  1. Have you ever had, I'm sure you have, just one of those mornings?

  2. I'm having, or have had, been having one of those mornings this morning.

  3. I kind of foolishly, last night, in order to stay up a bit later and study a bit more for this morning,

  4. drank Mountain Dew, thinking that'll help get my brain going.

  5. But I'm fairly worthless mentally after dinner.

  6. So all it really did is kept me up late.

  7. And I have a wife who's 20 weeks pregnant and needs her sleep.

  8. And so I sent her off to bed and I took my place on the couch last night and went to bed about midnight.

  9. Woke up at about 5.30 this morning and discovered that our puppy had made quite a mess of herself and our laundry room.

  10. So this morning I had to put a puppy in a bathtub and scrub lovely things off of her.

  11. My son is quite sick this morning.

  12. I have a 16-month-old at home, kind of wheezing and coughing and just has a nasty, nasty thing going on.

  13. I sort of threw on clothes this morning, in case you didn't notice.

  14. And I'll point out that I'm wearing Argyle socks with my plaid shirt.

  15. Because they were the socks in these shoes from the last time I wore them.

  16. It's been quite a morning for me.

  17. But I can say it is a privilege to be here with you this morning.

  18. I love being with God's people.

  19. And with all that going on and the chaos of this morning,

  20. it is so good to get to be here with you guys this morning.

  21. God has done a great work amongst us, calling together His church.

  22. And there is evidence of that in this room.

  23. So it's really, really good to be here.

  24. And I hope you feel the same.

  25. We're preaching a bit of time here,

  26. kind of on both the vision of Christ Family Church and how that plays itself out.

  27. And I mentioned last week the vision statement of our church,

  28. that Christ Family Church exists to experience, proclaim, and display the supremacy of Jesus Christ in all things.

  29. But how?

  30. How is it that we put wheels on that car?

  31. How is it that that engine drives us down the road?

  32. And we like to use a little analogy to kind of talk about the ministry of our church.

  33. And we use a tree both to talk about the life of our church and our Christian lives as individuals.

  34. When we talk about roots, branches, and fruit.

  35. The roots being that depth that we have, our knowledge of the Word of God,

  36. our theological database, so to speak.

  37. And we want to be both individuals and a group of people that put our roots down very deep.

  38. We want to suck out of the Word of God everything that there is for us in it

  39. because we believe the Word of God is inspired.

  40. That it is sufficient for our Christian living.

  41. And that all we need is found within it.

  42. I joked around with the guys last week that I think that God is probably thrifty enough

  43. that if all the words in this book were not inspired,

  44. He would have left some of them out so we could cut down on our printing costs as we produced it.

  45. I think every word in it is valuable for us, whether you always feel that or not.

  46. The branches are our exaltation of Christ, our proclamation of Him,

  47. the prayers that we lift up to Him, the songs that we sing together,

  48. and then the fruit is the fruit of love.

  49. Both to the church, the things that we do together to love on each other,

  50. and then our fruit to the world, our service and our evangelism to the world.

  51. So that's kind of our neat little analogy we like to use.

  52. And as I told you last week in my preparation, I was led to Hebrews chapter 10,

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  53. and I found contained within it this analogy, but not in quite as neat a form.

  54. So we're just going to preach through Hebrews chapter 10, verse 19 through 25.

    Hebrews 10:19–25

  55. So let's read that together, and then we'll pray.

  56. Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus,

  57. by the new and living way that He opened for us through the curtain, that is, through His flesh.

  58. And since we have a great priest over the house of God,

  59. let us draw near with a true heart and full assurance of faith,

  60. with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience,

  61. and our bodies washed with pure water.

  62. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering,

  63. for He who promised is faithful.

  64. Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,

  65. not neglecting to meet together as is the habit of some,

  66. but encouraging one another, and all the more, as you see today, drawing near.

  67. Let's pray together.

  68. Father, you are a good, loving God,

  69. and you have displayed this in the most magnificent way in the work of Christ

  70. and in the redemption of your church.

  71. We thank you for that this morning.

  72. We thank you for your word,

  73. and I pray, Father, this morning that my preparation or lack of,

  74. and your word and your spirit will collide this morning,

  75. that you will give us ears to hear and understand

  76. not only what the text means,

  77. but what the text means for us,

  78. for our lives.

  79. You'll bring conviction on us as a church and as individuals.

  80. Pray, Father, that you will have your way with us this morning.

  81. We pray this in Christ's name.

  82. Amen.

  83. Alright, so last week,

  84. we kind of narrowed in.

  85. We focused in on the beginning of verse 22,

  86. but to lead up to that,

  87. we've been granted access now to God.

  88. 19 through 21,

  89. because of the work of Christ,

  90. we've been given access to God.

  91. And then we're given three exhortations in the text,

  92. and they're all preceded by a little phrase,

  93. let us.

  94. So you see that, let us, let us, let us,

  95. which is where we're at.

  96. And last week, we began,

  97. the very beginning of verse 22,

  98. with a little phrase,

  99. let us draw near.

  100. To talk about Christian worship,

  101. when I say that carefully,

  102. hear me very carefully,

  103. we all worship all the time.

  104. Everything you do is an act of worship.

  105. What it is you worship

  106. is to be determined,

  107. but I'm talking about specifically Christian worship.

  108. I'm not talking about when you

  109. worship your car wrongly,

  110. or a relationship you may have,

  111. or how much money you have in the bank account.

  112. That's not what I'm discussing.

  113. I'm talking about Christian worship,

  114. and particularly corporate Christian worship,

  115. which is not just the singing of songs,

  116. certainly includes the singing of songs,

  117. but it's everything that we do together as believers.

  118. That's why we call this a worship service,

  119. which also includes the preaching of God's word.

  120. This is an act of worship.

  121. The listening to the preaching of God's word,

  122. the prayers we pray together,

  123. taking of the Lord's supper together,

  124. are all acts of worship.

  125. And so that's what verse 22 really addresses.

  126. And as I told you last week,

  127. that beginning phrase,

  128. let us draw near,

  129. is actually one word in the original,

  130. which I told you was proser kamai,

  131. and I was actually corrected.

  132. That's the root of the word,

  133. and I'm not even going to try to pronounce the actual word,

  134. but the root of the word is proser kamai,

  135. and we pulled out of that phrase

  136. three things we should learn,

  137. three things we should know as Christians

  138. about proper Christian worship.

  139. There's a lot of heat without light out there

  140. in the world around the idea of worship.

  141. Worship battles in churches,

  142. and many churches have split over this,

  143. primarily music.

  144. Some have accommodated all the crowds

  145. in order not to lose anybody.

  146. A large local church on their website

  147. advertises their services this way.

  148. They have three.

  149. A traditional blend of praise and worship.

  150. An inspiring and vibrant contemporary worship experience.

  151. Contemporary acoustic worship.

  152. Take your pick.

  153. Which one of these best suits you

  154. and your personality and your preference?

  155. Unfortunately, these preferences

  156. are primarily, almost always,

  157. predicated on opinion.

  158. It's very rare that you have these conversations with people,

  159. and they ever go to the scriptures at all.

  160. So I asked the question last week,

  161. who gets the final say?

  162. Who gets to determine how it is

  163. that we worship together?

  164. Is it us?

  165. Certainly not.

  166. It's God.

  167. The scriptures give us a lot of latitude about style.

  168. It's not that there is a particular style,

  169. a particular inspired liturgy that we must follow.

  170. But there are some particular,

  171. there are some things to do

  172. that are proper.

  173. It scares me that it's possible

  174. for us to worship the right God wrongly.

  175. That it's possible for us to even believe

  176. by what we're talking about this morning

  177. that we're doing it properly

  178. and be doing it wrongly.

  179. Matthew 15, 8 and 9,

  180. Jesus said,

  181. This people honors me with their lips,

  182. but their heart is far from me.

  183. In vain do they worship me.

  184. This is valuable for us.

  185. We pulled three points out last week.

  186. I'm going to repeat them for you,

  187. and we're going to move on

  188. and finish verse 22 this morning

  189. with the following three.

  190. So six points total

  191. if you're taking notes this morning.

  192. Point number one,

  193. Christian worship is

  194. corporate in emphasis.

  195. Let us draw near.

  196. Our hearts, our bodies.

  197. You can see this plural form

  198. running through the entire text.

  199. It's corporate in emphasis

  200. because God's character

  201. culminates in the work of Christ.

  202. I said this morning,

  203. You are the greatest thing

  204. that God has done.

  205. It's crazy, isn't it?

  206. We are a mess, aren't we?

  207. The action that's going on

  208. in your Christian life,

  209. the culmination of God's work,

  210. what is being accomplished in you

  211. because of Christ,

  212. it's incredible.

  213. The church,

  214. in all its disaster,

  215. is a great view of God's glory.

  216. So Christian worship

  217. is corporate in emphasis.

  218. Any expression of Christianity

  219. devoid of the church

  220. is totally foreign

  221. to the pages of Scripture.

  222. You remember last week

  223. the analogies were given,

  224. the metaphors

  225. that were a body made of parts,

  226. a household

  227. of family members,

  228. a temple

  229. built of living stones.

  230. We're not meant

  231. to exist apart from each other,

  232. but to coexist

  233. as a community

  234. of Christians.

  235. Psalm 22,

  236. the psalmist writes,

  237. I will tell of your name

  238. to my brothers

  239. in the midst

  240. of the congregation.

  241. I will praise you.

  242. The second point

  243. was Christian worship is

  244. frequent in occurrence.

  245. That term,

  246. that original Greek term

  247. was present and active,

  248. both that we should

  249. be drawing near to God

  250. both now

  251. and continually.

  252. Forever.

  253. Enjoy Him forever.

  254. The New Testament

  255. does not command

  256. a particular frequency.

  257. I think asking

  258. how often

  259. should we meet together

  260. is really the wrong question.

  261. I think we ought to

  262. want to meet together

  263. all the time.

  264. Christian worship is,

  265. number three,

  266. thoroughly preoccupied

  267. !

  268. with God.

  269. Thoroughly preoccupied

  270. !

  271. with God.

  272. It's His approval

  273. that we seek.

  274. His applause.

  275. Our worship services

  276. are for Him.

  277. Brothers,

  278. we need to be careful

  279. that we don't become

  280. worshipers of ourselves

  281. when we come into this place

  282. looking to meet

  283. our needs.

  284. We're here to worship God.

  285. We're the beneficiaries

  286. of what happens

  287. as a result.

  288. So when you leave here

  289. this morning,

  290. you ought not to ask,

  291. what did I get out

  292. of this morning?

  293. But was God pleased

  294. with my participation?

  295. So number one,

  296. corporate an emphasis.

  297. Two,

  298. frequent an occurrence.

  299. Three,

  300. thoroughly preoccupied

  301. with God.

  302. This brings us

  303. to our new point.

  304. Number four,

  305. Christian worship

  306. includes all

  307. of our being.

  308. Includes all

  309. of our being.

  310. We get this from

  311. this little phrase

  312. with a true heart.

  313. Let us draw near

  314. with a true heart.

  315. Christianity

  316. is a religion

  317. of the heart.

  318. And you ask,

  319. well,

  320. then what is the heart?

  321. Are we talking about

  322. the muscle that pumps

  323. blood throughout my body?

  324. Absolutely not.

  325. That's not what Scripture

  326. means when it refers

  327. to the heart.

  328. The heart is the

  329. center of who we are,

  330. the place where

  331. our personality

  332. and emotions lie.

  333. Essentially,

  334. the whole

  335. of our interior life.

  336. God is not

  337. primarily concerned

  338. with our outward actions.

  339. Do they matter?

  340. Are some of them

  341. prescribed?

  342. Yes.

  343. But He's not

  344. primarily concerned

  345. with our outward actions.

  346. As we've said,

  347. you can do all

  348. the right things

  349. wrongly.

  350. He's primarily

  351. concerned

  352. with

  353. our hearts.

  354. We all tend to know,

  355. we're all kind of

  356. Christianized

  357. in this culture.

  358. Don't we?

  359. A lot of Christianity

  360. around us.

  361. And you kind of

  362. know the scene.

  363. How many friends

  364. do you even have

  365. that went through

  366. all the motions

  367. before they actually

  368. were Christians?

  369. Before they actually

  370. had regenerate hearts?

  371. They went through

  372. all the actions.

  373. We know exactly

  374. what we're supposed

  375. to do.

  376. We follow every cue

  377. to a T.

  378. When the crescendo

  379. comes in the song,

  380. right,

  381. what happens?

  382. Close your eyes.

  383. Raise your hands.

  384. It's the right moment

  385. to do that type of thing.

  386. If it's not,

  387. you always sing

  388. standing up.

  389. We always sit

  390. for preaching.

  391. We know when.

  392. We know.

  393. And it feels awkward

  394. if nobody tells you

  395. what to do.

  396. You're like,

  397. I'm not sure.

  398. I think we're supposed

  399. to stand right now,

  400. but I'm not really sure.

  401. I can't even listen

  402. to the first verse

  403. of this song

  404. because I'm just not sure

  405. if I should stand up

  406. or sit down.

  407. It's very frustrating to me.

  408. We can do the right things

  409. with the wrong heart.

  410. It frightens me a lot.

  411. A lot.

  412. Turn to Isaiah chapter 1.

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  413. See what God has to say

  414. about this.

  415. Isaiah chapter 1.

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  416. We'll read 11 through 16

  417. to you.

  418. It's God speaking.

  419. What to me

  420. is the multitude

  421. of your sacrifices,

  422. says the Lord.

  423. I have had enough

  424. of burnt offerings,

  425. of rams,

  426. and the fat

  427. of well-fed beef.

  428. I do not delight

  429. in the blood of bulls

  430. or of lambs

  431. or of goats.

  432. Let's pause here.

  433. These were prescribed things.

  434. These were things

  435. that God had asked

  436. Israel to do.

  437. But he's saying,

  438. I'm sick of them.

  439. I have grown weary

  440. of these things.

  441. Verse 12.

  442. When you come to appear

  443. before me,

  444. who has required of you

  445. this trampling of my courts?

  446. Bring no more vain offerings.

  447. Incense is an abomination to me.

  448. New moon and Sabbath

  449. and the calling of convocations.

  450. I cannot endure iniquity

  451. and solemn assembly.

  452. Your new moons

  453. and your appointed feasts

  454. my soul hates.

  455. They have become

  456. a burden to me.

  457. I am weary

  458. of bearing them.

  459. When you spread out

  460. your hands,

  461. I will hide my eyes

  462. from you.

  463. Even though you make

  464. many prayers,

  465. I will not listen.

  466. Your hands

  467. are full of blood.

  468. Wash yourselves.

  469. Make yourselves clean.

  470. Let's stop there.

  471. Christianity is a religion

  472. of the heart.

  473. These are all things

  474. that have an ass

  475. of Israel to do.

  476. And God says,

  477. they have become

  478. a burden to me.

  479. Is our worship together

  480. a burden to God?

  481. I hope not.

  482. I hope not.

  483. Recall Simon the magician

  484. in Acts chapter 8

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  485. went to Peter

  486. and tried to purchase

  487. the Holy Spirit

  488. from him.

  489. He already was a bit

  490. of a miracle worker

  491. himself.

  492. And he saw this

  493. spirit and dwelling

  494. of Christians

  495. and they were

  496. healing people

  497. and he said,

  498. ah, it's a better power

  499. than I have now.

  500. I'd like it.

  501. And he tried to purchase it

  502. and Peter's response

  503. to him was,

  504. you have neither part

  505. nor lot in this matter

  506. for your heart

  507. is not right

  508. before God.

  509. So I'll say to you again,

  510. Christianity

  511. is a religion

  512. of the heart.

  513. John Chrysostom said,

  514. find the door

  515. to your heart

  516. and you will discover

  517. it is the door

  518. to the kingdom of God.

  519. In Deuteronomy 4.29

  520. God says,

  521. from there you will

  522. seek the Lord your God

  523. and you will find him

  524. if you search after him

  525. with all your heart.

  526. It's not all about

  527. the outward appearance.

  528. Those things matter.

  529. But I'm just afraid

  530. that we lose sight

  531. of what really matters.

  532. It comes about

  533. the outward appearance

  534. and not about

  535. our hearts.

  536. Many Christians

  537. put on airs

  538. on Sunday morning.

  539. I'm thankful

  540. that we're not a church

  541. where I feel

  542. pressured to wear a suit

  543. to preach in.

  544. I know I look pitiful

  545. this morning.

  546. That outward appearance

  547. is so important

  548. to so many of us.

  549. What did Jesus call

  550. the Pharisees

  551. as they acted like that?

  552. Whitewashed tombs.

  553. Isn't that language?

  554. That strong language?

  555. You were like

  556. whitewashed tombs

  557. is what he said to them.

  558. Somebody has

  559. on the outside

  560. made you look

  561. very nice.

  562. They have come along

  563. and painted you up

  564. clean and white.

  565. Tomb carved into the rock.

  566. But inside

  567. you were full

  568. of dead people's bones.

  569. What's on the outside

  570. is nothing

  571. like what's on the inside.

  572. Christianity

  573. is a religion

  574. of the heart.

  575. The Psalms are

  576. filled

  577. with language

  578. of the heart.

  579. Where the outworking

  580. of a heart

  581. worshipping God

  582. rightly

  583. is joy.

  584. I don't have time

  585. this morning

  586. to take you on

  587. a survey

  588. through the Psalms.

  589. But I would invite you

  590. to read them

  591. looking for those

  592. types of things.

  593. The outward working

  594. of a heart

  595. worshipping God

  596. properly

  597. is joy.

  598. Joy that expresses

  599. itself

  600. visibly.

  601. We're Baptists.

  602. We tend to express

  603. ourselves

  604. visibly

  605. too often

  606. in our

  607. meetings together.

  608. Do we?

  609. There's

  610. dancing

  611. in the Psalms.

  612. There's

  613. standing

  614. and lifting

  615. of hands.

  616. There's

  617. kneeling.

  618. There's lying

  619. prostrate

  620. on the ground.

  621. There's actual

  622. physical

  623. action

  624. that comes

  625. out of

  626. proper hearts.

  627. C.S. Lewis

  628. said that in the Psalms

  629. God is set

  630. on display

  631. as the

  632. all-satisfying

  633. object.

  634. Psalm 1611

  635. David wrote

  636. In your presence

  637. there is fullness

  638. of joy.

  639. At your right hand

  640. are pleasures

  641. forevermore.

  642. In Psalm 33

  643. 1

  644. the psalmist

  645. says

  646. Shout for joy

  647. in the Lord

  648. O you righteous.

  649. Praise

  650. befits

  651. the upright.

  652. The upright

  653. ought to praise

  654. God

  655. is what he's saying.

  656. Those who are

  657. righteous

  658. because of

  659. Christ

  660. will praise

  661. God's name

  662. joyfully.

  663. Joy is an

  664. expressive

  665. thing.

  666. Is it not?

  667. Some of you people

  668. look dead

  669. when you sing

  670. songs.

  671. It's expressive.

  672. It's easy to look

  673. at somebody and say

  674. they have no joy

  675. in their heart.

  676. Isn't it?

  677. People would say

  678. that of us

  679. when we're

  680. praising our God.

  681. 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 6 chapter mention

  682. chapter 6

  683. I think

  684. displays this

  685. rather well.

  686. If you recall

  687. the story

  688. David

  689. is now

  690. king

  691. his issues

  692. with Saul

  693. have been

  694. laid to rest

  695. at this point

  696. and he

  697. decides to

  698. bring the

  699. Ark of the

  700. Covenant

  701. back

  702. to Jerusalem.

  703. It's been

  704. living

  705. the Ark

  706. has

  707. at the

  708. house

  709. of Abinadab

  710. and then

  711. there's

  712. this little

  713. transport

  714. that goes

  715. on

  716. if you

  717. recall

  718. and

  719. there's

  720. a little

  721. stumble

  722. as they're

  723. carrying

  724. the Ark

  725. and one

  726. of the

  727. bears

  728. of the Ark

  729. reaches out

  730. and touches

  731. it to catch

  732. it and

  733. God gets

  734. upset at him

  735. and kills

  736. him and so

  737. David says

  738. maybe we

  739. shouldn't bring

  740. that thing

  741. home just

  742. yet.

  743. And so

  744. it then

  745. lives at the

  746. house of

  747. Obed-Adam

  748. for three

  749. months and

  750. God blesses

  751. him richly

  752. for housing

  753. it there

  754. and so

  755. David decides

  756. okay let's

  757. bring it on

  758. to Jerusalem

  759. now.

  760. In

  761. verse 14

  762. says

  763. and David

  764. danced

  765. before the

  766. Lord

  767. with all

  768. his might

  769. danced

  770. before the

  771. Lord

  772. with all

  773. his might

  774. and you

  775. recall that

  776. David was

  777. married to

  778. Michal

  779. which was

  780. Saul's

  781. daughter

  782. and she

  783. saw him

  784. from the

  785. window

  786. and the text

  787. says that she

  788. despised him

  789. with all her

  790. heart

  791. because she

  792. felt that he

  793. was disgracing

  794. himself

  795. I didn't

  796. mention that he

  797. was pretty much

  798. dancing in his

  799. underwear

  800. but danced

  801. with all

  802. his might

  803. and she

  804. confronts

  805. him

  806. and if

  807. you'll

  808. allow me

  809. a paraphrase

  810. his response

  811. to her

  812. is she

  813. says to

  814. him

  815. you have

  816. disgraced

  817. your position

  818. you were

  819. the king

  820. of Israel

  821. and you're

  822. dancing in

  823. your underwear

  824. in front of

  825. the ark

  826. it's disgraceful

  827. and his

  828. response to

  829. her

  830. in my

  831. own

  832. paraphrase

  833. form

  834. is

  835. I was

  836. holding

  837. back

  838. you thought

  839. that was

  840. disgraceful

  841. I was

  842. holding

  843. back

  844. I will

  845. become

  846. even more

  847. foolish

  848. if it means

  849. that my

  850. God will

  851. receive more

  852. glory

  853. you ought to

  854. be joyful

  855. in this

  856. place

  857. expressive

  858. as a result

  859. why

  860. because our

  861. God deserves

  862. it

  863. I don't

  864. really care

  865. how you

  866. feel

  867. you want to

  868. dance a little

  869. bit

  870. or raise

  871. your hands

  872. and you

  873. think that's

  874. embarrassing

  875. to you

  876. what have you

  877. become

  878. a worshipper

  879. of you

  880. not a worshipper

  881. of our

  882. God

  883. do you

  884. realize

  885. what God

  886. has done

  887. for us

  888. we take

  889. our sins

  890. so

  891. lightly

  892. most of

  893. us

  894. probably

  895. grew up

  896. as fairly

  897. moral

  898. people

  899. probably

  900. in Christian

  901. homes

  902. and haven't

  903. done anything

  904. really

  905. big

  906. in our

  907. own

  908. eyes

  909. big

  910. sin

  911. kind

  912. of

  913. things

  914. any

  915. sin

  916. is a

  917. great

  918. affront

  919. to God

  920. anything

  921. you have

  922. done

  923. you are

  924. an

  925. enemy

  926. of God

  927. before

  928. Christ

  929. set

  930. entirely

  931. against

  932. him

  933. your

  934. sin

  935. is

  936. great

  937. it

  938. does

  939. not

  940. matter

  941. what

  942. you

  943. think

  944. of

  945. it

  946. God

  947. says

  948. your

  949. sin

  950. is

  951. great

  952. and

  953. as

  954. such

  955. we

  956. have

  957. a

  958. great

  959. savior

  960. there's

  961. joy

  962. joy

  963. in

  964. that

  965. David

  966. danced

  967. for a

  968. reason

  969. he was

  970. celebrating

  971. all

  972. that God

  973. had done

  974. for him

  975. and for

  976. the people

  977. of Israel

  978. so

  979. Christianity

  980. is a

  981. religion

  982. of the

  983. heart

  984. the way

  985. to the

  986. heart

  987. is

  988. through

  989. the head

  990. the way

  991. to the

  992. heart

  993. is to

  994. the head

  995. Psalm

  996. 51

  997. David

  998. wrote

  999. behold

  1000. you

  1001. delight

  1002. in

  1003. truth

  1004. in

  1005. the

  1006. inward

  1007. being

  1008. and

  1009. you

  1010. teach

  1011. me

  1012. wisdom

  1013. in

  1014. the

  1015. secret

  1016. heart

  1017. one of

  1018. my

  1019. favorite

  1020. preachers

  1021. Arturo

  1022. Azuria

  1023. I call

  1024. him

  1025. Pastor

  1026. Art

  1027. to keep

  1028. it

  1029. simple

  1030. said

  1031. God

  1032. does

  1033. not

  1034. desire

  1035. empty

  1036. headed

  1037. emotionalism

  1038. neither

  1039. does

  1040. he

  1041. desire

  1042. empty

  1043. hearted

  1044. intellectualism

  1045. there's

  1046. a

  1047. balance

  1048. there

  1049. proper

  1050. Christian

  1051. worship

  1052. is a

  1053. marriage

  1054. of the

  1055. two

  1056. so as

  1057. I say

  1058. to you

  1059. our

  1060. time

  1061. together

  1062. our

  1063. worship

  1064. together

  1065. ought to

  1066. be

  1067. expressive

  1068. in

  1069. joy

  1070. it ought

  1071. to be

  1072. expressive

  1073. for a

  1074. reason

  1075. not just

  1076. because

  1077. we're

  1078. crazy

  1079. and we

  1080. have

  1081. an

  1082. experience

  1083. but as

  1084. it's

  1085. rooted

  1086. in

  1087. truth

  1088. the

  1089. value

  1090. of our

  1091. worship

  1092. can be

  1093. filtered

  1094. by the

  1095. truth

  1096. that

  1097. supports

  1098. it

  1099. we're

  1100. going to

  1101. talk about

  1102. this

  1103. more

  1104. next

  1105. week

  1106. the

  1107. value

  1108. of our

  1109. Christian

  1110. worship

  1111. the

  1112. legitimacy

  1113. of it

  1114. can be

  1115. measured

  1116. by the

  1117. truth

  1118. that

  1119. spawns

  1120. it

  1121. that

  1122. creates

  1123. it

  1124. that's

  1125. why we

  1126. preached

  1127. you

  1128. expositionally

  1129. that is

  1130. why it's

  1131. my great

  1132. burden

  1133. to just

  1134. teach you

  1135. what the

  1136. text

  1137. says

  1138. I believe

  1139. that's

  1140. enough

  1141. I'm

  1142. fairly

  1143. young

  1144. I don't

  1145. have

  1146. lots

  1147. of

  1148. life

  1149. experience

  1150. to share

  1151. with you

  1152. anyway

  1153. but even

  1154. if I

  1155. did

  1156. I don't

  1157. really

  1158. think

  1159. you need

  1160. to know

  1161. about

  1162. my

  1163. steps

  1164. to

  1165. success

  1166. I don't

  1167. think

  1168. how I

  1169. arrange

  1170. my

  1171. finances

  1172. are all

  1173. that

  1174. important

  1175. to you

  1176. as a

  1177. people

  1178. the

  1179. three

  1180. steps

  1181. to

  1182. having

  1183. a

  1184. healthier

  1185. marriage

  1186. of my

  1187. life

  1188. but what

  1189. the Bible

  1190. says on

  1191. those

  1192. topics

  1193. is

  1194. incredibly

  1195. important

  1196. to you

  1197. what

  1198. God

  1199. has

  1200. already

  1201. pinned

  1202. for us

  1203. is what

  1204. matters

  1205. most

  1206. and anything

  1207. I say

  1208. that's not

  1209. just an

  1210. explanation

  1211. just a

  1212. clearer

  1213. view

  1214. of what

  1215. these

  1216. words

  1217. are

  1218. teaching

  1219. us

  1220. is

  1221. totally

  1222. erroneous

  1223. you gotta

  1224. just dismiss

  1225. it

  1226. and forget

  1227. about it

  1228. altogether

  1229. John

    John 4 chapter mention

  1230. chapter 4

  1231. Jesus

  1232. says that

  1233. God

  1234. is seeking

  1235. those

  1236. who

  1237. will

  1238. worship

  1239. him

  1240. in

  1241. spirit

  1242. and

  1243. in

  1244. truth

  1245. spirit

  1246. being

  1247. our

  1248. spirits

  1249. brought

  1250. into a

  1251. right

  1252. relationship

  1253. into life

  1254. by the

  1255. Holy Spirit

  1256. and in

  1257. truth

  1258. which is

  1259. who

  1260. Jesus

  1261. Christ

  1262. God's

  1263. expression

  1264. of himself

  1265. through the

  1266. work

  1267. of Jesus

  1268. Christ

  1269. so we

  1270. get in

  1271. this

  1272. text

  1273. both

  1274. the

  1275. whom

  1276. and

  1277. the

  1278. how

  1279. of

  1280. Christian

  1281. worship

  1282. so we

  1283. are

  1284. directed

  1285. by the

  1286. text

  1287. to draw

  1288. near

  1289. to God

  1290. who

  1291. has

  1292. revealed

  1293. himself

  1294. in

  1295. Jesus

  1296. Christ

  1297. with

  1298. hearts

  1299. that

  1300. are

  1301. engaged

  1302. God

  1303. wants

  1304. all of

  1305. us

  1306. a full

  1307. head

  1308. and a

  1309. warm

  1310. heart

  1311. let us

  1312. draw near

  1313. with a

  1314. true

  1315. heart

  1316. another

  1317. way

  1318. of

  1319. saying

  1320. this

  1321. some

  1322. of your

  1323. translations

  1324. may say

  1325. with a

  1326. sincere

  1327. heart

  1328. word

  1329. sincere

  1330. is a

  1331. very

  1332. interesting

  1333. word

  1334. again

  1335. with

  1336. the

  1337. guys

  1338. last

  1339. week

  1340. and

  1341. we

  1342. actually

  1343. talked

  1344. about

  1345. this

  1346. term

  1347. out of

  1348. first

  1349. timothy

  1350. the

  1351. english

  1352. word

  1353. sincere

  1354. comes

  1355. from

  1356. two

  1357. latin

  1358. words

  1359. sine

  1360. sera

  1361. it's

  1362. interesting

  1363. to know

  1364. the story

  1365. behind

  1366. these

  1367. words

  1368. and how

  1369. it is

  1370. that

  1371. they

  1372. got

  1373. put

  1375. and

  1377. actually

  1378. added

  1379. a bit

  1380. to my

  1381. knowledge

  1382. this

  1383. week

  1384. in

  1385. roman

  1386. times

  1387. when a

  1388. pot

  1389. was

  1390. created

  1391. if you've

  1392. ever been

  1393. in pottery

  1394. class

  1395. you know

  1396. that when

  1397. you put

  1398. the pot

  1399. in the

  1400. kiln

  1401. to be

  1402. fired

  1403. there's

  1404. a chance

  1405. that it'll

  1406. crack

  1407. i don't

  1408. know if

  1409. you've

  1410. experienced

  1411. that but

  1412. i took

  1413. some art

  1414. classes

  1415. in high

  1416. school

  1417. and was

  1418. very

  1419. distraught

  1420. that i

  1421. had to

  1422. redo

  1423. some

  1424. of my

  1425. projects

  1426. because

  1427. pots

  1428. cracked

  1429. well

  1430. in this

  1431. time

  1432. in order

  1433. to continue

  1434. to use

  1435. these pots

  1436. they would

  1437. fill

  1438. those

  1439. cracks

  1440. with

  1441. wax

  1442. so

  1443. this

  1444. vessel

  1445. that was

  1446. created

  1447. for use

  1448. would

  1449. have

  1450. a flaw

  1451. in it

  1452. and they

  1453. would

  1454. just

  1455. fill

  1456. it up

  1457. with

  1458. wax

  1459. because

  1460. it

  1461. would

  1462. still

  1463. hold

  1464. liquid

  1465. that way

  1466. if a

  1467. pot

  1468. was a

  1469. perfect

  1470. pot

  1471. a pot

  1472. that

  1473. didn't

  1474. have

  1475. any

  1476. cracks

  1477. in it

  1478. it

  1479. was

  1480. stamped

  1481. on

  1482. the

  1483. bottom

  1484. sine

  1485. sera

  1486. which

  1487. meant

  1488. literally

  1489. the

  1490. terms

  1491. mean

  1492. without

  1493. wax

  1494. a

  1495. perfect

  1496. object

  1497. a perfect

  1498. vessel

  1499. a

  1500. complete

  1501. heart

  1502. is what's

  1503. being said

  1504. here

  1505. all

  1506. of who

  1507. we are

  1508. sine

  1509. sera

  1510. to add

  1511. to that

  1512. I

  1513. got on a

  1514. site that

  1515. was debating

  1516. the origin

  1517. of the

  1518. term

  1519. I think

  1520. they were

  1521. wrong on

  1522. both

  1523. accounts

  1524. I think

  1525. that the

  1526. pot

  1527. thing

  1528. is

  1529. perfectly

  1530. fine

  1531. but

  1532. they

  1533. also

  1534. said

  1535. that

  1536. those

  1537. who

  1538. sculpted

  1539. in

  1540. marble

  1541. would

  1542. often

  1543. fill

  1544. the

  1545. cracks

  1546. the

  1547. mistakes

  1548. they

  1549. had

  1550. made

  1551. with

  1552. wax

  1553. and so

  1554. then

  1555. the

  1556. marble

  1557. statue

  1558. as it

  1559. was

  1560. put

  1561. outside

  1562. would

  1563. have

  1564. flaws

  1565. as the

  1566. hot

  1567. sun

  1568. began

  1569. to melt

  1570. the wax

  1571. out of

  1572. that

  1573. statue

  1574. and also

  1575. they

  1576. postulated

  1577. that

  1578. some

  1579. brick

  1580. added to

  1581. the brick

  1582. was wax

  1583. what happens

  1584. to a brick

  1585. as the wax

  1586. melts on a

  1587. building

  1588. the building

  1589. loses some

  1590. of its

  1591. structure

  1592. so pick

  1593. whichever one

  1594. you like

  1595. I like the

  1596. pot one

  1597. the best

  1598. that's the

  1599. origin of

  1600. that term

  1601. so a

  1602. perfect

  1603. heart

  1604. a

  1605. complete

  1606. heart

  1607. Psalm

  1608. 9

  1609. 1

  1610. kind of

  1611. marries

  1612. these

  1613. together

  1614. as we

  1615. conclude

  1616. point 4

  1617. Psalmist

  1618. writes

  1619. I will

  1620. give

  1621. thanks to

  1622. the

  1623. Lord

  1624. with

  1625. my

  1626. whole

  1627. heart

  1628. I will

  1629. recount

  1630. all

  1631. of your

  1632. wonderful

  1633. deeds

  1634. heart

  1635. and truth

  1636. combined

  1637. in one

  1638. so let us

  1639. draw near

  1640. with a

  1641. true

  1642. heart

  1643. number

  1644. five

  1645. Christian

  1646. worship

  1647. is

  1648. characterized

  1649. by

  1650. confidence

  1651. let us

  1652. draw near

  1653. with a

  1654. true

  1655. heart

  1656. in

  1657. full

  1658. assurance

  1659. of

  1660. faith

  1661. full

  1662. assurance

  1663. of

  1664. faith

  1665. I'll

  1666. draw your

  1667. attention

  1668. back to

  1669. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:19

  1670. chapter 10

  1671. verse 19

  1672. where he

  1673. says

  1674. therefore

  1675. brothers

  1676. since we

  1677. have

  1678. confidence

  1679. to enter

  1680. the holy

  1681. places

  1682. in either

  1683. the

  1684. tabernacle

  1685. or the

  1686. temple

  1687. depending on

  1688. where we

  1689. are

  1690. in history

  1691. there was

  1692. a place

  1693. called

  1694. the

  1695. holy

  1696. of

  1697. holies

  1698. and it

  1699. was

  1700. divided

  1701. by a

  1702. great

  1703. curtain

  1704. a veil

  1705. and one

  1706. time a

  1707. year

  1708. through

  1709. great

  1710. amounts

  1711. of

  1712. ceremony

  1713. one

  1714. man

  1715. was able

  1716. to enter

  1717. into

  1718. the

  1719. holy

  1720. of

  1721. holies

  1722. into

  1723. the

  1724. presence

  1725. of

  1726. God

  1727. and I

  1728. explained

  1729. to you

  1730. last

  1731. week

  1732. that

  1733. this

  1734. man

  1735. would

  1736. have

  1737. sewn

  1738. bells

  1739. into

  1740. his

  1741. robes

  1742. and

  1743. tied

  1744. a

  1745. rope

  1746. around

  1747. his

  1748. ankle

  1749. just

  1750. in

  1751. case

  1752. he

  1753. messed

  1754. something

  1755. up

  1756. if they

  1757. stopped

  1758. hearing him

  1759. move

  1760. inside

  1761. probably

  1762. meant

  1763. that

  1764. God

  1765. had

  1766. struck

  1767. him

  1768. dead

  1769. and

  1770. they

  1771. could

  1772. drag

  1773. him

  1774. out

  1775. of

  1776. the

  1777. holy

  1778. of

  1779. holies

  1780. even

  1781. the

  1782. great

  1783. high

  1784. priest

  1785. did

  1786. not

  1787. enter

  1788. into

  1789. the

  1790. presence

  1791. of

  1792. God

  1793. with

  1794. confidence

  1795. !

  1796. I

  1797. have

  1798. no

  1799. Levitical

  1800. line

  1801. I

  1802. can

  1803. guarantee

  1804. you

  1805. I

  1806. am

  1807. a

  1808. tent

  1809. of

  1810. a

  1811. man

  1812. that

  1813. these

  1814. high

  1815. priests

  1816. were

  1817. and

  1818. I

  1819. have

  1820. confident

  1821. access

  1822. not

  1823. just

  1824. access

  1825. but

  1826. confident

  1827. access

  1828. to

  1829. approach

  1830. God

  1831. there

  1832. was

  1833. lots

  1834. of

  1835. blood

  1836. shed

  1837. throughout

  1838. the

  1839. Old

  1840. Testament

  1841. but

  1842. none

  1843. of

  1844. it

  1845. granted

  1846. access

  1847. to

  1848. God

  1849. to

  1850. the

  1851. individual

  1852. if you

  1853. look

  1854. back

  1855. Hebrews

    Hebrews 9:22

  1856. chapter

  1857. 9

  1858. verse

  1859. 22

  1860. writer

  1861. says

  1862. indeed

  1863. under

  1864. the

  1865. law

  1866. almost

  1867. everything

  1868. is

  1869. purified

  1870. with

  1871. blood

  1872. and

  1873. without

  1874. the

  1875. shedding

  1876. of

  1877. blood

  1878. there

  1879. is

  1880. no

  1881. forgiveness

  1882. of

  1883. sins

  1884. so

  1885. the

  1886. law

  1887. made

  1888. some

  1889. allowance

  1890. for

  1891. sin

  1892. but

  1893. blood

  1894. must

  1895. be

  1896. shed

  1897. in

  1898. order

  1899. to

  1900. forgive

  1901. it

  1902. but

  1903. the

  1904. bloodshed

  1905. of

  1906. animals

  1907. didn't

  1908. give

  1909. us

  1910. access

  1911. to

  1912. God

  1913. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:3

  1914. chapter

  1915. 10

  1916. verse

  1917. 3

  1918. he

  1919. elaborates

  1920. on

  1921. that

  1922. and

  1923. he

  1924. says

  1925. but

  1926. in

  1927. these

  1928. sacrifices

  1929. there

  1930. is

  1931. a

  1932. reminder

  1933. of

  1934. sins

  1935. every

  1936. year

  1937. for

  1938. it

  1939. is

  1940. impossible

  1941. for

  1942. the

  1943. blood

  1944. of

  1945. bulls

  1946. and

  1947. goats

  1948. to

  1949. take

  1950. away

  1951. sins

  1952. so

  1953. the

  1954. sacrifice

  1955. actually

  1956. only

  1957. kept

  1958. them

  1959. mindful

  1960. of

  1961. their

  1962. sin

  1963. now

  1964. we

  1965. get to

  1966. enter

  1967. with

  1968. boldness

  1969. and

  1970. why

  1971. because

  1972. of

  1973. the

  1974. blood

  1975. of

  1976. Christ

  1977. Hebrews

  1978. 4

  1979. 16

  1980. says

  1981. let us

  1982. then

  1983. with

  1984. confidence

  1985. draw

  1986. near

  1987. to

  1988. the

  1989. throne

  1990. of

  1991. grace

  1992. that

  1993. we

  1994. may

  1995. receive

  1996. mercy

  1997. and

  1998. find

  1999. grace

  2000. to

  2001. help

  2002. in

  2003. time

  2004. of

  2005. need

  2006. what

  2007. do

  2008. we

  2009. get

  2010. when

  2011. we

  2012. draw

  2013. near

  2014. what

  2015. is

  2016. it

  2017. that

  2018. we're

  2019. going

  2020. in

  2021. for

  2022. mercy

  2023. and

  2024. grace

  2025. not

  2026. justice

  2027. but

  2028. they

  2029. think

  2030. God

  2031. is a

  2032. just

  2033. God

  2034. he

  2035. absolutely

  2036. is

  2037. what

  2038. has

  2039. happened

  2040. to

  2041. God's

  2042. justice

  2043. on

  2044. our

  2045. behalf

  2046. given

  2047. to

  2048. Christ

  2049. Jesus

  2050. Christ

  2051. bore

  2052. the

  2053. wrath

  2054. of

  2055. God

  2056. for

  2057. us

  2058. the

  2059. due

  2060. penalty

  2061. of

  2062. our

  2063. sin

  2064. in

  2065. verse

  2066. 20

  2067. you'll

  2068. see that

  2069. we now

  2070. have a

  2071. new and

  2072. living way

  2073. a confidence

2074. to enter into the holy places

2075. by the blood of Jesus

  2076. by the new

  2077. and living way

  2078. and this term new

  2079. is really

  2080. rich

  2081. not the typical

  2082. Greek term used

  2083. for new

  2084. throughout the New Testament

2085. it's kind of an abnormal

  2086. one

  2087. kind of a rare

  2088. term

  2089. used

2090. I'm not going to try to pronounce it

  2091. this morning

2092. it's one of those mornings

  2093. right

  2094. the word means

  2095. freshly

  2096. as in

  2097. freshly

  2098. slaughtered

  2099. not the typical

  2100. simple

  2101. new

  2102. but through a

  2103. freshly

  2104. slaughtered

  2105. and living

  2106. way

  2107. that sacrifice

  2108. has been made

  2109. once and for all

  2110. and it's still

  2111. that new

  2112. and living way

  2113. it's as if

  2114. that perfect sacrifice

  2115. has been made

  2116. right now

  2117. in this moment

2118. and now I can confidently

  2119. enter in

2120. to the presence of God

  2121. and approach him

  2122. for mercy

  2123. and grace

  2124. because

  2125. of this new

  2126. and living

  2127. way

  2128. this sacrifice

  2129. that has been made

  2130. on my behalf

2131. that was a perfect sacrifice

  2132. isn't that rich

  2133. Saturday morning

2134. I woke up to another mess

  2135. with the dog

  2136. yes

  2137. you heard me right

  2138. another mess

  2139. with the dog

2140. it was a bit more tragic

2141. I'll spare you the details of it

2142. but my very brave wife

  2143. ventured in

  2144. in her socks

  2145. and

2146. and did quite a bit of cleaning

  2147. and after the fact

  2148. as her last

  2149. mode of escape

  2150. she

  2151. took off her socks

  2152. inside out

  2153. and tossed them

  2154. on the outside

2155. of the laundry room door

  2156. where

  2157. my son

  2158. came and proceeded

2159. to go and pick one up

  2160. and as a

  2161. father noticing this

  2162. I freaked

  2163. probably overreacted a bit

  2164. and yelled at him

  2165. did like

  2166. the game

  2167. no

  2168. and

  2169. he dropped the sock

  2170. and

2171. stuck his little lip out

2172. and began to tear up

  2173. and

  2174. all at once

  2175. in this

  2176. little moment

  2177. I

  2178. as I'm

  2179. mulling over this text

  2180. in my head

  2181. I thought about

  2182. the wrath of God

  2183. he didn't really know

  2184. what he was doing

  2185. obviously

  2186. but

2187. but if that were me

  2188. the sins

  2189. the things I've

  2190. committed against God

  2191. his wrath

  2192. I mean

  2193. it was an overreaction

  2194. and

  2195. poor little guy

  2196. ran away from me

  2197. but I squatted down

2198. and I opened up my arms

  2199. and I said

  2200. Cain

  2201. come here

2202. and it was so cute

  2203. he turned around

  2204. a little pouty

2205. and held out his arms

  2206. like this

  2207. and ran

  2208. back to me

  2209. and

  2210. and just

  2211. in a culmination

  2212. of all those ideas

  2213. I thought

  2214. that's the kind of

  2215. confidence we have

  2216. isn't it

  2217. to cry to God

  2218. Abba Father

  2219. Daddy

  2220. we can run

  2221. into his arms

  2222. in that way

  2223. kind of

  2224. a neat little thing

2225. and it reminded me of

2226. the story of the prodigal son

  2227. in Luke chapter 15

    Luke 15 chapter mention

2228. much in the same way

  2229. you see

  2230. this son

  2231. who has

  2232. who has

  2233. really said

2234. for all intents and purposes

  2235. to his father

2236. I want my inheritance now

  2237. which means

2238. I wish you were dead

  2239. I would prefer

  2240. to go

  2241. squander

  2242. that inheritance

  2243. than you be alive

  2244. and he left

  2245. with his money

2246. you don't see the father

  2247. closed off

  2248. inside

  2249. you see him

  2250. standing out

  2251. and looking

  2252. because we know

2253. that he sees the son

2254. coming from a long way off

  2255. he was attentive

  2256. he was waiting

  2257. for his return

  2258. and the son

  2259. didn't think

  2260. he had the right

  2261. to approach the father

2262. but what do we see

  2263. the father do

  2264. he girds up

  2265. his loins

  2266. and he runs

  2267. to meet the son

  2268. that would have been

  2269. an atrociously

  2270. humiliating thing

  2271. for a man

  2272. of his stature

  2273. to do

  2274. men with money

  2275. did not run

  2276. men who could afford

  2277. golden rings

  2278. and fine robes

  2279. and fattened calves

  2280. did not run

  2281. people ran for them

  2282. but not this father

  2283. he pulls up

  2284. his robes

  2285. and he runs

  2286. to meet the son

  2287. and he invites him

  2288. back

  2289. into the home

  2290. that is such

  2291. a beautiful picture

  2292. of the confidence

  2293. with which we can

  2294. approach God

  2295. because of Christ

  2296. so beloved

  2297. we do not

  2298. come to our king

  2299. sheepishly

  2300. but we come to

  2301. worship him together

  2302. confidently

  2303. it doesn't matter

2304. what you did this week

  2305. you are God's son

  2306. you come together

  2307. with this church

  2308. and confidently

  2309. worship him

  2310. number six

  2311. and closely tied

  2312. Christian worship

  2313. is

  2314. preceded by purification

  2315. the writer of Hebrews

  2316. means for us

  2317. to understand

  2318. that because of this

  2319. all the others

  2320. can be proper

  2321. it's preceded

  2322. by purification

2323. look at the last part

  2324. of verse 22

  2325. let us draw near

  2326. with true heart

  2327. and full assurance

  2328. of faith

  2329. with our hearts

  2330. sprinkled clean

  2331. from the evil conscience

  2332. and our bodies

  2333. washed

  2334. with pure water

2335. now both of these phrases

  2336. are hearts sprinkled clean

  2337. from an evil conscience

  2338. and our bodies

  2339. washed with pure water

  2340. are references

  2341. to some of that

  2342. ceremonial purification

  2343. that I

  2344. mentioned earlier

  2345. our hearts

  2346. speak well clean

  2347. from an evil conscience

2348. look at Hebrews chapter 9

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  2349. 11 through 14

  2350. the writer says

  2351. but when Christ

2352. appeared as a high priest

  2353. of the good things

  2354. that have come

  2355. then through the greater

  2356. and more perfect tent

  2357. not made with hands

2358. that is not of this creation

2359. he entered once for all

  2360. into the holy places

2361. not by means of the blood

  2362. of goats and calves

2363. but by means of his own blood

  2364. thus securing

  2365. an eternal redemption

  2366. for if the blood

  2367. of goats and bulls

  2368. and the sprinkling

  2369. of defiled persons

  2370. with the ashes

  2371. of a heifer

  2372. sanctify

  2373. for the purification

  2374. of the flesh

  2375. how much more

  2376. would the blood

  2377. of Christ

  2378. who through the eternal

  2379. spirit

  2380. offered himself

  2381. without blemish

  2382. to God

  2383. purify our conscience

  2384. from dead works

2385. to serve the living God

2386. what is he talking about

  2387. all this sprinkling

  2388. and heifer

  2389. purify the flesh

2390. in those last two verses

  2391. he's referencing

  2392. Numbers chapter 19

    Numbers 19 chapter mention

  2393. where there's instructions

  2394. given to a person

2395. who touched a dead body

  2396. so in some way

  2397. was involved

  2398. in embalming

  2399. or had a relative

  2400. who had died

  2401. somebody who had touched

  2402. a dead body

  2403. was considered unclean

  2404. and couldn't

  2405. go to the temple

  2406. as a result

2407. and there was a process

  2408. by which

  2409. they were purified

  2410. there was ashes

  2411. mixed with blood

  2412. and they were sprinkled

  2413. with that

  2414. and then

2415. a number of days later

  2416. they would be purified

  2417. that's what he's referencing

  2418. there

  2419. so if that

  2420. was for the purification

  2421. of the flesh

  2422. how much more

  2423. would the blood

  2424. of Christ

  2425. our great high priest

  2426. who through eternal spirit

  2427. offered himself

  2428. without blemish

  2429. to God

  2430. purify our conscience

  2431. from dead works

  2432. the second phrase

  2433. our bodies washed

  2434. with pure water

  2435. Ezekiel 36

  2436. 25-26

  2437. God writes

  2438. I will sprinkle

  2439. clean water

  2440. on you

  2441. and you shall be

  2442. clean from all

  2443. your uncleanliness

  2444. and from all

  2445. your idols

  2446. I will cleanse you

2447. and I will give you

  2448. a new heart

  2449. and a new spirit

2450. I will put within you

  2451. and I will remove

  2452. the heart of stone

  2453. from your flesh

  2454. and give you

  2455. a heart of flesh

  2456. if you are not

  2457. a regenerate Christian

  2458. you cannot worship

  2459. God rightly

  2460. it is impossible

  2461. if Christianity

  2462. is a religion

  2463. of the heart

  2464. and you're not a Christian

2465. you have a heart of stone

  2466. it does not matter

  2467. if you go through

  2468. all the motions

  2469. properly

  2470. it doesn't matter

  2471. if you look

  2472. like a Christian

  2473. it's a matter of the heart

  2474. so Christian worship

  2475. is corporate emphasis

  2476. frequent occurrence

  2477. thoroughly preoccupied

  2478. with God

  2479. includes all

  2480. of our being

  2481. characterized by confidence

  2482. and preceded by purification

  2483. and it's my prayer

  2484. and we'll pray in a moment

  2485. to descend

  2486. that Christ's Family Church

  2487. is a church

  2488. that worships God

  2489. together

  2490. rightly
