  1. I'm going to continue Philippians tonight.

  2. It's an interesting passage we're looking at tonight, and there's a lot to be said about it.

  3. It's good to see everybody. I know it's been probably a busy day on campus, and the fact that you're here just shows that you really want to learn the Word of God and really apply it to your life.

  4. And I pray that it does that tonight.

  5. I hope that you leave walking away feeling challenged and encouraged and pushed a little bit.

  6. So, an introduction. I'll give you a brief introduction to this, but I think the focal point of what we're going to talk about is in verse 12 of what we just read.

  7. I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the Gospel.

  8. And Paul is explaining this in such a way to where he's like, my imprisonment or my time here that I'm in Rome, don't feel bad about this.

  9. Because it's worked out for the greater good or the advancement of the Gospel.

  10. God has used it that way.

  11. And no matter what circumstance you find in, we're to be proclaiming Christ to a lost world.

  12. And no matter where you are in your life, not looking to do something later or when things work out a little better for you.

  13. It's like wherever you are is where God has you right now, and He wants you to be proclaiming the Gospel.

  14. And a focus, a really interesting thing we're going to look at in this first verse is where He says, has really served to advance the Gospel.

  15. That word advance is a really, really awesome word.

  16. It's a military word.

  17. It means like how, like when an army was on the march, people would have to go in front of the army and like clear the way.

  18. They'd have to cut down trees, cross rivers, and do all these things so that the army could move forward.

  19. It's the kind of context that that's kind of used in.

  20. Paul is like saying that that's happening with the Gospel.

  21. And, you know, I mean, I guess one of the best illustrations you could give, at least on earthly standards, I guess, I could talk forever about this.

  22. I'm not going to.

  23. Those of you who know me know I like stuff like this, but I'm resisting talking about the whole night about this.

  24. But imagine that you and I lived back in 200s BC, and I told you, okay, I want you to organize an army from several different nations,

  25. most of which nations don't really like each other too much.

  26. They all speak different languages.

  27. I want you to build an army of these people, train them,

  28. and I want you to march over 1,000 miles over rugged wilderness across rivers.

  29. And if you deal with, like, the native peoples there, you're just going to have to fight them and defeat them and keep moving on to the goal.

  30. And then eventually you're going to have to cross the Alps, cross those mountains in a really cold part of the year.

  31. And once you do that, after you've kept everything together, I want you to go down towards Rome,

  32. and I want you to, like, defeat or annihilate 10 Roman legions numbering around 70,000 men.

  33. You think you can do that?

  34. 1,000 miles, like, going over all this rugged wilderness, and that actually happened.

  35. A general that a lot of people know about today, he's studied and admired over tons of different military campuses.

  36. Hannibal actually did this.

  37. He united people from many different nations and brought them together for a common cause, which was to fight against Rome.

  38. And Rome had devastated his country, which was Carthage.

  39. It was in North Africa at the time, modern-day Morocco area.

  40. And they had, you know, his father had fought against them.

  41. It was just a hatred to be, well, he just brought up to be just hating Rome.

  42. And so he was out to destroy Rome, and he did that.

  43. He gathered around 38,000 infantry by 8,000 cavalry, and he began this march.

  44. And about, he crossed over the land, he crossed over the Alps, and, like, eventually, he also had 37 war elephants.

  45. I forgot to answer, bring that up.

  46. That's pretty crazy.

  47. But he crossed over many different rivers, and one river, it was a huge river, he had to cross his army.

  48. On the other side of it, there was a large number of Romans he had to fight, just on the other side of the river.

  49. He was able to do that.

  50. He crossed them over in, like, rafts.

  51. When they landed, they just came around and, like, defeated the Romans.

  52. And he went through the Alps in the northern part of Italy.

  53. He crossed the Alps in, like, freezing weather.

  54. He cut through the mountains, pretty amazing, and made his own roads.

  55. And then he came down, and he faced a Roman army, about 70,000 or so.

  56. And he, it was known as the greatest defeat in Roman history.

  57. Around 70,000 men were killed at Cannae.

  58. Pretty crazy victory for Hannibal.

  59. And so, no matter what the obstacle was, like, he was just, didn't care.

  60. He was going to face it and overcome.

  61. And how crazy this must be for us to even hear about something like that.

  62. But it's really garbage compared to what God has done since the beginning of creation to bring man, you know,

  63. back into a relationship to himself and sending Christ to reconcile us to God.

  64. And God has committed, like we talked about this last week, to his saving purpose no matter what it takes.

  65. He will accomplish what he set out to do.

  66. He'll begin the good work that he began, and he will finish it.

  67. And so there's no power.

  68. I want you to turn.

  69. There's a few places to turn tonight.

  70. Isaiah 40.

  71. Hold your hand in Philippians, but turn to Isaiah 40.

  72. But no power in this world or in the spiritual realm will stop God's advancement of the gospel.

  73. He promises that he will achieve it.

  74. One day he will have a people from every nation, tribe, and tongue worshiping Jesus.

  75. And Isaiah 40, go to verse 3 and see if this passage sounds familiar to something in the New Testament.

  76. This is 7,000 years before Christ.

  77. And it says,

  78. This is what John the Baptist quoted.

  79. He's like, I am that voice crying in the wilderness, and the Messiah is here, and he's going to move forward.

  80. His kingdom will not have an end, and God will have his glory on this earth.

  81. So Paul understands this, that God is committed to his saving cause,

  82. and that no matter where he finds himself, even while he's being imprisoned in Rome,

  83. he knows that it's for the advancement of the gospel.

  84. So, we're going to look at four different things that Paul brings up here,

  85. as far as what does the gospel do to us, to those around us,

  86. and that's kind of what we're going to focus on.

  87. But number one is, sharing the gospel affects your soul.

  88. Like as a child of God, as a believer, as a follower of Christ,

  89. sharing the gospel is good for your soul.

  90. It affects your soul.

  91. So, he recognized that the power of the gospel was being released by his imprisonment.

  92. And he knew that God had sovereignly brought him there every step of the way.

  93. And he knew why he was there was for God to advance this cause.

  94. And he didn't complain.

  95. He didn't say,

  96. I wish I could just kind of get out of the situation and go do something else and get out on the streets.

  97. But he understood that, like Joseph in Genesis, that what was being meant for evil, God was going to use for good.

  98. He was aware of that thinking of God and how God carried out these plans.

  99. Flip to 2 Timothy 2.

  100. I think after this one, I just have three other places for you to look for the night.

  101. But 2 Timothy 2, I want to show you what he says here.

  102. So, one of the biggest services that clothes nations to the gospel and people that are hostile towards the gospel,

  103. one of the greatest things they actually do to serve the gospel and advance the gospel is like try to persecute it and throw people in prison.

  104. And it always ends up backfiring on whatever cause they're trying to carry out.

  105. But 2 Timothy 2, go to verse 8.

  106. Paul says,

  107. Timothy, probably this is,

  108. you should know 2 Timothy is probably the last letter Paul wrote,

  109. so, his last word, so to say.

  110. He says,

  111. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David,

  112. as preached in my gospel,

  113. for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal,

  114. but the word of God is not bound.

  115. Therefore, I endure everything for the sake of the elect,

  116. that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, the eternal glory.

  117. So, he's rejoicing.

  118. And that's, he's stuck in this place.

  119. He can't get out.

  120. And in this go-around,

  121. this was not written in the same context as Philippians.

  122. He was in a dungeon cell.

  123. He was waiting for death.

  124. He wasn't waiting on trial like in this previous time.

  125. This was after Paul's fourth missionary journey when he wrote 2 Timothy.

  126. And this is after the second one when he wrote Philippians.

  127. But he understands that though I'm here and I can't really physically go anywhere,

  128. like God's power is not limited to my physical dimension.

  129. Like God's word is not bound.

  130. God's word is going to continue to move forward and change lives.

  131. And I'm willing to endure anything, he says,

  132. anything for the sake of those whom God is going to bring salvation to.

  133. I'm willing to endure hardship and suffering and even death if it means that they can be reached with the gospel.

  134. Very powerful words.

  135. Because I want that attitude.

  136. I don't always have it.

  137. And, but I want whatever it takes.

  138. You know, if it means my life,

  139. I want it to mean that for the sake of those who will be saved.

  140. So, I want you to think about this.

  141. How sharing the gospel affects you.

  142. You might not think about that that much.

  143. You always think of like sharing the gospel is just for the people on the outside.

  144. But what we love the most is what we glorify the most, is what we praise the most.

  145. So, what we talk about, what we do with our time, the activities we engage in, what we do with our money,

  146. it reveals like what you love.

  147. So, you can say that you love Christ, but if your life shows something totally different,

  148. you might want to recheck that.

  149. But it's like, have you ever wondered like why that's so?

  150. Why do we bring praise to the things that we love?

  151. And before C.S. Lewis was a Christian, he was like reading through the Bible,

  152. and he was kind of curious, like he was reading through the Psalms,

  153. and he was like, why does it always talk about praise God?

  154. Like, what's all this praise about?

  155. And while he was writing about that, this is something he said,

  156. I have noticed, excuse me, I had never noticed that all enjoyment spontaneously overflows into praise.

  157. The world rings with praise.

  158. Lovers praising their mistress.

  159. Readers praising their favorite poet.

  160. Walkers praising the countryside.

  161. And players praising their favorite game.

  162. I think, this is really cool, he says,

  163. I think we delight to praise that we enjoy,

  164. because the praise not merely expresses,

  165. but completes the enjoyment in it.

  166. It is the consummation of enjoyment.

  167. So, like we can't help but talk about what we're joyful about,

  168. and what we love, and so it comes out of us.

  169. And the gospel is not meant to be something that is hoarded by us.

  170. It's not designed that way.

  171. Christ didn't give you joy and save you so that you could hold it inside.

  172. And, often, he'll allow you to be very, very miserable,

  173. and you'll wonder why.

  174. That could be why, a lot of the times.

  175. A great analogy or picture I've heard this metaphor

  176. is like how the Dead Sea in Israel,

  177. there's a lot of water that flows into the Dead Sea from different places.

  178. And, there's a lot going into it,

  179. but there's no water coming out of the Dead Sea.

  180. And so, what happens is, like, everything in there dies.

  181. That's why it's called that.

  182. And that's what joy will be like in us

  183. if God is pouring himself into us

  184. and giving us much of himself,

  185. and he's increasing who he is in us,

  186. and we refuse to let it come out onto other people.

  187. And, we're meant to have such a joy and such a delight in God

  188. that it overflows onto the people that are around us,

  189. and to love him with our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  190. And, the result of that is loving those around us.

  191. And, so, if we have Christ in us, he can't be held in.

  192. You have to talk about him.

  193. It's like this thing you just, like you're going to blow up if you don't.

  194. And, you know, so it does good to our souls

  195. to, like, express the joy that we have.

  196. You ever been so excited about something?

  197. I mean, just think about something you just got super stoked about,

  198. and then, like, you just couldn't talk about it.

  199. I mean, you're just like, like this thing that you just can't.

  200. You feel like you're about to explode, like I said.

  201. And, that's what enjoyment of God will do.

  202. It has to come out.

  203. And, Jeremiah said, if I don't speak in his name,

  204. there's like a fire that's shut up in me,

  205. and I have to let it out.

  206. So, first of all, sharing the gospel affects your soul.

  207. Secondly, the gospel affects the souls of the lost.

  208. And, this is probably the obvious one,

  209. but I want you to think about this.

  210. Let's go back to Philippians, sorry,

  211. and go to verse 13, and we'll see this.

  212. So, he's talking about,

  213. my imprisonment is turned out for the advancement of the gospel,

  214. so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard,

  215. and to all the rest, that my imprisonment is for Christ.

  216. So, Paul is rejoicing,

  217. because, while he's being in prison,

  218. he's becoming well-known throughout the whole city of Rome.

  219. And, the imperial guard is,

  220. another word is the praetorian guard.

  221. We've mentioned them in the first night here.

  222. You can go back and listen to that message if you want to know more context.

  223. But, these are the guys, like I said,

  224. were in gladiator.

  225. They're wearing, like, the purple,

  226. and they're the dudes that are just jocking everybody up.

  227. But, they were the elite guard of the emperor.

  228. They guarded the Palatine Hill,

  229. where the palace was,

  230. and important places in Rome that are like the secret police.

  231. And, more than likely,

  232. Paul's case would have been heard by the commander of the praetorian guard.

  233. And, so, he's around these guys a lot.

  234. And, so, what's really cool is, you know,

  235. he could be saying, like,

  236. I wish that I could just get out of this position.

  237. And, you know, these guys come,

  238. and they change the guards all the time with him, probably.

  239. And, he's just kind of sitting there,

  240. and, I mean, you know they've got to be talking about stuff.

  241. You know, like, Paul's sitting there with these guards.

  242. And, so, I mean, what are you doing here?

  243. Why is this?

  244. Why are you here in Rome?

  245. This kind of seems ridiculous.

  246. And, he would just, well,

  247. and just kind of go into it with them.

  248. And, that just began to affect the whole guard.

  249. And, eventually, it would go into Caesar's own home,

  250. to the palace on the Palatine Hill.

  251. And, so, even the people in Caesar's household,

  252. which he mentions later in the letter,

  253. are knowing Christ and becoming believers.

  254. And, they probably tried to keep it on the down low,

  255. because that's, at the time,

  256. Nero was the head honcho of the Palatine Hill.

  257. And, so, he understood, like,

  258. this is why I'm here.

  259. And, like, my imprisonment here

  260. is affecting some of the elite of Rome.

  261. You know, these men that hold these positions

  262. as civil magistrates and guards,

  263. this is turning out for the advancement of the Gospel.

  264. And, so, our hearts,

  265. if you really know Christ,

  266. your heart should break for the lost.

  267. You have no hope.

  268. You have, they're thirsting for the water

  269. that only Christ can give them.

  270. They're seeking pleasure in everything but their Creator.

  271. They're living as masters of their own lives

  272. and seeking to determine their own destiny.

  273. And, I bet that a lot of them

  274. are actually pretty filled with fear.

  275. I know I would be.

  276. I can remember times that I was in my life.

  277. Like, who's piloting my ship right now?

  278. I hope it's not me,

  279. because I don't know the crap I'm doing.

  280. And, I really,

  281. it brings a lot of fear to us all to know that.

  282. And, they're longing to hear

  283. that they have a,

  284. something far greater to live for than themselves.

  285. And, I hope they can be found in Christ.

  286. And, they're waiting to hear that news.

  287. So, we should be able to go

  288. through whatever extremes necessary

  289. to reach those people.

  290. We're going to touch back on this at the end,

  291. so I don't want to wear it out now.

  292. But, in Jude 1, 22, it says,

  293. Have mercy on those who doubt.

  294. Save others by snatching them out of the fire.

  295. To others, show mercy with fear.

  296. And, if we're to rescue those people,

  297. like, be God's instrument to go to them

  298. and be the means by which He saves these people.

  299. So, second, sharing the gospel affects the lost souls.

  300. We're going to come back to that.

  301. Number three, sharing the gospel

  302. affects fellow believers.

  303. So, look at verse 14.

  304. And, most of the brothers,

  305. having become confident in the Lord

  306. by my imprisonment,

  307. are much more bold to speak the word

  308. without fear.

  309. So, the believers around that are in Rome

  310. and the Philippians who are reading this letter

  311. are becoming more and more bold

  312. to speak the gospel

  313. because they know, like,

  314. what Christ is,

  315. or what Paul is enduring there.

  316. His imprisonment is throwing them up

  317. to go and, like,

  318. to share more.

  319. And, I know that one of the biggest ways,

  320. I mean, I don't know how you do it,

  321. but one of the biggest ways

  322. that I get really fired up

  323. to go and share the gospel with people

  324. is, like, just for someone to even tell me,

  325. like, a story of the gospel advancing.

  326. You know, I've already mentioned this before,

  327. I believe,

  328. but I really loved living with John Overton

  329. and Josh Middleton

  330. because we would come together most nights

  331. and there would always be some kind of story

  332. we would just share,

  333. like the gospel going forward on campus

  334. or elsewhere,

  335. and it would just get us so pumped up

  336. to go out the next day

  337. and just find somebody

  338. just to go after some guy

  339. just to love and serve

  340. and give the truth to.

  341. And, or when I hear about stuff

  342. that's going on abroad in the U.S.

  343. or overseas,

  344. it gets me really excited.

  345. I met a guy

  346. while I was in Belfast

  347. a few summers ago

  348. in northern Ireland.

  349. There's a conflict going on there.

  350. I'm not going to get into that necessarily,

  351. but Irish Catholics

  352. against, like,

  353. the British, Scottish Protestants

  354. that are in the north,

  355. and this struggle has been going on

  356. for hundreds and hundreds of years,

  357. and they hate each other

  358. with a passion.

  359. It's not,

  360. they're brought up to, like,

  361. hate the other people,

  362. and I met a guy

  363. at a camp

  364. who,

  365. that was sharing

  366. that,

  367. I actually met this guy

  368. and it was pretty,

  369. pretty awesome,

  370. but he,

  371. he was a leader

  372. of one of the Protestant

  373. militia groups

  374. for a long time,

  375. the Ulster Defense Army,

  376. and he was a pretty jacked dude.

  377. He had tattoos

  378. all over his arm.

  379. He had scars

  380. all over his body

  381. from, like, knife fights

  382. and he had been shot

  383. in a few places

  384. and I know that he had definitely

  385. probably killed many men

  386. just,

  387. just standing there

  388. and he was telling

  389. these teenagers

  390. at this camp,

  391. like,

  392. don't fall into that mess,

  393. you know,

  394. it's not worth it.

  395. I gave my life

  396. for this cause

  397. and,

  398. and I was going down

  399. a long road

  400. to perishing,

  401. you know,

  402. and so please,

  403. like,

  404. Jesus is worth it

  405. and I asked him

  406. how he came

  407. to know Christ

  408. and he said

  409. that there was

  410. a believer

  411. just in that community

  412. that began,

  413. like,

  414. with some fear

  415. but went

  416. and just got

  417. into that group,

  418. just started hanging out

  419. with,

  420. like,

  421. being around those guys,

  422. not joining them

  423. but just being around them

  424. and,

  425. like,

  426. was pretty fearful,

  427. I mean,

  428. these guys could really

  429. jack me up

  430. or kill me

  431. just by me

  432. hanging out with them

  433. and,

  434. I mean,

  435. he kind of befriended

  436. this guy

  437. and just started

  438. sharing some life

  439. with him

  440. and this guy

  441. started planting

  442. seeds of truth

  443. and eventually

  444. this guy

  445. was born again

  446. and now he's,

  447. like,

  448. renounced all that

  449. and just going out

  450. to spread the gospel

  451. to these other guys

  452. there in Belfast

  453. and that just got so,

  454. when I think about that,

  455. I get so excited

  456. to see the gospel

  457. moving forward

  458. and,

  459. so,

  460. it does good to us,

  461. fellow believers,

  462. when you hear about

  463. the thing you love

  464. being spread

  465. to other people,

  466. it just excites you

  467. and gives your zeal

  468. a huge push

  469. and the fourth thing,

  470. then we're going to come back

  471. to some other things,

  472. but the fourth thing is

  473. sharing the gospel

  474. affects,

  475. I mean,

  476. I have to explain this word,

  477. it affects opponents

  478. and look at verse 15,

  479. verse 15,

  480. chapter 1,

  481. some indeed preach Christ

  482. from envy and rivalry,

  483. but others from good will,

  484. the latter do it out of love,

  485. knowing that I am put here

  486. for the defense of the gospel,

  487. the former proclaim Christ

  488. out of rivalry,

  489. not sincerely,

  490. but thinking to afflict my,

  491. afflict me in my imprisonment,

  492. what then,

  493. only that in every way,

  494. whether in pretense or truth,

  495. Christ is proclaimed,

  496. and in that I rejoice,

  497. so there is some stuff

  498. that you probably just,

  499. I want you to know about here,

  500. but Jesus warned

  501. that eventually

  502. the greatest,

  503. some of the greatest opponents

  504. to the gospel

  505. would be like from within

  506. the church itself,

  507. you would always just think

  508. from the outside of the church,

  509. but Jesus warned

  510. that many of the great battles

  511. the church had to fight

  512. would come from within

  513. its own ranks,

  514. and the danger would be

  515. from within

  516. as well as from without,

  517. and Paul understood that as well,

  518. and so he had witnessed

  519. hostility from different religious factions,

  520. the Jews or the pagans,

  521. you know,

  522. of other countries,

  523. and he understood that,

  524. but you would expect hostility

  525. to come from like the lost world around you,

  526. darkness doesn't like the light

  527. kind of thing,

  528. but it really does hurt

  529. to have a fellow believer

  530. slander you

  531. and attack you

  532. and falsely accuse you

  533. for something that's not true at all

  534. for different reasons,

  535. and so this word,

  536. I want you to look at that text

  537. where it says out of envy or strife,

  538. it means really to like

  539. to deprive someone

  540. of something that's rightfully theirs,

  541. to try to steal away

  542. because you're jealous,

  543. you want to steal away

  544. like the prominence somebody has

  545. or the crowds they're gathering

  546. or the popularity

  547. that they're gaining,

  548. you want that

  549. and you don't want them to get it,

  550. and that's kind of like

  551. what was going on,

  552. so they weren't doing it

  553. out of a spirit of love at all,

  554. they were doing it

  555. out of a divisive spirit,

  556. and the problem

  557. was not necessarily

  558. with their theology,

  559. but they were teaching

  560. the real gospel,

  561. the problem was in their

  562. their desires

  563. and their motives

  564. for why they were doing it,

  565. and there was,

  566. in the Old Testament,

  567. there was,

  568. false prophets

  569. were often called seers

  570. by the real prophets,

  571. they would come around

  572. to town to town

  573. and they would say,

  574. they would do like

  575. a little show,

  576. they would put on something,

  577. and they would say

  578. certain things

  579. that helped the people

  580. give them money

  581. for being a prophet,

  582. but they really had no power,

  583. and they weren't really

  584. from God,

  585. and so these seers

  586. were speaking the gospel,

  587. they were doing it

  588. because they were

  589. jealous of Paul,

  590. and they hated

  591. like the influence

  592. he had,

  593. and the authority

  594. he had been given,

  595. to the point where

  596. they're like,

  597. we wanted to gather,

  598. you know,

  599. these people that are

  600. listening to you,

  601. we want to steal them away,

  602. and like,

  603. have them a part

  604. of our group,

  605. so to say,

  606. and so they sought

  607. to dismantle

  608. his reputation

  609. by accusing him

  610. of a lot of false things

  611. that he didn't do,

  612. so Paul recognized this,

  613. but he also recognized

  614. that other people

  615. are doing this

  616. out of right motive,

  617. out of love,

  618. out of a righteous spirit

  619. that they have,

  620. and so he knows

  621. that both of these

  622. are going on

  623. at the same time,

  624. and Paul also knew,

  625. like,

  626. he would think,

  627. well,

  628. that's not cool,

  629. like,

  630. these people that are

  631. doing that,

  632. then why are they

  633. having success

  634. if they're doing this

  635. with the wrong motives?

  636. Well,

  637. Paul rejoices

  638. because he just understands,

  639. I don't care,

  640. this is not a competition,

  641. as long as Christ

  642. is being proclaimed clearly

  643. and doctrinally soundly,

  644. I don't really care,

  645. because Paul knew

  646. something tremendous

  647. about God

  648. that I try to think

  649. about a lot,

  650. but it really failed to,

  651. but God is not limited

  652. to circumstances,

  653. he will work,

  654. he will work

  655. even evil people

  656. and the things

  657. they do

  658. for his purpose,

  659. he'll work

  660. in spite of people,

  661. he'll work

  662. around all kind

  663. of situations

  664. to achieve

  665. what he wants,

  666. a great example

  667. of this

  668. is in Isaiah,

  669. years before

  670. this man lived,

  671. Isaiah names

  672. King Cyrus

  673. of Persia

  674. as the man

  675. who would eventually

  676. come

  677. and punish

  678. the Babylonians

  679. for their evil

  680. and at the same time

  681. restore Judah

  682. back to their homeland,

  683. so he's telling this

  684. years and years

  685. and years

  686. way before

  687. Cyrus was ever born

  688. and like Isaiah

  689. names him several times,

  690. like God is saying

  691. to him,

  692. Cyrus,

  693. you are my servant,

  694. I will do this

  695. through you,

  696. and then he says

  697. in there twice,

  698. though you do not

  699. know me,

  700. though you do not

  701. know me,

  702. I'm going to use you

  703. for my purpose,

  704. it's very,

  705. very crazy,

  706. so Paul understood,

  707. let these guys

  708. have their day,

  709. you know,

  710. like this is not

  711. going to bother me

  712. at all,

  713. they can preach

  714. all they want,

  715. but it's not going

  716. to do their souls

  717. any good,

  718. so as long as

  719. Christ is being

  720. proclaimed,

  721. it really doesn't

  722. bother me,

  723. I'm going to rejoice,

  724. and so I know

  725. that two camps

  726. possibly could be

  727. in here,

  728. those who aren't

  729. sharing our faith

  730. and some that are,

  731. but if you are,

  732. I want you to ask

  733. yourself the question,

  734. why am I doing it,

  735. why am I proclaiming

  736. Christ,

  737. check your motives

  738. for why you are

  739. doing those things,

  740. I'm sorry,

  741. I'm having a hard

  742. time breathing

  743. today,

  744. I've been trying

  745. to get my airways

  746. going,

  747. but,

  748. so I want to

  749. just ask a few

  750. things,

  751. why are you

  752. proclaiming the

  753. gospel,

  754. if you are,

  755. is it because

  756. people will look

  757. at you and be

  758. like,

  759. wow,

  760. he's really

  761. serious about

  762. his faith,

  763. he seems to

  764. be gathering a

  765. lot of people

  766. to himself,

  767. he's got a

  768. really big

  769. evangelistic

  770. Bible study

  771. going on,

  772. or all these

  773. things,

  774. I know people,

  775. I've met

  776. people,

  777. and like,

  778. you know,

  779. it'll be a

  780. girl or a

  781. guy who

  782. is getting

  783. all serious

  784. about evangelism

  785. because they're

  786. trying to

  787. impress somebody

  788. of the opposite

  789. sex about how

  790. serious they are

  791. about their

  792. faith,

  793. and like,

  794. just things like

  795. that,

  796. and ministries

  797. and churches

  798. that will also

  799. like,

  800. content with each

  801. other,

  802. like,

  803. because they

  804. want bigger

  805. numbers than

  806. the people down

  807. the street,

  808. and they want

  809. the most things

  810. going on,

  811. and so they'll

  812. slanderously

  813. sow things into

  814. people's hearts

  815. about those

  816. people so they

  817. will leave and

  818. come there,

  819. so examine

  820. why you do

  821. those things,

  822. you know,

  823. and I understand

  824. that your motives

  825. can sometimes

  826. change,

  827. you can have

  828. a pure desire

  829. to really make

  830. Christ known,

  831. and then you

  832. get caught up

  833. in like,

  834. yeah,

  835. I really want

  836. to be successful

  837. in this,

  838. so Jesus

  839. warned in

  840. Matthew 7,

  841. we don't have

  842. to turn there,

  843. but Matthew

  844. 7,

  845. 21,

  846. that a lot

  847. of people

  848. were going

  849. to come to

  850. him one day

  851. and say that,

  852. Jesus,

  853. we did all

  854. this stuff

  855. for you,

  856. we cast

  857. out demons

  858. in your name,

  859. we proclaim

  860. the gospel,

  861. so forth,

  862. and he's

  863. going to tell

  864. them,

  865. I never

  866. knew you,

  867. you know,

  868. you're doing

  869. that of your

  870. own accord,

  871. and you had

  872. your reward

  873. while you

  874. were there,

  875. I never

  876. knew you,

  877. and so,

  878. those are the

  879. four things,

  880. but what I

  881. mainly wanted

  882. to do is just

  883. focus on some

  884. application

  885. tonight,

  886. and I had

  887. a hard time

  888. really knowing

  889. how to talk

  890. about some

  891. of this,

  892. because I knew

  893. what I

  894. think needed

  895. to be said,

  896. but I

  897. didn't just

  898. want to jump

  899. over the

  900. passage,

  901. this is what

  902. the passage

  903. is about,

  904. and the essence

  905. of it,

  906. and how do

  907. we really

  908. bring this

  909. into our

  910. lives now,

  911. but the

  912. question is,

  913. you know,

  914. is the

  915. advancement of

  916. the gospel,

  917. or the progress

  918. of the gospel,

  919. one of the

  920. passions of

  921. your life,

  922. is it what

  923. you live for,

  924. is it what

  925. drives you,

  926. where does

  927. your energy

  928. go,

  929. is it to

  930. the advancement

  931. of the

  932. gospel,

  933. where do

  934. you,

  935. where is

  936. your reading

  937. and your

  938. thinking,

  939. and that

  940. kind of

  941. stuff,

  942. where does

  943. that go,

  944. is it for

  945. the advancement

  946. of the

  947. gospel,

  948. and because

  949. all those

  950. things are

  951. going to

  952. reveal where

  953. your heart

  954. is,

  955. and so

  956. we're going

  957. to look at

  958. just a few

  959. of these

  960. things,

  961. but what

  962. are some

  963. excuses that

  964. you might

  965. make up,

  966. and I've

  967. made these up

  968. myself in

  969. the past,

  970. what excuses

  971. do you make

  972. for not sharing

  973. the gospel,

  974. I'm going to

  975. look at some

  976. of these,

  977. but number

  978. one,

  979. one reason

  980. why we're

  981. not really

  982. interested in

  983. advancing the

  984. gospel is

  985. that our

  986. circumstances,

  987. we think

  988. that we're

  989. victims of

  990. our circumstances,

  991. if God

  992. would just

  993. work this

  994. out,

  995. if things

  996. weren't so

  997. busy right

  998. now,

  999. if I was

  1000. just in this

  1001. position,

  1002. or not that

  1003. position,

  1004. if I'm

  1005. stuck in

  1006. this place,

  1007. or if

  1008. this didn't

  1009. happen to

  1010. me,

  1011. then I

  1012. wouldn't

  1013. be quiet

  1014. about

  1015. Christ,

  1016. even like,

  1017. if God

  1018. would just

  1019. work out

  1020. for me to

  1021. go and

  1022. have this

  1023. awesome

  1024. ministry

  1025. position,

  1026. then I

  1027. would get

  1028. so serious

  1029. about sharing

  1030. the gospel,

  1031. or if

  1032. God would

  1033. just send

  1034. me to

  1035. this nation

  1036. and I

  1037. could go

  1038. do missions

  1039. in this

  1040. place,

  1041. I would

  1042. be so

  1043. serious

  1044. about sharing

  1045. my faith.

  1046. I want

  1047. you to know

  1048. those are

  1049. all lies,

  1050. there's nothing

  1051. justifiable,

  1052. in any

  1053. of that.

  1054. If God

  1055. puts you

  1056. in a

  1057. position,

  1058. He has

  1059. you

  1060. sovereignly

  1061. there,

  1062. right now,

  1063. like to

  1064. be faithful

  1065. where you

  1066. are right

  1067. now,

  1068. to be

  1069. sharing

  1070. where you

  1071. are right

  1072. now,

  1073. why would

  1074. you ever

  1075. think God

  1076. would move

  1077. you into a

  1078. different place

  1079. if you

  1080. weren't being

  1081. faithful with

  1082. where you

  1083. are?

  1084. And if

  1085. Christ is

  1086. the love

  1087. of your

  1088. life,

  1089. then you'll

  1090. talk about

  1091. Him.

  1092. You're going

  1093. to find

  1094. ways to

  1095. make this

  1096. happen,

  1097. and He'll

  1098. take precedence

  1099. over all

  1100. those things.

  1101. So,

  1102. if you're

  1103. not sharing

  1104. the gospel

  1105. tonight,

  1106. there's either

  1107. one or two

  1108. reasons.

  1109. One is,

  1110. your love

  1111. and your

  1112. zeal for

  1113. Christ has

  1114. really been

  1115. calmed down,

  1116. it's been

  1117. cooled off,

  1118. and you've

  1119. grown,

  1120. you belong

  1121. to Christ,

  1122. but you've

  1123. grown lukewarm.

  1124. And the

  1125. only other

  1126. option after

  1127. that is you

  1128. might not

  1129. know Christ,

  1130. and that's

  1131. why you

  1132. don't have

  1133. that passion.

  1134. And those

  1135. are the

  1136. two only

  1137. reasons for

  1138. why we

  1139. don't share

  1140. our faith.

  1141. And a

  1142. second reason

  1143. is,

  1144. if you're

  1145. at my

  1146. community

  1147. group last

  1148. night,

  1149. we actually

  1150. touched on

  1151. this briefly,

  1152. but I'm

  1153. afraid to

  1154. share my

  1155. faith.

  1156. I have

  1157. fear about

  1158. going out

  1159. and talking

  1160. to my

  1161. friends and

  1162. the people

  1163. that God

  1164. puts into

  1165. my life.

  1166. I'm afraid

  1167. of this.

  1168. And if

  1169. you look

  1170. really,

  1171. really hard,

  1172. there's

  1173. actually like

  1174. a hidden

  1175. idolatry in

  1176. your life,

  1177. and it's

  1178. not fear.

  1179. We don't

  1180. live in a

  1181. country,

  1182. at least

  1183. now we

  1184. don't,

  1185. that if

  1186. you speak

  1187. the name

  1188. of Christ,

  1189. you're not

  1190. going to

  1191. get thrown

  1192. in prison,

  1193. you're not

  1194. going to

  1195. get a

  1196. bullet

  1197. through your

  1198. head.

  1199. That's

  1200. probably not

  1201. going to

  1202. happen.

  1203. It can,

  1204. but probably

  1205. is not going

  1206. to happen.

  1207. If you're

  1208. not afraid

  1209. for your

  1210. life,

  1211. that might

  1212. be a little

  1213. different in

  1214. some of

  1215. these other

  1216. nations where

  1217. we have

  1218. brothers and

  1219. sisters that

  1220. are advancing

  1221. the gospel

  1222. in those

  1223. contexts.

  1224. But the

  1225. truth is

  1226. here,

  1227. you're not

  1228. fearful,

  1229. you're very

  1230. prideful.

  1231. You want

  1232. to be seen

  1233. as cool

  1234. and acceptable

  1235. and you

  1236. want people

  1237. to like

  1238. you.

  1239. And you're

  1240. not willing

  1241. to be

  1242. humiliated for

  1243. the sake of

  1244. their soul.

  1245. Whether they

  1246. turn against

  1247. you or don't

  1248. turn against

  1249. you,

  1250. you're not

  1251. willing to

  1252. kind of shed

  1253. that off

  1254. and come

  1255. to them

  1256. regardless.

  1257. So it's

  1258. a hidden

  1259. idolatry

  1260. of your

  1261. pride.

  1262. You want

  1263. to be

  1264. known and

  1265. loved and

  1266. respected by

  1267. those people

  1268. around you.

  1269. And you're

  1270. aware that

  1271. the gospel

  1272. can be

  1273. divisive.

  1274. Derek Webb

  1275. has a song

  1276. where he has

  1277. this one line

  1278. in the song,

  1279. the truth

  1280. is never

  1281. sexy,

  1282. so it's

  1283. never an

  1284. easy sale.

  1285. You can't

  1286. just dress up

  1287. the gospel

  1288. to make it

  1289. acceptable to

  1290. a lost

  1291. world.

  1292. Some people

  1293. are going

  1294. to hate

  1295. you because

  1296. of it.

  1297. I mean,

  1298. Jesus taught

  1299. these things.

  1300. It happened

  1301. to him.

  1302. He said,

  1303. if they

  1304. persecute me,

  1305. I promise

  1306. they'll

  1307. persecute you.

  1308. I'm the

  1309. spotless

  1310. lamb of

  1311. God and

  1312. they hate

  1313. me and

  1314. they're going

  1315. to crucify

  1316. me.

  1317. And so

  1318. we have

  1319. to,

  1320. we're not

  1321. afraid.

  1322. Stop using

  1323. that excuse.

  1324. It's really

  1325. something much

  1326. deeper.

  1327. Pray that God

  1328. just breaks

  1329. you and

  1330. just shows

  1331. you that

  1332. it's not

  1333. worth it.

  1334. Your friends,

  1335. you need to

  1336. be willing to

  1337. lose your

  1338. reputation if

  1339. necessary to

  1340. reach your

  1341. friends.

  1342. And the

  1343. question really

  1344. isn't,

  1345. should I

  1346. be, I

  1347. mean,

  1348. ever heard

  1349. anybody just

  1350. say, I'm

  1351. praying about

  1352. it.

  1353. That's the

  1354. really

  1355. Christianized

  1356. way of

  1357. like disguising

  1358. your fear a

  1359. lot of the

  1360. time or your

  1361. pride.

  1362. I'm praying

  1363. about it.

  1364. You know

  1365. what?

  1366. You don't

  1367. need to pray

  1368. about what

  1369. God's already

  1370. commanded you

  1371. to do.

  1372. He says,

  1373. go and

  1374. make

  1375. disciples.

  1376. He says,

  1377. go and

  1378. reach the

  1379. lost.

  1380. They need

  1381. me in

  1382. their lives.

  1383. But what you

  1384. do need to

  1385. pray about

  1386. is how to

  1387. go about

  1388. it, the

  1389. strength to

  1390. carry it

  1391. out, and

  1392. pray for

  1393. their soul

  1394. because you

  1395. know that

  1396. you have

  1397. no power

  1398. to change

  1399. them.

  1400. That's the

  1401. things you

  1402. pray about.

  1403. You don't

  1404. negotiate the

  1405. commands of

  1406. God in

  1407. prayer.

  1408. God's like,

  1409. make me

  1410. known.

  1411. Make me

  1412. known to

  1413. these people

  1414. and seek

  1415. me for

  1416. direction,

  1417. strength,

  1418. and wisdom

  1419. on how to

  1420. reach them.

  1421. So,

  1422. they're in

  1423. your lives

  1424. for a

  1425. reason.

  1426. God has

  1427. put them

  1428. there so

  1429. that you

  1430. would be

  1431. Christ in

  1432. that spot

  1433. to them.

  1434. And I

  1435. have another

  1436. reason.

  1437. well, I'll

  1438. make one

  1439. more comment

  1440. about that.

  1441. This kind

  1442. of came to

  1443. my mind.

  1444. I want to

  1445. have more

  1446. of a

  1447. discussion

  1448. with you

  1449. tonight.

  1450. But there's

  1451. something that

  1452. a lot of

  1453. ministries do,

  1454. a lot of

  1455. churches do

  1456. this, and

  1457. it's really

  1458. trendy today

  1459. for sure,

  1460. but this

  1461. idea of

  1462. friendship

  1463. evangelism.

  1464. You ever

  1465. heard of that

  1466. or something

  1467. like that?

  1468. I have to

  1469. be really

  1470. good friends

  1471. with this

  1472. person and

  1473. be around

  1474. them for

  1475. at least

  1476. six months.

  1477. I'm going

  1478. to say at

  1479. least six

  1480. months.

  1481. And then

  1482. maybe they'll

  1483. listen to me

  1484. if I share

  1485. the gospel

  1486. with them.

  1487. there's a lot

  1488. of flaws in

  1489. that.

  1490. But what I

  1491. don't want

  1492. you to hear

  1493. from me is

  1494. don't love

  1495. these people,

  1496. don't befriend

  1497. these people,

  1498. and don't serve

  1499. these people.

  1500. I'm saying

  1501. definitely do

  1502. that.

  1503. I'm only

  1504. saying that

  1505. you don't

  1506. love them

  1507. if you

  1508. don't do

  1509. that.

  1510. You need

  1511. to be a

  1512. part of

  1513. their life

  1514. and a

  1515. part of

  1516. their world

  1517. and find

  1518. ways to

  1519. show them

  1520. the love

  1521. of Christ

  1522. and love

  1523. them sacrificially.

  1524. Do things

  1525. for them.

  1526. Be a part

  1527. of their

  1528. life and be

  1529. in their

  1530. world.

  1531. Show them

  1532. that you

  1533. care.

  1534. That is

  1535. what good

  1536. works,

  1537. a lot of

  1538. the old

  1539. confessions

  1540. say,

  1541. good works

  1542. adorn the

  1543. gospel.

  1544. They make

  1545. beautiful the

  1546. gospel by how

  1547. we treat

  1548. people with

  1549. the love of

  1550. Christ that

  1551. he's shown

  1552. us.

  1553. So I'm

  1554. not saying

  1555. that.

  1556. I'm just

  1557. saying that

  1558. I think

  1559. that a lot

  1560. of people

  1561. use that

  1562. as a

  1563. disguise for

  1564. not sharing

  1565. the gospel.

  1566. I'm just

  1567. getting to

  1568. know him.

  1569. My bro,

  1570. you've been

  1571. getting to

  1572. know him

  1573. for five

  1574. months now

  1575. and you're

  1576. with him

  1577. every day.

  1578. What's the

  1579. deal?

  1580. And it's

  1581. wrong because

  1582. you're living

  1583. on presumption.

  1584. You're saying

  1585. that I know

  1586. that in six

  1587. months this

  1588. guy's going

  1589. to still be

  1590. around and

  1591. I'm still

  1592. going to be

  1593. around and

  1594. this is going

  1595. to work out.

  1596. You don't

  1597. know what

  1598. tomorrow holds.

  1599. You need to

  1600. live if it

  1601. is your last

  1602. day and

  1603. really seek

  1604. to love

  1605. these people

  1606. and give

  1607. them Christ

  1608. while you

  1609. have the

  1610. opportunity.

  1611. The gospel

  1612. has urgency

  1613. in it.

  1614. I mean it

  1615. does have

  1616. to weigh the

  1617. cost and

  1618. think about

  1619. what you're

  1620. doing but

  1621. it's not

  1622. like saying

  1623. I have

  1624. the ability

  1625. to put

  1626. this off

  1627. for months

  1628. and months

  1629. and months

  1630. while I

  1631. try to get

  1632. to know

  1633. this guy

  1634. so he'll

  1635. listen to

  1636. me.

  1637. God's

  1638. power is

  1639. greater than

  1640. that.

  1641. So I guess

  1642. my word is

  1643. just be

  1644. obedient.

  1645. If there's a

  1646. person in

  1647. your life

  1648. and you're

  1649. like I want

  1650. to show

  1651. Christ to

  1652. them I

  1653. don't know

  1654. how to go

  1655. about this

  1656. but I'm

  1657. going to do

  1658. it I don't

  1659. know how

  1660. yet.

  1661. Lord show

  1662. me.

  1663. Be obedient.

  1664. He may be

  1665. like just

  1666. be with

  1667. them right

  1668. now.

  1669. Just listen

  1670. to them

  1671. right now.

  1672. Just serve

  1673. them right

  1674. now.

  1675. When I'm

  1676. ready I'm

  1677. going to

  1678. tell you.

  1679. I'm going

  1680. to make

  1681. it clear.

  1682. This is

  1683. the time

  1684. you need

  1685. to speak.

  1686. Be

  1687. obedient.

  1688. And then

  1689. it could be

  1690. the other

  1691. way around.

  1692. I remember

  1693. going up in

  1694. the dorms

  1695. not this

  1696. past August

  1697. but last

  1698. August.

  1699. Up in

  1700. it was

  1701. Louis I

  1702. believe

  1703. yeah up

  1704. in Louis

  1705. and

  1706. and I

  1707. just barely

  1708. met this

  1709. guy.

  1710. And I

  1711. was just

  1712. talking with

  1713. him and

  1714. he liked

  1715. to just

  1716. invite me

  1717. in his

  1718. room.

  1719. I went

  1720. and was

  1721. just getting

  1722. to know

  1723. him and

  1724. he asked

  1725. me about

  1726. who I

  1727. was and

  1728. stuff and

  1729. I just

  1730. really felt

  1731. this strong

  1732. urge and

  1733. leave him

  1734. I'm just

  1735. going to

  1736. give him

  1737. everything

  1738. right now

  1739. and just

  1740. poured out

  1741. the gospel

  1742. to this

  1743. guy and

  1744. he was

  1745. just like

  1746. wow

  1747. never heard

  1748. that before

  1749. that's

  1750. amazing.

  1751. and wanted

  1752. to meet

  1753. up afterwards

  1754. like I

  1755. knew the

  1756. guy for

  1757. probably 15

  1758. minutes before

  1759. I started

  1760. pumping him

  1761. with the

  1762. gospel.

  1763. And that was

  1764. just the

  1765. leading of

  1766. the spirit

  1767. and the

  1768. power of

  1769. God.

  1770. God might

  1771. have said

  1772. just back

  1773. off of

  1774. this guy

  1775. right now

  1776. and just

  1777. hang out

  1778. with him

  1779. right now.

  1780. Just be

  1781. obedient to

  1782. what's going

  1783. on.

  1784. It's not

  1785. we want a

  1786. rule where

  1787. God says

  1788. share it

  1789. right now

  1790. or don't

  1791. share it

  1792. right now.

  1793. And that's

  1794. not what

  1795. God's going

  1796. to do.

  1797. He's about

  1798. working in

  1799. your heart

  1800. and changing

  1801. you as

  1802. he's working

  1803. in somebody

  1804. else's life

  1805. and growing

  1806. you in

  1807. relationship

  1808. to him.

  1809. So,

  1810. but don't

  1811. use friendship

  1812. evangelism as

  1813. like a disguise

  1814. to like not

  1815. share the

  1816. gospel.

  1817. I know a lot

  1818. of people

  1819. do that.

  1820. Just be

  1821. obedient.

  1822. And when

  1823. he says

  1824. act, act.

  1825. So,

  1826. another one,

  1827. and this is

  1828. probably one of

  1829. the last ones

  1830. I can think

  1831. of at the

  1832. moment,

  1833. but it's

  1834. like I

  1835. don't,

  1836. my knowledge

  1837. is limited.

  1838. I feel like

  1839. this guy's

  1840. just going

  1841. to throw

  1842. all this

  1843. stuff my

  1844. way.

  1845. I have

  1846. no idea

  1847. how to

  1848. answer

  1849. that.

  1850. So,

  1851. if God

  1852. is all

  1853. powerful

  1854. and God

  1855. is all

  1856. good,

  1857. you know,

  1858. and he

  1859. has the

  1860. power to

  1861. destroy

  1862. evil and

  1863. the desire

  1864. to destroy

  1865. evil,

  1866. why is

  1867. there evil?

  1868. You know

  1869. how to

  1870. answer that?

  1871. You know,

  1872. like if they

  1873. throw those

  1874. kind of

  1875. questions at

  1876. you,

  1877. and it

  1878. actually makes

  1879. you feel

  1880. like I

  1881. don't know

  1882. how to

  1883. answer

  1884. these

  1885. heavy

  1886. philosophical

  1887. theological

  1888. questions.

  1889. I don't

  1890. know how

  1891. to talk

  1892. to an

  1893. agnostic

  1894. or atheist

  1895. or someone

  1896. who just

  1897. doesn't care

  1898. at all,

  1899. or relativism

  1900. where everything's

  1901. true to

  1902. each individual,

  1903. whatever is

  1904. true to them

  1905. is true for

  1906. them.

  1907. It's okay.

  1908. You know,

  1909. don't wait

  1910. till,

  1911. you don't have

  1912. to go to

  1913. seminary and

  1914. read all the

  1915. greatest Christian

  1916. authors and

  1917. memorize the

  1918. entire scripture

  1919. before you go

  1920. out and

  1921. share the

  1922. gospel with

  1923. somebody.

  1924. because it's

  1925. the power of

  1926. God that

  1927. saves people.

  1928. If it was

  1929. up to us

  1930. to go out

  1931. and convince

  1932. people and

  1933. to argue

  1934. them into

  1935. heaven,

  1936. then it

  1937. would be

  1938. different.

  1939. But God

  1940. has said

  1941. that's not

  1942. the case.

  1943. You can

  1944. read 1

  1945. Corinthians

  1946. 1,

  1947. 2,

  1948. and 3,

  1949. and then

  1950. Paul will

  1951. tell you

  1952. that.

  1953. He tells

  1954. them,

  1955. when I

  1956. came to

  1957. you,

  1958. I didn't

  1959. come with

  1960. wise and

  1961. persuasive

  1962. words.

  1963. Because he

  1964. knew that he

  1965. didn't have

  1966. that.

  1967. He knew he

  1968. wasn't an

  1969. eloquent

  1970. speaker.

  1971. He didn't

  1972. have that

  1973. gift.

  1974. He wasn't

  1975. the greatest

  1976. communicator.

  1977. Paul knew

  1978. that.

  1979. And he

  1980. told them,

  1981. I decided

  1982. not to come

  1983. to you that

  1984. way because

  1985. I knew

  1986. that I

  1987. would be

  1988. found wanting.

  1989. But what

  1990. I did

  1991. do is I

  1992. came and

  1993. I spoke

  1994. to you

  1995. as a

  1996. demonstration

  1997. of the

  1998. Holy Spirit's

  1999. power.

  2000. I resolved

  2001. to preach

  2002. nothing to

  2003. you but

  2004. Christ and

  2005. him crucified.

  2006. And so

  2007. that the

  2008. power would

  2009. rest on God

  2010. and not on

  2011. me.

  2012. That's kind

  2013. of like what

  2014. he says

  2015. there.

  2016. So God

  2017. is not

  2018. limited to

  2019. how much

  2020. you know.

  2021. As long

  2022. as you

  2023. know the

  2024. gospel,

  2025. that's

  2026. like enough.

  2027. And God

  2028. can use

  2029. that.

  2030. And don't

  2031. be afraid

  2032. to say

  2033. to somebody,

  2034. I don't

  2035. know.

  2036. I don't

  2037. know.

  2038. Maybe I

  2039. can check

  2040. into that

  2041. for you.

  2042. But don't

  2043. feel like you

  2044. have to have

  2045. all the

  2046. answers before

  2047. you go and

  2048. start sharing

  2049. the truth

  2050. with someone.

  2051. There are

  2052. people that

  2053. are like,

  2054. for some

  2055. people,

  2056. they're

  2057. longing to

  2058. hear this,

  2059. and we're

  2060. just like

  2061. talking ourselves

  2062. out of it.

  2063. Maybe tomorrow.

  2064. This isn't

  2065. all right.

  2066. It's kind

  2067. of like all

  2068. these things.

  2069. Just go.

  2070. You know?

  2071. Just step

  2072. out and trust

  2073. the Lord.

  2074. Be wise.

  2075. Think about

  2076. things.

  2077. Use your

  2078. head.

  2079. Yes,

  2080. use the

  2081. wisdom God's

  2082. given you.

  2083. But ultimately,

  2084. you have to

  2085. learn to follow

  2086. what the

  2087. Spirit's leading

  2088. in different

  2089. situations.

  2090. things.

  2091. And so,

  2092. this is

  2093. something I

  2094. journaled

  2095. about this

  2096. summer.

  2097. But when

  2098. we are

  2099. fearful to

  2100. share Christ

  2101. with people,

  2102. it makes the

  2103. love of Christ,

  2104. which was

  2105. radical,

  2106. right?

  2107. The love of

  2108. Christ was

  2109. incredible.

  2110. He left

  2111. heaven to

  2112. come here

  2113. to die

  2114. and to save

  2115. us.

  2116. Like,

  2117. this just

  2118. makes no

  2119. sense.

  2120. We're

  2121. going to

  2122. get to

  2123. that in

  2124. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  2125. chapter 2

  2126. really soon.

  2127. But his

  2128. love was

  2129. amazing.

  2130. There was

  2131. no greater

  2132. love than

  2133. what Christ

  2134. showed.

  2135. And when

  2136. we are

  2137. afraid or

  2138. when we

  2139. are prideful

  2140. or whatever

  2141. and we're

  2142. not going

  2143. and proclaiming

  2144. to people,

  2145. it makes

  2146. the love of

  2147. Christ have

  2148. to be weak

  2149. and puny.

  2150. You see

  2151. that?

  2152. Like,

  2153. the love of

  2154. our Savior

  2155. is betrayed

  2156. as puny

  2157. when we don't

  2158. live that way

  2159. and we're

  2160. not willing

  2161. to go through

  2162. whatever it

  2163. takes to

  2164. reach

  2165. people.

  2166. The love

  2167. of Christ

  2168. is put

  2169. on display

  2170. as weak

  2171. and pathetic.

  2172. So,

  2173. if you're

  2174. feeling bad

  2175. and you have

  2176. sympathy for

  2177. your friends

  2178. or your

  2179. family and

  2180. you're like,

  2181. I see how

  2182. miserable their

  2183. lives are

  2184. right now.

  2185. I just feel

  2186. so bad

  2187. about it.

  2188. You know,

  2189. David

  2190. Livingston

  2191. said,

  2192. sympathy

  2193. is no

  2194. substitute

  2195. for action.

  2196. You can't

  2197. just feel

  2198. bad for

  2199. these people.

  2200. You have

  2201. to,

  2202. God has

  2203. you there,

  2204. sovereignly

  2205. there to

  2206. be a

  2207. light to

  2208. them.

  2209. He's not

  2210. asking you

  2211. to save

  2212. them.

  2213. That's

  2214. his job.

  2215. He's asking

  2216. you to be

  2217. an instrument

  2218. in his

  2219. hands to

  2220. work in

  2221. their life.

  2222. So,

  2223. they don't

  2224. need your

  2225. sympathy.

  2226. They need

  2227. Christ.

  2228. We've got to

  2229. stop being

  2230. afraid of

  2231. his unpopularity

  2232. and looking

  2233. like an idiot.

  2234. It's okay.

  2235. We can be

  2236. fools for

  2237. Christ.

  2238. Paul said

  2239. that in

  2240. one place.

  2241. We can be

  2242. fools for

  2243. Christ.

  2244. So,

  2245. start asking

  2246. God,

  2247. show me

  2248. how to

  2249. go about

  2250. this.

  2251. I know

  2252. that I

  2253. need to

  2254. be doing

  2255. this.

  2256. I want

  2257. to do

  2258. this.

  2259. Please

  2260. show me.

  2261. Who do

  2262. you have

  2263. me around

  2264. right now

  2265. that you

  2266. would have

  2267. me shed

  2268. the love

  2269. of Christ

  2270. with?

  2271. Turn to

  2272. last place

  2273. here.

  2274. Turn to

  2275. Acts 20.

  2276. We don't

  2277. want to

  2278. portray the

  2279. love of

  2280. our Savior

  2281. as weak.

  2282. I want it

  2283. to, and I

  2284. do, I make

  2285. Christ love

  2286. to be

  2287. pathetic

  2288. sometimes and

  2289. it breaks

  2290. my heart.

  2291. Acts 20

    Acts 20:24

  2292. verse 24,

  2293. sorry,

  2294. verse 24.

  2295. This is

  2296. Paul talking

  2297. here, and I

  2298. hope that

  2299. this can be

  2300. kind of like

  2301. a cry for

  2302. your life,

  2303. and mine

  2304. as well.

  2305. I want

  2306. this so

  2307. bad.

  2308. He says,

  2309. but I do

  2310. not account

  2311. my life of

  2312. any value,

  2313. nor as

  2314. precious to

  2315. myself,

  2316. if only I

  2317. may finish

  2318. my course

  2319. in the

  2320. ministry that

  2321. I have

  2322. received from

  2323. the Lord

  2324. Jesus,

  2325. to testify

  2326. to the

  2327. gospel of

  2328. the grace

  2329. of God.

  2330. And now,

  2331. behold, I

  2332. know that

  2333. none of you

  2334. among

  2335. whom I

  2336. have gone

  2337. about

  2338. proclaiming

  2339. the kingdom

  2340. will see

  2341. my face

  2342. again.

  2343. So Paul

  2344. knew, like,

  2345. you're not

  2346. going to

  2347. see me

  2348. again, to

  2349. these people

  2350. he's writing

  2351. to hear.

  2352. Therefore, I

  2353. testify to

  2354. you this

  2355. day that I

  2356. am innocent

  2357. of the blood

  2358. of you all.

  2359. And what he

  2360. means is,

  2361. like, I've

  2362. done what

  2363. God called

  2364. me to do.

  2365. When I was

  2366. with you, I

  2367. was obedient,

  2368. and whatever

  2369. happens is

  2370. going to be

  2371. on your head

  2372. and not

  2373. mine.

  2374. I have

  2375. carried out

  2376. my

  2377. responsibility.

  2378. And he

  2379. says,

  2380. I did not

  2381. shrink from

  2382. declaring to

  2383. you the

  2384. whole counsel

  2385. of God.

  2386. Pay careful

  2387. attention to

  2388. yourselves and

  2389. to all the

  2390. flock in

  2391. which the

  2392. Holy Spirit

  2393. has made

  2394. you overseers,

  2395. to care for

  2396. the church

  2397. of God,

  2398. which he

  2399. obtained with

  2400. his own

  2401. blood.

  2402. Amazing

  2403. passage.

  2404. Paul's just

  2405. like, I

  2406. just don't

  2407. care about

  2408. my life

  2409. anymore.

  2410. Like, if I

  2411. did, I

  2412. wouldn't be

  2413. doing what

  2414. I'm doing

  2415. right now.

  2416. If my

  2417. life was

  2418. here, I'm

  2419. like, wasting

  2420. it in the

  2421. greatest way,

  2422. but my

  2423. life is not

  2424. here.

  2425. My life is

  2426. hidden in

  2427. Christ in

  2428. eternity, and

  2429. I'm laboring

  2430. for that

  2431. kingdom and

  2432. that reality,

  2433. and so I

  2434. don't care.

  2435. I just want

  2436. to be able to

  2437. lay my head

  2438. down at night

  2439. and be like,

  2440. I testify to

  2441. the gospel of

  2442. the grace of

  2443. God today,

  2444. and I don't

  2445. care what it

  2446. costs me.

  2447. I didn't

  2448. shriek from

  2449. proclaiming to

  2450. you the whole

  2451. counsel of

  2452. God.

  2453. We want to

  2454. be able to

  2455. say that,

  2456. and I

  2457. pray that

  2458. we, this

  2459. really convicts

  2460. some people

  2461. here, and

  2462. it's just a

  2463. challenge and

  2464. push to us as

  2465. believers.

  2466. It's not

  2467. cool.

  2468. I mean,

  2469. there's some

  2470. things that God

  2471. is going to put

  2472. you through of

  2473. some miserable

  2474. times, just

  2475. like this isn't

  2476. coming out of

  2477. you into the

  2478. lost world,

  2479. and I want

  2480. you to keep

  2481. this verse in

  2482. mind in

  2483. James chapter

  2484. one, be not

  2485. hearers of the

  2486. word, but be

  2487. doers of the

  2488. word, and

  2489. we can't, I

  2490. don't want you

  2491. to come here

  2492. every week and

  2493. be like, oh,

  2494. that was a

  2495. great message,

  2496. amen, and then

  2497. go hang out

  2498. somewhere and

  2499. just go back to

  2500. life.

  2501. Like, that's not

  2502. the purpose for

  2503. why we gather.

  2504. All you're doing

  2505. is making yourself

  2506. more accountable,

  2507. and that's all

  2508. you're doing.

  2509. You're coming

  2510. here and just

  2511. trying to store

  2512. up knowledge and

  2513. store up theology,

  2514. but then you do

  2515. nothing with it.

  2516. All you're doing

  2517. is you're making

  2518. yourself more

  2519. accountable for

  2520. truth that you've

  2521. learned to God,

  2522. and so I want

  2523. you to learn.

  2524. I want you to

  2525. grow in your

  2526. knowledge.

  2527. We're going to

  2528. talk about some

  2529. great things this

  2530. semester, but

  2531. like, we have to

  2532. be obedient.

  2533. We have to put

  2534. into practice what

  2535. we know, and we

  2536. need the grace of

  2537. God to do it.

  2538. It's an impossible

  2539. task in and of

  2540. ourselves.

  2541. So, plea with

  2542. God to make you

  2543. an instrument of

  2544. reconciliation to

  2545. the lost world

  2546. around you, and

  2547. complete the joy

  2548. that Christ has

  2549. put into you by

  2550. doing that.

  2551. Well, we're

  2552. going to, I'll

  2553. close this in

  2554. prayer.

  2555. We might seem

  2556. to have some

  2557. time.

  2558. We started just

  2559. a little late

  2560. tonight because

  2561. of the fall

  2562. jam, and I

  2563. think we gained

  2564. like one or two

  2565. people because

  2566. of that, but

  2567. next week, no

  2568. mercy, back to

  2569. the normal time.

  2570. That was

  2571. intentional.

  2572. So, I'm going

  2573. to pray for us,

  2574. and we're just

  2575. going to respond

  2576. and sing.

  2577. Father, I feel

  2578. very insufficient

  2579. to even

  2580. communicate this

  2581. message tonight.

  2582. Lord, I know

  2583. that I do share

  2584. the gospel, and I

  2585. do desire for

  2586. the lost to

  2587. know you, but I

  2588. don't anywhere as

  2589. I should, and I

  2590. overlook so many

  2591. opportunities because

  2592. of laziness or my

  2593. pride, and so God,

  2594. I pray that you

  2595. would awaken to me

  2596. and everyone here

  2597. just a desire to

  2598. make you known in

  2599. the dark places

  2600. where you have us,

  2601. that we would be

  2602. the light of

  2603. Christ there, and

  2604. we wouldn't be all

  2605. fired up about

  2606. going to the

  2607. nations and other

  2608. countries if we're

  2609. not willing to walk

  2610. across the hallway

  2611. to share someone

  2612. who's dying in

  2613. their sin, and

  2614. help us to be

  2615. faithful where we

  2616. are, Lord, and

  2617. to trust you, to

  2618. step out, and to

  2619. be bold for the

  2620. sake of Christ, and

  2621. to not shriek,

  2622. but to boldly

  2623. proclaim the whole

  2624. counsel of God, and

  2625. to testify of the

  2626. gospel of the grace

  2627. of God.

  2628. Help us do that,

  2629. Lord.

  2630. We are going to

  2631. fail unless you be

  2632. with us, and so

  2633. Lord, make your name

  2634. great at the North

  2635. Georgia campus in

  2636. Nalaunaga, and

  2637. through what we do

  2638. and how you lead

  2639. us, God.

  2640. Thank you for

  2641. giving us the

  2642. privilege of being

  2643. those you use to

  2644. accomplish your

  2645. purpose.

  2646. what an honor we

  2647. have.

  2648. You don't need

  2649. us.

  2650. You could have

  2651. done this any way

  2652. you chose, but you

2653. chose to use us, and

  2654. we give you praise

  2655. for that, and we

  2656. love you.

  2657. In Christ's name,

  2658. amen.

  2659. Amen.
