  1. Romans chapter 5 is where we are this morning.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  2. Last week we did verse 1 and we're going to read verse 1 through verse 5.

  3. ! Romans chapter 5, verse 1 says,

    Romans 5:1

  4. ! Therefore,

  5. since we have been justified by faith,

  6. we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  7. Through Him we have also obtained access by faith

  8. into this grace in which we stand.

  9. And we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

  10. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings,

  11. knowing that suffering produces endurance,

  12. and endurance produces character,

  13. and character produces hope,

  14. and hope does not put us to shame,

  15. because God's love has been poured into our hearts

  16. through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

  17. Let's pray together.

  18. Father, we know it is a privilege

  19. and a great opportunity to meet together

  20. with our brothers and sisters,

  21. with your saints.

  22. Lord, we know that you have called us all here for a purpose,

  23. for a reason.

  24. We know that your word does not return void.

  25. So God, as we read your word,

  26. and as your word is preached,

  27. I pray, God, that your word would not return void.

  28. That hardened hearts would be softened.

  29. That soft hearts would be more receptive

  30. and more obedient to what you have told us

  31. and taught us.

  32. That those in here that don't even know you

  33. would come to know you

  34. because they have heard from you this morning.

  35. That you have called them to yourself this morning.

  36. I pray, God, that the words that are spoken

  37. would be your words.

  38. That you would be exalted on high.

  39. That people would leave here

  40. not feeling good,

  41. not having this emotional experience,

  42. but being one mind, one spirit,

  43. praising you as we leave this place,

  44. desiring to exalt you alone.

  45. Thank you for this opportunity and this time.

  46. I pray that you are pleased and you are honored.

  47. In Jesus' name, amen.

  48. Assurance is a word that isn't used

  49. as much as it is practiced or worked towards.

  50. For example, college students.

  51. You guys go to college to get a degree

  52. so that you're assured a good, well-paying job.

  53. Parents raise kids a certain way

  54. to assure that their children

  55. turn out to be good, obedient, and polite students,

  56. employees, and citizens.

  57. Some parents bring their children

  58. or take their children to church

  59. to assure that their kids

  60. will grow up and become Christians.

  61. Some of you may have been those kids.

  62. People live a healthy life

  63. in order that they can be assured

  64. to live a long time.

  65. The truth is that all of that

  66. is circumstantial at best.

  67. When we really think about it,

  68. there's not a lot of things

  69. that we can be assured of.

  70. The old saying,

  71. there are only two certainties in life,

  72. death and taxes,

  73. carries with it a little more weight

  74. because it's almost true.

  75. But, if you are a Christian,

  76. if you are a child of God,

  77. then there are several things

  78. that you can be assured of.

  79. Because as Romans 4, 21 says,

  80. we can be fully convinced

  81. that God is able to do

  82. what He promised.

  83. As Abraham was fully convinced

  84. that God was able to do

  85. what He had promised.

  86. Our text this morning

  87. is about assurance.

  88. Now, not assurance of salvation,

  89. like you're doubting your salvation,

  90. although that comes into play,

  91. but more about our salvation

  92. being secured forever in Christ.

  93. Assurance that we have

  94. in and from justification by faith.

  95. In fact, Romans 5 and Romans 8

  96. are about this very topic of assurance.

  97. The assurance we have in Christ

  98. and the things that we are assured of

  99. because of Christ.

  100. So, as a quick review of Romans

  101. up to this point,

  102. chapter 1 is all about

  103. the Gentiles being sinners.

  104. Us, non-Jewish people being sinners

  105. without hope and guilty

  106. even though we don't have the law.

  107. Chapter 2 is about the Jewish people

  108. being guilty because they do have the law.

  109. They are held accountable to that law.

  110. Chapter 3 is all about us,

  111. everyone guilty.

  112. All of us, sinners,

  113. cursed, deserving of death.

  114. Chapter 4,

  115. justification by faith to any

  116. for all who are made right before God.

  117. And chapter 5,

  118. assurance of being justified by faith.

  119. So, this is where we settle.

  120. This is where we begin

  121. our study on assurance.

  122. So, because we have been justified,

  123. because Christ has died,

  124. we've been justified by faith,

  125. we have five things from our text

  126. that we can be assured of.

  127. One of them was our topic last week.

  128. We talked about peace.

  129. Peace with God.

  130. We can be assured

  131. that we stand at peace with God.

  132. No longer enemies.

  133. No longer at war with God

  134. because of Christ.

  135. This morning, we have four more.

  136. We are assured access to God.

  137. We are assured a future glory.

  138. We are assured that suffering will come.

  139. And we are assured that God loves His children.

  140. So, our first point this morning.

  141. We are assured access to God.

  142. This is verse 2.

  143. It says,

  144. Through Him, being Christ, being Jesus,

  145. Thanks, Nick.

  146. We have also obtained access by faith

  147. into this grace in which we stand.

  148. So, not only do we have peace with God,

  149. verse 1,

  150. but we are also given access to God

  151. through Jesus Christ.

  152. Access can also be translated introduction.

  153. Now, if I want a face-to-face

  154. with the Queen of England,

  155. those of you who don't know,

  156. I was born in England,

  157. so let's say I'm considering citizenship there.

  158. And I want to do as much research as I can

  159. and I want to meet the Queen

  160. and talk to her

  161. and see what she has to say

  162. about me being a citizen.

  163. There would be a long process

  164. for me to have to go through

  165. for me to be able to even have

  166. a face-to-face with her.

  167. On top of the process,

  168. I'd have to learn proper etiquette.

  169. Where to stand,

  170. where to bow,

  171. how to touch her,

  172. all these things.

  173. And then when the meeting time happens,

  174. when I get to face-to-face,

  175. of course,

  176. I would be escorted

  177. to the Queen of England

  178. and introduced by one of her trusted counsel.

  179. I would need someone

  180. to intercede for me

  181. and then I can be introduced.

  182. The same is true for us with God.

  183. Of course,

  184. on a totally different level.

  185. Because of Jesus Christ,

  186. we have been given access to God

  187. and been introduced by Jesus

  188. to the Creator of the universe.

  189. Now, this introduction

  190. isn't because God didn't know us.

  191. It's because we couldn't

  192. have access any other way.

  193. Like the peace we have been given with God,

  194. we needed to have peace with God

  195. because we were enemies at war with Him.

  196. Being sinful creatures

  197. has thwarted any thought

  198. that you or I could have fellowship with Him.

  199. But Christ has given us that access.

  200. In verse 2,

  201. verse 1 says,

  202. we have peace with God

  203. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  204. Through Him,

  205. we have also obtained access by faith

  206. into this grace

  207. in which we stand.

  208. Another way to say this verse

  209. is through Him,

  210. we have been put

  211. in this gracious relationship with God.

  212. This gracious relationship.

  213. A relationship founded on grace.

  214. Where grace abounds.

  215. Grace gives us peace with God.

  216. Grace gives us access to God.

  217. Because of grace,

  218. we are no longer under the law.

  219. Because of grace,

  220. we have a Heavenly Father.

  221. Grace gives us hope

  222. of our future glory.

  223. Grace secures an inheritance.

  224. Grace empowers us

  225. to live fearless and victorious.

  226. Because of grace,

  227. we can glorify God

  228. with all of our lives.

  229. Because of grace,

  230. we can be image bearers of God

  231. as we were created to be.

  232. Because of grace,

  233. we have been made alive.

  234. And because of grace,

  235. we can rejoice in the valley

  236. and on the mountaintop.

  237. We stand in this grace.

  238. It is the umbrella

  239. that covers us

  240. from a storm

  241. that will not end.

  242. And we rejoice in the storm

  243. because grace upon grace

  244. is given through Jesus Christ.

  245. We have been given access to God

  246. through Jesus Christ.

  247. And if we could stand with Him

  248. in His presence,

  249. as if we could stand in His presence.

  250. In the Old Testament,

  251. throughout the Jewish traditions,

  252. access was given to one person.

  253. No one but the high priest

  254. one time a year.

  255. The way that Paul is describing

  256. our access

  257. throws the Jewish teaching

  258. out of the window.

  259. There's something better

  260. because of Christ.

  261. God is no longer

  262. a far-off object of worship.

  263. He's no longer this God

  264. that we cannot touch or see.

  265. He is our friend,

  266. our Father,

  267. and our Lord.

  268. And now we can just walk

  269. into the presence of God.

  270. Turn to Hebrews chapter 4.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  271. I want you to see this.

  272. If we can walk

  273. into the presence of God,

  274. if that's the case,

  275. then our prayer lives

  276. should be good.

  277. We should have fellowship with God

  278. like we do with our spouse.

  279. Like we do with our teammates.

  280. Or like we do with our brothers

  281. or sisters of fraternity or sororities.

  282. Or our bunkmates.

  283. We should have that fellowship

  284. with Him because

  285. we have been given access

  286. to Him through Christ.

  287. In Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  288. starting in verse 14,

  289. says,

  290. Since then we have

  291. a great high priest

  292. who has passed

  293. through the heavens,

  294. Jesus,

  295. the Son of God.

  296. Let us hold fast

  297. our confession.

  298. For we do not have

  299. a high priest

  300. who is unable to sympathize

  301. with our weaknesses,

  302. but one who in every respect

  303. has been tempted as we are,

  304. yet without sin.

  305. So because of Christ,

  306. the writer of Hebrews

  307. is setting us up

  308. for verse 16,

  309. Let us then with confidence

  310. draw near to the throne of grace

  311. that we may receive mercy

  312. and find grace to help

  313. in time of need.

  314. So,

  315. after reading that

  316. and knowing that we have access

  317. because of Christ

  318. to God,

  319. what's wrong with your prayer life?

  320. What's wrong with my prayer life?

  321. Why don't we pray

  322. with this kind of confidence?

  323. We have been assured

  324. of this kind of access.

  325. Let us go boldly before God

  326. with reverence

  327. and proclaim grace

  328. boldly to those around us.

  329. So not only are we assured access

  330. before God,

  331. but our second point

  332. is we are assured

  333. a future glory.

  334. This is the second part

  335. of verse 2 of chapter 5.

  336. It says,

  337. By faith into this grace

  338. in which we stand

  339. and we rejoice

  340. in hope

  341. of the glory of God.

  342. And we rejoice

  343. in hope

  344. of the glory of God.

  345. That is,

  346. that we have hope

  347. of the moment

  348. when we will be glorified

  349. as God is glorified.

  350. The word rejoice

  351. isn't just to be joyful

  352. or sing

  353. or anything like that.

  354. It can be translated

  355. as boast.

  356. So another way

  357. to say it is,

  358. is we are joyfully confident.

  359. So if we were to

  360. say this text again,

  361. we are joyfully confident

  362. in the hope

  363. of the glory of God.

  364. We have been assured

  365. that we will share

  366. in the glory of God.

  367. We will be made perfect.

  368. We will be made sinless.

  369. Without suffering.

  370. Without pain.

  371. Here is why

  372. this is a big deal.

  373. In Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3:23

  374. verse 23 says,

  375. For all have sinned

  376. and fall short

  377. of the glory of God.

  378. In other words,

  379. we have been made unable

  380. to achieve

  381. to the glory of God.

  382. We are unable

  383. without Christ.

  384. And now because of Christ,

  385. we are promised

  386. that we will share

  387. in God's glory.

  388. See, Jesus Christ

  389. has given us peace.

  390. We have peace with God.

  391. He's given us access to God

  392. and He's assured us

  393. that we will share

  394. in His glory.

  395. It's truly

  396. a one-sided relationship.

  397. God has done all the work.

  398. It is no wonder

  399. we have hope

  400. or are supposed

  401. to have hope

  402. in what's to come.

  403. Because He's done

  404. everything up to this point.

  405. John Stott

  406. defines Christian hope

  407. as this.

  408. He says,

  409. a Christian hope

  410. is a joyful

  411. and confident expectation

  412. which rests

  413. on the promise

  414. of God.

  415. A joyful

  416. and confident expectation

  417. which rests

  418. on the promise

  419. of God.

  420. God has done it.

  421. So if we have

  422. this hope then,

  423. if we have this hope

  424. of future glory

  425. of what's going

  426. to happen,

  427. how does that

  428. change your life

  429. or my life?

  430. How do we live

  431. differently because of that?

  432. See,

  433. if you're truly born again,

  434. if you are a Christian,

  435. then you will have

  436. a desire

  437. to please God,

  438. to do what

  439. will bring most

  440. pleasure to Him.

  441. So a follow-up question

  442. is,

  443. do you have

  444. that desire?

  445. Do you have

  446. the desire

  447. to please God?

  448. If you do,

  449. then whatever it takes

  450. to please Him,

  451. you're going to do.

  452. You will obey His Word.

  453. You will do

  454. as He says.

  455. Hebrews 4.12

  456. says,

  457. God's Word

  458. is living

  459. and active,

  460. sharper

  461. than a two-edged sword,

  462. piercing

  463. to the division

  464. of soul

  465. and of spirit,

  466. of joints

  467. and of marrow,

  468. and discerning

  469. the thoughts

  470. and intentions

  471. of the heart.

  472. If that's what

  473. the Word of God

  474. does,

  475. then just listening

  476. to it

  477. isn't an option.

  478. Just hearing it

  479. isn't an option.

  480. If we know

  481. that we have been

  482. assured

  483. of future glory,

  484. how does it

  485. change our life?

  486. It frees us

  487. to be bold.

  488. It frees us

  489. to proclaim

  490. Jesus Christ.

  491. It frees us

  492. to live

  493. for the Gospel

  494. and sometimes

  495. to die

  496. for the Gospel.

  497. It's why Paul

  498. says in Philippians,

  499. for to me,

  500. to live is Christ

  501. and to die

  502. is gain.

  503. To live

  504. isn't just

  505. happiness

  506. or pleasure.

  507. It is Christ

  508. because what He

  509. has done

  510. because He

  511. is far better

  512. far better

  513. than this world

  514. and because of

  515. what we have

  516. been assured

  517. of in Christ

  518. which is

  519. future glory.

  520. And to die

  521. isn't tragedy.

  522. It isn't the end

  523. but gain

  524. because of what

  525. Christ has been

  526. assured,

  527. what we have

  528. been assured

  529. in Christ,

  530. what He has

  531. assured for us.

  532. So not only

  533. are we assured

  534. access to God

  535. because of Christ

  536. and not only

  537. are we assured

  538. future glory,

  539. but guys

  540. were also

  541. assured

  542. that suffering

  543. will occur.

  544. Verse 3 and 4.

  545. Verse 3 and 4

  546. says,

  547. I'm going to read

  548. verse 2,

  549. Through Him

  550. we have also

  551. obtained access

  552. by faith

  553. into this grace

  554. in which we stand

  555. and we rejoice

  556. in the hope

  557. of the glory

  558. of God.

  559. Verse 3,

  560. More than that,

  561. we rejoice

  562. in our sufferings

  563. knowing that

  564. suffering produces

  565. endurance

  566. and endurance

  567. produces character

  568. and character

  569. produces hope.

  570. Anyone who

  571. preaches to you

  572. and says

  573. that if you

  574. know Jesus,

  575. that if you

  576. come down here

  577. and you pray a prayer

  578. and you know Jesus,

  579. if you accept Jesus,

  580. you will have a happy,

  581. fulfilling,

  582. best life now.

  583. They are lying to you

  584. and being unbiblical.

  585. In fact,

  586. the Bible

  587. promises suffering

  588. instead of happiness.

  589. Your life

  590. will be fulfilling,

  591. but it might not be

  592. with the BMW

  593. or the vacation home.

  594. And that's okay

  595. because Christ

  596. is far better.

  597. We can be assured

  598. that as a Christian,

  599. we will suffer.

  600. Let's step back

  601. for a minute.

  602. What Paul has done

  603. is he's looked out

  604. towards the horizon.

  605. He's looked out

  606. and he tells us

  607. what he sees.

  608. He sees peace

  609. with God.

  610. Children of God

  611. are going to have peace

  612. with God.

  613. He sees

  614. access with God.

  615. They now have

  616. access with God.

  617. He sees

  618. the future glory,

  619. the future perfection

  620. that is going

  621. to occur

  622. someday.

  623. He sees

  624. all these things

  625. that are going

  626. to happen

  627. for us.

  628. He sees

  629. in the future.

  630. And as his eyes

  631. come back,

  632. as his eyes

  633. kind of come back

  634. to where he is,

  635. he sees

  636. suffering.

  637. He sees

  638. hardship.

  639. He sees

  640. hate towards

  641. Christians.

  642. He sees

  643. hate towards

  644. Christ.

  645. He sees

  646. all the things

  647. that he himself

  648. has experienced

  649. and he himself

  650. has actually

  651. been a leader

  652. of.

  653. And he sees

  654. it and he knows

  655. that he must

  656. reassure the

  657. Christian to stand

  658. firm.

  659. Reassure the

  660. Christian to be

  661. bold and keep

  662. a lookout at the

  663. horizon of what's

  664. to come.

  665. I remember

  666. vividly when I was

  667. a kid,

  668. I'd been riding

  669. my bike for a

  670. few years.

  671. And in

  672. Chicago,

  673. we had,

  674. even the

  675. neighborhoods had

  676. the hard square

  677. curbs so you

  678. couldn't just ride

  679. your bike in it.

  680. You either had to

  681. jump it or go to

  682. where a sidewalk

  683. came, you know,

  684. where it's nice and

  685. smooth.

  686. I remember I'm

  687. riding my bike

  688. down the road

  689. and I'm wanting

  690. to get onto the

  691. sidewalk so I'm

  692. waiting for that

  693. moment where I can

  694. because I can't

  695. get up on the

  696. curb yet.

  697. And I'm staring

  698. at the corner.

  699. I'm staring at

  700. this curb going,

  701. I don't want to

  702. hit that.

  703. I don't want to

  704. hit that.

  705. I actually want

  706. to go there.

  707. And I don't

  708. want to hit that.

  709. I don't want to

  710. hit that.

  711. And what do I

  712. do?

  713. I hit it.

  714. I slam into it

  715. and fly off my

  716. bike.

  717. It's vivid to me

  718. because I do

  719. that driving as

  720. well.

  721. I don't hit

  722. curves, but there's

  723. things like in the

  724. road and I'll say,

  725. I don't want to

  726. hit that.

  727. I don't want to

  728. hit that.

  729. And I'll end up

  730. hitting it because

  731. I'm staring at it

  732. instead of staring

  733. down the road.

  734. You guys know

  735. what I'm talking

  736. about, don't you?

  737. You've all

  738. experienced that.

  739. So, lesson

  740. here, don't

  741. fall, don't be

  742. ahead of me, I

  743. guess.

  744. Don't be in the

  745. road when I'm

  746. driving because I'll

  747. stare at you and

  748. hit you.

  749. It's the same way

  750. though for us as

  751. Christians.

  752. If we look out and

  753. say, oh, this

  754. looks really hard.

  755. We're going to

  756. suffer.

  757. What are we going

  758. to do?

  759. We're going to be

  760. defeated in that

  761. suffering.

  762. We're not going to

  763. rejoice in that

  764. suffering.

  765. We're not going to

  766. be happy about it.

  767. We're not going to

  768. treasure it.

  769. As we'll see in a

  770. moment, the

  771. suffering leads to

  772. good things in our

  773. lives.

  774. We're going to be

  775. defeated by it.

  776. We're going to hit

  777. that curb and fly

  778. off our bike.

  779. See, as we look

  780. and see through the

  781. lens of the Word of

  782. God, we see that

  783. suffering is in our

  784. DNA as a Christian.

  785. It's going to

  786. happen.

  787. But we should be

  788. focusing on the

  789. horizon.

  790. And that's what

  791. Paul is trying to

  792. do for us in

  793. this text.

  794. The first part of

  795. verse 3 is

  796. fascinating to me

  797. because he says,

  798. so, end of verse

  799. 2 says, rejoice in

  800. hope of the glory of

  801. God.

  802. Rejoice in what's

  803. going to happen.

  804. And then verse 3

  805. says, more than

  806. that, we rejoice in

  807. our suffering.

  808. More than rejoicing in

  809. what's going to

  810. happen.

  811. More than rejoicing in

  812. God perfecting us.

  813. rejoice in our

  814. suffering.

  815. The same word is in

  816. verse 2.

  817. Rejoice.

  818. So be joyfully

  819. confident in your

  820. suffering.

  821. 2 Timothy 3,

    2 Timothy 3:12

  822. verse 12 says,

  823. it says, indeed,

  824. all who desire to

  825. live a godly life in

  826. Christ Jesus will be

  827. persecuted.

  828. persecuted.

  829. All who desire to

  830. live a godly life in

  831. Christ will be

  832. persecuted.

  833. To rejoice in

  834. suffering is not a

  835. new idea for Paul.

  836. This isn't something

  837. that he just made up.

  838. Jesus taught this

  839. very idea in the

  840. Sermon on the

  841. Mount in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  842. chapter 5.

  843. In chapter 5,

  844. verse 10, he

  845. says, blessed are

  846. those who are

  847. persecuted for

  848. righteousness sake,

  849. for theirs is the

  850. kingdom of heaven.

  851. Blessed are you

  852. when others revile

  853. you and persecute

  854. you and utter all

  855. kinds of evil

  856. against you falsely

  857. on my account.

  858. Rejoice and be

  859. glad, for your

  860. reward is great in

  861. heaven.

  862. For so they

  863. persecuted the

  864. prophets who were

  865. for you.

  866. He repeats it

  867. twice.

  868. Blessed are those

  869. who persecute you

  870. for righteousness

  871. sake.

  872. Blessed are you

  873. when others

  874. revile you and

  875. persecute you.

  876. There's importance

  877. here.

  878. There's weight

  879. here to what

  880. Jesus is saying.

  881. And now Paul is

  882. repeating the very

  883. same thing.

  884. Now this

  885. suffering in

  886. Romans isn't

  887. necessarily pain,

  888. although some

  889. people may suffer

  890. pain.

  891. It could be.

  892. The word refers

  893. to olives or

  894. grapes being in

  895. the press.

  896. Being squeezed

  897. for all its

  898. juices.

  899. That's the picture

  900. here of this

  901. word.

  902. So instead of

  903. just pain and

  904. sorrow, it's

  905. more of being

  906. under pressure

  907. from tribulation

  908. and from

  909. persecution.

  910. And then Paul

  911. tells us why we

  912. need to rejoice

  913. in our suffering.

  914. Why we need

  915. to be happy,

  916. to be joyful,

  917. to be joyfully

  918. confident.

  919. Because suffering

  920. produces endurance.

  921. endurance.

  922. Spiritual

  923. fortitude.

  924. Stick-to-itiveness.

  925. Like a marathon

  926. runner.

  927. So like in

  928. Hebrews 12,

  929. 1, let us run

  930. with endurance

  931. the race that

  932. is set before

  933. us.

  934. When you need

  935. to build strength

  936. or endurance

  937. in your body,

  938. you exercise,

  939. you practice,

  940. you do specific

  941. exercises for

  942. specific goals.

  943. If our goal

  944. is to live a

  945. life that is

  946. pleasing to

  947. God, then

  948. suffering helps

  949. in that goal.

  950. Because suffering

  951. produces endurance.

  952. A fruit of the

  953. suffering is

  954. endurance.

  955. Now, a question

  956. arose for me in

  957. my studies about

  958. this topic.

  959. It says in

  960. verse 3,

  961. More than that,

  962. we rejoice in

  963. our sufferings,

  964. knowing that

  965. suffering produces

  966. endurance.

  967. My question

  968. was, does it

  969. matter if I

  970. rejoice in my

  971. suffering or

  972. after my

  973. suffering?

  974. Is this

  975. preposition

  976. important?

  977. In.

  978. Is it

  979. important?

  980. Yes.

  981. It was a

  982. quick answer.

  983. It didn't take

  984. me very long

  985. to find the

  986. answer.

  987. Yes, it is

  988. important.

  989. Paul uses the

  990. preposition in,

  991. so it's in

  992. our suffering.

  993. So hindsight

  994. may be easier

  995. to rejoice in,

  996. but the call

  997. here is for

  998. us to rejoice

  999. in it while

  1000. going through

  1001. it.

  1002. And it

  1003. doesn't mean

  1004. this stoic

  1005. determination

  1006. to get

  1007. through this

  1008. rough patch

  1009. or to make

  1010. the best out

  1011. of a bad

  1012. situation.

  1013. It doesn't

  1014. mean that.

  1015. It means to

  1016. know that what

  1017. is occurring

  1018. is for my

  1019. good and

  1020. God's glory.

  1021. And if your

  1022. goal is to

  1023. live a life

  1024. that is

  1025. pleasing to

  1026. Him,

  1027. then you're

  1028. going to be

  1029. okay with

  1030. that.

  1031. You're going

  1032. to rejoice

  1033. in that

  1034. suffering.

  1035. It brings

  1036. God glory

  1037. when we do

  1038. this.

  1039. It pleases

  1040. Him.

  1041. But not

  1042. only does

  1043. suffering

  1044. produce

  1045. endurance,

  1046. but endurance

  1047. produces

  1048. character and

  1049. character

  1050. produces

  1051. hope.

  1052. Straight from

  1053. the text,

  1054. verse 4.

  1055. And endurance

  1056. produces

  1057. character and

  1058. character produces

  1059. hope.

  1060. So the fruit

  1061. of endurance

  1062. is character.

  1063. Character here

  1064. is a person

  1065. tested by

  1066. trial and

  1067. proven.

  1068. Tested and

  1069. proven.

  1070. So parents and

  1071. young people who

  1072. want to be

  1073. parents someday,

  1074. if you want

  1075. kids of

  1076. character,

  1077. lead them to

  1078. Christ and

  1079. let them go

  1080. wherever He

  1081. calls them.

  1082. For suffering

  1083. will come and

  1084. character will

  1085. be formed.

  1086. for us,

  1087. so in those

  1088. moments of

  1089. hopelessness and

  1090. defeat, in

  1091. those moments

  1092. of sorrow and

  1093. hardship, we

  1094. endure and are

  1095. found proven by

  1096. the trials to be

  1097. men and women

  1098. of character.

  1099. And character

  1100. produces hope.

  1101. It is the

  1102. experience of

  1103. coming out of a

  1104. time of testing

  1105. that produces

  1106. hope,

  1107. which, of

  1108. course, is

  1109. opposite of the

  1110. Disney movies,

  1111. is opposite of

  1112. what a lot of

  1113. us think or

  1114. have been taught.

  1115. See, because we

  1116. say we hope to

  1117. get out of the

  1118. situation, or

  1119. we hope to

  1120. win the lottery,

  1121. or we hope to

  1122. not get caught.

  1123. But true godly

  1124. hope is formed

  1125. in the testing

  1126. and hardship.

  1127. A quote from

  1128. one of the

  1129. commentaries I

  1130. read this week

  1131. says,

  1132. Our confidence

  1133. in God's

  1134. ability and

  1135. willingness to

  1136. bring us through

  1137. difficult times

  1138. leads to an

  1139. ever brighter

  1140. hope for that

  1141. which lies

  1142. beyond.

  1143. Hope is not

  1144. superficial optimism,

  1145. but the

  1146. confident assurance

  1147. of that which

  1148. will surely

  1149. come to pass.

  1150. This hope

  1151. comes through

  1152. suffering.

  1153. And because

  1154. hope comes

  1155. through suffering,

  1156. we can be

  1157. assured we

  1158. will suffer.

  1159. it's not a

  1160. topic we like

  1161. to talk about.

  1162. It's not a

  1163. topic we like

  1164. to celebrate,

  1165. but it's

  1166. biblical.

  1167. And if it's

  1168. biblical, then

  1169. it's going to

  1170. be taught here,

  1171. and we're

  1172. going to touch

  1173. on the

  1174. subject.

  1175. But here's

  1176. the good

  1177. news.

  1178. It's not

  1179. only are we

  1180. assured access

  1181. to God,

  1182. which is

  1183. great news.

  1184. Not only do

  1185. we have future

  1186. glory awaiting

  1187. us,

  1188. not only

  1189. are we

  1190. assured to

  1191. suffer,

  1192. but we're

  1193. assured that

  1194. God loves

  1195. His children.

  1196. Though we

  1197. may suffer

  1198. in it,

  1199. through it,

  1200. God loves

  1201. His children.

  1202. Verse 5

  1203. says,

  1204. And hope

  1205. does not put

  1206. us to shame

  1207. because God's

  1208. love has

  1209. been poured

  1210. into our

  1211. hearts through

  1212. the Holy

  1213. Spirit who

  1214. has been

  1215. given to

  1216. us.

  1217. Hope does

  1218. not put us

  1219. to shame.

  1220. It never

  1221. disappoints.

  1222. It does

  1223. not let

  1224. the believer

  1225. down.

  1226. So what

  1227. God says

  1228. will occur,

  1229. it will

  1230. happen,

  1231. and we

  1232. can rest

  1233. in our

  1234. hope of

  1235. it.

  1236. We are

  1237. quick to

  1238. speak of

  1239. God loving

  1240. His children

  1241. with reference

  1242. to Jesus

  1243. Christ on

  1244. the cross.

  1245. His death.

  1246. And a lot

  1247. of times it

  1248. ends there.

  1249. Jesus loves

  1250. sinners.

  1251. He died

  1252. for sinners.

  1253. And it

  1254. ends there.

  1255. But it's

  1256. just not

  1257. that.

  1258. It's also

  1259. not

  1260. an

  1261. intellectual

  1262. understanding

  1263. of God's

  1264. love.

  1265. Well,

  1266. I know

  1267. that God

  1268. loves me.

  1269. It's not

  1270. that.

  1271. It's also

  1272. an inner,

  1273. as John

  1274. Piper would

  1275. say,

  1276. down to the

  1277. bones,

  1278. feeling a

  1279. subjective

  1280. certainty that

  1281. God does

  1282. love us.

  1283. To the point

  1284. that Paul is

  1285. trying to make

  1286. clear in this

  1287. text is by

  1288. saying God's

  1289. love has been

  1290. poured into

  1291. our hearts

  1292. through the

  1293. Holy Spirit

  1294. has been

  1295. given to

  1296. us,

  1297. is that we

  1298. can be

  1299. certain,

  1300. is that we

  1301. can be

  1302. assured,

  1303. down to

  1304. our bones

  1305. with every

  1306. fiber of

  1307. our being,

  1308. that God

  1309. loves us.

  1310. We may not

  1311. understand it,

  1312. we may not

  1313. be able to

  1314. comprehend all

  1315. of it,

  1316. but we know

  1317. without a doubt

  1318. that God

  1319. loves us.

  1320. If you were a

  1321. child of God,

  1322. God loves you.

  1323. we can be

  1324. certain of it.

  1325. And it says

  1326. that love has

  1327. been poured

  1328. into our

  1329. hearts.

  1330. It's like an

  1331. extravagant

  1332. overflow,

  1333. an abundance

  1334. of love.

  1335. It doesn't say

  1336. that God

  1337. shares His

  1338. love,

  1339. He pours it

  1340. into our

  1341. hearts.

  1342. So as we

  1343. suffer,

  1344. as we

  1345. trudge

  1346. through life's

  1347. lowness,

  1348. we know that

  1349. God loves

  1350. us.

  1351. We are

  1352. assured of

  1353. it.

  1354. So when

  1355. doubts creep

  1356. in,

  1357. when the

  1358. enemy

  1359. attacks,

  1360. we have

  1361. assurance of

  1362. God's love

  1363. for us.

  1364. As I said

  1365. before,

  1366. we may not

  1367. understand it,

  1368. but we

  1369. know it.

  1370. God

  1371. loves His

  1372. children.

  1373. As we

  1374. look out on

  1375. the horizon,

  1376. we can be

  1377. assured of

  1378. a few

  1379. things.

  1380. As we

  1381. look out

  1382. far out

  1383. to the

  1384. horizon,

  1385. we can

  1386. be assured

  1387. that we

  1388. have access

  1389. to the

  1390. Creator.

  1391. so we

  1392. can pray

  1393. to Him.

  1394. We

  1395. can

  1396. fellowship

  1397. and we

  1398. can

  1399. approach

  1400. the

  1401. throne

  1402. with

  1403. boldness

  1404. because

  1405. of

  1406. Christ.

  1407. We

  1408. have

  1409. assurance

  1410. of our

  1411. future

  1412. glory.

  1413. And we

  1414. can hope

  1415. with joyful

  1416. assurance

  1417. because it

  1418. will happen.

  1419. We too

  1420. can be

  1421. fully

  1422. convinced

  1423. that God

  1424. is able

  1425. to do

  1426. what He

  1427. has

  1428. promised.

  1429. chapter 4

  1430. verse 21.

  1431. We have

  1432. assurance

  1433. that

  1434. suffering

  1435. will

  1436. occur.

  1437. It

  1438. isn't a

  1439. question

  1440. of

  1441. will

  1442. it.

  1443. It's

  1444. when

  1445. will

  1446. it.

  1447. We

  1448. will

  1449. suffer.

  1450. But

  1451. suffering

  1452. produces

  1453. endurance.

  1454. And

  1455. endurance

  1456. produces

  1457. character.

  1458. And

  1459. character

  1460. produces

  1461. hope.

  1462. Hope

  1463. that will

  1464. not

  1465. disappoint.

  1466. And we

  1467. have

  1468. assurance

  1469. that

  1470. God

  1471. loves

  1472. His

  1473. children.

  1474. We

  1475. have

  1476. proof

  1477. that

  1478. He

  1479. does

  1480. by

  1481. the

  1482. Holy

  1483. Spirit.

  1484. God

  1485. loves

  1486. us

  1487. when

  1488. He

  1489. created

  1490. us.

  1491. Loves

  1492. us

  1493. as He

  1494. calls

  1495. us.

  1496. Loves

  1497. us

  1498. as He

  1499. saves

  1500. us.

  1501. And

  1502. as He

  1503. glorifies

  1504. us in

  1505. the end.

  1506. If

  1507. God

  1508. loves

  1509. us,

  1510. let us

  1511. love

  1512. others

  1513. with the

  1514. same

  1515. certainty

  1516. and

  1517. fervor

  1518. as

  1519. our

  1520. Lord

  1521. Jesus

  1522. Christ.

  1523. 2

  1524. Corinthians

  1525. 5

  1526. 14

  1527. says,

  1528. For

  1529. the

  1530. love

  1531. of

  1532. Christ

  1533. controls

  1534. !

  1535. Another

  1536. version

  1537. compels

  1538. us.

  1539. For

  1540. the

  1541. love

  1542. of

  1543. Christ

  1544. controls

  1545. or

  1546. compels

  1547. us.

  1548. Let's

  1549. pray

  1550. that

  1551. all

  1552. of

  1553. us,

  1554. member

  1555. or

  1556. not,

  1557. visitor

  1558. or

  1559. regular,

  1560. new

  1561. believer

  1562. or

  1563. old

  1564. believer,

  1565. be

  1566. controlled

  1567. by the

  1568. love

  1569. of

  1570. Christ

  1571. who

  1572. suffer

  1573. for

  1574. us

  1575. that

  1576. we

  1577. can

  1578. have

  1579. life.

  1580. Life

  1581. abundantly

  1582. And

  1583. life

  1584. assuredly!
