  1. We're continuing our series in the book of Genesis.

  2. ! Genesis is the very first book in the Bible.

  3. It's the origin story of God's people, Israel.

  4. And this summer we are in the story of Jacob, found in chapters 25 through 36.

  5. Last week we were in chapter 31, and God tells Jacob it is time for him to return home.

  6. But there's a problem.

  7. The reason that Jacob left home is because his brother Esau wants to kill him.

  8. So Esau's threat from 20 years ago is the tension that drives this narrative.

  9. It doesn't just drive the narrative, though.

  10. It also drives Jacob's dependence on God.

  11. And so that's our focus this morning.

  12. We're going to look at Jacob's dependence on his trust in God.

  13. And in that, Jacob is going to provide us with a master class on prayer.

  14. You may remember our overarching question for the book of Genesis is,

  15. what does it look like to follow God in faith?

  16. This week, one specific element of that, how do we rely on God in prayer?

  17. And so with that, I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 32, starting at verse 1,

    Genesis 32 chapter mention

  18. which you'll find on page 6 of your worship guide.

  19. Remember that Proverbs chapter 30 tells us that every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  20. He's a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  21. And so that's why we read now Genesis 32, starting at verse 1.

  22. Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

  23. And when Jacob saw them, he said, this is God's camp.

  24. So he called the name of that place Mahanaim.

  25. And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau, his brother, in the land of Seir, the country of Edom, instructing them,

  26. Thus you shall say to my lord Esau,

  27. Thus says your servant Jacob,

  28. I have sojourned with Laban and stayed until now.

  29. I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants.

  30. I have sent to tell my lord in order that I may find favor in your sight.

  31. And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying,

  32. We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and there are four hundred men with him.

  33. Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed.

  34. He divided the people who were with him and the flocks and herds and camels into two camps, thinking,

  35. If Esau comes to the one camp and attacks it, then the camp that is left will escape.

  36. Verse 9.

  37. And Jacob said,

  38. O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac,

  39. O Lord who said to me,

  40. Return to your country and to your kindred that I may do you good.

  41. I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant.

  42. For with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps.

  43. Please deliver me from the hand of my brother from the hand of Esau.

  44. For I fear him that he may come and attack me, the mothers, with the children.

  45. But you said,

  46. I will surely do you good and make your offspring as the sand of the sea,

  47. which cannot be numbered for multitude.

  48. Verse 13.

  49. So he stayed there that night, and from what he had with him, he took a present for his brother Esau.

  50. Two hundred female goats and twenty male goats,

  51. two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

  52. thirty milking camels and their calves,

  53. forty cows and ten bulls,

  54. twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

  55. These he handed over to his servants,

  56. every drove by itself,

  57. and said to his servants,

  58. Pass on ahead of me,

  59. and put a space between drove and drove.

  60. He instructed the first,

  61. When Esau my brother meets you and asks you,

  62. To whom do you belong?

  63. Where are you going?

  64. And whose are these ahead of you?

  65. Then you shall say,

  66. They belong to your servant Jacob.

  67. They are a present sent to my lord Esau.

  68. And moreover, he is behind us.

  69. He likewise instructed the second and the third and all who followed the droves.

  70. You shall say the same thing to Esau when you find him.

  71. And you shall say,

  72. Moreover, your servant Jacob is behind us.

  73. For he thought,

  74. I may appease him with the present that goes ahead of me,

  75. and afterward I shall see his face.

  76. Perhaps he will accept me.

  77. So the present passed on ahead of him,

  78. and he himself stayed that night in the camp.

  79. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  80. Our Father in heaven, we do praise you and thank you again this morning

  81. for drawing us together as your people to sing to you and to hear from you.

  82. And we ask that you would honor your promise,

  83. your promise in Isaiah 55,

  84. that your word does not return to you void,

  85. but it accomplishes your purposes.

  86. And so do that this morning.

  87. Use your words in Genesis 32 to accomplish great things in our lives.

  88. Most of all, that you would take our eyes and you'd set them on Jesus Christ,

  89. that our love and our affection for him would grow.

  90. We would increase our reverence and our awe for him,

  91. that you'd lead us in obedience to him.

  92. We ask these things knowing that we don't deserve them and we haven't earned them.

  93. And so instead we ask them in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  94. Amen.

  95. I want you all to remember where we're at in the story.

  96. All the way back in Genesis chapter 25,

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  97. we met two brothers, Jacob and Esau,

  98. who were at odds with each other, even in their mother's womb.

  99. That same chapter 25, we see Jacob steals Esau's birthright.

  100. And then in chapter 27, he goes on to steal Esau's blessing.

  101. And at the end of chapter 27, Esau is so upset

  102. that he threatens to kill Jacob.

  103. So Rebecca, Jacob's mom, tells Jacob, flee to Laban,

  104. my brother, your uncle.

  105. Jacob does that.

  106. And that's where we've been for the last number of weeks.

  107. Jacob spends 20 years with Laban.

  108. While he's there, he gets two wives, both of Laban's daughters, Rachel and Leah.

  109. And we saw he had many sheep that he got from Laban, which caused some tension.

  110. That was part of why he had to leave.

  111. Now he is on the way back.

  112. And as far as we know, Esau's threat is still good.

  113. As far as we know, Esau still wants to kill Jacob.

  114. And so that takes us straight into the story.

  115. Verse one, Jacob went on his way.

  116. That is, he's leaving last week's confrontation with Laban straight into a new problem,

  117. the problem of Esau.

  118. Jacob here is proactive.

  119. So we see in verse three, he sends these messengers ahead of him to announce his coming

  120. to his brother beforehand.

  121. And the message that he sends mentions his great wealth.

  122. This is verse five.

  123. I have oxen, donkeys, flocks, male servants, and female servants.

  124. I have sent to tell my Lord in order that I may find favor in your sight.

  125. Which might seem odd at first.

  126. Hey, brother, I haven't seen you in 20 years.

  127. By the way, just so you know, I'm really rich now.

  128. Indirectly, he's communicating this.

  129. Hey, maybe we could solve this problem with money.

  130. My net worth, you know, my net worth is a lot higher.

  131. It's greater than it was 20 years ago when I left.

  132. So I'm thinking maybe you and I, we can work out a solution where you don't kill me.

  133. Maybe that could be kind of what we work towards.

  134. We could come to a compromise where I'm not murdered.

  135. That's exactly what he does, by the way, at the end of this passage, verses 13 through 21.

  136. He sends these droves of animals onto Esau as gifts.

  137. So that's his first overture.

  138. Okay, I'm coming back to Esau.

  139. Let me be proactive.

  140. Let me figure out how we can thread this needle.

  141. Jacob hears back from the messengers and the news is not good.

  142. In fact, that's an understatement.

  143. It is discouraging.

  144. It is frightening.

  145. This is verse 6.

  146. And the messengers returned to Jacob saying,

  147. We came to your brother Esau and he is coming to meet you.

  148. And there are 400 men with him.

  149. Esau doesn't need 400 men to welcome his brother back.

  150. Okay, this is ominous.

  151. It is threatening.

  152. Commentators point out that this is the size of a militia.

  153. He doesn't receive a response back.

  154. Esau has no word for him.

  155. The messengers just come back and say,

  156. Yeah, Esau and his militia, they're on the march.

  157. So Jacob, his worst fears seem to be coming true.

  158. He does two things.

  159. First, this is verses 7 and 8.

  160. He makes himself a harder target.

  161. He makes himself a harder target by dividing his people, his camps, into two groups.

  162. So if you're a tactics nerd, we might say he has dispersed command posts.

  163. Jacob decides he's going to set up a distributed operation.

  164. And he tells us that explicitly in verse 8.

  165. If Esau comes to the one camp and attacks it,

  166. then the camp that is left.

  167. Jacob will escape.

  168. Jacob's always got a plan.

  169. And if we were dealing with Jacob 20 years ago,

  170. if we were dealing with the Jacob of chapters 25, 26, 27,

  171. that would be it.

  172. Jacob would rely on his skill, on his strategy, on his tactics,

  173. and nothing else.

  174. But you may have noticed something is different this time.

  175. We met Jacob all the way back in chapter 25.

  176. And now, in chapter 32, we have his very first recorded prayer.

  177. Jacob has finally decided it's time to pray to God.

  178. Jacob has finally decided it's time to pray to God.

  179. And this, by the way, is the longest prayer in the entire book of Genesis.

  180. Yes, Jacob has a plan.

  181. Jacob always has a plan.

  182. And we talked about this at length last week.

  183. Jacob has really changed.

  184. He's changed all the way down to his bones.

  185. Yes, Jacob has always been crafty.

  186. Yes, he always has a good tactic.

  187. And this time, this time, Jacob finally prays.

  188. And if you've been taking the story seriously,

  189. if you've been engaged in it and involved with it,

  190. there's this sense in which we should feel a chill here.

  191. That our hair should stand up a little bit

  192. because we know what a big deal this is.

  193. We know how long it's taken, Jacob, to get to this place.

  194. We know the pain and the hardship and the agony

  195. and the sweat and the blood and the tears

  196. for him to finally say,

  197. God, I need your help.

  198. The lesson that God's been teaching Jacob

  199. has finally made it from his head down to his heart.

  200. So verse 7, when he hears about these 400 men,

  201. it tells us he's greatly afraid and distressed,

  202. which makes sense.

  203. And for the first time,

  204. Jacob takes his fear and his distress to God.

  205. Now the request itself,

  206. the request in his prayer is quite simple.

  207. You'll find it in verse 11.

  208. He says,

  209. His request,

  210. his ask for God's help,

  211. that is not what makes this a master class on prayer.

  212. It's actually the three other elements that surround it.

  213. If you look on page 8 of your worship guide,

  214. these are the three elements,

  215. which also happen to be the title of the sermon,

  216. God's command,

  217. God's love,

  218. and God's promise.

  219. First, let's take a look at God's command,

  220. which is where Jacob appeals in verse 9.

  221. And Jacob said,

  222. O God of my father Abraham,

  223. and God of my father Isaac,

  224. O Lord who said to me,

  225. return to your country and to your kindred,

  226. that I may do you good.

  227. So Jacob here is referring to the very beginning of chapter 31

  228. from last week,

  229. where God did not suggest,

  230. but he told,

  231. he commanded Jacob,

  232. return to the land of your fathers

  233. and to your kindred.

  234. And so the idea that he's getting at is this,

  235. hey, Esau,

  236. Esau's coming against me,

  237. and he's coming against me with this militia.

  238. And the reason I'm in this situation,

  239. the reason he's coming at me

  240. and he has his 400 men

  241. is because I'm doing what you told me to do.

  242. I'm following your command.

  243. I'm following you in obedience.

  244. What I'm doing is in line with your will.

  245. You've told me what to do.

  246. You told me to go home.

  247. Now I need your help to do it.

  248. I need you to help me do what you have told me to do.

  249. You've told me to return.

  250. Now I'm asking you to show your power.

  251. And not just to show your power in general,

  252. to show your power specifically

  253. as I'm doing exactly what you told me to do.

  254. It's a way of praying

  255. that is called arguing in prayer.

  256. You'll see this on the very back of your worship guide,

  257. this quote,

  258. speaking of the Puritans.

  259. So the Puritans used to speak rather grandly

  260. about using argument in prayer.

  261. But this they did not mean

  262. pressing God to fall in line

  263. with their own desires.

  264. My will be done.

  265. What they meant was telling God

  266. why what we have asked for

  267. seems to be for the best

  268. in light of what we know

  269. God's own goals to be.

  270. In other words,

  271. God, this is what you said you wanted.

  272. This is what you say is good

  273. and beautiful and true

  274. and I'm pursuing after that.

  275. So hear, hear and answer my prayer.

  276. I'm praying for you to do what has to be done

  277. for your command to be obeyed.

  278. A number of years ago,

  279. when I was in my early 30s,

  280. I had a season of prayer that went like this.

  281. Lord, I know that you have called me

  282. to lead this church.

  283. You've made it clear.

  284. You've made it clear that that's your will

  285. and you've made that clear in a variety of ways.

  286. But there's a problem here, God.

  287. And the problem is that I'm actually

  288. not experienced enough to do that.

  289. I'm not wise enough or old enough.

  290. And I actually don't know what I'm doing.

  291. But you decided this was a good idea.

  292. I need your help.

  293. You're going to have to show up.

  294. You're going to have to show up

  295. in a supernatural way

  296. by your spirit

  297. to give me the wisdom that I need

  298. through mentors and resources

  299. by your work in me.

  300. You've said that you empower

  301. and enable what you command.

  302. Please do it.

  303. You've told me what to do.

  304. Now I need your help

  305. to actually follow through.

  306. I'm not in my early 30s anymore.

  307. I actually still need God's power

  308. and help and wisdom.

  309. We never outgrow our helplessness

  310. before God.

  311. Now I will say this just as an aside.

  312. You know, here we see Jacob grow

  313. in his dependence as he ages.

  314. We also need to be cautious, though,

  315. about the opposite.

  316. There's times when we're young

  317. and inexperienced.

  318. We can be so dependent on God

  319. in prayer, right?

  320. And as we get experience

  321. and accomplishments behind us,

  322. we think, oh, I got this.

  323. I know what to do.

  324. And yet our need for God's help

  325. is just as great as it was before.

  326. Right?

  327. So this can move in both directions.

  328. Now, God has not necessarily

  329. called you to lead a church.

  330. For you, arguing in prayer

  331. could look like this.

  332. Lord, you've told us,

  333. you've told me in Psalm 133,

  334. you've told us in 1 Timothy 2

  335. that the Christian community,

  336. it's supposed to be a place of unity.

  337. And man, we're really having

  338. a hard time getting along.

  339. Help us.

  340. You've said what you want is unity,

  341. so help us do it.

  342. You've said in Colossians 3,

  343. if we're at work with our employer,

  344. that whatever we do,

  345. we work heartily for the Lord

  346. and not for men.

  347. Lord, I can't do that on my own.

  348. I need you to give me

  349. the perseverance and patience

  350. and joy to be an employee like that.

  351. This is your will.

  352. This is what you've said you want.

  353. Come and help us do it.

  354. Lord, you've said in Ephesians 5

  355. that our marriage should be

  356. this picture of the gospel,

  357. of the relationship

  358. between Christ and his church,

  359. and we want our marriage

  360. to be like that.

  361. But outside of your work,

  362. outside of your spirit,

  363. it is so far less.

  364. Help us.

  365. Make it a display

  366. of your gospel for the world.

  367. Arguing with God

  368. could look like this.

  369. Lord, in Malachi 2,

  370. you told us you want

  371. Christian marriages

  372. to lead to godly children.

  373. We don't actually have

  374. the wisdom we need to do that.

  375. We don't have the wisdom

  376. that we need to raise our kids

  377. to know and love God.

  378. And you know what?

  379. Even if we did have the wisdom,

  380. we actually don't have the power.

  381. We're not powerful enough

  382. to change and shape and form

  383. our children's hearts.

  384. We need you to do it.

  385. We need you to show up.

  386. We need your help.

  387. Use us as your instruments.

  388. Christian,

  389. you can pray to God like that.

  390. In fact, I'll put it more strongly.

  391. You should pray to God like that.

  392. Lord, I am praying

  393. for what you have said you want.

  394. Please show up.

  395. By the way, this shapes our prayers

  396. because we have to ask ourselves,

  397. are we actually praying

  398. in line with the Lord's prayer?

  399. Can we say that we're praying

  400. Matthew 6, verse 10?

    Matthew 6:10

  401. Your kingdom come,

  402. your will be done

  403. on earth as it is in heaven.

  404. So Jacob has appealed

  405. to God's commands.

  406. Look, you told me to return.

  407. I need you to show up.

  408. Next, Jacob appeals to God's love.

  409. This is verse 10.

  410. I am not worthy of the least

  411. of all the deeds of steadfast love

  412. and all the faithfulness

  413. that you have shown to your servant.

  414. For with only my staff,

  415. I crossed this Jordan

  416. and now I have become two camps.

  417. This word steadfast love

  418. from verse 10 shows up

  419. in the Old Testament

  420. over and over again

  421. to communicate God's commitment

  422. to his people.

  423. And the best definition I know of

  424. comes from the Children's Storybook Bible,

  425. which describes God's steadfast love

  426. in this way,

  427. his never stopping,

  428. never giving up,

  429. unbreaking,

  430. always and forever love.

  431. God's steadfast love

  432. is his never stopping,

  433. never giving up,

  434. unbreaking,

  435. always and forever love.

  436. Jacob doesn't base his request

  437. on his own worthiness

  438. or merit or skill.

  439. He doesn't say,

  440. God, look how great I've been.

  441. No, in fact, the opposite.

  442. Again, this is verse 10.

  443. He says, I am not worthy.

  444. Remember Jacob

  445. when he shows up to the well

  446. and he meets Rachel

  447. and he moves that stone

  448. single-handedly

  449. that it took a bunch of people

  450. to move,

  451. but he does it by himself

  452. because he's so jacked.

  453. Jacob thought he was

  454. really hot stuff.

  455. And that's probably why

  456. he didn't pray.

  457. He didn't pray.

  458. It has taken Jacob years,

  459. years,

  460. to learn his helplessness

  461. and God's power.

  462. It's taken Jacob years

  463. to finally say,

  464. I am not worthy.

  465. God has had to push him

  466. to the end of himself

  467. where his skills

  468. and his ability

  469. and his tactics

  470. and his strategies

  471. are not enough.

  472. Calling on God's mercy,

  473. that's prayer.

  474. That's why we pray

  475. in Jesus' name.

  476. That's why you'll often

  477. hear me say,

  478. hey, we haven't earned

  479. these things

  480. and we don't deserve them.

  481. But we ask for them

  482. in Jesus' name.

  483. Remember Jesus' words

  484. in Mark chapter 2.

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  485. Jesus said to them,

  486. those who are well

  487. have no need of a physician,

  488. but those who are sick.

  489. I came not to call

  490. the righteous,

  491. but sinners.

  492. sinners do.

  493. Those who think

  494. that they are righteous

  495. have no need for prayer.

  496. Sinners do.

  497. Those who think

  498. their own tactics

  499. and strategies

  500. and intelligence

  501. are enough

  502. will not turn

  503. to God in prayer.

  504. those who have realized

  505. they are not hot stuff

  506. will.

  507. The Apostle Paul

  508. learned that as well.

  509. He tells us

  510. in 2 Corinthians chapter 12,

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  511. 12,

  512. but he said to me,

  513. that is God said to him,

  514. my grace is sufficient

  515. for you.

  516. My power is made

  517. perfect in weakness.

  518. Therefore,

  519. I will boast

  520. all the more gladly

  521. of my weaknesses

  522. so that the power

  523. of Christ

  524. may rest

  525. upon you.

  526. Do you want

  527. the power

  528. of Christ

  529. to rest

  530. upon you?

  531. Comes in weakness.

  532. Comes in

  533. admitting

  534. your helplessness

  535. and your need.

  536. near the end

  537. of his life,

  538. there was an interview

  539. with the famous

  540. pastor,

  541. Timothy Keller,

  542. about his decades

  543. of ministry,

  544. and the interviewer

  545. asked him this,

  546. looking back

  547. over your nearly

  548. 50 years

  549. in Christian ministry,

  550. what's something

  551. you regret?

  552. What's something

  553. you wish

  554. you had done

  555. differently?

  556. And he said,

  557. oh,

  558. that's easy.

  559. I wish

  560. I'd prayed

  561. more.

  562. He's one of the

  563. most successful

  564. pastors in his

  565. generation.

  566. It can take

  567. a lifetime

  568. to learn

  569. how helpless

  570. we are.

  571. It can take

  572. a lifetime

  573. to learn

  574. that everything

  575. comes from

  576. God's

  577. mercy.

  578. God's

  579. God's

  580. God's

  581. love.

  582. It can take

  583. to learn

  584. everything.

  585. It can take

  586. a lifetime

  587. that everything

  588. easier.

  589. Jacob appeals

  590. to God's

  591. command.

  592. He appeals

  593. to God's

  594. love.

  595. And then

  596. finally,

  597. he appeals

  598. to God's

  599. promise.

  600. It is not

  601. only that God

  602. has commanded

  603. Jacob to return,

  604. he's also

  605. promised to

  606. do him

  607. good.

  608. We see this

  609. first in

  610. verse 9.

  611. He says,

  612. you told me

  613. return to

  614. your country

  615. and to

  616. your kindred

  617. that I

  618. may do

  619. you good.

  620. And then

  621. it comes

  622. in a

  623. fuller form

  624. in verse 12.

  625. But you

  626. said,

  627. I will

  628. surely do

  629. you good

  630. and make

  631. your offspring

  632. as the

  633. sand of

  634. the sea

  635. which cannot

  636. be numbered

  637. for multitude.

  638. Okay,

  639. so Lord,

  640. you promised

  641. to do me

  642. good,

  643. and how

  644. are you

  645. going to

  646. do me

  647. good if

  648. these 400

  649. men wipe

  650. me and

  651. my family

  652. out?

  653. I mean,

  654. it doesn't

  655. seem like

  656. that's

  657. very good.

  658. And even

  659. more than

  660. that,

  661. you said

  662. you've

  663. promised

  664. offspring

  665. as the

  666. sand of

  667. the sea.

  668. Now,

  669. how am I

  670. supposed to

  671. have offspring

  672. as the

  673. sand of

  674. the sea

  675. if we're

  676. all killed?

  677. Those two

  678. things don't

  679. really seem

  680. to go

  681. together,

  682. right?

  683. How does

  684. that happen

  685. if Esau

  686. slaughters

  687. us?

  688. So protect

  689. us because

  690. of your

  691. promise.

  692. Your promise

  693. for good,

  694. your promise

  695. for

  696. offspring.

  697. Christian,

  698. you can

  699. plead God's

  700. promises as

  701. well.

  702. Lord, you

  703. told us in

  704. James 1

    James 1:5

  705. verse 5

  706. that those

  707. who ask

  708. for wisdom

  709. will receive

  710. it.

  711. Well, we

  712. really need

  713. some wisdom

  714. right now.

  715. So we're

  716. asking you

  717. for it.

  718. Honor your

  719. promise.

  720. Lord, you

  721. told us in

  722. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10:13

  723. chapter 10

  724. verse 13

  725. that there's

  726. no temptation

  727. that will

  728. come to us

  729. for which you

  730. don't provide

  731. a way out.

  732. Well, I'm

  733. overwhelmed by

  734. temptation right

  735. now and I

  736. need a way

  737. out.

  738. Honor your

  739. promise.

  740. Help.

  741. Show me

  742. the way

  743. to escape.

  744. Lord, you

  745. promised us in

  746. Psalm 34

    Psalms 34:18

  747. verse 18

  748. that you

  749. are near to

  750. the broken

  751. hearted and

  752. you save

  753. the crushed

  754. in spirit.

  755. And we're in

  756. the hospital

  757. right now

  758. and we feel

  759. alone and

  760. abandoned.

  761. Honor the

  762. promise.

  763. Be near to

  764. us.

  765. Give us a

  766. sense of your

  767. presence.

  768. Do what you

  769. talk about in

  770. Romans chapter 5

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  771. that the love

  772. of God will

  773. be poured out

  774. into our

  775. hearts by

  776. the Holy

  777. Spirit.

  778. Lord, you

  779. promised us in

  780. Philippians chapter

    Philippians 4:6

  781. 4 verses 6

  782. and 7 that if

  783. we bring our

  784. anxieties to

  785. you in prayer,

  786. you will give

  787. us the peace

  788. that passes

  789. understanding that

  790. will guard our

  791. hearts and our

  792. minds in Christ

  793. Jesus.

  794. Lord, we're

  795. drowning in

  796. fear and

  797. we're bringing

  798. that to you.

  799. Honor the

  800. promise.

  801. Give us the

  802. peace that

  803. passes

  804. understanding.

  805. Lord, you've

  806. promised us in

  807. Psalm 23

    Psalms 23:6

  808. verse 6 that

  809. goodness and

  810. mercy will

  811. follow us all

  812. the days of

  813. our lives.

  814. And it sure

  815. seems like the

  816. darkness is

  817. winning.

  818. Feels like the

  819. lights are

  820. dimming.

  821. Honor your

  822. promise.

  823. Show us your

  824. goodness and

  825. your mercy.

  826. Lord, you've

  827. told us in

  828. James chapter

    James 4:7

  829. 4 verse 7

  830. that if we

  831. resist the

  832. devil, he

  833. will flee from

  834. us and we

  835. are resisting.

  836. Honor your

  837. promise.

  838. Do what you

  839. said you would

  840. do.

  841. Restrain the

  842. evil one.

  843. Protect your

  844. people.

  845. Lord, you've

  846. told us in

  847. Isaiah 55 that

  848. your word will

  849. not return to

  850. you empty, but

  851. it will accomplish

  852. your purposes.

  853. promises.

  854. We're begging

  855. you.

  856. Use your word in

  857. a powerful way in

  858. our lives.

  859. Honor the

  860. promise.

  861. Do great

  862. things in us

  863. by your word.

  864. Do you want to

  865. really pray?

  866. Plead the

  867. promises of

  868. God.

  869. And why

  870. should God

  871. answer your

  872. prayer?

  873. Paul tells

  874. us in 2

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  875. Corinthians

  876. chapter 1, he

  877. says, all the

  878. promises of

  879. God find

  880. their yes and

  881. amen in

  882. Jesus Christ.

  883. That is, you're

  884. not pleading on

  885. behalf of your

  886. merit.

  887. You're not

  888. pleading that

  889. you deserve

  890. anything.

  891. No, you're

  892. pleading because

  893. Jesus represents

  894. you before God

  895. the Father and

  896. that you've been

  897. adopted as one

  898. of his sons or

  899. his daughter, as

  900. we talked about in

  901. our confession of

  902. faith, which means

  903. you don't just have

  904. forgiveness of

  905. sins, but you

  906. have access to

  907. the throne room

  908. of God.

  909. And you plead

  910. God's promises

  911. based on what

  912. Jesus has done

  913. for you.

  914. This is in

  915. page 7 of your

  916. worship guide.

  917. Jesus'

  918. sinless life and

  919. sin-bearing

  920. death provide

  921. the meritorious

  922. basis upon

  923. which any

  924. promise is

  925. made good

  926. to us.

  927. Apart from

  928. Christ, we

  929. have no right

  930. to any of

  931. God's promises,

  932. but through

  933. our union

  934. with Christ,

  935. we have access

  936. to all

  937. of them.

  938. Christian,

  939. there is a

  940. difference.

  941. in fact,

  942. there is a

  943. world of

  944. difference

  945. between simply

  946. listing our

  947. requests to

  948. God and

  949. wrestling with

  950. God in

  951. prayer,

  952. naming God's

  953. will, his

  954. commands,

  955. acknowledging our

  956. need, our

  957. helplessness,

  958. claiming God's

  959. mercy through

  960. Jesus Christ,

  961. claiming God's

  962. promises that

  963. are ours because

  964. of Jesus.

  965. It's Jesus who

  966. tells us this in

  967. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  968. 7,

  969. ask and it

  970. will be given

  971. to you.

  972. Seek and

  973. you will find.

  974. Knock and

  975. it will be

  976. opened to

  977. you.

  978. For

  979. everyone who

  980. asks,

  981. receives,

  982. and the

  983. one who

  984. seeks,

  985. finds,

  986. and to

  987. the one

  988. who knocks,

  989. it will

  990. be opened.

  991. Or which

  992. one of you,

  993. if his son

  994. asks him for

  995. bread,

  996. will give him

  997. a stone?

  998. Or if he

  999. asks for a

  1000. fish,

  1001. will give him

  1002. a serpent?

  1003. If you then,

  1004. who are evil,

  1005. know how to

  1006. give good

  1007. gifts to your

  1008. children,

  1009. how much

  1010. more will

  1011. your Father

  1012. who is in

  1013. heaven give

  1014. good things

  1015. to those

  1016. who ask

  1017. him?

  1018. Let's

  1019. pray.

  1020. Our

  1021. Father in

  1022. heaven,

  1023. we do

  1024. praise you

  1025. and thank you

  1026. for the

  1027. embarrassment

  1028. of riches

  1029. that are

  1030. ours in

  1031. Jesus Christ.

  1032. We ask

  1033. that you

  1034. would teach

  1035. us to

  1036. pray,

  1037. that we

  1038. pray in

  1039. line with

  1040. your will,

  1041. we come

  1042. admitting our

  1043. helplessness

  1044. and our

  1045. need before

  1046. you,

  1047. and that we

  1048. would set

  1049. our lives

  1050. on your

  1051. promises.

  1052. promises.

  1053. We ask

  1054. all of

  1055. these

  1056. things in

  1057. Jesus'

  1058. name,

  1059. amen.
