  1. We've been studying through the book of Romans.

  2. We're in Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  3. ! The last few verses of the chapter.

  4. Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  5. That's a hard song to follow.

  6. I'm just going to say it.

  7. Alright, we're equal.

  8. Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  9. I'll start reading in verse 19 through the end of the chapter.

  10. Paul is writing to the church in Rome.

  11. He writes and he says,

  12. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations.

  13. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity

  14. and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness,

  15. so now present your members as slaves to righteousness

  16. leading to sanctification.

  17. For when you were slaves of sin,

  18. you were free in regard to righteousness.

  19. But what fruit were you getting at that time

  20. from the things of which you are now ashamed?

  21. For the end of these things is death.

  22. But now that you have been set free from sin

  23. and have become slaves of God,

  24. the fruit you get leads to sanctification

  25. and it's in eternal life.

  26. For the wages of sin is death.

  27. The free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus,

  28. our Lord.

  29. Let's pray together.

  30. Father, we thank you for Jesus.

  31. We thank you for the grace and the mercy

  32. that you've shown us through him,

  33. through his life, his death, and his resurrection.

  34. We thank you for your word that you have revealed to us,

  35. that you have shown us,

  36. so we can hold in our hands and read.

  37. We thank you that your word speaks of Jesus,

  38. shows us about Jesus,

  39. teaches us Jesus.

  40. I pray this morning that we prove with the word spoken

  41. and the ears of listening that we love Jesus.

  42. I pray, God, that we would honor him,

  43. lift him up,

  44. and he would receive all praise this morning.

  45. Speak to us this morning in Jesus' name.

  46. Amen.

  47. Now, I'm going to approach this text a little different.

  48. Usually it's verse by verse.

  49. This is what it's saying.

  50. This is what it means.

  51. I'm still going to be faithful to it,

  52. but I want to look at how does being set free,

  53. we've been set free in Christ

  54. from the power and burden and control of sin,

  55. how does that affect our gathering?

  56. How does that affect this meeting time,

  57. our meetings during the week,

  58. our meetings with families

  59. or one-on-one discipleship?

  60. How does being set free really affect our lives?

  61. Because theologically and doctrinally,

  62. we can say it all along,

  63. every moment of every day,

  64. but how does it affect our everyday life

  65. and in specific,

  66. us here together?

  67. In other words,

  68. so what?

  69. So we've been set free.

  70. So what?

  71. What does it mean?

  72. What does it lead us to?

  73. So we have sin in our life

  74. that no longer has power over us.

  75. What do we do with that?

  76. And why does the fact that we have been set free from sin

  77. and now have been made slave to God

  78. impact us and our gathering together?

  79. This is the question that I want to answer this morning.

  80. The easy answer,

  81. the simple answer is in every way.

  82. In every way it changes,

  83. it impacts our gathering.

  84. In every way,

  85. in how we speak,

  86. in how we sing,

  87. in how we gather,

  88. in how we care for one another,

  89. in how we look at one another,

  90. how we listen to one another.

  91. In every way is a simple answer.

  92. So let's get a little more specific.

  93. And in our text,

  94. I think we have a little more specific answer.

  95. If we've been set free,

  96. if our identity has changed,

  97. if we're no longer slave to sin,

  98. but slave to God,

  99. then our identity has changed.

  100. Because if our identity has changed,

  101. then what we do,

  102. how we live,

  103. and why we gather changes as well.

  104. So no matter how mature you are as a Christian,

  105. you know how much knowledge you have,

  106. or I have,

  107. we all need help in this endeavor

  108. to live out this Christian life.

  109. We all need help.

  110. None of us have figured this out.

  111. None of us have perfected it.

  112. Paul himself says,

  113. I am not yet perfect.

  114. I continue on forward.

  115. We need one another

  116. to preach the Gospel to us,

  117. to remind us that we are set free from sin,

  118. and to etch into one another's minds

  119. that this gathering is not about us.

  120. It's about Jesus.

  121. Joy to the world

  122. is about Jesus,

  123. not about us.

  124. So as I review,

  125. Romans 1 and 2,

  126. divine for us,

  127. clearly,

  128. that all human beings,

  129. then and now,

  130. have been born into a curse.

  131. We are dead.

  132. Curse that goes all the way back

  133. to Adam and Eve

  134. in the Garden of Eden.

  135. Adam and Eve bought into the lie

  136. that the devil gave them,

  137. bought into the lie

  138. that they can be important,

  139. that they can be special,

  140. that they can be like God,

  141. and they decided to worship themselves

  142. instead of worshiping God

  143. as they were created to do.

  144. As we are today,

  145. they were created to worship God,

  146. to bring glory to God.

  147. As our Logos question number two says,

  148. the adult version is,

  149. what is the chief end of man?

  150. To glorify Him

  151. and enjoy Him forever.

  152. That's what we were created to do.

  153. We were created to worship Him alone.

  154. And from this moment

  155. in the Garden of Eden,

  156. through all of eternity,

  157. mankind,

  158. and all of time,

  159. mankind has been cursed

  160. with the inability to worship God.

  161. We've been cursed

  162. with the inability to please God,

  163. to do God things.

  164. We cannot worship Him

  165. apart from a supernatural act of God.

  166. So we come to Romans 3,

  167. and it says,

  168. for all have sinned

  169. and fall short of the glory of God.

  170. All of us have sinned.

  171. No one is left out of that equation.

  172. We are unable to bring glory to God.

  173. We are unable

  174. to do good,

  175. God-glorifying things.

  176. Now of course,

  177. semantics,

  178. we can do good things.

  179. We can do nice things.

  180. We can be nice human beings

  181. and care for people

  182. and love people,

  183. but we cannot do God-honoring,

  184. God-glorifying things.

  185. We cannot enjoy Him

  186. as we were created to do.

  187. Even religious things

  188. are like filthy rags.

  189. We weren't created to be religious.

  190. We weren't created to be Baptists,

  191. although some people might say we were.

  192. We weren't created to be Methodists,

  193. or Presbyterians.

  194. We were created to be God's people,

  195. His children,

  196. and whatever name you want to put to that.

  197. That's what we were created to be.

  198. Religion was created by man

  199. to replace God,

  200. to make where we have no need for Him.

  201. And if there's no need for God,

  202. then our curse that we are born into

  203. no longer has powers,

  204. no longer as powerful as we thought.

  205. And then we can fix that issue

  206. with good deeds or religious activities.

  207. But that's not the case.

  208. Romans 1, 2, and 3,

  209. and then building up to chapter 4,

  210. all of it proves

  211. that even religion does not save.

  212. Chapter 4,

  213. we have Abraham,

  214. who's been justified,

  215. Paul lays out for us

  216. that Abraham was justified by faith,

  217. not by anything else,

  218. not by works,

  219. not by religious activity,

  220. no special bloodline,

  221. no being the patriarch of the Jewish people.

  222. That didn't save him.

  223. What saved him was his faith

  224. or faith from God.

  225. He was justified by faith.

  226. No religious activity,

  227. no good deed.

  228. Abraham did not earn

  229. his faith.

  230. He did not earn

  231. the salvation that he received.

  232. Romans 4,

    Romans 4:20

  233. verse 20 and 21 says,

  234. of Abraham,

  235. no distrust made him waver

  236. concerning the promise of God.

  237. But he grew strong in his faith

  238. as he gave glory to God,

  239. fully convinced that God was able to do

  240. what he had promised.

  241. So this amazing faith

  242. that Abraham showed

  243. was nothing of his doing

  244. or his ability.

  245. It was all based and rooted

  246. on who God is

  247. and what God has promised.

  248. What God said that He would do.

  249. This same faith can be evident

  250. in your life and in mine.

  251. But like Abraham,

  252. it is God working through us.

  253. just earlier in Romans 4,

  254. faith wasn't given to Adam

  255. and he wasn't made righteous

  256. because of being circumcised.

  257. And I point that out

  258. because that is the one

  259. religious activity

  260. of the Jewish people

  261. that was important.

  262. That was it.

  263. It proved to the world

  264. that they were Jewish.

  265. It proved to them

  266. that they belonged

  267. to God's chosen people.

  268. And even Abraham,

  269. who was the patriarch,

  270. was not made righteous

  271. because of being circumcised.

  272. Made righteous because of his faith.

  273. So, to summarize,

  274. we are justified by faith

  275. apart from works.

  276. It's a good Christian saying,

  277. but it's very important.

  278. We are justified by faith

  279. apart from works.

  280. So, nothing in us

  281. earns, deserves

  282. the salvation that God gives us.

  283. This is the launching point.

  284. This truth,

  285. justified by faith

  286. apart from works,

  287. that's the launching point

  288. for all of Romans.

  289. As Paul writes

  290. to the Christian church,

  291. to the church in Rome,

  292. to the Christians there,

  293. he writes to them

  294. and he says,

  295. as Abraham,

  296. you too can be justified by faith.

  297. Not anything that you have done.

  298. You haven't earned it.

  299. Everything we are and do

  300. is out of being justified.

  301. Being made right before God

  302. because of his love,

  303. his grace,

  304. and his mercy.

  305. We've got to make sure

  306. we understand this.

  307. And on the cross

  308. is where we've been justified.

  309. On the cross

  310. is where our sins

  311. were taken

  312. by Jesus.

  313. And in return,

  314. we are given

  315. his righteousness.

  316. Martin Luther calls

  317. the great exchange

  318. and we mention it

  319. often.

  320. Jesus took our sin

  321. and gave us

  322. his righteousness.

  323. This

  324. is the launching point.

  325. See,

  326. at the cross,

  327. we find victory

  328. over sin.

  329. At the cross,

  330. we are set free

  331. from that same sin.

  332. At the cross,

  333. we are given peace

  334. with God.

  335. Because of the cross,

  336. we can approach

  337. the throne room

  338. with boldness.

  339. Because of the cross,

  340. we live victorious lives.

  341. Because of the cross,

  342. we love our neighbors.

  343. See,

  344. all of what we are

  345. and do as Christians

  346. because and through

  347. the cross of Jesus Christ.

  348. At Calvary,

  349. where He died for you

  350. and for me.

  351. That's where

  352. it all comes from.

  353. John Piper,

  354. in his book,

  355. The Roots of Endurance,

  356. is writing about

  357. William Wilberforce,

  358. John Newton,

  359. and Charles Stimeon.

  360. Three great men of,

  361. as we sometimes say,

  362. old dead guys.

  363. Great men of faith.

  364. He writes about them

  365. and he says,

  366. they were careful

  367. to savor the cross first

  368. as the basis of justification

  369. before they experienced

  370. its purchased power

  371. of sanctification.

  372. Before the power of endurance

  373. came the pardon of guilt.

  374. Before the blood-bought enabling

  375. of righteous living

  376. came the free gift

  377. of perfect righteousness

  378. credited to our account

  379. because of Christ alone

  380. through faith alone.

  381. These men,

  382. we can lift them up,

  383. but they're just men.

  384. These men knew

  385. that what we do

  386. is secondary

  387. to what Christ did

  388. on the cross.

  389. What Christ did

  390. on the cross

  391. determines what we do here.

  392. So out of what Christ did,

  393. we now live for Him.

  394. Justification is the launch point

  395. for Romans

  396. and for the Christian life.

  397. So we now come to chapter 6.

  398. On the cross,

  399. our sin nature died with Jesus.

  400. If we are Christian,

  401. if we are believers,

  402. if we are a biblical definition

  403. of being a Christian,

  404. if you know when you love Jesus,

  405. then you have been set free

  406. on the cross

  407. from the control

  408. and bondage of sin.

  409. And now,

  410. in our text,

  411. we have the outcome

  412. of being set free.

  413. We have the outcome

  414. of no longer being empowered

  415. or no longer being powered over

  416. by sin.

  417. And that outcome is

  418. sanctification and holiness.

  419. Or sanctification

  420. or holiness.

  421. The infinitely holy God

  422. through Christ

  423. has given us

  424. His holiness.

  425. It is a process.

  426. A long process.

  427. A slow process.

  428. But we are being perfected

  429. because of Christ.

  430. Because of His work

  431. on the cross.

  432. We can be holy

  433. as He commanded.

  434. Be holy

  435. as I am holy.

  436. We can be holy

  437. as God is holy

  438. because of Jesus.

  439. Later on in the book,

  440. John Piper says

  441. of the time

  442. that William Wilberforce lived,

  443. he said,

  444. nominal Christians

  445. were confusing

  446. and reversing

  447. sanctification

  448. and justification.

  449. They were making

  450. the fruits of holiness

  451. the cause

  452. and not the effects

  453. of being justified.

  454. What the whole

  455. beginning part of Romans

  456. is about up to this point

  457. is out of being justified

  458. we are becoming sanctified.

  459. Out of what Christ has done

  460. we are able to live

  461. a certain and specific way.

  462. Sounds a lot like our time,

  463. doesn't it?

  464. We know people

  465. who are trying to live

  466. good lives.

  467. People who are trying

  468. to be religious.

  469. We are surrounded

  470. by nominal Christians

  471. or non-Christians

  472. at all

  473. believe that they

  474. have to live

  475. a good life.

  476. They just have to be good

  477. in order to earn

  478. God's favor.

  479. But we know

  480. that that is not

  481. the case at all.

  482. We don't want

  483. this building,

  484. we don't want

  485. this gathering

  486. to be filled

  487. with people

  488. who are nominal

  489. Christians

  490. who think they have

  491. to earn God's grace.

  492. That wouldn't be

  493. grace at all.

  494. And there is no victory

  495. in that life.

  496. That is a life

  497. of slavery,

  498. of burden,

  499. trying to earn

  500. God's favor

  501. and God's grace.

  502. We want to lead

  503. people who love

  504. out of joy,

  505. who gather

  506. out of joy

  507. and who bless

  508. out of joy,

  509. not out of obligation

  510. or out of some

  511. form of payment

  512. to God.

  513. So as we look

  514. at our text

  515. this morning,

  516. so what?

  517. So what does

  518. this mean?

  519. What does

  520. this mean

  521. about how

  522. we gather?

  523. We have been

  524. set free,

  525. so what?

  526. Well,

  527. as I've kind

  528. of set us up,

  529. we can't go

  530. any further

  531. without completely

  532. and totally

  533. understanding

  534. verse 23

  535. of chapter 6.

  536. We have to get it,

  537. understand it,

  538. know it.

  539. Verse 23 says,

  540. for the wages

  541. of sin is death,

  542. but the free

  543. gift of God

  544. is eternal life

  545. in Christ Jesus

  546. our Lord.

  547. Wages of sin.

  548. There is a payment

  549. to be paid.

  550. Our sin

  551. earns a payment.

  552. It earns a paycheck.

  553. So sin is working

  554. against you

  555. and against me

  556. and as it works,

  557. it's earning its wage

  558. or earning a wage.

  559. Sin doesn't just

  560. deserve death.

  561. Sometimes we'll say,

  562. you know,

  563. sin deserves death.

  564. Deserve

  565. leaves room

  566. for subjectivity.

  567. It leaves room

  568. for

  569. a little play,

  570. too much play.

  571. According to our text,

  572. the wages of sin,

  573. sin earns,

  574. there's a clear

  575. payment exchange

  576. there.

  577. It's wage

  578. and the wage

  579. is death.

  580. And it's not

  581. talking about

  582. you dying

  583. here on earth.

  584. It's talking about

  585. eternal,

  586. permanent

  587. separation

  588. from God.

  589. Everything God

  590. does is good.

  591. Everything God

  592. does is right.

  593. Everything God

  594. does is holy

  595. and just.

  596. You're going to

  597. be separated

  598. from that

  599. eternally

  600. because of the

  601. sin in your life,

  602. because of your

  603. sin,

  604. if you do not

  605. know Christ,

  606. if you do not

  607. love Him.

  608. this is the

  609. reality of our

  610. curse that we're

  611. born into.

  612. We receive,

  613. we're born into

  614. this curse

  615. by the second

  616. part of verse

  617. 23.

  618. But,

  619. the free gift

  620. of God

  621. is eternal

  622. life in Christ

  623. Jesus our

  624. Lord.

  625. We receive a

  626. gift,

  627. an undeserved

  628. gift from the

  629. Creator.

  630. That is eternal

  631. life.

  632. Eternal life in

  633. Christ.

  634. He's because of

  635. Jesus.

  636. In Jesus and

  637. for Jesus,

  638. our lives are

  639. all about

  640. Jesus.

  641. That's why our

  642. vision statement

  643. is not up there.

  644. Christ's Family

  645. Church exists to

  646. experience,

  647. proclaim,

  648. and display the

  649. supremacy of

  650. Jesus Christ in

  651. all things.

  652. Our lives are

  653. all about

  654. Jesus.

  655. Our gatherings

  656. are all about

  657. Jesus.

  658. Our entire

  659. life is about

  660. Him.

  661. So,

  662. we move from

  663. verse 23.

  664. We got verse

  665. 23.

  666. We have to

  667. understand verse

  668. 23.

  669. And then out of

  670. that,

  671. so what?

  672. So what do

  673. we do?

  674. Because we are

  675. recipients of

  676. this gift from

  677. a holy God,

  678. our identity

  679. changes.

  680. As I mentioned

  681. a few minutes

  682. ago, we're no

  683. longer slaves to

  684. sin if we are

  685. Christians, if we

  686. are born-again

  687. believers.

  688. we are now

  689. slaves to God.

  690. And that is a

  691. complete identity

  692. change.

  693. Ephesians chapter

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  694. 2 says you

  695. were dead.

  696. You're now

  697. alive.

  698. That's a big

  699. identity change.

  700. See, at that

  701. moment of being

  702. justified, being

  703. born again, our

  704. identity changes.

  705. verse 19 of

  706. Romans chapter 6

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  707. says, for just

  708. as you once

  709. presented your

  710. members as

  711. slaves to

  712. impurity and

  713. to lawlessness

  714. leading to more

  715. lawlessness.

  716. See, before

  717. Jesus, our

  718. identity was in

  719. what we did.

  720. Sin.

  721. And I don't

  722. mean, you

  723. know, your

  724. sports

  725. accomplishments,

  726. your life

  727. accomplishments,

  728. your struggles.

  729. It was in how

  730. we lived, what

  731. we did, what

  732. determined what

  733. we did, and

  734. that was sin.

  735. That was where

  736. our identity

  737. was.

  738. According to

  739. this, impurity

  740. and lawlessness

  741. was your

  742. identity, was

  743. our identity

  744. before Christ.

  745. Impurity

  746. represents the

  747. inward sin,

  748. the thoughts,

  749. the lust,

  750. the judgment,

  751. the hatred,

  752. the anger,

  753. the vanity.

  754. We have those

  755. inward sins that

  756. nobody might

  757. see.

  758. We can hide

  759. those.

  760. But lawlessness

  761. represents the

  762. outward sin,

  763. the actions,

  764. the murder,

  765. the malice,

  766. the hatred,

  767. the homosexuality,

  768. the fornication,

  769. on and on and

  770. on.

  771. Both of those

  772. lists.

  773. We could go on

  774. and on and

  775. on.

  776. That's who we

  777. were.

  778. That's what our

  779. identity was and

  780. what we did.

  781. But after

  782. Jesus, we

  783. become slaves to

  784. righteousness

  785. leading to

  786. sanctification.

  787. holiness.

  788. See, our

  789. identity is not

  790. under the power

  791. of sin anymore.

  792. It is now

  793. becoming empowered

  794. by God

  795. leading to

  796. holiness.

  797. See, as the

  798. nominal Christians

  799. did and

  800. thought and

  801. will before us

  802. time, we are

  803. holy out of what

  804. Jesus did, not

  805. on what we do

  806. or try to do.

  807. When our

  808. identity changes,

  809. what we live

  810. for changes.

  811. What we

  812. desire changes.

  813. For example,

  814. if I became a

  815. Muslim,

  816. if I decided I'm

  817. going to become a

  818. Muslim, I like

  819. their ideas and I

  820. like how the

  821. Quran is spelled

  822. a little weird

  823. and I just like

  824. it.

  825. my identity,

  826. who I was,

  827. would change.

  828. It would

  829. obviously change.

  830. I don't even

  831. know half the

  832. laws and stuff

  833. they have, but I

  834. follow them.

  835. But

  836. what I live for

  837. would change.

  838. That identity

  839. would determine

  840. how I lived.

  841. as a Christian

  842. though, my

  843. identity is

  844. Jesus.

  845. It's for

  846. Jesus, through

  847. Jesus, and so

  848. I live for

  849. Jesus and His

  850. glory.

  851. So when we

  852. gather together,

  853. big group,

  854. small group,

  855. morning service,

  856. community group

  857. in midweek,

  858. families over a

  859. meal, a one-on-one

  860. discipleship,

  861. whatever it is,

  862. when we meet

  863. together, we

  864. unite over our

  865. identity.

  866. We unite over

  867. what binds us

  868. together, and

  869. that is Jesus.

  870. That is His

  871. righteousness, His

  872. holiness.

  873. We unite over

  874. what Jesus did

  875. for us.

  876. 2 Corinthians 5

  877. says that His

  878. love compels

  879. us.

  880. We are

  881. compelled to

  882. live for

  883. Him.

  884. And

  885. honestly,

  886. no matter what

  887. that means or

  888. looks like,

  889. we're going to

  890. do that.

  891. We're going to

  892. live for Him

  893. and love

  894. Jesus.

  895. Because,

  896. truth be

  897. told,

  898. He did the

  899. extreme for

  900. us.

  901. He did the

  902. radical for

  903. us by dying

  904. on the cross

  905. for our sin.

  906. See,

  907. our new

  908. identity based

  909. in Scripture,

  910. based on who

  911. Jesus is,

  912. has already

  913. measured the

  914. cost.

  915. And Jesus

  916. is worth it.

  917. Already

  918. measured it.

  919. We are

  920. willing or

  921. should be

  922. willing to

  923. go to do

  924. and to be

  925. whatever He

  926. requires,

  927. whatever He

  928. commands.

  929. He hung and

  930. died on the

  931. cross so that

  932. we can fight

  933. for Him and

  934. love the

  935. people of the

  936. world.

  937. He hung on the

  938. cross so that

  939. we can live

  940. victorious over

  941. sin and not

  942. constantly stumble

  943. over the same

  944. thing.

  945. 1 John 3.16

  946. says,

  947. By this we

  948. know love,

  949. that He laid

  950. down His life

  951. for us,

  952. and we ought

  953. to lay down

  954. our lives for

  955. the brothers.

  956. When we

  957. gather,

  958. when we're

  959. apart,

  960. be willing to

  961. lay down our

  962. lives for the

  963. brothers.

  964. Whatever that

  965. means,

  966. because Jesus

  967. is worth

  968. more than

  969. what measurements

  970. we can put

  971. on here on

  972. earth.

  973. When we

  974. unite over

  975. our identity

  976. in Jesus,

  977. we gain a

  978. kingdom view.

  979. We gain a

  980. vision of what

  981. God is doing

  982. and what He

  983. wants to do.

  984. And that

  985. becomes contagious.

  986. Infectious even.

  987. When we unite

  988. over our

  989. identity in

  990. Jesus,

  991. this kingdom

  992. view becomes

  993. contagious.

  994. When the body

  995. gathers,

  996. the body

  997. becomes infected

  998. with the

  999. commission of

  1000. the King.

  1001. Because being

  1002. set free,

  1003. because of

  1004. Jesus and

  1005. being set free

  1006. from sin,

  1007. we do radical

  1008. things then.

  1009. We make radical

  1010. decisions.

  1011. We live radical

  1012. lives for Him.

  1013. Turn to

  1014. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 61 chapter mention

  1015. 61.

  1016. Isaiah 61 is a

  1017. prophecy of the

  1018. coming Messiah

  1019. who we know

  1020. is Jesus.

  1021. Isaiah 61,

  1022. Isaiah writes,

  1023. the Spirit of the

  1024. Lord God is upon

  1025. me because the

  1026. Lord has anointed

  1027. me to bring good

  1028. news to the poor.

1029. He has sent me to

  1030. bind up the

  1031. brokenhearted,

  1032. to proclaim

  1033. liberty to the

  1034. captives,

  1035. and the opening of

  1036. the prison to those

  1037. who are bound,

  1038. to proclaim the

  1039. year of the

  1040. Lord's favor,

  1041. and the day of

  1042. vengeance of our

  1043. God,

  1044. to comfort all

  1045. who mourn,

  1046. to grant to

  1047. those who

  1048. mourn in Zion,

  1049. to give them a

  1050. beautiful headdress

  1051. instead of ashes,

  1052. the oil of

  1053. gladness instead

  1054. of mourning,

  1055. the garment of

  1056. praise instead of

  1057. a faint spirit,

  1058. that they may be

  1059. called oaks of

  1060. righteousness,

  1061. the planting of

  1062. the Lord that He

  1063. may be glorified.

  1064. They shall build

  1065. up the ancient

  1066. ruins.

  1067. They shall raise

  1068. up the former

  1069. devastations.

  1070. They shall repair

  1071. the ruined cities,

  1072. the devastations of

  1073. many generations.

  1074. Look at these

  1075. actions.

  1076. Bring good news

  1077. to the poor.

  1078. Bind up the

  1079. brokenhearted.

  1080. Proclaim liberty

  1081. to the captives.

  1082. Open the prison

  1083. to those who are

  1084. bound.

  1085. Comfort all who

  1086. mourn.

  1087. Proclaim the

  1088. year of the

  1089. Lord's favor.

  1090. Grant those who

  1091. mourn in Zion.

  1092. Give beautiful

  1093. headdresses instead

  1094. of ashes.

  1095. Give the oil of

  1096. gladness instead

  1097. of a faint spirit.

  1098. If this is

  1099. Jesus, then this

  1100. is our mission

  1101. too.

  1102. If this is

  1103. Jesus, then

  1104. this is why

  1105. we gather

  1106. what we

  1107. celebrate.

  1108. We are united

  1109. with one

  1110. identity.

  1111. An identity

  1112. that changes

  1113. the world.

  1114. An identity

  1115. that crushes

  1116. the power of

  1117. sin and enables

  1118. us to live in

  1119. freedom and to

  1120. share that

  1121. freedom.

  1122. We have freedom

  1123. to love Jesus

  1124. and fight for

  1125. Him.

  1126. we unite

  1127. over identities

  1128. and we

  1129. minister out

  1130. of that

  1131. identity as

  1132. well.

  1133. We minister

  1134. together.

  1135. We minister

  1136. to one another.

  1137. We minister

  1138. apart to those

  1139. around us in our

  1140. circles out in

  1141. the world.

  1142. world.

  1143. We haven't been

  1144. called just to

  1145. meet.

  1146. We haven't been

  1147. called to gather

  1148. together on Sunday

  1149. morning at

  1150. 1030.

  1151. We have been

  1152. sent into the

  1153. world to live

  1154. for Jesus, to

  1155. fight for Jesus, to

  1156. make disciples, to

  1157. live in the world

  1158. and love those

  1159. around us.

  1160. We have been

  1161. sent to be

  1162. as 2 Corinthians

  1163. 5 says,

  1164. ministers of

  1165. reconciliation.

  1166. But the

  1167. question is,

  1168. how can we be

  1169. ministers of

  1170. reconciliation if

  1171. we ourselves

  1172. have never been

  1173. reconciled?

  1174. If we

  1175. ourselves have

  1176. never received

  1177. faith to

  1178. believe in

  1179. Jesus and

  1180. repented of

  1181. our sins?

  1182. Or maybe we

  1183. just don't

  1184. understand that

  1185. being set free

  1186. comes from

  1187. Jesus' work on

  1188. the cross and

  1189. not from some

  1190. good life that

  1191. I live.

  1192. Turn to

  1193. Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  1194. chapter 3.

  1195. And then we'll

  1196. come back to

  1197. Romans.

  1198. Colossians

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  1199. chapter 3.

  1200. The beginning

  1201. of chapter 3,

  1202. Paul,

  1203. writing to the

  1204. church at

  1205. Colossae,

  1206. says we

  1207. basically have a

  1208. new identity in

  1209. Christ.

  1210. Verses 1-4,

  1211. this is our

  1212. new identity.

  1213. Because of what

  1214. Christ has done,

  1215. this is who we

  1216. are.

  1217. So we can jump

  1218. down to verse

  1219. 12.

  1220. This is how we

  1221. should live

  1222. together,

  1223. how we should

  1224. gather together,

  1225. how we should

  1226. act amongst one

  1227. another.

  1228. It says,

  1229. put on love.

  1230. Put on then,

  1231. as God's chosen

  1232. ones,

  1233. holy and beloved,

  1234. compassionate hearts,

  1235. kindness,

  1236. humility,

  1237. meekness,

  1238. and patience,

  1239. bearing with one

  1240. another.

1241. And if one has a

  1242. complaint against

  1243. another,

  1244. forgiving each other

  1245. as the Lord has

  1246. forgiven you,

  1247. so you also must

  1248. forgive.

  1249. And above all

  1250. these,

  1251. put on love,

  1252. which binds

  1253. everything together

  1254. in perfect harmony.

  1255. And let the peace

  1256. of Christ rule

  1257. in your hearts,

  1258. to which indeed

  1259. you were called

  1260. in one body.

  1261. And be thankful.

  1262. Let the Word of

  1263. Christ dwell in you

  1264. richly,

  1265. teaching and admonishing

  1266. one another in all

  1267. wisdom,

  1268. singing psalms and hymns

  1269. and spiritual songs

  1270. with thankfulness in

  1271. your hearts to God.

  1272. And whatever you do,

  1273. in word or deed,

  1274. do everything in the

  1275. name of the Lord

  1276. Jesus,

  1277. giving thanks to

  1278. God the Father

  1279. through Him.

  1280. This is living like

  1281. this.

  1282. Put on compassionate

  1283. hearts,

  1284. kindness,

  1285. humility,

  1286. meekness,

  1287. patience.

  1288. Put on love.

  1289. Let the Word of

  1290. Christ dwell in you

  1291. richly.

1292. All of that is out

  1293. of what Christ has

  1294. done for you and

  1295. for me.

1296. You can't do any of

  1297. this apart from the

  1298. work of Christ on

  1299. the cross.

  1300. Apart from a new

  1301. identity.

  1302. Our new identity

  1303. identity is not

  1304. this ambiguous

  1305. idea.

  1306. It's not this

  1307. someday,

  1308. maybe,

  1309. possibly,

  1310. might happen

  1311. thing.

  1312. It's present

  1313. now.

  1314. It's a present

  1315. moment thing.

  1316. Look at verse

  1317. 22 of Romans

  1318. 6.

  1319. Back to Romans

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  1320. chapter 6.

  1321. Language is in

  1322. present tense.

  1323. Verse 22.

  1324. But now that you

  1325. have been set free

  1326. from sin,

  1327. writing to the

  1328. church in Rome,

  1329. writing to

  1330. Christians,

  1331. to believers,

  1332. but now that you

  1333. have been set free

  1334. from sin and

  1335. have become slaves

  1336. of God, the fruit

  1337. you get leads to

  1338. sanctification and

  1339. eternal life.

1340. It is now that we

  1341. have a new identity.

  1342. It's not when we

  1343. die and we're with

  1344. Jesus.

  1345. It is now.

  1346. We are no longer

  1347. slaves to sin.

  1348. Sin no longer

  1349. has power over us

  1350. because of Christ

  1351. and the cross we

  1352. have this new

  1353. identity.

  1354. Galatians 4,

    Galatians 4:7

  1355. verse 7 gives us

  1356. a clear picture of

  1357. identity change.

  1358. Verse 7 of

  1359. Galatians chapter 4.

    Galatians 4 chapter mention

  1360. So you are no

  1361. longer a slave,

  1362. but a son.

  1363. And if a son,

  1364. then an heir

  1365. through God.

  1366. We are no longer

  1367. a slave to sin,

  1368. but an heir to

  1369. the greatest

  1370. kingdom.

  1371. The greatest

  1372. kingdom that has

  1373. ever been.

  1374. A kingdom that is

  1375. beyond our

  1376. understanding and

  1377. comprehension.

  1378. This is who we

  1379. are.

  1380. This is our new

  1381. identity.

  1382. And this new

  1383. identity affects

  1384. every area of our

  1385. lives, including

  1386. the times we

  1387. gather together.

  1388. in verse 20,

  1389. it says in

  1390. chapter 6 of

  1391. Romans,

  1392. for when you

  1393. were slaves of

  1394. sin, you were

  1395. free in regard

  1396. to righteousness.

  1397. Which, just

  1398. reading it is a

  1399. pretty obvious

  1400. statement.

  1401. When you're

  1402. slaves of sin,

  1403. you're not

  1404. connected with,

  1405. bound with

  1406. righteousness.

  1407. There's no

  1408. connection there.

  1409. You're not

  1410. under its

  1411. master.

  1412. We were

  1413. free from

  1414. righteousness,

  1415. which means,

  1416. as I've already

  1417. said, we were

  1418. unable to do

  1419. it or be

  1420. righteous.

  1421. Unable.

  1422. We were

  1423. unable to

  1424. please God.

  1425. We had not

  1426. been forgiven.

  1427. We had not

  1428. been given a

  1429. right standing

  1430. before God.

  1431. But not only

  1432. were we unable

  1433. to do righteous

  1434. acts because of

  1435. verse 20,

  1436. really because of

  1437. our sin,

  1438. communicated in

  1439. verse 20,

  1440. there's also no

  1441. binding, no

  1442. commitment between

  1443. us and

  1444. righteousness.

  1445. There was no

  1446. relationship between

  1447. us.

  1448. It did not have

  1449. control over us.

  1450. It did not

  1451. change how we

  1452. did things.

  1453. It didn't

  1454. change our

  1455. identity at all.

  1456. We couldn't

  1457. do any of it.

  1458. We couldn't do

  1459. righteous acts.

  1460. We were broken

  1461. from doing

  1462. good.

  1463. It was not

  1464. connected because

  1465. we were not

  1466. born again.

  1467. Look at the

  1468. end of verse

  1469. 22, though.

  1470. The fruit you

  1471. get leads to

  1472. sanctification and

  1473. it's in eternal

  1474. life.

  1475. The end of

  1476. verse 19.

  1477. So now,

  1478. present your

  1479. members as

  1480. slaves to

  1481. righteousness

  1482. leading to

  1483. sanctification.

  1484. Because of

  1485. Jesus,

  1486. because of

  1487. His life,

  1488. death,

  1489. and resurrection,

  1490. because of

  1491. His perfect

  1492. life,

  1493. sinless life,

  1494. He took on

  1495. our sin.

  1496. He took on

  1497. your sin so

  1498. that you can

  1499. be holy.

  1500. You can be

  1501. made holy.

  1502. holy.

  1503. Jesus died so

  1504. that you and

  1505. I can be

  1506. holy as God

  1507. is holy.

  1508. God is

  1509. working.

  1510. He's working

  1511. in your life.

  1512. He's working

  1513. in my life.

  1514. He's working

  1515. in everyone's

  1516. life in

  1517. here.

  1518. If you're a

  1519. Christian,

  1520. when we

  1521. gather,

  1522. we celebrate

  1523. what God

  1524. is doing

  1525. in us.

  1526. When we

  1527. gather,

  1528. we celebrate

  1529. what He's

  1530. done for

  1531. us.

  1532. We gather,

  1533. we see the

  1534. evidence of

  1535. what God

  1536. is doing

  1537. in each

  1538. other's

  1539. lives.

  1540. We see

  1541. the identity

  1542. change.

  1543. And that

  1544. encourages us.

  1545. That strengthens

  1546. us.

  1547. We gather

  1548. to rejoice

  1549. in Jesus,

  1550. to celebrate

  1551. Him because

  1552. of the slow

  1553. process of

  1554. making us

  1555. holy.

  1556. Perfecting

  1557. us for

  1558. His glory

  1559. and our

  1560. good.

  1561. He's

  1562. healing our

  1563. broken hearts.

  1564. He's

  1565. mending

  1566. marriages back

  1567. together.

  1568. He's

  1569. breaking

  1570. addictions.

  1571. He is

  1572. making the

  1573. dead

  1574. alive.

  1575. We come

  1576. together to

  1577. taste and

  1578. see this

  1579. stuff.

  1580. We come

  1581. together to

  1582. see that

  1583. He is

  1584. God and

  1585. He is

  1586. good.

  1587. We see

  1588. it among

  1589. His people.

  1590. We see

  1591. it in the

  1592. face of

  1593. the husband

  1594. and wife

  1595. whose marriage

  1596. has been

  1597. reconciled.

  1598. We see

  1599. it in the

  1600. college

  1601. graduate who

  1602. is more

  1603. excited about

  1604. serving Jesus

  1605. than any

  1606. potential job

  1607. pay.

  1608. We see

  1609. it in a

  1610. life that

  1611. has been

  1612. changed by

  1613. the gospel.

  1614. We come

  1615. to rejoice

  1616. that we

  1617. all in

  1618. Christ have

  1619. been set

  1620. free from

  1621. sin.

  1622. We've all

  1623. been set

  1624. free.

  1625. We live

  1626. no longer

  1627. under the

  1628. power of

  1629. sin but

  1630. in the

  1631. victory over

  1632. it.

  1633. And we

  1634. push one

  1635. another on.

  1636. We push

  1637. one another

  1638. forward.

  1639. Lord, we

  1640. come together

  1641. to celebrate

  1642. that death

  1643. for us is

  1644. a beginning

  1645. and not

  1646. an end.

  1647. And eternal

  1648. life is our

  1649. destination.

  1650. Eternity with

  1651. Jesus is

  1652. where we're

  1653. headed if we

  1654. know Jesus.

  1655. We come

  1656. together not

  1657. to celebrate

  1658. what He

  1659. has done,

  1660. what we have

  1661. done.

  1662. We don't

  1663. come to

  1664. celebrate that

  1665. or our

  1666. talents.

  1667. Although sin

  1668. will tell

  1669. us that's

  1670. why we

  1671. gather.

  1672. Sin will

  1673. tell you to

  1674. come and

  1675. celebrate what

  1676. you have

  1677. done.

  1678. We have

  1679. been given

  1680. victory over

  1681. that sin so

  1682. that we can

  1683. come and

  1684. rejoice in

  1685. what Jesus

  1686. is doing

  1687. and has

  1688. done.

  1689. We come

  1690. together to

  1691. lift up

  1692. Jesus so

  1693. that we can

  1694. go strengthened

  1695. and empowered

  1696. to fight the

  1697. good fight for

  1698. Him and

  1699. His name.

  1700. Listen to

  1701. these words

  1702. from Charles

  1703. Simeon in

  1704. a sermon.

  1705. He says,

  1706. For a

  1707. nominal

  1708. Christian is

  1709. content with

  1710. proving the

  1711. way of

  1712. salvation by

  1713. a crucified

  1714. Redeemer.

  1715. So a

  1716. nominal

  1717. Christian is

  1718. content with

  1719. just saying,

  1720. I am

  1721. saved because

  1722. of Jesus

  1723. on the

  1724. cross and

  1725. that's it.

  1726. But the

  1727. true Christian

  1728. loves it,

  1729. delights in

  1730. it,

  1731. glories in

  1732. it,

  1733. and shudders

  1734. at the

  1735. very thought

  1736. of glorying

  1737. in anything

  1738. else.

  1739. The

  1740. true Christian

  1741. loves it,

  1742. delights in

  1743. it,

  1744. glories in

  1745. it,

  1746. and shudders

  1747. at the

  1748. very thought

  1749. of glorying

  1750. in anything

  1751. else.

  1752. This is

  1753. who we

  1754. want CFC

  1755. to be,

  1756. to be

  1757. filled with.

  1758. This is

  1759. what we

  1760. want CFC

  1761. to be.

  1762. True

  1763. Christians

  1764. who love

  1765. Jesus,

  1766. who delight

  1767. in Jesus,

  1768. who glory

  1769. in Jesus,

  1770. and shudder

  1771. at glorying

  1772. in anything

  1773. or anyone

  1774. else.

  1775. We come

  1776. together to

  1777. rejoice in

  1778. Jesus,

  1779. as our

  1780. statement of

  1781. faith says,

  1782. to experience,

  1783. proclaim,

  1784. and display

  1785. the supremacy

  1786. of Jesus

  1787. in all

  1788. things.

  1789. Because we

  1790. have been set

  1791. free,

  1792. our identity

  1793. has changed,

  1794. and we

  1795. gather to

  1796. celebrate

  1797. that in

  1798. Jesus'

  1799. name.

  1800. We have

  1801. been set

  1802. free from

  1803. sin to

  1804. live lives

  1805. that are no

  1806. longer in

  1807. bondage to

  1808. sin,

  1809. but is

  1810. victorious over

  1811. it.

  1812. It is that

  1813. simple.

  1814. In verse

  1815. 19, I

  1816. skipped over

  1817. this phrase

  1818. the last two

  1819. weeks because

  1820. I wasn't sure

  1821. what to do

  1822. with it.

  1823. The beginning

  1824. of verse

  1825. 19, I am

  1826. speaking in

  1827. human terms

  1828. because of

  1829. your natural

  1830. limitations.

  1831. It's not an

  1832. insult.

  1833. He's not saying

  1834. you guys are

  1835. dumb.

  1836. And so I'm

  1837. speaking clearly

  1838. to you or

  1839. speaking in

  1840. simple tone or

  1841. simple words.

  1842. What he's saying

  1843. is I'm using

  1844. simple language

  1845. because you

  1846. understand and

  1847. you need to

  1848. understand.

  1849. So he uses

  1850. slave and

  1851. master because

  1852. the church in

  1853. Rome would

  1854. understand that

  1855. clearly.

  1856. He uses this

  1857. and he repeats

  1858. it over and

  1859. over and says

  1860. it in different

  1861. ways so that

  1862. they can

  1863. understand.

  1864. We have

  1865. been set free

  1866. from sin.

  1867. Sin no longer

  1868. has power over

  1869. us.

  1870. It's that

  1871. simple.

  1872. simple.

  1873. Jesus died on

  1874. the cross for

  1875. our sin.

  1876. It's that

  1877. simple.

  1878. Let us not

  1879. muck up the

  1880. water so that

  1881. no one can

  1882. understand it.

  1883. We have been

  1884. set free.

  1885. You have been

  1886. set free.

  1887. I have been

  1888. set free.

  1889. We have

  1890. received a new

  1891. identity and

  1892. that is why we

  1893. gather.

  1894. We meet

  1895. together because

  1896. Jesus died

  1897. for us.

  1898. We have been

  1899. justified by

  1900. faith.

  1901. we are being

  1902. made holy by

  1903. God.

  1904. We can

  1905. worship together.

  1906. We can

  1907. celebrate together

  1908. and we can

  1909. rejoice together

  1910. because of what

  1911. Jesus has done

  1912. giving us a new

  1913. identity.

  1914. Christians,

  1915. let us rejoice

  1916. over our new

  1917. identity.

  1918. Let us fight

  1919. for His name,

  1920. for His renown,

  1921. for His acclaim,

  1922. for He is

  1923. worthy of all

  1924. praise.
