  505. you.

  506. Some of

  507. it is not

  508. so good.

  509. And God

  510. is calling

  511. you to

  512. repent of

  513. those things

  514. and to

  515. turn away

  516. from them.

  517. the question

  518. is, do

  519. you know

  520. what places

  521. those are?

  522. Do you

  523. know the

  524. story your

  525. family has

  526. told?

  527. what you

  528. have

  529. inherited?

  530. I want

  531. to talk

  532. for just

  533. one minute

  534. about what

  535. you're passing

  536. on because

  537. of course

  538. there's a

  539. bit of a

  540. warning here

  541. for parents.

  542. Robert

  543. Murray McShane

  544. who is a

  545. Scottish pastor

  546. in the

  547. 19th century

  548. said this,

  549. this is on

  550. page 8

  551. of your

  552. worship guide,

  553. what your

  554. people need

  555. from you

  556. most

  557. is your

  558. own

  559. personal

  560. holiness.

  561. Now he's

  562. speaking to

  563. pastors,

  564. so we'll

  565. change this,

  566. what your

  567. children

  568. need from

  569. you most

  570. is your

  571. own

  572. personal

  573. holiness.

  574. That's part

  575. of their

  576. inheritance.

  577. That's part

  578. of what you're

  579. passing on.

  580. Are you

  581. passing on

  582. a story

  583. of trusting

  584. God and

  585. his providence?

  586. Are you

  587. passing on

  588. a story

  589. of righteousness

  590. and holiness?

  591. Is that

  592. what they're

  593. receiving?

  594. That's more

  595. important than

  596. money and

  597. experiences

  598. and getting

  599. into a good

  600. school.

  601. Those things

  602. aren't bad,

  603. they're just

  604. not the most

  605. important.

  606. Look with me

  607. for a minute

  608. on the back

  609. of your

  610. worship guide.

  611. there's this

  612. haunting quote

  613. from Richard

  614. Rohr.

  615. By the way,

  616. I don't

  617. recommend this

  618. book or

  619. Richard Rohr

  620. necessarily.

  621. I'm just

  622. giving you

  623. this quote.

  624. If we do

  625. not transform

  626. our pain,

  627. we will

  628. most assuredly

  629. transmit it.

  630. Usually to

  631. those closest

  632. to us,

  633. our family,

  634. our neighbors,

  635. our coworkers,

  636. and,

  637. this is the

  638. hard part,

  639. invariably

  640. the most

  641. vulnerable,

  642. our children.

  643. And I'll

  644. change this

  645. quote as

  646. well.

  647. If we do

  648. not repent

  649. of our

  650. sin,

  651. it will

  652. become

  653. baggage

  654. that we

  655. hand off

  656. to our

  657. children and

  658. they will

  659. get to

  660. unpack.

  661. It will

  662. that we

  663. your sins

  664. become

  665. your

  666. children's

  667. default.

  668. And they

  669. will have

  670. to choose

  671. whether to

  672. accept it

  673. or to

  674. repent

  675. and head

  676. in a

  677. different

  678. direction.

  679. What

  680. story,

  681. what baggage

  682. do you

  683. want to

  684. pass

  685. along?

  686. what your

  687. people

  688. need from

  689. you most

  690. is your

  691. own

  692. personal

  693. holiness.

  694. I told you

  695. we would

  696. talk about

  697. two things,

  698. generational

  699. sin in

  700. general and

  701. the specific

  702. sins of

  703. Abraham's

  704. line.

  705. We've

  706. talked about

  707. generational

  708. sin,

  709. so we're

  710. going to

  711. pick up

  712. the story

  713. of Abraham.

  714. Abraham,

  715. verse 8

  716. tells us

  717. when he

  718. had been

  719. there a

  720. long

  721. time.

  722. Commentators

  723. make a

  724. big deal

  725. out of

  726. that phrase

  727. because what

  728. they say

  729. what this

  730. tells us

  731. is that

  732. Abraham

  733. had this

  734. fear,

  735. he had

  736. this fear

  737. that people

  738. were going

  739. to head,

  740. or sorry,

  741. not Abraham,

  742. Isaac had

  743. this fear,

  744. Isaac had

  745. this fear

  746. that people

  747. were going

  748. to go

  749. for

  750. Rebecca,

  751. right?

  752. He's

  753. there a

  754. long

  755. time and

  756. what's

  757. happened?

  758. Nothing.

  759. No one

  760. has made

  761. a move

  762. for

  763. Rebecca.

  764. Isaac's

  765. fear

  766. was

  767. a

  768. fantasy.

  769. He made

  770. it up.

  771. They had

  772. all this

  773. time.

  774. They had

  775. all this

  776. time to

  777. head after

  778. Rebecca,

  779. and no

  780. one did.

  781. There was

  782. a study

  783. that came

  784. out in

  785. 2019

  786. about people

  787. who experienced

  788. generalized

  789. anxiety

  790. disorder,

  791. and they

  792. tracked all

  793. the things

  794. that they

  795. worried

  796. about to

  797. see if

  798. they

  799. actually

  800. came

  801. true.

  802. 91.4%

  803. of worry

  804. predictions

  805. did not

  806. come true.

  807. The most

  808. common

  809. percentage

  810. of untrue

  811. worries

  812. per person

  813. was

  814. 100%.

  815. In other

  816. words,

  817. they're

  818. worrying

  819. about all

  820. these things

  821. that are

  822. not going

  823. to come

  824. to pass.

  825. The same

  826. thing here

  827. happens

  828. with Isaac.

  829. He's

  830. put all

  831. this work

  832. into controlling

  833. the world

  834. and protecting

  835. himself

  836. for nothing.

  837. Of course,

  838. it reminds

  839. me of that

  840. line from

  841. Crime and

  842. Punishment,

  843. which is on

  844. page 7

  845. of your

  846. worship guide.

  847. Your worst

  848. sin is that

  849. you have

  850. destroyed and

  851. betrayed

  852. yourself

  853. for nothing.

  854. Isaac has

  855. gotten all

  856. worked up

  857. about something

  858. that's not

  859. real.

  860. He lies

  861. about his

  862. wife.

  863. He's

  864. sneaking

  865. around.

  866. He refuses

  867. to trust

  868. God.

  869. All for

  870. a fantasy.

  871. That takes

  872. us to

  873. verse 8

  874. again.

  875. Abimelech,

  876. king of

  877. the Philistines,

  878. looked out

  879. of a

  880. window and

  881. saw Isaac

  882. laughing with

  883. Rebecca,

  884. his wife.

  885. Now,

  886. we can tell

  887. from the

  888. context here,

  889. laughing is

  890. a euphemism.

  891. Laughing is

  892. apparently

  893. something that

  894. brothers and

  895. sisters never

  896. do.

  897. Verse 9,

  898. he says,

  899. how could

  900. you do

  901. this?

  902. In other

  903. words,

  904. even the

  905. pagans know

  906. this is a

  907. terrible idea.

  908. Verse 10,

  909. you could have

  910. brought guilt

  911. on us.

  912. And so,

  913. there's this

  914. rich irony,

  915. the same

  916. irony that

  917. was in

  918. chapter 20

  919. with Abraham.

  920. The pagans

  921. are more

  922. righteous than

  923. the patriarchs.

  924. They have

  925. a clear

  926. moral compass.

  927. They know

  928. what is good

  929. and wise

  930. more than

  931. Abraham

  932. and Isaac.

  933. Why?

  934. Why does

  935. Abraham,

  936. why does

  937. Isaac do

  938. this?

  939. Well,

  940. he tells

  941. us,

  942. verse 9,

  943. because I

  944. thought,

  945. lest I

  946. die because

  947. of her.

  948. Of course,

  949. we knew that

  950. already,

  951. right?

  952. Verse 6,

  953. he feared

  954. to say,

  955. my wife.

  956. And so,

  957. the point

  958. is this,

  959. Isaac fears

  960. man more

  961. than God.

  962. Isaac trusts

  963. his own

  964. schemes,

  965. he trusts

  966. his own

  967. cleverness

  968. more than

  969. God's promises

  970. and protection.

  971. Isaac has

  972. decided

  973. there's only

  974. one person

  975. who can get

  976. things done

  977. and it's

  978. him.

  979. Families

  980. have their

  981. own stories

  982. and those

  983. stories

  984. are

  985. contagious.

  986. And the

  987. story of

  988. Abraham's

  989. family

  990. is this,

  991. it is

  992. 100%

  993. up to

  994. me

  995. to protect

  996. myself.

  997. if I

  998. don't

  999. make sure

  1000. it gets

  1001. done,

  1002. it won't

  1003. happen.

  1004. The ends

  1005. are going to

  1006. have to

  1007. justify the

  1008. means because

  1009. God

  1010. will not

  1011. show up.

  1012. It's my

  1013. cunning

  1014. and my

  1015. schemes

  1016. that will

  1017. make

  1018. things

  1019. happen.

  1020. That's a

  1021. very different

  1022. story

  1023. story

  1024. than the

  1025. story that

  1026. we're told

  1027. in the

  1028. gospel.

  1029. The story

  1030. of the

  1031. gospel is

  1032. not that

  1033. it is all

  1034. up to

  1035. you and

  1036. your

  1037. cunning

  1038. and your

  1039. schemes

  1040. that you

  1041. have to

  1042. hold the

  1043. world

  1044. together

  1045. by white

  1046. knuckling.

  1047. The story

  1048. of the

  1049. gospel is

  1050. very different.

  1051. It's the

  1052. story of

  1053. Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  1054. chapter 1

  1055. that God

  1056. holds the

  1057. world

  1058. together

  1059. by the

  1060. power

  1061. of his

  1062. word.

  1063. It's the

  1064. story of

  1065. Psalm 23.

  1066. The Lord

  1067. is my

  1068. shepherd

  1069. I shall

  1070. not

  1071. want.

  1072. And for

  1073. Isaac

  1074. in this

  1075. moment

  1076. that

  1077. story

  1078. loses.

  1079. Isaac

  1080. forgets

  1081. or does

  1082. not believe

  1083. what we

  1084. saw last

  1085. week.

  1086. Remember

  1087. the blessing

  1088. is passed

  1089. on.

  1090. What does

  1091. it say?

  1092. Chapter 26

  1093. if you're

  1094. reading with

  1095. your Bible

  1096. look back

  1097. on verse

  1098. 3.

  1099. God

  1100. has made

  1101. Isaac a

  1102. promise.

  1103. He doesn't

  1104. have to

  1105. figure it

  1106. all out

  1107. on his

  1108. own.

  1109. He doesn't

  1110. have to

  1111. scheme

  1112. and connive.

  1113. He doesn't

  1114. have to

  1115. lie

  1116. and

  1117. sulk

  1118. around

  1119. hoping

  1120. that no

  1121. one

  1122. catches

  1123. that him

  1124. and

  1125. Rebecca

  1126. are

  1127. married.

  1128. Now if

  1129. it were

  1130. just a

  1131. promise

  1132. from God

  1133. it would

  1134. be one

  1135. thing

  1136. but it's

  1137. actually

  1138. even worse

  1139. than that.

  1140. It's

  1141. more

  1142. staggering

  1143. because Isaac

  1144. has seen

  1145. with his

  1146. own two

  1147. eyes

  1148. how great

  1149. God is.

  1150. Last

  1151. summer

  1152. chapter 22

  1153. what happens?

  1154. God

  1155. saves

  1156. Isaac

  1157. from being

  1158. sacrificed

  1159. and he

  1160. provides

  1161. a ram.

  1162. If

  1163. anyone

  1164. at this

  1165. point

  1166. in the

  1167. history

  1168. of God's

  1169. people

  1170. has seen

  1171. how great

  1172. and powerful

  1173. God is

  1174. it is

  1175. Isaac.

  1176. And yet

  1177. the story

  1178. of his

  1179. family

  1180. wins.

  1181. Brothers

  1182. and sisters

  1183. even

  1184. more

  1185. than

  1186. Isaac

  1187. we

  1188. have

  1189. seen

  1190. how

  1191. great

  1192. God

  1193. is.

  1194. And

  1195. we've

  1196. seen

  1197. how

  1198. great

  1199. God

  1200. is

  1201. in

  1202. the

  1203. death

  1204. and

  1205. the

  1206. resurrection

  1207. of

  1208. Jesus

  1209. Christ.

  1210. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1211. chapter 8

  1212. what did

  1213. we finish

  1214. with?

  1215. He

  1216. who

  1217. gave

  1218. you

  1219. his

  1220. son

  1221. will

  1222. he

  1223. not

  1224. also

  1225. with

  1226. him

  1227. give

  1228. you

  1229. all

  1230. things?

  1231. How

  1232. could

  1233. we

  1234. doubt?

  1235. How

  1236. could

  1237. we

  1238. believe

  1239. that

  1240. it's

  1241. all

  1242. up

  1243. to

  1244. us

  1245. when

  1246. God

  1247. has

  1248. given

  1249. us

  1250. Christ?

  1251. And

  1252. yet

  1253. we

  1254. do.

  1255. Isaac

  1256. did

  1257. as

  1258. well.

  1259. That's

  1260. our

  1261. hope.

  1262. That's

  1263. the horizon

  1264. line we

  1265. set our

  1266. eyes

  1267. on.

  1268. That

  1269. God

  1270. has

  1271. saved

  1272. his

  1273. people.

  1274. That

  1275. he's

  1276. given

  1277. them

  1278. a

  1279. glorious

  1280. future

  1281. in

  1282. heaven

  1283. with

  1284. him.

  1285. And

  1286. of

  1287. course

  1288. he

  1289. will

  1290. give

  1291. them

  1292. all

  1293. they

  1294. need

  1295. along

  1296. the

  1297. way.

  1298. !

  1299. Now

  1300. some

  1301. of

  1302. what

  1303. I've

  1304. said

  1305. this

  1306. morning

  1307. about

  1308. generational

  1309. sin,

  1310. about

  1311. passing

  1312. things

  1313. from

  1314. father

  1315. to

  1316. son

  1317. and

  1318. mother

  1319. to

  1320. daughter,

  1321. some

  1322. of

  1323. that

  1324. I

  1325. could

  1326. have

  1327. told

  1328. you

  1329. if

  1330. I

  1331. was

  1332. a

  1333. Muslim.

  1334. There's

  1335. a

  1336. certain

  1337. common

  1338. sense

  1339. wisdom

  1340. to

  1341. this.

  1342. Of

  1343. course

  1344. we

  1345. know

  1346. families

  1347. have

  1348. patterns.

  1349. Of

  1350. course

  1351. they're

  1352. powerful.

  1353. What's

  1354. different

  1355. about

  1356. the

  1357. gospel,

  1358. what's

  1359. different

  1360. about

  1361. the

  1362. story

  1363. that

  1364. the

  1365. Bible

  1366. tells

  1367. us

  1368. is

  1369. this,

  1370. that

  1371. in

  1372. the

  1373. midst

  1374. of

  1375. the

  1376. mess

  1377. that

  1378. we

  1379. have

  1380. made

  1381. in

  1382. and

  1383. with

  1384. and

  1385. through

  1386. our

  1387. families,

  1388. God

  1389. intervenes.

  1390. The

  1391. family

  1392. is

  1393. powerful.

  1394. Hopefully

  1395. I made

  1396. that point

  1397. in the

  1398. first half

  1399. of the

  1400. sermon.

  1401. It

  1402. has

  1403. incredible

  1404. power.

  1405. God's

  1406. grace

  1407. and his

  1408. commitment

  1409. to his

  1410. covenant

  1411. and his

  1412. steadfast

  1413. love

  1414. are much

  1415. more

  1416. powerful.

  1417. The

  1418. story

  1419. of Abraham

  1420. and Isaac

  1421. and their

  1422. generational

  1423. sin

  1424. does

  1425. not

  1426. have

  1427. the

  1428. last

  1429. word.

  1430. Christian,

  1431. no

  1432. matter

  1433. how

  1434. messed

  1435. up

  1436. your

  1437. family

  1438. is

  1439. and

  1440. it

  1441. is

  1442. because

  1443. you

  1444. live

  1445. east

  1446. of

  1447. Eden,

  1448. God

  1449. is

  1450. more

  1451. powerful.

  1452. Jeremiah

  1453. 23,

  1454. God's

  1455. word

  1456. is a

  1457. rock,

  1458. excuse

  1459. me,

  1460. a hammer

  1461. that breaks

  1462. a rock

  1463. into

  1464. pieces.

  1465. What do

  1466. I always

  1467. say?

  1468. It means

  1469. there's

  1470. nothing

  1471. so

  1472. powerful

  1473. that

  1474. God's

  1475. word

  1476. is

  1477. not

  1478. more

  1479. powerful

  1480. still.

  1481. There

  1482. is

  1483. nothing

  1484. that

  1485. has

  1486. happened

  1487. in

  1488. your

  1489. family

  1490. or

  1491. that

  1492. you

  1493. have

  1494. given

  1495. to

  1496. your

  1497. children

  1498. that

  1499. God

  1500. is

  1501. not

  1502. more

  1503. powerful

  1504. still.

  1505. Genesis

  1506. is a

  1507. story

  1508. about

  1509. a

  1510. wildly

  1511. dysfunctional

  1512. family

  1513. and this

  1514. is just

  1515. the start.

  1516. Okay,

  1517. buckle in.

  1518. It's

  1519. going to

  1520. get worse

  1521. in coming

  1522. weeks.

  1523. And

  1524. God

  1525. works

  1526. his

  1527. covenant

  1528. promises

  1529. through

  1530. them.

  1531. All

  1532. these

  1533. people

  1534. show up

  1535. in the

  1536. genealogy

  1537. of

  1538. Jesus.

  1539. God's

  1540. grace

  1541. is

  1542. more

  1543. powerful.

  1544. God's

  1545. grace

  1546. has

  1547. the

  1548. last

  1549. word.

  1550. Family

  1551. is a

  1552. painful

  1553. topic.

  1554. If

  1555. you're

  1556. paying

  1557. attention

  1558. this

  1559. morning,

  1560. my guess

  1561. is it

  1562. stirred

  1563. things

  1564. up

  1565. in

  1566. you.

  1567. Whatever

  1568. it stirred

  1569. up in

  1570. you,

  1571. that's

  1572. not

  1573. the

  1574. end

  1575. of

  1576. the

  1577. story.

  1578. It's

  1579. not

  1580. too

  1581. late

  1582. for

  1583. something

  1584. new.

  1585. And

  1586. that's

  1587. not

  1588. because

  1589. of

  1590. some

  1591. therapeutic

  1592. healing

  1593. journey

  1594. that

  1595. you're

  1596. going

  1597. to

  1598. go

  1599. on

  1600. through

  1601. another

  1602. country.

  1603. No,

  1604. it's

  1605. not

  1606. too

  1607. late

  1608. for

  1609. something

  1610. new

  1611. because

  1612. of

  1613. the

  1614. steadfast

  1615. love

  1616. of

  1617. the

  1618. Lord.

  1619. God

  1620. is

  1621. more

  1622. powerful.

  1623. Isaac's

  1624. sin

  1625. doesn't

  1626. have

  1627. the

  1628. last

  1629. word.

  1630. God's

  1631. covenant

  1632. does.

  1633. Next

  1634. week,

  1635. I should

  1636. have

  1637. included

  1638. next

  1639. week's

  1640. verses

  1641. in this

  1642. week's

  1643. reading.

  1644. Next

  1645. week,

  1646. it starts

  1647. out,

  1648. our passage,

  1649. it starts

  1650. like this.

  1651. This is

  1652. verses

  1653. 12 and

  1654. 13.

  1655. And Isaac

  1656. sowed in

  1657. that land

  1658. and reaped

  1659. in the

  1660. same

  1661. year

  1662. a hundred

  1663. fold.

  1664. the

  1665. Lord

  1666. blessed

  1667. him.

  1668. In

  1669. the

  1670. midst

  1671. of

  1672. Isaac's

  1673. stupidity,

  1674. in the

  1675. midst

  1676. of

  1677. his

  1678. fear,

  1679. in the

  1680. midst

  1681. of

  1682. his

  1683. sin,

  1684. God

  1685. is

  1686. still

  1687. at

  1688. work.

  1689. Praise

  1690. the

  1691. Lord,

  1692. his

  1693. mercy

  1694. is

  1695. more.

  1696. Stronger

  1697. than

  1698. darkness,

  1699. new

  1700. every

  1701. morn,

  1702. our

  1703. sins

  1704. they

  1705. are

  1706. many,

  1707. his

  1708. mercy

  1709. is

  1710. more.

  1711. Let's

  1712. pray.

  1713. Our

  1714. Father in

  1715. heaven,

  1716. we do

  1717. praise you

  1718. and thank

  1719. you again

  1720. for your

  1721. word.

  1722. Thank you

  1723. that you

  1724. present

  1725. us

  1726. in the

  1727. Bible,

  1728. not with

  1729. stories of

  1730. people who

  1731. are scrubbed

  1732. and polished,

  1733. but with

  1734. people who

  1735. are messy

  1736. and dysfunctional,

  1737. just like

  1738. us.

  1739. You show

  1740. us in

  1741. the midst

  1742. of that

  1743. your

  1744. great

  1745. grace

  1746. and

  1747. mercy,

  1748. which

  1749. gets

  1750. the

  1751. last

  1752. word.

  1753. We

  1754. ask

  1755. that you

  1756. would

  1757. remind

  1758. us

  1759. of

  1760. that,

  1761. that it

  1762. would

  1763. become

  1764. our

  1765. great

  1766. hope

  1767. and our

  1768. confidence.

  1769. We ask

  1770. these things

  1771. in Jesus

  1772. name,

  1773. amen.

  1774. Amen.
