  1. Chapters 1-5 of Romans has made it clear to us that salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, apart from works.

  2. ! Grace alone, 100% by God's grace. Salvation is His work on the sinner, for the sinner, and not the other way around.

  3. We receive what we do not deserve by God's grace.

  4. By faith alone, it is 100% by faith alone. We cannot earn or work towards salvation.

  5. No religious activity, no number of prayers during the day, no good deeds.

  6. It is by faith alone in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins.

  7. And in Christ alone, Christ, only Jesus Christ, paid the price with His sinless life that we should have paid so that we can be made righteous.

  8. Nothing else can accomplish what He accomplished on the cross for us.

  9. Meaning, that this salvation, the title that we carry with us, Christian, is all because of Christ and nothing that we have done.

  10. There's nothing that you and I have done to deserve or earn this title.

  11. It's a big deal.

  12. There's nothing in us that made us desirable.

  13. There's nothing in us that screamed to the world or to God,

  14. look at me, look how deserving I am of grace and mercy.

  15. See, God's grace is shown to the undeserving and to the dead.

  16. Grace founded in Christ because of Christ and His obedience.

  17. See, God's grace is huge.

  18. We truly cannot grasp this grace.

  19. We can't grasp what He has done for us.

  20. We have words to help.

  21. Words like, dead, the dead made alive.

  22. Or words like, a child of wrath, now at peace with God.

  23. But when we really try to wrap our heads around the grace of God, we just can't.

  24. And that's why you'll hear some of us say, in a situation, we'll say,

  25. well, that's God's grace or God's given me grace or God's grace this.

  26. Because it is just so huge.

  27. God's grace is wonderful.

  28. To be the recipient of such love and such care is wonderful.

  29. So to the person in here who does not feel loved,

  30. cling to Christ for He loves you.

  31. Cling to Him.

  32. The Father cares for you as His child because you have been adopted.

  33. God's grace is magnificent.

  34. It is truly beyond our comprehension.

  35. The God whose breath put the stars in the sky and the mountains to their specific heights

  36. is the same God who loves you and is for you.

  37. God's grace is real.

  38. God's grace has a taste.

  39. It has a feel to it.

  40. It's not just an idea thought up by some apostle 2,000 years ago

  41. or even me or some author of a book that you've read here recently.

  42. It's real.

  43. You know it's real because His grace has a real effect on your life.

  44. Even when you might not understand.

  45. God's grace is everlasting.

  46. The impact that God has is everlasting.

  47. It's final from now until forever.

  48. It was started before the foundation of the world and it goes to eternity.

  49. God's grace is personal.

  50. You have been created in His own image.

  51. You were created by Him, for Him, and it brings Him great glory.

  52. And us great joy to bring Him glory.

  53. We can cry Abba Father.

  54. We can cry Daddy to Him because we have been adopted as sons of the King.

  55. Romans 8 verse 15 says,

    Romans 8:15

  56. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,

  57. but you received the spirit of adoption as sons,

  58. by whom we cry Abba Father.

  59. Listen to this.

  60. The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

  61. And if children, then heirs.

  62. Heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.

  63. Provided we suffer with Him in order that we also be glorified with Him.

  64. The Spirit Himself bears witness that we are His.

  65. It is personal.

  66. Jesus died bearing the sin of you and me.

  67. For you and me.

  68. And God's grace is radical.

  69. And this is where our text is this morning.

  70. This is kind of where we sit.

  71. It is radical enough to kill us.

  72. And it is radical enough to give us life.

  73. We are going to look at these two truths and their implications.

  74. So as a quick review,

  75. I kind of need to do this because Paul is making an argument throughout this letter.

  76. Romans chapter 1 basically starts off with the depravity of man.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  77. That we are all sinners.

  78. That we are in need of a Savior.

  79. He even touches on the person in a jungle far away who has never heard the gospel.

  80. And he says that they are without excuse because even creation speaks of the glory of God.

  81. We come to chapter 2.

  82. Chapter 2 is about the Jewish people are depraved.

  83. The Jewish people are sinners.

  84. There is no religion, no activity that saves you.

  85. Chapter 3 kind of sums up 1 and 2.

  86. We are all sinners in need of a Savior.

  87. That no one is righteous.

  88. No, not one.

  89. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  90. Chapter 4.

  91. Okay, we've got to establish.

  92. Here's our problem.

  93. Chapter 4 is the solution.

  94. We are justified by faith alone.

  95. Not by works.

  96. So, as I've said already, no religious activity, no good deed, no prayer, no nothing can earn your salvation.

  97. It is by faith alone in Christ alone.

  98. And that is a gift from God.

  99. Chapter 5 is kind of the result or starts in the result of being saved by faith alone.

  100. We are given peace with God.

  101. We are given peace with God.

  102. That our standing with God is right and at peace because of the work of Christ.

  103. And then at the end, last week, we talked about either belonging to Adam or belonging to Jesus Christ.

  104. Adam brought sin into the world.

  105. Jesus brought life into the world by living a sinless life and dying for our sins.

  106. So, here's where we kind of step.

  107. So, as we gather this morning, the majority in this room bear the title Christian.

  108. I think it's safe to say.

  109. But there may be some who have never tasted it.

  110. You've never heard of Jesus or never even considered this Christian thing.

  111. And if that's the case, then I'm glad you're here.

  112. Because my prayer is that you would see that Jesus is all you need.

  113. No matter the situation in which you're living.

  114. No matter the bad thing that you think you've done that will not be taken care of, will not be forgiven.

  115. No matter the baggage you brought with you this morning, He is all you need.

  116. He will take that baggage from you because He loves you and He cares for you.

  117. God's grace leads to a certain type of living.

  118. And this, I hope and I pray, is what we will all see, be convicted of and commit to live.

  119. So, let's dig in.

  120. I'm going to start reading in verse 20 of chapter 5 and then read through 11 in chapter 6.

  121. Verse 20.

  122. Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more.

  123. So that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign throughout righteousness, leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  124. So stop for a second.

  125. Our salvation is Jesus Christ alone.

  126. On what He has done, not what we have done.

  127. So that's kind of, okay, so we're all on the same page.

  128. Verse 1.

  129. What shall we say then?

  130. Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

  131. By no means.

  132. How can we who died to sin still live in it?

  133. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?

  134. We were buried, therefore, with Him by baptism into death in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,

  135. we too might walk in newness of life.

  136. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His.

  137. We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing,

  138. so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

  139. For one who has died has been set free from sin.

  140. Now, if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.

  141. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again.

  142. Death no longer has dominion over Him.

  143. For the death He died, He died to sin once for all.

  144. For the life He lives, He lives to God.

  145. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  146. God's grace is radical.

  147. One point this morning, two sub-points, and then some other things mixed in there.

  148. God's grace is radical.

  149. And it's radical enough to kill us.

  150. See, all Christians, no matter what maturity,

  151. nominal Christian, immature Christian, mature Christian, growing Christian,

  152. all would agree that Jesus died for our sins.

  153. All Christians acknowledge that Jesus is what Christianity is all about.

  154. You'll see bumper stickers and signs and coffee mugs that say,

  155. Jesus is the reason for the season.

  156. We're getting into that season.

  157. You'll see, Jesus is my co-pilot, or Jesus is my pilot.

  158. Or the heretical version, Jesus is my co-pilot.

  159. You'll find it's all about Jesus on t-shirts and church signs and mugs,

  160. and you name it.

  161. But I wonder, I wonder if you'll find in your bookstore or in your local church parking lot,

  162. I died so that I will live.

  163. I wonder if you'll find I crucified my life,

  164. or I killed myself for life,

  165. or my own life is dead and it is a good thing.

  166. You're not going to find it.

  167. You're not going to find it because these things aren't nice.

  168. They're not uplifting.

  169. But that's exactly what our text is saying this morning.

  170. And it's not just here in Romans.

  171. Jesus Himself spoke of dying to yourself,

  172. picking up your cross.

  173. Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  174. Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  175. Matthew chapter 8,

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  176. Matthew chapter 16,

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  177. all speak to having to die yourself.

  178. It's not something new.

  179. This isn't some new idea.

  180. It's not something abusive or callous or carnal.

  181. It is truth.

  182. The reason it doesn't get taught, though,

  183. is because we, mankind, think we know best.

  184. We think that it will cause more harm than good to speak about dying,

  185. especially ourselves dying while living.

  186. That might even confuse somebody.

  187. But I would rather confuse a little than condemn a lot.

  188. Adam and Eve thought that they knew better.

  189. They thought that I'm going to eat of this fruit and it's going to be okay.

  190. God is just trying to keep us, keep something from us.

  191. So just so there's no misunderstanding, no confusion,

  192. we're not talking about a physical death, but a spiritual death.

  193. So how does this affect us?

  194. How and why does this matter to us?

  195. Well, it begins with God's grace is radical enough to kill us.

  196. Look at some of the language in our text this morning.

  197. Chapter 6, verse 3.

  198. We have words into Christ Jesus or into His death.

  199. Verse 4, we have buried with Him.

  200. Verse 5 says we have been united with Him in a death like His.

  201. Verse 6 says we are crucified with Him.

  202. Verse 8, died with Christ.

  203. See, Paul, as he does often in his letters,

  204. is repeating a theme over and over.

  205. He's repeating himself so that the audience, us,

  206. the readers of this letter,

  207. the early church in Rome,

  208. would grasp what he's trying to communicate.

  209. They would understand what he's trying to say.

  210. And he repeats two things in our text this morning.

  211. One being that we're united with Christ.

  212. Somehow, someway, we are united with Christ.

  213. The other thing is that we have died with Christ.

  214. Somehow, someway.

  215. 115 times in the New Testament,

  216. when describing or talking about Christians,

  217. it is described as in Christ, with Christ,

  218. united with Christ.

  219. And we see it here in our text.

  220. The Christian life is not a certain way to act.

  221. It's not a certain thing to do,

  222. although there is a bit of that.

  223. It's not presenting yourself in a certain way,

  224. although there is a little bit of that.

  225. Both of these, though, acting and presenting,

  226. come out of being united with Christ.

  227. So, we may do good deeds,

  228. but those good deeds are out of being united with Christ

  229. and bearing His righteousness.

  230. So, get the idea out of your head

  231. that you have to act a certain way

  232. or abstain from certain things in life

  233. because none of that makes you a good Christian.

  234. In fact, there's no such thing as a good Christian.

  235. You are united with Him.

  236. His righteousness you bear.

  237. Your sin removed.

  238. Christ has done it all.

  239. See, the life of a Christian is based on what Christ has done

  240. and not what you do

  241. or how you act.

  242. We're also united with Jesus in His death on the cross.

  243. Look at verse 5 and 6 in chapter 6 of Romans.

  244. It says,

  245. For if we have been united with Him in a death like His,

  246. we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His.

  247. We know that our old self,

  248. our old man,

  249. was crucified with Him

  250. in order that the body of sin

  251. might be brought to nothing.

  252. See, we died with Jesus.

  253. Our old self died with Jesus on the cross.

  254. If you are a Christian,

  255. your old self died with Jesus on the cross.

  256. So someone may ask you,

  257. When were you born again?

  258. This came up a couple of weeks ago

  259. at our Q&A on Thursday night.

  260. When were you born again?

  261. Is it important to know the date?

  262. Now you can say 2,000 years ago

  263. is when I was born again.

  264. When Christ died on the cross

  265. and bore my sin.

  266. We are united with Him on the cross

  267. and that killed us,

  268. our sinful nature,

  269. our old self.

  270. Look at these verses again.

  271. In chapter 6, verse 2,

  272. We died to sin.

  273. Verse 3,

  274. Baptized into His death.

  275. Verse 4,

  276. Buried by baptism into death.

  277. Verse 5,

  278. United with Him in a death like His.

  279. Verse 6,

  280. Crucified with Him.

  281. Verse 7,

  282. For one who has died.

  283. Verse 8,

  284. Died with Christ.

  285. Verse 11,

  286. Dead to sin.

  287. See, God's grace

  288. is radical enough

  289. to kill us.

  290. And that's good news.

  291. That's good news.

  292. Here's why it's good news.

  293. The last part of verse 6

  294. that I did not read

  295. says,

  296. So that we would no longer

  297. be enslaved to sin.

  298. We have died to sin.

  299. On the cross,

  300. we have died to that sin.

  301. We are no longer enslaved to sin.

  302. It is no longer our master.

  303. Now, this idea of dying to sin

  304. doesn't mean that sin

  305. no longer exists.

  306. Bad news.

  307. It still exists.

  308. It's still there.

  309. Sin didn't die.

  310. It will die.

  311. It will end.

  312. But it hasn't died.

  313. The believer died.

  314. Sin remains,

  315. but does not reign.

  316. Sin remains,

  317. but does not master you

  318. if you are a Christian,

  319. if you are a child of God.

  320. Our sinful nature

  321. is no longer alive.

  322. It is powerless

  323. to the Christian.

  324. So,

  325. for the Christian

  326. to continue in sin

  327. like verse 1 says,

  328. what shall we say then?

  329. Are we to continue in sin

  330. that grace may abound?

  331. So,

  332. for the Christian

  333. to continue in sin,

  334. in verse 2 it says,

  335. how can we who died to sin

  336. still live in it?

  337. For the Christian

  338. to continue in sin

  339. and to live in sin

  340. is not possible.

  341. It's impossible

  342. for the Christian.

  343. That part of you

  344. is dead.

  345. And dead people

  346. can't sin.

  347. Paul is telling us

  348. that if you are

  349. truly born again,

  350. if you have tasted

  351. the freedom

  352. from the tyranny

  353. of sin,

  354. you will not

  355. and cannot continue

  356. in sin.

  357. You cannot live

  358. a life of sin.

  359. Your life will not

  360. be ruled

  361. by temporary pleasures.

  362. Your life will not

  363. be consumed

  364. by pornography.

  365. Your life will not

  366. be consumed

  367. by material possessions

  368. that you don't have.

  369. Your life will not

  370. be consumed

  371. by pleasing

  372. and or fearing

  373. people.

  374. your life will not

  375. be consumed

  376. by your addictions

  377. to drugs,

  378. alcohol,

  379. sex,

  380. food.

  381. Your life will not

  382. be consumed

  383. by selfishness.

  384. Your life will not

  385. be consumed

  386. by always being

  387. the victim.

  388. And your life

  389. will not be consumed

  390. by conforming

  391. to what others

  392. are doing,

  393. saying,

  394. or buying.

  395. To the radical

  396. grace of God

  397. changes your being.

  398. And out of your being,

  399. being changed,

  400. your behavior

  401. then changes.

  402. God's radical grace

  403. gives you a new heart,

  404. a new life,

  405. and is no longer

  406. mastered by sin.

  407. So here are three

  408. implications of being

  409. dead to sin.

  410. The first one,

  411. first implication

  412. is that sin

  413. is voluntary.

  414. Sin is voluntary.

  415. So,

  416. before you were

  417. a Christian,

  418. if you're not

  419. a Christian,

  420. then this applies

  421. to you.

  422. There was no

  423. decision for you

  424. to make regarding

  425. whether or not

  426. you were going

  427. to sin.

  428. There wasn't a choice

  429. to be made

  430. in your head,

  431. in your life.

  432. You were going to sin.

  433. That's what you did.

  434. It was like breathing

  435. for us.

  436. We just breathe.

  437. We don't think

  438. about breathing.

  439. We just do it.

  440. And for the non-Christian,

  441. we just sin.

  442. We just live

  443. sinful lives.

  444. See,

  445. as a non-Christian,

  446. you were ruled

  447. by sin,

  448. which means

  449. everything you did

  450. was under the rule

  451. and reign

  452. of sin.

  453. You were a slave

  454. to it.

  455. You had one master

  456. and its name

  457. was sin.

  458. There's a

  459. saying out there

  460. that I sin

  461. because I'm a sinner

  462. or I'm a sinner

  463. because I sin.

  464. Which one is it?

  465. Well,

  466. you sin

  467. because you are

  468. a sinner,

  469. not the other way

  470. around as an unbeliever.

  471. As a Christian

  472. whose sin nature

  473. has died,

  474. all sin committed

  475. is voluntary

  476. on your part,

  477. on my part.

  478. All sin

  479. is voluntary

  480. because it no longer

  481. has power.

  482. It no longer

  483. has master.

  484. It masters over you.

  485. You volunteer

  486. to sin

  487. and in so doing

  488. cause yourself

  489. to be consumed

  490. by that sin.

  491. that in all reality

  492. is powerless.

  493. So not only

  494. is sin voluntary,

  495. but implication

  496. number two,

  497. sin is temporary.

  498. See,

  499. when we're faced

  500. with a temptation,

  501. when we're in that

  502. moment,

  503. when we're

  504. seconds or minutes

  505. before volunteering

  506. to sin,

  507. the lies we choose

  508. to believe

  509. or are faced

  510. with are something

  511. like this.

  512. God is not worth it.

  513. God is not real.

  514. God is busy.

  515. God is holding

  516. certain things

  517. from you.

  518. God is cruel

  519. and He doesn't care

  520. about your life.

  521. God wants you

  522. to celebrate

  523. and take pleasure

  524. in His creation,

  525. whatever that may be.

  526. God is not

  527. and it does not

  528. bring God glory

  529. and it certainly

  530. does not bring

  531. us joy.

  532. See,

  533. sin is enjoyable.

  534. I'm not telling you

  535. anything you don't know.

  536. There's a time

  537. for a moment.

  538. It might be a second.

  539. It might be a minute.

  540. But in the end,

  541. that enjoyable feeling

  542. ends

  543. and you are faced

  544. with the reality

  545. of being enslaved

  546. to sin.

  547. Which is what

  548. Jesus died

  549. to remove.

  550. You've been set

  551. free from sin,

  552. not temporarily,

  553. not as long

  554. as you're good,

  555. not as long

  556. as you read

  557. your Bible

  558. every day.

  559. You've been

  560. set free

  561. from sin

  562. forever.

  563. We have died

  564. to sin

  565. forever.

  566. It no longer

  567. will have power

  568. to defeat you

  569. because

  570. 1 John says

  571. He who is in you

  572. is greater

  573. than he

  574. who is in the world.

  575. So,

  576. implication number

  577. three.

  578. And this goes

  579. without saying

  580. because our text

  581. says it,

  582. but sin

  583. is weak.

  584. Sin no longer

  585. has reign over us,

  586. but it still

  587. exists.

  588. It's still there.

  589. We must look

  590. to the cross

  591. and find our strength

  592. there

  593. to overcome.

  594. There are going

  595. to be struggles.

  596. There are going

  597. to be moments

  598. of weakness

  599. in our lives.

  600. But we have

  601. got to remember

  602. that sin

  603. has no power

  604. over us.

  605. Jesus has defeated

  606. death and sin.

  607. Look at verse 6

  608. of chapter 6.

  609. We know

  610. that our old self

  611. was crucified

  612. with Him

  613. in order

  614. that the body

  615. of sin

  616. might be brought

  617. to nothing.

  618. Our old self

  619. has been brought

  620. to nothing.

  621. No power.

  622. No dominion.

  623. No strength.

  624. And yet,

  625. we give it power.

  626. And yet,

  627. we give it strength.

  628. We give it dominion

  629. over us

  630. when we choose

  631. to sin.

  632. let your life

  633. be a celebration

  634. of God's grace.

  635. Let your life

  636. be rejoicing

  637. in God's radical

  638. grace

  639. that He has shown

  640. you.

  641. That His radical

  642. grace

  643. kills you

  644. instead

  645. of what

  646. verse 1

  647. is alluding

  648. to,

  649. abusing

  650. God's grace.

  651. His radical

  652. grace.

  653. So not only

  654. is God's grace

  655. radical enough

  656. to kill us,

  657. it is also

  658. radical enough

  659. to give

  660. life.

  661. Follow me

  662. through these

  663. verses.

  664. Verse 4

  665. says,

  666. we too

  667. might walk

  668. in newness

  669. of life.

  670. Verse 5

  671. Be united

  672. with Him

  673. in a resurrection

  674. like His.

  675. A new life.

  676. Verse 6

  677. A new life

  678. looks like

  679. no longer

  680. being enslaved

  681. to sin.

  682. Verse 8

  683. We believe

  684. that we also

  685. live with Him.

  686. Verse 11

  687. Alive

  688. to God

  689. in Christ

  690. Jesus.

  691. Galatians 2

  692. 20 says,

  693. I have been

  694. crucified

  695. with Christ.

  696. It is no

  697. longer I

  698. who live

  699. but Christ

  700. who lives

  701. in me.

  702. We have been

  703. crucified

  704. with Christ

  705. and that sin

  706. no longer

  707. exists.

  708. But the second

  709. part of that

  710. verse,

  711. it is no

  712. longer I

  713. who live

  714. but Christ

  715. who lives

  716. in me.

  717. This is a

  718. reality.

  719. This is real.

  720. Christ

  721. lives in us

  722. and gives us

  723. a new

  724. life.

  725. Back to

  726. Romans 6

    Romans 6:2

  727. verse 2

  728. We have the

  729. question in

  730. verse 1

  731. It says,

  732. What shall we

  733. say then?

  734. Are we to

  735. continue in

  736. sin that

  737. grace may

  738. abound?

  739. His answer

  740. of course

  741. is by no

  742. means.

  743. May it

  744. not be

  745. so.

  746. No.

  747. Impossible.

  748. Then he

  749. answers with a

  750. rhetorical

  751. question.

  752. How can we

  753. who died to

  754. sin still

  755. live in it?

  756. In other words,

  757. it is impossible

  758. to do so.

  759. It is

  760. impossible.

  761. You can't

  762. because you

  763. have been

  764. given a

  765. new life.

  766. And that

  767. new life

  768. cannot be

  769. dead again.

  770. It doesn't

  771. happen.

  772. See,

  773. once you've

  774. been made

  775. alive by

  776. God,

  777. you cannot

  778. continue in

  779. sin.

  780. It is

  781. impossible.

  782. We have

  783. been given

  784. a new

  785. life.

  786. It is

  787. impossible

  788. to live

  789. in sin.

  790. Impossible

  791. to live

  792. without

  793. conviction,

  794. without

  795. repentance,

  796. without

  797. confession.

  798. I'm

  799. repeating

  800. myself

  801. because I

  802. want to

  803. make sure

  804. we

  805. understand.

  806. It is

  807. impossible

  808. to be a

  809. Christian and

  810. to live

  811. in sin.

  812. Now,

  813. it's possible

  814. to be a

  815. Christian and

  816. sin,

  817. but not to

  818. live in

  819. sin.

  820. Not to

  821. have a

  822. life

  823. consumed

  824. and mastered

  825. by sin.

  826. So the

  827. question is,

  828. right here,

  829. right now,

  830. is your

  831. life mastered

  832. by sin

  833. or not?

  834. Are you

  835. living in

  836. sin or

  837. not?

  838. You

  839. guys

  840. seen the

  841. guy who

  842. spins

  843. plates,

  844. you'll

  845. know what

  846. I'm

  847. talking

  848. about?

  849. He

  850. spins

  851. plates on

  852. a stick

  853. and on

  854. his other

  855. hand and

  856. on his

  857. knees and

  858. on his

  859. head.

  860. I don't

  861. know how

  862. many plates,

  863. but there's

  864. just tons

  865. of plates.

  866. He starts

  867. stacking them

  868. and they're

  869. spinning and

  870. spinning.

  871. Eventually,

  872. at some

  873. point,

  874. he's going

  875. to run

  876. out of

  877. being able

  878. to spin

  879. plates and

  880. then they

  881. all come

  882. crashing down.

  883. Whether that's

  884. the Guinness

  885. Book of

  886. World Record,

  887. who cares

  888. really?

  889. But it

  890. gets to a

  891. point where

  892. he can't

  893. spin any

  894. more plates.

  895. We make

  896. the Christian

  897. life out to

  898. be spinning

  899. plates.

  900. If I do

  901. this,

  902. if I read

  903. my Bible and

  904. I say a

  905. prayer before

  906. bed and

  907. after meals

  908. or before

  909. meals,

  910. I

  911. share my

  912. faith with

  913. somebody,

  914. if I

  915. talk about

  916. Jesus,

  917. if I

  918. listen to

  919. Christian

  920. music and

  921. wear Christian

  922. t-shirts,

  923. and if I

  924. do this,

  925. and if I

  926. do that,

  927. and if I

  928. do these

  929. things,

  930. if I go to

  931. Bible study,

  932. if I go to

  933. Thursday night

  934. Bible study,

  935. and I'm at

  936. community group

  937. on Wednesday,

  938. and I'm Sunday

  939. night Bible study,

  940. and I sit down

  941. on Sunday

  942. morning at a

  943. church,

  944. and we

  945. try to do

  946. all these

  947. things,

  948. and eventually,

  949. if that's

  950. what our

  951. Christian life

  952. is,

  953. if that's

  954. what we

  955. think it

  956. is in

  957. our head,

  958. eventually,

  959. we're going

  960. to run

  961. out of

  962. the ability

  963. to spin

  964. plates.

  965. Our

  966. Christianity,

  967. our life,

  968. our religion

  969. will be based

  970. in self-effort

  971. and not in

  972. grace.

  973. Here's the

  974. problem.

  975. If this

  976. happens,

  977. if your

  978. Christian life

  979. is based

  980. not on

  981. grace,

  982. not on

  983. God's

  984. radical

  985. grace,

  986. but based

  987. on your

  988. self-effort,

  989. when you

  990. fail,

  991. however

  992. many

  993. times that

  994. is,

  995. eventually,

  996. you're going

  997. to quit.

  998. Eventually,

  999. you're going

  1000. to say,

  1001. it's too

  1002. hard.

  1003. And it

  1004. happens because

  1005. we fail to

  1006. understand God's

  1007. radical grace.

  1008. We fail to

  1009. understand what

  1010. He has done

  1011. for us.

  1012. So,

  1013. living in

  1014. sin is not

  1015. possible to

  1016. avoid on

  1017. your own

  1018. merit.

  1019. sin.

  1020. It's not

  1021. possible to

  1022. say,

  1023. I am

  1024. not going

  1025. to live

  1026. in sin.

  1027. It's

  1028. impossible.

  1029. No matter

  1030. how good

  1031. you strive

  1032. to be,

  1033. you cannot

  1034. avoid living

  1035. in sin

  1036. outside of

  1037. Christ,

  1038. outside of

  1039. His grace,

  1040. His saving

  1041. grace.

  1042. But since

  1043. you have a

  1044. new life,

  1045. since you

  1046. are born

  1047. again,

  1048. you've been

  1049. reborn,

  1050. you've been

  1051. resurrected,

  1052. as verse

  1053. 5 says,

  1054. because of

  1055. Jesus and

  1056. His grace,

  1057. you don't

  1058. just avoid

  1059. living in

  1060. sin,

  1061. it becomes

  1062. an impossibility.

  1063. And you

  1064. can stop

  1065. trying to

  1066. spin plates.

  1067. We receive

  1068. life through

  1069. the life,

  1070. death,

  1071. and resurrection

  1072. of Jesus

  1073. Christ,

  1074. and we are

  1075. given a

  1076. completely

  1077. secured

  1078. new life

  1079. in Him.

  1080. And we

  1081. no longer

  1082. are enslaved

  1083. to sin,

  1084. we are no

  1085. longer hindered

  1086. by chains

  1087. of sin,

  1088. but free,

  1089. free to be

  1090. sinless,

  1091. free to live

  1092. perfect lives.

  1093. Look at

  1094. verse 10.

  1095. It says,

  1096. for the death

  1097. He died,

  1098. He died to

  1099. sin,

  1100. once for

  1101. all He

  1102. being Jesus,

  1103. for the life

  1104. He lives,

  1105. He lives

  1106. to God.

  1107. Jesus is

  1108. our friend,

  1109. He is our

  1110. advocate,

  1111. and He is

  1112. our example.

  1113. Jesus lives

  1114. for the glory

  1115. of God.

  1116. He,

  1117. from His own

  1118. words in

  1119. the book of

  1120. John,

  1121. says,

  1122. I live

  1123. for the glory

  1124. of the Father.

  1125. I do what

  1126. I see the

  1127. Father doing

  1128. repeated over

  1129. and over.

  1130. If Jesus

  1131. is our

  1132. example,

  1133. then our

  1134. lives live

  1135. for the glory

  1136. of God.

  1137. In other

  1138. words,

  1139. we bring

  1140. glory to

  1141. God when

  1142. we don't

  1143. give in to

  1144. temptation.

  1145. We bring

  1146. glory to

  1147. God when

  1148. we choose

  1149. to cling

  1150. to the

  1151. cross.

  1152. We bring

  1153. glory to

  1154. God when

  1155. we turn

  1156. the TV

  1157. off when

  1158. that show

  1159. comes on.

  1160. We bring

  1161. glory to

  1162. God when

  1163. we don't

  1164. visit that

  1165. website.

  1166. We bring

  1167. glory to

  1168. God when

  1169. we are

  1170. content in

  1171. our

  1172. situation.

  1173. We bring

  1174. glory to

  1175. God when

  1176. we lay

  1177. our

  1178. burdens

  1179. at His

  1180. feet.

  1181. We bring

  1182. glory to

  1183. God when

  1184. the gossip

  1185. stops.

  1186. We bring

  1187. glory to

  1188. God when

  1189. we love

  1190. our wives

  1191. as Christ

  1192. loved the

  1193. church.

  1194. We bring

  1195. glory to

  1196. God when

  1197. we work

  1198. to our

  1199. fullest

  1200. potential.

  1201. We bring

  1202. glory to

  1203. God when

  1204. we treasure

  1205. Christ.

  1206. We bring

  1207. glory to

  1208. God when

  1209. we admit

  1210. our weaknesses

  1211. and beg

  1212. Him for

  1213. help.

  1214. God's

  1215. radical

  1216. grace gives

  1217. us a

  1218. new life.

  1219. A new

  1220. life where

  1221. we can

  1222. bring glory

  1223. to God.

  1224. This new

  1225. life that

  1226. you've been

  1227. given is

  1228. dead to

  1229. sin.

  1230. Give God

  1231. glory with

  1232. your lives

  1233. not just

  1234. in the

  1235. knowledge or

  1236. theology that

  1237. you carry

  1238. with you.

  1239. This new

  1240. life will

  1241. no longer

  1242. die.

  1243. Give God

  1244. glory with

  1245. your entire

  1246. life and

  1247. not just

  1248. your Sunday

  1249. morning when

  1250. you attend

  1251. a church

  1252. gathering.

  1253. This new

  1254. life is free

  1255. from being

  1256. mastered by

  1257. sin.

  1258. Give God

  1259. glory with

  1260. your life,

  1261. not just

  1262. when you

  1263. experience

  1264. something

  1265. emotional.

  1266. This new

  1267. life is

  1268. secured by

  1269. Jesus.

  1270. Give God

  1271. glory this

  1272. morning by

  1273. repenting

  1274. from your

  1275. self-effort
