  1. Father God, I pray that you find us humble this morning, coming to your word.

  2. Recognizing that you are a sovereign, all-powerful God, and that you spoke to us should be something special that we ought to pay very careful attention to.

  3. And I pray, Father, that this morning's text, the truths contained therein, will be planted deep in our hearts and will grow into vines that bear fruit.

  4. And I pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  5. So you may be asking yourself, I thought we were preaching through the book of Romans.

  6. We are. We are still doing that.

  7. Chapter three is where we are, the beginning of chapter three.

  8. And I'll start next week, I promise, on chapter three.

  9. But the beginning of chapter three in Romans wasn't really what was on my heart this week.

  10. And I went to the doctor on Wednesday and received yet another prognosis of my condition.

  11. Those of you who know me well know I deal with a number of health conditions.

  12. I'm a type one diabetic.

  13. I have hypothyroidism.

  14. I'm in constant pain.

  15. And we're not sure why just yet, although we may be getting to the bottom of it.

  16. But my my autoimmune system, for some reason, is is turning on my body, primarily my glands, the endocrine system.

  17. And one by one, things seem to be getting ticked off that list.

  18. My pancreas, my thyroid gland are all being attacked by my autoimmune system.

  19. And it sounds kind of cool to have like a like a cranked up autoimmune system.

  20. I wish that also meant that I didn't get sick at all.

  21. Unfortunately, it doesn't.

  22. I'm just a mess pretty much all the time.

  23. Very few moments of my day that I'm not in pain.

  24. I have excruciating headaches most of the time.

  25. Last night, I got very little sleep because my left leg just would not stop aching.

  26. I don't know why.

  27. No idea why.

  28. On Wednesday, I found out that I have osteoporosis.

  29. Isn't exciting.

  30. I'm 31 years old.

  31. I have osteoporosis in my hips.

  32. I may secretly actually be an old woman.

  33. I'm not sure yet.

  34. I'll let you know if I figure it out.

  35. But but so I'm osteoporotic in my hips.

  36. It's not in a terribly advanced state.

  37. So there could be some reversal of that.

  38. But we also discovered that I have a growth hormone deficiency, which may be what's causing the pain in my body.

  39. At my age, growth hormone is still important for healing and recovering.

  40. It still exists.

  41. But what it means is that my immune system is also attacking and killing my pituitary gland.

  42. So another gland, again, is being attacked.

  43. And so I'm sitting in the doctor's office and I'm I've gone from a bone density scan to an X-ray.

  44. And the lady that was going to administer the X-ray said, why are you doing this?

  45. And I said, I really don't know.

  46. I'm not sure why this is being done.

  47. And she said, you're way too young.

  48. Let me go check and see what's going on.

  49. And that caused the doctor, who's a good friend of mine, to actually come in and say, hey, we saw something in your lab results.

  50. We're just checking into it.

  51. But you do look like you have osteoporosis.

  52. So I'm sitting waiting to hear after the X-rays were done, waiting to hear what was going on.

  53. And I thought to myself, should something like this rob my joy?

  54. Should a new prognosis, another thing to deal with, should it rob my joy?

  55. And in my head, the resounding answer to that was, no, of course not.

  56. It shouldn't rob my joy.

  57. My joy is found in Christ.

  58. Of course not.

  59. But in my heart, I'm not sure I felt the same way.

  60. So sitting there with nothing but my phone, I began to run through scriptures in my head, things that would be an encouragement to me in this time.

  61. And my mind was taken to Matthew chapter five, where Jesus preaches what we know as the Sermon on the Mount.

  62. And he begins in verse three, running through verse 12, these verses that we call the Beatitudes.

  63. Beatitudes is Latin for happy or joyful or blissful.

  64. Each of these verses starts with blessed, which means the same thing, full of joy.

  65. And it's a joy that isn't affected by outside circumstance.

  66. So let's see what he says.

  67. What is it that makes these people joyful when speaking to Christians in light of all the things that he's talking about?

  68. We're just going to run through them quick and we're going to move beyond to the book of Philippians.

  69. But quickly, I want to show you in verse three, we have the poor in spirit or the person with no spiritual equity.

  70. The person who realizes how broken they are in this world and have no spiritual value whatsoever.

  71. What is the encouragement to them?

  72. What is it that makes them joyful and is at the center of their joy that they own the kingdom of heaven?

  73. The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

  74. Verse four, those who mourn or are broken over their sin.

  75. They have a promise that they'll be comforted one day.

  76. Verse five, those who are meek, who have the power to act, but it's tempered by love to receive persecution and trouble in this world.

  77. They're given a promise that they'll reign one day over the earth.

  78. Verse six, those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, who desire godliness and their lives someday that we set free from the captivity of sin.

  79. Their fleshly bodies will cease to exist, will be liberated from the temptation of sin altogether.

  80. Verse seven, the merciful, those who are willing to forgive the wrongs do them.

  81. Shall be forgiven.

  82. Verse eight.

  83. The pure in heart, those with undivided hearts toward God will get to see him.

  84. We'll get to experience him here.

  85. We can't, but they will one day.

  86. The peacemakers in verse nine, those who share the gospel, those who are about the business of making peace between God and man.

  87. They'll be a part of God's family.

  88. They will be called sons of God.

  89. Verse 10.

  90. Those who are persecuted, who suffer for righteousness sake.

  91. Again, theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  92. And then in verse 11 and 12, when they are reviled and persecuted, when they are mocked, made fun of, seen as strangers and aliens in this world.

  93. Their reward is great.

  94. And here's where they find their happiness.

  95. John Newton, who was an 18th century Anglican minister, famous for writing the song Amazing Grace, said this.

  96. Suppose a man was going to New York to take possession of a large estate and his carriage should break down one mile before he got to the city, which obligated him to walk the rest of the way to the inheritance.

  97. What a fool we should think him if we saw him wringing his hands and blubbering all the way the remaining while.

  98. My carriage is broken.

  99. My carriage is broken.

  100. What man who has to walk a mile to receive a great inheritance laments the thing that's broken behind him?

  101. And so my question for myself this week and my question for you this morning is, do we lament our broken carriage?

  102. My potty is a broken carriage.

  103. Or do we look to the reward and what's beyond?

  104. Turn to the book of Philippians with me, please.

  105. Paul's letter to the church of Philippi was written from a Roman prison.

  106. It's not something I've experienced.

  107. Certainly, Paul is being persecuted for his faith.

  108. And I want to show you quickly that joy is crucially thematic in Paul's letter to the Philippians as he works to encourage them to continue in and contend for their faith.

  109. So look with me quickly.

  110. I just want to show you the theme, the language that exists throughout.

  111. Chapter 1, verse 18.

  112. Two times.

  113. What do we see?

  114. The word rejoice.

  115. Christ is proclaimed in that I rejoice.

  116. Yes, and I will rejoice.

  117. Chapter 1, verse 25.

  118. He speaks of joy in the faith.

  119. Chapter 2, verse 2.

  120. He talks about his joy.

  121. Chapter 2, verse 28.

  122. Twice, I believe again.

  123. No, once in 28, once in 29.

  124. In 28, that you may rejoice.

  125. And in 29, with all joy.

  126. 3-1.

  127. Finally, my brothers rejoice in the Lord.

  128. 4-1.

  129. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and my crown.

  130. 4-4.

  131. It appears twice.

  132. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  133. Again, I will say, rejoice.

  134. And in 4-10, he says, I rejoiced in the Lord greatly.

  135. I would encourage you as you see words repeat throughout a book that you underline them and see what the writer is trying to say through that.

  136. So this joy is a crucial thematic element in showing them that in order for them to contend for and continue in their faith, joy is a necessary motivation for that.

  137. So joy in Christ fuels Christ-likeness.

  138. Joy in Christ fuels Christ-likeness.

  139. I'm going to show you three ways that it does so.

  140. But first, let's look at Philippians 1-21.

  141. I think that this is the thesis statement of his letter.

  142. Verse 121.

  143. He says, for to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  144. What does he mean by that?

  145. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  146. For me, to live here on this earth, to be here in the body, in my flesh, is to experience and know and savor Christ Jesus.

  147. To die is better yet because I get to go be with him.

  148. That's what Paul's communicating to us.

  149. Because of the surpassing knowledge of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord, I'll remain on.

  150. I love living because I live for Christ.

  151. You can feel his joy in that statement.

  152. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  153. C.S. Lewis wrote in The Weight of Glory,

  154. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered to us.

  155. Like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.

  156. We are far too easily pleased.

  157. As Christians, as we live in our flesh, we are far too easily pleased.

  158. We trade lesser things for the greater thing that is Christ Jesus, our Lord.

  159. So joy in Christ fuels Christ-likeness in three ways.

  160. Number one, by empowering the Christian to resist sin.

  161. Fuels Christ-like living by empowering the Christian to resist sin.

  162. Look at chapter 2.

  163. We're going to read verses 1 through 15 together.

  164. Verse 1.

  165. So, if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,

  166. complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

  167. Now, you see him saying in verse 2, complete my joy.

  168. Further up in verse 25, he's talked about staying on for the Philippians for their progress and joy in the faith.

  169. So, here's where we've been and where we're moving now.

  170. So, if there's any encouragement in Christ, any love, any joy in him,

  171. verse 3,

  172. do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

  173. Let each of you look not only to his own interest, but also to the interest of others.

  174. Have this mind among yourself, which is yours, in Christ Jesus,

  175. who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

  176. but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

  177. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,

  178. even death on a cross.

  179. Therefore, God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,

  180. so that the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven or earth and under the earth,

  181. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  182. Amen.

  183. Verse 12.

  184. Therefore, so in light of all of this,

  185. your joy in Christ and what he's accomplished on your behalf,

  186. therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed,

  187. so now, not only as in my presence, but much more in my absence,

  188. work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

  189. For it is God who works in you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

  190. Do all things without grumbling or questioning,

  191. that you may be blameless and innocent children of God

  192. without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation,

  193. among whom you shine as light in the world.

  194. And what fuels all that?

  195. What do we go back to in all that?

  196. It's our joy in Christ.

  197. It's that we treasure him above all else.

  198. He makes everything dim as a result of his great brightness in our life.

  199. Matthew Henry, who was a Presbyterian minister in the 17th and 18th centuries

  200. and wrote a commentary on the entire Bible, which is quite useful,

  201. once said,

  202. The joy of the Lord will arm us against the assaults of our spiritual enemies

  203. and put our mouths out of taste for those pleasures

  204. with which the tempter baits his hooks.

  205. We'll put our mouths out of pleasure

  206. for those tastes with which the tempter baits his hooks.

  207. If you love Christ, you won't love this world.

  208. If you love him in the measure you should,

  209. in light of the gospel of grace,

  210. you won't love the things of this world

  211. and they'll become tasteless to you.

  212. It'll be easy to resist sin

  213. because of your great pursuit of Christ.

  214. Number two.

  215. Empowers us to live Christ-like lives

  216. by enabling the Christian to bear up under suffering.

  217. Philippians chapter 4

    Philippians 4:11

  218. verses 11 and 12

  219. through 13.

  220. I have learned in whatever situation I am

  221. to be content.

  222. I know how to be brought low

  223. and I know how to abound

  224. in any and every circumstance.

  225. I have learned the secret of facing plenty

  226. and hunger,

  227. abundance and need.

  228. I can do all things through him

  229. who strengthens me.

  230. I can do all things through him

  231. who strengthens me.

  232. And he gives us a clue what he's talking about

  233. earlier in the chapter,

  234. verse 4.

  235. He says,

  236. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  237. Again,

  238. I will say rejoice.

  239. Let your reasonableness

  240. be known to everyone.

  241. The Lord is at hand.

  242. Do not be anxious about anything,

  243. but in everything,

  244. by prayer and supplication,

  245. with thanksgiving,

  246. let your requests be made known to God.

  247. And the peace of God,

  248. which surpasses all understanding,

  249. will guard your hearts

  250. and your minds

  251. in Christ Jesus.

  252. So what is his key

  253. to learning

  254. in whatever situation

  255. to be content?

  256. It's the joy he finds in Christ.

  257. It's casting his anxieties

  258. and his worries

  259. at the feet of Christ

  260. and living a rejoiceful life

  261. as a result of him.

  262. Jeremiah Burroughs,

  263. I keep telling you who these people are

  264. because I just want you to see

  265. that I'm not the only one

  266. saying such things.

  267. Jeremiah Burroughs

  268. was a Puritan pastor,

  269. wrote a great little book,

  270. cool read,

  271. called The Rare Jewel

  272. of Christian Contentment.

  273. I would commend it to you.

  274. He said this.

  275. Many men think

  276. that when they are troubled

  277. and have not got contentment,

  278. it is because they have

  279. but a little in the world

  280. and that if they had more,

  281. then they should be content.

  282. That is just as if a man

  283. were hungry

  284. and to satisfy

  285. his craving stomach,

  286. he should gape

  287. and hold open his mouth

  288. to take in the wind

  289. and then should think

  290. that the reason why

  291. he is not satisfied

  292. is because he has not

  293. got enough

  294. of the wind.

  295. So a man is hungry

  296. and to feed himself,

  297. he gapes open his mouth

  298. and takes in the wind

  299. and then says,

  300. man,

  301. I'm still not full.

  302. I need more wind.

  303. No.

  304. The reason is because

  305. the thing is not suitable

  306. to a craving stomach.

  307. Yet there is really

  308. the same madness

  309. in the world

  310. and in the church.

  311. The wind

  312. which a man

  313. takes in by gaping

  314. will as soon satisfy

  315. a craving stomach

  316. ready to starve

  317. as all the comforts

  318. in the world

  319. can satisfy a soul

  320. who knows

  321. what true happiness

  322. means.

  323. As Christians,

  324. we've experienced

  325. the joy of Christ.

  326. If you haven't,

  327. you should doubt

  328. your salvation.

  329. We know

  330. what satisfies.

  331. Why do we run around

  332. looking for things

  333. that don't?

  334. Why do we look

  335. to our circumstances,

  336. our health,

  337. our loved ones

  338. for that which

  339. cannot satisfy?

  340. Only Christ

  341. can satisfy

  342. a soul

  343. that's alive

  344. to him.

  345. A great example

  346. of that is found

  347. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 11:24–26

  348. chapter 11

  349. verse 24

  350. through 26.

  351. It's a little commentary

  352. on Moses

  353. by the writer

  354. of Hebrews.

  355. He writes,

  356. by faith,

  357. Moses,

  358. when he was grown up,

  359. refused to be called

  360. the son of Pharaoh's

  361. daughter,

  362. choosing rather

  363. to be mistreated

  364. with the people of God

  365. than to enjoy

  366. the fleeting pleasures

  367. of sin.

  368. He considered

  369. the reproach

  370. of Christ

  371. greater wealth

  372. than the treasures

  373. of Egypt,

  374. for he was looking

  375. to the reward.

  376. Christ Jesus himself

  377. is the treasure

  378. at the end.

  379. He is

  380. the reward.

  381. And Moses,

  382. the commentator,

  383. says,

  384. knew this.

  385. The reproach

  386. of Christ

  387. was greater

  388. than the treasures

  389. of Egypt.

  390. That's why

  391. he was able

  392. to be mistreated

  393. with the people

  394. of Israel.

  395. It's phenomenal.

  396. Number three,

  397. by encouraging

  398. the Christian

  399. to live radically.

  400. joy encourages

  401. the Christian

  402. to live radically

  403. in two ways.

  404. In service

  405. and in evangelism.

  406. In service.

  407. Philippians 3.8.

  408. Paul says,

  409. after he's given

  410. this pedigree

  411. of who he is

  412. as a religious

  413. person,

  414. and he's counted

  415. that as loss,

  416. in verse 8 he says,

  417. Indeed,

  418. I count everything

  419. as loss

  420. because of the

  421. surpassing worth

  422. of knowing

  423. Christ Jesus my Lord.

  424. For his sake,

  425. I have suffered

  426. the loss

  427. of all things

  428. and count them

  429. as rubbish

  430. in order that I

  431. may gain Christ.

  432. Jesus put it this way

  433. in Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  434. Sell your possessions

  435. and give to the needy.

  436. Provide yourselves

  437. with money bags

  438. that do not grow old,

  439. with a treasure in heaven

  440. that does not fail,

  441. where no thief approaches

  442. and no moth destroys.

  443. For where your treasure is,

  444. there your heart

  445. will be also.

  446. Jesus puts it

  447. plainly to us.

  448. Don't work

  449. for the approval

  450. of men here

  451. to gain for yourself

  452. in the now

  453. because eternity

  454. is so much more important.

  455. Store it for yourself.

  456. Treasures

  457. there.

  458. What will that treasure

  459. look like for us?

  460. Will my mansion

  461. be bigger than someone else's

  462. because I'm a preacher

  463. of the word?

  464. Not at all.

  465. Not at all.

  466. Faithful Christian living

  467. gives to us

  468. the ability

  469. to praise

  470. our Savior.

  471. Christ himself

  472. is the treasure.

  473. And those things

  474. that we have done

  475. in this life

  476. will be judged

  477. and will then be given

  478. as Clay says,

  479. ticker tape.

  480. As I say,

  481. confetti.

  482. We'll be given something

  483. to cast at the feet

  484. of Christ

  485. to praise him

  486. for the great work

  487. that he accomplished

  488. in and through us

  489. in this world.

  490. That's what heaven's

  491. going to be all about,

  492. everybody.

  493. It's going to be

  494. loving Christ.

  495. We should be about it

  496. now.

  497. If we have the mind

  498. of Christ,

  499. Jeremiah 9, 24

  500. says this,

  501. I am the Lord

  502. who practices

  503. steadfast love,

  504. justice,

  505. and righteousness

  506. in the earth.

  507. For in these things

  508. I delight,

  509. declares the Lord.

  510. Christ himself

  511. is happy.

  512. He is joyful

  513. in these acts

  514. of mercy.

  515. He finds joy

  516. in loving

  517. his creation.

  518. And if we're to have

  519. the mind of Christ

  520. and be on board

  521. with his mission,

  522. we should be about

  523. the same.

  524. It also encourages us

  525. to deliver radically

  526. in evangelism.

  527. So here we see

  528. Paul

  529. in a Roman prison

  530. able to receive

  531. visitors,

  532. sharing his faith

  533. with everyone

  534. he has opportunity.

  535. I'm sure the Roman

  536. guards either became

  537. Christians

  538. or were very annoyed.

  539. Philippians 1, 18

  540. Paul says,

  541. what then?

  542. Only that in every way.

  543. He's talking about

  544. some men sharing

  545. the gospel

  546. for their own gain.

  547. Some doing it

  548. out of pure motive.

  549. Some doing it

  550. for their own gain.

  551. He says,

  552. only that in every way,

  553. whether in pretense

  554. or in truth,

  555. Christ is proclaimed.

  556. And in that

  557. I rejoice.

  558. Paul was joyful.

  559. He was happy

  560. in the good news

  561. of Jesus Christ

  562. being shared.

  563. if Christ

  564. is our treasure,

  565. the thing we value

  566. more than anything else

  567. in this world,

  568. we'll talk about him.

  569. Am I right?

  570. No amount

  571. of teasing

  572. or persecution,

  573. awkwardness

  574. will prevent us

  575. from doing so.

  576. If we're not

  577. actively involved

  578. in sharing our faith

  579. on a constant basis,

  580. it is a

  581. indictment

  582. on what we value.

  583. If you don't

  584. constantly talk

  585. about your Savior,

  586. you don't love him

  587. like you ought.

  588. J. Campbell White,

  589. who was leader

  590. of the layman's

  591. missionary movement,

  592. which was started

  593. at the first part

  594. of the 20th century,

  595. said,

  596. most men

  597. are not satisfied

  598. with the permanent

  599. output of their lives.

  600. Nothing can wholly

  601. satisfy the life

  602. of Christ

  603. within his followers

  604. except the adoption

  605. of Christ's purpose

  606. toward the world

  607. he came to redeem.

  608. Fame,

  609. pleasure,

  610. and riches

  611. are but husks

  612. and ashes

  613. in contrast

  614. with the boundless

  615. and abiding joy

  616. of working with God

  617. for the fulfillment

  618. of his eternal plans.

  619. The men

  620. who are putting

  621. everything

  622. into Christ's undertaking

  623. are getting out of life

  624. its sweetest

  625. and most priceless

  626. rewards.

  627. Joy, then,

  628. or joy found

  629. in Christ

  630. empowers

  631. enables

  632. and encourages

  633. us

  634. to be worthy

  635. of that name

  636. Christian,

  637. to be

  638. Christ-like.

  639. Isn't it freeing

  640. to know

  641. that our motivation

  642. doesn't have to be

  643. abject stoicism,

  644. that our motivation

  645. gets to be joy.

  646. We get to seek

  647. our greatest

  648. happiness.

  649. happiness.

  650. We are promised

  651. by Christ's

  652. persecution

  653. in this world.

  654. We are promised

  655. that it will be

  656. difficult.

  657. Christians

  658. ought to be

  659. the most

  660. troubled

  661. by the world's

  662. terms,

  663. but the most

  664. joyful

  665. in the kingdom

  666. of God.

  667. That's what

  668. makes us

  669. strange.

  670. That's what

  671. makes people

  672. look at Christians

  673. and say,

  674. I don't get it.

  675. I do not

  676. understand.

  677. What is this

  678. hope that

  679. they have?

  680. Peter instructs

  681. us to be

  682. prepared to

  683. give an

  684. answer to

  685. that,

  686. right?

  687. If people

  688. don't ask

  689. you what

  690. is the

  691. hope you

  692. have,

  693. why is it

  694. that you

  695. can bear

  696. up under

  697. such things?

  698. Chances are

  699. you're not

  700. bearing up

  701. under such

  702. things.

  703. Blaise Pascal

  704. was a 17th

  705. century French

  706. mathematician.

  707. Wes shared

  708. this with me

  709. I think a

  710. couple of

  711. weeks ago.

  712. I had this

  713. on my phone

  714. so it was

  715. an encouragement

  716. to me in the

  717. doctor's office.

  718. They found

  719. eight years

  720. after his

  721. death,

  722. sewn in,

  723. pinned into

  724. the inside

  725. of his

  726. jacket that

  727. he wore,

  728. the account

  729. of his

  730. conversion.

  731. I want to

  732. read it to

  733. you.

  734. I hope it

  735. kind of

  736. reignites

  737. a passion

  738. for Christ

  739. in your

  740. heart.

  741. He wrote,

  742. Year of

  743. Grace,

  746. 23 November,

  747. Feast of

  750. From about

  751. half past

  783. Jesus Christ,

  784. Jesus Christ,

  785. may I never

  786. be separated

  787. from him.

  788. Let's pray.
