  1. Sorry, I just turned this thing on a lot.

  2. Then we discussed what repentance actually is.

  3. ! Number one, we said repentance is seeing one's sin, recognizing one's sin, seeing it for what it really is, seeing it in light of how God sees it.

  4. Number two, we said repentance is sorrow over one's sin, results in a brokenness, results in a contrite heart.

  5. We see that in Psalm 51 and other places in Scripture, Psalm 38.

  6. Thirdly, we said true repentance was confessing one's sin.

  7. That's kind of the verbal expression of repentance in the life of a believer.

  8. And then fourthly, we said that it's a turning away from one's sin, which is kind of what we normally want to think about when we think about repentance.

  9. It's first and foremost in our minds, often a turning away from one's sin.

  10. But that's kind of the last stage in the process of actually repenting.

  11. It's turning away.

  12. So, okay, in light of last week's lesson, this week we're going to be talking about the other subtopic of conversion.

  13. So we have repentance in one side and we have faith on the other side.

  14. Okay, so the other aspect of conversion is faith.

  15. Jesus Christ came in Mark 1.15 and he said, repent, and then he said, and believe in the gospel.

  16. So first he said, repent, then he said, believe.

  17. These are the two aspects, main aspects of what conversion actually is.

  18. If repentance is a turning away from sin and thusly a turning around towards something else.

  19. Okay, so I'm going this way and then I repent and I do an about face and I turn a different way.

  20. Then faith is the thing that propels you forward toward something else.

  21. Okay, so I'm walking this way.

  22. I repent.

  23. That means I turn the other way and then I walk towards something else.

  24. Faith is what enables a person to do that.

  25. Okay, it's the actual going the different direction that faith is.

  26. I kind of gave you a flawed illustration last week by saying that, by saying or telling you to think about conversion as a body

  27. and then faith and repentance as the legs of that body that enable it to walk around and move.

  28. I think it would be more accurate to say that conversion is the body, okay?

  29. Repentance is the legs of that body and then faith is kind of like the muscles.

  30. That give movement, that give mobility or strength to the legs to actually function and work.

  31. I think that's more accurate.

  32. So repentance by itself is not a mobilizing thing.

  33. Just like legs without muscles are not a mobilizing thing.

  34. You have to have faith in order to move.

  35. So no man has ever come to Christ solely on repentance.

  36. Repentance.

  37. It's kind of like taking a sip of water when you're thirsty, but not exercising the proper muscles to swallow.

  38. Okay, it doesn't benefit you if you don't swallow the water and let it digest in your system.

  39. So the same thing is that if you only have repentance, if you only have the taking in of water,

  40. but you don't actually exercise that repentance with faith,

  41. it's kind of like you're wasting your time.

  42. So again, no man has ever come to Christ solely on repentance.

  43. Many people genuinely repent for crimes against others or for misconduct or for acting irresponsibly.

  44. They genuinely feel broken about stuff like that.

  45. I recently was watching the news and I saw this guy,

  46. a young man whose face was covered in tears.

  47. He was sobbing, crying, yelling because he had been driving drunk and it had hit an oncoming car that was,

  48. I think, filled with children and killed them.

  49. Okay, so this guy's in an orange jumpsuit, you know, on the defendant's side of a courtroom with his hands behind his back,

  50. you know, in handcuffs and he's crying out, he's sobbing, he's crying out,

  51. begging for mercy from the families that were prosecuting him for this crime.

  52. Okay, that's an element of repentance.

  53. I think the guy was genuinely broken about that.

  54. But that isn't biblical repentance.

  55. It's not going to get him anywhere.

  56. It's not going to benefit him in Christ.

  57. It would not bring the man any closer to Christ.

  58. And so a like-mannered repentance by you will not bring you any closer to Christ.

  59. There's a lot of things that we repent about, we feel sorry for, we get upset about,

  60. maybe tears stream down our faces about, that is not genuine repentance.

  61. Okay?

  62. Genuine repentance is God-centered.

  63. God-centered.

  64. On the last day, if that man wanted to use an argument of,

  65. hey, well, I mean, I was genuinely repentant about this thing that I did.

  66. But he had no repentance or sorrow because he had committed some kind of offense against God,

  67. that wouldn't do him any good on the last day.

  68. He would still be judged as a sinner and still condemned to hell because he did not repent to the right person,

  69. to Christ.

  70. True biblical repentance is directed towards the Creator and not fellow creation.

  71. Psalm 51.4 is a great verse.

  72. Turn there really quickly.

  73. I'll show you.

  74. Psalm 51.4.

  75. This is a really common, again, chapter of Scripture, kind of like Hebrews 11.

  76. And David is kind of had freshly committed adultery with this lady named Bathsheba.

  77. And then he had killed her husband to cover it up.

  78. And he is approached by a prophet who exposes this for him.

  79. And he's led to kind of write this psalm or pen the psalm and his brokenness.

  80. And he says this in verse 4.

  81. So mind you, again, keep this in mind.

  82. He has just killed the husband of the woman that he committed adultery with.

  83. And he says, against you, referring to God, you only have I sinned against.

  84. And done what is evil in your sight.

  85. He says, against you and you only have I sinned against.

  86. So David saw his sin as against, even in this situation, as against the Father.

  87. And that's how you should think about true repentance.

  88. It's against God.

  89. You have sinned against God.

  90. He's the one supporting you accountable.

  91. You can sin against other people as well.

  92. And we need to ask for forgiveness for them as well.

  93. We need to be given forgiveness when we sin against other people ourselves.

  94. But true repentance is against God.

  95. And that's where it's got to start.

  96. Okay?

  97. Against you and you only have I sinned against.

  98. And done what is evil in your sight.

  99. So many men feel sorrow for sin.

  100. Not because of their crime.

  101. Not because of their offense.

  102. But because they were caught.

  103. Because by what they had done, they harmed themselves.

  104. They harmed some other person.

  105. So ask yourself this question.

  106. What good will it do me, having repented, to take a step in the wrong direction?

  107. Okay?

  108. What good will it do you if you repent truly and then take a step in the wrong direction?

  109. If that step is anywhere that's not Christ, it's in the wrong direction.

  110. You could say it like this.

  111. Just because you change lanes on the wide road doesn't mean you're not headed towards death.

  112. Okay?

  113. A not God-centered repentance is kind of like changing lanes.

  114. But you're still on the wide road headed towards death.

  115. You're not avoiding it at all.

  116. You're just changing lanes.

  117. Getting a clearer view to it, in a sense.

  118. The direction of one's faith, or the object of one's faith, or the person of one's faith,

  119. is by far the most important element of one's faith.

  120. An element of repentance.

  121. Okay?

  122. There's only one way to get to God, and that is through Jesus Christ.

  123. John 14, 6 says what?

  124. I am the way.

  125. I am the truth.

  126. I am the life.

  127. Nobody comes to the Father except by me.

  128. So it starts with Christ, it ends with Christ.

  129. Your first step of faith after repentance must be towards Jesus.

  130. And must remain towards Him until the day that you die.

  131. And that is the work of conversion.

  132. When somebody is converted, okay, when you are truly saved,

  133. you get an interest in Christ.

  134. Your eyes fix on Jesus Christ.

  135. You see Him for who He truly is.

  136. You see your offenses against God, and you repent to God.

  137. Then He forgives you.

  138. He regenerates you.

  139. He enables you to believe on Him savingly,

  140. and you start walking towards Him.

  141. And that happens for the remainder of your life.

  142. It's an ongoing thing.

  143. And so the life of a Christian is a life of repentance.

  144. It's also a life of faith.

  145. Okay?

  146. We talked about repentance last week.

  147. This week is faith.

  148. That was the introduction.

  149. Let's get into it.

  150. Hebrews 11.

  151. If you turn to Psalm 51, go back to Hebrews 11.

  152. Again, now faith is the assurance or the substance of things hoped for.

  153. The conviction of things not seen.

  154. Here we are given the preeminent description of faith in all Scripture.

  155. The best one is right here.

  156. It's only one little verse, and it's small, but it is loaded with truth.

  157. And I'm looking forward to getting into it.

  158. And I want to start, as we begin to unpack this verse, I want to start with the very first word.

  159. It says, now.

  160. Okay?

  161. It says, now.

  162. We're going to start here.

  163. The author begins by saying, now.

  164. Now, this word is a transition word.

  165. Meaning, that the reader should change the way that he was thinking to a new line of thinking.

  166. Or he's, the author, in a sense, is going to transition the reader from what he just said to a new line of thinking.

  167. So, kind of like, in light of that, or like a therefore, or like a thusly, we're going to say this now.

  168. Okay?

  169. It's a transition phrase.

  170. A transition word.

  171. And because we're just jumping into this text, I need to give you guys some context.

  172. So you can understand what's happening here.

  173. It's going to help you understand the fullness of this verse, as we need to.

  174. We need to be very careful to allow the verse to speak to us in its natural flow.

  175. So, here's a little context for you.

  176. For ten chapters now, the author has been laboring to prove one primary main point.

  177. For ten chapters.

  178. That being, that the new covenant of grace, or of the blood of Jesus Christ, is better and is superior in every way to the old covenant of works.

  179. Okay?

  180. There's these things called covenants.

  181. God makes covenants with man.

  182. In the old covenant that God made initially with Adam in the garden, he said, you've got to keep my word perfectly.

  183. Now, Adam wasn't a sinner at this point in time.

  184. Okay?

  185. He had free will.

  186. He was completely free to choose to obey God.

  187. This is the Adamic covenant.

  188. Okay?

  189. And it has a lot more attached to it.

  190. But this is kind of where it starts.

  191. So, Adam had the choice to either choose to obey or not obey God.

  192. He did not.

  193. All of us fell into sin as a result of it.

  194. And so, that's the covenant of works that we were once in.

  195. We were enslaved to the law of Moses, to the old covenant of works that said, hey, you can't earn me my favor, my righteousness apart from Christ.

  196. So, they were living in this old covenant.

  197. Now, this new covenant came into play when Jesus Christ came on the scene, died, shed his blood, purchased for you life.

  198. Freedom from sin.

  199. Perfection by faith in him.

  200. That's the new covenant.

  201. Okay?

  202. So, for ten chapters, this author, we don't know who the author is in this book, but the author has been trying to prove to these people, these Jewish people, that the new covenant of grace or the blood of Jesus Christ is far better, far superior to every way, to every way and everything in the old covenant of works.

  203. And MacArthur once said this.

  204. He said, Christ is a better priest with a better sacrifice by which he sealed a better covenant.

  205. And he's writing to Jews to prove to them that the new covenant is the best.

  206. He says Christ is better than angels, than prophets, than Moses, than Aaron, than Joshua, than everything.

  207. That's what he's talked about throughout the first ten chapters.

  208. All these things.

  209. He's better than all these things.

  210. He's better than anyone and everything connected to the old covenant.

  211. So, in essence, okay, when he gets to verse 1 of chapter 11, he's saying, you have got to appropriate the new covenant of grace.

  212. You've got to possess it.

  213. You are not underneath this old covenant any longer.

  214. You need to possess this new covenant of Christ.

  215. Okay?

  216. See, the Jews were trying to earn their salvation.

  217. They had twisted this old covenant that God had set forth for them over the years into this cultish, works-based salvation that was filled with rules and all kinds of ethical obligations.

  218. I think it's something like, I mean, the Pharisees and Sadducees of Jesus' time had actually imposed upon the text of Scripture that they had at that point in time.

  219. So, imposed upon God's covenant something like 400, 600, I don't know what it is, something, hundreds, hundreds of, like, rules that were not what God had said.

  220. All these rules.

  221. You can't do this and this and this and this and this and this.

  222. I mean, it was all this total legalism.

  223. And they thought, hey, I'm going to earn God's favor by keeping these rules.

  224. They were wrong.

  225. They could never do that.

  226. They never could do that.

  227. God never intended it to be that way.

  228. So, they twisted the old covenant.

  229. And so, the 10th chapter closes with a warning to appropriate the new covenant.

  230. To make the new covenant yours.

  231. To step away from Judaism.

  232. To step away from this temple stuff.

  233. This priesthood stuff.

  234. And all that came with that.

  235. And come to the new covenant.

  236. Okay?

  237. Now, this brings up a question in the minds of the reader.

  238. Especially this early Jewish reader.

  239. That is, how?

  240. How do I do that?

  241. How do I appropriate this new covenant of Christ?

  242. How do I come into the new covenant?

  243. What do I do?

  244. See, this Jew was, again, he was used to this work system.

  245. He had no idea.

  246. He had no concept of grace.

  247. He had no idea what grace was.

  248. And these works weren't even involved.

  249. So, how then, one might ask, am I supposed to come into the new covenant?

  250. There weren't any sacrifices to make.

  251. Okay?

  252. There was no particular feasts that they had to observe.

  253. Under this new covenant of Christ.

  254. There weren't any ritual washings to go through.

  255. There was not any ceremonies to go through.

  256. There was no circumcision any longer.

  257. There wasn't even any memorization of ethics or the law anymore.

  258. All these things were nullified when Christ came and fulfilled it all and then died in righteousness.

  259. Perfect righteousness.

  260. All the works of the law were fulfilled in Christ.

  261. Someone said, or he corrects somebody I was looking for earlier.

  262. I couldn't find it.

  263. He says, I have not come to do away with the law.

  264. I've come to establish it.

  265. I haven't come to abolish the law, all these regulations.

  266. I've come to fulfill it.

  267. To become it for you.

  268. Okay?

  269. And a lot of people, I mean, I'm saying all this stuff, but a lot of people these days are still underneath the same thing.

  270. They believe they have to tack on to what Christ has done.

  271. It's Jesus Christ plus my exterior ability.

  272. Plus my ability to go to church on every single Sunday.

  273. Plus my, you know, going to Thursday night Bible study on fall break.

  274. Plus my, you know, like baking cookies for the Thursday night Bible study.

  275. You know, they have to do all these things to earn God's favor outside of Christ.

  276. And that is a, God hates nothing more than that.

  277. Than you thinking you have to do anything to earn His favor outside of Jesus.

  278. That diminishes His glory.

  279. Okay?

  280. And you get glory.

  281. That's why faith is a work of God.

  282. That's why your salvation is a work of God.

  283. That's why you're saved by grace through faith in Christ.

  284. That not of your own doing.

  285. It's a gift of God.

  286. Not of works.

  287. Lest you can boast.

  288. So God strips away from all of you the ability to boast.

  289. Okay?

  290. In this new covenant.

  291. So the answer to the question that these Jews are posing,

  292. how do I do this?

  293. How do I get this?

  294. This new covenant applied to me.

  295. The answer is believe.

  296. Have faith.

  297. It's so simple.

  298. Have faith.

  299. Have faith in Christ.

  300. Jesus' words when He died, His last words were what?

  301. It is finished.

  302. Right?

  303. It is finished.

  304. That's a pretty awesome statement.

  305. That's a loaded statement.

  306. Because that means everything that was required of us for salvation was finished.

  307. It is finished.

  308. So now we can justifiably say,

  309. all it requires is faith in Christ.

  310. Now we're going to see what real faith actually is.

  311. That's not simply intellectual descent to something.

  312. It's not simply walking down an aisle.

  313. It's not signing a card.

  314. You know, we've said this a million times.

  315. It's not for the faint of heart.

  316. Okay?

  317. True faith is serious business.

  318. I think I said last week it's warrior work.

  319. It's serious.

  320. Okay?

  321. We're going to see what this is.

  322. So having established this author,

  323. having established the preeminence of Christ over all areas of the Old Covenant,

  324. that the author now transitions in verse 1 of chapter 11

  325. to reaffirm, firstly for the Jews, what faith is.

  326. That's verse 1.

  327. He reaffirms, this is what faith is.

  328. Here's a good definition of what faith is.

  329. I'm going to describe it for you.

  330. Verse 1.

  331. And then he goes on to reassert for these Jews

  332. that it's always been faith that's saved.

  333. It's always been faith, or by faith,

  334. that the righteous have lived and pleased God.

  335. So when someone asks you,

  336. how would somebody say before Christ?

  337. By faith.

  338. It says it repetitively in Hebrews 11.

  339. It's never not been faith.

  340. It's always been intended to be faith.

  341. All the sacrifices that they were doing back in the day

  342. were meant to point to a Savior.

  343. To say, this is what you need.

  344. You can't, every day you're cutting lambs and bulls' throats

  345. and it's spilling blood

  346. because you don't have the ability to ever stop this work.

  347. This is kind of cool.

  348. The only thing that was missing from the tabernacle,

  349. the only piece of furniture that was missing from the tabernacle

  350. was a place to sit down

  351. because the work was never finished.

  352. Okay?

  353. So those priests never sat down

  354. because it was never done.

  355. Then Christ came and said,

  356. it's finished.

  357. I've done it.

  358. Okay?

  359. So he's going to reassert for them

  360. that it's always been faith

  361. that saved you.

  362. Now,

  363. the author of Hebrews

  364. doesn't exactly tell us

  365. what the object of our faith should be

  366. until chapter 12.

  367. He simply kind of describes its nature.

  368. He wants to kind of get into general,

  369. the general truth about faith first

  370. before he kind of gets specific.

  371. That's a common way

  372. that common way people write in the New Testament

  373. is to go from general to specific.

  374. So he does this.

  375. He goes general first.

  376. And I want to,

  377. I want to draw your attention

  378. for the sake of this teaching

  379. to chapter 12,

  380. which clearly,

  381. as you're going to see,

  382. distinguishes Christ

  383. as him

  384. to whom

  385. all of our faith,

  386. all of our confidence,

  387. all of our conviction

  388. should be applied.

  389. Okay?

  390. Because if you don't know

  391. what you're aiming at,

  392. you're going to miss.

  393. Okay?

  394. So all your faith,

  395. all your conviction,

  396. all your confidence

  397. has got to be aimed

  398. at Jesus Christ.

  399. Look at 12 verses 1 and 2.

  400. Therefore,

  401. since we have so great

  402. a cloud of witnesses,

  403. that's,

  404. he's referring back

  405. to what he just said

  406. in the entire chapter

  407. of Hebrews 11.

  408. Okay?

  409. Those are the witnesses.

  410. These are the people

  411. that have come before us

  412. and witnessed for us

  413. this thing,

  414. this truth,

  415. this faith.

  416. So therefore,

  417. since we have been surrounded

  418. by so great a cloud of witnesses,

  419. let us also lay aside

  420. every encumbrance

  421. in the sin

  422. which so easily entangles us

  423. and let us run with endurance

  424. the race that is set before us.

  425. How?

  426. How?

  427. Fixing our eyes on Jesus

  428. who is the author

  429. and the perfecter of faith.

  430. Fixing our eyes on Jesus

  431. who is the author

  432. and the perfecter of our faith.

  433. This is so crucial.

  434. If you don't see Jesus

  435. as the one who has authored

  436. or written

  437. or created

  438. your faith

  439. and he is the finisher

  440. of your faith as well,

  441. he's the one that drives it on,

  442. he's the one that energizes it

  443. day to day,

  444. you will burn out.

  445. You will find yourself

  446. trying to

  447. create faith

  448. from a human's ability.

  449. You will find yourself

  450. exhausted by ministry

  451. and exhausted

  452. by the scripture

  453. and exhausted

  454. by preaching

  455. and exhausted

  456. by praying

  457. and exhausted

  458. by loving

  459. and worshiping Christ.

  460. You will find yourself

  461. burnt out

  462. if you do not

  463. see Jesus

  464. every single day

  465. as the author

  466. and the finisher,

  467. the perfecter

  468. of your faith.

  469. Okay,

  470. you have got

  471. to remember this.

  472. This is so big.

  473. He's the one

  474. that gives you strength.

  475. Apart from me,

  476. you can do

  477. nothing.

  478. He says in John 15, 5.

  479. Repentance is a turning away

  480. from sin

  481. and faith

  482. is that element

  483. of conversion

  484. by which the sinner

  485. comes to Christ.

  486. It's that element

  487. of conversion

  488. by which the sinner

  489. places their faith,

  490. their eyes of faith

  491. on Jesus.

  492. In the Gospel of John,

    John 6 chapter mention

  493. chapter 6,

  494. Jesus finishes

  495. speaking to

  496. a multitude

  497. of people

  498. of his disciples.

  499. All these people

  500. gather around

  501. to hear him speak

  502. and he said

  503. some crazy,

  504. crazy stuff.

  505. He says stuff like

  506. eat my flesh,

  507. drink my blood.

  508. It's really cannibalistic

  509. and weird

  510. and strange.

  511. But Jesus says this,

  512. okay,

  513. and it freaks

  514. everybody out.

  515. And a lot of them

  516. leave.

  517. Okay,

  518. a lot of disciples

  519. part away from him

  520. and say,

  521. I can't handle this.

  522. This guy is strange.

  523. He's a Charles Manson

  524. kind of character.

  525. I'm not going to deal

  526. with this guy.

  527. Okay?

  528. So Jesus turns

  529. to his 12 disciples

  530. and he says this,

  531. you do not want

  532. to go away

  533. also do you?

  534. Simon Peter

  535. answered him

  536. and said,

  537. Lord,

  538. to whom

  539. shall we go?

  540. you have the words

  541. of eternal life

  542. and we have believed

  543. and we have come

  544. to know

  545. that you are

  546. the Holy One

  547. of God.

  548. Okay?

  549. So Jesus said

  550. some crazy stuff

  551. and a lot of people

  552. turned and left

  553. and went away

  554. from him.

  555. But he says

  556. through Peter,

  557. through Peter says,

  558. but you have the words

  559. of eternal life.

  560. We can't go anywhere else.

  561. I know it's hard

  562. to hear what you just said.

  563. It's a struggle

  564. for us to deal with that

  565. but we can't go anywhere else.

  566. We have to stay with you.

  567. You have the keys

  568. to the kingdom of God.

  569. Realize that Jesus

  570. is not an easy man

  571. to follow

  572. but he alone,

  573. okay?

  574. He alone,

  575. there's only one person

  576. that possesses

  577. the key

  578. to his father's kingdom

  579. and we must

  580. by faith

  581. follow him

  582. no matter the cost.

  583. So I say this,

  584. okay?

  585. I mention that verse

  586. to make a point.

  587. And the point is this,

  588. okay?

  589. The Jews struggled

  590. with Jesus.

  591. When he was on earth,

  592. they struggled.

  593. They said,

  594. you say hard things.

  595. You say things

  596. that are difficult

  597. to understand,

  598. that are difficult

  599. to believe

  600. and to comprehend.

  601. And not only that

  602. but you're from this town

  603. and your brothers say

  604. that you're not

  605. the real deal

  606. and there's all these

  607. kind of speculative issues

  608. with Jesus Christ.

  609. You know,

  610. I mean,

  611. you're teaching

  612. your doctrine.

  613. It's really authoritative.

  614. It's unlike anything

  615. we've ever heard.

  616. It's kind of new.

  617. We're afraid of new.

  618. You're authoritative.

  619. You know,

  620. you're doing all

  621. these crazy miracles.

  622. We don't know

  623. if it's demons

  624. or God.

  625. It's just,

  626. they struggled.

  627. The Jews struggled

  628. with Jesus.

  629. Okay?

  630. But those that knew

  631. Jesus,

  632. those that knew him

  633. experientially by faith,

  634. said,

  635. even though you're

  636. difficult sometimes,

  637. Jesus,

  638. I've got to stay with you.

  639. So,

  640. you may struggle

  641. with questions.

  642. Okay?

  643. You may struggle

  644. with questions

  645. about Jesus' teaching.

  646. About the inerrancy

  647. of Scripture.

  648. About certain doctrines.

  649. Okay?

  650. About truth

  651. that we may speak

  652. about Jesus Christ.

  653. About his resurrection.

  654. But I want to encourage you.

  655. God will answer you

  656. in due time.

  657. He says

  658. to seek him

  659. with all your heart

  660. and you're going to find him.

  661. Ask

  662. and you're going to receive.

  663. Not,

  664. the door's going to be open to you.

  665. Okay?

  666. I'm begging you.

  667. I'm asking.

  668. I'm pleading with you

  669. to just labor with Jesus.

  670. Don't get discouraged.

  671. Don't run away.

  672. Don't be like the crowd.

  673. Tarry with them.

  674. Okay?

  675. Trust in the Lord.

  676. Take him at his word.

  677. And I promise

  678. that he's going to comfort you.

  679. He's going to answer you

  680. in the end.

  681. All right.

  682. First point.

  683. I only have two points tonight.

  684. First point.

  685. Faith

  686. gives things

  687. substance.

  688. Faith

  689. gives things

  690. substance.

  691. The first phrase there

  692. in our verse,

  693. Hebrews 11.

  694. One says,

  695. faith is the substance

  696. of things hoped for.

  697. The word substance

  698. is hypostasis

  699. in the Greek.

  700. And it could be translated

  701. ground or foundation

  702. or substructure.

  703. That which has actual substance.

  704. Real being.

  705. In the Greek.

  706. Real substance.

  707. Real being

  708. is what it says

  709. in the Greek.

  710. Literally.

  711. A thing hoped for

  712. is not a tangible thing,

  713. is it?

  714. This is a strange phrase.

  715. I'll give you that.

  716. Listen.

  717. Faith is the

  718. assurance

  719. or the substance

  720. of things hoped for.

  721. Something hoped for

  722. doesn't have any ground.

  723. Doesn't have any foundation.

  724. Doesn't have any tangibility.

  725. It's hoped for.

  726. Okay.

  727. If I

  728. or I don't

  729. hope for an ice cream cone

  730. if I've got it,

  731. if I've got one in my hand.

  732. I hope for an ice cream cone

  733. when I'm standing

  734. on the corner

  735. at my house

  736. waiting for the ice cream

  737. truck to come

  738. through my neighborhood

  739. and make it stop.

  740. You know,

  741. like that's what I'm hoping

  742. for that ice cream cone.

  743. It's not when I have it

  744. in my hand

  745. and I can lick it.

  746. That doesn't make any sense.

  747. I'm not hoping for that

  748. if it's in my possession.

  749. So if the thing is already

  750. in your possession

  751. then you don't hope for it.

  752. Somehow

  753. faith

  754. has the ability

  755. according to the verse

  756. to give a thing

  757. hoped for

  758. realness.

  759. Substance.

  760. Okay.

  761. Realness.

  762. It's like tasting

  763. the ice cream cone

  764. before it's in your mouth.

  765. That's kind of what

  766. faith does.

  767. So from the beginning

  768. this eliminates

  769. any notion

  770. that faith is whimsical,

  771. faith is emotional,

  772. unintelligible,

  773. silly,

  774. easy,

  775. mystical,

  776. fantastical,

  777. anything like that.

  778. Okay.

  779. Biblical faith is rocky.

  780. It's real.

  781. It's tangible.

  782. It's got content.

  783. It's got substance to it.

  784. It's not some

  785. fan,

  786. you know,

  787. idea.

  788. It's real.

  789. It does things.

  790. What does this mean though?

  791. What is this?

  792. Faith is the substance

  793. of things.

  794. What does that mean?

  795. MacArthur

  796. kind of put it like this.

  797. Faith gives things

  798. hope for

  799. a present

  800. substance.

  801. A presence.

  802. I'm going to explain this.

  803. A present substance.

  804. The examples of our author

  805. that he's about to give

  806. and illustrate

  807. in the rest of this chapter

  808. illustrate

  809. time after time

  810. a person

  811. that believes

  812. in a promise of God

  813. so much so

  814. that it radically

  815. affects the way

  816. they think

  817. about things.

  818. I'm going to say that again.

  819. Okay.

  820. Time and time again

  821. the author illustrates

  822. for us

  823. a person

  824. believing in a promise

  825. of God

  826. so much so

  827. that it

  828. radically affects

  829. the way they

  830. think about things.

  831. They can be in a crazy,

  832. bad,

  833. horrible circumstance

  834. and yet be content

  835. somehow.

  836. They can have joy

  837. in the midst of suffering

  838. somehow.

  839. Now,

  840. this,

  841. okay,

  842. I'm pausing

  843. because I want this

  844. to sink into your brain.

  845. This is incredibly important

  846. for you to understand

  847. what faith actually does

  848. to you

  849. when you exercise it rightly.

  850. They believe so strongly

  851. that what God said

  852. that he would do

  853. so much so

  854. that it radically

  855. affected the way

  856. that these righteous saints

  857. thought about life.

  858. Take Abraham and Sarah

  859. for example first.

  860. Okay,

  861. Abraham trusted God

  862. for 19 years

  863. after he received

  864. the promise

  865. of a son.

  866. 19 years.

  867. His name was,

  868. this is kind of cool,

  869. his name was Abram

  870. initially

  871. which meant

  872. father of many.

  873. Then,

  874. God said,

  875. I'm going to make you

  876. a father

  877. of multitudes

  878. and your name

  879. is now Abraham

  880. which means

  881. father of multitudes.

  882. Now,

  883. Abraham

  884. was kind of a

  885. stationary guy.

  886. Okay,

  887. he was kind of like

  888. the first person

  889. you would see

  890. when you walk into town.

  891. So,

  892. what do you do

  893. when you meet somebody?

  894. Hey,

  895. I'm John.

  896. You are Abraham.

  897. Oh,

  898. father of multitudes.

  899. How many sons do you have?

  900. None.

  901. And it was incredibly,

  902. this is a very,

  903. this is a very,

  904. sons and daughters,

  905. like that's an incredibly

  906. important thing

  907. back in the day.

  908. I mean,

  909. if you didn't have a family

  910. like you were

  911. considered to be,

  912. you know,

  913. you were like the,

  914. what's it called?

  915. The Brahmin

  916. and like the what?

  917. Untouchable.

  918. You were untouchable.

  919. Yeah.

  920. Okay.

  921. It was,

  922. it was incredibly embarrassing.

  923. For 19 years,

  924. this guy just suffered

  925. through this.

  926. He was like,

  927. come on God,

  928. 19 years.

  929. I was already

  930. father of many.

  931. That was embarrassing.

  932. Now I'm father

  933. of multitudes.

  934. And my wife

  935. is feral.

  936. This is embarrassing.

  937. Okay.

  938. So somehow,

  939. faith for Abraham

  940. and Sarah,

  941. we learn this in

  942. Romans 4,

  943. 20.

  944. It says this about Abraham.

  945. He didn't waver in faith.

  946. Even when he considered

  947. his own body.

  948. It was as good as dead,

  949. it says.

  950. He was like a hundred.

  951. You can't have kids

  952. when you're a hundred.

  953. Not wavering in unbelief,

  954. but growing strong

  955. in faith.

  956. He grew strong

  957. in faith

  958. and that gave glory

  959. to God.

  960. He did not doubt God.

  961. He did Abraham's wife,

  962. Sarah,

  963. doubt God.

  964. Look at verse 11

  965. of our chapter.

  966. It says this,

  967. by faith,

  968. even Sarah herself

  969. received the ability

  970. to conceive.

  971. Even beyond the proper

  972. time of life

  973. that she was considered,

  974. keyword,

  975. considered,

  976. or thought,

  977. remember I said

  978. it changes the way

  979. you think about things?

  980. So Sarah considered

  981. a thought,

  982. God faithful

  983. who had promised.

  984. Faith for her

  985. translated into

  986. a new way of thinking

  987. that gave her

  988. the ability

  989. to trust God.

  990. Even though

  991. it was impossible.

  992. The elements said

  993. it was impossible.

  994. She's 90 years old.

  995. Her husband's 100 years old.

  996. They're past the time

  997. of childbearing.

  998. There's no possible

  999. way this is going to happen.

  1000. They didn't bear children

  1001. when they were healthy

  1002. and vibrant.

  1003. Now they're definitely

1004. not going to do it

  1005. when they're old

  1006. and decrepit.

  1007. But they do

  1008. and they have faith

1009. and it makes it happen.

  1010. Faith gives the thing

  1011. they hoped for,

  1012. which is Isaac

  1013. in their case,

  1014. that was their son,

  1015. son of promise,

  1016. a present substance

  1017. enabling them

  1018. to patiently,

  1019. faithfully,

  1020. and even joyfully

  1021. wait for the promise

  1022. to be fulfilled.

  1023. Okay?

  1024. That's what faith is.

  1025. Real biblical faith is.

  1026. That's one of the

  1027. descriptions he gives you.

  1028. There's a lot of them.

  1029. And that gave glory

  1030. to God.

  1031. They didn't have

  1032. a physical Isaac

  1033. in their possession yet,

  1034. but they believed

  1035. so much so

  1036. that it brought them

  1037. real joy

1038. when they thought about it.

  1039. Okay?

  1040. Abraham believed God

  1041. so much so

  1042. that it changed

1043. the way that he thought.

  1044. Okay?

  1045. Now realize this,

  1046. okay?

  1047. You are called

  1048. to have the same

  1049. kind of faith.

  1050. What does Jesus say

  1051. in John 14,

    John 14:1

  1052. verse 1?

  1053. Don't let your heart

  1054. be troubled.

  1055. Believe in God.

  1056. Believe also in me.

1057. Then what does he say?

  1058. He says,

  1059. in my Father's house

  1060. are many mansions,

  1061. many dwelling places.

1062. If it were not so,

  1063. I wouldn't have told you that.

  1064. I go to prepare

  1065. a place for you.

  1066. When I'm done

  1067. with my stuff,

1068. I'm going to come back

  1069. and get you.

  1070. Now,

  1071. you realize

  1072. that's a promise

1073. that he's making to you.

  1074. I'm going away.

1075. I'm going to come back.

  1076. I got dwelling places

  1077. in my Father's house

  1078. for you.

  1079. That's a promise

  1080. that's meant to

  1081. quench your worry.

  1082. It's meant to pacify

  1083. your anxieties.

  1084. Okay?

  1085. When you think about

  1086. things that are heavenly

  1087. like that,

1088. when you set your mind

  1089. on heavenly things,

  1090. it makes these earthly

  1091. issues that we're

  1092. dealing with

1093. obsolete in a lot of ways.

1094. It kind of puts them

  1095. in perspective.

  1096. It's not really

1097. that big of a deal.

  1098. I don't have a car.

  1099. I don't have a job.

  1100. I just got a job yesterday.

  1101. I didn't have a job

  1102. for a long time.

  1103. I was poor.

1104. But at the same time,

1105. in light of the reality

  1106. of me being saved

  1107. by God's grace

1108. and God is coming back

1109. for me on a white horse

1110. with blood on his robe

  1111. to kill all sin,

  1112. death, and hell,

1113. and I'm going to be

  1114. a part of that,

  1115. I'm not really worried

  1116. about it.

  1117. It's not a big deal.

  1118. That's what faith

  1119. is meant to do.

1120. It's meant to free you

1121. from these kinds of things.

  1122. He says,

  1123. don't let your heart

  1124. be troubled.

  1125. How?

  1126. Believe in God.

  1127. Believe also in me.

  1128. Here's my promise.

  1129. I'm coming back.

  1130. Don't worry about it.

  1131. This is faith.

1132. Same thing of Matthew 6,

  1133. 32 and 34.

  1134. Through 34,

  1135. he talks about,

  1136. hey,

  1137. if you're worried about

  1138. your food and shelter

  1139. and your clothing,

  1140. I'm going to make

  1141. a promise to you.

  1142. Seek first my kingdom

  1143. and my righteousness

  1144. and all these things

  1145. you're worried about

1146. will be added to you.

  1147. Don't worry about tomorrow.

  1148. Tomorrow,

  1149. today has enough

  1150. trouble of its own.

1151. Just focus on right here,

  1152. right now.

  1153. I'm going to,

1154. I have you in my hands.

  1155. I love you.

  1156. My righteousness

  1157. is applied to you.

  1158. Don't worry about

  1159. that stuff anymore.

  1160. I'm going to provide.

  1161. And he always has.

  1162. Show me a verse.

1163. Show me a point in time

  1164. in history.

1165. Show me a point in time

1166. in any true Christian's life

1167. when God really deserted them.

1168. And you can't do it

  1169. because it hasn't happened.

1170. That's the reality of faith.

  1171. The thing to admire

1172. about these Old Testament saints

1173. we read in Hebrews 11

  1174. is their faith.

  1175. They're incredible

1176. in the way that they persevere.

  1177. The promises that came

  1178. to those people

  1179. were so real

  1180. that even though

  1181. they never saw them,

1182. they based their life on them.

  1183. Do you realize that?

  1184. They never saw

  1185. these promises fulfilled.

  1186. I mean,

  1187. Abraham had one son.

1188. That wasn't multitudes of people.

  1189. God said,

1190. go look at the stars.

1191. As many as you can see,

  1192. that's how many sons

  1193. you're going to have.

  1194. faith.

1195. Like the grains of sand

  1196. on the beaches.

  1197. He saw one.

1198. He grew strong in faith.

1199. He believed in what God said.

  1200. And his people

  1201. continued and continued

  1202. and continued.

1203. And the story of the Old Testament

  1204. is incredible

  1205. to see how God

  1206. raised up a people

  1207. through Abraham's lineage,

  1208. through Isaac

  1209. and Jacob

1210. and the sons of Judah

  1211. and all these people.

  1212. and he preserved them.

1213. You see things like Joseph,

  1214. you know,

1215. he was traded into slavery

  1216. in Egypt

1217. and then he was shipped off

1218. and he was in jail

  1219. for running away from

  1220. Potiphar's wife,

  1221. I think,

  1222. or something like that.

1223. And then he was brought back up

  1224. and Pharaoh put him

1225. as his second hand man

1226. and then he was able to save

1227. the rest of his family,

  1228. the lineage of Abraham,

1229. because he was in that position

  1230. to do so.

1231. God is just time and time again

  1232. providentially answering

  1233. and answering

  1234. and answering

  1235. and answering

  1236. and saying,

1237. my promise is going to be fulfilled.

  1238. My promise to Abraham

1239. is going to be fulfilled.

1240. All these things are happening.

  1241. My Davidic covenant

1242. is going to be fulfilled.

  1243. Abrahamic covenant

1244. is going to be fulfilled.

  1245. All these things

  1246. God is doing

  1247. and is doing

  1248. and is doing

  1249. and preserving

  1250. and he's never not

  1251. fulfilled these promises.

  1252. 2 Corinthians 1

  1253. something

  1254. 20 says this,

  1255. for as many

1256. as may be the promises

  1257. of God and him

  1258. that's in Christ,

  1259. they're yes.

  1260. Wherefore also

  1261. by him

  1262. is our amen

  1263. to the glory

  1264. of God

  1265. through us.

  1266. So we have nothing

  1267. to worry about.

  1268. These Old Testament people

  1269. simply took God

  1270. at his word

  1271. and they lived

1272. on the basis of that.

  1273. They were people

  1274. of faith

  1275. and that faith

  1276. gave substance

1277. to what was in the future.

  1278. Maybe you're still confused,

  1279. okay?

  1280. Maybe you are.

  1281. I don't know.

  1282. I'm making it

  1283. more practical for you.

  1284. Have you ever hoped

  1285. for anything

  1286. with such certainty

  1287. that it became

  1288. a present reality

  1289. to you?

  1290. Have you ever

  1291. so hoped

  1292. for something

  1293. that it became

  1294. a present reality

  1295. for you?

  1296. Maybe like vacation,

  1297. right?

  1298. It's May.

  1299. No.

  1300. It's April.

  1301. Crazy school April

  1302. where all my tests

  1303. are happening.

  1304. I'm psyched out

  1305. and there's that,

  1306. there's those few moments

  1307. when I know that,

1308. hey, my vacation in May

  1309. is coming up

1310. and I'm thinking about it

  1311. and I'm thinking about

1312. my feet being in the sand

  1313. and in the ocean

  1314. and I'm thinking about

1315. just relaxing on the beach

  1316. with a book

  1317. and hanging out

  1318. with my best friends

1319. and soaking in the rays

  1320. and I'm just like,

  1321. I can feel,

  1322. oh my gosh,

  1323. I cannot wait

  1324. to that moment.

  1325. Right?

  1326. You so dwell upon

  1327. that moment

  1328. that it becomes

  1329. a present reality

  1330. for you

1331. and you take joy in it.

  1332. Right?

  1333. That's an example.

  1334. Another example

  1335. is a baby, right?

  1336. You don't have a baby yet

  1337. but you prepare

  1338. for the baby.

  1339. You get all excited

  1340. about the baby.

  1341. You paint the room.

  1342. You get all the,

  1343. you get the cradle.

1344. You get all these things

  1345. set up.

  1346. You get the colors.

  1347. You, you know,

  1348. see this sonogram

  1349. whatever thing it's called

  1350. and then finally

  1351. the baby does come

  1352. but before that

  1353. you're still,

  1354. you're rejoicing

  1355. in that baby's preparation.

  1356. You can,

  1357. you're thinking about it.

  1358. You're anticipating it.

  1359. You have faith

1360. that it's going to come

1361. and because of your faith,

  1362. because of your certainty

  1363. of that thing happening,

  1364. it gives you

  1365. a present substance.

  1366. A present reality.

  1367. A realness.

  1368. A tangibleness.

  1369. Right?

1370. Steak dinner is the same way.

1371. Going home after a long day

  1372. is the same way.

1373. Heaven is the same way.

  1374. Read Revelation.

  1375. It's incredible

  1376. what you agree

  1377. about reading about heaven.

  1378. John MacArthur,

  1379. what he was like,

  1380. he was saying this,

  1381. this,

  1382. a great sermon I listened to

1383. kind of preparing for this

  1384. on this passage.

  1385. He was like,

  1386. you know,

  1387. I've,

  1388. I've,

1389. I've basically been to heaven

1390. in a lot of ways.

1391. Like I've read so much

  1392. about this

1393. and I've studied it so hard

1394. and I've seen the pearly gates

  1395. and I know,

1396. and I know the dimensions of heaven

1397. and I've been to the,

  1398. to the,

  1399. you know,

  1400. glass or crystal sea

1401. and I've seen that tree of life

  1402. and all these things

  1403. and I've,

  1404. I've pictured

  1405. and I've imagined

  1406. and I've meditated on

1407. God sitting on his throne.

  1408. He's like,

  1409. I've been there.

  1410. I mean,

1411. it's given me present reality

  1412. and joy

1413. even though it's not here yet.

  1414. Right?

  1415. But it is here.

  1416. Already,

  1417. but not yet

  1418. kind of idea.

  1419. So,

  1420. J.

  1421. Mac said,

  1422. faith is the ability

  1423. to take that

1424. which is in the future

1425. and give it a present substance.

  1426. That's what it is.

  1427. Here's the difference though

  1428. between bringing present substance

  1429. to those things

  1430. that I just mentioned

1431. and being able to bring

  1432. real and present substance

  1433. to Jesus Christ.

1434. It is the supernatural work

  1435. of God

  1436. that enables a man

  1437. to see

  1438. and to believe

  1439. in Christ

  1440. with such assurance

  1441. that it becomes

  1442. a present reality.

  1443. Okay?

  1444. Everybody

  1445. can do that

  1446. for a steak dinner

  1447. or for a vacation.

  1448. But not everybody

  1449. can do this

  1450. with Jesus.

  1451. So,

  1452. the difference is

  1453. faith

  1454. is a thing

  1455. that God

  1456. must give you.

  1457. He is the author.

  1458. He is the finisher.

  1459. The perfecter

  1460. of your faith.

  1461. Okay?

  1462. So,

1463. if you don't have this,

  1464. this faith in Christ

  1465. that enables you

  1466. to have Him

  1467. as a present reality,

1468. to go about your days,

  1469. to endure persecution

  1470. or suffering

  1471. or bad days

  1472. or good days

1473. or whatever else it may be,

1474. if you don't have that Christ,

1475. then you need to pray

  1476. on your knees

  1477. for that Christ.

1478. you need to ask God

  1479. with all your heart,

  1480. soul, mind,

  1481. and strength

  1482. to give you

  1483. Jesus Christ

1484. no matter what it costs you.

  1485. There is nothing

  1486. in this world

1487. that is better than Him.

  1488. There's not a single thing.

  1489. Okay?

  1490. So,

  1491. if you don't know

  1492. Jesus in this capacity

1493. where He is a real thing

  1494. to you,

  1495. if He's just some

  1496. distant idea

  1497. or some guy

  1498. that you've learned about

  1499. like you've learned about

  1500. a John Calvin

  1501. or a John Wesley

  1502. or if He's just

  1503. some historical figure

  1504. to you,

  1505. then you're not saved.

  1506. Because salvation

  1507. produces this faith

  1508. that takes hold

  1509. of Christ

  1510. and says,

  1511. this is my Christ

  1512. now.

  1513. He's my possession.

  1514. I'm going to cling

  1515. on to Him.

  1516. It's a cool...

  1517. Mary, right?

  1518. Mary,

  1519. another good example.

  1520. She sees Jesus

  1521. at the tomb.

  1522. She's so elated.

  1523. She's so filled

1524. with joy to see Jesus.

  1525. He says,

  1526. don't cling to me.

  1527. Don't cling to me.

  1528. We should be

  1529. that kind of way.

  1530. You know?

  1531. May Jesus say,

  1532. get off me.

  1533. You're clinging

  1534. too close to me.

  1535. You know?

1536. He's not going to say that.

  1537. I'm just saying,

  1538. in this scenario,

1539. we should be like a Mary

  1540. that just grabs

  1541. on to Jesus

1542. and holds on to Him.

  1543. The Scripture says

  1544. that Jesus knows

  1545. His church

  1546. like Adam knew

  1547. His wife.

  1548. That's an intimate thing.

  1549. I mean,

  1550. it's sexual intercourse

  1551. between Adam and Eve.

  1552. And that's meant

  1553. to be reflective

  1554. of God's intimacy

  1555. with His people.

  1556. It's intense.

  1557. It's not sexual.

  1558. I'm just saying

  1559. it's intense, though.

  1560. You know?

  1561. True faith

  1562. isn't mystical longing.

  1563. It's a certainty

  1564. about Christ.

  1565. It changes the way

  1566. you think about everything.

1567. A true man or woman

  1568. of faith

  1569. will be able to

  1570. actively believe

1571. in the promises of God

  1572. so as to bear

  1573. the fruits of faith.

  1574. Love, joy, peace,

  1575. patience, kindness.

  1576. These things

  1577. are a reality

  1578. for the believer

  1579. because of their faith

  1580. in Christ

  1581. who supplies them

  1582. with it.

  1583. And it's not circumstantial.

1584. I want to give you

  1585. one more illustration

  1586. from the Scripture.

  1587. Turn to 2 Corinthians.

1588. This is just a good illustration

1589. of what I've just said.

  1590. Faith has the ability

  1591. to change the way

  1592. you think about things.

  1593. 2 Corinthians 1,

  1594. beginning in verse 8.

  1595. This is Paul.

  1596. He says,

1597. We do not want you

  1598. to be unaware, brethren,

  1599. of our affliction

1600. which came to us in Asia.

  1601. So in Asia,

  1602. they were afflicted.

  1603. They were persecuted

  1604. for something.

  1605. That we were burdened

  1606. excessively

  1607. beyond our strength

  1608. so that we despaired

  1609. even of life.

  1610. So Paul,

  1611. in a sense,

  1612. was suicidal.

  1613. Okay?

  1614. He was so afflicted

  1615. in Asia

  1616. that he despaired

  1617. of even living.

1618. He didn't want to live anymore.

  1619. He was so afflicted.

  1620. Indeed,

  1621. we had a sentence

  1622. of death

  1623. within ourselves

  1624. in order that we

  1625. should not trust

  1626. in ourselves

  1627. but in God

  1628. who raises the dead.

  1629. Who delivered us

  1630. from so great

  1631. a peril of death

  1632. and will deliver us.

  1633. He on whom

1634. we have set our hope

  1635. and He will yet

  1636. deliver us.

  1637. So Paul is burdened

  1638. excessively

1639. beyond what he can bear.

  1640. And he says,

  1641. the only thing

  1642. that sustained me

  1643. was that promise

  1644. that you see

  1645. in verse 9 there.

  1646. I put my hope,

  1647. I put my trust

  1648. in God

  1649. who raises

  1650. the dead.

  1651. That was the promise

  1652. that Paul

  1653. clung to

  1654. in his persecution

  1655. that enabled him

  1656. to endure.

1657. And then he goes on

  1658. and he starts

  1659. praising God

  1660. and he says,

  1661. who delivered us

  1662. from so great

  1663. a peril of death

1664. and He will deliver us.

  1665. He on whom

1666. we have set our hope

  1667. and He will yet

  1668. deliver us.

  1669. Three times

  1670. in one verse

  1671. He says He's going

  1672. to deliver us.

1673. He's going to deliver us.

1674. I know it is true.

  1675. It was a certainty

  1676. about Christ.

  1677. There wasn't some

  1678. mystical,

  1679. you know,

  1680. wishful thinking.

  1681. I hope it happens.

  1682. It wasn't a

  1683. maybe this is going

  1684. to happen.

  1685. I hope it happens.

  1686. It was a

  1687. I know

  1688. in Christ

  1689. this will happen.

  1690. He will keep me.

  1691. He will enable me.

  1692. This is faith.

  1693. Okay,

1694. this is what faith is.

  1695. Changes the way

  1696. that you think

  1697. about things.

  1698. Secondly,

  1699. oh,

  1700. good quote for us

  1701. from Spurgeon.

  1702. Little faith,

1703. a little bit of it,

  1704. will bring the soul

  1705. to heaven.

  1706. But much faith

  1707. will bring heaven

  1708. to the soul.

  1709. Little faith

  1710. will bring you

  1711. to heaven.

  1712. But much faith

  1713. will bring heaven

  1714. to the soul.

  1715. Now,

  1716. do you lack

  1717. in joy?

  1718. Do you lack

  1719. in hope?

  1720. Do you lack

  1721. in peace?

  1722. You've got to

  1723. grow in your faith.

  1724. Start taking God

  1725. at His word

  1726. and just reading it

  1727. and saying,

  1728. all right,

  1729. God,

  1730. you said,

  1731. you said this today.

  1732. I'm going to apply

  1733. it to my life.

  1734. You said it's better

  1735. to give than

  1736. to receive.

1737. So give me the grace

  1738. to give today.

  1739. I'm just going to

  1740. trust it.

  1741. Right?

  1742. And sure enough,

  1743. I promise you,

  1744. God's going to come

  1745. through on that.

1746. He's going to prove it.

  1747. Second point,

  1748. she's going to be

  1749. shorter.

  1750. One page.

  1751. Faith gives

  1752. things feet.

  1753. First point was

  1754. faith gives

  1755. things substance.

  1756. Second point is

  1757. faith gives

  1758. things feet.

  1759. Feet.

  1760. faith says

  1761. verse one.

  1762. Faith is the

  1763. assurance of

  1764. things hoped for.

  1765. It is the

  1766. conviction of

  1767. things not

  1768. seen.

  1769. These are very

  1770. closely related.

  1771. These two phrases

  1772. are just a kind

  1773. of a description

  1774. here.

  1775. But the big

  1776. discrepancy between

  1777. the first phrase

  1778. and the second

  1779. phrase is the

  1780. idea of action.

  1781. OK, the first

  1782. thing changed the

  1783. way you thought

  1784. about it.

  1785. The second, the

  1786. conviction of things

  1787. not seen changes

  1788. the way that you

  1789. live.

  1790. Changes the way

  1791. that you live.

  1792. The word for

  1793. conviction is I

  1794. can't say

  1795. L.

  1796. L.

  1797. L.

  1798. L.

  1799. L.

  1800. That's the Greek

  1801. word for conviction

  1802. and it means a

  1803. proof.

  1804. That by which a

  1805. thing is proved or

  1806. tested.

  1807. L.

  1808. L.

  1809. L.

  1810. L.

  1811. L.

  1812. L.

  1813. L.

1814. but it's also in the way that one lives.

1815. This is a little bit further step from the phrase of our verse.

1816. It implies action, as I said, okay?

1817. It implies an action, activity,

1818. something that I do in light of what I believe now.

1819. J. Max said, this is banking your life on your hope.

1820. This is putting all your chips in to Christ.

1821. The faith, this faith is lived out.

1822. I like to think of it as an expression of one's faith.

  1823. Have you seen God?

  1824. Have you smelled Him?

  1825. Have you tasted Him?

  1826. Have you touched Him?

  1827. Have you heard Him?

  1828. No.

  1829. Yet you believe.

1830. Not one of your five senses has ever sensed Him,

  1831. yet you believe.

  1832. Can you observe Him?

  1833. No.

1834. Can you test Him in a test tube?

  1835. No.

1836. Can you look at Him through a microscope?

  1837. No.

1838. Yet you believe in Him.

1839. So although you cannot prove God scientifically,

1840. you still believe in God.

  1841. That's a strange thing.

1842. That's weird that you would do that.

1843. The word elechaz could also be translated evidence.

  1844. Okay?

  1845. Evidence.

1846. It's the evidence of things not seen.

1847. Faith in the life of a regenerate person

1848. is the greatest evidence that there is a God.

1849. God has seen fit to shame the wise people,

  1850. the worldly wise people,

  1851. by enabling

  1852. the...

  1853. What was it again?

1854. Not the Brahmin and the...

  1855. The untouchables.

  1856. We're the untouchables.

  1857. He's enabled the untouchables

  1858. to do His will.

1859. To live a life of faith.

  1860. To accomplish things

1861. that really can't just be explained.

  1862. I don't think it's coincidental

  1863. that God has ordained

1864. the majority of His salvations

  1865. to come through

  1866. the faithful witness

  1867. of His people.

1868. You can see more of God

1869. in the life of a believer

  1870. than anywhere else.

  1871. Okay?

1872. So faith is something that's supernatural.

1873. It's not going to be simply

  1874. ascertained by

  1875. a Bunsen burner

  1876. and microscopes

  1877. and test tubes.

  1878. Okay?

1879. God is an invisible God.

1880. And He has revealed Himself

  1881. in Christ.

1882. So if you want to

  1883. know about God,

1884. if you want to study God,

  1885. if you want to

  1886. understand Him,

1887. if you want to get

  1888. evidence for Him,

  1889. first look at Christ

  1890. who says,

  1891. I have...

  1892. If you've seen me,

  1893. you've seen the Father,

  1894. He says.

  1895. If you've seen me,

  1896. you've seen the Father.

  1897. So look at Christ,

  1898. firstly,

1899. and then look at His people.

  1900. And you will know

1901. that there is a God.

1902. Faith in the first place,

1903. first phrase of our verse,

  1904. actualizes a future truth.

1905. It brings it into one's possession.

  1906. Okay?

1907. Faith in the first phrase,

  1908. which is the substance

  1909. of things hoped for,

  1910. brings a future truth

  1911. into your possession.

1912. It brings it into the heart

  1913. and the mind

  1914. of the believer.

  1915. The second phrase

1916. commits a life to it.

1917. It commits your life to it.

  1918. It changes the way

  1919. that you think,

1920. then it changes the way

  1921. that you live.

  1922. Look at Noah,

  1923. verse 7 of Hebrews 11.

  1924. By faith,

  1925. Noah,

  1926. being warned by God

  1927. about the things

  1928. not yet seen,

  1929. in reverence,

  1930. prepared an ark

  1931. for the salvation

  1932. of his household,

  1933. by which he condemned

  1934. the world

  1935. and became an heir

  1936. of the righteousness

  1937. which is according

  1938. to faith.

  1939. This is ridiculous

  1940. what Noah did.

  1941. Okay?

  1942. Backward information

  1943. on Noah.

1944. Noah lived in a time

1945. in which it had never

  1946. rained before.

1947. He had never seen rain.

  1948. Ever.

1949. There was a vapor canopy

  1950. surrounding the earth

1951. at this point in time.

  1952. This is pre-flood.

1953. It was different back then.

  1954. People had to be

  1955. 900 years old.

  1956. UV rays were basically

  1957. non-existent

1958. in a lot of ways.

  1959. It's wild.

  1960. Okay?

1961. He had never seen rain.

  1962. God says,

  1963. build a ship.

1964. I'm going to flood this place.

  1965. Noah says,

  1966. okay,

  1967. 120 years later,

  1968. God lets rain happen.

  1969. 120 years.

  1970. Okay,

  1971. if you think

  1972. Abraham's ridicule was bad,

  1973. imagine Noah's.

  1974. What are you doing?

  1975. You're building a boat?

  1976. It's been 80 years.

  1977. It's not rain.

1978. It's not going to happen.

  1979. The guy's an idiot.

  1980. Right?

  1981. 120 years.

  1982. It's one thing to

  1983. think about rain

  1984. and say,

  1985. that might happen.

  1986. Yeah,

  1987. I hope that happens.

  1988. It's another thing

1989. to commit a life to it.

  1990. This is the example

1991. of faith that we're given.

  1992. This is God saying,

  1993. hey,

1994. your faith should be like this.

  1995. It's ridiculous sometimes.

1996. It doesn't make a lot of sense

  1997. sometimes.

  1998. You know,

  1999. we're worried about putting

  2000. more than 10%

  2001. in the offering plate.

  2002. Noah's worried about

2003. rain coming after year 85.

  2004. Okay,

  2005. faith is nothing.

2006. But this is the kind of faith

  2007. we're called to have.

2008. This is the kind of faith

  2009. that God will give

  2010. to His people.

2011. Faith is to believe it

2012. and then bet your life on it.

  2013. Boom.

  2014. But the natural man

  2015. can't do this.

  2016. He cannot,

  2017. like Moses in 1127,

2018. see Him who is unseen.

  2019. They can't see this.

  2020. They can't see God.

2021. They can't see the reason

  2022. in doing that.

  2023. They think it's foolishness

  2024. the Gentiles do.

  2025. Foolishness,

  2026. atheists will call you.

  2027. Idiot.

  2028. Wasting your life.

2029. Missing the point of life.

  2030. No.

  2031. No.

  2032. Not the last day.

2033. We'll see if it's the last word.

2034. This faith in which we speak

  2035. cannot be acquired

  2036. through observable proofs.

  2037. 1 Corinthians 2.9

  2038. establishes this.

  2039. Things which eye

  2040. has not seen,

  2041. ear has not heard,

  2042. which have not entered

  2043. the heart of man,

2044. all that God has prepared

2045. for those who love Him.

  2046. For to us...

  2047. Who's that?

  2048. Who's the us?

  2049. Christians.

  2050. Christians.

2051. All that God has prepared

2052. for those who love Him.

  2053. For to us,

  2054. God revealed them

  2055. through the Spirit.

2056. So if you have Christ,

  2057. you have His Spirit.

2058. His Spirit is a guarantee.

2059. His Spirit is a pledge.

  2060. It's a down payment.

2061. That this is true of you.

  2062. You have this ability.

  2063. You have this salvation.

2064. I'm going to give you

2065. my Spirit to prove it.

2066. But the world can't see it.

2067. Their ears can't hear it.

  2068. They can't perceive it.

  2069. It hasn't entered

  2070. their heart yet.

  2071. It's a supernatural thing.

  2072. How do you know

2073. what real faith looks like

2074. in a very practical sense?

2075. I think you should turn

2076. to the parable of the sower.

  2077. Okay?

  2078. Test yourself to this.

  2079. In Matthew...

  2080. You know what?

  2081. I'll tell you what.

  2082. I'll just explain it.

  2083. Matthew 13.

  2084. Alright?

  2085. Matthew 13.

  2086. Jesus describes

2087. the parable of the sower.

  2088. And He says,

  2089. the first...

  2090. He says,

  2091. a sower goes out

  2092. to sow some seed.

  2093. He sows some seed

  2094. against the rock,

  2095. against the pathway,

  2096. basically,

  2097. on the rock.

2098. Then He sows some seed

  2099. on...

  2100. No.

  2101. Okay.

  2102. Forget about it.

  2103. I can't recall it.

2104. We're going to read it.

  2105. Alright?

  2106. I know it's already

  2107. 10 till...

  2108. It's fall breaks

  2109. and nobody's got a test

  2110. tomorrow

2111. so I can keep you longer.

  2112. Let's just read this.

  2113. It's so good.

  2114. 13.1

  2115. On that day,

  2116. Jesus went out

  2117. of the house

2118. and was sitting by the sea

  2119. and great multitudes

  2120. gathered to Him

2121. so that He got in the boat

  2122. and sat down

  2123. and the whole multitude

2124. was standing on the beach

2125. and He spoke many things

  2126. to them in parables,

  2127. saying,

  2128. Behold,

2129. the sower went out to sow.

  2130. And as He sowed,

2131. some seed fell beside the road

  2132. and the birds came

  2133. and ate them up.

  2134. Other seeds fell upon

  2135. the rocky places

2136. where they did not have

  2137. much soil

2138. and immediately they sprang up

2139. because they had no depth of soil.

2140. But when the sun had risen,

  2141. they were scorched

2142. and because they had no root,

  2143. they withered away.

2144. And others fell among the thorns

2145. and the thorns came up

  2146. and choked them out

2147. and others fell on good soil

  2148. and yielded a crop

  2149. and some 100 fold,

  2150. 60,

  2151. or some 100 fold,

  2152. some 60,

  2153. some 30.

2154. He who has ears to hear,

  2155. let him hear.

  2156. Okay?

2157. So He tells the story,

  2158. He says,

  2159. Hey,

  2160. some seed fell upon

2161. the side of the road,

2162. some seed on the rocky soil,

2163. some seed in the midst

  2164. of thorns

2165. and some seed on good soil.

  2166. Then He explains it

  2167. in 18.

  2168. And He says,

  2169. Hear then the parable

  2170. of the sower.

  2171. When anyone hears

2172. the word of the kingdom

2173. and does not understand it,

  2174. the evil one comes

  2175. and snatches away

  2176. what has been sown

  2177. in his heart.

  2178. This is the one

  2179. on whom the seed

2180. was sown beside the road.

  2181. And the one

  2182. on whom the seed

  2183. was sown

  2184. in the rocky places,

  2185. this is the man

  2186. who hears the word

  2187. and immediately

  2188. receives it with joy.

2189. Yet He has no firm

  2190. root in Himself.

  2191. It is only temporary.

  2192. But when affliction

  2193. or persecution arises

  2194. because of the word,

  2195. immediately He falls away.

  2196. And the one

  2197. on whom the seed

  2198. was sown

  2199. among the thorns,

  2200. this is the man

  2201. who hears the word

2202. and the worry of the world

  2203. and the deceitfulness

  2204. of riches

  2205. choke the word

  2206. and it becomes

  2207. unfruitful.

  2208. And the one

  2209. on whom the seed

  2210. was sown

  2211. on the good soil,

  2212. this is the man

  2213. who hears the word

  2214. and understands it,

  2215. who indeed bears fruit,

2216. and some are bringing forth

  2217. some a hundredfold,

  2218. some sixty,

  2219. and some thirty.

2220. So you want to know

2221. if you have faith or not?

  2222. Test yourself

  2223. to this passage.

2224. Are you the kind of person

  2225. that it goes

  2226. in one ear

  2227. out the other?

  2228. You never really

  2229. even consider

  2230. the things

  2231. that you hear

  2232. in church?

  2233. Buildings?

  2234. Number two,

  2235. are you the kind

  2236. of person

  2237. that has

  2238. the seed

  2239. of the gospel,

  2240. the truth

  2241. about Christ

  2242. sown upon you?

  2243. You receive it

  2244. with joy

  2245. for a moment

  2246. at a New Year's

  2247. conference

  2248. or at a Thursday

  2249. night Bible study

  2250. or Sunday morning

  2251. church service.

  2252. You receive it

  2253. with joy

  2254. in a moment.

  2255. You feel convicted

  2256. the lights are dimmed

  2257. low and the candles

  2258. are lit

  2259. and the aroma

  2260. is nice

  2261. and the preacher

  2262. was hilarious.

  2263. And you receive it

  2264. with joy

  2265. and you're so happy

  2266. for a week and a half

  2267. and it's

  2268. ah,

  2269. Jesus isn't really

  2270. as exciting

  2271. as it used

  2272. to be.

  2273. You forget

  2274. about Jesus

  2275. and it withers

  2276. away.

  2277. Persecution

  2278. comes,

  2279. somebody approaches

  2280. you by your

  2281. faith,

  2282. the going

  2283. gets hard,

  2284. the road's

  2285. a little bit

  2286. rocky,

  2287. and you just

  2288. forget about it,

  2289. I'll deal

  2290. with it later.

  2291. That's not

  2292. faith.

  2293. Thirdly,

  2294. are you the kind

  2295. of person that

  2296. is the word of

  2297. God sown upon

  2298. you,

  2299. the seed of

  2300. Christ,

  2301. the gospel of

  2302. Christ comes

  2303. into your ear,

  2304. you hear it,

  2305. you receive it,

  2306. it springs up

  2307. for a time,

  2308. it looks like,

  2309. hey,

  2310. this is genuine

  2311. faith,

  2312. this guy,

  2313. we should bring

  2314. him into the

  2315. church.

  2316. Then all of a

  2317. sudden you see

  2318. this guy has

  2319. got a strange

  2320. interest in

  2321. riches,

  2322. and he just

  2323. cannot get away

  2324. from the pleasures

  2325. of the world,

  2326. and worldliness

  2327. just chokes

  2328. him out.

  2329. It's not true

  2330. faith either.

  2331. True faith,

  2332. when it comes

  2333. into your heart

  2334. and into your

  2335. mind,

  2336. takes root

  2337. and bears

  2338. true fruit.

  2339. Some 60,

  2340. some 30,

  2341. some 100,

  2342. but it bears

  2343. fruit.

  2344. And it

  2345. continues and

  2346. it persists.

  2347. And Jesus

  2348. says himself,

  2349. those that the

  2350. Father gives

  2351. me, I don't

  2352. lose them,

  2353. any of them.

  2354. If you're truly

  2355. his, he's not

  2356. going to lose

  2357. you.

  2358. That's a good

  2359. way to test

  2360. it.

  2361. So what a

  2362. salvation we

  2363. have.

  2364. Worthy is

  2365. the Lord

  2377. the doctor's

  2378. office, they

  2379. say, you

  2380. have cancer.

  2381. You say,

  2382. okay, you

  2383. come back,

  2384. right?

  2385. He says, I'm

  2386. going to cut

  2391. back up and

  2392. then send you

  2393. on your way.

  2394. It's going to

  2395. cost you $100,000.

  2396. And you say,

  2397. all right, fine,

  2398. I'll talk to my

  2401. you willingly get

  2402. stuck with the

  2406. you get cut

  2407. open, sliced

  2408. open, they

  2409. fool around

  2410. inside of you,

  2411. and then after a

  2412. few hours, you're

  2413. back out.

  2414. That's natural

  2415. faith.

  2416. I don't know,

  2417. I mean, I'm

  2435. of you a

  2436. supernatural faith

  2437. that you can't

  2438. conjure up.

  2440. faith.

  2441. Trusting

  2442. faith.

  2443. Faith.

  2445. patient.

  2446. That is

  2447. steadfast.
