  1. There isn't a topic under more question and attack than that of salvation.

  2. See, all the enemy has to do is not confront it head on.

  3. ! That would be ridiculous.

  4. That would be...

  5. It just wouldn't work for him.

  6. Just put it that way.

  7. Just wouldn't work.

  8. But what he does do is he attacks the details.

  9. He attacks the little things.

  10. The things that maybe from our vantage point,

  11. from our viewpoint, isn't that big of a deal.

  12. For example,

  13. liberal evangelicals pleading with conservatives

  14. to drop the harshness and vulgarity of the cross.

  15. The blood.

  16. Get rid of the blood.

  17. Because it's hard to hear.

  18. People don't want to listen to that.

  19. It's harsh.

  20. The problem is if you get rid of the blood,

  21. you get rid of the atonement.

  22. If you get rid of the atonement,

  23. you get rid of Christ's death,

  24. meaning anything.

  25. Then you get rid of salvation altogether.

  26. It's a horrible, slippery slope.

  27. Or the enemy will get us fighting ourselves

  28. instead of the enemy himself.

  29. Like maybe a theological debate

  30. over Calvinism versus Arminianism.

  31. Where we become more for what we're against

  32. than what we're for.

  33. Or he can use the seeker-sensitive modernists

  34. who have turned salvation

  35. into a walk down the aisle.

  36. Some of you have come from a church like that.

  37. Where the line is so vague

  38. and so skewed together

  39. that you can't tell

  40. if they're talking about walking down the aisle

  41. or saying a prayer

  42. or knowing Jesus himself

  43. or being reborn.

  44. Regenerate.

  45. Nathan last week,

  46. or two weeks ago,

  47. I'm sorry,

  48. used a great illustration

  49. to open up his sermon.

  50. He talked about the crux

  51. of mountain climbing.

  52. The hardest part of mountain climbing.

  53. The hardest move.

  54. The hardest problem

  55. that he faces

  56. or you face

  57. in a climb.

  58. Everything works up to it

  59. and then once you get it,

  60. the rest is cakewalk.

  61. The rest is celebrating

  62. what you've accomplished.

  63. And this morning,

  64. we're still on the crux

  65. of the book of Romans

  66. and of all Christianity.

  67. We are still there

  68. with the biggest problem

  69. that we have to get right.

  70. Christianity differentiates itself

  71. from any other religion

  72. by this doctrine of salvation.

  73. any religion,

  74. pagan or Catholic,

  75. Muslim or Jehovah's Witness,

  76. Mormon,

  77. cult,

  78. Hindu,

  79. Buddhist,

  80. all other religions

  81. have a works-based salvation.

  82. I will do this

  83. and I will achieve glory.

  84. I will achieve a salvation.

  85. Christianity sits firmly,

  86. or at least it's supposed

  87. to sit firmly,

  88. on the doctrine of salvation

  89. by faith alone,

  90. by grace alone,

  91. without works.

  92. See,

  93. the enemy has

  94. even brought that

  95. into question.

  96. Now,

  97. it's one thing to say it.

  98. It's one thing to say,

  99. I believe in the justification

  100. by faith alone,

  101. by grace alone.

  102. It's,

  103. you may know it in your head,

  104. but I think sometimes

  105. there's a disconnect

  106. between the head

  107. and the feet.

  108. You may know it,

  109. but you don't do anything about it.

  110. You may know it,

  111. but you don't know the details.

  112. You don't know the ins and outs.

  113. Whatever the case may be.

  114. So this morning,

  115. I want to help.

  116. I want to help the college student,

  117. the teacher,

  118. the nurse,

  119. the firefighter,

  120. the lawyer.

  121. I want to help this morning

  122. so we're all rooted

  123. and grounded

  124. in the truth of God's Word.

  125. So that we can all ask

  126. the question that Paul does

  127. in verse 3 of chapter 4,

  128. what does the Scripture say?

  129. And we can answer it.

  130. That's what I want to happen

  131. this morning

  132. over this topic.

  133. So we must let the Scripture

  134. be our foundation.

  135. Let it be our authority.

  136. So let us learn

  137. what Scripture says.

  138. Romans chapter 4,

    Romans 4:1–8

  139. verses 1 through 8.

  140. God's Word says,

  141. What then shall we say

  142. was gained by Abraham,

  143. our forefather,

  144. according to the flesh?

  145. For if Abraham

  146. was justified by works,

  147. he has something

  148. to boast about,

  149. but not before God.

  150. For what does the Scripture say?

  151. Abraham believed God

  152. and it was counted to him

  153. as righteousness.

  154. Now to the one who works,

  155. his wages are not counted

  156. as a gift,

  157. but as his due.

  158. And to the one

  159. who does not work,

  160. but believes in him

  161. who justifies the ungodly,

  162. his faith is counted

  163. as righteousness.

  164. Just as David

  165. also speaks of the blessing

  166. of the one to whom

  167. God counts righteousness

  168. apart from works,

  169. blessed are those

  170. whose lawless deeds

  171. are forgiven

  172. and whose sins

  173. are covered.

  174. Blessed is the man

  175. against whom the Lord

  176. will not count

  177. his sin.

  178. I ask you to pray

  179. with me now.

  180. Great God,

  181. Almighty God,

  182. our Father,

  183. this is your Word.

  184. we pray God

  185. that your Word

  186. speaks this morning.

  187. I pray God

  188. that you use me,

  189. that you hide me

  190. behind your cross

  191. and the work on the cross

  192. by your Son Jesus,

  193. that His name

  194. will be proclaimed,

  195. that He will receive

  196. all the glory.

  197. Spirit,

  198. I ask that you would move

  199. in our hearts,

  200. that we would be able

  201. to respond

  202. to what we hear

  203. this morning

  204. by and from you.

  205. we trust

  206. in what you're going

  207. to do this morning.

  208. We are excited

  209. about what you're going

  210. to do

  211. and the lives

  212. that you're going

  213. to change.

  214. In Jesus' name

  215. I pray.

  216. Amen.

  217. I have three points

  218. this morning

  219. and they're straight

  220. from the text.

  221. They're nothing,

  222. no fancy alliteration

  223. or anything like that.

  224. In fact,

  225. John MacArthur

  226. uses these too

  227. and there's nothing

  228. special about them.

  229. the first point

  230. is Abraham

  231. was not justified

  232. by works.

  233. Abraham was not

  234. justified by works.

  235. Verses 1 and 2.

  236. What then shall we say

  237. was gained by Abraham

  238. our forefather

  239. according to the flesh?

  240. For if Abraham

  241. was justified by works,

  242. he has something

  243. to boast about,

  244. but not before God.

  245. Paul,

  246. like he does

  247. in other writings,

  248. uses logic.

  249. He's using logic

  250. here for his argument.

  251. What shall we say

  252. was gained by Abraham?

  253. The faithful,

  254. obedient patriarch

  255. of the Jewish people.

  256. If Abraham

  257. was justified

  258. by works,

  259. he would have

  260. something to boast about.

  261. Clear logic,

  262. nothing fancy,

  263. nothing hidden there.

  264. True words.

  265. We would,

  266. if we would be

  267. justified by works,

  268. we would fall

  269. right there with him.

  270. Meaning,

  271. if we obey God

  272. perfectly,

  273. if we were good

  274. and loving

  275. to all people,

  276. if we did all

  277. the religious activities,

  278. attended all the church

  279. things going on,

  280. if we spoke

  281. Christianese,

  282. if we said the right

  283. things,

  284. if we get baptized,

  285. if we act good

  286. in front of certain people,

  287. maybe the pastor

  288. or other people,

  289. if we followed

  290. every rule

  291. and every law,

  292. every written,

  293. we then would have

  294. something to boast about.

  295. if, of course,

  296. our salvation

  297. resulted in

  298. those activities.

  299. It would be

  300. centered on us.

  301. We would have

  302. received the praise

  303. for what we accomplished

  304. and what we did.

  305. We accomplished

  306. something great

  307. by getting to heaven.

  308. The problem is

  309. we can't.

  310. It is impossible.

  311. This is the point

  312. that Paul

  313. is making here

  314. in this letter

  315. to the Romans.

  316. See, without God,

  317. we have no hope.

  318. See, Abraham

  319. was called

  320. by God.

  321. Abraham was called

  322. and didn't know

  323. where he was going.

  324. He just went.

  325. God didn't say

  326. to Abraham,

  327. Abraham,

  328. why don't you

  329. go to Birmingham?

  330. Jump on I-20,

  331. head west,

  332. you'll be there

  333. in two hours.

  334. It wasn't that way.

  335. God said,

  336. go,

  337. and I'll show you

  338. where you're going to go.

  339. Abraham needed God

  340. to lead him.

  341. Likewise,

  342. for us,

  343. we need God

  344. to lead us.

  345. Now,

  346. we've all used maps.

  347. We've all used

  348. Google Maps

  349. or MapQuest

  350. or whatever.

  351. Now,

  352. mind-blowing statement here.

  353. A map is only helpful

  354. if it's accurate,

  355. right?

  356. It's only helpful

  357. if it tells you

  358. where you are

  359. and where you're

  360. trying to go.

  361. Otherwise,

  362. it's useless.

  363. For our map

  364. this morning

  365. and our map

  366. as a Christian

  367. is the Word of God

  368. and is Christ Jesus Himself.

  369. See,

  370. other religions

  371. are maps

  372. that are inaccurate.

  373. Other religions

  374. are maps

  375. that take you nowhere.

  376. But this morning,

  377. we have a map.

  378. We have the Word of God

  379. sitting in your lap,

  380. on your phone,

  381. on your iPad,

  382. whatever it is.

  383. Sitting on your shelf.

  384. And we're able

  385. to follow God

  386. and know

  387. where we're going.

  388. So see,

  389. it's God's action

  390. on our life.

  391. See,

  392. so if

  393. we have something

  394. to boast about,

  395. if we

  396. receive salvation

  397. by our works,

  398. justification

  399. by works,

  400. if that was possible,

  401. the end of verse 2,

  402. Paul clearly says

  403. it's not going to happen.

  404. Abraham cannot boast

  405. before God.

  406. Can't do it.

  407. It's not possible.

  408. Which means,

  409. stop playing the game.

  410. Stop pretending

  411. you're somebody

  412. that you're not.

  413. Stop being in bondage

  414. to a set of rules

  415. and laws

  416. that you cannot keep.

  417. You are enslaved

  418. to those laws

  419. and to your hard work

  420. to do right.

  421. Stop.

  422. I've used this

  423. illustration before

  424. and I'm going to use it again

  425. because it works so well

  426. for this application.

  427. You guys know

  428. in mythology,

  429. in Greek and Roman mythology,

  430. the king named Sisyphus,

  431. great name,

  432. Sisyphus,

  433. his eternal punishment

  434. was to push

  435. a giant boulder

  436. up a hill.

  437. When the boulder

  438. got almost to the top,

  439. the boulder would roll

  440. all the way back down

  441. and he would have to repeat

  442. over and over

  443. and over

  444. throughout eternity.

  445. This is what you

  446. and me,

  447. you and I,

  448. proper grammar,

  449. do

  450. when we try

  451. to achieve salvation

  452. by works.

  453. When we try

  454. to do things,

  455. when we pretend

  456. to be something

  457. we're not.

  458. When we,

  459. I've given you

  460. the list of works.

  461. When we do

  462. those things

  463. and we try

  464. to do those things,

  465. we are pushing

  466. a rock up a hill

  467. for it just to

  468. roll back down

  469. and not get anywhere.

  470. It is all pointless

  471. and it leads to death.

  472. Don't be fooled.

  473. Don't be fooled

  474. into believing

  475. that you just need

  476. to be good.

  477. Don't be fooled

  478. into believing

  479. that you just have

  480. to do a certain thing

  481. or pray a certain prayer.

  482. You need God

  483. to call you.

  484. You need God.

  485. Do not be fooled.

  486. If you are trying

  487. to be someone you're not,

  488. if you're trying

  489. to be moral

  490. and be good,

  491. if you're trying

  492. to gain your salvation

  493. through works,

  494. you are condemned.

  495. But there's good news.

  496. Romans 8.1

  497. There is therefore

  498. now no condemnation

  499. for those who are

  500. in Christ Jesus.

  501. Which means

  502. because of what

  503. we were enslaved to,

  504. what we were condemned

  505. by,

  506. what we tried to achieve,

  507. we were sentenced

  508. to death for,

  509. has been removed

  510. and can be removed

  511. by Christ

  512. and His life,

  513. death,

  514. and resurrection.

  515. Then,

  516. there is no condemnation.

  517. There is life,

  518. life eternal

  519. with Jesus Christ

  520. because of His work

  521. on the cross

  522. and His death

  523. and resurrection.

  524. Now,

  525. I would have to imagine

  526. that no one

  527. would come out

  528. and say that they

  529. were trying to

  530. ascend to heaven

  531. by works.

  532. I'm pretty sure

  533. that nobody would say that.

  534. But you would say

  535. something like,

  536. I'm just trying

  537. to be a good person.

  538. Or people around you

  539. would say,

  540. I'm just trying

  541. to be good.

  542. I'm just trying

  543. to love those people

  544. around me.

  545. I'm just trying

  546. to live a good,

  547. balanced life.

  548. But see,

  549. we do

  550. when we try

  551. to gain salvation

  552. by works.

  553. I'm going to answer,

  554. I'm going to ask you

  555. a question.

  556. One,

  557. if you're 100% honest,

  558. are you humble

  559. towards God?

  560. Another way to ask,

  561. are you repentant?

  562. Are you repentant

  563. for the things

  564. that you have done?

  565. Is God,

  566. is Jesus Christ

  567. your Lord?

  568. Or is He just

  569. your parole officer

  570. where you check in

  571. and tell Him

  572. how many good things

  573. you've done for Him?

  574. Because I'm afraid

  575. that that's a lot

  576. of what we,

  577. we won't say it,

  578. but that's the picture

  579. we have.

  580. Is Jesus,

  581. think of all these

  582. things I've done

  583. for you.

  584. Look at God,

  585. look at how good I am

  586. and the prayers I've prayed

  587. and the people I've loved.

  588. Jesus says,

  589. whoever follows me

  590. must deny himself,

  591. must die to himself

  592. and take up his cross.

  593. Luke 9.

  594. Notice which is first.

  595. Deny yourself

  596. and then take up your cross.

  597. See,

  598. if you deny yourself,

  599. if you die to yourself,

  600. you will not boast

  601. about what you've done

  602. for Him.

  603. Instead,

  604. you'll say,

  605. have mercy on me,

  606. a sinner.

  607. Let me,

  608. let me please you today.

  609. This is the day

  610. that you have made.

  611. It's a big difference.

  612. Big,

  613. big difference.

  614. So,

  615. we know the,

  616. we know the religious activities

  617. here in,

  618. in,

  619. in our churches.

  620. We,

  621. we,

  622. we can name them all.

  623. How about some religious activities

  624. in two other religions?

  625. Hindu.

  626. A Hindu religion.

  627. Live a life

  628. that has a growing awareness

  629. of God.

  630. Learn about God.

  631. He's around everywhere.

  632. Sounds okay.

  633. Worship an icon

  634. of your choosing.

  635. Okay?

  636. Pick a statue

  637. and worship it.

  638. Pray with chants

  639. and songs

  640. so that the gods

  641. can hear you.

  642. Hindu is where we get

  643. the word karma from

  644. or where the word karma

  645. comes from

  646. and the definition

  647. of karma

  648. is the path

  649. of right action.

  650. So,

  651. it's a work,

  652. it's a do,

  653. do,

  654. do religion

  655. that leads to nowhere.

  656. Islam.

  657. Islam's big.

  658. Five pillars

  659. of Islam.

  660. Do you know what they are?

  661. I'm going to

  662. pronounce these incorrect

  663. so don't judge me.

  664. Shahada,

  665. there is no God

  666. but Allah

  667. and Muhammad

  668. is his messenger.

  669. Okay?

  670. Number one.

  671. Salat,

  672. the practice of praying

  673. five times a day

  674. at times set

  675. by Allah.

  676. Zarkat,

  677. giving up,

  678. giving of a set amount

  679. to charity.

  680. Psalm,

  681. fasting during Ramadan

  682. and haji.

  683. Muslims from all

  684. ethnic groups

  685. stand together

  686. in front of the

  687. Kaaba,

  688. I think,

  689. the cube-shaped

  690. building in Saudi Arabia.

  691. You've seen it.

  692. It's supposed to be

  693. the holiest place

  694. for Muslims.

  695. works-based religion.

  696. Do, do, do, do, do,

  697. and it leads to nothing.

  698. It's all works

  699. and it doesn't work.

  700. We have nothing

  701. to boast about

  702. before God

  703. and ourselves.

  704. If, however,

  705. you are a Christian,

  706. if you are born again,

  707. regenerate believer,

  708. and you believe

  709. that Jesus Christ

  710. came, died,

  711. and resurrected

  712. for your sins,

  713. then you can boast.

  714. But you boast

  715. about Christ

  716. and you boast

  717. in Christ.

  718. Galatians 6, 14.

  719. But Paul says,

  720. but far be it

  721. from me to boast

  722. except in the cross

  723. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  724. by which the world

  725. has been crucified

  726. to me

  727. and I

  728. to the world.

  729. So,

  730. Abraham was not

  731. justified

  732. by works.

  733. Paul clearly

  734. communicates that.

  735. So, second point,

  736. Abraham was justified

  737. by faith.

  738. And this we find

  739. in verses 3-5.

  740. It says,

  741. For what does

  742. the Scripture say?

  743. Abraham believed God

  744. and it was counted

  745. to him as righteousness.

  746. Now, to the one

  747. who works,

  748. his wages are not

  749. counted as a gift,

  750. but as his due.

  751. And to the one

  752. who does not work,

  753. but believes in him

  754. who justifies the ungodly,

  755. his faith

  756. is counted

  757. as righteousness.

  758. See,

  759. Paul uses

  760. the patriarch

  761. of the Jewish people.

  762. The father of them.

  763. They would all claim him.

  764. He uses him

  765. to make his argument.

  766. A man who lived

  767. 2,000 years

  768. before Christ,

  769. which means he lived

  770. 2,000 years

  771. plus some

  772. before Paul

  773. is writing

  774. this letter.

  775. He chooses

  776. Abraham

  777. because what we do

  778. so often by

  779. we tend

  780. to elevate guys

  781. and put them

  782. on pedestals,

  783. don't we?

  784. John Piper,

  785. Billy Graham,

  786. David Platt,

  787. Bono.

  788. Come on,

  789. you're laughing,

  790. but it's true.

  791. That is

  792. an odd collection

  793. of people,

  794. but

  795. throw Bono in there.

  796. But we do it.

  797. We lift up people

  798. and we say,

  799. sometimes we lift up

  800. our pastors.

  801. I did.

  802. And now I'm a pastor.

  803. I'm like,

  804. please don't lift me up.

  805. I lifted up my pastor

  806. and I thought,

  807. man,

  808. this guy,

  809. he's got it.

  810. He looks perfect like it.

  811. And we lift him up.

  812. See,

  813. the Jewish people

  814. lifted and elevated

  815. Abraham.

  816. The perfect,

  817. faithful patriarch.

  818. And because of that,

  819. let's dig a little deeper.

  820. Abraham was called

  821. by God

  822. out of Ur,

  823. land of the Chaldeans.

  824. Okay?

  825. It was an evil,

  826. pagan,

  827. worshiping country.

  828. Evil.

  829. Abraham

  830. was his name

  831. before Abraham.

  832. He was a pagan.

  833. He

  834. did not know

  835. who this God was

  836. when God called him.

  837. Out of the millions

  838. of people

  839. that God could have chosen,

  840. He chose Abram

  841. and God had no idea

  842. or Abram had no idea

  843. who this God was.

  844. But God called him

  845. and he followed.

  846. He went where he didn't know.

  847. He obeyed without understanding.

  848. This is where the story ends

  849. for a lot of people.

  850. See,

  851. we pick out

  852. this story

  853. and we pick out

  854. Abraham with Isaac

  855. where he obeys God

  856. and he takes Isaac up

  857. to sacrifice Isaac

  858. and God provides

  859. a goat for him.

  860. So we say,

  861. oh,

  862. Abraham,

  863. he's so faithful.

  864. Hebrews 11

  865. talks about Abraham

  866. being faithful,

  867. but

  868. there's more to the story.

  869. How about the story

  870. in Genesis 12

  871. where Abraham

  872. tells Sarah,

  873. his wife,

  874. to lie and say

  875. she's his sister

  876. because he feared his life.

  877. Not so honest.

  878. So we have

  879. Abraham who is faithful

  880. and we have Abraham

  881. who's sinful.

  882. What about

  883. later on?

  884. God has given

  885. Abraham the covenant.

  886. I'm going to bless

  887. you.

  888. I'm going to bless

  889. generations after you.

  890. Your people,

  891. your children's

  892. children's children

  893. will be blessed.

  894. Abraham didn't believe

  895. God

  896. or didn't trust

  897. completely

  898. because what did he do?

  899. He had

  900. an adulterous affair

  901. with Hagar.

  902. Coming,

  903. his wife's idea,

  904. Sarah's idea,

  905. you need to have a son

  906. because you don't have one yet

  907. and you're getting old.

  908. the luster is

  909. being removed.

  910. The shine

  911. from Abraham

  912. is being

  913. removed.

  914. The elevated

  915. Jewish

  916. leader

  917. is just a man

  918. and a man

  919. in need

  920. of salvation.

  921. And this salvation

  922. comes

  923. to the conduit

  924. called faith.

  925. Faith is the conduit.

  926. Now,

  927. some people will teach

  928. that my faith,

  929. I give Jesus,

  930. I give God my faith

  931. and I receive righteousness.

  932. That it's an exchange.

  933. That I have so much faith

  934. that God saves me.

  935. That is incorrect.

  936. Faith is the conduit

  937. by which we receive

  938. salvation.

  939. And I'll explain

  940. in just a minute.

  941. Verse 3 says,

  942. For what does the Scripture say?

  943. Abraham believed God

  944. and it was counted to him

  945. as righteousness.

  946. Counted.

  947. This word is a credit,

  948. a transaction,

  949. an exchange.

  950. See,

  951. Abraham believed

  952. the conduit

  953. and our Lord's

  954. righteousness

  955. came on him.

  956. Transaction,

  957. exchange,

  958. credit.

  959. Here's why faith

  960. is a conduit

  961. and not

  962. an exchange.

  963. Okay?

  964. There's an exchange

  965. that happens

  966. but faith

  967. is not that

  968. trade.

  969. I hope I'm not

  970. confusing you.

  971. If our faith

  972. wasn't

  973. a conduit

  974. but the payment

  975. for the price

  976. then we would have

  977. all room to boast.

  978. And then what Paul

  979. is saying here

  980. would not mean anything

  981. because

  982. we would be able

  983. to boast.

  984. Verse 4 says,

  985. Now to the one

  986. who works

  987. his wages

  988. are not counted

  989. as a gift

  990. but as his due.

  991. Okay?

  992. Clear.

  993. God makes

  994. perfect sense.

  995. Which

  996. then

  997. is works-based

  998. salvation

  999. which Paul

  1000. is proving

  1001. impossible.

  1002. If this happens

  1003. then the person

  1004. who worked

  1005. and received

  1006. salvation,

  1007. justification

  1008. through his works

  1009. receives glory

  1010. and steals

  1011. the glory

  1012. reserved

  1013. for God

  1014. Almighty.

  1015. All creation

  1016. was created

  1017. for God's glory.

  1018. Romans 11

  1019. 36

  1020. For from him

  1021. and through him

  1022. and to him

  1023. are all things.

  1024. To him

  1025. be glory

  1026. forever.

  1027. Amen.

  1028. Now this is not

  1029. just a conclusion

  1030. to a thought.

  1031. This is a proclamation.

  1032. To him

  1033. be glory

  1034. forever and ever.

  1035. Amen.

  1036. John MacArthur

  1037. says the primary

  1038. purpose of the

  1039. gospel is not

  1040. to save men

  1041. but to glorify

  1042. God.

  1043. Now let's

  1044. John MacArthur

  1045. said it

  1046. but it's rooted

  1047. in Scripture.

  1048. Ephesians 3

  1049. 20 and 21

  1050. Now to him

  1051. who is able

  1052. to do far

  1053. more abundantly

  1054. than all that we

  1055. ask or think

  1056. according to the

  1057. power at work

  1058. within us

  1059. to him

  1060. be glory

  1061. in the church

  1062. and in Christ

  1063. Jesus

  1064. throughout all

  1065. generations

  1066. forever and ever.

  1067. All generations

  1068. forever and ever.

  1069. Amen.

  1070. It is an act

  1071. by God

  1072. on our lives

  1073. and not

  1074. the reverse.

  1075. Now we do

  1076. have responsibility.

  1077. We do have

  1078. we do respond

  1079. but not after

  1080. or not until

  1081. God has

  1082. worked.

  1083. Verse 5

  1084. And to the

  1085. one who does

  1086. not work

  1087. but believes

  1088. in him

  1089. who justifies

  1090. the ungodly

  1091. his faith

  1092. is counted

  1093. as righteousness.

  1094. Praise God

  1095. for verse 5.

  1096. For the ungodly

  1097. is you

  1098. and it is me.

  1099. That's the

  1100. Muslim.

  1101. That's the

  1102. Hindu man.

  1103. That's the

  1104. pagan

  1105. atheist.

  1106. All of us

  1107. before Christ

  1108. with a need

  1109. greater than

  1110. any other

  1111. need.

  1112. with a debt

  1113. we could

  1114. not pay.

  1115. I'm going to

  1116. read a story

  1117. to you

  1118. called

  1119. A Great

  1120. Debt

  1121. Who Can

  1122. Pay.

  1123. I hope I

  1124. don't bore

  1125. you.

  1126. Harry

  1127. Ironside

  1128. used to

  1129. tell about

  1130. a young

  1131. Russian

  1132. soldier

  1133. because his

  1134. father was

  1135. a friend

  1136. of Tsar

  1137. Nicholas I.

  1138. The young

  1139. man had

  1140. been made

  1141. paymaster

  1142. in one

  1143. of the

  1144. barracks.

  1145. The young

  1146. man meant

  1147. well but

  1148. his character

  1149. was not up

  1150. to his

  1151. responsibility.

  1152. He took

  1153. to gambling

  1154. and eventually

  1155. gambling away

  1156. a great deal

  1157. of the

  1158. government's

  1159. money as

  1160. well as

  1161. all of

  1162. his own.

  1163. In due

  1164. course the

  1165. man received

  1166. notice that

  1167. a representative

  1168. of the Tsar

  1169. was coming

  1170. to check

  1171. accounts and

  1172. he knew

  1173. he was in

  1174. trouble.

  1175. That evening

  1176. he got out

  1177. the books

  1178. and totaled

  1179. the funds

  1180. he owed.

  1181. Then he

  1182. went to

  1183. the safe

  1184. and got

  1185. out his

  1186. own

  1187. pitifully

  1188. small

  1189. amount

  1190. of

  1191. money.

  1192. As he

  1193. sat and

  1194. looked at

  1195. the two

  1196. he was

  1197. overwhelmed

  1198. at the

  1199. astronomical

  1200. debt

  1201. versus his

  1202. own

  1203. small

  1204. change.

  1205. He was

  1206. ruined.

  1207. He knew

  1208. he would

  1209. be disgraced.

  1210. At last

  1211. the young

  1212. soldier

  1213. edit that

  1214. for me

  1215. John.

  1216. at last

  1217. the young

  1218. soldier

  1219. determined

  1220. to take

  1221. his

  1222. life.

  1223. He

  1224. pulled

  1225. out

  1226. his

  1227. revolver

  1228. placed

  1229. it

  1230. on

  1231. the

  1232. table

  1233. before

  1234. him

  1235. and

  1236. wrote

  1237. a

  1238. summation

  1239. of

  1240. his

  1241. misdeeds.

  1242. At

  1243. the

  1244. bottom

  1245. of

  1246. the

  1247. ledger

  1248. where

  1249. he

  1250. had

  1251. totaled

  1252. up

  1253. his

  1254. illegal

  1255. borrowings

  1256. he

  1257. wrote

  1258. a

  1259. great

  1260. debt

  1261. who

  1262. can

  1263. pay.

  1264. He

  1265. decided

  1266. that

  1267. at

  1268. the

  1269. stroke

  1270. of

  1271. midnight

  1272. he

  1273. would

  1274. die.

  1275. As

  1276. the

  1277. evening

  1278. wore

  1279. on

  1280. the

  1281. young

  1282. soldier

  1283. drew

  1284. drowsy

  1285. sleep.

  1286. That

  1287. night

  1288. Tsar

  1289. Nicholas

  1290. I

  1291. as

  1292. was

  1293. sometimes

  1294. his

  1295. custom

  1296. made

  1297. the

  1298. rounds

  1299. of

  1300. the

  1301. barracks.

  1302. Seeing

  1303. a

  1304. light

  1305. he

  1306. stopped

  1307. looked

  1308. in

  1309. and

  1310. saw

  1311. the

  1312. young

  1313. man

  1314. asleep.

  1315. He

  1316. recognized

  1317. him

  1318. immediately

  1319. and

  1320. looking

  1321. over

  1322. his

  1323. shoulder

  1324. saw

  1325. the

  1326. ledger

  1327. and

  1328. realized

  1329. all

  1330. that

  1331. had

  1332. taken

  1333. place.

  1334. He

  1335. was

  1336. about

  1337. to

  1338. awaken

  1339. him

  1340. and

  1341. put

  1342. him

  1343. under

  1344. a

  1345. rest

  1346. when

  1347. his

  1348. eyes

  1349. fastened

  1350. on

  1351. the

  1352. young

  1353. man's

  1354. message

  1355. a

  1356. who

  1357. can

  1358. pay.

  1359. Suddenly

  1360. with a

  1361. surge

  1362. of

  1363. magnanimity

  1364. he

  1365. reached

  1366. over

  1367. wrote

  1368. one

  1369. word

  1370. at

  1371. the

  1372. bottom

  1373. of

  1374. the

  1375. ledger

  1376. and

  1377. slipped

  1378. out.

  1379. When

  1380. the

  1381. young

  1382. man

  1383. awoke

  1384. he

  1385. glanced

  1386. at

  1387. the

  1388. clock

  1389. and

  1390. saw

  1391. that

  1392. it

  1393. was

  1394. long

  1395. after

  1396. midnight

  1397. he

  1398. reached

  1399. for

  1400. his

  1401. revolver

  1416. that

  1417. he

  1418. had

  1419. not

  1421. !

  1422. before

  1423. there

  1424. beneath

  1425. his

  1426. writing

  1427. a

  1428. great

  1429. debt

  1430. who

  1431. can

  1433. was

  1434. written

  1435. Nicholas

  1436. he

  1437. was

  1438. dumbfounded

  1439. it

  1440. was

  1441. the

  1442. tsar's

  1443. signature

  1444. he

  1445. said

  1446. to

  1447. himself

  1448. the

  1449. tsar

  1450. must

  1451. have

  1452. come

  1453. by

  1454. when

  1455. I

  1456. was

  1457. asleep

  1458. he

  1459. has

  1461. the

  1479. the

  1480. word

  1481. of

  1482. the

  1483. tsar

  1484. and

  1485. the

  1486. next

  1487. morning

  1488. a

  1489. messenger

  1490. came

  1491. from

  1492. the

  1503. and

  1504. the

  1505. tsar

  1506. did

  1507. pay

  1508. now

  1509. we

  1510. compare

  1511. God's

  1512. righteousness

  1513. with

  1514. our

  1515. own

  1516. tawdry

  1517. performance

  1518. we

  1519. asked

  1520. the

  1522. a

  1525. to

  1526. God

  1527. who

  1542. Jesus

  1543. Christ

  1544. only

  1545. he

  1546. can

  1547. pay

  1548. Jesus

  1549. paid

  1550. the

  1552. that

  1553. we

  1554. could

  1555. not

  1559. said

  1560. that

  1561. faith

  1562. is the

  1564. by which

  1565. the

  1566. righteousness

  1567. of our

  1610. and

  1611. carried

  1628. for

  1744. used

  1745. Abraham

  2210. can

  2211. no

  2212. longer

  2213. change

  2214. your

  2215. bills

  2216. for

  2217. the

  2218. new

  2219. ones

  2220. even

  2221. the

  2222. president

  2223. is

  2224. not

  2225. exempt

  2226. from

  2227. this

  2228. rule

  2229. however

  2230. because

  2231. I

  2232. believe

  2233. that

  2234. you

  2235. really

  2236. worked

  2237. hard

  2238. to

  2239. save

  2240. this

  2241. money

  2242. I

  2243. am

  2244. changing

  2245. your

  2246. money

  2247. for

  2248. new

  2249. money

  2250. for

  2251. my

  2252. own

  2253. personal

  2254. funds

  2255. so that

  2256. you

  2257. will be

  2258. able

  2259. to

  2260. buy

  2261. your

  2262. ox

  2263. there

  2264. was

  2265. nothing

  2266. the

  2267. farmer

  2268. could

  2269. do

  2270. he

  2271. was

  2272. shown

  2273. favor

  2274. by

  2275. the

  2276. president

  2277. he

  2278. was

  2279. blessed

  2280. by

  2281. the

  2282. president

  2283. he

  2284. was

  2285. shown

  2286. grace

  2287. likewise

  2288. when

  2289. sinners

  2290. us

  2291. before

  2292. christ

  2293. have

  2294. no

  2295. ability

  2296. none

  2297. to

  2298. buy

  2299. their

  2300. salvation

  2301. we

  2302. have

  2303. to

  2304. cast

  2305. ourselves

  2306. at

  2307. the

  2308. mercy

  2309. of

  2310. almighty

  2311. god

  2312. and

  2313. accept

  2314. by

  2315. faith

  2316. the

  2317. lord's

  2318. atoning

  2319. work

  2320. on

  2321. their

  2322. behalf

  2323. on

  2324. our

  2325. behalf

  2326. then

  2327. we

  2328. can

  2329. stand

  2330. we

  2331. can

  2332. stand

  2333. forgiven

  2334. and

  2335. righteous

  2336. not

  2337. because

  2338. of our

  2339. works

  2340. not

  2341. because

  2342. of

  2343. what

  2344. we've

  2345. done

  2346. but

  2347. because

  2348. of

  2349. our

  2350. lord

  2351. jesus

  2352. christ

  2353. let's

  2354. pray

  2355. father

  2356. we

  2357. thank you

  2358. for

  2359. this

  2360. time

  2361. thank you

  2362. for your

  2363. word

  2364. thank you

  2365. that your

  2366. word

  2367. proclaims

  2368. truth

  2369. and in

  2370. that

  2371. truth

  2372. tells

  2373. of a

  2374. redeeming

  2375. story

  2376. the

  2377. redeeming

  2378. story

  2379. of

  2380. us

  2381. of

  2382. abraham

  2383. !

  2384. of david!

  2385. and the

  2386. call that you

  2387. have on

  2388. lives

  2389. god

  2390. i pray

  2391. that you

  2392. would

  2393. call

  2394. those

  2395. to you

  2396. this

  2397. morning

  2398. those

  2399. that you

  2400. have

  2401. called

  2402. that you

  2403. have

  2404. chosen

  2405. god

  2406. that you

  2407. would

  2408. bring

  2409. people

  2410. to you

  2411. this

  2412. morning

  2413. for the

  2414. first

  2415. time

  2416. they

  2417. could

  2418. not

  2419. do

  2420. anything

  2421. but

  2422. respond

  2423. to the

  2424. call

  2425. that you

  2426. have

  2427. on

  2428. their

  2429. life

  2430. i

  2431. thank you

  2432. for

  2433. for

  2434. justification

  2435. i

  2436. thank you

  2437. that

  2438. that i

  2439. have

  2440. nothing

  2441. to boast

  2442. about

  2443. that

  2444. nothing

  2445. i've

  2446. done

  2447. has

  2448. earned

  2449. what

  2450. you

  2451. have

  2452. done

  2453. for

  2454. me

  2455. but

  2456. what

  2457. i

  2458. can

  2459. boast

  2460. about

  2461. i

  2462. can

  2463. boast

  2464. about

  2465. you

  2466. and

  2467. your

  2468. son

  2469. lord

  2470. jesus

  2471. christ

  2472. i

  2473. can

  2474. boast

  2475. about

  2476. his

  2477. life

  2478. his

  2479. death

  2480. and

  2481. his

  2482. resurrection

  2483. i

  2484. can

  2485. boast

  2486. about

  2487. the

  2488. grace

  2489. that

  2490. you

  2491. have

  2492. shown

  2493. us

  2494. i

  2495. can

  2496. boast

  2497. about

  2498. the

  2499. work

  2500. that

  2501. you're

  2502. doing

  2503. in

  2504. this

  2505. world

  2506. around

  2507. us

  2508. i

  2509. thank

  2510. you

  2511. for

  2512. for

  2513. calling

  2514. me

  2515. i

  2516. thank

  2517. you

  2518. that

  2519. i

  2520. can

  2521. stand

  2522. here

  2523. and

  2524. call

  2525. you

  2526. father

  2527. and

  2528. i

  2529. can

  2530. pray

  2531. to

  2532. you

  2533. i

  2534. thank

  2535. you

  2536. for

  2537. the

  2538. people

  2539. in

  2540. this

  2541. room

  2542. that

  2543. can

  2544. do

  2545. !

  2546. !

  2547. we

  2548. love
