  1. We live in a time when God's people desperately need to repent of their sin and turn back to him.

  2. The spiritual climate of America is one of decay, where many people are religious, but very few are disciples of Christ, embracing the high cost of the grace that's been given to them.

  3. We live in a day when evangelical Christians question the very basic doctrines of the Bible and lead untold thousands away from the cross of Christ in so doing.

  4. America needs revival.

  5. We need revival.

  6. We need to abandon our pettiness and our comfort, the worship of stuff and ourselves in order to fix our gaze fully on Christ.

  7. And subsequently, the mission that he's given us to the world.

  8. And that's why I believe that we've been led by God to study Paul's letter to the Romans, because the good news of Jesus Christ is what we need to hear to restore our affections for him.

  9. And it is the good news of Jesus Christ that this world needs to have peace with God and the salvation of their souls.

  10. Paul gives us the theme of his letter to the Romans in chapter one, verses 16 and 17.

  11. Let me ask you to turn there if you're not already.

  12. Paul writes in verse 16.

  13. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

  14. For in it, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith.

  15. As it is written, the righteous shall live by faith.

  16. So there's the theme for us of the book of Romans.

  17. It is the gospel.

  18. An anonymous poet wrote this great poem that I think reflects pretty accurately what Romans is trying to portray and get across.

  19. He wrote, oh, long and dark, the stairs I trod with trembling feet to find my God, gaining a foothold bit by bit, then slipping back and losing it.

  20. Never progressing, striving still with weakening grasp and faltering will, bleeding to climb to God while he serenely smiled, unnoting me.

  21. Then came a certain time when I loosened my hold and fell thereby down to the lowest steps.

  22. My fall is if I had not climbed at all.

  23. Now, when I lay despairing there, listen, a footfall on the stair on that same stair where I afraid faltered and fell and lay dismayed and low when hope had ceased to be.

  24. My God came down the stairs to me.

  25. So we know quite a lot about Paul's life.

  26. We're going to get into a bit of that later.

  27. And we know a lot about the occasion and the setting for the book of Romans.

  28. There's some debate over exactly when it was written.

  29. You'll either hear late A.D. 57 or early A.D. 58.

  30. I don't think it really matters.

  31. We know that he was in Corinth at the time of the writing and he was anticipating going to Rome and actually passing through it to go on to Spain.

  32. The church in Rome had not been established by any apostle.

  33. They believe that that Jews who traveled to and were at the day of Pentecost, heard the gospel, received the gospel and went back to Rome.

  34. And so Paul is coming, writing to them to say, I want to fix some things that are going on with you.

  35. I want to give to you a synopsis.

  36. I want to give you a systematic theology so that you have apostolic teaching on which to build your church.

  37. So he writes a pretty exhaustive presentation of the gospel.

  38. And I broke it down for you into four sections.

  39. Roughly, I think these are fairly accurate.

  40. Firstly, Paul presents our need, humanity's need for justification through faith because of their sin.

  41. In chapter 118 through 425, he argues that none of us are righteous, that all of us, because of original sin, have no good thing in and of ourselves.

  42. And therefore, we deserve the just condemnation of God.

  43. All of us, apart from Christ, stand before God condemned to hell.

  44. Which does exist, in case you were wondering.

  45. Secondly, Paul develops the results of justification through faith in terms of both present experience and future hope.

  46. Chapter 5 through chapter 8, the end of chapter 8.

  47. So, as we now are Christians, standing in a right place with God, seen as righteous before Him because of the redemptive work of Christ,

  48. what does that mean both in our present experience, how is it that we experience God and His joy now,

  49. and what is the hope that is to come as a result?

  50. Thirdly, Paul expresses sorrow that many Israelites have not accepted the gospel,

  51. and he wrestles with the theological implications of this fact in chapters 9 through 11.

  52. There will be some of the more difficult chapters that we'll deal with in our study.

  53. Fourthly, Paul concludes by describing how the gospel should affect our everyday lives.

  54. So, not just doctrine for doctrine's sake, but what do we do then with all these great truths that are in Romans?

  55. So, we believe that if we study this book faithfully,

  56. the Spirit of God will use our study to yield fruit in our lives and the lives of the souls we contact every day.

  57. God had used Paul's letter to the Romans in mighty ways in the past.

  58. In mighty ways in the past.

  59. In AD 386, a man took up a scroll of the book of Romans and read from it,

  60. chapter 13, verses 13 and 14.

  61. He later wrote of the occasion,

  62. That man was Aurelius Augustine.

  63. You might know him as Saint Augustine of Hippo.

  64. He was a great defender of the doctrines of the sovereignty of God and of election.

  65. A thousand years later, an Augustinian monk was teaching the book of Romans to his students.

  66. And struggled with the expression found in verse 17,

  67. The righteousness of God.

  68. When he finally came to understand it, he wrote,

  69. The whole of Scripture took on a new meaning.

  70. And whereas before the righteousness of God had filled me with hate,

  71. Now it became to me inexpressibly sweet in greater love.

  72. This passage of Paul became to me a gateway to heaven.

  73. That guy was Martin Luther, who was the father of the Protestant Reformation.

  74. Because of his understanding, the biblical doctrine of justification by faith alone.

  75. We all find our roots in Martin Luther and that movement of God through his life.

  76. Several centuries later, another man would record the account of his salvation in these words.

  77. I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street,

  78. Where one was reading Luther's preface to the epistle to the Romans.

  79. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ,

  80. I felt my heart strangely warmed.

  81. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for my salvation.

  82. And an assurance was given to me that had taken me, that he had taken away my sins,

  83. even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.

  84. And that guy's name was John Wesley.

  85. And if you know much about his life, you know that thousands and thousands came to Christ as a result of his ministry.

  86. I'm not trying to say to you that Romans is somehow a magical book.

  87. That if we spend the next two years studying through it together,

  88. that God will form a movement in us like he did with his name.

  89. Because obviously God is the one who does the work.

  90. But what I do know is that the power of God dwells in his word.

  91. And if we will study it faithfully, if we will come to it honestly,

  92. if we will examine our lives by it,

  93. God will do some work amongst us.

  94. I long to join this great lineage.

  95. I would love somewhere down the road, a hundred years from now,

  96. somebody to say,

  97. and a church one day studied this book.

  98. When Christ Family Church studied Romans together,

  99. there ignited a flame amongst them that spread from their little congregation to North Georgia.

  100. And we have yet to see that flame be extinguished.

  101. That's what I want people to say of us as we study through the book of Romans.

  102. Let's talk a little bit about the man, Paul the man.

  103. Now you know, if you have read much of your Bible,

  104. that Paul used to be called Saul.

  105. And it's always an assumption that Paul's name was changed.

  106. That somewhere along the way, after his conversion,

  107. that God gave him a new name,

  108. much as he had given Abram the name Abraham.

  109. Do you know that's not actually the case?

  110. You know that Saul was Paul's Jewish name,

  111. but that he was also given the Greek name Paul.

  112. He was named Saul after the king of Israel, Saul.

  113. So he could be accepted in those circles.

  114. And he was given the name Paul to be accepted amongst the Gentiles.

  115. So we see his name transition in Scripture to Paul because of his mission to the Gentiles.

  116. He began to go by that name to be able to hang out with them.

  117. I thought that was rather fascinating.

  118. So I'm just going to use the word Paul.

  119. Now, just don't be hating me because of that.

  120. Paul was born to a Roman father and a Jewish mother in the city of Tarsus.

  121. Tarsus was located on the northeastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea

  122. in what is now modern-day Turkey

  123. and was the center of learning and culture.

  124. Tarsus contained one of the three greatest Roman universities.

  125. So it was a pretty thriving town, a place where Greek life happened.

  126. As a boy, Paul was more than likely trained in Greco-Roman literature and logic

  127. because we see evidence of that in his writing.

  128. And then probably at the age of 13,

  129. we know none of this for fact,

  130. but probably at the age of 13,

  131. because that was the custom,

  132. he was sent to Jerusalem to be educated

  133. by a man named Hillel,

  134. who was the grandson of Gamaliel.

  135. Now, this is really important

  136. because he was the most famous rabbi of the time.

  137. The Jews actually didn't really use their scripture all that often in this time,

  138. but they used the writings of the rabbis

  139. to understand what the scripture said.

  140. You'll hear Jesus say in the Sermon on the Mount,

  141. you have heard it said.

  142. And what he's referring to are the writings of the rabbis.

  143. You have heard it said,

  144. you shall love your neighbor.

  145. Then he corrects after that.

  146. Okay?

  147. So, that's what's going on.

  148. Gamaliel was actually said to embody the Mosaic Law.

  149. That's how famous he was.

  150. So, Paul was being educated by the greatest of rabbis

  151. when he went to be educated by Gamaliel's son, Hillel.

  152. It's believed that Paul, after his education,

  153. actually returned to Tarsus,

  154. where he served as a rabbi there,

  155. because he learned his father's trade.

  156. We know that he was a tent maker by trade,

  157. and he more than likely, as he served in the synagogue,

  158. was a tent maker to make his living.

  159. When Paul heard, though, what was happening in Jerusalem,

  160. heard about Jesus and what was going on there,

  161. he was enraged.

  162. Something was attacking his religious order.

  163. Very zealous, Paul was.

  164. And he returns to Jerusalem.

  165. You'll remember that he's actually the one standing there

  166. with everybody's coats at his feet

  167. as he hears the gospel presentation of Stephen,

  168. and then everyone stoned Stephen to death.

  169. Paul stood and observed that.

  170. And he was absolutely driven,

  171. so zealous that he was driven

  172. to destroy anybody who claimed Christ.

  173. In Acts chapter 9, verses 1 and 2,

    Acts 9:1

  174. it's recorded,

  175. But Saul, still breathing threats and murder

  176. against the disciples of the Lord,

  177. went to the high priest

  178. and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus,

  179. so that if he found any belonging to the way,

  180. men or women,

  181. he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

  182. And the wording there,

  183. but Saul, still breathing threats and murder

  184. against the disciples,

  185. as if that was the fire that was kindling who he was.

  186. That he hated disciples of the way.

  187. He betrayed his God,

  188. and he was bent on destroying it.

  189. So much so,

  190. that he was going to take a missionary journey

  191. to another town, Damascus,

  192. a large town,

  193. and he heard things were going on there.

  194. People were following the way,

  195. as it's called here.

  196. They were following Christ.

  197. So he requested letters

  198. to go and to persecute the Christians there.

  199. And so we know the story.

  200. I hope we know the story

  201. of Paul on the Damascus road.

  202. And I would ask you to turn to Acts chapter 9

    Acts 9 chapter mention

  203. as we look at this together.

  204. Acts chapter 9, verses 3 through 9.

    Acts 9:3–9

  205. Verse 3.

  206. Now as he went on his way,

  207. he approached Damascus,

  208. and suddenly a light from heaven

  209. flashed around him.

  210. And falling to the ground,

  211. he heard a voice saying to him,

  212. Saul, Saul,

  213. why are you persecuting me?

  214. And he said,

  215. Who are you, Lord?

  216. And he said,

  217. I am Jesus,

  218. whom you are persecuting.

  219. But rise and enter the city,

  220. and you will be told

  221. what you are to do.

  222. The men who were traveling with him

  223. stood speechless,

  224. hearing the voice,

  225. but seeing no one.

  226. Saul rose from the ground,

  227. and although his eyes were opened,

  228. he saw nothing.

  229. So they led him by the hand

  230. and brought him into Damascus.

  231. And for three days

  232. he was without sight,

  233. and neither ate nor drank.

  234. Now later on,

  235. as Paul is giving his defense

  236. before King Agrippa

  237. in Acts chapter 26,

    Acts 26 chapter mention

  238. he adds a little more of the dialogue.

  239. So we've got a brief version

  240. of the dialogue

  241. between him and Christ here.

  242. So he adds a little more detail

  243. to that dialogue

  244. in verse 14 of chapter 26.

  245. And he says,

  246. Jesus said to him,

  247. Saul, Saul,

  248. why are you persecuting me?

  249. It is hard for you

  250. to kick against the goads.

  251. It is hard for you

  252. to kick against the goads.

  253. That's a very foreign term to us.

  254. So to explain it,

  255. a goad was a long pointed stick,

  256. and it was used to herd

  257. stubborn livestock,

  258. such as oxen.

  259. It was just a big pointed stick,

  260. and it was used to prod oxen,

  261. big stubborn animals,

  262. as to where they should go.

  263. And in Greek culture,

  264. it had become a common term

  265. to say,

  266. hard to kick against the goads.

  267. It's hard to kick against the goads.

  268. And it was a common expression

  269. used to indicate

  270. opposition to deity.

  271. All right?

  272. So I say to John,

  273. John,

  274. my crops are just not coming in this year.

  275. The rains,

  276. there just haven't been

  277. as much water as we need.

  278. And John would say to me,

  279. it's hard to kick against the goads.

  280. What can you do against God?

  281. And this is the expression

  282. that Jesus uses

  283. to talk to Paul.

  284. Right?

  285. Opposition to deity.

  286. Saul had doubtlessly heard this term

  287. on the streets

  288. where he lived in Tarsus.

  289. He knew what it meant.

  290. Now imagine,

  291. I had always read this story before,

  292. and just like,

  293. yeah, yeah,

  294. oh, really?

  295. Jesus is the way?

  296. Okay, cool.

  297. That's kind of how I read it.

  298. Like, Paul was just doing

  299. the wrong thing,

  300. and suddenly he was doing

  301. the right thing.

  302. But he was very zealously

  303. pursuing the wrong thing.

  304. Right?

  305. Think about this man

  306. and his education.

  307. And from the age of 13,

  308. he's been trained to be a rabbi

  309. under the most famous

  310. of rabbis of the time,

  311. Hillel,

  312. who was the grandson

  313. of Gamaliel.

  314. He was a Jew among Jews.

  315. He records that later for us

  316. in Philippians.

  317. He was devoted

  318. in every way

  319. to the way he thought

  320. was right,

  321. to his religion.

  322. So zealous.

  323. So much so,

  324. not that he was just

  325. going to stand his ground

  326. in Tarsus

  327. and teach his congregants

  328. in the synagogue

  329. that this Jesus

  330. wasn't the way.

  331. So zealous

  332. that he was going to go

  333. and actually abolish

  334. that thing

  335. that was attacking

  336. his religion.

  337. He was going

  338. full force after it,

  339. running in a direction.

  340. And then he meets

  341. the Christ on the road

  342. who says to him,

  343. you are living

  344. in opposition

  345. to the God

  346. you say you serve.

  347. Blow your mind, right?

  348. I think some of us

  349. might even stand

  350. in that place today,

  351. being found righteous

  352. in Christ,

  353. but pursuing

  354. all these things,

  355. doing all this stuff,

  356. devoted

  357. to discipleship

  358. and going to Bible studies

  359. and singing songs

  360. with our eyes closed

  361. and our hands in the air.

  362. But we're going

  363. directly against

  364. our God.

  365. We don't worship him

  366. with our hearts.

  367. We worship him

  368. with petty

  369. outward expression.

  370. So Paul

  371. heads to Damascus

  372. as he was told to do

  373. and he's visited

  374. by a man named Ananias

  375. who God sent to him

  376. who restores his sight

  377. and baptizes him.

  378. And Paul gives us

  379. a little summary

  380. of this experience

  381. in 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  382. chapter 1.

  383. And I'm just going

  384. to read it to you.

  385. If you'll just listen to me.

  386. This is verses 12 through 15.

  387. Paul writes,

  388. Love does win,

  389. doesn't it?

  390. The saying is trustworthy

  391. and deserving

  392. of full acceptance

  393. that Christ Jesus

  394. came into the world

  395. to save sinners

  396. of whom

  397. I am the foremost.

  398. Do you see Paul's

  399. opinion of himself?

  400. Look at who I was.

  401. A blasphemer,

  402. a persecutor,

  403. an insolent

  404. opponent

  405. of God.

  406. Paul ranks himself

  407. above us

  408. but wrongly.

  409. Right?

  410. Paul was no worse

  411. than any of us.

  412. Now amazingly,

  413. this blows my mind,

  414. amazingly,

  415. Paul in this

  416. zealous character

  417. that he had

  418. to pursue

  419. at all costs,

  420. he continues

  421. to do that.

  422. He continues

  423. to do that.

  424. And that's chapter 9

  425. verse 20

  426. says,

  427. And immediately

  428. he proclaimed Jesus

  429. in the synagogue

  430. saying,

  431. He is the Son of God.

  432. And all who heard him

  433. were amazed

  434. and said,

  435. Is this not the man

  436. who made havoc

  437. in Jerusalem

  438. of those who called

  439. upon this name?

  440. And has he not

  441. come here

  442. for this purpose

  443. to bring them

  444. bound before

  445. the chief priests?

  446. But Saul increased

  447. all the more

  448. in strength

  449. and confounded

  450. the Jews

  451. who lived in Damascus

  452. by proving

  453. that Jesus

  454. was the Christ.

  455. So he continues

  456. to be intense.

  457. But he goes

  458. to those very same

  459. synagogues

  460. where he had intended

  461. to bind up

  462. these people

  463. and take them

  464. before the chief

  465. priest

  466. to be killed

  467. and begin

  468. proclaiming

  469. the name of Christ.

  470. That's awesome.

  471. What a great work

  472. God did in his life.

  473. After a couple

  474. of narrow escapes,

  475. Paul became so good

  476. at this gospel

  477. presentation

  478. that the men

  479. who were traveling

  480. with him

  481. to persecute Christians

  482. turned to kill him.

  483. And after a couple

  484. of narrow escapes,

  485. which are recorded

  486. in Galatians,

  487. he goes to Arabia

  488. for three years.

  489. He writes

  490. in verse 11

  491. and 12 of Galatians,

  492. For I would have you know,

  493. brothers,

  494. that the gospel

  495. that was preached

  496. by me

  497. is not man's gospel.

  498. For I did not receive

  499. it from any man,

  500. nor was I taught it,

  501. for I received it

  502. through a revelation

  503. of Jesus Christ.

  504. So he goes away

  505. for three years

  506. and he communes

  507. with Christ

  508. and he learns

  509. this gospel.

  510. It's one of the amazing

  511. things about our Bibles

  512. that our record

  513. of what Paul taught

  514. is the same

  515. as what Peter taught

  516. and the other apostles.

  517. It's phenomenal

  518. work of God

  519. in that.

  520. So this is the gospel

  521. that he's speaking

  522. about here

  523. in 16 chapters.

  524. That's the presentation

  525. that he's giving

  526. to us.

  527. He wrote it later

  528. in his life.

  529. Paul's a little bit

  530. older

  531. and a little bit wiser

  532. at the writing of it.

  533. But he gives to us

  534. the simplicity

  535. of the gospel message

  536. in an exhaustive form.

  537. We should value that.

  538. I'm really looking

  539. forward to this study

  540. in case you can't tell.

  541. I think though

  542. that there are

  543. three lessons

  544. we need to learn

  545. this morning.

  546. Not to just give you

  547. a boring history lesson

  548. but there's

  549. three lessons

  550. we need to learn

  551. this morning

  552. from the life of Paul

  553. as we approach

  554. this letter

  555. that he wrote

  556. to the Romans.

  557. Three lessons

  558. from the life of Paul.

  559. Number one,

  560. we should study it.

  561. Paul's life

  562. was saturated

  563. with knowledge

  564. of the scriptures.

  565. Now when I say that

  566. of course I mean

  567. the Old Testament scriptures

  568. the process

  569. of this being written

  570. the New Testament

  571. which we all value

  572. so highly

  573. is still in play

  574. but he was saturated

  575. with the knowledge

  576. of it.

  577. He quotes

  578. in the book of Romans

  579. the Old Testament

  580. 57 times.

  581. Isn't that phenomenal?

  582. 57 times.

  583. He knew

  584. the word of God.

  585. I can imagine

  586. that when Christ

  587. came to him

  588. and gave him

  589. this revelation

  590. of himself

  591. Paul felt like

  592. an idiot.

  593. How did I miss?

  594. How did I miss

  595. all that?

  596. I was blinded

  597. before.

  598. Number two,

  599. we should study it

  600. to know God

  601. not simply

  602. to know

  603. about him.

  604. This is a dangerous

  605. trap

  606. that I've

  607. fallen into

  608. on numerous occasions

  609. in my life.

  610. We should study it

  611. to know God

  612. not simply

  613. to know

  614. about him.

  615. Paul's treatise

  616. on the Christian faith

  617. is absolutely

  618. full

  619. of doctrine.

  620. Alright?

  621. But we should be

  622. very careful

  623. unless we just

  624. totally miss the point.

  625. Totally miss the point

  626. of what he's trying

  627. to do for us.

  628. So here's some tips.

  629. Simple

  630. tips

  631. from

  632. my own life.

  633. Number one,

  634. expect to meet

  635. with God.

  636. When you come

  637. here on Sunday

  638. morning,

  639. when you approach

  640. the scripture

  641. on your own,

  642. as we look

  643. at Romans

  644. together,

  645. expect to meet

  646. with God.

  647. I'm fairly

  648. recently out of

  649. college.

  650. I still have to

  651. attend meetings.

  652. Times that are

  653. arranged for me

  654. to get together

  655. with people

  656. to talk about

  657. things,

  658. to brainstorm

  659. stuff,

  660. to learn

  661. new things.

  662. And I typically

  663. treat those

  664. things fairly

  665. flippantly,

  666. as I should.

  667. Meetings at work,

  668. look over the

  669. document we're

  670. going to be

  671. talking about,

  672. have a little

  673. bit of working

  674. knowledge in my

  675. head about it,

  676. so I can sit

  677. down and we

  678. can talk about

  679. those things.

  680. Not a big deal.

  681. Just get together

  682. and have a

  683. business meeting

  684. and go on

  685. our way.

  686. But we tend

  687. to do the

  688. same thing

  689. with our

  690. meetings together

  691. as a

  692. congregation.

  693. We treat it

  694. like just a

  695. meeting we've

  696. got to go to.

  697. Right?

  698. So as long

  699. as you get

  700. your hair

  701. combed and

  702. get some

  703. clothes on and

  704. get here,

  705. that's your

  706. responsibility in

  707. all of that.

  708. Isn't it?

  709. But I think if

  710. you have in

  711. mind that you

  712. are expecting

  713. to meet with

  714. God,

  715. to learn from

  716. the Most High,

  717. you'll treat

  718. your morning a

  719. little bit

  720. differently.

  721. Now I am

  722. not God,

  723. in case you

  724. were wondering.

  725. I don't,

  726. my words that

  727. come out of my

  728. mouth are not

  729. the words of

  730. God.

  731. But we have

  732. the Word of

  733. God, don't

  734. we?

  735. And our

  736. job up here

  737. is to

  738. explain it

  739. to you.

  740. It's to

  741. further develop

  742. your understanding

  743. of it.

  744. Right?

  745. What a

  746. precious thing

  747. it is to

  748. have this

  749. and to have

  750. people who

  751. spend hours

  752. preparing to

  753. tell you what

  754. it means.

  755. So you

  756. should come

  757. expectant.

  758. What does

  759. that mean?

  760. What does

  761. that look

  762. like?

  763. What does

  764. that do

  765. for your

  766. morning?

  767. I think it

  768. starts a little

  769. bit earlier.

  770. prayer.

  771. I think it

  772. begins in

  773. prayer.

  774. I think it

  775. begins in

  776. confession.

  777. You're going to

  778. step into the

  779. throne room.

  780. This is not

  781. the house of

  782. God.

  783. God dwells

  784. within you.

  785. Certainly you

  786. ought to come to

  787. Him clean as we

  788. approach His

  789. Word.

  790. Number two,

  791. worship God

  792. in your

  793. listening.

  794. Worship God

  795. in your

  796. listening.

  797. Certainly if you

  798. expect to meet

  799. with God and

  800. you come

  801. appropriately to

  802. that, you'll

  803. be worshiping

  804. Him and

  805. you're listening.

  806. But I'm

  807. guilty of

  808. this.

  809. I sit

  810. sometimes and

  811. listen to the

  812. preaching of

  813. the Word and

  814. my mind is

  815. all over the

  816. place.

  817. I can't quite

  818. engage on

  819. what's going

  820. on.

  821. It might seem

  822. a little bit

  823. boring to

  824. me.

  825. And so I'm

  826. flipping my

  827. pages.

  828. I'm reading

  829. the text before

  830. I'm reading

  831. the text after.

  832. Sometimes I

  833. go to an

  834. entirely different

  835. book altogether.

  836. I'm like,

  837. ah,

  838. Colossians is

  839. so boring.

  840. I'm going to

  841. Psalms.

  842. I'm going to

  843. read a

  844. Psalm instead.

  845. As if God

  846. has nothing for

  847. me in the

  848. listening.

  849. As if God

  850. couldn't even

  851. take boring

  852. preaching and

  853. do something

  854. amazing with

  855. it.

  856. He can.

  857. Some of the

  858. sermons that I

  859. preach that I

  860. think are

  861. horrid, I just

  862. get done and I'm

  863. like, oh, man,

  864. what a waste of

  865. the resources God

  866. has given me.

  867. People come up

  868. to me and say,

  869. God really taught

  870. me something through

  871. what you said.

  872. You were kidding

  873. me.

  874. God's Word has

  875. power that we

  876. don't even

  877. understand.

  878. So worship

  879. God in your

  880. listening.

  881. Be attentive.

  882. Try to key in.

  883. Do everything you

  884. got to do to do

  885. so.

  886. It might mean that

  887. you don't need to

  888. stay up late on a

  889. Saturday night.

  890. It might mean that

  891. you're a little

  892. tired on Sunday

  893. morning and you

  894. need to wake up

  895. when you get

  896. here.

  897. We have coffee

  898. for that very

  899. reason.

  900. If you don't

  901. like coffee,

  902. buy Red Bull

  903. on the way

  904. here.

  905. All right.

  906. We have got to

  907. start to get

  908. away from this

  909. idea that worship

  910. is a time.

  911. It's just a

  912. certain segmented

  913. time where we

  914. sing songs

  915. together.

  916. All right.

  917. Wes is a

  918. worship leader,

  919. but if we call

  920. him that,

  921. that's the only

  922. time we worship,

  923. right?

  924. Wes is a music

  925. leader and he

  926. leads us to

  927. worship in music.

  928. All right.

  929. I worship God

  930. by preaching the

  931. word.

  932. You worship God

  933. by listening to

  934. the preaching of

  935. the word.

  936. We take the

  937. Lord's Supper

  938. together as an

  939. act of worship.

  940. I would argue

  941. to you that

  942. Aletheia Way is

  943. an act of

  944. worship.

  945. Us participating

  946. in teaching the

  947. kids, singing the

  948. songs with them,

  949. making them excited

  950. about what's going

  951. on up here is an

  952. act of worship.

  953. Our prayer

  954. together, our

  955. giving to the

  956. church is all

  957. worship.

  958. Number three,

  959. take pen in

  960. hand and take

  961. notes.

  962. Take pen in

  963. hand and take

  964. notes.

  965. That's why I

  966. provided this little

  967. thing for you this

  968. morning.

  969. I don't know if

  970. it's helpful to

  971. you or not.

  972. You know what?

  973. It's okay if it's

  974. not.

  975. You have paper.

  976. Take your own

  977. notes.

  978. It doesn't matter.

  979. If you find me

  980. giving you something

  981. like that insulting,

  982. just pretend I

  983. didn't give it to

  984. you and take your

  985. own notes.

  986. It's fine.

  987. If you put a pen

  988. in your hand,

  989. you're going to

  990. pay attention.

  991. You're going to

  992. want to write

  993. things down.

  994. How many of

  995. you have heard

  996. a sermon on a

  997. Sunday morning

  998. and by the time

  999. you finished

  1000. eating lunch,

  1001. you couldn't

  1002. have repeated

  1003. back any part

  1004. of anything that

  1005. was said?

  1006. You probably

  1007. couldn't even

  1008. give the main

  1009. text of the

  1010. sermon.

  1011. I've been

  1012. there.

  1013. It's gone.

  1014. It's gone.

  1015. It's proven that

  1016. when we write

  1017. things down, we

  1018. remember them.

  1019. And certainly

  1020. if we don't, we

  1021. can go back and

  1022. look at what we

  1023. wrote down.

  1024. So I'm going to

  1025. make an effort to

  1026. give you notes.

1027. It means I have to

  1028. be more prepared.

  1029. I made these

  1030. this morning and

  1031. I apologize if

  1032. they're not

  1033. complete enough

  1034. for you.

  1035. But I'm going

  1036. to work on

  1037. giving you

  1038. something that

  1039. helps you to

  1040. do this.

  1041. So take pen

  1042. in hand and

  1043. take notes.

  1044. J.I.

  1045. Packer wrote

  1046. in his book

  1047. Knowing God,

  1048. Knowing God

  1049. is more than

  1050. knowing about

  1051. him.

  1052. It is a matter

  1053. of dealing

  1054. with him as

  1055. he opens up

  1056. to you and

  1057. being dealt

  1058. with by him

  1059. as he takes

  1060. knowledge of

  1061. you.

  1062. Knowing about

  1063. him is a

  1064. necessary

  1065. precondition of

  1066. trusting in

  1067. him.

  1068. But the

  1069. width of our

  1070. knowledge about

  1071. him is no

  1072. gauge of our

  1073. knowledge of

  1074. him.

  1075. You catch

  1076. that?

  1077. Knowing about

  1078. God is a

  1079. prerequisite for

  1080. knowing him,

  1081. for being able to

  1082. trust in him,

  1083. place our faith in

  1084. him.

  1085. That last

  1086. sentence,

  1087. But the

  1088. width of our

  1089. knowledge about

  1090. him is no

  1091. gauge of our

  1092. knowledge of

  1093. him.

  1094. So let's

  1095. not approach

  1096. the study of

  1097. Romans to just

  1098. stack away a

  1099. bunch of stuff

  1100. in our files

  1101. about God.

  1102. Let's study

  1103. it to

  1104. actually know

  1105. him.

  1106. And then

  1107. number three,

  1108. we should be

  1109. mobilized by

  1110. it.

  1111. So we

  1112. should study

  1113. it, we

  1114. should study

  1115. it to know

  1116. God, not

  1117. simply know

  1118. about him.

  1119. And number

  1120. three, we

  1121. should be

  1122. mobilized by

  1123. it.

  1124. Firstly, to

  1125. share the

  1126. gospel with

  1127. others.

  1128. I am very

  1129. impacted by

  1130. Paul's

  1131. response to

  1132. the gospel.

  1133. He fasts for

  1134. three days and

  1135. then he's back

  1136. at it.

  1137. A baby

  1138. Christian in

  1139. our minds.

  1140. A guy who

  1141. doesn't know all

  1142. that much, but

  1143. he is passionate

  1144. and he is out

  1145. there and he is

  1146. sharing that

  1147. Jesus is

  1148. certainly the

  1149. son of God.

  1150. if we

  1151. value the

  1152. gospel, one

  1153. of the reasons

  1154. I think we

  1155. need a

  1156. revival is

  1157. that we

  1158. don't.

  1159. We value

  1160. too many

  1161. things more

  1162. than.

  1163. We need

  1164. that passion

  1165. rekindled in

  1166. us to say

  1167. look at the

  1168. great things

  1169. that God

  1170. has done

  1171. for us.

  1172. You will

  1173. talk about

  1174. the things

  1175. you love.

  1176. You

  1177. automatically

  1178. will.

  1179. Think about

  1180. yesterday.

  1181. If you hung

  1182. out with

  1183. anybody

  1184. yesterday,

  1185. what did

  1186. you talk

  1187. about

  1188. yesterday?

  1189. What did

  1190. you spend

  1191. your time

  1192. conversing

  1193. about?

  1194. It's what

  1195. you love.

  1196. I hope

  1197. that some

  1198. of us

  1199. talked about

  1200. the gospel

  1201. yesterday.

  1202. Then number

  1203. two,

  1204. secondly,

  1205. to send

  1206. others to

  1207. share the

  1208. gospel.

  1209. So we

  1210. have a

  1211. ministry

  1212. given to

  1213. our church

  1214. here.

  1215. Certainly

  1216. as people

  1217. who live

  1218. in our

  1219. communities,

  1220. we have

  1221. neighbors and

  1222. we have

  1223. co-workers,

  1224. we have

  1225. random

  1226. people we

  1227. encounter

  1228. on the

  1229. street,

  1230. classmates,

  1231. and we

  1232. have a

  1233. responsibility

  1234. to share

  1235. the gospel

  1236. with them.

  1237. And we

  1238. ought to

  1239. want to.

  1240. It ought

  1241. to be just

  1242. coming out

  1243. of us

  1244. all the

  1245. time to

  1246. share the

  1247. gospel.

  1248. But also,

  1249. we have a

  1250. responsibility to

  1251. the nations,

  1252. don't we,

  1253. to send

  1254. people out.

  1255. And I

  1256. hope many

  1257. of those

  1258. people come

  1259. from us.

  1260. But if

  1261. not, we

  1262. certainly play

  1263. a part in

  1264. sending those

  1265. people out.

  1266. Romans 15,

    Romans 15:24

  1267. verse 24,

  1268. Paul actually

  1269. writes to the

  1270. Romans,

  1271. I hope to

  1272. see you in

  1273. passing as I

  1274. go to Spain

  1275. and to be

  1276. helped on my

  1277. journey there

  1278. by you,

  1279. once I have

  1280. enjoyed your

  1281. company for

  1282. a while.

  1283. So as

  1284. he begins

  1285. to develop

  1286. some of

  1287. the practical

  1288. implications

  1289. of the

  1290. gospel,

  1291. he says

  1292. to them,

  1293. on my

  1294. way

  1295. through

  1296. Spain,

  1297. I'm

  1298. hoping that

  1299. you guys

  1300. are going

  1301. to help

  1302. send me

  1303. on beyond

  1304. that.

  1305. I take

  1306. that to

  1307. mean you're

  1308. going to give

  1309. me some

  1310. provision for

  1311. my journey

  1312. as I go.

  1313. So we should be

  1314. mobilized to share

  1315. the gospel with

  1316. others and to

  1317. send others to

  1318. share the

  1319. gospel.

  1320. So I hope

  1321. and pray that

  1322. God finds us

  1323. faithful as we

  1324. study Romans

  1325. over the

  1326. coming months

  1327. and years,

  1328. years,

  1329. I think,

  1330. probably about

  1331. two.

  1332. I pray that

  1333. we take these

  1334. great gospel

  1335. truths and

  1336. meditate on

  1337. them,

  1338. that we roll

  1339. them over and

  1340. over in our

  1341. minds so that

  1342. in conjunction

  1343. with the

  1344. Spirit's work in

  1345. our life,

  1346. they'll change

  1347. our hearts and

  1348. then subsequently

  1349. they will change

  1350. our communities.

  1351. Christ Family

  1352. Church,

  1353. God's beloved,

  1354. let's permit

  1355. God to begin

  1356. a revival.

  1357. among us.

  1358. Let's pray

  1359. together.
