  1. We are starting series going through the book of Jonah, if you guys want to turn there.

  2. If you ask a group of kids to tell a story from the Bible, chances are Jonah is going to be one of those stories.

  3. The book of Jonah is an exciting book with unbelievable characters and situations.

  4. We have God.

  5. We have Jonah, the horrible missionary.

  6. We have God's mission.

  7. We have a storm.

  8. We've got Jonah being swallowed by a big fish.

  9. We have the fact that Jonah lives in a big fish for three days.

  10. We have Jonah being stewed out onto dry land.

  11. We've got a plant that God provides for Jonah.

  12. There are just some extreme situations to this book.

  13. With all the unbelievable things, this book is a great story of redemption.

  14. In fact, each chapter, four chapters, each chapter has a different story of redemption in it.

  15. It's a great story of adventure, of God's power, a great story of God's sovereignty, a great story of the human heart, who we really are.

  16. It's a great missionary story.

  17. With God's mercy shown to Jonah, a Jew, to the Ninevites, Gentiles, and to sailors who are pagans.

  18. It's a great story.

  19. And a lot of times with great stories, we kind of dismiss it for Sunday school lesson material.

  20. But this is a great story for all of us this morning.

  21. So I'm going to read the entire book.

  22. And then we'll dig into the first five verses.

  23. Verse 1.

  24. Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying,

  25. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it, for their evil has come up before me.

  26. But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

  27. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish.

  28. So he paid the fare and went on board to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.

  29. But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship threatened to break up.

  30. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his God.

  31. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them.

  32. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship, and had lain down and was fast asleep.

  33. So the captain came to him and said to him,

  34. What do you mean, you sleeper?

  35. Arise, call out to your God.

  36. Perhaps the God will give a thought to us that we may not perish.

  37. And they said to one another, Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  38. So they cast lots, and a lot fell on Jonah.

  39. Then they said to him, Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  40. What is your occupation?

  41. And where do you come from?

  42. What is your country?

  43. And of what people are you?

  44. And he said to them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.

  45. Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, What is this that you have done?

  46. For the men knew that he was fleeing for the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.

  47. Then they said to him, What shall we do to you that the sea may quiet down for us?

  48. For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

  49. He said to them, Pick me up, and hurl me into the sea.

  50. Then the sea will quiet down for you.

  51. For I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.

  52. Nevertheless, the men rode hard to get back to dry land, but they could not.

  53. For the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

  54. Therefore they called out to the Lord, O Lord, let us not perish for this man's life,

  55. and lay not on us innocent blood.

  56. For you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.

  57. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.

  58. Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

  59. And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah.

  60. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

  61. Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying,

  62. I called out to the Lord out of my distress, and he answered me.

  63. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.

  64. For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me.

  65. All your waves and your billows passed over me.

  66. Then I said, I am driven away from your sight.

  67. Yet I shall again look upon your holy temple.

  68. The waters closed in over me to take my life.

  69. The deep surrounded me.

  70. Weeds were wrapped about my head at the roots of the mountains.

  71. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever.

  72. Yet you brought me up my life from the pit.

  73. Brought up my life from the pit.

  74. Oh Lord, my God.

  75. When my life was fading away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you into your holy temple.

  76. Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love.

  77. But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you what I have vowed I will pay.

  78. Today, salvation belongs to the Lord.

  79. And the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto the dry land.

  80. Then the word came to Jonah.

  81. Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, Arise.

  82. Go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.

  83. So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord.

  84. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city.

  85. Three days' journey in breadth.

  86. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey, and he called out,

  87. Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

  88. And the people of Nineveh believed God.

  89. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

  90. Then the word reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, removed his robe,

  91. covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.

  92. As he issued a proclamation and published through Nineveh,

  93. by the decree of the king and his nobles,

  94. let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything.

  95. Let them not feed or drink water, but let them and beasts,

  96. covered with sackcloth, and let them call out mightily to God.

  97. Let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.

  98. Who knows?

  99. God may turn and relent and turn from his fierce anger,

  100. so that we may not perish.

  101. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil way,

  102. God relented of the disaster that he had said he would do to them,

  103. and he did not do it.

  104. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry.

  105. And he prayed to the Lord and said,

  106. O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country?

  107. That this is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish?

  108. For I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful,

  109. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love,

  110. and relenting from disaster.

  111. Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me,

  112. for it is better for me to die than to live.

  113. And the Lord said, Do you do well to be angry?

  114. Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city

  115. and made a booth for himself there.

  116. He sat under it in the shade,

  117. till he should see what would become of the city.

  118. Now the Lord appointed a plant and made it come up over Jonah,

  119. that it might be a shade over his head to save him from his discomfort.

  120. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant.

  121. But when dawn came up the next day,

  122. God appointed a worm that attacked the plant so that it withered.

  123. When the sun rose, God appointed a scorching east wind,

  124. and the sun beat down on the head of Jonah so that he was faint.

  125. And he asked that he might die and said,

  126. It is better for me to die than to live.

  127. But God said to Jonah,

  128. Do you do well to be angry for the plant?

  129. And he said, Yes, I do.

  130. Well, to be angry, angry enough to die.

  131. And the Lord said,

  132. You pity the plant for which you did not labor,

  133. nor did you make it grow which came into being in a night

  134. and perished in a night.

  135. And should not I pity Nineveh,

  136. that great city,

  137. in which there are more than 120,000 persons

  138. who do not know their right hand from their left,

  139. and also much cattle.

  140. So, a little bit of background to the book of Jonah.

  141. The book takes place in the 8th century B.C.

  142. Nineveh was a capital of Assyria.

  143. They're not sure if it was the capital,

  144. but it was definitely a capital.

  145. There were a lot of nobles who lived in this city.

  146. And it was a great city.

  147. Large city.

  148. And the Assyrians were well known by all of Israel

  149. for their brutality and cruelty.

  150. They were known to tear off lips and hands of their victims.

  151. Lips and hands.

  152. The lion's den.

  153. Torture were regular practices for this brutal people.

  154. Historically speaking,

  155. Jonah is a prophet of God.

  156. This isn't the first time that the Word of the Lord came to Jonah.

  157. In fact, we see in 2 Kings,

  158. where God spoke and used Jonah to speak to the people of Israel.

  159. So, Jonah is not new to hearing the Word of the Lord.

  160. This book is very important to us.

  161. Not because of the story,

  162. although that is important.

  163. It's important because Jesus Himself

  164. spoke about Jonah and the big fish.

  165. Jesus Himself spoke and said that this happened.

  166. And if Jesus said it,

  167. and these things did not happen,

  168. then we must discount the rest of the Scripture

  169. and just go on our merry way

  170. and forget about this Christianity thing.

  171. C.S. Lewis wrote it this way.

  172. He says,

  173. A man who was merely a man

  174. and said the sort of things Jesus said

  175. would not be a great moral teacher.

  176. He would either be a lunatic

  177. on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg

  178. or else he would be the devil of hell.

  179. You must make your choice.

  180. Either this man was and is the Son of God

  181. or else a madman or something worse.

  182. You can shut him up for a fool.

  183. You can spit at him and kill him as a demon.

  184. Or you can fall at his feet

  185. and call him Lord and God.

  186. The idea there is that

  187. what Jesus speaks and has spoken

  188. has to happen,

  189. has to be real.

  190. And so Jonah,

  191. spoken from God's mouth in Matthew 12,

  192. has to have happened.

  193. Which makes our time studying it

  194. all the more important.

  195. See, in it we learn about God.

  196. We learn about God's desires.

  197. We learn about His characteristics.

  198. We also learn,

  199. as if we didn't know already,

  200. ourselves,

  201. the heart of man.

  202. And it's always good to remind ourselves

  203. who we are

  204. or who we were.

  205. Because,

  206. because who we were

  207. and who we are

  208. always elevates who Christ is

  209. if we're Christians,

  210. if we're believers.

  211. If we truly look and see who we were

  212. and what Christ did,

  213. then it elevates Christ.

  214. And that makes this book

  215. very important.

  216. I've titled this message,

  217. God's Mission Versus Man's Heart.

  218. And if you know anything about the Bible,

  219. then you know that God trumps man's heart.

  220. God always trumps.

  221. As Creator,

  222. as Mercy Giver,

  223. as Holy,

  224. as Justice Maker,

  225. He trumps us.

  226. But the book of Jonah,

  227. as we've just read,

  228. is filled with great hope.

  229. Great hope

  230. for us in the world.

  231. And that excites me.

  232. And that should excite you as well.

  233. There are three points

  234. to the sermon this morning.

  235. And each point has two parts.

  236. So don't get confused.

  237. We have God speaks

  238. and Jonah hears.

  239. We have God's message

  240. and Jonah's reaction.

  241. We have God's response

  242. and Jonah's pretense.

  243. I want to make it clear

  244. that God's mission,

  245. and this is going to be repeated

  246. as we go through this book,

  247. God's mission is completely

  248. dependent upon God.

  249. Not dependent upon you,

  250. not dependent upon me,

  251. not dependent upon Jonah.

  252. It is dependent upon God.

  253. What God wants to do,

  254. what He desires,

  255. it happens.

  256. What He creates,

  257. it becomes.

  258. He gives a mission

  259. and it happens.

  260. So God's sovereignty

  261. is clearly displayed

  262. in the book of Jonah.

  263. All right,

  264. so the first point this morning.

  265. God speaks

  266. and Jonah hears.

  267. Verse 1.

  268. It says,

  269. Now the word of the Lord

  270. came to Jonah,

  271. the son of Amittai.

  272. We have the two characters.

  273. We have God,

  274. we have the Lord,

  275. and we have Jonah.

  276. God speaks

  277. and Jonah hears.

  278. As I've said already,

  279. this is not the first time

  280. that God spoke to Jonah.

  281. In 2 Kings 14,

  282. we have the only other place

  283. where Jonah is mentioned

  284. in all of Scripture.

  285. And God has spoken

  286. through Jonah

  287. to the people of Israel.

  288. Now in my opinion,

  289. before studying this book,

  290. I thought Jonah

  291. was just a goober.

  292. I thought he was an idiot.

  293. That God spoke to him clearly,

  294. however that was.

  295. Voice, word,

  296. picture in the sky,

  297. who knows?

  298. It doesn't tell us.

  299. But God spoke to him clearly,

  300. and he goes the opposite direction.

  301. What a fool!

  302. But honestly,

  303. he's quite different than that.

  304. Because in 2 Kings,

  305. he was already a prophet,

  306. and the word of the Lord

  307. came to him.

  308. And he spoke to an evil king,

  309. an evil Israel.

  310. Israel was not godly.

  311. They were not God-fearing

  312. at this time.

  313. So he speaks

  314. to the people of Israel,

  315. and King Jeroboam

  316. does exactly what Jonah says.

  317. And God blesses Israel.

  318. In fact,

  319. the land of Israel

  320. had grown under this king

  321. to the size that it originally was

  322. under King Solomon,

  323. which was the biggest

  324. that it had been up to that point.

  325. So God used Jonah

  326. to bless Israel.

  327. There's a chance,

  328. a great chance,

  329. that Jonah was wealthy

  330. and popular.

  331. That maybe he was hero-like

  332. to the people of Israel.

  333. So he was familiar

  334. with God's voice.

  335. He knew

  336. if God spoke to him.

  337. As we know,

  338. Jonah didn't really hear God,

  339. though, right?

  340. In Hebrew,

  341. in Deuteronomy 6,

  342. we have the,

  343. it's called the Shema.

  344. Hear, O Israel,

  345. the Lord is one.

  346. In Hebrew,

  347. obedience is always connected

  348. with hearing.

  349. Kind of like us today.

  350. Sometimes we say,

  351. I listened,

  352. but I didn't hear you.

  353. I heard the noise,

  354. but I didn't really hear you.

  355. In Hebrew,

  356. obedience

  357. was always connected

  358. with hearing.

  359. So that,

  360. if you didn't obey

  361. what was told to you,

  362. then clearly you didn't hear.

  363. If you didn't do

  364. what God had said,

  365. then you didn't really hear.

  366. Jonah

  367. didn't really hear.

  368. He listened.

  369. He picked out

  370. what he wanted to.

  371. Go to Nineveh.

  372. Oh,

  373. I'm going to go the other way.

  374. He didn't hear

  375. what God had said.

  376. And I think

  377. it happens to us

  378. a lot.

  379. We read Scripture.

  380. We read the Word of God.

  381. We listen.

  382. But do we really hear?

  383. Do we really follow

  384. what we've read

  385. with obedience?

  386. So God spoke.

  387. The Word of the Lord

  388. came to Jonah.

  389. And Jonah

  390. listened.

  391. The Word of the Lord

  392. fell on his ears,

  393. but he did not hear.

  394. All right,

  395. so that's the first one.

  396. The next two points

  397. we're going to spend

  398. a little more time with.

  399. So that was

  400. God speaks

  401. and Jonah hears.

  402. Verse 1

  403. clearly tells us

  404. the two characters

  405. in this spot.

  406. Next we have

  407. God's message

  408. and Jonah's reaction.

  409. Verse 2

  410. tells us

  411. God's message.

  412. Arise,

  413. go to Nineveh,

  414. that great city,

  415. and call out against it

  416. for their evil

  417. has come up

  418. before me.

  419. Clearly,

  420. we don't have

  421. the exact message

  422. of what Jonah

  423. was supposed to say.

  424. We see what he said

  425. in chapter 3

  426. where he said,

  427. 40 days

  428. and Nineveh

  429. shall be overthrown.

  430. Not a real

  431. articulate message.

  432. Probably

  433. a little Jonah

  434. sided there.

  435. We have not been,

  436. it has not been

  437. clearly told to us,

  438. but what we do know

  439. is that

  440. Nineveh

  441. heard the message.

  442. They repented.

  443. They repented

  444. and they started

  445. worshipping

  446. the Lord,

  447. Yahweh.

  448. It was a call

  449. to repentance,

  450. to turn from their sin

  451. and turn towards God.

  452. And it's the message

  453. that Peter preached

  454. at Pentecost.

  455. It's the message

  456. that Paul preaches.

  457. It's the message

  458. that Jesus preached.

  459. It is the story

  460. of the Bible.

  461. God's redemption

  462. to a repentant

  463. people.

  464. When Martin Luther

  465. nailed the 95 Theses

  466. to the church

  467. in Wittenberg,

  468. number one

  469. on his list,

  470. the Christian life

  471. is to be a life

  472. of repentance.

  473. Because that is

  474. the message

  475. of Scripture.

  476. Scripture.

  477. This is where we

  478. stand.

  479. This is the message

  480. to us.

  481. In this story,

  482. this is where we

  483. sit.

  484. We must be a

  485. people of repentance.

  486. This message is not

  487. just to Nineveh,

  488. it is to us.

  489. Look at verse 2

  490. again.

  491. Look at it.

  492. It starts with two

  493. commands.

  494. Arise,

  495. go.

  496. Go.

  497. To give a sense

  498. of urgency.

  499. Not just get up

  500. at your leisure,

  501. make your way

  502. over to Nineveh.

  503. Arise and go.

  504. In other words,

  505. hear your orders,

  506. now move.

  507. Hear your orders,

  508. now go.

  509. As I've talked

  510. about the Assyrians,

  511. and I've talked

  512. about the people

  513. of Nineveh,

  514. this would be

  515. like in 1944,

  516. for God to tell

  517. you to go to

  518. Nazi Germany

  519. and preach

  520. against Hitler

  521. and the people

  522. of Germany

  523. who are buying

  524. into the Nazi

  525. regime.

  526. That's probably

  527. pretty accurate.

  528. We would say,

  529. that's crazy.

  530. What would make

  531. it worse is if

  532. you were Jewish

  533. and God told you

  534. to go do that.

  535. That would be

  536. even better.

  537. God has sent

  538. me to tell you,

  539. Hitler,

  540. that you are

  541. going to hell

  542. unless you repent.

  543. Five seconds

  544. maybe,

  545. you'd be dead.

  546. Unless God

  547. had a plan

  548. for the Nazi

  549. Germany,

  550. like he has

  551. here for the

  552. Ninevites.

  553. You remember

  554. when you were

  555. a child and

  556. you played

  557. hide and seek?

  558. You know,

  559. if somebody

  560. was trying to

  561. find you and

  562. you happened

  563. to be just

  564. around the

  565. corner,

  566. you maybe

  567. would close

  568. your eyes

  569. because,

  570. you know,

  571. if they

  572. couldn't see

  573. you,

  574. or if you

  575. couldn't see

  576. them,

  577. they couldn't

  578. see you.

  579. You guys

  580. relate to that?

  581. We do it in

  582. class and in

  583. prayer time,

  584. you know,

  585. when you

  586. don't want

  587. to be called,

  588. we put our

  589. heads down.

  590. No,

  591. I really

  592. don't want

  593. to pray,

  594. so I'm

  595. just going

  596. to,

  597. I can't

  598. see him,

  599. he can't

  600. see me.

  601. We do

  602. that.

  603. We,

  604. as people,

  605. tend to take

  606. that same

  607. practice

  608. and apply

  609. it to our

  610. theology.

  611. We apply

  612. it to what

  613. we think

  614. God is.

  615. We think

  616. that if we're

  617. not looking

  618. at God,

  619. if our

  620. eyes are

  621. closed,

  622. that he

  623. doesn't

  624. exist,

  625. or that he's

  626. not paying

  627. attention,

  628. or he

  629. doesn't

  630. care.

  631. If we

  632. just ignore

  633. him,

  634. and this

  635. isn't just

  636. non-Christians,

  637. this is

  638. believers,

  639. too.

  640. These are

  641. Christians who

  642. do this.

  643. I do

  644. this.

  645. You know

  646. the difference

  647. between a

  648. Christian and

  649. a non-Christian

  650. here?

  651. Is that the

  652. Christian knows

  653. he's doing

  654. it.

  655. The non-Christian

  656. has no idea.

  657. And that's

  658. what the

  659. Ninevites

  660. were doing.

  661. They were

  662. existing with

  663. their eyes

  664. closed,

  665. so to speak.

  666. They were

  667. existing without

  668. knowing God's

  669. God existed,

  670. without knowing

  671. that he was

  672. watching them.

  673. And honestly,

  674. this is the

  675. reason why

  676. Jonah didn't

  677. want to go.

  678. Chapter 4

  679. tells us he

  680. didn't want to

  681. go because

  682. God was going

  683. to show mercy

  684. on them.

  685. But think

  686. about where

  687. Jonah's coming

  688. from.

  689. He's coming

  690. from Israel,

  691. who are

  692. practicing evil

  693. things.

  694. Idol

  695. worship.

  696. their being

  697. evil.

  698. So,

  699. if God

  700. showed mercy

  701. on the

  702. pagans of

  703. Nineveh,

  704. how much

  705. greater is

  706. the judgment

  707. going to be

  708. on a people

  709. of Israel

  710. who knew

  711. God existed,

  712. who knows

  713. that God

  714. is there?

  715. How much

  716. greater is

  717. that judgment

  718. going to be?

  719. And for us,

  720. it's the same

  721. thing.

  722. It's scary.

  723. If we continue

  724. to go on,

  725. if we are

  726. children of

  727. God,

  728. and we

  729. continue to

  730. practice

  731. immorality,

  732. if we continue

  733. to be evil

  734. and deny

  735. the existence

  736. of God,

  737. because we

  738. do that,

  739. guys.

  740. We do it.

  741. We do it.

  742. God

  743. will get your

  744. attention.

  745. He will get

  746. my attention.

  747. We have to

  748. repent.

  749. The Christian

  750. life is a

  751. life of

  752. repentance

  753. for God's

  754. glory and

  755. for our

  756. good.

  757. End of

  758. verse 2.

  759. It says,

  760. Call out

  761. against it

  762. for their

  763. evil has

  764. come up

  765. before me.

  766. God is

  767. the only

  768. audience that

  769. matters.

  770. He is

  771. it.

  772. He's the

  773. one who

  774. judges.

  775. He must

  776. live,

  777. we must

  778. live to

  779. an audience

  780. of one.

  781. Not our

  782. mom,

  783. not our

  784. dad,

  785. not our

  786. girlfriend,

  787. boyfriend,

  788. wife,

  789. husband,

  790. boss,

  791. pastor.

  792. We must

  793. live to

  794. an audience

  795. of one.

  796. No one

  797. else matters.

  798. And here,

  799. it doesn't

  800. say that

  801. their evil

  802. has come up

  803. against you,

  804. Jonah,

  805. so I'm

  806. going to

  807. get them.

  808. Or their

  809. evil has

  810. come up

  811. against Israel,

  812. so I'm

  813. going to

  814. get them.

  815. Because their

  816. evil has

  817. come up

  818. before me.

  819. The

  820. actions of

  821. the

  822. Ninevites,

  823. denying the

  824. existence of

  825. God by

  826. their

  827. practices,

  828. tells us

  829. they thought

  830. God did

  831. not exist.

  832. And

  833. verse 3

  834. tells us

  835. that Jonah

  836. thinks God

  837. is small.

  838. Look at

  839. verse 3.

  840. But Jonah

  841. rose to

  842. flee to

  843. Tarshish

  844. from the

  845. presence of

  846. the Lord.

  847. He went

  848. down to

  849. Joppa

  850. and found

  851. a ship

  852. going to

  853. Tarshish.

  854. So he

  855. paid the

  856. fare and

  857. went on

  858. board to

  859. go with

  860. them to

  861. Tarshish

  862. away from

  863. the presence

  864. of the

  865. Lord.

  866. So that

  867. was God's

  868. message.

  869. Go to

  870. Nineveh.

  871. Preach

  872. to them

  873. repentance.

  874. Here we

  875. have Jonah's

  876. reaction.

  877. Jonah

  878. rose.

  879. He rose.

  880. He got

  881. the first

  882. commandment

  883. right.

  884. Remember it

  885. says arise

  886. go.

  887. He rose.

  888. But he

  889. went,

  890. opposite

  891. direction.

  892. Tarshish is

  893. repeated here

  894. three times.

  895. And I

  896. don't know if

  897. you guys

  898. noticed that

  899. when I've

  900. read it.

  901. I mean it's

  902. a clearly

  903. obvious word

  904. Tarshish.

  905. It's three

  906. times repeated.

  907. And that's

  908. to show the

  909. severity of

  910. Jonah's

  911. disobedience.

  912. The author

  913. makes it

  914. clear that

  915. Jonah

  916. disobeyed

  917. in a

  918. big way.

  919. Jonah's

  920. message was

  921. to go to

  922. Nineveh.

  923. Which from

  924. where Jonah

  925. was we're

  926. not exactly

  927. sure but

  928. was to

  929. go northeast.

  930. So Jonah

  931. was to go

  932. northeast.

  933. And Joppa

  934. is southwest.

  935. Joppa is

  936. southwest.

  937. That's pretty

  938. much opposite.

  939. On top of

  940. that Tarshish

  941. most people

  942. say was a

  943. city on the

  944. coast of

  945. Spain.

  946. Now he's

  947. got to go

  948. through the

  949. entire

  950. Mediterranean

  951. Sea to

  952. get there.

  953. And that

  954. was his

  955. place he

  956. wanted to

  957. go.

  958. So not

  959. only was he

  960. going the

  961. opposite

  962. direction but

  963. he was

  964. going 1500

  965. plus miles

  966. away from

  967. where God

  968. wanted him

  969. to go.

  970. Crazy.

  971. He knew

  972. he did not

  973. want to go

  974. to Nineveh.

  975. He knew

  976. and he went

  977. the opposite

  978. way.

  979. And we say

  980. what a fool.

  981. What an

  982. idiot.

  983. And yet we

  984. do the same

  985. thing.

  986. What was the

  987. last thing that

  988. God told you

  989. to do?

  990. What was the

  991. last thing that

  992. you know

  993. clearly God

  994. wanted you to

  995. do?

  996. Did you do

  997. it?

  998. Have you been

  999. faithful in all

  1000. things?

  1001. Because poor

  1002. Jonah, this is

  1003. one situation.

  1004. We only have

  1005. two in the

  1006. Bible so he's

  1007. shooting 50%.

  1008. Now you

  1009. and I, how

  1010. many times has

  1011. God told you

  1012. to do

  1013. something?

  1014. What are we

  1015. shooting?

  1016. 30%?

  1017. 80%?

  1018. And we're

  1019. given this.

  1020. We're given

  1021. the revealed

  1022. Word of God.

  1023. We're given

  1024. the revealed

  1025. will of God

  1026. by His Word.

  1027. We know

  1028. what we're

  1029. supposed to do

  1030. a lot of

  1031. times.

  1032. Yet we

  1033. still

  1034. deny.

  1035. This was

  1036. Jonah's

  1037. mistake.

  1038. He thought

  1039. he could run

  1040. from God.

  1041. He thought

  1042. that if I

  1043. just go far

  1044. enough, if I

  1045. just pick a

  1046. destination, I'm

  1047. going to go to

  1048. Australia.

  1049. He just

  1050. picked a place

  1051. that was

  1052. opposite.

  1053. He thought

  1054. that he could

  1055. run from God.

  1056. from the

  1057. presence of

  1058. the Lord

  1059. is what

  1060. verse 3

  1061. says twice.

  1062. Again, the

  1063. author is

  1064. repeating

  1065. himself to

  1066. show the

  1067. ridiculousness

  1068. of Jonah

  1069. and the

  1070. utter

  1071. disobedience

  1072. of this

  1073. man.

  1074. From the

  1075. presence of

  1076. the Lord.

  1077. The author is

  1078. not telling us

  1079. that Jonah

  1080. thought he

  1081. could run

  1082. from the

  1083. presence of

  1084. the Lord.

  1085. Verse 9 of

  1086. chapter 1

  1087. tells us that

  1088. Jonah knew

  1089. who God

  1090. was.

  1091. I am a

  1092. Hebrew and I

  1093. fear the

  1094. Lord, the

  1095. God of

  1096. heaven, who

  1097. made the

  1098. sea and the

  1099. dry land.

  1100. He knew who

  1101. God was.

  1102. God was.

  1103. It's more

  1104. like Jonah

  1105. is saying, or

  1106. the author is

  1107. saying that

  1108. Jonah is no

  1109. longer standing

  1110. in God's

  1111. presence.

  1112. He's no

  1113. longer standing

  1114. with God.

  1115. He's no

  1116. longer doing

  1117. the will of

  1118. God.

  1119. Kind of like

  1120. Elijah who

  1121. said, I am

  1122. standing in the

  1123. presence of

  1124. God.

  1125. I am doing

  1126. what God has

  1127. commanded me

  1128. to do.

  1129. It's kind of

  1130. that same

  1131. language.

  1132. Jonah is

  1133. not standing

  1134. with God.

  1135. And the

  1136. funny thing

  1137. with this

  1138. story is

  1139. that Jonah

  1140. probably thought

  1141. he was doing

  1142. good.

  1143. He thought he

  1144. was doing

  1145. okay.

  1146. I take

  1147. back good.

  1148. Okay.

  1149. Because God

  1150. tells him what

  1151. to do,

  1152. wherever his

  1153. location is,

  1154. and he has

  1155. to go

  1156. southwest to

  1157. Joppa.

  1158. And a long

  1159. journey, I'm

  1160. sure.

  1161. Everybody

  1162. walked back

  1163. then.

  1164. However long

  1165. it took him,

  1166. he got to

  1167. Joppa.

  1168. And in his

  1169. head he says,

  1170. I'm going to

  1171. go to Tarshish

  1172. before he gets

  1173. to Joppa.

  1174. And there

  1175. happens to be a

  1176. ship there

  1177. who's going to

  1178. Tarshish.

  1179. So, not only

  1180. has he gotten

  1181. through the long

  1182. journey, he now

  1183. has a ship

  1184. that's going to

  1185. Tarshish.

  1186. And lo and

  1187. behold, he's got

  1188. enough money to

  1189. pay for the

  1190. ship to go to

  1191. Tarshish.

  1192. However long

  1193. this journey is,

  1194. he probably

  1195. thought, God

  1196. is surely

  1197. blessing.

  1198. Everything is

  1199. working out.

  1200. this is great.

  1201. But, we

  1202. think this

  1203. too.

  1204. We do

  1205. this as

  1206. well.

  1207. You buy a

  1208. car that

  1209. stretches the

  1210. budget, that

  1211. stresses the

  1212. finances, and

  1213. because you

  1214. haven't had a

  1215. wreck, you

  1216. say, God

  1217. wills it.

  1218. God is

  1219. blessing.

  1220. Or, you're

  1221. dating a

  1222. non-believer, and

  1223. things have been

  1224. going great.

  1225. You haven't

  1226. gone too far

  1227. physically, and

  1228. she or he

  1229. loves me, and

  1230. we have good

  1231. conversations, we

  1232. support each

  1233. other.

  1234. We haven't got

  1235. pregnant yet, so

  1236. God wills it.

  1237. God is

  1238. blessing.

  1239. Or, what

  1240. about not

  1241. really buying

  1242. into this

  1243. Christian thing?

  1244. What about

  1245. going to

  1246. church?

  1247. Going to

  1248. eat afterwards

  1249. with church

  1250. people?

  1251. Talk about

  1252. spiritual things,

  1253. but deep

  1254. down, you

  1255. know you're

  1256. not even a

  1257. Christian.

  1258. But, I

  1259. haven't lost a

  1260. loved one yet.

  1261. God hasn't

  1262. really got my

  1263. attention yet.

  1264. I'll wait.

  1265. I haven't

  1266. fallen deep

  1267. into sin,

  1268. into whatever

  1269. that may be.

  1270. God still

  1271. blesses.

  1272. Incredible!

  1273. See, Jonah

  1274. had a smooth

  1275. ride to

  1276. Joppa.

  1277. A smooth

  1278. ride to

  1279. Joppa.

  1280. Doesn't say he

  1281. had any

  1282. trouble.

  1283. He thought he

  1284. was going to

  1285. have a smooth

  1286. ride to

  1287. Tarshish.

  1288. So, there's

  1289. Jonah's

  1290. reaction.

  1291. Now, we

  1292. have God's

  1293. response and

  1294. Jonah's

  1295. pretense.

  1296. verses 4 and

  1297. 5.

  1298. I call this

  1299. God's

  1300. oh yeah

  1301. moment.

  1302. You're going

  1303. to go that

  1304. way?

  1305. Oh yeah.

  1306. I'll show

  1307. you.

  1308. Verse 4.

  1309. But the

  1310. Lord hurled

  1311. a great

  1312. wind upon

  1313. the sea,

  1314. and there

  1315. was a

  1316. mighty tempest

  1317. on the

  1318. sea, so

  1319. that the

  1320. ship

  1321. threatened

  1322. to break

  1323. up.

  1324. This

  1325. verse

  1326. has become

  1327. fascinating

  1328. to me.

  1329. God's

  1330. sovereignty

  1331. is displayed

  1332. in the

  1333. obvious.

  1334. God is

  1335. in control

  1336. of the

  1337. obvious

  1338. things.

  1339. The

  1340. wind,

  1341. the sea,

  1342. but he's

  1343. also

  1344. sovereign

  1345. over the

  1346. not so

  1347. obvious,

  1348. the ship

  1349. in this

  1350. verse.

  1351. And we'll

  1352. get to

  1353. that in

  1354. just a

  1355. minute.

  1356. Jonah

  1357. disobeyed.

  1358. He

  1359. disobeyed

  1360. God.

  1361. But,

  1362. the sea,

  1363. the wind,

  1364. and even

  1365. the ship

  1366. obeyed

  1367. God.

  1368. They did

  1369. what God

  1370. commanded.

  1371. Look at

  1372. verse 4.

  1373. But the

  1374. Lord

  1375. hurled

  1376. a great

  1377. wind

  1378. upon

  1379. the

  1380. sea.

  1381. This

  1382. language

  1383. is like

  1384. a man

  1385. hurling

  1386. a spear.

  1387. Hurling

  1388. a spear

  1389. at a

  1390. target,

  1391. at an

  1392. animal,

  1393. or whatever,

  1394. an enemy,

  1395. with

  1396. strength

  1397. and

  1398. intensity.

  1399. God

  1400. hurled

  1401. this

  1402. wind

  1403. at

  1404. Jonah,

  1405. at the

  1406. ship

  1407. that

  1408. Jonah

  1409. was

  1410. in.

  1411. The

  1412. wind

  1413. obeyed.

  1414. Went

  1415. where

  1416. God

  1417. commanded.

  1418. the sea

  1419. obeyed

  1420. and

  1421. created

  1422. a storm

  1423. like

  1424. nothing

  1425. the

  1426. sailors

  1427. had

  1428. seen.

  1429. Now look,

  1430. the ship

  1431. obeyed

  1432. as well.

  1433. So that

  1434. the ship

  1435. threatened

  1436. to break

  1437. up.

  1438. The ESV

  1439. translation

  1440. is correct.

  1441. To kind

  1442. of say

  1443. it this

  1444. way,

  1445. the ship

  1446. in Hebrew

  1447. is personified.

  1448. destroyed.

  1449. So that

  1450. the ship

  1451. considered

  1452. breaking

  1453. up.

  1454. Considered

  1455. tearing

  1456. in half

  1457. because the

  1458. storm

  1459. was so

  1460. great.

  1461. So whatever

  1462. that looks

  1463. like on

  1464. the ship,

  1465. I have

  1466. no idea.

  1467. But the

  1468. storm

  1469. was so

  1470. great,

  1471. the wind

  1472. obeyed

  1473. God,

  1474. the sea

  1475. obeyed

  1476. God,

  1477. and the

  1478. ship

  1479. considered

  1480. to break

  1481. apart.

  1482. They're

  1483. God's

  1484. sovereign

  1485. hand.

  1486. And when

  1487. the Lord

  1488. gives a

  1489. mission,

  1490. when He

  1491. commands you

  1492. to do

  1493. something,

  1494. that

  1495. something

  1496. is going

  1497. to get

  1498. done.

  1499. Whatever

  1500. that is,

  1501. God will

  1502. have His

  1503. mission

  1504. complete.

  1505. Here,

  1506. the storm

  1507. that God

  1508. threw at

  1509. Jonah,

  1510. and that

  1511. they had

  1512. to endure,

  1513. was a

  1514. storm big

  1515. enough,

  1516. and great

  1517. enough,

  1518. that it

  1519. scared the

  1520. sailors,

  1521. these guys

  1522. who sailed

  1523. for a living,

  1524. these guys

  1525. who lived

  1526. on the

  1527. Mediterranean

  1528. Sea.

  1529. It scared

  1530. them.

  1531. Verse 5,

  1532. the mariners,

  1533. the mariners,

  1534. however you say

  1535. that word,

  1536. were afraid.

  1537. The sailors

  1538. were afraid.

  1539. And they

  1540. went into

  1541. survival mode.

  1542. Let's throw

  1543. this off.

  1544. Let's throw

  1545. this off.

  1546. Let's lighten

  1547. the load.

  1548. We have to

  1549. survive this

  1550. great storm.

  1551. Jonah's

  1552. pretense,

  1553. or his

  1554. assumption

  1555. was that

  1556. everything was

  1557. good,

  1558. that everything

  1559. was okay.

  1560. I made it to

  1561. Joppa.

  1562. I found a

  1563. boat.

  1564. I had enough

  1565. money.

  1566. Here I go

  1567. off to

  1568. Tarshish.

  1569. He closed

  1570. his eyes

  1571. while God

  1572. was sending

  1573. a storm.

  1574. God was

  1575. orchestrating

  1576. a great

  1577. symphony

  1578. while Jonah

  1579. had his

  1580. eyes

  1581. closed.

  1582. How many

  1583. of you guys

  1584. are doing

  1585. that?

  1586. How many

  1587. of us

  1588. are doing

  1589. that?

  1590. How many

  1591. are ignoring

  1592. the existence

  1593. of God

  1594. when in

  1595. reality,

  1596. God is

  1597. working?

  1598. God is

  1599. sovereign,

  1600. then you

  1601. know that

  1602. he does

  1603. not need

  1604. you or

  1605. me to

  1606. fulfill his

  1607. plan,

  1608. to fulfill

  1609. his mission.

  1610. But yet,

  1611. God invites us

  1612. to join him.

  1613. He invites us

  1614. into his

  1615. kingdom work.

  1616. He invited

  1617. Jonah,

  1618. Jonah,

  1619. and he

  1620. decided he

  1621. was still

  1622. going to

  1623. use Jonah,

  1624. and he

  1625. got his

  1626. attention.

  1627. Have you

  1628. fulfilled the

  1629. mission that

  1630. God has

  1631. for you?

  1632. Are you

  1633. sitting down

  1634. below while

  1635. a storm is

  1636. raging,

  1637. while your

  1638. eyes close

  1639. thinking that

  1640. God does

  1641. not exist or

  1642. care or that

  1643. even everything

  1644. is okay because

  1645. nothing severe

  1646. has happened?

  1647. No big

  1648. storms have

  1649. happened in

  1650. my life.

  1651. For some

  1652. of you,

  1653. fulfilling the

  1654. mission of

  1655. God is

  1656. receiving the

  1657. free gift of

  1658. salvation.

  1659. Right now,

  1660. for some of

  1661. you, it is

  1662. receiving this

  1663. gift of

  1664. salvation.

  1665. God's

  1666. mission for

  1667. Jonah was

  1668. to go to a

  1669. pagan Assyrian

  1670. city and

  1671. preach to

  1672. them repentance.

  1673. Your mission

  1674. might just

  1675. be to repent

  1676. right now.

  1677. Nineveh was

  1678. not a Jewish

  1679. city.

  1680. They were an

  1681. enemy of

  1682. Israel and

  1683. of people who

  1684. practiced

  1685. brutality on

  1686. the Jews.

  1687. In my

  1688. opinion,

  1689. Jonah is

  1690. warranted for

  1691. not going.

  1692. He's right on

  1693. for not wanting

  1694. to go.

  1695. But my

  1696. opinion does

  1697. not matter.

  1698. Your opinion

  1699. does not

  1700. matter.

  1701. God's

  1702. mission is

  1703. not dependent

  1704. on us.

  1705. It is

  1706. dependent upon

  1707. Him.

  1708. God desires

  1709. that His

  1710. creation,

  1711. that His

  1712. people,

  1713. that people

  1714. would know

  1715. His Son

  1716. and be His

  1717. children.

  1718. Praise God

  1719. for the book

  1720. of Jonah.

  1721. Praise God

  1722. for this

  1723. experience,

  1724. this time,

  1725. that we're

  1726. able to

  1727. read that

  1728. Jonah was

  1729. to go to

  1730. a Gentile

  1731. nation,

  1732. a pagan

  1733. nation,

  1734. a non-Jewish

  1735. nation,

  1736. and preach

  1737. repentance.

  1738. Because that's

  1739. you and me.

  1740. We are

  1741. Gentiles.

  1742. Unless you're

  1743. a Jewish,

  1744. we are Gentiles.

  1745. We are

  1746. outside the

  1747. chosen people

  1748. of God.

  1749. We are

  1750. not of

  1751. Israel.

  1752. And in

  1753. the book

  1754. of Jonah,

  1755. before

  1756. Christ,

  1757. Jonah was

  1758. to go

  1759. and to

  1760. preach

  1761. to Gentiles.

  1762. What a

  1763. great story.

  1764. What a

  1765. great mission.

  1766. Praise God

  1767. for His

  1768. mission.

  1769. Praise God

  1770. for calling

  1771. a people to

  1772. Him who

  1773. are not

  1774. Jewish.

  1775. Praise God

  1776. for calling

  1777. based on

  1778. Him alone.

  1779. Because I

  1780. guarantee if

  1781. I'm Irish,

  1782. I bet no

  1783. British person

  1784. is going to

  1785. come and

  1786. preach to

  1787. Irish people

  1788. back in the

  1789. 1400s or

  1790. whatever.

  1791. Clay, you

  1792. can correct

  1793. me later.

  1794. It's not

  1795. based on

  1796. anybody but

  1797. God alone.

  1798. His

  1799. message,

  1800. Jonah didn't

  1801. like.

  1802. He didn't

  1803. like it.

  1804. Jonah

  1805. worshipped

  1806. himself and

  1807. his desires

  1808. instead of

  1809. worshipping the

  1810. Creator.

  1811. And here's

  1812. the bottom

  1813. line.

  1814. I'm going to

  1815. close in just

  1816. a minute.

  1817. But if we

  1818. truly understand

  1819. the mercy of

  1820. God, if we

  1821. truly understood

  1822. the mercy of

  1823. God, then we

  1824. would not act

  1825. like Jonah.

  1826. God, we

  1827. would act like

  1828. another prophet.

  1829. One who

  1830. went in the

  1831. presence of

  1832. God, where

  1833. his sin and

  1834. God's holiness

  1835. was revealed,

  1836. knew exactly

  1837. what he had

  1838. to do.

  1839. So,

  1840. turn to

  1841. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  1842. 6.

  1843. We've gone

  1844. here a few

  1845. times in the

  1846. last couple

  1847. years, but it

  1848. just clearly

  1849. illustrates to

  1850. us what our

  1851. proper response

  1852. is to the

  1853. gospel.

  1854. We're going to

  1855. read just a few

  1856. verses.

  1857. Isaiah 6.

  1858. Isaiah 6.

  1859. Isaiah 6.

  1860. And the

  1861. foundations of

  1862. the threshold

  1863. shook at the

  1864. voice of him

  1865. who called,

  1866. and the house

  1867. was filled with

  1868. smoke, and I

  1869. said, woe is

  1870. me, for I am

  1871. lost, for I am

  1872. a man of unclean

  1873. lips, and I

  1874. dwell in the

  1875. midst of a

  1876. people of

  1877. unclean lips,

  1878. for my eyes

  1879. have seen the

  1880. King, the

  1881. Lord of

  1882. hosts.

  1883. Then one of

  1884. the seraphim

  1885. flew to me,

  1886. having in his

  1887. hand a burning

  1888. coal that had

  1889. taken with

  1890. tongs from

  1891. the altar, and

  1892. he touched

  1893. my mouth and

  1894. said, behold,

  1895. this has

  1896. touched your

  1897. lips, your

  1898. guilt is taken

  1899. away, and

  1900. your sin

  1901. atoned for.

  1902. The gospel.

  1903. And I

  1904. heard the

  1905. voice of the

  1906. Lord saying,

  1907. whom shall I

  1908. send, and

  1909. who will go

  1910. for us?

  1911. And Isaiah's

  1912. response is,

  1913. then I said,

  1914. here am I,

  1915. send me.

  1916. Here am I,

  1917. send me.

  1918. Jonah didn't

  1919. really understand

  1920. the mercy of

  1921. God.

  1922. He knew that

  1923. God was

  1924. merciful.

  1925. He knew that

  1926. it would

  1927. happen.

  1928. But Jonah's

  1929. Jewish.

  1930. Jonah's the

  1931. chosen people.

  1932. And he

  1933. decided that

  1934. what God was

  1935. going to do,

  1936. I don't want

  1937. anything to do

  1938. with that.

  1939. Guys, if we

  1940. truly understood

  1941. the mercy of

  1942. God, if we

  1943. truly understood

  1944. the gospel,

  1945. our response

  1946. would be,

  1947. here am I,

  1948. send me.

  1949. Wherever that

  1950. is, whatever

  1951. that looks

  1952. like.

  1953. The gospel

  1954. that puts

  1955. your sinfulness,

  1956. your depravity,

  1957. up against

  1958. God's holiness

  1959. and His

  1960. justice.

  1961. Justice that

  1962. determines we

  1963. are guilty.

  1964. That we

  1965. deserve the

  1966. wrath of

  1967. God because

  1968. of our sin.

  1969. Ephesians 2,

  1970. but God

  1971. being rich in

  1972. mercy because

  1973. of the great

  1974. love with

  1975. which He

  1976. loved us,

  1977. even when we

  1978. were dead in

  1979. our trespasses,

  1980. made us alive

  1981. together with

  1982. Christ.

  1983. For our

  1984. sake He made

  1985. Him to be

  1986. sin who knew

  1987. no sin,

  1988. that in Him

  1989. we might

  1990. become the

  1991. righteousness

  1992. of God.

  1993. Jesus died

  1994. and rose from

  1995. the grave for

  1996. you and for

  1997. me so that

  1998. we, if we

  1999. repent, if we

  2000. do as the

  2001. Ninevites did,

  2002. that He will

  2003. show us mercy

  2004. and that we
