  1. Jonah chapter 4 is where we are.

    Jonah 4 chapter mention

  2. We are closing up, finishing up the series on Jonah today.

  3. !

  4. In an interview with lead singer of U2 Bono, Bono said,

  5. !

  6. I love it.

  7. I'm not talking about people being graceful in their actions,

  8. but just covering over the cracks.

  9. Our topic this morning is grace.

  10. As we close out this sermon series,

  11. grace is clearly evident in this chapter,

  12. in the story of Jonah.

  13. And I'm not talking about, like Bono said,

  14. the people being graceful in their actions,

  15. but the act of God showing the undeserving,

  16. those who have no right to or desire for grace.

  17. God's grace has been evident in this story.

  18. God being merciful and showing grace to the sailors

  19. by ending the storm and not destroying them.

  20. God being merciful and showing Jonah grace

  21. by providing a big ship and not allowing him to die.

  22. God being merciful and showing grace to the people of Nineveh

  23. by not destroying them for their evil

  24. that had, in chapter 1, come up against God.

  25. Grace is a radical idea.

  26. The definition that is thrown out a lot is unmerited favor.

  27. If grace is unmerited,

  28. as A.W. Pink said,

  29. if grace is unmerited,

  30. then none can claim it as their right.

  31. If grace is unearned and undeserved,

  32. then none are entitled to it.

  33. If grace is a gift,

  34. then none can demand it.

  35. Can't claim it.

  36. Can't deserve it.

  37. Aren't entitled to it.

  38. Can't demand it.

  39. Grace is a radical idea.

  40. In his book, Sovereignty of God,

  41. he quotes an author,

  42. doesn't give us the name,

  43. and this definition is,

  44. this statement is great in regards to grace.

  45. To feed a tramp who calls on me

  46. is unmerited favor.

  47. But it is scarcely grace.

  48. But suppose that after robbing me,

  49. I should feed that starving tramp.

  50. That would be grace.

  51. Grace then is favor shown

  52. where there is positive demerit

  53. in the one receiving.

  54. What a radical idea.

  55. Our definition fails to truly define

  56. all the weight of grace

  57. and that grace carries with it.

  58. Every moment of every day,

  59. God shows you grace.

  60. The air that you breathe right now.

  61. The car that you drove in to get here.

  62. The clothes that you have on.

  63. The fact that driving down the road,

  64. you're within four feet of oncoming traffic

  65. and you didn't have an accident,

  66. is grace.

  67. Saving grace is what we find in chapter 3.

  68. God's mercy and grace shown to Nineveh.

  69. Not destroying them,

  70. but them repenting

  71. and God showing them grace.

  72. Chapter 4,

  73. we have sanctifying grace.

  74. We have God perfecting Jonah,

  75. teaching Jonah a lesson,

  76. and God being graceful

  77. and gracious to Jonah.

  78. Saving grace is what causes us

  79. to be born again.

  80. Sanctifying grace is what God uses

  81. to perfect His children.

  82. And in this case, Jonah.

  83. So let's read chapter 4

  84. all the way through

  85. and then we'll dive in.

  86. Chapter 4,

  87. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly.

  88. What displeased him?

  89. Verse 10 of chapter 3,

  90. When God saw what they did,

  91. how they named,

  92. how they turned from their evil way,

  93. God relented of the disaster

  94. that He had said He would do to them

  95. and He did not do it.

  96. So this is what displeased Jonah exceedingly.

  97. And he was angry.

  98. And he prayed to the Lord and said,

  99. O Lord,

  100. is not this what I said

  101. when I was yet in my country?

  102. That is why I made haste

  103. to flee to Tarshish,

  104. for I knew that You were

  105. a gracious God and merciful,

  106. slow to anger

  107. and abounding in steadfast love

  108. and relenting from disaster.

  109. Therefore now, O Lord,

  110. please take my life,

  111. for it is better for me

  112. to die than to live.

  113. And the Lord said,

  114. Do you do well to be angry?

  115. Do you have any right to be angry?

  116. Jonah went out of the city

  117. and sat to the east of the city

  118. and made a booth for himself there.

  119. He sat under it in the shade

  120. till he should see

  121. what would become of the city.

  122. Now the Lord God appointed a plant

  123. and made it come up over Jonah

  124. that it might be a shade over his head

  125. to save him from his discomfort.

  126. So Jonah was exceedingly glad

  127. because of the plant.

  128. But when dawn came up the next day,

  129. God appointed a worm

  130. that attacked the plant

  131. so that it withered.

  132. When the sun rose,

  133. God appointed a scorching east wind

  134. and the sun beat down

  135. on the head of Jonah

  136. so that he was faint.

  137. And he asked that he might die

  138. and said,

  139. It is better for me to die

  140. than to live.

  141. But God said to Jonah,

  142. Do you do well to be angry for the plant?

  143. And he said,

  144. Yes, I do well to be angry,

  145. angry enough to die.

  146. And the Lord said,

  147. You pity the plant

  148. for which you did not labor,

  149. nor did you make it grow,

  150. which came into being in a night

  151. and perished in a night.

  152. And should not I pity Nineveh,

  153. that great city,

  154. in which there are more than

  155. 120,000 persons

  156. who do not know

  157. their right hand from their left

  158. and also much cattle.

  159. In the first chapter of Jonah,

  160. God gives Jonah a mission.

  161. Go to Nineveh,

  162. preach to them

  163. because their evil

  164. has come up against me.

  165. So we have God's mission.

  166. We have God's plan for Jonah.

  167. God desires Jonah

  168. to go this direction.

  169. And then we're shown

  170. that Jonah immediately gets up

  171. and runs the opposite direction.

  172. So we have man's heart,

  173. man's foolishness,

  174. God's mission and man's heart.

  175. Well, we've come full circle

  176. after God has shown mercy

  177. to Jonah,

  178. after He's shown mercy

  179. to the sailors,

  180. after He's shown mercy

  181. to Nineveh

  182. and been gracious to them.

  183. Chapter 4,

  184. we see it again.

  185. God's mission,

  186. God's desire,

  187. and man's foolishness.

  188. We're full circle.

  189. He's once again,

  190. Jonah has once again

  191. shown his true colors.

  192. In this case,

  193. after God has been gracious

  194. and merciful to him.

  195. There are four points

  196. out of our text this morning

  197. about grace.

  198. I'll read them off

  199. and then we'll go through them.

  200. Grace is not justice.

  201. Grace is not found

  202. in temporal, physical things.

  203. Grace does not fit

  204. in our box or definition.

  205. And grace is a gift

  206. from the sovereign God.

  207. So, first point.

  208. Grace,

  209. God's grace,

  210. is not justice.

  211. Verses 1-3.

  212. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly

  213. and he was angry.

  214. And he prayed to the Lord

  215. and said,

  216. O Lord,

  217. is not this what I said

  218. when I was yet in my country?

  219. That is why I made haste

  220. to flee to Tarshish,

  221. for I knew,

  222. I knew that you are

  223. a gracious God

  224. and merciful.

  225. Slow to anger

  226. and abounding

  227. in steadfast love

  228. and relenting from disaster.

  229. Therefore,

  230. now,

  231. O Lord,

  232. please take my life from me,

  233. for it is better

  234. for me to die

  235. than to live.

  236. Grace is not justice.

  237. In fact,

  238. the antithesis of justice

  239. is grace.

  240. The opposite of justice

  241. is grace.

  242. See,

  243. justice tells us

  244. that each person

  245. should receive

  246. what is due him

  247. or her.

  248. my kids,

  249. at the earliest,

  250. maybe three,

  251. were all about justice.

  252. So and so did this,

  253. now you should punish them.

  254. Or so and so did this to me,

  255. you should punish them.

  256. Or they got three

  257. and I only got two and a half.

  258. That's not fair.

  259. People this weekend

  260. are asking questions like,

  261. how could an earthquake

  262. of such a huge magnitude

  263. hit Japan like this?

  264. They don't deserve it.

  265. Where is the justice?

  266. Our world is framed

  267. in justice.

  268. You get what you deserve.

  269. Even our capitalist economy

  270. in the United States

  271. is built on the idea of

  272. if you work hard,

  273. you work long hours,

  274. you climb the ladder,

  275. then you're given a reward.

  276. Justice.

  277. But justice can only go so far.

  278. We are sinful creatures

  279. with self-preservation

  280. as one of our life values.

  281. Dennis Holia,

  282. a television host

  283. for PBS

  284. and other channels like that,

  285. said,

  286. expecting the world

  287. to treat you fairly

  288. because you are a good person

  289. is a little like

  290. expecting a bull

  291. not to attack

  292. because you are a vegetarian.

  293. That's pretty good.

  294. Let me put that

  295. on my Facebook wall.

  296. Expecting the world

  297. to treat you fairly

  298. because you are a good person

  299. is a little like

  300. expecting a bull

  301. not to attack

  302. because you are a vegetarian.

  303. He's right.

  304. Though justice

  305. is what we try to live by,

  306. it isn't always right.

  307. In fact,

  308. it fails more than

  309. we care to admit.

  310. In chapter 4,

  311. Jonah's complaints to God,

  312. Jonah being displeased

  313. and being angry,

  314. are rooted in justice.

  315. God,

  316. how evil have they been

  317. to Israel?

  318. How harsh and cruel

  319. have they been?

  320. They deserve destruction.

  321. But God shows grace

  322. when Jonah felt

  323. justice needed to be delivered.

  324. Jonah becomes angry

  325. about this grace

  326. that God showed Nineveh.

  327. In fact,

  328. Jonah literally hated

  329. what God had done.

  330. He hated it.

  331. His cause for anger

  332. and hatred

  333. is chapter 3.

    Isaiah 3 chapter mention

  334. I hate

  335. that you've not

  336. shown them mercy.

  337. And Jonah believed

  338. because of their past actions,

  339. because of how cruel

  340. they've been,

  341. they deserved

  342. destruction.

  343. But see,

  344. grace

  345. is not based

  346. on what we think.

  347. Grace is not

  348. based on justice.

  349. Grace is based

  350. completely

  351. on God.

  352. And praise God

  353. for it.

  354. Praise God

  355. for His grace

  356. and that He

  357. is the author

  358. and the creator

  359. of that grace.

  360. Now,

  361. the funny thing is,

  362. is Jonah's angry.

  363. He's displeased.

  364. Exceedingly displeased.

  365. He hates

  366. what God did.

  367. And then he

  368. tries to blame

  369. God

  370. for his sinful choices.

  371. He tries

  372. to blame God.

  373. I ran

  374. because I knew

  375. you were going

  376. to do this.

  377. I knew

  378. you were going

  379. to be merciful,

  380. so I split

  381. because I know

  382. better than you.

  383. I knew

  384. you were going

  385. to pardon Him.

  386. We kind of

  387. laugh at that

  388. and say,

  389. what an idiot.

  390. But don't we

  391. do that though?

  392. When sin

  393. is in our lives

  394. and either people

  395. confront us

  396. or ask us

  397. about it,

  398. we try to defend

  399. our actions,

  400. we sound irrational.

  401. We sound like

  402. babbling idiots.

  403. sin.

  404. See,

  405. sin casts

  406. blame on

  407. everyone but

  408. ourselves.

  409. And it even

  410. casts blame

  411. on God

  412. sometimes.

  413. And Jonah

  414. put blame

  415. on God

  416. for the choices

  417. he made

  418. because God

  419. was going

  420. to be merciful.

  421. And Jonah

  422. knew it.

  423. Jonah is

  424. crazy.

  425. He even

  426. says,

  427. I cannot

  428. live anymore.

  429. I can't

  430. bear to see

  431. what you're

  432. doing to

  433. those people.

  434. people.

  435. I can't

  436. bear,

  437. it's not

  438. like saying,

  439. watching a

  440. horror flick

  441. and you

  442. can't stand

  443. to look at

  444. something scary

  445. happen.

  446. Or

  447. God telling

  448. Lot not

  449. to look back

  450. because I'm

  451. about to

  452. destroy Sodom.

  453. It's not

  454. like that.

  455. God is

  456. doing something

  457. great and

  458. Jonah cannot

  459. look.

  460. Jonah wants

  461. to die.

  462. I cannot

  463. look at

  464. his grace

  465. towards this

  466. people.

  467. I can't

  468. handle it.

  469. See,

  470. Jonah not

  471. only let

  472. his view

  473. of justice

  474. through,

  475. but he

  476. also let

  477. his racism

  478. show.

  479. God,

  480. you cannot

  481. be gracious

  482. towards that

  483. people.

  484. They're not

  485. even Jewish.

  486. If you

  487. were Jewish

  488. and you

  489. have been

  490. taught from

  491. your birth

  492. that you

  493. are going

  494. to be,

  495. you're a

  496. chosen people

  497. that through

  498. Abraham you're

  499. going to be

  500. blessed,

  501. blessed,

  502. you would

  503. probably think

  504. the same

  505. thing as

  506. Jonah.

  507. God,

  508. how can

  509. you be

  510. graceful

  511. to that

  512. people?

  513. Here was

  514. God showing

  515. grace.

  516. Israel's

  517. grace.

  518. Israel's

  519. grace towards

  520. Nineveh.

  521. At least

  522. that's what

  523. Jonah thought.

  524. How dare

  525. you,

  526. God?

  527. Like when

  528. you're a

  529. kid,

  530. are you

  531. sharing my

  532. candy with

  533. my brother?

  534. Mom,

  535. come on!

  536. That's my

  537. candy!

  538. For us

  539. though,

  540. who believe

  541. that God's

  542. chosen people

  543. are now

  544. the church

  545. or now

  546. His church,

  547. we can

  548. easily fall

  549. into this

  550. same practice.

  551. That person

  552. over there

  553. is undeserving

  554. of God's

  555. grace.

  556. Or,

  557. I'm certain

  558. that God

  559. is not

  560. asking me

  561. to go

  562. talk to

  563. that person.

  564. Cannot

  565. possibly be

  566. the case.

  567. God

  568. wouldn't

  569. show them

  570. grace.

  571. That is

  572. Jonah.

  573. That is

  574. us.

  575. God.

  576. And that

  577. is God.

  578. There's

  579. the picture.

  580. Praise

  581. God that

  582. His grace

  583. is not

  584. founded

  585. in

  586. justice.

  587. Jonah

  588. was foolish.

  589. Jonah

  590. was a

  591. fool.

  592. But he

  593. was not

  594. dumb.

  595. He

  596. was not

  597. dumb.

  598. He knew

  599. that based

  600. on justice

  601. alone,

  602. Nineveh

  603. deserved

  604. destruction.

  605. Like

  606. Nineveh,

  607. you and I

  608. deserve

  609. destruction

  610. based on

  611. justice.

  612. Praise God

  613. though.

  614. Grace

  615. is radical.

  616. Praise the

  617. Lord that

  618. grace exists

  619. and that

  620. God gives

  621. us grace

  622. and mercy.

  623. So if

  624. grace is

  625. not justice,

  626. then a

  627. Christian will

  628. not look to

  629. justice as

  630. their measuring

  631. stick.

  632. So,

  633. okay,

  634. you did

  635. this.

  636. Let me

  637. see.

  638. Yeah,

  639. okay.

  640. Even it

  641. out.

  642. Let's

  643. even it

  644. out.

  645. See,

  646. what we

  647. want to

  648. do is

  649. look at

  650. everything

  651. and measure

  652. it with

  653. justice in

  654. mind.

  655. But what

  656. we should

  657. be doing

  658. as

  659. Christians,

  660. as

  661. disciples,

  662. look through

  663. the lens

  664. of grace

  665. and see

  666. what God

  667. is doing.

  668. And God

  669. will be

  670. glorified in

  671. that.

  672. So,

  673. not only

  674. is grace

  675. not justice,

  676. but God's

  677. grace is

  678. not found

  679. in temporal

  680. or physical

  681. things.

  682. This is

  683. verse 5

  684. through 10.

  685. Jonah went

  686. out of the

  687. city and

  688. sat to

  689. the east

  690. of the

  691. city and

  692. made a

  693. booth for

  694. himself there.

  695. He sat

  696. under it in

  697. the shade

  698. till he

  699. should see

  700. what would

  701. become of

  702. the city.

  703. Then the

  704. Lord appointed

  705. a plant and

  706. made it come

  707. up over

  708. Jonah that

  709. it might be

  710. a shade over

  711. his head to

  712. save him from

  713. his discomfort.

  714. So,

  715. Jonah was

  716. exceedingly

  717. glad because

  718. of the

  719. plant.

  720. But when

  721. dawn came

  722. up,

  723. the next

  724. day God

  725. appointed a

  726. worm that

  727. attacked the

  728. plant so

  729. that it

  730. withered.

  731. When the

  732. sun rose,

  733. God appointed

  734. a scorching

  735. east wind and

  736. the sun beat

  737. down on the

  738. head of Jonah

  739. so that he

  740. was faint.

  741. And he

  742. asked that

  743. he might die

  744. and said,

  745. it is better

  746. for me to

  747. die than

  748. to live.

  749. But God

  750. said to

  751. Jonah,

  752. do you do

  753. well to be

  754. angry for

  755. the plant?

  756. And he

  757. said,

  758. yes,

  759. I do

  760. well to be

  761. angry,

  762. angry enough

  763. to die.

  764. And the

  765. Lord said,

  766. you pity

  767. the plant

  768. for which

  769. you did

  770. not labor,

  771. nor did

  772. you make

  773. it grow,

  774. which came

  775. into being

  776. in a night

  777. and perished

  778. in a night.

  779. See,

  780. Jonah goes

  781. up to the

  782. east of

  783. the city

  784. on a

  785. hill to

  786. have a

  787. little pity

  788. party.

  789. He pouts

  790. for what

  791. God has

  792. done.

  793. He goes

  794. to watch

  795. and maybe

  796. a little

  797. hope that

  798. that destruction

  799. might still

  800. come down,

  801. just inkling,

  802. gosh,

  803. I hope

  804. that God

  805. just rains

  806. down fire.

  807. I'm

  808. going to

  809. sit and

  810. watch just

  811. in case.

  812. And while

  813. he's there,

  814. he makes

  815. the seat

  816. for himself

  817. out of

  818. leaves and

  819. tree branches

  820. and sits

  821. under the

  822. shade.

  823. And while

  824. he's up

  825. there,

  826. God appoints

  827. a plant

  828. for him.

  829. As verse

  830. six says,

  831. to save

  832. him from

  833. his discomfort.

  834. God

  835. certainly

  836. showed

  837. Jonah

  838. grace by

  839. providing

  840. the plant.

  841. But as

  842. we read,

  843. God also

  844. showed

  845. Jonah

  846. grace by

  847. having it

  848. destroyed.

  849. Jonah took

  850. comfort and

  851. joy,

  852. not in

  853. God,

  854. but from

  855. the plant.

  856. Not in

  857. the mighty

  858. work of

  859. grace that

  860. God showed

  861. Nineveh,

  862. but he took

  863. comfort and

  864. joy in

  865. the plant.

  866. And when it

  867. was destroyed,

  868. he was angry

  869. again and

  870. wanted to

  871. die.

  872. Between

  873. chapter four

  874. and chapter

  875. two,

  876. we have

  877. like this

  878. bipolar

  879. Jonah guy.

  880. on one

  881. hand,

  882. he's

  883. repenting

  884. and he's

  885. like,

  886. God,

  887. I'll do

  888. whatever

  889. you want

  890. in chapter

  891. two while

  892. he's in

  893. the belly

  894. of the

  895. big fish.

  896. And then

  897. chapter four

  898. comes and

  899. he's like

  900. throwing stuff

  901. against the

  902. wall and

  903. having these

  904. tantrums.

  905. And God,

  906. God,

  907. you're

  908. horrible.

  909. And then

  910. he gets

  911. this plant

  912. that shades

  913. him.

  914. He's like,

  915. oh,

  916. this is so

  917. great.

  918. This plant

  919. is wonderful.

  920. I love

  921. this plant.

  922. This plant

  923. just makes

  924. me so

  925. happy.

  926. Because

  927. grace is

  928. based on

  929. God,

  930. because God

  931. is the

  932. author and

  933. creator of

  934. grace.

  935. It's based

  936. on him and

  937. his doing

  938. and not

  939. on ours.

  940. We must

  941. not look to

  942. things as

  943. God's saving

  944. grace.

  945. Now,

  946. they're acts

  947. of grace.

  948. God gives

  949. him a plant.

  950. But is

  951. that saving

  952. grace?

  953. Is his

  954. comfort and

  955. his

  956. joy in

  957. the plant

  958. or is

  959. it in

  960. God?

  961. And in

  962. our sinful

  963. nature,

  964. we're always

  965. looking for

  966. opportunities to

  967. make us

  968. better,

  969. to make us

  970. look great,

  971. you know,

  972. and make us

  973. comfortable.

  974. And whether

  975. that's the

  976. clothes we

  977. wear or

  978. the things

  979. we drive or

  980. the degrees

  981. that we

  982. get or

  983. the people

  984. we marry,

  985. all these

  986. things are

  987. not bad.

  988. None of

  989. these things

  990. are bad.

  991. The plant

  992. was given

  993. by God,

  994. was appointed

  995. by God.

  996. But Jonah

  997. made it

  998. bad by

  999. finding his

  1000. joy and

  1001. his comfort

  1002. in it.

  1003. He made

  1004. an idol out

  1005. of something

  1006. that disappears

  1007. in a short

  1008. time.

  1009. And God

  1010. used it

  1011. to teach

  1012. Jonah a

  1013. lesson.

  1014. Jonah took

  1015. more concern

  1016. and joy for

  1017. the plant

  1018. than he did

  1019. for the people

  1020. of Nineveh

  1021. that he just

  1022. went through

  1023. and preached

  1024. to.

  1025. He took

  1026. more concern

  1027. for the

  1028. comfort of

  1029. the shade

  1030. in the hot

  1031. sun than

  1032. he did

  1033. for what

  1034. mighty work

  1035. God is

  1036. doing to

  1037. Nineveh.

  1038. The second

  1039. we look to

  1040. things or

  1041. people for

  1042. joy and

  1043. comfort,

  1044. we say to

  1045. God that

  1046. you are not

  1047. good enough

  1048. for my

  1049. praise.

  1050. This plant

  1051. or this

  1052. degree or

  1053. this house

  1054. or this

  1055. is better

  1056. than you

  1057. or this

  1058. children,

  1059. this quiver

  1060. is better

  1061. than you.

  1062. Jonah said

  1063. to God

  1064. with his

  1065. actions that

  1066. this plant

  1067. is better

  1068. than you.

  1069. Forget about

  1070. the ship

  1071. and the fish

  1072. God and

  1073. the opportunity

  1074. to join you.

  1075. Forget about

  1076. all that stuff

  1077. because you

  1078. did not do

  1079. what I thought

  1080. was best

  1081. and because

  1082. this plant

  1083. is so great,

  1084. this plant

  1085. is so great,

  1086. I worship

  1087. it.

  1088. See,

  1089. we do

  1090. this though

  1091. with more

  1092. evidence of

  1093. grace shown

  1094. to us

  1095. than what

  1096. we see

  1097. in Jonah's

  1098. life.

  1099. See,

  1100. God through

  1101. Jesus Christ

  1102. has taken

  1103. your sin

  1104. and my sin

  1105. so that we

  1106. can be counted

  1107. righteous.

  1108. He died

  1109. so that we

  1110. would not

  1111. have to

  1112. die.

  1113. And yet

  1114. we covet

  1115. things that

  1116. are temporary.

  1117. We worship

  1118. things that

  1119. don't last.

  1120. See,

  1121. grace,

  1122. saving grace

  1123. is not

  1124. found in

  1125. temporal

  1126. or physical

  1127. things.

  1128. It is

  1129. found in

  1130. Jesus Christ

  1131. who is

  1132. eternal

  1133. and never

  1134. changing.

  1135. So,

  1136. if grace

  1137. is not

  1138. found in

  1139. temporary

  1140. things,

  1141. then a

  1142. Christian

  1143. will look

  1144. to Christ

  1145. for their

  1146. security

  1147. and identity,

  1148. not in

  1149. their stuff,

  1150. achievements,

  1151. or circumstances.

  1152. Jesus Christ

  1153. the

  1154. stuff,

  1155. the plant,

  1156. is so

  1157. tangible.

  1158. We can

  1159. see it.

  1160. We can

  1161. touch it.

  1162. We enjoy

  1163. the shade

  1164. of that

  1165. tree.

  1166. We enjoy

  1167. the pleasures

  1168. of that

  1169. car or

  1170. that lifestyle

  1171. or whatever

  1172. it is.

  1173. But we

  1174. find our

  1175. comfort and

  1176. joy in it.

  1177. We find our

  1178. identity and

  1179. security in it.

  1180. We've made

  1181. a good thing

  1182. a bad thing

  1183. and turn

  1184. it into

  1185. a God

  1186. thing.

  1187. And that's

  1188. what Jonah

  1189. does with

  1190. the plant.

  1191. A plant

  1192. that God

  1193. even appointed

  1194. for him.

  1195. Even said,

  1196. hey, I'm

  1197. going to

  1198. take care

  1199. of you,

  1200. even though

  1201. you're

  1202. throwing a

  1203. hissy fit.

  1204. I'm going

  1205. to put this

  1206. over your

  1207. head and

  1208. I'm going

  1209. to shade

  1210. you.

  1211. So,

  1212. God's grace

  1213. is not found

  1214. in temporal

  1215. or physical

  1216. things.

  1217. God's grace

  1218. does not fit

  1219. in our box

  1220. or definition.

  1221. Verses

  1222. 7 and 8.

  1223. But when

  1224. dawn came

  1225. up the next

  1226. day,

  1227. God appointed

  1228. a worm that

  1229. attacked the

  1230. plant so that

  1231. it withered.

  1232. When the sun

  1233. rose,

  1234. God appointed

  1235. a scorching

  1236. east wind

  1237. and the sun

  1238. beat down

  1239. on the head

  1240. of Jonah

  1241. so that he

  1242. was faint

  1243. and he asked

  1244. that he might

  1245. die and said,

  1246. it is better

  1247. for me to

  1248. die than

  1249. to live.

  1250. God appointed

  1251. a worm

  1252. and a scorching

  1253. east wind

  1254. to make Jonah

  1255. uncomfortable.

  1256. Now,

  1257. I know

  1258. what you're

  1259. thinking.

  1260. These two

  1261. acts don't

  1262. really fit

  1263. very well

  1264. in our

  1265. view of

  1266. grace.

  1267. How can

  1268. something

  1269. negative

  1270. happen

  1271. and we

  1272. call it

  1273. grace?

  1274. But this

  1275. chapter is

  1276. the summation

  1277. is God's

  1278. lesson,

  1279. the conclusion

  1280. of God's

  1281. lesson for

  1282. Jonah.

  1283. It started

  1284. in chapter

  1285. 1 when he

  1286. told him

  1287. to go

  1288. to Nineveh

  1289. and it

  1290. ends

  1291. in verse

  1292. 11

  1293. chapter 4.

  1294. He

  1295. destroys

  1296. the thing

  1297. that Jonah

  1298. felt good

  1299. about

  1300. that he

  1301. took

  1302. comfort

  1303. in.

  1304. Just

  1305. because it

  1306. doesn't agree

  1307. with us

  1308. logically,

  1309. just because

  1310. we don't

  1311. understand it

  1312. or doesn't

  1313. make us feel

  1314. a certain

  1315. way,

  1316. doesn't mean

  1317. that it's

  1318. not God

  1319. showing grace

  1320. to you.

  1321. See,

  1322. God showed

  1323. grace to

  1324. Jonah by

  1325. teaching him

  1326. a lesson,

  1327. by teaching

  1328. him more

  1329. of who

  1330. God is,

  1331. how merciful

  1332. he is,

  1333. how his

  1334. mission isn't

  1335. just to the

  1336. people of

  1337. Israel,

  1338. how it's

  1339. to more

  1340. than that.

  1341. God's

  1342. grace is

  1343. not based

  1344. on me

  1345. or on

  1346. you,

  1347. as I've

  1348. said,

  1349. but it's

  1350. based

  1351. completely

  1352. on him.

  1353. For us

  1354. to say,

  1355. surely this

  1356. isn't God

  1357. because it's

  1358. negative and

  1359. I don't

  1360. like it,

  1361. is naive

  1362. and arrogant

  1363. of us.

  1364. We're

  1365. quick to

  1366. throw out

  1367. Romans 8

  1368. 28,

  1369. and we

  1370. know that

  1371. for those

  1372. who love

  1373. God,

  1374. all things

  1375. work together

  1376. for good,

  1377. for those

  1378. who are

  1379. called

  1380. according to

  1381. his purpose.

  1382. Do we

  1383. really believe

  1384. this?

  1385. Or is it

  1386. just full of

  1387. words that

  1388. mean nothing

  1389. to us?

  1390. See,

  1391. that's why a

  1392. story like

  1393. Jonah is in

  1394. here.

  1395. Not to

  1396. say,

  1397. look what

  1398. God can

  1399. do with

  1400. a big

  1401. fish,

  1402. but to

  1403. say,

  1404. look what

  1405. God can

  1406. do even

  1407. in taking

  1408. away a

  1409. plant,

  1410. or even

  1411. in showing

  1412. mercy to

  1413. an evil,

  1414. cruel nation,

  1415. city,

  1416. or,

  1417. look,

  1418. God can

  1419. control the

  1420. wind,

  1421. and can

  1422. control a

  1423. big fish,

  1424. and can

  1425. control a

  1426. plant.

  1427. Verses

  1428. 10 and

  1429. 11,

  1430. do we

  1431. really believe

  1432. 828?

  1433. Because

  1434. verse 10

  1435. and 11

  1436. is God's

  1437. final lesson,

  1438. God's

  1439. conclusion of

  1440. this lesson.

  1441. And the

  1442. Lord said,

  1443. you pity the

  1444. plant for

  1445. which you

  1446. did not

  1447. labor,

  1448. nor did

  1449. you make

  1450. it grow,

  1451. which came

  1452. into being

  1453. in a

  1454. night,

  1455. and

  1456. perished

  1457. in a

  1458. night.

  1459. And

  1460. should

  1461. not

  1462. I

  1463. pity

  1464. Nineveh,

  1465. that

  1466. great

  1467. city,

  1468. in which

  1469. there are

  1470. more than

  1471. 120,000

  1472. persons who

  1473. do not

  1474. know their

  1475. right hand

  1476. from their

  1477. left,

  1478. and also

  1479. much

  1480. cattle?

  1481. Do you

  1482. really have

  1483. any reason

  1484. to be sad

  1485. or angry,

  1486. Jonah,

  1487. about the

  1488. plant that

  1489. does not

  1490. last?

  1491. And that

  1492. has very

  1493. little value?

  1494. And how

  1495. should I

  1496. feel about

  1497. the people

  1498. that I

  1499. created in

  1500. my own

  1501. image?

  1502. Should I

  1503. just ignore

  1504. them because

  1505. that's what

  1506. you want

  1507. me to

  1508. do?

  1509. His basic

  1510. point is

  1511. look at the

  1512. people of the

  1513. world as I

  1514. see them.

  1515. Look at the

  1516. people of the

  1517. world through

  1518. grace as I

  1519. see them,

  1520. not as you

  1521. see them.

  1522. Have a

  1523. kingdom view.

  1524. God will

  1525. use what he

  1526. deems

  1527. appropriate to

  1528. perfect you,

  1529. to

  1530. sanctify you

  1531. for your

  1532. good and

  1533. his glory.

  1534. glory.

  1535. He's

  1536. working in

  1537. your life

  1538. now.

  1539. Bad things

  1540. happen,

  1541. but he's

  1542. using those

  1543. bad things

  1544. to make

  1545. you more

  1546. like him,

  1547. to make

  1548. you more

  1549. like Christ.

  1550. So if

  1551. grace does

  1552. not fit in

  1553. our box,

  1554. then a

  1555. Christian will

  1556. have faith

  1557. to trust

  1558. God completely

  1559. in good

  1560. times and

  1561. in what we

  1562. see as

  1563. bad.

  1564. Trust God

  1565. completely.

  1566. fourth point,

  1567. grace is a

  1568. gift from

  1569. the sovereign

  1570. God.

  1571. In chapter

  1572. four, God

  1573. shows his

  1574. sovereignty over

  1575. creation again.

  1576. Chapter one,

  1577. he did.

  1578. Chapter two,

  1579. he did.

  1580. Chapter four,

  1581. he did.

  1582. Over a

  1583. worm, over

  1584. a plant, over

  1585. an eastern

  1586. wind.

  1587. God has

  1588. flexed his

  1589. sovereignty

  1590. muscles.

  1591. And not

  1592. to show,

  1593. look how

  1594. strong I

  1595. am, or

  1596. look how

  1597. powerful I

  1598. am, but

  1599. to show us

  1600. that he is

  1601. sovereign, that

  1602. he is in

  1603. control.

  1604. God who

  1605. hurled a

  1606. wind at

  1607. Jonah in

  1608. chapter one,

  1609. who made

  1610. the sea, a

  1611. storm like

  1612. the sailors

  1613. had never

  1614. seen before,

  1615. who provided

  1616. a fish for

  1617. Jonah, a

  1618. big fish for

  1619. him to live

  1620. in three

  1621. days.

  1622. That's

  1623. crazy.

  1624. For him

  1625. to say,

  1626. fish, I want

  1627. you to spit

  1628. them out right

  1629. there.

  1630. And for the

  1631. fish to do

  1632. that.

  1633. And in

  1634. chapter four,

  1635. to provide a

  1636. plant, to

  1637. provide a

  1638. worm to eat

  1639. that plant,

  1640. and then

  1641. provide a

  1642. scorching east

  1643. wind to make

  1644. Jonah

  1645. uncomfortable.

  1646. Grace is

  1647. an act from

  1648. the sovereign

  1649. God.

  1650. The one

  1651. thing that we

  1652. see clearly

  1653. about Jonah

  1654. in this

  1655. story, and

  1656. how we

  1657. really do

  1658. relate, is

  1659. that Jonah

  1660. doesn't deserve

  1661. the grace that

  1662. God shows

  1663. him.

  1664. He doesn't

  1665. deserve any

  1666. of it.

  1667. Even in

  1668. the middle

  1669. of receiving

  1670. it, he

  1671. throws this

  1672. tantrum.

  1673. Even in

  1674. the middle

  1675. of being

  1676. defiant, God

  1677. provides a

  1678. fish for

  1679. him.

  1680. As we

  1681. know from

  1682. other

  1683. scriptures,

  1684. like Ephesians

  1685. 2, grace,

  1686. and like that

  1687. definition, is

  1688. favor shown

  1689. where there is

  1690. positive

  1691. demerit in

  1692. the one

  1693. receiving it.

  1694. So grace

  1695. is given to

  1696. those who

  1697. don't deserve

  1698. it.

  1699. God.

  1700. And the

  1701. only one who

  1702. can show

  1703. this type

  1704. of grace

  1705. is sovereign

  1706. God.

  1707. One who

  1708. is never

  1709. surprised, who

  1710. rules over

  1711. all and has

  1712. everything in

  1713. his control.

  1714. That God is

  1715. the God who

  1716. can give

  1717. grace.

  1718. And God

  1719. makes this

  1720. point again

  1721. in verse

  1722. 10 and

  1723. 11.

  1724. And I

  1725. just read

  1726. it.

  1727. You

  1728. pity the

  1729. plant for

  1730. which you

  1731. did not

  1732. labor, nor

  1733. did you

  1734. make it

  1735. grow, which

  1736. came into

  1737. being in

  1738. a night and

  1739. perished in

  1740. a night.

  1741. As we

  1742. read verse

  1743. 10, we

  1744. see that

  1745. God is

  1746. God is on

  1747. one hand

  1748. saying,

  1749. Joni, you

  1750. didn't do

  1751. any of

  1752. these things

  1753. and communicating

  1754. to him, but

  1755. I did.

  1756. I'm the

  1757. one who

  1758. made the

  1759. plant grow.

  1760. I'm the

  1761. one who

  1762. labored

  1763. in creating

  1764. it.

  1765. And then

  1766. verse 11,

  1767. of course,

  1768. follows verse

  1769. 10.

  1770. I did

  1771. these things

  1772. and I

  1773. created the

  1774. people of

  1775. Nineveh in

  1776. my image and

  1777. I will show

  1778. them grace,

  1779. whether you

  1780. want me to

  1781. or not.

  1782. God's grace,

  1783. His sovereignty

  1784. and His mercy

  1785. are all on

  1786. display in

  1787. this book.

  1788. It is no

  1789. longer a good

  1790. story.

  1791. It is no

  1792. longer a

  1793. flannel board

  1794. Sunday school

  1795. happy story.

  1796. God's mercy

  1797. is displayed.

  1798. God's grace

  1799. is given.

  1800. And God's

  1801. sovereignty is

  1802. throughout the

  1803. book.

  1804. book is a

  1805. lesson for you

  1806. and for me

  1807. about the

  1808. God who

  1809. has shown

  1810. us mercy.

  1811. On

  1812. Yom

  1813. Kippur,

  1814. the day of

  1815. atonement,

  1816. the highest

  1817. holy day of

  1818. the year

  1819. in the Jewish

  1820. religion.

  1821. At the

  1822. last moments

  1823. of the day,

  1824. a Jewish

  1825. leader will

  1826. read the

  1827. book of

  1828. Jonah out

  1829. loud for

  1830. everyone to

  1831. hear.

  1832. They listen

  1833. to how the

  1834. sea is moved

  1835. by a mighty

  1836. wind hurled

  1837. by God.

  1838. They listen

  1839. to God

  1840. saving Jonah

  1841. from death

  1842. by appointing

  1843. a big

  1844. fish.

  1845. They listen

  1846. to God

  1847. showing mercy

  1848. and grace

  1849. to the people

  1850. of Nineveh.

  1851. They listen

  1852. to Jonah

  1853. not wanting

  1854. a pagan

  1855. people to

  1856. be the

  1857. beneficiary

  1858. of God's

  1859. grace.

  1860. They listen

  1861. to the

  1862. prophet

  1863. throw a

  1864. pity party

  1865. for himself

  1866. and they

  1867. listen to

  1868. God give

  1869. his final

  1870. words to

  1871. Jonah by

  1872. saying,

  1873. I will

  1874. have mercy

  1875. on whom

  1876. I have

  1877. mercy

  1878. and I

  1879. will have

  1880. compassion

  1881. on whom

  1882. I have

  1883. compassion.

  1884. When the

  1885. reading is

  1886. over,

  1887. everyone

  1888. listening to

  1889. the story,

  1890. everyone

  1891. all together

  1892. will say,

  1893. and we

  1894. are

  1895. Jonah.

  1896. No one

  1897. can outrun

  1898. God.

  1899. No one

  1900. can outthink

  1901. God.

  1902. And no one

  1903. can decide

  1904. where his

  1905. mercy and

  1906. grace will

  1907. be given

  1908. for he

  1909. is

  1910. God.

  1911. We

  1912. are

  1913. Jonah.

  1914. Jonah,

  1915. deserving

  1916. of death,

  1917. punishment

  1918. for our

  1919. sinful

  1920. nature,

  1921. and at

  1922. the mercy

  1923. of the

  1924. Lord.

  1925. We

  1926. are

  1927. Jonah,

  1928. fools

  1929. who way

  1930. too often

  1931. look to

  1932. our own

  1933. needs and

  1934. desires and

  1935. forget the

  1936. needs of

  1937. those around

  1938. us.

  1939. We

  1940. are

  1941. Jonah,

  1942. and when

  1943. things don't

  1944. go as

  1945. planned,

  1946. throw a

  1947. pity party

  1948. over

  1949. things that

  1950. we don't

  1951. even

  1952. control

  1953. or have

  1954. control in

  1955. their

  1956. appearance.

  1957. and of

  1958. which

  1959. last but

  1960. a day

  1961. and

  1962. disappear.

  1963. We

  1964. are

  1965. Jonah,

  1966. we

  1967. are

  1968. Nineveh,

  1969. and we

  1970. are the

  1971. sailors,

  1972. and we

  1973. are at

  1974. the mercy

  1975. of a

  1976. merciful

  1977. God

  1978. who is,

  1979. as

  1980. Jonah

  1981. tells us

  1982. in

  1983. verse

  1984. 2,

  1985. who is

  1986. gracious

  1987. and

  1988. merciful,

  1989. slow

  1990. to

  1991. anger,

  1992. and abounding

  1993. in steadfast

  1994. love,

  1995. and relenting

  1996. from

  1997. disaster.

  1998. If we

  1999. are

  2000. Jonah,

  2001. then let's

  2002. learn from

  2003. the original

  2004. Jonah,

  2005. and join

  2006. God in

  2007. what He

  2008. is doing.

  2009. Let's

  2010. love those

  2011. around us

  2012. no matter

  2013. the differences

  2014. we have.

  2015. And let's

  2016. be gracious

  2017. as God

  2018. has been

  2019. gracious

  2020. towards

  2021. us.

  2022. Pray with

  2023. me.

  2024. Amen.

  2025. Amen.

  2026. Amen.

  2027. Amen.
