  1. Our text this morning is Ephesians chapter 5.

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  2. Two weeks ago I had the privilege of going to the Social Security office to get a new Social Security card.

  3. ! I walk into the office and the Federal Security guard calls me over real politely.

  4. He quietly tells me that the knife in my pocket needs to go back to my vehicle.

  5. I was shocked for a number of reasons.

  6. First, for his request.

  7. Second, that I actually had my knife in my pocket.

  8. I don't usually carry one around.

  9. And third, it's only about two inches long, so I don't know.

  10. He saw the shock on my face and he proceeded to tell me that weapons are not allowed on Federal property.

  11. If you've never been to the Social Security office, the new location in Gainesville, it's in an office building.

  12. Below it is a doctor's office.

  13. The law office next to it is a law office.

  14. So how in the world am I on Federal property?

  15. Because I'm pretty sure the law office and the doctor's office are not Federal offices.

  16. When I walked through the door into the Social Security office, I was stepping into and onto Federal grounds.

  17. That moment, I was on Federal ground.

  18. I was told by the Security guard and there was nothing I could do about it.

  19. I had to abide by his laws.

  20. In all honesty, there's probably signs posted that I didn't see.

  21. I'm sure there are signs posted.

  22. I would make an argument this morning that the same effect should occur when people come in contact with us.

  23. That when they come in contact with us, we should have signs up figuratively that people know exactly who we are, where we stand, and that we are Christians.

  24. We are adopted sons and daughters of the King.

  25. So friend or foe, enemy or acquaintance should know exactly where we stand.

  26. I'm afraid that too often our signs aren't even up.

  27. I'm afraid too often the doorways aren't marked in our lives.

  28. And there's no difference between us and the world, between Christians and the world.

  29. A couple of weeks ago, Nathan talked about six things to look for in a healthy church.

  30. One of the things he mentioned was missional church, to find a church that is missional.

  31. A church that believes that everyone, as Christians, are ministers sent into the world to build the kingdom of God for the glory of God.

  32. I would argue that living missional lives is how the signs stay out.

  33. It's how everyone knows where we stand.

  34. Our doorways are marked.

  35. And people will know exactly where they are and who they are in the presence of.

  36. I am not advocating prideful arrogance because we are adopted kings, adopted sons and daughters of the King.

  37. I'm advocating a sincere life changed by the Gospel.

  38. I would also argue that being missional is not this one thing we do.

  39. It's not this event that we put on or this outreach that we do or this particular Bible study that we study.

  40. It isn't the specific way that you talk or the clothes that you wear or the way that you choose to live a certain time.

  41. Being missional is life.

  42. It is a life that has been changed by the Gospel and is now compelled to love all.

  43. Friend and foe, neighbor and family, enemy and companion.

  44. Missional is our subject this morning.

  45. My goal is for all of us to be moved, convicted and compelled to put up a sign and make ourselves known to the world.

  46. Ephesians 5.1 is our text this morning.

  47. One verse.

  48. And it reads,

  49. Therefore, be imitators of God as beloved children.

  50. Let's pray together.

  51. Amen.

  52. Gracious Heavenly Father,

  53. hallowed be Your name.

  54. Your kingdom come.

  55. Your will be done this morning.

  56. I pray that You would speak through me.

  57. That the words that are spoken would not be my words, not my opinions, not my thoughts,

  58. but be Your words to us this morning.

  59. That we would hear Your words and we would follow Your words with obedience, whatever that requires.

  60. Repentance.

  61. A step in being a little more bold.

  62. Whatever that is, God, we would be moved by Your word this morning.

  63. The Gospel has already changed our life.

  64. It's already made us new creatures.

  65. God, I pray that it would change our actions as well.

  66. We would not hinder that from happening.

  67. We ask that You move this morning.

  68. That You would speak to our hearts.

  69. Your Holy Spirit would continue to move in this room and in our gathering.

  70. I pray this in Jesus' name.

  71. Amen.

  72. Amen.

  73. Amen.

  74. So let me define missional for you.

  75. The definition I want to use is from a book entitled Community by Brad House.

  76. He says,

  77. Missional is to participate in the mission of God as a response to the Gospel through proclamation and practice.

  78. So, participate in the mission of God as a response to the Gospel through proclamation and practice.

  79. Before we dig any deeper into the ground of missional living, we must look at the Gospel.

  80. The end of the definition says,

  81. As a response to the Gospel through proclamation and practice.

  82. A missional life lives in response to the Gospel.

  83. The life-changing act of the Father sending His Son to earth to live a sinless life.

  84. Romans 8.3

  85. For God has done what the law we can by the flesh could not do.

  86. By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin.

  87. God the Father sent His Son to earth to be sin, to bear the wrath of God for us, His body, the church.

  88. We are undeserving and in fact we did not desire Him.

  89. He showed us favor for His glory.

  90. He showed us grace.

  91. His grace.

  92. Because He is a merciful and gracious God.

  93. Now, as children of God, we sit here.

  94. We sing songs.

  95. We go to work during the week.

  96. We sit in a classroom.

  97. And because of Jesus, our standing with God is as if no sin had ever been committed.

  98. Because our sin was taken away and given to us was Jesus' righteousness.

  99. Some may say that we were neutral recipients of the grace of God.

  100. That we do good and we do bad and it just kind of evens out.

  101. The law tells us that we were actually in overdrive, driving the opposite direction of God.

  102. Running from Him as sinners in rebellion of Him.

  103. We weren't just undeserving.

  104. We were guilty and deserving of the full wrath of God.

  105. And He showed us grace by sending His Son for us.

  106. God the Father has sent His Son.

  107. And in John 20, 21, it says that Jesus then sends us.

  108. He says, as the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.

  109. Not just His apostles.

  110. Not just the disciples.

  111. But all Christians are sent.

  112. We are sent in the world, as Romans 8 tells us,

  113. as ambassadors of Jesus, as ambassadors of the Gospel.

  114. This is missional living.

  115. In response to the Gospel.

  116. From the Gospel.

  117. Out of the Gospel.

  118. Because of the Gospel.

  119. This is missional living.

  120. Ephesians 5.1 says,

  121. Therefore, be imitators of God as beloved children.

  122. I want to unpack the second part of the verse first.

  123. As beloved children.

  124. We are beloved children because of the Gospel.

  125. Romans 8.15 says,

  126. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,

  127. but you have received the spirit of adoption as sons,

  128. by whom we cry, Abba, Father.

  129. Ephesians 1.5 says,

  130. He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ.

  131. Ephesians 1.5 says,

  132. Through Jesus Christ.

  133. For what part?

  134. His entire life.

  135. Sinless.

  136. Perfect sacrifice for us.

  137. Turn to Hebrews 9.10.

  138. I'll show you something really quick,

  139. and then we'll come back to Ephesians.

  140. Hebrews 9.10.

  141. Chapter 9, verse 11.

  142. But when Christ appeared as a high priest for the good things that have come,

  143. then through the greater and more perfect tent,

  144. not made with hands,

  145. that is, not of His creation,

  146. He entered once for all into the holy places,

  147. not by means of the blood of goats and calves,

  148. but by means of His own blood,

  149. thus to securing an eternal redemption.

  150. For if the blood of goats and bulls,

  151. and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of heifer,

  152. sanctify for the purification of the flesh,

  153. how much more will the blood of Christ,

  154. who through the eternal Spirit,

  155. offered Himself without blemish to God,

  156. purify our conscience from dead works,

  157. to serve the living God.

  158. Now, what I want to show you is,

  159. in verse 12,

  160. He says He entered once for all.

  161. Once and for all.

  162. Look at verse 12.

  163. Or, I'm sorry, not verse 12.

  164. We just read that.

  165. Verse 26 in chapter 9.

  166. For then He would have had to suffer repeatedly

  167. since the foundation of the world,

  168. but as it is, He has appeared once for all.

  169. Verse 28.

  170. So Christ having been offered once

  171. to bear the sins of many.

  172. Chapter 10.

  173. Verse 10.

  174. And by that,

  175. will we have been sanctified

  176. through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ

  177. once for all.

  178. And again, in verse 12.

  179. But then Christ had offered for all time

  180. a single sacrifice for sins.

  181. You have been adopted once and for all.

  182. It is over.

  183. You're always part of the family.

  184. You will not be let go.

  185. You will not be discarded.

  186. Once and for all.

  187. It is finished.

  188. You are a child of God.

  189. And Ephesians 5.

  190. 1 says,

  191. A beloved child of God.

  192. And nothing will change that.

  193. We are children of God.

  194. And we are to imitate God

  195. as children of God.

  196. I started thinking about my kids

  197. and the imitation of me

  198. that they do.

  199. They do it.

  200. If you don't have kids yet,

  201. here you go.

  202. I've got an experiment for you.

  203. Parents, try this at home.

  204. See how long it takes.

  205. Siblings, older siblings,

  206. try this.

  207. And then when you have kids,

  208. try it.

  209. Do some goofy dance move

  210. and see how long it takes them

  211. for them to add it

  212. to their repertoire.

  213. It will happen.

  214. I've seen it.

  215. It will happen.

  216. It won't take long.

  217. Kids and children

  218. imitate their parents

  219. for the good

  220. and for the bad.

  221. Children also trust their parents

  222. and are in complete

  223. dependence of them.

  224. They're dependent

  225. for all their needs.

  226. You don't see a four-year-old

  227. shopping for groceries,

  228. but they have them.

  229. You don't see a ten-year-old

  230. shopping for insurance,

  231. but they have it.

  232. You don't see a fourteen-year-old

  233. shopping for a house,

  234. but they live in one.

  235. Guys, we are beloved children of God.

  236. We must be dependent on Him

  237. and Him alone.

  238. Children also are nurtured

  239. by their parents.

  240. The love and support they need

  241. is there from the parents.

  242. The touch and feel they need

  243. is there.

  244. Let me take a moment here.

  245. Some of you don't have parents.

  246. Some of you haven't received

  247. nurture from them

  248. in a really long time.

  249. Maybe your dad has never said,

  250. I love you.

  251. Maybe he's never hugged you.

  252. Maybe your mom has never

  253. complimented you

  254. or told you that she loves you.

  255. Maybe you never have had

  256. real parents.

  257. Be comforted.

  258. Be comforted

  259. because this verse

  260. is for you.

  261. As beloved children,

  262. He loves you

  263. and He wants to nurture you.

  264. He wants to hold you

  265. and take care of you.

  266. Your Heavenly Father

  267. can and will

  268. fill that void.

  269. Allow Him to heal you.

  270. Allow Him to be

  271. your nurturing Father.

  272. Allow Him to heal you.

  273. Let go of whatever

  274. is hindering you

  275. from that happening.

  276. Children are taken care of

  277. by their parents.

  278. and we are taken care of

  279. by our Heavenly Father

  280. as beloved children

  281. imitate God.

  282. So how do we imitate God?

  283. Without digging down deep,

  284. we know there's some things

  285. that we just can't do.

  286. We can't redeem

  287. a people.

  288. We can't forgive sins.

  289. That is where the Gospel

  290. comes into play.

  291. That is where the Gospel

  292. works.

  293. I looked at just

  294. the book of Ephesians.

  295. Just one book.

  296. And I went through

  297. and I marked

  298. what God does.

  299. If we're going to

  300. imitate Him,

  301. let's see what He does.

  302. So real quick,

  303. kind of a quick run through

  304. of Ephesians.

  305. Six chapters.

  306. In chapter 1, verse 3,

  307. God blessed us in Christ

  308. with every spiritual blessing.

  309. chapter 1, verse 4,

  310. He chose us in Him

  311. to be holy and blameless.

  312. Chapter 1, verse 5,

  313. He adopted us as sons.

  314. Verse 7,

  315. He redeemed us

  316. and He forgives us.

  317. Verse 11,

  318. He has given us

  319. an inheritance.

  320. Verse 17,

  321. He gives us a spirit

  322. of wisdom and revelation

  323. in the knowledge of Him.

  324. He makes it possible

  325. for us to know Him.

  326. In chapter 2, verse 4,

  327. He is rich in mercy.

  328. He is merciful.

  329. Also, verse 4,

  330. He has great love.

  331. Verse 13 of chapter 2,

  332. He gathers His children close.

  333. Verse 14,

  334. He is our peace.

  335. He unites.

  336. Verse 16,

  337. He is peacemaker.

  338. Verse 22,

  339. He continues to work.

  340. In chapter 3, verse 2,

  341. He is the giver of grace.

  342. Chapter 3, verse 8,

  343. He is bearer of unsearchable riches

  344. in Christ.

  345. Verse 19 of chapter 3,

  346. He has love that surpasses knowledge.

  347. Chapter 4, verse 1,

  348. He calls.

  349. Verse 7 of chapter 4,

  350. He is the giver of grace.

  351. Verse 16 of chapter 4,

  352. He is the head of the body

  353. and He makes it grow.

  354. This is what God does.

  355. Verse 21 of chapter 4,

  356. He is truth.

  357. Verse 32,

  358. He forgives.

  359. Chapter 5, verse 2,

  360. He has made a sacrifice for us.

  361. Verse 8,

  362. He is the giver of light

  363. so that we can walk in light.

  364. Chapter 5, verse 23,

  365. He is the Savior.

  366. Verse 29,

  367. He cherishes the church.

  368. Chapter 6, verse 4,

  369. He disciplines and He instructs.

  370. Verse 8,

  371. He is the giver of good.

  372. Verse 10,

  373. He is strong and mighty.

  374. Verse 24,

  375. He has an incorruptible love.

  376. Now there's 65 more books in the Bible

  377. that we should go through

  378. and figure out what God does.

  379. Because that's just one of them

  380. and it's a daunting list.

  381. How in the world can we imitate God?

  382. The answer is by being missional.

  383. In response to the Gospel.

  384. Missional.

  385. The definition is to participate

  386. in the mission of God

  387. as a response to the Gospel

  388. through proclamation and practice.

  389. See, our message,

  390. it can redeem.

  391. We can forgive because of the Gospel.

  392. We can love because of the Gospel.

  393. And when we do so,

  394. we live in response to the Gospel.

  395. So that list there that I just ran through,

  396. that's what God does.

  397. That's what God does.

  398. So then,

  399. what is His mission?

  400. In other words,

  401. why does He do those things?

  402. God's mission can be summed up by,

  403. God's mission is to be glorified

  404. by making Himself known.

  405. So how does He accomplish this?

  406. God's mission,

  407. be glorified by making Himself known.

  408. Well, He accomplishes this

  409. by sending Jesus

  410. to redeem His people,

  411. to build His clean kingdom

  412. and to glorify the Father.

  413. And then by Jesus sending us.

  414. Jesus sending us,

  415. as we read in John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  416. Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:18–20

  417. verse 18 through 20,

  418. is the Great Commission.

  419. These are our marching orders.

  420. Verse 18 of Matthew 28 says,

  421. All authority in heaven and on earth

  422. has been given to Me.

  423. Go therefore and make disciples

  424. of all nations,

  425. baptizing them in the name of the Father

  426. and of the Son

  427. and of the Holy Spirit,

  428. teaching them to observe

  429. all that I have commanded you.

  430. And behold,

  431. I am with you always

  432. to the end of the age.

  433. These are our marching orders.

  434. We are sent into the world.

  435. And this go here

  436. is in our going.

  437. Or as we go,

  438. as we walk,

  439. as we work,

  440. as we sing,

  441. as we talk,

  442. make disciples.

  443. The good news here

  444. is we see this list.

  445. We've read through that list

  446. of Ephesians

  447. of what God does.

  448. We see this Great Commission.

  449. The good news is

  450. that we don't have to do

  451. anything new.

  452. We don't have to create

  453. a new program

  454. to reach the lost.

  455. All we have to do

  456. is join God

  457. in what He's already doing.

  458. Join Him

  459. on His mission.

  460. He's already working.

  461. He's already making Himself known.

  462. We have been invited

  463. to join Him.

  464. We join God

  465. by living missional lives.

  466. By imitating Him

  467. out of the Gospel

  468. and not for the Gospel.

  469. Out of the Gospel,

  470. not for the Gospel.

  471. The definition was

  472. in response to the Gospel

  473. by proclaiming

  474. and practicing

  475. the Gospel.

  476. The church is the messenger.

  477. The universal church.

  478. Not Christ's family church.

  479. Not Church of Dahlonega.

  480. Not First Baptist of wherever.

  481. The church.

  482. The big church.

  483. Capital C.

  484. Is the messenger

  485. of salvation.

  486. Not the means

  487. of salvation.

  488. So we proclaim

  489. the message

  490. of salvation

  491. to the world.

  492. God sends us.

  493. Jesus has sent us.

  494. And we proclaim

  495. the message

  496. of salvation.

  497. In Luke chapter 4

    Luke 4:43

  498. verse 43,

  499. Jesus says,

  500. I must preach

  501. the good news

  502. of the kingdom

  503. of God

  504. to the other towns

  505. as well.

  506. For I was sent

  507. for this purpose.

  508. Jesus was sent

  509. to preach the good news.

  510. The good news

  511. about Himself.

  512. And we then

  513. are sent

  514. to preach

  515. the good news

  516. of Jesus.

  517. As John chapter 20

    John 20:21

  518. verse 21 says,

  519. As the Father

  520. has sent me,

  521. Jesus speaking,

  522. even so

  523. I am sending you.

  524. So as the Father

  525. has sent me,

  526. I then am sending

  527. you out.

  528. We are to imitate

  529. God by joining

  530. Him in His mission.

  531. By joining Him.

  532. See,

  533. missional is not

  534. this new idea.

  535. Missional is not

  536. this new buzzword,

  537. although it is

  538. a buzzword.

  539. It is a popular

  540. word to speak

  541. in Christian circles.

  542. Missional is

  543. the command

  544. of God.

  545. It is the way

  546. that we must,

  547. must,

  548. live our

  549. lives.

  550. So then,

  551. how do we live

  552. missional lives?

  553. How then do we

  554. live missional lives?

  555. First of all,

  556. by being intentional

  557. in proclaiming

  558. and practicing

  559. the Gospel.

  560. Here is why

  561. I chose

  562. the word

  563. intentional.

  564. See,

  565. we have been

  566. given a new

  567. life as Christians.

  568. But as

  569. Romans 7

  570. taught us,

  571. we still have

  572. the same

  573. corrupting

  574. thoughts

  575. and desires.

  576. And Romans 8

  577. tells us

  578. that we have,

  579. we no longer

  580. are condemned,

  581. but we still

  582. sin.

  583. So we have

  584. the sin

  585. and the corrupting

  586. thoughts and

  587. desires still

  588. in us.

  589. We're battling

  590. it in us.

  591. So missional

  592. living requires

  593. intentionality.

  594. We have to be

  595. intentional and

  596. determined

  597. to live it out.

  598. We have to make

  599. a point to be

  600. missional.

  601. have to be

  602. disciplined,

  603. to be determined

  604. and to be devoted

  605. to being

  606. missional.

  607. We have to

  608. continually remember

  609. that we are

  610. the sent ones.

  611. We are sent

  612. with a purpose.

  613. We are invited

  614. by God

  615. to join Him

  616. in what He

  617. is already

  618. doing.

  619. That He's

  620. already doing.

  621. He has

  622. invited us

  623. to join Him.

  624. This,

  625. right there,

  626. that right there

  627. should ease

  628. some of our

  629. fear and our

  630. uncertainty.

  631. We join God

  632. in what He's

  633. doing.

  634. We then

  635. imitate Him

  636. and live

  637. missional lives

  638. in response

  639. to the Gospel.

  640. So here,

  641. at Christ's

  642. Family Church,

  643. one of the ways

  644. that we are

  645. intentional is

  646. by meeting

  647. in community

  648. groups.

  649. We meet in

  650. community groups

  651. during the week.

  652. The purpose

  653. of community

  654. groups is not

  655. to have a

  656. mid-week

  657. Bible study.

  658. Even though

  659. that's good.

  660. It's not

  661. to meet

  662. together

  663. and fellowship

  664. over food.

  665. Even though

  666. that's good.

  667. It's not

  668. to meet

  669. and bear

  670. one another's

  671. burdens.

  672. Even though

  673. that's good

  674. and that

  675. happens.

  676. The main

  677. purpose

  678. of community

  679. groups is

  680. to reach

  681. the community

  682. for Jesus.

  683. To minister

  684. together

  685. to glorify

  686. God

  687. by making

  688. Him known.

  689. We have

  690. three community

  691. groups right now.

  692. We have

  693. two in

  694. Dahlonega

  695. and one

  696. down in

  697. Gainesville.

  698. We want

  699. to make

  700. the communities

  701. we are

  702. in better

  703. in response

  704. to the

  705. Gospel.

  706. We want

  707. all of

  708. Christ's

  709. family

  710. church

  711. to proclaim

  712. the Gospel

  713. and live

  714. it out.

  715. We want

  716. all of

  717. Christ's

  718. family

  719. church,

  720. every person

  721. in this

  722. room,

  723. to be part

  724. of the

  725. community

  726. group,

  727. so that

  728. we can

  729. better the

  730. community

  731. because of

  732. the Gospel

  733. and for

  734. the glory

  735. of God.

  736. We want

  737. to make

  738. an impact

  739. in our

  740. communities,

  741. not for

  742. Christ's

  743. family

  744. church,

  745. not for

  746. our name,

  747. but for

  748. His name,

  749. for His

  750. glory.

  751. Each group

  752. is praying

  753. for ministry

  754. opportunities

  755. to serve

  756. the community.

  757. We're

  758. looking for

  759. opportunities

  760. to see where

  761. God is at

  762. work,

  763. to see where

  764. we can

  765. join Him,

  766. where can

  767. we minister

  768. to people

  769. who are

  770. in need.

  771. We want

  772. to love

  773. the people

  774. of Dahlonega,

  775. love the

  776. people of

  777. Gainesville,

  778. and

  779. surrounding

  780. areas of

  781. those

  782. to make

  783. God

  784. known.

  785. Big

  786. tasks.

  787. Big

  788. tasks.

  789. But we

  790. serve a

  791. bigger God.

  792. And He

  793. has called

  794. us to

  795. join Him

  796. on His

  797. mission.

  798. And He

  799. will enable

  800. us to do

  801. exactly what

  802. He wants

  803. us to do.

  804. We just

  805. have to

  806. trust and

  807. obey.

  808. If I

  809. say

  810. Metropolitan

  811. Tabernacle,

  812. you guys

  813. know what

  814. I'm talking

  815. about?

  816. No.

  817. Metropolitan

  818. Tabernacle

  819. is the

  820. church that

  821. Charles Spurgeon

  822. preached and

  823. was pastor

  824. for over

  825. 40 years

  826. in London,

  827. downtown

  828. London.

  829. In the

  830. 1800s,

  831. the Industrial

  832. Revolution was

  833. coming through.

  834. And listen to

  835. some of the

  836. problems that

  837. London faced.

  838. The Industrial

  839. Revolution began

  840. in the United

  841. Kingdom in the

  842. latter half of

  843. the 18th

  844. century.

  845. And by the

  846. 1850s,

  847. its effects

  848. pervaded

  849. England.

  850. In this

  851. period of

  852. great

  853. industrialization,

  854. people left

  855. their farms

  856. and small

  857. towns and

  858. flocked to

  859. London,

  860. Manchester,

  861. and other

  862. cities.

  863. As people

  864. congregated in

  865. vast numbers,

  866. the old

  867. infrastructure of

  868. London lacked

  869. the capacity and

  870. resources to

  871. attend to the

  872. needs of the

  873. new crowds.

  874. The influx of

  875. people into

  876. London meant

  877. not only a

  878. spike in

  879. laborers and

  880. factories,

  881. but also the

  882. number of

  883. under-resourced

  884. women,

  885. children,

  886. orphans,

  887. and widows

  888. exploded in

  889. London.

  890. The city was

  891. in crisis.

  892. The leaders

  893. didn't know

  894. what to do.

  895. They saw the

  896. mountain of

  897. needs that

  898. confronted them

  899. from every

  900. angle.

  901. Thus, in the

  902. 1850s, a lot

  903. of London

  904. churches did

  905. what a lot of

  906. American churches

  907. have done during

  908. the last 30

  909. years.

  910. They fled the

  911. cities.

  912. These churches

  913. moved their

  914. locations to the

  915. outskirts of

  916. London.

  917. Now, we

  918. don't deal

  919. with overpopulation

  920. here in

  921. Dahlonega and

  922. Gainesville.

  923. We don't deal

  924. with the

  925. Industrial Revolution

  926. coming through

  927. our area.

  928. But like

  929. Metropolitan

  930. Pabernacle,

  931. they had a

  932. decision to

  933. make.

  934. We have a

  935. decision to

  936. make.

  937. Are we going

  938. to be

  939. intentional and

  940. live in response

  941. to the

  942. gospel, or are

  943. we going to

  944. ignore the

  945. needs of

  946. people and

  947. ignore God?

  948. This is our

  949. decision to

  950. make.

  951. We ignore

  952. problems.

  953. We stub our

  954. noses sometimes.

  955. When are we

  956. going to get

  957. involved?

  958. When are we

  959. going to live

  960. intentional,

  961. missional lives?

  962. Are we going

  963. to fear the

  964. growing gay and

  965. lesbian culture

  966. because we

  967. don't know how

  968. to love them?

  969. Are we going

  970. to ignore the

  971. growing drug

  972. culture?

  973. Or are we

  974. going to fight

  975. it and love

  976. those who

  977. are in the

  978. middle of

  979. it?

  980. Are we

  981. going to

  982. embrace the

  983. art culture?

  984. Are we

  985. going to

  986. just be like

  987. most churches

  988. of the last

  989. century and

  990. ignore it?

  991. These are

  992. questions that

  993. we have to

  994. ask and

  995. answer because

  996. we are in

  997. Northeast Georgia.

  998. Are we

  999. going to live

  1000. missional lives

  1001. that are

  1002. intentional,

  1003. that are in

  1004. response to

  1005. the gospel?

  1006. Read what

  1007. Metropolitan

  1008. did.

  1009. Metropolitan

  1010. Tabernacle

  1011. pastored by

  1012. Charles Spurgeon

  1013. decided we're

  1014. not going to

  1015. do that.

  1016. We're going

  1017. to stay

  1018. here.

  1019. We see

  1020. this as an

  1021. opportunity

  1022. for the

  1023. gospel.

  1024. Metropolitan

  1025. Tabernacle

  1026. looked at the

  1027. needs of the

  1028. people in the

  1029. city and

  1030. began to

  1031. engage in

  1032. helping them

  1033. with their

  1034. problems.

  1035. The problems

  1036. of the

  1037. desperately

  1038. poor were

  1039. the most

  1040. pressing,

  1041. so Metropolitan

  1042. Tabernacle

  1043. leaders created

  1044. almshouses for

  1045. people who

  1046. lost their

  1047. jobs and

  1048. needed time to

  1049. get back on

  1050. their feet.

  1051. The poor

  1052. houses in

  1053. London operated

  1054. in terrible

  1055. conditions,

  1056. but the

  1057. almshouses of

  1058. Metropolitan

  1059. Tabernacle

  1060. provided a

  1061. crucial

  1062. alternative.

  1063. The church

  1064. also built a

  1065. large number

  1066. of homes for

  1067. the elderly

  1068. where they

  1069. would care for

  1070. them and

  1071. help them die

  1072. with dignity

  1073. and peace.

  1074. The church

  1075. created an

  1076. orphanage where

  1077. they educated,

  1078. cared for,

  1079. and fed

  1080. thousands of

  1081. orphans.

  1082. they created

  1083. homes for

  1084. single mothers

  1085. who had lost

  1086. their husbands

  1087. and helped

  1088. them find

  1089. employment.

  1090. Metropolitan

  1091. Tabernacle

  1092. started a

  1093. school for

  1094. pastors from

  1095. rural areas to

  1096. receive a

  1097. theological

  1098. education and

  1099. help clothe and

  1100. provide books

  1101. for these

  1102. impoverished

  1103. pastors.

  1104. They started

  1105. programs for

  1106. businessmen to

  1107. use their

  1108. entrepreneurial

  1109. efforts to

  1110. expand the

  1111. kingdom through

  1112. their businesses.

  1113. Now listen to

  1114. this.

  1115. Metropolitan

  1116. Tabernacle's

  1117. influence spread

  1118. so quickly

  1119. throughout the

  1120. poor and all

  1121. the way up

  1122. to the

  1123. class ladder

  1124. to the

  1125. aristocracy.

  1126. It got to

  1127. the point that

  1128. if Metropolitan

  1129. Tabernacle had

  1130. shut down at

  1131. any point during

  1132. that decade of

  1133. grappling with the

  1134. problems of the

  1135. Industrial Revolution,

  1136. the city of

  1137. London would have

  1138. been crippled.

  1139. They would have

  1140. grieved the

  1141. loss of the

  1142. Tabernacle.

  1143. Can you imagine

  1144. serving the needs

  1145. of the city,

  1146. being so attuned

  1147. to the common

  1148. good for the

  1149. sake of the

  1150. gospel,

  1151. that your city

  1152. would grieve

  1153. if you picked

  1154. up and

  1155. left?

  1156. Are we going

  1157. to live

  1158. intentional lives

  1159. in response to

  1160. the gospel?

  1161. Another way of

  1162. living missional

  1163. life is having

  1164. ownership of the

  1165. gospel and the

  1166. mission of God.

  1167. Have you ever

  1168. rented a car

  1169. and found

  1170. yourself treating

  1171. it worse than

  1172. you would your

  1173. own?

  1174. You get in it

  1175. and the first

  1176. thing you look at,

  1177. and this might

  1178. just be the

  1179. guys.

  1180. You get in it

  1181. and you look at

  1182. it and you

  1183. look and see

  1184. how far the

  1185. speedometer goes.

  1186. 120, 125,

  1187. what are we

  1188. looking at?

  1189. And then you

  1190. say, let's see

  1191. what this baby

  1192. will do.

  1193. We do this

  1194. because it's

  1195. not ours.

  1196. We don't have

  1197. ownership of it.

  1198. We don't care

  1199. as much about it.

  1200. We don't think

  1201. about it as much

  1202. and we certainly

  1203. don't live for it.

  1204. It's the same

  1205. with the gospel

  1206. and the mission

  1207. of God.

  1208. If the gospel

  1209. and the mission

  1210. of God are just

  1211. religious activities,

  1212. if they're just

  1213. things that we

  1214. do that just

  1215. happen on Sunday,

  1216. there's no

  1217. ownership.

  1218. If there's just

  1219. another activity

  1220. on our list

  1221. of responsibilities,

  1222. there's no

  1223. ownership.

  1224. You abuse it,

  1225. you ignore it,

  1226. and you don't

  1227. live for it.

  1228. But if,

  1229. if you have

  1230. ownership,

  1231. you take care

  1232. of it,

  1233. you love it,

  1234. you cherish it,

  1235. like your car,

  1236. you baby it,

  1237. and very seldom

  1238. do you floor it.

  1239. You find yourself

  1240. caring for it,

  1241. wanting to take

  1242. care of it,

  1243. cherishing it,

  1244. because it's yours.

  1245. Well,

1246. I'm here to tell you

  1247. that the gospel

  1248. and the mission

  1249. of God is yours.

  1250. It is yours

  1251. and it is mine.

  1252. Ephesians chapter 1.

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1253. Flip back to

  1254. Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1255. real quick.

  1256. Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1:3

  1257. verse 3.

  1258. It says,

  1259. Blessed be the

  1260. God and Father

  1261. of our Lord Jesus

  1262. Christ,

  1263. who has blessed

  1264. us in Christ

  1265. with every

  1266. spiritual blessing

  1267. in the heavenly

  1268. places,

  1269. even as He chose

  1270. us in Him

  1271. before the

  1272. foundation of the

  1273. world,

  1274. that we should

  1275. be holy

  1276. and blameless

  1277. before Him.

  1278. In love,

  1279. He predestined

  1280. us for

  1281. adoption as

  1282. sons through

  1283. Jesus Christ

  1284. according to

  1285. the purpose

  1286. of His will,

  1287. to the praise

  1288. of His glorious

  1289. grace with which

  1290. He has blessed

  1291. us in the

  1292. Beloved.

  1293. In Him,

  1294. we have

  1295. redemption

  1296. through His

  1297. blood,

  1298. the forgiveness

  1299. of our

  1300. trespasses

  1301. according to

  1302. the riches

  1303. of His grace,

  1304. which He

  1305. lavished upon

  1306. us in all

  1307. wisdom and

  1308. insight,

  1309. making known

  1310. to us

  1311. the mystery

  1312. of His

  1313. will,

  1314. according to

  1315. His purpose

  1316. which He

  1317. has set forth

  1318. in Christ

  1319. as a plan

  1320. for the

  1321. fullness of

  1322. time to

  1323. unite all

  1324. things in

  1325. Him,

  1326. things in

  1327. heaven and

  1328. things on

  1329. earth.

  1330. It is

  1331. personal.

  1332. This

  1333. salvation,

  1334. this adoption

  1335. is personal.

  1336. It's just

  1337. not an

  1338. activity.

  1339. No one

  1340. is adopted

  1341. without it

  1342. being personal.

  1343. Britain,

  1344. my oldest

  1345. is adopted

  1346. and it

  1347. has been

  1348. personal.

  1349. Her life

  1350. has been

  1351. affected by

  1352. her adoption

  1353. for the

  1354. good.

  1355. Let's be

  1356. honest.

  1357. it is

  1358. personal.

  1359. But,

  1360. we cannot

  1361. believe the

  1362. gospel without

  1363. being moved

  1364. to action

  1365. by it.

  1366. We cannot

  1367. believe the

  1368. gospel without

  1369. being moved

  1370. to action

  1371. by it.

  1372. See,

  1373. we know the

  1374. commandments of

  1375. God.

  1376. We know the

  1377. love that God

  1378. has for us.

  1379. And in turn,

  1380. we're supposed

  1381. to have for

  1382. others.

  1383. We know

  1384. these things.

  1385. We know

  1386. God's mission.

  1387. And because

  1388. we do,

  1389. we must

  1390. act.

  1391. In the book

  1392. Community

  1393. that I quoted

  1394. earlier,

  1395. it says,

  1396. when our

  1397. hearts beat

  1398. in rhythm

  1399. with His,

  1400. we begin

  1401. to see His

  1402. mission and

  1403. are ready

  1404. to take

  1405. ownership

  1406. of it.

  1407. I see it.

  1408. Do you see

  1409. God's mission?

  1410. Do you see

  1411. why He's doing

  1412. what He does?

  1413. Why He

  1414. redeems a

  1415. people?

  1416. to glorify

  1417. Himself by

  1418. making Himself

  1419. known.

  1420. Ownership is

  1421. marked by a

  1422. get-to

  1423. sacrifice and

  1424. not a got-to

  1425. out of duty.

  1426. Ownership is

  1427. a get-to.

  1428. We get to be

  1429. part of God's

  1430. mission.

  1431. We get to

  1432. join Him.

  1433. We get to

  1434. love people.

  1435. We get to

  1436. live the

  1437. gospel out for

  1438. others to see.

  1439. We get to

  1440. be on mission

  1441. with God.

  1442. We get to

  1443. join Him in

  1444. the work that

  1445. He is

  1446. already

  1447. doing.

  1448. There is

  1449. not a

  1450. got-to

  1451. attitude in

  1452. ownership.

  1453. It is a

  1454. get-to

  1455. sacrifice for

  1456. His glory

  1457. and His

  1458. name.

  1459. Own the

  1460. truth of

  1461. God and

  1462. get in the

  1463. game.

  1464. It is

  1465. real and

  1466. it is

  1467. personal.

  1468. Here's some

  1469. good news

  1470. though.

  1471. Here's some

  1472. really good

  1473. news.

  1474. God has

  1475. created us

  1476. for His

  1477. good work.

  1478. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:10

  1479. chapter 2

  1480. verse 10.

  1481. For we

  1482. are His

  1483. workmanship

  1484. created in

  1485. Christ Jesus

  1486. for good

  1487. works which

  1488. God prepared

  1489. before Him

  1490. that we

  1491. should walk

  1492. in them.

  1493. Not only

  1494. has God

  1495. created us

  1496. for His

  1497. good work,

  1498. we are

  1499. equipped for

  1500. His good

  1501. work.

  1502. Chapter 4

  1503. verse 11

  1504. and 12.

  1505. And He

  1506. gave the

  1507. apostles,

  1508. the prophets,

  1509. the evangelists,

  1510. the shepherds,

  1511. and teachers

  1512. to equip the

  1513. saints for the

  1514. work of the

  1515. ministry,

  1516. for building

  1517. up the

  1518. body of

  1519. Christ.

  1520. Not only

  1521. has God

  1522. created us

  1523. for this

  1524. work,

  1525. not only

  1526. has He

  1527. equipped us

  1528. for this

  1529. work,

  1530. but He

  1531. empowers us

  1532. and compels

  1533. us through

  1534. the gospel.

  1535. Again,

  1536. Ephesians

    Ephesians 3:20

  1537. chapter 3

  1538. verse 20

  1539. and 21.

  1540. Now to Him

  1541. who is able

  1542. to do far

  1543. more abundantly

  1544. than all

  1545. that we

  1546. ask or

  1547. think,

  1548. according to

  1549. the power

  1550. at work

  1551. within us.

  1552. To Him

  1553. be glory

  1554. in the

  1555. church and

  1556. in Christ

  1557. Jesus

  1558. throughout all

  1559. generations

  1560. forever and

  1561. ever.

  1562. Amen.

  1563. God has

  1564. created us

  1565. for His

  1566. work.

  1567. He equips

  1568. us for His

  1569. work and

  1570. He empowers

  1571. us for His

  1572. work through

  1573. the gospel.

  1574. There is no

  1575. reason to

  1576. fear.

  1577. There is no

  1578. reason to

  1579. worry.

  1580. There is no

  1581. reason to

  1582. doubt.

  1583. There is no

  1584. reason to

  1585. question.

  1586. He has

  1587. created us

  1588. for His

  1589. work.

  1590. He has

  1591. equipped us

  1592. for His

  1593. work and

  1594. He empowers

  1595. us for

  1596. His

  1597. work.

  1598. It is

  1599. why the

  1600. verse 1

  1601. of chapter

  1602. 5 says

  1603. and walk

  1604. in love.

  1605. We can

  1606. walk in

  1607. love because

  1608. He has

  1609. equipped us,

  1610. created us,

  1611. and empowered

  1612. us to be

  1613. able to do

  1614. just that.

  1615. Missional is

  1616. participating in

  1617. the mission of

  1618. God as a

  1619. response to

  1620. the gospel

  1621. through

  1622. proclamation

  1623. and practice

  1624. that is

  1625. missional.

  1626. We join

  1627. God in

  1628. His

  1629. mission,

  1630. on His

  1631. mission.

  1632. We don't

  1633. create a

  1634. new mission.

  1635. We join

  1636. Him in

  1637. what He

  1638. is already

  1639. doing.

  1640. That is

  1641. missional.

  1642. When we

  1643. are living

  1644. missional

  1645. lives,

  1646. by imitating

  1647. God,

  1648. people will

  1649. know.

  1650. Like when I

  1651. walked into

  1652. the Social

  1653. Security office

  1654. and I was

  1655. told I was

  1656. on federal

  1657. ground.

  1658. Nothing I

  1659. could do

  1660. about it.

  1661. I just

  1662. knew.

  1663. I guess.

  1664. I was

  1665. told and

  1666. I knew.

  1667. I was on

  1668. federal

  1669. property.

  1670. People will

  1671. know immediately

  1672. we're living

  1673. missional

  1674. lives.

  1675. You're

  1676. a Christian

  1677. on mission.

  1678. On God's

  1679. mission.

  1680. That is

  1681. being

  1682. missional.

  1683. Being

  1684. missional

  1685. begins and

  1686. ends with

  1687. the gospel.

  1688. We are

  1689. sent from

  1690. Him for

  1691. Him.

  1692. We have

  1693. been chosen

  1694. for His

  1695. mission,

  1696. for His

  1697. glory and

  1698. His name.

  1699. God.

  1700. See,

  1701. the gospel

  1702. compels

  1703. us.

  1704. It empowers

  1705. us.

  1706. And it

  1707. is the

  1708. message we

  1709. share.

  1710. Let us be

  1711. on mission

  1712. with God

  1713. and for

  1714. God.

  1715. That is

  1716. missional.

  1717. Let's pray

  1718. together.

  1719. Let us

  1720. desde
