  1. Take out the copy of God's Word I hope you brought with you today.

  2. Go ahead and turn to 1 Timothy chapter 6.

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  3. !

  4. And we started out this series in 1 Corinthians chapter 9, kind of set as our theme for it, verses 22 and 23, which read,

    1 Corinthians 9 chapter mention

  5. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.

  6. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessing.

  7. And so we see that Paul was in this process as he lived in this world of self-denial and self-control,

  8. of denying himself some of the privileges bought for him in the gospel, but for a greater joy.

  9. He was willing to trade some of his liberty to do certain things, act certain ways,

  10. in order that he might see some come to know Christ and share with them in its blessing.

  11. And so we have picked up a number of topics and addressed it from this perspective.

  12. And this morning's topic is Christ and money.

  13. And we certainly live, as Americans, in a culture that is incredibly consumeristic.

  14. I would say if there's a defining characteristic of American culture, it is consumerism.

  15. It controls how we think.

  16. It controls our desires.

  17. We live in a place that is about consumption.

  18. So how should we as Christians think about this part of our culture?

  19. How should we act in regards to it?

  20. And how should we interact with it for the sake of the gospel, to advance God's kingdom in this world?

  21. The scriptures certainly are not silent on this topic.

  22. It doesn't take me long to find a main text or proof text.

  23. The hard thing about preparing a sermon of this nature is to decide what to disclude.

  24. What do we not talk about?

  25. What proof verses do I not use?

  26. Because the Bible is full of conversation about money.

  27. Christ talks about it.

  28. Paul talks about it.

  29. John talks about it.

  30. James talks about it.

  31. It is everywhere about the scriptures.

  32. So before we begin plowing through much of that, let's pray together.

  33. And I'll get cranky.

  34. Father, we love you and I thank you for these people.

  35. I thank you that you have drawn us together this morning and that you care about all of our eternal souls.

  36. I thank you that we hold in our hands the written word of God that certainly was written by men and addressed to men, but was inspired by your Holy Spirit.

  37. And it means something for our lives today.

  38. So I pray, God, by your spirit that you will apply the truths we discussed today to our individual lives.

  39. We might understand what it looks like to worship you with all that we have.

  40. And I pray this in Christ's name.

  41. Amen.

  42. Amen.

  43. So let me start not with the main text that I had to turn to.

  44. Although I promised to get there very briefly.

  45. But let me start in Mark chapter 4, verse 18 and 19, which is the parable of the sower.

    Mark 4:18

  46. You're welcome to try to keep up with me, but I'm going to cruise and not wait for the flipping pages to stop.

  47. Okay.

  48. The way I want to start this is with a stern warning.

  49. Wealth, money has been given to us for our benefit, but it has many, many dangers.

  50. And so I want to start this morning by setting the stage of the danger of possession.

  51. So Mark chapter 4, verses 18 and 19, towards the end of the parable of the sower.

    Mark 4:18

  52. Jesus says,

  53. And others are the ones sown among thorns.

  54. They are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches

  55. and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

  56. These are those who the truth of Christ has been sown into their lives,

  57. but because of the deceitfulness of treasure, the deceitfulness of consumerism,

  58. that truth is choked out.

  59. 1 Timothy chapter 6, verse 10,

    1 Timothy 6:10

  60. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils.

  61. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith

  62. and pierced themselves with many pains.

  63. Luke chapter 18, verses 24 and 25,

    Luke 18:24

  64. Jesus says,

  65. How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God,

  66. for it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle

  67. than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.

  68. Because why?

  69. Because they love their money.

  70. And I'll remind you that right after that, his disciples said,

  71. Then how can anybody get in?

  72. He said, With God, all things are possible.

  73. But that's an aside.

  74. Luke chapter 12, verse 33 and 34,

    Luke 12:33

  75. Jesus instructs,

  76. Sell your possessions and give to the needy.

  77. Provide yourselves with money bags that do not grow old,

  78. with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail,

  79. where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.

  80. For where your treasure is,

  81. there your heart will be awesome.

  82. Where your value, where you place value is what you desire.

  83. It's reflective of what you most desire.

  84. Money has value, right?

  85. In America, the value of our money is declining rather rapidly.

  86. But the bills that we pull out of our wallets,

  87. the coins that we carry,

  88. the zeros and ones that are represented by our bank accounts and on our cards,

  89. have value.

  90. We've all decided together that we will use this currency to buy and sell goods.

  91. But beyond that, it has value to show what we value.

  92. College students, you value education.

  93. So you spend money on education.

  94. Lots of money on education.

  95. We all value entertainment.

  96. I'm sure way too much.

  97. So we spend money on Netflix and baseball games.

  98. Things of that nature.

  99. I'm not saying these things are bad.

  100. But what I'm saying is that the way we spend our money shows what we most care about.

  101. And nothing, nothing in this world is free.

  102. Save the free gift of the gospel.

  103. But nothing else is free.

  104. A group of us yesterday from Christ's family went with Set Free Ministries out of Gainesville

  105. to Atlanta to minister to homeless people living under bridges.

  106. Doesn't sound like an expensive thing to do,

  107. but we rode together in a 12-passenger van that consumes fuel.

  108. And we had to fuel it up to get down there.

  109. And gas costs money.

  110. Everything that we do as a church and as Christians is going to cost us something to accomplish it.

  111. So how we're spending our money is going to show what we most value.

  112. Luke chapter 16, verse 13.

    Luke 16:13

  113. Jesus says,

  114. No servant can serve two masters.

  115. For either he will hate the one and love the other,

  116. or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

  117. You cannot serve God and money.

  118. And here's the shocking truth about American Christianity.

  119. The church is failing, failing to serve God with its money.

  120. I'll say I believe that this church does a much better job of this than most.

  121. So I'm not mostly getting on to you at this point.

  122. But the American church is failing.

  123. I read a, I was going to say a great article,

  124. it was actually kind of a repressing article in Christianity Today

  125. that was written out of a study called Passing the Plate.

  126. And in this article I discovered that Christian evangelicals,

  127. so not all Christians in America,

  128. but just those who claim to be evangelicals,

  129. those who believe that the church's modus operandi

  130. is to share the gospel and to carry the gospel to the world.

  131. The average evangelical Christian gives 2.3% of their income.

  132. 2.3%.

  133. Now, get this.

  134. If they gave 10%,

  135. which I believe is the easy minimum,

  136. if they gave 10%,

  137. Christian evangelicals would be giving

  138. $85.5 billion more per year.

  139. What a staggering figure.

  140. I can't even begin to tell you what that would accomplish.

  141. I can't even wrap my mind around $85.5 billion more.

  142. That's a figure, I abbreviated it.

  143. We don't even write that out.

  144. That's a crazy large number.

  145. $85.5 billion per year.

  146. Now, of those Christians who say they're committed Christians,

  147. I would argue the definition here,

  148. but committed Christians who say they attend church

  149. at least twice a month.

  150. But we're narrowing the field a little bit more.

  151. Those who attend at least twice a month,

  152. catch this.

  153. Those who make less than $12,500 a year

  154. give 7% of their income,

  155. which is a figure that's not even touched

  156. until a household makes more than $90,000 a year,

  157. and they give 8.8%.

  158. So if you have any idea that someday

  159. when you make more money,

  160. you'll begin to give.

  161. You don't really give now

  162. because things are real tight now.

  163. But, you know, someday you're going to get freed up

  164. to give more,

  165. and you're planning on doing that.

  166. The statistics say you're not going to

  167. until you hit six figures.

  168. And even those still aren't reaching 10%,

  169. 8.8%.

  170. These are these six-figure salaries.

  171. It's shocking.

  172. The American church is failing

  173. to serve God with its money.

  174. And the world looks on.

  175. We are totally disillusioned

  176. if we don't think that unbelievers

  177. are watching what we're doing.

  178. They pay attention to the buildings that we build.

  179. And I'm not against large buildings.

  180. Large buildings house lots of people.

  181. I think that's great.

  182. But I am dead set against decadent buildings.

  183. People drive by and see what we care about

  184. when they look at our buildings.

  185. I went through the drive-thru at McDonald's this morning.

  186. You know who else is going through the drive-thru

  187. at McDonald's this morning?

  188. People going to church.

  189. Everyone, I would guess, going to church.

  190. The people working minimum wage at McDonald's

  191. pay attention to the kind of cars we're driving.

  192. They pay attention to what we're ordering.

  193. They notice what we care about.

  194. And if we're going to live in a consumeristic culture,

  195. I think this is one way,

  196. not the only way,

  197. but this is one way

  198. that we can so easily,

  199. as believers,

  200. set ourselves apart

  201. from the rest of the world.

  202. Not without personal sacrifice.

  203. I'm not saying it'll be easy personally.

  204. But a simple thing

  205. that can change about the way we live

  206. and show people

  207. that we care about something different

  208. than what they care about.

  209. So this morning,

  210. I want you to hear me

  211. so carefully

  212. that my heart is the heart of Paul

  213. in 2 Corinthians 12, 14,

  214. when he said,

  215. I seek not what is yours,

  216. but you.

  217. This is not a guilt you into giving

  218. sermon

  219. for our sake.

  220. This is a guilt you into giving sermon

  221. for your sake.

  222. We have denied you discipleship.

  223. We don't teach you

  224. that you ought to give

  225. all that you have

  226. for the cause of Christ.

  227. We are denying you

  228. immense joy.

  229. We don't do that.

  230. So let's look.

  231. 1 Timothy,

    1 Timothy 6:17–19

  232. chapter 6,

  233. verse 17

  234. through 19.

  235. All right.

  236. As for the rich

  237. in this present age,

  238. charge them not to be haughty,

  239. nor to set their hopes

  240. on the uncertainty of riches,

  241. but on God,

  242. who richly provides us

  243. with everything to enjoy.

  244. They are to do good,

  245. to be rich in good works,

  246. to be generous

  247. and ready to share,

  248. thus storing up treasure

  249. for themselves

  250. as a good foundation

  251. for the future,

  252. so that they may take hold

  253. of that

  254. which is truly

  255. life.

  256. Well,

  257. this morning,

  258. I just have

  259. two points

  260. from our exegesis

  261. of this text,

  262. and then

  263. four practical steps

  264. that we can take.

  265. Let me begin by saying

  266. many of you already

  267. may have

  268. dismissed this text

  269. previously

  270. or maybe even

  271. this morning

  272. as I read

  273. as for the rich

  274. in this present age

  275. in your mind

  276. immediately said,

  277. great,

  278. I'm off the hook.

  279. Fantastic.

  280. You're not rich

  281. from your perspective,

  282. but you are rich

  283. from the perspective

  284. of the rest

  285. of the world.

  286. College students,

  287. you are in

  288. the 90th percentile

  289. of income earners

  290. in the world.

  291. 90th percentile.

  292. 90% of the world

  293. makes less money

  294. than you do.

  295. As strapped as you are,

  296. you are wealthy

  297. in comparison.

  298. Now,

  299. I understand the cost

  300. of living in America

  301. is higher.

  302. I'm not saying

  303. that you should live

  304. on a dollar a day

  305. like some people

  306. in the world

  307. are able to do.

  308. I get that.

  309. But I believe

  310. that Paul's writing

  311. as he's carried along

  312. by the Spirit of God

  313. is for us

  314. as for the rich.

  315. none of us.

  316. Probably shouldn't

  317. just say that,

  318. but I don't think

  319. any of us

  320. have ever really

  321. been hungry.

  322. I'll be hungry

  323. later.

  324. I mean,

  325. probably that's how

  326. I'll know

  327. I should be wrapping

  328. things up.

  329. My stomach will begin

  330. telling me I'm hungry,

  331. but I've never

  332. really been

  333. truly hungry.

  334. I've never really

  335. lacked.

  336. I might think

  337. I've lacked.

  338. I might think

  339. I haven't had

  340. something that

  341. I really needed.

  342. I've always had

  343. everything I needed.

  344. I never worried

  345. about where

  346. my next meal

  347. would come from.

  348. There's always

  349. been food in my

  350. cabinet and in my

  351. fridge.

  352. I have never

  353. walked it

  354. for anything.

  355. We are rich.

  356. If we have

  357. any lack,

  358. it's so easy

  359. to go get

  360. what we need.

  361. There's so much

  362. wealth in this

  363. country.

  364. We are the

  365. rich.

  366. So point

  367. number one,

  368. hope in money

  369. is no hope

  370. at all.

  371. Hope in money

  372. is no hope

  373. at all.

  374. Verse 17,

  375. Paul instructs

  376. Timothy to

  377. instruct us

  378. that we ought

  379. not to be

  380. haughty.

  381. Why?

  382. Because riches

  383. are uncertain.

  384. The NASB

  385. renders the

  386. word haughty

  387. as conceited.

  388. The Greek

  389. word means

  390. high-minded

  391. or proud.

  392. We ought

  393. not think

  394. we are

  395. something

  396. because we

  397. have things.

  398. We ought

  399. not think

  400. we have

  401. figured it

  402. out,

  403. that we

  404. have earned

  405. it,

  406. that we

  407. are something

  408. to be

  409. bragged

  410. about.

  411. Why?

  412. Because God

  413. gave it to you.

  414. You may

  415. have a high-paying

  416. job, but you

  417. have worked

  418. very hard

  419. to get.

  420. But you

  421. have worked

  422. very hard

  423. by what

  424. power?

  425. God's.

  426. The talents

  427. that you

  428. employ to

  429. earn income

  430. given to you

  431. by God.

  432. You have

  433. nothing apart

  434. from him.

  435. Previously,

  436. in this chapter,

  437. chapter 6,

  438. verse 7,

  439. Paul writes,

  440. we brought

  441. nothing into

  442. the world,

  443. and we

  444. cannot take

  445. anything out

  446. of it.

  447. I'm sure

  448. you've heard

  449. this before,

  450. you never

  451. see the

  452. U-Haul

  453. behind the

  454. hearse.

  455. It can't

  456. go with

  457. you.

  458. All

  459. throughout

  460. history,

  461. wealthy

  462. men have

  463. been trying

  464. to take

  465. possessions

  466. with them.

  467. That's

  468. what the

  469. pyramids

  470. are about,

  471. massing

  472. up their

  473. wealth so

  474. that they

  475. could have

  476. it in

  477. the

  478. afterlife.

  479. Guess

  480. what?

  481. It was

  482. dug up,

  483. and people

  484. took it

  485. and put

  486. it in

  487. the

  488. museum.

  489. It

  490. didn't

  491. go with

  492. them.

  493. You

  494. cannot

  495. take it

  496. with you.

  497. It was

  498. given to

  499. you as a

  500. gift,

  501. and it

  502. came from

  503. my

  504. mother's

  505. womb,

  506. and naked

  507. shall I

  508. return.

  509. The Lord

  510. gave,

  511. and the

  512. Lord is

  513. taken away.

  514. Now remember,

  515. he says this

  516. right after his

  517. whole family

  518. is taken from

  519. him,

  520. and all of

  521. his possessions.

  522. His health

  523. hasn't been

  524. attacked yet,

  525. but everything

  526. he owned,

  527. gone.

  528. And then he

  529. says,

  530. blessed be

  531. the name

  532. of the

  533. Lord.

  534. Did Job

  535. hope in

  536. what he

  537. had,

  538. or in

  539. the God

  540. who had

  541. given it

  542. to him?

  543. Most

  544. certainly,

  545. the God

  546. who gave

  547. it to him.

  548. God richly

  549. provides for

  550. us everything

  551. to enjoy.

  552. Have you

  553. ever heard

  554. this pulled

  555. right out

  556. of its

  557. context?

  558. I have,

  559. about every

  560. time I've

  561. ever talked

  562. about money,

  563. any group

  564. of Christians.

  565. Yeah,

  566. but Nathan,

  567. God gives

  568. us everything

  569. to enjoy.

  570. Yeah,

  571. you should

  572. read the

  573. rest of

  574. that chapter.

  575. It concludes

  576. in a much

  577. different way

  578. than you

  579. think.

  580. Let's

  581. look quickly

  582. at 1

    1 John 2 chapter mention

  583. John

  584. chapter 2,

  585. 15 through

  586. 17.

  587. The little

  588. context,

  589. even if

  590. we don't

  591. read the

  592. rest of

  593. the text.

  594. In 1

  595. Timothy,

  596. John writes,

  597. Do not

  598. love the

  599. world or

  600. the things

  601. in the

  602. world.

  603. If anyone

  604. loves the

  605. world,

  606. the love

  607. of the

  608. Father

  609. is not

  610. in him.

  611. For all

  612. that is

  613. in the

  614. world,

  615. the desires

  616. of the

  617. flesh,

  618. and the

  619. desires

  620. of the

  621. eyes,

  622. and pride

  623. of life,

  624. is not

  625. from the

  626. Father,

  627. but is

  628. from the

  629. world.

  630. And the

  631. world is

  632. passing

  633. away,

  634. along

  635. with its

  636. desires,

  637. but whoever

  638. does the

  639. will of

  640. God

  641. abides

  642. forever.

  643. This word

  644. abides is

  645. the Greek

  646. word

  647. meno,

  648. and it

  649. means to

  650. live,

  651. but it

  652. means it

  653. in a much

  654. different way

  655. than we

  656. would use

  657. the word

  658. live.

  659. Some of

  660. your translation

  661. may say

  662. does the

  663. will of

  664. God

  665. lives

  666. forever,

  667. but the

  668. idea behind

  669. it is

  670. a tarrying

  671. in Christ.

  672. It's life

  673. in Christ.

  674. It's true

  675. life.

  676. It's not

  677. just being

  678. cognizant

  679. and aware,

  680. it's being

  681. with the

  682. one we were

  683. meant to be

  684. with.

  685. It's about

  686. being found

  687. in Christ

  688. that our

  689. redemption

  690. is complete,

  691. that our

  692. relationship

  693. with God

  694. is restored.

  695. True

  696. life.

  697. Which

  698. brings us

  699. to my

  700. second point.

  701. Firstly,

  702. hope in

  703. money is

  704. no hope

  705. at all.

  706. Secondly,

  707. we are

  708. given money

  709. for our

  710. eternal

  711. joy.

  712. And that's

  713. what people

  714. miss when

  715. they read

  716. this and

  717. think that

  718. it's a

  719. justification

  720. to just

  721. amass for

  722. themselves

  723. stuff and

  724. things to

  725. enjoy here

  726. and now.

  727. They miss

  728. that there's

  729. an eternal

  730. purpose for

  731. the things

  732. that they've

  733. been given.

  734. Verse 18

  735. and 19,

  736. they are to

  737. do good,

  738. to be rich

  739. in good works,

  740. to be generous

  741. and ready to

  742. share.

  743. Thus storing up

  744. treasure for

  745. themselves is a

  746. good foundation

  747. for the future

  748. so they may

  749. take hold of

  750. that which is

  751. truly life.

  752. life.

  753. The things

  754. given to you

  755. are not given

  756. to you to

  757. enjoy the

  758. things.

  759. They're given

  760. to you as a

  761. resource for

  762. what?

  763. Verse 18,

  764. to do good,

  765. to be rich in

  766. good works,

  767. to be generous,

  768. ready to share.

  769. That's why they

  770. were given to

  771. you.

  772. Why?

  773. For your

  774. eternal joy,

  775. that you might

  776. store up

  777. treasure and

  778. take hold of

  779. that which is

  780. truly life.

  781. life in Christ.

  782. That you might

  783. have more of

  784. Him,

  785. not more

  786. stuff.

  787. And you see

  788. the deceitfulness

  789. of the stuff.

  790. You see that we

  791. have it and we

  792. want it and

  793. Satan tells us

  794. it's okay to

  795. have it.

  796. And constantly

  797. throughout the

  798. scriptures we're

  799. taught it's for

  800. you but for a

  801. greater thing.

  802. You trade it

  803. for greater joy.

  804. That's the way

  805. we're called

  806. to live.

  807. Good works.

  808. Ephesians 2,

    Ephesians 2:10

  809. verse 10,

  810. for we are His

  811. workmanship,

  812. created in Christ

  813. Jesus for good

  814. works,

  815. which God

  816. prepared beforehand

  817. that we should

  818. walk in them.

  819. I can't tell you

  820. exactly what you

  821. should do with

  822. all of your

  823. resources and

  824. where you should

  825. serve and how

  826. you should spend

  827. that money,

  828. but certainly

  829. God can.

  830. Because you're

  831. His workmanship,

  832. created in Christ.

  833. You have the

  834. Spirit of God

  835. within you.

  836. For good works,

  837. prepared beforehand

  838. that you should

  839. walk in them.

  840. God's got

  841. marching orders

  842. for you,

  843. so don't ask

  844. me what you

  845. should do with

  846. your money.

  847. Ask Him.

  848. I promise

  849. He'll tell you.

  850. And we're to be

  851. generous and

  852. ready to share.

  853. I don't know

  854. how often you

  855. read your

  856. English translations

  857. and wonder why

  858. things seem

  859. redundant.

  860. that felt redundant

  861. to me when I

  862. read it.

  863. Paul, why

  864. did you say

  865. generous and

  866. ready to share?

  867. Those are two

  868. things kind of

  869. synonymous,

  870. and that always

  871. causes me to

  872. learn Greek a

  873. couple of days

  874. ahead of you

  875. so that I can

  876. help you

  877. understand it.

  878. Fascinating here.

  879. Both of these

  880. words in Greek

  881. are adjectives.

  882. They are

  883. speaking of,

  884. they're modifying

  885. the subject,

  886. which is

  887. the rich,

  888. us,

  889. we are to be

  890. generous and

  891. ready to share.

  892. And they

  893. mean simply

  894. we're to be

  895. generous actively.

  896. So the word

  897. translated generous

  898. is a pretty good

  899. translation.

  900. We're to be

  901. philanthropic,

  902. giving.

  903. We're to hold

  904. loosely to money

  905. and be willing

  906. to share it

  907. with others.

  908. The Greek

  909. term translated

  910. ready to share

  911. carries with it

  912. the idea of

  913. maintaining social

  914. activity in

  915. such a way

  916. that you are

  917. forcing others

  918. to take

  919. what is yours.

  920. So it's a

  921. constant

  922. pouring out

  923. of the things

  924. that have been

  925. given to you

  926. into the hands

  927. of others.

  928. Generous

  929. actively.

  930. I think that's

  931. cool.

  932. And we are

  933. to live in

  934. this way

  935. with the things

  936. that we have

  937. not to be

  938. depressed,

  939. not to

  940. God's

  941. called me

  942. to give

  943. away the

  944. things I

  945. have.

  946. I'll do

  947. that because

  948. I'm going

  949. to be

  950. obedient.

  951. We're not

  952. stoics.

  953. Stoicism was

  954. a horrible

  955. movement in

  956. Christian religion

  957. and it still

  958. kind of infects

  959. us.

  960. All of this

  961. is for our

  962. greater good.

  963. And it's so

  964. cool how every

  965. time we're

  966. bringing more

  967. honor and glory

  968. to God,

  969. we benefit.

  970. It's so

  971. rad that as

  972. we exalt

  973. him, we get

  974. more of him,

  975. we are involved

  976. in his process,

  977. we get to

  978. see him,

  979. and it's

  980. good for us.

  981. You just

  982. think certain

  983. things are

  984. better for you

  985. than Christ.

  986. That's never

  987. true.

  988. Never.

  989. It's idolatry

  990. to think that.

  991. In your life,

  992. ask the question,

  993. would I be

  994. happier if I

  995. had, fill in

  996. the blank to

  997. that, I would

  998. be so much

  999. happier if I

  1000. had, whatever

  1001. drops into that

  1002. spot in your

  1003. mind is an

  1004. idol.

  1005. What you should

  1006. put in that

  1007. spot, Christ.

  1008. I would be

  1009. happier if I

  1010. had more

  1011. Christ.

  1012. Awesome, because

  1013. that's a free

  1014. offer.

  1015. And he's

  1016. going to keep

  1017. on giving

  1018. himself to me.

  1019. Never going

  1020. to run out of

  1021. more Christ.

  1022. I am not a

  1023. decadent person.

  1024. I am actually

  1025. not very tempted

  1026. to live lavishly.

  1027. But there's an

  1028. area of my life

  1029. that I do this

  1030. in because I

  1031. hate car trouble.

  1032. I just despise

  1033. it.

  1034. It's such an

  1035. inconvenience.

  1036. I'm kind of

  1037. mechanically minded,

  1038. but I never

  1039. really learned

  1040. how to work on

  1041. cars.

  1042. Some guys are

  1043. like, cool,

  1044. the car's

  1045. broken.

  1046. I get to

  1047. spend some

  1048. time fixing

  1049. it.

  1050. No thank

  1051. you.

  1052. And I don't

  1053. want new

  1054. vehicles for

  1055. the cool

  1056. factor of a

  1057. new vehicle.

  1058. I don't

  1059. care about

  1060. that at

  1061. all.

  1062. I just

  1063. want reliable

  1064. cars.

  1065. And Sam

  1066. and I have

  1067. cars that

  1068. are paid

  1069. for.

  1070. We believe

  1071. that we've

  1072. been led

  1073. to do

  1074. that.

  1075. They're not

  1076. incredibly

  1077. reliable.

  1078. And I'm

  1079. just nervous

  1080. driving everywhere

  1081. I go.

  1082. And I'm

  1083. going to get

  1084. to the place

  1085. that I'm

  1086. hoping to

  1087. get to.

  1088. My truck

  1089. has over

  1090. 200,000

  1091. miles on it.

  1092. I don't

  1093. know what's

  1094. going to

  1095. happen.

  1096. And often

  1097. in my mind

  1098. I think I

  1099. would just

  1100. be more

  1101. comfortable if

  1102. I had a

  1103. newer car.

  1104. I would

  1105. just feel a

  1106. little bit

  1107. better about

  1108. my life if

  1109. I had a

  1110. car.

  1111. No car

  1112. reliable.

  1113. It's all

  1114. turning to

  1115. dust.

  1116. It's all

  1117. fading away.

  1118. It's not

  1119. eternal.

  1120. And I

  1121. should say

  1122. praise God

  1123. that I can

  1124. hope in

  1125. him.

  1126. He gave me

  1127. this truck.

  1128. If he wants

  1129. it to run

  1130. it'll run.

  1131. If he wants

  1132. it to die

  1133. it'll die.

  1134. And I'll

  1135. have the

  1136. time to

  1137. fix it and

  1138. the money.

  1139. because he

  1140. cares about

  1141. it.

  1142. That should

  1143. be our

  1144. attitude.

  1145. 1 Corinthians

  1146. 15.32

  1147. Paul talks

  1148. about the

  1149. resurrection.

  1150. And he's

  1151. talking about

  1152. the trouble

  1153. of Christian

  1154. living.

  1155. And he

  1156. says if

  1157. there is

  1158. no God

  1159. if the

  1160. dead aren't

  1161. raised

  1162. what should

  1163. we do?

  1164. We should

  1165. eat and

  1166. drink and

  1167. be merry

  1168. for tomorrow

  1169. we die.

  1170. We should

  1171. spend everything

  1172. we have on

  1173. us if there

  1174. is no God.

  1175. But there

  1176. is.

  1177. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 5:6

  1178. chapter 5

  1179. verse 6

  1180. Paul's

  1181. talking about

  1182. widows who

  1183. are self

  1184. indulgent and

  1185. he says but

  1186. she who is

  1187. self indulgent

  1188. is dead even

  1189. while she

  1190. lives.

  1191. If you live

  1192. to serve you

  1193. with your

  1194. resources

  1195. you're dead.

  1196. And the two

  1197. options are that

  1198. you're not

  1199. found in

  1200. Christ.

  1201. You don't

  1202. know him.

  1203. You've never

  1204. placed your

  1205. faith in him.

  1206. He hasn't

  1207. changed your

  1208. heart at all.

  1209. You don't

  1210. desire him.

  1211. If you

  1212. spend all of

  1213. your money

  1214. on you

  1215. because you're

  1216. not a

  1217. Christian that

  1218. makes a

  1219. lot of

  1220. sense.

  1221. You have

  1222. it acknowledged

  1223. with your

  1224. heart or

  1225. with your

  1226. mind that

  1227. there even

  1228. is a

  1229. God.

  1230. That the

  1231. eternal state

  1232. even matters.

  1233. So you better

  1234. eat, drink,

  1235. and be

  1236. merry because

  1237. this is all

  1238. you've got.

  1239. The rest of

  1240. your existence

  1241. is going to

  1242. be hell.

  1243. But if there

  1244. is a God

  1245. and there

  1246. is and you

  1247. are known

  1248. by him,

  1249. you're

  1250. found in

  1251. Christ,

  1252. and you

  1253. don't live

  1254. for him,

  1255. you just

  1256. need to

  1257. wake up.

  1258. You've

  1259. been lulled

  1260. to sleep

  1261. by our

  1262. culture.

  1263. You have

  1264. been told

  1265. that you

  1266. need certain

  1267. things to

  1268. be happy.

  1269. Begin really

  1270. paying attention

  1271. to commercials.

  1272. You know

  1273. what marketing

  1274. people do?

  1275. Their job

  1276. is to convince

  1277. you that

  1278. you're not

  1279. happy,

  1280. that you're

  1281. less of a

  1282. person,

  1283. that you

  1284. can't possibly

  1285. be content

  1286. if you don't

  1287. have the

  1288. thing they're

  1289. trying to

  1290. sell.

  1291. It's with

  1292. everything.

  1293. Ladies,

  1294. makeup,

  1295. all of that

  1296. is about

  1297. making you

  1298. feel ugly

  1299. so you'll

  1300. buy the

  1301. products so

  1302. you can be

  1303. pretty like

  1304. the girl

  1305. commercial.

  1306. Guys,

  1307. have you

  1308. noticed how

  1309. many guy

  1310. products are

  1311. sold to us

  1312. with women?

  1313. If you use

  1314. this deodorant,

  1315. you'll have

  1316. these women.

  1317. It makes no

  1318. sense whatsoever.

  1319. We are so

  1320. stupid.

  1321. We buy it.

  1322. We buy it.

  1323. We swallow

  1324. it right up.

  1325. For a while,

  1326. I lived with

  1327. Jamie and

  1328. Chris.

  1329. They were

  1330. gracious enough

  1331. to me when

  1332. they were

  1333. living in

  1334. Swanee,

  1335. and I

  1336. worked for

  1337. Chris.

  1338. Every day,

  1339. I had to

  1340. drive through

  1341. the Mall of

  1342. Georgia,

  1343. make that

  1344. little trek

  1345. through there.

  1346. Even just

  1347. going through

  1348. an area like

  1349. that where

  1350. everything is

  1351. shiny and

  1352. new,

  1353. and there's

  1354. all those

  1355. new cars,

  1356. and everybody's

  1357. driving new

  1358. cars,

  1359. and I

  1360. think at

  1361. the time

  1362. I was

  1363. driving an

  1364. old Jeep,

  1365. and it

  1366. just suddenly

  1367. starts to

  1368. work into

  1369. you.

  1370. I'm not

  1371. happy.

  1372. I don't

  1373. have

  1374. everything

  1375. else that

  1376. everybody

  1377. else has.

  1378. Dead.

  1379. How

  1380. miserable.

  1381. You've

  1382. been granted

  1383. true life

  1384. now to

  1385. experience

  1386. Christ by

  1387. moment of

  1388. each day,

  1389. and to

  1390. have him

  1391. forever.

  1392. Why do we

  1393. spend money

  1394. on the

  1395. things we

  1396. spend money

  1397. on?

  1398. Turn with

  1399. me to

  1400. Luke chapter

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  1401. 12.

  1402. Derive this

  1403. point with

  1404. a parable

  1405. that Jesus

  1406. told.

  1407. Luke chapter

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  1408. 12, and I'm

  1409. going to start

  1410. reading in

  1411. verse 13.

  1412. Luke records,

  1413. someone in

  1414. the crowd

  1415. said to

  1416. him,

  1417. Teacher,

  1418. tell my

  1419. brother to

  1420. divide the

  1421. inheritance

  1422. with me.

  1423. But he

  1424. said to

  1425. him,

  1426. Jesus said

  1427. to him,

  1428. Man, who

  1429. made me a

  1430. judge or

  1431. arbitrator over

  1432. you?

  1433. So he

  1434. basically said,

  1435. you're asking

  1436. me a question

  1437. that's not

  1438. my job.

  1439. My job is

  1440. not to tell

  1441. you how the

  1442. inheritance

  1443. should get

  1444. worked out.

  1445. That's not

  1446. why I came.

  1447. So then he

  1448. turns to the

  1449. crowd.

  1450. Notice the

  1451. pronoun change.

  1452. Verse 15,

  1453. and then he

  1454. said to them,

  1455. so all those

  1456. who were

  1457. gathered to

  1458. hear him,

  1459. he says,

  1460. take care and

  1461. be on your

  1462. guard against

  1463. all covetousness.

  1464. My assumption

  1465. is he knew

  1466. this man was

  1467. coveting the

  1468. inheritance.

  1469. Against all

  1470. covetousness.

  1471. For one's

  1472. life does not

  1473. consist in the

  1474. abundance of

  1475. his possessions.

  1476. Now, note

  1477. here, he says

  1478. all covetousness.

  1479. You don't have

  1480. to have things

  1481. to worship

  1482. things.

  1483. You can

  1484. certainly

  1485. worship things

  1486. and have

  1487. nothing.

  1488. And he

  1489. told them a

  1490. parable saying,

  1491. verse 16,

  1492. he told them

  1493. a parable saying

  1494. to the whole

  1495. crowd,

  1496. the land of a

  1497. rich man

  1498. produced

  1499. plentifully.

  1500. And he

  1501. thought to

  1502. himself,

  1503. what shall I

  1504. do?

  1505. For I have

  1506. nowhere to

  1507. store my

  1508. crops.

  1509. And he

  1510. said,

  1511. I will do

  1512. this.

  1513. I will tear

  1514. down my

  1515. barns and

  1516. build larger

  1517. ones.

  1518. And there I

  1519. will store

  1520. all my

  1521. grain and

  1522. my goods.

  1523. And I

  1524. will say

  1525. to my

  1526. soul,

  1527. soul,

  1528. you have

  1529. ample goods

  1530. laid up for

  1531. many years.

  1532. Relax,

  1533. eat,

  1534. drink,

  1535. be merry.

  1536. That's not

  1537. familiar?

  1538. God said to

  1539. him,

  1540. fool,

  1541. this night

  1542. your soul

  1543. is required

  1544. of you.

  1545. And the

  1546. things you

  1547. have prepared,

  1548. whose will

  1549. they be?

  1550. So is the

  1551. one who lays

  1552. up treasure

  1553. for himself

  1554. and is not

  1555. rich toward

  1556. God.

  1557. That's an

  1558. interesting

  1559. phrase.

  1560. It's the only

  1561. place it's

  1562. found in the

  1563. New Testament

  1564. is not rich

  1565. toward God.

  1566. And I

  1567. think it

  1568. means simply

  1569. this,

  1570. that we

  1571. are to take

  1572. the possessions

  1573. we have and

  1574. in being rich

  1575. toward God,

  1576. we're meant

  1577. to tell the

  1578. world what

  1579. we value.

  1580. Certainly

  1581. not what

  1582. this rich

  1583. man was

  1584. doing.

  1585. His sin

  1586. was not

  1587. that his

  1588. fields produced

  1589. plentifully.

  1590. It's okay

  1591. to have a

  1592. job that

  1593. pays you

  1594. well.

  1595. We'll get

  1596. to that.

  1597. I hope

  1598. you do.

  1599. That was

  1600. not his

  1601. sin.

  1602. His sin

  1603. was that

  1604. he took

  1605. it and

  1606. he used

  1607. it for

  1608. him.

  1609. He said

  1610. to the

  1611. world,

  1612. what I care

  1613. about is

  1614. comfort.

  1615. I care

  1616. about

  1617. parties.

  1618. I want

  1619. to just

  1620. hang out,

  1621. eat,

  1622. drink,

  1623. be merry.

  1624. It's a

  1625. common

  1626. Greek phrase.

  1627. It was

  1628. a

  1629. c'est la vie,

  1630. enjoy life,

  1631. hedonism.

  1632. That's what

  1633. that phrasing

  1634. meant.

  1635. He used

  1636. that and

  1637. said to

  1638. the world,

  1639. I don't

  1640. care about

  1641. God.

  1642. I'm not

  1643. going to be

  1644. rich toward

  1645. him,

  1646. I'm going

  1647. to be

  1648. rich toward

  1649. me.

  1650. And so

  1651. why

  1652. ultimately

  1653. was his

  1654. soul

  1655. required

  1656. of him?

  1657. Why

  1658. was he

  1659. damned?

  1660. It's

  1661. because he

  1662. didn't

  1663. treasure

  1664. God.

  1665. He

  1666. treasured

  1667. himself.

  1668. Now note

  1669. he turns,

  1670. again we

  1671. have a

  1672. turning of

  1673. attention

  1674. in verse

  1675. 22.

  1676. He says

  1677. to his

  1678. disciples,

  1679. so he's

  1680. making a

  1681. general call

  1682. to the

  1683. crowd to

  1684. say,

  1685. if you

  1686. are part

  1687. of my

  1688. kingdom,

  1689. you're

  1690. not going

  1691. to be

  1692. this

  1693. fool.

  1694. Then he

  1695. turns to

  1696. his

  1697. disciples,

  1698. those who

  1699. were part

  1700. of the

  1701. kingdom,

  1702. and he

  1703. raises the

  1704. bar a little

  1705. bit,

  1706. explains it

  1707. a little

  1708. bit more,

  1709. and says,

  1710. therefore I

  1711. tell you,

  1712. do not be

  1713. anxious about

  1714. your life,

  1715. what you

  1716. will eat,

  1717. nor about

  1718. your body,

  1719. what you

  1720. will put

  1721. on.

  1722. For life

  1723. is more

  1724. than food,

  1725. and the

  1726. body more

  1727. than clothing.

  1728. I believe

  1729. he's talking

  1730. about that

  1731. true life

  1732. in him.

  1733. Consider

  1734. the ravens

  1735. that have

  1736. sowed or

  1737. reap,

  1738. they have

  1739. neither

  1740. storehouse nor

  1741. barn,

  1742. and yet God

  1743. feeds them.

  1744. Of how much

  1745. more value

  1746. are you

  1747. than birds?

  1748. I hope you

  1749. know this

  1750. morning you're

  1751. way more

  1752. valuable than

  1753. birds.

  1754. Created in the

  1755. image of God,

  1756. you're of

  1757. infinite more

  1758. value than

  1759. birds.

  1760. And which of

  1761. you by being

  1762. anxious can

  1763. add a single

  1764. hour to a

  1765. span of life?

  1766. If then you

  1767. are not able

  1768. to do a

  1769. small thing

  1770. as that,

  1771. why are you

  1772. anxious about

  1773. the rest?

  1774. Which time

  1775. do we

  1776. spend doing

  1777. things,

  1778. orienting our

  1779. lives in

  1780. such a way,

  1781. even financially,

  1782. thinking that

  1783. we're extending

  1784. our life?

  1785. Jesus says

  1786. that's a

  1787. really small

  1788. thing,

  1789. and you

  1790. can't

  1791. accomplish

  1792. it.

  1793. Consider

  1794. the lilies

  1795. how they

  1796. grow,

  1797. that neither

  1798. toil nor

  1799. spin,

  1800. yet I

  1801. tell you,

  1802. even Solomon

  1803. in all his

  1804. glory was

  1805. not arrayed

  1806. like one

  1807. of these.

  1808. But if

  1809. God so

  1810. clothes the

  1811. grass which

  1812. is alive

  1813. in the

  1814. field today

  1815. and tomorrow

  1816. is thrown

  1817. into the

  1818. oven,

  1819. how much

  1820. more will

  1821. he clothe

  1822. you,

  1823. or you

  1824. of little

  1825. faith?

  1826. Do not

  1827. seek what

  1828. you are

  1829. to eat

  1830. or what

  1831. you are

  1832. to drink,

  1833. nor be

  1834. worried.

  1835. For all

  1836. the nations

  1837. of the world

  1838. seek after

  1839. these things,

  1840. and your

  1841. Father knows

  1842. that you

  1843. need them.

  1844. Instead,

  1845. seek his

  1846. kingdom,

  1847. and these

  1848. things will

  1849. be added

  1850. to you.

  1851. Seek

  1852. Christ.

  1853. Take hold

  1854. of that which

  1855. is truly

  1856. life.

  1857. Store up

  1858. for yourself

  1859. treasure in

  1860. heaven,

  1861. for moth

  1862. and rust

  1863. does not

  1864. destroy.

  1865. Find your

  1866. pleasure in

  1867. God,

  1868. and the

  1869. necessities

  1870. of life

  1871. they'll

  1872. be there.

  1873. Fear not,

  1874. little

  1875. flock,

  1876. for it

  1877. is your

  1878. father's

  1879. good pleasure

  1880. to give

  1881. you the

  1882. kingdom.

  1883. Sell your

  1884. possessions

  1885. and give

  1886. to the

  1887. needy.

  1888. Provide

  1889. yourselves

  1890. with money

  1891. bags that

  1892. do not

  1893. grow old,

  1894. with a

  1895. treasure in

  1896. the heavens

  1897. that does

  1898. not fail,

  1899. where no

  1900. thief approaches

  1901. and no

  1902. moth

  1903. destroys.

  1904. The writer of

  1905. Hebrews talks

  1906. about a

  1907. kingdom that

  1908. cannot be

  1909. shaken.

  1910. For where

  1911. your treasure

  1912. is,

  1913. there your

  1914. heart,

  1915. will be

  1916. also.

  1917. I fear

  1918. that none

  1919. of us

  1920. really

  1921. use our

  1922. riches

  1923. as a

  1924. proper

  1925. reflection

  1926. of what

  1927. we say

  1928. we believe.

  1929. Wes picked

  1930. out two

  1931. phenomenal

  1932. songs

  1933. before I

  1934. got up

  1935. here and

  1936. preached.

  1937. If we

  1938. all really

  1939. believed

  1940. the verses

  1941. of those

  1942. songs,

  1943. if we

  1944. could sing

  1945. them with

  1946. such gusto

  1947. and actually

  1948. believe them

  1949. and our

  1950. lives

  1951. reflected

  1952. that,

  1953. I have

  1954. no need

  1955. to preach

  1956. this morning.

  1957. I could

  1958. have gone

  1959. up and

  1960. said,

  1961. amen,

  1962. and sat

  1963. down.

  1964. But we

  1965. don't really,

  1966. I don't,

  1967. I say I

  1968. treasure Christ

  1969. above all

  1970. else,

  1971. but I

  1972. don't always

  1973. show that

  1974. the way

  1975. I use

  1976. my resources.

  1977. resources.

  1978. So four

  1979. practical

  1980. application

  1981. points from

  1982. this text.

  1983. Now I

  1984. will tell

  1985. you that I

  1986. am really

  1987. probably not

  1988. the source

  1989. of information

  1990. on how

  1991. you should

  1992. manage your

  1993. money.

  1994. I probably

  1995. could write a

  1996. book about

  1997. what not to

  1998. do with

  1999. your money

  2000. and maybe

  2001. a short

  2002. essay on

  2003. what you

  2004. should do

  2005. with your

  2006. money.

  2007. I praise

  2008. God that I

  2009. married a

  2010. woman who

  2011. is very

  2012. careful with

  2013. money.

  2014. certainly a

  2015. way that I

  2016. am being

  2017. sanctified and

  2018. that we are

  2019. better together

  2020. than I was

  2021. apart from

  2022. her.

  2023. Sam and I

  2024. have rules in

  2025. our house.

  2026. We don't spend

  2027. more than

  2028. $20 without

  2029. talking to

  2030. each other.

  2031. And that's

  2032. really good for

  2033. me because I

  2034. tend to be a

  2035. little bit

  2036. impulsive.

  2037. And it's

  2038. good when I

  2039. have to go,

  2040. ooh, I'm

  2041. going to have

  2042. to talk to

  2043. Sam about

  2044. that and

  2045. give it five

  2046. minutes and I

  2047. go, I don't

  2048. need that.

  2049. That is not

  2050. something necessary

  2051. in my life.

  2052. Sam has

  2053. actually no

  2054. idea how many

  2055. things I

  2056. don't buy.

  2057. because I

  2058. know I

  2059. have to

  2060. talk to

  2061. her about

  2062. it.

  2063. So there's

  2064. a chance you

  2065. might be in a

  2066. relationship or

  2067. some day will

  2068. be where you're

  2069. both really,

  2070. really weak in

  2071. this area.

  2072. And I'd

  2073. suggest that you

  2074. have somebody

  2075. who's not be

  2076. that accountability

  2077. for you as a

  2078. couple.

  2079. But I don't

  2080. intend to be

  2081. quite that

  2082. practical with

  2083. you because I'm

  2084. really not

  2085. qualified for it.

  2086. But here's the

  2087. four things.

  2088. Number one,

  2089. treasure Christ

  2090. more each day.

  2091. The way you

  2092. fend off the

  2093. lies of this

  2094. world, of this

  2095. consumeristic culture,

  2096. I mean, we're in a

  2097. tough place to

  2098. stand against this

  2099. lie.

  2100. It is all around

  2101. us.

  2102. You treasure

  2103. Christ more each

  2104. day.

  2105. How do you do

  2106. that?

  2107. Take a look at

  2108. him.

  2109. Spend some time

  2110. with him in his

  2111. word.

  2112. Get into the

  2113. word of God

  2114. every single

  2115. day.

  2116. That when you

  2117. walk out the

  2118. door in the

  2119. morning, you're

  2120. armed against

  2121. that kind of

  2122. stuff.

  2123. Guys, I know

  2124. a lot of us

  2125. don't function

  2126. well in the

  2127. morning.

  2128. Our brains

  2129. don't really

  2130. click along

  2131. well.

  2132. And you

  2133. might say,

  2134. I do better

  2135. in the evening.

  2136. My quiet

  2137. time is best

  2138. spent in the

  2139. evening.

  2140. What are you

  2141. doing all day

  2142. then?

  2143. Where's the

  2144. armament?

  2145. All day.

  2146. If you're

  2147. going to study

  2148. in the evening,

  2149. fine, that's

  2150. good.

  2151. Spend some time

  2152. in the word of

  2153. God before you

  2154. head out the

  2155. door in the

  2156. morning.

  2157. Number two,

  2158. pray that God

  2159. would kill the

  2160. idolatry of

  2161. your heart.

  2162. All those

  2163. things that you

  2164. do worship,

  2165. those things

  2166. that you do

  2167. need, you

  2168. think you

  2169. need, pray

  2170. daily that God

  2171. would kill that

  2172. in you, that

  2173. you might desire

  2174. only him.

  2175. Thirdly, earn

  2176. so that you

  2177. can give.

  2178. again, I

  2179. am really

  2180. glad that the

  2181. rich farmer's

  2182. produce yielded

  2183. well for him.

  2184. He had a

  2185. great opportunity

  2186. to use his

  2187. riches for his

  2188. eternal joy.

  2189. You should do

  2190. the same.

  2191. Young people,

  2192. I don't know

  2193. what you're

  2194. supposed to

  2195. major in.

  2196. There are

  2197. some better

  2198. majors out

  2199. there than

  2200. others.

  2201. I was a

  2202. sociology major.

  2203. I believed

  2204. I was supposed

  2205. to be.

  2206. You can't

  2207. make money

  2208. as a sociology

  2209. major.

  2210. I hope

  2211. that some

  2212. of you are

  2213. being called

  2214. to and

  2215. obedient to

  2216. becoming

  2217. businessmen,

  2218. studying

  2219. international

  2220. business.

  2221. I hope

  2222. you go

  2223. and make

  2224. millions of

  2225. dollars and

  2226. then you

  2227. spend it all

  2228. generously on

  2229. the kingdom

  2230. of God.

  2231. We need

  2232. that.

  2233. The kingdom

  2234. of God,

  2235. that 85.5

  2236. billion needs

  2237. to be 300

  2238. billion.

  2239. We need

  2240. people who

  2241. are willing

  2242. to go out

  2243. and spend

  2244. their lives

  2245. spending for

  2246. the kingdom.

  2247. So earn

  2248. so that you

  2249. can give.

  2250. John

  2251. Piper is

  2252. famous for

  2253. saying it's

  2254. okay to

  2255. have a six

  2256. figure salary

  2257. but not a

  2258. six figure

  2259. lifestyle.

  2260. I agree.

  2261. You didn't

  2262. earn it.

  2263. It's not

  2264. yours.

  2265. It's given

  2266. to you as

  2267. a gift.

  2268. We have

  2269. to really

  2270. begin to

  2271. talk about

  2272. what we

  2273. want and

  2274. what we

  2275. need and

  2276. how that

  2277. plays into

  2278. our Christian

  2279. living.

  2280. I could

  2281. ramble for

  2282. hours about

  2283. that and not

  2284. really arrive

  2285. at anything

  2286. tangible for

  2287. your life

  2288. but I

  2289. constantly

  2290. ask myself

  2291. that question.

  2292. I don't

  2293. think it's

  2294. wrong for

  2295. me to

  2296. have some

  2297. things I

  2298. want.

  2299. Okay?

  2300. But mostly

  2301. my life is

  2302. about me.

  2303. What's the

  2304. trajectory of

  2305. my life?

  2306. Where is

  2307. God taking

  2308. me and how

  2309. does he

  2310. intend me to

  2311. go along

  2312. that way?

  2313. And I

  2314. mostly find

  2315. that he

  2316. directs me to

  2317. spend my

  2318. money only on

  2319. things that

  2320. I need and

  2321. not really

  2322. much that I

  2323. want.

  2324. I really

  2325. used to have

  2326. a dream of

  2327. owning a

  2328. Porsche

  2329. Speedster,

  2330. 1952

  2331. Porsche

  2332. Speedster.

  2333. It's the

  2334. model of

  2335. car that

  2336. James Dean

  2337. died in.

  2338. If you've

  2339. ever seen

  2340. him, that's

  2341. a cool

  2342. car,

  2343. Porsche

  2344. Speedster.

  2345. And as

  2346. God began

  2347. to get a

  2348. hold of

  2349. this area

  2350. of my

  2351. life, I

  2352. had to

  2353. realize I'm

  2354. not going

  2355. to ever

  2356. own a

  2357. Porsche

  2358. Speedster.

  2359. I had to

  2360. die to

  2361. that dream

  2362. of having

  2363. a Porsche

  2364. Speedster.

  2365. And some

  2366. of you might

  2367. be thinking,

  2368. maybe someday,

  2369. God gives

  2370. good things

  2371. to enjoy.

  2372. If somebody

  2373. gave me a

  2374. Porsche Speedster,

  2375. if one of

  2376. you has a

  2377. Porsche Speedster

  2378. in your

  2379. garage right

  2380. now and

  2381. you gave it

  2382. to me, I

  2383. would sell

  2384. it.

  2385. I'm not

  2386. driving through

  2387. McDonald's

  2388. drive-thru in

  2389. a Porsche

  2390. Speedster.

  2391. I'm not

  2392. going to do

  2393. it.

  2394. I'm not

  2395. going to do

  2396. it.

  2397. I want to

  2398. say to this

  2399. world, with

  2400. everything that

  2401. I have,

  2402. price is more

  2403. precious to

  2404. me than, I

  2405. don't even

  2406. know what that

  2407. costs.

  2408. I don't

  2409. want to

  2410. know.

  2411. Probably an

  2412. $80,000

  2413. vehicle.

  2414. Right?

  2415. So if you

  2416. care about

  2417. it, don't

  2418. give it to

  2419. me because

  2420. I'm going

  2421. to sell

  2422. it.

  2423. It would

  2424. be painful.

  2425. But you're

  2426. going to

  2427. recognize that

  2428. some dreams

  2429. of your life

  2430. are going to

  2431. have to die.

  2432. And as you

  2433. work hard and

  2434. do things and

  2435. you attain and

  2436. you rise up in

  2437. your company and

  2438. you do all that

  2439. which you should

  2440. do, you're

  2441. going to feel

  2442. like in those

  2443. moments that

  2444. you've earned

  2445. a little larger

  2446. flat screen TV.

  2447. Got the money

  2448. now.

  2449. We should do

  2450. it.

  2451. Please trade

  2452. those things for

  2453. greater joy.

  2454. The value of

  2455. those things is

  2456. so fleeting and

  2457. passing.

  2458. With a greater

  2459. joy in Christ,

  2460. you will

  2461. appreciate

  2462. forever.

  2463. Have a

  2464. kingdom,

  2465. eternal mindset

  2466. and earn so

  2467. that you can

  2468. give.

  2469. And then

  2470. number four,

  2471. be a

  2472. disciplined,

  2473. cheerful

  2474. giver.

  2475. I don't

  2476. think that

  2477. we here

  2478. have actually

  2479. put enough

  2480. emphasis

  2481. on giving.

  2482. I know that

  2483. personally,

  2484. I've kind of

  2485. treated money as

  2486. the necessary

  2487. evil to do

  2488. things.

  2489. We kind of

  2490. go,

  2491. we want to

  2492. give.

  2493. I'm sure

  2494. Chris will

  2495. mention it.

  2496. There's a

  2497. can on a

  2498. table as

  2499. you go out

  2500. the door and

  2501. that's where you

  2502. put your

  2503. offering.

  2504. It's kind of

  2505. like we want

  2506. to not make a

  2507. big deal out of

  2508. it.

  2509. We don't want to

  2510. guilt people by

  2511. passing a plate.

  2512. Things like that.

  2513. I don't know if

  2514. we're going to

  2515. change it.

  2516. I don't know.

  2517. But I don't

  2518. think we really

  2519. emphasize it enough.

  2520. It's been a

  2521. disservice to

  2522. you.

  2523. It's an act of

  2524. worship to come

  2525. together and

  2526. give money to

  2527. the work of the

  2528. church.

  2529. That's the

  2530. primary place you

  2531. should give your

  2532. money.

  2533. I'd say first and

  2534. foremost you should

  2535. give your money to

  2536. the church.

  2537. Sam and I have

  2538. this little bookmark,

  2539. so I bookmarked the

  2540. text for today.

  2541. We give to

  2542. Compassion

  2543. International.

  2544. We have a little

  2545. guy that we

  2546. sponsor named

  2547. Shevchenko.

  2548. I call him

  2549. Shev.

  2550. $35 a month and

2551. we do that, but I

  2552. wouldn't do this in

  2553. the neglect of

  2554. giving to the

  2555. church.

  2556. You ought to do

  2557. that first and

  2558. foremost.

  2559. My generation, I'm

  2560. now 32, I went to

  2561. a very large church

  2562. coming up through

  2563. middle school and

  2564. high school, and I

  2565. saw no value in

  2566. giving to that

  2567. church.

  2568. They were

  2569. building massive

  2570. buildings debt-free.

  2571. I didn't see the

  2572. point.

  2573. And I wanted to

  2574. see directly, I

  2575. wanted to see my

  2576. check go to

  2577. something really

  2578. good.

  2579. I actually started

  2580. sponsoring a child

  2581. in those days, and

  2582. I didn't give to

  2583. the church, to my

  2584. regret.

  2585. I didn't give to

  2586. what was going on

  2587. there.

  2588. No one who

  2589. comes here wants

  2590. the money that they

2591. give here to go to

  2592. electricity.

  2593. Am I right?

  2594. In fact, if I

  2595. said, hey, why don't

  2596. you give to the

  2597. kingdom by turning

  2598. the lights on?

  2599. People go, no,

  2600. no, no, I want

  2601. to see it go

  2602. directly to ministry,

  2603. but you know that

  2604. lights are valuable.

  2605. You can see what

  2606. we're doing this

  2607. morning as a result

  2608. of them.

  2609. You can hear me

  2610. talk because we're

  2611. running AC.

  2612. If it were, I'm

  2613. guessing, 105 degrees

  2614. in here, if we

  2615. weren't running the

  2616. AC, you would be

  2617. totally checked out.

  2618. There's value in

  2619. those types of

  2620. things.

2621. And for us to be

  2622. able to as a

  2623. church to go beyond

  2624. that and begin to

  2625. reach this community,

  2626. it's going to take

  2627. money.

2628. We have kind of a

  2629. directive that we've

  2630. prayed about together

  2631. as a church and

  2632. decided that we're

  2633. working toward what

  2634. we call the 90-10

  2635. endeavor.

  2636. I don't know that

  2637. we'll ever get

  2638. there.

  2639. I hope that we

  2640. will, but what

  2641. that means, it is

  2642. our hope one day

  2643. that 10% of the

  2644. money that comes

  2645. into our church

  2646. will go to the

  2647. administrative types

  2648. of things, paying

  2649. utility, things of

  2650. that nature, replacing

  2651. light bulbs.

2652. But the rest of it

  2653. will go to directly

  2654. affect people's lives.

  2655. Set that out ahead

  2656. of us.

  2657. We get a little

  2658. closer to it every

  2659. budget year.

  2660. I hope one day

  2661. that we'll achieve

  2662. that.

  2663. I'm not even sure

  2664. if it's mathematically

  2665. possible, but we

  2666. put that before us

  2667. because we want to

  2668. see money go and

  2669. change people's

  2670. lives.

  2671. Help us go.

  2672. Take us to Atlanta

  2673. to share our day

  2674. with people on the

  2675. bridges.

2676. But we have to have

2677. it to be able to do

  2678. those things.

  2679. So it's important

  2680. that we be disciplined

  2681. and cheerful givers.

  2682. So just as an

  2683. example, and I

  2684. don't do this to

  2685. praise me because

  2686. I'm more of a

  2687. failure with money

  2688. than I am a

  2689. success with it.

  2690. Sam and I give

  2691. more than 10% to

  2692. the church.

  2693. We do it every

  2694. month, first of the

  2695. month.

  2696. I write a check,

  2697. and I won't get

  2698. into the details,

2699. but we do do more

  2700. than 10%.

  2701. Guys, 10% is

  2702. biblical tithing.

  2703. In the Old

  2704. Testament, God gave

  2705. that to the people

  2706. of Israel to provide

  2707. for the Levites.

  2708. That's how they made

  2709. their living because

  2710. they spent all

  2711. of their time serving

  2712. the people in the

  2713. temple.

  2714. That's how they

  2715. lived.

  2716. We're beyond that

  2717. now.

  2718. So it's not a,

  2719. oh, freedom in

  2720. Christ, let me just

  2721. figure out, let me

  2722. pray about what I

  2723. should do.

  2724. 2.3%.

  2725. Those things should

  2726. still be happening.

  2727. Jesus chastises the

  2728. Pharisees because they

  2729. were so legalistic

  2730. about the tithe.

  2731. They tithed even

  2732. their herbs, their

  2733. herbs, their dill,

  2734. their mint.

  2735. They even tied that.

  2736. And Jesus said,

  2737. this you should be

  2738. doing.

  2739. You should be giving

  2740. 10%, but you should

  2741. also be seeking

  2742. justice.

  2743. And he took them

  2744. even beyond that.

2745. And so I have no

  2746. hesitation to say to

  2747. you, start at 10%.

  2748. If you're not doing

  2749. that already, start

  2750. doing it, and then

  2751. pray about going up

  2752. from there.

  2753. I don't think you

  2754. even need to pray

  2755. about 10%.

  2756. Just do it.

  2757. And then go up

  2758. from there.

  2759. And I know because

  2760. I've been there in

  2761. my life, I'm there

  2762. right now.

  2763. Honestly, I would

  2764. say to you, I can't

  2765. afford to give 10%

  2766. of our income.

  2767. You can't do that.

  2768. You can.

  2769. You can.

  2770. God has given you

  2771. everything that you

  2772. have.

  2773. He's commanded you

2774. to give to the work

  2775. of the church.

  2776. He's going to reward

  2777. that.

  2778. He's going to keep

  2779. it coming.

  2780. I promise.

  2781. He'll do that.

  2782. There is a generation

  2783. of givers, sadly,

  2784. that's passing away.

  2785. Sid and Ruth are

  2786. hanging on.

  2787. I'm so glad that

  2788. they're here.

  2789. These are people

  2790. that understand that.

  2791. They've given

  2792. faithfully year after

  2793. year after year

  2794. after year.

  2795. And Sid, in our

  2796. times together, has

  2797. said, God has never

  2798. failed.

  2799. Sid, 83 years?

  2800. 83 years.

  2801. I've got 32.

  2802. He's never failed me.

2803. Let my life and Sid's

  2804. life be a testimony

2805. of you that he will

  2806. never fail you.

  2807. So give.

  2808. Be disciplined.

  2809. Be cheerful.

2810. Start at 10 and go up.

2811. You know, a lot of

  2812. churches now do

  2813. online giving.

  2814. You can automatically

  2815. have it deducted out

  2816. of your account.

  2817. I don't want to say

  2818. we'll never do

  2819. something like that,

2820. but I find that so

  2821. easy.

2822. I want you to have to

  2823. think about what

  2824. you're doing.

  2825. Not be forgetful.

  2826. Don't forget that

2827. part of what we do

  2828. together is give for

  2829. the kingdom.

2830. Consider it an act of

  2831. worship.

  2832. Be disciplined in it.

  2833. And be a cheerful

  2834. giver.

2835. So I hope that this

  2836. morning, as we talk

  2837. about Christ and

  2838. culture, that you're

  2839. allowing this truth to

  2840. run into you.

  2841. I can't see how it's

  2842. possible that any of

2843. us is just okay with

  2844. this.

  2845. That we've all, that

  2846. we've just got it

  2847. figured out.

  2848. And so I believe as a

  2849. result that some

  2850. response is necessary.

  2851. I think after any

2852. sermon, we ought to be

  2853. responding to God.

2854. As he's spoken to us,

2855. we ought to speak back

  2856. to him.

2857. So we have a time that

  2858. we do every Sunday

  2859. together, taking the

  2860. Lord's Supper together.

  2861. It's one of my

  2862. favorite times.

  2863. I hope that it

  2864. hasn't become dogmatic

  2865. for you.

  2866. Another motion to go

  2867. through.

  2868. But we believe that

  2869. together, if we haven't

  2870. already, we ought to

  2871. really point to the

  2872. cross of Christ.

  2873. Where his body was

  2874. broken, his blood was

  2875. spilled on our behalf.

2876. That if we're going to

  2877. treasure him more and

  2878. more each day, we

  2879. certainly should do

2880. that on Sunday as we

  2881. gather together as his

  2882. redeemed people.

  2883. We ought to celebrate

2884. the work that he did

  2885. for us.

2886. And it's not just that.

  2887. We're looking back to

  2888. the sacrifice of

  2889. Christ for the

  2890. redemption, but we're

  2891. also looking forward to

  2892. his return.

  2893. That's a guaranteed

  2894. thing, that our

  2895. redemption is going to

  2896. be completed, that he

  2897. started it and he's

  2898. promised to finish it.

  2899. He's coming back for

  2900. us.

  2901. Eternal promises.

  2902. We should live for

  2903. that.

  2904. Take hold of that

  2905. which is truly life

  2906. now, and that which

  2907. will be forever and

  2908. ever.

  2909. Praise God.

  2910. And the guys are

  2911. going to come play

  2912. right after I get

  2913. done praying.

  2914. We'll have some

  2915. stations set up.

2916. I just ask that you

2917. take some time to ask

  2918. God to examine your

  2919. heart and reveal to

  2920. you any hidden sin.

  2921. I don't expect that

  2922. you'll get this all

  2923. figured out in the

  2924. next five minutes, but

  2925. that you'll take some

  2926. time, that you might

  2927. take the Lord's

  2928. Supper with a clean

  2929. conscience.

  2930. Let's pray together.

  2931. Let's pray together.

  2932. that.
