  1. Take your copy of God's Word and turn to Romans chapter 8, where we'll spend our time this morning.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  2. At home, Sam and I have gotten in the habit of singing the doxology after we pray before our meal, hoping that Cade will learn it and learn it well.

  3. We don't sound nearly as nice as you guys all do together though, so I think you guys should all come to our house for dinner every night and help us sing that song.

  4. Because my leading it just is not nearly as beautiful.

  5. I'm really thankful today. I'm thankful first and foremost for the redemptive work of Christ on my behalf.

  6. I just feel unfettered this morning. I feel so free and unburdened because of the lack of slavery to sin this morning.

  7. I'm incredibly thankful this morning. On this day, six years ago, I married my lovely wife, Sam.

  8. So I'm really thankful for her. Thank you.

  9. And my family's here this morning. You guys know there's been a lot of sickness in our home.

  10. And I'm just really, really, really thankful that they get to actually be here.

  11. Both of my precious boys are here.

  12. I'm not stag this morning at church.

  13. So I'm thankful for all these things this morning.

  14. And I'm thankful that I get to preach this morning to you out of Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  15. We have, just to remind you, in Romans we've been venturing through this gospel presentation

  16. that Paul is giving to us.

  17. And he has said to us that the curse of sin has affected all humanity.

  18. We all bear that curse.

  19. And in addition to that, we've all sinned ourselves.

  20. So not only has the curse of Adam passed on to us, but we have brought our own condemnation because of our own sin.

  21. And therefore, none of us can escape the wrath of God on our own.

  22. Praise him for the propitiation of Christ.

  23. That he came and stood in our place.

  24. Bore God's wrath on our behalf.

  25. That if we will place our faith in that work of Jesus, we might be saved.

  26. We've seen now the effects of the gospel in chapters 6 and 7.

  27. And now into chapter 8, we get to learn about these positive effects of the gospel.

  28. The life that the Spirit has brought us.

  29. And we're looking together at the ministry of the Spirit.

  30. And we see that the Spirit in our lives ministers to us in regeneration.

  31. He gives us a new nature.

  32. We've been born in the Spirit.

  33. We see this in chapter 8, verse 5.

  34. I just won't read it to you.

  35. Chapter 8, verse 5.

  36. You can look at it.

  37. As well as in 1 Peter 1, 3-5, which says,

  38. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  39. According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again through the Spirit.

  40. To a living hope.

  41. To the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  42. To an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.

  43. And kept in heaven for you.

  44. Who by God's power, which is the work of the Spirit in us, are being guarded through faith.

  45. For a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

  46. We see also that the Spirit ministers to us in our lives through the process of sanctification.

  47. Sanctification, that process by which we are passing from one degree of glory to another.

  48. That we are becoming more perfect as we progress in our Christian living.

  49. So he ministers to us in sanctification.

  50. Chapter 8, verse 13.

  51. As well as Philippians 1, 6.

  52. Where Paul says,

  53. We are being moved steadily by the Spirit towards perfection.

  54. We also saw that last week that the Spirit ministers to us in our security unto glorification.

  55. So after we die, the work of the Spirit is our glorification.

  56. But up to that point is our security keeping us to that day.

  57. You can see that in chapter 8, verse 14.

  58. That he puts in us the Spirit of adoption.

  59. That we are called sons of God because he lives within us.

  60. As well as Ephesians 1, 13 and 14.

  61. Which reads,

  62. So last week we saw that Paul turned in verse 17 to begin to talk about suffering in the life of a Christian.

  63. And that suffering includes all of the things we encounter as Christians along the way.

  64. As we're moving towards glorification.

  65. It's all those things.

  66. So it's from the head cold I still kind of have this morning to martyrdom.

  67. It's all those things that are uncomfortable for us as we're in this process of being made perfect.

  68. And he gives to us the way that we bear up underneath that.

  69. Which is the hope of future glory.

  70. We saw last week a certain amount of groaning going on.

  71. He speaks to us of the creation groaning.

  72. Waiting eagerly to be restored.

  73. To be put back in the place that it was meant to be.

  74. And we saw that we as believers groan inwardly.

  75. We wait eagerly for the adoption of the Son.

  76. For the redemption of our bodies.

  77. That final state.

  78. And this morning's text, we're going to see the Spirit groan on our behalf.

  79. So let's read together.

  80. Beginning in verse 26 through verse 30.

  81. I know that you may be thinking me rather ambitious.

  82. But I hope by the end of this you'll understand why I'm going to take us that far this morning.

  83. Beginning in verse 26.

  84. Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

  85. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought.

  86. But the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.

  87. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit.

  88. Because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

  89. And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good.

  90. For those who are called according to his purpose.

  91. For those whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of a son.

  92. In order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

  93. And those whom he predestined, he also called.

  94. And those whom he called, he also justified.

  95. And those whom he justified, he also glorified.

  96. Let's pray together.

  97. Father God, we thank you for your word and the ministry it is to us.

  98. We thank you that you have planned the end from the beginning.

  99. We thank you that you're bringing it about through the personal work of Jesus Christ.

  100. And through the work of the Spirit in our lives.

  101. Father, we appeal to you this morning.

  102. That you might work in us a miracle in clear speaking and clear understanding.

  103. That you will provide both knowledge and understanding that yields wisdom in our lives.

  104. That we might live for you and exalt Christ in all that we do, even in the midst of our suffering.

  105. We pray this in the precious name of Christ, who gives us the ability to approach you and even pray to you.

  106. Amen.

  107. So, we see that he starts out this language in talking about the Spirit.

  108. He starts groaning on our behalf.

  109. And he speaks of our weakness.

  110. So, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

  111. And what does he mean by that is the first question that came to my mind as I began to study this text.

  112. Initially, I looked at verse 25.

  113. And verse 25 says,

  114. But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

  115. This future glory that's coming, we wait for it with patience.

  116. And so, I presume that the weakness he was talking about was when we fail in that.

  117. So, we, in his hope of glory, we are waiting.

  118. We are eagerly anticipating the coming hope of glory for us.

  119. And when we fail in that, the Spirit intercedes for us.

  120. But that's not actually what he means in this text.

  121. The word weakness here, the Greek term, is found in Romans 6.19.

  122. And Paul refers there, and it's translated in the ESV to our natural limitations.

  123. And John chapter 5, when Jesus is at the pool of Bethesda, there's the lame man.

    John 5 chapter mention

  124. And in verse 5, it says,

  125. One man was there who had been an invalid for 38 years.

  126. That term invalid is the same term weakness here.

  127. The inability of his body to walk.

  128. 1 Corinthians 15.43 and 44, speaking of resurrection, says,

  129. It is sown in dishonor.

  130. It is raised in glory.

  131. It is sown in weakness.

  132. Same word.

  133. It is raised in power.

  134. It is sown a natural body.

  135. It is raised a spiritual body.

  136. And so, what he's talking about here, when he says that the Spirit helps us in our weakness,

  137. is the frailty of our flesh, the burden of our sinful nature that we all carry around.

  138. So, does that include our failing to wait with patience for future glory?

  139. Absolutely, it does.

  140. But he's expanding beyond that and speaking much more broadly than that.

  141. Look at the very next sentence.

  142. He says,

  143. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought.

  144. So, in the middle of our suffering, we don't even know how to pray because we are so corrupted by our sin.

  145. That's what he's talking about here.

  146. He starts this sentence out by saying,

  147. Likewise.

  148. He talks out by saying,

  149. Likewise the Spirit helps us.

  150. So, what is the likewise he's referring to?

  151. Well, it's the groaning.

  152. It's referring back to verse 18, the eager longing of the creation,

  153. the creation groaning in the pains of childbirth.

  154. It's that same groaning, which is the way the Spirit helps us on our behalf.

  155. See that at the very heart of the Spirit of God within us

  156. is a longing for us to be made perfect.

  157. He desires that.

  158. And he groans on our behalf

  159. for such a thing

  160. to take place.

  161. And he groans with words,

  162. with a groaning that is

  163. too deep

  164. for words.

  165. Now, we in Protestant evangelicalism

  166. have really neglected

  167. the Holy Spirit.

  168. We make much of God the Father

  169. and much of God the Son,

  170. which we should do, and we should never cease doing.

  171. We can never talk too much

  172. about God the Father

  173. and about God the Son.

  174. But we do

  175. talk too little

  176. about the Spirit.

  177. Pentecostals have

  178. elevated

  179. the role of the Spirit

  180. in life.

  181. They have

  182. done so to the degree

  183. that they have

  184. relegated,

  185. they have diminished

  186. the Gospel itself.

  187. They talk

  188. often

  189. about

  190. the baptism of the Holy Spirit,

  191. very little

  192. about the Gospel.

  193. they've gotten it out of balance

  194. in that direction.

  195. I think we've done

  196. the same

  197. by not talking

  198. as much

  199. as we ought to

  200. about the work

  201. of the Holy Spirit.

  202. We should put him

  203. in his proper

  204. place

  205. as part

  206. of the Godhead.

  207. If you're like me,

  208. often in my life

  209. I think of the Holy Spirit

  210. as a minion

  211. of the Father

  212. and the Son

  213. doing

  214. doing the bidding.

  215. He is equally God

  216. dwelling within us.

  217. We need to see

  218. that that

  219. part of God

  220. dwells within us

  221. and grows

  222. for us,

  223. longs

  224. for us

  225. to be made

  226. perfect

  227. in the image

  228. of Christ.

  229. What an amazing

  230. reality

  231. that is.

  232. This does not

  233. mean

  234. that when we

  235. don't know

  236. how to pray

  237. we should

  238. begin to speak

  239. in gibberish.

  240. Should have

  241. bought a Honda

  242. but I bought

  243. a Yamaha.

  244. It's not what

  245. this text means.

  246. That's what the

  247. Pentecostals

  248. have done with it.

  249. That is not

  250. what this text

  251. means.

  252. And I hope

  253. to show you

  254. beyond that

  255. what it does mean.

  256. So we see

  257. that the Spirit

  258. then groans

  259. for us

  260. in verse 27

  261. according

  262. to the will

  263. of God.

  264. It intercedes

  265. for us,

  266. prays on our

  267. behalf

  268. according

  269. to the will

  270. of God.

  271. So we see

  272. clearly here

  273. that there's

  274. a conversation

  275. happening between

  276. the Spirit

  277. of God

  278. within us

  279. and God

  280. the Father.

  281. Now is that

  282. to the Spirit's

  283. benefit?

  284. If the Spirit's

  285. groaning,

  286. longing for

  287. our perfection,

  288. for the

  289. saints'

  290. perfection,

  291. does he

  292. have this

  293. prayer time

  294. with God

  295. so that he

  296. can feel

  297. a little better

  298. about the

  299. end results?

  300. Of course not.

  301. The Spirit

  302. of God

  303. knows exactly

  304. what will be

  305. accomplished.

  306. The Spirit

  307. of God

  308. prays,

  309. groans

  310. by the

  311. will of

  312. God.

  313. So the

  314. Spirit longing

  315. within us

  316. for perfection

  317. is not for

  318. his benefit,

  319. it's for

  320. ours.

  321. When we

  322. suffer and

  323. we don't

  324. know how

  325. to pray,

  326. the longing

  327. in our lives

  328. for the

  329. will of

  330. God,

  331. even when

  332. we don't

  333. know exactly

  334. what the

  335. prayer should

  336. be,

  337. it's for

  338. our benefit

  339. that we

  340. know the

  341. Spirit of

  342. God is

  343. moving us

  344. toward future

  345. glory.

  346. As I

  347. mentioned

  348. before,

  349. this is a

  350. chunk of

  351. Scripture.

  352. These verses,

  353. particularly

  354. verse 28,

  355. 29,

  356. and 30,

  357. are very

  358. expandable.

  359. Boy,

  360. can we

  361. preach some

  362. sermons out

  363. of those

  364. three verses.

  365. But keeping

  366. it in its

  367. context is

  368. why I'm

  369. going to

  370. take us

  371. that far.

  372. I want

  373. you to

  374. see that

  375. he's

  376. working

  377. these

  378. things

  379. for our

  380. good that

  381. we might

  382. hope in

  383. future glory

  384. and bear

  385. up under

  386. suffering.

  387. So,

  388. in verse

  389. 27,

  390. he says

  391. he prays,

  392. he intercedes

  393. for the

  394. saints

  395. according

  396. to the

  397. will

  398. of God.

  399. What is

  400. God's

  401. will for

  402. us?

  403. We see

  404. in verse

  405. 28,

  406. it talks

  407. of those

  408. who are

  409. called

  410. according

  411. to his

  412. purpose,

  413. and then

  414. verse 29,

  415. here's the

  416. answer,

  417. to be

  418. conformed

  419. to the

  420. image

  421. of his

  422. Son.

  423. And there

  424. you see

  425. again the

  426. longing of

  427. the Spirit

  428. to move

  429. us,

  430. to progress

  431. us,

  432. towards

  433. perfection.

  434. This is a

  435. Trinitarian

  436. activity,

  437. our future

  438. glory.

  439. God the

  440. Father

  441. planned it,

  442. God the

  443. Son provided

  444. for it,

  445. and God

  446. the Spirit

  447. protects it

  448. until it

  449. comes to

  450. pass.

  451. I want you

  452. to see that

  453. this morning.

  454. Verse 28,

  455. and we

  456. know that

  457. for those

  458. who love

  459. God,

  460. all things

  461. work together

  462. for good

  463. for those

  464. who are

  465. called

  466. according to

  467. his purpose.

  468. Now,

  469. this morning

  470. I want to

  471. give to

  472. you,

  473. and I

  474. believe it's

  475. what Paul

  476. intended here,

  477. a sense

  478. of your

  479. security

  480. in Christ.

  481. But I

  482. don't want

  483. to give

  484. to you

  485. false

  486. security

  487. at all.

  488. So,

  489. how is it

  490. that things

  491. work together

  492. for good?

  493. For whom?

  494. For those

  495. who love

  496. God.

  497. John MacArthur

  498. in a sermon

  499. on this text

  500. says,

  501. we love

  502. God.

  503. I hope

  504. you're one

  505. of those.

  506. We love

  507. God.

  508. We love

  509. Jesus Christ.

  510. It is a

  511. love that

  512. meditates

  513. on his

  514. majestic

  515. glory.

  516. It is a

  517. love that

  518. longs to

  519. worship,

  520. to sing

  521. his praises.

  522. It is a

  523. love that

  524. seeks the

  525. fellowship of

  526. others who

  527. love him.

  528. It is a

  529. love that

  530. loves those

  531. who love

  532. him and

  533. are loved

  534. by him.

  535. It is a

  536. love that

  537. seeks communion

  538. with God,

  539. intimate

  540. communion.

  541. It is a

  542. love that

  543. seeks the

  544. knowledge of

  545. God and

  546. the word

  547. of God,

  548. to know

  549. him more.

  550. It is a

  551. love that

  552. is sensitive

  553. to God's

  554. honor and

  555. God's

  556. dishonor.

  557. It is a

  558. love that

  559. hates what

  560. God hates

  561. and love

  562. what God

  563. loves.

  564. It is a

  565. love that

  566. grieves

  567. over sin

  568. and rejoices

  569. over righteousness.

  570. It is a

  571. love that

  572. rejects the

  573. world.

  574. It is a

  575. love that

  576. longs for

  577. the coming

  578. of Jesus

  579. Christ,

  580. but mostly

  581. it is a

  582. love that

  583. obeys the

  584. scripture.

  585. If you

  586. love me,

  587. do what?

  588. Keep my

  589. commandments.

  590. Whoever

  591. keeps my

  592. word,

  593. he it is

  594. that loves

  595. me.

  596. That's

  597. who all

  598. this is

  599. working for

  600. for good.

  601. That's

  602. who the

  603. Spirit of

  604. God abides

  605. in and

  606. longs and

  607. groans on

  608. our behalf

  609. for future

  610. glory.

  611. Those who

  612. love God.

  613. And we

  614. see that

  615. all things

  616. in verse

  617. 28 work

  618. together for

  619. good.

  620. All things

  621. work for

  622. good.

  623. Now I

  624. hope if

  625. you've

  626. spent any

  627. time at

  628. all as

  629. a Christian

  630. you're

  631. familiar

  632. with

  633. Romans

  634. 8.

  635. 28.

  636. Again,

  637. I believe

  638. this is a

  639. verse that's

  640. commonly

  641. taken out

  642. of the

  643. proper

  644. context.

  645. Very

  646. expandable.

  647. It certainly

  648. means that

  649. all things

  650. in our

  651. life,

  652. those things

  653. good,

  654. those things

  655. bad,

  656. the suffering

  657. that we

  658. experience,

  659. works together

  660. for good,

  661. that we

  662. might be

  663. able to

  664. share in

  665. the suffering

  666. of others,

  667. that we

  668. might learn

  669. perseverance,

  670. that we

  671. might deeper

  672. rely on the

  673. grace of

  674. God,

  675. certainly

  676. those are

  677. good.

  678. That is good

  679. that these

  680. things are

  681. working toward,

  682. but ultimately

  683. what Paul is

  684. saying to us

  685. is an

  686. ultimate good

  687. for these

  688. things to

  689. work toward,

  690. an ultimate

  691. and final

  692. good,

  693. the glorification

  694. of our

  695. bodies.

  696. So all

  697. things,

  698. including sin

  699. in our

  700. life,

  701. God is

  702. working and

  703. bringing us

  704. toward glory

  705. together.

  706. My son,

  707. my second

  708. son Judah,

  709. is here this

  710. morning.

  711. I don't know

  712. if many of

  713. you have had

  714. a chance

  715. to meet

  716. him yet

  717. as Sam

  718. has been

  719. home with

  720. primarily

  721. Cade being

  722. sick.

  723. Please go

  724. say hello

  725. to him this

  726. morning.

  727. He's already

  728. two months

  729. old and he's

  730. been such a

  731. blessing for

  732. us.

  733. He was born

  734. on February

  735. 17th.

  736. Sam went

  737. into labor

  738. on the night

  739. of the 16th

  740. and labored

  741. rather uncomfortably

  742. all through the

  743. night,

  744. but the

  745. contractions were

  746. only about 10

  747. minutes apart,

  748. so we waited.

  749. We didn't go to

  750. the hospital.

  751. The next day,

  752. we had Cade

  753. sent off to my

  754. parents' house

  755. and figured any

  756. moment we would

  757. rush off to the

  758. hospital to have

  759. Judah.

  760. We waited and

  761. we went for a

  762. walk.

  763. I think we walked

  764. three and a half

  765. to four miles

  766. and got those

  767. contractions speeding

  768. up and we had

  769. them about five

  770. minutes apart on

  771. clockwork and we

  772. thought,

  773. hey, let's go

  774. home and take

  775. off.

  776. And we got

  777. home and Sam

  778. said we can eat

  779. some lunch before

  780. we took off to

  781. the hospital and

  782. in that time her

  783. contractions slowed

  784. back down to about

  785. 15, 20 minutes

  786. apart.

  787. So we waited and

  788. we waited and

  789. finally Sam just

  790. said, I'm tired of

  791. waiting.

  792. Let's just go to the

  793. hospital and see

  794. what's going on.

  795. They're probably

  796. going to laugh at us

  797. and send us home,

  798. but let's just go

  799. see what's going

  800. on with me.

  801. We got there and

  802. they were quite

  803. busy and in fact

  804. the nurse that

  805. checked Sam,

  806. you could actually

  807. tell she was a tad

  808. agitated that Sam

  809. just wanted to be

  810. checked out and

  811. she even assumed

  812. that by Sam's

  813. telling that she

  814. was going to send

  815. us on home and

  816. she checked Sam

  817. and laughed.

  818. Sam was six

  819. centimeters dilated

  820. and gentlemen,

  821. for those of you

  822. who don't know,

  823. that's quite

  824. dilated.

  825. It's time to be at

  826. the hospital at

  827. that point.

  828. And so they very

  829. quickly admitted us

  830. and got everything

  831. going and Sam

  832. decided to have an

  833. epidural this time

  834. and got her on an

  835. epidural and not

  836. long after she

  837. started pushing.

  838. God's grace,

  839. I believe,

  840. to us,

  841. Sam's epidural

  842. didn't take

  843. entirely so she

  844. had a rather

  845. massive pain spot

  846. on her left

  847. side and I

  848. think that it

  849. motivated her to

  850. push hard and

  851. I think she

  852. pushed through

  853. like four

  854. contractions and

  855. Judah's little

  856. head came out

  857. of the womb.

  858. It was purple

  859. and that's not

  860. the normative

  861. thing for a

  862. child's head.

  863. Quickly, as is

  864. always the case,

  865. doctors take a

  866. little syringe

  867. bulb and they

  868. suck the gunk

  869. out of their

  870. heads and try

  871. to get them

  872. breathing as

  873. they've been

  874. breathing water

  875. up to this

  876. point.

  877. They come out

  878. and he still

  879. didn't.

  880. So the doctor

  881. gave him a

  882. little yank

  883. and saw that

  884. the umbilical

  885. cord was

  886. wrapped around

  887. his neck.

  888. I was going

  889. to crack a

  890. joke about

  891. letting him

  892. cut it.

  893. Hey, you can

  894. go ahead and

  895. cut that if

  896. you'd like to.

  897. Before I could

  898. even process

  899. the words out

  900. of my mouth,

  901. he had go-go

  902. gadgeted instruments

  903. and snip-snip

  904. cut and had

  905. that thing

  906. around Judah's

  907. neck.

  908. But still,

  909. Judah didn't

  910. change color.

  911. His head was

  912. still very,

  913. very purple.

  914. So the doctor

  915. said, let's give

  916. him one more

  917. push and

  918. yanked him

  919. right out of

  920. him.

  921. And his little

  922. body was

  923. lifeless,

  924. gray.

  925. His head was

  926. purple, his

  927. body was just

  928. gray.

  929. And the image

  930. of the doctor

  931. looked like a

  932. lateral to the

  933. nurse.

  934. Judah's little

  935. body just limp,

  936. arms hanging,

  937. looked entirely

  938. lifeless.

  939. And quickly

  940. shuffled him

  941. over to the

  942. receiving nurse.

  943. She had already

  944. hit the triage

  945. button, so a

  946. team of nurses

  947. came kind of

  948. busting in the

  949. door.

  950. There's just

  951. this kind of

  952. pandemonium

  953. breaking out.

  954. And we had,

  955. in a number of

  956. ultrasounds

  957. beforehand,

  958. Judah always

  959. looked a little

  960. funny in the

  961. womb.

  962. He looked like

  963. a bridge troll.

  964. And so Sam

  965. and I had joked

  966. around about him

  967. being a rather

  968. ghastly baby.

  969. So I just kept,

  970. I believe at least,

  971. from what I can

  972. remember, I was

  973. just saying the

  974. same.

  975. He's beautiful.

  976. He's so cute.

  977. Like everything's

  978. great.

  979. Definitely good.

  980. And it wasn't.

  981. And you know,

  982. you've ever seen

  983. a movie where

  984. time seems to

  985. kind of stand

  986. still.

  987. Like the characters

  988. are moving at

  989. regular pace,

  990. but everything

  991. around them is

  992. moving in slow

  993. motion or it's

  994. stopped.

  995. That's how it

  996. felt.

  997. All these nurses

  998. and doctors

  999. are running in

  1000. and out and

  1001. all this stuff.

  1002. And all I could

  1003. do was look at

  1004. Judah's little

  1005. lifeless body

  1006. on the table.

  1007. He's obviously

  1008. alive, so the

  1009. story ends very,

  1010. very well.

  1011. They just had to

  1012. get him on some

  1013. oxygen.

  1014. The little bit of

  1015. trauma he experienced

  1016. with the cord around

  1017. his neck coming

  1018. out, he just

  1019. didn't jumpstart

  1020. the way he should

  1021. have.

  1022. And that first

  1023. little cry was

  1024. so precious.

  1025. Even the doctor,

  1026. I heard him go

  1027. when he started

  1028. to cry.

  1029. I'll always

  1030. remember that.

  1031. But what was

  1032. going on in me

  1033. as this is

  1034. happening was

  1035. 828.

  1036. All things for

  1037. good.

  1038. All things for

  1039. good.

  1040. All things for

  1041. good.

  1042. I didn't even

  1043. know what should

  1044. have happened.

  1045. I didn't know

  1046. how to pray.

  1047. If my life is

  1048. ultimately about

  1049. exalting Christ and

  1050. moving in this

  1051. process of perfection,

  1052. I didn't know what

  1053. was best for me.

  1054. maybe losing my

  1055. son was the best

  1056. thing.

  1057. Maybe that would

  1058. have been the best

  1059. thing to move me

  1060. toward ultimate and

  1061. final glory.

  1062. I didn't know what

  1063. to pray, but I

  1064. believe that the

  1065. Spirit of God was

  1066. groaning for me and

  1067. reminded me of 828.

  1068. All things for good.

  1069. All things for good.

  1070. All things for good.

  1071. And I came back.

  1072. But that would have

  1073. been true either way,

  1074. wouldn't it?

  1075. There are people in

  1076. our congregation who

  1077. have lost babies.

  1078. It's for good.

  1079. Ultimate and final

  1080. good.

1081. And that can be so

  1082. hard to swallow in

  1083. the moment.

  1084. But we have the

  1085. Spirit within us who

  1086. groans for us.

  1087. Then we might

  1088. believe that to be

  1089. true.

  1090. And Paul affirms

  1091. that for us.

  1092. He puts that into

  1093. proper perspective

  1094. for us with a

  1095. view of eternity.

  1096. Verse 29.

  1097. For those whom

  1098. he foreknew,

  1099. those that he knew

  1100. would be his,

  1101. those that he knew

  1102. would have the

  1103. Spirit of God

  1104. abiding within them,

  1105. that would cry to

  1106. him, Abba,

  1107. Father.

  1108. Father.

  1109. Those he knew

  1110. that about in the

  1111. beginning of time.

  1112. There's not such

  1113. a thing.

  1114. But in the beginning

  1115. of eternity,

  1116. he predestined,

  1117. he preordained

  1118. that we would be

  1119. conformed to the

  1120. image of his Son.

  1121. That we would,

  1122. in fact,

  1123. reach final and

  1124. full glorification.

  1125. It's going to

  1126. happen.

  1127. Because God

  1128. wrote it.

  1129. In order that we

  1130. might be the first

  1131. born among many

  1132. brothers.

  1133. Verse 30.

  1134. And those whom

  1135. he predestined,

  1136. he also called.

  1137. So those that he

  1138. preordained would

  1139. become like his

  1140. Son, he called.

  1141. And this is an

  1142. effectual call.

  1143. This is not a

  1144. general call here.

  1145. This is an

  1146. effectual call.

  1147. If he, in fact,

  1148. preordained that

  1149. they would become

  1150. like his Son,

  1151. the calling must

  1152. have been answered.

  1153. Because those who

  1154. he called, he

  1155. justified.

  1156. If you don't know

  1157. Christ, if you

  1158. don't have saving

  1159. faith, this, I

  1160. think, would cause

  1161. you to question,

  1162. how do I know?

  1163. If I'm being

  1164. called, if I'm

  1165. feeling a tugging on

  1166. my heart to answer

  1167. the call to the

  1168. gospel, how do I

  1169. know if it's an

  1170. effectual call?

  1171. Your response is

  1172. the evidence of

  1173. that.

  1174. If you respond to

  1175. the gospel in your

  1176. life, you place your

  1177. faith in Jesus

  1178. Christ, it was an

  1179. effectual call.

  1180. The Spirit of God

  1181. was working in you.

  1182. I can make a call.

  1183. I can preach the

  1184. gospel to you.

  1185. But I can't give to

  1186. you an effectual call.

  1187. I can't make you

  1188. believe.

  1189. The Spirit does

  1190. that.

  1191. Remember the first

  1192. ministry of the

  1193. Spirit?

  1194. Regeneration.

  1195. The Spirit gives

1196. to you a new heart.

  1197. Causes you to

  1198. believe.

  1199. So how do you

  1200. know if the call

  1201. is effectual?

  1202. You answer it.

  1203. And he justifies

  1204. those.

  1205. The work of Christ

  1206. is given to you.

  1207. He has taken your

  1208. wrath, given you

  1209. his righteousness,

  1210. and we stand right

  1211. before God.

  1212. And those whom he

  1213. justified, he also

  1214. glorified.

  1215. Now notice that the

  1216. word glorified is

  1217. past tense.

  1218. Isn't that

  1219. interesting?

  1220. It doesn't say,

  1221. and those whom he

  1222. justified, he will

  1223. also glorify.

  1224. Talking about future

  1225. glory.

  1226. Remember, that's the

  1227. context that we're

  1228. in here.

  1229. Paul is telling us

  1230. the hope that we

  1231. can have and what

  1232. will come to pass.

1233. Why does he use a

  1234. past tense version

  1235. of this verb?

  1236. Because it has been

  1237. accomplished.

  1238. We're in the process

  1239. of it being

  1240. accomplished, but it

  1241. has in fact been

  1242. accomplished.

  1243. It's already been

  1244. written.

  1245. God knew our

  1246. eternal ending from

  1247. the eternal

  1248. beginning.

  1249. Because he's the

  1250. one that brings it

  1251. to pass.

  1252. He's fully sovereign.

  1253. He's fully in

  1254. control.

  1255. And as we suffer

  1256. here in this earth,

  1257. we can know,

  1258. Paul's trying to

  1259. tell us here, we

  1260. can know that we

  1261. are secure.

  1262. It does not matter

  1263. what this world

  1264. throws our way.

  1265. And in fact, the

  1266. Bible teaches us

  1267. that we will suffer

  1268. as Christians.

  1269. If you haven't

  1270. already, it's

  1271. coming.

  1272. In all types of

  1273. degrees, you'll

  1274. suffer as a

  1275. Christian.

  1276. You'll long for a

  1277. better place.

  1278. This world is not

  1279. my home.

  1280. I don't know about

  1281. you, but I'm really

  1282. uncomfortable here.

1283. I'm ready to go to

  1284. where I belong.

  1285. Heaven and then the

  1286. new earth when God

  1287. recreates all things.

  1288. is back as it

  1289. should be.

  1290. If I could lose

  1291. my salvation, if

  1292. God granted to me

  1293. any control at all

  1294. over these things,

1295. if I could lose my

  1296. salvation, I would.

  1297. I am so utterly

  1298. corrupted by sin,

  1299. the weakness that we

  1300. talked about earlier.

  1301. I would lose my

  1302. salvation.

  1303. You would too.

  1304. You may not think

  1305. that, but you would.

1306. Praise God that he is

  1307. fully in control.

  1308. from the very

  1309. beginning of it

  1310. to the very

  1311. end.

  1312. And so, those
