  1. Finally, um, figured out what we were going to do and, uh, confirmed through a lot of things.

  2. First John mentioned about possibly doing a series on sin and temptation.

  3. And we began to kind of pray about it and, uh, asked around and like, I asked three people last week and like three out of four is like something on temptation would be really good.

  4. So it was just cool to see how the Lord kind of narrowed that down.

  5. Um, so we're going to kind of begin a long series on that.

  6. And tonight is going to be kind of like an introduction or overview of what we're going to be kind of going after.

  7. So I invite you to turn to Ephesians chapter two.

  8. Thank you for praying for my voice.

  9. Those of you who were, I know a lot of you were, um, grateful to kind of return to me a few days ago.

  10. So, um, thanks man.

  11. Water, not coffee.

  12. Um, Ephesians chapter two.

  13. We're going to start reading in verse one.

  14. I'm going to read one through five.

  15. And you were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you once walked following the course of this world,

  16. following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is not work in the sons of disobedience,

  17. among whom we all once lived in the passage of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind,

  18. and were by nature children of wrath like the rest of mankind.

  19. But God being rich in mercy because of his great love, which he loved us,

  20. even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.

  21. By grace, you have been saved.

  22. Just pray with me for a moment.

  23. Father, we want to approach your word with reverence and awe tonight.

  24. And I pray that you would work it into our hearts.

  25. Holy Spirit, those who don't know you, um, would be convicted of sin.

  26. Lord, that you would show them your grace and your salvation.

  27. I pray that those who do know you, Father, would be strengthened through what goes on in the next few weeks

  28. through your word and what we share from your word about sin and temptation.

  29. I pray we would see a lot of victory as a result.

  30. Lord, I pray we would be doers of the word and not just hearers.

  31. I pray that people would just sit and come here to be cool and just learn something and go home,

  32. but to be obedient and to allow your word to saturate into our hearts.

  33. Lord, we offer ourselves up to you.

  34. Be glorified.

  35. In Christ's name, amen.

  36. First of all, in this passage, we see some things mentioned.

  37. This is Paul writing to the Christians in Ephesus,

  38. and he's looking back, trying to remind them of their past life,

  39. their past life that was in sin and in bondage.

  40. And he's saying, you were dead.

  41. It's all kind of written in like the past tense, something that you were in.

  42. And this idea of what sin is, we'll just briefly talk about what sin is.

  43. We talk about it a lot here.

  44. Hopefully we talk about grace just as much or even more as sin.

  45. But briefly, sin in essence is the word itself.

  46. A lot of times it means missing the mark.

  47. And we were created to walk with God, to glorify God, and reflect who he was.

  48. And we failed to do that.

  49. All of us sinned against God.

  50. All of us.

  51. We've rebelled against God.

  52. And so we've forfeited the reason for our existence because of that, because of our sin.

  53. Because we were designed and created to know God, to fellowship with him, and to glorify him.

  54. And so sin destroyed that.

  55. So we missed the mark for which we were created originally to do.

  56. So all of us, if you want like another picture of what sin is, it is giving our love and our affection, our worship, our adoration, whatever,

  57. and giving it to things that are infinitely lesser than God, unworthier than God.

  58. And we've all done that.

  59. We've all loved many, many other things.

  60. And it hasn't been God.

  61. We've put people, relationships, hobbies, sports, looks, whatever, ahead of God.

  62. And you follow like that trail of your time and your money and your energy.

  63. It's going to like show you where your God is.

  64. And usually the living God is not the one that you find there.

  65. And for this word here that's used in verse 1, it says we were dead in our trespasses of sin.

  66. Also used in verse 6, dead in our trespasses.

  67. That word dead, it means corpse.

  68. It means that you were spiritually dead at one point in your life.

  69. And before you came to know Christ, this is what he's talking about.

  70. This was your condition.

  71. It wasn't just you were sick, you were dead.

  72. And a desperate condition to be in.

  73. So, Tim Keller wrote this about sin.

  74. He said, sin isn't only doing bad things.

  75. It is more fundamentally making good things into ultimate things.

  76. Sin is building your life and meaning on anything, even a very good thing, more than God.

  77. Whatever we have built our life on will drive us and enslave us.

  78. Sin is primarily idolatry.

  79. So, things that might not necessarily be evil or bad, we have turned into that by making them ultimate things,

  80. by loving them and pursuing them more than God.

  81. That's what we've done.

  82. All of us have done that.

  83. From the greatest to the least.

  84. And we're all guilty.

  85. So, the next part, we read in verse 4,

  86. But God, being rich in mercy, because of his great love for which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.

  87. By grace, you have been saved.

  88. So, God did not, like, leave man in that dreadful state, in the state of rebellion where he was going to have to judge and destroy man.

  89. But, according to his love and according to his grace, he provided a way for man to be reconciled, brought back into fellowship with himself,

  90. so we can know him again, but ultimately so that we can actually live a life that can glorify him again, like we originally were created to do.

  91. So, Christ came, died on the cross, lived a life, died on the cross, resurrected.

  92. And now, all those who put their complete trust and faith in Christ alone to have, like, a right standing with God and to be restored back into fellowship with God can have that through Christ alone.

  93. And it's something that we can't earn, that idea right there of how it's by grace you have been saved.

  94. And it kind of elaborates even after that, after our passage.

  95. We are saved by grace and not by works.

  96. This was something outside of our power to do.

  97. We couldn't save ourselves.

  98. We couldn't improve the condition that we were in.

  99. So, God came to save us.

  100. So, the question is, for some of you, I need to ask, where do you stand?

  101. There's not, like, a neutral time.

  102. You either have Christ in your life as your Savior, and you're trusting in him for salvation, and you're following him daily,

  103. or you're an enemy of God.

  104. There's not one in between.

  105. And if you've been coming around Christ's family, you've been around Christian friends,

  106. or you've been involved in a campus ministry, BCM, Campus Outreach, Wesley, whatever,

  107. and you're hearing gospel truth over and over.

  108. You're hearing things about grace.

  109. You're hearing things about who Christ was, the gospel.

  110. You're like, okay, well, that's cool.

  111. And then you go home, and you forget about it, and you wait until the next time to hear about it.

  112. You need to know, like, you're in a serious state without Christ.

  113. This isn't something you can just put off.

  114. God's not waiting for you to RSVP.

  115. He's not looking upon you as neutral.

  116. Well, he hasn't responded yet, or she hasn't responded yet.

  117. So, cool.

  118. It's like you need to understand that you're an enemy until you come to Christ.

  119. Turn to Romans 5 really quickly.

  120. So there's some urgency in this response.

  121. You need to come to Christ.

  122. You need to think about what you're doing and weigh the cost,

  123. but this is an urgent matter.

  124. Romans 5, verse 8, sorry.

    Romans 5:8

  125. Now, some people have an idea that God is all loving,

  126. that he would never punish anybody for their sin.

  127. There's just such thing as his wrath or his judgment.

  128. The other camp says that God is only wrath and God is only judgment,

  129. and both camps are wrong.

  130. The truth is that God is both loving, but he also is just,

  131. and that he will destroy sin, but he's willing to save sinners.

  132. Verse 8,

  133. But God shows his love for us,

  134. that while we were still sinners,

  135. Christ died for us.

  136. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood,

  137. much more shall I be saved by him from the wrath of God.

  138. You see that?

  139. We got, like, there's the love of God.

  140. Verse 8, the love of God on the table,

  141. the most purest, most awesome kind of love,

  142. unconditional love on the table.

  143. But then the next verse, it says,

  144. So that we might be saved from his wrath.

  145. Both things on the table there.

  146. And Christ came to save us.

  147. He said, well, I'm saved.

  148. You hear that a lot in the South.

  149. And you've got to ask the question,

  150. what are you saved from?

  151. And the answer is the wrath of God,

  152. the justice of God.

  153. And so if you don't know Christ,

  154. I beg you to come talk with me,

  155. talk with John, talk with Dan, talk with Alex,

  156. someone who brought you tonight.

  157. Like, don't rest.

  158. It's been like, oh, I'll wait till next Thursday.

  159. Don't do that.

  160. You're in a serious state.

  161. And God is loving and he's willing to come and save you by Christ.

  162. Read this next verse.

  163. Verse 10, it says,

  164. So you want restoration to God and have this forgiveness of your sin

  165. and relationship with God

  166. and a life that you can, again, walk with him and honor him.

  167. And Christ is the only way.

  168. He's the only way to be saved.

  169. So either in that condition,

  170. and you need to talk to somebody tonight,

  171. or you have met Christ,

  172. you have come to him broken

  173. and without any goodness of your own

  174. and said, I need you.

  175. Please save me.

  176. I have no hope.

  177. I will follow you

  178. and I will do whatever you ask me to do.

  179. I will live for you

  180. and I will die for you.

  181. Whatever it takes,

  182. I will follow you.

  183. So,

  184. if that's your case tonight,

  185. then you need to be aware.

  186. This is like a long introduction.

  187. Sorry.

  188. If you're a believer and you know Christ,

  189. there's two existing realities.

  190. You can just kind of write this down if you're taking notes.

  191. Two existing realities.

  192. And for all you

  193. campus outreach,

  194. beach projectors,

  195. SLPers,

  196. you probably have heard some of those before.

  197. It's not a new idea.

  198. But,

  199. they have this idea in Scripture about the kingdom of God.

  200. It means like,

  201. God's dominion,

  202. God's reign,

  203. God's rule being manifest throughout,

  204. you know,

  205. the earth,

  206. the universe.

  207. And,

  208. it's in a progress now,

  209. though.

  210. Like,

  211. it started when Christ came

  212. and it's ultimately moving towards,

  213. like,

  214. the second coming.

  215. Um,

  216. toward the fullness of the kingdom

  217. that manifests.

  218. But,

  219. there's two existing realities.

  220. That,

  221. the kingdom of God

  222. is here,

  223. but it's not fully here.

  224. And,

  225. I'll give you one,

  226. two examples of this real fast.

  227. Mark 1,

  228. don't have to turn there.

  229. Mark 1,

  230. 14,

  231. it says that Jesus came

  232. and he was proclaiming the gospel

  233. and he said this,

  234. the time is fulfilled

  235. and the kingdom of God

  236. is at hand

  237. or it's present

  238. right now.

  239. Repent and believe the gospel.

  240. So,

  241. the kingdom of God is here.

  242. Like,

  243. right now.

  244. Like,

  245. me,

  246. Jesus,

  247. I'm ushering in

  248. the kingdom.

  249. Here I am.

  250. And then in Matthew 6,

    Matthew 6:9

  251. verse 9,

  252. we read this.

  253. It's the,

  254. it's known as the Lord's Prayer,

  255. but it's really not the Lord's Prayer,

  256. it's the disciples' prayer.

  257. Because he's actually teaching

  258. the disciples how to pray.

  259. He says,

  260. pray like this,

  261. Our Father in heaven,

  262. hallowed be your name.

  263. Your kingdom come.

  264. Your will be done

  265. on earth

  266. as it is in heaven.

  267. So,

  268. Jesus is like saying,

  269. pray that his kingdom

  270. would come,

  271. that it would,

  272. that his will would be done,

  273. that everything he desired

  274. would manifest itself

  275. here on the earth.

  276. Pretty cool.

  277. So,

  278. the kingdom is here,

  279. but it's also coming.

  280. And the best analogy

  281. I can think of is like,

  282. it was really,

  283. really dark,

  284. pitch dark,

  285. can't see a thing,

  286. and the sun begins

  287. to come up.

  288. You know,

  289. you see the sun,

  290. the sun is rising,

  291. it's there,

  292. but,

  293. as it's coming up,

  294. it kind of pierces

  295. through the darkness,

  296. but it's not fully up

  297. in the air yet,

  298. so,

  299. there's still some darkness

  300. that remains,

  301. some,

  302. you know,

  303. shady places.

  304. That's the way

  305. like the kingdom

  306. is right now.

  307. A long time ago,

  308. the 5th century,

  309. there was a guy

  310. named St. Augustine,

  311. or St. Augustine,

  312. if you're thinking

  313. about Florida,

  314. the same guy.

  315. He wrote a book

  316. that actually changed

  317. history,

  318. and how we think

  319. about history.

  320. You learn about him,

  321. some of you history

  322. may have probably

  323. heard about this before,

  324. but it was called

  325. The City of God.

  326. Pretty heavy read.

  327. I thought,

  328. I'll read that.

  329. I read that the first chapter,

  330. but I can't read it anymore.

  331. It was just very,

  332. I did read Confessions,

  333. slowly,

  334. but The City of God's

  335. intense,

  336. but it was the first time

  337. that somebody

  338. had said,

  339. history had a beginning,

  340. and it will have an end.

  341. Like,

  342. it started with creation,

  343. and now we're in

  344. the redemptive mode,

  345. and then it's moving

  346. toward the second coming.

  347. When the second coming

  348. comes,

  349. history,

  350. as we know it,

  351. is over.

  352. So,

  353. it began to,

  354. like,

  355. people began to think

  356. that way.

  357. History had an end

  358. in the beginning.

  359. So,

  360. this is helpful.

  361. Again,

  362. this was mentioned

  363. at Beach Project,

  364. some of you who went,

  365. but there's,

  366. you ever thought,

  367. like,

  368. what is the Bible?

  369. What's,

  370. like,

  371. some of the main,

  372. a main theme

  373. or storyline

  374. that I can follow

  375. as I read the Bible?

  376. Here's,

  377. here's four things

  378. really fast.

  379. This is,

  380. like,

  381. a process we see.

  382. Starts with,

  383. number one,

  384. creation.

  385. Creation.

  386. And that is that

  387. God created man

  388. and all things

  389. in the universe

  390. perfectly.

  391. Everything was good.

  392. It was without sin,

  393. and he created it

  394. for his glory,

  395. all of it.

  396. Secondly,

  397. after creation,

  398. there was fall.

  399. Man's sin

  400. rebelled against God

  401. and destroyed

  402. his relationship

  403. with God,

  404. put him at hostility

  405. towards God.

  406. It destroyed

  407. his relationships

  408. with other men.

  409. Our relationships

  410. with each other

  411. were broken

  412. and suffering

  413. and sin

  414. and death

  415. entered the world.

  416. So,

  417. that's fall.

  418. So,

  419. creation,

  420. fall.

  421. Then you have,

  422. thirdly,

  423. redemption.

  424. And this is

  425. God's

  426. at work

  427. in history

  428. to restore man

  429. back to himself

  430. so that man

  431. could again

  432. glorify him.

  433. And this really

  434. started when Christ

  435. came,

  436. lived,

  437. died,

  438. resurrected.

  439. That was kind of

  440. like the climax

  441. of that.

  442. And so,

  443. made it possible

  444. for man to be,

  445. like we just said,

  446. reconciled back

  447. to God.

  448. And then,

  449. so that's kind of

  450. like in the place

  451. we kind of live

  452. right now,

  453. like in the

  454. redemptive mode.

  455. Don't all of us

  456. are redeemed.

  457. That's kind of

  458. where we live.

  459. But fourthly,

  460. is a big word,

  461. consummation.

  462. C-O-M-S-U-M-M-A-T-I-O-M.

  463. Consummation.

  464. This is basically

  465. when Christ returns

  466. and restores

  467. all things

  468. and everything

  469. is made new

  470. and the new

  471. heaven,

  472. the new earth

  473. and everything

  474. is brought

  475. and restored

  476. back to its

  477. original form

  478. or even greater

  479. actually.

  480. So,

  481. the kingdom of God

  482. is here

  483. but it's coming.

  484. And,

  485. for the Christian

  486. life,

  487. like right now,

  488. we're kind of

  489. like in a really

  490. unique period

  491. of time,

  492. period of history.

  493. And,

  494. Christ has

  495. said,

  496. I will come back.

  497. And,

  498. he actually calls

  499. these the last days.

  500. We live in

  501. the last days.

  502. That doesn't mean

  503. like,

  504. you know,

  505. we'll get into all that.

  506. Don't take it too far.

  507. It just means like,

  508. this is called

  509. the last days.

  510. Jesus said that.

  511. After I leave,

  512. it will be like

  513. the last days.

  514. So,

  515. we can experience

  516. as Christians,

  517. we can see

  518. the

  519. fruit of

  520. what Christ

  521. has done.

  522. But,

  523. we can't fully

  524. see his power

  525. manifested yet.

  526. We still have,

  527. we live in the world,

  528. we see many,

  529. many things in the world.

  530. The Bible uses

  531. phrases like,

  532. you are saved.

  533. Then,

  534. like in,

  535. 1 Corinthians 1,

  536. 18,

  537. it says,

  538. you are being saved.

  539. So,

  540. this idea that we are

  541. saved and we're being

  542. saved.

  543. The kingdom is here,

  544. yet it's coming.

  545. So,

  546. a Christian

  547. has to deal

  548. with a lot of things

  549. in this life

  550. that are not

  551. fully redeemed.

  552. And,

  553. this is going to

  554. kind of bring us

  555. to our topic

  556. a little bit.

  557. I like our intro

  558. to understand

  559. this is where we live

  560. right now.

  561. We're not

  562. fully redeemed

  563. yet.

  564. So,

  565. if most of us

  566. are honest,

  567. and you get like

  568. a,

  569. guys,

  570. you sit down

  571. one day with me

  572. and get lunch

  573. or breakfast

  574. or girls,

  575. you go sit

  576. with somebody else.

  577. I don't think

  578. I'll meet you

  579. but somebody else

  580. that knows Christ

  581. and another believer.

  582. You begin to share

  583. about your Christian life.

  584. I think most of us

  585. because it's just

  586. the truth.

  587. Most of us

  588. don't live

  589. like in the victory

  590. that Christ

  591. has to cure for us.

  592. We live

  593. depressed,

  594. defeated.

  595. We don't,

  596. we don't,

  597. we live between

  598. fears and hopes

  599. back and forth.

  600. We hope our state

  601. is good

  602. and we kind of,

  603. we hope that we're

  604. doing okay

  605. but we're normally not.

  606. It's just like this

  607. idea that we just

  608. live in a constant

  609. defeat all the time.

  610. So,

  611. though Christ

  612. has saved us,

  613. we barely,

  614. we feel like we're

  615. just barely hanging

  616. on spiritually.

  617. Like,

  618. it's not really good

  619. and we come to

  620. places like this,

  621. come to a worship

  622. service somewhere

  623. or a campus

  624. Bible study,

  625. whatever.

  626. It's all smiles

  627. and you know how to like,

  628. we're really good

  629. at hiding our sin

  630. from people.

  631. Really good.

  632. I'm pretty good.

  633. Unless you know me

  634. really well like

  635. my roommates do

  636. and I know

  637. something's going on.

  638. But,

  639. we're really good.

  640. Most of us don't

  641. live in victory.

  642. We don't have

  643. the inner peace,

  644. the joy,

  645. the confidence

  646. we should have

  647. before God.

  648. We have a lot of

  649. junk that we're

  650. trying to hide.

  651. So,

  652. we kind of feel like,

  653. we're kind of like

  654. this ship

  655. getting thrown

  656. everywhere by a storm

  657. and just like

  658. crossing our fingers

  659. when we get

  660. to the other.

  661. We feel like

  662. we're barely

  663. hanging on.

  664. And that's the

  665. truth with me too

  666. at times.

  667. So,

  668. I have a

  669. letter here

  670. that

  671. a guy

  672. who actually

  673. attends

  674. John MacArthur's

  675. church

  676. in California

  677. and

  678. he's really

  679. depressed.

  680. You can tell.

  681. And this is kind of

  682. like what he writes

  683. MacArthur.

  684. He says,

  685. Dear Pastor John,

  686. I've been attending

  687. Grace,

  688. that's the name of

  689. the church,

  690. attending Grace

  691. for several years

  692. and as a result

  693. of a growing

  694. conviction in my

  695. heart

  696. and seemingly

  697. temptations

  698. have come

  699. and I am

  700. powerless to stop

  701. and constantly

  702. succumbing to them

  703. in the talks

  704. with other

  705. golly men

  706. around me.

  707. I have

  708. growing doubts

  709. that have led

  710. me to believe

  711. that I'm not

  712. saved.

  713. How sad

  714. it is,

  715. John,

  716. for me not

  717. to be able

  718. to enter in

  719. because of the

  720. sin that clings

  721. to me

  722. and from

  723. which I long

  724. to be free.

  725. How bizarre

  726. for one who

  727. teaches in a

  728. Sunday school

  729. with heartfelt

  730. conviction,

  731. a trainer in

  732. discipleship,

  733. evangelism,

  734. a seminarian,

  735. a discipler.

  736. So many times

  737. I have determined

  738. in my heart

  739. to repent,

  740. to shake

  741. loose on the

  742. sin that I

  743. have,

  744. to forsake

  745. all for Jesus

  746. only to find

  747. myself doing

  748. the sin I

  749. don't want to

  750. do and not

  751. doing the good

  752. that I want to

  753. do.

  754. After my

  755. fiance and I

  756. broke up,

  757. I memorized

  758. Ephesians as an

  759. all-out effort

  760. to make war

  761. against sin

  762. only to find

  763. myself weaker

  764. and more painfully

  765. aware of my

  766. sinfulness,

  767. more prone

  768. to sin

  769. than ever

  770. before,

  771. grabbing cheap

  772. thrills to

  773. push back

  774. pain of lost

  775. love,

  776. mostly in the

  777. heart,

  778. John,

  779. the best word

  780. that counts

  781. the most in

  782. the heart

  783. is where you

  784. live.

  785. I sin because

  786. I'm a sinner.

  787. I'm like a

  788. soldier without my

  789. armor running

  790. across the

  791. battlefield getting

  792. shot up by the

  793. fiery darts of

  794. the enemy.

  795. I couldn't

  796. leave the

  797. church if I

  798. wanted to.

  799. I love the

  800. people.

  801. I'm enthralled

  802. by the gospel

  803. of the beautiful

  804. Messiah.

  805. I'm a pile

  806. of manure

  807. on the white

  808. marble floor

  809. of Christ,

  810. a mongrel dog

  811. that snuck in

  812. the back door

  813. at the king's

  814. banquet to

  815. lick the crumbs

  816. up the floor

  817. and by being

  818. close to other

  819. Christians who

  820. I hope to get

  821. some of the

  822. rich blessings

  823. of Christ,

  824. I come of an

  825. overflow,

  826. excuse me,

  827. I get some of

  828. the overflow and

  829. I ask that you

  830. would pray for

  831. me as you think

  832. best.

  833. When I read

  834. that I thought

  835. like man I

  836. haven't felt like

  837. that before.

  838. Like I'm so

  839. lost.

  840. I feel like I

  841. just, I

  842. can't defeat

  843. the sin that's

  844. in my life,

  845. but I love

  846. Christ, I love

  847. the people of

  848. God, I feel

  849. like a pile of

  850. manure on the

  851. white marble

  852. floor of

  853. Christ.

  854. I love to be

  855. around people

  856. who love

  857. Christ and

  858. almost feel like

  859. I can't get

  860. around them

  861. because they

  862. have such a

  863. good walk

  864. with God

  865. and I

  866. don't.

  867. This is how

  868. a lot of us

  869. have felt at

  870. some point and

  871. maybe even

  872. some of us

  873. now.

  874. So, if

  875. you're feeling

  876. this way,

  877. know that

  878. it's not

  879. unusual,

  880. okay?

  881. People that

  882. have experienced

  883. Christ and

  884. have been

  885. saved by his

  886. grace and

  887. have the

  888. Holy Spirit,

  889. this is typical

  890. of what you

  891. actually might

  892. think.

  893. This guy

  894. actually doesn't

  895. sound like an

  896. unbeliever,

  897. he actually

  898. sounds like a

  899. Christian in

  900. Romans 7,

  901. he sounds like

  902. Paul,

  903. saying I

  904. can't do

  905. the good

  906. that I

  907. want to do.

  908. Nathan,

  909. our pastor,

  910. is actually

  911. preaching on

  912. that passage.

  913. He started

  914. that two

  915. weeks ago and

  916. is still in

  917. Romans 7.

  918. But we're

  919. going to kind

  920. of talk about

  921. temptation now.

  922. And I

  923. have, I

  924. think,

  925. I think three

  926. things to

  927. look at,

  928. okay?

  929. First of all,

  930. what is

  931. temptation?

  932. What is

  933. temptation?

  934. It's an

  935. enticement

  936. to sin.

  937. Whether

  938. arising from

  939. within yourself

  940. or an

  941. outside

  942. circumstance.

  943. It's an

  944. enticement

  945. to take our

  946. God-given

  947. desires that

  948. God gives

  949. us and

  950. taking those

  951. desires beyond

  952. the God-given

  953. limits.

  954. That's a good

  955. way of phrasing

  956. that.

  957. It's an

  958. enticement

  959. to sin.

  960. Sin is a

  961. product.

  962. And temptation

  963. is like the

  964. selling of it

  965. to you.

  966. You know,

  967. you want to

  968. buy this?

  969. Come on.

  970. You want

  971. that.

  972. It's an

  973. allurement.

  974. we may be

  975. seeking something

  976. else harder

  977. than the

  978. Lord that

  979. He doesn't

  980. want for

  981. us or

  982. not being

  983. patient for

  984. something that

  985. He does

  986. want and

  987. pursuing it

  988. like in an

  989. immodest,

  990. improper way.

  991. That's what

  992. temptation is.

  993. It's the

  994. sale that's

  995. going down.

  996. So,

  997. I have,

  998. under this

  999. question,

  1000. I have a

  1001. few things

  1002. that a

  1003. good way to

  1004. define something

  1005. is by defining

  1006. what it doesn't

  1007. mean.

  1008. temptation.

  1009. So,

  1010. we're going

  1011. to start

  1012. with that.

  1013. Some myths

  1014. about temptation.

  1015. I just

  1016. don't know

  1017. that first

  1018. question about

  1019. what is

  1020. temptation.

  1021. Temptation

  1022. itself is

  1023. not sin.

  1024. A lot of

  1025. people,

  1026. I'm just

  1027. so sinful,

  1028. God's angry

  1029. with me.

  1030. I'm like,

  1031. what happened

  1032. man?

  1033. I was doing

  1034. this one

  1035. day and

  1036. I was

  1037. attracted to

  1038. this girl

  1039. and immediately

  1040. I caught

  1041. myself and

  1042. I just

  1043. turned away

  1044. and I

  1045. began to

  1046. pray.

  1047. I sinned

  1048. against God.

  1049. I'm like,

  1050. no you

  1051. didn't,

  1052. man.

  1053. You didn't

  1054. like carry

  1055. it that

  1056. far.

  1057. Like,

  1058. temptation

  1059. itself is

  1060. not sin.

  1061. Here's

  1062. what it

  1063. does become

  1064. sin.

  1065. Temptation

  1066. becomes sin

  1067. when you

  1068. act or

  1069. you dwell

  1070. on that

  1071. particular

  1072. thing.

  1073. You take

  1074. action on

  1075. it or

  1076. you just

  1077. muse over

  1078. it so

  1079. that it

  1080. controls

  1081. your mind.

  1082. So,

  1083. I kind

  1084. of got

  1085. into a

  1086. little

  1087. disagreement

  1088. about that

  1089. with a

  1090. guy who

  1091. started to

  1092. say that

  1093. temptation

  1094. was sin

  1095. and I

  1096. just had to

  1097. remind him

  1098. about Hebrews

  1099. 4,

  1100. 15,

  1101. where it

  1102. says that

  1103. Christ was

  1104. tempted in

  1105. every way

  1106. we were,

  1107. yet without

  1108. sin.

  1109. So,

  1110. if temptation

  1111. itself was

  1112. sin,

  1113. then Christ

  1114. cannot be

  1115. the perfect

  1116. Messiah.

  1117. So,

  1118. that was

  1119. the end

  1120. of that

  1121. debate.

  1122. Number

  1123. two,

  1124. number

  1125. two,

  1126. giving into

  1127. temptation,

  1128. and we're

  1129. talking about

  1130. from the

  1131. perspective of

  1132. a believer,

  1133. okay,

  1134. from a

  1135. Christian,

  1136. giving into

  1137. temptation

  1138. disappoints

  1139. God or

  1140. angers

  1141. God.

  1142. God.

  1143. What I

  1144. mean by

  1145. that is

  1146. that you

  1147. think that

  1148. it destroys

  1149. your relationship

  1150. with God,

  1151. that things

  1152. are over

  1153. because you

  1154. sinned.

  1155. Are you

  1156. tempted?

  1157. Excuse me.

  1158. While the

  1159. Lord might

  1160. be displeased

  1161. that you

  1162. did sin,

  1163. it doesn't

  1164. destroy your

  1165. relationship

  1166. with God.

  1167. You are

  1168. accepted and

  1169. loved on the

  1170. basis of what

  1171. Christ has

  1172. done, and

  1173. that's eternal,

  1174. and that's

  1175. unchanging,

  1176. but just

  1177. like, you

  1178. know, last

  1179. year, I

  1180. remember I

  1181. got into a

  1182. really intense

  1183. argument with

  1184. my dad, who

  1185. really had it

  1186. out about

  1187. something.

  1188. It was over

  1189. something that

  1190. was kind of

  1191. a big deal,

  1192. we just

  1193. disagreed,

  1194. and I was

  1195. like not

  1196. respectful,

  1197. and I was

  1198. a jerk,

  1199. and there

  1200. was some

  1201. tension,

  1202. hostility in

  1203. my relationship

  1204. with my dad,

  1205. right, but

  1206. a few weeks

  1207. later, I

  1208. just thought,

  1209. like, man,

  1210. I was wrong,

  1211. and I went

  1212. and told my

  1213. dad to

  1214. forgive me,

  1215. and we

  1216. were brought

  1217. back together,

  1218. and our

  1219. relationship

  1220. was not,

  1221. you know,

  1222. rocky anymore.

  1223. Secondly, or

  1224. excuse me,

  1225. thirdly, under

  1226. this, believers,

  1227. this is a myth,

  1228. okay, believers

  1229. can fall into

  1230. temptation.

  1231. I've been

  1232. guilty of this

  1233. before, but I've

  1234. been trying to

  1235. change my

  1236. thinking for a

  1237. while, okay,

  1238. as a believer,

  1239. you have the

  1240. Holy Spirit,

  1241. and you

  1242. actually have

  1243. been given

  1244. the power,

  1245. to resist

  1246. temptation,

  1247. and we

  1248. use the

  1249. word like,

  1250. I fell

  1251. into temptation,

  1252. or, you

  1253. know, like

  1254. that kind of

  1255. language,

  1256. it's almost

  1257. like, it

  1258. got me,

  1259. and you're

  1260. almost like

  1261. not taking

  1262. responsibility,

  1263. sin doesn't

  1264. just happen,

  1265. you deliberately

  1266. sit against

  1267. God, there's a

  1268. moment in your

  1269. mind where you

  1270. literally cross the

  1271. line, it's not

  1272. like you're just

  1273. like walking

  1274. around this

  1275. fallen guy,

  1276. and you

  1277. just fell

  1278. in a trap,

  1279. it's like,

  1280. no, what

  1281. happened?

  1282. So, believers

  1283. don't just

  1284. fall into

  1285. temptation,

  1286. and most

  1287. deliberately

  1288. step into

  1289. it, and

  1290. like, cross

  1291. that line.

  1292. So, number

  1293. four, it is

  1294. always best to

  1295. run away from

  1296. temptation, that's

  1297. kind of a myth.

  1298. It's certainly

  1299. true that

  1300. sometimes the

  1301. best thing to

  1302. do is avoid

  1303. things, okay?

  1304. But there's a

  1305. reality that

  1306. in some

  1307. circumstances, you

  1308. can't escape.

  1309. Things are going

  1310. to happen, like

  1311. temptation is

  1312. going to come,

  1313. so if your

  1314. battle tactic is

  1315. just to avoid

  1316. every situation,

  1317. you won't be

  1318. able to always

  1319. do that.

  1320. So, Martin

  1321. Luther once

  1322. said,

  1323. temptations, of

  1324. course, cannot

  1325. be avoided,

  1326. but because we

  1327. cannot prevent

  1328. the birds from

  1329. flying over our

  1330. heads, there's

  1331. no need that

  1332. we should let

  1333. them make a

  1334. mess on our

  1335. hair.

  1336. So, this idea

  1337. of like, things

  1338. are always going

  1339. to come, but

  1340. we don't need to

  1341. let it settle

  1342. in on us.

  1343. Fifthly, this is

  1344. the one I used

  1345. to believe,

  1346. maturity will

  1347. eliminate

  1348. temptation.

  1349. Man, like this

  1350. dude, he's been

  1351. walking with

  1352. Jesus a long

  1353. time, man, when

  1354. I get to where

  1355. he is, I won't

  1356. have to struggle

  1357. with this anymore,

  1358. I'm just going

  1359. to be okay.

  1360. Not true.

  1361. Actually, a sign

  1362. of maturity in

  1363. a believer is

  1364. that God is

  1365. actually revealing

  1366. more and more

  1367. sin to you.

  1368. Like, you can

  1369. form the outside

  1370. of your behavior,

  1371. look good, God's

  1372. going to go

  1373. after your motives

  1374. and why you're

  1375. doing those

  1376. things.

  1377. He's never

  1378. going to let

  1379. you go about

  1380. that.

  1381. So, those are

  1382. a few myths

  1383. about temptation.

  1384. But, first of

  1385. all, also under

  1386. this, know that

  1387. temptation is

  1388. common and it's

  1389. universal.

  1390. It's common

  1391. to everybody.

  1392. Joseph was

  1393. tempted in

  1394. Genesis by

  1395. Potiphar's wife.

  1396. He got David

  1397. tempted by

  1398. Bathsheba and

  1399. he followed

  1400. through with it.

  1401. Joseph ran.

  1402. And then Jesus

  1403. himself tempted

  1404. by Satan in

  1405. Matthew 4 so

  1406. that he would

  1407. sin and not be

  1408. the perfect

  1409. Messiah that

  1410. was needed.

  1411. So, 1

  1412. Corinthians 10

  1413. 13 says this,

  1414. no temptation

  1415. has overcome

  1416. you.

  1417. It is not

  1418. common to

  1419. man.

  1420. So, temptation

  1421. is common

  1422. and universal.

  1423. So, it's not

  1424. unusual.

  1425. Second

  1426. question.

  1427. That was the

  1428. first one.

  1429. My voice is

  1430. better.

  1431. My throat is

  1432. going to be

  1433. dry.

  1434. Sorry.

  1435. What are the

  1436. sources of

  1437. temptation?

  1438. That's the

  1439. second question.

  1440. Right now, I

  1441. think you're

  1442. still in the

  1443. Ephesians 2 and

  1444. that's what we're

  1445. going to look at.

  1446. So, stay there.

  1447. Back to our

  1448. original text.

  1449. There's usually

  1450. three things that

  1451. are the sources of

  1452. temptation.

  1453. And let it be

  1454. said, you can't

  1455. really section

  1456. these off.

  1457. They all kind

  1458. of work together

  1459. in a lot of

  1460. ways.

  1461. So, I'm like,

  1462. well, this day

  1463. this one got me

  1464. and that day

  1465. this one got me.

  1466. They kind of

  1467. work together

  1468. simultaneously a lot

  1469. of times.

  1470. First of all,

  1471. if you look at

  1472. verse 1 in

  1473. Ephesians 2,

  1474. it says,

  1475. and when she

  1476. once walked,

  1477. following the

  1478. course of this

  1479. world.

  1480. The first one

  1481. is the world.

  1482. That's the

  1483. first thing.

  1484. That's where

  1485. a source of

  1486. temptation comes

  1487. from, the

  1488. world.

  1489. And flip to

  1490. hold your hand

  1491. in Ephesians 2,

  1492. but I just

  1493. got a few

  1494. places for you

  1495. to turn.

  1496. 1 John 2.

  1497. 1 John 2.15.

  1498. 1 John 2.15.

  1499. It says,

  1500. Do not love

  1501. the world

  1502. or the things

  1503. in the world.

  1504. If anyone

  1505. loves the world,

  1506. the love of the

  1507. Father is not

  1508. in him.

  1509. For all that is

  1510. in the world,

  1511. the desires of

  1512. the flesh,

  1513. the desires of

  1514. the eyes,

  1515. and the pride

  1516. of possessions,

  1517. is not from

  1518. the Father,

  1519. but is from

  1520. the world.

  1521. And the world

  1522. is passing

  1523. away along

  1524. with its

  1525. desires.

  1526. Whatever does

  1527. the will of

  1528. God,

  1529. abides forever.

  1530. So, the

  1531. word world

  1532. is used

  1533. right here

  1534. in 1 John 2.

  1535. It's the word

  1536. cosmos.

  1537. It means

  1538. like the

  1539. order or

  1540. the system

  1541. of the world.

  1542. And it's

  1543. used in this

  1544. case like in

  1545. a negative

  1546. connotation.

  1547. It's not

  1548. being spoke

  1549. of in a

  1550. positive way.

  1551. It means

  1552. like a

  1553. world that's

  1554. turned and

  1555. is now

  1556. alienated from

  1557. its creator.

  1558. That's

  1559. kind of

  1560. what it's

  1561. used as.

  1562. And it

  1563. encompasses

  1564. a ton of

  1565. things.

  1566. False

  1567. religions,

  1568. false

  1569. philosophies,

  1570. ideas of

  1571. man,

  1572. just whatever.

  1573. It could

  1574. mean like

  1575. even just

  1576. the ads

  1577. or commercials

  1578. you see

  1579. that entice

  1580. you to

  1581. spend your

  1582. money on

  1583. something that

  1584. God would

  1585. not have you

  1586. to spend

  1587. your money

  1588. on,

  1589. something that

  1590. simple.

  1591. guys and

  1592. girls can

  1593. mean like

  1594. in modest

  1595. clothing to

  1596. entice or

  1597. to allure the

  1598. opposite sex.

  1599. The world is

  1600. like the

  1601. things that

  1602. do allure

  1603. us and

  1604. pull us

  1605. in.

  1606. It's the

  1607. things in

  1608. the world.

  1609. So that's

  1610. what the

  1611. world is.

  1612. And also

  1613. it says it

  1614. there, I'll

  1615. read this

  1616. back in

  1617. Ephesians 2

    Ephesians 2:3

  1618. verse 3

  1619. you can

  1620. flip back

  1621. there if

  1622. you like

  1623. back to

  1624. Ephesians

  1625. it says

  1626. in verse 3

  1627. we're going

  1628. to see the

  1629. third thing

  1630. verse 3

  1631. among whom

  1632. we all

  1633. once lived

  1634. in the

  1635. passions of

  1636. our flesh

  1637. carrying out

  1638. the desires

  1639. of the

  1640. body and

  1641. the mind.

  1642. So

  1643. the flesh

  1644. you got the

  1645. world and

  1646. now the

  1647. flesh.

  1648. That's the

  1649. second source

  1650. of our sin.

  1651. And

  1652. it means

  1653. like

  1654. if you're

  1655. being controlled

  1656. by the

  1657. flesh

  1658. it's like

  1659. what does

  1660. your flesh

  1661. do?

  1662. It gets

  1663. hungry

  1664. it desires

  1665. comfort

  1666. it likes

  1667. to sleep

  1668. it likes

  1669. sex

  1670. those are

  1671. the things

  1672. that like

  1673. are of

  1674. the flesh

  1675. and all

  1676. those things

  1677. are not bad

  1678. things right?

  1679. Like they're

  1680. natural things

  1681. that happen

  1682. but what

  1683. the sinful

  1684. fallen flesh

  1685. is that

  1686. it seems

  1687. to allow

  1688. those things

  1689. to like

  1690. dominate you

  1691. or control

  1692. you

  1693. and run

  1694. your life

  1695. what you

  1696. live for

  1697. is to

  1698. fulfill those

  1699. desires

  1700. that you're

  1701. having

  1702. that's

  1703. ultimate

  1704. and that's

  1705. when you'll

  1706. do anything

  1707. to get

  1708. fulfillment

  1709. for those

  1710. things

  1711. that's

  1712. why

  1713. you know

  1714. people that

  1715. are just

  1716. controlled by

  1717. sexual sin

  1718. it starts

  1719. with this

  1720. and moves

  1721. with this

  1722. and eventually

  1723. leads to them

  1724. raping somebody

  1725. and then ultimately

  1726. prison

  1727. so you begin

  1728. to let those

  1729. desires

  1730. control you

  1731. and the

  1732. flesh is

  1733. fallen

  1734. and it will

  1735. die

  1736. like

  1737. your body

  1738. that you work

  1739. on and take

  1740. care of every

  1741. day

  1742. like it

  1743. will die

  1744. this

  1745. person

  1746. because it

  1747. has sinned

  1748. against god

  1749. thirdly

  1750. you've got the

  1751. world

  1752. the flesh

  1753. and now the

  1754. devil

  1755. you see that

  1756. in verse 2

  1757. back in

  1758. ephesians

  1759. following the

  1760. course of this

  1761. world

  1762. following the

  1763. prince

  1764. of the

  1765. power of

  1766. the air

  1767. that's

  1768. referring to

  1769. satan

  1770. the spirit

  1771. the evil

  1772. spirit

  1773. of satan

  1774. that is now

  1775. at work

  1776. and the

  1777. sons of

  1778. disobedience

  1779. and all

  1780. three of these

  1781. things

  1782. the world

  1783. of flesh

  1784. and the

  1785. devil

  1786. we're going

  1787. to like

  1788. discuss more

  1789. in coming

  1790. thursday

  1791. nights

  1792. it's just

  1793. an overview

  1794. but satan

  1795. the word

  1796. means like

  1797. in hebrew

  1798. satan

  1799. it means like

  1800. adversary

  1801. or opponent

  1802. someone that's

  1803. like out to

  1804. destroy you

  1805. the devil

  1806. another word

  1807. is used

  1808. another name

  1809. for him

  1810. it means

  1811. like to

  1812. throw

  1813. or to

  1814. hurl

  1815. that's what

  1816. the devil

  1817. means

  1818. it means

  1819. that he's

  1820. slandering you

  1821. he's throwing

  1822. insults

  1823. against you

  1824. he takes

  1825. the truth

  1826. of god

  1827. and who

  1828. god is

  1829. and twists

  1830. it and makes

  1831. you try to

  1832. believe lies

  1833. about it

  1834. let me see

  1835. 1 peter

  1836. 5 8

  1837. says this

  1838. be sober

  1839. minded

  1840. be watchful

  1841. your adversary

  1842. the devil

  1843. prowls around

  1844. like a roaring

  1845. lion seeking

  1846. someone to

  1847. devour

  1848. so

  1849. the devil

  1850. is

  1851. this is the

  1852. kind of

  1853. thing that

  1854. the devil

  1855. would try

  1856. to say

  1857. to you

  1858. or lie

  1859. to you

  1860. remember

  1861. he's a

  1862. slanderer

  1863. he wants

  1864. to like

  1865. hurl up

  1866. insults

  1867. and slander

  1868. against you

  1869. he'll say

  1870. you're the

  1871. one who

  1872. has stolen

  1873. you've lied

  1874. you've

  1875. taken the

  1876. lord's name

  1877. in vain

  1878. you've

  1879. looked at

  1880. pornography

  1881. you've

  1882. seduced

  1883. girls

  1884. you have

  1885. allowed

  1886. these things

  1887. to control

  1888. you

  1889. you've

  1890. lied

  1891. to people

  1892. you've

  1893. lied

  1894. to your

  1895. parents

  1896. you

  1897. cheated

  1898. this

  1899. guy

  1900. that's

  1901. the kind

  1902. of stuff

  1903. that the devil

  1904. will do

  1905. is he'll

  1906. remind you

  1907. he'll like

  1908. point out

  1909. your sin

  1910. and make you

  1911. guilty

  1912. and convicted

  1913. and

  1914. none of us

  1915. are like

  1916. above

  1917. being attacked

  1918. by him

  1919. nobody

  1920. he's been

  1921. doing this

  1922. a long

  1923. time

  1924. he's very

  1925. good

  1926. this is

  1927. something

  1928. Spurgeon

  1929. said

  1930. it's

  1931. ridiculous

  1932. to see

  1933. on his

  1934. Christian

  1935. channels

  1936. on TV

  1937. all these

  1938. dudes

  1939. are like

  1940. put it on

  1941. Satan

  1942. we've got

  1943. you

  1944. and Satan

  1945. is really

  1946. laughing

  1947. but you've

  1948. got to be

  1949. kidding me

  1950. this is what

  1951. Spurgeon

  1952. said

  1953. he said

  1954. about

  1955. Satan

  1956. he is

  1957. more cunning

  1958. than the

  1959. wisest

  1960. how soon

  1961. he entangled

  1962. Solomon

  1963. Solomon

  1964. is known

  1965. as the

  1966. wise man

  1967. he got

  1968. he made

  1969. Solomon

  1970. sin

  1971. or tempted

  1972. Solomon

  1973. sin

  1974. he is

  1975. stronger

  1976. than the

  1977. strongest

  1978. how fatally

  1979. he overthrew

  1980. Samson

  1981. yes

  1982. even the

  1983. man

  1984. after God's

  1985. own heart

  1986. like David

  1987. he had

  1988. been led

  1989. to fall

  1990. into grievous

  1991. sins

  1992. by seduction

  1993. so he

  1994. took down

  1995. Solomon

  1996. the wisest

  1997. he took

  1998. down

  1999. Samson

  2000. the strongest

  2001. he took

  2002. down

  2003. David

  2004. the most

  2005. passionate

  2006. we're not

  2007. beyond

  2008. his assaults

  2009. so

  2010. those are

  2011. three things

  2012. the world

  2013. the flesh

  2014. and the devil

  2015. we're going to

  2016. unpack

  2017. those things

  2018. more

  2019. and figure

  2020. out

  2021. discuss

  2022. what the

  2023. word says

  2024. about overcoming

  2025. those particular

  2026. things

  2027. number three

  2028. number three

  2029. the third

  2030. question

  2031. what is

  2032. temptation

  2033. or the

  2034. source of

  2035. temptation

  2036. and secondly

  2037. question

  2038. can we have

  2039. victory over

  2040. sin and

  2041. temptation

  2042. and

  2043. so we have

  2044. victory over

  2045. sin and

  2046. temptation

  2047. the answer

  2048. is a

  2049. resounding

  2050. yes

  2051. you can

  2052. without

  2053. Christ

  2054. all you

  2055. can do

  2056. is sin

  2057. period

  2058. not one

  2059. good thing

  2060. those of us

  2061. who are in

  2062. Christ

  2063. you can

  2064. have victory over

  2065. sin and

  2066. temptation

  2067. like right

  2068. now

  2069. like in this

  2070. present life

  2071. flip to

  2072. I think you

  2073. only have

  2074. like three

  2075. places to turn

  2076. real fast

  2077. flip to 1

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  2078. John

  2079. chapter 2

  2080. again

  2081. excuse me

  2082. yeah

  2083. back to just

  2084. a second ago

  2085. 1 John

  2086. 2

  2087. 1 through

  2088. 2

  2089. and John

  2090. is writing

  2091. to Christians

  2092. and like

  2093. listening to the

  2094. language he

  2095. uses he

  2096. says

  2097. my little

  2098. children

  2099. excuse me

  2100. chapter 2

  2101. verse 1

  2102. my little

  2103. children

  2104. I'm writing

  2105. these things

  2106. to you

  2107. so that you

  2108. may not

  2109. sin

  2110. okay

  2111. so in other

  2112. words he's

  2113. saying like

  2114. you don't have

  2115. to do this

  2116. anymore

  2117. pretty cool

  2118. before like

  2119. all you could

  2120. do is sin

  2121. period

  2122. but now

  2123. that if you

  2124. are in

  2125. Christ

  2126. this is

  2127. what he

  2128. says

  2129. I'm writing

  2130. these things

  2131. to you

  2132. so that you

  2133. may not

  2134. sin

  2135. like you

  2136. don't have

  2137. to do this

  2138. anymore

  2139. type language

  2140. okay

  2141. but then he

  2142. says but

  2143. if anyone

  2144. does sin

  2145. we have an

  2146. advocate with

  2147. the father

  2148. Jesus Christ

  2149. the righteous

  2150. he is the

  2151. propitiation

  2152. for our sins

  2153. not only for

  2154. ours but also

  2155. for the sins

  2156. of the whole

  2157. world

  2158. so he's

  2159. saying as a

  2160. believer you

  2161. have the Holy

  2162. Spirit you've

  2163. been given a

  2164. new nature

  2165. you're born

  2166. again

  2167. you've been

  2168. given power

  2169. from God

  2170. God's enabling

  2171. to not sin

  2172. then he says

  2173. but if you do

  2174. like don't

  2175. despair

  2176. don't be like

  2177. I quit

  2178. I'm a miserable

  2179. failure

  2180. I'm not going

  2181. to follow Christ

  2182. anymore

  2183. he's like don't

  2184. do that

  2185. but if you do

  2186. sin

  2187. you have an

  2188. advocate of the

  2189. father Jesus

  2190. Christ the

  2191. righteous

  2192. so he's

  2193. trying to

  2194. remind you

  2195. of like

  2196. your ultimate

  2197. eternal standing

  2198. is on Christ

  2199. not on your

  2200. performance

  2201. pretty cool

  2202. so that's

  2203. one thing

  2204. there's a hundred

  2205. texts to look at

  2206. I'm going to

  2207. talk about this

  2208. more in the

  2209. future

  2210. but ultimately

  2211. I thought it

  2212. would be really

  2213. cool to bring

  2214. up this

  2215. turn over to

  2216. Hebrews 4

  2217. we're going to

  2218. kind of finish

  2219. in Hebrews

  2220. tonight

  2221. Hebrews 4

  2222. we can have

  2223. victory over

  2224. sin and

  2225. dictation

  2226. because

  2227. Christ has

  2228. made it

  2229. possible

  2230. he has

  2231. been there

  2232. he has shown

  2233. us the way

  2234. chapter 4

  2235. verse 14

  2236. going down

  2237. a little bit

  2238. the theme of

  2239. Hebrews is

  2240. Christ is

  2241. better

  2242. he's better

  2243. than the

  2244. old covenant

  2245. he's better

  2246. than all the

  2247. things that

  2248. have proceeded

  2249. before

  2250. pointed to

  2251. Christ

  2252. as the

  2253. ultimate

  2254. fulfillment

  2255. and here

  2256. he's talking

  2257. about

  2258. the high

  2259. priest

  2260. who is

  2261. one who

  2262. is like a

  2263. go-between

  2264. a mediator

  2265. between

  2266. God and

  2267. man

  2268. and

  2269. how

  2270. saying

  2271. Christ

  2272. is the

  2273. ultimate

  2274. high

  2275. priest

  2276. chapter 4

  2277. verse 14

  2278. since

  2279. let us

  2280. So that's a powerful passage.

2281. I'd encourage you to go and study on that one some more.

2282. We can draw near to God's throne in the grace of Christ based on what he has done.

2283. Before you had been consumed, his holiness would have destroyed you.

2284. He can't have sin in his presence.

2285. He's too pure, too righteous, too good, too loving to even look upon evil.

2286. But based on what Christ has done, we can approach the throne of grace with confidence.

2287. So, some of us might think, man, God is so distant.

2288. He can't relate to me at all.

  2289. I don't understand.

  2290. He's perfect.

  2291. He's sinless.

  2292. He hasn't suffered like I've suffered.

  2293. He doesn't know what sin's like.

  2294. Wrong.

  2295. He does.

2296. And Jesus came here and experienced everything far greater than you have, actually.

  2297. And here's why.

2298. I'll show you a few things first.

  2299. He suffered emotionally.

2300. He was emotionally, like, beaten down.

2301. Like, I can't imagine what he worked through.

  2302. He was persecuted.

2303. He was betrayed by his best friends.

2304. He was rejected and he was sorrowful.

2305. He's called the man of sorrows in Isaiah, prophesying about him 700 years before he came.

2306. So, he emotionally was afflicted.

  2307. He suffered physically.

  2308. He grew hungry.

  2309. He was fatigued.

  2310. He was thirsty.

  2311. He was beaten.

  2312. He was whipped.

  2313. He ultimately was killed.

2314. He went through the physical suffering like some of us wouldn't have imagined.

2315. He was tempted by all the forces of evil.

  2316. They turned it down.

2317. You know, Satan, in Matthew 4, I'll bet either John or I will probably use this as a main text at some point about the temptation of Christ.

2318. He was tempted with prestige, with power, you know.

  2319. He had everything.

2320. He could have had it, but he didn't.

2321. He denied it and stayed true to his mission, which was to come here and save us.

  2322. So, he was human.

  2323. We talked about this.

2324. John 1, you know, talked about this, that the Word became flesh, Christ, and dwelt among us.

  2325. So, he was human.

2326. He went through everything that we went through.

  2327. Okay?

2328. And like we just read here, he was tempted in every way.

  2329. Okay?

  2330. That's like a big emphasis there.

2331. In every way we were, yet without sin.

  2332. Okay?

2333. It's been made, and this wasn't something I thought about when I read it.

  2334. And that's a really good point.

2335. Because Christ never gave in to temptation, he never did.

2336. That meant that his temptations were much, much stronger than ours.

2337. And the reason why is we usually like break in and capitulate before like sin has like brought its full onslaught.

2338. You know, like it kind of starts with this, you know, like a little small enticement.

2339. And usually we're like, ah.

2340. And then maybe one more little thing, and then we break.

  2341. And we're like, okay.

2342. So, we never really feel like the full run of it.

2343. And an illustration of this is like, if I sat down and wrestled this really, really, you know, built, enormous, ripped dude.

  2344. You know?

2345. And like I'm arm wrestling this guy.

  2346. We're just like shaking.

2347. And I'm just like in my mind, I'm thinking like, I can't beat this guy.

2348. He's got to break my arm.

2349. I just kind of like break and give in.

2350. And I haven't fully taken everything that guy had to offer.

  2351. I just broke, right?

2352. But if I like beat him, like I absorbed all his strength.

2353. Like he brought me to everything we had.

2354. Like and I took him.

2355. So, like that's what Christ's temptations were like.

  2356. He never gave him.

2357. I mean, his temptations were far stronger than anything we experienced.

2358. He felt the full assault of it.

2359. So, flip over to chapter 12 now in Hebrews.

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

2360. Chapter 12 is where we're going to kind of wrap it up.

  2361. Chapter 12 and verse 1.

2362. Because Christ was sinless, he was able to be that perfect sacrifice on our behalf.

2363. This is an exhortation to Christians here.

  2364. Verse 1.

2365. Therefore, as we have been surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.

2366. That's probably all the believers that have gone before us that are now in heaven.

2367. Let us also lay aside every weight and sin which clings to us so closely.

2368. Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.

2369. Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith.

2370. Before the joy before him endured the cross.

2371. Despising the shame and the cedar at the right hand of the throne of God.

2372. We're only going to visit Tom there, but look at one part of that.

2373. This idea of the author or the founder of ESV.

  2374. Cool word there.

2375. It means a leader who goes ahead of a group in order to show the way to others.

2376. To prepare the way for others.

2377. Speaking of military, you're out with a special forces group or whatever.

2378. You arrange out a few years.

2379. Figure out maybe SEALs or whoever you like the best.

  2380. There's a small team of guys.

  2381. They're going on a mission.

2382. They come across this crazy ravine.

2383. They can't figure out what to do.

2384. They don't have time to go around it.

2385. They have to make a decision.

2386. So the leader, the commander of that group, takes a rope and he somehow, like as they were,

2387. like get it across the other side and get it wrapped around a tree or something.

2388. And like at great risk to himself, like he goes out first.

2389. Kind of like goes and goes across the rope on the other side.

2390. He secures the rope and he makes it safe for the guys behind him to follow him.

2391. And that's what this word kind of implies.

2392. This is what Christ has done.

  2393. Like he came here.

2394. He went through everything we went through.

  2395. Had the perfect life.

2396. You know, went to the cross.

  2397. Died on our behalf.

2398. And now he stands like the high priest sitting at the right hand of the Lord of God.

2399. And he's like, I've shown you how to do this.

2400. And I will enable you to do this.

  2401. I've come this way.

  2402. He's gone before us.

2403. And by his grace, like we can follow exactly where he leads.

2404. Because of what he has done, we don't have to be slaves to sin any longer.

2405. We have a new master in the world to Christ and not sin.

2406. So know that Christ has been there.

2407. He can sympathize with whatever you're going through.

  2408. He's not indifferent.

2409. But he can show you how to overcome the sin that is constantly entangling you in your Christian life.

  2410. So that's where we're going.

2411. We're going to be talking about a lot of different things.

  2412. About overcoming sin.

2413. The enemies that we have to face.

2414. As well as like the weapons that we have at our disposal as believers to overcome sin.

2415. So I pray that that will not work in our hearts.

2416. I can't wait to get into it even for myself just to study more on it.

2417. So let's just pray and kind of respond just from the time of singing together.

2418. Father, if you had given us what we deserved, we would have perished and spent eternity in a dreadful state.

  2419. Separated from you.

2420. Facing your wrath and your judgment with you.

2421. You sent Christ on our behalf.

2422. You died on our behalf.

  2423. He was our substitute.

2424. And he bore your full wrath.

2425. All of us who come to him and trust in him.

2426. To save us from your judgment.

  2427. We can come freely.

  2428. Come by your grace.

2429. You did this not because we deserved it.

  2430. You loved us.

2431. And you sent Christ on our behalf.

2432. Lord, I pray that we would, if they don't know you, unite.

2433. You would work in the hearts of those people here.

2434. And show them their sin.

  2435. Show them the cross.

2436. And let them not rest.

  2437. That's a question unsettled.

2438. Father, if we do, I pray that we would just realize that we don't need to win victory.

2439. We just need to embrace the victory we already have in you.

  2440. The victory is secured.

2441. We don't have to just, the work is done.

2442. We don't have to do it again.

2443. So help us to walk in the freedom, the joy, the peace, the liberty that you intended for us.

2444. And we don't have to sin anymore.

2445. And Lord, though we do, and though we can mess up, and we can commit things that grieve you greatly,

2446. we have an advocate with you, Jesus Christ, the righteous.

2447. And we are secure so we can press forward with confidence and approach your throne.

2448. He's been there before us.

2449. He suffered, and you've suffered even to a greater extremity.

  2450. He overcame it, Lord.

2451. Now he shows us the way.

2452. He's called, in your word, our elder brother.

2453. He shows us what to do.

  2454. He's our example.

2455. Help us just to fix our eyes on him and give us the grace to follow him.

2456. I pray you would just use this series we're about to get into.

2457. Use your word to give us the victory in our life over sin.

2458. All to your glory, Lord.

  2459. In Christ's name.

  2460. Amen.
