  1. My name's Matthew Capone, and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  3. You may notice on Sunday mornings when Andy's leading worship, I sit over there on the front row,

  4. and I do something a little bit odd, which is I read the song lyrics often off the back projector rather than the front projector.

  5. And the reason I do that is because it allows me to look out on the whole congregation and see you all.

  6. And I have many thoughts on a Sunday morning.

  7. And this morning I was just thinking as I looked out on you all singing about just God's faithfulness and his grace to this church over the last nine years that I've been here.

  8. And, of course, many, many your years, 21 years before that.

  9. Our church turns 30 this year.

  10. I don't know if you knew that.

  11. We're at three decades now, and I'm just grateful for the ways God has grown us and is growing us and the people that he's brought.

  12. And Ruth coming to be with our music and all the deacons and elders that God has raised up over the last number of years.

  13. And, you know, it takes a whole team for a church to move forward.

  14. So I'm grateful, grateful for you all.

  15. We're continuing our series in the book of Genesis.

  16. The book of Genesis is the origin story of God's people, Israel.

  17. This summer we are looking at the story of Isaac and Jacob, mostly Jacob, in chapters 25 through 36.

  18. And I want to remind you where we are in that story.

  19. If you don't know where we're at in the story, this next part is actually not going to make sense.

  20. So chapter 27, Jacob steals Esau's birthright.

  21. Esau is so upset that he threatens to kill Jacob.

  22. And so Rebekah, Jacob and Esau's mom, has Jacob flee to Laban.

  23. Laban is Rebekah's brother, Jacob's uncle.

  24. You also may remember he's not just fleeing from Esau.

  25. He's not just trying to protect his life.

  26. He's also seeking a wife.

  27. The beginning of chapter 28, Isaac tells Jacob, hey, go.

  28. Not just flee to Laban.

  29. Actually, Isaac doesn't know why he's fleeing to escape being killed.

  30. But go, and I want you to marry one of Laban's daughters.

  31. So that's the part we've been on ever since then.

  32. Jacob is doing two things.

  33. He's on his way to find Laban.

  34. He's on his way to marry one of Laban's daughters.

  35. That takes us to this week.

  36. Jacob's going to end his journey.

  37. Verse 1, he's going to arrive at Laban's place.

  38. We're going to see Jacob's sin and God's promise.

  39. I had a brain malfunction in your worship guide.

  40. It says our title is Isaac's sin and God's promise, and I don't know why I did that.

  41. So Jacob's sin, God's promise.

  42. As I sometimes say when we come up against passages like this, this is a really rich passage,

  43. and I'm probably not going to say even more than what I'm going to say,

  44. just because we could probably do two or three sermons on this.

  45. So I'm going to say something, something about what's happening in this passage, not everything.

  46. With that, I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 21, starting at 29, starting at verse 1,

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  47. which you'll find on page 7 of your worship guide.

  48. As you turn there, remember Isaiah chapter 40 tells us that the grass withers and the flower fades,

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  49. but the word of our God will stand forever.

  50. And so that's why we read now Genesis chapter 29, starting at verse 1.

    Genesis 29 chapter mention

  51. Then Jacob went on his journey and came to the land of the people of the east.

  52. As he looked, he saw a well in the field, and behold, three flocks of sheep lying beside it,

  53. for out of that well the flocks were watered.

  54. The stone on the well's mouth was large, and when all the flocks were gathered there,

  55. the shepherds would roll the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep,

  56. and put the stone back in its place over the mouth of the well.

  57. Verse 4.

  58. Jacob said to them,

  59. My brothers, where do you come from?

  60. They said, We are from Haran.

  61. He said to them,

  62. Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?

  63. They said,

  64. We know him.

  65. He said to them,

  66. Is it well with him?

  67. They said,

  68. It is well, and see, Rachel his daughter is coming with the sheep.

  69. He said,

  70. Behold, it is still high day.

  71. It is not time for the livestock to be gathered together.

  72. Watch the sheep and go pasture them.

  73. But they said,

  74. We cannot until all the flocks are gathered together,

  75. and the stone is rolled from the mouth of the well.

  76. Then we water the sheep.

  77. Verse 9.

  78. While he was still speaking with them,

  79. Rachel came with her father's sheep,

  80. for she was a shepherdess.

  81. Now as soon as Jacob saw Rachel,

  82. the daughter of Laban, his mother's brother,

  83. and the sheep of Laban, his mother's brother,

  84. Jacob came near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth,

  85. and watered the flock of Laban, his mother's brother.

  86. Then Jacob kissed Rachel and wept aloud.

  87. And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's kinsman,

  88. and that he was Rebecca's son.

  89. And she ran and told her father.

  90. As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister's son,

  91. he ran to meet him,

  92. and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house.

  93. Jacob told Laban all these things.

  94. And Laban said to him,

  95. Surely you are my bone and my flesh.

  96. And he stayed with him a month.

  97. Verse 15.

  98. Then Laban said to Jacob,

  99. Because you are my kinsman,

  100. should you therefore serve me for nothing?

  101. Tell me, what shall your wages be?

  102. Now Laban had two daughters.

  103. The name of the older was Leah,

  104. and the name of the younger was Rachel.

  105. Leah's eyes were weak,

  106. but Rachel was beautiful in form and appearance.

  107. Jacob loved Rachel.

  108. And he said,

  109. I will serve you seven years for your younger daughter, Rachel.

  110. Laban said,

  111. It is better that I give her to you

  112. than that I should give her to any other man.

  113. Stay with me.

  114. So Jacob served seven years for Rachel,

  115. and they seemed to him but a few days

  116. because of the love he had for her.

  117. Then Jacob said to Laban,

  118. Give me my wife,

  119. that I may go into her,

  120. for my time is completed.

  121. So Laban gathered together

  122. all the people of the place

  123. and made a feast.

  124. But in the evening,

  125. he took his daughter Leah

  126. and brought her to Jacob,

  127. and he went into her.

  128. Laban gave his female servant Zilpah

  129. to his daughter Leah

  130. to be her servant.

  131. And in the morning,

  132. behold,

  133. it was Leah.

  134. And Jacob said to Laban,

  135. What is this you have done to me?

  136. Did I not serve with you for Jacob?

  137. Why then have you deceived me?

  138. Laban said,

  139. It is not so done in our country

  140. to give the younger before the firstborn.

  141. Complete the week of this one,

  142. and we will give you the other also in return

  143. for serving me another seven years.

  144. Jacob did so and completed her week.

  145. Then Laban gave his daughter Rachel

  146. to be his wife.

  147. Laban gave his female servant Bilhah

  148. to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.

  149. So Jacob went into Rachel also,

  150. and he loved Rachel more than Leah

  151. and served Laban for another seven years.

  152. I invite you to pray with me

  153. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  154. Our Father in heaven,

  155. we do once again thank you

  156. that you have not left us

  157. to wander in the dark as orphans,

  158. but instead you come to us as our Father.

  159. You speak to us clearly in your word.

  160. We ask that you would do that this morning,

  161. that you would open our eyes,

  162. you'd unstop our ears,

  163. you would clear our minds,

  164. and you'd soften our hearts,

  165. that we would be able to see and hear

  166. and believe and understand

  167. everything that's written about you

  168. in your word.

  169. Most of all,

  170. we ask that you'd show us Jesus.

  171. You'd show us his mercy,

  172. his compassion,

  173. his tenderness

  174. with foolish sinners

  175. like Jacob,

  176. foolish sinners like us.

  177. We ask all of these things

  178. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  179. Amen.

  180. This morning,

  181. I'm going to teach you an insult.

  182. I don't recommend insulting people,

  183. so you need to use this responsibly.

  184. This one, I believe,

  185. comes from the kids,

  186. and it's become popular in recent years.

  187. This insult is when you call someone

  188. or something great value brand.

  189. Okay, and great value brand,

  190. one of Walmart's store brands,

  191. right?

  192. Hopefully you're familiar with this.

  193. And so when you say someone

  194. is great value brand,

  195. you're saying,

  196. they're not the name brand.

  197. They're similar.

  198. You know, it's the same product,

  199. but it's not quite as good.

  200. So here's how it works.

  201. Let's say you see a man.

  202. He's fit.

  203. He's in good shape.

  204. He's got a full head of hair,

  205. and he's on the short side.

  206. Okay?

  207. You might say,

  208. great value brand,

  209. Tom Cruise.

  210. He's like Tom Cruise, right?

  211. He's short.

  212. He's fit.

  213. He's got a full head of hair,

  214. but he's not a movie star.

  215. He's not a model.

  216. Great value brand.

  217. It's a knockoff, right?

  218. It's a similar product,

  219. lower quality.

  220. You could have bought the Oreos,

  221. but you didn't.

  222. You bought chocolate sandwich cookies.

  223. That's on you, okay?

  224. Jacob, in this story,

  225. is a knockoff of Abraham's servant

  226. in Genesis chapter 24.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  227. Remember in 24,

  228. Abraham's servant goes to find

  229. a wife for Isaac,

  230. and he meets Rebecca.

  231. Now, in chapter 29,

  232. Jacob goes to find his own wife

  233. and meets Rachel,

  234. and there's a very intentional way

  235. in which the author of Genesis

  236. is making chapter 29

  237. an echo of chapter 24,

  238. and I'll explain this to you.

  239. We're going to jump right into the story.

  240. So track with me.

  241. Verse 1,

  242. Jacob went on his journey.

  243. That is,

  244. Jacob is going on the journey

  245. that began a couple chapters earlier

  246. to Uncle Laban.

  247. Remember,

  248. to escape Esau,

  249. who wants to kill him

  250. and to find a wife.

  251. Verse 1 again,

  252. came to the land

  253. of the people of the east.

  254. That is the land

  255. of his Uncle Laban,

  256. and what does he find there?

  257. Verse 2,

  258. he finds a well.

  259. Who else ran into a well

  260. on his journey for a wife?

  261. Abraham's servant

  262. in chapter 24.

  263. Jacob stops at the well.

  264. Abraham's servant

  265. stopped at the well.

  266. Jacob finds a wife.

  267. He finds Rachel at the well.

  268. Abraham's servant

  269. finds a wife.

  270. He finds Rebecca

  271. at the well.

  272. In fact,

  273. some commentators think

  274. it might be,

  275. this passage doesn't tell us,

  276. but it might be

  277. the exact same well.

  278. So this is deja vu.

  279. We are repeating

  280. this same kind of type

  281. and trope here,

  282. but then it gets interesting

  283. because instead of similarities,

  284. we have differences.

  285. Chapter 24,

  286. who was it

  287. who drew the water?

  288. It was Rebecca.

  289. It was the woman.

  290. Abraham's servant

  291. waits for Rebecca

  292. to water his camels

  293. because he wants to test

  294. Rebecca's character.

  295. Okay?

  296. Instead, here,

  297. Jacob draws the water

  298. and this is one place

  299. where the story gets fun.

  300. Go with me to verse 10.

  301. We're told Jacob

  302. single-handedly

  303. rolls away the stone

  304. from the well,

  305. which is a big deal

  306. because we were told,

  307. verse 2,

  308. the stone on the well's mouth

  309. was large.

  310. Then,

  311. in case we missed it,

  312. verse 3,

  313. all these shepherds,

  314. they're waiting around.

  315. They say,

  316. we don't roll away the stone

  317. until everyone is here.

  318. Why?

  319. It's a compound lift.

  320. Okay?

  321. Everyone helps move the stone

  322. because it is so big.

  323. It requires multiple men

  324. to uncover this well.

  325. So Jacob is flexing

  326. on all the other shepherds.

  327. He is clearly a strong man.

  328. He is showing off to Rachel.

  329. He is doing what is impressive

  330. and even worse

  331. or maybe even better.

  332. Watch what he also does.

  333. So he's flexing in front

  334. of all these shepherds.

  335. By the way,

  336. he insulted them

  337. when he said,

  338. shouldn't you be out,

  339. you know,

  340. letting your sheep graze?

  341. He's saying,

  342. you're really lazy.

  343. You're really lazy

  344. and I'm also going to show you

  345. that I can single-handedly do

  346. what it takes a bunch of you to do.

  347. Then,

  348. notice this again,

  349. verse 10,

  350. he rolls the stone

  351. from the well's mouth

  352. and watered the flock

  353. of Laban,

  354. his mother's brother.

  355. Remember when he shows up,

  356. this is,

  357. I think,

  358. in verse 1,

  359. verse 2,

  360. there's three flocks

  361. of sheep waiting.

  362. There's a bunch of shepherds

  363. who are ahead

  364. of Rachel in line.

  365. And Jacob says,

  366. you know what?

  367. I don't really care.

  368. She's going to skip all of you.

  369. You showed up early

  370. because you wanted to be

  371. first to the water.

  372. Guess what?

  373. This girl that I like,

  374. she's going to jump

  375. all of you.

  376. Okay?

  377. Abraham's servant

  378. was interested

  379. in Rebecca's character.

  380. Abraham's servant

  381. wanted a godly wife

  382. for Isaac.

  383. Jacob

  384. is not interested

  385. in that.

  386. Jacob is interested

  387. in how attracted

  388. he is

  389. to Rachel.

  390. He's not focused

  391. on a godly wife.

  392. He's focused

  393. on a beautiful wife.

  394. There's a stark contrast

  395. between the first

  396. well episode

  397. and the second

  398. episode.

  399. Notice what it says

  400. in verse 10 again.

  401. When does he roll

  402. away the stone?

  403. He rolls the stone

  404. away when he saw

  405. Rachel,

  406. the daughter of Laban.

  407. But it is not just

  408. because he sees Rachel

  409. and the sheep

  410. of Laban,

  411. his mother's brother.

  412. So there's two things

  413. going on.

  414. He sees Rachel.

  415. Okay?

  416. Rachel's beautiful.

  417. I need to impress her

  418. by rolling away

  419. the stone.

  420. But there's something

  421. else going on.

  422. Rachel's dad

  423. is rich.

  424. He's got those sheep.

  425. Okay?

  426. So there's a

  427. multiple things

  428. that are attractive here.

  429. He's like,

  430. oh, I see the woman

  431. and I see the wealth

  432. of her family.

  433. It's go time.

  434. I'm going to roll

  435. that stone

  436. away.

  437. The differences

  438. continue.

  439. The next ones

  440. matter even more.

  441. You may remember

  442. Abraham's servant

  443. stops and prays

  444. to God

  445. before he does

  446. anything.

  447. Jacob,

  448. no prayer.

  449. Abraham's servant

  450. then stops

  451. and gives thanks

  452. to God

  453. after he connects

  454. with Rebecca.

  455. Jacob,

  456. no prayer.

  457. As clearly

  458. as he can,

  459. the writer of Genesis

  460. is trying to show us

  461. this.

  462. Abraham's servant

  463. trusted God

  464. and relied

  465. on God.

  466. Jacob,

  467. Jacob

  468. trusts

  469. himself

  470. and relies

  471. on himself.

  472. Which gives us

  473. to a bigger point.

  474. Jacob

  475. is rough

  476. around the edges.

  477. Yes,

  478. God made this

  479. great promise

  480. to him

  481. that Andy

  482. explained last week.

  483. God reminded him

  484. of his promises

  485. to the patriarchs

  486. that are his promises

  487. as well.

  488. God adds to that

  489. that his presence

  490. is going to be

  491. with Jacob.

  492. Jacob,

  493. and Jacob

  494. keeps living out

  495. the story

  496. of the Abraham family.

  497. We've talked about

  498. this before.

  499. The story is this.

  500. It's all up to me

  501. and my skill

  502. and my cleverness,

  503. my strategies

  504. and my schemes.

  505. Jesus is highlighting

  506. then for us

  507. how much

  508. Jacob

  509. needs

  510. to grow.

  511. Thankfully,

  512. God is still

  513. at work.

  514. He's going to use

  515. the sandpaper

  516. of life

  517. to smooth out

  518. Jacob's rough

  519. edges.

  520. Jacob

  521. is going to

  522. suffer

  523. and he's going

  524. to suffer

  525. greatly

  526. to become

  527. the man

  528. that God

  529. is calling

  530. him

  531. to be.

  532. Andy read

  533. this for us

  534. earlier this morning

  535. from Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  536. chapter 12.

  537. For the Lord

  538. disciplines

  539. the one he loves

  540. and chastises

  541. every son

  542. whom

  543. he

  544. receives.

  545. That takes us

  546. to the next

  547. half,

  548. the second part

  549. of this story.

  550. Verse 12,

  551. Rachel runs

  552. to Laban

  553. and tells him

  554. about this

  555. impressive man,

  556. this strong man

  557. who also happens

  558. to be a relative.

  559. So then verses

  560. 13 and 14,

  561. Laban welcomes

  562. him,

  563. brings him

  564. into his house.

  565. Verse 14,

  566. I don't want you guys

  567. to miss this.

  568. I can't tell you

  569. everything but I want

  570. to tell you this.

  571. He says,

  572. surely you are

  573. my bone

  574. and flesh.

  575. Now on the surface

  576. he's saying,

  577. yeah,

  578. we're definitely

  579. related.

  580. But he says

  581. that after

  582. Jacob told him

  583. everything,

  584. all these things.

  585. Commentators think

  586. there's a double

  587. entendre here.

  588. Laban is saying,

  589. yeah,

  590. you're my relative.

  591. Also,

  592. you're a trickster

  593. like I'm a trickster.

  594. Game recognizes

  595. game.

  596. I see what's

  597. going on here.

  598. Oh,

  599. you tricked

  600. your brother

  601. out of his birthright?

  602. Yeah,

  603. I do things

  604. like that.

  605. I do things

  606. like that.

  607. Yeah,

  608. you and me,

  609. same,

  610. same.

  611. We're the same

  612. here.

  613. We do some

  614. things.

  615. So Jacob's

  616. a strong man.

  617. He's a great

  618. worker.

  619. Laban wants

  620. him on staff.

  621. So that leads

  622. to the negotiations.

  623. This is verses

  624. 15 through

  625. 20.

  626. Verse 18,

  627. he offers

  628. seven years

  629. for Rachel.

  630. I won't go

  631. into the details

  632. but seven years

  633. is exorbitant

  634. for a bride price.

  635. Okay,

  636. so Jacob

  637. is offering

  638. above market

  639. rate.

  640. He doesn't,

  641. he's not playing

  642. the art of the deal

  643. here.

  644. Okay,

  645. he's not coming

  646. in under

  647. so he can

  648. negotiate over.

  649. No,

  650. he offers

  651. a ridiculously

  652. good price.

  653. Of course,

  654. Laban immediately

  655. accepts it.

  656. Oh man,

  657. this,

  658. you know,

  659. there's a sucker

  660. made every day.

  661. Seven years,

  662. yeah,

  663. let's go.

  664. Isaac's

  665. failure

  666. continues,

  667. by the way.

  668. Remember,

  669. we've talked

  670. about the fact

  671. Isaac,

  672. Jacob's father,

  673. is ruled

  674. by his

  675. appetites.

  676. Abraham's

  677. servant

  678. came with

  679. money

  680. to pay

  681. the bride

  682. price.

  683. So Abraham's

  684. servant,

  685. you'll remember,

  686. chapter 24,

  687. he shows up

  688. at the well,

  689. he pays

  690. the bride

  691. price,

  692. immediately

  693. takes Rebecca

  694. and goes

  695. back home.

  696. That's what

  697. should have

  698. happened here.

  699. Jacob doesn't

  700. have any money

  701. for the bride

  702. price because

  703. Isaac didn't

  704. give him

  705. any.

  706. Isaac's

  707. negligence

  708. and his

  709. selfishness

  710. continue

  711. to damage

  712. his son.

  713. So we have

  714. this bad

  715. deal.

  716. Okay,

  717. Jacob offers

  718. more than

  719. he should.

  720. He shouldn't

  721. even have

  722. to offer.

  723. His father

  724. should have

  725. given him

  726. what he

  727. needed to

  728. pay a

  729. bride price.

  730. And then it

  731. gets worse.

  732. There's the

  733. bait and switch.

  734. Verse 21,

  735. he goes to

  736. Laban,

  737. he says,

  738. give me my

  739. wife.

  740. Verse 23,

  741. there's the

  742. switcheroo.

  743. Rachel and

  744. Laban are

  745. switched out.

  746. He gives

  747. him his

  748. other daughter,

  749. the unattractive

  750. daughter,

  751. the one we're

  752. told is weak

  753. in the eyes.

  754. And verse 25

  755. says it all

  756. in just a few

  757. words.

  758. And in the

  759. morning,

  760. behold,

  761. it was

  762. Leah.

  763. Genesis is a

  764. brilliant piece

  765. of literature.

  766. Okay,

  767. notice what

  768. happens here.

  769. Jacob,

  770. remember Jacob

  771. tricked his

  772. father to

  773. give him the

  774. oldest's

  775. birthright.

  776. And how

  777. was he able

  778. to do that?

  779. He tricked

  780. his father

  781. because of

  782. his father's

  783. blindness.

  784. What does

  785. Laban do?

  786. He tricks

  787. Jacob because

  788. of his

  789. blindness.

  790. He can't

  791. see what's

  792. happening in

  793. the dark.

  794. There's this

  795. poetic justice

  796. that's happening

  797. here.

  798. The trickster

  799. is tricked.

  800. And it's

  801. not just that

  802. the trickster

  803. is tricked,

  804. he's tricked

  805. with his

  806. very own

  807. scheme.

  808. He really

  809. has met

  810. his match.

  811. Jacob's used

  812. his own plan

  813. against him.

  814. Oh yeah,

  815. you ran that

  816. play with your

  817. dad where he

  818. couldn't see?

  819. That's actually

  820. a good one.

  821. I'm going to

  822. take that.

  823. I'm going to

  824. use that too.

  825. I'm going to run

  826. a play where

  827. you can't

  828. see.

  829. I can borrow

  830. some tricks.

  831. Then he makes

  832. it even worse.

  833. He really digs

  834. the knife in

  835. in verse 26.

  836. Laban said,

  837. it is not so

  838. done in our

  839. country to

  840. give the

  841. younger before

  842. the firstborn.

  843. And this is a

  844. mic drop.

  845. Laban is saying,

  846. you know that

  847. trick you pulled

  848. with your dad?

  849. We don't do

  850. that here.

  851. Oh, you thought

  852. that was real

  853. smart?

  854. Yeah, that

  855. actually doesn't

  856. fly over here.

  857. You thought you

  858. could switch the

  859. younger and the

  860. older?

  861. Yeah, Laban

  862. doesn't do that.

  863. Laban actually

  864. respects the

  865. birth order.

  866. Typically,

  867. commentators tell

  868. us the words

  869. first or second

  870. would be used.

  871. It's strange

  872. here that he

  873. says youngest

  874. and oldest,

  875. and he's doing

  876. this to really

  877. give it to

  878. Jacob.

  879. Jacob.

  880. The Apostle

  881. Paul,

  882. Galatians

    Galatians 6 chapter mention

  883. chapter 6,

  884. says this,

  885. Do not be

  886. deceived.

  887. God is not

  888. mocked.

  889. For whatever

  890. one sows,

  891. that will

  892. he also

  893. reap.

  894. The point

  895. is this.

  896. God is

  897. disciplining

  898. Jacob.

  899. God is

  900. bringing

  901. Jacob to

  902. the end

  903. of himself.

  904. God is

  905. bringing Jacob

  906. to a place

  907. where his

  908. schemes and

  909. his tricks

  910. no longer

  911. work.

  912. He's putting

  913. him in a

  914. position he

  915. cannot lie

  916. his way

  917. out of.

  918. He's saying,

  919. look,

  920. Jacob,

  921. you're actually

  922. going to be

  923. forced to

  924. rely on me.

  925. And that's

  926. actually what's

  927. going to

  928. happen over

  929. the next few

  930. chapters.

  931. Jacob is

  932. going to

  933. learn that

  934. his hope

  935. and his

  936. only hope

  937. is in

  938. God.

  939. For the

  940. Lord disciplines

  941. the one

  942. he loves

  943. and chastises

  944. every son

  945. whom he

  946. receives.

  947. as the

  948. story goes

  949. on,

  950. we're

  951. going to

  952. see

  953. Jacob

  954. trust

  955. God

  956. more

  957. and

  958. more

  959. and

  960. trust

  961. himself

  962. less

  963. and

  964. less.

  965. Jacob

  966. is going

  967. to have

  968. to learn

  969. the hard

  970. way,

  971. but

  972. Jacob

  973. is

  974. going

  975. to

  976. learn.

  977. Christian,

  978. in the

  979. failures,

  980. in the

  981. hardships

  982. of your

  983. life,

  984. when your

  985. foolishness

  986. finally catches

  987. up with you,

  988. and it will,

  989. that's how

  990. foolishness

  991. works,

  992. when your

  993. lies finally

  994. come out,

  995. when your

  996. tricks

  997. stop working,

  998. when your

  999. children come

  1000. to you as

  1001. adults and

  1002. say,

  1003. this is how

  1004. you failed

  1005. me,

  1006. when your

  1007. wife comes

  1008. to you

  1009. and finally

  1010. shows you

  1011. her pain,

  1012. God

  1013. is still

  1014. at work.

  1015. He

  1016. hasn't given

  1017. up on you.

  1018. It will

  1019. be painful,

  1020. just like it

  1021. was for

  1022. Jacob.

  1023. God is

  1024. using that

  1025. pain to

  1026. purify you,

  1027. to refine

  1028. you,

  1029. to shape

  1030. you,

  1031. to look

  1032. more like

  1033. Jesus.

  1034. God is

  1035. not done

  1036. with you.

  1037. Malachi

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  1038. chapter 3

  1039. says this,

  1040. speaking of

  1041. God,

  1042. he will

  1043. sit as a

  1044. refiner and

  1045. purifier of

  1046. silver,

  1047. and he will

  1048. purify the

  1049. sons of

  1050. Levi and

  1051. refine them

  1052. like gold

  1053. and silver.

  1054. God is

  1055. refining

  1056. Jacob like

  1057. gold and

  1058. silver.

  1059. He has

  1060. put him

  1061. in the

  1062. heat,

  1063. and he

  1064. will burn

  1065. his impurities

  1066. away.

  1067. for 20

  1068. years,

  1069. 20 years,

  1070. think about

  1071. that.

  1072. Jacob is

  1073. going to

  1074. learn little

  1075. by little

  1076. to trust

  1077. and follow

  1078. God more

  1079. than he

  1080. trusts

  1081. himself.

  1082. even more

  1083. than that,

  1084. as we've

  1085. talked about

  1086. many times,

  1087. God remains

  1088. faithful to

  1089. his promises.

  1090. Andy talked

  1091. about this

  1092. last week,

  1093. last week's

  1094. passage.

  1095. God promised

  1096. his presence

  1097. to Jacob.

  1098. God repeated

  1099. his promises

  1100. to Jacob's

  1101. forefathers,

  1102. and notice

  1103. God's hand

  1104. in this

  1105. passage behind

  1106. the scenes,

  1107. still at

  1108. work.

  1109. Is God

  1110. with Jacob?

  1111. Is his

  1112. presence there

  1113. as he

  1114. promised?

  1115. Absolutely.

  1116. Jacob

  1117. appears

  1118. at the

  1119. right well

  1120. at the

  1121. right time,

  1122. and it's

  1123. clear from

  1124. his questions

  1125. to the

  1126. shepherds

  1127. that he

  1128. has no

  1129. idea.

  1130. He has

  1131. no idea

  1132. that God

  1133. has just

  1134. put him

  1135. exactly

  1136. where he

  1137. needs to

  1138. be.

  1139. Last

  1140. week,

  1141. God

  1142. repeated

  1143. his

  1144. promise

  1145. that he

  1146. was going

  1147. to make

  1148. Abraham's

  1149. line,

  1150. his

  1151. offspring,

  1152. like the

  1153. dust of

  1154. the earth.

  1155. What does

  1156. Jacob need

  1157. for his

  1158. offspring to

  1159. be like the

  1160. dust of

  1161. the earth?

  1162. He needs

  1163. some wives.

  1164. He leaves

  1165. this passage

  1166. with two

  1167. wives.

  1168. In the

  1169. midst of

  1170. Jacob's

  1171. failure

  1172. and sin

  1173. and foolishness

  1174. and pride,

  1175. God is

  1176. still at

  1177. work

  1178. refining

  1179. and purifying

  1180. and shaping

  1181. him.

  1182. God is

  1183. still at

  1184. work

  1185. keeping

  1186. his

  1187. promises.

  1188. promises.

  1189. Christian,

  1190. God is

  1191. shaping

  1192. you.

  1193. He's

  1194. keeping

  1195. his

  1196. promises

  1197. to you.

  1198. And when

  1199. you hit up

  1200. against the

  1201. consequences

  1202. of your

  1203. own

  1204. foolishness

  1205. and stupidity,

  1206. it is not

  1207. the end

  1208. of your

  1209. story.

  1210. Because God

  1211. is going

  1212. to weave

  1213. it into

  1214. his bigger

  1215. story.

  1216. And he's

  1217. going to

  1218. use it

  1219. to do

  1220. for you

  1221. everything

  1222. he said

  1223. he would

  1224. do.

  1225. It's

  1226. going to

  1227. be painful.

  1228. The next

  1229. 20 years

  1230. for Jacob

  1231. are not

  1232. easy.

  1233. Your

  1234. sin

  1235. and your

  1236. unbelief

  1237. and your

  1238. failures,

  1239. as I've

  1240. said before,

  1241. cannot

  1242. stop

  1243. the

  1244. freight

  1245. train

  1246. of God's

  1247. kingdom.

  1248. They

  1249. cannot

  1250. get in

  1251. the way

  1252. of God

  1253. keeping

  1254. his

  1255. promises.

  1256. They

  1257. cannot

  1258. prevent

  1259. God's

  1260. work

  1261. in your

  1262. life.

  1263. Because

  1264. God is

  1265. faithful

  1266. to his

  1267. promise.

  1268. If you're

  1269. in Christ,

  1270. he's

  1271. faithful

  1272. to you.

  1273. For the

  1274. Lord

  1275. disciplines

  1276. the one

  1277. he loves

  1278. and chastises

  1279. every

  1280. son

  1281. whom he

  1282. receives.

  1283. And why

  1284. are we

  1285. sons?

  1286. We're

  1287. sons because

  1288. of Christ.

  1289. Remember

  1290. what John

  1291. tells us

  1292. in John

    John 1 chapter mention

  1293. chapter 1,

  1294. but to

  1295. all who

  1296. did receive

  1297. him,

  1298. who believed

  1299. in his

  1300. name,

  1301. he gave

  1302. the right

  1303. to become

  1304. children of

  1305. God,

  1306. who were

  1307. born,

  1308. not of

  1309. blood,

  1310. nor of

  1311. the will

  1312. of the

  1313. flesh,

  1314. nor of

  1315. the will

  1316. of man,

  1317. but of

  1318. God.

  1319. Is that

  1320. you?

  1321. If it

  1322. is,

  1323. God's

  1324. promise

  1325. is true.

  1326. Philippians

    Philippians 1:6

  1327. chapter 1,

  1328. verse 6,

  1329. and I'm

  1330. sure of

  1331. this,

  1332. that he

  1333. who began

  1334. a good

  1335. work in

  1336. you will

  1337. bring it

  1338. to completion

  1339. at the

  1340. day of

  1341. Jesus

  1342. Christ.

  1343. Christ.

  1344. Let's

  1345. pray.

  1346. Our

  1347. Father in

  1348. heaven,

  1349. we do

  1350. praise you

  1351. and we

  1352. thank you

  1353. that you

  1354. seek us

  1355. out,

  1356. even when

  1357. we're

  1358. caught up

  1359. in our

  1360. own sin

  1361. and foolishness

  1362. and pride,

  1363. and that

  1364. you're

  1365. merciful enough

  1366. not to

  1367. leave us

  1368. there,

  1369. that you

  1370. bring

  1371. hardship

  1372. and pain

  1373. to purify

  1374. us and

  1375. refine

  1376. us.

  1377. We ask

  1378. that you

  1379. would give

  1380. us that

  1381. hope in

  1382. the midst

  1383. of our

  1384. lives,

  1385. that we

  1386. would turn

  1387. to you

  1388. and trust

  1389. you no

  1390. matter what,

  1391. knowing that

  1392. you are

  1393. at work

  1394. bringing

  1395. your

  1396. purposes

  1397. to bear,

  1398. to end,

  1399. keeping all

  1400. your promises

  1401. to us.

  1402. We ask

  1403. these things

  1404. in the mighty

  1405. name of

  1406. Jesus Christ.

  1407. Amen.
