  1. You guys be seated.

  2. We are continuing our study through the book of Romans.

  3. ! We are in Romans chapter 2.

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  4. ! If you want to grab a copy of God's Word.

  5. Romans chapter 2.

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  6. We're going to start.

  7. Our text this morning is verses 6 through verse 10.

  8. And it reads,

  9. He will render to each one according to his works.

  10. To those who by patience and well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality,

  11. he will give eternal life.

  12. But for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth,

  13. but obey unrighteousness,

  14. there will be wrath and fury.

  15. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil.

  16. The Jew first and also the Greek.

  17. For God shows no partiality.

  18. Pray with me.

  19. Fathers,

  20. Fathers,

  21. as we have read your Word,

  22. I pray, God, that you would speak now through it.

  23. That you would teach us that your Spirit,

  24. who is already here,

  25. who is already moving,

  26. would continue to move and work in such a way

  27. that our ears would hear a word from you,

  28. that our hearts would be changed.

  29. And because of our hearts being changed,

  30. our lives and our actions and our works will be changed.

  31. God, we need you this morning.

  32. We plead with you to speak to us.

  33. In Jesus' name, Amen.

  34. There's some great weight to these verses this morning.

  35. The truth that all of us,

  36. all of us are going to be judged

  37. and some will be in tribulation and distress forever,

  38. while others will be given honor and glory and peace.

  39. And I hate to tell you,

  40. but this is just the tip of the iceberg of theological questions

  41. that Paul is really going to start answering as we go through Romans.

  42. We're just scratching an itch

  43. that will not stop itching for quite a long time.

  44. This morning, we start dividing people into two groups or two teams.

  45. Now, do you remember a couple of weeks ago,

  46. we talked about the superiority issue of the Jews

  47. when we talked about verses 1 through 3 or 1 through 2.

  48. They thought that they were better

  49. and they put themselves in one group

  50. and everybody else in another.

  51. They thought better of themselves or more of themselves.

  52. This morning, we're going to break into two groups.

  53. We're going to talk about two groups

  54. and the only two groups that matter.

  55. The only two groups that matter,

  56. and that is righteous and unrighteous,

  57. Christian and non-Christian,

  58. believer and unbeliever.

  59. One team you can and will never leave

  60. and the other, by God's grace,

  61. you can leave and join the other team.

  62. This, for us, is kind of like the playoffs.

  63. This is like game one.

  64. Each team, each win,

  65. each team builds momentum with the win.

  66. So as we get further and further down,

  67. we end up winning the championship.

  68. And for us, that championship is Romans 8,

  69. Romans 9, Romans 10, 11, 12, onward.

  70. Right now, Paul is building a case

  71. and we're just now starting to really get into the teeth of this case.

  72. An ancient Roman ruler named Brutus the Elder

  73. had two sons

  74. and learned that these two sons

  75. were conspiring to overthrow the government.

  76. An offense carried the death penalty.

  77. At the trial, the young men tearfully appealed to their father,

  78. calling him by endearing names

  79. and appealing to his parental love.

  80. Most of the crowd there also started pleading for mercy for them.

  81. But because of the severity of the crime

  82. and possibly because they were the son of a high-ranking official

  83. and he held them hot to a higher standard,

  84. he not only ordered,

  85. but witnessed their execution.

  86. Parents, feel free to use that as an illustration for your kids.

  87. I know I will be using that with my four.

  88. Someone commented about the incident

  89. and said,

  90. The father was lost in the judge.

  91. The love of justice overcame the fondness of the parent.

  92. The love of justice overcame the fondness of the parent.

  93. This morning we're talking about judgment.

  94. As cruel and as terrible as that story,

  95. our judge judges rightly.

  96. Our judge judges based on his righteousness.

  97. He'll never get lost in the judge.

  98. For he cares about his creation.

  99. We are created in his image.

  100. And he cares so much that he does not want any to perish,

  101. but all to come to repentance.

  102. As 2 Peter 3, 9 tells us.

  103. He is fatherly.

  104. He is caring.

  105. He is righteous.

  106. But he is also just.

  107. Which means,

  108. as we've been studying through Romans,

  109. Romans 1,

  110. and beginning of Romans chapter 2,

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  111. we are all guilty

  112. for sins that we've committed,

  113. the sins we will commit.

  114. And this,

  115. this is what makes the gospel so great.

  116. This is what makes it so awe-inspiring

  117. and so much more mind-blowing,

  118. is the fact

  119. that we're all guilty.

  120. And the judge who judges justly,

  121. who judges righteously,

  122. is also merciful

  123. and cares for what he has created.

  124. You see,

  125. I know everybody in here knows

  126. that Osama bin Laden has been killed.

  127. You see in the coverage

  128. how a lot of the news

  129. used Google Earth

  130. and we were able to zoom in

  131. onto the compound

  132. and zoom in kind of to the area.

  133. Google Earth,

  134. you couldn't do that five years ago.

  135. Maybe six.

  136. I don't know.

  137. I'm kind of lost

  138. when it comes to time.

  139. But I think

  140. that concept of zooming in,

  141. we kind of need to do

  142. for this text this morning.

  143. We kind of need to start

  144. with a big picture,

  145. make a couple observations,

  146. and then close in

  147. on the text.

  148. So, big picture.

  149. Judgment is inevitable.

  150. It's going to happen.

  151. Verse 2 tells us

  152. that the judgment of God

  153. rightly falls on those

  154. who practice such things.

  155. Verse 3,

  156. if you practice such things,

  157. do you think you will escape

  158. the judgment of God?

  159. Verse 6,

  160. He will render to each one.

  161. Verse 9,

  162. there will be

  163. tribulation and distress.

  164. There's a future tense

  165. to those last two.

  166. He will render

  167. and there will be.

  168. It's going to happen.

  169. Turn to Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  170. Last book of the Bible.

  171. Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  172. We'll read a few verses.

  173. The book of Revelation

  174. is a vision given

  175. to the Apostle John

  176. concerning things that come

  177. and things that have already happened

  178. or are happening.

  179. Revelation chapter 20,

    Revelation 20:11

  180. verse 11.

  181. Then I saw a great white throne

  182. and Him who was seated on it.

  183. From His presence,

  184. earth and sky fled away

  185. and no place was found for them.

  186. And I saw the dead,

  187. great and small,

  188. standing before the throne.

  189. The books were opened.

  190. Then another book was opened,

  191. which was the book of life.

  192. And the dead were judged

  193. by what was written in the books

  194. according to what they had done.

  195. And the sea gave up

  196. the dead who were in it.

  197. Death and Hades gave up

  198. the dead who were in them.

  199. And they were judged,

  200. each one of them,

  201. according to what they had done.

  202. Then death and Hades

  203. were thrown into the lake of fire.

  204. This is the second death,

  205. the lake of fire.

  206. And if anyone's name

  207. was not found written

  208. in the book of life,

  209. he was thrown

  210. into the lake of fire.

  211. This is what's going to happen.

  212. It is inevitable.

  213. This is what is to come.

  214. So all of history

  215. is moving towards this day.

  216. Everyone dead and alive

  217. will be judged.

  218. So judgment is inevitable.

  219. Big picture.

  220. Judgment is going to happen.

  221. Another observation,

  222. big picture,

  223. is judgment will be made

  224. on all people.

  225. Verse 6 of Romans chapter 2

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  226. says he will render.

  227. So judgment will be rendered

  228. or paid on all people.

  229. In Romans chapter 2, verse 1,

    Romans 2:1

  230. it says every one of you who judges.

  231. Every one of you who judges.

  232. Verse 2,

  233. falls on those

  234. who practice such things.

  235. Verse 3,

  236. those who practice such things

  237. escape the judgment of God.

  238. Verse 6,

  239. to each one or everyone.

  240. Verse 9,

  241. every human being

  242. who does these things.

  243. Verse 10,

  244. everyone who does good.

  245. And then we have the two groups

  246. that the Jewish people

  247. divided into.

  248. Jew first,

  249. verse 9,

  250. and also the Greek.

  251. And repeats it again

  252. in verse 10.

  253. Jew first,

  254. and also the Greek.

  255. Christian and non-Christian,

  256. those who know Jesus

  257. and those who do not

  258. are going to be judged.

  259. Paul is building the case

  260. that all people,

  261. no matter who they are,

  262. from whatever walk of life,

  263. are guilty

  264. and will be judged.

  265. The man who lives in the city

  266. who used to go to church.

  267. The woman who works in a church.

  268. The homeless guy in Gainesville.

  269. The teacher who is an atheist.

  270. The tribe in Indonesia

  271. who has never heard Jesus

  272. or the gospel.

  273. The cello player in Italy.

  274. Mother Teresa.

  275. Adolf Hitler.

  276. John Calvin.

  277. All will be judged.

  278. You and me.

  279. And without Christ,

  280. we will be found guilty.

  281. And must be punished

  282. like the sons of Brutus the Elder.

  283. Father.

  284. This is where we are.

  285. So two big observations.

  286. Judgment is inevitable.

  287. It's going to happen.

  288. Second,

  289. judgment will be made

  290. on all people.

  291. But thirdly,

  292. where I kind of want to stay,

  293. where we're going to kind of

  294. camp out this morning,

  295. judgment will be based

  296. on works.

  297. Judgment will be based

  298. on works.

  299. Verse 6 of chapter 2 says,

  300. He will render to each one

  301. according to his works.

  302. Now, if you were just

  303. to say this verse,

  304. if you were just to say it

  305. just the same way

  306. that I read it to you,

  307. just that verse,

  308. you could build

  309. a works-based theology

  310. out of these ten words.

  311. No doubt.

  312. He will render each one

  313. according to his works.

  314. You could build

  315. a teaching out of it

  316. and it would be heresy.

  317. And it would deem

  318. the death and resurrection

  319. of Jesus Christ pointless.

  320. If salvation

  321. was totally based

  322. on how good we could be,

  323. of how many good things

  324. we could do,

  325. have the good things

  326. outweigh the bad,

  327. then there would be no need

  328. for a substitutionary atonement.

  329. There would be no need

  330. for Jesus to die

  331. for our sins

  332. because we could just

  333. live good and earn it.

  334. Live good and earn God's favor.

  335. Remember,

  336. in holding the atonement precious,

  337. we are holding

  338. to our depravity.

  339. We're realizing

  340. the reality of who we are

  341. and our need of God's grace.

  342. And that is biblical.

  343. So, if that's not

  344. what Paul is trying to say,

  345. what is he trying to say?

  346. Because, let's be honest,

  347. that sounds like

  348. what he's saying is

  349. if we just do good works,

  350. then we'll be judged

  351. accordingly

  352. and we'll make it.

  353. In the context of Romans,

  354. though,

  355. Paul is making a case

  356. that all mankind

  357. have been cursed

  358. from the Garden of Eden

  359. and each one of us

  360. carry the guilt of sin.

  361. As we've gotten

  362. into chapter 2,

  363. he's left no one out.

  364. Not a single person

  365. is without sin.

  366. And all of us

  367. are in need

  368. of something miraculous

  369. that we cannot do.

  370. Chapter 1,

  371. chapter 2,

  372. and chapter 3

  373. are all on a collision course

  374. for verse 21

  375. of chapter 3.

  376. They're all headed

  377. to this one verse.

  378. And then Paul

  379. unfolds that one verse.

  380. Look at chapter 3,

  381. verses 11 and 12.

  382. None is righteous.

  383. No, not one.

  384. No one understands.

  385. No one seeks God.

  386. All have turned aside.

  387. Together,

  388. they have become worthless.

  389. No one does good.

  390. Not even one.

  391. Verse 20.

  392. For by works of the law,

  393. no human being

  394. will be justified

  395. in his sight.

  396. So by works of the law,

  397. by being good,

  398. no human being

  399. will be justified

  400. in his sight

  401. since through the laws

  402. come knowledge of sin.

  403. And then we come

  404. to verse 21 and 22.

  405. But now,

  406. the righteousness of God

  407. has been manifested

  408. apart from the law.

  409. the righteousness of God

  410. has been unfolded,

  411. has been made aware of,

  412. has been laid out for us

  413. apart from the law,

  414. separated from the law.

  415. Although the law

  416. and prophets

  417. bear witness to it,

  418. the righteousness of God

  419. through faith

  420. in Jesus Christ

  421. for all who believe.

  422. This is where we're headed

  423. in Romans chapter 2,

    Romans 2:6–10

  424. verses 6 through 10.

  425. This is the context.

  426. This is kind of where we sit.

  427. So now we have

  428. what he's not saying.

  429. In order to see

  430. what he's saying,

  431. we need to bring it in

  432. a little bit.

  433. Verse 6.

  434. He will render to each one

  435. according to his works.

  436. Judgment is based on works,

  437. but salvation is not.

  438. Okay?

  439. Judgment is based on works,

  440. but salvation is not.

  441. Salvation is secure in Christ,

  442. is through Christ,

  443. is for Christ.

  444. What he's saying,

  445. what Paul is saying here,

  446. is that our works

  447. will prove

  448. which group we're in.

  449. They'll prove

  450. what team we're on,

  451. so to speak.

  452. Our works

  453. will show the world

  454. who we belong to.

  455. What Paul has done

  456. is he's basically

  457. put a giant poster board

  458. or a giant white board up,

  459. drawn a line down the middle

  460. and said,

  461. here's team one,

  462. believer,

  463. here's team two,

  464. non-believer,

  465. and your works

  466. are going to prove

  467. which side you're on.

  468. That's what Paul has done here

  469. and laid it out for us.

  470. As definite

  471. as God's judgment is,

  472. our works

  473. are just as definite

  474. in determining

  475. who we are in Christ

  476. or with Christ.

  477. It doesn't matter.

  478. It's that definite.

  479. Now,

  480. this shouldn't shock

  481. any of us.

  482. In Matthew 7,

  483. Jesus teaches on false prophets

  484. and says in verse 16

  485. and repeats it again

  486. in verse 20,

  487. you will recognize them

  488. by their fruit.

  489. Now,

  490. this is regarding

  491. false prophets,

  492. but the same is true

  493. for those who do good,

  494. who seek,

  495. as verse 6 says,

  496. for glory

  497. and honor

  498. and immortality.

  499. You will know them.

  500. You will recognize them

  501. by their fruit.

  502. And the idea

  503. of doing good works

  504. is an idea

  505. that's been preached

  506. since the beginning

  507. of the church

  508. because it's been

  509. in the word of God.

  510. Ephesians 2.10 says,

  511. for we are his workmanship.

  512. Listen to this.

  513. Created in Christ Jesus

  514. for good works,

  515. which God prepared beforehand

  516. that we should walk in them.

  517. So we were created

  518. in Christ Jesus

  519. for good works.

  520. Philippians 2.12 and 13 says,

  521. therefore,

  522. my beloved,

  523. as you have always obeyed,

  524. so now,

  525. not only as in my presence,

  526. but much more

  527. in my absence,

  528. work out your own salvation

  529. with fear and trembling.

  530. For it is God

  531. who works in you

  532. both to will

  533. and to work

  534. for his good pleasure.

  535. The twist,

  536. the mistake,

  537. is when people

  538. take verse 6

  539. of Romans 2

  540. out of context

  541. or take Ephesians 2.10

  542. without reading

  543. Ephesians 2.8 and 9.

  544. For by grace

  545. you have been saved,

  546. not by works.

  547. We as believers

  548. have a responsibility

  549. to do good.

  550. To live as if our lives

  551. have been changed.

  552. Because guys,

  553. our lives have been changed.

  554. The gospel doesn't just

  555. change your heart.

  556. This doesn't give you

  557. a new heart.

  558. The gospel changes

  559. a life.

  560. It changes the life

  561. to the point that

  562. things you used to do,

  563. you don't do.

  564. Decisions you made,

  565. you make no more.

  566. Your want-tos change.

  567. See, when the Bible

  568. talks about the heart,

  569. for example,

  570. Matthew 22.37

  571. where Jesus says,

  572. You shall love

  573. the Lord your God

  574. with all of your heart,

  575. with all of your soul,

  576. and with all of your mind.

  577. He's not talking about

  578. an organ the size

  579. of your fist.

  580. He's talking about

  581. your gut,

  582. your inner person.

  583. What makes you

  584. who you are?

  585. What causes you

  586. to make the decisions

  587. that you make?

  588. And the gospel

  589. transforms that heart.

  590. So as verse 6

  591. reads in Romans chapter 2,

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  592. He will render to each one

  593. according to his works.

  594. The gospel transforms

  595. a life so that our works

  596. then are different

  597. than what they used to be.

  598. And we'll be okay

  599. with being judged

  600. by our works.

  601. Another observation

  602. that we need to be clear on

  603. is that there is

  604. a distinction

  605. or a division

  606. between teams.

  607. And I've kind of

  608. highlighted that

  609. with the whiteboard example.

  610. You're on one team

  611. or another.

  612. That's it.

  613. Christian or non-Christian.

  614. Righteous or unrighteous.

  615. You cannot live both lives.

  616. If you have a new heart,

  617. you are a new creation,

  618. as 2 Corinthians 5 tells us.

  619. Matthew 6, 24

  620. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  621. I love the Sermon on the Mount.

  622. I don't know if you've noticed

  623. how many references

  624. we've had going through Romans

  625. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  626. but it's incredible.

  627. 624 says,

  628. you cannot serve two masters.

  629. You can't do it.

  630. It cannot be done.

  631. And it's your works

  632. that tells us

  633. which master you serve.

  634. Now,

  635. this does not mean

  636. that we'll live perfect lives.

  637. It does not mean

  638. that we'll be perfect.

  639. But it means that we try.

  640. It means that we

  641. were convicted of our sin

  642. and we repent of that sin

  643. and we continue down that road.

  644. Turn to 1 Timothy 4.

  645. This is a small observation,

  646. but it communicates

  647. what I'm trying to say here.

  648. In chapter 4,

  649. Paul is giving Timothy

  650. some instructions

  651. of being to a young pastor.

  652. He gives these instructions

  653. starting in verse 12.

  654. In 1 Timothy 4,

  655. let no one despise you

  656. for your youth,

  657. but set the believer

  658. an example in speech

  659. and conduct

  660. and love

  661. and faith and purity.

  662. Until I come,

  663. devote yourself

  664. to the public reading

  665. of Scripture,

  666. to exhortation,

  667. to teaching.

  668. Do not neglect

  669. the gift you have

  670. which has been given you

  671. by the prophecy

  672. when the council of elders

  673. laid their hands on you.

  674. Practice these things.

  675. Immerse yourself in them

  676. so that all

  677. may see your progress.

  678. Praise God

  679. that doesn't say

  680. all may see your perfection.

  681. all may see your

  682. perfect life.

  683. No, it's your progress.

  684. It's a small observation,

  685. but even Timothy,

  686. who was a pastor,

  687. who Paul discipled and led,

  688. was not going to be perfect.

  689. And you and I

  690. are not going to be perfect.

  691. But we can progress

  692. down this road

  693. of the Spirit

  694. and having a new life

  695. and a new heart.

  696. So if there's division,

  697. if there's a distinction

  698. between the two teams,

  699. let's look at

  700. what makes that division up.

  701. Back to Romans chapter 2.

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  702. So the first group,

  703. we're going to say

  704. the first group is

  705. the righteous,

  706. the Christians.

  707. And these distinctions

  708. are found in verse 7

  709. and verse 10.

  710. To those who by patience

  711. and well-doing

  712. seek for glory

  713. and honor

  714. and immortality

  715. you will give

  716. eternal life.

  717. Verse 10,

  718. but glory and honor

  719. and peace

  720. for everyone who does good.

  721. The Jew first,

  722. also the Greek.

  723. So verse 7,

  724. by patience

  725. in doing good.

  726. Patience,

  727. one of the fruit

  728. of the Spirit.

  729. So God's Spirit

  730. is on our lives.

  731. Patience

  732. in well-doing

  733. and doing good.

  734. Seek glory.

  735. Sounds selfish,

  736. but it's God's glory

  737. that we seek.

  738. His glory will be

  739. our desire.

  740. And it should be

  741. our highest desire.

  742. Verse 7,

  743. again,

  744. seek honor.

  745. Not the honor

  746. we'll receive here

  747. on earth

  748. because that

  749. feeds my flesh.

  750. That feeds my

  751. desire to please people.

  752. Even as I'm standing up here.

  753. But to not the honor

  754. that we'll receive

  755. here on earth

  756. from men,

  757. but the honor

  758. from God,

  759. like in Matthew 25,

  760. 21,

  761. where he says,

  762. well done,

  763. good and faithful servant.

  764. That will be our desire.

  765. That will be our goal.

  766. That will be what we seek for.

  767. Again,

  768. in verse 7,

  769. we'll seek immortality.

  770. First Corinthians 15,

  771. 53 says,

  772. when it's perishable body

  773. must put on the imperishable

  774. and this mortal body

  775. must put on immortality.

  776. The end result

  777. of our final perfection.

  778. Verse 7 says,

  779. God will give eternal life.

  780. Now guys,

  781. that's a simple term,

  782. but born again or not,

  783. Christian or not,

  784. we're all going to have

  785. eternal life.

  786. It's where that eternal life

  787. is going to be.

  788. Are we going to be with Christ?

  789. Are we going to be honoring

  790. and worshiping Him alone?

  791. Are we going to be in torment?

  792. As we'll see here

  793. in a few minutes.

  794. Verse 10,

  795. glory and honor and peace.

  796. And we will seek these things

  797. with our lives.

  798. And through our works,

  799. God will give them

  800. to those who do them.

  801. So that's the first group.

  802. The second group,

  803. the characteristics

  804. of the unrighteous,

  805. the non-Christian.

  806. These are found in verse 8

  807. and verse 9.

  808. But for those who are self-seeking

  809. and do not obey the truth,

  810. but obey unrighteousness,

  811. there will be wrath and fury.

  812. There will be tribulation

  813. and distress

  814. for every human being

  815. who does evil.

  816. The Jew first

  817. and also the Greek.

  818. Self-seeking.

  819. Where yourself,

  820. your desires,

  821. your

  822. yourself,

  823. I'll say that again,

  824. yourself is your God.

  825. If that is your God,

  826. then there's no room for God

  827. in your life.

  828. That person does

  829. what pleases them.

  830. No matter what,

  831. they worship

  832. whatever they feel like.

  833. Verse 8 says,

  834. does not obey the truth.

  835. If a person only does

  836. what feels good

  837. and what they want,

  838. then the obvious outcome

  839. is not to obey anything

  840. except themselves.

  841. And of course,

  842. they're not going to obey God

  843. and they're not going to

  844. obey His truth.

  845. Rebellion and disobedience

  846. is at the root

  847. of the fall

  848. in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  849. You know,

  850. Galatians chapter 5

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  851. tells us the fruit

  852. of the Spirit,

  853. but it also tells us

  854. the fruit of the flesh.

  855. It also gives us

  856. a more exhaustive list

  857. of the fruit

  858. of the flesh.

  859. The outward

  860. working

  861. of the flesh.

  862. Verse 8 says,

  863. they obey

  864. unrighteousness.

  865. As I've already said,

  866. no one can serve

  867. two masters,

  868. so

  869. you obey

  870. the other.

  871. A person is either

  872. righteous

  873. or unrighteous.

  874. He's either godly

  875. or ungodly.

  876. Verse 8 says,

  877. wrath

  878. and fury

  879. will come

  880. to the unrighteous.

  881. Wrath

  882. signifies

  883. the strongest

  884. kind of anger.

  885. The strongest

  886. kind of anger

  887. when God's mercy

  888. and grace

  889. are fully removed

  890. or fully exhausted.

  891. Wrath.

  892. Fury.

  893. Another translation

  894. says indignation.

  895. The root

  896. was used

  897. to describe

  898. of a man's

  899. breathing violently

  900. while pursuing

  901. an enemy

  902. in great rage.

  903. Breathing violently

  904. while pursuing

  905. an enemy

  906. in great rage.

  907. In Hebrews,

  908. in the book of Hebrews,

  909. it's used

  910. to describe

  911. Pharaoh's

  912. murderous

  913. fury

  914. at Moses.

  915. In Luke 4,

  916. it's used

  917. to describe

  918. the Jews

  919. in the synagogue

  920. in Nazareth

  921. who wanted

  922. to throw

  923. Jesus off

  924. a cliff.

  925. In Acts 19,

  926. it describes

  927. the pagan

  928. Ephesians'

  929. reaction

  930. when he described

  931. their idols

  932. as being worthless

  933. and no gods

  934. at all.

  935. This fury

  936. will be released

  937. from God

  938. into or towards

  939. those who remain

  940. unrighteous.

  941. Verse 9

  942. tells us

  943. tribulation

  944. and distress.

  945. Tribulation

  946. and distress

  947. for every human

  948. being who does

  949. evil.

  950. The Jew first

  951. and also

  952. the Greek.

  953. Now guys,

  954. after last

  955. spring,

  956. we went through

  957. the book

  958. of 1 Peter.

  959. We know

  960. that there's

  961. going to be

  962. tribulation.

  963. We know

  964. that believers

  965. and unbelievers

  966. are going to

  967. suffer.

  968. Believers

  969. especially

  970. are going to

  971. suffer in

  972. this world.

  973. We know

  974. this.

  975. But our

  976. hope is

  977. in the

  978. temporary

  979. nature

  980. of our

  981. suffering

  982. that it

  983. ends.

  984. It comes

  985. to a

  986. point

  987. of

  988. ending.

  989. But for

  990. the unrighteous,

  991. it will

  992. never end.

  993. For the

  994. unrighteous,

  995. it will be

  996. eternal

  997. tribulation

  998. and distress.

  999. The word

  1000. of distress

  1001. literally means

  1002. a narrow

  1003. place

  1004. and used

  1005. to describe

  1006. solitary

  1007. confinement.

  1008. Solitary

  1009. confinement is

  1010. described as

  1011. one of the

  1012. worst punishments

  1013. for people

  1014. in prison.

  1015. One of the

  1016. worst.

  1017. Imagine,

  1018. guys,

  1019. imagine an

  1020. eternal

  1021. punishment

  1022. that involves

  1023. that same

  1024. type of

  1025. torture or

  1026. distress

  1027. without ever

  1028. being lessened.

  1029. that's

  1030. what happens.

  1031. That's what

  1032. the people

  1033. who do evil

  1034. are headed

  1035. to.

  1036. For every

  1037. human being

  1038. who does

  1039. evil.

  1040. So their

  1041. works

  1042. will prove

  1043. or their

  1044. judgment

  1045. will be

  1046. based on

  1047. works.

  1048. So why

  1049. is this

  1050. important for

  1051. us?

  1052. Why do we

  1053. need to know

  1054. any of this?

  1055. If we're a

  1056. Christian,

  1057. we can just

  1058. kind of glance

  1059. over this

  1060. and say,

  1061. it doesn't

  1062. concern me.

  1063. I hope I've

  1064. proved to you

  1065. that it's

  1066. important,

  1067. but here's

  1068. four things.

  1069. The first

  1070. thing is we

  1071. need to know

  1072. what group

  1073. we're in.

  1074. We need to

  1075. know what

  1076. team we're

  1077. on.

  1078. And our

  1079. works will

  1080. tell us.

  1081. We need to

  1082. know,

  1083. secondly,

  1084. we need to

  1085. know what

  1086. others look

  1087. like on the

  1088. other team.

  1089. We need to

  1090. know their

  1091. works so

  1092. that we can

  1093. decide how to

  1094. minister to

  1095. them.

  1096. And we

  1097. can help

  1098. them.

  1099. Third thing,

  1100. works are

  1101. important,

  1102. but not so

  1103. that they lead

  1104. to salvation.

  1105. They're

  1106. important because

  1107. they prove

  1108. salvation.

  1109. They prove

  1110. salvation.

  1111. And

  1112. fourthly,

  1113. why this is

  1114. important is

  1115. the gospel

  1116. doesn't just

  1117. change a

  1118. heart.

  1119. It changes

  1120. the life.

  1121. So if you're

  1122. truly born

  1123. again and

  1124. you don't

  1125. have a

  1126. changed

  1127. life,

  1128. I'd

  1129. question the

  1130. first part.

  1131. chapter 2

  1132. verse 14

  1133. through 26,

  1134. James is

  1135. laying out

  1136. and basically

  1137. saying that

  1138. faith without

  1139. works is

  1140. no faith

  1141. at all.

  1142. Faith without

  1143. works, in

  1144. fact, is

  1145. dead.

  1146. It does

  1147. not exist.

  1148. It does

  1149. not live.

  1150. So my

  1151. question for

  1152. all of us,

  1153. for everyone

  1154. in here,

  1155. does your

  1156. works prove

  1157. your salvation

  1158. or does

  1159. your works

  1160. prove that

  1161. you are

  1162. truly not

  1163. born again?

  1164. Does your

  1165. works prove

  1166. your salvation

  1167. or does

  1168. your works

  1169. prove that

  1170. you are

  1171. truly not

  1172. born again?

  1173. That's where

  1174. the rubber

  1175. meets the

  1176. road.

  1177. It's good

  1178. to do good

  1179. things.

  1180. It is

  1181. good to

  1182. be loving.

  1183. It is

  1184. good to

  1185. be caring,

  1186. to have

  1187. mercy on

  1188. people,

  1189. to be

  1190. part of

  1191. social

  1192. injustice

  1193. groups,

  1194. and all

  1195. that is

  1196. great.

  1197. But without

  1198. Christ, it

  1199. is worthless.

  1200. Without

  1201. Christ, you're

  1202. still doing

  1203. evil.

  1204. Tribulation

  1205. and distress

  1206. is what's

  1207. in your

  1208. future.

  1209. we're

  1210. going to

  1211. be judged.

  1212. Like

  1213. the Roman

  1214. Brutus

  1215. the elder,

  1216. justice

  1217. will be

  1218. given.

  1219. His two

  1220. sons

  1221. deserved

  1222. it.

  1223. They were

  1224. conspiring

  1225. to overthrow

  1226. the government.

  1227. They

  1228. committed a

  1229. crime and

  1230. he followed

  1231. through with

  1232. justice.

  1233. But

  1234. unlike

  1235. Brutus

  1236. the elder,

  1237. mercy

  1238. will be

  1239. shown

  1240. mercy

  1241. will be

  1242. shown.

  1243. And so

  1244. we can

  1245. rejoice in

  1246. reading through

  1247. Romans chapter

  1248. two and

  1249. all of the

  1250. word of

  1251. God,

  1252. because God

  1253. is merciful.

  1254. God is

  1255. just and

  1256. he is

  1257. right.

  1258. Let's

  1259. pray.

  1260. pray.

  1261. Heavenly

  1262. Father God,

  1263. great are

  1264. you,

  1265. worthy of

  1266. all praise.

  1267. Your grace

  1268. and your

  1269. mercy that

  1270. you have

  1271. shown me

  1272. and that

  1273. you have

  1274. shown others

  1275. in this

  1276. room,

  1277. sometimes

  1278. leave me

  1279. speechless.

  1280. why?

  1281. I don't

  1282. know.

  1283. Why do

  1284. you love

  1285. me so

  1286. much?

  1287. I don't

  1288. know,

  1289. but I'm

  1290. thankful that

  1291. you do.

  1292. I'm thankful

  1293. that you've

  1294. given me

  1295. your word

  1296. and that I

  1297. can rejoice

  1298. in knowing

  1299. that my

  1300. works

  1301. prove

  1302. that I

  1303. know you

  1304. and that

  1305. I'm your

  1306. son.

  1307. God,

  1308. I pray

  1309. that you

  1310. would move

  1311. in this

  1312. room,

  1313. that you

  1314. would penetrate

  1315. the hardest

  1316. of hearts,

  1317. that we

  1318. would leave

  1319. here changed

  1320. because you

  1321. had spoken

  1322. to us,

  1323. you had

  1324. touched us

  1325. and you

  1326. had taught

  1327. us.

  1328. God,

  1329. be honored

  1330. and pleased

  1331. this morning.

  1332. In Jesus'

  1333. name,

  1334. Amen.

  1335. It's a time

  1336. of our

  1337. service where

  1338. we worship

  1339. by celebrating

  1340. what Christ

  1341. has done on

  1342. the cross.

  1343. We partake

  1344. of the

  1345. Lord's

  1346. Supper.

  1347. And guys,

  1348. if you're not

  1349. a believer,

  1350. if you are

  1351. unrighteous,

  1352. if you are

  1353. part of

  1354. team two,

  1355. there's no

  1356. reason for

  1357. you to take

  1358. this.

  1359. You're not

  1360. celebrating

  1361. anything.

  1362. You're just

  1363. taking a

  1364. drink of

  1365. juice.

  1366. But if

  1367. you are

  1368. a Christian

  1369. and are

  1370. part of

  1371. team one,

  1372. celebrate,

  1373. rejoice,

  1374. because Christ

  1375. has done

  1376. what no

  1377. man can

  1378. do.

  1379. a Christian

  1380. Amen.

1381. Hiding rock and treacherous shoal, John and compass come from thee, Savior, pilot me.

1382. Though the sea be smooth and bright, sparkling with the stars of night,

1383. and my ship's path be ablaze with the light of house and days,

1384. still I know my need of thee, Savior, pilot me.

1385. And as a mother stills her child, thou canst hush the ocean while,

1386. voice just waves obey thy will.

1387. When thou says to me, then be still, sovereign, sovereign of the sea, Savior, pilot me.

1388. And when at last I hear the shore and the fearful breaker's roar,

1389. which breaks me in the peaceful rest, then while leaning on thy breast,

1390. may I hear you say to me, I will pilot me.

  1391. I will pilot me.

  1392. I will pilot me.

  1393. I will pilot me.

1394. He was wounded for our transgressions.

1395. He was crushed for our iniquities.

1396. Upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace.

1397. And with his stripes we are healed.

1398. All we like sheep have gone astray.

1399. We have turned everyone to his own way.

1400. And the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

1401. Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

1402. Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,

1403. and whose spirit there is no deceit.

1404. This is the word of God.

1405. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1406. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1407. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1408. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1409. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1410. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1411. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1412. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1413. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1414. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1415. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1416. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1417. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1418. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1419. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1420. Blessed is the one who died of sin.

1421. Blessed is the one who died of sin.
