  1. Today, we're going to begin what I believe, I think, God intends to be three more weeks in chapter 9.

  2. In seeing that the large rejection of the gospel by the nation of Israel does not discredit the gospel.

  3. And that's why Paul is beginning to have this conversation.

  4. The fact that the people who should have gotten it more than any other people by human terms should have understood who the Christ was.

  5. The fact that they rejected him does not discredit the gospel.

  6. And in fact, the unbelief of Israel is consistent with God's promises, with God's person, with God's prophecies, and with God's provision.

  7. You guys proud of me? I'm alliterating now.

  8. We're going to look at those four Ps.

  9. And today, we're going to look at verses 6 through 13 and see that the unbelief of Israel is consistent with God's promises.

  10. But before we do that, let's read together all of chapter 9.

  11. Paul writes,

  12. To them belong the patriarchs.

  13. And from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

  14. But it is not as though the word of God has failed.

  15. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel.

  16. And not all children of Abraham, because they are his offspring.

  17. But through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  18. This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise who are counted as offspring.

  19. For this is what the promise said.

  20. About this time next year, I will return.

  21. And Sarah shall have a son.

  22. And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac,

  23. though they were not yet born and had not done anything either good or bad,

  24. in order that God's purpose of election might continue,

  25. not because of works, but because of him who calls,

  26. she was told,

  27. The older will serve the younger.

  28. As it is written,

  29. Jacob I loved,

  30. but Esau I hated.

  31. What shall we say then?

  32. Is there injustice on God's part?

  33. By no means.

  34. For he says to Moses,

  35. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,

  36. and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

  37. Something that depends not on human will or exertion,

  38. but on God who has mercy.

  39. For the scripture says to Pharaoh,

  40. For this very purpose I have raised you up,

  41. that I might show my power in you,

  42. and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.

  43. So then he has mercy on whomever he wills,

  44. and he hardens whomever he wills.

  45. You will say to me then,

  46. Why does he still find fault?

  47. For who can resist his will?

  48. But who are you,

  49. O man,

  50. to answer back to God?

  51. Will what is molded say to the molder,

  52. Why have you made me like this?

  53. Has the potter no right over the clay

  54. to make out of the same lump

  55. one vessel for honorable use

  56. and another for dishonorable use?

  57. What if God,

  58. desiring to show his wrath

  59. and to make known his power,

  60. has endured with much patience

  61. vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,

  62. in order to make known the riches of his glory

  63. for vessels of mercy,

  64. which he has prepared beforehand for glory,

  65. even us whom he has called,

  66. not from the Jews only,

  67. but also from the Gentiles.

  68. As indeed he says in Hosea,

  69. Those who were not my people,

  70. I will call my people.

  71. And who was not my beloved,

  72. I will call beloved.

  73. And in the very place

  74. where it was said to them,

  75. You were not my people,

  76. there they will be called

  77. sons of the living God.

  78. And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel,

  79. Though the number of the sons of Israel

  80. be as the sand of the sea,

  81. only a remnant of them will be saved.

  82. For the Lord will carry out

  83. this sentence upon the earth

  84. fully and without delay.

  85. And as Isaiah predicted,

  86. If the Lord of hosts

  87. had not left us offspring,

  88. we would have been like Sodom

  89. and become like Gomorrah.

  90. What shall we say then?

  91. That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness

  92. have attained it?

  93. That is,

  94. a righteousness that is by faith?

  95. But that Israel who pursued a law

  96. that would lead to righteousness

  97. did not succeed in reaching the law?

  98. Why?

  99. Because they did not pursue it by faith.

  100. But as if it were based on works,

  101. they have stumbled over the stumbling stone.

  102. As it is written,

  103. Behold, I am laying in Zion

  104. a stone of stumbling

  105. and a rock of offense.

  106. And whoever believes in him

  107. will not be put to shame.

  108. Join me in prayer.

  109. Father God,

  110. certainly you have been good

  111. to your people.

  112. You have rescued us

  113. from the mire of sin.

  114. The place where we could not

  115. rescue ourselves.

  116. No effort on our part

  117. could have pulled us out

  118. of such a dark

  119. and terrible place.

  120. But you have plucked us

  121. from that place.

  122. You have brought us out of darkness

  123. into your marvelous light.

  124. This is a great work of yours.

  125. You have also given us the scriptures

  126. that we might be guided

  127. in our understanding

  128. of the gospel.

  129. And I pray that this day

  130. as we soak in these eight verses

  131. that you will find us humble

  132. being spoken to from above

  133. as your words are inspired.

  134. The words on these pages

  135. translated from the Greek

  136. are inspired

  137. and they're for us

  138. for this day.

  139. And I pray that we will

  140. accept them

  141. as such.

  142. I pray, Father,

  143. you will not find us

  144. haughty intellectuals

  145. standing over the word of God

  146. as if we are gods

  147. judging you

  148. for what you have said.

  149. And I pray that all of this

  150. is the praise and glory

  151. of Jesus Christ.

  152. It's in his name I pray.

  153. Amen.

  154. So we're going to hone in together

  155. on verses 6-13.

  156. Let me say to you

  157. that what we're going to be studying

  158. over the next few weeks

  159. is heavy doctrine.

  160. But it is joyful

  161. to understand and to know.

  162. I would expect

  163. that you will wrestle with it.

  164. I have and I do.

  165. It's a continual process.

  166. But I would ask

  167. that you let the word of God

  168. speak to your life today.

  169. So let's look together

  170. beginning in verse 6.

  171. Paul says it's not as though

  172. the word of God has failed.

  173. The things he referenced

  174. particularly in verse 4

  175. the adoption,

  176. the glory,

  177. the covenants,

  178. the giving of the law,

  179. the worship,

  180. the promises.

  181. It's not that these things

  182. have failed to accomplish

  183. their goal.

  184. In fact,

  185. they will accomplish

  186. the exact goal

  187. they were set out

  188. to accomplish.

  189. Isaiah 55-11

  190. reads,

  191. My word that goes out

  192. from my mouth,

  193. it shall not return

  194. to me empty,

  195. but it shall accomplish

  196. that which I purpose.

  197. It shall succeed

  198. in the thing

  199. for which I sent it.

  200. Many of you

  201. are probably familiar

  202. with that.

  203. Proceeding that,

  204. there's another verse,

  205. verses,

  206. that you're probably

  207. very familiar with

  208. and we don't often

  209. put them together.

  210. Verses 8 and 9

  211. of Isaiah 55,

  212. God says,

  213. For my thoughts

  214. are not your thoughts,

  215. neither are your ways

  216. my ways,

  217. declares the Lord.

  218. For as the heavens

  219. are higher than the earth,

  220. so are my ways

  221. higher than your ways

  222. and my thoughts

  223. than your thoughts.

  224. So God says to us,

  225. You can't fully understand me

  226. because I am God

  227. and you are not.

  228. and my word

  229. which goes forth

  230. will accomplish

  231. the very thing

  232. that it was sent forth

  233. to accomplish.

  234. So the word of God

  235. has not failed

  236. just because

  237. some of Israel

  238. doesn't believe

  239. that Jesus

  240. is the Son of God,

  241. that He is the Messiah,

  242. their Deliverer.

  243. It doesn't mean

  244. the word of God

  245. has failed.

  246. The word of God

  247. is accomplishing

  248. what it was intended

  249. to accomplish.

  250. He goes on to say

  251. the last half,

  252. for not all

  253. who are descended

  254. from Israel

  255. belong to Israel.

  256. And He begins

  257. to frame for us

  258. as He's done

  259. in chapter 2,

  260. verses 28 and 29

  261. of Romans,

  262. that it's those

  263. who belong to Israel

  264. by faith

  265. that are the true Israel.

  266. Those that are

  267. the recipients

  268. of the promise

  269. by faith,

  270. not by the flesh.

  271. Romans 2, 28 and 29

  272. says,

  273. For no one is a Jew

  274. who is merely one outwardly,

  275. nor is circumcision

  276. outward and physical,

  277. but a Jew

  278. is one inwardly,

  279. and circumcision

  280. is a matter

  281. of the heart,

  282. by the Spirit,

  283. not by the letter.

  284. His praise

  285. is not from man,

  286. but from God.

  287. This has always

  288. been the way

  289. of God.

  290. Abraham was a man

  291. justified by

  292. faith.

  293. He believed

  294. in the promises

  295. of God.

  296. He didn't understand

  297. the full realization

  298. of the promises

  299. of God.

  300. He didn't know

  301. how it was

  302. that all the nations

  303. of the world

  304. would be blessed

  305. in his line.

  306. He didn't know

  307. how it was

  308. to happen,

  309. but he knew

  310. that it would,

  311. and he trusted

  312. that God would do

  313. what he said

  314. he would do,

  315. and that is why

  316. Abraham was justified.

  317. Galatians 3,

  318. 7-9 reads,

  319. It is those of faith

  320. who are the sons

  321. of Abraham,

  322. and the scripture

  323. foreseeing that God

  324. would justify the Gentiles

  325. by faith,

  326. preached the gospel

  327. beforehand to Abraham

  328. saying,

  329. In you shall all

  330. the nations be blessed.

  331. So then those

  332. who are of faith

  333. are blessed along

  334. with Abraham,

  335. the man of faith.

  336. Isn't that phenomenal?

  337. The commentary

  338. that Paul gives us

  339. on the promise

  340. given to Abraham,

  341. the Abrahamic covenant,

  342. that the scripture

  343. foreseeing that God

  344. would justify Gentiles

  345. by faith,

  346. preached the gospel

  347. to Abraham

  348. saying,

  349. In you the nations

  350. will be blessed.

  351. It's phenomenal.

  352. And he goes on

  353. to expound on that

  354. in verses 7 and 8

  355. and 9

  356. and 10

  357. and 11 and 12

  358. and 13.

  359. Verse 7 he says,

  360. And not all are children

  361. of Abraham

  362. because there is offspring,

  363. but through Isaac

  364. shall your offspring be named.

  365. This means it is not

  366. the children of the flesh

  367. who are the children of God,

  368. but the children of the promise

  369. are counted as offspring.

  370. For this is what

  371. the promise said

  372. about this time next year

  373. I will return

  374. and Sarah

  375. shall have a son.

  376. Now if you recall

  377. the story

  378. of Sarah and Abraham

  379. long,

  380. long into their years

  381. beyond childbearing age

  382. both of them were,

  383. should not have been

  384. able to have a son.

  385. And God comes

  386. and gives to Abraham

  387. a promise

  388. that he will bless

  389. the nations

  390. in his line.

  391. that his descendants

  392. shall be like

  393. the stars in heaven.

  394. You remember this story?

  395. And Abraham believed him.

  396. He didn't have a clue

  397. how that might happen,

  398. but he believed him.

  399. And Sarah

  400. in her faithlessness

  401. didn't believe

  402. that it would be possible

  403. for her

  404. to bear a son.

  405. Gave to Abraham

  406. Hagar,

  407. their servant.

  408. You recall this

  409. and Abraham

  410. took Hagar

  411. and she had a son

  412. named Ishmael.

  413. Sarah became jealous

  414. of this relationship

  415. and sent Hagar

  416. and Ishmael away.

  417. And it's there

  418. that we see

  419. Genesis 18.10

  420. which is quoted

  421. in verse 9.

  422. About this time

  423. next year I will return

  424. and Sarah

  425. shall have a son.

  426. The promise

  427. is re-given

  428. and then in Genesis

  429. 21.12

  430. it says

  431. through Isaac

  432. shall your offspring

  433. be named.

  434. And the point

  435. that he's making

  436. is that it's not

  437. Abraham's lineage,

  438. it's not just

  439. that they came

  440. from his flesh

  441. that makes them blessed,

  442. but it's the promise

  443. that God gave

  444. that makes them blessed.

  445. Verse 8.

  446. This means

  447. it is not the children

  448. of the flesh

  449. who are children of God

  450. but the children

  451. of the promise

  452. are counted

  453. as offspring.

  454. So you have

  455. Ishmael.

  456. You know who

  457. the descendants

  458. of Ishmael are?

  459. The whole Arab nation.

  460. She doesn't exclude

  461. them from the gospel

  462. but that is the direction

  463. that that lineage

  464. took off in.

  465. In many ways

  466. God blessed Ishmael

  467. as an offspring

  468. of Abraham

  469. gave him lands

  470. helped him thrive

  471. but the promise

  472. was for Isaac.

  473. Verse 10.

  474. And not only so

  475. but also when Rebecca

  476. had conceived

  477. children by one man

  478. our forefather Isaac

  479. so Rebecca

  480. is Isaac's wife

  481. twins

  482. she had twins

  483. she conceived

  484. children

  485. though they were

  486. not yet born

  487. and had done nothing

  488. either good or bad

  489. in order that

  490. God's purpose

  491. of election

  492. might continue

  493. not because of works

  494. but because of him

  495. who calls

  496. she was told

  497. the older

  498. will serve the younger

  499. as it is written

  500. Jacob I loved

  501. but Esau I hated.

  502. So Rebecca's

  503. pregnant with twins

  504. and in this time

  505. there was great

  506. favor

  507. on the first born.

  508. So someone pregnant

  509. with twin boys

  510. although we'd say

  511. they're

  512. the same age

  513. in this case

  514. Esau

  515. was born first

  516. and Jacob

  517. was clinging

  518. to his heel

  519. remember the story

  520. when they were born

  521. the same time

  522. they came out

  523. together

  524. but Esau

  525. culturally

  526. was the favored one

  527. Esau was the one

  528. that should have

  529. gotten the blessing

  530. of his father

  531. Esau was the one

  532. that should have

  533. inherited

  534. his father's lands

  535. and then Jacob

  536. was just to serve

  537. the eldest brother

  538. the work here

  539. that Esau

  540. would have done

  541. his work

  542. that would have

  543. merited him

  544. all this favor

  545. was that he was

  546. born first

  547. which we know

  548. isn't actually

  549. a work of Esau

  550. but that would have

  551. been the thing

  552. credited to him

  553. to be the favored one

  554. but what does God say

  555. the older

  556. will serve the younger

  557. and then Jacob

  558. I have loved

  559. but Esau

  560. I hated

  561. for either of them

  562. had done anything

  563. good or bad

  564. we'll talk about

  565. that verse

  566. in just a bit

  567. we'll frame it

  568. in its context

  569. so you can see

  570. that it is

  571. God

  572. who acts

  573. and not

  574. man

  575. I want you to

  576. hone in on a little

  577. phrase

  578. in verse 11

  579. in order

  580. that God's purpose

  581. of election

  582. might continue

  583. not because of works

  584. but because of him

  585. who calls

  586. and it brings us

  587. to the doctrine

  588. of election

  589. we've been anticipating

  590. in chapter 9

  591. it's not the first time

  592. it's been mentioned

  593. in the book of Romans

  594. upon a careful reading

  595. it's introduced

  596. in large part

  597. in Romans 8

    Romans 8:29

  598. verse 29

  599. for those whom he foreknew

  600. he also predestined

  601. to be conformed

  602. to the image of his son

  603. in order that he might

  604. be the first foregone

  605. among many brothers

  606. and those whom he predestined

  607. he also called

  608. and those whom he called

  609. he also justified

  610. and those whom he justified

  611. he also glorified

  612. there's a sure confidence

  613. in the act of God

  614. when God decides

  615. something will happen

  616. it happens

  617. God plans the ends

  618. and he works the means

  619. to see that

  620. come to reality

  621. and he's expounding

  622. here for us now

  623. what does that mean

  624. what is election

  625. and simply

  626. election is an act of God

  627. before creation

  628. in which he chooses

  629. a people

  630. for salvation

  631. not on account

  632. of any foreseen merit

  633. in them

  634. but only because

  635. of his sovereign

  636. good pleasure

  637. this is

  638. a biblical reality

  639. it will make your head

  640. spin

  641. I promise

  642. it will cause you

  643. to question

  644. many things

  645. we know to be true

  646. of God

  647. but it is taught

  648. in the scriptures

  649. now with it comes

  650. all kinds

  651. of controversy

  652. throughout the ages

  653. this has been a much

  654. debated doctrine

  655. and I'll say to you

  656. that by and large

  657. those who have held

  658. to the doctrine

  659. of election

  660. have won

  661. that debate

  662. you begin to study

  663. church history

  664. and you will see

  665. that the overarching

  666. understanding

  667. of this doctrine

  668. is that it's true

  669. and it's biblical

  670. it's very clearly

  671. taught

  672. but still

  673. much dissension

  674. has existed

  675. around this

  676. not because of the doctrine

  677. we don't ever blame

  678. the doctrine

  679. for that

  680. because men

  681. don't hold dear

  682. to the scriptures

  683. men want to apply

  684. their own understanding

  685. their own wisdom

  686. and their own logic

  687. to debate

  688. this issue

  689. there have been

  690. many labels

  691. that have been put on

  692. people who believe

  693. these things

  694. Calvinists

  695. Reform

  696. that's the famous

  697. one right now

  698. and I would say

  699. to you

  700. coming to a

  701. new place

  702. in my life

  703. that we should

  704. try

  705. at all costs

  706. to avoid

  707. those kinds

  708. of labels

  709. often it's the

  710. easy way to

  711. communicate

  712. what you may

  713. believe about

  714. a certain thing

  715. but you know

  716. that every label

  717. in this world

  718. comes with

  719. all kinds

  720. of baggage

  721. you have to know

  722. that not just

  723. around this topic

  724. but around

  725. every other topic

  726. in the world

  727. that there is

  728. somebody out there

  729. tossing a rock

  730. in the air

  731. ready to hurl it

  732. at the first person

  733. who says

  734. I am a

  735. because they have

  736. some idea

  737. I had to practice

  738. doing this by the way

  739. to get this right

  740. you can imagine

  741. a rock right

  742. they have some idea

  743. that they do not

  744. like about that

  745. person

  746. and when you take

  747. the label

  748. it all comes

  749. with it

  750. Chris and I

  751. got in a conversation

  752. with a man

  753. who had a bag

  754. of rocks

  755. a couple of months

  756. ago

  757. I am glad

  758. he took them

  759. out one at a

  760. time

  761. and hurled

  762. them at us

  763. rather than

  764. beating us

  765. with a bag

  766. he was

  767. furious

  768. at anyone

  769. that might

  770. say they are

  771. reformed

  772. and I think

  773. that his

  774. emotion

  775. was justified

  776. he had had

  777. some experience

  778. with some

  779. young men

  780. that really

  781. frustrated him

  782. and at one point

  783. I had to say

  784. you are not

  785. mad at me

  786. put down the rocks

  787. let's have a

  788. conversation

  789. let's talk

  790. this out

  791. together

  792. these things

  793. come with

  794. so

  795. much

  796. the doctrine

  797. of election

  798. has not

  799. ever caused

  800. any Christian

  801. to live

  802. one way

  803. or necessarily

  804. another

  805. right

  806. the

  807. Calvinist

  808. that you may

  809. know

  810. that's been

  811. unloving

  812. that's

  813. tried to

  814. shrub

  815. these type

  816. of doctrines

  817. down your

  818. throat

  819. that has

  820. been haughty

  821. has been

  822. arrogant

  823. it's not

  824. the fault

  825. of the

  826. doctrine

  827. it's the

  828. fault

  829. of the

  830. lack

  831. of love

  832. and compassion

  833. in their

  834. life

  835. a couple

  836. of weeks

  837. ago

  838. we talked

  839. about the

  840. danger

  841. of

  842. preaching

  843. truth

  844. but doing

  845. so

  846. without

  847. love

  848. and so

  849. I'm saying

  850. all this

  851. because

  852. what I

  853. want you

  854. to do

  855. if you're

  856. sitting

  857. out there

  858. is put

  859. down

  860. your

  861. rocks

  862. I love

  863. Jesus

  864. Christ

  865. I love

  866. the gospel

  867. I

  868. dearly

  869. love

  870. people

  871. and I

  872. want to

  873. see

  874. God's

  875. kingdom

  876. go rampant

  877. throughout

  878. the earth

  879. I love

  880. the scriptures

  881. I think

  882. that they

  883. are sufficient

  884. and inerrant

  885. they're

  886. complete

  887. there's a

  888. part of

  889. me

  890. that wants

  891. to make

  892. my own

  893. little

  894. theological

  895. system

  896. and then

  897. do my

  898. very best

  899. to read

  900. it into

  901. the scripture

  902. that's

  903. called

  904. isogesis

  905. because I

  906. can kind

  907. of neaten

  908. up the

  909. package

  910. in my

  911. own

  912. mind

  913. what do

  914. I do

  915. when I

  916. do

  917. that

  918. I

  919. become

  920. my

  921. own

  922. God

  923. and what

  924. I'm

  925. really

  926. doing

  927. is

  928. worshipping

  929. myself

  930. and I'm

  931. taking the

  932. revelation

  933. of God

  934. and I'm

  935. patting myself

  936. on the

  937. back

  938. I don't

  939. want to

  940. do that

  941. I want

  942. to be

  943. humble

  944. I want

  945. to say

  946. I am

  947. a created

  948. thing

  949. and you

  950. are the

  951. creator

  952. and if

  953. you have

  954. chosen to

  955. reveal a

  956. truth to

  957. me

  958. even though

  959. it may

  960. not

  961. fully

  962. make

  963. sense

  964. in my

  965. thinking

  966. and I

  967. humbly

  968. !

  969. submit to

  970. that

  971. and then I

  972. ask

  973. why?

  974. why?

  975. why are

  976. you

  977. teaching

  978. me

  979. this?

  980. if this

  981. is a

  982. necessary

  983. thing

  984. for me

  985. to

  986. know

  987. why?

  988. did God

  989. just get

  990. carried away

  991. and begin

  992. writing?

  993. and he's

  994. like

  995. that was

  996. too much

  997. I wish

  998. I hadn't

  999. said that

  1000. that's

  1001. going to

  1002. cause

  1003. all kinds

  1004. of issues

  1005. people are

  1006. going to

  1007. be so

  1008. totally

  1009. confused

  1010. about

  1011. that

  1012. if I

  1013. could

  1014. take

  1015. it

  1016. back

  1017. but it's

  1018. already

  1019. been

  1020. written

  1021. the

  1022. scrolls

  1023. have

  1024. been

  1025. reproduced

  1026. now the

  1027. printing

  1028. press

  1029. is

  1030. everywhere

  1031. he

  1032. didn't

  1033. do it

  1034. he knew

  1035. !

  1036. exactly

  1037. what he

  1038. was

  1039. doing

  1040. when

  1041. he

  1042. had

  1043. the

  1044. writers

  1045. of

  1046. the

  1047. Bible

  1048. write

  1049. these

  1050. words

  1051. so

  1052. let's

  1053. be

  1054. humble

  1055. together

  1056. let me

  1057. give you

  1058. a great

  1059. example

  1060. it's a

  1061. really

  1062. famous

  1063. conversation

  1064. between

  1065. a man

  1066. named

  1067. Charles

  1068. Simeon

  1069. and

  1070. John

  1071. Wesley

  1072. Charles

  1073. Simeon

  1074. in

  1075. England

  1076. was the

  1077. leader

  1078. I hope

  1079. I'm

  1080. getting

  1081. this

  1082. right

  1083. of the

  1084. evangelical

  1085. movement

  1086. of the

  1087. Church

  1088. of England

  1089. so

  1090. here's

  1091. a man

  1092. passionate

  1093. about

  1094. evangelism

  1095. actually

  1096. working

  1097. to see

  1098. the

  1099. Church

  1100. of

  1101. England

  1102. become

  1103. evangelistic

  1104. in their

  1105. practice

  1106. and

  1107. John

  1108. Wesley

  1109. who

  1110. is

  1111. the

  1112. founder

  1113. of

  1114. Methodism

  1115. also

  1116. a

  1117. phenomenal

  1118. man

  1119. John

  1120. Wesley

  1121. said to be

  1122. the

  1123. prince

  1124. of

  1125. Armenians

  1126. those

  1127. who

  1128. would

  1129. reject

  1130. the

  1131. doctrine

  1132. of

  1133. election

  1134. although

  1135. he

  1136. really

  1137. didn't

  1138. but we'll

  1139. get into

  1140. that

  1141. later

  1142. Charles

  1143. Simeon

  1144. and

  1145. John

  1146. Wesley

  1147. were

  1148. being

  1149. pressed

  1150. !

  1151. to debate

  1152. by

  1153. lots

  1154. and lots

  1155. of

  1156. us

  1157. the

  1158. unloving

  1159. those

  1160. who

  1161. really

  1162. want

  1163. to see

  1164. the

  1165. big

  1166. guys

  1167. beat up

  1168. on each

  1169. other

  1170. over

  1171. issues

  1172. like

  1173. this

  1174. and

  1175. here's

  1176. the

  1177. conversation

  1178. that they

  1179. had

  1180. as led

  1181. by

  1182. Charles

  1183. Simeon

  1184. Charles

  1185. Simeon

  1186. said

  1187. Wesley

  1188. A few questions.

1189. Pray, sir, do you feel yourself a depraved creature,

1190. so depraved that you would ever have thought of turning to God

1191. if God had not first put it into your heart?

1192. Wesley replied, yes, I do indeed.

1193. Simeon said, and do you utterly despair of recommending yourself to God

1194. by anything you can do,

1195. and look for salvation solely through the blood and righteousness of Christ?

1196. To which Wesley replied, yes, solely through Christ.

1197. But, sir, supposing you were at first saved by Christ,

1198. are you not somehow or other to save yourself afterwards by your own works?

1199. Wesley said, no, I must be saved by Christ from first to last.

1200. Allowing, then, that you were first turned by the grace of God,

1201. are you not in some way or other to keep yourself by your own power?

  1202. Wesley simply said,

  1203. no.

1204. What, then, are you to be upheld every hour and every moment by God

1205. as much as an infant in its mother's arms?

  1206. Wesley said, yes, altogether.

1207. And is all your hope and the grace and mercy of God

1208. to preserve you unto his heavenly kingdom?

1209. Wesley says, yes, I have no hope but in him.

1210. To which Simeon concluded, then, sir, with your leave,

1211. I will put up my dagger again.

1212. For this is all my Calvinism.

1213. This is my election, my justification by faith, my final perseverance.

1214. It is in substance all that I hold and as I hold it.

1215. And therefore, if you please,

1216. instead of searching out terms and phrases to be a ground of contention between us,

1217. we will cordially unite in those things wherein we agree.

1218. To which Wesley responded, to this I add nothing.

1219. And that was their great debate that everyone had pressed them to.

1220. To see that really, both of them were Bible-believing men.

1221. And they had been led astray in their framing of their argument.

1222. And Simeon brought it together in such a beautiful way.

  1223. Do you believe?

  1224. Yes.

  1225. Do you believe?

  1226. Yes.

  1227. How about this?

  1228. Nope.

1229. And they all, and they realized, really?

1230. When it all came down to it,

1231. they were right there on the same page together.

1232. Now, these doctrines are important.

1233. They should be talked about.

  1234. They should be taught.

1235. But you have to recognize that most of the people that you encounter,

1236. those of us in this room that may not fully embrace the doctrine of election,

1237. we have so much more in common than those things that we have apart.

  1238. You know that?

1239. That we're a pretty conservative denomination being Southern Baptists.

1240. We're not debating things like the inerrancy of Scripture.

  1241. That's a blessing to us.

1242. It's good that we're debating things that we can debate with Scripture.

1243. That ultimately, we're all walking on a tightrope

1244. between the sovereignty of God and the responsibility of man.

1245. If I'm going to err, if our church is going to err,

1246. we're going to tend to err off the sovereignty of God's side.

1247. So, I usually balance like this.

1248. If I'm going to fall, it's going to be to the sovereignty of God's side of things.

1249. I'm going to neglect the teaching that we are, in fact, responsible for our actions.

1250. If others are going to err, many of our Georgia Baptist pastors,

1251. it's going to be to the other side.

1252. And they're going to neglect teaching that God is, in fact, in control.

  1253. You are to act.

1254. You are to work out your salvation with fear and trembling

1255. because it's God at work in you to accomplish His goodwill.

  1256. They'll neglect that side.

1257. Why is there so much contention around this?

  1258. I honestly don't know.

1259. But I can tell you that one thing I see as a possibility

1260. is that I get held on the tightrope

1261. by those who don't embrace this doctrine in the way that I do.

1262. Those men keep me from neglecting the teaching

1263. that we are, in fact, responsible,

1264. even though God is fully in control.

1265. So, let's look at the Scriptures together.

1266. I want to remind you, before we do that,

1267. that Paul's discussion of this doctrine

1268. as it relates to the Gentiles and to Israel

1269. ends in chapter 11, beginning in verse 33.

  1270. He says,

1271. Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom of knowledge of God!

1272. How unsearchable are His judgments

1273. and how inscrutable His ways!

1274. For who has known the mind of the Lord

1275. or who has been His counselor

1276. or who has given a gift to Him

1277. that He might be repaid?

1278. For from Him and through Him and to Him

  1279. are all things.

1280. To Him be glory forever.

  1281. Amen.

1282. This is a great doxology.

1283. And let's keep in mind that that's where He heads.

1284. In His mind, as He's having a proper understanding of this

1285. and He's pinning it down for us,

1286. that's where He ends up.

1287. He starts in the beginning of verse 9

1288. with a lament over Israel,

1289. His brethren according to the flesh,

1290. those that He has a dear, dear heart for,

  1291. His nation.

1292. But He ends in His understanding

  1293. by praising God

1294. that He can't fully grasp

1295. the height of God's wisdom and knowledge.

  1296. So let's recall that.

  1297. This week,

1298. my dear mother shared with me

  1299. Job 26.14.

  1300. Job says,

  1301. Behold,

1302. these are but the outskirts of His ways

1303. and how small a whisper do we hear of Him

1304. but the thunder of His power

  1305. who can understand.

  1306. Isn't that good?

1307. These are but the outskirts of His ways

1308. and how small a whisper do we hear of Him

1309. but the thunder of His power

  1310. who can understand.

  1311. We are to understand

1312. and know what God has given us

  1313. to understand and know

1314. and accept it by faith.

  1315. Someday,

1316. our minds are going to be

  1317. blown wide open.

1318. So let's let the Scriptures speak.

  1319. John 6.44.

  1320. Actually,

  1321. turn there with me.

1322. I want you to work with me through.

1323. We're going to go in order

  1324. through the New Testament.

1325. I have eight Scriptures for you.

1326. Which is not the extent of the Scriptures

1327. that speak to this topic.

  1328. John 6.44.

  1329. The words of Christ.

1330. No one can come to me

1331. unless the Father who sent me

  1332. draws him.

  1333. The Greek word draws

1334. is more powerful in the Greek

1335. than it is in English.

1336. It means literally to drag off.

1337. The picture is of us

  1338. clinging to sin.

1339. Have you ever seen a child

  1340. throw a tantrum?

1341. They don't want to go out the door

1342. and you've seen that parent

1343. that rather than just like

1344. spanking them and dealing with it

  1345. plays the game

1346. and drags them across the floor

1347. and they're like clawing on the carpet.

1348. That's the picture of this word.

1349. That is the way that the Father

  1350. draws us to Christ.

  1351. We don't love him.

  1352. We love sin.

1353. That is our natural inclination

  1354. before we are brought

  1355. to life in Christ.

1356. No one can come to me

1357. unless the Father who sent me

  1358. draws him.

  1359. In other Greek literature

  1360. that term is used

1361. for the bringing of water up

  1362. from a well.

  1363. How does that happen?

  1364. Does the water willingly

1365. climb up the side of the well?

  1366. Never.

  1367. Right?

  1368. Water is fully subjected

1369. to the law of gravity.

  1370. Right?

  1371. That term there used

1372. draw as a physical forcing

  1373. of something

  1374. to come to Christ.

  1375. John 15, 16.

  1376. Jesus says

  1377. and I don't know how

1378. you can get more clear than this

  1379. but Jesus says

1380. you did not choose me

  1381. but I chose you.

  1382. Do I have to

  1383. give commentary to that?

  1384. I didn't write this guys.

  1385. I don't have some special version.

  1386. Yours might read

  1387. slightly different

1388. but it says the same thing.

  1389. Jesus says

1390. you did not choose me

  1391. but I chose you.

  1392. Acts

  1393. 13, 48.

  1394. Paul's in Antioch.

  1395. And he preaches

  1396. a beautiful sermon.

  1397. I would encourage you

1398. to go through the book of Acts

1399. and just read the sermons.

  1400. The times when

  1401. Paul and Stephen,

  1402. Peter are before people

1403. and they're preaching the gospel.

1404. And at the end of all that

1405. it says in verse 48,

  1406. chapter 13,

1407. as many as were appointed

  1408. to eternal life

  1409. believed.

1410. Can we get around that language?

1411. Those who were in this presence

  1412. who heard the preaching

  1413. of the gospel,

  1414. the word of God

  1415. went forth

  1416. and it accomplished

  1417. what?

  1418. Exactly

  1419. what it was intended

  1420. to accomplish.

1421. As many as were appointed

  1422. to eternal life

  1423. believed.

  1424. Ephesians,

    Ephesians 1:3–6

  1425. chapter 1,

  1426. verses 3 through 6.

1427. Paul writes to the Ephesian

  1428. believers,

  1429. blessed be the God

1430. and Father of our Lord

  1431. Jesus Christ

  1432. who has blessed us

  1433. in Christ

  1434. with every spiritual blessing

  1435. in the heavenly places

1436. even as he chose us

  1437. in him

  1438. before the foundation

  1439. of the world

1440. that we should be holy

  1441. and blameless

  1442. before him.

1443. In love he predestined us

1444. for adoption as a son

  1445. through Jesus Christ

  1446. according to the purpose

  1447. of his will

  1448. to the praise

  1449. of his glorious grace

1450. with which he has blessed us

  1451. in the beloved.

  1452. I'm already here

1453. so we're just going to do it.

  1454. It wasn't my plan.

  1455. About 2, 8, and 9.

  1456. Ephesians 2, 8, and 9.

1457. For by grace you have been saved

  1458. through faith

1459. and this is not your own doing.

  1460. Referring to the faith,

  1461. you'll hear arguments otherwise.

  1462. Through faith

1463. and this is not your own doing.

1464. It is the gift of God

1465. not as a result of works

1466. so that no one may boast.

  1467. All praise and honor

  1468. belongs to the one

  1469. who saves us.

  1470. 1 Thessalonians 1, 4, and 5.

1471. You can always turn right,

  1472. I promise.

  1473. I double checked.

  1474. 1 Thessalonians 1, 4, and 5.

  1475. For we know,

  1476. brothers loved by God,

1477. that he has chosen you

1478. because our gospel came to you

  1479. not only in word

  1480. but also in power

1481. and in the Holy Spirit

  1482. and with full conviction.

1483. Paul writes to the Thessalonian believers,

  1484. brothers, we know

1485. that you're brothers loved by God

1486. and that he's chosen you.

  1487. Why?

  1488. Because the gospel came

1489. with the power of God

  1490. not just in word

  1491. but with the Spirit

  1492. and with full conviction.

  1493. These people's lives

  1494. had been changed.

  1495. And Paul witnesses this

  1496. in Thessalonian believers

1497. and what does he say?

  1498. We know,

  1499. brothers loved by God,

1500. that he has chosen you.

  1501. It wouldn't have happened

  1502. otherwise.

  1503. 2 Timothy 1, 9.

  1504. We're almost there.

  1505. He saved us

  1506. and called us

  1507. to a holy calling

1508. not because of our works

1509. but because of his own purpose

  1510. and grace

1511. which he gave us in Christ

  1512. before the ages began.

  1513. 1 Peter 1, 9.

  1514. Peter calls us,

1515. you don't have to worry about this one,

  1516. Peter calls us

  1517. a chosen race.

  1518. Revelation 13, 8

1519. speaks of what will happen

  1520. to those

  1521. whose names

  1522. have not been written

  1523. before the foundation

  1524. of the world

1525. in the book of life

  1526. of the Lamb

  1527. who was slain.

  1528. Again,

  1529. in chapter 17, verse 8.

1530. Speaks of the eternal destruction,

1531. the praise of the beast

  1532. that will happen

  1533. to those whose names

  1534. were not written

1535. in the book of life

  1536. before the foundation

  1537. of the world.

  1538. So,

  1539. many,

  1540. I have heard argue

  1541. that, yeah,

  1542. Peter,

  1543. or Paul,

1544. seems to be a bit

  1545. Calvinistic.

  1546. He speaks a lot

  1547. of this doctrine

  1548. of election.

  1549. But what about Jesus?

  1550. You can find

  1551. his words in red.

1552. That's what God will say.

  1553. Right?

  1554. We've got here

  1555. Jesus Christ.

  1556. We've got a record

  1557. of what's happening

  1558. in Acts.

  1559. We've got Paul writing

  1560. to a number

  1561. of the churches.

  1562. We have Peter.

  1563. We have John

  1564. who wrote the book

  1565. of Revelation.

  1566. You can't

  1567. embrace the doctrine

  1568. of election,

  1569. not understand it

  1570. necessarily,

  1571. but say,

  1572. the Bible teaches this.

  1573. Then you really

  1574. should at Matthew

  1575. tear it out,

  1576. throw it away.

  1577. And you know,

  1578. actually,

1579. all of the New Testament

  1580. is in great way

  1581. commentary

  1582. of the Old Testament.

  1583. So why don't you

  1584. just go ahead

  1585. and take the entire

  1586. thing and toss it?

  1587. It doesn't mean

  1588. you have to be

  1589. comfortable with it.

  1590. Again,

  1591. you don't have to

  1592. fully grasp

  1593. how it works out

  1594. in daily living.

  1595. the fact that

  1596. God is sovereign

  1597. and completely

  1598. in control

  1599. over all things

  1600. and yet I experience

  1601. day-to-day choices.

  1602. Every day,

  1603. I experience that.

  1604. That's what I feel

  1605. to be true.

  1606. How do those things

  1607. interplay?

  1608. How is it that

  1609. I'm held fully

  1610. responsible for all

  1611. of my actions

  1612. yet God is

  1613. totally in control?

  1614. I don't know.

  1615. I don't know.

1616. I would like to be

  1617. the wisest guy

  1618. and be able to

1619. just lay it all out

  1620. for you.

  1621. Just have you

  1622. completely be able

  1623. to wrap your mind

  1624. around it.

  1625. Convince you

  1626. with my reason

1627. that this is the case.

  1628. I can't.

  1629. I can't do it.

  1630. There's some gaps

  1631. in there.

  1632. But again,

  1633. rather than writing

  1634. my own

  1635. salvation plan

  1636. and then having

  1637. to hop around

  1638. in the scriptures

  1639. piecemeal together

  1640. little things

  1641. that I like

  1642. that support

  1643. my opinion

  1644. of things,

  1645. stand over God

  1646. and judge Him,

  1647. have Him play

  1648. my game

  1649. my way,

  1650. I would much

  1651. rather

  1652. be humble

  1653. and a bit

  1654. confused.

  1655. Put myself

  1656. as the creation

  1657. trying to understand

  1658. how it is

  1659. that God's

  1660. working out

  1661. His glorious

  1662. plan of salvation

  1663. in this earth

  1664. and why

  1665. I am any part

  1666. of it

  1667. at all.

  1668. I'll tell you,

  1669. you hang out

  1670. with us much,

1671. you're going to hear us

  1672. say,

  1673. we do not

  1674. serve God's grace.

1675. We fail to be grace.

  1676. We did.

  1677. We are

  1678. humble recipients

  1679. of God's work

  1680. in our lives.

  1681. So,

  1682. you ask the question,

  1683. why does

  1684. God's inspired word

  1685. make us privy

  1686. to God's

  1687. elective purpose?

  1688. Why?

  1689. What purpose

  1690. does it serve?

  1691. If it seems

  1692. that it serves

  1693. more harm

  1694. than good,

  1695. it seems

  1696. that this division

  1697. and these issues

  1698. are rooted

  1699. in this type

  1700. of teaching,

  1701. why?

  1702. It causes

  1703. confusion.

  1704. Why?

  1705. Why did

  1706. God do this?

  1707. How is it

  1708. practical?

  1709. Have you ever

  1710. heard the term

  1711. practical theology?

  1712. I despise it.

  1713. High theologians

  1714. talk about

  1715. practical theology.

  1716. All theology

  1717. is practical.

  1718. The study of God

  1719. has reality

  1720. for our lives

  1721. every single day.

  1722. So,

  1723. never buy the lie

  1724. that there are

  1725. some things

1726. that are just to know

  1727. and there are

  1728. some things

  1729. that you know

1730. so that you can do.

  1731. We know

  1732. so that we can

  1733. do,

  1734. think properly,

  1735. deal with emotions

  1736. properly.

  1737. So,

  1738. how is this

  1739. then

  1740. practical

  1741. for us?

  1742. And I have

  1743. three things

  1744. for you

  1745. and this is

  1746. going to

  1747. wrap us

  1748. to an end.

  1749. Three things

  1750. that the

  1751. doctrine of election

  1752. accomplishes

  1753. and was intended

  1754. to accomplish.

  1755. Firstly,

  1756. is to serve

  1757. as a comfort

  1758. to our souls.

  1759. It's where

  1760. we started

  1761. in Romans

    Romans 8:28

  1762. chapter 8,

  1763. verse 28.

  1764. I think you guys

  1765. all know,

  1766. 828,

  1767. and we know

  1768. that for those

  1769. who love God,

  1770. all things work

  1771. together for good

  1772. for those who

  1773. are called

  1774. according to

  1775. his purpose.

  1776. And then he

  1777. goes on

  1778. into his

  1779. explanation.

  1780. For those

  1781. he before

  1782. knew,

  1783. he also

  1784. predestined

  1785. to be

  1786. conformed

  1787. to the

  1788. image of

  1789. his son.

  1790. Because this

  1791. life is going

  1792. to be

  1793. difficult.

  1794. We are

  1795. going to

  1796. suffer.

  1797. Can you

  1798. imagine how

  1799. precious

  1800. the doctrine of

  1801. election would

  1802. have been

  1803. to first

  1804. century Jews?

  1805. Those who

  1806. were paraded

  1807. in Rome

  1808. into the

  1809. Colosseum

  1810. and fed

  1811. the lions.

  1812. Those who

  1813. were put on

  1814. stakes and

  1815. lit on fire

  1816. to light

  1817. Nero's

  1818. garden parties.

  1819. Those today

  1820. who when they

  1821. accept Christ,

  1822. they lose all

  1823. ties to their

  1824. family.

  1825. They may not

  1826. be able to

  1827. go to

  1828. university.

  1829. They may be

  1830. thrown in

  1831. prison.

  1832. They may be

  1833. killed.

  1834. Can you

  1835. imagine how

  1836. precious this

  1837. doctrine would

  1838. be to them?

  1839. But we're

  1840. all so

  1841. comfortable.

  1842. Right?

  1843. We don't

  1844. suffer.

  1845. We sit on

  1846. our couches

  1847. and we read

  1848. our Bibles

  1849. and say,

  1850. no, that's

  1851. not my

  1852. God.

  1853. It is

  1854. your God

  1855. and it's

  1856. for you

  1857. because you

  1858. begin to

  1859. live for

  1860. Christ.

  1861. You will

  1862. suffer.

  1863. You will

  1864. be persecuted.

  1865. Even in

  1866. this nation,

  1867. we begin to

  1868. put ourselves

  1869. out there

  1870. for him.

  1871. People are

  1872. not going

  1873. to like

  1874. us.

  1875. beyond that,

  1876. we suffer

  1877. physically.

  1878. I have

  1879. health issues.

  1880. That's part

  1881. of the

  1882. suffering

  1883. that's

  1884. included

  1885. in this.

  1886. And praise

  1887. God, I

  1888. know that

  1889. I am

  1890. his in

  1891. all the

  1892. things I'm

  1893. experiencing.

  1894. Everything

  1895. that goes

  1896. on in

  1897. my life,

  1898. internally,

  1899. externally,

  1900. are all

  1901. for my

  1902. good.

  1903. Further,

  1904. I am

  1905. fairly

  1906. wretched.

  1907. I sin

  1908. still.

  1909. I've been

  1910. delivered from

  1911. it and yet

  1912. I enslave

  1913. myself to

  1914. it.

  1915. Praise

  1916. God that

  1917. he's in

  1918. control of

  1919. my salvation.

  1920. That I

  1921. can't do

  1922. anything to

  1923. reject that.

  1924. I have

  1925. been bought.

  1926. I am

  1927. in him.

  1928. He holds

  1929. me firmly

  1930. in his

  1931. hand.

  1932. Nothing can

  1933. pluck me

  1934. out of

  1935. his hand,

  1936. even

  1937. myself.

  1938. John 10,

  1939. 27-30,

  1940. Jesus says,

  1941. My sheep

  1942. hear my

  1943. voice and

  1944. I know

  1945. them and

  1946. they follow

  1947. me.

  1948. I give

  1949. them eternal

  1950. life and

  1951. they will

  1952. never perish.

  1953. No one

  1954. will snatch

  1955. them out

  1956. of my

  1957. hand.

  1958. My

  1959. father who

  1960. has given

  1961. them to

  1962. me is

  1963. greater than

  1964. all and

  1965. no one is

  1966. able to

  1967. snatch them

  1968. out of

  1969. the father's

  1970. hand.

  1971. I and

  1972. the father

  1973. are one.

  1974. The doctrine

  1975. of election

  1976. does that.

  1977. It serves

  1978. as a comfort

  1979. to our

  1980. souls.

  1981. Secondly,

  1982. it causes

  1983. us to

  1984. praise God.

  1985. Rightly

  1986. understood,

  1987. it causes

  1988. us to

  1989. praise God.

  1990. Malachi 1,

  1991. 2,

  1992. and 3.

  1993. I told

  1994. you we

  1995. would talk

  1996. at least

  1997. in brief

  1998. about that

  1999. phrase at

  2000. the end

  2001. of verse

  2002. 13,

  2003. Jacob I

  2004. loved,

  2005. but Esau

  2006. I hated.

  2007. Let's

  2008. understand the

  2009. context.

  2010. Malachi 1,

  2011. 2,

  2012. and 3,

  2013. God says,

  2014. I have

  2015. loved you,

  2016. says the

  2017. Lord,

  2018. but you

  2019. say,

  2020. speaking to

  2021. Israel,

  2022. how have

  2023. you loved

  2024. us?

  2025. God says

  2026. to Israel,

  2027. I have

  2028. loved you.

  2029. And their

  2030. response is,

  2031. how have

  2032. you loved

  2033. us?

  2034. And he

  2035. said,

  2036. is not

  2037. Esau

  2038. Jacob's

  2039. brother?

  2040. By the

  2041. flesh,

  2042. descendants

  2043. together,

  2044. declares the

  2045. Lord,

  2046. yet I have

  2047. loved

  2048. Jacob,

  2049. but Esau

  2050. I have

  2051. hated.

  2052. I have

  2053. laid waste

  2054. his hill

  2055. country and

  2056. left his

  2057. heritage to

  2058. jackals of

  2059. the desert.

  2060. I have

  2061. loved you

  2062. by bestowing

  2063. blessing on

  2064. you who

  2065. did not

  2066. deserve it.

  2067. That's the

  2068. context.

  2069. to the

  2070. praise of

  2071. his

  2072. glorious

  2073. grace.

  2074. Ephesians

  2075. 1,

  2076. 5,

  2077. and 6

  2078. says,

  2079. he

  2080. predestined

  2081. us for

  2082. adoption

  2083. of sons

  2084. through

  2085. Jesus

  2086. Christ

  2087. according

  2088. to the

  2089. purpose

  2090. of his

  2091. will.

  2092. We read

  2093. this

  2094. earlier,

  2095. to the

  2096. praise

  2097. of his

  2098. glorious

  2099. grace,

  2100. with which

  2101. he has

  2102. blessed

  2103. us in

  2104. the

  2105. beloved.

  2106. To

  2107. cause

  2108. us

  2109. to

  2110. praise

  2111. him.

  2112. We

  2113. were in

  2114. 1 Peter

  2115. 1,

  2116. 9.

  2117. I've

  2118. got to

  2119. go back

  2120. there.

  2121. Because I

  2122. didn't write

  2123. it down.

  2124. 1 Peter

  2125. 1,

  2126. 9.

  2127. Peter

  2128. says,

  2129. you are

  2130. a chosen

  2131. race,

  2132. a royal

  2133. priesthood.

  2134. I'm

  2135. almost

  2136. there.

  2137. No,

  2138. not 1

  2139. Peter

  2140. 1,

  2141. 9.

  2142. 2

  2143. Peter

  2144. 1,

  2145. 9.

  2146. Nope.

  2147. 2,

  2148. 9.

  2149. I'm

  2150. sorry.

  2151. But you

  2152. are a

  2153. chosen

  2154. race,

  2155. a royal

  2156. priesthood,

  2157. a holy

  2158. nation,

  2159. a people

  2160. for his

  2161. own

  2162. possession.

  2163. Why?

  2164. That you

  2165. may proclaim

  2166. the excellences

  2167. of him who

  2168. called you out

  2169. of darkness

  2170. into his

  2171. marvelous

  2172. light.

  2173. That we

  2174. might be

  2175. objects of

  2176. mercy so

  2177. that we

  2178. will make

  2179. God's

  2180. merciful

  2181. attributes

  2182. known to

  2183. the world.

  2184. Which brings

  2185. me to the

  2186. third.

  2187. Practical

  2188. reality,

  2189. the doctrine

  2190. of election.

  2191. The doctrine

  2192. of election

  2193. should encourage

  2194. us to

  2195. evangelism.

  2196. You hear me?

  2197. The doctrine

  2198. of election

  2199. should encourage

  2200. us to

  2201. evangelism.

  2202. the doctrine.

  2203. I'm

  2204. going to

  2205. do what

  2206. he wants

  2207. to do.

  2208. Why

  2209. should I

  2210. have any

  2211. part in

  2212. it?

  2213. It's a

  2214. good

  2215. objection.

  2216. I can

  2217. see the

  2218. logic in

  2219. that.

  2220. But in

  2221. fact,

  2222. it should

  2223. encourage

  2224. us to

  2225. it.

  2226. 2 Timothy

  2227. 2.

  2228. 10.

  2229. Listen

  2230. carefully to

  2231. these words

  2232. of Paul.

  2233. He says,

  2234. after talking

  2235. about some

  2236. suffering he's

  2237. endured,

  2238. he says,

  2239. I endure

  2240. everything

  2241. for the

  2242. sake of

  2243. the elect,

  2244. that they

  2245. also may

  2246. obtain salvation

  2247. that is in

  2248. Christ Jesus

  2249. with eternal

  2250. glory.

  2251. So Paul

  2252. doesn't

  2253. neglect his

  2254. responsibility in

  2255. carrying the

  2256. gospel,

  2257. but Paul

  2258. recognizes that

  2259. he's the

  2260. means to

  2261. the end.

  2262. That he's

  2263. the tool

  2264. being used

  2265. to accomplish

  2266. God's

  2267. purpose.

  2268. So he

  2269. endures the

  2270. suffering so

  2271. that he

  2272. can be

  2273. involved in

  2274. that process.

  2275. Why does

  2276. God not just

  2277. snap his

  2278. fingers,

  2279. save those

  2280. he's going

  2281. to save,

  2282. leave the

  2283. others behind,

  2284. done deal?

  2285. Because he

  2286. loves his

  2287. people.

  2288. And he

  2289. wants us

  2290. to proclaim

  2291. his name

  2292. because it's

  2293. good for

  2294. us.

  2295. It is a

  2296. great joy

  2297. to join

  2298. God in

  2299. his eternal

  2300. purpose.

  2301. Let me

  2302. speak from

  2303. history.

  2304. Many,

  2305. many great

  2306. men of

  2307. missions and

  2308. evangelism,

  2309. I would

  2310. argue some

  2311. of the

  2312. greatest men

  2313. of missions

  2314. and evangelism

  2315. held to

  2316. the doctrine

  2317. of election

  2318. not loosely,

  2319. they held

  2320. to it

  2321. tightly.

  2322. Let me

  2323. run through

  2324. a few

  2325. of them

  2326. for you.

  2327. Martin

  2328. Luther

  2329. catalyzed

  2330. the Protestant

  2331. Reformation,

  2332. so loved

  2333. the word

  2334. of God

  2335. that he

  2336. by himself

  2337. stood

  2338. against

  2339. the Catholic

  2340. Church,

  2341. loved the

  2342. doctrine of

  2343. election.

  2344. William Tyndale

  2345. translated the

  2346. first English

  2347. Bible in

  2348. its entirety

  2349. from the

  2350. original Hebrew

  2351. and Greek.

  2352. There was a

  2353. man that

  2354. wanted to

  2355. see the

  2356. gospel advance

  2357. through his

  2358. scriptures.

  2359. John Knox

  2360. led the

  2361. Protestant

  2362. Reformation

  2363. in Scotland.

  2364. George

  2365. Whitfield

  2366. is the

  2367. best-known

  2368. preacher of

  2369. the British

  2370. Great

  2371. Awakening.

  2372. Charles

  2373. Simeon,

  2374. we talked

  2375. about him

  2376. a bit

  2377. ago,

  2378. leader of

  2379. the

  2380. evangelical

  2381. movement

  2382. of the

  2383. Church of

  2384. England.

  2385. William

  2386. Carey was

  2387. a Baptist

  2388. missionary to

  2389. India,

  2390. and he

  2391. founded the

  2392. Baptist

  2393. Missionary

  2394. Society.

  2395. Adoniram

  2396. Judson,

  2397. the first

  2398. international

  2399. missionary sent

  2400. from North

  2401. America.

  2402. Good fact

  2403. for you who

  2404. want to be

  2405. international

  2406. missionaries.

  2407. He's a

  2408. Baptist

  2409. missionary,

  2410. and he

  2411. went and

  2412. served in

  2413. Burma for

  2414. 40 years.

  2415. John G.

  2416. Patton,

  2417. one of my

  2418. favorites,

  2419. from Scotland

  2420. also,

  2421. went and

  2422. served in

  2423. the New

  2424. Hebrides,

  2425. a group of

  2426. islands now

  2427. called

  2428. Vanuatu,

  2429. cannibals.

  2430. He lived

  2431. for three

  2432. years on

  2433. an island

  2434. and saw

  2435. one convert,

  2436. and the

  2437. entire time

  2438. he was in

  2439. danger of

  2440. being killed

  2441. and eaten.

  2442. He left

  2443. and came

  2444. back and

  2445. saw the

  2446. whole island

  2447. converted to

  2448. Christ.

  2449. When he

  2450. first got

  2451. there,

  2452. his wife

  2453. of two

  2454. years and

  2455. his newborn

  2456. son both

  2457. died of

  2458. a disease,

  2459. and he

  2460. stayed and

  2461. he served,

  2462. held dearly

  2463. the

  2464. doctrine of

  2465. election.

  2466. William

  2467. Wilberforce,

  2468. familiar with

  2469. him?

  2470. He gets

  2471. talked about

  2472. a lot here

  2473. lately.

  2474. He's the

  2475. British

  2476. politician that

  2477. spent his

  2478. life ending

  2479. the English

  2480. slave trade.

  2481. Untold

  2482. thousands of

  2483. people owe

  2484. their life to

  2485. William Wilberforce,

  2486. and he endured

  2487. the lifelong

  2488. struggle to

  2489. end that

  2490. slave trade

  2491. because he

  2492. knew God

  2493. was in

  2494. control.

  2495. John

  2496. Newton,

  2497. he was a

  2498. slave trader,

  2499. became an

  2500. Anglican

  2501. preacher.

  2502. He wrote

  2503. Amazing Grace.

  2504. You know

  2505. those precious

  2506. words that we

  2507. all sing with

  2508. such gusto,

  2509. written by a

  2510. guy that

  2511. believed in

  2512. the doctrine

  2513. of election,

  2514. when he

  2515. says Amazing

  2516. Grace?

  2517. That's what

  2518. he's talking

  2519. about.

  2520. Jonathan

  2521. Edwards,

  2522. was heralded

  2523. as the

  2524. greatest

  2525. theological

  2526. mind that

  2527. North America

  2528. has ever

  2529. produced,

  2530. and was a

  2531. key figure

  2532. in the

  2533. North American

  2534. Great Awakening.

  2535. a great

  2536. evangelist.

  2537. Charles Spurgeon,

  2538. the British

  2539. Baptist

  2540. preacher,

  2541. it's estimated

  2542. that he

  2543. preached to

  2544. 10 million

  2545. plus people

  2546. in his

  2547. lifetime.

  2548. 10 million

  2549. people.

  2550. And often

  2551. throughout his

  2552. life, he

  2553. preached 10

  2554. sermons a

  2555. week.

  2556. I barely

  2557. feel like I

  2558. get through

  2559. one every

  2560. week.

  2561. He preached

  2562. 10 sermons

  2563. a week.

  2564. A man who

  2565. loved the

  2566. doctrine of

  2567. election.

  2568. And then

  2569. I've got to

  2570. tell you about

  2571. my favorite.

  2572. I'm going to

  2573. read you a

  2574. quote from

  2575. him.

  2576. George

  2577. Mueller.

  2578. If you get

  2579. to know me

  2580. much at

  2581. all, you

  2582. know that

  2583. George

  2584. Mueller is

  2585. one of my

  2586. heroes.

  2587. In the

  2588. earlier stages

  2589. of his

  2590. life, he

  2591. pastored a

  2592. church and

  2593. he had an

  2594. orphanage.

  2595. And throughout

  2596. his life,

  2597. was directly

  2598. and indirectly

  2599. involved with

  2600. caring for

  2601. 10,000 or

  2602. more orphans

  2603. that came

  2604. through his

  2605. care.

  2606. He traveled

  2607. later in his

  2608. life over

  2609. 200,000

  2610. miles preaching

  2611. and sharing

  2612. the gospel.

  2613. I guess the

  2614. orphanage was

  2615. running efficiently

  2616. and he took

  2617. off.

  2618. He traveled

  2619. around the

  2620. states.

  2621. 200,000

  2622. miles.

  2623. He started a

  2624. missionary society

  2625. that supported

  2626. 187 international

  2627. missionaries.

  2628. Hudson Taylor

  2629. being one of

  2630. them.

  2631. You guys are

  2632. missionary

  2633. historians.

  2634. Hudson Taylor

  2635. who worked in

  2636. China for many,

  2637. many years.

  2638. And when I say

  2639. supported, it

  2640. doesn't mean

  2641. that he wrote

  2642. a little bit

  2643. of money each

  2644. month and

  2645. it was part

  2646. of their

  2647. support.

  2648. His missionary

  2649. society fully

  2650. funded 187

  2651. missionaries

  2652. around the

  2653. world.

  2654. A phenomenal,

  2655. phenomenal

  2656. activist for

  2657. the kingdom

  2658. of God.

  2659. And I want

  2660. you to listen

  2661. to what he

  2662. wrote.

  2663. Many will

  2664. say in his

  2665. autobiography he

  2666. didn't write

  2667. an autobiography,

  2668. he journaled.

  2669. But he wrote

  2670. this.

  2671. He said,

  2672. Before this

  2673. period I

  2674. had been

  2675. much opposed

  2676. to the

  2677. doctrines of

  2678. election,

  2679. particular

  2680. redemption and

  2681. final preserving

  2682. grace, so

  2683. much so that

  2684. I called

  2685. election a

  2686. devilish

  2687. doctrine.

  2688. Some of

  2689. you sit

  2690. there that

  2691. way this

  2692. morning.

  2693. I called

  2694. election a

  2695. devilish

  2696. doctrine.

  2697. Before I

  2698. read on,

  2699. let me tell

  2700. you just

  2701. an interesting

  2702. side story

  2703. about him.

  2704. In a

  2705. gathering of

  2706. believers

  2707. sharing the

  2708. Bible, he

  2709. firmly supported

  2710. what is called

  2711. paedo-baptism,

  2712. the baptism of

  2713. infants, and

  2714. rejected credo-baptism,

  2715. which is

  2716. believer's baptism,

  2717. what we hold

  2718. to here.

  2719. Firmly supported

  2720. the one, rejected

  2721. the other, and

  2722. afterwards an

  2723. old lady, elderly

  2724. lady came up to

  2725. him and said,

  2726. Mr.

  2727. Mueller, I

  2728. would suggest

  2729. to you that

  2730. you not draw

  2731. opinions until

  2732. you have read

  2733. the scripture

  2734. concerning them

  2735. and walked

  2736. away.

  2737. and he was

  2738. so convicted,

  2739. really realized

  2740. that he

  2741. hadn't really

  2742. addressed the

  2743. scriptures on

  2744. the matter,

  2745. that he went

  2746. and he read

  2747. the whole New

  2748. Testament through

  2749. with that in

  2750. mind, baptism.

  2751. What does the

  2752. Bible teach about

  2753. baptism?

  2754. At the end of

  2755. that was

  2756. converted.

  2757. He then

  2758. believed in

  2759. credo-baptism,

  2760. in believer's

  2761. baptism.

  2762. Then he made

  2763. it a habit in

  2764. his life to

  2765. do that with

  2766. anything he

  2767. didn't have an

  2768. answer to.

  2769. Isn't that

  2770. phenomenal?

  2771. When it was an

  2772. issue that would

  2773. have been

  2774. addressed primarily

  2775. in New

  2776. Testament, he

  2777. would just read

  2778. the New

  2779. Testament, but

  2780. it was an

  2781. issue that was

  2782. addressed throughout

  2783. the scriptures,

  2784. he would read

  2785. the entire

  2786. Bible with

  2787. that topic in

  2788. mind to gain

  2789. an understanding

  2790. of it.

  2791. So here we

  2792. go.

  2793. I went to

  2794. the Word,

  2795. reading the

  2796. New Testament

  2797. from the

  2798. beginning with

  2799. a particular

  2800. reference to

  2801. these truths.

  2802. To my great

  2803. astonishment, I

  2804. found that the

  2805. passages which

  2806. speak decidedly

  2807. for election and

  2808. preserving grace

  2809. were about four

  2810. times as many as

  2811. those which speak

  2812. apparently against

  2813. these truths.

  2814. And even those

  2815. few, shortly

  2816. after, when I

  2817. had examined and

  2818. understood them,

  2819. served to confirm

  2820. me in the above

  2821. doctrines.

  2822. In the course of

  2823. time, it pleased

  2824. God then to show

  2825. to me the doctrines

2826. of grace in a way

2827. in which I had not

  2828. seen them before.

  2829. At first, I hated

  2830. them.

  2831. If this were true,

  2832. I could do nothing

  2833. at all in the

  2834. conversion of

  2835. sinners, as all

  2836. would depend on

  2837. God and on the

  2838. work of His

  2839. Spirit.

  2840. But when it

  2841. pleased God to

  2842. reveal these truths

  2843. to me, and my

  2844. heart was brought

  2845. to such a state

  2846. that I could say,

  2847. I am not only

  2848. content simply to

  2849. be a hammer, an

2850. axe, or a saw in

  2851. God's hands, but I

  2852. shall count it an

  2853. honor to be taken

  2854. up and used by

  2855. Him in any way.

  2856. And if sinners

  2857. are converted

  2858. through my

  2859. instrumentality, for

  2860. my inmost soul, I

  2861. will give Him all

  2862. the glory.

  2863. Catch what he

  2864. said.

  2865. When he came to

  2866. the place where

  2867. he could say,

  2868. not only am I

  2869. content to be a

  2870. tool in God's

  2871. hands, but I'm

  2872. also content with

  2873. whatever the outcome

  2874. of that may be.

  2875. When sinners are

  2876. converted, I will

  2877. give Him all the

  2878. glory.

  2879. That's what he

  2880. just said.

  2881. Then he says,

  2882. when he arrived at

  2883. that place, the

  2884. Lord gave me to

  2885. see fruit.

2886. The Lord gave me to

  2887. see fruit in

  2888. abundance.

  2889. Sinners were

  2890. converted by

  2891. scores.

  2892. And ever since,

2893. God has used me in

  2894. one way or other

  2895. in his service.

  2896. How precious the

  2897. doctrine of

  2898. election.

  2899. We're not going

  2900. to arrive at all

  2901. the answers in the

  2902. next couple of

  2903. weeks.

  2904. There are some

  2905. answers.

  2906. It is worth

  2907. wrestling with.

2908. But at the end of

2909. it all, you have to

  2910. decide if you're

  2911. going to be humble

  2912. and submit yourself

  2913. to the scriptures,

  2914. to the God who

  2915. wrote them, or if

  2916. you're going to be

  2917. arrogant, and

  2918. stand in judgment

  2919. of them.

  2920. And I know I'm

  2921. saying harsh things

  2922. to you, but it's

  2923. true.

  2924. The rest of chapter

  2925. nine.

  2926. Chapter nine has

  2927. within it twelve

  2928. Old Testament

  2929. quotes.

  2930. Twelve Old

  2931. Testament quotes.

  2932. Nine of them are

  2933. first person God

  2934. quotes.

  2935. So God wrote all

  2936. scripture inspired.

  2937. Nine of them,

  2938. though, are first

  2939. person record of

  2940. what God has to

  2941. say.

  2942. And what I

  2943. believe Paul is

  2944. saying to us when

  2945. we ask questions

  2946. that the scriptures

  2947. don't answer is,

  2948. be quiet.

  2949. Who are you,

  2950. oh man?

  2951. Who do you think

  2952. you are?

  2953. That's what he's

  2954. saying in our

  2955. language.

  2956. Who do you think

  2957. you are to ask

  2958. such questions of

  2959. God?

  2960. Look what he said

  2961. here, and here,

  2962. and here, and

  2963. here.

  2964. That is the

  2965. reality.

  2966. I pray that as a

  2967. church, and you

  2968. as individuals,

  2969. will embrace the

  2970. doctrines of

  2971. scripture, including

  2972. the doctrine of

  2973. election, and see

  2974. how it serves your

  2975. good.

  2976. you'll see that

  2977. it compels you to

  2978. have a soul

  2979. satisfied in

  2980. Christ.

  2981. It helps you

  2982. bear up under

  2983. suffering.

  2984. I pray you give

  2985. great praise to

  2986. God for his work,

  2987. because you can't

  2988. take any credit

  2989. for it.

  2990. And I pray that

  2991. it moves you to

  2992. evangelism, that

  2993. you become radical,

  2994. because you know

  2995. that the outcome

  2996. is in God's

  2997. hands.

  2998. I started

  2999. hunting this

  3000. year.

  3001. I bought my

  3002. first camouflage

  3003. hat this past

  3004. week, which is

  3005. really kind of

  3006. odd.

  3007. But Wes took

  3008. me rifle hunting,

  3009. we saw nothing,

  3010. last year,

  3011. twice, and I

  3012. decided I'm going

  3013. to be a bow

  3014. hunter.

  3015. So I've been

  3016. working on that.

  3017. And this

  3018. Saturday, both

  3019. season opened

  3020. up, and so I

  3021. went out and

  3022. killed my hopes

  3023. and nothing

  3024. else.

  3025. It was kind

  3026. of a boring

  3027. time, but

  3028. there's no

  3029. guarantee at

  3030. all that I'm

  3031. going to shoot

  3032. a deer this

  3033. year.

  3034. None, whatsoever.

  3035. Some things I

  3036. can do to

  3037. prepare for it,

  3038. there's a bit

  3039. of a science

  3040. to it, but

  3041. there's zero,

  3042. zero guarantee.

  3043. And I've

  3044. already said,

  3045. let's see how

  3046. long I stick

  3047. with this, because

  3048. if this just

  3049. keeps happening

  3050. and I go sit

  3051. in the woods

  3052. beginning at

  3053. six o'clock in

  3054. the morning for

  3055. three hours and

  3056. nothing happens,

  3057. I may not be a

  3058. hunter.

  3059. It may not be

  3060. my hobby of

  3061. choice.

  3062. But what if

  3063. God had said

  3064. to me, oh

  3065. no, you're

  3066. going to kill

  3067. stuff.

  3068. You do it the

  3069. way I told you

  3070. to do it, I'm

  3071. in control.

  3072. They're coming

  3073. your way, I

  3074. promise.

  3075. They're coming

  3076. by.

  3077. I intend for

  3078. you to kill

  3079. deer.

  3080. I'd go every

  3081. time.

  3082. Not that every

  3083. time I go, there

  3084. would be a deer,

  3085. but you know

  3086. what I would do?

  3087. I'd say, well,

  3088. God did not

  3089. intend for me to

  3090. kill a deer

  3091. this day.

  3092. But next time

  3093. I go, maybe

  3094. that day I

  3095. will.

  3096. the doctrine

  3097. of election.

  3098. Get out and

  3099. share your

  3100. faith.

  3101. Be the means

  3102. for the end.

  3103. He does it

  3104. for you.

  3105. He wants you

  3106. to be involved.

  3107. Sit on your

  3108. hands if you

  3109. want to and

  3110. deny yourself the

  3111. joy of advancing

  3112. the kingdom.

  3113. He'll use

  3114. someone else

  3115. because he

  3116. will accomplish

  3117. his eternal

  3118. purposes.

  3119. Let's pray

  3120. together.

  3121. Let's pray

  3122. together.

  3123. Let's pray

  3124. together.

  3125. Let's pray

  3126. together.

  3127. Let's pray

  3128. together.

  3129. Let's pray

  3130. together.

  3131. Let's pray

  3132. together.

  3133. Let's pray

  3134. together.

  3135. Let's pray

  3136. together.

  3137. Let's pray

  3138. together.

  3139. Let's pray

  3140. together.

  3141. Let's pray

  3142. !

  3143. Let's pray

  3144. !

  3145. Let's pray
