  1. We're going to start reading in verse 17 of chapter 1 and go through all of chapter 2.

  2. In chapter 2, we have the prayer of Jonah from the belly of the big fish.

  3. ! We're not sure if it's a whale.

  4. All it says is a big fish.

  5. VeggieTales says it was a whale, but that's just VeggieTales.

  6. As we read through it, you will hear a man in desperation,

  7. a man who is saddened by his choice,

  8. and ultimately a man who is praying a prayer of repentance.

  9. Jonah is brought face to face with God's sovereignty.

  10. Jonah feels the weight of his sin.

  11. He rejoices in God's mercy.

  12. And he commits to do exactly what God had commanded him to do in the first place.

  13. Going to Nineveh.

  14. Now these observations can help us as we live out this Christian life.

  15. As we struggle to live and to do the will of God.

  16. And as we, by God's grace, are perfected by his work in and through us.

  17. So as we study, let's pray that God would speak and teach us through this prayer of Jonah.

  18. Let me say this as we dig in.

  19. This prayer, as you can see from verse 1,

  20. it's a prayer that Jonah prays from the belly of the fish.

  21. But Jonah does not acknowledge the fish.

  22. He does not talk about his situation.

  23. He talks about God saving him from his desperation, from being close to death.

  24. But he doesn't talk about being in the fish.

  25. I think that's clear because when I first read this, I thought, well, the belly of Sheol.

  26. There's some language here that he's definitely talking about being in the fish.

  27. But Jonah is praying this prayer, but none of it is talking about being in the fish.

  28. So as we go through this, kind of pay attention to that.

  29. And I hope that I'm clear enough that I can communicate that to you.

  30. So the first thing that Jonah does in this prayer is that Jonah admits God's sovereignty.

  31. Verse 3,

  32. For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas and the floods surrounding me.

  33. All your ways and your billows passed over me.

  34. If I was to pick one thing so far in the book of Jonah that has been clear,

  35. one thing I would say is the sovereignty of God through chapter 1 and chapter 2.

  36. God's shown his sovereignty in a lot of things.

  37. Creation, the sea, the wind.

  38. Jamie and I have a rule in our relationship that we try,

  39. we've had it for quite some time, probably our whole entire life of knowing each other.

  40. We do not use extreme statements.

  41. We do not use never or always.

  42. I'm usually guilty of this more than she is.

  43. The reason being is, once you say that statement,

  44. it just leads to arguing about something silly.

  45. Because really, you can never say always or never.

  46. It's just kind of, it's not really a good idea in marriage anyway.

  47. Take it from me.

  48. But this morning, I have to say, I have to use an extreme statement.

  49. You cannot never, ever, ever, never, never read Jonah and not see the sovereignty of God.

  50. You cannot read it and miss the sovereignty of God.

  51. It is evident in God hurling the wind at Jonah.

  52. It is evident at the sea obeying.

  53. It is evident at the ship considering to break apart.

  54. And now, in chapter 2, at the end of chapter 1, verse 17,

  55. God, the Lord appoints a great fish to swallow Jonah.

  56. In fact, one commentator said with that verse,

  57. verse 17 of chapter 1 and verse 10 of chapter 2,

  58. where God showing His sovereign rule over creation, over a big fish,

  59. he says that He wishes that those two verses were never written.

  60. That the big fish was just done away with.

  61. Because these two verses are more questioned and argued than most any verse in Scripture.

  62. Questioned and argued even to the point of dismissing the entire Bible.

  63. Because surely a man cannot live in the belly of a fish for three days and three nights.

  64. Now, I was tempted this week to come to you with scientific proof that a man can live in a big fish.

  65. Something that has happened in history.

  66. And I was convicted not to do that because then I would just be using science to prove the Word of God

  67. instead of faith accepting that this is the Word of God and it's truth.

  68. And we have to accept the fact that God appointed a great fish,

  69. whatever type of fish this is,

  70. and in doing so God exercised His sovereignty.

  71. The sovereignty of God is something that Christians like to say.

  72. We in church say it, yes, God is sovereign.

  73. We believe that.

  74. But I don't think we understand it completely.

  75. Even if we say we understand it, I don't think we take it to the end result.

  76. For some of you, the sovereignty of God, this topic is a treasure to you.

  77. You love it.

  78. You get excited inside thinking about God being ruler of all.

  79. For others of you, it might just be like pennies.

  80. They have value.

  81. It's important.

  82. But if you see it on the sidewalk, you may or may not pick it up.

  83. But I want all of us to leave here this morning with the doctrine of God's sovereignty

  84. to be treasures for all of us.

  85. And so with that in mind, I would like to just take a few minutes

  86. and define what the sovereignty of God is

  87. and then unfold this prayer that Jonah is praying.

  88. So what is the sovereignty of God?

  89. First Chronicles 29, verse 11 and 12 says,

    1 Chronicles 29:11

  90. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty.

  91. For all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours.

  92. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all.

  93. Both riches and honor come to you and you rule over all.

  94. In your hand are power and might.

  95. And in your hand it is to make great and give strength to all.

  96. Simply put, the sovereignty of God is God is God.

  97. Simple.

  98. God is God.

  99. He is the most high.

  100. He is supreme.

  101. He is king of kings.

  102. He is lord of lords.

  103. What that means is nothing compares to him.

  104. Angels, demons, greatest presidents, world leaders, disciples, apostles, Lucifer,

  105. all are under his authority.

  106. God and the rest.

  107. In his book, The Sovereignty of God, A.W. Pink says it this way,

  108. The sovereignty of God of Scripture is absolute, irresistible, and infinite.

  109. When we say that God is sovereign, we affirm his right to govern the universe,

  110. which he has made for his own glory just as he pleases.

  111. We affirm that his right is the right of the potter over the clay,

  112. that he may mold that clay into whatsoever form he chooses,

  113. fashioning out of the same lump one vessel unto honor and another unto dishonor.

  114. We affirm that he is under no rule or law outside of his own will and nature,

  115. and that God is a law unto himself,

  116. and that he is under no obligation to give account for his matters to any.

  117. This has to be understood.

  118. We have to understand that God is sovereign.

  119. Because if we don't, it's almost like the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland.

  120. Because once she fell into that rabbit hole, her world changed.

  121. Her entire perspective changed.

  122. And she didn't stop until she reached the bottom,

  123. which ended up being an imaginary place.

  124. Now, if we don't believe the sovereignty of God,

  125. our perspectives change,

  126. and we don't end up until we reach the bottom,

  127. which is believing in nothing.

  128. And nothing, at least,

  129. nothing objective,

  130. at the least.

  131. Meaning,

  132. unchangeable,

  133. nothing solid.

  134. A.W. Pink also says,

  135. in a word,

  136. to deny the sovereignty of God

  137. is to enter upon a path

  138. which, if followed,

  139. to its logical terminus,

  140. is to arrive at blank atheism.

  141. In the book of Jonah,

  142. as I've already mentioned,

  143. God shows His sovereignty over creation,

  144. but He also shows His sovereignty over His mercy,

  145. His grace,

  146. His salvation.

  147. Okay?

  148. If a judge shows mercy to a criminal,

  149. if the judge says,

  150. I'm going to let you go,

  151. no charges,

  152. you're free to roam,

  153. it is the judge's mercy that was given.

  154. He is the author of that mercy.

  155. It was His mercy to give,

  156. and He chose to give it to the criminal.

  157. The same way for God.

  158. God is the author of His mercy,

  159. and He is sovereign over that mercy.

  160. And He chooses to give mercy

  161. to whom He will give mercy.

  162. Romans 9.15,

  163. Exodus 33.19,

  164. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,

  165. and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

  166. Hard truth.

  167. We as human beings

  168. do not have right to the mercy of God.

  169. We don't have right to that.

  170. Otherwise, it would not be mercy at all.

  171. It would be payment or wages earned.

  172. And the same is for grace.

  173. God is sovereign,

  174. which means He is sovereign over creation,

  175. sovereign over grace,

  176. over His mercy,

  177. and over His salvation.

  178. And in this story,

  179. we have God providing salvation,

  180. showing Jonah mercy

  181. by His sovereign hand.

  182. So,

  183. the sovereignty of God

  184. is important.

  185. It's important to understand.

  186. It puts perspective

  187. for you and for me.

  188. Jonah's prayer in chapter 2

  189. is a prayer of repentance.

  190. Acknowledging the sovereignty of God

  191. is an important aspect of repentance.

  192. Jonah admits God's sovereignty.

  193. I've read you verse 3.

  194. For you cast me into the deep,

  195. into the heart of the seas,

  196. and the floods surrounded me.

  197. All your ways and your billows

  198. passed over me.

  199. You cast me into the deep.

  200. Jonah's not saying that

  201. he's the one at fault.

  202. Jonah's acknowledging that

  203. my bad, almost.

  204. I'm the one who messed up.

  205. I was the one thrown overboard.

  206. However,

  207. you, God,

  208. allowed it,

  209. or permitted it,

  210. to happen,

  211. so that you can receive glory.

  212. All your ways and your billows

  213. passed over me.

  214. He's admitting God's rule

  215. over His creation.

  216. It's as A.W. Pink,

  217. as the potter,

  218. rules the clay.

  219. Romans 9 reminds us of that.

  220. The reason it's important

  221. to admit God's sovereignty

  222. is when we realize our place,

  223. when we see who God is,

  224. how great He is,

  225. how supreme He is,

  226. we're left in awe

  227. and shame

  228. of our inadequacies.

  229. I would say it's almost

  230. like a plumb line.

  231. Some people like to say

  232. that God is more

  233. like a plumb line.

  234. And my problem with that

  235. is we would try to

  236. line up with that plumb line.

  237. And that's not really

  238. what the sovereignty of God is.

  239. And it's not up here

  240. because

  241. we don't look at it

  242. and see ourselves.

  243. I think it's more like a window.

  244. We look through a window

  245. and we see the goodness of God.

  246. We see God's

  247. greatness,

  248. His righteousness,

  249. His justice,

  250. His holiness.

  251. But looking back at us,

  252. covering up what we just saw

  253. is our,

  254. who we really are.

  255. And

  256. we have to have

  257. that proper perspective.

  258. We have to be able

  259. to see who God is,

  260. but in reality,

  261. know who we are.

  262. Otherwise,

  263. why would we repent?

  264. Historians have said

  265. that we look to history

  266. so that we don't make

  267. the same mistakes.

  268. Well, for us,

  269. we look to history

  270. so that we see

  271. what God has done

  272. and what He's doing

  273. and what He's going to do

  274. for you and for me.

  275. And proper perspective

  276. is vital to

  277. a godly,

  278. repentant heart.

  279. So Jonah admits

  280. God's sovereignty.

  281. Second thing that Jonah does

  282. is he feels

  283. the weight of his sin.

  284. Verse 2

  285. and then verse 4

  286. and verse 6.

  287. Verse 2 says,

  288. I called out to the Lord

  289. out of my distress

  290. and He answered me.

  291. Out of the belly of Sheol

  292. I cried

  293. and you heard

  294. my voice.

  295. Down to 6.

  296. Then I said,

  297. I am driven away

  298. from your sight

  299. yet I shall again

  300. look upon your holy temple.

  301. The waters closed in

  302. over me

  303. to take my life.

  304. The deep surrounded me.

  305. Weeds were wrapped

  306. about my head

  307. and the roots

  308. of the mountains.

  309. I went down

  310. to the land

  311. whose bars

  312. closed upon me

  313. forever.

  314. The author

  315. gives us a picture

  316. of a man

  317. in desperation.

  318. a man who felt

  319. like he had been

  320. eaten by death

  321. not by a big fish.

  322. Out of the belly

  323. of Sheol

  324. I cried.

  325. Now when we see

  326. a word like belly

  327. and we know

  328. that he's been

  329. swallowed by a fish

  330. we automatically say

  331. well he's talking

  332. about the fish.

  333. What he's talking

  334. about is

  335. deep down

  336. the furthest

  337. you could go

  338. out of the belly

  339. of Sheol.

  340. Sheol in the Bible

  341. most of the time

  342. refers to the realm

  343. of the dead

  344. or place of the dead.

  345. Those that are

  346. separated from God.

  347. For us

  348. this text

  349. has

  350. this meaning

  351. has two meanings

  352. for us.

  353. This word has

  354. two meanings.

  355. Jonah admits

  356. that he's separated

  357. from God

  358. which he had already

  359. admitted in chapter 1

  360. I'm running

  361. from the presence

  362. of God.

  363. I am no longer

  364. in God's will.

  365. And second

  366. it means that

  367. Jonah believed

  368. he was going

  369. to die.

  370. He had reached

  371. the point

  372. of despair

  373. and in his

  374. last moments

  375. or seconds

  376. he cried out

  377. to God

  378. and God

  379. showed mercy

  380. and heard him.

  381. See we

  382. I think we have

  383. a low view

  384. of sin

  385. and a

  386. high view

  387. of ourselves.

  388. here

  389. Jonah

  390. after

  391. making his

  392. mistakes

  393. and being

  394. disobedient

  395. and coming

  396. to this point

  397. he now has

  398. a low view

  399. of himself

  400. and a high

  401. view

  402. of sin

  403. because

  404. of course

  405. he admits

  406. God's sovereign

  407. hand in this

  408. situation.

  409. Now

  410. let me put it

  411. this way

  412. if you stole

  413. a pen

  414. or a notebook

  415. from the

  416. school bookstore

  417. we would all

  418. say that's

  419. that's not a

  420. really big deal

  421. just take it

  422. back

  423. or go pay

  424. for it

  425. three bucks

  426. or whatever

  427. it is

  428. it's really

  429. not

  430. that

  431. huge

  432. but it

  433. is a sin

  434. and sin

  435. is an offense

  436. against a

  437. holy

  438. infinite

  439. God

  440. so

  441. when we

  442. sin

  443. stealing

  444. a pack

  445. of gum

  446. candy

  447. bar

  448. a pencil

  449. a car

  450. this is a

  451. big jump

  452. we sin

  453. against his

  454. righteousness

  455. which then

  456. makes us

  457. guilty

  458. and deserving

  459. of hell

  460. see our

  461. perspective

  462. wants to

  463. say

  464. no big

  465. deal

  466. just

  467. take it

  468. back

  469. pay

  470. for it

  471. you know

  472. you slap

  473. on the wrist

  474. you stole

  475. a pencil

  476. who hasn't

  477. stolen from

  478. the workplace

  479. or whatever

  480. but to

  481. God

  482. it's

  483. serious

  484. sin

  485. is way

  486. more

  487. sinister

  488. than we

  489. admit

  490. when we

  491. sin

  492. we are

  493. telling

  494. God

  495. that he

  496. does not

  497. deserve

  498. our

  499. praise

  500. and our

  501. respect

  502. we're

  503. saying to

  504. God

  505. you are

  506. not

  507. God

  508. I am

  509. God

  510. and this

  511. is

  512. important

  513. to me

  514. even

  515. if it's

  516. something

  517. as small

  518. as stealing

  519. a pack

  520. of gum

  521. or a

  522. pen

  523. and

  524. Jonah

  525. is

  526. face

  527. to

  528. face

  529. in

  530. desperation

  531. acknowledging

  532. the sin

  533. that he

  534. committed

  535. he sees

  536. it

  537. he has

  538. the weight

  539. of it

  540. pushing

  541. him

  542. to

  543. the

  544. bottom

  545. of

  546. the

  547. sea

  548. he

  549. says

  550. I

  551. went

  552. down

  553. in

  554. verse

  555. six

  556. I

  557. went

  558. down

  559. to

  560. the

  561. land

  562. whose

  563. bars

  564. closed

  565. upon

  566. me

  567. forever

  568. he

  569. was

  570. sinking

  571. further

  572. and

  573. further

  574. down

  575. he

  576. felt

  577. he

  578. was

  579. trapped

  580. like

  581. bars

  582. of

  583. a

  584. prison

  585. butterfly

  586. he

  587. was

  588. imprisoned

  589. by

  590. death

  591. now

  592. as a

  593. pastor

  594. and I

  595. know

  596. Nathan

  597. would

  598. agree

  599. and if

  600. you

  601. guys

  602. have

  603. a

  604. pastor's

  605. heart

  606. you

  607. would

  608. agree

  609. I

  610. don't

  611. want

  612. to

  613. see

  614. any

  615. of

  616. you

  617. in

  618. Jonah's

  619. spot

  620. I

  621. don't

  622. want

  623. to

  624. see

  625. anybody

  626. in

  627. Jonah's

  628. spot

  629. the

  630. point

  631. of

  632. desperation

  633. and

  634. then

  635. you

  636. finally

  637. cry

  638. out

  639. to

  640. God

  641. oh

  642. well

  643. God

  644. is

  645. sovereign

  646. God

  647. is

  648. ruler

  649. of

  650. all

  651. maybe

  652. I

  653. should

  654. acknowledge

  655. him

  656. the

  657. truth

  658. of

  659. the

  660. matter

  661. though

  662. is

  663. that

  664. sometimes

  665. for

  666. us

  667. it

  668. takes

  669. a

  670. situation

  671. like

  672. this

  673. or

  674. situations

  675. see

  676. I

  677. want

  678. and I

  679. know

  680. Nathan

  681. feels

  682. this

  683. way

  684. I

  685. want

  686. to

  687. be

  688. able

  689. to

  690. communicate

  691. things

  692. to

  693. you

  694. lay

  695. it

  696. out

  697. right

  698. in

  699. front

  700. of

  701. you

  702. you

  703. guys

  704. accept

  705. it

  706. we

  707. all

  708. accept

  709. it

  710. we

  711. all

  712. walk

  713. out

  714. of

  715. here

  716. changed

  717. redeemed

  718. people

  719. being

  720. sanctified

  721. being

  722. perfected

  723. and

  724. go on

  725. our

  726. merry

  727. !

  728. way

  729. and

  730. everybody

  731. is

  732. victorious

  733. in

  734. the

  735. life

  736. of

  737. following

  738. Christ

  739. doesn't

  740. end up

  741. that way

  742. does it

  743. we

  744. tend

  745. to

  746. end up

  747. like

  748. Jonah

  749. and

  750. probably

  751. in fact

  752. I know

  753. this is

  754. why

  755. a book

  756. like

  757. Jonah

  758. is

  759. in

  760. the

  761. Bible

  762. not

  763. to

  764. say

  765. look

  766. what

  767. God

  768. can

  769. do

  770. with

  771. a

  772. big

  773. fish

  774. although

  775. that's

  776. important

  777. but

  778. to

  779. say

  780. that

  781. you're

  782. going

  783. to

  784. mess

  785. up

  786. that

  787. you're

  788. going

  789. to

  790. be

  791. in

  792. desperation

  793. but

  794. God

  795. is

  796. going

  797. to

  798. be

  799. merciful

  800. God

  801. is

  802. going

  803. to

  804. provide

  805. salvation

  806. for

  807. you

  808. and

  809. he's

  810. going

  811. to

  812. prove

  813. his

  814. goodness

  815. and

  816. prove

  817. his

  818. sovereignty

  819. and

  820. prove

  821. his

  822. mercy

  823. to

  824. you

  825. even

  826. in

  827. this

  828. repentant

  829. prayer

  830. of

  831. Jonah

  832. we

  833. see

  834. the

  835. depravity

  836. of

  837. man

  838. for

  839. Jonah

  840. waited

  841. till

  842. he had

  843. no

  844. hope

  845. he

  846. waited

  847. and

  848. then

  849. he

  850. cries

  851. out

  852. to

  853. God

  854. this

  855. prayer

  856. is

  857. talking

  858. about

  859. him

  860. sinking

  861. in

  862. the

  863. water

  864. weeds

  865. coming

  866. around

  867. him

  868. you know

  869. not only

  870. does our

  871. does our

  872. situation

  873. around us

  874. our

  875. circumstances

  876. however

  877. hard

  878. they

  879. are

  880. make

  881. us

  882. make

  883. us

  884. feel

  885. the

  886. despair

  887. and

  888. hopelessness

  889. that

  890. comes

  891. with

  892. sin

  893. but

  894. also

  895. the

  896. reality

  897. of

  898. no

  899. longer

  900. being

  901. in

  902. God's

  903. plan

  904. no

  905. longer

  906. doing

  907. what

  908. God

  909. had

  910. commanded

  911. us

  912. or

  913. called

  914. us

  915. to

  916. do

  917. that

  918. causes

  919. desperation

  920. and

  921. hopelessness

  922. as

  923. well

  924. that's

  925. just

  926. evidence

  927. of

  928. God

  929. working

  930. though

  931. God

  932. showing

  933. himself

  934. to

  935. us

  936. even

  937. in

  938. this

  939. despair

  940. verse

  941. 4

  942. says

  943. I

  944. am

  945. driven

  946. away

  947. from

  948. your

  949. sight

  950. yet

  951. I

  952. shall

  953. again

  954. look

  955. upon

  956. your

  957. holy

  958. temple

  959. now

  960. our

  961. our

  962. sin

  963. no

  964. matter

  965. what

  966. it

  967. is

  968. pack

  969. of

  970. gum

  971. or

  972. fleeing

  973. to

  974. Tarshish

  975. separates

  976. that

  977. fellowship

  978. from

  979. God

  980. being

  981. driven

  982. away

  983. from

  984. God

  985. from

  986. his

  987. sight

  988. but

  989. the

  990. second

  991. part

  992. of

  993. that

  994. verse

  995. there

  996. is

  997. hope

  998. yet

  999. I

  1000. shall

  1001. again

  1002. look

  1003. upon

  1004. your

  1005. holy

  1006. temple

  1007. Jonah

  1008. knew

  1009. God

  1010. was

  1011. merciful

  1012. and

  1013. knew

  1014. that

  1015. he

  1016. would

  1017. be

  1018. rescued

  1019. on

  1020. earth

  1021. or

  1022. after

  1023. death

  1024. we

  1025. we

  1026. must

  1027. never

  1028. ever

  1029. ever

  1030. I'll

  1031. say

  1032. an

  1033. extreme

  1034. statement

  1035. we

  1036. must

  1037. never

  1038. ever

  1039. ever

  1040. look

  1041. on

  1042. sin

  1043. without

  1044. serious

  1045. consideration

  1046. and

  1047. weighty

  1048. thought

  1049. sin

  1050. is

  1051. serious

  1052. stuff

  1053. it

  1054. breaks

  1055. our

  1056. fellowship

  1057. with the

  1058. heavenly

  1059. father

  1060. and

  1061. Jonah

  1062. in this

  1063. prayer

  1064. we see

  1065. evidence

  1066. of

  1067. that

  1068. brings

  1069. desperation

  1070. and fear

  1071. of death

  1072. point

  1073. number

  1074. three

  1075. we'll

  1076. see

  1077. the

  1078. observation

  1079. number

  1080. three

  1081. here

  1082. Jonah

  1083. admits

  1084. God's

  1085. sovereignty

  1086. he

  1087. forgot

  1088. my point

  1089. he feels

  1090. the weight

  1091. of his

  1092. sin

  1093. and

  1094. Jonah

  1095. rejoices

  1096. in

  1097. God's

  1098. mercy

  1099. verse

  1100. six

  1101. second

  1102. part

  1103. of

  1104. verse

  1105. six

  1106. verse

  1107. seven

  1108. Jonah

  1109. describes

  1110. the

  1111. situation

  1112. sinking

  1113. the

  1114. waters

  1115. closed

  1116. in

  1117. over

  1118. me

  1119. to

  1120. take

  1121. my

  1122. life

  1123. the

  1124. deep

  1125. surrounded

  1126. me

  1127. seaweed

  1128. weeds

  1129. were

  1130. wrapped

  1131. about

  1132. my

  1133. head

  1134. at

  1135. the

  1136. roots

  1137. of

  1138. the

  1139. mountains

  1140. I'm

  1141. sinking

  1142. further

  1143. and

  1144. further

  1145. down

  1146. yet

  1147. you

  1148. God

  1149. that

  1150. yet

  1151. you

  1152. brought

  1153. up

  1154. my

  1155. life

  1156. from

  1157. the

  1158. pit

  1159. oh

  1160. Lord

  1161. my

  1162. God

  1163. when

  1164. my

  1165. life

  1166. was

  1167. fainting

  1168. away

  1169. I

  1170. remember

  1171. the

  1172. Lord

  1173. and

  1174. my

  1175. prayer

  1176. came

  1177. to

  1178. you

  1179. and

  1180. to

  1181. your

  1182. holy

  1183. temple

  1184. to

  1185. God

  1186. showed

  1187. mercy

  1188. on

  1189. Jonah

  1190. by

  1191. providing

  1192. a

  1193. big

  1194. fish

  1195. to

  1196. swallow

  1197. him

  1198. up

  1199. to

  1200. teach

  1201. him

  1202. and

  1203. to

  1204. take

  1205. him

  1206. in

  1207. the

  1208. proper

  1209. direction

  1210. direction

  1211. that is

  1212. that is

  1213. less

  1214. north

  1215. and

  1216. south

  1217. and

  1218. east

  1219. and

  1220. west

  1221. but

  1222. in

  1223. line

  1224. with

  1225. what

  1226. God

  1227. wanted

  1228. done

  1229. and

  1230. the

  1231. message

  1232. that

  1233. he

  1234. was

  1235. to

  1236. bring

  1237. to

  1238. Nineveh

  1239. see

  1240. this

  1241. verse

  1242. seven

  1243. end

  1244. of

  1245. six

  1246. verse

  1247. seven

  1248. is

  1249. the

  1250. turning

  1251. point

  1252. of

  1253. the

  1254. prayer

  1255. Jonah

  1256. who

  1257. was

  1258. in

  1259. despair

  1260. describing

  1261. his

  1262. situation

  1263. sinking

  1264. has

  1265. been

  1266. shown

  1267. mercy

  1268. albeit

  1269. miraculously

  1270. by a

  1271. big

  1272. fish

  1273. swallowing

  1274. this

  1275. guy

  1276. up

  1277. God

  1278. reached

  1279. down

  1280. and

  1281. grabbed

  1282. Jonah

  1283. from

  1284. death

  1285. he's

  1286. turned

  1287. from

  1288. gloom

  1289. and

  1290. from

  1291. despair

  1292. in

  1293. this

  1294. prayer

  1295. to

  1296. worshiping

  1297. God

  1298. singing

  1299. his

  1300. praises

  1301. because

  1302. he

  1303. who

  1304. once

  1305. was

  1306. dead

  1307. is

  1308. now

  1309. alive

  1310. he

  1311. was

  1312. certain

  1313. felt

  1314. he

  1315. was

  1316. certain

  1317. to

  1318. die

  1319. he

  1320. who

  1321. was

  1322. blind

  1323. can

  1324. now

  1325. see

  1326. God

  1327. showed

  1328. mercy

  1329. to

  1330. a

  1331. man

  1332. who

  1333. ran

  1334. from

  1335. him

  1336. in

  1337. complete

  1338. disobedience

  1339. that

  1340. is

  1341. good

  1342. news

  1343. for

  1344. you

  1345. and

  1346. for

  1347. me

  1348. that

  1349. is

  1350. great

  1351. news

  1352. for

  1353. you

  1354. and

  1355. for

  1356. me

  1357. God

  1358. reaching

  1359. down

  1360. to

  1361. a

  1362. person

  1363. who

  1364. was

  1365. drowning

  1366. in

  1367. sin

  1368. whose

  1369. selfishness

  1370. was

  1371. wrapped

  1372. around

  1373. his

  1374. head

  1375. who

  1376. was

  1377. sinking

  1378. deeper

  1379. and

  1380. deeper

  1381. into

  1382. sin

  1383. and

  1384. showing

  1385. mercy

  1386. to

  1387. that

  1388. person

  1389. see

  1390. we

  1391. have

  1392. evidence

  1393. in

  1394. the

  1395. book

  1396. of

  1397. Jonah

  1398. that

  1399. Jonah

  1400. knew

  1401. God

  1402. was

  1403. merciful

  1404. he

  1405. knew

  1406. it

  1407. this is

  1408. in

  1409. verse

  1410. 2

  1411. of

  1412. chapter

  1413. 4

  1414. this is

  1415. his

  1416. reason

  1417. why

  1418. he

  1419. didn't

  1420. want

  1421. to

  1422. go

  1423. to

  1424. Nineveh

  1425. in

  1426. the

  1427. first

  1428. place

  1429. oh

  1430. Lord

  1431. is

  1432. not

  1433. this

  1434. what

  1435. I

  1436. said

  1437. when

  1438. I

  1439. was

  1440. yet

  1441. in

  1442. my

  1443. country

  1444. that

  1445. is

  1446. why

  1447. I

  1448. made

  1449. haste

  1450. to

  1451. flew

  1452. to

  1453. Tarshish

  1454. for

  1455. I

  1456. knew

  1457. that

  1458. you

  1459. are

  1460. a

  1461. gracious

  1462. God

  1463. and

  1464. merciful

  1465. but

  1466. I

  1467. don't

  1468. think

  1469. Jonah

  1470. really

  1471. knew

  1472. I

  1473. don't

  1474. think

  1475. Jonah

  1476. really

  1477. got

  1478. it

  1479. until

  1480. God

  1481. showed

  1482. Jonah

  1483. mercy

  1484. until

  1485. Jonah

  1486. was in

  1487. despair

  1488. and

  1489. death

  1490. did

  1491. he

  1492. get

  1493. it

  1494. that

  1495. God

  1496. is

  1497. merciful

  1498. guys

  1499. you

  1500. and

  1501. me

  1502. before

  1503. Christ

  1504. are

  1505. dead

  1506. we

  1507. are

  1508. drowning

  1509. in

  1510. our

  1511. sin

  1512. we

  1513. get

  1514. it

  1515. or

  1516. we

  1517. have

  1518. the

  1519. ability

  1520. to

  1521. get

  1522. it

  1523. that

  1524. God

  1525. is

  1526. merciful

  1527. and

  1528. Jonah

  1529. gets

  1530. it

  1531. now

  1532. and

  1533. he

  1534. rejoices

  1535. in

  1536. God's

  1537. mercy

  1538. so

  1539. when

  1540. we

  1541. sing

  1542. songs

  1543. about

  1544. mercy

  1545. when

  1546. we

  1547. sing

  1548. songs

  1549. about

  1550. God's

  1551. great

  1552. mercy

  1553. and

  1554. great

  1555. salvation

  1556. we

  1557. should

  1558. rejoice

  1559. not

  1560. just

  1561. sing

  1562. it

  1563. because

  1564. it's

  1565. what

  1566. we

  1567. do

  1568. in

  1569. church

  1570. because

  1571. we've

  1572. been

  1573. shown

  1574. this

  1575. same

  1576. mercy

  1577. that

  1578. Jonah

  1579. was

  1580. shown

  1581. and

  1582. what

  1583. follows

  1584. Jonah

  1585. rejoicing

  1586. in

  1587. God's

  1588. mercy

  1589. is

  1590. my

  1591. last

  1592. point

  1593. Jonah

  1594. follows

  1595. God

  1596. and

  1597. commits

  1598. to

  1599. do

  1600. what

  1601. he

  1602. had

  1603. commanded

  1604. him

  1605. to

  1606. do

  1607. being

  1608. the

  1609. recipient

  1610. of

  1611. God's

  1612. mercy

  1613. doesn't

  1614. doesn't

  1615. just

  1616. lead

  1617. to

  1618. worship

  1619. although

  1620. that's

  1621. what

  1622. we

  1623. were

  1624. created

  1625. to

  1626. do

  1627. we

  1628. were

  1629. created

  1630. to sing

  1631. his

  1632. praises

  1633. to

  1634. worship

  1635. God

  1636. but

  1637. we

  1638. know

  1639. that

  1640. worship

  1641. isn't

  1642. just

  1643. an

  1644. act

  1645. of

  1646. song

  1647. or

  1648. an

  1649. act

  1650. of

  1651. something

  1652. you

  1653. do

  1654. on

  1655. Sunday

  1656. morning

  1657. but

  1658. worship

  1659. is

  1660. a

  1661. life

  1662. worship

  1663. is

  1664. living

  1665. out

  1666. glorifying

  1667. !

  1668. God

  1669. in

  1670. everything

  1671. that

  1672. we

  1673. do

  1674. !

  1675. being

  1676. the

  1677. recipient

  1678. of

  1679. God's

  1680. mercy

  1681. doesn't

  1682. just

  1683. lead

  1684. to

  1685. worship

  1686. but

  1687. it

  1688. also

  1689. leads

  1690. to

  1691. obedience

  1692. and

  1693. worshiping

  1694. God

  1695. in

  1696. that

  1697. obedience

  1698. so

  1699. verse

  1700. nine

  1701. Jonah

  1702. closing

  1703. down

  1704. his

  1705. prayer

  1706. but

  1707. I

  1708. with

  1709. the

  1710. voice

  1711. of

  1712. thanksgiving

  1713. acknowledging

  1714. what

  1715. God

  1716. had

  1717. done

  1718. will

  1719. sacrifice

  1720. to

  1721. you

  1722. what

  1723. I

  1724. have

  1725. vowed

  1726. I

  1727. will

  1728. pay

  1729. Jonah

  1730. commits

  1731. to

  1732. do

  1733. what

  1734. God

  1735. commanded

  1736. at

  1737. the

  1738. beginning

  1739. of

  1740. the

  1741. book

  1742. so

  1743. what

  1744. I

  1745. have

  1746. vowed

  1747. I

  1748. will

  1749. pay

  1750. is

  1751. reference

  1752. to

  1753. what

  1754. God

  1755. commanded

  1756. in

  1757. the

  1758. first

  1759. place

  1760. it's

  1761. not

  1762. it's

  1763. not

  1764. the

  1765. vows

  1766. that

  1767. that

  1768. the

  1769. sailors

  1770. made

  1771. at

  1772. the

  1773. end

  1774. of

  1775. chapter

  1776. one

  1777. Jonah

  1778. is

  1779. making

  1780. a

  1781. vow

  1782. to

  1783. say

  1784. God

  1785. you

  1786. commanded

  1787. it

  1788. I

  1789. heard

  1790. it

  1791. clearly

  1792. I

  1793. went

  1794. the

  1795. other

  1796. way

  1797. I

  1798. am

  1799. going

  1800. to

  1801. do

  1802. what

  1803. you

  1804. said

  1805. in

  1806. the

  1807. first

  1808. place

  1809. I

  1810. am

  1811. going

  1812. to

  1813. be

  1814. obedient

  1815. to

  1816. you

  1817. because

  1818. you

  1819. have

  1820. shown

  1821. me

  1822. great

  1823. mercy

  1824. God's

  1825. mercy

  1826. is

  1827. shown

  1828. by

  1829. his

  1830. actions

  1831. towards

  1832. us

  1833. by

  1834. saving

  1835. us

  1836. by

  1837. providing

  1838. a

  1839. big

  1840. fish

  1841. by

  1842. pulling

  1843. us

  1844. up

  1845. out

  1846. of

  1847. the

  1848. depths

  1849. of

  1850. sin

  1851. by

  1852. giving

  1853. us

  1854. daily

  1855. pieces

  1856. of

  1857. mercy

  1858. and

  1859. grace

  1860. but

  1861. he

  1862. also

  1863. shows

  1864. us

  1865. mercy

  1866. by

  1867. allowing

  1868. us

  1869. to be

  1870. part

  1871. of

  1872. what

  1873. he

  1874. is

  1875. doing

  1876. by

  1877. inviting

  1878. somebody

  1879. like

  1880. Jonah

  1881. to be

  1882. used

  1883. by

  1884. God

  1885. to

  1886. go

  1887. to

  1888. Nineveh

  1889. he

  1890. invites

  1891. him

  1892. he

  1893. gave

  1894. him

  1895. a

  1896. second

  1897. chance

  1898. and

  1899. you

  1900. and

  1901. I

  1902. are

  1903. invited

  1904. by

  1905. God

  1906. to

  1907. join

  1908. in

  1909. what

  1910. he

  1911. is

  1912. doing

  1913. he

  1914. we're

  1915. we're

  1916. shown

  1917. mercy

  1918. we're

  1919. shown

  1920. grace

  1921. by

  1922. God

  1923. not

  1924. just

  1925. in

  1926. salvation

  1927. but

  1928. in

  1929. life

  1930. as

  1931. we

  1932. try

  1933. to

  1934. live

  1935. this

  1936. as

  1937. we

  1938. try

  1939. to

  1940. pursue

  1941. God

  1942. I

  1943. want

  1944. to

  1945. close

  1946. with

  1947. this

  1948. look

  1949. at

  1950. verse

  1951. eight

  1952. it

  1953. seems

  1954. to

  1955. not

  1956. fit

  1957. in

  1958. the

  1959. text

  1960. in

  1961. the

  1962. context

  1963. of

  1964. the

  1965. rest

  1966. of

  1967. the

  1968. prayer

  1969. those

  1970. who

  1971. pay

  1972. regard

  1973. to

  1974. vain

  1975. idols

  1976. forsake

  1977. their

  1978. hope

  1979. of

  1980. steadfast

  1981. love

  1982. it's

  1983. it's

  1984. most

  1985. commentators

  1986. say that

  1987. Jonah is

  1988. speaking to

  1989. Israel

  1990. as he's

  1991. a prophet

  1992. to

  1993. to

  1994. Israel

  1995. and

  1996. right now

  1997. Israel

  1998. at this

  1999. time

  2000. is not

  2001. a God

  2002. fearing

  2003. land

  2004. they're

  2005. idol

  2006. worshippers

  2007. !

  2008. and

  2009. disobedient

  2010. they have

  2011. fallen away

  2012. from being

  2013. in the

  2014. favor

  2015. of the

  2016. Lord

  2017. so

  2018. so

  2019. how

  2020. does

  2021. this

  2022. fit?

  2023. Jonah

  2024. has been

  2025. shown

  2026. God's

  2027. mercy

  2028. Jonah

  2029. rejoices

  2030. in

  2031. God's

  2032. mercy

  2033. he

  2034. worships

  2035. he

  2036. commits

  2037. to

  2038. to

  2039. do

  2040. what

  2041. God

  2042. had

  2043. commanded

  2044. and

  2045. then

  2046. he

  2047. kind

  2048. of

  2049. gets

  2050. the

  2051. word

  2052. of

  2053. the

  2054. Lord

  2055. revved

  2056. up

  2057. again

  2058. Israel

  2059. listen

  2060. those

  2061. who

  2062. pay

  2063. regard

  2064. to

  2065. vain

  2066. idols

  2067. forsake

  2068. their

  2069. hope

  2070. of

  2071. steadfast

  2072. love

  2073. those

  2074. who

  2075. are

  2076. disobedient

  2077. who

  2078. follow

  2079. themselves

  2080. in

  2081. their

  2082. own

  2083. desires

  2084. because

  2085. I

  2086. didn't

  2087. want

  2088. to

  2089. go

  2090. to

  2091. Nineveh

  2092. I

  2093. paid

  2094. regard

  2095. to

  2096. vain

  2097. idols

  2098. forsake

  2099. their

  2100. hope

  2101. of

  2102. steadfast

  2103. love

  2104. I

  2105. almost

  2106. died

  2107. !

  2108. But

  2109. God

  2110. showed

  2111. me

  2112. mercy

  2113. most

  2114. likely

  2115. he's

  2116. talking

  2117. to

  2118. Israel

  2119. but

  2120. guys

  2121. he's

  2122. talking

  2123. to

  2124. you

  2125. and

  2126. me

  2127. as

  2128. well

  2129. Solomon

  2130. described

  2131. vanity

  2132. as

  2133. chasing

  2134. smoke

  2135. you

  2136. can

  2137. never

  2138. grab

  2139. it

  2140. you

  2141. can

  2142. never

  2143. get

  2144. a

  2145. hold

  2146. of

  2147. it

  2148. and

  2149. if

  2150. you

  2151. contain

  2152. it

  2153. you

  2154. find

  2155. out

  2156. that

  2157. it's

  2158. worthless

  2159. the

  2160. value

  2161. of

  2162. it

  2163. is

  2164. nothing

  2165. those

  2166. who

  2167. worship

  2168. stuff

  2169. other

  2170. gods

  2171. feelings

  2172. things

  2173. opinions

  2174. knowledge

  2175. those

  2176. who

  2177. pay

  2178. regard

  2179. to

  2180. vain

  2181. idols

  2182. these

  2183. things

  2184. those

  2185. who

  2186. worship

  2187. these

  2188. things

  2189. those

  2190. who

  2191. find

  2192. their

  2193. identity

  2194. will

  2195. forsake

  2196. their

  2197. hope

  2198. of

  2199. steadfast

  2200. love

  2201. see

  2202. Jonah

  2203. was

  2204. shown

  2205. this

  2206. steadfast

  2207. love

  2208. God

  2209. showed

  2210. mercy

  2211. to him

  2212. and of

  2213. course

  2214. for you

  2215. and for

  2216. me

  2217. the only

  2218. way we

  2219. obtain

  2220. steadfast

  2221. love

  2222. is through

  2223. Jesus

  2224. Christ

  2225. do you

  2226. know what

  2227. the name

  2228. of Jesus

  2229. means

  2230. you know

  2231. what Jesus

  2232. means

  2233. means

  2234. salvation

  2235. belongs

  2236. to the

  2237. Lord

  2238. verse

  2239. nine

  2240. but I

  2241. with the

  2242. voice of

  2243. thanksgiving

  2244. will

  2245. sacrifice

  2246. to you

  2247. what I

  2248. have

  2249. vowed

  2250. I

  2251. will

  2252. pay

  2253. salvation

  2254. belongs

  2255. to the

  2256. Lord

  2257. Jesus

  2258. is

  2259. the

  2260. big

  2261. fish

  2262. bigger

  2263. fish

  2264. better

  2265. fish

  2266. he is

  2267. the way

  2268. that God

  2269. showed

  2270. his

  2271. ultimate

  2272. mercy

  2273. on us

  2274. God

  2275. is

  2276. merciful

  2277. and

  2278. only
