  1. So, the first point this morning.

  2. Justification by faith apart from works eliminates the ability to boast.

  3. ! It eliminates the ability to boast.

  4. ! Verses 1-5 is where we find this from our text.

  5. !

  6. The word in the church is not exempt from those same things.

  7. Lines from movies like, show me the money.

  8. Or, a man's got to do what a man's got to do.

  9. Sit and stew in our minds.

  10. Our society, and not just America, is full of examples.

  11. Athletes embody this me first attitude.

  12. The wide receiver from the NFL, Terrell Owens, famous for saying,

  13. I love me some me.

  14. Grammatically incorrect, but I love me some me.

  15. It's so bad among athletes that college football is starting in the next three weeks

  16. that the NCAA sets up regulations and celebration rules

  17. that if a player scores a touchdown or does something great,

  18. he starts celebrating himself.

  19. He's penalized 15 yards or whatever it is, and he hurts the team.

  20. What they want is they want the players to celebrate the team and not the individual.

  21. It just comes out of that person, though.

  22. Which is ironic, because isn't that what sports are good for,

  23. is teaching kids about teamwork?

  24. It just comes out of us.

  25. Let's be realistic.

  26. It's what we are born with.

  27. It's why we have to teach our kids how to share.

  28. We went to see a Votie Bauckham conference last weekend,

  29. and one thing that he reminded us of is,

  30. you know, parents will complain,

  31. well, my kids just don't share.

  32. And he asked a question to that parent.

  33. He said, did you teach them how to share?

  34. Ouch.

  35. Ouch.

  36. As a parent of four,

  37. yeah, did I teach my kids how to share?

  38. I don't know.

  39. Or do I just yell at them and say,

  40. share with your brother or sister.

  41. Be nice.

  42. We have to teach them these things,

  43. because we are born with selfishness.

  44. It is no wonder that pornography is a multi-billion dollar business,

  45. because we think about ourselves.

  46. We're selfish.

  47. It feeds into that.

  48. Adam and Eve, when they sinned,

  49. they acted on the self-gratifying desire

  50. and not on the selfless God-given joy.

  51. So to our text,

  52. we can go all the way back to chapter 3,

  53. verse 27,

  54. which reads,

  55. Then what becomes of boasting?

  56. Paul says,

  57. It is excluded.

  58. This work of salvation is a work of God,

  59. so there is no boasting.

  60. It is terminated.

  61. It is not possible.

  62. And in chapter 4, verses 1 and 2 says,

  63. What then shall we say was gained by Abraham,

  64. our forefather, according to the flesh?

  65. For if Abraham was justified by works,

  66. he has something to boast about.

  67. Agreed.

  68. The next three words,

  69. or four words,

  70. but not before God.

  71. It is impossible

  72. to boast before God.

  73. Before we go any further,

  74. I thought it would be good

  75. if I could define salvation for us.

  76. Not the act of being saved

  77. or not the way you get saved,

  78. but the three phases of salvation.

  79. Because I'm throwing around this word justification,

  80. and some of you might not even know what that means.

  81. So, here's where we sit.

  82. Three phases of salvation.

  83. We have justification,

  84. we have sanctification,

  85. and we have glorification.

  86. Now, justification is that moment

  87. of being in right standing with God.

  88. When Christ, through His obedience on the cross,

  89. bore the wrath from the Father that we deserved.

  90. So, because of Christ's death,

  91. He gave us,

  92. or in Christ's death,

  93. He gave us His righteousness.

  94. So now, as a Christian,

  95. we are righteous in Christ.

  96. We are made right.

  97. We are not judged by our sin.

  98. Our sin is covered by the blood of Christ,

  99. and we are made right

  100. and can stand before the Father.

  101. Sanctification is the ongoing process.

  102. So, justification is a one-time thing.

  103. Okay?

  104. It is a one-time at salvation,

  105. at faith.

  106. Now, sanctification is an ongoing process

  107. of God perfecting us

  108. through trials,

  109. through struggles,

  110. through discipline,

  111. and through everyday life.

  112. Now, on one hand, we are perfect.

  113. Okay?

  114. On one hand, at justification,

  115. we are made right.

  116. But on the other hand,

  117. living it out, we're not.

  118. Romans chapter 7 reminds us

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  119. that we still struggle

  120. to fight against the flesh and sin.

  121. But God is perfecting us.

  122. He is working in us.

  123. He is setting us apart.

  124. And the last thing,

  125. the last phase is glorification.

  126. Now, this is the final perfection

  127. of every saint.

  128. This is what we look forward to

  129. when God will perfect us.

  130. This is what Peter talks about

  131. as the living hope.

  132. The hope that we'll never die,

  133. that never changes

  134. until it comes to fruition.

  135. We have this hope,

  136. this glorification

  137. that's going to happen.

  138. Okay?

  139. So these are the three phases

  140. of salvation.

  141. So when I talk about justification,

  142. I'm talking about that moment,

  143. that moment of faith

  144. when we are made right before God

  145. because of the work of Christ.

  146. So, justification by faith

  147. apart from works

  148. eliminates the ability

  149. to boast in ourselves.

  150. It is impossible to boast.

  151. And when he's talking about boast here,

  152. he's not talking about

  153. check out these skills that I have.

  154. Watch me on the court

  155. or watch me on the field

  156. or look how good I can spill these words

  157. or write or whatever it is.

  158. He's talking about works

  159. that we think lead to salvation.

  160. This kind of boasting.

  161. It cannot be done.

  162. It cannot be done.

  163. The world around us

  164. is saturated with self-indulgence.

  165. It is no surprise

  166. when we try to base salvation

  167. on our own works.

  168. No surprise

  169. when we try to say,

  170. look what I've done.

  171. Before Christ,

  172. we are selfish.

  173. So that selfishness

  174. even infiltrates

  175. our religious beliefs.

  176. So, if I just go to church,

  177. if I just love my neighbor,

  178. if I just tithe,

  179. or if I just attend

  180. a new members class,

  181. or if I just get baptized,

  182. then,

  183. then,

  184. I can be saved

  185. and go to heaven.

  186. That's not the way it works.

  187. It is impossible

  188. for those actions

  189. to lead to salvation.

  190. And that's the point

  191. that Paul is making here.

  192. If we think that those things

  193. are going to lead to salvation

  194. is a strand of legalism.

  195. John Stott says,

  196. legalism is the misguided attempt

  197. to earn our salvation

  198. by obedience to the law.

  199. And we make laws all the time.

  200. If I just do this.

  201. Let's say,

  202. let's say you are a humble,

  203. you are a humble introvert.

  204. Let's say you would never brag

  205. or boast

  206. about anything you have done.

  207. You say,

  208. that's not me.

  209. I would never do that.

  210. There's going to be a time

  211. when you are going to be forced

  212. from your gut,

  213. from your soul.

  214. There's going to be a moment

  215. when you're going to be forced

  216. to explain

  217. why you chose to live

  218. the life that you live.

  219. There's going to be that time

  220. before the King of Kings

  221. at judgment.

  222. And the news for you

  223. is going to be very bad.

  224. you will say anything

  225. to avoid the punishment

  226. that sin deserves.

  227. Now,

  228. as a Christian,

  229. we won't have to talk.

  230. We'll have an advocate for us

  231. who says,

  232. who claims us,

  233. whose righteousness

  234. we now have.

  235. See,

  236. the gospel works

  237. the opposite in us

  238. and out of us.

  239. See,

  240. we,

  241. with being self-centered

  242. and selfish,

  243. we want to exalt ourselves.

  244. We want to boast

  245. about what we can do

  246. and accomplish.

  247. The gospel, though,

  248. changes that.

  249. We start boasting

  250. about what God has done.

  251. The justification

  252. that He has shown us

  253. by faith.

  254. That's why

  255. we're called

  256. to be salt and light

  257. to our neighbors.

  258. It says,

  259. don't hide it.

  260. It says,

  261. don't cover it with a basket.

  262. Don't cover the light

  263. with a basket.

  264. We have this

  265. to share.

  266. The gospel changes that

  267. from the inside out.

  268. So verse

  269. 1-2,

  270. now 3-5.

  271. It gives us the account

  272. of Abraham receiving

  273. righteousness.

  274. It says,

  275. for what does the Scripture say?

  276. Abraham believed God

  277. and it was counted to him

  278. as righteousness.

  279. Now,

  280. the one who works

  281. his wages

  282. are not counted

  283. as a gift,

  284. but as his due.

  285. And to the one

  286. who does not work,

  287. but believes in him

  288. who justifies the ungodly,

  289. his faith is counted

  290. as righteousness.

  291. It is nothing

  292. that Abraham did,

  293. but it is what God

  294. did in Abraham.

  295. God gave him

  296. the faith to believe.

  297. And because he believed,

  298. he was counted

  299. as righteous.

  300. Verse 5 says,

  301. and to the one

  302. who does not work,

  303. but believes in him

  304. who justifies the ungodly,

  305. his faith

  306. is counted

  307. as righteousness.

  308. righteousness.

  309. This same action

  310. of being counted

  311. can be applied

  312. to you and to me.

  313. The same counted

  314. that was applied

  315. to Abraham

  316. can be applied

  317. now to us.

  318. But,

  319. like Abraham,

  320. we have no room

  321. to boast.

  322. We are the clay

  323. in the potter's hands.

  324. Read Romans 9.

  325. Take a look.

  326. The clay doesn't say

  327. to the potter,

  328. why did you make me

  329. this way?

  330. The clay just gets

  331. molded into whatever

  332. he gets molded into.

  333. When God changes

  334. our hearts,

  335. He gives us

  336. something to boast about.

  337. I've already referenced

  338. this.

  339. Matthew 5.

  340. You are the light

  341. of the world.

  342. Nobody will cover

  343. the light with a basket.

  344. It is something

  345. to boast about.

  346. It is something

  347. to share

  348. what Christ has done.

  349. That light

  350. only comes

  351. from Christ.

  352. Matthew 13.

  353. 44

  354. tells of the

  355. kingdom of heaven

  356. is like a treasure

  357. hidden in a field

  358. which a man

  359. found and covered up.

  360. Then,

  361. in his joy,

  362. he goes and sells

  363. all that he has

  364. and he buys

  365. the field.

  366. The work of God

  367. is big enough

  368. and good enough

  369. to boast about

  370. and it's also

  371. good enough

  372. to sell everything

  373. and go buy

  374. a piece of land.

  375. So,

  376. the grace of God

  377. can move us

  378. to sell everything.

  379. Would you?

  380. The grace of God

  381. can cause us

  382. to stop going to school

  383. and move to the mission field.

  384. Would you?

  385. The grace of God

  386. can cause you

  387. to run to Iran.

  388. Would you?

  389. The grace of God

  390. can cause you

  391. to stay right

  392. where you are.

  393. Can you?

  394. In all situations,

  395. the light that God

  396. has put in you

  397. must not be covered

  398. by a basket.

  399. And the way

  400. it's covered

  401. by a basket

  402. is that

  403. self-gratifying

  404. part of us.

  405. That selfish

  406. part of us.

  407. Once we

  408. cover the light,

  409. who's going to see it?

  410. They're going to see us

  411. and see what we treasure.

  412. So,

  413. don't treasure

  414. what you think

  415. is light.

  416. Treasure the actual light

  417. and let the world

  418. see it.

  419. So,

  420. not only does

  421. justification

  422. by faith

  423. apart from works

  424. eliminate

  425. boasting,

  426. it is also

  427. a blessing

  428. beyond our comprehension.

  429. Verse 7 and 8.

  430. quoted from

  431. Psalms,

  432. David wrote this

  433. and it says,

  434. Blessed are those

  435. whose lawless deeds

  436. are forgiven

  437. and whose sins

  438. are covered.

  439. Blessed is the man

  440. against whom

  441. the Lord

  442. will not count

  443. his sin.

  444. Now,

  445. this truth,

  446. to measure

  447. blessing

  448. is impossible.

  449. And this blessing

  450. is

  451. huge.

  452. So,

  453. I've made a list

  454. to give us

  455. a glimmer,

  456. just a fraction

  457. of this

  458. great blessing.

  459. So,

  460. in Christ,

  461. your sins

  462. are forgiven.

  463. Any and everything,

  464. past,

  465. present,

  466. and future.

  467. In Christ,

  468. your sins

  469. are covered

  470. by the blood

  471. of Jesus,

  472. which means

  473. God the Father

  474. sees only the blood

  475. and not the sin.

  476. In Christ,

  477. your sins

  478. will not be counted

  479. against you.

  480. In Christ,

  481. your sins

  482. have been blotted

  483. out.

  484. In Christ,

  485. your sins

  486. have been thrown

  487. as far as

  488. the east is

  489. from the west.

  490. In Christ,

  491. you are righteous

  492. before God.

  493. In Christ,

  494. you have been adopted

  495. into the family

  496. of God.

  497. In Christ,

  498. your inheritance

  499. is immeasurable.

  500. In Christ,

  501. you can call

  502. Abba,

  503. Father,

  504. Daddy.

  505. In Christ,

  506. there is nothing

  507. you can do

  508. that will make

  509. God love you

  510. any less.

  511. In Christ,

  512. there is nothing

  513. you can do

  514. that will make

  515. God love you

  516. any more.

  517. In Christ,

  518. you can live

  519. with a confidence

  520. and a boldness

  521. in Christ.

  522. In Christ,

  523. you have hope

  524. beyond this world.

  525. In Christ,

  526. you can love

  527. those you wouldn't

  528. love otherwise.

  529. In Christ,

  530. you are being

  531. perfected,

  532. so rejoice.

  533. In Christ,

  534. God is working

  535. all things

  536. for your good.

  537. In Christ,

  538. the Creator

  539. of the universe

  540. who spoke

  541. the stars

  542. and the mountains

  543. and rivers

  544. into existence

  545. wants community

  546. with you.

  547. In Christ,

  548. you are not alone

  549. and will never

  550. be alone.

  551. In Christ,

  552. you have a comforter

  553. who can relate

  554. to anything

  555. you go through.

  556. Anything.

  557. In Christ,

  558. God is for you

  559. no matter

  560. the struggle.

  561. In Christ,

  562. God is always

  563. at work

  564. for your joy

  565. and His glory.

  566. All of this

  567. from Scripture,

  568. all of this

  569. can go on

  570. and on

  571. and on.

  572. fraction

  573. of the blessing.

  574. Now,

  575. I would encourage

  576. you to make

  577. your own list.

  578. Look at Scriptures.

  579. Treasure

  580. the God of the Bible

  581. by exploring

  582. His Word.

  583. Make a list

  584. for yourself

  585. of these things.

  586. If all this

  587. is true,

  588. if every bit

  589. of this

  590. is fact,

  591. then live

  592. different

  593. than the Mormon.

  594. Live different

  595. than the Jehovah's Witness.

  596. Live different

  597. than the Jewish

  598. rabbi

  599. or the Catholic

  600. priest.

  601. Because they

  602. don't have

  603. these truths

  604. to cling to.

  605. Don't just

  606. be the nice guy.

  607. Be the girl

  608. of the guy

  609. who loves Jesus.

  610. So not only

  611. does justification

  612. by faith

  613. apart from works

  614. eliminate boasting,

  615. which is a good thing,

  616. not a bad thing,

  617. not only is it

  618. a blessing

  619. beyond our comprehension,

  620. but it also

  621. defines works

  622. as an outpouring

  623. of faith.

  624. And this frees us.

  625. Find this

  626. in verse 9

  627. through the first

  628. part of verse 11.

  629. Read along with me.

  630. Is this blessing

  631. then only

  632. for the circumcised

  633. or also

  634. for the uncircumcised?

  635. We say

  636. that faith

  637. was counted

  638. to Abraham

  639. as righteousness.

  640. How then

  641. was it counted

  642. to him?

  643. Was it before

  644. or after

  645. he had been

  646. circumcised?

  647. It was not

  648. after,

  649. but before

  650. he was circumcised.

  651. He received

  652. the sign

  653. of circumcision

  654. as a seal

  655. of the righteousness

  656. that he had

  657. by faith

  658. while he was

  659. still

  660. uncircumcised.

  661. Now,

  662. Paul gives us

  663. three questions.

  664. Now,

  665. these questions

  666. he sees

  667. are going

  668. to be asked

  669. when he

  670. goes ahead

  671. and asks them

  672. and answers them

  673. for his argument.

  674. Now,

  675. we're going to

  676. focus on

  677. the last question

  678. first.

  679. That was

  680. the timing

  681. of Abraham

  682. being counted

  683. as righteous.

  684. When was it?

  685. Was it before

  686. or was it

  687. after circumcision?

  688. Now,

  689. if you're like me,

  690. knowing the stories

  691. that I know

  692. from the Bible,

  693. I'm not going

  694. to think of

  695. circumcision

  696. as the

  697. moment of

  698. salvation

  699. for Abraham.

  700. I might think

  701. of,

  702. okay,

  703. when was

  704. Abraham

  705. righteous?

  706. Was it

  707. before he

  708. went and

  709. followed God

  710. and God

  711. called him?

  712. Or was it

  713. after?

  714. Or I might

  715. think of

  716. where he

  717. took Isaac

  718. up.

  719. Was it

  720. before he

  721. took Isaac

  722. up to be

  723. sacrificed

  724. or after?

  725. Because those

  726. are big deals

  727. to me.

  728. I mean,

  729. those are

  730. great moments

  731. of faith.

  732. Not

  733. circumcision.

  734. Although,

  735. as you'll

  736. find out,

  737. I mean,

  738. Abraham

  739. was pretty

  740. old.

  741. Here's

  742. why it

  743. revolves

  744. around

  745. circumcision.

  746. John

  747. MacArthur

  748. wrote,

  749. and he

  750. put it

  751. best,

  752. and I'm

  753. just going

  754. to quote

  755. him.

  756. No sense

  757. to me

  758. trying to

  759. write it.

  760. Most Jews

  761. in the

  762. New Testament

  763. times were

  764. thoroughly

  765. convinced

  766. that circumcision

  767. was not

  768. only,

  769. not only

  770. the unique

  771. mark

  772. that set

  773. them apart

  774. from all

  775. other men

  776. as God's

  777. chosen people.

  778. So,

  779. it not

  780. only set

  781. them apart,

  782. but was

  783. also the

  784. means by

  785. which they

  786. became

  787. acceptable

  788. to God.

  789. So,

  790. they put

  791. all this

  792. weight and

  793. all this

  794. importance

  795. on this

  796. one act

  797. so that

  798. they could

  799. be

  800. acceptable

  801. to God.

  802. See,

  803. many Jews

  804. believed that

  805. salvation was

  806. based on

  807. their obedience

  808. to God

  809. in being

  810. circumcised.

  811. circumcised.

  812. Now,

  813. on top of

  814. that,

  815. their

  816. eternal

  817. security.

  818. So,

  819. they could

  820. say to

  821. God,

  822. look,

  823. God,

  824. I'm

  825. circumcised.

  826. I'm

  827. in heaven.

  828. Listen

  829. to this.

  830. Rabbi

  831. Menachem

  832. writes in

  833. his commentary

  834. on the

  835. book of

  836. Moses,

  837. our

  838. rabbis

  839. have said

  840. that no

  841. circumcised

  842. man will

  843. ever see

  844. hell.

  845. They have

  846. made

  847. circumcision

  848. a big

  849. deal.

  850. Listen

  851. to this.

  852. From the

  853. Jewish book

  854. entitled

  855. Akedeth

  856. Jezahok,

  857. Abraham

  858. sits before

  859. the gates

  860. of hell

  861. and does

  862. not allow

  863. that any

  864. circumcised

  865. Israelite

  866. should enter

  867. there.

  868. So,

  869. Abraham

  870. sits and

  871. if the

  872. man is

  873. circumcised,

  874. you're not

  875. going in

  876. here,

  877. buddy,

  878. go over

  879. there.

  880. You don't

  881. want in

  882. here,

  883. you don't

  884. want in

  885. hell.

  886. They have

  887. elevated

  888. circumcision.

  889. Now,

  890. I'm not

  891. telling you

  892. these things

  893. to say,

  894. look how

  895. much research

  896. I did.

  897. Listen to

  898. these words.

  899. Our

  900. rabbis have

  901. said that

  902. no circumcised

  903. man will

  904. ever see

  905. hell.

  906. That's a

  907. big deal.

  908. Abraham

  909. sits before

  910. the gate

  911. of hell

  912. and does

  913. not allow

  914. that any

  915. circumcised

  916. Israelite

  917. should enter

  918. there.

  919. They have

  920. elevated a

  921. religious act

  922. and thought,

  923. believed,

  924. that this

  925. religious act

  926. saved them.

  927. This

  928. religious act

  929. is where

  930. they became

  931. righteous.

  932. It's like

  933. any other

  934. religion,

  935. though,

  936. truthfully.

  937. Religion has

  938. been created

  939. by man for

  940. the purpose

  941. of being

  942. God or

  943. reaching God

  944. without

  945. Christ Jesus.

  946. Religions have

  947. been created

  948. by man for

  949. the purpose

  950. of being

  951. God or

  952. reaching God

  953. without

  954. Christ Jesus.

  955. But,

  956. justification

  957. by faith

  958. apart from

  959. works is

  960. not a

  961. religious

  962. activity or

  963. an action.

  964. It is a

  965. God activity.

  966. And because

  967. it is God,

  968. the works are

  969. a result of

  970. what God

  971. has done.

  972. So the

  973. timing of

  974. Abraham being

  975. justified is

  976. an important

  977. question.

  978. Now, we

  979. can just

  980. read the

  981. text or

  982. we can go

  983. to Genesis

  984. 15 and

  985. see where

  986. Abraham was

  987. made righteous

  988. and then

  989. Genesis 17

  990. where he

  991. gets circumcised

  992. and say,

  993. okay, well,

  994. it clearly

  995. was before.

  996. Pretty simple

  997. for us.

  998. Verse 11 of

  999. Romans chapter

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  1000. 4.

  1001. Abraham received

  1002. the sign of

  1003. circumcision as

  1004. a seal of

  1005. the righteousness

  1006. that he had

  1007. by faith

  1008. while he was

  1009. still uncircumcised.

  1010. circumcision was

  1011. established by

  1012. God first

  1013. as a sign

  1014. of the covenant

  1015. between God

  1016. and Abraham.

  1017. Genesis 17

  1018. 11.

  1019. It was to

  1020. remind the

  1021. Jewish people

  1022. of the covenant

  1023. that God

  1024. had made

  1025. and to

  1026. remind them

  1027. who they

  1028. belonged to

  1029. and to set

  1030. apart the

  1031. people of

  1032. Israel as

  1033. God's chosen

  1034. people.

  1035. That was

  1036. the purpose,

  1037. nothing more,

  1038. which is a

  1039. clear example

  1040. of how we

  1041. can deform

  1042. even the

  1043. good things

  1044. that God

  1045. sets up

  1046. for His

  1047. children.

  1048. Now,

  1049. in Abraham's

  1050. case,

  1051. obedience,

  1052. Abraham was

  1053. 99 years old

  1054. when he was

  1055. circumcised.

  1056. Obedience

  1057. followed being

  1058. made righteous.

  1059. Because he

  1060. was righteous,

  1061. he followed,

  1062. he obeyed.

  1063. He wasn't

  1064. counted as

  1065. righteous before

  1066. and then

  1067. once he

  1068. obeyed,

  1069. poof,

  1070. he's made

  1071. righteous.

  1072. It is

  1073. clearly

  1074. communicated

  1075. in Scripture

  1076. that it

  1077. was before.

  1078. Likewise,

  1079. for us,

  1080. our actions

  1081. should flow

  1082. from what

  1083. God has

  1084. done,

  1085. not

  1086. flowing to

  1087. what God

  1088. is going

  1089. to do.

  1090. So if we

  1091. work hard

  1092. enough,

  1093. God will

  1094. then save

  1095. us and

  1096. find us

  1097. worthy.

  1098. Our actions

  1099. should flow

  1100. from what

  1101. God has

  1102. done.

  1103. Which means

  1104. we look

  1105. forward to

  1106. loving those

  1107. we think

  1108. we can't.

  1109. We love

  1110. the body

  1111. of Christ.

  1112. We love

  1113. gathering with

  1114. the saints.

  1115. Which means

  1116. we are willing

  1117. to go

  1118. anywhere,

  1119. wherever that

  1120. leads us.

  1121. Which means

  1122. we love

  1123. God's creation

  1124. more than

  1125. others.

  1126. Which means

  1127. we hate

  1128. sin.

  1129. Which means

  1130. we mourn

  1131. for our lost

  1132. friends.

  1133. and which

  1134. means we

  1135. cherish

  1136. the mercies

  1137. of God

  1138. which are

  1139. new

  1140. every day.

  1141. Now one

  1142. of the

  1143. major

  1144. arguments

  1145. against

  1146. this

  1147. doctrine

  1148. of

  1149. justification

  1150. by faith

  1151. apart from

  1152. works

  1153. has been

  1154. that this

  1155. kind of

  1156. thinking

  1157. leads to

  1158. loose

  1159. living.

  1160. Well,

  1161. if you

  1162. were born

  1163. again,

  1164. if you

  1165. were made

  1166. righteous

  1167. without having

  1168. to do

  1169. anything,

  1170. then now

  1171. you have a

  1172. license to

  1173. go do

  1174. anything.

  1175. That's the

  1176. argument.

  1177. Well,

  1178. I say it

  1179. leads to

  1180. obedient

  1181. living,

  1182. and Paul

  1183. does as

  1184. well.

  1185. Turn to

  1186. Romans

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  1187. chapter 6.

  1188. Two chapters.

  1189. Romans

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  1190. chapter 6.

  1191. Verse 1,

  1192. he starts

  1193. by saying,

  1194. what shall

  1195. we say

  1196. then?

  1197. Are we

  1198. to continue

  1199. in sin

  1200. that grace

  1201. may abound?

  1202. And his

  1203. answer,

  1204. by no

  1205. means.

  1206. But look

  1207. at verse

  1208. 17.

  1209. Romans

    Romans 6:17

  1210. chapter 6

  1211. verse 17.

  1212. But thanks

  1213. be to

  1214. God that

  1215. you were

  1216. once slaves

  1217. of sin,

  1218. have become

  1219. obedient from

  1220. the heart

  1221. to the

  1222. standard of

  1223. teaching to

  1224. which you

  1225. were committed.

  1226. Verse 18.

  1227. And having

  1228. been set

  1229. free from

  1230. sin,

  1231. you have

  1232. become

  1233. slaves of

  1234. righteousness.

  1235. Which means,

  1236. if you're a

  1237. slave of

  1238. something,

  1239. you're going

  1240. to do what

  1241. the slave

  1242. master says.

  1243. And if

  1244. you're a

  1245. slave to

  1246. righteousness,

  1247. then you're

  1248. going to

  1249. do

  1250. righteousness.

  1251. out of

  1252. being made

  1253. righteous,

  1254. we do

  1255. then

  1256. righteous

  1257. things.

  1258. Abraham

  1259. was

  1260. righteous

  1261. and he

  1262. obeyed

  1263. rightly,

  1264. which means

  1265. he,

  1266. in his

  1267. case,

  1268. was

  1269. circumcised.

  1270. Our fourth

  1271. point this

  1272. morning.

  1273. Justification

  1274. by faith

  1275. apart from

  1276. works

  1277. allows that

  1278. all people

  1279. can be

  1280. children

  1281. of Abraham.

  1282. allows that

  1283. all people

  1284. can be

  1285. children

  1286. of Abraham.

  1287. Turn back

  1288. to Romans

    Romans 4:11

  1289. chapter 4

  1290. verse 11

  1291. and 12.

  1292. He received

  1293. the sign of

  1294. circumcision as

  1295. a seal of

  1296. the righteousness

  1297. that he had

  1298. by faith

  1299. while he was

  1300. still circumcised.

  1301. The purpose

  1302. was to make

  1303. him the

  1304. father of

  1305. all who

  1306. believe without

  1307. being circumcised

  1308. so that the

  1309. righteousness

  1310. would be

  1311. counted to

  1312. them as

  1313. well.

  1314. And to

  1315. make him

  1316. the father

  1317. of the

  1318. circumcised

  1319. who are

  1320. not merely

  1321. circumcised

  1322. but who

  1323. also walk

  1324. in the

  1325. footsteps

  1326. of faith

  1327. that our

  1328. father Abraham

  1329. had before

  1330. he was

  1331. circumcised.

  1332. Now God

  1333. counting

  1334. righteousness

  1335. to Abraham

  1336. when he

  1337. did

  1338. before

  1339. allows

  1340. that all

  1341. types of

  1342. people,

  1343. no matter

  1344. their

  1345. ethnicity

  1346. or race,

  1347. their

  1348. religious

  1349. background

  1350. or their

  1351. non-religious

  1352. background,

  1353. black or

  1354. white,

  1355. Jew or

  1356. Gentile,

  1357. circumcised

  1358. or uncircumcised

  1359. can call

  1360. Abraham their

  1361. spiritual

  1362. father.

  1363. I started

  1364. to feel in the

  1365. Martin Luther

  1366. King speech

  1367. there for a

  1368. second.

  1369. We too can

  1370. walk as

  1371. Abraham walked.

  1372. We too can

  1373. be counted

  1374. as righteousness.

  1375. righteousness.

  1376. It also

  1377. means though

  1378. that God

  1379. will have

  1380. mercy on

  1381. who he

  1382. wants to

  1383. have

  1384. mercy on.

  1385. We cannot

  1386. and must

  1387. not put

  1388. limits on

  1389. who we

  1390. think God

  1391. should

  1392. or will

  1393. save.

  1394. That is not

  1395. our job.

  1396. Our job is

  1397. to proclaim

  1398. and boast

  1399. about Christ.

  1400. Not to

  1401. judge somebody

  1402. and say,

  1403. God,

  1404. you're not

  1405. going to

  1406. save them.

  1407. They're

  1408. long gone.

  1409. All people

  1410. can be

  1411. children of

  1412. God.

  1413. Any type

  1414. of person.

  1415. No matter

  1416. who.

  1417. So I

  1418. can look

  1419. at the

  1420. Muslim

  1421. on TV

  1422. and say,

  1423. who's

  1424. bombing

  1425. things and

  1426. say,

  1427. yes,

  1428. he can

  1429. be born

  1430. again.

  1431. He can

  1432. receive the

  1433. grace that

  1434. I have

  1435. been shown.

  1436. Because he

  1437. is no

  1438. worse than

  1439. I am.

  1440. That's what

  1441. justification

  1442. by faith

  1443. does.

  1444. It

  1445. shakes

  1446. up our

  1447. thinking.

  1448. Verse 11

  1449. says,

  1450. again,

  1451. Abraham

  1452. received the

  1453. sign of

  1454. circumcision

  1455. as a

  1456. seal of

  1457. the righteousness

  1458. that he

  1459. had by faith

  1460. while he

  1461. was still

  1462. circumcised.

  1463. Circumcision

  1464. was the

  1465. seal that

  1466. confirmed or

  1467. authenticated

  1468. being counted

  1469. righteous.

  1470. It reminded

  1471. the Jews

  1472. and God

  1473. of the

  1474. covenant

  1475. that was

  1476. made.

  1477. It's

  1478. what made

  1479. that

  1480. covenant

  1481. binding.

  1482. Now,

  1483. we too

  1484. have a

  1485. seal.

  1486. We have

  1487. the Holy

  1488. Spirit.

  1489. In

  1490. Christ,

  1491. we have

  1492. the Holy

  1493. Spirit.

  1494. We are

  1495. secure in

  1496. Christ with

  1497. the seal

  1498. of the

  1499. Holy

  1500. Spirit.

  1501. Authenticated,

  1502. confirmed by

  1503. the Holy

  1504. Spirit.

  1505. Now,

  1506. if any

  1507. person,

  1508. any people

  1509. group can be

  1510. counted as

  1511. righteousness,

  1512. the opposite

  1513. is true as

  1514. well.

  1515. Not everyone

  1516. who was

  1517. circumcised

  1518. was counted

  1519. as righteous.

  1520. Ishmael

  1521. was circumcised

  1522. but not part

  1523. of the

  1524. covenant.

  1525. For you

  1526. today,

  1527. what matters

  1528. is not what

  1529. you've done

  1530. or what

  1531. religious

  1532. guidelines

  1533. you follow.

  1534. What matters

  1535. is whether or

  1536. not you have

  1537. been counted

  1538. as righteous

  1539. as in

  1540. Christ.

  1541. to be

  1542. counted,

  1543. this word

  1544. counted,

  1545. talks of an

  1546. exchange or

  1547. a credit.

  1548. The only

  1549. way that

  1550. your bank

  1551. account can

  1552. be credited

  1553. is by putting

  1554. money in

  1555. it.

  1556. Credit that

  1557. account.

  1558. Either you

  1559. or the bank

  1560. had to have

  1561. the money

  1562. to then credit

  1563. your account.

  1564. With me so

  1565. far?

  1566. To credit

  1567. someone,

  1568. there must

  1569. be ownership.

  1570. God is

  1571. the owner

  1572. of righteousness.

  1573. He is

  1574. righteous and

  1575. He is the

  1576. source of

  1577. righteousness.

  1578. He has

  1579. given it to

  1580. those who

  1581. believe that

  1582. Jesus Christ

  1583. is Lord.

  1584. There is

  1585. nothing fancy

  1586. or difficult

  1587. about this.

  1588. It's clear

  1589. and it's

  1590. simple.

  1591. There are

  1592. three things

  1593. that you

  1594. have to do

  1595. in order to

  1596. believe.

  1597. Just three.

  1598. Three simple

  1599. things.

  1600. The first

  1601. thing is you

  1602. have to

  1603. admit and

  1604. realize that

  1605. you are a

  1606. sinner unable

  1607. to be

  1608. righteous apart

  1609. from the

  1610. work of

  1611. God.

  1612. Second

  1613. thing is that

  1614. you have to

  1615. believe that

  1616. Jesus lived a

  1617. sinless,

  1618. perfect life for

  1619. sinners like

  1620. you and me.

  1621. He died for

  1622. your sin and

  1623. rose from the

  1624. grave to free

  1625. you from the

  1626. bondage of

  1627. sin.

  1628. So believe

  1629. that you are

  1630. a sinner.

  1631. believe what

  1632. Jesus did.

  1633. And the

  1634. third thing,

  1635. Jesus can and

  1636. will give you

  1637. a new life if

  1638. you repent of

  1639. your sins and

  1640. believe that he

  1641. is Lord.

  1642. So you

  1643. repent and

  1644. you believe.

  1645. God, I

  1646. will give you

  1647. a new life if

  1648. Now we don't say

  1649. that every

  1650. Sunday morning.

  1651. But in a

  1652. topic like

  1653. justification by

  1654. faith apart

  1655. from words,

  1656. we can get the

  1657. doctrine, we can

  1658. get the

  1659. knowledge, but we

  1660. have to have our

  1661. lives changed.

  1662. Otherwise it

  1663. doesn't mean

  1664. anything.

  1665. So I

  1666. throw those

  1667. three things

  1668. out at you

  1669. and I

  1670. plead with

  1671. you, if

  1672. you do not

  1673. know Christ,

  1674. believe in

  1675. him this

  1676. morning.

  1677. I hope and

  1678. I pray that I

  1679. have shown you

  1680. clearly how it

  1681. works.

  1682. Now I know

  1683. there's guys in

  1684. this room,

  1685. there are guys

  1686. in this room

  1687. that would love

  1688. to have a

  1689. conversation with

  1690. you.

  1691. Just look

  1692. around, there's

  1693. tons of guys.

  1694. There's John,

  1695. there's Wes,

  1696. there's Josh,

  1697. there's Nathan,

  1698. there's me,

  1699. there's Daryl,

  1700. there's Stan,

  1701. there's tons of

  1702. guys in here that

  1703. if you do not

  1704. know Christ,

  1705. that they would

  1706. love to talk to

  1707. you about it.

  1708. Don't wait.

  1709. Don't hesitate.

  1710. Let's pray

  1711. together.

  1712. Let's pray.
