  1. If you guys ever played on a really good sports team, let's say basketball for instance, sometimes you know that you get up by a really, really large margin, let's say 50 points.

  2. And when that happens, the first stream comes out and the second stream goes in. And that's kind of the way that I feel this morning.

  3. Romans seven, it was a neck and neck game. We're going back and forth, the flesh and the sin versus the law of God.

  4. And then we got the old man versus the new man. And of course, Romans eight, it seems like it kind of go up by like 50 and they put the subs in.

  5. So consider myself the second stream. In light of that, let's just pray to the Lord for making this substitution.

  6. Father, we thank you so much that Christ is real. Christ is alive. Christ is in us who know him.

  7. God, we pray that your word would just be opened up to us this morning in a great and marvelous way.

  8. We pray that it would just change the way that we think, the way that we live our lives, Lord God, so that you would receive more glory through us.

  9. And we would, Father, just have the right parts that are filled with joy.

  10. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  11. In psychology, I learned that you tend to remember the first thing and the last thing that you hear from somebody more than all the middle stuff.

  12. So I just want to start with kind of the general outline of Romans eight versus one through four, just so you guys can have a have the structure in your mind as we're going through it.

  13. I'm only really teaching. I'm supposed to really only teach three and four because Nathan taught one and two a couple of weeks ago.

  14. But we're going to we're going to go through all of it really briefly and just focus in on the last two especially.

  15. So and I have these kind of, I guess, segmented by ours.

  16. All the all the names of these things start with our.

  17. So the first verse is really the reality that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.

  18. OK, it's about our need for righteousness.

  19. Verse two is the reason why we have no condemnation.

  20. And the buzzword there is justification.

  21. And it deals with how God provided us with his righteousness.

  22. OK, verse three.

  23. Is the route.

  24. That God took to alleviate from us this condemnation.

  25. And the buzzword is substitution.

  26. Route and substitution.

  27. And it really has to do with Christ being our righteous sacrifice.

  28. And then fourthly.

  29. It's the result.

  30. This is verse four.

  31. Of our salvation and Christ substitutionary work on our behalf.

  32. And the key word here is sanctification.

  33. And this is going to be talking about our demonstration of God's righteousness.

  34. OK, so these are massive topics that obviously I'm not going to be able to touch fully.

  35. This is a very abridged version of what these things actually deal with.

  36. It's this is I mean, literally the whole scripture is kind of being summarized in these four verses.

  37. So you can pretty much go anywhere to teach this.

  38. But I'm going to try to stay in Romans as much as possible today.

  39. Just so you guys aren't flipping all over the place.

  40. Let's begin with a review of verses one and two.

  41. Let's just read the passage to start with.

  42. OK, this is Romans eight, one through four.

  43. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  44. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

  45. For what the law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did.

  46. Sending his own son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh.

  47. In order that we that the requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the spirit.

  48. OK, so verses one one through four here, it really functions as a summary of the previous seven chapters.

  49. It's kind of a hinge point.

  50. OK, so it's the previous seven chapters, but it's also the subsequent thirty five verses to follow in chapter eight.

  51. It's really a summary of all that's all that that's going on.

  52. And again, the first buzzword that we had was the reality of no condemnation.

  53. This is verse one.

  54. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  55. We see that earlier in the text in Romans in verses 18 through really chapter 118 through verses 20 in chapter three.

  56. Paul is talking about condemnation.

  57. And the reality of man is guilty before a holy God who was also a judge.

  58. Of the worst kind of treason.

  59. OK, man is guilty of treason against God.

  60. And treason is a violation of a violation of allegiance to one sovereign or a betrayal.

  61. I like this definition better.

  62. A betrayal of a trust or confidence.

  63. It's a breach of faith.

  64. We have committed treason against God.

  65. And with treason, commonly there's no tolerance, right?

  66. Crimes often result in the death penalty.

  67. There's been a recent thing, I think, happening in the past couple of years.

  68. I just learned about this recently from Josh, in fact.

  69. A lot of you guys in the military probably heard about this WikiLeaks thing.

  70. It's a young, private first class soldier.

  71. A couple of years ago stole a lot of confidential documents and some video footage from the government.

  72. And somehow he posted it on the Internet for anyone and everyone to see.

  73. I mean, that's enemies and friends alike.

  74. And some of the content was very disturbing.

  75. It exposed actually a mission that had gone wrong overseas.

  76. And needless to say, the man was arrested and is actually awaiting trial and potentially the death penalty.

  77. This is just a young man who put some stuff on the Internet.

  78. But the severity of the crime is determined by the scale of the offense.

  79. The severity of the crime is determined by the scale of the offense.

  80. So, you slap your brother or sister on the face, you get time out.

  81. You slap the president, you get time in jail.

  82. There's a difference between slapping your brother and slapping the president.

  83. That's because the scale of offense is greater.

  84. If we betray one's country, we get death.

  85. If we betray God, we get death and hell.

  86. It's greater.

  87. Understand in the present predicament of sinners.

  88. They are under the condemnation of the King of Kings.

  89. Jesus, therefore, says rightly in Matthew 10, 28,

  90. Don't fear those who kill the body, but are unable to kill the soul.

  91. Rather, fear Him who is able to send both soul and body into hell.

  92. There's a reverence that God was speaking up there.

  93. And so you may ask, what have we done to deserve condemnation?

  94. What are we guilty of before God?

  95. That would sentence us to death and then eventually hell?

  96. Turn to Romans 1.

  97. Again, beginning in verse 18, He's dealing with this.

  98. Going through chapter 3, verse 20.

  99. What have we done?

  100. Read verse 18 with me.

  101. For the wrath of God, that's the condemnation, is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness

  102. and all unrighteousness of men who do what?

  103. Who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.

  104. Then skip down to verses 21 through 23.

  105. For even though they knew about God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks,

  106. but they became futile in their speculations and their foolish heart was darkened.

  107. Professing to be wise, they became fools.

  108. And they exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God

  109. for an image in the form of corruptible man

  110. and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures.

  111. And you might substitute anything there.

  112. Any false god or idol that you may serve.

  113. A lifestyle, a status, an image, a relationship, etc.

  114. They worship and serve and men worship and serve.

  115. And we used to worship and serve things that were not God.

  116. That's treason.

  117. That's betrayal of God.

  118. Look at verses 24 and 25.

  119. Therefore, God gave them over in the lust of their hearts to impurity.

  120. That their bodies might be dishonored among them.

  121. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie.

  122. And they worship and served the creature rather than the creator.

  123. Okay?

  124. Just a note.

  125. Immorality is normal as a symptom of depravity.

  126. And normally, within a certain society or a certain country or a certain region

  127. where you have gross immorality or growing immorality,

  128. normally that means soon the destruction of that society or nation or whatever.

  129. This happened to Rome a long time ago.

  130. There was just a growing homosexuality, a growing heterosexual sin throughout the region.

  131. It was corrupting everybody from the inside out.

  132. And Rome fell from the inside out.

  133. So immorality is a normal symptom of depravity.

  134. So imagine what condition our society and our country is in today.

  135. Furthermore, look at 28 through 32.

  136. Now, he's kind of speaking, okay?

  137. He's writing to the church, so he's speaking to Christians.

  138. But these things that he's saying are all, or once were all, true of us.

  139. This is going to help us compare what Christ has done better.

  140. So look at verses 28 through 32.

  141. And just as they did not see fit, this is unbelievers,

  142. as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer,

  143. God gave them over to a depraved mind to do those things that are not proper.

  144. What things are not proper?

  145. Being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil,

  146. full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice.

  147. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful,

  148. inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding,

  149. and trustworthy, and loving, and merciful.

  150. And although they know the ordinance or the commandment of God,

  151. that those who practice such things are worthy of death,

  152. they not only do the same,

  153. but they also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

  154. So that's a laundry list of indictment against us.

  155. And that's just chapter 1.

  156. This is the condemnation of God that is coming upon people

  157. that this is characteristic of.

  158. But for those who are in Christ Jesus,

  159. there is no condemnation.

  160. So we were all once these things.

  161. And yet there's no condemnation.

  162. There's no condemnation at all.

  163. No penalty to be paid.

  164. No judgment to fear.

  165. No hell to suffer.

  166. All of our guilt absolved.

  167. So the question then becomes,

  168. well, how do I get in Christ, right?

  169. Because the first verse of our text says

  170. that those that are in Christ have no condemnation.

  171. How do I get in Christ?

  172. That's the beauty of verse 2.

  173. He rescues you by the power of the gospel.

  174. Let's read it.

  175. For the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus

  176. has set you free

  177. from the law of sin and death.

  178. Has set you free.

  179. What does that imply?

  180. That you were once in bondage to something, right?

  181. You were freed from something.

  182. You were incarcerated in something.

  183. Now you're freed from something.

  184. So again, the second key word was justification.

  185. This is the reason why condemnation

  186. is no longer applied to us.

  187. Man is justified,

  188. which really means to be declared innocent

  189. or to be holy or to be blameless,

  190. by faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  191. That's how.

  192. Before Christ saved you,

  193. you were held in captivity to the law,

  194. it says,

  195. of sin and of death.

  196. And in many ways,

  197. this refers to the principle of sin

  198. that we see Paul struggling with

  199. in chapter 7,

  200. verses 23 and 24.

  201. Let's read that.

  202. It's regarding a principle.

  203. He says,

  204. but I see a different law

  205. in the members of my body,

  206. waging war against the law of my mind

  207. and making me a prisoner

  208. of the law of sin,

  209. which is in my members.

  210. So something's inside of Paul.

  211. Then he says,

  212. wretched man that I am,

  213. he cries out,

  214. who will set me free

  215. from the body of this death?

  216. So something was inside of Paul.

  217. Something was true of Paul

  218. that he hated,

  219. that he despised.

  220. It was a principle

  221. that was inside of him.

  222. This thing that he couldn't

  223. rid himself of in this life.

  224. And they that are not in Christ

  225. are in the devil.

  226. That's a strong comparison.

  227. But they that are not in Christ

  228. are in the devil.

  229. What does that mean?

  230. John 8, 44.

  231. Jesus himself

  232. says to the Pharisees,

  233. you are of your father,

  234. the devil.

  235. In Ephesians 2, 3,

  236. Paul says

  237. that we are children of wrath.

  238. And in 1 John 3, 10,

  239. John says,

  240. you are children of the devil.

  241. That's how he describes

  242. the unbelieving,

  243. the unregenerate.

  244. Children of the devil.

  245. And not being in Christ,

  246. they have not Christ in them.

  247. And therefore,

  248. no power to resist sin

  249. or combat Satan.

  250. They are slaves of sin.

  251. They are entirely governed

  252. and influenced

  253. in every decision

  254. by their fallen nature.

  255. This is who you once were.

  256. This is who some of you

  257. may still be.

  258. You are totally

  259. controlled by sin.

  260. There is nothing

  261. inside of you

  262. that is pleasing to God.

  263. You are filled with sin.

  264. One cannot escape

  265. what one is.

  266. Okay?

  267. If you are an ant,

  268. then you can only

  269. work with the faculties

  270. of an ant.

  271. If you are a lion,

  272. then you can only work

  273. with the faculties

  274. of a lion.

  275. If you are not in Christ,

  276. then you can only work

  277. with your fallen faculties.

  278. Meaning what?

  279. You can't please God.

  280. You can't please God.

  281. This is so important

  282. to understand.

  283. Okay?

  284. Romans 8 says that.

  285. We are going to get to that

  286. in a little while.

  287. That those who are

  288. not in Christ,

  289. who are not in the Spirit,

  290. cannot please God.

  291. Have no ability to.

  292. Now that means something.

  293. That puts people

  294. that try to work

  295. to be good,

  296. to get God's approval,

  297. in a very,

  298. very desperate place.

  299. because you can't

  300. earn God's favor.

  301. There's no outweighing

  302. the bad with the good.

  303. This is exactly

  304. what the truth

  305. of Scripture says.

  306. Just turn to Romans 8.

  307. I just want to see,

  308. I just want to read this

  309. with you.

  310. Romans 8.

  311. Those who are in the flesh

  312. cannot please God.

  313. So I'm not just making this up.

  314. This is truth from Scripture.

  315. If you are a Christian,

  316. however,

  317. you can certainly

  318. please God.

  319. Because there is now

  320. a new principle

  321. in you.

  322. The law of the Spirit

  323. of life in Christ Jesus,

  324. as our verse says.

  325. This is how the Gospel works,

  326. okay?

  327. By faith,

  328. a man believes

  329. that he has sinned

  330. against God.

  331. And is indeed

  332. in a state

  333. of just

  334. condemnation.

  335. So I sin

  336. against God,

  337. I recognize that,

  338. and I admit that,

  339. and I believe that.

  340. That God is not

  341. pleased with me,

  342. for me.

  343. Know this too,

  344. God never refuses

  345. or despises

  346. the man who is broken

  347. in spirit,

  348. and who is contrite

  349. in heart.

  350. Psalm 51.

  351. And therefore,

  352. God saves

  353. this poor man,

  354. God has saved you,

  355. being justified,

  356. made holy,

  357. right?

  358. As a gift

  359. by His grace,

  360. as a gift,

  361. that's a key word there,

  362. by His grace,

  363. through the redemption

  364. which is in Christ Jesus.

  365. And that's straight out

  366. of chapter 3,

  367. verse 24.

  368. And this person

  369. who's been saved

  370. has what's called

  371. positional righteousness.

  372. Positional righteousness.

  373. Meaning that if a man

  374. were to die

  375. the second after

  376. he were saved,

  377. and he had lived

  378. a life of constant sin,

  379. let's say that he was

  380. the worst of men,

  381. and he died

  382. one second after

  383. he was saved,

  384. he would still

  385. be seen by God

  386. as if he were as holy

  387. and as blameless

  388. as Christ.

  389. Positional righteousness

  390. is awesome.

  391. Holy and blameless

  392. before God,

  393. pure as Christ,

  394. and I did

  395. one second

  396. of good things

  397. and 45 years

  398. of sin.

  399. He would then

  400. be loved by God

  401. for the rest of eternity

  402. as a son

  403. because of this position.

  404. And he would not

  405. be condemned to hell

  406. as a sinner.

  407. And that is what it means

  408. to be justified.

  409. Now,

  410. you say,

  411. where is that

  412. in Scripture,

  413. right?

  414. That's an awesome

  415. reality.

  416. Where is that

  417. in Scripture?

  418. I want to read

  419. more about this.

  420. Luke 23,

  421. 39-43,

  422. is the thief

  423. on the cross.

  424. That's a great

  425. example of that.

  426. He was on the cross.

  427. He was literally

  428. nailed to the cross.

  429. And Christ

  430. gave him and said,

  431. today you will be

  432. with me in paradise.

  433. But I want to read you

  434. from Romans 5.

  435. Look at Romans 5.

  436. Just turn over

  437. one page.

  438. Another good example

  439. of this.

  440. Romans 5,

  441. 6-10.

  442. For while we were

  443. still helpless,

  444. at the right time,

  445. Christ died

  446. for the ungodly.

  447. God died

  448. for the Romans

  449. one people.

  450. For one will hardly

  451. die for a righteous man,

  452. though perhaps

  453. for a good man

  454. someone would dare

  455. even to die.

  456. But God

  457. demonstrates

  458. His own love

  459. toward us.

  460. And that while

  461. we were

  462. yet still

  463. sinners,

  464. wicked,

  465. evil,

  466. hating God,

  467. rebellious,

  468. Christ died

  469. for you.

  470. In your sin.

  471. Not when you

  472. cleaned yourself up

  473. and made yourself

  474. resentable,

  475. but in your sin,

  476. in the worst

  477. of the worst

  478. of the worst

  479. circumstances,

  480. when you were

  481. doing nothing

  482. but sin,

  483. when you were

  484. hating God

  485. and betraying Him

  486. with all the heart

  487. that you possibly could,

  488. that's when He

  489. died for you.

  490. much more

  491. than

  492. having now

  493. been justified

  494. by His blood,

  495. we shall be

  496. saved from the

  497. wrath of God,

  498. from condemnation

  499. through Christ.

  500. For if

  501. while we were

  502. enemies,

  503. we were reconciled

  504. to God

  505. through the death

  506. of His Son,

  507. much more than

  508. having been

  509. reconciled,

  510. we should be

  511. saved by His

  512. life.

  513. He's like,

  514. if God saves you

  515. while you were

  516. in your sin,

  517. while you were

  518. hating God,

  519. while you were

  520. rebellious,

  521. then certainly

  522. He's going to

  523. keep you

  524. once you've

  525. been given

  526. the Holy Spirit,

  527. once you've

  528. been transformed,

  529. once you've

  530. been given

  531. a love for

  532. Christ,

  533. there's nothing

  534. you can do

  535. to get out

  536. of that.

  537. It's awesome.

  538. Thirdly,

  539. verse 3,

  540. Romans 8,

  541. 3,

  542. says,

  543. for what the

  544. law could

  545. not do,

  546. weak as it

  547. was through

  548. the flesh,

  549. God did,

  550. by sending

  551. His own

  552. Son in the

  553. likeness of

  554. sinful flesh,

  555. and as an

  556. offering for

  557. sin,

  558. He condemned

  559. sin in

  560. the flesh.

  561. The key

  562. word here

  563. is substitution.

  564. And this

  565. is again,

  566. for the R

  567. words,

  568. the route

  569. that God

  570. took to

  571. alleviate us

  572. from condemnation.

  573. The route

  574. that God

  575. took to

  576. justify you.

  577. Substitution.

  578. Meaning,

  579. the righteous

  580. demands of

  581. the law,

  582. and the law

  583. does have

  584. demands,

  585. are satisfied

  586. in Christ,

  587. and thusly,

  588. in those

  589. who are in

  590. Christ.

  591. The law

  592. here,

  593. the word

  594. law,

  595. is the

  596. word nomos

  597. in the

  598. Greek,

  599. and it's

  600. a generic

  601. word meaning

  602. basically any

  603. law whatsoever.

  604. Any law

  605. whatsoever.

  606. So it's

  607. therefore anything

  608. that accurately

  609. reflects the

  610. moral character

  611. or moral

  612. nature of

  613. God.

  614. It can be

  615. as explicit,

  616. as obvious,

  617. as the

  618. Mosaic law,

  619. the Ten

  620. Commandments

  621. that were

  622. written in

  623. stone,

  624. or it can

  625. be as

  626. implicit as

  627. the moral

  628. law,

  629. written in

  630. and on the

  631. hearts of

  632. people,

  633. bearing

  634. conscious

  635. witness of

  636. God to

  637. even the

  638. indigenous

  639. tribesmen

  640. who's never

  641. heard the

  642. name of

  643. Jesus Christ

  644. or read a

  645. Bible.

  646. The law

  647. of God

  648. is still

  649. written on

  650. their hearts.

  651. That's

  652. Romans 2.15.

  653. Romans 2.1

  654. says no

  655. man is

  656. with excuse.

  657. No man's

  658. got an

  659. excuse before

  660. God.

  661. There's

  662. nothing you

  663. can say

  664. to him

  665. because

  666. there's

  667. moral laws

  668. written on

  669. your heart,

  670. which is

  671. why somebody

  672. in an

  673. indigenous

  674. tribe

  675. elsewhere

  676. still feels

  677. the same

  678. conviction

  679. for committing

  680. adultery

  681. or for

  682. killing

  683. somebody.

  684. It's the

  685. moral law

  686. of God

  687. written in

  688. the

  689. heart.

  690. So it

  691. can be

  692. explicit

  693. or it

  694. can be

  695. implicit.

  696. But all

  697. of that

  698. and everything

  699. in between

  700. is the

  701. law of

  702. God.

  703. And the

  704. law, as we

  705. see in our

  706. text,

  707. couldn't do

  708. something.

  709. It was

  710. incapable of

  711. doing

  712. something.

  713. What?

  714. If we read

  715. further on in

  716. verse 3,

  717. condemning sin

  718. is what it

  719. couldn't do.

  720. that's what

  721. God was

  722. sent for,

  723. right?

  724. That's why

  725. Christ was

  726. sent, was

  727. to condemn

  728. sin.

  729. The law

  730. cannot

  731. condemn or

  732. destroy or

  733. render powerless

  734. Sin.

  735. It can only

  736. expose it.

  737. Romans 7,

  738. 7, look over

  739. just one column.

  740. Paul says,

  741. what should we

  742. say then?

  743. Is the law

  744. sin?

  745. May it

  746. never be.

  747. On the

  748. contrary,

  749. I would

  750. not have

  751. come to

  752. no sin

  753. except

  754. through the

  755. law.

  756. The law.

  757. That's its

  758. function.

  759. It can only

  760. make a person

  761. privy to

  762. their offense

  763. of God's

  764. law.

  765. It can only

  766. make a person

  767. realize or

  768. understand that

  769. they have

  770. committed a

  771. transgression

  772. against God.

  773. That they're

  774. rebellious.

  775. purpose.

  776. That's what

  777. its purpose,

  778. its function

  779. is.

  780. It's to

  781. tutor you

  782. basically.

  783. To lead

  784. you into

  785. the knowledge

  786. of your

  787. sin.

  788. Look at

  789. Romans 3.

  790. The end

  791. of, I

  792. guess,

  793. 19 and

  794. 20.

  795. Look at

  796. this.

  797. Romans 3,

  798. 19 and

  799. 20.

  800. Now, we

  801. know that

  802. whatever the

  803. law says,

  804. it speaks

  805. to those

  806. who are

  807. under the

  808. law,

  809. that every

  810. mouth may

  811. be closed.

  812. So,

  813. everybody's

  814. mouth is

  815. shut up.

  816. And all

  817. the world

  818. may become

  819. accountable

  820. to God.

  821. Everybody

  822. is.

  823. Because by

  824. the works

  825. of the

  826. law,

  827. that means

  828. by trying

  829. to achieve

  830. God's

  831. favor

  832. through

  833. working

  834. or doing

  835. good works.

  836. So, by

  837. the works

  838. of the

  839. law, no

  840. flesh will

  841. be justified

  842. in his

  843. sight.

  844. For

  845. through

  846. the law

  847. comes

  848. the

  849. knowledge

  850. of sin.

  851. So,

  852. it's

  853. clear as

  854. day.

  855. Now, I

  856. need to

  857. make a

  858. point here.

  859. The

  860. problem is

  861. not with

  862. the law.

  863. The

  864. problem is

  865. with us.

  866. Okay?

  867. The

  868. verse says,

  869. weak as

  870. it was

  871. through the

  872. flesh.

  873. What the

  874. law could

  875. not do,

  876. weak as

  877. it was

  878. through the

  879. flesh.

  880. Okay?

  881. Our sin

  882. nature is

  883. the flesh.

  884. That's the

  885. issue.

  886. We are

  887. born with a

  888. predisposition

  889. towards sin

  890. and towards

  891. lawlessness.

  892. We hate,

  893. as sinners,

  894. the rigidity

  895. of the

  896. law.

  897. law.

  898. Because it

  899. feels

  900. incarcerating,

  901. doesn't it?

  902. All these

  903. do's and

  904. don'ts,

  905. all these

  906. things to

  907. do,

  908. all these

  909. things not

  910. to do,

  911. it feels

  912. incarcerating

  913. to us.

  914. We want

  915. to rebel

  916. against it

  917. and to be

  918. freed from

  919. its

  920. requirements.

  921. And when

  922. the unbelieving

  923. feel that

  924. way,

  925. it's simply

  926. the law

  927. doing what

  928. it's supposed

  929. to do.

  930. simply doing

  931. what it's

  932. supposed to

  933. do.

  934. This helps

  935. us very

  936. much in

  937. understanding

  938. why

  939. unbelievers

  940. hate the

  941. gospel.

  942. Why some

  943. of you

  944. hate the

  945. gospel.

  946. Why you

  947. hate hearing

  948. this.

  949. Why?

  950. Because the

  951. law exposes

  952. your failure

  953. to meet

  954. God's

  955. standard.

  956. Anybody

  957. and nobody

  958. likes to

  959. dwell on

  960. their weaknesses

  961. and on

  962. their deficiencies.

  963. But you

  964. are weak.

  965. if you

  966. are not

  967. in Christ,

  968. you are

  969. very weak.

  970. Very

  971. weak.

  972. We all

  973. were once

  974. weak.

  975. It exposes

  976. you.

  977. It makes

  978. a mockery

  979. of you.

  980. You can't

  981. live up to

  982. it.

  983. It's like a

  984. father that's

  985. never pleased

  986. with you if

  987. you do

  988. something good

  989. in the

  990. house.

  991. Never gives

  992. you any

  993. kind of

  994. encouragement.

  995. The law

  996. doesn't know

  997. how to show

  998. encouragement.

  999. It only beats

  1000. you down.

  1001. That's its

  1002. function though.

  1003. It's meant

  1004. to do

  1005. that.

  1006. The law

  1007. is weak

  1008. only because

  1009. our flesh

  1010. is weak.

  1011. But our

  1012. Savior's

  1013. flesh was

  1014. not,

  1015. however,

  1016. weak.

  1017. Was it?

  1018. Notice

  1019. our verse

  1020. says,

  1021. what the law

  1022. could not

  1023. do,

  1024. weak as

  1025. it was

  1026. through the

  1027. flesh,

  1028. God

  1029. did.

  1030. God

  1031. did.

  1032. What the

  1033. law was

  1034. incapable of

  1035. doing through

  1036. us,

  1037. that is,

  1038. rendering

  1039. powerless,

  1040. sin,

  1041. and Satan,

  1042. and death,

  1043. and reflecting

  1044. God's perfect

  1045. moral righteousness,

  1046. it mightily

  1047. achieved through

  1048. Christ.

  1049. What the law

  1050. couldn't do

  1051. through us,

  1052. it achieved

  1053. victoriously,

  1054. triumphantly

  1055. through Christ.

  1056. Notice how

  1057. our verse here

  1058. is phrased,

  1059. right?

  1060. God did,

  1061. sending His

  1062. own Son.

  1063. God the

  1064. Father then

  1065. chose willingly

  1066. to send

  1067. Jesus.

  1068. And let me

  1069. tell you this,

  1070. He was

  1071. compelled by

  1072. nothing in

  1073. you or

  1074. nothing in

  1075. me.

  1076. we have

  1077. no value

  1078. apart from

  1079. that which

  1080. is given

  1081. to us

  1082. by God.

  1083. We are

  1084. the same

  1085. as grass

  1086. apart from

  1087. Christ,

  1088. creation.

  1089. That's all

  1090. that you

  1091. are.

  1092. That's all

  1093. that I

  1094. am,

  1095. is creation.

  1096. God

  1097. sent

  1098. Christ.

  1099. Why?

  1100. turn to

  1101. Isaiah 53.

  1102. This is

  1103. awesome.

  1104. Isaiah 53.

  1105. We are

  1106. going to read

  1107. verses 4

  1108. through 6

  1109. and then

  1110. we are

  1111. going to

  1112. read a

  1113. little bit

  1114. from verse

  1115. 10.

  1116. Isaiah 53,

  1117. 4 through 6

  1118. and a

  1119. little bit

  1120. from 10.

  1121. Listen to

  1122. this.

  1123. This is

  1124. so awesome.

  1125. It says,

  1126. Surely our

  1127. griefs He

  1128. Himself,

  1129. that is

  1130. Christ,

  1131. bore.

  1132. In our

  1133. sorrows He

  1134. carried,

  1135. yet we

  1136. ourselves

  1137. esteemed

  1138. Him stricken.

  1139. We didn't

  1140. recognize Him.

  1141. Smitten of

  1142. God and

  1143. afflicted.

  1144. But He

  1145. was pierced

  1146. through for

  1147. our transgressions.

  1148. He was crushed

  1149. for our

  1150. iniquities.

  1151. And the

  1152. chastisement

  1153. for our

  1154. well-being

  1155. fell upon

  1156. Him.

  1157. And by

  1158. His

  1159. scourging

  1160. we are

  1161. healed.

  1162. All of

  1163. us like

  1164. sheep have

  1165. gone astray.

  1166. Each of

  1167. us has

  1168. turned to

  1169. his own

  1170. way.

  1171. We're

  1172. all

  1173. sinners.

  1174. But the

  1175. Lord has

  1176. caused

  1177. the

  1178. iniquity

  1179. of us

  1180. all to

  1181. fall on

  1182. Christ.

  1183. Christ.

  1184. Verse 10.

  1185. But the

  1186. Lord was

  1187. pleased to

  1188. crush Him,

  1189. putting Him

  1190. to grief.

  1191. So why

  1192. did God

  1193. send Christ

  1194. to die

  1195. this gruesome

  1196. death on

  1197. the cross

  1198. to save

  1199. us from

  1200. our sins

  1201. simply

  1202. because it

  1203. pleased Him.

  1204. He wanted

  1205. to.

  1206. It pleased

  1207. Him.

  1208. to crush

  1209. Christ.

  1210. God does

  1211. what He

  1212. pleases.

  1213. And the

  1214. Son,

  1215. likewise,

  1216. does what

  1217. He pleases.

  1218. Let me read

  1219. you this.

  1220. A little

  1221. Trinity passage

  1222. here.

  1223. Check this

  1224. out.

  1225. Jesus

  1226. says,

  1227. for this

  1228. reason the

  1229. Father loves

  1230. me,

  1231. because I

  1232. lay down

  1233. my life

  1234. that I

  1235. may take

  1236. it up

  1237. again.

  1238. no one

  1239. has taken

  1240. my life

  1241. away from

  1242. me.

  1243. Nobody.

  1244. But I

  1245. lay it

  1246. down on

  1247. my own

  1248. initiative.

  1249. I have

  1250. authority to

  1251. lay it

  1252. down and

  1253. I have

  1254. authority to

  1255. take it

  1256. up again.

  1257. This

  1258. commandment

  1259. I receive

  1260. from my

  1261. Father.

  1262. That's

  1263. Jesus

  1264. saying,

  1265. the

  1266. Father sent

  1267. me,

  1268. but I

  1269. sent

  1270. myself.

  1271. I do

  1272. what I

  1273. want to

  1274. do.

  1275. So it

  1276. pleased

  1277. Christ to

  1278. die on

  1279. the cross.

  1280. God

  1281. enjoyed the

  1282. death of

  1283. Christ.

  1284. Why?

  1285. Because

  1286. through it,

  1287. Christ killed

  1288. the power

  1289. of sin

  1290. that had

  1291. for thousands

  1292. of years

  1293. held sway

  1294. over all

  1295. creation.

  1296. In His

  1297. triumph,

  1298. He conquered

  1299. sin,

  1300. Satan,

  1301. death,

  1302. and hell.

  1303. He brought

  1304. many sons

  1305. to glory.

  1306. That's you,

  1307. that's me.

  1308. He made

  1309. a fool

  1310. of Satan,

  1311. which He

  1312. liked.

  1313. He

  1314. perfectly

  1315. accomplished

  1316. the will

  1317. of His

  1318. Father.

  1319. That is,

  1320. He fulfilled

  1321. the law

  1322. perfectly.

  1323. He

  1324. condemned

  1325. sin in

  1326. the flesh.

  1327. That's

  1328. what the

  1329. law

  1330. couldn't

  1331. do

  1332. through

  1333. us.

  1334. That's

  1335. what the

  1336. law

  1337. mightily

  1338. did

  1339. through

  1340. Christ.

  1341. Condemn

  1342. sin,

  1343. destroy

  1344. sin,

  1345. and the

  1346. power

  1347. of it

  1348. through

  1349. Christ.

  1350. The

  1351. law

  1352. cannot

  1353. make

  1354. men

  1355. perfect,

  1356. but

  1357. Christ

  1358. can.

  1359. Turn to

  1360. Hebrews

  1361. 10.

  1362. 10.

  1363. The law

  1364. cannot make

  1365. men

  1366. perfect,

  1367. but

  1368. Christ

  1369. can.

  1370. Hebrews

  1371. 10.

  1372. Verse

  1373. 10 and

  1374. 14.

  1375. By this

  1376. will we

  1377. have been

  1378. sanctified

  1379. through the

  1380. offering of

  1381. the body

  1382. of Jesus

  1383. Christ once

  1384. for all.

  1385. The word

  1386. sanctification

  1387. means to

  1388. be set

  1389. apart or

  1390. made

  1391. holy.

  1392. So by

  1393. this we

  1394. have been

  1395. made

  1396. holy,

  1397. by the

  1398. offering

  1399. of the

  1400. body

  1401. of Jesus

  1402. Christ

  1403. once for

  1404. all.

  1405. Then

  1406. 14.

  1407. 14.

  1408. For by

  1409. one

  1410. offering,

  1411. that was

  1412. Christ,

  1413. he has

  1414. perfected

  1415. for all

  1416. time those

  1417. who are

  1418. sanctified.

  1419. The law

  1420. can't make

  1421. men perfect,

  1422. but Christ

  1423. can.

  1424. Now listen,

  1425. okay?

  1426. In Christ,

  1427. listen to this,

  1428. this is awesome,

  1429. in Christ we

  1430. have been

  1431. freed from

  1432. the penalty

  1433. of sin.

  1434. From the

  1435. penalty of

  1436. it.

  1437. Eternity

  1438. in hell.

  1439. Justly.

  1440. Free from

  1441. it.

  1442. Absolved

  1443. from all

  1444. guilt

  1445. of it.

  1446. We have

  1447. been freed,

  1448. we are

  1449. being freed,

  1450. excuse me,

  1451. daily from

  1452. the power

  1453. of it.

  1454. So we

  1455. were freed,

  1456. we have

  1457. been freed,

  1458. once and

  1459. for all,

  1460. from the

  1461. penalty.

  1462. We are

  1463. presently

  1464. being freed

  1465. from the

  1466. power,

  1467. and one

  1468. day we

  1469. will fully

  1470. be freed

  1471. from even

  1472. the presence

  1473. of sin.

  1474. In heaven,

  1475. when we

  1476. see Christ

  1477. face to

  1478. face.

  1479. glorious

  1480. truth.

  1481. Lastly,

  1482. verse 4.

  1483. It says,

  1484. in order

  1485. that,

  1486. so he

  1487. condemns

  1488. sin in

  1489. the flesh,

  1490. in order

  1491. that the

  1492. requirement

  1493. of the

  1494. law might

  1495. be fulfilled

  1496. in us

  1497. who do

  1498. not walk

  1499. according to

  1500. the flesh,

  1501. but according

  1502. to the

  1503. spirit.

  1504. The key

  1505. word here

  1506. is

  1507. sanctification,

  1508. and the

  1509. R word

  1510. is the

  1511. result.

  1512. We

  1513. started

  1514. with

  1515. the

  1516. reality

  1517. of no

  1518. condemnation,

  1519. we went

  1520. to the

  1521. reason,

  1522. which was

  1523. justification,

  1524. right?

  1525. From there

  1526. we went

  1527. to the

  1528. route,

  1529. which was

  1530. substitution,

  1531. and then

  1532. on to

  1533. fourthly,

  1534. the result,

  1535. which is

  1536. sanctification.

  1537. As I

  1538. already said,

  1539. sanctification

  1540. meaning to

  1541. be set

  1542. apart unto

  1543. God,

  1544. to be

  1545. made

  1546. holy unto

  1547. God.

  1548. Christ

  1549. saved us

  1550. to make

  1551. us holy,

  1552. it's

  1553. important,

  1554. and as,

  1555. excuse me,

  1556. to make us

  1557. holy as he

  1558. was and

  1559. is holy.

  1560. the law

  1561. is not

  1562. made

  1563. void

  1564. when you

  1565. become a

  1566. Christian.

  1567. Many

  1568. people are

  1569. confused about

  1570. this.

  1571. A lot of

  1572. you may

  1573. say,

  1574. well,

  1575. I thought

  1576. that I

  1577. was released

  1578. from the

  1579. law.

  1580. I mean,

  1581. what about

  1582. Romans 6,

  1583. or Romans 7,

  1584. 6,

  1585. I mean,

  1586. just go back

  1587. one column,

  1588. look at

  1589. this,

  1590. what does

  1591. it say?

  1592. But now

  1593. we have

  1594. been released

  1595. from the

  1596. law,

  1597. John,

  1598. and I

  1599. would say

  1600. keep reading,

  1601. having died

  1602. to that by

  1603. which we

  1604. were bound,

  1605. so that

  1606. we serve

  1607. in the

  1608. newness.

  1609. Serve,

  1610. serve,

  1611. serve in

  1612. the newness

  1613. of the

  1614. spirit,

  1615. not in

  1616. oldness

  1617. of the

  1618. letter.

  1619. It's

  1620. true you've

  1621. been released

  1622. from the

  1623. law,

  1624. but released

  1625. from the

  1626. condemning

  1627. grasp of

  1628. the law,

  1629. that is the

  1630. penalty that

  1631. comes from

  1632. transgressing

  1633. it,

  1634. you've been

  1635. released from

  1636. that,

  1637. but not

  1638. from the

  1639. obligation

  1640. to it.

  1641. That's still

  1642. very much

  1643. alive.

  1644. Christ

  1645. didn't come

  1646. to abolish

  1647. the law,

  1648. didn't he?

  1649. He came

  1650. to fulfill

  1651. it.

  1652. And we're

  1653. to be like

  1654. Christ,

  1655. fulfilling

  1656. it.

  1657. In light

  1658. of that,

  1659. we were

  1660. saved in

  1661. him from

  1662. the penalty

  1663. of the

  1664. law to

  1665. the practice

  1666. of it.

  1667. Saved from

  1668. the penalty

  1669. of it to

  1670. the practice

  1671. of it.

  1672. Be encouraged,

  1673. okay?

  1674. Be encouraged

  1675. by this.

  1676. This is cool.

  1677. There's

  1678. nothing more

  1679. satisfying for

  1680. the Christian

  1681. than keeping

  1682. God's law.

  1683. There's

  1684. nothing more

  1685. satisfying for

  1686. the Christian

  1687. than keeping

  1688. God's law.

  1689. Why?

  1690. Because a

  1691. cheetah likes

  1692. to run,

  1693. a fish

  1694. likes to

  1695. swim,

  1696. a cow

  1697. likes to

  1698. graze,

  1699. and a

  1700. Christian

  1701. likes to

  1702. obey God's

  1703. law.

  1704. it is

  1705. now

  1706. natural

  1707. to us.

  1708. It is

  1709. why you

  1710. were created

  1711. initially

  1712. anyway.

  1713. Those

  1714. animals do

  1715. instinctually,

  1716. right?

  1717. What they've

  1718. been given

  1719. to do.

  1720. Their

  1721. faculties enable

  1722. them.

  1723. Cheetah

  1724. to run,

  1725. cow to

  1726. graze,

  1727. Christians have

  1728. been given

  1729. the Holy

  1730. Spirit to

  1731. obey.

  1732. It's

  1733. simply how

  1734. God created

  1735. us.

  1736. Now notice

  1737. the key

  1738. phrase here

  1739. in the

  1740. beginning of

  1741. verse 4.

  1742. It says,

  1743. in order

  1744. that.

  1745. In order

  1746. that.

  1747. God saves

  1748. us for a

  1749. purpose,

  1750. as I said.

  1751. That's for

  1752. holiness.

  1753. I want you

  1754. to turn to

  1755. Titus 2.

  1756. I want you

  1757. to see this.

  1758. Titus 2,

  1759. he saved

  1760. you for a

  1761. reason.

  1762. Your

  1763. justification

  1764. wasn't the

  1765. end game.

  1766. but your

  1767. sanctification

  1768. and glorification

  1769. were.

  1770. Titus 2,

    Titus 2:11–14

  1771. verses 11

  1772. through 14.

  1773. Listen to

  1774. this.

  1775. Here we go.

  1776. For the

  1777. grace of

  1778. God,

  1779. that's

  1780. Christ,

  1781. basically.

  1782. For the

  1783. grace of

  1784. God has

  1785. appeared,

  1786. bringing

  1787. salvation to

  1788. all men.

  1789. For what

  1790. reason?

  1791. Instructing

  1792. us to

  1793. deny ungodliness

  1794. and worldly

  1795. desires,

  1796. and to

  1797. live sensibly,

  1798. righteously,

  1799. and godly in

  1800. the present

  1801. age,

  1802. looking for

  1803. the

  1804. blessed

  1805. hope and

  1806. the

  1807. appearing

  1808. of the

  1809. glory of

  1810. our

  1811. great

  1812. God

  1813. and

  1814. Savior

  1815. Christ

  1816. Jesus,

  1817. who gave

  1818. himself

  1819. for us,

  1820. that's the

  1821. cross,

  1822. that he

  1823. might redeem

  1824. us from

  1825. every lawless

  1826. deed and

  1827. purify for

  1828. himself.

  1829. There's that

  1830. pleasure thing

  1831. again.

  1832. A people

  1833. for his own

  1834. possession,

  1835. who are

  1836. what?

  1837. Zealous

  1838. for good

  1839. deeds.

  1840. That's

  1841. clear as

  1842. day.

  1843. He saved

  1844. you to

  1845. make you

  1846. holy.

  1847. you say

  1848. that's the

  1849. only place

  1850. in the

  1851. Bible

  1852. that says

  1853. that.

  1854. No,

  1855. it's not.

  1856. Turn to

  1857. 1 Peter.

  1858. 1 Peter 2.

  1859. 1 Peter 2.

  1860. 21-24.

  1861. Listen to

  1862. this.

  1863. Another

  1864. in-your-face

  1865. passage.

  1866. For you

  1867. have been

  1868. called for

  1869. this purpose

  1870. since Christ

  1871. also suffered

  1872. for you,

  1873. leaving you

  1874. an example

  1875. for you to

  1876. follow in

  1877. his steps.

  1878. Who committed

  1879. no sin

  1880. or any

  1881. deceit found

  1882. in his

  1883. mouth.

  1884. And while

  1885. being reviled,

  1886. he did not

  1887. revile in

  1888. return.

  1889. While

  1890. suffering,

  1891. he uttered

  1892. no threats,

  1893. but kept

  1894. entrusting

  1895. himself to

  1896. him who

  1897. judges

  1898. righteously.

  1899. 24.

  1900. Big kicker.

  1901. But he

  1902. himself bore

  1903. our sins in

  1904. his body on

  1905. the cross.

  1906. There's a

  1907. cross that

  1908. we might

  1909. die to

  1910. sin and

  1911. live to

  1912. righteousness.

  1913. So he

  1914. died.

  1915. He saved

  1916. you.

  1917. Why?

  1918. So that you

  1919. could die to

  1920. sin and live

  1921. to righteousness.

  1922. That is

  1923. literally the

  1924. whole chapter

  1925. 6 of

  1926. Romans.

  1927. That's

  1928. another

  1929. massive

  1930. proof text.

  1931. But he

  1932. hasn't left

  1933. you to

  1934. accomplish

  1935. this task

  1936. alone.

  1937. That's a

  1938. very daunting

  1939. task,

  1940. right,

  1941. by itself.

  1942. He's

  1943. given you

  1944. the Holy

  1945. Spirit.

  1946. He's

  1947. given you

  1948. the Holy

  1949. Spirit.

  1950. Turn to

  1951. John 14.

  1952. I've got to

  1953. show you

  1954. this.

  1955. John 14.

  1956. Jesus

  1957. introduces to

  1958. the disciples

  1959. the Holy

  1960. Spirit in

  1961. many ways.

  1962. He hasn't

  1963. left you by

  1964. himself.

  1965. That's what

  1966. he's done.

  1967. Look at

  1968. this.

  1969. Verses 16

  1970. and 17.

  1971. Start there.

  1972. And I

  1973. will ask the

  1974. Father,

  1975. and he

  1976. will give

  1977. you another

  1978. helper,

  1979. that he

  1980. may be

  1981. with you

  1982. temporarily?

  1983. No.

  1984. Forever.

  1985. Forever.

  1986. That is

  1987. the Spirit

  1988. of truth

  1989. whom the

  1990. world can't

  1991. receive because

  1992. it does not

  1993. behold him

  1994. or know him,

  1995. but you

  1996. know him

  1997. because he

  1998. abides with

  1999. you and

  2000. will be

  2001. in you.

  2002. What a

  2003. promise.

  2004. Listen,

  2005. this is how

  2006. you get

  2007. power over

  2008. sin.

  2009. you have

  2010. to know

  2011. this.

  2012. Okay?

  2013. And so

  2014. you may

  2015. ask,

  2016. right?

  2017. How does

  2018. the Spirit

  2019. aid us?

  2020. In what

  2021. way does

  2022. it aid

  2023. us?

  2024. How does

  2025. the Spirit

  2026. do this

  2027. in us?

  2028. How do

  2029. I become

  2030. holy?

  2031. How do

  2032. I walk

  2033. in holiness?

  2034. How does

  2035. the Spirit

  2036. aid us?

  2037. Look at

  2038. this.

  2039. Firstly,

  2040. by empowering

  2041. our faith.

  2042. This is in

  2043. verse 19

  2044. and 20.

  2045. Look down.

  2046. After a little

  2047. while,

  2048. the world

  2049. will behold

  2050. me no more,

  2051. but you

  2052. will behold

  2053. me.

  2054. How?

  2055. By faith.

  2056. Because I

  2057. live,

  2058. you shall

  2059. live also.

  2060. In that

  2061. day you

  2062. shall know

  2063. by faith,

  2064. I might add,

  2065. that I am

  2066. in the

  2067. Father,

  2068. and that

  2069. you are

  2070. in me,

  2071. and that

  2072. I am

  2073. in you.

  2074. He empowers

  2075. our faith,

  2076. number one.

  2077. Number two,

  2078. He empowers

  2079. our love.

  2080. This is

  2081. verse 21.

  2082. He that

  2083. has my

  2084. commandments

  2085. and keeps

  2086. them,

  2087. He it

  2088. is who

  2089. loves me.

  2090. And he

  2091. who loves

  2092. me shall

  2093. be loved

  2094. by my

  2095. Father,

  2096. and I

  2097. will love

  2098. him and

  2099. will disclose

  2100. myself to

  2101. him.

  2102. He empowers

  2103. our love.

  2104. He enables

  2105. you to keep

  2106. the commandments

  2107. of God,

  2108. not because

  2109. of obligation,

  2110. but because

  2111. of love.

  2112. As you

  2113. begin to

  2114. taste what

  2115. obedience is

  2116. like,

  2117. really genuine

  2118. obedience,

  2119. you will begin

  2120. to like it.

  2121. It's what you

  2122. were made

  2123. for.

  2124. It isn't

  2125. burdensome to me

  2126. to love God.

  2127. It isn't

  2128. burdensome to you

  2129. if you were a

  2130. Christian to love

  2131. God.

  2132. It is the

  2133. joy of your

  2134. life to

  2135. serve him.

  2136. He empowers

  2137. your love.

  2138. Thirdly,

  2139. he empowers

  2140. your thought

  2141. life.

  2142. He teaches

  2143. you.

  2144. 26,

  2145. but the

  2146. helper,

  2147. the Holy

  2148. Spirit,

  2149. whom the

  2150. Father will

  2151. send in

  2152. my name,

  2153. he will

  2154. teach you

  2155. all things

  2156. and bring

  2157. to your

  2158. remembrance

  2159. all that I

  2160. said to

  2161. you.

  2162. Now,

  2163. in reference,

  2164. in this

  2165. context,

  2166. he was

  2167. talking about

  2168. inspiring the

  2169. word of

  2170. God.

  2171. He was

  2172. talking about

  2173. writing the

  2174. scriptures

  2175. through the

  2176. apostles,

  2177. apostles,

  2178. but for

  2179. us,

  2180. it still

  2181. applies,

  2182. right?

  2183. I mean,

  2184. we're

  2185. benefactors,

  2186. or beneficiaries,

  2187. I should say,

  2188. of the

  2189. word.

  2190. So,

  2191. thirdly,

  2192. he empowers

  2193. your thought.

  2194. And then,

  2195. fourthly,

  2196. what's the

  2197. result?

  2198. What's the

  2199. result of that?

  2200. Peace and joy

  2201. and strength

  2202. in life.

  2203. 27.

  2204. Peace I

  2205. leave with you.

  2206. My peace I

  2207. give to you.

  2208. Not as the

  2209. world gives,

  2210. do I give

  2211. to you.

  2212. Let not

  2213. your heart

  2214. be troubled,

  2215. nor let it

  2216. be fearful.

  2217. Peace,

  2218. joy,

  2219. and strength

  2220. in peace.

  2221. The world

  2222. has no idea.

  2223. They don't

  2224. have access to

  2225. this.

  2226. No amount

  2227. of money,

  2228. no amount

  2229. of sex,

  2230. no amount

  2231. of pleasure,

  2232. no amount

  2233. of nothing

  2234. can get

  2235. them.

  2236. this kind

  2237. of peace

  2238. and joy.

  2239. They try

  2240. hard.

  2241. They have

  2242. nothing.

  2243. Lastly,

  2244. last thing

  2245. that I'm

  2246. going to

  2247. say.

  2248. The word

  2249. here in

  2250. Romans 8

  2251. again,

  2252. walk.

  2253. In the

  2254. Greek it's

  2255. peripatio.

  2256. It's one

  2257. of the

  2258. oldest and

  2259. most common

  2260. verbs in

  2261. the

  2262. scripture.

  2263. It's

  2264. used,

  2265. this word

  2266. walk,

  2267. I'll read

  2268. it again

  2269. in the

  2270. context

  2271. here.

  2272. It says,

  2273. who do

  2274. not walk

  2275. according to

  2276. the flesh

  2277. but according

  2278. to the

  2279. spirit.

  2280. This is

  2281. going to

  2282. be

  2283. encouraging.

  2284. This word

  2285. walk is

  2286. used to

  2287. describe a

  2288. person's

  2289. bent in

  2290. life,

  2291. or a

  2292. normal way

  2293. in which

  2294. he lives,

  2295. or progress

  2296. of one's

  2297. life.

  2298. Which means

  2299. what?

  2300. God does

  2301. not expect

  2302. you to

  2303. be perfect,

  2304. but he

  2305. expects

  2306. perfection.

  2307. A

  2308. growing

  2309. perfection

  2310. in

  2311. progress.

  2312. It's

  2313. the

  2314. direction

  2315. of your

  2316. life,

  2317. not the

  2318. perfection,

  2319. right?

  2320. One

  2321. office said

  2322. it like

  2323. this,

  2324. the

  2325. Christian

  2326. life is

  2327. the process

  2328. of becoming

  2329. what you

  2330. are.

  2331. It's

  2332. already in

  2333. you.

  2334. It's just

  2335. a matter of

  2336. working that

  2337. out.

  2338. In

  2339. Christ,

  2340. we are

  2341. already

  2342. positionally

  2343. righteous,

  2344. right?

  2345. We talked

  2346. about that.

  2347. We are

  2348. now

  2349. becoming

  2350. behaviorally

  2351. righteous.

  2352. And this

  2353. is the

  2354. will of

  2355. God.

  2356. Note,

  2357. this is

  2358. not a

  2359. suggestion

  2360. by Paul.

  2361. This is

  2362. a statement

  2363. of fact

  2364. saying,

  2365. if you

  2366. are a

  2367. Christian,

  2368. this will

  2369. be happening.

  2370. If you

  2371. are not

  2372. a

  2373. Christian,

  2374. then you

  2375. won't be

  2376. able to do

  2377. this.

  2378. Or if

  2379. you are

  2380. a fake

  2381. Christian,

  2382. or a

  2383. false

  2384. Christian,

  2385. then you

  2386. will be

  2387. exposed as

  2388. not being

  2389. able to

  2390. progress.

  2391. Every

  2392. Christian

  2393. progresses.

  2394. It's a

  2395. fact.

  2396. There's a

  2397. lot of

  2398. texts about

  2399. that,

  2400. too.

  2401. But we're

  2402. not perfect

  2403. people.

  2404. We're

  2405. struggling.

  2406. We're

  2407. growing.

  2408. We're

  2409. becoming

  2410. what we

  2411. are in

  2412. Christ.

  2413. If you

  2414. are truly

  2415. a Christian,

  2416. you will

  2417. be progressing

  2418. in holiness

  2419. and spiritual

  2420. maturity.

  2421. God

  2422. doesn't intend

  2423. to raise

  2424. babies

  2425. forever.

  2426. That would

  2427. be a

  2428. horrible

  2429. idea.

  2430. Right?

  2431. He

  2432. intends for

  2433. you to

  2434. grow.

  2435. mature.

  2436. So what

  2437. does walking

  2438. like the

  2439. Spirit look

  2440. like?

  2441. Clay is

  2442. going to

  2443. teach us

  2444. that next

  2445. week.

  2446. But in

  2447. closing, I

  2448. just want to

  2449. give you

  2450. guys a

  2451. quick

  2452. illustration

  2453. just to

  2454. further

  2455. emphasize and

  2456. make a

  2457. picture for

  2458. you of

  2459. what we

  2460. are in

  2461. Christ.

  2462. My dad

  2463. wrote this

  2464. illustration.

  2465. Before

  2466. Christ,

  2467. picture

  2468. yourself as

  2469. a fish.

  2470. fish.

  2471. You live

  2472. in water.

  2473. Your natural

  2474. habitat is

  2475. the water.

  2476. You swim,

  2477. you have

  2478. gills,

  2479. you breathe

  2480. in the

  2481. water.

  2482. That's where

  2483. you exist.

  2484. That's where

  2485. you have

  2486. your being.

  2487. Let's say

  2488. that fish

  2489. or you

  2490. gets saved.

  2491. Now it's

  2492. transformed

  2493. into a

  2494. man.

  2495. Its natural

  2496. habitat now

  2497. is where?

  2498. It's on

  2499. land.

  2500. It breathes

  2501. air, not

  2502. water.

  2503. It eats the

  2504. fruit of the

  2505. land.

  2506. It walks

  2507. around.

  2508. There's a

  2509. huge

  2510. difference.

  2511. Now, that

  2512. human being

  2513. can go back

  2514. in the

  2515. water for

  2516. a time.

  2517. I can get

  2518. wet again

  2519. with sin,

  2520. can't I?

  2521. I can swim

  2522. around for a

  2523. while sometimes,

  2524. but I can't

  2525. exist there and

  2526. I can't have

  2527. my being there.

  2528. Even if I go

  2529. down to all

  2530. my breath,

  2531. I've got to

  2532. come up for

  2533. air sometime.

  2534. That's in

  2535. essence what

  2536. you are.

  2537. You are an

  2538. entirely new

  2539. creature.

  2540. If any man

  2541. is in Christ,

  2542. he is a

  2543. new creature.

  2544. That word

  2545. there,

  2546. new,

  2547. is kinos,

  2548. which is

  2549. new of a

  2550. totally

  2551. different kind.

  2552. It's never

  2553. been before.

  2554. Totally

  2555. different.

  2556. You are

  2557. very different

  2558. than what you

  2559. want.

  2560. Praise God,

  2561. right?

  2562. That's great.
