  1. We're going to continue our series on sin and temptation tonight.

  2. And that was kind of like more of an intro text, what Ashley just read.

  3. ! We'll probably be revisiting that next week, but I think it's really good.

  4. Tonight we're going to talk about the world and what the world is.

  5. Last week John spoke on Satan, the identity of Satan and his purposes and his desires.

  6. And this week we're going to talk about the world.

  7. And in 1 John here, the verses we just read, the word for world,

  8. it's not talking about the world in terms of like nature, creation, people necessarily.

  9. It's talking about the world more like a negative way.

  10. The way that the world is alienated from God because of its sin and because of the sinfulness of man.

  11. And it has to do with the way of thinking, like an ideology.

  12. It encompasses false systems of religion, false ways of thinking.

  13. It encompasses a lot of different things.

  14. And flip over to Colossians 2 really fast.

  15. This is just another text to look at.

  16. But the world and the devil and the flesh are the three things that we have to do with and fight against here in this life as believers.

  17. And they're not necessarily separated.

  18. As I said a long time ago, they kind of work together in a lot of ways.

  19. It wasn't like today.

  20. It was the devil.

  21. And yet tomorrow is going to be the world.

  22. It's all kind of in working together simultaneously to lead us away from God into sin.

  23. Colossians 2 verse 8.

    Colossians 2:8

  24. A great verse to kind of reference when we're looking at what it means.

  25. Like the world, the cosmos.

  26. It says,

  27. See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit.

  28. According to human tradition.

  29. According to the elementary spirits of the world.

  30. And not according to Christ.

  31. And that word for captive means like robbing, plundering, taking away, taking away from.

  32. And false ideologies and false ways of thinking, false worldviews can rob you of the joy that you're meant to have as a believer in Christ.

  33. And knowing Christ and walking with Christ, it alters how you think.

  34. And if you do that, if you bind to another ideology of the world, you can miss out on so many things that Christ has for you.

  35. And living in sin.

  36. And so, when it talks about philosophy here in Colossians, it's not just talking about like an academic class of philosophy.

  37. It encompassed a lot more back then.

  38. More of like how you do life.

  39. The purpose of life.

  40. Who God was.

  41. How you lived every day.

  42. That's what philosophy really meant more then than like we would think of today.

  43. Our main text, though, is going to be in the book of Daniel.

  44. So, turn to Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  45. I don't know many other books to look at that speak about how to be in the world, but not of it.

  46. To be the people of God, but at the same time live in the midst of a very sinful and broken and fallen environment than Daniel.

  47. Some of us are just familiar with like Daniel's in the lion den, but you ought to go back and study this book at some point.

  48. And really, ring it out.

  49. It's so rich and powerful.

  50. So, I'll give you a background.

  51. We're going to be in chapter 1.

  52. We're going to go through the first few verses.

  53. We'll read through.

  54. Right now, we'll read 1 and 2.

  55. It says,

  56. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

  57. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand with some vessels in the house of God.

  58. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his God, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his God.

  59. And to know what's going on a little bit, Judah, do you remember like there was at one point a united kingdom where David reigned as a king and there was this one nation.

  60. And then his son Solomon reigned after that and it was one nation.

  61. After Solomon died, the kingdom split apart.

  62. There was ten tribes that went to the north and that was Israel.

  63. And their capital was Samaria.

  64. And in the south, there was two, and that was Judah.

  65. And their capital was Jerusalem.

  66. The northern kingdom had been wiped out by the Assyrians before the Babylonians were kind of on the scene.

  67. So Judah remained.

  68. But Judah continued to rebel against God and not honor God in the way that they worshipped and with their lives.

  69. They confessed Him with their mouths, but their hearts were far from Him.

  70. And God constantly sent prophets.

  71. He sent Jeremiah.

  72. He sent many other prophets to speak to them and say, this is not good.

  73. You're rebelling against God.

  74. You need to repent and turn back to God.

  75. And they continued on in their sin.

  76. They ignored all God's warnings.

  77. And finally, God gave them over.

  78. He judged them for their rebellion.

  79. And His instrument of judgment was Babylon.

  80. It was Nebuchadnezzar.

  81. And this is around like 605 B.C., so a very long time ago.

  82. So you can go and read about Nebuchadnezzar, even just other literature outside the Bible.

  83. But he was a real guy.

  84. And he took Jerusalem over, conquered the city, and took a lot of the things that were in the temple back to lay before one of his false gods, one of his idols, to kind of just say, you know, look what my God did.

  85. And to mock the God of Israel.

  86. And so God was judging them for their rebellion.

  87. And just to know, like, also kind of what's going on in these first few verses, we'll read the next part right here.

  88. And it says, the king assigned them a daily portion.

  89. Oh, excuse me.

  90. Let's give something I did.

  91. I apologize.

  92. No.

  93. Yeah.

  94. Okay.

  95. Yeah.

  96. In verse 3, we begin to kind of see, like, this system that Nebuchadnezzar had in place.

  97. It wasn't just, let's just wipe them out and kill them all.

  98. Let's absorb their culture into the Babylonian culture.

  99. I can't tell you, like, how many ancient cultures I've heard about or read about that existed.

  100. And they once were kind of like a proud and powerful people.

  101. But at a certain point, they were conquered and they were completely absorbed into a stronger country.

  102. Their language was lost.

  103. Everything was disappeared, in essence.

  104. So, it's very crazy in America, in and of itself, that Israel is even there today.

  105. It's nuts.

  106. To see, like, it only has to do with God's grace and God's power that's preserved them.

  107. Because he has a plan to do some things at that point.

  108. And it says in verse 3, excuse me, yeah, yeah, verse 3.

  109. The king commanded Athanas, the chief eunuch, to bring some people of Israel, both from the royal family and the nobility,

  110. use without blemish and good in appearance, and skill in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding, learning,

  111. competent to stand in the king's palace and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.

  112. The king assigned them a daily portion of food that the king ate and wine that he drank.

  113. They were educated for three years.

  114. At the end of that time, they were to stand before the king.

  115. And among them, among these were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah.

  116. And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names.

  117. Daniel, he called Belshazzar.

  118. Hananiah, he called Shadrach.

  119. Mishael, he called Meshach.

  120. And Azariah, he called Abednego.

  121. So that's going to be kind of our text.

  122. But again, like I said, Daniel is the perfect story to see what it's like to belong to God

  123. and to have a living, walking faith in the living God, but to live in a totally fallen and hostile environment.

  124. So we're going to look at a few things first.

  125. But first of all, it's important to have three points.

  126. But first, it's important for you to know what Babylon is.

  127. And it's not just like an ancient city.

  128. A lot of the guys who have gone to war in Iraq, they can go and actually see a lot of the old ruins of Babylon

  129. and the palaces that are there.

  130. It is a location, but it implies a lot more than a location.

  131. Some of you might remember a little Bible quiz here.

  132. Way back in Genesis, a long time ago, in chapter 11,

  133. God had commanded the people to go and scatter and fill the earth and subdue the earth,

  134. and they refused.

  135. And instead, they built these massive towers to basically glorify themselves

  136. and show the power of their ingenuity.

  137. And they actually say, let us make a name for ourselves.

  138. A name for ourselves.

  139. So in a way, they were trying to show the glory of who man was.

  140. And God, remember, He scattered them.

  141. At that point, the world had one language.

  142. And He scattered them, and He confused their languages, and they couldn't work together.

  143. So that was called the Tower of Babylon.

  144. And that's where we get Babylon from.

  145. And it means like to confuse or to mix or to mingle.

  146. And Babylon symbolizes humanity's ambition to dethrone God

  147. and make their own name rather than to glorify God's name.

  148. It's basically like a worldly city where man tries to exalt himself in the position of God.

  149. So that's what it is.

  150. It's a way of thinking.

  151. It's an idea.

  152. It's not just a location.

  153. It's a location.

  154. It's saying, I'm not going to live for God.

  155. I'm going to live for myself.

  156. I'm going to make a name for myself.

  157. And so here's some of the points I have for you.

  158. The first one, and my goal here is to kind of expose kind of a process of the world around us,

  159. the fallen world, will try to put you through and expose you to as a believer.

  160. And this is going to be a two-part thing.

  161. I'll probably finish this next week.

  162. This week, I'm going to try to focus more on your identity as a child of God.

  163. Next week, it will be a little more, I don't want to say practical,

  164. but it will be like things like media or music, the kind of stuff that we are around all day,

  165. that kind of stuff, and how it's influencing us.

  166. But this is more about our identity as the people of God.

  167. So the first point is, the world will try to befriend you.

  168. The world will try to befriend you.

  169. Look at verse 5.

  170. It says,

  171. The king assigned them a daily portion of food that the king ate and wine that he drank,

  172. and they were to be educated for three years.

  173. At the end of that time, they were to stand before the king.

  174. Okay?

  175. So this was a way of like indoctrinating these guys.

  176. And notice that, whether you know it or not, you've been indoctrinated your entire life.

  177. Like from, you know, when you started going to school,

  178. and the environment you were in, you were told what was important,

  179. you were told what to live for, have a good job, you know, get married,

  180. make a lot of money, be secure, provide.

  181. That's what your goal in life is.

  182. And you're told that at a very early age.

  183. And that's what you kind of go along hearing.

  184. And some of you are even still hearing that today.

  185. So, in this text, Daniel and his friends are offered very rich food

  186. and all the privileges of being in like a Babylonian court, status, comfort.

  187. And their hope is that they can indoctrinate them

  188. and kind of wean them off of their way of like belonging to the true God

  189. and make them actually think and act like Babylonians

  190. and basically just kind of absorb them.

  191. And so, they, we might ask like a lot of nutritionists out there

  192. who try to like argue, well, with Daniel and his friends,

  193. they didn't eat the king's food and drink his wine

  194. and that's an argument for being a vegetarian or something.

  195. And I'm like, what?

  196. That has nothing to do with that really.

  197. But in the text, you should know just like what's going on

  198. when it talks about the food.

  199. Because it kind of is a, they're making a pretty bold statement

  200. when they refuse to partake of this food.

  201. To indulge in the food would be to like honor pagan gods

  202. because this food was dedicated to the gods of Babylon.

  203. And for them to eat of it would be like a way of honoring them

  204. in an Eastern, you know, ancient Near Eastern culture

  205. and then there today as well.

  206. To share a meal with somebody is almost to make a covenant with them,

  207. like to befriend them.

  208. Say like, okay, we're cool.

  209. Let's share a meal together.

  210. And so, they were like, we're not going to do that.

  211. It's symbolic.

  212. So, they refused to do that.

  213. And so, I've been trying to really think about the best way to approach this.

  214. And I had a book, I don't know if I brought it up here with me,

  215. but I don't really need it.

  216. It's a book that I read a long time ago when I was in school.

  217. It was called The Paradox of American Power.

  218. And it was written by a Harvard professor called Joseph Nye.

  219. He wrote several books dealing with like diplomacy

  220. and international politics and war.

  221. And he was the former, I mean, in case you just think of just some other wacky dude out there,

  222. he had some pretty crazy experience.

  223. He was the former chairman of National Intelligence Council,

  224. assistant secretary of defense during the Clinton administration.

  225. So, he knows a pretty good bit about foreign policy and diplomacy.

  226. And in this book, he talked about two kinds of power that nations or states or political leaders try to use

  227. when they want to go into another country and move that country towards something,

  228. just like we've done with a lot of the places throughout history,

  229. recently, Afghanistan, Iraq.

  230. So, the two kinds of power are these, and these are helpful to know.

  231. We're going to make a spiritual connection to these.

  232. The first one is called soft power.

  233. Soft power.

  234. It means the ability to obtain what you want through attraction,

  235. by use of your values, your cultures, your policies.

  236. And you go and you try to influence the way they think about things.

  237. You teach them about democracy, that kind of stuff.

  238. And then another kind of power is called hard power.

  239. And that has to do with, like, obtaining what you want through military might,

  240. you know, air, land, sea, type things.

  241. And you, through a coercion, you try to bend them to your will through force.

  242. So, soft power and hard power.

  243. An example is like, you know, America goes into a country somewhere,

  244. and they want to establish it and secure it and make it a democratic state.

  245. That's kind of like their goal.

  246. So, soft power would be like, we come there, we try to educate them,

  247. we give them our entertainment, our movies, our music, our clothes,

  248. and try to show them, you know, what things are like,

  249. and kind of like begin to change their way of thinking.

  250. And, on the other hand, hard power would be what?

  251. It would be like military force, like we've done in a lot of places.

  252. And usually, a political force uses both of those, both hard power and soft power,

  253. to accomplish that.

  254. Two so-called successes would be South Korea and Japan,

  255. whether or not they're really successes.

  256. But they look very Western now as compared to what they did a long time ago.

  257. And Vietnam, not so much.

  258. So, we see where both were used there, and it failed.

  259. So, hard power and soft power is a good way to think about things we relate to the world

  260. and spiritual warfare.

  261. But a spiritual application of this is that Satan is using the world system

  262. of like a Babylonian way of thinking.

  263. He's using both hard power and soft power in the world,

  264. and he's using them both against the church.

  265. So, he really employs hard power.

  266. You could tie that in with like persecution, hostility.

  267. Nations like North Korea or China or Sudan,

  268. where believers are beaten, imprisoned, killed, exiled.

  269. That would be, you know, hard power.

  270. Nigeria, places like that.

  271. People are facing physical persecution and death.

  272. That's the end there.

  273. But, let's see.

  274. What's a lot scarier here is that Satan hasn't chosen to apply that power here at all.

  275. He's chosen something a lot more subtle.

  276. He's chosen to use a soft power approach with us here in America.

  277. And what is his scheme and what is his goal?

  278. How does he apply this?

  279. Let me read you a quote by Charles Spurgeon.

  280. He said,

  281. Prosperity is much harder to bear than adversity.

  282. As the finding pot to silver and the furnace to gold,

  283. so is prosperity to a Christian.

  284. Many a man will pass through trouble and praise God under it.

  285. When he who has tried with no trouble will forget his God,

  286. decline in grace, and grow almost a worldly.

  287. Believe me, there is no greater trial than no trial.

  288. And that's really profound.

  289. I know that to be true.

  290. Think about it.

  291. Like, the wealth and prosperity in America,

  292. that's certainly not a bad thing.

  293. Remember?

  294. Like, those things are not called good or evil.

  295. That's how we use them.

  296. And our fallen natures like to use those things

  297. to indulge in our own simple pleasures,

  298. to use them for evil and not good.

  299. And so the enemy has, like, lulled us to sleep in our prosperity.

  300. We've fallen asleep in our liberty.

  301. Think about it.

  302. Which one would you rather have?

  303. Someone's like,

  304. I definitely don't want persecution.

  305. Please don't send that my way.

  306. I'm pretty comfortable where I am.

  307. But if you want a closer walk with God,

  308. a lot of times,

  309. like I would think,

  310. if you come to me with, like, a sword or a dagger or a pistol,

  311. I'm going to run, like, straight to Christ.

  312. You know, I'm going to, like, cling to Him.

  313. He's going to love me, protect me, give me peace.

  314. Even if I die, I'll die, like, holding on to Him.

  315. And, but, if you came up to me and, like,

  316. offered me on a platter everything that I could possibly want,

  317. everything that my flesh would enjoy,

  318. I might pause and think about it like,

  319. hmm, you know, that looks really good.

  320. So it's very, very, very subtle.

  321. So it's the things of the world,

  322. a Babylonian way of thinking,

  323. like, to help us forget about living for God

  324. and then forget about our identity as the people of God

  325. and live for ourselves and indulge in ourselves

  326. and build our own kingdoms

  327. and build up our own names rather than God's.

  328. So, the Babylonian way of the world

  329. will try to lure you in

  330. and get you to do that.

  331. Turn to James 4 real fast.

  332. We're constantly bombarded by a message

  333. that says that Christ is not enough.

  334. We have to have Christ plus all this stuff to be happy.

  335. Turn to James 4, verse 4.

    James 4:4

  336. Remember, part of the tactic is

  337. the world wants to befriend you,

  338. just like we see in our story here.

  339. James 4, verse 4.

    James 4:4

  340. James is telling them how it is.

  341. He says,

  342. You adulterous people,

  343. do you not know that friendship with the world

  344. is enmity with God?

  345. Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world

  346. makes himself an enemy of God.

  347. James was written a very long time

  348. after Daniel and his buddies were in Babylon.

  349. But they knew this.

  350. They understood this truth.

  351. But hundreds of years before James wrote that,

  352. so what did I say?

  353. No.

  354. We won't compromise.

  355. We will not give in to this.

  356. We're not going to worship your gods.

  357. We're going to remain who we are.

  358. So, if you remember,

  359. eventually,

  360. they bargained with the king,

  361. verses later,

  362. and say,

  363. give us vegetables

  364. and all that kind of stuff,

  365. and we'll see who does better

  366. and performs better,

  367. and they actually do.

  368. So, the king is cool with that.

  369. So,

  370. we are the people of the living God,

  371. and we can't be friends with the world.

  372. The world is not

  373. really wanting to be your friend.

  374. It's wanting to lure you in

  375. and destroy you.

  376. So,

  377. that's the first point,

  378. is the world will try to befriend you.

  379. Secondly,

  380. second point is,

  381. the world will try to tell you

  382. what is important.

  383. And you need to kind of hold your hand in Daniel,

  384. so go back to Daniel,

  385. and just kind of keep your hand there.

  386. We're going to flip back and forth there

  387. throughout the night.

  388. But,

  389. back in Daniel.

  390. So,

  391. the world will try to tell you

  392. what is important.

  393. It said,

  394. the king commanded

  395. Athanas,

  396. the chief eunuch,

  397. to bring some of the people of Israel,

  398. both of the royal family

  399. and the nobility,

  400. used without blemish,

  401. of good appearance

  402. and skillful and all wisdom,

  403. endowed with knowledge,

  404. understanding,

  405. and learning,

  406. and competent to stand in the king's palace,

  407. and to teach them the literature

  408. and language of the Chaldeans.

  409. So,

  410. they only got the very best.

  411. They got these

  412. really young,

  413. strong,

  414. educated,

  415. part of the nobility of Judah

  416. to come and be in the court,

  417. and in hopes of,

  418. like,

  419. changing their worldview

  420. and absorbing them

  421. into a Babylonian

  422. way of thinking

  423. by teaching them the literature

  424. and the language

  425. of the Chaldeans.

  426. So,

  427. what's kind of,

  428. what can you learn here

  429. about the Babylonian way

  430. of thinking,

  431. as opposed to what

  432. the people of God

  433. should live for

  434. and think?

  435. And it is this,

  436. and it's so true.

  437. Satan in the world

  438. will tell you

  439. that your beauty,

  440. your youth,

  441. and your intelligence

  442. are the most important things

  443. to live for.

  444. And,

  445. that's why you see

  446. all these people

  447. on TV

  448. just trying to,

  449. like,

  450. extend,

  451. you know,

  452. trying to live it up

  453. like they were

  454. their teens

  455. and,

  456. you know,

  457. young adult life

  458. when they're 50 and 60.

  459. the world

  460. will tell you

  461. that youth,

  462. beauty,

  463. and intelligence

  464. are the most important things.

  465. And that's what you should

  466. vigorously devote

  467. your life in,

  468. to being in those things.

  469. That's what the world

  470. will teach you.

  471. You should pursue

  472. those things.

  473. So many of you

  474. are stressed out,

  475. depressed,

  476. and lonely

  477. because you're trying

  478. to prove yourself

  479. to others

  480. and to yourself

  481. as well.

  482. And so many of you

  483. have bought into

  484. that lie.

  485. And,

  486. the more and more

  487. you can think

  488. with a different worldview

  489. that this is not

  490. who I am.

  491. I'm not to live this way.

  492. These are not

  493. the things that are important.

  494. Youth,

  495. beauty,

  496. and intelligence

  497. are all going to fade.

  498. Every one of you

  499. pretty girls in here,

  500. you know,

  501. you might not look so

  502. pretty when you turn 80.

  503. You know,

  504. and eventually when you die,

  505. you're definitely

  506. not going to be looking pretty.

  507. Okay?

  508. If something can be

  509. taken away from you,

  510. it's not worth living for.

  511. That's what I tell people

  512. all the time.

  513. If it can,

  514. it's not worth it.

  515. If you can,

  516. but if you can be

  517. in a prison

  518. and be beaten

  519. and tormented

  520. and even killed,

  521. they can't take Christ

  522. away from you.

  523. That's like worth living for.

  524. Christ is,

  525. is the only valuable thing

  526. that will last.

  527. And it can't be

  528. taken away from you.

  529. And He won't leave you.

  530. He won't let go of you either.

  531. So,

  532. your youth,

  533. beauty,

  534. and intelligence

  535. are not

  536. the most important thing.

  537. So,

  538. what I'm going to do here,

  539. right now,

  540. I'm trying to be careful

  541. in my language.

  542. I'm trying to

  543. just show you

  544. that I care,

  545. that I'm not just trying

  546. to deliver a sermon.

  547. It's the kind of talks

  548. that I have to tell

  549. people every day,

  550. occasionally

  551. share with a girl,

  552. and I have to

  553. preach this to myself

  554. every day.

  555. but,

  556. I'm going to address

  557. this girls and guys

  558. separately.

  559. But first,

  560. I have some harsher stuff

  561. for the guys,

  562. hopefully,

  563. later.

  564. But,

  565. for girls,

  566. you need to understand,

  567. you've heard this

  568. probably many times,

  569. but I don't think

  570. a lot of you understand

  571. that your worth

  572. is not

  573. in your outward appearance

  574. at all.

  575. But the world

  576. would have you

  577. think that way.

  578. You're concerned

  579. with so many things.

  580. I talked to a girl

  581. that I'm really good

  582. friends with,

  583. and I think that she

  584. leads a lot of women

  585. here,

  586. and Christ Family,

  587. and on campus.

  588. And she told me

  589. a while back

  590. that probably eight

  591. out of ten girls

  592. really, really

  593. are self-conscious

  594. about going to wait.

  595. They're always thinking

  596. like,

  597. man,

  598. I just don't,

  599. I don't look good.

  600. I'm constantly,

  601. I constantly be

  602. dieting and exercising

  603. just to slim down.

  604. And,

  605. like,

  606. glamour and fashion,

  607. some of you spend

  608. hours in front of a mirror.

  609. Some of you

  610. spend so much money

  611. just to make yourself

  612. really pretty

  613. on the outside.

  614. Here's a journal

  615. from a girl

  616. from, like,

  617. the late

  618. 1990s.

  619. She said,

  620. this was like her

  621. goal.

  622. I will try to make

  623. myself better

  624. in any way

  625. I possibly can

  626. to help with my budget

  627. and,

  628. with my budget,

  629. making money

  630. from babysitting.

  631. I will lose weight.

  632. I'll get new lenses.

  633. I'll get a really

  634. good haircut,

  635. good makeup,

  636. new clothes,

  637. and all the accessories.

  638. That's like,

  639. kind of like a,

  640. that's what her goal

  641. was,

  642. just to,

  643. in her life,

  644. was to do that

  645. at that point.

  646. all kind of

  647. magazines

  648. for teenage girls

  649. that are indoctrinated

  650. with this stuff

  651. at an early age

  652. and they're told

  653. this is the most

  654. important things.

  655. They're told things

  656. in, like,

  657. magazines,

  658. like Teen Magazine.

  659. I've never read one,

  660. so don't think that,

  661. but,

  662. like,

  663. I've seen them around.

  664. I know they exist.

  665. And,

  666. they'll,

  667. they talk about,

  668. like,

  669. the latest fashion styles

  670. and beauty tips

  671. and the celebrity gossip,

  672. all that kind of stuff,

  673. just to,

  674. to suck you right in.

  675. And,

  676. they have these questions,

  677. like,

  678. they send into these,

  679. magazines,

  680. where they,

  681. there are things like,

  682. you know,

  683. my mom won't let me

  684. wear makeup,

  685. like all my other friends

  686. and my face

  687. looks so dull.

  688. What can I do

  689. to look more pretty?

  690. And,

  691. I'm like,

  692. oh,

  693. just,

  694. you know,

  695. wash your face

  696. and exfoliate.

  697. like,

  698. that's not going to help.

  699. Because,

  700. there's a deeper problem there.

  701. All that's revealing,

  702. I mean,

  703. you're,

  704. you're told that

  705. from a very,

  706. very early age.

  707. And,

  708. all it reveals

  709. is that

  710. so many of you

  711. are self-conscious

  712. and insecure

  713. and you feel invisible

  714. and you have to,

  715. like,

  716. make yourself visible.

  717. And,

  718. some of you

  719. are depressed

  720. and lost

  721. because you feel that way.

  722. but,

  723. I want you to,

  724. to hear this word

  725. from Proverbs 31,

  726. 30.

  727. I'll read it to you

  728. and then we'll turn

  729. to a different placement.

  730. It says,

  731. charm is deceitful

  732. and beauty is vain

  733. but a woman

  734. who fears the Lord

  735. is to be praised.

  736. That's very,

  737. very powerful.

  738. We've got to just

  739. commit that on the memory

  740. and every time,

  741. every morning,

  742. just think about that.

  743. A woman who fears the Lord,

  744. respects the Lord,

  745. knows the Lord,

  746. is to be praised.

  747. We'll turn to

  748. 1 Peter 3

  749. really fast.

  750. Some verses

  751. for you to meditate on.

  752. 1 Peter 3,

    1 Peter 3:3

  753. verse 3.

  754. It says,

  755. Do not let your adorning

  756. be external,

  757. the braiding of hair

  758. and the putting on

  759. of gold jewelry

  760. or clothing you wear,

  761. but let your adorning

  762. be the hidden person

  763. of the heart

  764. with the imperishable beauty

  765. of a gentle

  766. and quiet spirit

  767. which in God's sight

  768. is very precious.

  769. That's amazing.

  770. That's beautiful.

  771. That's something

  772. that can't be taken away

  773. from you.

  774. It's the work

  775. that God has done

  776. inside of you

  777. and He's made you

  778. who you are

  779. and you found

  780. your identity

  781. in Him.

  782. And because He says,

  783. you belong to me

  784. and I love you,

  785. you don't need to care

  786. about what any guy

  787. thinks about you

  788. at all

  789. or what anybody

  790. says about you.

  791. You're accepted

  792. in your love

  793. because of Him.

  794. I read a really

  795. tragic story

  796. about a woman

  797. in 1980

  798. named Judith Bucknell.

  799. She was like

  800. a lot of women

  801. today.

  802. She wasn't like

  803. her struggles

  804. weren't unusual.

  805. She struggled

  806. with all the stuff

  807. that most people do,

  808. getting old,

  809. getting fat,

  810. getting married,

  811. surviving,

  812. making enough money.

  813. That's the kind of stuff

  814. that she had to deal

  815. with every day.

  816. She wasn't a prostitute.

  817. She didn't sell drugs.

  818. She wasn't on welfare.

  819. So a pretty normal woman.

  820. She exercised.

  821. She wore designer clothes.

  822. Had an apartment

  823. that overlooked

  824. the San Francisco Bay.

  825. She had a lot of friends

  826. or so-called friends.

  827. She had a lot of acquaintances.

  828. And in 1980,

  829. she was 38 years old

  830. and she ended up being

  831. homicide victim

  832. number 106 in Miami.

  833. She was murdered

  834. during the summer.

  835. She was stabbed seven times

  836. and then she was

  837. strangled to death.

  838. And she kept a diary

  839. of her very,

  840. very lonely life.

  841. And this is how

  842. we know.

  843. This is what

  844. she was seeking,

  845. you know,

  846. to be loved by a man.

  847. This is what happened.

  848. She says,

  849. I'm alone

  850. and I want to share

  851. something with somebody.

  852. Where are all the men

  853. with the flowers

  854. and the champagne

  855. and the music?

  856. Where are all the men

  857. who call and ask

  858. for a genuine,

  859. actual date?

  860. Where are all the men

  861. who would like to share

  862. more than my bed,

  863. my booze,

  864. and my food?

  865. I would like to have it

  866. in my life.

  867. Once before,

  868. I pass through my life

  869. in a kind of

  870. sexual relationship

  871. which is a part

  872. of the loving relationship.

  873. I see people together

  874. and I'm so jealous

  875. and I want to throw up.

  876. What about me?

  877. What about me?

  878. What is going to,

  879. who is going to love

  880. Judy Buck now?

  881. I feel so old,

  882. unloved,

  883. unwanted,

  884. abandoned,

  885. and used up

  886. and I want to cry myself

  887. to sleep every night.

  888. That's,

  889. a lot of you,

  890. you feel that way.

  891. And,

  892. her heart died

  893. long before

  894. she was murdered.

  895. That's the,

  896. that's the truth.

  897. And that's what

  898. a continual indoctrination

  899. into the world

  900. and giving in to sin

  901. and what sin looks like,

  902. that's like what

  903. it will lead to.

  904. It leads nowhere.

  905. It leads to,

  906. to misery and death.

  907. And,

  908. you need to be told

  909. that your value

  910. is not in your outward appearance.

  911. It's,

  912. it's in the hidden

  913. portion of the heart.

  914. It says that God

  915. formed man

  916. from the,

  917. from the dust,

  918. from the earth.

  919. And he will go back to that.

  920. I will and you will.

  921. And,

  922. there's something,

  923. there's a spiritual significance

  924. in that.

  925. And it's to say

  926. that your,

  927. your,

  928. your worth

  929. and your value to God

  930. is not in your outward appearance.

  931. Because you're going to go back

  932. to the dust.

  933. It's something else.

  934. It's just who you are.

  935. It's your,

  936. your spirit inside.

  937. And here God's made you.

  938. So,

  939. don't buy into those,

  940. those lies.

  941. It's very easy to do.

  942. You're told that every day.

  943. And so guys,

  944. like the next,

  945. it's,

  946. it's,

  947. it's for us.

  948. A lot of the girls do what they do

  949. because we tell them

  950. that's what we like

  951. and that's what we expect.

  952. So I,

  953. I think the blame

  954. goes all the way back to us.

  955. It's,

  956. it's completely

  957. our,

  958. our,

  959. our issue

  960. to deal with.

  961. Some of,

  962. some of us spend

  963. hours looking in front of the mirror.

  964. They might be in the weight room

  965. and not in the glamour room.

  966. We,

  967. we watch ourselves

  968. work out.

  969. We,

  970. we like how we look.

  971. There's,

  972. there's two different kinds of guys.

  973. A lot of times

  974. there could be more,

  975. but there's one time

  976. that they're going live

  977. is just to work hard

  978. to,

  979. to stay athletic,

  980. um,

  981. to show off

  982. and,

  983. uh,

  984. to get a good job

  985. and a good looking wife

  986. and make lots and lots of money.

  987. And that's what they're indoctrinated with.

  988. And they,

  989. they vigorously pursue those things

  990. with everything that they are.

  991. And their,

  992. their ego is to conquer the world

  993. and conquer women

  994. and their power hungry

  995. and they're bent on making a name

  996. for themselves.

  997. So,

  998. God despises that.

  999. He hates that.

1000. And if you keep going that way,

  1001. um,

  1002. it's going to end

  1003. in your eternal ruin.

  1004. Uh,

  1005. your,

1006. your kingdom is made of sand

1007. and your glory is fading

  1008. very,

  1009. very fast.

  1010. Um,

  1011. I'm only 29.

  1012. I already feel like,

  1013. man,

1014. I can't do nothing like I used to do.

  1015. No,

1016. I know Nathan feels it

1017. and a lot of us

1018. who are a little older than you guys

  1019. are already,

  1020. are already feeling it.

  1021. We're not even

  1022. have gray hairs yet

  1023. and we're feeling it.

  1024. So,

  1025. those kind of guys,

  1026. you should know,

  1027. like,

1028. women are not like toys

  1029. for your amusement.

  1030. They're,

  1031. they're beautiful.

  1032. They're actual people

1033. and they're creating the image of God

  1034. and you're to,

  1035. to love them

  1036. and honor them

  1037. and protect them

1038. and not to use them

  1039. for your own entertainment

  1040. and amusement.

  1041. Um,

  1042. it really

  1043. is aggravating

  1044. and

  1045. I have a hard time

1046. dealing with guys like that

  1047. and I have a hard time

  1048. loving guys like that.

  1049. Um,

  1050. that's probably like

1051. the hardest time for me

  1052. to sit down

  1053. and actually share

  1054. the gospel with.

  1055. And,

  1056. um,

  1057. turn to this,

  1058. Jeremiah 9,

  1059. a verse,

1060. a verse for you guys

1061. and for everybody else too,

  1062. but,

  1063. uh,

  1064. Jeremiah chapter 9,

    Jeremiah 9 chapter mention

  1065. go to verse 23.

  1066. So,

  1067. what is,

  1068. so what is,

  1069. what is God,

  1070. what does He value

  1071. in a man?

  1072. Jeremiah 9,

    Jeremiah 9:23

  1073. verse 23.

  1074. It says this,

  1075. Thus says the Lord,

1076. Let not the wise man

  1077. boast in his wisdom,

1078. let not the mighty man

  1079. boast in his might,

1080. let not the rich man

  1081. boast in his riches,

1082. but let him who boasts

  1083. boast in this,

  1084. that he understands

  1085. and knows me,

1086. that I am the Lord

  1087. who practices

  1088. steadfast love,

  1089. justice,

  1090. and righteousness

  1091. in the earth.

  1092. From these things

  1093. I delight,

  1094. declares the Lord.

  1095. So,

1096. a man who knows God,

1097. a man who fears God,

  1098. loves God,

  1099. walks with God,

  1100. and wants to live

  1101. and die for God.

  1102. That is what

  1103. a man is.

  1104. So,

  1105. that,

  1106. that one power-hungry,

  1107. egotistical man,

  1108. there's another kind of

1109. a breed that really develops,

  1110. particularly like in an

  1111. amusement-centered culture,

  1112. is the lazy

  1113. and apathetic man

  1114. who,

  1115. his goal is just

  1116. to abuse himself

  1117. to death.

  1118. To always have,

  1119. he's the guy

  1120. who spends hours

  1121. sitting in front of

  1122. Xbox,

  1123. watching TV all day.

  1124. That's his goal,

  1125. just to get home

  1126. and do that.

1127. To get my stuff done,

  1128. just isolate myself.

  1129. And,

  1130. I don't want

  1131. problem with nobody,

1132. I just want to chill

  1133. and just be relaxed

1134. for the rest of my life.

  1135. And,

  1136. those guys,

  1137. you should know

  1138. that men

1139. were not made for that.

  1140. You weren't made

  1141. for laziness

1142. and sitting on your butt

  1143. all day.

  1144. Men were made

  1145. to work,

  1146. fight,

  1147. labor,

  1148. and conquer

  1149. for God

  1150. and his kingdom.

  1151. To go out

1152. and to live for him

1153. and to share the gospel

1154. and to lead others to him,

  1155. to serve him

1156. for the glory of God.

  1157. Another verse

  1158. I'll read to you

1159. if you don't have to turn there.

  1160. It's worth going back

  1161. and reading.

  1162. It's in 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 10 chapter mention

  1163. chapter 10.

  1164. And in this text,

  1165. David is starting

  1166. to be surrounded

  1167. with a lot

  1168. of different enemies

  1169. and he sends

  1170. his main dude,

  1171. Joab,

  1172. who is a pretty

  1173. awesome dude.

  1174. He's a warrior

1175. if there ever was one.

  1176. And he took some

  1177. pretty beastly guys

  1178. with him

  1179. and they went

  1180. to the battlefield

  1181. and they were surrounded

  1182. on both sides.

  1183. And Joab

  1184. told him,

  1185. his buddy,

  1186. he said,

  1187. you take some men

1188. and go fight those guys.

  1189. I'll take some men

1190. and go fight those guys.

1191. And if you need help,

  1192. I'll come help you.

1193. And if I need help,

  1194. you come help me.

1195. And this was his line.

  1196. And I say this

  1197. because this should be

  1198. our mentality

1199. for the kingdom of God.

  1200. Very awesome verse.

1201. I think people should memorize.

  1202. Guys should memorize.

1203. They knew what they should do

  1204. and they trusted

1205. in the sovereignty of God

1206. and they just went right at it.

1207. This is what he said.

1208. And this is what he told

  1209. his guys.

  1210. He said,

  1211. Be of good courage

1212. and let us be courageous

  1213. for our people

1214. and the cities of our God.

1215. And may the Lord do

1216. what seems good to him.

1217. That was kind of like

  1218. his thing.

  1219. Let's go

  1220. and let's go

  1221. and let's do battle

  1222. for our people

1223. and the cities of our God.

1224. That's what we are made for.

1225. We are made to live,

  1226. to work,

  1227. to conquer

  1228. and live for

  1229. the kingdom of God.

  1230. Not to waste hours

  1231. sitting on our butts

  1232. watching television

  1233. and playing Xbox.

  1234. So there's

  1235. two different kinds

  1236. of guys there

1237. in a lot of ways.

  1238. I'm sure there's others,

  1239. but there are two

  1240. that I see a lot.

  1241. And

  1242. which leads us

  1243. to our third point.

  1244. We'll deal with

  1245. some more of that

  1246. other stuff later

  1247. about how the world

  1248. tries to

  1249. indoctrinate you

  1250. and tell you

  1251. what's important.

  1252. Number three,

  1253. the world will try

  1254. to make you

  1255. forget

  1256. who you are.

  1257. The world will try

  1258. to make you

  1259. forget

  1260. who you are.

  1261. And I'll go back

  1262. to Daniel.

  1263. Daniel,

  1264. I'm going to look

  1265. at verse

  1266. six and seven here.

  1267. It says,

  1268. Among these

  1269. were Daniel,

  1270. Hananiah,

  1271. Mishael,

  1272. and Azariah

  1273. of the tribe

  1274. of Judah.

  1275. And the chief

  1276. of the eunuchs

  1277. gave them names.

  1278. Daniel,

  1279. he called

  1280. Belshazzar.

  1281. Hananiah,

  1282. he called

  1283. Shadrach.

  1284. Mishael,

  1285. he called

  1286. Meshach.

  1287. And Azariah,

  1288. he called

  1289. Abednego.

  1290. So this isn't

  1291. just like a

  1292. cool thing.

  1293. I don't know

  1294. any name.

  1295. You know,

  1296. we can go to

  1297. some countries,

  1298. you know,

  1299. other places

  1300. in the world,

  1301. like give me

  1302. an American name.

  1303. What an American name?

  1304. It's not like

  1305. a cool thing

  1306. like that.

  1307. This is another

  1308. way of like

  1309. indoctrinating them

  1310. and changing

  1311. the way they

  1312. thought.

  1313. Taking their

  1314. minds off of

  1315. God and who

  1316. they were as

  1317. the people of

  1318. God.

  1319. It was a way

  1320. of brainwashing

  1321. foreigners to

  1322. the ways of

  1323. Babylon.

  1324. And think about

  1325. this.

  1326. These guys

  1327. were part of

  1328. the nobility

  1329. of Judah.

  1330. They were like

  1331. the royal,

  1332. you know,

  1333. of that royal

  1334. line.

  1335. And as

  1336. people who

  1337. are saved

  1338. and who know

  1339. Christ,

  1340. we are part of

  1341. like the nobility

  1342. of Christ.

  1343. We are joint

  1344. heirs with

  1345. Christ.

  1346. We are a

  1347. part of a

  1348. spiritual,

  1349. far greater

  1350. nobility than

  1351. something this

  1352. world could

  1353. offer.

  1354. And that's

  1355. who we are.

  1356. And their

  1357. names,

  1358. there's a

  1359. Hebrew name

  1360. connecting them

  1361. to the

  1362. living God,

  1363. the true

  1364. God.

  1365. And Daniel

  1366. means Yahweh

  1367. is our

  1368. judge.

  1369. Pretty

  1370. powerful.

  1371. It means

  1372. like God

  1373. will always

  1374. do what's

  1375. right at all

  1376. times.

  1377. those are

  1378. the name

  1379. he was

  1380. given means

  1381. Baal,

  1382. protect the

  1383. king,

  1384. the false

  1385. God.

  1386. He was

  1387. given that

  1388. name.

  1389. Hananiah

  1390. means Yahweh

  1391. has been

  1392. gracious to

  1393. us or

  1394. has been

  1395. good to

  1396. us.

  1397. Shadrach,

  1398. the name he

  1399. was given

  1400. was called

  1401. command of

  1402. Akut,

  1403. another

  1404. pagan

  1405. god.

  1406. Mishael,

  1407. it says,

  1408. it means

  1409. who is like

  1410. our God

  1411. or who

  1412. is equal

  1413. to God

  1414. or Yahweh.

  1415. His name

  1416. Meshach

  1417. was called

  1418. Abednego,

  1419. a servant

  1420. of Nago

  1421. who was

  1422. the god

  1423. of vegetation.

  1424. And

  1425. Azariah

  1426. means Yahweh

  1427. has helped

  1428. us.

  1429. And

  1430. so

  1431. they were

  1432. given these

  1433. new names

  1434. to basically

  1435. change who

  1436. they were

  1437. to make

  1438. them think

  1439. differently

  1440. because their

  1441. names reminded

  1442. them every

  1443. day,

  1444. like,

  1445. I belong

  1446. to the

  1447. living God.

  1448. I serve

  1449. the true

  1450. God.

  1451. I'm a son

  1452. of the

  1453. real God,

  1454. the living

  1455. God.

  1456. And so

  1457. they changed

  1458. their names.

  1459. So,

  1460. what's profound

  1461. here,

  1462. guys,

  1463. is like,

  1464. there's many,

  1465. many other

  1466. people that

  1467. are taken,

  1468. you know,

  1469. thousands

  1470. of Jews

  1471. were taken

  1472. into captivity

  1473. in Babylon.

  1474. many of

  1475. them.

  1476. And

  1477. only these

  1478. names are

  1479. the ones

  1480. recorded or

  1481. remembered

  1482. by people

  1483. that wrote

  1484. these down,

  1485. you know,

  1486. and told.

  1487. It's the ones

  1488. that Daniel

  1489. wrote later.

  1490. And

  1491. so,

  1492. it means

  1493. that they

  1494. were just

  1495. like absorbed

  1496. into the

  1497. Babylonian

  1498. culture.

  1499. They became

  1500. like Babylonians.

  1501. And

  1502. that's very,

  1503. very scary.

  1504. Years and

  1505. years later,

  1506. okay,

  1507. like hundreds

  1508. of years

  1509. later,

  1510. Cyrus conquered

  1511. Babylon.

  1512. He was from,

  1513. you know,

  1514. the Persian,

  1515. the Persian king,

  1516. the Medo-Persian

  1517. empire.

  1518. And part of

  1519. his policy

  1520. was like,

  1521. let all the

  1522. other people

  1523. go back to

  1524. their homeland.

  1525. And that's a

  1526. good way to

  1527. control them,

  1528. you know,

  1529. cooperate with

  1530. them,

  1531. give them,

  1532. you know,

  1533. back their

  1534. homeland.

  1535. As long as

  1536. they like show

  1537. homage and

  1538. give us money

  1539. and respect us

  1540. and obey our

  1541. commands,

  1542. that's cool,

  1543. but let them

  1544. go back to

  1545. their homeland.

  1546. So,

  1547. he allowed

  1548. all the Jews

  1549. to go back

  1550. to Judea

  1551. and to

  1552. Jerusalem.

  1553. And that's

  1554. where you get

  1555. the books of

  1556. like,

  1557. you know,

  1558. Esther,

  1559. Nehemiah,

  1560. Ezra,

  1561. that's where

  1562. those books

  1563. kind of come

  1564. into play.

  1565. And in

  1566. Nehemiah,

  1567. something really

  1568. crazy you

  1569. could pick up

  1570. on is that

  1571. he noticed

  1572. that a lot

  1573. of the children

  1574. that were there,

  1575. they didn't even

  1576. know the language

  1577. of Judah.

  1578. they had been

  1579. taught the

  1580. language of

  1581. all these

  1582. other nations

  1583. that were in

  1584. and they

  1585. had broken

  1586. God's law

  1587. about intermarrying

  1588. because that

  1589. was the way

  1590. of God

  1591. preserving his

  1592. identity.

  1593. It's like,

  1594. it'd be like

  1595. a believer

  1596. marrying a

  1597. non-believer

  1598. today.

  1599. And eventually,

  1600. like your kids

  1601. don't know,

  1602. like the language

  1603. of the living

  1604. God,

  1605. they speak the

  1606. worldly language

  1607. and the

  1608. language of,

  1609. you know,

  1610. building your

  1611. own kingdom,

  1612. the language of

  1613. Babylon.

  1614. And this is

  1615. what he said,

  1616. Nehemiah 1324,

  1617. he says,

  1618. half of their

  1619. children spoke

  1620. the language

  1621. of Ashdod

  1622. and they

  1623. could not

  1624. speak the

  1625. language of

  1626. Judah,

  1627. but only the

  1628. language of

  1629. each of the

  1630. people.

  1631. So,

  1632. the point

  1633. here is like,

  1634. will you

  1635. last?

  1636. And,

  1637. will you

  1638. last?

  1639. Will you

  1640. remain the

  1641. people of

  1642. God or will

  1643. you be

  1644. absorbed by

  1645. the culture

  1646. and ideology

  1647. of the

  1648. world of

  1649. the Babylonian

  1650. way of

  1651. thinking?

  1652. Fraternity

  1653. people,

  1654. sorority

  1655. people,

  1656. will you

  1657. be renamed?

  1658. Will you

  1659. take on a

  1660. new name?

  1661. Like,

  1662. yeah,

  1663. this is who

  1664. I am most

  1665. of the time.

  1666. They call me

  1667. this and

  1668. that's who I

  1669. really am.

  1670. I find my

  1671. identity in

  1672. that persona

  1673. or in that

  1674. way of

  1675. thinking,

  1676. you know.

  1677. People in

  1678. the military,

  1679. who's going

  1680. to influence

  1681. who?

  1682. You know,

  1683. a lot of

  1684. people are

  1685. going to go

  1686. there and

  1687. I'm going

  1688. to be

  1689. Jesus in

  1690. that place

  1691. and maybe

  1692. three months

  1693. later,

  1694. they're like,

  1695. man,

  1696. I made a

  1697. bad call.

  1698. They're

  1699. influencing me

  1700. far more

  1701. than I'm

  1702. influencing

  1703. them.

  1704. And years

  1705. and years

  1706. now,

  1707. when you

  1708. look into

  1709. the future

  1710. after school

  1711. and all

  1712. that,

  1713. will you be

  1714. speaking like

  1715. the language

  1716. of the people

  1717. of God

  1718. or will you

  1719. be totally

  1720. off?

  1721. The world

  1722. is that

  1723. deceptive.

  1724. It'll pull

  1725. you right in.

  1726. It's very,

  1727. very good.

  1728. It's so

  1729. subtle.

  1730. There's things

  1731. that look

  1732. good,

  1733. but they're

  1734. not God.

  1735. It's not

  1736. the blatant

  1737. things.

  1738. It's the

  1739. things that

  1740. are not

  1741. evil in

  1742. themselves

  1743. that we

  1744. turn into

  1745. evil.

  1746. So,

  1747. don't be

  1748. renamed.

  1749. Don't be

  1750. absorbed in

  1751. the Babylonian

  1752. way of

  1753. thinking.

  1754. Last text

  1755. we'll look

  1756. at,

  1757. Deuteronomy

  1758. 7.

  1759. Deuteronomy

  1760. 7.

  1761. Turn there.

  1762. And like I

  1763. said,

  1764. guys,

  1765. next week

  1766. we'll try

  1767. to look

  1768. at some

  1769. more of

  1770. the everyday

  1771. things that

  1772. we engage

  1773. in that

  1774. the world,

  1775. the system

  1776. of the

  1777. world,

  1778. and Satan

  1779. uses to

  1780. actually

  1781. change the

  1782. way we

  1783. think.

  1784. Deuteronomy

  1785. 7.

  1786. And you

  1787. should know

  1788. like in

  1789. this context

  1790. God is

  1791. speaking to

  1792. the people

  1793. of Israel

  1794. that he's

  1795. brought out

  1796. of Egypt.

  1797. But they

  1798. were God's

  1799. chosen people.

  1800. At that point

  1801. he chose

  1802. that nation

  1803. to manifest

  1804. himself to

  1805. and to

  1806. give us

  1807. commands to

  1808. not necessarily

  1809. to save

  1810. them all

  1811. because a

  1812. lot of

  1813. them

  1814. were

  1815. about

  1816. against

  1817. God

  1818. and

  1819. were

  1820. killed

  1821. but

  1822. to

  1823. manifest

  1824. himself

  1825. as

  1826. God

  1827. to

  1828. them.

  1829. And in

  1830. the same

  1831. way,

  1832. believers

  1833. are the

  1834. people of

  1835. God.

  1836. We are a

  1837. chosen race,

  1838. a royal

  1839. priesthood,

  1840. a holy

  1841. nation,

  1842. a people

  1843. for God's

  1844. own possession.

  1845. This is

  1846. who we

  1847. are.

  1848. So we

  1849. need to

  1850. understand

  1851. a lot

  1852. of it

  1853. is an

  1854. identity

  1855. thing.

  1856. We must

  1857. understand

  1858. who we

  1859. are.

  1860. You have

  1861. to be

  1862. told

  1863. every day

  1864. this is

  1865. who I

  1866. am.

  1867. I belong

  1868. to Christ.

  1869. He bought

  1870. me with

  1871. his blood.

  1872. I'm a

  1873. part of

  1874. his body.

  1875. He's my

  1876. savior.

  1877. I love

  1878. him.

  1879. I want

  1880. to follow

  1881. him and

  1882. live for

  1883. him.

  1884. This is

  1885. who I

  1886. am.

  1887. I'm a

  1888. new

  1889. creation.

  1890. The old

  1891. is gone

  1892. and the

  1893. new

  1894. has come.

  1895. You have

  1896. to think

  1897. that way

  1898. every day.

  1899. And if

  1900. you don't,

  1901. you're

  1902. going to

  1903. begin to

  1904. buy into

  1905. this thing

  1906. that your

  1907. worth and

  1908. your value

  1909. and all

  1910. that is

  1911. found in

  1912. another

  1913. place

  1914. outside of

  1915. God,

  1916. the one

  1917. who actually

  1918. listen to

  1919. this.

  1920. This is

  1921. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 7:6

  1922. 7,

  1923. verse 6

  1924. and 9.

  1925. Yeah,

  1926. verse 6

  1927. through 9.

  1928. It says,

  1929. For you

  1930. are a

  1931. people

  1932. holy to

  1933. the Lord

  1934. your God,

  1935. set aside,

  1936. you know,

  1937. set aside

  1938. for God.

  1939. The Lord

  1940. your God

  1941. has chosen

  1942. you to

  1943. be a

  1944. people for

  1945. his

  1946. treasured

  1947. possession

  1948. out of

  1949. all the

  1950. peoples who

  1951. are on

  1952. the face

  1953. of this

  1954. earth.

  1955. It is

  1956. not because

  1957. you were

  1958. more than

  1959. number than

  1960. any other

  1961. people that

  1962. the Lord

  1963. set his

  1964. love on

  1965. you and

  1966. chose you,

  1967. for you

  1968. were the

  1969. fewest of

  1970. all the

  1971. peoples.

  1972. So in

  1973. other words,

  1974. it wasn't

  1975. how cool

  1976. you are.

  1977. It wasn't

  1978. what you

  1979. could do.

  1980. It wasn't

  1981. how beautiful

  1982. you were on

  1983. the outside.

  1984. It didn't

  1985. matter.

  1986. It didn't

  1987. matter.

  1988. That's not

  1989. why God

  1990. chose to

  1991. set his

  1992. love on

  1993. you.

  1994. Verse 8,

  1995. But it

  1996. was because

  1997. the Lord

  1998. loves you

  1999. and is

  2000. keeping the

  2001. oath he

  2002. swore to

  2003. your fathers

  2004. that the

  2005. Lord has

  2006. brought you

  2007. out with a

  2008. mighty hand

  2009. and redeemed

  2010. you from the

  2011. house of

  2012. slavery and

  2013. from the

  2014. hand of

  2015. Pharaoh,

  2016. the king

  2017. of Egypt.

  2018. Know

  2019. therefore the

  2020. Lord your

  2021. God is

  2022. God,

  2023. the faithful

  2024. God who

  2025. keeps covenant

  2026. and steadfast

  2027. love with

  2028. those who

  2029. love him and

  2030. keep his

  2031. commandments to

  2032. a thousand

  2033. generations.

  2034. the Lord

  2035. has,

  2036. I mean you

  2037. should know

  2038. this as

  2039. well,

  2040. like slavery

  2041. in Egypt

  2042. and Moses

  2043. and Pharaoh

  2044. and all

  2045. that,

  2046. they were

  2047. types and

  2048. prefigures

  2049. of a

  2050. greater slavery

  2051. like their

  2052. bondage in

  2053. Egypt was

  2054. a picture of

  2055. a greater

  2056. slavery that

  2057. every human

  2058. has and

  2059. that's the

  2060. bondage of

  2061. sin.

  2062. We all

  2063. have that

  2064. and Pharaoh,

  2065. you know,

  2066. pretty bad

  2067. do but

  2068. nothing compared

  2069. to Satan.

  2070. So in the

  2071. same way we

  2072. were slaves,

  2073. we were

  2074. slaves,

  2075. to sin,

  2076. we were

  2077. dead in

  2078. sin,

  2079. we were

  2080. rebels

  2081. against

  2082. God,

  2083. hostile

  2084. towards

  2085. God,

  2086. God only

  2087. had wrath

  2088. focused on

  2089. us and

  2090. we were,

  2091. it says in

  2092. scripture that

  2093. we belong to

  2094. the devil.

  2095. We did his

  2096. will,

  2097. we carried out

  2098. his will

  2099. before we

  2100. were in

  2101. Christ.

  2102. And it

  2103. says that

  2104. he brought

  2105. us out

  2106. with a

  2107. mighty hand

  2108. and redeemed

  2109. us.

  2110. And he did

  2111. that through

  2112. Christ.

  2113. So he

  2114. bought us,

  2115. he delivered

  2116. us out of

  2117. slavery and

  2118. death and

  2119. gave us

  2120. himself,

  2121. gave us

  2122. Christ to

  2123. be our

  2124. all in

  2125. all and

  2126. he can't

  2127. be taken

  2128. away from

  2129. us.

  2130. And he

  2131. did this

  2132. purely out

  2133. of grace.

  2134. We did

  2135. not deserve

  2136. it,

  2137. just like we

  2138. just read

  2139. here.

  2140. Purely out

  2141. of grace.

  2142. He loves

  2143. you,

  2144. not because

  2145. you're awesome

  2146. and cool.

  2147. He loves

  2148. you just

  2149. because he

  2150. chose to

  2151. for no other

  2152. reason.

  2153. Because it

  2154. brought him

  2155. favor and it

  2156. glorified him

  2157. to love

  2158. something that

  2159. was so

  2160. unlovable.

  2161. And it's

  2162. not that

  2163. God just

  2164. is love

  2165. or has

  2166. love or

  2167. is loving.

  2168. It means

  2169. that he is

  2170. in his very

  2171. nature,

  2172. he's love.

  2173. He defines

  2174. love.

  2175. So therefore

  2176. he is loving.

  2177. It comes

  2178. out of who

  2179. he is.

  2180. And the

  2181. Lord saved

  2182. us and

  2183. called us

  2184. his people.

  2185. And we're

  2186. to live for

  2187. him.

  2188. We're not

  2189. to be

  2190. absorbed into

  2191. the culture

  2192. and way of

  2193. thinking of

  2194. Babylon in

  2195. this world.

  2196. And it's

  2197. going to be

  2198. an everyday

  2199. fight.

  2200. It's not

  2201. going to be

  2202. over until

  2203. Christ comes

  2204. back and

  2205. cleans house.

  2206. So we

  2207. need each

  2208. other.

  2209. We need to

  2210. be reminded

  2211. of these

  2212. truths.

  2213. So next

  2214. week we're

  2215. going to

  2216. talk more

  2217. on the

  2218. things that

  2219. surround us

  2220. every day

  2221. and try to

  2222. prepare a

  2223. difficult thing.

  2224. Pray for me

  2225. and John as

  2226. well as we

  2227. kind of tread

  2228. this line

  2229. between law

  2230. and grace.

  2231. You know,

  2232. like we can't

  2233. be like,

  2234. hey, stop

  2235. doing that.

  2236. Stop doing

  2237. that.

  2238. Stop it.

  2239. That's not

  2240. the point.

  2241. There's some

  2242. things that

  2243. can be used

  2244. for the glory

  2245. of God and

  2246. we need to

  2247. be aware of

  2248. those things.

  2249. And some

  2250. things we

  2251. should stay

  2252. just blatantly

  2253. away from.

  2254. And so

  2255. we'll talk

  2256. about some

  2257. of that next

  2258. week.

  2259. So yeah,

  2260. let's be the

  2261. people of God

  2262. and encourage

  2263. each other,

  2264. remind each

  2265. other about

  2266. who we are

  2267. every day.

  2268. And so

  2269. let's pray

  2270. and then we'll

  2271. just kind of

  2272. respond to

  2273. just the time

  2274. of singing.

  2275. And Father,

  2276. you are

  2277. worthy to be

  2278. praised.

  2279. You are

  2280. worthy to

  2281. of our lives

  2282. and our

  2283. energies,

  2284. everything we

  2285. are.

  2286. And even if

  2287. you led us

  2288. to death,

  2289. you're worth

  2290. dying for

  2291. and shown

  2292. to be

  2293. magnificent

  2294. in the way

  2295. we die.

  2296. and Father,

  2297. if we have

  2298. you,

  2299. nothing can

  2300. take you

  2301. away from

  2302. us.

  2303. You're

  2304. holding us

  2305. with your

  2306. powerful right

  2307. hand and

  2308. no one will

  2309. snatch us

  2310. out of your

  2311. hand.

  2312. And if we're

  2313. in Christ,

  2314. we cannot be

  2315. condemned.

  2316. Father,

  2317. we praise you

  2318. for not just

  2319. leaving us

  2320. in darkness

  2321. and in a

  2322. place of

  2323. misery in

  2324. the world.

  2325. But for

  2326. calling us

  2327. out and

  2328. saving us,

  2329. bringing us

  2330. into the

  2331. light and

  2332. making us

  2333. your people,

  2334. making us

  2335. your children

  2336. and delighting

  2337. in us and

  2338. giving us

  2339. new names

  2340. as your

  2341. sons and

  2342. your daughters

  2343. and help

  2344. us to be

  2345. reminded that

  2346. Lord and

  2347. the price

  2348. that it was

  2349. to bring us

  2350. to that

  2351. place,

  2352. the precious

  2353. blood of

  2354. Christ.

  2355. And he

  2356. bought us

  2357. and purchased

  2358. us with

  2359. his own

  2360. blood.

  2361. And we

  2362. are his

  2363. and we

  2364. are the

  2365. church and

  2366. we belong

  2367. to him

  2368. exclusively,

  2369. not to have

  2370. any other

  2371. lovers.

  2372. And Lord,

  2373. we are also

  2374. called to each

  2375. other and we

  2376. need each

  2377. other to

  2378. remind

  2379. ourselves of

  2380. the gospel

  2381. every day

  2382. and to

  2383. fight the

  2384. good fight

  2385. that's in

  2386. front of us.

  2387. And Lord,

  2388. help us to

  2389. remain your

  2390. people and

  2391. to live like

  2392. your people

  2393. while we

  2394. are here on

  2395. this earth

  2396. until you

  2397. come back

  2398. or you

  2399. take us

  2400. to be

  2401. with you,

  2402. to set our

  2403. minds on the

  2404. eternal and

  2405. the unseen

  2406. rather than

  2407. the seen

  2408. and the

  2409. temporal,

  2410. to be

  2411. strangers

  2412. and pilgrims

  2413. and aliens

  2414. and travelers

  2415. in this earth

  2416. and not to

  2417. become settlers.

  2418. And to

  2419. keep our

  2420. hope and

  2421. our joy

  2422. fixed on

  2423. Christ.

  2424. And Lord,

  2425. we love

  2426. you and

  2427. praise you.

  2428. Thank you

  2429. for your

  2430. word that

  2431. reveals this

  2432. truth to

  2433. us.

  2434. And may

  2435. we just

  2436. continue to

  2437. think of

  2438. these things

  2439. tonight and

  2440. in the

  2441. coming days.

  2442. In Christ's

  2443. name,

  2444. Amen.
