  1. And why this is so ungodly is because it goes against the very centerpiece of the Christian faith.

  2. ! And if I ask you what is life about? What is a Christian life about?

  3. It's the glory of God. Like, everything is centered around the glory of God.

  4. And He is the focus. And this ideology makes us the focus.

  5. We're in the center, and we deserve to be in the center.

  6. So, I should really just... This is kind of a long intro. Sorry, before we get into 1 John here.

  7. You might ask the question like, what is it that corrupts us, you know, as people?

  8. A lot of people like to blame their sin on something.

  9. Like to say, the devil made me do it.

  10. Or, you know, I'm just a victim of a bad environment.

  11. But people in society just push me too hard.

  12. They know how to push my buttons and make me angry and go nuts.

  13. Even some people, on a more theological level, they want to blame their sin on Adam.

  14. You know, as if they don't commit their own sin every day.

  15. And their own hearts are corrupted.

  16. So, but the reality is, and I'll read you this really fast out of Mark 7.

  17. And Jesus said, do you not see that whatever goes into a person from the outside cannot defile him?

  18. And he says, a little later, right after that, all these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.

  19. We sin because we're sinners.

  20. So, he lists this long list of sins, descriptions of sins, like sexual immorality, adultery, murder, theft.

  21. And he says, they all come from within us.

  22. They don't, we're not corrupted by the outside, we're corrupted inside.

  23. So, when we sin, it's our deal.

  24. We, you know, he made me mad.

  25. No, he didn't.

  26. I chose to get mad.

  27. Like he, I can't blame it on him.

  28. You're responsible for your own sin.

  29. And so, another idea people have is if I can just remove myself from the world, I'll be a perfect Christian.

  30. Not true.

  31. And the reason why is because your sin will follow you wherever you go.

  32. A lot of people who go on, you know, mission trips, whatever you want to call it, like overseas, including people in history,

  33. they think that by going to some exotic place and getting involved and pointing their life out, none of their sin will follow them there.

  34. You know?

  35. And all of it does, they have to write, they write out the same things.

  36. Hudson Taylor, who went to China, wrote the very same thing.

  37. My sin has basically followed me here.

  38. Every insecurity I had and every problem I had is here with me right now in China.

  39. It didn't get better.

  40. So, has anybody ever seen the movie The Village?

  41. Anybody?

  42. Some people don't like scary movies, but that's a very interesting movie.

  43. If you could handle it, I would watch it.

  44. I think it's pretty clean.

  45. Here's why.

  46. It's got like some, you can learn a lot about the way humans are in that movie.

  47. They're this group of people that move out in the middle of nowhere and basically live like they did back in the 1800s or 1700s.

  48. And their goal is to, like, remove themselves from an evil and sinful society.

  49. That's, like, what they want to do.

  50. They think that by moving away, they can do that.

  51. But evil pops back up in the movie because humans sin against each other and great evil is committed.

  52. And they think, like, what happened?

  53. We tried to build this perfect world and it just fell apart.

  54. So, our sin will follow us.

  55. We can be alone in the middle of nowhere and it will be there with us.

  56. So, we can't blame the world for our sin is where I'm trying to go with this.

  57. We can't say it's too rough.

  58. I mean, it affects how I live.

  59. So, now getting into our text.

  60. We're not going to necessarily focus on verse 16 because John kind of, he explained that a few weeks ago.

  61. So, and like I said, this is going to warrant more, maybe a Q&A later.

  62. But I think I have three points out of this text and then we're going to spend some time on application.

  63. So, the first one is, we see in verse 15, it says,

  64. Do not love the world or the things in the world.

  65. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  66. So, the first point is, the world pushes away love for God.

  67. The world pushes away love for God.

  68. It reveals our identity.

  69. You are what you love.

  70. You are what you take delight in.

  71. The most, I think, one of the chief ways you can get to know somebody or say, I know that person well.

  72. You can't really say that unless you know what they desire and what they delight in and what they take joy in.

  73. So, you are what you love and you're controlled by what you love.

  74. And love for God and love for the world are at odds.

  75. They can't coexist.

  76. It would be like, it would be like saying, I love justice and innocence,

  77. but I'm glad that that serial killer or that child rapist was set free, even when they openly admitted it.

  78. You'd be contributing yourself.

  79. You can't say, I love freedom and liberty, but at the same time, I'm glad that I have some slaves that serve me.

  80. It's just a contradiction.

  81. So, God, you can't love him and the world at the same time.

  82. It doesn't work that way.

  83. You can't serve two masters, as Jesus would say.

  84. In Matthew 6, 24, I'll read this to you.

  85. He says,

  86. No man can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other.

  87. You cannot serve God and money.

  88. He uses money in this context.

  89. So, it reveals who we are based on what we love.

  90. And, as I said last week, the world will try to befriend you.

  91. It will try to bring you in and make you comfortable.

  92. And, we read in James 4, 4,

  93. You adulterous people, do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God?

  94. Therefore, whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

  95. So, it's important that you understand, like, you can't be all about the world,

  96. and where all your time and energy and money is just going into it,

  97. and, at the same time, love God.

  98. It just doesn't work that way.

  99. Love for the world diminishes your love for God.

  100. So, what I want to do here is,

  101. the first place I want to turn is Philippians 3, verse 6.

    Philippians 3:6

  102. I think I have five places for you to look tonight.

  103. Philippians 3, 6 through 8.

  104. Philippians 3, 6 through 8.

  105. And, I ask you the question,

  106. we've said this a lot here, but I think it's really, really good.

  107. It would be good to remind yourself.

  108. If you could go to heaven right now, like this very instant,

  109. and go and be in heaven,

  110. and you could have all the worldly pleasures that you enjoy here to the max,

  111. and it would be not simple, and it would be okay, not evil.

  112. You know, all the food, all the sex, whatever you could enjoy here,

  113. you could have there.

  114. Like, in the greatest way possible.

  115. You could go right now.

  116. Like, would you do it?

  117. There's just one catch to it.

  118. Christ is not going to be there.

  119. You still want to go.

  120. And, a lot of people make heaven not to be that way.

  121. I want to go and visit my dead relatives.

  122. I want to go and, you know,

  123. just play that golf course I think is going to be up there.

  124. It doesn't exist.

  125. Christ is heaven.

  126. And, the glory of God is what is in heaven.

  127. And, so, if you can answer that, and you say,

  128. I don't know if I really want to,

  129. then you need to take a close look at yourself,

  130. examine yourself,

  131. to see if you are a true believer.

  132. Because, Christ didn't save you so that you could marry the world,

  133. and marry sin again.

  134. He saved you for himself.

  135. And, true faith in him produces love for him.

  136. So, getting back to this,

  137. Philippians 3, 6 and 8.

  138. But, whatever gain I had,

  139. this is Paul talking,

  140. whatever gain I had,

  141. I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.

  142. Indeed, I count everything as loss

  143. because of the surpassing worth

  144. of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

  145. For his sake, I have suffered the loss of all things

  146. and count them as rubbish,

  147. in order that I might gain Christ.

  148. And, in this text, he's basically saying,

  149. whatever I thought was so valuable and so awesome,

  150. whatever I devoted my life to,

  151. I now consider refuge,

  152. dung,

  153. in comparison to knowing Christ.

  154. And, that's really the heartbeat of a Christian,

  155. if you are one.

  156. Now, we obviously have to struggle with,

  157. we definitely can get lured by the world,

  158. but we can't stay in it.

  159. We have to come out of it.

  160. We can't love the world like we love Christ.

  161. It's just a different kind of thing.

  162. So, we're to use all things for the glory of God

  163. and things we come in contact with

  164. and not allow us to consume us.

  165. So, if you identify yourself with the world,

  166. you're basically saying and identifying yourself

  167. as a God-hater,

  168. someone who is not a part of who God is at all.

  169. They can't coexist.

  170. And, this leads into our next point,

  171. number two,

  172. is found in verse 17.

  173. Go back to 1 John, sorry.

  174. Keep your hand there.

  175. I'll be flipping back.

  176. 1 John 2, verse 17,

    1 John 2:17

  177. says this,

  178. And the world is passing away along with its desires.

  179. Okay?

  180. So, the second point is,

  181. not only will the world try to push away your love for God,

  182. but it will,

  183. the world is passing away.

  184. That's the second point.

  185. The world is passing away.

  186. It's fleeting.

  187. It's going away right now as we speak, even.

  188. So, from this,

  189. what do we take out?

  190. We need to have a,

  191. a believer needs to have a great concept

  192. and meditate on this daily.

  193. an eternal perspective

  194. that you're going to last forever.

  195. And,

  196. that,

  197. if you invest in this world,

  198. it's a waste of time.

  199. Because this world is passing away,

  200. no one buys stock in a company

  201. they know is going to get bankrupt.

  202. Right?

  203. You don't go and build a house

  204. on a ship that you know is going to sink.

  205. You don't take all your riches

  206. and your money

  207. and possessions

  208. and put them in a place

  209. that you know is going to go get robbed

  210. and broken into

  211. and all your stuff is going to be taken away.

  212. It's foolishness.

  213. You don't do that.

  214. So,

  215. in the same way,

  216. if this world

  217. and things in it

  218. are the most valuable things to you,

  219. you're going to lose them

  220. because the world is passing away.

  221. And if you hold on to it,

  222. if you hold on to the,

  223. the world so tightly,

  224. you're going to perish with it.

  225. It's like the idea.

  226. Anybody ever read

  227. Mubby Dick?

  228. Getting way back

  229. in our literature.

  230. This one,

  231. the captain of that ship

  232. was obsessed

  233. with killing the whale.

  234. That was his goal.

  235. And eventually,

  236. he did it.

  237. Or he tried to do it.

  238. And eventually,

  239. the whale destroyed him.

  240. He was obsessed with that.

  241. That was his life goal.

  242. And he perished with it.

  243. You know,

  244. so this is

  245. a picture of us

  246. if we try to hold on to the world,

  247. we'll perish with it.

  248. So,

  249. so basically,

  250. if anyone loves the world,

  251. love for the Father

  252. will not be in him

  253. because all that is in the world

  254. is not of God.

  255. That's a summation of this.

  256. And,

  257. I'll throw this out there at you.

  258. In my parents' neighborhood

  259. a few weeks ago,

  260. there was a

  261. really,

  262. really,

  263. really expensive

  264. big house

  265. that was built

  266. in their neighborhood.

  267. And it burnt to the ground

  268. a few weeks ago.

  269. And,

  270. my mom and dad

  271. had a chance to go over

  272. and try to minister

  273. to these people.

  274. And they,

  275. they were like,

  276. man,

  277. our whole life has been there.

  278. You know,

  279. like it's all gone now.

  280. And you can just see

  281. like how

  282. terrible it is for them

  283. because that was their life.

  284. You know,

  285. it would hurt

  286. a lot of people,

  287. but not,

  288. but particularly people

  289. who don't have

  290. Christ as their ultimate treasure.

  291. And,

  292. it's,

  293. it's devastating.

  294. And,

  295. so,

  296. I want to read this out of

  297. first,

  298. our Colossians

  299. 3,

  300. 1 through 2 to you.

  301. It says,

  302. If then you have been

  303. raised with Christ,

  304. seek the things

  305. that are above

  306. where Christ is.

  307. Seated at the right hand

  308. of God.

  309. Set your minds

  310. on things above

  311. and not on things

  312. on the earth.

  313. So,

  314. a believer needs to have

  315. an eternal perspective

  316. that will help you

  317. battle against

  318. the things in the world.

  319. Third point,

  320. we're kind of moving

  321. through this,

  322. is,

  323. only love for God

  324. gives eternal life.

  325. Only love for God

  326. gives eternal life.

  327. This is in verse 17.

  328. Whoever does the will

  329. of God

  330. abides forever.

  331. So,

  332. loving God

  333. and obeying God

  334. and doing His will

  335. are not

  336. separate things.

  337. They,

  338. they coexist.

  339. They're together.

  340. You can't separate

  341. one from the other.

  342. You can't say,

  343. I love God,

  344. but I'm not going to

  345. do what He's commanded

  346. me to do.

  347. Jesus said

  348. in John 14,

  349. if you love me,

  350. you will keep

  351. my commandments.

  352. You will.

  353. It's an evidence

  354. of someone

  355. who truly knows

  356. who God is.

  357. and it's a lie

  358. to say,

  359. I love God

  360. and I'm going to

  361. disobey every

  362. commandment He's

  363. ever made.

  364. 1 John says

  365. that you're a liar.

  366. It's like blatantly

  367. said,

  368. you are a liar

  369. and the truth

  370. is not in you.

  371. So a paraphrase

  372. of all this

  373. is,

  374. if you love

  375. the world,

  376. you will perish

  377. with the world.

  378. But if you don't

  379. love the world,

  380. but love God

  381. and you do His will,

  382. you'll live with Him

  383. forever.

  384. That's basically

  385. a summation

  386. of what we just

  387. talked about.

  388. So,

  389. now,

  390. kind of getting

  391. to the harder part.

  392. And this was

  393. very hard,

  394. y'all.

  395. Like,

  396. we're going to get

  397. into some application

  398. here about

  399. what a lot of

  400. this means.

  401. you know,

  402. I want to do

  403. my best to try

  404. to tread the line

  405. between law

  406. and grace will.

  407. And,

  408. so,

  409. this will warrant

  410. further conversation.

  411. So we can talk

  412. about it later.

  413. Maybe we can have

  414. a Q&A later.

  415. But,

  416. I actually,

  417. again,

  418. kind of,

  419. one book I've read

  420. that has helped me

  421. the most,

  422. learning on how

  423. to deal with

  424. possessions

  425. and things in the world,

  426. an old school book.

  427. It's a section

  428. out of John Calvin's

  429. Institutes.

  430. And,

  431. it's called

  432. The Golden Book

  433. of the True Christian Life.

  434. They just made this

  435. part of the Christian life.

  436. And,

  437. one of these last chapters

  438. is called

  439. The Right Use

  440. of the Present World.

  441. And,

  442. this is really,

  443. really good.

  444. I would recommend,

  445. if you've ever read

  446. anything from Calvin before,

  447. this is a great place

  448. to start.

  449. But,

  450. he kind of talks about

  451. how to deal

  452. with the things

  453. we have in this life.

  454. We're going to

  455. unpack it a little bit.

  456. Then,

  457. I have some scripture.

  458. Then,

  459. I have some quotes.

  460. But,

  461. I'm going to use,

  462. like,

  463. this book,

  464. just kind of as a guide

  465. to walk through

  466. some things.

  467. And,

  468. first of all,

  469. in The Right Use

  470. of the Present World,

  471. this is what we're

  472. talking about,

  473. application,

  474. he says that

  475. we must avoid

  476. two extremes.

  477. Okay?

  478. Two extremes.

  479. The first one

  480. is legalism.

  481. And,

  482. that means basically

  483. adding extra

  484. biblical rules

  485. to things

  486. that aren't there.

  487. Your rules of conduct.

  488. You're being overly

  489. rigid on this.

  490. You know,

  491. adding to the commandments

  492. of God.

  493. And,

  494. God has not said,

  495. you can't do this.

  496. And,

  497. he said that's the first

  498. extreme.

  499. And,

  500. this is what he wrote.

  501. In their desire

  502. to correct

  503. such a pernicious evil,

  504. they have adopted

  505. the only method

  506. which they saw fit.

  507. Namely,

  508. to permit

  509. earthly blessings

  510. only in so far

  511. as their absolute necessity.

  512. You ever heard

  513. anybody say that?

  514. Like,

  515. if you don't need it,

  516. you don't,

  517. if it's not a necessity,

  518. you don't need that.

  519. You've heard

  520. that extreme camp before.

  521. He says,

  522. this advice

  523. showed the best

  524. of intentions,

  525. but was far too rigid.

  526. For they committed

  527. the very,

  528. excuse me,

  529. I have my papers mixed up.

  530. They committed

  531. the very dangerous error

  532. of imposing

  533. on the conscience

  534. of others

  535. stricter rules

  536. than those already

  537. laid down for us

  538. in the word of the Lord.

  539. Okay?

  540. Then he said,

  541. according to that camp,

  542. or according to them,

  543. it would be scarcely

  544. permissible

  545. to eat and drink

  546. anything but

  547. bread and water.

  548. Others saw

  549. even greater

  550. extremes

  551. of being rigid,

  552. like the man

  553. from Thebes

  554. is a historical story,

  555. who had said

  556. he threw all his

  557. treasures into the sea

  558. out of fear

  559. that unless they

  560. were destroyed,

  561. he himself

  562. would be destroyed

  563. by them.

  564. So he's like,

  565. he just renounced

  566. all his riches

  567. because he was afraid

  568. they were just going

  569. to destroy him.

  570. So he said,

  571. that's the first camp

  572. to avoid.

  573. If you were just like,

  574. stay away from it,

  575. it's going to mess you up.

  576. Don't even get near it.

  577. You know?

  578. So that's the first camp,

  579. legalism.

  580. The second extreme

  581. is licentiousness.

  582. That's a big word.

  583. That's a scriptural word.

  584. And it basically means this,

  585. lacking or regarding

  586. for legal or moral

  587. restrictions.

  588. You know?

  589. It means like,

  590. hey,

  591. God made it for us,

  592. let's just enjoy it.

  593. You know?

  594. And you kind of go

  595. the other extreme,

  596. the other side

  597. of the pendulum.

  598. And this is what he said.

  599. On the other hand,

  600. there are many others

  601. nowadays who seek

  602. to prevent,

  603. to excuse

  604. and temperament,

  605. you know,

  606. keeping things under control

  607. in the use of external things

  608. and who desire

  609. to indulge

  610. in the lust of the flesh.

  611. So you've got

  612. the other camp.

  613. You've got the one

  614. Christian group

  615. that's like,

  616. don't even go near beer.

  617. Like,

  618. don't even look at it.

  619. Don't even look at it.

  620. The other camp is like,

  621. hey,

  622. God made it for us to enjoy.

  623. And they let go

  624. and just get totally wasted.

  625. That's like the two camps

  626. you can't be in.

  627. Neither one of those

  628. are the correct biblical view.

  629. So,

  630. that's the two extremes

  631. he says to avoid

  632. that I think are very,

  633. very wise and shrewd.

  634. Another point he makes,

  635. so that's the first one,

  636. the point he makes,

  637. and these are going to be guidelines

  638. for the right use

  639. of things in the world.

  640. The second one is

  641. hindered or assisted.

  642. Okay?

  643. Hindered or assisted.

  644. And he pulls out this

  645. from scripture.

  646. Christians are pilgrims,

  647. are travelers.

  648. That's the way scripture

  649. identifies Christians.

  650. Traveling through this world

  651. on the way to

  652. Mount Zion,

  653. you know,

  654. the city of God,

  655. the eternal realm of God.

  656. Pilgrim's progress

  657. is a great picture of this.

  658. So,

  659. what do you do?

  660. How do you view the things

  661. that you,

  662. a lot of pilgrimages

  663. were going that way

  664. and there's so many things

  665. we're surrounded with?

  666. How do we like,

  667. keep going that way

  668. and not get like,

  669. oh,

  670. get over here

  671. and get totally distracted?

  672. And in Pilgrim's progress,

  673. he's going towards,

  674. you know,

  675. Zion,

  676. you know,

  677. the kingdom of God,

  678. basically.

  679. And there's a place

  680. on the side of the road

  681. called Vanity Fair.

  682. and it basically has

  683. everything you can want.

  684. Like,

  685. all the allurements

  686. of the flesh,

  687. like it's all there.

  688. Wherever he wants,

  689. he could have it.

  690. And it says that it was

  691. placed there by,

  692. basically by Satan

  693. to distract pilgrims

  694. on their way

  695. to going to the city.

  696. So,

  697. this is what he says.

  698. This is what Calvin says

  699. about this.

  700. He says,

  701. the Lord prescribes to us

  702. in his word

  703. when he teaches us

  704. that his servants

  705. for the present life

  706. are pilgrims

  707. in which they are traveling

  708. towards the heavenly kingdom.

  709. And here's the application.

  710. We ought undoubtedly

  711. to make such use

  712. of its blessings

  713. that we are assisted

  714. rather than delayed

  715. in our journey.

  716. So,

  717. if there's something

  718. that's not going to be

  719. beneficial to you

  720. to partake in,

  721. shake it loose.

  722. Get rid of it.

  723. You want to like

  724. have things in your life,

  725. possessions,

  726. relationships,

  727. whatever,

  728. that are going to enable you

  729. and encourage you

  730. in your journey,

  731. not like putting a weight

  732. on your leg

  733. and distracting you

  734. from your ultimate goal.

  735. So,

  736. that's a really important,

  737. you know,

  738. point to make.

  739. Turn to

  740. 1 Corinthians chapter 7.

    1 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  741. 1 Corinthians chapter 7.

    1 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  742. verse 29.

  743. Verse 29.

  744. This is a really interesting verse,

  745. kind of tucked away

  746. in the New Testament.

  747. A lot of people

  748. just breeze over.

  749. Verse 29 says this,

  750. This is what I mean,

  751. brothers.

  752. The appointed time

  753. has grown very short.

  754. From now on,

  755. let those who have lives

  756. live as though they had none.

  757. and those who mourn

  758. as though they were not mourning.

  759. And those who rejoice

  760. as though they were not rejoicing.

  761. And those who buy

  762. as though they had no goods.

  763. And those who deal with the world

  764. as though they had not,

  765. no dealings with it.

  766. For the present form of this world

  767. is passing away.

  768. So,

  769. it's this idea that we

  770. can't engage the things around us.

  771. We can,

  772. you know,

  773. we can enjoy the stuff

  774. that God has around us.

  775. But,

  776. God is like saying,

  777. cultivate such a

  778. eternal perspective,

  779. you know,

  780. like a right understanding

  781. of what the Christian life is.

  782. And have such a satisfaction

  783. in Christ

  784. that you can involve yourself

  785. with suffering in this world.

  786. And you can lose it

  787. and you're like,

  788. okay,

  789. I'll move on.

  790. That's kind of the goal.

  791. Like,

  792. you don't want to be like,

  793. man,

  794. I lost that.

  795. I lost that.

  796. You're going to be able to

  797. engage with things

  798. in such a way

  799. as though

  800. you are not engaging with them.

  801. You can just let them go.

  802. Like,

  803. if that was the point.

  804. And,

  805. it's a very interesting passage

  806. to look at.

  807. Something that's not going to

  808. keep you where you are

  809. and weigh you down.

  810. Next point he makes in the book

  811. is that

  812. earthly things

  813. are gifts from God.

  814. Earthly things

  815. are gifts from God.

  816. So,

  817. the using of temple blessings

  818. cannot be wrong.

  819. If,

  820. if,

  821. they're directed

  822. to the same purposes

  823. for which God created them.

  824. Okay?

  825. Because,

  826. everything that God made

  827. was good.

  828. Everything.

  829. I had a friend of mine

  830. in seminary

  831. a while back.

  832. He said he had to

  833. write a paper.

  834. It basically was like

  835. having to correct

  836. false teaching

  837. and that was the kind of goal

  838. of what this paper was about.

  839. It was,

  840. what he had to address

  841. was somebody who said like,

  842. well,

  843. everything God made

  844. was good

  845. and therefore

  846. like we can do

  847. you know,

  848. marijuana and drugs

  849. and like thinking

  850. about it and saying

  851. like,

  852. well,

  853. because it's good.

  854. And he had to basically

  855. kind of explain

  856. like that's not what's being said.

  857. Um,

  858. that's not what we're trying

  859. to deal with here.

  860. Like,

  861. God gave us things

  862. to enjoy.

  863. They're gifts from God

  864. and it's not wrong

  865. to use them

  866. if we use them

  867. for the purposes

  868. that God intended

  869. for us to use them in.

  870. Not taking them

  871. beyond the border,

  872. so to say,

  873. from what he intended.

  874. This is what Calvin said.

  875. He said,

  876. if we study,

  877. for instance,

  878. while he has created

  879. the various kinds of food,

  880. we shall find

  881. that it was his intention

  882. not only

  883. to provide for our needs

  884. but likewise

  885. for our pleasure

  886. and our delight

  887. in herbs

  888. and trees

  889. and fruit.

  890. Besides being useful

  891. in various ways,

  892. he planted to please us

  893. by their gracious wines

  894. and pleasant odors.

  895. So everything around us

  896. was meant

  897. to like elevate us

  898. to worship the creator.

  899. See that?

  900. Like,

  901. we can delight in these things

  902. but not taking them

  903. beyond what he intended,

  904. obviously.

  905. While you're in 1 Corinthians,

  906. flip back to chapter 6

  907. real fast.

  908. A very, very helpful verse.

  909. Verse 12,

  910. chapter 6.

  911. Great verse.

  912. He says in verse 12,

  913. Paul talking,

  914. All things are lawful for me,

  915. but not all things are helpful.

  916. All things are lawful for me,

  917. but I will not be enslaved

  918. by anything.

  919. See that?

  920. There's like,

  921. there's things that are good

  922. in this world

  923. that we could enjoy

  924. and partake in.

  925. But he says,

  926. there's some things

  927. that are just not

  928. of any benefit to me

  929. to engage in.

  930. So I'm going to stay away

  931. from those things.

  932. At the same time,

  933. the things that I do enjoy,

  934. I cannot allow

  935. to enslave me

  936. and control me.

  937. You see that?

  938. And like,

  939. I have some buddies in here,

  940. they love to smoke

  941. cigars and pipes.

  942. I love the smell.

  943. I wish I could do it.

  944. But that would not

  945. be beneficial for me

  946. because I've had

  947. a lung transplant

  948. and my daughters

  949. would shoot me.

  950. See,

  951. like you can't,

  952. I can't engage

  953. in certain activities

  954. because like,

  955. it would be okay,

  956. it wouldn't be illegal

  957. for me to do that,

  958. but it would not be

  959. a benefit to me,

  960. obviously.

  961. And so there's,

  962. might not be the best analogy,

  963. but this is one

  964. that came to mind.

  965. So,

  966. don't be enslaved

  967. by any good thing.

  968. Don't take good things

  969. beyond what God

  970. intended them to be.

  971. And don't reject them either

  972. because earthly things

  973. are gifts from God.

  974. So,

  975. next point,

  976. I don't know what number

  977. we're on,

  978. I don't have numbers,

  979. is that true gratitude

  980. will restrain us

  981. from abuse.

  982. A true gratitude

  983. will restrain us

  984. from abuse.

  985. So,

  986. a right understanding

  987. of God

  988. and His gifts

  989. leads us to thankfulness

  990. and gratitude for them.

  991. And it allows us

  992. to be like,

  993. wow,

  994. He made this for me,

  995. I'm going to use it

  996. for the reason He made it.

  997. And,

  998. I'm going to give Him glory

  999. for allowing me to do this.

  1000. Calvin said,

1001. we should praise His kindness

  1002. towards us

  1003. in heavenly,

  1004. or earthly matters

  1005. by giving Him thanks.

  1006. You know,

  1007. so,

1008. He's given us good things,

1009. but if we abuse them,

1010. they will backfire on us.

  1011. There's a verse

  1012. in Proverbs 25

  1013. that says,

1014. if you have found honey,

1015. eat only enough for you,

1016. lest you will have your fill

  1017. and you will vomit.

  1018. Like,

1019. some things taken too far

  1020. are going to,

  1021. like,

  1022. backfire on you.

  1023. So,

  1024. but,

  1025. a right understanding

  1026. of these gifts

  1027. don't hinder you

  1028. from enjoying them.

  1029. You can give glory

  1030. to God

1031. because of what He's made,

1032. and it all goes back

  1033. to Him.

  1034. Everything is from Him,

  1035. through Him,

  1036. and to Him.

  1037. It's that idea.

  1038. So,

  1039. here's the rule.

1040. I think this is like

  1041. the,

  1042. you know,

1043. the last one that I have

1044. from Him in this book.

  1045. Basically,

  1046. He says,

  1047. let us live

  1048. in moderation.

  1049. Let us live

  1050. in moderation.

  1051. And,

  1052. that means

1053. you're not going to be

1054. one extreme or the other

  1055. in those camps.

  1056. You're not going to,

  1057. like,

  1058. throw away the gifts

  1059. and say,

  1060. they'll corrupt me.

1061. I don't want to get near them.

1062. And then you're not going

  1063. to,

  1064. like,

  1065. indulge in them

  1066. to the point of

  1067. sin,

  1068. gluttony,

  1069. and licentiousness.

  1070. You're going to be

  1071. kind of,

  1072. like,

  1073. in the middle.

  1074. The proper balance

  1075. of the right use

  1076. of the things

  1077. in this life.

  1078. And,

  1079. you're going to use,

  1080. but not abuse,

  1081. idea,

1082. the things in this life.

  1083. And,

  1084. so,

1085. the gifts that He gives us

  1086. are parameters

  1087. for His glory.

  1088. So,

  1089. sorry,

  1090. turn to

  1091. Proverbs 30,

  1092. real fast.

  1093. Proverbs 30.

  1094. This is another

  1095. really cool passage.

1096. It's kind of tucked away.

  1097. Proverbs 30,

    Proverbs 30:7

  1098. verse 7.

  1099. Proverbs 30,

    Proverbs 30:7

  1100. verse 7.

  1101. It says,

  1102. sorry,

1103. two things I ask of you,

  1104. talking to the Lord.

1105. Deny them not to me

  1106. before I die.

  1107. Remove far from me

  1108. falsehood and lying.

  1109. Give me neither

  1110. poverty

  1111. nor riches.

1112. Feed me with the food

1113. that is needful for me.

  1114. Lest I be full

  1115. and deny you

  1116. and say,

  1117. who is the Lord?

1118. Or lest I be poor

  1119. and steal

  1120. and profane

1121. the name of my God.

  1122. Pretty cool.

  1123. It's this idea of,

  1124. like,

  1125. Lord,

  1126. please help me have

  1127. just enough

  1128. to not make it

  1129. an idol.

  1130. But also,

  1131. don't leave me

  1132. in poverty

  1133. and want to provide

  1134. for what I need.

  1135. It's a good way

  1136. of looking at things.

  1137. So moderation

  1138. is the goal

  1139. of the right use

1140. of things in this life.

  1141. Not to abuse them

1142. and not to neglect them,

  1143. but in the middle.

  1144. So,

  1145. I know people

  1146. think about alcohol.

1147. A lot of other things

  1148. are coming to mind

  1149. right now.

  1150. This might be

  1151. a conversation

  1152. for later.

  1153. But,

  1154. quickly,

  1155. some more application.

  1156. Two random things.

  1157. I feel like I got

  1158. kind of rocky

  1159. here at the end.

  1160. Sorry.

  1161. We'll talk just briefly

  1162. about wealth,

  1163. money,

  1164. and possessions.

  1165. And,

  1166. key text

  1167. we'll look at.

  1168. And we'll have,

  1169. like,

  1170. maybe two other

  1171. places where you

  1172. look at.

  1173. 1 Timothy,

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  1174. chapter 6.

1175. This will be a good

  1176. text to look at.

  1177. 1 Timothy,

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  1178. chapter 6.

  1179. And we're going to

  1180. read this,

  1181. 6 through 10.

  1182. This is where

  1183. it really gets picky

  1184. because,

  1185. you know,

  1186. we're picking on

  1187. certain things now.

  1188. 1 Timothy,

    1 Timothy 6:6

  1189. chapter 6,

  1190. verse 6.

  1191. Now there is

  1192. great gain

  1193. in godliness

  1194. with contentment.

  1195. For we brought

  1196. nothing into this

  1197. world,

  1198. and we can take

  1199. nothing out of it.

  1200. But if we have

  1201. food and clothing,

  1202. with these we will

  1203. be content.

  1204. But those who

  1205. desire to be rich

  1206. fall into temptation,

  1207. into a snare,

  1208. into many senseless

  1209. and harmful desires

  1210. that plunge people

  1211. into ruin and

  1212. destruction.

1213. For the love of money

  1214. is the root of

  1215. all kinds of evil.

  1216. It is through this

  1217. craving that some

  1218. have wandered away

  1219. from the faith

  1220. and pierced

  1221. themselves with

  1222. many pains.

  1223. There's a lot

  1224. in that.

  1225. But notice his

  1226. language.

  1227. He's not saying

  1228. that money in and

  1229. of itself is evil.

  1230. He's saying the

  1231. love of money,

  1232. the abuse of money,

  1233. that one side we

  1234. were talking about,

  1235. that one extreme

  1236. camp.

  1237. I've got to have

  1238. money.

  1239. Because with money

  1240. you can have

  1241. anything you want.

  1242. You can have any

  1243. kind of pleasure.

  1244. You can buy

  1245. exactly what your

  1246. flesh wants.

  1247. So,

  1248. we're talking about

  1249. this specifically

  1250. in the confines

  1251. of a believer's

  1252. life.

  1253. Okay?

  1254. There is a

  1255. half-truth

  1256. that I believe

  1257. we live with

  1258. here in the

  1259. American church.

  1260. And it is this.

  1261. It sounds

  1262. something like

  1263. this.

  1264. We glorify God

  1265. with our wealth

  1266. by being thankful

  1267. and enjoying

  1268. all the luxuries

  1269. he allows us

  1270. to buy.

  1271. Like,

  1272. thank you,

  1273. Lord,

  1274. forgive me

  1275. this,

  1276. and now I'm

  1277. going to go

  1278. and spend it

  1279. any way I

  1280. want to spend

  1281. it.

  1282. Because he gave

  1283. it to me

  1284. as long as

  1285. I'm thankful,

  1286. right?

  1287. I'm going to

  1288. go and spend

  1289. it however

  1290. I want to.

  1291. The true part

  1292. of that statement

  1293. is that we

  1294. should be

  1295. thankful because

  1296. God gives us

  1297. every good thing,

  1298. including money

  1299. and possessions.

  1300. He gives us

  1301. those things,

  1302. so that's the

  1303. right part.

  1304. The false part

  1305. is that we

  1306. can glorify God

  1307. by every purchase

  1308. we make.

  1309. Not true.

  1310. It's not true.

  1311. And,

  1312. let me read

  1313. you this quote

  1314. by John

  1315. Piper.

  1316. He says,

  1317. God is not

  1318. glorified when

  1319. we keep for

  1320. ourselves,

  1321. no matter how

  1322. thankfully,

  1323. we ought to be

  1324. using to

  1325. alleviate the

  1326. misery of the

  1327. un-evangelized,

  1328. un-educated,

  1329. un-medicated,

  1330. and unfed

  1331. millions.

  1332. We should be

  1333. using our

  1334. wealth for

  1335. the advancement

  1336. of the

  1337. kingdom for

  1338. the most part.

  1339. That's what he's

  1340. trying to say.

  1341. There are so

  1342. many people that

  1343. need help,

  1344. and I'm

  1345. convinced that

  1346. now,

  1347. more than

  1348. ever,

  1349. Christians in

  1350. America,

  1351. particularly in

  1352. the West,

  1353. they're going to

  1354. be held to a

  1355. higher standard

  1356. by God

  1357. than people in

  1358. the past.

  1359. And the

  1360. reason why

  1361. is because we

  1362. don't have to

  1363. get on a boat

  1364. and go months

  1365. and months to

  1366. somewhere and

  1367. help somebody in

  1368. need,

  1369. we can do

  1370. it by

  1371. clicking and

  1372. sending things

  1373. and helping

  1374. people in that

  1375. regard.

  1376. And so,

  1377. don't say,

  1378. well,

  1379. because I don't

  1380. see these

  1381. people,

  1382. I don't have

  1383. to help them.

  1384. We know

  1385. they exist.

  1386. We know

  1387. they're there.

  1388. We know

  1389. there's misery

  1390. out there.

  1391. And this is

  1392. the rest of

  1393. it,

  1394. what he said.

  1395. This evidence

  1396. that many

  1397. professional

  1398. Christians have

  1399. been deceived

  1400. by this

  1401. doctrine is

  1402. how little

  1403. they give

  1404. and how much

  1405. they own.

  1406. That's what

  1407. identifies this.

  1408. He says,

  1409. God has

  1410. prospered them

  1411. and by almost

  1412. an irresistible

  1413. law of consumer

  1414. culture,

  1415. baptized by a

  1416. doctrine of

  1417. health,

  1418. wealth,

  1419. and prosperity,

  1420. we have

  1421. bought bigger

  1422. than more

  1423. houses,

  1424. newer and

  1425. more cars,

  1426. fancier and

  1427. more clothes,

  1428. better and

  1429. more meat,

  1430. in all matter

  1431. of trinkets,

  1432. gadgets,

  1433. containers,

  1434. devices,

  1435. equipment,

  1436. to make

  1437. life more

  1438. fun.

  1439. That's

  1440. very

  1441. convicting.

  1442. He definitely

  1443. is not saying

  1444. you can't

  1445. buy some

  1446. possession like

  1447. something you

  1448. take to

  1449. light in,

  1450. like a

  1451. fishing pole

  1452. or go

  1453. fishing.

  1454. That's not

  1455. what he's

  1456. trying to

  1457. say.

  1458. He's

  1459. trying to

  1460. say that

  1461. when we

  1462. look at

  1463. most

  1464. Christians,

  1465. particularly

  1466. here in

  1467. America,

  1468. you look at

  1469. what they

  1470. own,

  1471. and then

  1472. you look,

  1473. well,

  1474. you're not

  1475. really supposed

  1476. to do this,

  1477. but if

  1478. you could

  1479. see how

  1480. much they

  1481. give,

  1482. it's like

  1483. nowhere in

  1484. comparison.

  1485. Nowhere.

  1486. They don't

  1487. even touch

  1488. it at

  1489. all.

  1490. We give

  1491. so little

  1492. to the

  1493. cause of

  1494. Christ.

  1495. He can

  1496. say this

  1497. because I

  1498. know that

  1499. Piper lives

  1500. in a very

  1501. poor

  1502. neighborhood

  1503. in

  1504. Minneapolis.

  1505. I know

  1506. pastors get

  1507. paid far

  1508. more than

  1509. he does

  1510. personally.

  1511. He really

  1512. wants to

  1513. be clear

  1514. that all

  1515. the money

  1516. that I

  1517. earn from

  1518. my books

  1519. and all

  1520. that is

  1521. not going

  1522. to me.

  1523. It's going

  1524. to

  1525. expand

  1526. the

  1527. kingdom

  1528. of

  1529. God.

  1530. He lives

  1531. on a

  1532. very low

  1533. paycheck.

  1534. He's not

  1535. doing that

  1536. to glorify

  1537. himself.

  1538. He's trying

  1539. to show

  1540. that money

  1541. and possessions

  1542. is not my

  1543. treasure.

  1544. Christ is

  1545. and I

  1546. don't need

  1547. those things.

  1548. That's really

  1549. kind of what

  1550. the point is.

  1551. He wants

  1552. to glorify

  1553. Christ.

  1554. I really

  1555. think that's

  1556. it.

  1557. God is

  1558. not

  1559. pleasing

  1560. us going

  1561. out and

  1562. making

  1563. any

  1564. purses.

  1565. Thank you

  1566. for that.

  1567. We need

  1568. to be

  1569. deliberate

  1570. about how

  1571. we are

  1572. spending

  1573. our

  1574. money

  1575. to

  1576. alleviate

  1577. the

  1578. unevangelized

  1579. uneducated

  1580. and unmedicated.

  1581. So,

  1582. here's the

  1583. other side

  1584. of this.

  1585. Here's another

  1586. right use of

  1587. our money,

  1588. right use.

  1589. The problem

  1590. is not with

  1591. earning a lot

  1592. of money.

  1593. the problem

  1594. is living a

  1595. lifestyle that

  1596. is maintained

  1597. by that

  1598. amount of

  1599. money.

  1600. So,

  1601. you can go

  1602. out and

  1603. make $200,000

  1604. a year,

  1605. but you

  1606. can't be

  1607. justified

  1608. living a

  1609. $200,000

  1610. lifestyle.

  1611. There's just

  1612. no way.

  1613. And,

  1614. God didn't

  1615. enlarge your

  1616. deposit or

  1617. your bank

  1618. account for

  1619. you to go

  1620. out and

  1621. buy and

  1622. build bigger

  1623. barns like

  1624. the parable

  1625. Jesus gives

  1626. about the

  1627. rich ruler.

  1628. The fool

  1629. who built

  1630. bigger barns

  1631. so that he

  1632. could eat,

  1633. drink,

  1634. and be

  1635. merry.

  1636. So,

  1637. God increases

  1638. our yield,

  1639. not so that

  1640. we'll indulge

  1641. in it,

  1642. but we'll

  1643. take that

  1644. yield and

  1645. give it to

  1646. God.

  1647. And,

  1648. in this

  1649. text,

  1650. in verse 6,

  1651. we read that

  1652. with godliness

  1653. there is

  1654. great contentment.

  1655. So,

  1656. the goal in

  1657. life is not

  1658. to have more.

  1659. The goal in

  1660. life is to

  1661. have less.

  1662. And,

  1663. I read a

  1664. book a long

  1665. time ago

  1666. by this

  1667. Puritan guy

  1668. named

  1669. Jeremiah

  1670. Burroughs.

  1671. And,

  1672. this is

  1673. one of

  1674. his texts

  1675. he used,

  1676. but he

  1677. said this,

  1678. very profound.

  1679. He said,

  1680. contentment

  1681. comes by way

  1682. of subtraction

  1683. and not

  1684. addition.

  1685. The more

  1686. things you

  1687. think you

  1688. need,

  1689. the less

  1690. content you

  1691. are.

  1692. But,

  1693. the less

  1694. you need,

  1695. particularly if

  1696. you have

  1697. Christ,

  1698. you realize

  1699. you don't

  1700. need all

  1701. those things.

  1702. You have

  1703. everything

  1704. in him.

  1705. So,

  1706. the verse

  1707. in Luke

  1708. 12,

  1709. I read it

  1710. to you.

  1711. Sell your

  1712. positions,

  1713. Jesus says,

  1714. sell your

  1715. possessions

  1716. and give

  1717. to the

  1718. needy.

  1719. Provide

  1720. yourselves

  1721. with money

  1722. bags that

  1723. do not

  1724. grow old,

  1725. with a

  1726. treasure in

  1727. heaven that

  1728. does not

  1729. fail,

  1730. where no

  1731. thief approaches

  1732. and no

  1733. moth destroys,

  1734. for there

  1735. your treasure

  1736. is,

  1737. your heart

  1738. will be

  1739. also.

  1740. That's

  1741. Luke 12,

  1742. 33-34.

  1743. I thought

  1744. I would

  1745. just give

  1746. you some

  1747. examples of

  1748. this.

  1749. Okay,

  1750. guys,

  1751. just really

  1752. fast.

  1753. It's hot

  1754. in here,

  1755. and I

  1756. definitely

  1757. feel some

  1758. heat.

  1759. I'm hot.

  1760. I'm starting

  1761. to sweat.

  1762. But,

  1763. it's too late

  1764. to turn the

  1765. air on now.

  1766. It'll be too

  1767. late.

  1768. I was,

  1769. a while back,

  1770. or a year

  1771. ago,

  1772. I was talking

  1773. to my

  1774. grandmother,

  1775. who lives

  1776. in North

  1777. Carolina,

  1778. and my

  1779. grandmother

  1780. and my

  1781. step-grandfather,

  1782. they're awesome.

  1783. People who

  1784. really love the

  1785. Lord,

  1786. and give

  1787. a lot of

  1788. their life

  1789. away to

  1790. the kingdom,

  1791. and she

  1792. was saying,

  1793. look,

  1794. I'm kind

  1795. of like

  1796. semi-investigated

  1797. by the IRS

  1798. and I'm

  1799. like,

  1800. what?

  1801. And I

  1802. said,

  1803. Grandma,

  1804. what are

  1805. you talking

  1806. about?

  1807. And she

  1808. said,

  1809. well,

  1810. they

  1811. couldn't

  1812. really

  1813. understand

  1814. why 60%

  1815. of our

  1816. income

  1817. was going

  1818. to

  1819. missionaries

  1820. and ministries

  1821. and churches.

  1822. And I

  1823. was like,

  1824. Grandma,

  1825. that is

  1826. awesome.

  1827. She was

  1828. like,

  1829. oh,

  1830. no.

  1831. I'm

  1832. like,

  1833. Grandma,

  1834. that's

  1835. awesome.

  1836. You need

  1837. to take

  1838. that

  1839. and dive

  1840. in it

  1841. and frame

  1842. it and put

  1843. it on

  1844. your wall.

  1845. That is

  1846. amazing.

  1847. And that's

  1848. really,

  1849. yeah,

  1850. they were

  1851. cool.

  1852. They were

  1853. like,

  1854. all right,

  1855. that's

  1856. just weird.

  1857. Why don't

  1858. you guys

  1859. do that?

  1860. It was

  1861. their

  1862. response.

  1863. But the

  1864. goal,

  1865. they know

  1866. they're

  1867. wanting to

  1868. invest in

  1869. eternity.

  1870. It's

  1871. something that

  1872. matters,

  1873. not just

  1874. live up to

  1875. high life in

  1876. retirement,

  1877. but to

  1878. give their

  1879. lives away.

  1880. A guy

  1881. that I

  1882. would

  1883. encourage you

  1884. to look

  1885. into,

  1886. he was a

  1887. Christian

  1888. musician

  1889. named

  1890. Keith

  1891. Green.

  1892. Back in

  1893. the hippie

  1894. days,

  1895. basically.

  1896. Early

  1897. Christian

  1898. music

  1899. pioneer

  1900. guy.

  1901. He had

  1902. a huge

  1903. pro and

  1904. a big

  1905. beer,

  1906. and he

  1907. played the

  1908. piano and

  1909. went to

  1910. town.

  1911. Awesome

  1912. guy,

  1913. though.

  1914. He,

  1915. pretty

  1916. dramatic

  1917. conversion,

  1918. but eventually

  1919. he rolled

  1920. around this

  1921. idea of

  1922. like,

  1923. why in the

  1924. world do

  1925. we charge

  1926. so much

  1927. for our

  1928. concerts?

  1929. Why in

  1930. the world

  1931. do we

  1932. sell

  1933. people

  1934. our

  1935. music?

  1936. He

  1937. basically

  1938. said the

  1939. gospel

  1940. cannot be

  1941. sold.

  1942. You can't

  1943. buy the

  1944. gospel.

  1945. So he

  1946. rebelled

  1947. against the

  1948. Christian

  1949. music system.

  1950. He was

  1951. like,

  1952. I'm going

  1953. to have

  1954. offering

  1955. concerts.

  1956. People

  1957. can come

  1958. and give

  1959. me

  1960. whatever

  1961. they

  1962. want.

  1963. He

  1964. started

  1965. his own

  1966. record

  1967. company

  1968. called

  1969. Pretty

  1970. Good

  1971. Records.

  1972. He had

  1973. a sign

  1974. that said,

  1975. would you

  1976. like to

  1977. buy Keith

  1978. Green's

  1979. new

  1980. album?

  1981. You

  1982. can't

  1983. !

  1984. It's not

  1985. for sale.

  1986. So he

  1987. would just

  1988. rely on the

  1989. Lord to

  1990. provide.

  1991. Sometimes

  1992. people would

  1993. send in

  1994. money for

  1995. one album.

  1996. It might

  1997. have been

  1998. just a few

  1999. dollars,

  2000. but they

  2001. would send

  2002. him $1,000

  2003. for one

  2004. album.

  2005. What you're

  2006. doing is

  2007. awesome.

  2008. We want

  2009. to support

  2010. you.

  2011. Somebody

  2012. else would

  2013. say,

  2014. we can't

  2015. afford it

  2016. at all.

  2017. That's

  2018. cool.

  2019. You can

  2020. have it.

  2021. So what

  2022. it shows

  2023. is money

  2024. and success

  2025. was not

  2026. his God.

  2027. He knew

  2028. there was

  2029. something

  2030. more

  2031. important

  2032. with

  2033. that.

  2034. So we

  2035. need to

  2036. be just

  2037. tactful

  2038. on how

  2039. we spend

  2040. our money

  2041. and how

  2042. we use

  2043. it.

  2044. And so

  2045. two pastors

  2046. that do

  2047. this,

  2048. one is

  2049. John

  2050. Piper,

  2051. but the

  2052. other one

  2053. is John

  2054. MacArthur.

  2055. They both

  2056. don't take

  2057. any money

  2058. from the

  2059. hundreds of

  2060. books that

  2061. they write.

  2062. They don't

  2063. do that.

  2064. They don't

  2065. charge

  2066. out the

  2067. wazoo just

  2068. to show

  2069. this isn't

  2070. why we're

  2071. doing this.

  2072. And the

  2073. guy who

  2074. wrote that,

  2075. Randy Alcorn,

  2076. wrote that

  2077. book I had

  2078. over here.

  2079. A while

  2080. back,

  2081. someone accused

  2082. him of

  2083. trying to

  2084. make a lot

  2085. of money

  2086. off the

  2087. books he

  2088. was selling.

  2089. He was

  2090. like,

  2091. really?

  2092. Okay.

  2093. I was

  2094. giving all

  2095. of this.

  2096. So all

  2097. his money

  2098. also goes

  2099. to other

  2100. ministries

  2101. and things.

  2102. He doesn't

  2103. get one

  2104. dime for

  2105. his books.

  2106. So those

  2107. are just,

  2108. we just

  2109. need to be

  2110. deliberate and

  2111. clear about

  2112. why we're

  2113. spending money.

  2114. And here's

  2115. an analogy

  2116. I had about

  2117. possessions that

  2118. I read from

  2119. Randy Alcorn.

  2120. Imagine that

  2121. you were from

  2122. another country,

  2123. Rispick,

  2124. England,

  2125. and you

  2126. came to

  2127. America on

  2128. a visa to

  2129. work here.

  2130. And you're

  2131. just going to

  2132. be a temporary

  2133. residence,

  2134. right?

  2135. Like America

  2136. is really

  2137. not your

  2138. homeland.

  2139. And you're

  2140. going to work

  2141. for this

  2142. company.

  2143. You really

  2144. don't know

  2145. how long

  2146. they're going

  2147. to have you

  2148. there.

  2149. It's just

  2150. a question

  2151. mark.

  2152. So,

  2153. when I

  2154. tell you,

  2155. if you

  2156. spend your

  2157. money here,

  2158. you can't

  2159. take anything

  2160. you bought

  2161. back to

  2162. England with

  2163. you.

  2164. You only

  2165. can wire

  2166. money to

  2167. England.

  2168. So,

  2169. if that

  2170. was true,

  2171. you would

  2172. be absolutely

  2173. foolish to

  2174. spend all

  2175. your money

  2176. here.

  2177. Because you

  2178. couldn't send

  2179. any of it

  2180. back to your

  2181. wife and

  2182. family that

  2183. was there,

  2184. back in

  2185. England.

  2186. You would

  2187. just waste

  2188. your money.

  2189. But you

  2190. would constantly.

  2191. You would

  2192. probably live

  2193. in a very

  2194. low-income

  2195. place,

  2196. just kind

  2197. of just get

  2198. by,

  2199. you're

  2200. going to

  2201. live it

  2202. up.

  2203. Because you'd

  2204. want to

  2205. wire all

  2206. your money

  2207. back to

  2208. England where

  2209. it would

  2210. last.

  2211. That's a

  2212. great analogy

  2213. of our

  2214. spiritual lives.

  2215. It's stupid.

  2216. We're not

  2217. going to

  2218. stay here.

  2219. This isn't

  2220. our home.

  2221. It's like,

  2222. let's invest

  2223. in eternity.

  2224. So,

  2225. scripture gives

  2226. us principles

  2227. in which we

  2228. can evaluate

  2229. decisions like

  2230. that.

  2231. So,

  2232. okay,

  2233. that's money

  2234. and possessions.

  2235. And that's

  2236. such a huge

  2237. conversation.

  2238. So you might

  2239. ask,

  2240. what do I

  2241. do with my

  2242. two homes?

  2243. I've got

  2244. one here and

  2245. I've got

  2246. one in the

  2247. lake.

  2248. What do I

  2249. do?

  2250. Is that

  2251. evil for

  2252. me to have

  2253. that?

  2254. And the

  2255. right question

  2256. is not

  2257. that.

  2258. It's to

  2259. ask,

  2260. do I

  2261. really need

  2262. both homes

  2263. or how

  2264. am I going

  2265. to use

  2266. that lake

  2267. house for

  2268. the kingdom

  2269. of God?

  2270. How can I

  2271. glorify God

  2272. with that

  2273. house that

  2274. I have?

  2275. And it's

  2276. funny to see

  2277. how simple

  2278. we really

  2279. are.

  2280. We can

  2281. really

  2282. trick

  2283. ourselves.

  2284. I'll invite

  2285. the youth

  2286. ministry

  2287. once a

  2288. year to

  2289. swim.

  2290. What do

  2291. you think?

  2292. Yeah,

  2293. great job.

  2294. That doesn't

  2295. justify your

  2296. house.

  2297. I'm sorry.

  2298. You need to

  2299. be able to

  2300. use it for

  2301. the kingdom.

  2302. And so

  2303. that's the

  2304. question you

  2305. need to

  2306. ask.

  2307. How can I

  2308. glorify God

  2309. with this

  2310. purchase or

  2311. what I

  2312. have?

  2313. How can I

  2314. do that?

  2315. And if

  2316. you're really

  2317. being sensitive

  2318. to the

  2319. spirit,

  2320. he'll tell

  2321. you like

  2322. yes or

  2323. no,

  2324. but someone

  2325. else can

  2326. come up

  2327. and say

  2328. that's evil

  2329. for you

  2330. to have

  2331. that.

  2332. I actually

  2333. have a

  2334. friend that

  2335. a few

  2336. people here

  2337. know.

  2338. He supports

  2339. me in

  2340. ministry.

  2341. His name

  2342. is Jason

  2343. and he's

  2344. a dentist

  2345. from

  2346. Pauwassee

  2347. up in the

  2348. mountains.

  2349. He actually

  2350. went here.

  2351. He was in

  2352. the Corps.

  2353. I think he

  2354. was in

  2355. Sigma Chi.

  2356. He actually

  2357. married a

  2358. KD.

  2359. They both

  2360. support me

  2361. here.

  2362. It's pretty

  2363. funny.

  2364. But for a

  2365. while,

  2366. I could tell

  2367. when I first

  2368. met him years

  2369. ago,

  2370. this guy

  2371. loves the

  2372. Lord,

  2373. but he

  2374. just has

  2375. some

  2376. pumped up

  2377. theology

  2378. on finances

  2379. and wealth.

  2380. He's more

  2381. like,

  2382. I'm going to

  2383. build a big

  2384. barn and

  2385. just enjoy it

  2386. and God's

  2387. going to

  2388. give it to

  2389. me.

  2390. I knew

  2391. that his

  2392. heart was

  2393. right.

  2394. So eventually

  2395. he read a

  2396. book by

  2397. Randy Alcorn

  2398. and he was

  2399. like,

  2400. man,

  2401. this is stupid.

  2402. I don't

  2403. want to build

  2404. up my

  2405. kingdom here.

  2406. I want to

  2407. invest in

  2408. eternity.

  2409. He sold

  2410. his lake

  2411. house.

  2412. He sold

  2413. one or two

  2414. crazy cars

  2415. he had.

  2416. He just

  2417. wants to

  2418. give to the

  2419. kingdom now.

  2420. He has such

  2421. a giving

  2422. heart.

  2423. He even

  2424. tells me,

  2425. anybody you

  2426. know that's

  2427. living on

  2428. Denise

  2429. support,

  2430. let me

  2431. know.

  2432. I want to

  2433. support him.

  2434. He supports

  2435. a lot of

  2436. people other

  2437. than me,

  2438. but we don't

  2439. need that

  2440. stuff.

  2441. I don't

  2442. need two

  2443. houses.

  2444. That's just

  2445. the way he

  2446. manifested the

  2447. gospel in

  2448. that reality.

  2449. moving on

  2450. really fast.

  2451. Sorry,

  2452. this end is

  2453. just kind

  2454. of rocky,

  2455. but media,

  2456. music,

  2457. television.

  2458. Let's talk

  2459. about that

  2460. just for a

  2461. minute before

  2462. we kind

  2463. of close.

  2464. We are

  2465. surrounded

  2466. with so

  2467. many things

  2468. that we

  2469. can just

  2470. pretty much

  2471. amuse

  2472. ourselves to

  2473. death.

  2474. C.S.

  2475. Lewis argued

  2476. that our

  2477. capacity for

  2478. real joy has

  2479. been shriveled

  2480. to nothing.

  2481. he said

  2482. this,

  2483. if we

  2484. see that

  2485. our Lord

  2486. finds our

  2487. desires too

  2488. strong,

  2489. it is not

  2490. said that,

  2491. that God

  2492. does not

  2493. find our

  2494. desires too

  2495. strong,

  2496. but too

  2497. weak.

  2498. And he

  2499. talks about

  2500. how,

  2501. I mean,

  2502. this is a

  2503. famous quote,

  2504. we are

  2505. half-hearted

  2506. creatures

  2507. fooling

  2508. about

  2509. with

  2510. drink

  2511. and

  2512. sex

  2513. and

  2514. ambition

  2515. when

  2516. infinite

  2517. joy

  2518. is

  2519. offered

  2520. us

  2521. like

  2522. an

  2523. ignorant

  2524. child

  2525. who

  2526. just

  2527. goes on

  2528. making

  2529. mud pies

  2530. in the

  2531. slum

  2532. because

  2533. they

  2534. cannot

  2535. imagine

  2536. what is

  2537. meant by

  2538. an offer

  2539. at a

  2540. holiday

  2541. at the

  2542. sea.

  2543. We are

  2544. far too

  2545. easily

  2546. pleased.

  2547. So,

  2548. we have

  2549. so many

  2550. little

  2551. things

  2552. on our

  2553. phones

  2554. and

  2555. internet

  2556. and TV

  2557. that we

  2558. can just

  2559. pretty much

  2560. amuse

  2561. ourselves

  2562. to death.

  2563. And those

  2564. are really,

  2565. really puny

  2566. joys,

  2567. to be honest.

  2568. They're there

  2569. for a minute

  2570. and they're

  2571. gone.

  2572. And if we

  2573. didn't have

  2574. this mass

  2575. media around

  2576. us,

  2577. we would

  2578. be bored

  2579. to death.

  2580. We would

  2581. just hate

  2582. life.

  2583. But the

  2584. thing is,

  2585. there's so

  2586. many new

  2587. things out

  2588. there,

  2589. you can

  2590. go from

  2591. one new

  2592. thing

  2593. to the

  2594. other.

  2595. Pretty

  2596. much

  2597. for the

  2598. rest

  2599. of your

  2600. life,

  2601. probably,

  2602. and just

  2603. be amused.

  2604. So,

  2605. begin praying

  2606. against this

  2607. idea that I

  2608. want life

  2609. to be fun

  2610. and cool.

  2611. What you

  2612. really want

  2613. is for life

  2614. to be

  2615. meaningful

  2616. and rich

  2617. and purposeful

  2618. in what you

  2619. do in life

  2620. and what

  2621. you give

  2622. your life

  2623. to and

  2624. live for

  2625. those things

  2626. and life

  2627. changing

  2628. type things.

  2629. So,

  2630. here's

  2631. something that

  2632. I'm not ashamed

  2633. to say this

  2634. I guess now,

  2635. but that

  2636. Mark Driscoll

  2637. kind of does

  2638. to kind of

  2639. deal with.

  2640. media

  2641. and things

  2642. like that

  2643. and a lot

  2644. of things.

  2645. He says

  2646. that you

  2647. either receive,

  2648. reject,

  2649. or redeem

  2650. things

  2651. that you

  2652. come in

  2653. contact

  2654. with.

  2655. Number one,

  2656. receive.

  2657. There's many

  2658. things in

  2659. culture

  2660. and around

  2661. us that

  2662. we can

  2663. enjoy

  2664. through the

  2665. glory of

  2666. God.

  2667. It's clean,

  2668. it's not

  2669. simple,

  2670. and we

  2671. can delight

  2672. in those

  2673. things

  2674. and see

  2675. the beauty

  2676. of God

  2677. and what

  2678. we use

  2679. and delight

  2680. in those

  2681. things.

  2682. To his

  2683. glory,

  2684. that's

  2685. what

  2686. Calvin

  2687. said

  2688. a minute

  2689. ago.

  2690. The second

  2691. thing is

  2692. reject

  2693. things.

  2694. There's

  2695. many

  2696. things

  2697. that

  2698. are

  2699. blatantly

  2700. simple

  2701. that you

  2702. cannot

  2703. do to

  2704. the glory

  2705. of God

  2706. no matter

  2707. what.

  2708. and media

  2709. intended

  2710. to glorify

  2711. sin

  2712. and the

  2713. worldly

  2714. way of

  2715. thinking

  2716. is not

  2717. something

  2718. you can

  2719. redeem

  2720. or fix.

  2721. There's

  2722. some

  2723. of every

  2724. kind of

  2725. genre

  2726. of music.

  2727. There's

  2728. rock,

  2729. there's

  2730. country,

  2731. there's

  2732. rap,

  2733. there's

  2734. some

  2735. lyrics in

  2736. those that

  2737. some of

  2738. you guys

  2739. just need

  2740. to throw

  2741. away.

  2742. There's

  2743. nothing

  2744. you can

  2745. redeem

  2746. about

  2747. them.

  2748. They're

  2749. very

  2750. blatantly

  2751. sinful

  2752. about

  2753. sex

  2754. and

  2755. unmarital

  2756. sex,

  2757. sleeping

  2758. around,

  2759. drugs,

  2760. partying,

  2761. loose life.

  2762. And that's

  2763. what you

  2764. don't need

  2765. to...

  2766. Music

  2767. is powerful.

  2768. If you

  2769. listen to

  2770. that stuff

  2771. long enough,

  2772. it'll affect

  2773. your mind.

  2774. I promise.

  2775. It's been

  2776. proven.

  2777. And there's

  2778. just some

  2779. things that

  2780. you can't

  2781. watch on

  2782. TV.

  2783. I don't

  2784. care what

  2785. you say.

  2786. You can't

  2787. watch the

  2788. hangover

  2789. of the

  2790. glory of

  2791. God.

  2792. It's just

  2793. like that.

  2794. You can't

  2795. make movies

  2796. like that,

  2797. like a

  2798. God

  2799. glorifying

  2800. king.

  2801. Apart from

  2802. just learning

  2803. how lost

  2804. and sinful

  2805. man is,

  2806. which you

  2807. just got to

  2808. look into

  2809. yourself to

  2810. see that.

  2811. You don't

  2812. need to

  2813. watch a

  2814. movie.

  2815. So some

  2816. of us

  2817. need to

  2818. go home

  2819. and kind

  2820. of cleanse

  2821. some of

  2822. the stuff

  2823. out of

  2824. our DVD

  2825. and music

  2826. collection.

  2827. This is

  2828. not glorifying

  2829. to God.

  2830. So Paul

  2831. said in

  2832. 1 Corinthians

  2833. 10,

  2834. whether you

  2835. eat or

  2836. drink or

  2837. whatever you

  2838. do,

  2839. do it

  2840. all for

  2841. the glory

  2842. of God.

  2843. Do it

  2844. all,

  2845. even the

  2846. smallest

  2847. things.

  2848. And,

  2849. you know,

  2850. when it

  2851. comes to

  2852. TV,

  2853. it's just

  2854. a choice

  2855. of yours,

  2856. okay?

  2857. This is just

  2858. something that

  2859. we kind of

  2860. do at our

  2861. house,

  2862. me and

  2863. Josh and

  2864. John.

  2865. We don't

  2866. have cable,

  2867. we don't

  2868. have satellite,

  2869. because I've

  2870. found in my

  2871. personal life

  2872. that it

  2873. sucks me

  2874. in.

  2875. Like,

  2876. I will spend

  2877. so much

  2878. time watching

  2879. things,

  2880. and I

  2881. won't be

  2882. spending my

  2883. life on

  2884. what really

  2885. matters at

  2886. all.

  2887. I'll just

  2888. be,

  2889. you know,

  2890. clearing my

  2891. time away.

  2892. And I'll

  2893. just be

  2894. obsessed,

  2895. just amusing

  2896. myself to

  2897. the grave.

  2898. So I've

  2899. chosen not to

  2900. have that.

  2901. I don't

  2902. ever want

  2903. that.

  2904. I have a

  2905. DVD player,

  2906. and I do

  2907. watch movies,

  2908. but occasionally

  2909. there's something

  2910. you want to

  2911. watch,

  2912. a game,

  2913. you can go

  2914. somewhere else

  2915. and watch it,

  2916. or you can

  2917. watch it on

  2918. the internet.

  2919. But I just

  2920. know that I

  2921. can't handle it.

  2922. I know that

  2923. it's too much

  2924. for me.

  2925. Like Paul said,

  2926. things are

  2927. lawful,

  2928. but not all

  2929. things are

  2930. going to be

  2931. beneficial to

  2932. me.

  2933. I can't

  2934. handle it.

  2935. And it's

  2936. proven.

  2937. When I go

  2938. home to my

  2939. parents'

  2940. house,

  2941. like,

  2942. turn on

  2943. TV and

  2944. watch Walker

  2945. Texas Ranger

  2946. or something,

  2947. and I'm

  2948. like,

  2949. I threw

  2950. this out.

  2951. I thought

  2952. I'd

  2953. throw that

  2954. out there.

  2955. I love

  2956. it when he

  2957. gets surrounded

  2958. by like 10

  2959. dudes,

  2960. and I'm

  2961. like,

  2962. so we

  2963. got receive,

  2964. reject,

  2965. or redeem.

  2966. Okay?

  2967. Redeem is the

  2968. last one.

  2969. So there

  2970. are a lot

  2971. of things in

  2972. fallen culture

  2973. that they

  2974. have stolen

  2975. and perverted

  2976. that were not

  2977. bad things

  2978. at all.

  2979. So believers

  2980. need to take

  2981. those things

  2982. and show

  2983. them the

  2984. world and

  2985. what was

  2986. their intended

  2987. purpose,

  2988. what God

  2989. created them

  2990. for just

  2991. the other

  2992. day.

  2993. Like,

  2994. I like

  2995. rock,

  2996. you know,

  2997. different kinds

  2998. of rock.

  2999. There's a lot

  3000. of it I have

  3001. to trash

  3002. because it's

  3003. not beneficial

  3004. at all.

  3005. But Nickelback,

  3006. the rock band

  3007. Nickelback,

  3008. has a song

  3009. called

  3010. It's the

  3011. Damage Your

  3012. Last Day.

  3013. I listened to

  3014. it the other

  3015. day and it

  3016. was like

  3017. solid.

  3018. I couldn't

  3019. believe it.

  3020. These guys

  3021. probably aren't

  3022. believers,

  3023. I'm pretty sure.

  3024. And they're

  3025. like singing

  3026. a song that

  3027. is exactly

  3028. a perspective

  3029. of what a

  3030. believer should

  3031. have.

  3032. And so,

  3033. you know,

  3034. you can redeem

  3035. them.

  3036. That's what

  3037. this really

  3038. means.

  3039. This is what

  3040. these lyrics

  3041. really mean.

  3042. So,

  3043. there's all

  3044. kind of

  3045. questions I

  3046. know,

  3047. but if it's

  3048. controlling you

  3049. and infiltrating

  3050. your mind

  3051. and making

  3052. you think

  3053. worldly and

  3054. sinful and

  3055. pulling you

  3056. away from

  3057. God,

  3058. like,

  3059. move away

  3060. from it.

  3061. It's really,

  3062. really tricky.

  3063. It takes time

  3064. to learn how

  3065. to do.

  3066. And none

  3067. of us

  3068. do it

  3069. perfectly.

  3070. But,

  3071. last thing

  3072. we'll look

  3073. at,

  3074. look at

  3075. 1 John

    1 John 5 chapter mention

  3076. chapter 5

  3077. real fast.

  3078. Let's read

  3079. this.

  3080. It's a good

  3081. summation of

  3082. what we've

  3083. been talking

  3084. about.

  3085. 1 John

    1 John 5:3

  3086. chapter 5

  3087. verse 3.

  3088. This sums

  3089. up all

  3090. we've been

  3091. talking about.

  3092. For this

  3093. is the love

  3094. of God

  3095. that we

  3096. keep His

  3097. commandments,

  3098. like we

  3099. just said.

  3100. And His

  3101. commandments

  3102. are not

  3103. burdensome.

  3104. And why

  3105. are they not

  3106. burdensome?

  3107. It's because

  3108. we love

  3109. Him.

  3110. It's our

  3111. joy to

  3112. follow Him.

  3113. For

  3114. everyone who

  3115. has been

  3116. born of

  3117. God

  3118. overcomes

  3119. the world.

  3120. And this

  3121. is the

  3122. victory that

  3123. has overcome

  3124. the world,

  3125. our faith.

  3126. Who is it

  3127. that overcomes

  3128. the world

  3129. except the

  3130. one who

  3131. believes that

  3132. Jesus is the

  3133. Son of God?

  3134. So,

  3135. because of

  3136. Christ,

  3137. we can,

  3138. like,

  3139. walk through

  3140. this world

  3141. and be

  3142. in it

  3143. and not

  3144. of it,

  3145. not reject

  3146. it or not

  3147. become like

  3148. it,

  3149. but we can

  3150. actually live

  3151. here for

  3152. the glory

  3153. of God

  3154. and make

  3155. an impact

  3156. for His

  3157. kingdom

  3158. here.

  3159. And if we

  3160. are born

  3161. of God,

  3162. we will

  3163. overcome.

  3164. There's a

  3165. promise there.

  3166. So,

  3167. let it be

  3168. said that

  3169. we went

  3170. through this

  3171. life and

  3172. weren't

  3173. lured and

  3174. we don't

  3175. become like

  3176. the water

  3177. around us,

  3178. but we

  3179. impact it

  3180. for the

  3181. glory of

  3182. God.

  3183. I know

  3184. it's kind

  3185. of late,

  3186. guys.

  3187. We'll kind

  3188. of,

  3189. I think we

  3190. should respond

  3191. in song.

  3192. We started

  3193. late tonight,

  3194. but this

  3195. definitely warrants

  3196. more conversation

  3197. on now,

  3198. so we just

  3199. kind of pop

  3200. the lid and

  3201. kind of give it

  3202. to you tonight.

  3203. But talk to

  3204. John,

  3205. talk to me,

  3206. Dan,

  3207. anybody else

  3208. that's here,

  3209. but let's just

  3210. kind of close in

  3211. prayer and then

  3212. we'll have Alex

  3213. come up and

  3214. lead us in

  3215. song.

  3216. Father,

  3217. I'm overwhelmed

  3218. at this topic

  3219. and I know

  3220. there's so

  3221. many things

  3222. in my life

  3223. that I need

  3224. to make war

  3225. on and

  3226. take out

  3227. of my

  3228. life.

  3229. Lord,

  3230. may I never

  3231. be so

  3232. comfortable

  3233. to think

  3234. that everything

  3235. that I have

  3236. or ways

  3237. that I spend

  3238. my money

  3239. that I'm

  3240. beyond

  3241. reproach.

  3242. I want

  3243. to live a

  3244. life that does

  3245. reflect that my

  3246. treasure is in

  3247. you and not in

  3248. things I have

  3249. or things

  3250. that I

  3251. delight in

  3252. every day

  3253. but in

  3254. you and

  3255. everything is

  3256. a springboard

  3257. to worship

  3258. and leads me

  3259. to thanksgiving

  3260. for what

  3261. you've done

  3262. and,

  3263. Lord,

  3264. may Christ

  3265. be our

  3266. ultimate

  3267. treasure.

  3268. He's the

  3269. only thing

  3270. worth living

  3271. for.

  3272. He's completely

  3273. worthy.

  3274. He can

  3275. satisfy our

  3276. soul and

  3277. He's the

  3278. one thing

  3279. that can't

  3280. be taken

  3281. away from

  3282. us.

  3283. Everything

  3284. else that

  3285. we live

  3286. for will

  3287. be taken

  3288. away from

  3289. us,

  3290. but Christ

  3291. cannot be

  3292. and I

  3293. pray that

  3294. we would

  3295. live for

  3296. Him and

  3297. die for

  3298. Him.

  3299. We would

  3300. be satisfied

  3301. in Him and

  3302. He would

  3303. allow us to

  3304. navigate this

  3305. world and

  3306. not be

  3307. pulled into

  3308. its sinful

  3309. ideologies and

  3310. ways of

  3311. thinking,

  3312. that we

  3313. would be

  3314. strangers and

  3315. pilgrims and

  3316. travelers here

  3317. heading towards

  3318. eternity and

  3319. glorify you

  3320. in our

  3321. decisions and

  3322. what we

  3323. do.

  3324. Lord, I

  3325. pray that

  3326. this has

  3327. been a

  3328. honoring to

  3329. you and

  3330. if I've

  3331. erred, I

  3332. pray that

  3333. you would

  3334. show me.

  3335. I'm pretty

  3336. convinced of

  3337. what your

  3338. word says.

  3339. Lord, we

  3340. love you to

  3341. help us to

  3342. apply to

  3343. this.

  3344. If we

  3345. leave here

  3346. and don't

  3347. take anything,
