  1. I got to be home.

  2. Wes and I got off the airplane and we could finally control what was going on.

  3. And so we walked so quickly.

  4. And I think we were about to break into a run trying to get to baggage claim in time.

  5. Because we could finally control the pace at which things were happening.

  6. We saw people who rode the tram beat us to the baggage claim.

  7. But at least we felt like we were in control of making it happen.

  8. And I told Wes on the way home, we're not going to get home if I wreck.

  9. So I got to slow down.

  10. So I'm so eager to be back with my family.

  11. As a husband and a father.

  12. So I kind of foolishly took on the task of preaching this morning.

  13. Being on this trip and being busy, busy and going, going.

  14. And I decided at the beginning of the trip that I was going to preach a Father's Day sermon this morning.

  15. But the scope of what I want to talk about today is larger than that.

  16. Certainly includes being a father, but is bigger than that.

  17. What I want to talk about this morning is masculinity.

  18. What does it mean to be a man?

  19. Now ladies, I know that the temptation now will be to check out.

  20. There's lots of things going on in your life.

  21. You can begin to work through some of those things now.

  22. But if you are single, you should pay attention this morning.

  23. Because this is what you want to look for in a man.

  24. If you're not, you need to know how to pray for your men.

  25. Because the task that's been given to us, the special role that we've been given as men in this world is a huge one.

  26. And we need your prayers.

  27. So what does it mean to be masculine?

  28. What does that look like?

  29. Culture gives us some definition of that.

  30. We look around at fallen men.

  31. Culture gives us some idea of what that might look like.

  32. The car you drive.

  33. How muscly you are.

  34. How well groomed you are.

  35. The clothes you wear.

  36. The power job that you have.

  37. But ultimately, all these things are a shadow of what once was.

  38. Before the fall, Adam, the first man, was masculine in completion.

  39. He was a planetary king.

  40. He was given the world to rule.

  41. And then he sinned.

  42. And sin totally corrupted that nature.

  43. And in all of us men, there is this desire to get back to that place.

  44. We all carry the burden of sin.

  45. Which says to us, you are a failure.

  46. We all know that if we were set on the scale of masculinity, we would be found wanting.

  47. So all the things we do, the things that culture defines as masculine, are an attempt to get back to that place.

  48. That's why we love competition.

  49. Right?

  50. Because we want to be kings.

  51. We want to rule.

  52. We want to dominate over others.

  53. That's why we get so into sports.

  54. Because we want to even just relate to a team that's winning.

  55. Very few diehard fans stick with a team when they're losing.

  56. Right?

  57. We want to flip-flop to the team that's winning.

  58. Because we want to be in charge.

  59. We want jobs where we call the shots.

  60. We want to drive cars that make it look like we're in charge.

  61. And it's all trying to get back to that Adamic nature.

  62. We're all trying to get back to that place where we are planetary kings once again.

  63. Invincible ruling the world.

  64. Since corrupted it, hasn't it?

  65. Unfortunately, we have a way back to that place, which we'll get to soon.

  66. But for us to really understand what masculinity looks like, we have to go back pre-corruption.

  67. We have to go back before the fall and look at the creation of Adam and Eve and the way they were meant to operate together.

  68. So turn with me to Genesis chapter 1.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  69. Moses wrote the book of Genesis under the inspiration of the Spirit.

  70. In chapter 1, he gives us an account of the creation.

  71. And then he repeats that account in chapter 2 with varying detail.

  72. In chapter 1, verse 27, he kind of zooms in a bit on what's going on on the sixth day.

  73. He says,

  74. So God created man in his own image.

  75. In the image of God, he created him.

  76. Male and female, he created them.

  77. So he zooms in to say something very important to us about man and woman.

  78. And that is that they are equal.

  79. They're both created in the image of God.

  80. Both with the same rights, the same responsibilities, the same things we must answer to God for.

  81. In chapter 2, he gives us another account of the creation.

  82. Not that it happened again, but he's re-explaining some things for us.

  83. And once again, he zooms in.

  84. He zooms in tight.

  85. He gives us some details, which I believe that he was inspired to do for some specific reasons.

  86. Look at Genesis chapter 2, verse 7.

    Genesis 2:7

  87. Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.

  88. And the man became a living creature.

  89. And then verse 15.

  90. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and to keep it.

  91. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying,

  92. You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.

  93. For in the day you eat of it you shall surely die.

  94. Then the Lord God said,

  95. It is not good that the man should be alone.

  96. I will make a helper fit for him.

  97. Verse 20.

  98. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.

  99. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man.

  100. And while he slept, took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.

  101. And the ribs of the Lord God had taken from the man he made into woman and brought her to man.

  102. Then the man said,

  103. This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.

  104. She shall be called woman because she was taken out of man.

  105. So this account has purpose.

  106. The reason it was recorded for us, once again, we've seen that they were created as equals.

  107. But now we're seeing something else.

  108. We're seeing that man was created first and then woman.

  109. Why is that?

  110. Man was created first and then woman.

  111. It's to show that men are to be the leaders in our relationships.

  112. Paul certainly understood that as he wrote his letter to Timothy.

  113. His first letter to Timothy, under the inspiration of the Spirit.

  114. So let me give you a definition of mature masculinity to help us wrap our minds around what we're going to talk about.

  115. And this is stolen from John Piper.

  116. I'll give him credit where credit is due.

  117. At the heart of mature masculinity.

  118. I catch that.

  119. Mature masculinity.

  120. The heart of mature masculinity is a sense of a benevolent responsibility to lead, provide for, and protect women in ways appropriate to a man's varying relationships.

  121. I'll repeat that for you again.

  122. You don't have to write it down.

  123. Just kind of wrap your mind around it.

  124. At the heart of mature masculinity is a sense of a benevolent responsibility to lead, provide for, and protect women in ways appropriate to a man's varying relationships.

  125. So catch what Piper is saying.

  126. And I think it's entirely biblically founded.

  127. Our masculinity is measured by how we relate to women.

  128. Who we are as men is measured by how we relate to the opposite sex.

  129. The control group.

  130. The fixed thing.

  131. The comparison thereof is what makes us masculine.

  132. Otherwise, we're a closed group of men, right?

  133. What makes us men?

  134. Our bodies.

  135. The way we were created.

  136. That makes us men.

  137. What makes us masculine is how we relate to women.

  138. And the first way that we relate to women that's so key is that we are to lead.

  139. Ladies, this in no way takes away what Genesis 127 says.

  140. It's just a different role.

  141. And a man who leads properly is a man you will gladly follow.

  142. So mature masculinity leads spiritually.

  143. Now we saw up in 2.16.

  144. God gives Adam a command.

  145. You may surely eat of every tree of the garden.

  146. Verse 17.

  147. But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.

  148. From the day you eat of it, you shall surely die.

  149. So God gives Adam the moral code of the garden.

  150. And he's told Adam, work the garden, live in the garden, be fed by the garden.

  151. There's just one thing you're not supposed to do.

  152. He gives that command to Adam.

  153. Once we see Eve created, God doesn't repeat that command.

  154. He gives the command to Adam.

  155. And the assumption there is that Adam was responsible to pass the command on to his bride.

  156. We get some further evidencing of that in Genesis 3, 9 and 11.

  157. After the fall.

  158. Who does God go to first?

  159. Not to Eve, the originator of the sin, but to Adam.

  160. He holds Adam accountable.

  161. He says,

  162. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, where are you?

  163. And in verse 11, he said, who told you that you were naked?

  164. Have you eaten of the tree which I commanded you not to eat?

  165. So here Adam is given a command and he's held fully accountable for it, even though Eve was the one that sinned first.

  166. And why do you think Satan tempted Eve first?

  167. Why do you think that he went after Eve instead of Adam?

  168. Some have said it's because she was weaker.

  169. She was the weaker of the sexes.

  170. I don't believe that to be true at all.

  171. I think that Satan went after it that way because he was intending to corrupt the order that God had set aside.

  172. He was intending to go after the very thing that God had already ordered in the world.

  173. That man came first and then woman.

  174. He flipped it on its head and he stood back and laughed and said, boy, now they're never going to be able to sort this mess out.

  175. Man's going to constantly try to lord over women and then blame them for everything.

  176. And isn't that what happens?

  177. Isn't that exactly what happens?

  178. Adam says, the woman told me to do it.

  179. In all that moment, we see the whole thing reversed.

  180. Rather than leading as he ought to, he just listened to her and did what she said.

  181. So Satan knew exactly what he was doing.

  182. So mature masculinity leads spiritually.

  183. Do we do that, men?

  184. Do we lead our wives?

  185. The other women around us, that definition I read, spoke of varying relationships.

  186. Single men, do you lead those around you?

  187. Are you an example for the women around you in spiritual matters?

  188. I'm afraid that we're not.

  189. I'm so thankful that I get to preach from the word of God and I don't have to stand up here and show you my life.

  190. Except myself as the example.

  191. Because I failed in so many of these things.

  192. Do you lead your family spiritually?

  193. Are you on the front edge of leading?

  194. I doubt it.

  195. Mature masculinity also leads selflessly.

  196. Our definition says that man has a sense of a benevolent responsibility.

  197. Jesus says in Luke chapter 22, verse 26.

    Luke 22:26

  198. Let the greatest among you become as the youngest and the leader as one who serves.

  199. So mature masculinity does not assume authority, but advocates it through love.

  200. Mature masculinity does not assume authority, but advocates it through love.

  201. Ephesians chapter 5, verse 23 and 25.

    Ephesians 5:23

  202. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church.

  203. His body and himself its savior.

  204. Husbands, love your wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

  205. Do we follow Christ because he's commanded it so?

  206. That ought to be enough, shouldn't it?

  207. That should be it.

  208. Rule of the universe said to do it.

  209. We should do it.

  210. But we follow Christ because he loves us so much.

  211. The way he laid his life down for us.

  212. The sacrifices he gives.

  213. The provision he gives in our lives.

  214. That's why we follow Christ.

  215. And men, we should be the same way.

  216. Benevolent.

  217. Encouraging and leading the women around us to follow us.

  218. They will gladly follow the man that leads in this way.

  219. Mature masculinity also leads to Christ.

  220. Now, the man does not stand in the position of Christ in the church quite the way Christ does.

  221. Because he's not Christ, is he?

  222. We're kind of a caretaker.

  223. Christ has put us in a position to lead our wives and the women around us.

  224. Not to ourselves, lest we set ourselves up as Christ, but to Christ himself.

  225. So the relationship isn't exactly the same because we're not the supreme ruler.

  226. Our job is to lead the women around us to Christ.

  227. Mature masculinity leads in discipline.

  228. Fathers, do you leave the responsibility of disciplining your children to your wives?

  229. Do you stand by while they whine and complain, waiting for your wife to do something about it?

  230. Are you first in that?

  231. Do you lead in that?

  232. Do your children look at you and say,

  233. Hey, my dad's in charge around here.

  234. My dad is setting the moral code around here.

  235. I better not transgress the law of this household or else I'll receive the wrath of my father.

  236. That's a hard job, man.

  237. I've got one that just turned one.

  238. And we're getting to that constant discipline stage.

  239. And it is hard.

  240. And I don't want to do it sometimes.

  241. He breaks my heart.

  242. Pokes that little bottom lip out.

  243. But it is my responsibility.

  244. And I pray that I'm not sure of that responsibility at all.

  245. Mature masculinity not only provides, which we'll get to in a second, but it also leads financially.

  246. Men, are we an example to the women around us on how we ought to deal with our finances?

  247. I think a lot of Christian households, there's a strain.

  248. Men trying to be Adamic, trying to gain for themselves the stuff that makes them men amass things for their hobbies.

  249. And the wives who say, but honey, we can't afford that.

  250. The opposite should be true.

  251. James Dobson wrote in a book called Straight Talk to Men and Their Wives.

  252. A Christian man is obligated to lead his family to the best of his ability.

  253. If his family has purchased too many items on credit, then the financial crunch is ultimately his fault.

  254. If the family never reads the Bible or seldom goes to church on Sunday, God holds the man to blame.

  255. If the children are disrespectful and disobedient, the primary responsibility lies with the father, not his wife.

  256. In my view, says Dobson, America's greatest need is for husbands to begin guiding their families rather than pouring every physical and emotional resource into the mere acquisition of money.

  257. And then it's our responsibility to provide.

  258. It's our responsibility.

  259. We ought to be providing for our households.

  260. But it's not the only responsibility.

  261. In our provision, we must be good stewards with what we're given.

  262. Mature masculinity is sensitive to cultural expressions of masculinity.

  263. Mature masculinity is sensitive to cultural expressions of masculinity.

  264. This applies to all of us, married or not.

  265. In any relationship we take on with any woman.

  266. I have co-workers that are female.

  267. What is appropriate?

  268. What is the appropriate way for a man to act?

  269. Men, do you know which side of a female you're supposed to walk on down the road?

  270. Are you aware of where you're supposed to be when you're walking down the street?

  271. Which side of her do you walk on?

  272. It changes.

  273. Should you open the door?

  274. Yes, you should.

  275. Our culture may change.

  276. That may become an offensive thing someday.

  277. At which time you should stop.

  278. But are the things you do appropriately communicating to women, I'm a man and I would like to relate to you as a woman.

  279. So, my masculinity and your femininity are going to relate on a healthy level.

  280. How we dress matters.

  281. Dressing overly aggressive communicates something.

  282. I would suggest that none of you wear your tight clubbing shirts.

  283. Just not appropriate for that.

  284. I don't know if you have this.

  285. But it communicates an aggressive thing.

  286. On the flip side of that, you might not want to wear skinny jeans, guys.

  287. Because what does that communicate?

  288. Do you want to relate to women as a woman?

  289. You're saying, I want to dress like you.

  290. I want to relate like you.

  291. Swoopy bang hairdos?

  292. Probably not appropriate for a mature masculine male.

  293. Think about what you're trying to communicate.

  294. All of those things that we're seeing now, you know where that all comes from?

  295. The emo rock movement.

  296. You know where that comes from?

  297. Japan.

  298. You know what they're trying to do in Japan right now, young people?

  299. They're trying to de-gender society.

  300. There's an actual overt attempt to de-gender society.

  301. And that's where that is birthed out of.

  302. Think about those actions.

  303. What you do communicate to the women around you.

  304. I am a male.

  305. And therefore, we can interact that way.

  306. Or does it do the opposite?

  307. It's important.

  308. It matters.

  309. Mature masculinity is sensitive to cultural expressions of masculinity.

  310. All right.

  311. Secondly,

  312. mature masculine men provide.

  313. In Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  314. we see post-fall that Adam is going to work the ground.

  315. That wasn't something given to him as a result of sin.

  316. Right?

  317. He was told prior to the fall that he was going to work the garden.

  318. Wasn't he?

  319. That was his task to do,

  320. was to work the garden

  321. and to pick fruit from the trees

  322. and provide food.

  323. It was just going to be really easy then.

  324. He was never going to grow tired.

  325. He was going to live forever.

  326. He was just going to be a gardener

  327. and he was going to love it.

  328. After the fall,

  329. what we see in chapter 3

  330. is that it's going to become hard.

  331. It's going to become a toil.

  332. It's going to become so difficult to do.

  333. So that charge is still here for us as men.

  334. Now, I think that Piper's definition

  335. is really appropriate.

  336. He says that the man has a sense

  337. of his benevolent responsibility to provide.

  338. Because we can't always do that.

  339. Am I right?

  340. Some of us are not particularly gifted

  341. and therefore don't hold jobs

  342. that are very high paying.

  343. But we still should know

  344. that it's our responsibility.

  345. We should do everything we can

  346. to climb the ladder

  347. and make the money to provide for our families.

  348. I'm in a situation like that now.

  349. I don't quite make the ends meet.

  350. Fortunately, my wife is gifted

  351. and can do graphic art from home

  352. and be home with Cade.

  353. But the burden of providing lies with me.

  354. And I'm working on it.

  355. I'm finding ways to advance myself,

  356. my job,

  357. so that I can provide fully for my family.

  358. So there's a sense

  359. that that responsibility is yours.

  360. Not that you necessarily do.

  361. Or how about a man who's disabled,

  362. who can't?

  363. Just it's impossible

  364. for him to go to work.

  365. Not that he's required to,

  366. but that he should have

  367. this sense of the responsibility

  368. to do so.

  369. A mature masculine man

  370. also protects

  371. in the same way

  372. when he can,

  373. when he's able

  374. to do so.

  375. I think the

  376. unfortunate picture

  377. often of marriage

  378. is this 50-50 relationship.

  379. And that seems to apply

  380. to all things.

  381. So I'll get out of bed

  382. and check the strange noise

  383. 50% of the time.

  384. You get out the other 50%

  385. of the time.

  386. A mature masculine man

  387. gets up every time.

  388. Right?

  389. In Genesis chapter 34,

    Genesis 34 chapter mention

  390. a super cool story

  391. of Hamor,

  392. the Hivite,

  393. and he sees

  394. Dinah,

  395. the sister of Simeon

  396. and Levi,

  397. and he rapes her.

  398. And Simeon and Levi

  399. exact revenge

  400. by

  401. pretending

  402. that he's going to allow

  403. this tribe of men,

  404. these non-Jewish men,

  405. to marry

  406. with the

  407. Jewish women.

  408. But the

  409. thing they must do

  410. in order to do that

  411. is to all be circumcised.

  412. So they're all

  413. circumcised

  414. and

  415. they wait until

  416. they're incredibly sore

  417. and they go to the town

  418. and they kill

  419. all the men.

  420. They just wipe them all out.

  421. And

  422. that's the revenge

  423. that they exact

  424. for the serious crime

  425. of

  426. offending

  427. their sister.

  428. I'm not advocating

  429. that we go kill people.

  430. But

  431. we ought to have

  432. that sense of protection.

  433. Not just with our wives,

  434. but with

  435. women

  436. in general

  437. around us.

  438. Do we

  439. protect

  440. women?

  441. And we should.

  442. On this

  443. trip that we were just on,

  444. Wes and I were getting

  445. ready to fly out

  446. yesterday,

  447. actually.

  448. And we were sitting

  449. in the little

  450. lobby of the hotel

  451. getting breakfast.

  452. And I had already

  453. sat down

  454. because I had nothing

  455. gluten-free,

  456. so I was drinking

  457. orange juice.

  458. And all of a sudden

  459. I saw Wes just

  460. grab this old lady's arm.

  461. She's like

  462. over here

  463. and just grabbed her arm.

  464. It was the weirdest

  465. kind of out of the corner

  466. of my eye

  467. bizarre thing

  468. to see him do.

  469. And then I realized

  470. that what she was

  471. about to do

  472. was hit the hot water

  473. spout on the coffee thing

  474. with her cup

  475. under where the coffee

  476. comes out.

  477. So the spout's up here.

  478. She's going to hit the tab

  479. with the spout right here.

  480. It didn't make any sense

  481. at all.

  482. But she had her

  483. arm up under here

  484. and Wes saved her

  485. from scalding her arm

  486. with hot water.

  487. He didn't even think

  488. twice about it.

  489. He just smashed her arm

  490. out of the way.

  491. And she was so appreciative.

  492. Thank you so much.

  493. Thank you so much.

  494. I mean,

  495. he like manhandled her.

  496. But she was very thankful

  497. for what he had done.

  498. I don't like to toot

  499. my own horn.

  500. I don't have many examples

  501. of mature masculinity,

  502. so I'm going to give you

  503. this one.

  504. I shared the story

  505. with you guys

  506. of being in Gainesville

  507. a number of months ago

  508. and a woman was being

  509. kind of assaulted

  510. by a guy

  511. that she knew

  512. and she said,

  513. stop,

  514. you're hurting me.

  515. And I didn't even

  516. hesitate.

  517. I was talking with

  518. John Overton.

  519. We're walking down

  520. one side of the sidewalk

  521. and it was like

  522. something clicked in me

  523. and I beelined

  524. across the street

  525. to intervene

  526. in that situation.

  527. That's mature masculinity.

  528. We ought to have

  529. a sense about us

  530. to protect women.

  531. There you go.

  532. My examples.

  533. Let's wait.

  534. Me and Wes.

  535. Manly men.

  536. So ultimately,

  537. masculinity

  538. is living like Christ

  539. in relation to women.

  540. We're all called

  541. to be Christian.

  542. Masculinity is living

  543. like Christ

  544. in relation to women.

  545. Begin to filter

  546. everything you do

  547. through that.

  548. The things that you

  549. even do

  550. when you're not

  551. around women.

  552. Wes and I

  553. were on a backpacking

  554. trip together

  555. this trip.

  556. Thursday and Friday

  557. we were off in the woods.

  558. No women around.

  559. Me and Wes

  560. off in the woods.

  561. But we could have

  562. emasculated ourselves

  563. by talking

  564. coarsely

  565. about our lives.

  566. Right?

  567. But we didn't.

  568. When we spoke

  569. with our wives

  570. we spoke with them

  571. respectfully.

  572. Which is

  573. masculine.

  574. You see how that

  575. works?

  576. Begin to filter

  577. the things you do men

  578. through this lens

  579. of my masculinity

  580. hinges

  581. on how I relate

  582. to women.

  583. And if we're not

  584. masculine

  585. what are we?

  586. I'd say we're boys.

  587. some of us

  588. need to do some

  589. growing up.

  590. So if we're to be

  591. Christ

  592. in relation

  593. to women

  594. then

  595. we probably

  596. ought to look

  597. at Christ

  598. the ultimate

  599. expression

  600. of masculinity

  601. and in his life

  602. the culmination

  603. of his masculinity

  604. which was his death

  605. on the cross

  606. which is so

  607. offensive

  608. to the world's

  609. idea of masculinity.

  610. Right?

  611. We all

  612. as I talked

  613. before

  614. we all

  615. want to

  616. get back

  617. to this

  618. Adamic

  619. nature.

  620. We all

  621. want to

  622. be this

  623. planetary

  624. king

  625. and we

  626. seek that

  627. by trying

  628. to rule

  629. over other

  630. men

  631. which isn't

  632. at all

  633. what Christ

  634. who was God

  635. himself

  636. did.

  637. He humbled

  638. himself

  639. to death

  640. on a cross.

  641. Jay

  642. Wetger

  643. writes

  644. the cross

  645. is an offense

  646. because of

  647. its abject

  648. weakness.

  649. For in the

  650. spectacle of the

  651. cross we see

  652. a victim

  653. perishing

  654. in weakness

  655. shame

  656. ignominy

  657. and dereliction.

  658. It's an offense

  659. to what we

  660. think masculinity

  661. should look like.

  662. Right?

  663. Our Savior

  664. should have

  665. come on a

  666. big giant

  667. horse

  668. and he

  669. should have

  670. been the

  671. most muscly

  672. guy around

  673. and wielded

  674. large weapons

  675. and he

  676. should have

  677. obliterated

  678. the Roman

  679. guard

  680. and he

  681. should have

  682. rescued

  683. his church.

  684. But the

  685. picture we're

  686. given is

  687. quite the

  688. opposite of

  689. that.

  690. Silent

  691. like a

  692. lamb

  693. led to

  694. slaughter.

  695. Christ

  696. flips all

  697. that around

  698. for us

  699. doesn't it?

  700. Turn to

  701. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  702. chapter 1.

  703. I'm going to

  704. read to you

  705. verses 18

  706. through 15

  707. or 25

  708. of chapter 1.

  709. For the

  710. word of the

  711. cross is

  712. folly to

  713. those who

  714. are perishing

  715. but to us

  716. who are being

  717. saved it is

  718. the power

  719. of God.

  720. For it is

  721. written I

  722. will destroy

  723. the wisdom

  724. of the wise

  725. and the

  726. discernment

  727. of the

  728. discerning

  729. I will

  730. thwart.

  731. The

  732. philosophies

  733. of this

  734. world

  735. who seek

  736. to conquer

  737. to get

  738. back to

  739. that

  740. nature

  741. that

  742. endemic

  743. nature.

  744. I'm going

  745. to make

  746. that seem

  747. crazy.

  748. Verse 20

  749. Where is the

  750. one who is

  751. wise?

  752. Where is the

  753. scribe?

  754. Where is the

  755. debater of

  756. this age?

  757. Has not

  758. God made

  759. foolish the

  760. wisdom of

  761. the world?

  762. For since

  763. in the

  764. wisdom of

  765. God the

  766. world did

  767. not know

  768. God

  769. through

  770. wisdom

  771. it pleased

  772. God

  773. through the

  774. folly

  775. of what

  776. we preach

  777. to save

  778. those

  779. who believe.

  780. For Jews

  781. demand signs

  782. and Greeks

  783. seek wisdom

  784. but we

  785. preach Christ

  786. crucified

  787. a stumbling

  788. block to

  789. Jews and

  790. folly to

  791. Gentiles.

  792. But to

  793. those who

  794. are called

  795. both Jews

  796. and Greeks

  797. Christ the

  798. power of

  799. God and

  800. the wisdom

  801. of God.

  802. For the

  803. foolishness of

  804. God is

  805. wiser than

  806. men and

  807. the weakness

  808. of God

  809. is stronger

  810. than men.

  811. Isn't that

  812. awesome?

  813. That says to

  814. me that when

  815. I'm willing to

  816. humble myself

  817. to the point

  818. of death

  819. to give

  820. myself

  821. in my

  822. masculinity

  823. to serve

  824. the women

  825. in my life

  826. power of

  827. God.

  828. What a

  829. task,

  830. right?

  831. What an

  832. overwhelming

  833. task

  834. that's been

  835. given to

  836. us.

  837. Fortunately,

  838. we have

  839. Christ.

  840. He is our

  841. way back.

  842. We can

  843. rule.

  844. We can

  845. be that

  846. planetary

  847. king.

  848. It just

  849. looks

  850. differently

  851. than the

  852. world

  853. thinks.

  854. 2 Corinthians

  855. 5.16.

  856. Paul says,

  857. Therefore,

  858. if anyone

  859. is in

  860. Christ,

  861. he is a

  862. new

  863. creation.

  864. The old

  865. has passed

  866. away.

  867. Behold,

  868. the new

  869. has come.

  870. We've been

  871. restored.

  872. Our

  873. masculinity

  874. has been

  875. restored

  876. in Christ.

  877. We've not

  878. been given

  879. the ability

  880. to be

  881. appropriate,

  882. to be

  883. mature,

  884. masculine

  885. men.

  886. But it's

  887. hard.

  888. Ladies,

  889. it's a

  890. challenge.

  891. Guys,

  892. I know

  893. how hard

  894. it is.

  895. Jesus

  896. says in

  897. Matthew

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  898. chapter

  899. 11,

  900. Come to

  901. me,

  902. all who

  903. labor and

  904. are heavy

  905. laden,

  906. and I

  907. will give

  908. you rest.

  909. Take

  910. my yoke

  911. upon you

  912. and learn

  913. from me,

  914. for I am

  915. gentle and

  916. lowly in

  917. heart,

  918. and you

  919. will find

  920. rest for

  921. your souls.

  922. For my

  923. yoke is

  924. easy,

  925. and my

  926. burden

  927. is light.

  928. So how

  929. do we

  930. live as

  931. mature,

  932. masculine

  933. men?

  934. We abide

  935. in Christ.

  936. We tarry

  937. with Him.

  938. We look

  939. to Him

  940. for the

  941. power we

  942. need in

  943. order to

  944. do so.

  945. And

  946. humility is

  947. required to

  948. see that

  949. happen.

  950. In the

  951. book,

  952. We're

  953. covering

  954. biblical

  955. manhood

  956. and

  957. womanhood.

  958. Piper

  959. gives a

  960. challenge and

  961. shares his

  962. prayer for

  963. the men of

  964. Bethlehem

  965. Baptist

  966. Church.

  967. And I

  968. think that

  969. we should

  970. echo this

  971. here at

  972. Christ

  973. Family

  974. Church.

  975. And there's

  976. 15 points,

  977. and I want

  978. to read

  979. them carefully

  980. for you,

  981. and I want

  982. you to

  983. bear with

  984. me.

  985. And we're

  986. going to

  987. close with

  988. this.

  989. Number

  990. one,

  991. that all

  992. your life,

  993. in whatever

  994. calling,

  995. be devoted to

  996. the glory of

  997. God.

  998. Number

  999. two,

  1000. that the

  1001. promises of

  1002. Christ be

  1003. trusted so

  1004. fully that

  1005. peace and

  1006. joy and

  1007. strength fill

  1008. your soul to

  1009. overflowing.

  1010. number

  1011. three,

  1012. that this

  1013. fullness of

  1014. God overflow

  1015. in daily

  1016. acts of

  1017. love so

  1018. that people

  1019. might see

  1020. your good

  1021. deeds and

  1022. give glory to

  1023. your Father

  1024. in heaven.

  1025. Number

  1026. four,

  1027. that you be

  1028. men of the

  1029. book who

  1030. love and

  1031. study and

  1032. obey the

  1033. Bible in

  1034. every area

  1035. of its

  1036. teaching,

  1037. that meditation

  1038. on biblical

  1039. truth be the

  1040. source of

  1041. hope and

  1042. faith,

  1043. that you

  1044. continue to

  1045. grow in

  1046. understanding

  1047. through all the

  1048. chapters of

  1049. your life,

  1050. never thinking

  1051. that study and

  1052. growth are

  1053. only for

  1054. others.

  1055. Number

  1056. five,

  1057. that you

  1058. be men of

  1059. prayer so

  1060. that the

  1061. word of

  1062. God will

  1063. be open

  1064. to you,

  1065. so the

  1066. power of

  1067. faith and

  1068. holiness will

  1069. descend upon

  1070. you,

  1071. that your

  1072. spiritual

  1073. influence may

  1074. increase at

  1075. home and

  1076. at church

  1077. and in the

  1078. world.

  1079. Number

  1080. six,

  1081. that you

  1082. be men

  1083. who have a

  1084. deep grasp

  1085. of the

  1086. sovereign grace

  1087. of God,

  1088. which undergirds

  1089. all these

  1090. spiritual

  1091. processes,

  1092. that you

  1093. be deep

  1094. thinkers about

  1095. the doctrines

  1096. of grace

  1097. and even

  1098. deeper

  1099. lovers of

  1100. these

  1101. things.

  1102. Number

  1103. seven,

  1104. that you

  1105. be totally

  1106. committed to

  1107. ministry,

  1108. whatever your

  1109. specific calling,

  1110. that you

  1111. not fritter

  1112. away your

  1113. time on

  1114. excessive

  1115. sports and

  1116. recreation or

  1117. unimportant

  1118. hobbies or

  1119. aimless

  1120. diddling in

  1121. the garage,

  1122. but that you

  1123. redeem the

  1124. time for

  1125. Christ and

  1126. his kingdom.

  1127. Number

  1128. eight,

  1129. that if you

  1130. are single,

  1131. you exploit your

  1132. singleness to

  1133. the fullness in

  1134. devotion to

  1135. God and

  1136. not be

  1137. paralyzed by

  1138. the desire

  1139. to be

  1140. married.

  1141. Number

  1142. nine,

  1143. that if you

  1144. are married,

  1145. you love

  1146. your life the

  1147. way Christ

  1148. loved the

  1149. church and

  1150. gave himself

  1151. for her,

  1152. that you

  1153. be a

  1154. humble,

  1155. self-denying,

  1156. up-building,

  1157. happy spiritual

  1158. leader,

  1159. that you

  1160. consistently

  1161. grow in

  1162. grace and

  1163. knowledge so

  1164. as never to

  1165. quench the

  1166. aspirations of

  1167. your wife for

  1168. spiritual

  1169. advancement,

  1170. that you

  1171. cultivate

  1172. tenderness and

  1173. strength,

  1174. a pattern of

  1175. initiative and a

  1176. listening ear,

  1177. that you accept the

  1178. responsibility of

  1179. provision and

  1180. protection in the

  1181. family, however you

  1182. and your wife share

  1183. the labor.

  1184. Number

  1185. ten,

  1186. that if you have

  1187. children, you

  1188. accept primary

  1189. responsibility in

  1190. partnership with your

  1191. wife to raise up

  1192. children in the

  1193. discipline and

  1194. instruction of the

  1195. Lord, children who

  1196. hope in the triumph

  1197. of God that you

  1198. establish a pattern of

  1199. teaching and discipline

  1200. that is not solely

  1201. dependent on the

  1202. church or school to

  1203. impart Bible knowledge

  1204. and spiritual values to

  1205. the children, that you

  1206. give your children the

  1207. time and attention and

  1208. affection that

  1209. communicates the true

  1210. nature of our

  1211. father in heaven.

  1212. Number eleven, that

  1213. you not assume

  1214. advancement and pure

  1215. approval in your

  1216. gainful employment are

  1217. the highest values in

  1218. life, but that you

  1219. ponder the eternal

  1220. significance of faithful

  1221. fatherhood and time

  1222. spent with your wife,

  1223. that you repeatedly

  1224. consider the new

  1225. possibilities each age

  1226. of your life for

  1227. maximizing your

  1228. energies for the

  1229. glory of God in

  1230. ministry, that you

  1231. pose the question

  1232. often.

  1233. Is our family molded

1234. by the culture or do

  1235. we embody the values

  1236. of the kingdom of

  1237. God, that you lead

  1238. the family in making

  1239. choices not on the

  1240. basis of secular

  1241. trends or upward

  1242. lifestyle expectations,

1243. but on the basis of

  1244. what will strengthen the

1245. faith of the family and

  1246. advance the cause of

  1247. Christ.

  1248. Number twelve, that you

  1249. step back, plan the

  1250. various form of your

  1251. life's ministry in

  1252. chapters.

  1253. Chapters are divided by

  1254. various things, age,

  1255. strength, singleness,

  1256. marriage, employment,

  1257. children at home,

  1258. children in college,

  1259. grandchildren, retirement,

  1260. et cetera.

1261. No chapter has all the

  1262. joys.

1263. Finite life is a series

  1264. of trade-offs.

  1265. Finding God's will and

1266. living for the glory of

1267. Christ to the full in

  1268. every chapter is what

1269. makes it a success, not

  1270. whether it reads like

  1271. somebody else's chapter,

1272. whether it has in it

  1273. what only another

  1274. chapter will bring.

  1275. Number thirteen, that

  1276. you develop a wartime

  1277. mentality and lifestyle,

  1278. that you never forget

1279. that life is short, that

  1280. billions of people hang

1281. in the balance of heaven

1282. and hell every day, that

1283. the love of money is

  1284. spiritual suicide, that

  1285. the goals of upper

  1286. mobility, nicer clothes,

  1287. cars, houses,

  1288. vacations, food, hobbies

  1289. are a poor and a

  1290. dangerous substitute for

1291. the goals of living for

  1292. Christ with all your

  1293. might and maximizing

1294. your joy and ministry to

  1295. people's needs.

  1296. Number fourteen, that in

  1297. all your relationships with

  1298. women, not just in

  1299. marriage, you seek the

  1300. guidance of the Holy

  1301. Spirit in applying the

  1302. biblical vision of

  1303. manhood and womanhood,

  1304. that you develop a

  1305. lifestyle and demeanor

  1306. that expresses your God

  1307. given responsibility for

  1308. humble strength and

  1309. leadership and for

  1310. self-sacrificing

  1311. provision and protection,

  1312. that you think

  1313. creatively and with

  1314. cultural sensitivity,

  1315. sensitivity, just as she

1316. must do, and shaping the

  1317. style and setting, the

  1318. tone of your interactions

  1319. with women.

  1320. Number fifteen, that you

  1321. see the biblical guidelines

1322. for what is appropriate and

  1323. inappropriate for men and

1324. women, not as licensed for

  1325. domination or bossive

1326. passivity, but as a call to

  1327. servant leadership that

  1328. thinks in terms of

  1329. responsibilities, not

1330. rights, that you see these

  1331. principles as wise and

  1332. gracious prescriptions for

1333. how to discover the true

1334. freedom of God's ideal of

  1335. complementarity, that you

  1336. encourage the fruitful

  1337. encouragement of women in

  1338. the countless ministry

  1339. roles that are biblically

  1340. appropriate and deeply

  1341. needed.

  1342. Guys, I think it's time that

1343. we stop being boys and start

  1344. being mature, masculine men.

  1345. Let's pray together.
