  1. We're in Romans chapter 4, if you guys want to flip there.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  2. This is your first time here.

  3. We are studying and going through the book of Romans.

  4. !

  5. Romans chapter 4, our text this morning is verse 18 through 25.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  6. Read along with me.

  7. In hope he believed against hope, he being Abraham,

  8. that he should become the father of many nations,

  9. as he had been told, so shall your offspring be.

  10. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body,

  11. which was as good as dead since he was about 100 years old,

  12. or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb.

  13. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God,

  14. but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,

  15. fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

  16. That is why his faith was counted to him as righteousness.

  17. But the words it was counted to him were not written for his sake alone,

  18. but for ours also.

  19. It will be counted to us who believe in him,

  20. who raised from the dead, Jesus our Lord,

  21. who was delivered up for our trespasses,

  22. and raised for our justification.

  23. When I was a kid, we used to get a magazine called Ranger Rick.

  24. I don't know if you guys have ever seen this.

  25. In it were stories about animals, nature, weather,

  26. you know, stuff that kids thought were cool before video games came out.

  27. My favorite part of the magazine was found on the last couple pages.

  28. One of the, it always had a picture drawn,

  29. tree or garden or whatever, house.

  30. And in that picture drawn were hidden things.

  31. And your job was to find those hidden objects,

  32. circle them, mark them off the list,

  33. and then go into the back of the magazine

  34. and check and see if you got it right.

  35. The other favorite of mine was the snapshot pictures.

  36. They would take a picture of something really, really, really close up,

  37. like a beehive or a rug or a cracker,

  38. and your job was to guess what that object was.

  39. Now, the problem was that that object was not in the environment

  40. that it normally is in.

  41. So you had no other clue except what you were seeing,

  42. what that object was.

  43. And you could go to the back of the book and cheat if you wanted to.

  44. You could try to figure it out.

  45. And even as a kid, I would know exactly what the answer was

  46. and I still didn't see it.

  47. I couldn't get it.

  48. The problem was that you're given such a small look at this object

  49. that you couldn't put it into the environment on purpose, of course.

  50. It's a problem to solve as a kid.

  51. And you would need help.

  52. I'm afraid that our theology has the same problem.

  53. Our view of God is so limited by what we can see

  54. or sometimes even feel.

  55. That's another whole subject we talk about later.

  56. Our view is so limited because we don't learn about God.

  57. We don't spend time with God.

  58. We don't trust Him more.

  59. That we get these little snapshots.

  60. Little blown, zoomed in pictures.

  61. And so when a struggle comes, and it will,

  62. when we lose a job or lose a loved one or fail a class,

  63. whatever it is, we give up.

  64. And we try to solve the problem ourselves

  65. instead of trusting the one who is faithful,

  66. the one who we can put our hope in,

  67. who will never leave us or forsake us.

  68. We give up because all we see is this tiny picture

  69. that we can't make out what it is.

  70. We have this one characteristic of God.

  71. One thing that God, that we know about Him,

  72. and that's it.

  73. And the life of Abraham,

  74. specifically two events can show us this

  75. in the writings of Scripture,

  76. can give life to words this morning.

  77. Paul clearly in Romans chapter 2

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  78. is using the life of Abraham to make his argument.

  79. So quickly I'm going to kind of review

  80. the life of Abraham for us.

  81. Abraham was an idolatrous.

  82. We kind of got a review this morning.

  83. I didn't know Nathan was going to do that.

  84. So I'll just add to it.

  85. Abraham was an idolatrous pagan man

  86. who lived in the land of Ur of the Chaldeans.

  87. So pagan, idolatrous guy did not know God.

  88. And God picks Abraham,

  89. and at the time his name was Abram,

  90. and calls him out and says,

  91. pack up and go.

  92. Doesn't tell him where.

  93. And just like that,

  94. Abraham gets,

  95. Abram gets up and he goes.

  96. Abram, whose name means father of many,

  97. is what his name means,

  98. which is a good example of God's sovereignty

  99. and his providence,

  100. using things to work for his good.

  101. Abram's name meaning father of many.

  102. Abram was given a promise that God,

  103. from God,

  104. that he would be the father of many nations,

  105. all without having a child of his own.

  106. The constant reminder of his name,

  107. and the lack of not having a child,

  108. led Abram to follow his wife's advice,

  109. and take a child from,

  110. or with Hagar,

  111. who was Sarah's,

  112. his wife's servant.

  113. Doubt and despair crept in,

  114. and sin was the result.

  115. Well, I don't have a child,

  116. so I'm going to go this route.

  117. God hasn't come through,

  118. so I'm going to go this route.

  119. Because Abram at that moment

  120. did not have a kingdom view,

  121. did not have a big God view.

  122. He had a small God view.

  123. He didn't necessarily believe God.

  124. Time had gone.

  125. Years had passed.

  126. It took 40 years for the promise to be fulfilled.

  127. God made good on his promise to Abraham

  128. by giving him a son, Isaac.

  129. When, as Paul says in our text,

  130. Abraham was as good as dead,

  131. since he was about a hundred years old.

  132. Or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb.

  133. See, God was preparing Abraham.

  134. Abraham.

  135. Preparing Abraham to,

  136. giving him this kingdom view,

  137. revealing himself to him.

  138. So that when,

  139. when the time came for Abraham

  140. to take Isaac up onto the mountain

  141. and sacrifice his only son,

  142. he did it because he knew

  143. that God was faithful.

  144. He knew

  145. that God would fulfill his promise.

  146. We read last week,

  147. Hebrews 11,

  148. about Abraham.

  149. It says,

  150. By faith Abraham,

  151. when he was tested,

  152. offered up Isaac.

  153. And he who had received the promises

  154. was in the act of offering up his only son,

  155. of whom it was said,

  156. Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  157. So,

  158. the very son

  159. that the promise was going to come through,

  160. Abraham believed God,

  161. had a big picture of God,

  162. and offered up Isaac

  163. as a sacrifice.

  164. He considered

  165. that God was able

  166. even to raise him from the dead,

  167. from which,

  168. figuratively speaking,

  169. he did receive him back.

  170. So God knew,

  171. or Abraham knew,

  172. who God was.

  173. God had worked in his life

  174. and revealed himself to Abraham

  175. so he could trust in the God

  176. who is faithful.

  177. Abraham was faithful.

  178. He was faithful because

  179. he had a big picture

  180. of who God is.

  181. Faith is not a step into the unknown.

  182. We joke around about

  183. the Indiana Jones Temple of Doom,

  184. have you guys seen it?

  185. Where Indiana Jones has to step out

  186. into the void

  187. and picture is that's faith.

  188. Well, that's not faith.

  189. Faith isn't just jumping out

  190. into something we don't know.

  191. It is complete confidence

  192. in the God

  193. who issues the command or promise.

  194. Faith is not full understanding,

  195. but full trust.

  196. And Abraham trusted God.

  197. Didn't understand why

  198. he was going to sacrifice his son,

  199. but he trusted God.

  200. See, some of us in this room

  201. will pray,

  202. God, increase or strengthen my faith.

  203. My question to you is,

  204. why are you praying that?

  205. Is it for more understanding,

  206. which isn't faith at all,

  207. it's just knowledge?

  208. More understanding of life,

  209. or is it the ability to trust him more

  210. because he is Lord?

  211. That is faith.

  212. Abraham is celebrated because of his faith,

  213. and that faith came from God,

  214. and God revealing himself to Abraham

  215. through his 40 years of waiting.

  216. This morning,

  217. there's two points.

  218. Next week,

  219. there'll be two points

  220. from this same text.

  221. Your view of God

  222. determines how you live.

  223. Your view of God,

  224. big view,

  225. little view,

  226. your view of God

  227. determines how you live,

  228. and it determines what you believe.

  229. Two simple points this morning.

  230. So are you looking at a small,

  231. tiny picture,

  232. a zoomed-in picture

  233. of who God is?

  234. Or are you looking at a much bigger,

  235. broader picture

  236. that you can take comfort in

  237. and find joy in?

  238. That's the question this morning.

  239. As I studied this week

  240. and as I prepared,

  241. it became more and more clear to me

  242. that there's a lot of information

  243. that I think is good to share with you.

  244. So this text,

  245. we'll cover again next week

  246. with two more points.

  247. So let's dig in.

  248. Your view of God

  249. determines how you live.

  250. Your view of God

  251. determines how you live.

  252. So your actions are determined

  253. by your view of God.

  254. This is found in verse 18 and 19.

  255. It says,

  256. In hope he, Abraham,

  257. believed against hope

  258. that he should become

  259. the father of many nations.

  260. As he had been told,

  261. so shall your offspring be.

  262. He did not weaken in faith

  263. when he considered his own body,

  264. which was as good as dead,

  265. since he was about 100 years old,

  266. or when he considered

  267. the barrenness of Sarah's womb.

  268. In hope he believed against hope.

  269. The New American Standard says,

  270. In hope against hope he believed.

  271. The New King James Version says,

  272. Who against hope believed in hope.

  273. Paul in this statement

  274. puts hope against hope.

  275. What in the world does this mean?

  276. It's very poetic.

  277. It sounds really good,

  278. but what is he trying to say?

  279. In verse 17,

  280. he's just finished saying

  281. that Abraham believed in God

  282. who gives life to dead

  283. and calls into existence

  284. the things that do not exist.

  285. Okay?

  286. So that's kind of where

  287. we're coming from.

  288. And now Paul wages hope

  289. against hope.

  290. What we have here

  291. is two different types of hope.

  292. Okay?

  293. A better way to say that

  294. is that the object

  295. of the hope changes.

  296. Okay?

  297. So follow me.

  298. In our text from the ESV,

  299. it says,

  300. In hope,

  301. he believed against hope.

  302. Well, this first hope,

  303. in hope,

  304. is God's hope.

  305. It's hope that is in God alone.

  306. This hope never changes.

  307. It is constant.

  308. And it works

  309. outside of our understanding.

  310. So,

  311. we,

  312. as human beings,

  313. have a limited understanding

  314. of who God is.

  315. We have gravity.

  316. We have these rules

  317. that we have to follow.

  318. And God doesn't necessarily

  319. have to follow those same rules.

  320. We're all going to die.

  321. God does not work that way.

  322. It definitely doesn't work

  323. the way we want them to.

  324. Or the way that nature

  325. or reason says to.

  326. If we were to take

  327. a logical view,

  328. a logical view

  329. at the life of Abraham

  330. and some other stories

  331. through Scripture,

  332. nothing happened

  333. that was logical.

  334. Logic and reason says

  335. it is impossible

  336. for Abraham and Sarah

  337. to have a child.

  338. 99 years old

  339. and she was barren.

  340. Logic and reason says

  341. there's no hope

  342. for a son.

  343. So,

  344. what does Abraham

  345. and Sarah do?

  346. Sarah says,

  347. here's my servant Hagar.

  348. Have a child.

  349. His name will be Ishmael.

  350. The rest is history.

  351. Logic and reason says

  352. it is impossible

  353. to walk on dry ground

  354. in the middle

  355. of the Red Sea.

  356. I agree.

  357. But God doesn't work

  358. within our limited understanding.

  359. Logic and reason says

  360. that no one person

  361. can live a perfect,

  362. sinless life.

  363. But He did.

  364. Christ did.

  365. Logic and reason says

  366. that no one person

  367. dies for the sins

  368. of the world.

  369. logic and reason

  370. is right,

  371. but Christ did.

  372. Logic and reason

  373. says that

  374. no one can resurrect

  375. from being dead

  376. three days.

  377. But He did.

  378. All of this happened.

  379. Now,

  380. I am not preaching

  381. against logic and reason.

  382. It has its place.

  383. There are times

  384. and places

  385. for it.

  386. Just ask Paul.

  387. We are in the midst

  388. of a logical argument

  389. that Paul is laying out

  390. through Romans.

  391. What I am trying

  392. to communicate

  393. is that God

  394. does not always act

  395. within our logic

  396. and reason.

  397. See,

  398. here is the problem.

  399. You can use logic

  400. and reason

  401. to prove God,

  402. but you can also

  403. use logic and reason

  404. to disprove God.

  405. As far as I am concerned,

  406. those two

  407. counter each other

  408. and knock each other out.

  409. God does not work

  410. inside our little box

  411. of understanding.

  412. And in Abraham's case,

  413. in hope,

  414. he believed

  415. against hope.

  416. So this is against hope.

  417. This is man's hope.

  418. This is our hope.

  419. This is our understanding.

  420. Our minute minds

  421. can only grasp

  422. certain things

  423. with certain limitations.

  424. As I have already

  425. pointed out,

  426. from our standpoint,

  427. from our vantage point,

  428. there is no way

  429. that Abraham

  430. has a child.

  431. And yet,

  432. Matthew 19,

  433. it says,

  434. with man,

  435. this is impossible.

  436. Speaking of the camel

  437. going through the eye

  438. of the needle.

  439. With man,

  440. this is impossible.

  441. With God,

  442. all things are possible.

  443. And right before that,

  444. Jesus is talking about

  445. the rich man

  446. entering heaven.

  447. All things are possible.

  448. The question is,

  449. do you have hope

  450. that is counter-cultural?

  451. Do you have hope

  452. that is the antithesis

  453. to logic and reason?

  454. Or is your hope

  455. still limited

  456. by your

  457. little box?

  458. because when

  459. logic and reason

  460. no longer

  461. exists

  462. or solves

  463. your problem

  464. or makes a solution,

  465. what do you have left?

  466. What do you have left

  467. when logic and reason

  468. are gone?

  469. Do you have faith

  470. to hope against hope

  471. or does

  472. God no longer

  473. exist to you?

  474. And you can probably

  475. think of people

  476. who have

  477. left the church

  478. or stopped

  479. attending

  480. or stopped

  481. being a Christian

  482. or whatever

  483. the case may be

  484. because

  485. logic and reason

  486. ended.

  487. God told

  488. Abraham

  489. he would be

  490. the father

  491. of many nations.

  492. It took

  493. 40 years

  494. from the first

  495. promise.

  496. And in God's

  497. perfect timing,

  498. 40 years,

  499. Abraham

  500. hoped

  501. against hope.

  502. See what Paul

  503. does here

  504. is he measures

  505. God's given

  506. hope,

  507. he measures

  508. God's hope

  509. with man's

  510. hope.

  511. And if you're

  512. going to measure

  513. the two,

  514. God's hope

  515. is going to win

  516. every time

  517. because with

  518. God,

  519. all things

  520. are possible.

  521. Don't

  522. limit your

  523. view of

  524. God

  525. by putting

  526. Him in

  527. your little

  528. box of

  529. understanding

  530. that you

  531. open up

  532. once a

  533. week

  534. when you

  535. attend

  536. church

  537. or when

  538. you hang

  539. out with

  540. your

  541. friends

  542. who

  543. are

  544. nice

  545. and

  546. good

  547. and

  548. Christians.

  549. Don't do

  550. it.

  551. God is

  552. much

  553. bigger

  554. and

  555. greater

  556. than

  557. that.

  558. Reason

  559. and logic

  560. are good,

  561. but God

  562. created us

  563. and gave

  564. us brains

  565. to use

  566. it,

  567. but faith

  568. is more

  569. than

  570. arguments

  571. and

  572. statistics.

  573. Faith

  574. is confidence

  575. in the

  576. Creator

  577. who,

  578. as we've

  579. seen,

  580. defied

  581. death

  582. and

  583. defeated

  584. sin

  585. against

  586. all

  587. logic

  588. through

  589. Jesus

  590. Christ.

  591. So look

  592. at verse

  593. 19.

  594. He did

  595. not weaken

  596. in faith

  597. when he

  598. considered

  599. his own

  600. body,

  601. which was

  602. as good

  603. as dead,

  604. since he

  605. was about

  606. a hundred

  607. years old

  608. or when

  609. he

  610. considered

  611. the

  612. barrenness

  613. of

  614. Sarah's

  615. womb.

  616. If you're

  617. like me,

  618. and

  619. hopefully

  620. you're not,

  621. but if

  622. you are

  623. like me,

  624. you probably

  625. chuckled a little

  626. the first time

  627. you read

  628. this.

  629. I kind

  630. of

  631. snickered

  632. and chuckled

  633. a little

  634. bit.

  635. Paul's a

  636. funny guy.

  637. Abraham

  638. was nearly

  639. dead.

  640. That's

  641. pretty funny.

  642. See,

  643. in our

  644. time,

  645. that's

  646. a joke.

  647. That's

  648. an insult,

  649. something.

  650. And when

  651. we read

  652. scripture,

  653. we tend

  654. to read

  655. in and

  656. kind of

  657. put our

  658. emotions

  659. and our

  660. views with

  661. the text,

  662. our feelings

  663. and our

  664. perspective.

  665. But in

  666. this case,

  667. Paul is

  668. not insulting

  669. Abraham.

  670. He's not

  671. making a

  672. joke about

  673. Abraham.

  674. He's using

  675. Abraham's

  676. life to

  677. make a

  678. point.

  679. Abraham's

  680. life to

  681. Abraham's

  682. life to

  683. be

  684. away.

  685. He's

  686. way past

  687. having

  688. kids.

  689. And Sarah

  690. was barren.

  691. Or in

  692. the Greek,

  693. her womb

  694. was dead.

  695. Yet,

  696. he did not

  697. weaken in

  698. faith.

  699. Abraham's

  700. faith was

  701. rooted in

  702. the truth

  703. of God,

  704. and he

  705. had a

  706. large view,

  707. a big

  708. view of

  709. God.

  710. and his

  711. life showed

  712. it.

  713. That's why

  714. he's in

  715. Hebrews 11,

  716. the faith

  717. hall of fame,

  718. if that's

  719. what you

  720. want to

  721. call it.

  722. He didn't

  723. weaken in

  724. faith because

  725. what verse

  726. 17 says,

  727. look at

  728. it,

  729. says of

  730. the God

  731. in whom

  732. he believed,

  733. who gives

  734. life to

  735. the dead,

  736. the Greek

  737. says that

  738. Sarah's

  739. womb was

  740. dead,

  741. and calls

  742. into existence

  743. the things

  744. that do

  745. not exist.

  746. Isaac

  747. did not

  748. exist.

  749. Abraham

  750. believed

  751. this God.

  752. And both

  753. Abraham

  754. witnessed

  755. firsthand

  756. and both

  757. God used

  758. to strengthen

  759. Abraham

  760. and not

  761. weaken his

  762. faith.

  763. So if we

  764. have a

  765. big God

  766. view,

  767. if we

  768. have a

  769. perspective

  770. of God

  771. and try

  772. not to

  773. limit God

  774. and say,

  775. okay,

  776. God,

  777. you're

  778. greater than

  779. this,

  780. you're

  781. greater than

  782. what I

  783. can see,

  784. we will

  785. live

  786. different

  787. lives.

  788. We will

  789. not be

  790. weak,

  791. but we

  792. will be

  793. strong in

  794. our

  795. faith.

  796. God's

  797. love

  798. love

  799. love

  800. and

  801. love

  802. love

  803. !

  804. God's

  805. need

  806. love

  807. and

  808. love

  809. and

  810. love

  811. and

  812. love

  813. !

  814. God's

  815. view of

  816. view of

  817. view of

  818. view of

  819. Our actions more than likely are going to be God-honoring and God-pleasing and Christ-exalting,

  820. no matter the situation, no matter the suffering, no matter what we are dealing with.

  821. So question, do you think our brothers in India or Iran or China or North Korea,

  822. being beaten for proclaiming Christ, have a big God-view or a small God-view?

  823. See, the American church is filled with small God-view Christians.

  824. And I'll be honest with you, and I know Nathan will be honest with you,

  825. we refuse to be one and refuse to teach you to be one.

  826. We serve a big God, King of kings, Lord of lords, who is worthy of all praise.

  827. The rocks cry out to Him for crying out loud.

  828. He has given us His Word, and through it, our story after story of God doing unreal, unbelievable things.

  829. And let's be honest, things that are not logical.

  830. So let's pray in your life, and in my life, and here at Christ Family Church,

  831. that God would do something illogical.

  832. Something outside of our understanding for His glory and our good.

  833. Hear me clearly.

  834. It's not about what God can do for you.

  835. Let's not pray that.

  836. It's not about what God can do for you, what He can provide for you.

  837. It is about what He has already done, and what you do in light of that.

  838. And all that, that comes from a big God view.

  839. That comes from seeing God, seeing the big picture, learning about Him, reading His Word,

  840. loving, spending time with Him.

  841. So not only does your view of God determine how you live, but it also determines what you believe.

  842. Verse 20 and 21 says,

  843. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God.

  844. But he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,

  845. fully convinced that God was able to do what He had promised.

  846. Now, Abraham, from a world's perspective, had every reason to doubt God.

  847. Every reason to waver in his faith and in his belief.

  848. But he didn't.

  849. Because Abraham had a big God view, and the result was his belief in God.

  850. Specifically, his faith was strengthened.

  851. We just read that in our text.

  852. Our view of God determines what we believe.

  853. It's like the thermostat of our beliefs.

  854. Thermostat controls the air temperature in a room.

  855. It doesn't take the temperature.

  856. It controls the temperature.

  857. Likewise, our view of God controls what we actually believe about God.

  858. So if you have a small view of God, if you think that God is limited, follow me here.

  859. Then your beliefs about Scripture, your beliefs about Jesus, your beliefs about sin are affected,

  860. and a lot of times end up unbiblical.

  861. Back to the text.

  862. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God.

  863. Now, we can rejoice in this.

  864. Abraham was human.

  865. He wasn't superhuman.

  866. He wasn't this incredible, faithful guy.

  867. He was faithful because God made him faithful.

  868. Which means that Abraham being human, like you and like me, there were times of doubt in his life.

  869. There were times of anxiousness.

  870. Hagar is a good example.

  871. But none of that, none of those emotions or feelings, it says, made him waver.

  872. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God.

  873. Abraham secured himself to who God is.

  874. He gave in to sin.

  875. That inner struggle, that battle that wages on in all of us, was overcome by the promise of God.

  876. Abraham's view of a big God.

  877. Now, this inner struggle, it says, no distrust made him waver.

  878. Remember, the Greek word means to be divided in one's own mind.

  879. To be divided.

  880. Abraham was not divided.

  881. There was a conversation inside his head.

  882. I'm sure, if he's human, there had to be.

  883. Do we do this?

  884. Do we not?

  885. Do we do this?

  886. Do we not?

  887. But he never wavered.

  888. He never turned from the promise of God.

  889. With a small view of God, with a little picture of who God is, there would be wavering and a divided mind.

  890. Because there's no foundation.

  891. There's no truth.

  892. To talk you off the ledge of despair and hopelessness.

  893. There was no wavering.

  894. It says, instead, he grew strong in his faith.

  895. This grew strong is like a muscle grows stronger with strain and with weight, constantly working those muscles.

  896. Faith is strengthened by those strains and struggles within and from without.

  897. So, you go through a hard time and God gives you a promise and you trust him, your faith is strengthened.

  898. You don't trust him, but God works that out.

  899. Your faith is strengthened.

  900. Abraham's faith was strengthened through his life.

  901. Now, if question number two of the Logos questions is, why did God make you?

  902. It's from the Westminster Confession of Faith.

  903. And the answer is to glorify God and enjoy him forever.

  904. While we were created, God made us to glorify him and enjoy him forever.

  905. If that's the reason God made us, then we should look around and see how we can glorify God.

  906. How can we bring God honor and glory?

  907. If that's what we were created to do.

  908. Well, in our text, we have an example of that.

  909. Look at it.

  910. Verse 20.

  911. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God.

  912. But he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God.

  913. Finish it out.

  914. Fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

  915. Abraham glorified God because of who he was, God, and what he was going to do.

  916. God.

  917. Verse 21.

  918. He was fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

  919. Can you say that about your life?

  920. Can you say that you're fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised?

  921. I hope you can.

  922. This verse, verse 21, is the epitome of having a big view of God.

  923. This epitomizes what it means to believe in God.

  924. Abraham was fully convinced.

  925. No room for anything else.

  926. He was fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

  927. In other words, God does what he says he's going to do.

  928. God has the power.

  929. The inner struggle, the battle that wages on in all of us was overcome by the promise of God.

  930. God does what he promises.

  931. How could he do less and still be God?

  932. Think about that.

  933. How could God do less and still be God?

  934. This verse 21, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised,

  935. is the root of what our view should be of God.

  936. Fully convinced.

  937. It doesn't matter.

  938. It doesn't matter what it looks like in the end.

  939. God is going to fulfill his promises.

  940. Have you guys read Revelation?

  941. There's a lot of illogical things in that book.

  942. It doesn't matter.

  943. God is going to fulfill what he says he's going to fulfill.

  944. He's going to do what he says he's going to do.

  945. We should be fully convinced that what we read in Scripture is true.

  946. That what he says will happen.

  947. We should never ask the question, will God?

  948. If it says he will, he will.

  949. But we do ask that when we choose logic and reason over what Scripture says.

  950. When we choose and say there's no way that the earth was created in so and so six days.

  951. There's no way.

  952. Illogical.

  953. Scripture says that we have to believe it.

  954. Will Jesus come back for his bride, the church?

  955. Yes.

  956. Will Jesus destroy the enemy?

  957. Yes.

  958. Will our bodies be perfected?

  959. Yes.

  960. Will sin be destroyed?

  961. Yes.

  962. Will God keep his promises?

  963. Yes.

  964. Is hell a real place?

  965. Yes.

  966. Will people who do not know Jesus be sent to hell?

  967. Yes.

  968. Is heaven a real place?

  969. Yes.

  970. All are promises, spoken words of God from his word.

  971. How about a personal side?

  972. Will God hear my prayers?

  973. Yes.

  974. If you're a child of God, he will hear your prayers.

  975. Will God answer my prayers?

  976. Yes.

  977. If you pray in his will.

  978. Does God judge me for my sin?

  979. No.

  980. If you're a believer, Christ has already been judged for your sin.

  981. Am I accepted by the Father?

  982. Yes.

  983. You have been adopted because of Christ.

  984. Does God love some people more than me?

  985. No.

  986. Can God love me any less?

  987. No.

  988. Can God love me any more?

  989. Absolutely not.

  990. Absolutely not.

  991. Can we believe the entire Bible?

  992. Yes.

  993. We must.

  994. We must have a big view of God.

  995. Not so that we can do things better or have nicer things or be a better speaker or be more popular.

  996. But so we can bring the most glory to God.

  997. So that our faith can be strengthened like Abraham.

  998. And so our actions proclaim the goodness of God instead of our actions proclaiming our unbelief and insecurities.

  999. Jesus Christ lived an illogical life.

1000. How can a man be 100% human and 100% God?

  1001. The math doesn't work.

  1002. Illogical.

  1003. But he was.

1004. How can he live a perfect, sinless life?

  1005. Seems impossible to me.

  1006. But he did.

1007. Why would he die for the sins of a people who crucified him?

  1008. I don't know.

  1009. I wouldn't.

  1010. But he did.

1011. How does his death and resurrection affect you?

  1012. Illogical.

1013. Because without Christ, everything is logical.

1014. Without Christ, you're a sinner and you deserve hell and that's where you're going.

1015. You're a sinner created, born into it.

  1016. It's logical.

1017. You can do nothing that is God honoring without Christ.

  1018. Logical.

1019. You are guilty for the sin that you commit, that you live and breathe.

  1020. Logical.

1021. Without Christ, there is no hope.

  1022. Logical.

  1023. But.

1024. While you were dead in sin, Christ died for you.

  1025. Which means.

1026. He took on the sin of you and me and the world.

1027. The wrath and punishment that we deserve was all put on him.

  1028. Illogical.

1029. He died a gruesome death.

1030. Three days later, rose from the grave.

  1031. Illogical.

  1032. This act.

1033. Being resurrected, defeated death and sin.

  1034. Which means.

1035. Because of Christ, we have a living hope.

1036. That we can live with him forever.

1037. We can cling to a promise.

  1038. To come.

  1039. Next week.

  1040. Next year.

  1041. Forty years from now.

  1042. It does not matter.

  1043. Because he is faithful.

1044. And we can have complete confidence.

  1045. Fully convinced.

1046. If you do not know Christ, you must repent.

1047. And believe in Jesus Christ.

  1048. Not reasonable.

  1049. No reason.

  1050. Not logical.

  1051. But in the illogical.

1052. God is most glorified in the illogical.

1053. Because only he can do it.

1054. Only he can do the illogical.

  1055. Pray with me.

1056. Father, I thank you for your word.

  1057. God.

1058. I pray that you are pleased.

  1059. Plead with you that.

  1060. That hearts.

1061. Were touched by your spirit.

1062. That you used the word spoken this morning.

1063. And thank you, God, that you don't work in my limited understanding of you.

1064. That you are so much greater.

  1065. So much bigger.

1066. So much more than what I can imagine up.

  1067. Create in my mind.

  1068. God.

1069. I thank you, God, that you had the foresight to create what you've created.

  1070. This earth.

  1071. And this land.

1072. And just everything that we see has been created by you.

1073. God, we thank you for it.

1074. I thank you for Christ.

1075. That you had a plan A for mankind.

1076. That you were willing to sacrifice a life for many.

1077. I thank you that life sacrificed was also raised from the dead so that we can have life.

1078. God, I pray that Christ is exalted by not just our listening here.

1079. Not just your word being preached.

1080. But our actions leaving this place.

1081. And God, as we get ready to worship and celebrate what Christ has done by partaking of the Lord's Supper.

1082. I pray that you're honored by our hearts and our intentions.

1083. And God, as we move from that to worshiping in song.

1084. I pray that we worship with pure hearts.

  1085. Worship in truth.

1086. Celebrate what you have done for your people.

  1087. Your grace overwhelms me.

1088. Your mercy blows me away.

1089. And you show it day after day after day.

1090. To you be glory and honor.

  1091. In Jesus' name.

  1092. Amen.
