  2. 1 Peter chapter 3 is where we're going to be this morning.

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  3. As Wes has already mentioned, this is one of those days where it doesn't go the way you had planned the night before.

  4. Nathan is sick.

  5. He called me this morning, so I give that to you as a...

  6. If it's terrible, blame Nathan. If it's good, just talk to me, alright?

  7. Let me know.

  8. 1 Peter chapter 3 is our text this morning.

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  9. We've got some things that are happening at Christ Family Church that we're really excited about.

  10. And one of those is our community groups.

  11. We've got three community groups right now.

  12. We want to see them grow, expand, and multiply.

  13. And in our community groups, we've been talking a lot about loving our neighbors and reaching our communities with the gospel.

  14. And we've been praying for opportunities to join God in what He's already doing.

  15. To be part of what He is working out.

  16. Because God invites us to join in what He is already doing.

  17. We don't have to do anything new.

  18. Well, all of us here, I can say with boldness, we all live in the South.

  19. We all live in the Bible Belt, although the Bible Belt might not exist much longer.

  20. And one of the barriers that we as Christians in the South deal with is that people already have a preconceived notion of what a Christian looks like.

  21. They already know.

  22. They think they have the idea of what a Christian is supposed to look like and how they're going to or supposed to act.

  23. Well, this barrier prohibits us from having deep conversations with people without first removing that barrier.

  24. Without first proving to them who we really are.

  25. Proving to them that we're real.

  26. Proving to them that our life has been changed through the gospel.

  27. The problem here in the South is there's a ton of people just like that.

  28. Who have the preconceived notion of what a Christian looks like.

  29. So this circumstance that we face, the people around us, people who know or think they know what a Christian is,

  30. people who claim to be Christians and maybe aren't at all,

  31. makes it vitally important that we live a specific way, a certain way through the gospel in our communities.

  32. If we're going to reach those communities, we have to be real.

  33. We have to live a specific way, a biblical way, not a denomination way or not a religious way.

  34. So this morning I want to talk about for us evidences of a Christian life.

  35. Evidences that are dead giveaways to people around us that we are Christians, that we are believers,

  36. that we are followers of Christ, that we live the gospel out.

  37. There's a saying in sports, the saying is the team looks good coming off the bus.

  38. Meaning they've got their great uniforms on, they've got the physique, whether it's football or basketball or whatever.

  39. They've got their confidence, they're strutting around with their headphones and they're dressed to the tee or whatever.

  40. And you look at them and say, oh man, they look good coming off the bus.

  41. But you guys know the reality is, is how do they play?

  42. How do they act it out, out on the field or out on the court?

  43. That's what speaks, not how they look coming off the bus.

  44. The same is for us as Christians.

  45. We may look good getting off the bus.

  46. We may look good leaving the church building.

  47. We may look good sitting in a room with a bunch of Christians singing songs.

  48. But how are we when we're out in life?

  49. How are we out on the field?

  50. And that's what I want to talk about this morning.

  51. So, 1 Peter chapter 3, we're looking at five verses.

    1 Peter 3 chapter mention

  52. We're going to start reading in verse 13 and kind of dig through them.

  53. Starting in verse 13.

  54. Now, who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good?

  55. But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you will be blessed.

  56. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled.

  57. But in your hearts, honor Christ the Lord as holy,

  58. always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.

  59. Yet, do it with gentleness and respect,

  60. having a good conscience so that when you are slandered,

  61. those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

  62. For it is better to suffer for doing good,

  63. if that should be God's will,

  64. than for doing evil.

  65. Let's pray together.

  66. Father, you know the circumstances of this day.

  67. None of this has surprised you.

  68. None of this has taken you,

  69. thrown you off guard.

  70. God, we trust in you this morning,

  71. that you are at work here this morning.

  72. And I ask, God, that you would speak through me,

  73. that you would use me,

  74. that what is spoken would not be my opinions,

  75. that it would be your word to us this morning.

  76. As nerve-wracking as this may be,

  77. God, you have put me in this position,

  78. so I pray, God, that you would use me to proclaim,

  79. to build your kingdom this morning.

  80. I pray for the hearers of your word,

  81. that we would hear with our hearts,

  82. and not with just our ears.

  83. And when that happens,

  84. we know that action is to follow.

  85. When that happens,

  86. we know that we leave this place different,

  87. living different,

  88. striving to be different,

  89. because we have heard a word from you.

  90. So, God, I plead and I beg,

  91. speak to us this morning.

  92. Use your word,

  93. spirit move,

  94. in Jesus' name.

  95. Amen.

  96. So, just a little background here.

  97. Peter is writing this letter to churches in Asia Minor,

  98. and there's persecution happening in these churches.

  99. These are churches in Asia Minor

  100. who are tasting great persecution.

  101. They are living it.

  102. And they're dealing with the question,

  103. is it worth it?

  104. Is it worth it to struggle,

  105. to deal with this type of persecution,

  106. to suffer?

  107. And Peter writes this letter,

  108. and it's to affirm to them,

  109. yes, it is.

  110. That's why in chapter 1, verse 3,

  111. it says we have a living hope

  112. for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

  113. He, right off the bat,

  114. tells them it is worth it

  115. through Jesus Christ

  116. and because of Jesus Christ.

  117. So, he affirms to them

  118. that this persecution is okay.

  119. It's worth it.

  120. So, now,

  121. we come to chapter 3.

  122. And in these five verses,

  123. Peter gives us some evidences

  124. of a Christian life.

  125. And these evidences for you this morning

  126. come in questions.

  127. The first one is,

  128. are you passionate for good?

  129. Are you passionate for good?

  130. The second one is,

  131. Christ Lord of your life.

  132. The third one,

  133. do you have a readiness

  134. to defend your faith?

  135. Fourth,

  136. do you live with a good conscience?

  137. And fifth,

  138. do you suffer for doing good?

  139. And of course,

  140. we'll run through those again.

  141. First one,

  142. first question for you,

  143. first evidence.

  144. Are you passionate for good?

  145. And we see this in verse 13.

  146. Now,

  147. who is there to harm you

  148. if you are zealous

  149. for what is good?

  150. Another word for good

  151. is righteous.

  152. You have a fervent pursuit

  153. of good,

  154. of righteousness.

  155. In the face of danger

  156. and suffering,

  157. the churches in Asia Minor

  158. were encouraged

  159. to pursue righteousness

  160. above everything else,

  161. no matter what.

  162. This word zealous

  163. means an intensity

  164. or an enthusiasm,

  165. a passion.

  166. In Jesus' time,

  167. zealots were a group

  168. that pledged

  169. to free the Jews

  170. no matter what

  171. from all foreign rule.

  172. And they would assassinate,

  173. they would steal,

  174. they would lie,

  175. they would kill themselves

  176. for the greater good.

  177. That's the kind of passion

  178. that Peter is talking about here.

  179. That's the word he's using.

  180. So much passion

  181. that they'd even give up

  182. their own lives for it.

  183. Now,

  184. there's an assumption here

  185. in verse 13.

  186. If we are zealous

  187. for what is good,

  188. then we're the opposite

  189. towards what is bad.

  190. See the assumption?

  191. If we're zealous

  192. for what is good,

  193. if we're passionate

  194. about what is good,

  195. what is righteous,

  196. then we're the opposite

  197. towards what is bad,

  198. which we know

  199. is sin.

  200. So the question for you

  201. and for me

  202. is are you zealous

  203. for sin

  204. or for what is good?

  205. Is there a line

  206. that you won't cross

  207. in your life?

  208. Do you have

  209. boundaries set up?

  210. Are you zealous enough?

  211. Are you passionate enough

  212. to care?

  213. Or do you just go through

  214. and whatever happens,

  215. happens?

  216. Do you take extreme measures

  217. to avoid sin?

  218. Guys,

  219. do you watch TV shows

  220. that lead to thoughts

  221. in your minds?

  222. Do you visit websites

  223. that you wouldn't visit

  224. in front of other people?

  225. These are the questions

  226. and the circumstances

  227. that a passionate person

  228. of good would not do.

  229. Are you zealous

  230. for what is good?

  231. Do you pursue people

  232. above God?

  233. Do you pursue

  234. the praise of people

  235. instead of the praise

  236. of God?

  237. Again,

  238. something that somebody

  239. who is zealous

  240. for good

  241. would not do.

  242. Another way to look at it

  243. in Matthew 5,

    Matthew 5:6

  244. verse 6

  245. in the Beatitudes,

  246. the beginning of the Sermon

  247. on the Mount,

  248. Jesus says,

  249. Blessed are those

  250. who hunger

  251. and thirst

  252. for righteousness

  253. for they shall be

  254. satisfied.

  255. Hunger and thirst.

  256. Two strong verbs.

  257. And we all can relate

  258. to these two verbs.

  259. We all know the feeling

  260. of being hungry.

  261. We all know the feeling

  262. of working outside

  263. in the middle of summer

  264. and being exhausted

  265. and thirsty

  266. and all you want

  267. is some water.

  268. And the only thing

  269. that's going to quench

  270. that thirst

  271. is that water.

  272. That's the idea here

  273. is hungering

  274. and thirsting

  275. for righteousness.

  276. Are we zealous?

  277. Are we passionate

  278. for good?

  279. If you're a Christian,

  280. the assumption

  281. will be true

  282. in your life.

  283. You will oppose

  284. the bad.

  285. You will oppose sin.

  286. And you will be

  287. passionate and zealous

  288. and you'll hunger

  289. and thirst

  290. for righteousness.

  291. Is there a passion

  292. in your life

  293. for good things?

  294. For godly things?

  295. Do you want

  296. to do good things?

  297. So there's our first

  298. piece of evidence

  299. found in verse 13.

  300. Passionate for good.

  301. The next one is,

  302. is Christ set apart

  303. in your heart

  304. as Lord?

  305. And this is found

  306. in verse 15.

  307. Verse 15 reads,

  308. but in your hearts

  309. honor Christ the Lord

  310. as holy.

  311. Christ as Lord

  312. is New Testament language.

  313. In the Old Testament,

  314. Lord was always used

  315. as Yahweh or Jehovah.

  316. So to say

  317. that Christ is Lord

  318. is saying

  319. that Christ is God.

  320. That Christ is God.

  321. He is the same

  322. as the God

  323. of the Old Testament.

  324. His deity

  325. is being proclaimed

  326. when it says

  327. Christ as Lord.

  328. So is Christ

  329. set apart

  330. as Lord

  331. in your heart?

  332. Is He holy?

  333. Holy.

  334. Now, of course,

  335. Christ is holy,

  336. but is He set apart?

  337. Is He part of your life?

  338. Has He changed your life?

  339. So, so many times

  340. in churches

  341. we describe salvation

  342. as a decision.

  343. It is a decision

  344. to be made.

  345. Choose this day

  346. to be saved.

  347. Do you want to go to heaven

  348. when you die?

  349. There's that aspect

  350. of biblical salvation.

  351. I will not

  352. shoot that down.

  353. But it's not

  354. the whole story.

  355. See, the depravity

  356. of all of us

  357. is missed.

  358. The depravity

  359. of our sin

  360. and our lack

  361. of doing good

  362. is missed.

  363. The holiness

  364. of God

  365. is missed.

  366. The atonement

  367. for our depravity

  368. of sin

  369. or sin

  370. is missed.

  371. The judgment

  372. of God

  373. is missed

  374. that we are guilty

  375. of that sin.

  376. The gospel

  377. is missed

  378. that we can't

  379. do anything

  380. good

  381. apart from

  382. Him.

  383. When you and I

  384. become Christians,

  385. we receive

  386. this gift

  387. from God.

  388. And when we

  389. receive this gift,

  390. we surrender

  391. our lives

  392. to Him.

  393. Not because

  394. it seems better

  395. or feels better

  396. or it beats hell,

  397. but because God

  398. has chosen you

  399. and He knows

  400. His children.

  401. And we surrender

  402. our lives

  403. and we make Him

  404. Lord of our lives.

  405. See, we were sinners

  406. with no hope.

  407. Sinners

  408. without a direction.

  409. Sinners,

  410. in fact,

  411. our direction

  412. was the opposite

  413. of God Himself.

  414. And we became

  415. saints with hope

  416. in eternity.

  417. Jesus Christ

  418. is not a decision.

  419. He's a Savior.

  420. He's not

  421. an invitation.

  422. He's a calling.

  423. He's not a part

  424. of your life.

  425. He is

  426. life.

  427. So to acknowledge

  428. Jesus Christ

  429. as Savior

  430. is to worship

  431. Him as Lord.

  432. He should be

  433. the sole object

  434. of our love,

  435. our reverence,

  436. our loyalty,

  437. and our obedience.

  438. So in so doing,

  439. then,

  440. our entire lives

  441. will flow

  442. from Him

  443. being Lord

  444. of our lives.

  445. So all our actions

  446. will be

  447. different,

  448. will be godly,

  449. will be passionate

  450. about good.

  451. if Christ

  452. is Lord

  453. of our lives,

  454. then we will

  455. do three things.

  456. First,

  457. we'll do

  458. is we'll

  459. recognize

  460. His perfection.

  461. Turn to

  462. Hebrews chapter 7

    Hebrews 7 chapter mention

  463. real quick.

  464. Hebrews chapter 7

    Hebrews 7:26

  465. verse 26.

  466. It reads,

  467. For it was indeed

  468. fitting that we

  469. should have such

  470. a high priest

  471. holy,

  472. innocent,

  473. unstained,

  474. separated from

  475. sinners,

  476. and exalted

  477. above the heavens.

  478. Verse 27.

  479. He has no need

  480. like those high

  481. priests to offer

  482. sacrifices daily,

  483. first for His own

  484. sins and then

  485. for those of the

  486. people.

  487. So He did this

  488. once for all

  489. when He offered

  490. up Himself.

  491. Holy,

  492. unstained,

  493. set apart.

  494. Jesus is the

  495. only one who

  496. is perfect

  497. and worthy

  498. to be praised.

  499. It's not us,

  500. not what we do,

  501. but Jesus alone.

  502. So if Christ

  503. is Lord of our

  504. lives,

  505. we'll recognize

  506. His perfection.

  507. But not only

  508. will we recognize

  509. His perfection,

  510. we will submit

  511. ourselves to

  512. His will.

  513. We'll submit

  514. ourselves to

  515. His will

  516. and not our

  517. own.

  518. Romans 12

    Romans 12:2

  519. verse 2

  520. says,

  521. do not be

  522. conformed to

  523. this world,

  524. but be

  525. transformed by

  526. the renewal

  527. of your mind,

  528. that by testing

  529. you may discern

  530. what is the

  531. will of God,

  532. what is the

  533. good and

  534. acceptable and

  535. perfect.

  536. He knows

  537. all and He

  538. has what is

  539. best for us.

  540. So when

  541. Christ is Lord,

  542. we will submit

  543. ourselves to

  544. His will.

  545. And thirdly,

  546. we will make

  547. His glory known

  548. through our

  549. lives.

  550. So if we do

  551. these things,

  552. we hear repeat

  553. often that we

  554. were created to

  555. do two things.

  556. Logos question

  557. number two,

  558. to glorify Him

  559. and enjoy Him

  560. forever.

  561. Well, if that's

  562. our end,

  563. how we get to

  564. our end is by

  565. Jesus Christ

  566. being our

  567. Lord.

  568. In Revelation

    Revelation 1:12–18

  569. chapter 1,

  570. verse 12

  571. through 18,

  572. it reads,

  573. then I

  574. turned to see

  575. the voice that

  576. was speaking to

  577. me.

  578. And on

  579. turning, I

  580. saw seven

  581. golden lampstands

  582. and in the

  583. midst of the

  584. lampstands, one

  585. like a son of

  586. man, clothed

  587. with a long

  588. robe and with

  589. a golden sash

  590. around his

  591. chest.

  592. The hairs of

  593. his head were

  594. white, like

  595. white wool,

  596. like snow.

  597. His eyes were

  598. like a flame

  599. of fire.

  600. His feet were

  601. like burnished

  602. bronze, refined

  603. in a furnace,

  604. and his voice

  605. was like the

  606. roar of many

  607. waters.

  608. In his right

  609. hand he held

  610. seven stars.

  611. From his mouth

  612. came a sharp

  613. two-edged sword,

  614. and his face

  615. was like the

  616. sun shining in

  617. full strength.

  618. When I saw

  619. him, I fell

  620. at his feet

  621. as though dead,

  622. but he laid

  623. his right hand

  624. on me, saying,

  625. fear not.

  626. I am the

  627. first and the

  628. last and the

  629. living one.

  630. I died, and

  631. behold, I am

  632. living forevermore,

  633. and I have the

  634. keys of death

  635. and Hades.

  636. This is who

  637. we worship.

  638. This is Jesus.

  639. He is in

  640. heaven.

  641. He is the

  642. first and the

  643. last.

  644. He is the

  645. living one and

  646. alive forevermore.

  647. We bring him

  648. glory when he is

  649. Lord of our

  650. lives.

  651. We will honor

  652. his name, and

  653. his name will be

  654. above anything

  655. else.

  656. In other words,

  657. back to

  658. Matthew,

  659. Sermon on the

  660. Mount, chapter

  661. 6, the Lord's

  662. prayer says,

  663. Hallowed be

  664. your name.

  665. Holy, holy,

  666. holy is your

  667. name.

  668. Your kingdom

  669. come.

  670. Your will be

  671. done.

  672. That will be the

  673. outpouring of

  674. Jesus as Lord of

  675. our lives.

  676. Holy, holy,

  677. holy, your

  678. kingdom come.

  679. Your will be

  680. done.

  681. Earlier in

  682. 1 Peter, and

  683. in all of

  684. Scripture, when

  685. it says, when it

  686. talks about the

  687. heart, the

  688. origin of the

  689. human behavior,

  690. the seat in

  691. which all

  692. decisions and

  693. actions come

  694. from, it is

  695. what makes us

  696. who we are.

  697. So to make

  698. Jesus the Lord

  699. of our hearts

  700. automatically makes

  701. an inner thing

  702. into an

  703. external thing.

  704. So an internal

  705. thing becomes

  706. an external

  707. thing.

  708. So what we

  709. do on the

  710. inside then

  711. turns into

  712. actions as

  713. we live.

  714. It will be

  715. evident.

  716. Our entire

  717. lives will

  718. change for the

  719. good.

  720. Our desires

  721. will be His

  722. desires.

  723. Not because He

  724. changed, but

  725. because He

  726. changed us.

  727. Our actions

  728. will line up

  729. with His

  730. will.

  731. And as

  732. Romans 12

  733. said, we

  734. will be

  735. transformed by

  736. Jesus Christ

  737. and His

  738. Lordship.

  739. So Christ

  740. being Lord

  741. is another

  742. piece of

  743. evidence to

  744. prove a

  745. godly life.

  746. The third

  747. evidence is

  748. in a

  749. question.

  750. Do you

  751. have a

  752. readiness to

  753. defend your

  754. faith?

  755. Back to

  756. 1 Peter 3

    1 Peter 3:15

  757. verse 15,

  758. the second

  759. part of

  760. 15.

  761. Read the

  762. first part.

  763. But in

  764. your

  765. hearts,

  766. honor Christ

  767. the Lord

  768. as holy,

  769. always being

  770. prepared to

  771. make a

  772. defense to

  773. anyone who

  774. asks you

  775. for a

  776. reason for

  777. the hope

  778. that is

  779. in you.

  780. Always be

  781. prepared.

  782. Yet do it

  783. with gentleness

  784. and respect.

  785. The language

  786. here paints a

  787. picture of a

  788. courtroom.

  789. Make a

  790. defense.

  791. Defend your

  792. case.

  793. Make an

  794. argument.

  795. This, of

  796. course, does

  797. not mean that

  798. we're going to

  799. be in a

  800. courtroom or

  801. setting like

  802. that to

  803. defend our

  804. faith.

  805. But it

  806. does mean

  807. that since

  808. the gospel

  809. is a

  810. public

  811. lifestyle,

  812. it is a

  813. changed

  814. lifestyle,

  815. lived out

  816. for people

  817. to see,

  818. people are

  819. going to

  820. ask.

  821. And we're

  822. going to

  823. have to

  824. make public

  825. defenses,

  826. public

  827. arguments.

  828. A

  829. commentator

  830. said,

  831. it does

  832. mean that

  833. every

  834. believer

  835. should grasp

  836. the

  837. essentials

  838. of the

  839. faith and

  840. should have

  841. the ability

  842. to explain

  843. to others

  844. why they

  845. think the

  846. Christian

  847. faith is

  848. true.

  849. So do you

  850. have a

  851. readiness to

  852. defend your

  853. faith?

  854. Do you

  855. have this

  856. yearning just

  857. to know

  858. why you

  859. believe what

  860. you believe?

  861. See,

  862. apathy is

  863. not accepted.

  864. In verse

  865. 15, it

  866. says,

  867. always being

  868. prepared.

  869. Now, I'll

  870. be honest,

  871. this morning

  872. took me by

  873. surprise.

  874. I don't

  875. know that I

  876. was prepared

  877. this morning

  878. for the

  879. phone call.

  880. Needless to

  881. say, I

  882. had to be

  883. prepared.

  884. I had to

  885. prepare myself.

  886. But see,

  887. apathy is

  888. not allowed.

  889. The idea

  890. that we

  891. can just

  892. coast on

  893. through and

  894. not care,

  895. just, you

  896. know, I'm

  897. Christian,

  898. whatever,

  899. whatever that

  900. means.

  901. I'm going to

  902. go to

  903. heaven.

  904. It's cool.

  905. It's not

  906. a fruit of

  907. the gospel

  908. in your

  909. life.

  910. We should

  911. always be

  912. concerned about

  913. the opportunity

  914. to share.

  915. It is a

  916. proactive

  917. attitude.

  918. I'm afraid

  919. that churches,

  920. the American

  921. church, is

  922. filled with

  923. apathetic

  924. people who

  925. can defend

  926. their church.

  927. they can

  928. defend their

  929. worship

  930. experience,

  931. but they

  932. cannot defend

  933. the hope

  934. that they

  935. have or

  936. they say

  937. they have

  938. in Christ.

  939. Now, think

  940. about that.

  941. They can

  942. defend why

  943. they go to

  944. a specific

  945. church, but

  946. they can't

  947. defend Jesus

  948. of the church

  949. they say

  950. they go to.

  951. Here's the

  952. reason I

  953. think, I

  954. believe, is

  955. because they

  956. have been

  957. emotionally

  958. infected.

  959. their need

  960. to get

  961. their feelings

  962. stirred up

  963. has been

  964. met and

  965. not their

  966. spiritual

  967. need.

  968. So, when

  969. you attack

  970. a feeling

  971. or attack

  972. emotion,

  973. the gloves

  974. come off

  975. and they're

  976. able to

  977. defend that,

  978. but they're

  979. not able to

  980. defend the

  981. Jesus.

  982. And Peter

  983. is not

  984. saying,

  985. now, defend

  986. those churches

  987. you're with.

  988. Defend those

  989. churches in

  990. Asia Minor.

  991. He's saying

  992. be ready to

  993. give an

  994. answer for

  995. what?

  996. For the

  997. hope.

  998. Always being

  999. prepared to

  1000. make a

  1001. defense.

  1002. Anyone

  1003. asks you

  1004. for a

  1005. reason for

  1006. the hope

  1007. that is

  1008. in you.

  1009. A living

  1010. hope, as

  1011. 1 Peter 1

  1012. 3 says,

  1013. we have a

  1014. living hope

  1015. for the

  1016. resurrection

  1017. of Jesus

  1018. Christ from

  1019. the dead.

  1020. Jesus

  1021. resurrecting

  1022. gives us

  1023. hope.

  1024. And because

  1025. of his

  1026. action, we

  1027. no longer

  1028. fear death.

  1029. Or we

  1030. should no

  1031. longer fear

  1032. death.

  1033. Now, I

  1034. can guarantee

  1035. that if I

  1036. surveyed

  1037. everybody in

  1038. this room

  1039. and I

  1040. said, what

  1041. is your

  1042. greatest fear?

  1043. Some of

  1044. you are

  1045. going to

  1046. say to

  1047. die.

  1048. Death.

  1049. And that's

  1050. reality.

  1051. Some will

  1052. say spiders.

  1053. Some will

  1054. say snakes.

  1055. Some will

  1056. say, I

  1057. don't

  1058. know.

  1059. some of

  1060. you will

  1061. say death

  1062. or dying.

  1063. Now, the

  1064. reason is

  1065. probably

  1066. something

  1067. related to

  1068. not being

  1069. able to

  1070. do or

  1071. accomplish

  1072. something

  1073. yet that

  1074. you want

  1075. to accomplish.

  1076. And I

  1077. can relate

  1078. to that a

  1079. little bit.

  1080. But Jesus

  1081. himself and

  1082. eternity with

  1083. Jesus is

  1084. far better

  1085. than anything

  1086. this world

  1087. has to

  1088. offer.

  1089. Anything.

  1090. Think of

  1091. the greatest

  1092. thing that

  1093. you could

  1094. accomplish.

  1095. And he

  1096. is far

  1097. better than

  1098. that.

  1099. When we

  1100. die, it's

  1101. going to be

  1102. like Apple

  1103. with their

  1104. new iPad

  1105. 3.

  1106. Hang with

  1107. me.

  1108. Don't drop

  1109. off the

  1110. cliff.

  1111. Hold on.

  1112. The iPad

  1113. 2 is a

  1114. remarkable

  1115. piece of

  1116. technology.

  1117. People in

  1118. here have

  1119. it right

  1120. now.

  1121. They're

  1122. studying.

  1123. They're

  1124. cross-referencing.

  1125. And I'm

  1126. okay with

  1127. that.

  1128. Remarkable

  1129. piece of

  1130. technology.

  1131. But when

  1132. the iPad

  1133. 3 comes

  1134. in, what

  1135. does Apple

  1136. do?

  1137. They tell

  1138. you, you

  1139. don't want

  1140. the iPad

  1141. 2.

  1142. It's a piece

  1143. of junk.

  1144. You want

  1145. the iPad

  1146. 3.

  1147. Look at

  1148. it.

  1149. It's even

  1150. better.

  1151. better.

  1152. And they

  1153. do this so

  1154. that you'll

  1155. buy their

  1156. product.

  1157. Now, the

  1158. reality is

  1159. that when

  1160. we get to

  1161. heaven, it's

  1162. not going to

  1163. be like the

  1164. Apple iPad

  1165. 2, which is

  1166. good, and the

  1167. iPad 3, which

  1168. is better.

  1169. It's going to

  1170. be Jesus'

  1171. best and

  1172. everything else

  1173. is garbage.

  1174. And we're not

  1175. even going to

  1176. want what's

  1177. behind us.

  1178. We're not

  1179. even going to

  1180. want what's

  1181. here.

  1182. We're going to

  1183. want Jesus.

  1184. We're going to

  1185. want to worship

  1186. Jesus alone.

  1187. So, we can

  1188. then say,

  1189. nothing is

  1190. better than

  1191. Jesus, here

  1192. or in

  1193. eternity.

  1194. And we can

  1195. no longer

  1196. fear death.

  1197. So then, if

  1198. we can no

  1199. longer fear

  1200. death, the

  1201. question in

  1202. verse 13 is

  1203. rhetorical.

  1204. Now, who is

  1205. there to harm

  1206. you if you

  1207. are zealous

  1208. for what is

  1209. good?

  1210. You're

  1211. zealous for

  1212. what is

  1213. good?

  1214. You're

  1215. zealous for

  1216. righteousness?

  1217. That desire

  1218. has been put

  1219. in you through

  1220. Jesus.

  1221. Jesus is our

  1222. living hope

  1223. through His

  1224. resurrection.

  1225. We have

  1226. eternal security.

  1227. He is far

  1228. better than

  1229. anything this

  1230. world has to

  1231. offer.

  1232. The answer

  1233. is simple.

  1234. No one.

  1235. We no longer

  1236. fear death.

  1237. Then no one

  1238. can intimidate

  1239. us.

  1240. No one can

  1241. change our

  1242. mind.

  1243. strongholds

  1244. that we

  1245. struggle with.

  1246. Strongholds

  1247. that just

  1248. grab us

  1249. and hold

  1250. on to us

  1251. really can

  1252. no longer

  1253. be strong.

  1254. So, let's

  1255. turn it a

  1256. little bit.

  1257. Are you

  1258. being asked

  1259. to make a

  1260. defense?

  1261. Are you

  1262. being asked

  1263. to defend

  1264. the hope

  1265. that you

  1266. have in

  1267. Jesus

  1268. Christ?

  1269. Christ?

  1270. Does your

  1271. lifestyle lead

  1272. to questions

  1273. of why you

  1274. act the

  1275. way that

  1276. you do?

  1277. A godly

  1278. life is a

  1279. life that

  1280. lives in

  1281. opposition or

  1282. opposite to

  1283. the world.

  1284. That is as

  1285. clear a

  1286. statement and

  1287. as simple

  1288. statement as I

  1289. can make.

  1290. It is

  1291. opposite of

  1292. the world.

  1293. See, the

  1294. world celebrates

  1295. individuality.

  1296. The gospel

  1297. promotes unity.

  1298. unity.

  1299. The world

  1300. preaches

  1301. self-preservation.

  1302. The gospel

  1303. promotes one.

  1304. The world

  1305. promotes the

  1306. idea that

  1307. beauty and

  1308. attractiveness

  1309. is all we

  1310. need.

  1311. The gospel

  1312. proclaims the

  1313. blood of

  1314. Christ is all

  1315. we need.

  1316. The world

  1317. promotes do.

  1318. Do, do,

  1319. got to do

  1320. this, got to

  1321. do that.

  1322. The gospel

  1323. proclaims done.

  1324. Jesus has

  1325. already done

  1326. it.

  1327. The world

  1328. leads to

  1329. death forever.

  1330. forever.

  1331. The gospel

  1332. leads to

  1333. life everlasting.

  1334. If we

  1335. live a

  1336. gospel-centered

  1337. life, people

  1338. will ask

  1339. for us to

  1340. make a

  1341. defense because

  1342. we will

  1343. be different.

  1344. Are you

  1345. being asked?

  1346. Are you

  1347. being asked?

  1348. The last

  1349. part of

  1350. verse 15

  1351. says,

  1352. yet do it

  1353. with gentleness

  1354. forgiveness and

  1355. respect?

  1356. Now, when you

  1357. encounter a

  1358. hostile challenge

  1359. to something

  1360. important to

  1361. you, no

  1362. matter what

  1363. it is,

  1364. what is your

  1365. response like?

  1366. Does it

  1367. tend to be

  1368. more emotional

  1369. and harsh

  1370. and more

  1371. right at

  1372. them?

  1373. If it is,

  1374. we're all in

  1375. the same

  1376. group.

  1377. We're all

  1378. together.

  1379. It's because

  1380. answering critics

  1381. in your own

  1382. power, with

  1383. your own

  1384. emotion,

  1385. that's going

  1386. to be the

  1387. reaction.

  1388. We're going

  1389. to go after

  1390. them.

  1391. We're going

  1392. to defend

  1393. with raw

  1394. emotion.

  1395. But see,

  1396. the gospel

  1397. enables us

  1398. to answer

  1399. with gentleness,

  1400. with respect.

  1401. Now, I know

  1402. what some of you

  1403. are thinking.

  1404. This doesn't

  1405. mean that we

  1406. fold like

  1407. lawn chairs.

  1408. We just,

  1409. you know,

  1410. take the

  1411. critics and

  1412. that's cool,

  1413. man.

  1414. Whatever.

  1415. Just tell

  1416. me.

  1417. Tell me

  1418. I suck.

  1419. It's cool.

  1420. Tell me

  1421. Jesus is

  1422. horrible.

  1423. That's cool.

  1424. No.

  1425. But we

  1426. can, the

  1427. gospel still

  1428. allows us to

  1429. correct with

  1430. gentleness,

  1431. with love,

  1432. with care and

  1433. concern for

  1434. their hearts

  1435. and their

  1436. souls.

  1437. We can

  1438. still be bold

  1439. and right

  1440. and not

  1441. sin.

  1442. The gospel

  1443. enables us

  1444. to answer

  1445. with gentleness

  1446. and respect.

  1447. See, this is

  1448. why Peter

  1449. tells us to

  1450. do this,

  1451. to do it

  1452. with gentleness

  1453. and respect.

  1454. He knows

  1455. that we're

  1456. human.

  1457. He knows

  1458. that the

  1459. readers of

  1460. this are

  1461. going to

  1462. be human

  1463. and we're

  1464. going to

  1465. have the

  1466. same sinful

  1467. nature,

  1468. the same

  1469. emotional

  1470. fortitude

  1471. and whatever.

  1472. We're going

  1473. to be made

  1474. the same.

  1475. And he

  1476. knows

  1477. through the

  1478. leading of

  1479. the Holy

  1480. Spirit,

  1481. of course.

  1482. Nevertheless,

  1483. our response

  1484. can be and

  1485. must be

  1486. gentleness

  1487. and respect.

  1488. Gentleness

  1489. to the

  1490. unbeliever,

  1491. concern for

  1492. their souls,

  1493. love for

  1494. them,

  1495. respect

  1496. towards God,

  1497. respect and

  1498. fear is

  1499. another word

  1500. here,

  1501. towards God.

  1502. which as

  1503. we know,

  1504. fear of

  1505. God,

  1506. everything

  1507. trickles

  1508. down from

  1509. that,

  1510. from our

  1511. reverence

  1512. to God,

  1513. everything

  1514. kind of

  1515. trickles

  1516. down from

  1517. that.

  1518. So,

  1519. we fear

  1520. God,

  1521. we're going

  1522. to be

  1523. humble.

  1524. We fear

  1525. God,

  1526. we're going

  1527. to put

  1528. others

  1529. before

  1530. ourselves.

  1531. We fear

  1532. God,

  1533. we will

  1534. respond to

  1535. our offenders

  1536. with love

  1537. and gentleness.

  1538. Here's what

  1539. Martin Luther

  1540. wrote about

  1541. speaking to

  1542. people about

  1543. the hope

  1544. that we

  1545. have.

  1546. He says,

  1547. do you know

  1548. what the

  1549. devil thinks

  1550. when he

  1551. sees men

  1552. use violence

  1553. to propagate

  1554. the gospel?

  1555. He sits

  1556. with folded

  1557. arms behind

  1558. the fire

  1559. of hell

  1560. and says

  1561. with malignant

  1562. looks and

  1563. frightful grin,

  1564. ah,

  1565. how wise

  1566. these madmen

  1567. are to play

  1568. my game.

  1569. Let them

  1570. go on.

  1571. I shall

  1572. reap the

  1573. benefit

  1574. and I

  1575. delight in

  1576. it.

  1577. But,

  1578. when he

  1579. sees the

  1580. word

  1581. running

  1582. and contending

  1583. alone on

  1584. the battlefield,

  1585. then he

  1586. shudders

  1587. and shakes

  1588. for fear.

  1589. We must

  1590. defend,

  1591. not with

  1592. our opinions,

  1593. not with

  1594. our thoughts,

  1595. we defend

  1596. with the

  1597. word.

  1598. We defend

  1599. with the

  1600. word,

  1601. the gospel

  1602. of Jesus

  1603. Christ.

  1604. Do you

  1605. know the

  1606. word?

  1607. Do you

  1608. know the

  1609. word of

  1610. God?

  1611. So,

  1612. not only do

  1613. we have a

  1614. readiness to

  1615. defend our

  1616. faith,

  1617. but another

  1618. piece of

  1619. evidence is,

  1620. do you

  1621. have a

  1622. good

  1623. conscience?

  1624. Verse

  1625. 16.

  1626. Having a

  1627. good

  1628. conscience.

  1629. Having a

  1630. good conscience.

  1631. So,

  1632. be ready to

  1633. defend your

  1634. faith for

  1635. the hope

  1636. that you

  1637. have,

  1638. with

  1639. gentleness

  1640. and respect,

  1641. having a

  1642. good

  1643. conscience.

  1644. the rest

  1645. of that

  1646. verse,

  1647. so that

  1648. when you

  1649. are

  1650. slandered,

  1651. those who

  1652. revile your

  1653. good behavior

  1654. in Christ

  1655. may be put

  1656. to shame.

  1657. The key

  1658. word here,

  1659. key words

  1660. here are

  1661. in Christ.

  1662. Does your

  1663. reaction,

  1664. does your

  1665. defense,

  1666. does the

  1667. way you

  1668. live your

  1669. life fit

  1670. within the

  1671. statement

  1672. in Christ?

  1673. Are you

  1674. living in

  1675. Christ?

  1676. Does your

  1677. life lean

  1678. towards sin

  1679. or towards

  1680. righteousness?

  1681. Now,

  1682. Jamie and I

  1683. had the

  1684. great opportunity

  1685. to take our

  1686. kids to see

  1687. the Lorax

  1688. last night.

  1689. So,

  1690. if they all

  1691. were at the

  1692. wedding and

  1693. you didn't

  1694. see us at

  1695. the reception,

  1696. that's where

  1697. we were.

  1698. We were at

  1699. the movie

  1700. theater.

  1701. There's a

  1702. line in

  1703. the movie

  1704. that's very

  1705. applicable to

  1706. this.

  1707. The Lorax

  1708. asks the

  1709. once-ler,

  1710. he says,

  1711. which way

  1712. does a

  1713. tree fall?

  1714. And the

  1715. once-ler says,

  1716. I don't

  1717. know.

  1718. And the

  1719. Lorax

  1720. responds by

  1721. saying,

  1722. it falls

  1723. whichever way

  1724. it's leaning.

  1725. Be careful

  1726. which way

  1727. you lean.

  1728. So,

  1729. for you

  1730. and for

  1731. me,

  1732. which way

  1733. does your

  1734. life lean?

  1735. Sin

  1736. or

  1737. righteousness?

  1738. If a

  1739. life is in

  1740. Christ,

  1741. that means

  1742. your life

  1743. through the

  1744. gospel leans

  1745. towards

  1746. righteousness.

  1747. His term

  1748. in good

  1749. conscience

  1750. does not

  1751. mean that

  1752. you've got

  1753. a good

  1754. credit score.

  1755. It doesn't

  1756. mean that

  1757. you have

  1758. good

  1759. relationships

  1760. with your

  1761. co-workers

  1762. or you

  1763. can sleep

  1764. well at

  1765. night

  1766. or you

  1767. don't

  1768. believe in

  1769. the Easter

  1770. Bunny or

  1771. Santa Claus.

  1772. None of

  1773. that.

  1774. It has to

  1775. deal with

  1776. our

  1777. relationship

  1778. with God.

  1779. Because of

  1780. Christ and

  1781. His work

  1782. on the

  1783. cross,

  1784. we can

  1785. live in

  1786. God's

  1787. presence

  1788. clothed in

  1789. Christ,

  1790. clothed in

  1791. His

  1792. righteousness.

  1793. To have a

  1794. good conscience

  1795. means that

  1796. we stand

  1797. firm in

  1798. our knowledge

  1799. of Christ's

  1800. work for

  1801. us on the

  1802. cross and

  1803. our standing

  1804. with God.

  1805. What Paul

  1806. repeatedly says

  1807. to the church

  1808. in Corinth

  1809. talking about

  1810. their conscience,

  1811. where they

  1812. think they

  1813. are.

  1814. Our sins

  1815. all have

  1816. been forgiven.

  1817. We are

  1818. children of

  1819. God,

  1820. every single

  1821. one of

  1822. them.

  1823. We stand

  1824. as if none

  1825. have ever

  1826. been committed,

  1827. as if we

  1828. are perfect.

  1829. And in

  1830. fact,

  1831. we are

  1832. because of

  1833. Christ and

  1834. His

  1835. perfection

  1836. and His

  1837. righteousness.

  1838. There's a

  1839. saying,

  1840. and we've

  1841. got

  1842. presidential

  1843. campaign going

  1844. on this

  1845. year,

  1846. and there's

  1847. a saying

  1848. that says

  1849. we all

  1850. have

  1851. skeletons

  1852. in our

  1853. closet.

  1854. We all

  1855. have things

  1856. that are

  1857. in there

  1858. that we're

  1859. just ashamed

  1860. of,

  1861. things we've

  1862. done,

  1863. things we've

  1864. thought,

  1865. things we've

  1866. whatever.

  1867. Well,

  1868. politicians,

  1869. you'll notice,

  1870. ramping up

  1871. now,

  1872. and they've

  1873. already been

  1874. doing it,

  1875. they're

  1876. starting to

  1877. pull

  1878. skeletons

  1879. out of

  1880. the opposing

  1881. politicians'

  1882. closets.

  1883. Well,

  1884. this guy

  1885. had affairs,

  1886. and this

  1887. guy doesn't

  1888. do this,

  1889. or this

  1890. guy,

  1891. whatever,

  1892. and on

  1893. and on

  1894. and on.

  1895. They try

  1896. to sway

  1897. us as

  1898. voters to

  1899. vote for

  1900. who they

  1901. want us

  1902. to vote

  1903. for.

  1904. Well,

  1905. here's the

  1906. reality.

  1907. Sure,

  1908. we all

  1909. have skeletons

  1910. in our

  1911. closet.

  1912. We all

  1913. have

  1914. something

  1915. we've

  1916. done

  1917. that

  1918. we're

  1919. ashamed

  1920. of.

  1921. But

  1922. because of

  1923. Christ,

  1924. because of

  1925. what He's

  1926. done,

  1927. those

  1928. skeletons

  1929. don't exist.

  1930. Because He

  1931. has forgiven

  1932. us of

  1933. those sins.

  1934. He has

  1935. cleansed

  1936. us as if

  1937. we've never

  1938. committed

  1939. them.

  1940. So if we

  1941. live in good

  1942. conscience

  1943. with God,

  1944. those

  1945. skeletons

  1946. don't exist.

  1947. that's good

  1948. news.

  1949. There's

  1950. nothing to

  1951. fear.

  1952. Am I

  1953. saying go

  1954. and run

  1955. for politics?

  1956. No.

  1957. I'm not

  1958. saying that.

  1959. But I

  1960. am saying

  1961. even better,

  1962. you're

  1963. standing

  1964. before a

  1965. holy,

  1966. righteous

  1967. God is

  1968. right because

  1969. of Christ.

  1970. If you

  1971. are a

  1972. child of

  1973. God,

  1974. if you

  1975. know Jesus,

  1976. if you

  1977. have

  1978. surrendered

  1979. your life

  1980. to Him.

  1981. So see

  1982. what matters

  1983. is our

  1984. relationship

  1985. with God.

  1986. Not how

  1987. we live.

  1988. Not what

  1989. we think.

  1990. What matters

  1991. is our

  1992. relationship

  1993. with Him

  1994. and then

  1995. everything

  1996. else gets

  1997. affected by

  1998. that.

  1999. So if we

  2000. know Jesus

  2001. and the

  2002. gospel has

  2003. infected us,

  2004. our lives

  2005. will be

  2006. affected.

  2007. So we

  2008. can live

  2009. as fearless

  2010. and forgiven

  2011. children of

  2012. God.

  2013. and when

  2014. we do

  2015. our

  2016. reaction

  2017. to our

  2018. slanderers

  2019. can be

  2020. gentle,

  2021. respectful,

  2022. and godly

  2023. and good

  2024. conscience.

  2025. Verse 16,

  2026. there's two

  2027. words right in

  2028. the middle.

  2029. It says,

  2030. so that

  2031. having a

  2032. good conscience

  2033. so that

  2034. when you are

  2035. slandered,

  2036. those who

  2037. revile your

  2038. good behavior

  2039. in Christ

  2040. may be

  2041. put to

  2042. shame.

  2043. They'll be

  2044. put to

  2045. shame because

  2046. nothing they

  2047. say will be

  2048. true.

  2049. Nothing will

  2050. matter.

  2051. You have

  2052. lived the

  2053. life in

  2054. honor and

  2055. praise of

  2056. God.

  2057. In good

  2058. conscience

  2059. with Him,

  2060. therefore,

  2061. nothing matters.

  2062. And what

  2063. somebody says,

  2064. rumor,

  2065. slander,

  2066. will not

  2067. matter because

  2068. your standing

  2069. with God

  2070. is right.

  2071. Now,

  2072. the last

  2073. evidence,

  2074. the last

  2075. piece is,

  2076. do you

  2077. suffer for

  2078. doing good?

  2079. Do you

  2080. suffer for

  2081. doing good?

  2082. And this is

  2083. found in

  2084. verse 14

  2085. and verse

  2086. 17.

  2087. Remember,

  2088. Peter's

  2089. writing to

  2090. the churches

  2091. in Asia

  2092. Minor who

  2093. are already

  2094. suffering,

  2095. and in

  2096. fact,

  2097. worse is

  2098. headed their

  2099. way.

  2100. Peter knows

  2101. that more

  2102. is coming.

  2103. So in

  2104. verse 14

  2105. he says,

  2106. but even

  2107. if you

  2108. should suffer

  2109. for righteousness

  2110. sake,

  2111. you will

  2112. be blessed.

  2113. Have no

  2114. fear of

  2115. them,

  2116. nor be

  2117. troubled.

  2118. Verse 17,

  2119. for it is

  2120. better to

  2121. suffer for

  2122. doing good

  2123. if that

  2124. should be

  2125. God's

  2126. will than

  2127. for doing

  2128. evil.

  2129. Now,

  2130. as Christians,

  2131. there's going

  2132. to be times

  2133. of suffering.

  2134. There's going

  2135. to be

  2136. situations

  2137. that we're

  2138. going to

  2139. suffer

  2140. through.

  2141. Some

  2142. may be

  2143. persecution.

  2144. There are

  2145. two statements

  2146. that I've

  2147. read recently.

  2148. One says,

  2149. suffering

  2150. stalks the

  2151. believer

  2152. until this

  2153. present evil

  2154. age comes

  2155. to an end.

  2156. Another

  2157. one is

  2158. suffering

  2159. is an

  2160. indication

  2161. of God's

  2162. blessing.

  2163. We see

  2164. that in

  2165. James 1.

  2166. You guys

  2167. know,

  2168. James 1.

  2169. 2-4,

  2170. it says,

  2171. Count it

  2172. all joy,

  2173. my brothers,

  2174. when you

  2175. meet trials

  2176. of various

  2177. kinds,

  2178. for you

  2179. know that

  2180. the testing

  2181. of your

  2182. faith produces

  2183. steadfastness.

  2184. And let

  2185. steadfastness

  2186. hold its

  2187. full effect,

  2188. that you

  2189. may be

  2190. perfect and

  2191. complete,

  2192. lacking in

  2193. nothing.

  2194. Count it

  2195. all joy,

  2196. my brothers,

  2197. when you

  2198. meet trials

  2199. of various

  2200. kinds.

  2201. We are

  2202. going to

  2203. suffer.

  2204. The people

  2205. in Asia

  2206. minor are

  2207. suffering at

  2208. this time

  2209. that Peter

  2210. is writing

  2211. this.

  2212. There are

  2213. brothers and

  2214. sisters in

  2215. our time

  2216. who are

  2217. dying,

  2218. being murdered

  2219. for their

  2220. faith.

  2221. Now,

  2222. of course,

  2223. for most

  2224. of us in

  2225. here,

  2226. that's not

  2227. really a

  2228. reality.

  2229. We're kind

  2230. of sheltered

  2231. here.

  2232. We've got

  2233. freedom.

  2234. We've got

  2235. safety.

  2236. We've got

  2237. houses.

  2238. We've got a

  2239. lot of

  2240. things that

  2241. shelter us

  2242. here.

  2243. But it

  2244. doesn't mean

  2245. that sooner

  2246. or later

  2247. our faith

  2248. is going

  2249. to go

  2250. head on

  2251. against

  2252. someone or

  2253. something in

  2254. this world

  2255. that is

  2256. against what

  2257. we preach,

  2258. against what

  2259. we live.

  2260. See,

  2261. the reason

  2262. that we're

  2263. going to

  2264. suffer is

  2265. because Jesus

  2266. is the

  2267. antithesis to

  2268. the world.

  2269. He's the

  2270. opposite of

  2271. the world.

  2272. He preaches

  2273. life.

  2274. World is

  2275. death.

  2276. He is

  2277. light.

  2278. World is

  2279. dark.

  2280. And if

  2281. he's the

  2282. light and

  2283. he shines

  2284. the light

  2285. in the

  2286. dark,

  2287. you get

  2288. to see

  2289. all the

  2290. defects,

  2291. all the

  2292. warts,

  2293. all the

  2294. cracks,

  2295. all the

  2296. whatever.

  2297. Because

  2298. Jesus'

  2299. light has

  2300. been

  2301. shown.

  2302. The

  2303. defects

  2304. in

  2305. religion,

  2306. the

  2307. defects

  2308. in

  2309. philosophy,

  2310. the

  2311. defects

  2312. in

  2313. social

  2314. priorities,

  2315. the

  2316. defects

  2317. in

  2318. moralism,

  2319. the

  2320. defects

  2321. in

  2322. personal

  2323. responsibility.

  2324. Jesus is

  2325. the

  2326. light.

  2327. And if

  2328. we claim

  2329. to be

  2330. his,

  2331. then we

  2332. will

  2333. suffer

  2334. for

  2335. his

  2336. name.

  2337. There

  2338. will

  2339. be a

  2340. time.

  2341. The

  2342. fact

  2343. that we

  2344. are

  2345. Christians

  2346. and in

  2347. Romans

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  2348. chapter 8,

  2349. if God

  2350. is for

  2351. us,

  2352. then who

  2353. is there

  2354. to fear?

  2355. In

  2356. Revelation

    Revelation 2:10

  2357. chapter 2

  2358. verse 10,

  2359. Jesus gives

  2360. us some

  2361. encouragement.

  2362. He says,

  2363. do not

  2364. fear what

  2365. you are

  2366. about to

  2367. suffer.

  2368. Behold,

  2369. the devil

  2370. is about

  2371. to throw

  2372. some of

  2373. you into

  2374. prison,

  2375. that you

  2376. may be

  2377. tested,

  2378. and for

  2379. ten days

  2380. you will

  2381. have

  2382. tribulation.

  2383. Be

  2384. faithful

  2385. unto

  2386. death,

  2387. and I

  2388. will give

  2389. you the

  2390. crown

  2391. of life.

  2392. That's to

  2393. the church

  2394. in Smyrna

  2395. that he

  2396. writes to.

  2397. We

  2398. should not

  2399. go through

  2400. suffering

  2401. with our

  2402. heads

  2403. hung

  2404. low,

  2405. with the

  2406. poor me

  2407. attitude,

  2408. or the

  2409. poor me

  2410. signs all

  2411. over us.

  2412. We

  2413. should go

  2414. through

  2415. suffering

  2416. with

  2417. courage,

  2418. with

  2419. courage

  2420. and fight.

  2421. Courage in

  2422. order to be

  2423. faithful.

  2424. We must

  2425. face all

  2426. circumstances

  2427. with courage.

  2428. As Joshua

  2429. says in

  2430. Joshua

    Joshua 1 chapter mention

  2431. chapter 1,

  2432. only be

  2433. strong and

  2434. very

  2435. courageous,

  2436. being

  2437. careful to

  2438. do

  2439. according

  2440. to all

  2441. the law

  2442. that

  2443. Moses

  2444. my

  2445. servant

  2446. commanded

  2447. you.

  2448. Verse 9,

  2449. he repeats,

  2450. Have I

  2451. not

  2452. commanded

  2453. you?

  2454. Be

  2455. strong and

  2456. courageous.

  2457. Do not

  2458. be frightened

  2459. and do

  2460. not be

  2461. dismayed.

  2462. For the

  2463. Lord,

  2464. your God

  2465. is with

  2466. you

  2467. wherever

  2468. you go.

  2469. We

  2470. suffer

  2471. with

  2472. courage

  2473. because

  2474. it's

  2475. an

  2476. indication

  2477. of

  2478. God's

  2479. blessing

  2480. on our

  2481. lives.

  2482. We're

  2483. okay with

  2484. it because

  2485. we know

  2486. the end.

  2487. We're

  2488. okay with

  2489. it because

  2490. we know

  2491. the Savior.

  2492. So does

  2493. your life

  2494. give evidence

  2495. of a

  2496. godly

  2497. life?

  2498. Or do

  2499. you just

  2500. look good

  2501. coming off

  2502. the bus?

  2503. Do you

  2504. look like

  2505. something that

  2506. you're not?

  2507. As our

  2508. community groups

  2509. gather,

  2510. as we pray

  2511. through

  2512. opportunities

  2513. to share,

  2514. to reach

  2515. our community

  2516. for Jesus?

  2517. Do we

  2518. just look

  2519. good coming

  2520. off the

  2521. bus?

  2522. Do we

  2523. just have

  2524. good

  2525. intentions?

  2526. Do we

  2527. just carry

  2528. our Bible

  2529. in our

  2530. left hand

  2531. and not

  2532. our right

  2533. hand?

  2534. Do we

  2535. preach

  2536. and say

  2537. certain

  2538. words?

  2539. Do we

  2540. look good

  2541. coming off

  2542. the bus

  2543. or do we

  2544. actually live

  2545. it out?

  2546. Has our

  2547. life been

  2548. changed?

  2549. by the

  2550. gospel.

  2551. I pray

  2552. that all

  2553. of us

  2554. have a

  2555. passion

  2556. for what

  2557. is good.

  2558. That we

  2559. are ready

  2560. to defend

  2561. the questions

  2562. of our

  2563. faith.

  2564. That Christ

  2565. is set

  2566. apart in

  2567. our hearts

  2568. as Lord.

  2569. That we

  2570. live with a

  2571. good conscience

  2572. and that all

  2573. of us

  2574. suffer with

  2575. courage

  2576. and fear

  2577. of God

  2578. alone.

  2579. Let's pray

  2580. together.

  2581. Amen.

  2582. Amen.

  2583. Amen.
