  1. Hebrews chapter 10, I'll begin reading in verse 19.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  2. Let's pray together.

  3. Father God, we thank you for your visible church.

  4. I thank you that you are at work amongst us,

  5. and that a great display of Christ's work sits in this room together today.

  6. And I pray, Father, because of your great love for your church,

  7. you will add your blessing to the study of your word this morning,

  8. for your glory and our good.

  9. And we pray this in the precious name of Christ.

  10. Amen.

  11. So please grab a seat.

  12. As I do the same, I'm going to dispel some notions that you may have about me.

  13. And I recognize that these might be very deep-rooted beliefs that you have about who I am as a person,

  14. really right down in the midst of you.

  15. And I just apologize.

  16. I'm going to shake you up a little bit this morning,

  17. because I have to tell you that I'm not the strongest guy you know.

  18. I know many of you think that, and it's just not true.

  19. Wes and I took a group of students from Truett McConnell caving and rock climbing this weekend,

  20. and I am in so much pain right now,

  21. which is why I'm sitting down, not because I'm cool and preach from a stool,

  22. but because I hurt.

  23. I don't think I can stand for 30 minutes.

  24. The second notion you may have about me is that I'm the smartest guy you know,

  25. which is also not true at all,

  26. because I took a bunch of young people caving and climbing

  27. and thought I could hang with them in that act.

  28. So I'm not the strongest or smartest person you know,

  29. which is evidenced not just in this morning, but in a number of things.

  30. So we've been working our way through this text that I read to you this morning,

  31. in Hebrews chapter 10, verse 19 through 25,

    Hebrews 10:19–25

  32. and we came to it with the intended purpose of talking about the vision of Christ's family church.

  33. How is it that Christ's family church,

  34. which we believe exists to experience, proclaim, and display the supremacy of Jesus Christ in all things,

  35. does that?

  36. How is it that we experience, proclaim, and display the supremacy of Jesus Christ in all things?

  37. And I've told you that we kind of like to use an analogy of ministry about the activity of a church,

  38. and we use this picture of a tree that we're to have roots that are firmly and deeply founded in the word of the living God

  39. and branches that exalt Christ in our congregational worship and prayers together,

  40. and fruit that the action of loving one another and the world through service and through the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  41. And so I kind of began in this process of wanting to kind of preach a little series, so to speak,

  42. and God brought me to this text, which contains all of these truths and not quite as neat a format.

  43. But we've been working our way through it, and this will be the last sermon in this text.

  44. Verse 24 and 25 will be our focus this morning.

  45. So let me read just those two verses to you again to kind of bring us in a bit on what we're going to focus on today.

  46. The writer of Hebrews says,

  47. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,

  48. not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some,

  49. but encouraging one another, and all the more, as you see the day drawing near.

  50. And we saw, beginning in verse 19, we saw these privileges, two privileges here.

  51. Certainly there are some beyond that, but two privileges here that have been bought for us

  52. are granted to us by the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  53. And they were, number one, unlimited accessibility to God.

  54. And we see that in verses 19 and 20, that because Christ, because of his sacrifice on our behalf,

  55. the sacrifice once and for all for our sins, we now have full access, easy access,

  56. not once a year access like the Jews had one guy one time a year to enter in the presence of God,

  57. but we have full, unhindered accessibility to God.

  58. And number two, the second great privilege was great advocacy with God,

  59. because Jesus is now our great high priest.

  60. And even now, as I speak at the right hand of the Father,

  61. interceding for me and the preaching this morning,

  62. and interceding for you and your hearing of preaching this morning.

  63. And so we have these great privileges granted to us by the gospel.

  64. And the writer of Hebrews goes on, as a result of that, to give us three exhortations,

  65. three encouragements to us in light of these two privileges.

  66. And these exhortations, these encouragements,

  67. were called by the Puritans, ways of improving upon these privileges.

  68. Not that we make the privileges greater,

  69. but our practicing of them is an improvement upon these privileges.

  70. And the first two that we saw, number one was,

  71. let us draw near to God.

  72. Christian worship, the act of coming together,

  73. let us as a congregation come together with hearts and minds engaged upon who God is.

  74. And number two, we are to hold fast, verse 23,

  75. the confession of our hope, or the one who is our hope, without wavering.

  76. This morning we're going to talk about the third way we're exhorted to improve upon these privileges,

  77. which is there in verse 24 and 25.

  78. So, he begins by saying,

  79. let us consider how to stir up one another.

  80. And you may have a different translation of that.

  81. That Greek word has been translated a number of different ways.

  82. Stimulate, spur on.

  83. But I think my favorite is incite.

  84. Let us consider how to incite one another to love and good works.

  85. Colin Round, who is probably the most renowned contemporary linguist,

  86. has translated this word affectionate incitement.

  87. So, it's not just the strong word of let us figure out how to command one another to love and good works.

  88. Let us affectionately incite one another to love and good works,

  89. which are authentic displays of Christianity.

  90. So, if we're to incite each other to something,

  91. stir up each other to something,

  92. authentic displays of Christianity,

  93. which the writer of Hebrews simply says,

  94. love and good works.

  95. Love, which is affection,

  96. which desires the greatest good of its object.

  97. And good works,

  98. which is just the tangible outworking of that affection.

  99. Is it not?

  100. So, love and good works

  101. is what we're to incite one another to.

  102. And we could easily call this

  103. the ministry of affectionate incitement.

  104. And I want to give you

  105. four points to that end.

  106. The ministry of affectionate incitement.

  107. Number one

  108. is the responsibility

  109. of all of us.

  110. The ministry of affectionate incitement

  111. is the responsibility

  112. of all of us.

  113. And I pointed out to you before,

  114. I'm going to do so again,

  115. the pattern

  116. the writer of Hebrews is using here.

  117. In verse 19,

  118. we see plural pronouns.

  119. We have confidence.

  120. Verse 20,

  121. open for us.

  122. Verse 21,

  123. we have a great priest.

  124. Verse 22,

  125. let us draw near.

  126. Our hearts sprinkled clean.

  127. Our bodies washed.

  128. Verse 23,

  129. let us hold fast.

  130. Verse 24,

  131. let us consider.

  132. Right?

  133. The ministry of affectionate incitement

  134. is the responsibility

  135. of all of us.

  136. If you are in Christ,

  137. this ministry

  138. has been given to you.

  139. I would say,

  140. not only is it a privilege,

  141. but it is a duty

  142. to serve

  143. in this way.

  144. 1 Peter 1,

  145. 22 and 23.

  146. Peter writes,

  147. having purified your souls

  148. by your obedience

  149. to the truth

  150. for a sincere

  151. brotherly love,

  152. love one another

  153. earnestly

  154. from a pure heart.

  155. Why?

  156. The beginning of verse 23,

  157. since you have

  158. been born again.

  159. Love one another

  160. because

  161. of who

  162. you

  163. are.

  164. You are children

  165. of the Most High God.

  166. Therefore,

  167. love one another

  168. will be another way

  169. of saying that.

  170. 1 John 4,

  171. 10 and 11.

  172. John wrote,

  173. in this

  174. is love.

  175. Not that we have loved God,

  176. but that He loved us

  177. and sent His Son

  178. to be the propitiation

  179. for our sins.

  180. Right?

  181. He's talking to the church.

  182. Right?

  183. In this is love

  184. that Christ has died

  185. for us.

  186. Then He says,

  187. Beloved,

  188. if God so loved us,

  189. we also

  190. ought to love

  191. one another.

  192. It's a response

  193. to who

  194. we are

  195. because Christ

  196. has purchased us.

  197. John 13,

  198. 35,

  199. Jesus says,

  200. By this,

  201. all people will know

  202. that you are

  203. my disciples.

  204. By what?

  205. By Sunday morning

  206. participation?

  207. By the t-shirts

  208. that we wear?

  209. By the things

  210. we claim to hate

  211. and be against?

  212. Mm-mm.

  213. If you have love

  214. for one another.

  215. This is the

  216. defining characteristic.

  217. Are there other things

  218. that you characterize

  219. as followers of Christ?

  220. Absolutely.

  221. But if we had to say

  222. one that trumps them all,

  223. this is the one.

  224. Our love

  225. for

  226. one

  227. another.

  228. So this is a ministry

  229. that belongs

  230. to all of us.

  231. There aren't

  232. people

  233. specifically called

  234. to be

  235. inciders of

  236. love and good works.

  237. This is something

  238. that is responsibility

  239. laid on all

  240. our shoulders.

  241. Number two,

  242. the ministry of affection

  243. and incitement

  244. is the fruit

  245. of intention.

  246. It is the fruit

  247. of intention.

  248. Verse 24 begins,

  249. let us

  250. consider.

  251. And as

  252. has been the pattern

  253. over these past

  254. couple of weeks,

  255. the let us

  256. is not actually

  257. found in Greek,

  258. but it's implied

  259. in the Greek word.

  260. So it's actually

  261. one word here.

  262. Let us

  263. consider

  264. is one Greek word,

  265. plural,

  266. present active.

  267. It's a very strong word,

  268. this word consider.

  269. it means to

  270. consider

  271. attentively,

  272. to fix

  273. one's mind

  274. and gaze

  275. upon.

  276. It's the very

  277. same word

  278. used in Hebrews

    Hebrews 3:1

  279. chapter 3,

  280. verse 1,

  281. where the writer

  282. says,

  283. fix your eyes

  284. upon Jesus.

  285. The idea there

  286. is not that you

  287. glance

  288. at Christ,

  289. but that you

  290. fully set

  291. your gaze

  292. on Christ,

  293. right?

  294. intently

  295. staring at

  296. who Christ

  297. is,

  298. his person

  299. and his work.

  300. The same

  301. word used

  302. there,

  303. very strong

  304. word,

  305. consider

  306. attentively,

  307. fix your

  308. mind

  309. upon this.

  310. It's not

  311. going to happen

  312. just because.

  313. This is something

  314. we're going to

  315. have to work

  316. at.

  317. Not everyone

  318. here needs

  319. to be

  320. incited

  321. in the same

  322. way.

  323. We all have

  324. different

  325. experience.

  326. We're all

  327. going through

  328. something

  329. differently

  330. today.

  331. All of us

  332. have different

  333. home situations.

  334. All of us

  335. have struggled

  336. with various

  337. sins in the

  338. past and

  339. in the

  340. present.

  341. If we

  342. are to

  343. be about

  344. the ministry

  345. of incitement,

  346. it's going

  347. to take

  348. intention

  349. on our

  350. part.

  351. We're going

  352. to have to

  353. pay attention

  354. to those

  355. around us

  356. and their

  357. needs.

  358. We're going

  359. to have to

  360. get to

  361. know each

  362. other a

  363. little bit,

  364. aren't we?

  365. It's also

  366. regular and

  367. ongoing.

  368. I mentioned

  369. that it's

  370. present active

  371. tense.

  372. This is not

  373. something that

  374. you do

  375. one time.

  376. It's not a

  377. checkbox on

  378. your list of

  379. Christian duty

  380. for the week

  381. and you

  382. check it off

  383. once and

  384. you say,

  385. incited,

  386. I'm done,

  387. it's good.

  388. This is a

  389. constant,

  390. engaged

  391. activity that

  392. we are to

  393. be about.

  394. Leads us

  395. to number

  396. three.

  397. The ministry

  398. of affectionate

  399. incitement

  400. necessitates

  401. consistent

  402. togetherness.

  403. Necessitates

  404. consistent

  405. togetherness.

  406. We see

  407. that in

  408. verse 25.

  409. Now,

  410. I don't

  411. know how

  412. your translation

  413. may render

  414. verse 24 and

  415. 25,

  416. but upon

  417. an initial

  418. reading,

  419. it seems

  420. as if

  421. verse 25

  422. is a

  423. fourth

  424. exhortation.

  425. That it's

  426. yet another

  427. thing we

  428. should do

  429. in light of

  430. what Christ

  431. has done

  432. for us.

  433. However,

  434. really it

  435. could be

  436. read,

  437. verse 24,

  438. and let us

  439. consider how

  440. to stir up

  441. one another

  442. to love

  443. and good

  444. works,

  445. verse 25,

  446. by not

  447. neglecting

  448. to meet

  449. together.

  450. So,

  451. let us

  452. consider how

  453. to do

  454. this by

  455. meeting

  456. together.

  457. He says

  458. it in the

  459. negative

  460. first,

  461. not

  462. neglecting

  463. to meet

  464. together,

  465. as is

  466. the habit

  467. of some,

  468. but the

  469. implication is

  470. meeting together

  471. and encouraging

  472. one another.

  473. And all

  474. the more,

  475. as you say,

  476. this day

  477. drawing near,

  478. probably this

  479. book was

  480. written just

  481. prior to

  482. 70 AD,

  483. we don't

  484. know exactly

  485. when,

  486. but probably

  487. so.

  488. It was rather

  489. early in the

  490. Christian church,

  491. and it would

  492. seem that

  493. already,

  494. Christians had

  495. gotten out of

  496. the habit

  497. meeting together

  498. had already

  499. become a

  500. challenge in

  501. the church.

  502. This book

  503. written to

  504. Jewish believers

  505. in Rome

  506. had already

  507. began to

  508. drift apart

  509. and neglect

  510. their gathering

  511. together.

  512. We don't see

  513. in this text

  514. why.

  515. He doesn't

  516. get to that,

  517. but we know

  518. historically there

  519. are documents

  520. outside of

  521. Scripture that

  522. talk about what

  523. was going on

  524. and the

  525. varying reasons

  526. that people

  527. were potentially

  528. not meeting

  529. together.

  530. Fear of

  531. persecution

  532. from the

  533. Romans,

  534. embarrassed by

  535. the size of

  536. their small

  537. congregation

  538. compared to

  539. the large

  540. gathering at

  541. the Jewish

  542. synagogues,

  543. business

  544. possibly.

  545. Until the

  546. fourth century,

  547. this was a

  548. day of work,

  549. the first day

  550. of the week.

  551. The Lord's

  552. Day was a

  553. day of work,

  554. and they

  555. met in the

  556. evenings,

  557. early Christians

  558. did,

  559. on the first

  560. day of the

  561. week.

  562. So that's

  563. potentially

  564. spiritual

  565. laziness.

  566. Not really

  567. another way to

  568. put that,

  569. just spiritual

  570. laziness

  571. would have

  572. caused them

  573. to neglect

  574. to meet

  575. together.

  576. As I said,

  577. none of these

  578. things are in

  579. the text,

  580. but the

  581. reason for

  582. that, I

  583. believe,

  584. is that none

  585. of them

  586. really matter.

  587. It doesn't

  588. give us a

  589. way to

  590. wiggle out

  591. of this.

  592. If we have

  593. a ministry

  594. that we've

  595. all been

  596. called to,

  597. that's going

  598. to take

  599. intention,

  600. we ought

  601. to meet

  602. together.

  603. We ought

  604. not

  605. neglect

  606. meeting

  607. together.

  608. Some people

  609. will say,

  610. you don't

  611. have to go

  612. to church

  613. to be a

  614. Christian.

  615. Many of you

  616. may know

  617. people like

  618. that.

  619. You may

  620. be one

  621. of the

  622. people that

  623. would say

  624. that,

  625. whether

  626. you'd say

  627. it out

  628. loud or

  629. not.

  630. You don't

  631. have to

  632. go to

  633. church

  634. to be a

  635. Christian.

  636. And I

  637. agree with

  638. you.

  639. You also

  640. don't have

  641. to go

  642. home to

  643. be married.

  644. But if

  645. that's the

  646. attitude that

  647. you cherish

  648. in your

  649. heart,

  650. there's

  651. something

  652. seriously

  653. wrong in

  654. both cases.

  655. Because of

  656. the privileges

  657. bought for

  658. us by

  659. Christ,

  660. we ought

  661. to want

  662. to be

  663. together.

  664. I'm not

  665. being

  666. legalistic.

  667. There are

  668. things that

  669. take us

  670. away,

  671. and that's

  672. okay.

  673. I wouldn't

  674. begin to

  675. say I

  676. expect you

  677. all to

  678. be here

  679. every single

  680. time we

  681. gather

  682. together.

  683. There are

  684. circumstances

  685. that take

  686. us apart.

  687. Next week,

  688. I won't be

  689. here.

  690. I'm taking

  691. a forced

  692. vacation.

  693. Chris has

  694. told me that

  695. I have to

  696. take a week

  697. off this

  698. fall before

  699. I die.

  700. And so I'm

  701. doing that

  702. next week,

  703. and I won't

  704. be here next

  705. Sunday.

  706. However,

  707. if I don't

  708. long to be

  709. here next

  710. Sunday,

  711. if it's not

  712. the place I

  713. would ultimately

  714. love to be,

  715. there's

  716. something wrong

  717. with my

  718. heart.

  719. I will

  720. miss you

  721. guys next

  722. Sunday.

  723. I know

  724. that for a

  725. fact.

  726. Sam and

  727. I are

  728. going to

  729. go spend

  730. the Lord's

  731. Day with

  732. her family.

  733. Her father

  734. is a

  735. pastor,

  736. and we're

  737. going to

  738. visit his

  739. church.

  740. I've only

  741. been there

  742. once,

  743. and all

  744. the time

  745. I've been

  746. married to

  747. Sam,

  748. so we're

  749. going to

  750. go do

  751. that.

  752. But I'm

  753. going to

  754. sit there

  755. the entire

  756. time wishing

  757. !

  758. I was with

  759. you,

  760. because you

  761. are my

  762. church,

  763. and that

  764. ought to be

  765. the attitude

  766. of our

  767. hearts.

  768. So,

  769. don't

  770. mischear me,

  771. I'm not

  772. being legalistic.

  773. I'm talking

  774. about your

  775. heart,

  776. not the

  777. activity so

  778. much,

  779. but where

  780. do you

  781. long to

  782. be?

  783. Young

  784. people,

  785. when you're

  786. up here

  787. for school,

  788. come and

  789. be with

  790. us.

  791. When you

  792. go home

  793. for the

  794. summer,

  795. I hope

  796. you miss

  797. us.

  798. I hope

  799. you can't

  800. wait until

  801. school starts

  802. back in

  803. the fall.

  804. So it

  805. necessitates

  806. consistent

  807. togetherness.

  808. How are we

  809. going to know

  810. one another

  811. if we don't

  812. spend time

  813. together?

  814. Inciting

  815. one another

  816. to love

  817. and good

  818. works,

  819. encouraging

  820. one another

  821. as the

  822. day draws

  823. near,

  824. is not

  825. something you

  826. can do

  827. if you're

  828. a church

  829. hopper.

  830. How will

  831. you possibly

  832. know how

  833. to encourage

  834. a person

  835. if you

  836. don't know

  837. anybody

  838. at the

  839. churches

  840. you go

  841. to?

  842. Speaking

  843. particularly

  844. to you

  845. young

  846. people,

  847. pick a

  848. group of

  849. people.

  850. No church

  851. has it

  852. all right.

  853. We're all

  854. a mess

  855. because we're

  856. made of

  857. people.

  858. Go to a

  859. church and

  860. get involved

  861. and love

  862. the people.

  863. Fall in

  864. love with

  865. people,

  866. not

  867. programs.

  868. Certainly

  869. there are

  870. attributes that

  871. make a

  872. godly church.

  873. We can

  874. talk about

  875. those later.

  876. But just

  877. be sure

  878. you're not

  879. worshipping a

  880. show,

  881. serving your

  882. ends,

  883. but you're

  884. going to

  885. serve a

  886. group of

  887. people.

  888. number

  889. four.

  890. The

  891. ministry

  892. of

  893. incitement

  894. expresses

  895. itself

  896. in

  897. encouragement.

  898. It

  899. expresses

  900. itself

  901. in

  902. encouragement.

  903. This

  904. is how

  905. we

  906. incite

  907. one

  908. another

  909. to

  910. love

  911. and

  912. good

  913. works.

  914. He

  915. concludes

  916. verse

  917. 25 by

  918. saying,

  919. as you

  920. see the

  921. day

  922. drawing

  923. near,

  924. and this

  925. is my

  926. belief,

  927. this is

  928. my

  929. presumption

  930. that he

  931. includes

  932. that because

  933. he believes

  934. that things

  935. are going

  936. to get

  937. tougher

  938. for these

  939. people.

  940. Things are

  941. going to

  942. be more

  943. difficult for

  944. them.

  945. We see at

  946. the end of

  947. chapter 10

  948. that they've

  949. already endured

  950. suffering.

  951. He knows

  952. that more

  953. is coming.

  954. As the

  955. final day

  956. of judgment

  957. comes,

  958. persecution

  959. will rise

  960. in the

  961. world,

  962. and they'll

  963. need this

  964. even more

  965. than they

  966. need it

  967. now.

  968. This

  969. encouragement,

  970. this word,

  971. this Greek

  972. word,

  973. encouraging,

  974. is a

  975. very elastic

  976. word.

  977. It can

  978. mean lots

  979. of things.

  980. It can

  981. mean to

  982. exhort,

  983. to comfort,

  984. to help,

  985. to urge,

  986. to appeal

  987. to,

  988. to admonish,

  989. to strengthen.

  990. It can

  991. mean all

  992. these things.

  993. There are

  994. a number

  995. of others

  996. that it

  997. can also

  998. mean.

  999. But its

  1000. emphasis,

  1001. the word

  1002. of emphasis,

  1003. is verbal.

  1004. Emphasis is

  1005. verbal.

  1006. So this

  1007. kind of

  1008. encouragement

  1009. can come

  1010. in the

  1011. form of

  1012. a sermon,

  1013. can come

  1014. in the

  1015. form of

  1016. a piece

  1017. of music

  1018. performed,

  1019. or led,

  1020. can come

  1021. in the

  1022. form of

  1023. a letter.

  1024. Actually,

  1025. at the

  1026. end of

  1027. Hebrews,

  1028. the writer

  1029. calls his

  1030. letter words

  1031. of exhortation

  1032. or words

  1033. of encouragement.

  1034. Same word

  1035. there.

  1036. Words of

  1037. encouragement.

  1038. But since

  1039. this ministry

  1040. has been

  1041. given to

  1042. all of

  1043. us,

  1044. it also

  1045. must express

  1046. itself

  1047. one-to-one.

  1048. On a

  1049. one-on-one

  1050. basis.

  1051. It must,

  1052. right?

  1053. I can't be

  1054. the only one

  1055. this morning

  1056. that's going

  1057. to be an

  1058. encourager.

  1059. But we

  1060. must be

  1061. expressing

  1062. this one-to-one.

  1063. Have you ever

  1064. considered that

  1065. the part you

  1066. play in us

  1067. coming together

  1068. is to come

  1069. and encourage

  1070. somebody else?

  1071. Have you ever

  1072. thought about

  1073. that?

  1074. We might

  1075. show up

  1076. before 1030

  1077. if we

  1078. realize that.

  1079. We might

  1080. come looking

  1081. for an

  1082. opportunity

  1083. to encourage

  1084. somebody

  1085. in our

  1086. setting.

  1087. We might

  1088. stick around

  1089. a little bit

  1090. beyond our

  1091. formal gatherings

  1092. together.

  1093. We might

  1094. look for

  1095. opportunities

  1096. beyond the

  1097. organized times

  1098. we meet

  1099. together to

  1100. get with

  1101. members of

  1102. the church.

  1103. church.

  1104. Have you

  1105. considered that?

  1106. You play

  1107. an important

  1108. part in our

  1109. meeting together.

  1110. You're not

  1111. merely a

  1112. spectator.

  1113. You might

  1114. ask me,

  1115. how do I

  1116. do this?

  1117. How do I

  1118. encourage?

  1119. I don't

  1120. find myself

  1121. to be a

  1122. particularly

  1123. encouraging

  1124. person.

  1125. I don't

  1126. really feel

  1127. that I'm

  1128. equipped to

  1129. counsel

  1130. somebody or

  1131. minister to

  1132. them in

  1133. any way

  1134. whatsoever.

  1135. I'm not a

  1136. very knowledgeable

  1137. person.

  1138. I feel

  1139. theologically

  1140. weak.

  1141. I feel

  1142. like I

  1143. fail so

  1144. much in

  1145. my own

  1146. sin and

  1147. I just

  1148. don't have

  1149. a lot to

  1150. offer to

  1151. anybody to

  1152. think through

  1153. processes.

  1154. How is it

  1155. that I'm

  1156. meant to

  1157. encourage the

  1158. church?

  1159. Let me

  1160. tell you how

  1161. you can

  1162. encourage me.

  1163. Talk about

  1164. Jesus Christ.

  1165. Talk about

  1166. the great

  1167. work He is

  1168. doing in

  1169. your life.

  1170. And that

  1171. will move

  1172. me to do

  1173. the same to

  1174. you.

  1175. this

  1176. becomes a

  1177. cyclical

  1178. ministry

  1179. in the

  1180. church.

  1181. You

  1182. encourage

  1183. somebody

  1184. with a

  1185. great

  1186. work of

  1187. the

  1188. gospel

  1189. in your

  1190. life

  1191. and it's

  1192. going to

  1193. motivate them

  1194. to do

  1195. the same.

  1196. Love and

  1197. good works.

  1198. It begins

  1199. to build

  1200. like a

  1201. snowball

  1202. amongst us.

  1203. That is

  1204. the way

  1205. you minister

  1206. to those

  1207. around you.

  1208. Somebody

  1209. here may

  1210. have a

  1211. wayward

  1212. father.

  1213. Feels

  1214. a lack

  1215. in their

  1216. life.

  1217. life.

  1218. And you

  1219. may not

  1220. have ever

  1221. experienced

  1222. that.

  1223. There is

  1224. no way

  1225. I'll ever

  1226. have all

  1227. of the

  1228. life

  1229. experiences

  1230. shared in

  1231. this room.

  1232. Praise God,

  1233. that would

  1234. be a lot

  1235. of a mess,

  1236. wouldn't it,

  1237. for me?

  1238. handle.

  1239. But the

  1240. gospel of

  1241. Jesus Christ

  1242. ministers to

  1243. all of

  1244. those

  1245. situations.

  1246. So

  1247. minister to

  1248. one another

  1249. with the

  1250. gospel.

  1251. Encourage

  1252. one another

  1253. with what

  1254. God is

  1255. doing in

  1256. your life.

  1257. I hope

  1258. and pray

  1259. that God

  1260. is doing

  1261. something in

  1262. your life

  1263. worth sharing

  1264. this week.

  1265. If not,

  1266. let's get

  1267. busy.

  1268. Right?

  1269. Let's

  1270. imagine if

  1271. all of us,

  1272. the few of us

  1273. that there are

  1274. here, but if

  1275. all of us

  1276. came this

  1277. morning with

  1278. a thought in

  1279. mind, I'm

  1280. not coming

  1281. here to

  1282. serve myself,

  1283. I'm coming

  1284. to corporate

  1285. worship to

  1286. praise God

  1287. and to

  1288. encourage the

  1289. church.

  1290. That's what

  1291. you had.

  1292. You got up

  1293. this morning

  1294. with that on

  1295. your mind

  1296. and prepared

  1297. yourself for

  1298. it.

  1299. All of us

  1300. came together

  1301. for that

  1302. activity.

  1303. Can you

  1304. imagine what

  1305. a different

  1306. group of

  1307. people we

  1308. would be?

  1309. I do

  1310. not want

  1311. Christ Family

  1312. Church to

  1313. be known

  1314. for the

  1315. distinctives on

  1316. our website.

  1317. Those are

  1318. good things.

  1319. Those are

  1320. important

  1321. things.

  1322. We're

  1323. reformed,

  1324. Southern

  1325. Baptist,

  1326. missional,

  1327. family

  1328. integrated,

  1329. good things.

  1330. I don't

  1331. want to be

  1332. known for

  1333. those things.

  1334. If that's

  1335. all we're

  1336. known for,

  1337. we're just

  1338. another

  1339. flavor.

  1340. We're just

  1341. another type

  1342. of church.

  1343. I want

  1344. people to

  1345. know us

  1346. for our

  1347. love for

  1348. one another.

  1349. I want

  1350. somebody to

  1351. say to

  1352. you,

  1353. someday,

  1354. I want

  1355. them to

  1356. say,

  1357. what church

  1358. do you

  1359. go to?

  1360. You say,

  1361. oh,

  1362. Christ Family

  1363. Church,

  1364. and in

  1365. their minds

  1366. they go,

  1367. of course,

  1368. those people

  1369. really love

  1370. each other.

  1371. That's the

  1372. kind of thing

  1373. we should be

  1374. known for.

  1375. Not buildings

  1376. and signs

  1377. and programs,

  1378. but how much

  1379. we love

  1380. one another.

  1381. Can you

  1382. imagine

  1383. what that

  1384. would look

  1385. like?

  1386. Briefly,

  1387. I want to

  1388. talk about

  1389. four things

  1390. that hinder

  1391. this kind

  1392. of ministry

  1393. amongst us.

  1394. Four things,

  1395. quickly.

  1396. Number one,

  1397. self-sufficiency.

  1398. Self-sufficiency.

  1399. You were

  1400. not saved

  1401. simply for

  1402. yourself.

  1403. In the

  1404. 70s,

  1405. I've harped

  1406. on this a

  1407. couple of

  1408. times in the

  1409. past,

  1410. in the

  1411. 70s,

  1412. a little

  1413. bit of

  1414. language

  1415. entered

  1416. into

  1417. Christendom.

  1418. That phrase,

  1419. personal

  1420. relationship

  1421. with Jesus

  1422. Christ,

  1423. and I

  1424. think it

  1425. was birthed

  1426. out of

  1427. good

  1428. motivation,

  1429. but why

  1430. we think

  1431. that when

  1432. we mess

  1433. with

  1434. biblical

  1435. language,

  1436. it won't

  1437. have some

  1438. negative

  1439. side effect

  1440. is beyond

  1441. me.

  1442. Gospel

  1443. presentation

  1444. should be

  1445. repentant

  1446. belief,

  1447. not personal

  1448. relationship

  1449. with Jesus

  1450. Christ.

  1451. God saves

  1452. individuals,

  1453. but he saves

  1454. them to

  1455. the church.

  1456. You are

  1457. not self

  1458. sufficient.

  1459. You were

  1460. saved to a

  1461. community of

  1462. believers.

  1463. God's

  1464. graces

  1465. come

  1466. through the

  1467. church.

  1468. John

  1469. Wesley

  1470. once said

  1471. there's

  1472. nothing more

  1473. unchristian

  1474. than a

  1475. solitary

  1476. Christian.

  1477. There is

  1478. nothing more

  1479. unchristian

  1480. than a

  1481. solitary

  1482. Christian.

  1483. Number two,

  1484. formality.

  1485. formality.

  1486. Having

  1487. certain

  1488. expectations

  1489. of our

  1490. time

  1491. together,

  1492. our

  1493. liturgy

  1494. together,

  1495. and a

  1496. belief that

  1497. our time

  1498. together does

  1499. not extend

  1500. beyond our

  1501. organized time

  1502. together.

  1503. That coming,

  1504. walking in the

  1505. back door,

  1506. sitting down,

  1507. going through

  1508. the motions,

  1509. getting up and

  1510. walking out,

  1511. is the extent of

  1512. your Christian

  1513. participation.

  1514. Formality will

  1515. get in the way

  1516. of the

  1517. ministry of

  1518. incitement.

  1519. number three,

  1520. bitterness.

  1521. As I've

  1522. said before,

  1523. we are an

  1524. imperfect group

  1525. of people.

  1526. I won't

  1527. always say

  1528. the kind

  1529. words you

  1530. need to

  1531. hear.

  1532. I pray

  1533. that I

  1534. always do,

  1535. but I

  1536. won't.

  1537. I won't

  1538. always walk

  1539. in here with

  1540. the best

  1541. attitude.

  1542. I won't

  1543. always call

  1544. you when

  1545. you feel

  1546. you need

  1547. a call.

  1548. don't let

  1549. a root of

  1550. bitterness

  1551. form in

  1552. you toward

  1553. members of

  1554. the church.

  1555. We are

  1556. all imperfect.

  1557. We are

  1558. all on a

  1559. progression

  1560. towards

  1561. perfection,

  1562. but we

  1563. fail a lot.

  1564. Don't make

  1565. being here

  1566. about you.

  1567. Think about

  1568. serving others.

  1569. Don't let

  1570. bitterness get

  1571. in the way.

  1572. And number

  1573. four,

  1574. elitism.

  1575. Elitism is

  1576. the creation

  1577. of cliques

  1578. based on

  1579. exclusiveness.

  1580. J.I.

  1581. Packard

  1582. called

  1583. elitism

  1584. a satanic

  1585. counterfeit

  1586. of true

  1587. fellowship.

  1588. A satanic

  1589. counterfeit

  1590. of true

  1591. fellowship.

  1592. The ministry

  1593. of incitement

  1594. involves you

  1595. getting involved

  1596. in people's

  1597. lives of

  1598. varying

  1599. backgrounds

  1600. and

  1601. demographics

  1602. from you.

  1603. don't allow

  1604. yourself to

  1605. become a

  1606. clique that

  1607. excludes

  1608. others from

  1609. your group.

  1610. You never

  1611. know who

  1612. may need

  1613. to be

  1614. in your

  1615. group both

  1616. for their

  1617. benefit and

  1618. for ours.

  1619. It's worth

  1620. noting that if

  1621. we have a

  1622. love like

  1623. this that

  1624. expresses itself

  1625. properly,

  1626. this love

  1627. and good

  1628. works,

  1629. that this

  1630. kind of

  1631. affection,

  1632. us being

  1633. known for

  1634. our love

  1635. for one

  1636. another,

  1637. this kind

  1638. of affection

  1639. is going

  1640. to spill

  1641. outside of

  1642. our borders.

  1643. I believe

  1644. that if

  1645. I'm

  1646. encouraged

  1647. the way

  1648. I should

  1649. be

  1650. encouraged

  1651. in this

  1652. meeting,

  1653. the

  1654. encouragement

  1655. I can

  1656. give back,

  1657. I'll have

  1658. too much

  1659. of it.

  1660. I won't

  1661. be able

  1662. to give

  1663. it away.

  1664. And it's

  1665. going to

  1666. spill

  1667. outside of

  1668. the borders

  1669. of this

  1670. meeting time

  1671. to our

  1672. communities,

  1673. places we

  1674. live and

  1675. work and

  1676. play,

  1677. that ultimately

  1678. there will

  1679. be not just

  1680. fruit of love

  1681. within our

  1682. church,

  1683. but fruit of

  1684. love to the

  1685. world.

  1686. We won't

  1687. be able to

  1688. contain the

  1689. goodness of

  1690. Christ,

  1691. which is

  1692. experienced

  1693. here amongst

  1694. us.

  1695. And it's

  1696. my deep

  1697. prayer,

  1698. and I

  1699. realized as I

  1700. was looking

  1701. over my

  1702. notes this

  1703. morning that

  1704. I'm not

  1705. shy to try

  1706. to coin

  1707. phrases.

  1708. And I say

  1709. try because

  1710. if you

  1711. actually coin

  1712. a phrase,

  1713. people begin

  1714. to use it,

  1715. exchange it

  1716. as currency.

  1717. They actually

  1718. understand what

  1719. it means.

  1720. And I tend

  1721. to say things

  1722. and just

  1723. continue to

  1724. say them and

  1725. nobody has a

  1726. clue what I'm

  1727. talking about.

  1728. So let me

  1729. tell you when

  1730. I say it's

  1731. my deep

  1732. prayer.

  1733. Deep prayers

  1734. for me come

  1735. out of deep

  1736. conviction.

  1737. An understanding

  1738. of what church

  1739. should look

  1740. like is not

  1741. just something

  1742. that God's

  1743. put in my

  1744. head,

  1745. but it

  1746. kind of

  1747. is sitting

  1748. down here

  1749. in my

  1750. gut.

  1751. I long

  1752. for our

  1753. church to

  1754. look like

  1755. this.

  1756. I desire

  1757. not just

  1758. a small

  1759. group of

  1760. people that

  1761. understand and

  1762. engage in

  1763. what community,

  1764. what church

  1765. is actually

  1766. meant to be

  1767. about,

  1768. but a large

  1769. group of

  1770. people that

  1771. get this.

  1772. that put

  1773. down the

  1774. consumerism of

  1775. American

  1776. Christianity,

  1777. understand that

  1778. Christianity is

  1779. relational.

  1780. It's a

  1781. fellowship.

  1782. First,

  1783. vertical,

  1784. and second,

  1785. horizontal.

  1786. It makes me

  1787. hurt to think

  1788. about how bad I

  1789. want to see this

  1790. happen.

  1791. And that's what I

  1792. mean when I

  1793. say it's my

  1794. deep prayer.

  1795. Christ Family

  1796. Church will be a

  1797. church that so

  1798. greatly appreciates the

  1799. privileges bought for

  1800. us by Christ,

  1801. understands them,

  1802. really knows what's

  1803. been granted to us

  1804. by Christ,

  1805. this unlimited

  1806. accessibility to

  1807. God and our

  1808. great advocacy

  1809. with God,

  1810. that will actively

  1811. and continually be

  1812. about the work of

  1813. improving upon

  1814. these privileges,

  1815. and that will do

  1816. so by drawing near

  1817. to God and God

  1818. centered,

  1819. frequent,

  1820. corporate worship

  1821. that will hold

  1822. fast to the one

  1823. in whom we have

  1824. hope through a

  1825. deep understanding

  1826. of His redemptive

  1827. work,

  1828. and that fixing

  1829. our gaze on

  1830. mutually encouraging

  1831. one another

  1832. will be known

  1833. for love and

  1834. good works.

  1835. I hope that

  1836. the analogy of

  1837. the tree now

  1838. has become

  1839. glaringly,

  1840. abundantly

  1841. clear to all

  1842. view,

  1843. roots,

  1844. branches,

  1845. and fruit.
