  1. All right. Well, I was going to suggest the same, but I didn't know how to, so I'm glad Wes decided to do that.

  2. I'm thankful for talented musicians. I think it's rather amazing that Wes broke a string or two, maybe, I heard.

  3. And that was his harmonica guitar playing debut, and he carried on just the same.

  4. So we appreciate that, Wes. A very good morning to you.

  5. If you'll take out your copy of God's Word and turn with me to Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  6. But it's very, very good to be back with you today.

  7. You may or may not know this, but I wasn't here last week because I had a stomach bug,

  8. and I appreciate the concern and the prayers of everyone who knew that and was worried about me.

  9. Please keep praying for our family. You may notice that the rest of my family is not here this morning.

  10. Our house over the past couple of weeks has kind of felt like a health clinic and not a home.

  11. We have another little guy sick now.

  12. Cademan yesterday, we took him to the park, and rather than his normal joyful self to be at the park,

  13. he walked around with his arms hanging like this and just walked around,

  14. at which point we thought, something's wrong with Cade.

  15. And got him home, and he had 103 temperature.

  16. We laid him down at 12.15, and he took a five-hour nap.

  17. And we went back in and checked on him at 5.15.

  18. And, I mean, I don't know how much he actually slept during all that time.

  19. We went in there, and he was laying on his back in his crib, just staring at the ceiling.

  20. And so we've given him medication.

  21. He's doing much, much better this morning.

  22. But that's where the family is, and we're ready for a little relief from illness around our house.

  23. So please keep them in your prayers.

  24. Let's read this text together.

  25. This morning, I'm going to be focusing our attention on verses 14 through 17,

  26. but I want to include in our reading verse 13.

  27. I really want these five verses, and although I'm going to be focusing on four of them,

  28. I want you to include verse 13 in your minds.

  29. I really want you to take these home and meditate on them, carry them with you in the coming weeks.

  30. I believe it'll have a profound effect on your life if you do.

  31. So let's read together, beginning chapter 8, verse 13.

  32. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die.

  33. But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

  34. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

  35. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear,

  36. but you have received the spirit of adoption as a son by whom we cry, Abba, Father.

  37. The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

  38. And if children, then heirs.

  39. Heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him,

  40. in order that we may also be glorified with him.

  41. Please join me in prayer.

  42. Father God, we thank you for the blessing of your word.

  43. We thank you that you sent us Christ, your word embodied.

  44. And we also thank you for the written word that we can study this morning.

  45. And I pray, Father, that today the truths of these four verses will not be lost on us.

  46. That they will affect us in a deep way.

  47. And an understanding of who we are in Christ will cause us to live as Christ lived.

  48. In spite of all my preparation, I am incapable of changing hearts.

  49. No amazing thing I can say or say anything in an amazing way

  50. will cause anyone to think any differently unless your spirit intercedes.

  51. So I pray, Father, that you will do so this morning.

  52. That you will be at work in our lives.

  53. That we will all believe the truth of your word this morning.

  54. And I pray this in the precious name of Christ.

  55. Amen.

  56. So, Paul in chapter 8 has been talking to us about life in the Spirit.

  57. What that looks like.

  58. We have been justified by faith and we now have the Spirit of God.

  59. And how is it that our life should look in light of the great truth of the Gospel?

  60. And how is it that we live by the Spirit?

  61. And he turns to kind of conclude that section to speak of our sonship.

  62. This great doctrine of our adoption as sons in Christ.

  63. And it is a precious, precious truth.

  64. And so, I want to show you from these four verses, verses 14 through 17 this morning, three things.

  65. Number one, if you have placed your faith in Christ, then you are a son of God.

  66. If you have placed your faith, saving faith, in the personal work of Jesus Christ,

  67. then you are counted as a son of God.

  68. And you have His Spirit dwelling within you.

  69. The Spirit of God then dwells within you and you are a son of God.

  70. So, how is it that we live righteously before God?

  71. It is by His Spirit.

  72. Because we will be led by Him if we are sons of God.

  73. The parallel text to this text is found in Galatians 4, verses 4 through 6.

    Galatians 4:4–6

  74. And it reads,

  75. But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of woman, born under the law,

  76. to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.

  77. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.

  78. So you are no longer a slave, but a son.

  79. And if a son, then an heir through God.

  80. So we see that the Spirit generates within us two changes in our attitude toward God.

  81. We see that we are no longer slaves, but sons.

  82. Our text in Romans says,

  83. We did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall into fear,

  84. but we received the spirit of adoption as sons.

  85. And so we see this change that's generated within us.

  86. Number one, we now have, as Christians, a humble submission to Jesus' Lordship.

  87. A humble submission to Jesus' Lordship.

  88. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul wrote,

  89. Therefore, I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says,

  90. Jesus is accursed.

  91. And no one can say, Jesus is Lord, except in the Holy Spirit.

  92. So the Spirit of God generates in us this new attitude toward Christ.

  93. We recognize humbly that Jesus is Lord.

  94. We can't do so otherwise.

  95. And we submit to that Lordship.

  96. Number two, the Spirit generates within us a bold and childlike confidence.

  97. In Mark 14, 36, Jesus says,

  98. Abba, Father, all things are possible for you.

  99. Remove this cup from me, yet not what I will, but what you will.

  100. And we know this is the prayer he prays in the Garden of Gethsemane,

  101. before he's to be delivered to Pilate to be crucified.

  102. Abba, Father, all things are possible for you.

  103. And here's where Paul is borrowing this language,

  104. this terminology of Abba, Father.

  105. It's this bold, childlike confidence.

  106. The word Abba is actually the Hebrew word,

  107. which you've probably commonly heard as Daddy.

  108. was that endearing term that Jewish people called their fathers, Daddy.

  109. And I recognize fully now as a father,

  110. and as a father of a son who says Daddy to me,

  111. that he's laying a claim on me when he says Daddy.

  112. I am Cade's provider, and I'm his protector.

  113. When Cade comes to me and says Daddy,

  114. he's coming to me because he knows that I love him,

  115. and I want what's best for him.

  116. When Cade's doing his own thing,

  117. he never includes me in that process.

  118. But when Cade needs the love of his father,

  119. he comes to me saying Daddy.

  120. The English word we have here for father in this phrase,

  121. Abba, Father, is the Greek word pater.

  122. And it means literally father in the Greek,

  123. but that terminology would have been

  124. giving the great reverence and respect

  125. that a father deserved.

  126. So this Abba, Father,

  127. is as if what we're claiming when we say this

  128. is that He is mine, God is mine, Abba,

  129. and I am His Father.

  130. What a precious truth.

  131. If we could just take hold of that

  132. and believe it this day,

  133. believe our lives would look radically different.

  134. Another way we can say this,

  135. as we saw in 1 Corinthians 12, 3,

  136. Jesus is Lord and God is my Father.

  137. What a great thing to proclaim.

  138. And out of this humble confidence,

  139. we're empowered to live

  140. as the children of God ought to.

  141. Now, ladies, it's important for you

  142. to see and understand

  143. that Paul is not being sexist

  144. when he speaks of our adoption.

  145. As sons.

  146. The Roman Greek understanding of adoption

  147. played a major part

  148. in his writing here.

  149. Adoption was something

  150. that was incredibly important

  151. in this culture.

  152. And someone who was adopted

  153. could not be unadopted.

  154. Did you know that's the case

  155. with our adoption laws?

  156. That when a child is adopted,

  157. that child can never be unadopted.

  158. A child,

  159. if I was in a situation

  160. where I could no longer care for Cade,

  161. I could drop him off someplace

  162. and say,

  163. I no longer could be this child's father.

  164. But if I were to have adopted Cade,

  165. I can't do that any longer.

  166. The law does not permit me

  167. to unfather that child.

  168. Substantial for our understanding

  169. of who we are in Christ.

  170. That there is nothing

  171. and no one

  172. that can take us out of his hand.

  173. We have been adopted.

  174. It has been sealed for us

  175. forever

  176. to be sons of God.

  177. Now,

  178. in the Greek culture,

  179. being a son of a father

  180. meant a lot.

  181. It meant that you were to be

  182. a herald of the father.

  183. You were to be

  184. a reflection

  185. of who the father was.

  186. You were meant

  187. to show the father's character

  188. in the community.

  189. In the same way,

  190. as Christians,

  191. we are called

  192. to do just that.

  193. to show the world

  194. who our father is

  195. by properly reflecting

  196. his character.

  197. And we'll speak about that

  198. more in a moment.

  199. But it was

  200. a substantial thing

  201. to understand

  202. that when

  203. a son

  204. was adopted,

  205. he was asked

  206. to do the very same thing.

  207. So the father

  208. had come

  209. to this orphan child

  210. and adopted the son

  211. and given him

  212. the full rights

  213. to his inheritance

  214. and to the bearing

  215. of his character

  216. as one who wasn't adopted.

  217. So ladies,

  218. you are,

  219. in this cultural context,

  220. a son of God.

  221. You want to be

  222. a son of God.

  223. Paul wasn't sexist,

  224. but he was speaking

  225. to a very masculine-dominated

  226. culture.

  227. So he was using

  228. the language

  229. that they would have understood

  230. and would have found precious.

  231. the ladies

  232. who read this letter

  233. or had this letter read

  234. to them

  235. would have said,

  236. me,

  237. a son

  238. of God,

  239. would have been

  240. substantial

  241. and mind-blowing

  242. for them.

  243. So as

  244. the sons of God,

  245. number two,

  246. if you are

  247. a son of God,

  248. then

  249. you will live

  250. as a son of God.

  251. That's the implication here.

  252. We see,

  253. verse 14,

  254. that those who are led

  255. by the Spirit

  256. of God

  257. are sons

  258. of God.

  259. Now,

  260. what he's trying to give us

  261. is some empirical data,

  262. some way that we can observe

  263. who the sons of God are.

  264. Those who are led

  265. by the Spirit

  266. into righteousness,

  267. verse 13,

  268. to put to death

  269. the deeds of the body,

  270. those who are

  271. killing sin

  272. and living to God,

  273. those are sons of God.

  274. That's the exterior measure

  275. of that thing.

  276. But that is not

  277. what makes us sons.

  278. Living like sons

  279. does not make us sons.

  280. Being sons

  281. causes us

  282. to live

  283. like sons.

  284. You know,

  285. it's one of my great

  286. struggles

  287. to find the perfect analogy.

  288. And I always say to you

  289. that analogies

  290. always fall short.

  291. And they often do.

  292. And so,

  293. if you're trying to come up

  294. with a great analogy

  295. for this,

  296. and I've had a few

  297. that came closer

  298. than others,

  299. and I think the favorite

  300. one that came into my head,

  301. as you can see,

  302. I'm attempting

  303. to grow a beard.

  304. I don't know

  305. that I'm doing

  306. a great job of it,

  307. but certainly,

  308. growing a beard

  309. does not make me a man.

  310. But being a man,

  311. I can grow a beard.

  312. Now,

  313. that falls short

  314. because not all men

  315. can grow beards.

  316. Some men

  317. I respect deeply.

  318. Wes,

  319. being one of them,

  320. gave it a good shot

  321. for seven months,

  322. and it was bad.

  323. But he's a man

  324. I respect.

  325. So the analogy

  326. falls short.

  327. But here's another one

  328. for you.

  329. This is a rock.

  330. And the rock

  331. always does its job

  332. perfectly.

  333. Without fail,

  334. this rock,

  335. I'm going to try

  336. to set it up the edge

  337. here so you can see it,

  338. this rock

  339. is just sitting here.

  340. Doing the very thing

  341. that this rock

  342. was created

  343. to do.

  344. This is what it was doing

  345. when I found it

  346. in the parking lot.

  347. Doing nothing else.

  348. But the fact that

  349. this rock

  350. is just sitting here

  351. does not make it a rock,

  352. but it's a rock,

  353. therefore it just sits here.

  354. Are you with me

  355. on that?

  356. Now,

  357. there are some

  358. exterior things

  359. we can see

  360. about the rock

  361. that let us know

  362. it's a rock.

  363. This rock

  364. is just sitting here

  365. would be one.

  366. It's gray.

  367. The fact that it's

  368. not jumping around

  369. in trees

  370. lets me know

  371. it's not a squirrel.

  372. There are things

  373. I can observe about it

  374. and say,

  375. that's a rock

  376. fit for my analogy

  377. this morning.

  378. I will pick it up

  379. and take it inside

  380. with me.

  381. And I should have

  382. washed it off.

  383. It's getting my Bible

  384. all dirty.

  385. But nonetheless,

  386. we can observe

  387. that it's a rock.

  388. But it's because

  389. it's a rock

  390. that it does

  391. its job perfectly.

  392. It just does

  393. what it was made

  394. to do.

  395. And that's how

  396. we should be

  397. like the rock.

  398. As sons of God,

  399. we should live

  400. as the sons of God.

  401. Now,

  402. of course,

  403. we carry around

  404. the baggage

  405. of our flesh.

  406. It's the point

  407. that Paul's making

  408. in verse 13

  409. that we should be

  410. putting to death

  411. those things in us.

  412. That flesh,

  413. those deeds.

  414. We should be putting

  415. that to death

  416. and living to God.

  417. It's the great

  418. truth that someday

  419. will be delivered

  420. from our body

  421. of flesh

  422. that should be

  423. so profound

  424. in your life.

  425. If you understand

  426. how you ought

  427. to live,

  428. how your life

  429. should look,

  430. and how vastly

  431. you fail at that,

  432. being delivered

  433. from that someday

  434. should blow

  435. your mind.

  436. Someday,

  437. my body

  438. will be glorified

  439. and I will be

  440. set free

  441. from this

  442. weight

  443. of my flesh.

  444. So,

  445. how does it look?

  446. What should our lives

  447. be looking like

  448. as the sons

  449. of God?

  450. Number one,

  451. we should be

  452. putting to death

  453. the deeds of the flesh.

  454. Verse 13,

  455. as I showed you,

  456. and a couple of weeks

  457. ago I showed you

  458. that if we're going

  459. to put off

  460. the old self,

  461. we must put on

  462. the new.

  463. We must live

  464. to God.

  465. And we have a great

  466. example of that

  467. in Christ.

  468. The only man

  469. who ever lived

  470. a sinless life.

  471. Let's take our

  472. cues from Him.

  473. And let's live

  474. in righteousness.

  475. And number two,

  476. and here in our text,

  477. we will suffer

  478. as Christ

  479. suffered.

  480. You see there

  481. in verse 17,

  482. we'll be heirs

  483. with Christ

  484. provided we suffer

  485. with Him

  486. in order that we

  487. may also

  488. be glorified

  489. with Him.

  490. We're going to

  491. celebrate that

  492. this week,

  493. aren't we,

  494. on Good Friday?

  495. The ultimate

  496. and final

  497. suffering of Christ

  498. on the cross,

  499. the bearing of

  500. God's wrath

  501. for our sin.

  502. Let's look

  503. quickly

  504. in the Scriptures.

  505. I'll encourage you

  506. to jot these down.

  507. What was said

  508. of suffering,

  509. that those

  510. who are sons

  511. of God,

  512. Christians,

  513. will suffer,

  514. Jesus said it

  515. in Luke 9,

  516. 23,

  517. if anyone

  518. would come

  519. after me,

  520. let him deny

  521. himself and

  522. take up his

  523. cross daily

  524. and follow me.

  525. That verse

  526. has nothing

  527. to do with

  528. dieting

  529. or any of

  530. the other

  531. various things

  532. we want to

  533. apply it to

  534. in our life.

  535. That's not a

  536. cross.

  537. A cross is

  538. where you die.

  539. A cross is

  540. where you

  541. suffer and

  542. bleed out.

  543. It's not

  544. the place

  545. where we

  546. inconvenience

  547. ourselves

  548. slightly

  549. for our

  550. Savior.

  551. Paul said it,

  552. 2 Timothy 3,

  553. 12,

  554. Indeed,

  555. all who

  556. desire to

  557. live a

  558. godly life

  559. in Christ

  560. Jesus

  561. will be

  562. persecuted.

  563. The author

  564. of Hebrews

  565. said it,

  566. Hebrews 12,

  567. 6 and 7,

  568. For the Lord

  569. disciplines the

  570. one he loves

  571. and chastises

  572. every son

  573. whom he receives.

  574. It is for

  575. discipline that

  576. you have to

  577. endure.

  578. God is

  579. treating you

  580. as sons.

  581. For what

  582. son is there

  583. whom his

  584. father does

  585. not

  586. discipline?

  587. Peter said

  588. it,

  589. 1 Peter 4,

  590. 13,

  591. But rejoice

  592. insofar as

  593. you share

  594. Christ's

  595. sufferings,

  596. that you

  597. may also

  598. rejoice and

  599. be glad

  600. when his

  601. glory is

  602. revealed.

  603. Take joy

  604. in the fact

  605. that you

  606. suffer in

  607. this world

  608. because it

  609. is evidence,

  610. that's what

  611. he's saying,

  612. it is evidence

  613. that you are

  614. a son of

  615. God.

  616. Because if

  617. you suffer

  618. now,

  619. you will

  620. one day

  621. rejoice and

  622. be glad

  623. at the

  624. revelation

  625. of his

  626. glory.

  627. Because

  628. you're

  629. a son

  630. of God.

  631. And what

  632. kind of

  633. suffering is

  634. he speaking

  635. of here?

  636. I believe

  637. all kinds.

  638. The

  639. persecution,

  640. calamity,

  641. disease,

  642. death,

  643. those things

  644. that sin

  645. bought the

  646. world.

  647. We ought

  648. to suffer

  649. all the

  650. time in

  651. this world.

  652. Look at

  653. the following

  654. verses in

  655. Romans later.

  656. As the

  657. creation

  658. groans,

  659. for the

  660. return of

  661. Christ,

  662. so should

  663. we.

  664. This world

  665. ought to

  666. feel so

  667. foreign and

  668. strange to

  669. us that

  670. we long

  671. for Christ

  672. to return

  673. and set

  674. all things

  675. right.

  676. Suffering

  677. ought to be

  678. a part of

  679. our daily

  680. activity.

  681. Living in

  682. a place that

  683. we don't

  684. belong.

  685. On top

  686. of that,

  687. we're going

  688. to deal

  689. with

  690. sicknesses.

  691. My family

  692. is going

  693. through that

  694. now.

  695. consequence

  696. of the

  697. fall.

  698. We're going

  699. to deal

  700. with

  701. persecution.

  702. If you

  703. live godly

  704. in this

  705. world,

  706. people will

  707. not like

  708. you for

  709. it.

  710. You will

  711. be either

  712. the fragrance

  713. of life

  714. or you'll

  715. be the

  716. fragrance

  717. of death.

  718. And those

  719. who are

  720. dying do

  721. not like

  722. that.

  723. You will

  724. be

  725. persecuted.

  726. how do

  727. we

  728. bear up

  729. under

  730. that

  731. kind

  732. of

  733. thing?

  734. How do

  735. we

  736. live in

  737. this

  738. world

  739. so

  740. uncomfortable?

  741. What he's

  742. trying to

  743. tell us,

  744. right?

  745. Because we're

  746. sons of

  747. God.

  748. And if

  749. we're

  750. sons of

  751. God,

  752. then we're

  753. co-heirs

  754. with Christ.

  755. We are,

  756. as he is

  757. an inheritor

  758. of God,

  759. we are

  760. also

  761. inheritors.

  762. Verse 16,

  763. the Spirit

  764. bears witness

  765. that we're

  766. children of

  767. God,

  768. and if

  769. children,

  770. then heirs.

  771. Heirs of

  772. God and

  773. fellow

  774. heirs with

  775. Christ.

  776. What are

  777. we heirs

  778. of?

  779. We're

  780. heirs of

  781. a limitless

  782. inheritance.

  783. And I'm

  784. going to

  785. answer that

  786. more completely,

  787. at least in

  788. part.

  789. I don't

  790. even know

  791. if this

  792. is a

  793. complete

  794. answer to

  795. what we're

  796. heirs of,

  797. but at

  798. least in

  799. part.

  800. This is

  801. point number

  802. three,

  803. by the way.

  804. If you're

  805. a son of

  806. God,

  807. then you

  808. have a

  809. limitless

  810. inheritance.

  811. And there's

  812. three things

  813. we inherit

  814. at least.

  815. Number one,

  816. the world.

  817. Romans 4,

  818. 13,

  819. Paul wrote,

  820. for the promise

  821. to Abraham

  822. and his

  823. offspring that

  824. he would be

  825. heir of

  826. the world

  827. did not

  828. come through

  829. the law,

  830. but through

  831. the righteousness

  832. of faith.

  833. And so if

  834. you have placed

  835. your faith in

  836. Christ,

  837. you're a

  838. co-heir with

  839. Abraham,

  840. and Abraham

  841. was promised

  842. what?

  843. The world.

  844. Psalm 24,

  845. 1 says,

  846. the earth

  847. is the

  848. Lord's

  849. and the

  850. fullness

  851. thereof,

  852. the world

  853. and those

  854. who dwell

  855. therein.

  856. So the

  857. whole world

  858. belongs to

  859. Jesus Christ

  860. and we

  861. are a

  862. co-heir

  863. with him.

  864. Psalm 2,

  865. 8,

  866. ask of me

  867. and I

  868. will make

  869. the nations

  870. your heritage

  871. and the ends

  872. of the earth

  873. your possession.

  874. And this

  875. is the

  876. father asking

  877. the son

  878. in Psalm

  879. 2,

  880. 8,

  881. ask of me

  882. and I

  883. will make

  884. the nations

  885. your heritage.

  886. So the

  887. world will

  888. someday be

  889. ours

  890. because we

  891. belong to

  892. the one

  893. to whom

  894. the world

  895. belongs.

  896. Number 2,

  897. we will

  898. inherit God

  899. himself,

  900. which we

  901. get to

  902. experience in

  903. part now.

  904. The great

  905. work of God

  906. going on

  907. around us,

  908. our invitation

  909. to be involved

  910. in that work,

  911. the invitation

  912. to pray,

  913. to share

  914. our faith,

  915. spread the

  916. gospel around

  917. the world,

  918. is God's

  919. great love

  920. of us

  921. to involve

  922. us in

  923. what he's

  924. doing,

  925. to give

  926. us some

  927. of himself.

  928. But one

  929. day,

  930. we will

  931. behold him

  932. fully.

  933. Now,

  934. dimly as

  935. in a mirror,

  936. but one

  937. day we

  938. will see

  939. him in

  940. all of

  941. his glory.

  942. Romans 5,

  943. 2,

  944. B,

  945. the second

  946. half of

  947. 5,

  948. 2,

  949. says,

  950. we rejoice

  951. in the

  952. hope of

  953. the glory

  954. of God.

  955. We find

  956. our great

  957. joy in

  958. the knowledge

  959. that someday

  960. we'll behold

  961. the glory

  962. of God.

  963. Revelation

  964. 21,

  965. 3,

  966. is a picture

  967. of that

  968. glory.

  969. And I

  970. heard a

  971. loud voice

  972. from the

  973. throne saying,

  974. behold,

  975. the dwelling

  976. place of

  977. God is

  978. with man.

  979. He will

  980. dwell with

  981. them,

  982. and they

  983. will be

  984. his people,

  985. and God

  986. himself will

  987. be with

  988. them,

  989. as their

  990. God.

  991. Psalm 73,

  992. 25,

  993. and 26,

  994. one of my

  995. favorites,

  996. the Psalm

  997. of Asaph.

  998. He wrote,

  999. Whom have

  1000. I in

  1001. heaven but

  1002. you?

  1003. And there

  1004. is nothing

  1005. on earth

  1006. that I

  1007. desire beside

  1008. you.

  1009. My flesh

  1010. and my

  1011. heart may

  1012. fail,

  1013. but God

  1014. is the

  1015. strength of

  1016. my heart

  1017. and my

  1018. portion

  1019. forever.

  1020. My full

  1021. satisfaction

  1022. forever.

  1023. forever.

  1024. So,

  1025. we get to

  1026. inherit the

  1027. world,

  1028. we get to

  1029. inherit God

  1030. himself,

  1031. and we

  1032. get to

  1033. inherit

  1034. redeemed

  1035. and glorified

  1036. bodies.

  1037. Romans 8,

  1038. 23 speaks

  1039. of the

  1040. redemption

  1041. of our

  1042. bodies,

  1043. and I

  1044. believe that

  1045. this is

  1046. what Paul

  1047. is trying

  1048. to say

  1049. in verse

  1050. 17,

  1051. that we

  1052. will be

  1053. glorified

  1054. with

  1055. him.

  1056. I have

  1057. a body

  1058. that I

  1059. am so

  1060. happy is

  1061. going to

  1062. get replaced.

  1063. I am in

  1064. lots of

  1065. pain all

  1066. the time,

  1067. and I

  1068. won't take

  1069. the time

  1070. to tell

  1071. you why,

  1072. but I'm

  1073. in rather

  1074. excruciating

  1075. pain most

  1076. of my

  1077. days.

  1078. I am so

  1079. happy to

  1080. experience that

  1081. because this

  1082. is such a

  1083. precious truth

  1084. to me.

  1085. Someday,

  1086. my pain

  1087. will stop,

  1088. and I

  1089. will have a

  1090. new,

  1091. redeemed,

  1092. set right

  1093. body.

  1094. What a

  1095. glorious

  1096. truth

  1097. that is.

  1098. So,

  1099. we've

  1100. received,

  1101. as

  1102. Christians,

  1103. an

  1104. inheritance.

  1105. Shouldn't

  1106. this impact

  1107. the way

  1108. we live?

  1109. Shouldn't

  1110. this spur

  1111. us on

  1112. to live

  1113. as those

  1114. who are

  1115. called

  1116. sons of

  1117. God,

  1118. to cry

  1119. to God,

  1120. Abba,

  1121. Father,

  1122. Daddy,

  1123. whom I

  1124. love and

  1125. respect,

  1126. Jesus,

  1127. my Lord,

  1128. God,

  1129. my Father,

  1130. empower me

  1131. to live

  1132. by these

  1133. great truths

  1134. carried along

  1135. by your

  1136. Spirit,

  1137. the great

  1138. glory of

  1139. your name.

  1140. I hope

  1141. that today,

  1142. in large

  1143. part,

  1144. is an

  1145. encouragement

  1146. to you.

  1147. We've

  1148. experienced

  1149. some

  1150. chastisement

  1151. throughout

  1152. Romans so

  1153. far.

  1154. I hope

  1155. that today

  1156. you walk

  1157. out of

  1158. here filled

  1159. with joy

  1160. as a

  1161. Son of

  1162. God.

  1163. If you

  1164. have never

  1165. placed your

  1166. faith in

  1167. Christ,

  1168. saving faith,

  1169. a recognition

  1170. that you

  1171. are utterly

  1172. sinful,

  1173. there is no

  1174. part of you

  1175. that is not

  1176. sin apart

  1177. from Him,

  1178. that you

  1179. have been

  1180. separated

  1181. from God

  1182. forever.

  1183. forever,

  1184. unless

  1185. you place

  1186. your faith

  1187. in the

  1188. one who

  1189. bore the

  1190. wrath for

  1191. your sins.

  1192. You believe

  1193. that Jesus

  1194. is the

  1195. Son of

  1196. God,

  1197. and that

  1198. He died

  1199. on your

  1200. behalf.

  1201. If you

  1202. haven't done

  1203. that,

  1204. do that

  1205. this day.

  1206. Be filled

  1207. with the

  1208. joy of

  1209. being called

  1210. a Son of

  1211. God.

  1212. I think

  1213. that we

  1214. as American

  1215. Christians

  1216. have

  1217. issues with

  1218. our identity.

  1219. I think

  1220. that we

  1221. tack

  1222. Christianity

  1223. on to the

  1224. end of a

  1225. list of

  1226. many other

  1227. things that

  1228. we are.

  1229. And if

  1230. you do

  1231. that,

  1232. any of

  1233. those other

  1234. things you

  1235. think you

  1236. are have

  1237. become an

  1238. idol.

  1239. to you.

  1240. If you

  1241. say,

  1242. I am a

  1243. husband who

  1244. works hard

  1245. to provide

  1246. for my

  1247. family,

  1248. and I'm

  1249. a Christian.

  1250. Check your

  1251. heart in

  1252. that.

  1253. Because what

  1254. you ought to

  1255. say is,

  1256. I'm a

  1257. Christian and

  1258. a husband who

  1259. works hard

  1260. to provide

  1261. for my

  1262. family.

  1263. All of

  1264. our life

  1265. should be

  1266. encompassed in

  1267. our identity

  1268. in Christ.

  1269. We are

  1270. sons because

  1271. we've been

  1272. adopted.

  1273. We weren't

  1274. part of

  1275. his family

  1276. to begin

  1277. with,

  1278. but because

  1279. of what

  1280. Christ has

  1281. done,

  1282. we've been

  1283. adopted into

  1284. his family.

  1285. And it is

  1286. a glorious,

  1287. profound truth

  1288. that we should

  1289. treasure in

  1290. our hearts.

  1291. Please pray

  1292. with me.

  1293. a lot of
