  1. And I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you this morning.

  3. And we're continuing today in our series on Genesis,

  4. which tells the origin story of God's people, Israel.

  5. This summer we are in the story of Isaac and Jacob,

  6. mostly Jacob, which shows up in chapters 25 through 36.

  7. And to a certain extent, it is the same theme as the Abraham story last summer.

  8. We are continuing to ask, what does it look like to follow God in faith?

  9. But the story of Isaac and Jacob adds some more layers, some new themes that are introduced.

  10. So if you were here with us two weeks ago, you'll remember that Isaac repeats the sins of Abraham.

  11. And so we talked about God's work in and through dysfunctional families.

  12. Now, I warned you at that time, this was going to be a repeated theme that showed up again

  13. and guess what?

  14. This week we return to the same topic, God's work in and through dysfunctional families.

  15. God's faithfulness to sinful, rebellious people, people who trust themselves rather than God.

  16. Now, as we come to this story, I will share with you, this is one of the major stories in all of Scripture.

  17. It is 42 verses that we're going to read this morning, but it is in fact only one sermon.

  18. So as I tell you from time to time, I will say something, not everything.

  19. Also, in light of the fact that it is 42 verses, sometimes if we're honest, it can be hard to stay focused

  20. and keep on track as we read a long passage together.

  21. So if that's you, I have a job for you to help you stay awake.

  22. I want you to count as we read together how many times the phrase delicious food shows up in this passage.

  23. Okay?

  24. So mark delicious food is what you're looking for.

  25. Mark it, write the number at the bottom.

  26. We can hand them out.

  27. We'll grade each other's papers at the end of class.

  28. We are in Genesis chapter 26, starting at verse 34, which you will find on pages 7 through 9 of your worship guide.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  29. As we turn there, remember that this is God's word.

  30. And Isaiah chapter 40 tells us that the grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  31. And so that's why we read now Genesis chapter 26, starting at verse 34.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  32. When Esau was 40 years old, he took Judith, the daughter of Beri the Hittite, to be his wife,

  33. and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and they made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah.

  34. Chapter 27.

  35. When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see, he called Esau, his older son, and said to him,

  36. My son.

  37. And he answered, Here I am.

  38. He said, Behold, I am old.

  39. I do not know the day of my death.

  40. Now then, take your weapons, your quiver, and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me,

  41. and prepare for me delicious food, such as I love, and bring it to me so that I may eat,

  42. that my soul may bless you before I die.

  43. Verse 5.

  44. Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to his son Esau.

  45. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game and bring it, Rebekah said to her son Jacob,

  46. I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, bring me game and prepare for me delicious food,

  47. that I may eat it and bless you before the Lord before I die.

  48. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice as I command you.

  49. Go to the flock and bring me two good young goats, so that I may prepare from them delicious food,

  50. for your father, such as he loves.

  51. And you shall bring it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies.

  52. But Jacob said to Rebekah his mother,

  53. Behold, my brother Esau is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.

  54. Perhaps my father will feel me, and I shall seem to be mocking him,

  55. and bring a curse upon myself, and not a blessing.

  56. His mother said to him,

  57. Let your curse be on me, my son.

  58. Only obey my voice, and go, bring them to me.

  59. Verse 14,

  60. So he went and took them, and brought them to his mother,

  61. and his mother prepared delicious food, such as his father loved.

  62. Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her older son,

  63. which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son.

  64. And the skins of the young goats she put on his hands,

  65. and on the smooth part of his neck.

  66. And she put the delicious food and the bread,

  67. which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

  68. Verse 18.

  69. Excuse me.

  70. So he went into his father and said,

  71. My father.

  72. And he said, Here I am.

  73. Who are you, my son?

  74. Jacob said to his father,

  75. I am Esau, your firstborn.

  76. I have done as you told me.

  77. Now sit up and eat of my game,

  78. that your soul may bless you.

  79. But Isaac said to his son,

  80. How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?

  81. He answered,

  82. Because the Lord your God granted me success.

  83. Then Isaac said to Jacob,

  84. Please come near that I may feel you, my son,

  85. to know whether you are really my son Esau or not.

  86. So Jacob went near to Isaac, his father, who felt him, and said,

  87. The voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.

  88. And he did not recognize him,

  89. because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's hands.

  90. So he blessed him.

  91. He said, Are you really my son Esau?

  92. He answered, I am.

  93. Then he said, Bring it near to me,

  94. that I may eat of my son's game and bless you.

  95. So he brought it near to him, and he ate,

  96. and he brought him wine, and he drank.

  97. Verse 26.

  98. Then his father Isaac said to him,

  99. Come near and kiss me, my son.

  100. So he came near and kissed him.

  101. And Isaac smelled the smell of his garments

  102. and blessed him and said,

  103. See, the smell of my son

  104. is as the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed.

  105. May God give you of the dew of heaven

  106. and of the fatness of the earth

  107. and plenty of grain and wine.

  108. Let people serve you and nations bow down to you.

  109. Be Lord over your brothers,

  110. and may your mother's sons bow down to you.

  111. Cursed be everyone who curses you,

  112. and blessed be everyone who blesses you.

  113. As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob,

  114. when Jacob had scarcely gone out

  115. from the presence of Isaac his father,

  116. Esau his brother came in from his hunting.

  117. He also prepared delicious food

  118. and brought it to his father.

  119. And he said to his father,

  120. Let my father arise and eat of his son's game

  121. that you may bless me.

  122. His father Isaac said to him,

  123. Who are you?

  124. He answered,

  125. I am your son,

  126. your firstborn Isaac.

  127. Then Isaac trembled very violently and said,

  128. Who was it then that hunted game

  129. and brought it to me?

  130. And I ate it all before you came,

  131. and I have blessed him.

  132. Yes, and he shall be blessed.

  133. Verse 34.

  134. As soon as Esau heard the words of his father,

  135. he cried out with an exceedingly great

  136. and bitter cry,

  137. and said to his father,

  138. Bless me, even me also,

  139. O my father.

  140. But he said,

  141. Your brother came deceitfully,

  142. and he has taken away your blessing.

  143. Esau said,

  144. Is he not rightly named Jacob?

  145. For he has cheated me these two times.

  146. He took away my birthright,

  147. and behold,

  148. now he has taken away my blessing.

  149. Then he said,

  150. Have you not reserved a blessing for me?

  151. Isaac answered and said to Esau,

  152. Behold,

  153. I have made him lord over you.

  154. And all his brothers

  155. I have given to him for servants,

  156. and with grain and wine

  157. I have sustained him.

  158. What then can I do for you,

  159. my son?

  160. Esau said to his father,

  161. Have you but one blessing,

  162. my father?

  163. Bless me,

  164. even me also,

  165. O my father.

  166. And Esau lifted up his voice

  167. and wept.

  168. Then Isaac his father answered

  169. and said to him,

  170. Behold,

  171. away from the fatness of the earth

  172. shall your dwelling be,

  173. and away from the dew of heaven on high.

  174. By your sword you shall live,

  175. and you shall serve your brother.

  176. But when you grow restless,

  177. you shall break his yoke

  178. from your neck.

  179. I invite you to pray with me

  180. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  181. Our father in heaven,

  182. we do thank you again this morning

  183. that you speak to us in your word,

  184. and we ask that you would do it.

  185. You'd do what you've promised to do,

  186. that by your spirit

  187. you would help us

  188. to understand spiritual things.

  189. You'd open our eyes,

  190. that you'd soften our hearts,

  191. that you would lift Christ high

  192. in our sight,

  193. in our vision,

  194. that we would grow

  195. in our love,

  196. in our affection,

  197. our reverence,

  198. our all,

  199. our obedience to him.

  200. And we ask all of these things

  201. in Jesus' name.

  202. Amen.

  203. If you look on page 9

  204. of your worship guide,

  205. you'll see a quote

  206. from Revenge of the Tipping Point

  207. by Malcolm Gladwell,

  208. which says this,

  209. Communities have their own stories,

  210. and those stories are contagious.

  211. And you might be thinking,

  212. wait, is Matthew confused?

  213. Is he preaching the same sermon

  214. from two weeks ago?

  215. Because this is not the first time

  216. you've seen this quote.

  217. This is, in fact,

  218. the same quote we printed

  219. in the worship guide

  220. when we were in Genesis chapter 26.

    Genesis 26 chapter mention

  221. Now I told you about that quote

  222. because remember,

  223. I said this,

  224. families also have their own stories,

  225. and those stories are contagious.

  226. So remember,

  227. there's a story

  228. that is driving the Abraham family,

  229. and it is this,

  230. it is all up to me

  231. to protect and provide for myself.

  232. That's the story

  233. that Abraham passed to Isaac.

  234. It's my cunning,

  235. it's my schemes,

  236. those are actually

  237. what are going to make the difference.

  238. I have to make it happen,

  239. I have to manage life,

  240. I have to make it work.

  241. And when you live by this story,

  242. as we've seen,

  243. it means fearing man more than God,

  244. it means trusting in schemes

  245. more than God and his promises.

  246. And so that's why,

  247. chapter 26,

  248. we saw Isaac lies about Rebekah

  249. in the same way

  250. that Abraham lied about Sarah.

  251. This is the default story,

  252. it's the story that Abraham

  253. and his descendants turn to,

  254. and this story continues

  255. to drive this family

  256. in this passage.

  257. It explains the trickery

  258. and the lies

  259. that show up throughout.

  260. Now to understand all this scheming,

  261. we have to review one other thing.

  262. Remember from four weeks ago,

  263. chapter 25 of Genesis,

  264. there is a rivalry

  265. between Jacob's,

  266. Isaac's sons.

  267. Okay, Jacob and Esau

  268. have a rivalry

  269. that started in their mother's womb.

  270. And it's actually worse than that,

  271. it's not just that

  272. they have a rivalry,

  273. it's that mom and dad

  274. have picked sides

  275. in this battle.

  276. Rebekah loves Jacob.

  277. Isaac loves Esau.

  278. With all that background,

  279. we come to this passage

  280. before us this morning,

  281. which is a story

  282. about who gets the blessing.

  283. Who gets the blessing

  284. that God gave to Abraham?

  285. Remember we talked about

  286. the chain of custody,

  287. when the blessing gets passed

  288. from Abraham to Isaac.

  289. Now there's two sons,

  290. not one.

  291. Who does the blessing pass to?

  292. We're going to look at two things

  293. this morning.

  294. You'll see on page nine

  295. of your worship guide,

  296. our sermon title,

  297. Sinful People,

  298. Faithful God.

  299. And that's our outline

  300. for right now.

  301. Sinful people comes first,

  302. and what I'm going to do

  303. essentially is this,

  304. I'm going to show you

  305. everyone's really bad behavior.

  306. Okay?

  307. No one comes out of this story

  308. looking good.

  309. First,

  310. Isaac behaves poorly.

  311. Isaac has a scheme,

  312. verses one through four,

  313. and he summons Esau

  314. and only Esau

  315. to receive the blessing.

  316. This is not how this

  317. is supposed to work.

  318. If you're familiar

  319. with the story of Genesis,

  320. you know there's going to be

  321. another blessing seen

  322. in chapters 48 and 49

  323. where Jacob calls

  324. all his sons.

  325. Okay?

  326. You're supposed to bring

  327. the whole family in.

  328. Everyone takes part in this.

  329. And so Isaac is kind of

  330. doing this run-around play.

  331. He's going to try to do it

  332. so that one son

  333. and only one son

  334. gets everything.

  335. He wants Esau

  336. to get all of it.

  337. Now there's an irony here.

  338. Had he not done this,

  339. Rebecca could not run

  340. the play that she ran.

  341. Okay?

  342. If he had brought

  343. both sons in,

  344. actually he would have

  345. prevented what happened

  346. to him.

  347. By the way,

  348. he's also not really

  349. supposed to do this

  350. until he's about to die.

  351. He says in this passage,

  352. hey, I don't know

  353. when I'm going to die.

  354. Well, he doesn't die

  355. until Genesis chapter 35,

    Genesis 35 chapter mention

  356. which is over 20 years later.

  357. So he's giving

  358. the blessing early

  359. and he's sneaky about it

  360. so he can only give it

  361. to one son.

  362. By the way,

  363. God already said

  364. in Genesis chapter 25

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  365. when the two sons were born

  366. that it was going to be

  367. Jacob who came out on top.

  368. So Esau's not just being sneaky,

  369. he's actually trying to subvert

  370. what God has already revealed.

  371. And in the blessing,

  372. he tries to reverse that.

  373. If you look at verse 29,

  374. he's setting it up

  375. because he thinks

  376. he's blessing Esau.

  377. He's setting it up

  378. so that Esau actually

  379. ends up on top.

  380. Okay?

  381. So Jacob is a,

  382. so excuse me,

  383. Isaac is just a trickster here.

  384. And it gets worse.

  385. What did we find out

  386. at the end of chapter 26?

  387. Esau has taken foreign wives.

  388. So Isaac should know

  389. that this son,

  390. by the way,

  391. it's not that they're foreign,

  392. it's that they're pagan.

  393. That's the problem.

  394. We'll talk about that next week.

  395. Isaac should know

  396. that this son,

  397. this is for you military people,

  398. is unfit for command.

  399. And yet he's still going

  400. to give him the blessing.

  401. Isaac behaves poorly.

  402. Isaac wants his favorite son

  403. to have the blessing.

  404. Well, guess what?

  405. Rebecca wants her favorite son

  406. to get everything.

  407. And so she has this scheme

  408. and her scheme is that

  409. Jacob pretends to be Esau.

  410. That's verses 5 through 17.

  411. All this trickery, by the way,

  412. is not innocent at all.

  413. Remember, we looked

  414. at the ninth commandment

  415. in our confession of faith.

  416. Rebecca and Isaac,

  417. excuse me,

  418. Rebecca and Jacob

  419. are breaking the Ten Commandments

  420. left and right.

  421. So track with me.

  422. The third commandment says,

  423. do not use God's name in vain.

  424. Oh, look at verse 20.

  425. Isaac said to his son,

  426. how is it that you have found it

  427. so quickly, my son?

  428. He answered,

  429. because the Lord your God

  430. granted me success.

  431. It's using God's name in vain.

  432. No, the Lord did not grant him success.

  433. He's lying through his teeth.

  434. Fifth commandment,

  435. honor your father and your mother.

  436. Here he is taking advantage

  437. of his father's old age

  438. and lying to him.

  439. This is only possible

  440. because Isaac actually can't see.

  441. Okay, he's taking advantage

  442. of his father's infirmity.

  443. If that's not dishonoring,

  444. I don't know what is.

  445. Then we move on

  446. to the ninth commandment.

  447. Don't bear false testimony.

  448. Jacob explicitly lies twice.

  449. Verses 19 and 23.

  450. He says, look, I am Esau.

  451. Of course, the whole performance

  452. is a lie.

  453. We don't need two verses

  454. to prove it.

  455. The whole narrative

  456. ties up Rebecca as well.

  457. She is guilty

  458. as the planner

  459. of the deception.

  460. Rebecca and Jacob

  461. behave poorly.

  462. Now, what about Isaac and Esau?

  463. We've already talked about Isaac

  464. a little bit,

  465. but we're going to talk about it more

  466. because it continues to get bad.

  467. Isaac and Esau

  468. both break the first commandment,

  469. which is this.

  470. You shall have no other gods

  471. before me.

  472. God is clearly

  473. not their first love.

  474. The author goes out of his way

  475. to tell us

  476. what Isaac loves

  477. more than anything else,

  478. which is what?

  479. He loves that delicious food.

  480. Now, we already know that

  481. from chapter 25.

  482. Why does Isaac prefer Esau?

  483. It says it explicitly.

  484. Secondly, Isaac loved Esau

  485. because he ate

  486. of his game.

  487. This has been going on

  488. for years.

  489. And like father,

  490. like son,

  491. Esau has the same problem.

  492. What did Esau do

  493. in chapter 25?

  494. He sells his birthright

  495. for food.

  496. Both father and son

  497. are ruled

  498. by their stomachs.

  499. By the way,

  500. I think I got the count wrong

  501. on delicious food

  502. as I was reading it.

  503. How many did you guys get?

  504. Okay, yeah.

  505. I think I only,

  506. I only even had four

  507. in what I listed here,

  508. but it showed up

  509. even more than I realized

  510. because I didn't do

  511. my count right.

  512. Why does it show up

  513. six times?

  514. So that we can know

  515. without a doubt

  516. that there is nothing

  517. that Isaac loves

  518. more than food.

  519. Verse four,

  520. prepare for me

  521. delicious food

  522. such as I love.

  523. Verse nine,

  524. go to the flock

  525. and bring me

  526. two good young goats

  527. that I may prepare

  528. for them delicious food

  529. for your father

  530. such as he loves.

  531. Verse 14,

  532. and his mother

  533. prepared delicious food

  534. such as his father loved.

  535. Verse 31,

  536. this is now Esau.

  537. He also prepared

  538. delicious food

  539. and brought it

  540. to his father.

  541. Esau gave up

  542. his birthright

  543. for vegetable stew.

  544. Isaac now gives up

  545. his integrity,

  546. his faith in God

  547. for one nice meal.

  548. like father,

  549. like son.

  550. By the way,

  551. there's no rule

  552. that says

  553. you have to send

  554. your son

  555. to go do

  556. some special feat

  557. before you give

  558. the blessing.

  559. Okay,

  560. so Isaac has just

  561. cooked this up

  562. so that he can

  563. have a nice meal.

  564. Remember,

  565. we get to see again

  566. how this works

  567. in Genesis chapters

    Genesis 48 chapter mention

  568. 48 and 49.

  569. Jacob does it.

  570. He doesn't send

  571. anyone to prepare

  572. him a meal.

  573. Okay,

  574. he actually just

  575. blesses them.

  576. And that's what

  577. Isaac is supposed

  578. to do here.

  579. So he is just

  580. steered and ruled

  581. by his outrageous appetite.

  582. We're supposed

  583. to walk away

  584. from this thinking,

  585. man,

  586. this is really gross.

  587. Here's this man

  588. who has just

  589. completely lost

  590. the plot.

  591. What should he be doing?

  592. We found out

  593. at the end

  594. of chapter 26

  595. that Esau

  596. got married

  597. when he was

  598. 40 years old.

  599. Now that matters

  600. because we were told

  601. that Isaac

  602. married Rebecca

  603. when he was also

  604. 40 years old.

  605. So the timing

  606. is the same.

  607. What's different?

  608. Isaac should have

  609. been doing

  610. what Abraham did.

  611. Isaac should have

  612. been going out

  613. and finding

  614. godly spouses

  615. for his sons.

  616. That's what Abraham

  617. did.

  618. Abraham sent

  619. his servant

  620. and said,

  621. I can't have

  622. my children

  623. marrying pagan

  624. wives.

  625. I need you

  626. to go find

  627. someone from

  628. among our own

  629. people.

  630. Isaac's lost

  631. the plot.

  632. He doesn't even

  633. realize what's

  634. supposed to be

  635. happening,

  636. how he's supposed

  637. to be taking

  638. responsibility

  639. and agency

  640. to carry on

  641. God's blessing.

  642. No,

  643. he is worried

  644. about his

  645. next meal.

  646. There's a whole

  647. other sermon,

  648. by the way,

  649. about how Isaac

  650. does not end

  651. well.

  652. And the author

  653. of Genesis

  654. goes out of his

  655. way in a way

  656. we don't have

  657. time to go

  658. into this

  659. morning to

  660. highlight how

  661. poorly Isaac

  662. ends his life.

  663. Okay,

  664. I said both

  665. Isaac and Esau

  666. break the first

  667. commandment,

  668. you shall have

  669. no other gods

  670. before me.

  671. We've talked

  672. about Isaac,

  673. now it's time

  674. for Esau.

  675. Esau is also

  676. ruled by his

  677. appetite as

  678. we've discussed,

  679. not just his

  680. appetite for

  681. food,

  682. he's ruled by

  683. his lust

  684. for women.

  685. The end of

  686. 26,

  687. which we read,

  688. he decides to

  689. go get some

  690. foreign wives

  691. and what does

  692. verse 35 tell

  693. us?

  694. They made

  695. life bitter

  696. for Isaac

  697. and Rebecca.

  698. Remember I

  699. said foreign

  700. wives,

  701. the problem

  702. is not that

  703. they're foreign,

  704. the problem

  705. is that

  706. they're pagan.

  707. So Esau

  708. has gone

  709. out,

  710. he's married

  711. women who

  712. do not

  713. worship the

  714. true and

  715. living God.

  716. They don't

  717. share the

  718. religion of

  719. the Abraham

  720. family.

  721. They're not

  722. people who

  723. follow after

  724. Yahweh and

  725. so it

  726. shouldn't

  727. surprise us

  728. that they

  729. make life

  730. so miserable

  731. for the

  732. extended family.

  733. We're going

  734. to spend

  735. more time on

  736. that next

  737. week so I

  738. won't say

  739. any more.

  740. But in

  741. short,

  742. in case I

  743. haven't made

  744. it clear,

  745. everyone

  746. behaves

  747. poorly.

  748. Isaac

  749. behaves

  750. badly.

  751. He tries to

  752. give the

  753. blessing to

  754. his favorite

  755. son even

  756. though God

  757. had already

  758. said that

  759. Isaac would

  760. rule.

  761. Excuse me,

  762. that Jacob

  763. would rule.

  764. He serves

  765. his stomach

  766. rather than

  767. God.

  768. Rebecca

  769. behaves

  770. badly.

  771. Rebecca

  772. deceives and

  773. dishonors the

  774. husband she

  775. should be

  776. protecting,

  777. especially

  778. because he's

  779. blind.

  780. Jacob

  781. behaves

  782. badly.

  783. He deceives

  784. and dishonors

  785. his father,

  786. his father

  787. defrauds

  788. his brother,

  789. takes God's

  790. name in

  791. vain.

  792. Esau

  793. behaves

  794. badly,

  795. marries

  796. pagan wives

  797. rather than

  798. women who

  799. fear the

  800. Lord.

  801. Everyone

  802. behaves

  803. badly.

  804. But how

  805. does God

  806. behave?

  807. Remember I

  808. told you we

  809. have two

  810. points,

  811. sinful

  812. people,

  813. faithful

  814. God.

  815. We're

  816. going to

  817. turn now

  818. to faithful

  819. God.

  820. God

  821. behaves

  822. is this.

  823. God

  824. accomplishes

  825. his

  826. purposes

  827. no

  828. matter

  829. what.

  830. In the

  831. midst of

  832. everyone's

  833. sin,

  834. God

  835. keeps his

  836. promise.

  837. Remember

  838. his promise,

  839. Genesis

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  840. chapter 25.

  841. Jacob and

  842. Esau are in

  843. the womb.

  844. he says

  845. the older

  846. will serve

  847. the younger.

  848. And what

  849. ends up

  850. happening?

  851. The older

  852. serves

  853. the younger.

  854. Now that

  855. doesn't mean

  856. the end

  857. justifies the

  858. means.

  859. It doesn't

  860. make anyone's

  861. sin correct

  862. in this

  863. passage.

  864. What it

  865. means is

  866. this.

  867. No matter

  868. what your

  869. scheme,

  870. God will

  871. come out

  872. on top.

  873. no matter

  874. the

  875. actions

  876. of men,

  877. God's

  878. end

  879. state

  880. will be

  881. accomplished.

  882. One

  883. commentator

  884. says this,

  885. it is

  886. clear

  887. that God

  888. can accomplish

  889. his holy

  890. purposes

  891. by using

  892. not merely

  893. unholy

  894. people,

  895. but even

  896. the unholy

  897. actions

  898. of those

  899. he has

  900. chosen.

  901. it is

  902. not just

  903. that though,

  904. it is not

  905. just that

  906. God accomplishes

  907. his purposes

  908. no matter

  909. what,

  910. it is also

  911. that God

  912. is faithful

  913. to his

  914. people

  915. no matter

  916. what.

  917. God made

  918. a promise

  919. to Abraham.

  920. He made

  921. a promise

  922. to Abraham

  923. that his

  924. descendants

  925. would be

  926. as the

  927. sands on

  928. the seashore

  929. and the

  930. stars in

  931. the sky.

  932. He promised

  933. to Abraham

  934. that his

  935. descendants

  936. would be

  937. the blessing

  938. to the

  939. nations.

  940. And you

  941. know what?

  942. God is

  943. going to

  944. keep that

  945. promise.

  946. The men

  947. and women

  948. he has

  949. chosen

  950. break the

  951. Ten Commandments

  952. left and

  953. right.

  954. God's

  955. promise

  956. is

  957. unbroken.

  958. God's

  959. kingdom.

  960. point is

  961. this.

  962. The

  963. generational

  964. sin

  965. of your

  966. family

  967. cannot

  968. stand

  969. in the

  970. way

  971. of the

  972. freight

  973. train

  974. of God's

  975. kingdom.

  976. God

  977. no matter

  978. how

  979. powerful

  980. the

  981. forces

  982. that

  983. flow

  984. down

  985. to you

  986. from

  987. previous

  988. generations

  989. God

  990. is

  991. more

  992. powerful

  993. still.

  994. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 23 chapter mention

  995. chapter

  996. 23

  997. his

  998. word

  999. is like

  1000. a hammer

  1001. that breaks

  1002. a rock

  1003. into pieces.

  1004. there is

  1005. nothing

  1006. so

  1007. powerful

  1008. that

  1009. God's

  1010. word

  1011. is not

  1012. more

  1013. powerful

  1014. still.

  1015. Now I'm

  1016. not peddling

  1017. cheap grace

  1018. here.

  1019. Sometimes

  1020. it's tempting

  1021. for people

  1022. to hear

  1023. things like

  1024. that and

  1025. think oh

  1026. so what

  1027. Matthew's

  1028. saying is

  1029. I can

  1030. do

  1031. whatever

  1032. I want

  1033. and it

  1034. doesn't

  1035. matter.

  1036. No.

  1037. In this

  1038. one day

  1039. and this

  1040. one episode

  1041. the Abraham

  1042. family has

  1043. made a

  1044. mess that

  1045. will echo

  1046. for hundreds

  1047. of years.

  1048. Next

  1049. week you're

  1050. going to

  1051. see that

  1052. Esau

  1053. threatens

  1054. to kill

  1055. Jacob

  1056. and so

  1057. Jacob

  1058. has to

  1059. run away

  1060. and doesn't

  1061. see his

  1062. brother again

  1063. for 20

  1064. years.

  1065. Remember

  1066. that Jacob

  1067. is Rebecca's

  1068. favorite

  1069. son.

  1070. She

  1071. will

  1072. never

  1073. see him

  1074. again.

  1075. Isaac

  1076. gets to

  1077. watch this

  1078. unfold in

  1079. his old

  1080. age as

  1081. his sons

  1082. are at

  1083. each other's

  1084. throats.

  1085. By the

  1086. way Esau's

  1087. descendants

  1088. become the

  1089. Edomites

  1090. and the

  1091. Edomites

  1092. are going

  1093. to be a

  1094. thorn in

  1095. the side

  1096. of God's

  1097. people for

  1098. hundreds

  1099. hundreds

  1100. of years.

  1101. This is

  1102. not

  1103. insignificant.

  1104. I am

  1105. not telling

  1106. you, oh

  1107. God is

  1108. faithful, do

  1109. whatever you

  1110. want.

  1111. No, I'm

  1112. saying God

  1113. is faithful,

  1114. follow his

  1115. commands.

  1116. Choose the

  1117. easy way,

  1118. not the

  1119. hard way.

  1120. It's the

  1121. same quote

  1122. from two

  1123. weeks ago,

  1124. page nine

  1125. on your

  1126. worship guide

  1127. from Crime

  1128. and punishment.

  1129. Your worst

  1130. sin is that

  1131. you have

  1132. destroyed and

  1133. betrayed

  1134. yourself for

  1135. nothing.

  1136. Isaac,

  1137. Jacob,

  1138. Esau,

  1139. and Rebekah

  1140. have all

  1141. thought that

  1142. their scheming

  1143. was going to

  1144. be the answer

  1145. and the only

  1146. people they've

  1147. punished are

  1148. themselves.

  1149. One author

  1150. says this,

  1151. trusting God

  1152. is hard,

  1153. but failing

  1154. to trust God

  1155. is even

  1156. harder.

  1157. Trusting God

  1158. is hard,

  1159. failing to

  1160. trust God

  1161. is even

  1162. harder.

  1163. God will

  1164. accomplish

  1165. his purposes.

  1166. God will

  1167. keep the

  1168. promises that

  1169. he has

  1170. made,

  1171. and our

  1172. actions still

  1173. have consequences.

  1174. We can

  1175. still betray

  1176. ourselves,

  1177. for nothing.

  1178. Do you

  1179. want to

  1180. avoid

  1181. pain?

  1182. Do you

  1183. want to

  1184. do what's

  1185. for your

  1186. good

  1187. and God's

  1188. glory?

  1189. Proverbs

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  1190. chapter 3

  1191. tells us

  1192. how to do

  1193. that.

  1194. Trust in

  1195. the Lord

  1196. with all

  1197. your heart

  1198. and do

  1199. not lean

  1200. on your

  1201. own

  1202. understanding.

  1203. In all

  1204. your ways

  1205. acknowledge

  1206. him and

  1207. he will

  1208. make straight

  1209. your paths.

  1210. Be not

  1211. wise in

  1212. your own

  1213. eyes.

  1214. Fear the

  1215. Lord and

  1216. turn away

  1217. from evil.

  1218. Remember the

  1219. story of the

  1220. Abraham family.

  1221. It is all

  1222. up to me

  1223. and my

  1224. cleverness

  1225. and my

  1226. skill and

  1227. my ability

  1228. to control

  1229. and manage

  1230. the world.

  1231. God

  1232. is all

  1233. and the

  1234. gospel tells

  1235. the opposite

  1236. story.

  1237. The gospel

  1238. tells the

  1239. story of

  1240. Psalm 23.

  1241. The Lord

  1242. is my

  1243. shepherd.

  1244. I shall

  1245. not

  1246. want.

  1247. Surely

  1248. goodness

  1249. and mercy

  1250. will follow

  1251. me all

  1252. the days

  1253. of my

  1254. life.

  1255. And I

  1256. don't have

  1257. to scheme

  1258. and lie

  1259. and plan

  1260. for that

  1261. to happen.

  1262. what everyone

  1263. in this

  1264. story

  1265. misses

  1266. is to

  1267. trust

  1268. in God

  1269. and his

  1270. provision.

  1271. And as I've

  1272. told you many

  1273. times, we

  1274. have even

  1275. greater reasons

  1276. to trust in

  1277. God than

  1278. Isaac and

  1279. Jacob and

  1280. Esau and

  1281. Rebecca did.

  1282. Because we've

  1283. seen something,

  1284. we look back

  1285. to something

  1286. that they only

  1287. look forward

  1288. to, which

  1289. is the

  1290. death and

  1291. the resurrection

  1292. of Jesus

  1293. Christ.

  1294. that God

  1295. sends his

  1296. one and

  1297. only son

  1298. to live

  1299. the perfect

  1300. life that

  1301. we should

  1302. have lived

  1303. and to

  1304. die the

  1305. death that

  1306. we deserved.

  1307. If he

  1308. did that,

  1309. will he

  1310. not do

  1311. everything

  1312. else?

  1313. Remember

  1314. Romans

    Romans 8:32

  1315. chapter 8

  1316. verse 32.

  1317. He who

  1318. did not

  1319. spare his

  1320. own son

  1321. but gave

  1322. him up

  1323. for us

  1324. all,

  1325. how will

  1326. he not

  1327. also with

  1328. him graciously

  1329. give us

  1330. all things.

  1331. Sinful

  1332. people,

  1333. faithful

  1334. God.

  1335. What love

  1336. could remember,

  1337. no wrongs

  1338. we have

  1339. done,

  1340. omniscient

  1341. all-knowing,

  1342. he counts

  1343. not their

  1344. sum.

  1345. Thrown

  1346. into a

  1347. sea,

  1348. without

  1349. bottom

  1350. or shore,

  1351. our sins

  1352. they are

  1353. many,

  1354. his mercy

  1355. is more.

  1356. Let's

  1357. pray.

  1358. Our

  1359. Father in

  1360. heaven,

  1361. we thank

  1362. you and

  1363. we praise

  1364. you that

  1365. you keep

  1366. your promise

  1367. no matter

  1368. what.

  1369. We ask

  1370. that you

  1371. would root

  1372. that deep

  1373. in our

  1374. hearts that

  1375. we would

  1376. trust you

  1377. rather than

  1378. ourselves,

  1379. that we

  1380. would look

  1381. to you

  1382. and your

  1383. provision

  1384. more than

  1385. anything else,

  1386. that you

  1387. would

  1388. lead us.

  1389. Psalm 23

  1390. says,

  1391. lead us

  1392. streams of

  1393. water.

  1394. Ask all

  1395. of these

  1396. things in

  1397. Jesus'

  1398. name.

  1399. Amen.
