  1. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you this morning.

  2. We're continuing our series in the book of Genesis.

  3. You'll remember that the book of Genesis is the origin story of God's people, Israel.

  4. And this summer we're looking at the story of Isaac and Jacob.

  5. It's actually going to mostly be Jacob from chapters 25 through 36.

  6. And to a certain extent, as I've said, we're asking the same question of the Abraham story that we asked last summer, which is what does it look like to follow God in faith?

  7. And yet as this story develops, progresses, unfolds, some new themes get particular emphasis.

  8. So two weeks ago we were in verses 1 through 5 and Isaac is taking on the mantle of Abraham.

  9. We see God's faithfulness to his covenant generation to generation.

  10. That's two weeks ago.

  11. Last week, verses 6 through 11, Isaac then, it's not taking on the mantle of Abraham, he actually repeats the sins of Abraham.

  12. And so we saw God's work in and through dysfunctional families.

  13. By the way, we'll see that again.

  14. That's a theme throughout the book of Genesis.

  15. This week we're in verses 12 through 33 where Isaac experiences the blessing of Abraham.

  16. The blessing that God reiterated two weeks ago.

  17. God's faithfulness to his promises.

  18. God's favor on his people.

  19. And so it's at that I invite you to turn with me now to Genesis chapter 26.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  20. We'll be starting at verse 12.

  21. And as we turn to this, remember that this is God's word.

  22. Jeremiah chapter 23 tells us that God's word is a hammer that breaks a rock into pieces.

    Jeremiah 23 chapter mention

  23. Which is a way of saying that there is nothing so powerful that God's word is not more powerful still.

  24. And so that's why we read now Genesis chapter 26 starting at verse 12.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  25. And Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold.

  26. The Lord blessed him and the man became rich and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.

  27. He had possessions of flocks and herds and many servants so that the Philistines envied him.

  28. Now the Philistines had stopped and filled with earth all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father.

  29. And Abimelech said to Isaac,

  30. Go away from us for you are much mightier than we.

  31. Verse 17.

  32. So Isaac departed from there and encamped in the valley of Gerar and settled there.

  33. And Isaac dug again the wells of water that had been dug in the days of Abraham his father,

  34. which the Philistines had stopped after the death of Abraham.

  35. And he gave them the names that his father had given them.

  36. But when Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found there a well of spring water,

  37. the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen, saying,

  38. The water is ours.

  39. So he called the name of the well Essek, because they contended with him.

  40. Then they dug another well, and they quarreled over that also.

  41. So he called its name Sidna.

  42. And he moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it.

  43. So he called its name Rehoboth, saying,

  44. For now the Lord has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.

  45. Verse 23.

  46. From there he went up to Beersheba.

  47. And the Lord appeared to him the same night and said,

  48. I am the God of Abraham, your father.

  49. Fear not, for I am with you and will bless you and multiply your offspring for my servant Abraham's sake.

  50. So he built an altar there and called upon the name of the Lord and pitched his tent there.

  51. And there Isaac's servants dug a well.

  52. Verse 26.

  53. When Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzath his advisor and Phicol the commander of his army,

  54. Isaac said to them,

  55. Why have you come to me, seeing that you hate me and have sent me away from you?

  56. They said,

  57. We see plainly that the Lord has been with you.

  58. So we said,

  59. Let there be a sworn pact between us, between you and us, and let us make a covenant with you,

  60. that you will do us no harm, just as we have not touched you,

  61. and have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.

  62. You are now the blessed of the Lord.

  63. Verse 30.

  64. So he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

  65. In the morning they rose early and exchanged oaths.

  66. And Isaac sent them on their way, and they departed from him in peace.

  67. That same day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well that they had dug and said to him,

  68. We have found water.

  69. He called it Sheba.

  70. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

  71. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  72. Our Father in heaven, we thank you again this morning that you've called us together as your people.

  73. That we're here to worship you in spirit and in truth.

  74. And we thank you that you're a promise-keeping God.

  75. That you make promises and you honor them.

  76. We ask that you would honor your promise in Isaiah 55.

  77. That your word does not return to you void, but it accomplishes your purposes.

  78. So we ask that you would use your word this morning to accomplish great things in our lives.

  79. That you would help us to see Jesus.

  80. You'd grow our love for him, our faith in him, our obedience to him.

  81. We ask these things in his mighty name.

  82. Amen.

  83. Last year during my sabbatical I went back to the east coast for a little bit.

  84. And I went camping for a few nights in North Carolina with one of my best friends.

  85. And I have been in Colorado long enough now.

  86. Actually nine years today.

  87. I'm still an east coast boy, but I've been in here long enough that when I go back to the east coast

  88. I have a little bit of culture shock.

  89. Especially when I go camping.

  90. Because most of the time, if you're on the east coast and you're out camping,

  91. you can just make a fire.

  92. Anywhere, everywhere, no one cares.

  93. Okay, most of the time.

  94. We don't have fire bans all the time.

  95. You're not constantly seeing these ratings.

  96. Like, what's the wildfire chance at this point?

  97. Of course we know, and so we do this.

  98. We make fires when you're camping without a second thought.

  99. And as a nine-year Coloradan, I think, ooh, this feels really dangerous.

  100. You can just start fires.

  101. Wow, okay.

  102. Fires are a different ballgame in this state.

  103. And that's for a number of reasons.

  104. One of the reasons is water.

  105. We're a semi-arid climate.

  106. There's not as much water out here.

  107. You may not know this.

  108. There's actually something called the Colorado Water Courts.

  109. And they are courts that do only water and water rights.

  110. We are the only state in the United States that has courts just focused on water.

  111. Which highlights for you how important it is, right?

  112. We could go on.

  113. Artificial intelligence is controversial.

  114. And it's controversial because of data centers.

  115. And data centers are controversial because they require water.

  116. Certain parts of the world, water is a huge deal.

  117. Including the ancient Near East.

  118. So remember where we are in the larger story of Abraham.

  119. We're in chapter 26 right now.

  120. We've moved on to Isaac.

  121. And the story started this chapter, verse 1.

  122. We find out there's a famine.

  123. And why would there be a famine?

  124. Most likely because there is not enough water.

  125. And where do you go when there's a drought?

  126. Of course you go to Egypt.

  127. Egypt has the Nile River.

  128. They have plenty of water.

  129. Surprise!

  130. Verse 2.

  131. God comes to Isaac and says,

  132. Don't go to Egypt.

  133. Do what's counterintuitive.

  134. Stay where you are.

  135. Go against all human wisdom.

  136. And so we talked about this two weeks ago.

  137. There's this tremendous act of faith from Abraham to stay away from Egypt.

  138. He has to trust God's promises.

  139. And so God repeats that promise.

  140. Verse 3.

  141. Sojourn in this land and I will be with you and I will bless you.

  142. And then in verses 3 through 5, he repeats the blessing, the promises made to Abraham of land and offspring and blessing to the nations.

  143. Okay, this is all review from two weeks ago just so we understand where we're headed.

  144. And I told you the point was this, that obedience to God's commands is enabled by belief in his promises.

  145. That faith and promise always go together.

  146. And then I reminded you Jesus has also made us a promise.

  147. Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  148. But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you.

  149. Okay.

  150. Okay.

  151. But will all these things actually be added to you?

  152. It is nice to read Jesus' words from Matthew chapter 6 out loud.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  153. But what happens in the long term?

  154. It's great to hear God reiterate his promise to Abraham at the very beginning of chapter 26.

  155. What's going to happen in the long run?

  156. And this passage is basically the answer to that question.

  157. Abraham makes a leap of faith, the beginning of chapter 26, and now we get to see at the end what happens.

  158. And it's going to remind us of exactly what we saw last summer with Abraham.

  159. In the long run, in the final analysis, God keeps his word.

  160. He does exactly what he says he will do.

  161. So we're going to look at two things.

  162. We're going to look, and this is on page 8 of your worship guides.

  163. You don't even have to write it down.

  164. We're going to look at blessing from God and blessing before the Philistines.

  165. Blessing from God.

  166. Blessing before the Philistines.

  167. And so first, blessings from God.

  168. This is verses 12 through 13.

  169. The first thing we find out in verse 12 is that there is an agricultural blessing.

  170. Isaac sowed and reaped in the same year a hundredfold.

  171. Wait, wasn't there a famine?

  172. Wasn't there not enough water?

  173. What happens in a famine?

  174. Famine is when you don't have enough food.

  175. And yet here Abraham is, reaped in the same year a hundredfold.

  176. So Abraham, he's not just provided for.

  177. He actually has more than he needs.

  178. And it's not just an agricultural blessing.

  179. We go on to find out verse 13.

  180. It is a general blessing.

  181. And the man became rich and gained more and more until he became very wealthy.

  182. What did God say back in verse 3?

  183. Sojourn in this land and I will be with you and I will bless you.

  184. And what do you know?

  185. God has been with him.

  186. God has blessed him.

  187. God's kept his promise.

  188. Verse 13 tells us how abundant this is.

  189. It's not just that he became rich also.

  190. So we don't miss the point.

  191. It is more and more.

  192. Not just wealthy.

  193. Very wealthy.

  194. What did we read this morning from the New Testament?

  195. Ephesians chapter 3.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  196. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all we ask or think.

  197. According to the power that is at work within us.

  198. God kept his promise.

  199. He kept it more than Isaac could have imagined.

  200. That's blessing from God.

  201. All this blessing though actually creates some problems.

  202. Which goes along with that old phrase, right?

  203. Be careful what you wish for.

  204. There is strife and conflict with the Philistines immediately.

  205. Verse 14.

  206. These flocks and herds and servants are more than the Philistines can manage.

  207. And so we find out, this is the end of verse 14.

  208. The Philistines envied him.

  209. They see God blessing Isaac.

  210. They see more and more his wealth increasing.

  211. And their eyes turn green.

  212. So verse 16.

  213. They kick him out.

  214. They say, Isaac, this town ain't big enough for the two of us.

  215. And it's not just their envy.

  216. Also verse 16.

  217. We find out they see him as a threat.

  218. You are much mightier.

  219. So we're jealous of you.

  220. God has given you things we wish he'd given us.

  221. We feel threatened by you.

  222. You're so powerful.

  223. And by the way, this is under the surface.

  224. It doesn't say this explicitly.

  225. But what do you need to have crops that are a hundredfold?

  226. You need a lot of water.

  227. And so Isaac is putting demand on the infrastructure.

  228. It is time for Isaac to get out of town.

  229. And of course, this is not an easy thing for him.

  230. He's come to Gerar because of the famine.

  231. So getting kicked out means, hey, I've got to start this search,

  232. this need for water all over again.

  233. And to make matters worse, notice what happened in verse 15.

  234. They had already filled Abraham's wells with dirt.

  235. So we're kicking you out.

  236. You're too much of a stretch on our infrastructure.

  237. We're envious of you.

  238. We feel threatened by you.

  239. And by the way, all your father's wells, yeah, we filled those up.

  240. So good luck out there.

  241. Now, some commentators say the Philistines filled up all the wells

  242. because they just wanted to get at Isaac.

  243. They were spiteful because it takes work, right?

  244. You actually have to go out there and put dirt in the wells.

  245. Some people say they weren't spiteful at Isaac.

  246. Actually, they just wanted to discourage anyone from being close to them.

  247. So they want to make it hard to get water.

  248. Whatever the reason, if you think all the way back to the Abraham story,

  249. Genesis chapter 21, Abraham had made a covenant with Abimelech.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  250. Look, these wells were supposed to be protected.

  251. They're supposed to be Abraham and his offspring's wells from generation to generation.

  252. And whatever the reason, Abraham's got to figure out,

  253. okay, my wells are filled up.

  254. How am I going to get any water?

  255. And so the same question with this crisis comes to the surface.

  256. God's told him to go to Gerar, told him to stay there, not to go to Egypt.

  257. What will God provide?

  258. Is he going to give Isaac what he needs to survive in the desert?

  259. That takes us to verses 17 through 22, where there's this conflict over wells.

  260. So Isaac goes, he digs up his dad's wells,

  261. and we're told he gives them the exact same names that Abraham gave the wells,

  262. which reminds us once again that Isaac has taken on the mantle of Abraham.

  263. It's also kind of a little dig at the men of Gerar saying,

  264. hey, I'm making these what my father named them,

  265. because you remember they're actually his wells.

  266. And we actually made a treaty back in Genesis 21.

  267. You weren't really supposed to mess with them.

  268. Then in verses 19 through 21, he digs three new wells.

  269. And the first two wells, the herdsmen of Gerar want to fight over it.

  270. Isaac, we're going to see this next week, a little bit passive.

  271. He decides he's not going to make a battle over it,

  272. so they fight over one well.

  273. He says, okay, fine, you can have it.

  274. We're going to move to the second well.

  275. They want to fight over that.

  276. Okay, fine, you can have it.

  277. Third well, no fight.

  278. And Isaac looks at that, and he says, oh, okay.

  279. God's provided.

  280. God's honored his promise.

  281. I've been kicked out.

  282. I've had fights over wells.

  283. Verse 22, for now the Lord has made room for us,

  284. and we shall be fruitful in the land.

  285. So the way Isaac interprets it is this.

  286. Hey, this last well, the fact that there's no conflict over it,

  287. just tells us, hey, God continues to provide.

  288. He's given room for us.

  289. It relates to his promise of land.

  290. Remember, he told Isaac back in verse 3,

  291. and now he's about to tell him again,

  292. the land for you and your offspring.

  293. Takes us to verse 23.

  294. Abraham, or Isaac, excuse me, goes from Rehoboth to Beersheba,

  295. and there is what we call a theophany,

  296. which is appearance of God.

  297. So God shows up again,

  298. just like he did at the beginning of the chapter,

  299. and repeats the promises made in verse 3.

  300. This is verses 23 through 24.

  301. The Lord appeared to him the same night and said,

  302. I am the God of Abraham, your father.

  303. Fear not, for I am with you

  304. and will bless you and multiply your offspring

  305. for my servant Abraham's sake.

  306. In other words, God shows up and says,

  307. Isaac, do you believe me now?

  308. Do you trust me now?

  309. I told you in verse 3,

  310. I was going to be with you

  311. and I was going to bless you.

  312. You see how I've done that?

  313. And now I'm coming to remind you again,

  314. I'm going to be with you

  315. and I'm going to bless you.

  316. So Abraham, Isaac,

  317. I'm sorry guys,

  318. I keep saying Abraham,

  319. I'm so used to that from the previous time.

  320. Isaac, verse 25,

  321. doubles down,

  322. he's committed to the place, right?

  323. He builds an altar.

  324. God

  325. also comes to us

  326. over and over

  327. to remind us of his promises.

  328. Now he doesn't do it

  329. in the way that he did it for Isaac.

  330. You're not going to have a theophany,

  331. I don't think.

  332. You're not going to have

  333. a special appearance of God before you.

  334. You're actually not one of the patriarchs.

  335. But God does continue to remind us

  336. of his promises to us.

  337. And he does it in at least two ways.

  338. He does it in his word

  339. and he does it in our worship together.

  340. Some people talk about Sunday morning worship

  341. as our meeting place with God.

  342. And that's not to say

  343. you don't meet with God,

  344. in other ways.

  345. But there's a special sense

  346. in which we come together

  347. on Sunday morning

  348. to meet with God

  349. and be reminded

  350. every week

  351. of the promises he's made to us.

  352. There's a sense

  353. when we open God's word

  354. day by day,

  355. we are doing it

  356. to be reminded

  357. of what he said

  358. he would do.

  359. And there's another piece

  360. to this as well.

  361. It's not just that

  362. that you are reminded

  363. in worship

  364. and in God's word.

  365. We also remind

  366. one another.

  367. Part of your job

  368. as a Christian

  369. in a church

  370. is to remind

  371. your brothers and sisters

  372. of what God

  373. has said

  374. he will do.

  375. That we need

  376. to be reminded

  377. of God's promises

  378. again

  379. and again

  380. over

  381. and over.

  382. God said

  383. he would provide

  384. verse 3.

  385. He goes on

  386. to provide

  387. more than Isaac

  388. could have expected

  389. and God

  390. shows up again

  391. and says,

  392. look,

  393. I did what I said

  394. I was going to do.

  395. Here's my promise

  396. again.

  397. The author of Hebrews

  398. in chapter 3

  399. tells us

  400. that this is what

  401. we're supposed

  402. to be doing.

  403. Take care,

  404. brothers,

  405. lest there be

  406. in any of you

  407. an evil,

  408. unbelieving heart

  409. leading you

  410. to fall away

  411. from the living God.

  412. But exhort

  413. one another

  414. every day

  415. as long as

  416. it is called

  417. today

  418. that none

  419. of you

  420. may be hardened

  421. by the deceitfulness

  422. of sin.

  423. For we have come

  424. to share

  425. in Christ

  426. if indeed

  427. we hold

  428. our original

  429. confidence

  430. firm

  431. to the end.

  432. Cheyenne

  433. Mountain,

  434. Presbyterian Church.

  435. Remind

  436. one another

  437. of God's

  438. promises

  439. as long

  440. as it is

  441. called

  442. today.

  443. Even though

  444. they've kicked

  445. him out

  446. the blessing

  447. on Isaac

  448. is so

  449. intense

  450. even as

  451. he's wandering

  452. around

  453. uncovering

  454. his father's

  455. wells

  456. that the

  457. Philistines

  458. have no

  459. choice

  460. but to

  461. come

  462. and sue

  463. for peace.

  464. This is

  465. verses 26

  466. through 31.

  467. They kicked

  468. him out

  469. of the city.

  470. They filled

  471. his wells

  472. and yet

  473. somehow

  474. mysteriously

  475. Isaac keeps

  476. getting

  477. stronger

  478. and stronger.

  479. Remember

  480. we talked

  481. about this

  482. a couple

  483. weeks ago

  484. this idea

  485. of being

  486. anti-fragile.

  487. whatever

  488. they throw

  489. at Isaac

  490. somehow

  491. he just

  492. keeps on

  493. winning.

  494. Just ends

  495. up on top.

  496. We're going

  497. to see the

  498. same thing

  499. by the way

  500. with Jacob

  501. and Laban.

  502. They come

  503. to make a

  504. treaty with

  505. him.

  506. This is

  507. verse 26

  508. and he

  509. says

  510. why have

  511. you come

  512. to see

  513. me

  514. seeing

  515. that you

  516. hate me

  517. and have

  518. sent me

  519. away from

  520. you?

  521. And he

  522. doesn't

  523. mention

  524. and you

  525. took my

  526. father's

  527. wells

  528. and you

  529. tried to

  530. destroy

  531. them.

  532. And they

  533. tell him

  534. point blank

  535. verse 28

  536. we see

  537. plainly

  538. that the

  539. Lord

  540. has been

  541. with you.

  542. We did

  543. everything we

  544. could to

  545. cut your

  546. legs out

  547. from under

  548. you.

  549. And from

  550. some reason

  551. you just

  552. keep going

  553. from strength

  554. to strength.

  555. Verse 29

  556. you are

  557. now

  558. blessed

  559. of the

  560. Lord.

  561. The point

  562. is this

  563. it is a

  564. fool's

  565. errand

  566. to oppose

  567. God's

  568. people.

  569. It's a

  570. fool's

  571. errand

  572. because it's

  573. not a

  574. fair fight.

  575. What they

  576. have is

  577. greater than

  578. the sum

  579. of its

  580. parts.

  581. Church

  582. what we

  583. have is

  584. greater than

  585. the sum

  586. of its

  587. parts

  588. because God

  589. is fighting

  590. for us.

  591. it's a

  592. fool's

  593. errand

  594. to oppose

  595. God's

  596. people.

  597. Christian

  598. God

  599. is fighting

  600. for you

  601. and he

  602. protects

  603. his people

  604. when they

  605. obey

  606. him

  607. in ways

  608. that are

  609. risky

  610. and

  611. counterintuitive.

  612. Isaac

  613. has done

  614. what God

  615. told him

  616. to do.

  617. He stayed

  618. in Gerar.

  619. He did

  620. not go

  621. to Egypt.

  622. He

  623. violated

  624. every rule

  625. of human

  626. wisdom

  627. and God

  628. has blessed

  629. him.

  630. Remember

  631. what it

  632. said there.

  633. This is

  634. verse 13.

  635. God

  636. has blessed

  637. him more

  638. and more

  639. until he

  640. became very

  641. wealthy.

  642. God

  643. protects

  644. his people.

  645. God

  646. provides

  647. for his

  648. people

  649. when they

  650. take the

  651. risk

  652. of

  653. obedience.

  654. I don't

  655. know every

  656. risk that

  657. you've taken

  658. in faith

  659. to follow

  660. after God.

  661. I don't

  662. know every

  663. risk you've

  664. taken trusting

  665. that God

  666. will provide

  667. for you.

  668. I don't

  669. know every

  670. way that

  671. you have

  672. suffered

  673. choosing

  674. obedience.

  675. Maybe it's a

  676. relational risk.

  677. Maybe you

  678. have lost

  679. friends.

  680. Maybe you're

  681. scared of losing

  682. friends for doing

  683. and saying the

  684. right thing.

  685. maybe it's

  686. led you into

  687. conflict.

  688. Jesus has

  689. made us

  690. promises as

  691. well.

  692. This is

  693. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  694. chapter 5.

  695. Blessed are

  696. those who

  697. hunger and

  698. thirst for

  699. righteousness for

  700. they shall be

  701. satisfied.

  702. Blessed are

  703. those who

  704. are persecuted

  705. for righteousness

  706. sake for

  707. theirs is

  708. the kingdom

  709. of heaven.

  710. It's a

  711. fool's

  712. errand to

  713. oppose

  714. God's

  715. people.

  716. Notice how

  717. it all comes

  718. together in

  719. this passage.

  720. Verses 6

  721. and 7,

  722. if you think

  723. back,

  724. Isaac was

  725. very afraid

  726. of the

  727. Philistines.

  728. He was so

  729. afraid that

  730. he lied

  731. about his

  732. wife,

  733. Rebecca.

  734. Okay,

  735. that's the

  736. beginning of

  737. the chapter.

  738. What happens

  739. at the end?

  740. He's not

  741. afraid of

  742. them.

  743. Philistines

  744. are afraid

  745. of him.

  746. The roles

  747. have been

  748. reversed.

  749. Verse 1,

  750. how did we

  751. start out?

  752. We started

  753. out with a

  754. famine.

  755. How does it

  756. end?

  757. Verse 12,

  758. Isaac has

  759. crops a

  760. hundred

  761. fold.

  762. And then the

  763. cherry on top,

  764. the very end.

  765. Verse 32,

  766. that same

  767. day,

  768. Isaac's

  769. servants

  770. came and

  771. told him

  772. about the

  773. well that

  774. they had

  775. dug and

  776. said to

  777. him,

  778. we have

  779. found

  780. water.

  781. Now

  782. there's a

  783. great well,

  784. just one

  785. more blessing

  786. from the

  787. Lord.

  788. So God's

  789. telling him,

  790. hey, I'm

  791. not just

  792. going to

  793. provide for

  794. you.

  795. I'm going

  796. to super

  797. provide for

  798. you.

  799. I didn't

  800. just give

  801. you that

  802. one well

  803. that no

  804. one would

  805. fight over.

  806. No, I'm

  807. going to

  808. give you

  809. this well

  810. too.

  811. You're

  812. afraid that

  813. staying away

  814. from Egypt

  815. was the

  816. wrong move.

  817. Wait and

  818. watch what

  819. I do.

  820. I don't

  821. know every

  822. risk that

  823. you've

  824. taken to

  825. follow God

  826. in faith

  827. and obedience.

  828. Maybe it's

  829. a material

  830. risk.

  831. Maybe it's

  832. been making

  833. less and

  834. giving more.

  835. Gerar was

  836. in fact

  837. less than

  838. Egypt.

  839. Maybe it's

  840. a circumstantial

  841. risk.

  842. Maybe it's

  843. living somewhere

  844. you don't

  845. want to

  846. live.

  847. Abraham,

  848. we're told,

  849. very beginning

  850. is a sojourner

  851. in Gerar.

  852. He's vulnerable.

  853. He's vulnerable

  854. socially,

  855. he's vulnerable

  856. politically.

  857. God made

  858. Abraham a

  859. promise.

  860. Made him

  861. a promise

  862. of his

  863. presence.

  864. He made

  865. him a

  866. promise

  867. of his

  868. blessing.

  869. He honored

  870. it.

  871. God's

  872. made us

  873. promises

  874. as well.

  875. Jesus has

  876. promised us

  877. Matthew

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  878. chapter 19.

  879. And everyone

  880. who has left

  881. houses or

  882. brothers or

  883. sisters or

  884. father or

  885. mother or

  886. children or

  887. lands for

  888. my name's

  889. sake will

  890. receive a

  891. hundredfold

  892. and will

  893. inherit

  894. eternal

  895. life.

  896. Does that

  897. word a

  898. hundredfold

  899. sound familiar?

  900. Verse 12,

  901. Isaac sowed in

  902. that land and

  903. reaped in the

  904. same year a

  905. hundredfold.

  906. world.

  907. I heard an

  908. illustration many

  909. years ago that

  910. I've never

  911. forgotten.

  912. It says that

  913. evil is like a

  914. vicious dog

  915. snarling and

  916. barking.

  917. But that dog is

  918. on a chain.

  919. It's on a chain

  920. limited,

  921. restrained,

  922. because God

  923. is at work.

  924. And if you

  925. don't know

  926. where to turn

  927. or what to

  928. say or what

  929. to do,

  930. if you feel

  931. lost,

  932. wherever you

  933. are trying to

  934. follow God

  935. in faith,

  936. unsure of

  937. where your

  938. journey ends

  939. and how it

  940. goes,

  941. if you don't

  942. know where to

  943. turn, I want

  944. you to do

  945. this.

  946. Take Psalm

    Psalms 27:13

  947. 27,

  948. verses 13

  949. and 14,

  950. and make

  951. those verses

  952. your verses.

  953. This is really

  954. what Genesis

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  955. chapter 26 is

  956. telling us.

  957. I believe that

  958. I shall look

  959. upon the

  960. goodness of

  961. the Lord in

  962. the land of

  963. the living.

  964. I believe God's

  965. going to keep

  966. his promises.

  967. Wait for the

  968. Lord, be strong

  969. and let your

  970. heart take

  971. courage.

  972. Wait for

  973. the Lord.

  974. In the end,

  975. God always

  976. provides.

  977. Follow him,

  978. he will take

  979. care of the

  980. rest.

  981. For I know

  982. that he is

  983. working for

  984. his glory and

  985. my good.

  986. Let's pray.

  987. Our Father in

  988. heaven, we thank

  989. you that you're

  990. a promise-keeping

  991. God.

  992. That no matter

  993. where we're at

  994. in the story,

  995. we know how it

  996. ends.

  997. It ends with you

  998. protecting and

  999. providing for us

  1000. as we follow you

  1001. in faith.

  1002. faith.

  1003. We ask that you

  1004. would remind us

  1005. of that this

  1006. morning and it

  1007. would sustain us

  1008. as we continue to

  1009. follow after you.

  1010. We ask these

  1011. things in Jesus'

  1012. name.

  1013. Amen.

  1014. I invite you to

  1015. stand for our hymn.

  1016. Amen.

  1017. Amen.

  1018. Amen.
