  1. We are continuing our sermon series on Christ and culture.

  2. ! And this morning I have the privilege of talking about work, vocation, job, job.

  3. ! Martin Luther once said, a dairymaid can milk cows to the glory of God.

  4. How does that happen? How can we do that?

  5. How can we milk a cow to the glory of God?

  6. How does that apply to us today?

  7. Why do we work?

  8. Why is it important to work?

  9. All questions I hope to answer this morning in our Christ and Culture series this morning, topic of work.

  10. Let's pray together.

  11. Holy, holy, holy are you, O God.

  12. Worthy of all praise this morning, I pray that that would occur.

  13. God, as I stand up here, as I speak, I speak your words, I would make much of you and little of me.

  14. God, that we would all be touched by you this morning.

  15. God, that we would see our calling in our life as nothing elementary or simple or not important.

  16. That we would see it as a calling from you, placed us where we are, to make much of you, to bring glory to you, to worship you alone.

  17. Help us, God, this morning.

  18. Help us to hear.

  19. Help me to speak.

  20. Help us to act as if we did hear a word from you this morning.

  21. As I pray that will occur.

  22. I love you.

  23. We love you because you first loved us.

  24. For your son, Jesus.

  25. In his name I pray.

  26. Amen.

  27. Ephesians 4, verse 28 is our text this morning.

    Ephesians 4:28

  28. It's the main text, but we're going to springboard off of it.

  29. We're going to go different directions in the Bible.

  30. So, mark it.

  31. Open up to 428 and we'll just kind of dig through.

  32. Chapter 4, verse 28 reads,

  33. Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

  34. Now, this verse sets up very similar to the book or the letter to the Ephesians.

  35. In that chapters 1 through 3 define for us who we are in Christ and because of Christ.

  36. It tells us, because of the work of Christ on the cross, because of the work of Christ in our hearts, who we are.

  37. So, we are adopted sons.

  38. We who were dead are now alive.

  39. We are one in Christ.

  40. Chapters 1 through 3.

  41. Chapters 4 through 6 then tell us how we should live in light of who we are in Christ.

  42. So, a higher calling.

  43. A higher way to live.

  44. Well, if we read verse 28, we have the first part of who we are, a thief.

  45. Second part, how we should live then.

  46. A higher calling once again.

  47. My sermon this morning is two parts as well to kind of keep the theme going.

  48. First part, I'm going to talk about stealing, how it applies to us.

  49. Second part, I'm going to talk about work and how that applies to us.

  50. So, the verse starts out by saying, let the thief no longer steal.

  51. Some quick observations, just for all of us to be on the same page here with this verse.

  52. Paul is speaking to Christians.

  53. If you flip back to the beginning of chapter 4, it says,

  54. I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord,

  55. Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.

  56. He's speaking to Christians.

  57. He's writing to the church in Ephesus.

  58. So, we can't say that this thief is not a believer.

  59. He's speaking to believers.

  60. Second observation, Paul is speaking to Christians who have not yet given up the practice of stealing.

  61. He says, let the thief no longer.

  62. If it was somebody or people who had once stolen and not stolen anymore,

  63. it would say something in past tense, that those who stole.

  64. Third observation really quick.

  65. Thieves are not outside the grace of God.

  66. These are Christians, once again, the church at Ephesus.

  67. In 1 Corinthians chapter 6, verse 9 through 11, we have a list.

    1 Corinthians 6:9–11

  68. It says, or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?

  69. Do not be deceived.

  70. Neither the sexual immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

  71. That's where a lot of us want to grab that stone that Nathan talked about two weeks ago and throw it and just stop there.

  72. But, verse 11, and such were some of you, but you were washed, you were sacrificed, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

  73. Even thieves are not outside the grace of God.

  74. Think about the thief on the cross, Luke 23.

  75. He turns to Jesus and says, remember me.

  76. Jesus says, today you will be with me in paradise.

  77. Fourth observation, real quick.

  78. Salvation changes the heart, but does not automatically change a man's conduct or thinking.

  79. Okay?

  80. We have redemption stories all around us where this has happened.

  81. Where guys have had addictions and the moment they've received Christ, the moment they become a Christian, that addiction is over with.

  82. Drugs, alcohol, those types of things.

  83. And those of redemption stories are to be rejoiced and to be excited about.

  84. But that's not the norm.

  85. That's not an automatic thing.

  86. Coming to faith in Jesus does not end our struggle with sin.

  87. Romans 6, Romans 7 tells us that it is a process.

  88. We need to continually fight that sin.

  89. This process is God perfecting us.

  90. It's God working in us.

  91. In a book called When Sinners Say I Do, which is what we've been studying through with a couple couples for marital counseling.

  92. He gives an illustration of buttoning a shirt.

  93. Now if you start at the top of your shirt and you get one button wrong, what happens?

  94. All the rest of them are all wrong and your shirt's all wonky.

  95. You've got to get the first one right and then you work your way down.

  96. Well, it's the same here.

  97. God is perfecting us.

  98. We've got the first button.

  99. And it's a process.

  100. He is continually buttoning and getting that shirt right on us.

  101. God is working in us.

  102. Perfecting us.

  103. It is a process where we fight against sin.

  104. Turn to Romans real quick.

  105. We'll end with these quick observations here.

  106. Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  107. Just so you don't just have to take my word for it.

  108. Romans chapter 6 verse 12.

    Romans 6:12

  109. It says,

  110. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body to make you obey its passions.

  111. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness.

  112. But present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life.

  113. And your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

  114. For sin will have no dominion over you since you are not under law but under grace.

  115. Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  116. Romans chapter 12 verse 1 and 2.

    Romans 12:1

  117. Satan doesn't automatically end our struggle with it.

  118. So, the verse in Ephesians 4 verse 28 says,

    Ephesians 4:28

  119. Let the thief no longer steal.

  120. It is no shock to you when I say that stealing is wrong.

  121. We all agree.

  122. Shake your heads.

  123. Yes.

  124. Stealing is wrong.

  125. here's some things that stealing does.

  126. Stealing seeks to turn over

  127. what Adam was given to do.

  128. And thus, us.

  129. Adam was given to work.

  130. He was commanded to work the garden.

  131. It was a delight to work.

  132. It was a joy.

  133. But because of the fall,

  134. work became toil,

  135. became hard,

  136. became painful.

  137. And as we see in the curse

  138. in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  139. things that wore a delight

  140. became, because of the fall, painful.

  141. Women, childbearing, became painful.

  142. Men, work, became toil.

  143. Stealing seeks to turn over

  144. what Adam and we were created to do.

  145. So are there areas in your life

  146. where you avoid work?

  147. Where you avoid what you were given to do?

  148. Where you avoid the curse?

  149. Where there's laziness and slothfulness

  150. in your life?

  151. Are there times where you avoid work

  152. at your job by cheating on your time

  153. or stealing from your employees?

  154. Employers.

  155. I have a temptation every week.

  156. Every week to do just that.

  157. I have an hourly rate.

  158. I work for a friend of mine

  159. and he trusts me and believes me.

  160. And he asks me,

  161. what time do I get off at the end of the day?

  162. And I can very easily say,

  163. I got off at 5 when I left at 4.

  164. I can very easily say,

  165. I got off at 5.30.

  166. The temptation is there for all of us.

  167. The question is,

  168. are you stealing from your employer?

  169. Are you stealing and trying to turn over

  170. what we were created and given to do?

  171. That is, work.

  172. Stealing is also self-worship.

  173. Stealing is putting your needs

  174. above everyone else's.

  175. It is feasting on the labor of others.

  176. It is forcing others to sacrifice,

  177. to serve your own self-interest.

  178. Think about it.

  179. Somebody does the work,

  180. and what do you do?

  181. You steal.

  182. You take.

  183. I'm not calling anybody out.

  184. You as a general term, I promise.

  185. Me as well.

  186. When we worship ourselves,

  187. we are not worshiping Jesus.

  188. Jesus, the one who died,

  189. so that we could have victory

  190. over this very sin

  191. of self-worship and of theft.

  192. So is there an area in your life

  193. where you take advantage of others

  194. by stealing or by avoiding

  195. a particular job even?

  196. Do you worship yourself

  197. instead of the Creator?

  198. Stealing is also not trusting God.

  199. God who promises to provide

  200. for His children.

  201. Remember Ephesians 4, our text.

  202. He is talking to true Christians.

  203. Not trusting God.

  204. You guys remember the Sermon on the Mount

  205. in Matthew 6?

  206. The subtitle will say something like

  207. do not worry, do not be anxious.

  208. Jesus says do not be anxious about tomorrow.

  209. Look at the birds of the air.

  210. Look at the fields.

  211. The fields are dressed better than Solomon ever was.

  212. The flowers are dressed.

  213. The birds are provided for.

  214. Much more does the Father provide for you.

  215. See, God is the provider for His children

  216. and stealing does not trust God.

  217. A person steals because they no longer believe

  218. God is God.

  219. That He is who He says He is.

  220. Stealing puts trust in the thief

  221. and not in the giver.

  222. Not in the Creator.

  223. Think about the thief on the cross again.

  224. At the end of His life.

  225. Moments, seconds even before death.

  226. Where was His trust put?

  227. Where did He trust?

  228. His entire life as a thief was

  229. He trusted in His ability.

  230. He trusted in what He could do

  231. to avoid work.

  232. He was hopeless in this moment at death.

  233. He could not trust in Himself.

  234. His bag of tricks was empty.

  235. The skills that He learned

  236. to avoid work

  237. could not help Him.

  238. And what did He do?

  239. He turned to the Savior.

  240. Are there areas in your life

  241. where you are not trusting God to provide?

  242. Are there areas in your life

  243. where you say,

  244. God, I've got this.

  245. I will steal.

  246. I will take care of this.

  247. Maybe your anxiousness

  248. has overcome you

  249. and forced you to take

  250. what isn't yours.

  251. Do you believe the promises of the Bible?

  252. Do you believe the promises of God?

  253. If so, then why do you steal?

  254. And let's be honest,

  255. I'm not even talking about physical things

  256. for the most part.

  257. We steal the glory of God.

  258. We steal the worship that is due Him.

  259. And we try to worship ourselves.

  260. That's bigger.

  261. That's worse than stealing a pack of gum.

  262. Or a stapler.

  263. Or name it.

  264. At work.

  265. Time.

  266. There are times

  267. where we steal His worship

  268. and His glory.

  269. We try to bring it to us.

  270. Bring it to our attention.

  271. You believe the promises of God.

  272. You believe.

  273. Then why don't you trust?

  274. Why don't you trust?

  275. See, what you don't trust,

  276. you don't worship.

  277. So if you don't trust God,

  278. you will not worship God.

  279. God is our provider.

  280. And stealing is not trusting God.

  281. Last thing about stealing.

  282. Stealing is a rebellion

  283. against the sovereignty of God.

  284. Stealing is a rebellion

  285. against the sovereignty of God.

  286. God provides.

  287. God knows the needs of His children.

  288. And He distributes material things accordingly.

  289. To God is good,

  290. no matter what.

  291. God is good whether you

  292. drive a nice car

  293. or a dumpy car.

  294. God is good.

  295. No matter if you live

  296. on the streets or not,

  297. He is still good.

  298. Stealing robs you

  299. of accepting that truth.

  300. Stealing rebels

  301. against God

  302. and His control.

  303. To eat trust,

  304. faith,

  305. joy,

  306. love,

  307. all of them are robbed

  308. from the life of a thief.

  309. Think about it.

  310. You trust in the Lord.

  311. No.

  312. You trust in yourself.

  313. You have faith in God

  314. and His promises.

  315. No.

  316. You have faith in your abilities

  317. and your skills.

  318. You have joy in the Lord.

  319. No.

  320. You have pain,

  321. sorrow,

  322. anxiousness

  323. from yourself

  324. and your circumstances.

  325. You have love for God.

  326. No.

  327. You have love for self.

  328. God is sovereign.

  329. He is good.

  330. We can trust Him completely.

  331. We don't need to rebel

  332. against this truth.

  333. So,

  334. in our text,

  335. in Ephesians 4,

    Ephesians 4:28

  336. verse 28,

  337. it says,

  338. let the thief

  339. no longer steal.

  340. Christians

  341. in the church at Ephesus.

  342. Christians

  343. at the church

  344. at Christ's family church.

  345. Christians

  346. here

  347. at 60 South.

  348. Christians

  349. in Dahlonega.

  350. let the thief

  351. no longer steal.

  352. So,

  353. that's the first part

  354. of our verse.

  355. Let us now

  356. dig in

  357. to our topic.

  358. Work.

  359. The second part

  360. of the verse

  361. applies,

  362. again,

  363. just like the first,

  364. to all of us.

  365. Speaks to all of us.

  366. Whether we are a thief

  367. or not,

  368. and I would argue

  369. that all of us

  370. at one time

  371. or another

  372. are thieves,

  373. have been thieves.

  374. So,

  375. here we go.

  376. Gives us a definition

  377. of a Christian

  378. work ethic,

  379. so to speak.

  380. Verse 28,

  381. let the thief

  382. no longer steal,

  383. but rather

  384. let him labor

  385. doing honest work

  386. with his own hands

  387. so that he may have

  388. something to share

  389. with anyone

  390. in need.

  391. Now,

  392. what I have

  393. is I have five

  394. reasons why

  395. we work.

  396. And,

  397. maybe or maybe not,

  398. it applies,

  399. it fits real well

  400. into our Christ-end culture,

  401. but here's why I put

  402. five reasons

  403. why we work.

  404. Because I believe

  405. that the how

  406. we work,

  407. how we

  408. spend our time

  409. working,

  410. how we work

  411. our tails off,

  412. how we

  413. act at work,

  414. will come out of

  415. the why

  416. we work.

  417. Okay?

  418. So,

  419. first one.

  420. why do we work?

  421. Five reasons

  422. we work.

  423. We've already

  424. talked about it.

  425. Reason one,

  426. we work because

  427. we were created

  428. to work.

  429. It was put in

  430. from the Creator

  431. in Genesis chapter 2

    Genesis 2:15

  432. verse 15,

  433. Adam was given

  434. to work.

  435. And it was a pleasure

  436. to do so.

  437. He delighted

  438. in it.

  439. See,

  440. when we work,

  441. when we work,

  442. as the text says

  443. in Ephesians 4,

  444. when we labor

  445. doing honest work,

  446. we bring glory to God.

  447. We'll touch on that

  448. in just a little bit.

  449. See,

  450. it was the curse.

  451. It was the curse

  452. that made work

  453. a burden,

  454. painful.

  455. ESV translates it

  456. toil.

  457. Toil.

  458. Toil.

  459. Now,

  460. I had a curse-filled

  461. day of work

  462. this week.

  463. 510 feet of conduit

  464. in trenches

  465. and ditches,

  466. running wire

  467. under the scorching sun.

  468. It was toil.

  469. It was hard.

  470. No matter

  471. how hard it was,

  472. no matter

  473. how hard

  474. and difficult,

  475. I was created

  476. to do

  477. that work.

  478. I was given

  479. that moment

  480. to work

  481. to the glory

  482. of God.

  483. we work

  484. because we were

  485. created

  486. to work.

  487. Secondly,

  488. we work

  489. to provide

  490. for our families.

  491. In 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 5 chapter mention

  492. chapter 5,

  493. and I'm going to

  494. highlight verse 8,

  495. but 3 through 8

  496. gives us

  497. a little bit of

  498. guidance here.

  499. Verse 8,

  500. Paul says to Timothy,

  501. if anyone

  502. does not provide

  503. for his relatives

  504. and especially

  505. for members

  506. of his household,

  507. he has denied

  508. his faith

  509. and is worse

  510. than an unbeliever.

  511. Those are

  512. strong words.

  513. If anyone

  514. does not provide

  515. for his relatives

  516. and especially

  517. for members

  518. of his household,

  519. he is denied

  520. the faith

  521. and is worse

  522. than an unbeliever.

  523. If you are

  524. a Christian,

  525. if you are

  526. a child of God

  527. and you do not

  528. provide for your

  529. family,

  530. repent this morning.

  531. God has put you

  532. in the place

  533. where you are

  534. to provide

  535. for your family.

  536. Not to provide

  537. for the pleasures

  538. that you want

  539. to participate in,

  540. not to buy

  541. all the toys

  542. and fun things

  543. that are out there

  544. for you to play with.

  545. I'm going to speak

  546. to the young guys

  547. here for a minute.

  548. Now,

  549. as Nathan did

  550. a couple weeks ago,

  551. opinion alert.

  552. Okay,

  553. here's my opinion,

  554. but I think

  555. it's based

  556. in truth.

  557. Okay?

  558. Young guys,

  559. you may be

  560. paying bills.

  561. You may be

  562. paying a credit card bill,

  563. paying a cell phone bill.

  564. You may be

  565. paying a car payment

  566. or insurance.

  567. But you have

  568. not arrived.

  569. You have not

  570. arrived.

  571. There is another

  572. level to manhood.

  573. There is another

  574. level to

  575. being a man

  576. and that is

  577. providing

  578. for mouths.

  579. That is for

  580. providing

  581. for a family.

  582. There are mouths

  583. to feed.

  584. It's like the

  585. picture of

  586. the mother bird

  587. coming in.

  588. It's got food

  589. hanging out of her beak

  590. and the kids

  591. are all open.

  592. The baby birds,

  593. not kids.

  594. Baby birds are all

  595. open squawking

  596. and the mom

  597. drops the worms

  598. and stuff in the mouth.

  599. Well,

  600. that's you guys.

  601. Men,

  602. that's you.

  603. You are to provide

  604. for your families.

  605. Are you providing

  606. for your family?

  607. Young guys,

  608. do you want

  609. to provide

  610. for your family?

  611. You have been

  612. created

  613. to do it.

  614. You have been

  615. commanded

  616. to do it.

  617. Now,

  618. commercial break,

  619. intermission.

  620. Of course,

  621. there are

  622. disabled

  623. mentally and

  624. physically

  625. people

  626. who cannot

  627. provide.

  628. They cannot

  629. work.

  630. But what is

  631. the heart

  632. of that person?

  633. What is the

  634. heart of that

  635. disabled person?

  636. Do they

  637. desire to

  638. provide?

  639. Do they

  640. try to

  641. provide

  642. spiritually?

  643. Do they

  644. try to

  645. provide for

  646. their family?

  647. Do they

  648. want to?

  649. Is there

  650. a burden

  651. in them

  652. to provide?

  653. Guys,

  654. this is not

  655. a loophole.

  656. It's because

  657. you have a

  658. desire to.

  659. It doesn't

  660. mean you

  661. do.

  662. It's because

  663. I say I'm

  664. a stick.

  665. It doesn't

  666. make me

  667. a stick.

  668. We work

  669. to provide

  670. for our

  671. families.

  672. If anyone

  673. does not

  674. provide for

  675. his relatives

  676. and especially

  677. for members

  678. of his

  679. household,

  680. he has

  681. denied the

  682. faith and

  683. is worse

  684. than an

  685. unbeliever.

  686. Men,

  687. provide for

  688. your families.

  689. Future men,

  690. future

  691. patriarchs of

  692. your family,

  693. provide for

  694. your families.

  695. Thirdly,

  696. so first,

  697. we work,

  698. we were

  699. created to

  700. work.

  701. Second,

  702. we work

  703. to provide

  704. for our

  705. families.

  706. Third,

  707. we work

  708. to be

  709. generous

  710. from our

  711. text in

  712. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:28

  713. chapter 4

  714. verse 28.

  715. Let the

  716. thief no

  717. longer

  718. steal,

  719. but rather

  720. let him

  721. labor,

  722. doing honest

  723. work with

  724. his own

  725. hands,

  726. so that he

  727. may have

  728. something to

  729. share with

  730. anyone in

  731. need.

  732. We work

  733. to be

  734. generous.

  735. Yes,

  736. point two

  737. was we

  738. work to

  739. provide for

  740. our families,

  741. but we also

  742. work to be

  743. generous.

  744. We work

  745. so that we

  746. can give

  747. more,

  748. so that we

  749. have something

  750. to share

  751. with anyone

  752. in need.

  753. Now that's a

  754. paradigm shift.

  755. That's a big

  756. shift in

  757. thinking compared

  758. to what the

  759. world teaches.

  760. Agree?

  761. That's a huge

  762. change in

  763. thought.

  764. Now we have a

  765. paradox here in

  766. this verse.

  767. The beginning of

  768. the verse says,

  769. let the thief

  770. no longer

  771. steal.

  772. Selfish,

  773. self-worship,

  774. self-gratification,

  775. self-provision,

  776. and then at

  777. the end it

  778. says,

  779. work to

  780. share with

  781. anyone in

  782. need.

  783. Selfless,

  784. others-focused,

  785. kingdom-minded,

  786. gospel-centered,

  787. God-exalting.

  788. So, we no

  789. longer think of

  790. ourselves, we

  791. think of others

  792. and we provide

  793. for them.

  794. That's the

  795. idea here.

  796. Isn't that

  797. what the

  798. gospel of

  799. Jesus Christ

  800. does?

  801. Isn't that

  802. what Jesus

  803. did himself?

  804. He thought

  805. of others

  806. and went

  807. ahead and

  808. died for

  809. others to

  810. have life.

  811. College

  812. students,

  813. you are on

  814. a collision

  815. course to

  816. making good

  817. money.

  818. You're headed

  819. in that

  820. direction.

  821. Some of you

  822. maybe,

  823. some of you

  824. might not,

  825. but most of

  826. you have an

  827. opportunity to

  828. make good

  829. money.

  830. money.

  831. What are

  832. you going to

  833. work for?

  834. What is

  835. going to be

  836. your end

  837. goal?

  838. Is it to

  839. give away?

  840. Is it to

  841. be generous?

  842. So, let's

  843. say you make

  844. $50,000,

  845. $60,000,

  846. $70,000,

  847. $80,000 a

  848. year.

  849. What can

  850. you live off

  851. of?

  852. What can

  853. you live off

  854. of?

  855. Give the

  856. rest.

  857. Give the

  858. rest away.

  859. Be generous,

  860. as Ephesians

  861. 4.28 tells

  862. us.

  863. Maybe,

  864. just maybe,

  865. you will be

  866. put in that

  867. position to

  868. provide for

  869. a kingdom

  870. movement that

  871. we have never

  872. seen before.

  873. Just maybe

  874. your money

  875. that you

  876. give might

  877. be the

  878. fuel,

  879. might be

  880. what provides

  881. for a

  882. movement.

  883. six-figure

  884. income even.

  885. That's not

  886. for your

  887. kingdom.

  888. That's not.

  889. That's for

  890. God's kingdom.

  891. Live modestly.

  892. Give much.

  893. Don't fall

  894. for what

  895. others in the

  896. world tells

  897. you.

  898. You don't

  899. need the

  900. $50,000

  901. car or

  902. the $200

  903. jeans or

  904. the $300,000

  905. house.

  906. your kingdom

  907. will fall.

  908. That's what

  909. you try to

  910. build.

  911. Babylon,

  912. Roman Empire,

  913. they built

  914. their kingdoms

  915. and what

  916. happened?

  917. They fell.

  918. Now,

  919. of course,

  920. you're not

  921. going to be

  922. building a

  923. Roman Empire,

  924. but you are

  925. going to be

  926. building a

  927. castle.

  928. If you're

  929. trying to build

  930. your kingdom,

  931. you're trying

  932. to build

  933. your castle.

  934. You're trying

  935. to build

  936. your retirement,

  937. you're trying

  938. to build this,

  939. you're trying

  940. to build that.

  941. You get all

  942. your stuff

  943. around you.

  944. That stuff

  945. is worthless.

  946. Worth nothing

  947. in the big

  948. picture.

  949. And here

  950. in Ephesians

  951. 4, 28,

  952. let the thief

  953. no longer

  954. steal, but

  955. rather let

  956. him labor,

  957. doing honest

  958. work with

  959. his own

  960. hands.

  961. We would

  962. agree with

  963. that, yes.

  964. Let us all

  965. do honest

  966. work with

  967. our own

  968. hands, dig

  969. ditches,

  970. teach students,

  971. be lawyers,

  972. doctors, heal

  973. people.

  974. Yes.

  975. So that he

  976. may have

  977. something to

  978. share with

  979. anyone in

  980. need.

  981. That should

  982. be our

  983. drive.

  984. That should

  985. be our

  986. direction we're

  987. headed.

  988. That's why we

  989. get a six

  990. figure income,

  991. so that we

  992. can then be

  993. generous to

  994. people in

  995. need.

  996. We can

  997. provide for

  998. them.

  999. That's what we

  1000. can provide

  1001. for ourselves.

  1002. We work to

  1003. be generous.

  1004. Do you

  1005. work to be

  1006. generous?

  1007. College students,

  1008. will you

  1009. work to

  1010. be generous?

  1011. Fourthly,

  1012. we work to

  1013. build the

  1014. kingdom.

  1015. We work to

  1016. build the

  1017. kingdom.

  1018. Turn to

  1019. 1 Peter 2.

  1020. If you've

  1021. got a

  1022. bookmark or

  1023. keep your

  1024. finger there

  1025. because we

  1026. will come

  1027. back to

  1028. this text

  1029. in a

  1030. moment.

  1031. In 1

  1032. Peter 2,

  1033. we have a

  1034. couple verses

  1035. and I want

  1036. to highlight

  1037. actually just

  1038. one right

  1039. now.

  1040. 1 Peter 2,

    1 Peter 2:12

  1041. verse 12.

  1042. The text

  1043. says,

  1044. keep your

  1045. conduct among

  1046. the Gentiles

  1047. honorable,

  1048. so that when

  1049. they speak

  1050. against you

  1051. as evildoers,

  1052. they may see

  1053. your good deeds

  1054. and glorify

  1055. God on the

  1056. day of

  1057. hesitation.

  1058. salvation.

  1059. We work

  1060. to build

  1061. the kingdom.

  1062. Keep your

  1063. conduct among

  1064. the Gentiles

  1065. honorable.

  1066. Now here,

  1067. Gentiles is a

  1068. people group,

  1069. yes,

  1070. but he's also

  1071. speaking,

  1072. the people group

  1073. represents sinners,

  1074. lost people,

  1075. non-believers.

  1076. Non-believers.

  1077. believers.

  1078. So they may

  1079. see your

  1080. good deeds,

  1081. the way

  1082. you work,

  1083. how you

  1084. work,

  1085. why you

  1086. work.

  1087. And the

  1088. end result

  1089. here from

  1090. this text,

  1091. so they may

  1092. glorify God

  1093. on the day

  1094. of visitation,

  1095. so that they

  1096. may become

  1097. Christians.

  1098. We work

  1099. to be

  1100. generous

  1101. in and out

  1102. of our

  1103. circle of

  1104. influence,

  1105. but now

  1106. we work

  1107. to preach

  1108. the gospel

  1109. in our

  1110. circle

  1111. of influence

  1112. and build

  1113. the kingdom.

  1114. Colossians 1

    Colossians 1:28–29

  1115. verse 28-29

  1116. says,

  1117. Him we

  1118. proclaim,

  1119. Him being

  1120. Christ,

  1121. warning everyone

  1122. and teaching

  1123. everyone with

  1124. all wisdom

  1125. that we may

  1126. present everyone

  1127. mature in

  1128. Christ.

  1129. for this

  1130. I toil,

  1131. there's that

  1132. word again,

  1133. painful,

  1134. struggling,

  1135. struggling with

  1136. all His

  1137. energy that

  1138. He powerfully

  1139. works within

  1140. me.

  1141. We have an

  1142. impact on

  1143. people around

  1144. us,

  1145. people who we

  1146. work with,

  1147. people who we

  1148. sit next to

  1149. and cubicle

  1150. next to us

  1151. or dig

  1152. ditches with

  1153. or heal

  1154. people with.

  1155. we have an

  1156. impact on

  1157. people's lives.

  1158. The people

  1159. in your life

  1160. have been

  1161. placed there.

  1162. You have

  1163. been placed

  1164. there for a

  1165. reason.

  1166. Been placed

  1167. there by a

  1168. sovereign God.

  1169. The question

  1170. is,

  1171. will you make

  1172. much of

  1173. yourself,

  1174. will you

  1175. steal,

  1176. self-worship,

  1177. or will

  1178. you make

  1179. much of

  1180. Jesus?

  1181. You're

  1182. going to

  1183. do one

  1184. of two

  1185. things.

  1186. You will

  1187. either make

  1188. much of

  1189. yourself by

  1190. complaining,

  1191. by grumbling,

  1192. by having

  1193. conversations in

  1194. secret about

  1195. co-workers and

  1196. the employer and

  1197. the company and

  1198. how horrible it

  1199. is, by

  1200. stealing, by

  1201. hating the

  1202. work and

  1203. even by being

  1204. apathetic and

  1205. not caring.

  1206. Or,

  1207. you will

  1208. make much

  1209. of Jesus

  1210. by talking

  1211. about Him,

  1212. by preaching

  1213. the gospel,

  1214. by having

  1215. hard conversations,

  1216. by working

  1217. to your

  1218. fullest

  1219. potential.

  1220. Now,

  1221. there's a

  1222. sports

  1223. cliche.

  1224. It applies

  1225. to a

  1226. temporal

  1227. thing,

  1228. sports,

  1229. temporal

  1230. activities,

  1231. here today,

  1232. maybe gone

  1233. tomorrow.

  1234. But we

  1235. can apply

  1236. it to an

  1237. eternal

  1238. application.

  1239. application

  1240. here.

  1241. Sports

  1242. of the

  1243. Slave is

  1244. leaving it

  1245. all on

  1246. the field,

  1247. giving our

  1248. everything out

  1249. there on

  1250. the field so

  1251. we have

  1252. nothing left.

  1253. That team

  1254. really left

  1255. it all on

  1256. the field.

  1257. They really

  1258. worked hard.

  1259. They played

  1260. hard.

  1261. They played

  1262. together.

  1263. They really

  1264. showed us

  1265. something.

  1266. We should

  1267. leave it all

  1268. on the field

  1269. when we

  1270. are at work.

  1271. We should

  1272. work to our

  1273. fullest potential.

  1274. Why?

  1275. Because we

  1276. can make

  1277. much of

  1278. Jesus.

  1279. We can

  1280. make much

  1281. of Him

  1282. by working

  1283. and leaving

  1284. it all

  1285. out on

  1286. the field.

  1287. As

  1288. Colossians

  1289. says,

  1290. do you

  1291. toil?

  1292. Do you

  1293. grow tired?

  1294. Do you

  1295. grow weary

  1296. to teach

  1297. and warn

  1298. the people

  1299. at your

  1300. workplace

  1301. with your

  1302. words and

  1303. with your

  1304. actions?

  1305. sins?

  1306. Let us

  1307. all repent

  1308. of our

  1309. selfishness

  1310. and fear.

  1311. Let us

  1312. trust God.

  1313. Let us

  1314. all work

  1315. as if

  1316. eternity

  1317. hangs in

  1318. the balance.

  1319. Let us

  1320. all work

  1321. and be

  1322. the employees

  1323. of the

  1324. month.

  1325. We should

  1326. be the

  1327. best employees.

  1328. We should

  1329. be the

  1330. guys working

  1331. our tails

  1332. off.

  1333. We should

  1334. be the

  1335. guys that

  1336. are hated

  1337. honestly.

  1338. Oh,

  1339. that Daniel,

  1340. he works

  1341. his tail off.

  1342. He makes

  1343. us all

  1344. look bad.

  1345. Amen.

  1346. Why do

  1347. you work

  1348. that way,

  1349. Daniel?

  1350. Well,

  1351. because God

  1352. tells me to,

  1353. because I

  1354. love Jesus,

  1355. I don't

  1356. make much

  1357. of Jesus.

  1358. Let me

  1359. tell you

  1360. about Jesus.

  1361. There's

  1362. opportunities

  1363. through the

  1364. way you

  1365. work to

  1366. make much

  1367. of Jesus,

  1368. to make

  1369. much of

  1370. Him,

  1371. or to

  1372. try to

  1373. make much

  1374. of

  1375. yourself.

  1376. Fifthly,

  1377. and we've

  1378. touched on

  1379. it,

  1380. pieces here

  1381. and there,

  1382. we work

  1383. to glorify

  1384. the King.

  1385. We work

  1386. to glorify

  1387. Jesus.

  1388. Okay?

  1389. Turn to

  1390. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  1391. chapter 10.

  1392. Put a mark

  1393. in 1 Peter

  1394. because we'll

  1395. be back.

  1396. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  1397. chapter 10.

  1398. If you're

  1399. familiar with

  1400. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  1401. chapter 10,

  1402. then you know

  1403. where we're

  1404. headed.

  1405. at the end

  1406. of the

  1407. chapter,

  1408. we work

  1409. to glorify

  1410. the King.

  1411. Not only

  1412. do we work

  1413. to build

  1414. the Kingdom,

  1415. capital K,

  1416. we work

  1417. to glorify

  1418. the King,

  1419. capital K.

  1420. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10:31

  1421. chapter 10,

  1422. verse 31.

  1423. So whether

  1424. you eat

  1425. or drink

  1426. or whatever

  1427. you do,

  1428. do all

  1429. to the glory

  1430. of God.

  1431. Give no offense

  1432. to Jews

  1433. or to Greeks

  1434. or to the

  1435. church of God.

  1436. Just as I try

  1437. to please

  1438. everyone in

  1439. everything I do,

  1440. not seeking

  1441. my own

  1442. advantage,

  1443. we work

  1444. to be generous,

  1445. we work

  1446. to be selfless,

  1447. but that of

  1448. many that

  1449. they may

  1450. be saved.

  1451. Our ultimate

  1452. purpose to

  1453. work,

  1454. our ultimate

  1455. trump card,

  1456. is the work

  1457. for the glory

  1458. of God

  1459. and to

  1460. the glory

  1461. of God.

  1462. So whatever

  1463. you do,

  1464. do all

  1465. the glory

  1466. of God.

  1467. This means

  1468. that whoever

  1469. you are

  1470. and whatever

  1471. you do,

  1472. no matter

  1473. what,

  1474. okay,

  1475. not no matter

  1476. what,

  1477. scratch that,

  1478. there's some

  1479. things we can't

  1480. do to the glory

  1481. of God

  1482. and you guys

  1483. can figure

  1484. those out.

  1485. Due to

  1486. the glory

  1487. of God.

  1488. William Tyndale,

  1489. who translated

  1490. the Bible

  1491. into English,

  1492. he says this,

  1493. he says,

  1494. if we look

  1495. externally,

  1496. look externally,

  1497. so from

  1498. our vantage

  1499. point,

  1500. there is a

  1501. difference

  1502. between

  1503. washing of

  1504. dishes

  1505. and preaching

  1506. of the

  1507. Word of

  1508. God.

  1509. But,

  1510. as touching

  1511. to please

  1512. God,

  1513. none at

  1514. all.

  1515. God

  1516. looketh not

  1517. principally

  1518. at the

  1519. external part

  1520. of the

  1521. work,

  1522. but much

  1523. more to

  1524. the heart

  1525. of Him

  1526. that does

  1527. it.

  1528. In other

  1529. words,

  1530. God looks

  1531. at the

  1532. heart of

  1533. a man

  1534. and not

  1535. the task

  1536. that the

  1537. man is

  1538. doing

  1539. or woman.

  1540. Think about

  1541. it,

  1542. He's right.

  1543. The Sermon on the

  1544. Mount,

  1545. Jesus repeatedly

  1546. raised the bar.

  1547. Why?

  1548. Because it was

  1549. about the

  1550. heart.

  1551. It was not

  1552. about what

  1553. the people

  1554. were doing.

  1555. He called

  1556. the religious

  1557. leaders

  1558. whitewashed

  1559. tombs.

  1560. Tombs have

  1561. dead carcasses,

  1562. dead bodies

  1563. in them,

  1564. dead corpses,

  1565. smelly,

  1566. stinky,

  1567. disgusting,

  1568. and the

  1569. outside,

  1570. it's all

  1571. pretty and

  1572. prim and

  1573. proper and

  1574. painted.

  1575. What you

  1576. do on the

  1577. outside does

  1578. not matter.

  1579. It's what's

  1580. on the inside

  1581. is what He's

  1582. saying.

  1583. It means

  1584. that whether

  1585. you gather

  1586. garbage,

  1587. you dig

  1588. ditches,

  1589. or you

  1590. preach to

  1591. thousands,

  1592. all of it

  1593. can be done

  1594. for the

  1595. glory of

  1596. God.

  1597. It also

  1598. means that

  1599. you're calling

  1600. to teach.

  1601. You're calling

  1602. to sit in a

  1603. cubicle all

  1604. day.

  1605. You're calling

  1606. to take care

  1607. of animals.

  1608. You're calling

  1609. to build

  1610. houses.

  1611. It's no

  1612. less important

  1613. than the

  1614. preacher who's

  1615. preaching on

  1616. Sunday morning

  1617. or at a

  1618. major conference

  1619. in a big

  1620. city.

  1621. Which also

  1622. means that

  1623. preachers in

  1624. this room,

  1625. you're not

  1626. any more

  1627. important,

  1628. I'm not

  1629. any more

  1630. important than

  1631. any of

  1632. you.

  1633. that is

  1634. empowering.

  1635. That is

  1636. freeing.

  1637. That is

  1638. good news

  1639. for all

  1640. of us.

  1641. All of us

  1642. in this

  1643. room who

  1644. are called

  1645. into the

  1646. world as

  1647. county

  1648. employees,

  1649. corporate

  1650. employees,

  1651. small business

  1652. owners,

  1653. preachers and

  1654. counselors,

  1655. all of us

  1656. can bring

  1657. glory to

  1658. God in

  1659. what we

  1660. do.

  1661. We can

  1662. all storm

  1663. the world

  1664. with the

  1665. gospel,

  1666. by the

  1667. power of

  1668. the gospel,

  1669. for the

  1670. love of

  1671. people,

  1672. and for

  1673. the love

  1674. of God.

  1675. See,

  1676. we infiltrate

  1677. the workplace

  1678. with the

  1679. gospel when

  1680. and only

  1681. when we

  1682. let the

  1683. gospel

  1684. infiltrate

  1685. every area

  1686. of our

  1687. life.

  1688. So then

  1689. culture is

  1690. then engaged

  1691. by the

  1692. gospel in

  1693. us,

  1694. in our

  1695. workplaces.

  1696. So why

  1697. do we

  1698. work?

  1699. The how

  1700. comes out

  1701. of why

  1702. we work.

  1703. we work

  1704. to bring

  1705. glory to

  1706. God.

  1707. We work

  1708. to be

  1709. generous.

  1710. Now,

  1711. if you

  1712. notice the

  1713. five reasons

  1714. that I

  1715. gave you,

  1716. there are

  1717. no selfish

  1718. reasons.

  1719. There are

  1720. no self-centered

  1721. me reasons.

  1722. We don't

  1723. work for

  1724. ourselves.

  1725. Sure,

  1726. we have

  1727. bills.

  1728. Sure,

  1729. we pay

  1730. our bills.

  1731. Sure,

  1732. we have

  1733. to buy

  1734. groceries.

  1735. We take

  1736. care of

  1737. our

  1738. families.

  1739. but

  1740. nothing

  1741. self-focused.

  1742. We're

  1743. to be

  1744. focused on

  1745. others in

  1746. God's

  1747. kingdom.

  1748. Because the

  1749. gospel leads

  1750. to a heart

  1751. change.

  1752. And when the

  1753. heart changes,

  1754. our want-tos

  1755. change as

  1756. well.

  1757. What we

  1758. want to

  1759. do.

  1760. So out of

  1761. the why,

  1762. why we

  1763. work,

  1764. the how

  1765. we work.

  1766. Why we

  1767. work because

  1768. of the

  1769. gospel,

  1770. how do

  1771. we work?

  1772. How do

  1773. we live?

  1774. I made

  1775. an assumption

  1776. this morning.

  1777. I assume

  1778. that everyone

  1779. in this

  1780. room are

  1781. Christians.

  1782. And the

  1783. assumption

  1784. was,

  1785. or is,

  1786. because you

  1787. can't live

  1788. this way

  1789. without

  1790. Christ.

  1791. You cannot

  1792. live and

  1793. work these

  1794. five ways.

  1795. You can

  1796. try.

  1797. But you

  1798. can't work

  1799. this way

  1800. without

  1801. Christ.

  1802. In

  1803. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  1804. chapter 4

  1805. and in

  1806. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  1807. chapter 2,

  1808. both texts

  1809. come after

  1810. deep doctrinal

  1811. statements about

  1812. who you are

  1813. as a

  1814. Christian.

  1815. Ephesians

    Ephesians 4:17

  1816. chapter 4

  1817. verse 17

  1818. says,

  1819. Now this I

  1820. say and

  1821. testify in

  1822. the Lord

  1823. that you

  1824. must no

  1825. longer walk

  1826. as the

  1827. Gentiles do

  1828. in the

  1829. futility of

  1830. their minds.

  1831. They are

  1832. darkened in

  1833. their

  1834. understanding,

  1835. alienated from

  1836. the life of

  1837. God because

  1838. of the

  1839. ignorance that

  1840. is in

  1841. them due

  1842. to their

  1843. hardness of

  1844. heart.

  1845. They have

  1846. become callous

  1847. and have

  1848. given themselves

  1849. up to

  1850. sensuality,

  1851. greedy to

  1852. practice every

  1853. kind of

  1854. impurity.

  1855. But that

  1856. is not the

  1857. way you

  1858. learn Christ.

  1859. Assuming that

  1860. you have heard

  1861. about Him and

  1862. were taught in

  1863. Him as the

  1864. truth is in

  1865. Jesus, to

  1866. put off your

  1867. old self which

  1868. belongs to your

  1869. former manner of

  1870. life and is

  1871. corrupt through

  1872. deceitful desires

  1873. and to be

  1874. renewed in the

  1875. spirit of your

  1876. minds and to

  1877. put on the

  1878. new self created

  1879. after the

  1880. likeness of

  1881. God in true

  1882. righteousness and

  1883. holiness.

  1884. Put off the

  1885. old self.

  1886. Put on the

  1887. new.

  1888. You are a

  1889. Christian.

  1890. You are born

  1891. again.

  1892. You are bought

  1893. with the blood

  1894. of Jesus Christ.

  1895. Live like it.

  1896. Big doctrinal

  1897. statement.

  1898. 1 Peter 2.

  1899. verse 9 and

  1900. 10.

  1901. But you are a

  1902. chosen race, a

  1903. royal priesthood, a

  1904. holy nation, a

  1905. people for His

  1906. own possession, that

  1907. you may proclaim the

  1908. excellency of Him who

  1909. called you out of

  1910. darkness into His

  1911. marvelous light.

1912. Once you were not a

  1913. people, but now you

  1914. are God's people.

  1915. Once you had not

  1916. received mercy, but

  1917. now you have

  1918. received mercy.

  1919. mercy.

  1920. You are a chosen

  1921. race.

  1922. You are a royal

  1923. priesthood, and the

1924. only way that you are

  1925. a royal priesthood is

  1926. that you are adopted

  1927. into the family of

  1928. God royalty.

  1929. So the assumption

  1930. is that everyone in

  1931. here is a Christian.

1932. And it is a mistake

  1933. for me to assume

  1934. that.

  1935. Our text tells us

  1936. you cannot live this

  1937. way without being a

  1938. Christian.

  1939. So are you a

  1940. chosen race?

  1941. Are you a royal

  1942. priesthood?

  1943. Are you a holy

  1944. nation?

  1945. Do you know Jesus

  1946. as your Savior?

1947. Do you work to His

  1948. glory or to your

  1949. own?

  1950. See, work really

  1951. becomes a worship

  1952. issue.

  1953. When you really

  1954. unfold it, when you

  1955. really peel back all

  1956. the layers, do you

  1957. work to worship

  1958. yourself or do you

  1959. work to worship

  1960. God?

  1961. And that is the

  1962. question we have to

1963. ask and that we have

  1964. to answer this

  1965. morning.

  1966. So when we see

  1967. our, our, uh, uh,

  1968. what's it called?

  1969. What's it called,

  1970. Nathan?

  1971. Our Christ family

  1972. exists to, yeah, our

  1973. vision.

  1974. It's called a vision.

  1975. Hey, John, delete that

  1976. part out of the

  1977. recording.

  1978. When you see our

  1979. vision, we exist to

  1980. proclaim, display, and

  1981. experience the

  1982. supremacy of Christ in

  1983. all things.

  1984. It becomes a worship

  1985. issue.

  1986. Work is a worship

  1987. issue.

1988. And I think as we go

  1989. through this sermon

  1990. series, we're going to

  1991. see that every topic

  1992. comes down to a

  1993. worship issue.

  1994. Every topic.

  1995. Do we worship

  1996. ourselves?

  1997. Do we worship

  1998. culture?

  1999. Do we worship

  2000. whatever big thing it

  2001. is?

  2002. Or do we worship

  2003. the creator?

  2004. Let's pray.
