  1. We'll continue our study today of Romans, in Romans chapter 7, beginning in verse 7, and we'll study today through verse 13.

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  2. ! Please join me in reading that.

  3. What then shall we say that the law of sin? By no means. Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin, for I would not have known what it is to covet.

  4. If the law had not said, you shall not covet. But sin, seizing opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness.

  5. For apart from the law, sin lies dead. I was once alive apart from the law, but when the commandment came, sin came alive, and I died.

  6. The very commandment that promised life proved to be death for me. For sin, seizing opportunity through the commandment, deceived me, and through it killed me.

  7. So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, and righteous, and good. That which is good, then, bring death to me? By no means.

  8. It was sin producing death in me, through what is good, in order that sin might be shown to be sin, and through the commandment, might become sinful.

  9. God measure. Let's pray together.

  10. Father God, we praise you for your great work amongst us.

  11. I thank you, Father, that I can look out over this group of people who have just sang,

  12. on Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground shifting sand,

  13. and that my heart can be moved to praise you for your redemptive work in the lives of so many here this morning.

  14. I pray, Father, now as we study your word, we will take knowledge and combine it with understanding,

  15. so that we might have wisdom.

  16. That that wisdom will yield in our life appropriate fruit for your glory and our good.

  17. We pray this in the precious name of Christ. Amen.

  18. Well, Paul, to this point, is certainly being thematic in his writing,

  19. and his theme throughout Romans has been the theme of Scripture.

  20. That the salvation of man from the wrath of God,

  21. justly due him because of his sin,

  22. that salvation only comes by grace, through faith in Christ.

  23. By grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

  24. And he's talked about the law quite a bit up until this point.

  25. He's told us a lot about what the law cannot do.

  26. The law cannot save us, he tells us in chapters 3 through 5.

  27. The law can't sanctify or perfect us, he tells us in chapter 6.

  28. And the law can no longer condemn those who have placed their faith in Christ,

  29. he tells us in the first six verses of chapter 7.

  30. And Paul then, coming to verse 7 of chapter 7,

  31. anticipates a question from his readers.

  32. And it is this.

  33. If we have been delivered from the law to live by the Spirit,

  34. was the law then evil?

  35. If we've been delivered from it in order to live righteously,

  36. was the law itself evil?

  37. He says it this way.

  38. What then shall we say?

  39. That the law is sin?

  40. And he answers it emphatically.

  41. By no means.

  42. By no means.

  43. And the remainder of our verses are the explanation of what he means by that.

  44. By no means.

  45. In Greek, meginoito.

  46. It's the strongest negative phrase in the Greek language.

  47. So I want you to think of the strongest negative phrase in the English language.

  48. Get it in your mind.

  49. We're going to go with, of course not.

  50. Not really the strongest negative phrase in the English language.

  51. But that's what he was using.

  52. Absolutely.

  53. No way is that what is true.

  54. But then he goes on to explain that.

  55. And this morning I want to show four things that the law does do.

  56. The law is not sin.

  57. Emphatically, no, the law is not sin.

  58. What does the law then accomplish on our behalf?

  59. And I want to show you four things from these next seven verses.

  60. And they are the law exposes sin.

  61. It arouses sin.

  62. It ruins the sinner.

  63. And it reveals the sinfulness of sin.

  64. The magnitude of our sin.

  65. Those are our four things.

  66. And Paul tells us this from his own experience.

  67. And in order to teach these universal truths,

  68. he uses his own conversion experience in these next verses that are going to come.

  69. And look at all the personal pronouns.

  70. I'm not going to point them all out.

  71. But look at all the I's and me's throughout these seven verses.

  72. So he's speaking from his own personal experience,

  73. which helps us understand a bit what he means as he's saying all this.

  74. So number one, the law exposes sin.

  75. We find that in the second half, second two-thirds of verse seven.

  76. Yet, if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin.

  77. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, you shall not covet.

  78. Now, Paul is not saying that he was unaware of evil in his life apart from the law.

  79. All right.

  80. On the surface, it seems to be saying that.

  81. But if you flip back and look at Romans chapter two, verse 12,

  82. it says,

  83. For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law.

  84. And all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law.

  85. And in chapter one, we learn that the law of God is written on men's hearts.

  86. They know right from wrong.

  87. So what does he mean then when he says,

  88. If it hadn't been for the law, I wouldn't have known sin.

  89. What he means is that he wouldn't have known the magnitude of his sin.

  90. He wouldn't have really understood just how wretched and evil he was.

  91. By New Testament times,

  92. Jewish rabbis had summed up scriptural law in 613 commandments,

  93. comprised of 248 mandates,

  94. which related things such as worship,

  95. the temple,

  96. sacrifices,

  97. vows,

  98. social issues,

  99. etc.

  100. And 365 prohibitions,

  101. things like idolatry and blasphemy,

  102. the priesthood of diets,

  103. loans,

  104. business arrangements,

  105. etc.

  106. And they had become absolutely consumed with trying to keep the law.

  107. The point of the law, though,

  108. the major point of it was to show us

  109. how incapable we are

  110. of living up to the standard of God.

  111. That's why it existed.

  112. God said,

  113. I desire for you to be holy.

  114. This is what it looks like.

  115. Watch yourselves fail.

  116. Be aware of your need

  117. of a Savior.

  118. That was the purpose that the law came to serve.

  119. The law shows us

  120. our inability to live

  121. to the standard of God.

  122. Why does Paul use that commandment?

  123. Exodus 20, 17

  124. is where that's found.

  125. Thou shalt not covet.

  126. Why of all the laws he could have chosen

  127. to show us our frailty,

  128. show us how incapable we are

  129. of living to the standard of God,

  130. why that one?

  131. The last of the Ten Commandments.

  132. Both the Hebrew and the Greek word for covet

  133. is the word,

  134. could also be rendered desire.

  135. Desire.

  136. That which motivates us.

  137. That which we love.

  138. So,

  139. thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house

  140. gets to the root of who you are

  141. and what you're satisfied in.

  142. If you desire anything other than God,

  143. it's evidence in your life

  144. that you are not satisfied with Him.

  145. It's a very piercing decision

  146. that he made here.

  147. Is it not?

  148. Thou shalt not covet.

  149. Thou shalt not desire things

  150. other than your God.

  151. It exposes then

  152. our motivation.

  153. It exposes our sin nature.

  154. Not just that we sin,

  155. but that we are utterly

  156. sinful

  157. apart from Christ.

  158. Many illnesses

  159. carry with them

  160. symptoms.

  161. I've never had appendicitis,

  162. but I hear that appendicitis

  163. is incredibly painful.

  164. That your appendix

  165. hurts.

  166. And why does it hurt?

  167. Your body is telling you

  168. something is wrong.

  169. You need a surgery desperately.

  170. Before I burst.

  171. As your appendix is telling you.

  172. In the same way,

  173. the law is the exposure.

  174. It brings to light

  175. how really ill we are.

  176. Last night,

  177. I was awoken

  178. quite drastically

  179. when Sam

  180. elbowed me in the eye.

  181. and I was asleep

  182. when it happened,

  183. but I imagine

  184. it was like

  185. this kind of

  186. an elbow.

  187. Because

  188. I woke up like this

  189. and my eye flashed

  190. like bright

  191. white flashes of light

  192. and the first thought

  193. that went through my head

  194. was,

  195. I'm not going to be able

  196. to see out of my left eye

  197. tomorrow.

  198. There's no way.

  199. I'm going to have to

  200. preach like this

  201. and I don't know

  202. that I can do that

  203. because I don't have

  204. great vision in my right eye

  205. either.

  206. But the pain,

  207. the pain wasn't

  208. the evil was it?

  209. It was the symptom

  210. of some greater evil.

  211. Not my wife,

  212. but that my eye

  213. had been struck.

  214. Right?

  215. But that my eye

  216. had been hit

  217. was the greater

  218. evil there

  219. and it was damaged

  220. and that pain

  221. that woke me up

  222. was my eye.

  223. Sam,

  224. I love you

  225. even when you

  226. sucker punch me

  227. when I'm sleeping.

  228. I still love you

  229. just the same.

  230. So the law then

  231. serves to expose

  232. our sin

  233. to show us

  234. just how

  235. sinful

  236. we actually

  237. are.

  238. You are now

  239. aware.

  240. None of you

  241. get out of this

  242. this morning.

  243. If you desire

  244. anything more

  245. than God,

  246. shame on you.

  247. Not only does it

  248. expose our sin,

  249. it also

  250. arouses our sin.

  251. So number two,

  252. the law arouses

  253. our sin.

  254. Verse eight,

  255. Paul writes,

  256. but sin,

  257. seizing an opportunity

  258. through the commandment

  259. produced in me

  260. all kinds

  261. of covetousness.

  262. For apart from the law,

  263. sin lies dead.

  264. Let's deal with the

  265. last part of that

  266. first.

  267. Sin lies dead.

  268. That's an interesting

  269. question in my mind.

  270. Sin lies dead

  271. apart from the law.

  272. And I've just

  273. already touched on this,

  274. but it exists,

  275. but it is in a

  276. sense dormant.

  277. We don't really

  278. understand.

  279. We don't really

  280. get that we've

  281. betrayed God

  282. to the degree

  283. that we have

  284. apart from the law.

  285. But we see in here

  286. kind of an interesting

  287. turn of phrase,

  288. but sin,

  289. seizing opportunity

  290. through the commandment,

  291. produced in me

  292. all kinds of

  293. covetousness,

  294. which is sin,

  295. right?

  296. So he seems to be

  297. saying,

  298. sin produced

  299. sin.

  300. Yeah?

  301. It kind of looks

  302. that way,

  303. doesn't it?

  304. He seems to give

  305. sin a personality,

  306. right?

  307. As if what he's

  308. referring to is

  309. another person,

  310. right?

  311. So this thing

  312. called sin

  313. produced something

  314. called sin,

  315. or we could say

  316. sins,

  317. produced in him

  318. covetousness.

  319. Again,

  320. Paul is getting

  321. to our nature.

  322. We move on

  323. through chapter 7,

  324. Paul's going to

  325. talk a lot about

  326. the battle that

  327. goes on within

  328. him,

  329. his new desires

  330. and his old

  331. desires,

  332. his new self

  333. and his old

  334. self.

  335. So his sin

  336. nature

  337. produced

  338. sins within

  339. him.

  340. And it's so

  341. important for us

  342. to understand

  343. that about

  344. ourselves,

  345. both pre-Christ,

  346. pre-regeneration,

  347. that we were

  348. utterly

  349. spoiled.

  350. Absolutely.

  351. We were created

  352. in the image of

  353. God,

  354. God,

  355. but sin

  356. destroyed that

  357. evil

  358. completely

  359. before Christ.

  360. Now that we're

  361. found in Christ,

  362. we still carry

  363. around the baggage

  364. of our old

  365. selves.

  366. It's important

  367. that you get

  368. this to its

  369. extremity.

  370. He says that

  371. sin seized an

  372. opportunity,

  373. the Greek for

  374. opportunity here

  375. is a formé,

  376. and it's

  377. also used to

  378. speak of a

  379. base of

  380. operations.

  381. So it's as if

  382. you say our

  383. sin nature

  384. uses the law

  385. as a command

  386. center from

  387. which to

  388. launch its

  389. evil campaign

  390. into the

  391. world.

  392. You see that?

  393. So the law

  394. then gives our

  395. sinful nature

  396. something to

  397. pick at.

  398. Your parents

  399. say to you,

  400. don't do

  401. this thing.

  402. What did you do

  403. growing up?

  404. The very thing

  405. you weren't

  406. supposed to

  407. do.

  408. Our house is

  409. incredibly

  410. childproof,

  411. but there's

  412. typically

  413. something sitting

  414. out that

  415. Cade cannot

  416. touch.

  417. I'll leave my

  418. laptop sitting

  419. on the couch,

  420. for example.

  421. The one thing

  422. in the entire

  423. room I don't

  424. want him to

  425. touch, and I

  426. tell him,

  427. Cade, don't

  428. touch the

  429. computer.

  430. What does he

  431. go straight

  432. to?

  433. The computer.

  434. The law

  435. does the same

  436. thing in

  437. sinful man.

  438. It says to

  439. us, don't

  440. do or do

  441. do these

  442. things, and

  443. our nature

  444. repels against

  445. it.

  446. He uses

  447. it to

  448. exacerbate

  449. sin in

  450. our life.

  451. John Bunyan's

  452. allegory,

  453. Pilgrim's

  454. Progress,

  455. after the

  456. main character

  457. of Christian

  458. becomes a

  459. Christian, he

  460. goes to a

  461. man's house

  462. called the

  463. interpreter,

  464. and one of

  465. the rooms

  466. the interpreter

  467. takes him

  468. to is a

  469. dusty room.

  470. It's got

  471. furniture in

  472. it covered

  473. with cloths,

  474. and there's

  475. just this

  476. thick layer

  477. of dust

  478. laid down

  479. in the

  480. room.

  481. And the

  482. interpreter

  483. tells Christian

  484. that this

  485. is his

  486. life.

  487. And a

  488. man comes

  489. in with

  490. a broom,

  491. and it

  492. looks like

  493. he's coming

  494. in to

  495. clean up,

  496. but he

  497. begins to

  498. just stir

  499. the dust.

  500. And soon

  501. the room

  502. is so

  503. filled with

  504. dust that

  505. Christian can

  506. barely breathe

  507. any longer.

  508. And in the

  509. allegory,

  510. the man with

  511. the broom

  512. is the law.

  513. And he

  514. stirs up,

  515. he exacerbates

  516. the level

  517. of sin

  518. in Christian's

  519. life.

  520. So Christian

  521. is coming

  522. to an

  523. understanding

  524. of what

  525. it is

  526. he's being

  527. delivered

  528. from.

  529. I didn't

  530. read it

  531. in detail,

  532. I don't

  533. remember the

  534. exact details,

  535. but I

  536. believe two

  537. characters

  538. come in

  539. after that

  540. with water

  541. and they

  542. sprinkle

  543. down all

  544. the dust

  545. and they

  546. clean it

  547. all up.

  548. And that's

  549. the grace

  550. of God

  551. in our

  552. lives.

  553. So the

  554. law exposes

  555. our sin,

  556. it arouses

  557. our sin,

  558. and the

  559. law also

  560. ruins

  561. sinners.

  562. Number three,

  563. the law

  564. ruins

  565. sinners.

  566. Read with

  567. me verses

  568. 9-11.

  569. Paul says,

  570. I was once

  571. alive apart

  572. from the

  573. law,

  574. but when

  575. the commandment

  576. came,

  577. sin came

  578. alive and

  579. I died.

  580. The very

  581. commandment

  582. that promised

  583. life proved

  584. to be death

  585. for me,

  586. for sin

  587. seizing an

  588. opportunity

  589. through the

  590. commandment

  591. deceived me

  592. and through

  593. it killed

  594. me.

  595. Now Paul

  596. says,

  597. I was once

  598. alive apart

  599. from the

  600. law.

  601. And this

  602. is where

  603. the fact

  604. that this

  605. is his

  606. personal

  607. story needs

  608. to be taken

  609. into account.

  610. Paul was

  611. a Pharisee,

  612. an incredibly

  613. zealous

  614. Pharisee.

  615. Paul was

  616. trained up

  617. in the

  618. law.

  619. So was

  620. there ever

  621. a time

  622. in Paul's

  623. life where

  624. he didn't

  625. know the

  626. law?

  627. No.

  628. So what

  629. in the

  630. world does

  631. he mean,

  632. I was

  633. alive apart

  634. from the

  635. law?

  636. And then

  637. he says,

  638. when it

  639. came,

  640. sin came

  641. alive and

  642. I died.

  643. It's

  644. confusing

  645. language,

  646. isn't it?

  647. What I

  648. firmly believe

  649. Paul is

  650. saying is

  651. that when

  652. he came

  653. to a

  654. proper

  655. understanding

  656. of the

  657. law,

  658. when he

  659. saw the

  660. law for

  661. what it

  662. was meant

  663. to accomplish,

  664. not that

  665. he could

  666. keep the

  667. law,

  668. but when

  669. he saw

  670. that the

  671. law was

  672. a standard

  673. he could

  674. not live

  675. to,

  676. when the

  677. law came

  678. alive,

  679. when he

  680. understood

  681. what it

  682. was for,

  683. he died.

  684. All of

  685. his religious

  686. activity,

  687. all the

  688. things he

  689. thought he

  690. was doing

  691. to earn

  692. favor with

  693. God,

  694. were destroyed.

  695. He absolutely

  696. died.

  697. Chris this

  698. morning as we

  699. were praying

  700. downstairs,

  701. thanked God

  702. that there is

  703. nothing we can

  704. do to make

  705. him love us

  706. more.

  707. There's also

  708. nothing we can

  709. do to make

  710. him love us

  711. less.

  712. That's the

  713. point, I

  714. believe,

  715. being made

  716. here.

  717. The very

  718. commandment

  719. that promised

  720. this life

  721. proved to

  722. be death

  723. for him.

  724. All of his

  725. activity,

  726. all those

  727. things he

  728. had strained

  729. forward for.

  730. Some of us

  731. are that way.

  732. In our

  733. Christianity,

  734. now that we

  735. have been

  736. delivered from

  737. the law,

  738. we strive to

  739. be found in

  740. good favor with

  741. God, and it

  742. becomes our

  743. idol.

  744. That becomes

  745. who we are.

  746. Paul says in

  747. Philippians 3,

  748. 7, and 8

  749. that he counted

  750. all of his

  751. religious activity

  752. upon encountering

  753. Christ.

  754. Everything,

  755. all of his,

  756. not thinking of

  757. the right words,

  758. all the credit

  759. that was due

  760. him for all

  761. of his

  762. religious activity.

  763. He counted

  764. it as

  765. loss.

  766. And he goes

  767. so far as to

  768. say he counted

  769. it as

  770. rubbish.

  771. Another

  772. great English

  773. word would fit

  774. in there,

  775. but we're not

  776. going to say it.

  777. Counted it

  778. as rubbish.

  779. And he uses

  780. this phrase again

  781. in verse 11,

  782. again,

  783. seizing an

  784. opportunity.

  785. The law,

  786. the sin in his

  787. life,

  788. seized an

  789. opportunity

  790. through the

  791. law to

  792. deceive him

  793. and kill him.

  794. And that is

  795. the subtle

  796. deception of

  797. our sin

  798. nature.

  799. The subtle

  800. deception of

  801. our sin

  802. nature is

  803. that we

  804. can,

  805. in fact,

  806. do good

  807. on our

  808. own.

  809. That we

  810. can,

  811. in fact,

  812. apart from

  813. the grace

  814. of God,

  815. please God

  816. at all.

  817. Number

  818. four.

  819. The law

  820. exposes sin,

  821. it arouses sin,

  822. it ruins

  823. sinners.

  824. Number

  825. four,

  826. the law

  827. reveals the

  828. sinfulness

  829. of sin.

  830. The magnitude

  831. of sin.

  832. So Paul

  833. says,

  834. so the law

  835. is holy.

  836. I'm now

  837. establishing that

  838. once again.

  839. So the law

  840. is holy,

  841. and the

  842. commandment

  843. is holy,

  844. and it's

  845. righteous,

  846. and it's

  847. good.

  848. Did that

  849. which is

  850. good then

  851. bring death

  852. to me?

  853. By no

  854. means.

  855. It was

  856. sin

  857. producing

  858. death in

  859. me,

  860. through that

  861. which is

  862. good,

  863. in order

  864. that sin

  865. might be

  866. shown to

  867. be sin,

  868. and through

  869. the commandment

  870. might become

  871. sinful

  872. beyond measure.

  873. Turn with me

  874. to Psalm

  875. 19.

  876. Let's read

  877. together what

  878. David says

  879. of the law

  880. starting in

  881. verse 7.

  882. The law

  883. of the Lord

  884. is perfect,

  885. reviving the

  886. soul.

  887. The testimony

  888. of the Lord

  889. is sure,

  890. making wise

  891. the simple.

  892. The precepts

  893. of the Lord

  894. are right,

  895. rejoicing the

  896. heart.

  897. The commandment

  898. of the Lord

  899. is pure,

  900. enlightening

  901. the eyes.

  902. The fear

  903. of the Lord

  904. is clean,

  905. enduring forever.

  906. The rules

  907. of the Lord

  908. are true

  909. and righteous

  910. altogether.

  911. More to be

  912. desired are

  913. they than

  914. gold,

  915. even much

  916. fine gold,

  917. sweeter also

  918. than honey,

  919. and drippings

  920. of the honeycomb.

  921. Moreover,

  922. by them

  923. is your servant

  924. warned,

  925. in keeping

  926. them there

  927. is great

  928. reward.

  929. The law

  930. is good

  931. and righteous

  932. and holy.

  933. It's not the

  934. fault of the law.

  935. It's the fault

  936. of us.

  937. It's the fault

  938. of our sin,

  939. birthing

  940. through the law

  941. more sin

  942. to make sin

  943. sinful

  944. beyond measure.

  945. Our sin

  946. is infinitely

  947. vile

  948. in the eyes

  949. of God.

  950. Our sin

  951. nature has

  952. produced it

  953. to that

  954. measure.

  955. So,

  956. the law

  957. exposes sin,

  958. it arouses sin,

  959. it ruins sinners,

  960. and it reveals

  961. the sinfulness

  962. of sin.

  963. But,

  964. so what?

  965. Why does this

  966. matter?

  967. Why did Paul

  968. write this?

  969. Why am I

  970. spending this

  971. time telling

  972. you this

  973. and possibly

  974. having you

  975. take notes

  976. on it?

  977. Right?

  978. Three things.

  979. Number one,

  980. the law

  981. brings us

  982. the necessary

  983. humility

  984. for salvation.

  985. salvation.

  986. The law

  987. brings to us

  988. the necessary

  989. humility

  990. for salvation.

  991. The law

  992. serves as

  993. a mirror.

  994. Before we

  995. know Christ,

  996. we hold the

  997. law up to us

  998. as a mirror,

  999. and we see

  1000. how ugly

  1001. our sin

  1002. is.

  1003. If you claim

  1004. to know Christ

  1005. this morning,

  1006. but you've never

  1007. been broken

  1008. over your

  1009. sinfulness,

  1010. if you've

  1011. never compared

  1012. yourself to

  1013. God's holy

  1014. perfect law

  1015. and found

  1016. yourself coming

  1017. so short

  1018. of it,

  1019. then in your

  1020. own mind,

  1021. you have no

  1022. need of God's

  1023. grace.

  1024. You don't

  1025. need Christ.

  1026. You don't

  1027. need His

  1028. sacrifice because

  1029. you're already

  1030. perfect.

  1031. perfect.

  1032. But if,

  1033. as a Christian,

  1034. you've honestly

  1035. held your

  1036. life up to

  1037. the law,

  1038. filtered it

  1039. through it,

  1040. and seen

  1041. how wretched

  1042. and miserable

  1043. you are,

  1044. then great

  1045. is your

  1046. Savior.

  1047. Which brings

  1048. us to

  1049. number two.

  1050. It causes

  1051. us to

  1052. praise our

  1053. great Savior.

  1054. If your

  1055. sin is

  1056. great,

  1057. your Savior

  1058. will also

  1059. be great.

  1060. And if we

  1061. know God's

  1062. law,

  1063. if we

  1064. study it,

  1065. we'll know

  1066. our sin

  1067. is great.

  1068. Both before

  1069. I was saved

  1070. and even

  1071. now that

  1072. I am,

  1073. my sin

  1074. is great.

  1075. Which makes

  1076. my Savior

  1077. all the

  1078. much

  1079. greater.

  1080. God's

  1081. grace to

  1082. us is

  1083. immense.

  1084. Just as

  1085. our sin

  1086. is sinful

  1087. beyond measure,

  1088. God's

  1089. grace

  1090. goes beyond

  1091. measure.

  1092. It is

  1093. infinite

  1094. toward us

  1095. in the

  1096. person and

  1097. work

  1098. of Jesus

  1099. Christ.

  1100. In

  1101. Deuteronomy

  1102. 27-26,

  1103. Moses says,

  1104. Cursed be

  1105. anyone who

  1106. does not

  1107. confirm the

  1108. words of

  1109. this law

  1110. by doing

  1111. them.

  1112. And then in

  1113. the next

  1114. chapter,

  1115. he goes on

  1116. to talk about

  1117. what will

  1118. happen to

  1119. those people

  1120. who don't

  1121. keep God's

  1122. law.

  1123. Turn with

  1124. me to

  1125. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 28 chapter mention

  1126. chapter 28.

  1127. We won't

  1128. read all of

  1129. this, but I

  1130. just want you

  1131. to get the

  1132. point.

  1133. Deuteronomy

  1134. 28, starting

  1135. in verse 15.

  1136. But if you

  1137. will not obey

  1138. the voice of

  1139. the Lord your

  1140. God, or be

  1141. careful to do

  1142. all his

  1143. commandments and

  1144. his statutes

  1145. that I command

  1146. you today,

  1147. then all

  1148. these curses

  1149. shall come upon

  1150. you and

  1151. overtake you.

  1152. Curse shall

  1153. you be in

  1154. the city, and

  1155. curse shall

  1156. you be in

  1157. the field.

  1158. Curse shall

  1159. you be your

  1160. basket and

  1161. your kneading

  1162. bowl.

  1163. Curse shall

  1164. be the fruit

  1165. of your

  1166. womb and

  1167. the fruit

  1168. of your

  1169. ground, the

  1170. increase of

  1171. your herd and

  1172. the young of

  1173. your flock.

  1174. Curse shall

  1175. you be when

  1176. you come in,

  1177. and curse shall

  1178. you be when

  1179. you go out.

  1180. The Lord

  1181. will send

  1182. on you

  1183. curses,

  1184. confusion,

  1185. and frustration,

  1186. and all

  1187. that you

  1188. undertake to

  1189. do, until

  1190. you are

  1191. destroyed and

  1192. perish quickly

  1193. on account of

  1194. the evil of

  1195. your deeds,

  1196. because you

  1197. have forsaken

  1198. me.

  1199. The Lord

  1200. will make

  1201. the pestilence

  1202. stick to

  1203. you until

  1204. he has

  1205. consumed you

  1206. off the

  1207. land, and

  1208. you are

  1209. entering to

  1210. take possession

  1211. of it.

  1212. The Lord

  1213. will strike

  1214. you with

  1215. wasting

  1216. disease, and

  1217. with fever,

  1218. inflammation, and

  1219. fiery heat, and

  1220. with drought, and

  1221. with blight, and

  1222. with mildew.

  1223. They shall

  1224. pursue you

  1225. until you

  1226. perish.

  1227. And the

  1228. heavens over

  1229. your head

  1230. shall be

  1231. bronze, and

  1232. the earth

  1233. under you

  1234. shall be

  1235. iron.

  1236. The Lord

  1237. will make

  1238. the rain

  1239. of your

  1240. land

  1241. powder.

  1242. From

  1243. heaven, dust

  1244. shall

  1245. come down

  1246. on you,

  1247. until you

  1248. are

  1249. destroyed.

  1250. You get

  1251. the weight

  1252. of God's

  1253. wrath

  1254. towards sin,

  1255. and we've

  1256. been delivered

  1257. from that,

  1258. not because

  1259. we kept

  1260. the law.

  1261. This curse

  1262. lies with

  1263. us, because

  1264. we've

  1265. transgressed

  1266. the law.

  1267. But because

  1268. of Christ,

  1269. we're seen

  1270. as righteous

  1271. in Him.

  1272. We are

  1273. delivered

  1274. because we

  1275. have the

  1276. righteousness

  1277. of Christ.

  1278. It's as

  1279. if we

  1280. kept the

  1281. law because

  1282. of our

  1283. faith in

  1284. the one

  1285. who did.

  1286. Isn't

  1287. our Savior

  1288. great?

  1289. Certainly

  1290. He is,

  1291. if our

  1292. sin is

  1293. great.

  1294. And it

  1295. is.

  1296. Number

  1297. three,

  1298. the law

  1299. is a

  1300. tool used

  1301. to bring

  1302. others to

  1303. Christ.

  1304. The law

  1305. is a

  1306. tool used

  1307. to bring

  1308. others to

  1309. Christ.

  1310. A great

  1311. example of

  1312. this, from

  1313. the ministry

  1314. of Jesus

  1315. in Matthew

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  1316. chapter 19,

  1317. the rich

  1318. young ruler

  1319. comes to

  1320. Him and

  1321. says,

  1322. Teacher,

  1323. what must I

  1324. do to

  1325. have eternal

  1326. life?

  1327. Remember Jesus'

  1328. response to

  1329. him?

  1330. Keep the

  1331. commandments.

  1332. And the

  1333. new

  1334. ruler says,

  1335. which ones?

  1336. And he

  1337. lists off

  1338. some of

  1339. them for

  1340. him.

  1341. He

  1342. says,

  1343. all of

  1344. these I

  1345. have

  1346. kept.

  1347. I am

  1348. righteous.

  1349. I am

  1350. doing

  1351. well.

  1352. What does

  1353. Jesus then

  1354. do?

  1355. He gives

  1356. him a

  1357. command that

  1358. he knows

  1359. he cannot

  1360. keep.

  1361. He tells

  1362. the rich

  1363. young ruler

  1364. to take

  1365. all that

  1366. he has,

  1367. sell it,

  1368. and give

  1369. it to

  1370. the poor.

  1371. And what

  1372. does the

  1373. rich young

  1374. ruler do?

  1375. He goes

  1376. away sad

  1377. because his

  1378. riches,

  1379. his wealth

  1380. was great.

  1381. And what

  1382. the text

  1383. literally

  1384. means is

  1385. to him,

  1386. it was

  1387. great.

  1388. He valued

  1389. it.

  1390. He desired

  1391. it.

  1392. His

  1393. sin nature

  1394. worshipped

  1395. it over

  1396. God.

  1397. So the

  1398. law is

  1399. brought in

  1400. to humble

  1401. the sinner.

  1402. In other

  1403. cases in

  1404. scripture,

  1405. Jesus does

  1406. the same

  1407. thing,

  1408. and the

  1409. person

  1410. repents

  1411. and

  1412. believes.

  1413. The

  1414. person who

  1415. is not

  1416. humble

  1417. doesn't

  1418. need the

  1419. grace of

  1420. God.

  1421. They

  1422. need the

  1423. law to

  1424. bring to

  1425. them

  1426. humility.

  1427. So that

  1428. they can

  1429. receive the

  1430. grace of

  1431. God.

  1432. Use the

  1433. law in

  1434. your gospel

  1435. presentations.

  1436. Point out

  1437. to people

  1438. how sinful

  1439. they are

  1440. at their

  1441. very core.

  1442. And then

  1443. give them

  1444. the grace

  1445. of God.

  1446. Tell them

  1447. of what a

  1448. great Savior

  1449. we have.

  1450. Somebody

  1451. comes to

  1452. you already

  1453. humble,

  1454. don't beat

  1455. them up

  1456. with the

  1457. law.

  1458. Then it's

  1459. time for

  1460. grace.

  1461. Some people

  1462. get through

  1463. step one

  1464. on their

  1465. own and

  1466. don't need

  1467. your help.

  1468. They just

  1469. need step

  1470. two.

  1471. The law

  1472. was given

  1473. to us

  1474. as a tool

  1475. to expose

  1476. our sin.

  1477. It arouses

  1478. it.

  1479. It ruins

  1480. us when we

  1481. realize how

  1482. self-righteously

  1483. we have

  1484. tried to

  1485. live.

  1486. And it

  1487. reveals just

  1488. how sinful

  1489. we

  1490. actually

  1491. are.

  1492. Oh,

  1493. what a

  1494. Savior.
