  1. All right, and amen. Please have a seat and take with me, if you will, as your copy of God's Word.

  2. We certainly have been excited as we've studied through it over the past year.

  3. I'm not really sure how long we've been doing this for now.

  4. And we've been brought now to three chapters, which I've shared with you previously.

  5. At moments in the past weeks, I kind of wish didn't exist in the Book of Romans.

  6. There have been times where I wish we really just could have skipped to Chapter 12 and kept going on.

  7. But to be faithful to the letter itself, to not allow the enemy to dictate for us what we teach on on Sunday mornings, here we are.

  8. And we're dealing with some weighty truths, some things in Scripture that can be hard to understand.

  9. As even Peter wrote of Paul's writings,

  10. there are some things in them that are hard to understand,

  11. which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction as they do the other Scriptures.

  12. And so as we approach things like this, we must do so reverently and humbly and maybe with a bit of fear that we handle them properly.

  13. And so we've been looking together in Romans up to this point.

  14. We've seen Paul make this great case for justification by faith alone,

  15. that there's no thing that a human can do before God because we've all sinned.

  16. We've all fallen short of the glory of God.

  17. And it's by faith in Jesus Christ that we have right standing before Him.

  18. And that now we have the Spirit of God which abides in us,

  19. that helps us in our trouble, in our distress, in defeating sin.

  20. And yet, that struggle exists.

  21. That even as Christians, delivered from the bondage of sin,

  22. we still carry the weight of our flesh.

  23. And we strive against it by the Spirit within us.

  24. Not only that, but from the exterior, we're going to experience trouble.

  25. Chapter 8, verse 18, Paul says,

  26. For I consider that the suffering of this present time are not worth comparing

  27. with the glory that is to be revealed in us.

  28. And so He's lifted our eyes heavenward.

  29. He's looking and casting an eternal perspective

  30. so that as we struggle with the indwelling nature of sin

  31. and with the persecution of the world,

  32. even just the illness and the calamity that comes with the fallen world,

  33. we might look to eternal things.

  34. And then we're going to read, beginning in verse 28 of chapter 8,

  35. through the end of chapter 9.

  36. I hope that you'll follow along with me.

  37. I'm using an ESV, so I'll try to read slowly for you in case you're not.

  38. But let's begin in 8, 28.

  39. And we know that for those who love God,

  40. all things work together for good,

  41. for those who are called according to His purpose.

  42. For those whom He foreknew,

  43. He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son,

  44. in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers.

  45. And those whom He predestined, He also called.

  46. And those whom He called, He also justified.

  47. And those whom He justified, He also glorified.

  48. What then shall we say to these things?

  49. If God is for us, who can be against us?

  50. He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all,

  51. how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?

  52. Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?

  53. It is God who justifies.

  54. Who is to condemn?

  55. Christ Jesus is the one who died.

  56. More than that, who was raised.

  57. Who is at the right hand of God.

  58. Who indeed is interceding for us.

  59. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?

  60. Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine,

  61. or nakedness, or danger, or sword?

  62. As it is written,

  63. For your sake we are being killed all the day long.

  64. We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

  65. No.

  66. In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.

  67. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers,

  68. nor things present, nor things to come,

  69. nor powers, nor height, nor depth,

  70. nor anything else in all creation

  71. will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  72. I am speaking the truth in Christ.

  73. I am not lying.

  74. My conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit

  75. that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.

  76. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ

  77. for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen, according to the flesh.

  78. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants,

  79. the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises.

  80. To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh,

  81. is the Christ who is God over all, blessed forever.

  82. Amen.

  83. But it is not as though the word of God has failed.

  84. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel,

  85. and not all are children of Abraham, because they are his offspring.

  86. But through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  87. This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God,

  88. but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.

  89. For this is what the promise said,

  90. About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.

  91. And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man,

  92. our forefather Isaac, though they were not yet born,

  93. and had done nothing either good or bad,

  94. in order that God's purpose of election might continue,

  95. not because of works, but because of him who calls,

  96. she was told, the older will serve the younger.

  97. As it is written, Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.

  98. What shall we say then?

  99. Is there injustice on God's part?

  100. By no means.

  101. For he says to Moses,

  102. I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,

  103. and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

  104. So then it depends not on human will or exertion,

  105. but on God who has mercy.

  106. For the Scripture says to Pharaoh,

  107. For this very purpose I have raised you up,

  108. that I might show my power in you,

  109. and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.

  110. So then he has mercy on whomever he wills,

  111. and he hardens whomever he wills.

  112. You will say to me then,

  113. Why does he still find fault?

  114. For who can resist his will?

  115. But who are you, O man, to answer back to God?

  116. Will what is molded say to its molder,

  117. Why have you made me like this?

  118. Has the potter no right over the clay

  119. to make out of the same lump

  120. one vessel for honorable use,

  121. and another for dishonorable use?

  122. What if God, desiring to show his wrath

  123. and to make known his power,

  124. has endured with much patience

  125. vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,

  126. in order to make known the riches of his glory

  127. for vessels of mercy,

  128. which he has prepared beforehand for glory?

  129. Even us, whom he has called,

  130. not from the Jews only,

  131. but also from the Gentiles.

  132. As indeed he says in Hosea,

  133. Those who were not my people,

  134. I will call my people.

  135. And who was not beloved,

  136. I will call beloved.

  137. And in the very place where it was said to them,

  138. You are not my people,

  139. there they will be called sons of the living God.

  140. And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel,

  141. Though the number of the sons of Israel

  142. be as the sands of the sea,

  143. only a remnant of them will be saved.

  144. For the Lord will carry out his sentence

  145. upon the earth fully and without delay.

  146. And as Isaiah predicted,

  147. If the Lord of hosts had not left us offspring,

  148. we would have been like Sodom

  149. and become like Gomorrah.

  150. What shall we say then?

  151. That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness

  152. have attained it,

  153. that is a righteousness that is by faith,

  154. but that Israel who pursued a law

  155. that would lead to righteousness

  156. did not succeed in reaching that law.

  157. Why?

  158. Because they did not pursue it by faith,

  159. but as if it were based on works.

  160. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,

  161. as it is written,

  162. Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling

  163. and a rock of offense,

  164. and whoever believes in him

  165. will not be put to shame.

  166. Join me in a prayer over our time together.

  167. Father, I pray that you will bless

  168. the preaching of your word,

  169. and I pray that it will be faithful

  170. to the text's meaning.

  171. I pray that my study, Lord,

  172. and the words that you are filling me with,

  173. that I pray will come out clearly,

  174. will point people to the great truth

  175. of the majesty of God

  176. and the purpose of salvation

  177. to this world.

  178. I pray, Father, by your spirit,

  179. you will help us to hear and understand

  180. and apply

  181. and to rightly understand these truths

  182. so that we will be wise as we handle them.

  183. And I pray this in Christ's name.

  184. Amen.

  185. So I've broken for you down

  186. beginning in verse 6,

  187. the end of the chapter,

  188. the chapter into kind of four sections,

  189. and we're dealing with them in three weeks.

  190. to say that the large rejection of the gospel

  191. by the nation of Israel

  192. does not discredit the gospel

  193. because the unbelief of Israel

  194. and therefore the subsequent salvation of Gentiles

  195. is consistent, number one, with God's promises.

  196. We talked about that last week,

  197. verses 6 through 13.

  198. It's consistent with God's promises.

  199. Number two, that it is consistent with God's person.

  200. We'll look at that together today.

  201. And then three and four,

  202. which we'll look at next week.

  203. That it's consistent with God's prophecies

  204. and with his provision.

  205. And so together today,

  206. let's look at how

  207. the rejection of the gospel by the Israelites

  208. and therefore the inclusion of the Gentiles,

  209. God's sovereign plan,

  210. is consistent with God's person.

  211. Let me draw you to the second half of verse 11.

  212. This promise has been given here by God

  213. to Rebekah

  214. for Jacob to be the one who's loved.

  215. The promise is carried through.

  216. And then Paul writes,

  217. in order that God's purpose of election might continue,

  218. not because of works,

  219. but because of him who calls.

  220. The promise was carried by Jacob

  221. and the acting that he's referring to,

  222. that it not being by works,

  223. is simply them being born.

  224. Jacob and Esau were twins.

  225. Esau was the firstborn.

  226. And in so doing,

  227. he should have received the favor.

  228. He should have received all of the blessing

  229. as the firstborn,

  230. as these two are twins.

  231. But God,

  232. so that his purpose of election might stand,

  233. gave the promise to Jacob.

  234. And we talked last week at length

  235. about the doctrine of election.

  236. And today we get to look further

  237. at how that is consistent

  238. with God's person himself.

  239. And we see in our text today,

  240. verses 14 through 24,

  241. two objections.

  242. So Paul's laid this case

  243. for God's sovereign election of his people.

  244. That not all Israel is Israel.

  245. That he is saving now the church,

  246. which includes us.

  247. And there are objections that come up

  248. in people's minds.

  249. I would imagine that Paul has taught this now

  250. a number of times.

  251. And these have been common questions.

  252. I would propose that it's even questions

  253. in his own mind

  254. that he's had run through his mind

  255. and he's had to deal with

  256. with the scriptures.

  257. I remind you in chapter 9

  258. that he uses 12 Old Testament quotes,

  259. nine of which are first person God.

  260. We know that all of the Bible

  261. is inspired by our Lord.

  262. All written by him.

  263. But there are cases in the Old Testament

  264. where God actually speaks.

  265. It's the record of his voice

  266. and what he actually says.

  267. Nine of them are first person God.

  268. Why?

  269. This is what I want to say to you

  270. to preface all of this.

  271. Why does Paul use

  272. these particular Old Testament quotes?

  273. It is to quiet us.

  274. God himself has spoken on these matters.

  275. We will not understand all of it,

  276. this side of glory.

  277. The more I think about that,

  278. I'm not even sure we'll understand it,

  279. the other side of glory.

  280. We may not care to understand it

  281. because we'll be in the presence

  282. of the Almighty.

  283. But this side of glory,

  284. we certainly will not

  285. completely wrap our minds

  286. around God's full sovereignty

  287. and control.

  288. What Paul is telling us is

  289. listen to what the Lord says

  290. of these things.

  291. So the first objection in verse 14.

  292. What shall we say then?

  293. Is there injustice on God's part?

  294. And Paul's answer

  295. is the most emphatic no

  296. he could give in the Greek language.

  297. You could probably think

  298. of some English versions

  299. of the most emphatic no

  300. that could have been given.

  301. It's meginnoito.

  302. It's impossible.

  303. No, no, no.

  304. King James has rendered it.

  305. God forbid.

  306. It would be blasphemy

  307. to say such a thing.

  308. This by no means

  309. is forceful.

  310. No.

  311. God has sovereignly chosen

  312. who will be saved.

  313. Does that make him unjust?

  314. No, no, no.

  315. Exactly what Paul is saying.

  316. And then he quotes

  317. verse 15.

  318. He quotes what God says to Moses.

  319. I will have mercy

  320. on whom I have mercy

  321. and I will have compassion

  322. on whom I have compassion.

  323. But before we deal with

  324. what's happening

  325. with that Old Testament quote,

  326. let's look together

  327. just at a few texts.

  328. Genesis 18.25.

  329. Abraham says,

  330. Shall not the judge

  331. of all the earth

  332. do what is just?

  333. Zephaniah 3.5

  334. says that God

  335. does no injustice.

  336. Malachi 2.17.

  337. Listen to this.

  338. You have wearied

  339. the Lord

  340. with your words.

  341. But you say,

  342. How have we wearied Him?

  343. By saying,

  344. Everyone who does evil

  345. is good in the sight

  346. of the Lord

  347. and He delights in them.

  348. Or by asking,

  349. Where is the God

  350. of justice?

  351. Malachi says,

  352. You have made God

  353. grow tired of you

  354. because you keep asking,

  355. How is that fair?

  356. As we look across the world,

  357. we want it to be

  358. a certain way.

  359. God doesn't seem

  360. to be working things out

  361. the way we think

  362. it should be done.

  363. Where is the God

  364. of justice?

  365. Malachi says

  366. he's growing weary

  367. of those questions.

  368. Paul says to us,

  369. God's character

  370. is not only defined

  371. by justice.

  372. What if it was?

  373. What if God was

  374. only completely just?

  375. And He is.

  376. But what if He was

  377. only completely just?

  378. And this is the proper

  379. perspective we need

  380. as we read through this.

  381. The original audience

  382. of this letter

  383. would have had it

  384. read to them

  385. much the way I read

  386. beginning in verse 28.

  387. And that took a while,

  388. didn't it?

  389. But it would have been

  390. read to them

  391. beginning in chapter 1,

  392. verse 1.

  393. It would have been

  394. a grand sermon.

  395. It would have taken

  396. hours to sit and listen to.

  397. But they would have

  398. just recently heard

  399. in chapter 3,

  400. verse 10,

  401. there is none righteous,

  402. not one.

  403. No one seeks after God.

  404. No one does good.

  405. Paul has clearly

  406. laid that case for us

  407. that by no work

  408. that we can do

  409. will we be justified

  410. before God.

  411. And it comes to here.

  412. They have no room

  413. for self-righteousness

  414. at this point.

  415. Right?

  416. They are lamenting

  417. their own condition.

  418. They know that apart

  419. from God's work

  420. in their life,

  421. they are totally

  422. and utterly lost.

  423. If God were fully just,

  424. if that was all

  425. of His character,

  426. all of us

  427. would be damned.

  428. All of us are guilty

  429. in the original sin,

  430. and we ourselves

  431. have committed

  432. so much sin.

  433. All of us deserve

  434. damnation.

  435. It's ours.

  436. We bought it

  437. with our sin.

  438. And that's the condition

  439. that we read

  440. about the glorious,

  441. sovereign election

  442. of God

  443. to us.

  444. When we begin

  445. to think

  446. that we deserve

  447. things,

  448. look at me

  449. and my great life.

  450. we begin

  451. to read these things

  452. in a much different

  453. perspective,

  454. but we are,

  455. were enemies

  456. of God

  457. apart

  458. from Jesus Christ.

  459. Praise God

  460. that Jesus' character,

  461. God's character

  462. is not just

  463. wrapped up

  464. in His justice.

  465. Psalm 37.6

  466. says,

  467. He will bring forth

  468. your righteousness

  469. as the light

  470. and your justice

  471. as the noonday.

  472. So God is

  473. righteous,

  474. perfect,

  475. and holy.

  476. Psalm 97.2

  477. Clouds and thick

  478. darkness

  479. are all around Him.

  480. Righteousness

  481. and justice

  482. are the foundation

  483. of His throne.

  484. And then add to that

  485. Psalm 33.5

  486. He loves righteousness

  487. and justice.

  488. The earth is full

  489. of the steadfast love

  490. of the Lord.

  491. Psalm 89.14

  492. Righteousness

  493. and justice

  494. are the foundation

  495. of your throne.

  496. Steadfast love

  497. and faithfulness

  498. go before you.

  499. So God,

  500. being fully

  501. just

  502. and righteous,

  503. must

  504. punish

  505. sin.

  506. There is no sin

  507. ever committed,

  508. ever has been,

  509. being committed,

  510. ever will be committed,

  511. that will not be

  512. punished by God.

  513. So for those of us

  514. that our

  515. end is not destruction,

  516. full and final,

  517. eternal punishment

  518. for our sin,

  519. who was punished

  520. on our behalf?

  521. Jesus Christ.

  522. Because God

  523. is fully

  524. righteous,

  525. fully just,

  526. and yet

  527. He is love.

  528. He has shown

  529. some

  530. mercy.

  531. We did not

  532. deserve it.

  533. You cannot

  534. think that way.

  535. You have become

  536. a God

  537. in your own

  538. mind

  539. if you think

  540. you deserve

  541. the favor

  542. of God.

  543. Verse 15.

  544. I will have

  545. mercy

  546. on whom I

  547. have mercy

  548. and I will

  549. have compassion

  550. on whom I

  551. have compassion.

  552. We often

  553. don't understand

  554. New Testament

  555. text because

  556. we don't

  557. understand our

  558. Old Testament.

  559. We don't

  560. know

  561. where Paul

  562. is quoting

  563. from in this

  564. case.

  565. We know

  566. he said it

  567. to Moses

  568. because he

  569. says that.

  570. That might

  571. be the

  572. extent of

  573. our

  574. understanding.

  575. The original

  576. reader knew

  577. exactly what

  578. he was talking

  579. about.

  580. He knew

  581. the story

  582. and the

  583. condition,

  584. the case

  585. for this

  586. language.

  587. In Exodus

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  588. chapter 33

  589. is where this

  590. comes from.

  591. We see

  592. the people

  593. of Israel

  594. having been

  595. led out

  596. of captivity

  597. in Egypt,

  598. crossing the

  599. Red Sea,

  600. Pharaoh's army

  601. destroyed.

  602. They camp

  603. at the

  604. base of

  605. Mount Sinai

  606. and Moses

  607. goes up

  608. on the

  609. mountain.

  610. While he's

  611. up there,

  612. in this

  613. brief time

  614. he's up

  615. there,

  616. they get

  617. bored

  618. and they

  619. say,

  620. where has

  621. Moses gone?

  622. Where's our

  623. leader?

  624. This man

  625. that represented

  626. God.

  627. And so

  628. what do they

  629. do?

  630. They melt

  631. down all

  632. their gold

  633. and they

  634. build a

  635. golden

  636. calf.

  637. Moses

  638. gets news

  639. of this.

  640. God

  641. informs him

  642. of it.

  643. He

  644. pleads

  645. their case.

  646. He goes

  647. back down

  648. the mountain.

  649. This is

  650. when he

  651. breaks the

  652. tablets.

  653. He's so

  654. angry.

  655. He breaks

  656. the Ten

  657. Commandments

  658. at this

  659. time.

  660. God

  661. commands

  662. that

  663. 3,000

  664. men be

  665. killed

  666. as a

  667. punishment

  668. for this

  669. sin.

  670. But he

  671. doesn't

  672. destroy

  673. all of

  674. Israel.

  675. Moses

  676. goes back

  677. up on

  678. the mountain.

  679. A couple

  680. of weeks

  681. ago we

  682. talked about

  683. the parallel

  684. between

  685. Paul's

  686. lament

  687. for Israel

  688. that he

  689. desired that

  690. he himself

  691. could be

  692. cut off

  693. from Christ

  694. in order

  695. that Israel

  696. would be

  697. saved.

  698. And that

  699. was reflective

  700. of what

  701. Moses cried

  702. out to

  703. God.

  704. Moses

  705. said,

  706. leave me

  707. behind.

  708. If you're

  709. not taking

  710. your people,

  711. leave me

  712. behind too.

  713. You can

  714. count me

  715. accursed

  716. if you're

  717. not going

  718. to save

  719. your people.

  720. God

  721. promises

  722. him that

  723. he'll go

  724. with him.

  725. He'll

  726. deliver the

  727. people to

  728. their final

  729. destination

  730. to the

  731. promised

  732. land.

  733. And then

  734. in verse

  735. 18 of

  736. Exodus

  737. 33,

  738. Moses

  739. says,

  740. please

  741. show me

  742. your

  743. glory.

  744. Moses

  745. is amazed

  746. already at

  747. what God

  748. is doing.

  749. He says,

  750. please

  751. show me

  752. your

  753. glory.

  754. And God

  755. says,

  756. I will

  757. make all

  758. my goodness

  759. pass before

  760. you,

  761. and I

  762. will

  763. proclaim

  764. before you

  765. my name,

  766. the Lord.

  767. And I

  768. will be

  769. gracious to

  770. whom I

  771. will be

  772. gracious,

  773. and will

  774. show mercy

  775. on whom I

  776. will show

  777. mercy.

  778. God

  779. is

  780. incredibly

  781. significant.

  782. Think of

  783. where we

  784. are.

  785. We're on

  786. the very

  787. tail end

  788. of this

  789. story of

  790. Israel

  791. betraying

  792. God,

  793. deserving

  794. destruction.

  795. Not that

  796. they had

  797. ever deserved

  798. to be let

  799. out to

  800. begin with,

  801. but certainly

  802. now,

  803. God could

  804. have punished

  805. them.

  806. Moses

  807. pleads

  808. with God,

  809. and God

  810. adds to

  811. his name,

  812. the Lord,

  813. I am,

  814. and says,

  815. I will

  816. be gracious

  817. to whom I

  818. will be

  819. gracious,

  820. and I

  821. will show

  822. mercy on

  823. whom I

  824. will show

  825. mercy.

  826. What a

  827. great comfort

  828. this would

  829. have been

  830. to Moses.

  831. It didn't

  832. cause Moses

  833. to ask

  834. questions.

  835. Moses didn't

  836. go,

  837. wait a minute,

  838. but how

  839. was that

  840. fair?

  841. He said,

  842. good.

  843. I am

  844. glad that

  845. you are

  846. the Lord,

  847. and for

  848. some reason

  849. you are on

  850. our side,

  851. because we

  852. do not

  853. deserve it.

  854. When this

  855. name was

  856. originally

  857. given to

  858. Moses,

  859. chapter 3

  860. of Exodus,

  861. verse 13,

  862. then Moses

  863. said to

  864. God,

  865. if I come

  866. to the

  867. people of

  868. Israel and

  869. say to

  870. them,

  871. the God

  872. of your

  873. fathers has

  874. sent me

  875. to you,

  876. and they

  877. ask me,

  878. what is

  879. his name,

  880. what shall

  881. I say

  882. to them?

  883. It's the

  884. first giving

  885. of this

  886. name.

  887. God

  888. said to

  889. Moses,

  890. I am

  891. who I

  892. am,

  893. and he

  894. said,

  895. say this

  896. to the

  897. people of

  898. Israel,

  899. I am

  900. has sent

  901. me to

  902. you.

  903. God

  904. also said

  905. people of

  906. Israel,

  907. the Lord,

  908. same Hebrew

  909. word,

  910. the God

  911. of your

  912. fathers,

  913. the God

  914. of Abraham,

  915. the God

  916. of Isaac,

  917. and the

  918. God of

  919. Jacob,

  920. has sent

  921. me to

  922. you.

  923. This

  924. is my

  925. name

  926. forever,

  927. and thus

  928. I am

  929. to be

  930. remembered

  931. throughout

  932. all

  933. generations.

  934. This

  935. is the

  936. name

  937. that the

  938. Hebrew

  939. people

  940. won't

  941. say,

  942. Yahweh.

  943. It's

  944. called

  945. Y-H-W-H

  946. in the

  947. Hebrew.

  948. This

  949. is that

  950. name,

  951. and it

  952. contains

  953. in it

  954. so much

  955. amazing

  956. truth,

  957. but

  958. essentially

  959. what God

  960. is saying

  961. is that

  962. I am

  963. God,

  964. and you

  965. are not.

  966. I am

  967. God.

  968. I answer

  969. to no

  970. one.

  971. Everything

  972. answers to

  973. me.

  974. I like

  975. this.

  976. Everything

  977. plugs into

  978. God.

  979. God

  980. plugs into

  981. nothing.

  982. He is

  983. self-sustaining.

  984. He is

  985. self-existent.

  986. all power

  987. in the

  988. universe

  989. is in

  990. him.

  991. And so

  992. this

  993. God

  994. says to

  995. Moses,

  996. I will

  997. declare

  998. before you

  999. my name,

  1000. the Lord.

  1001. I am.

  1002. And I

  1003. will have

  1004. compassion,

  1005. on whom I

  1006. will have

  1007. compassion,

  1008. and I

  1009. will show

  1010. mercy,

  1011. to whom I

  1012. will show

  1013. mercy.

  1014. It's not

  1015. really a

  1016. complete answer

  1017. to the

  1018. question,

  1019. is it?

  1020. It's not.

  1021. If you

  1022. think as

  1023. logically as

  1024. I do,

  1025. it's not a

  1026. complete answer

  1027. to the

  1028. question.

  1029. Is there

  1030. injustice

  1031. then on

  1032. God's

  1033. part?

  1034. Paul says

  1035. no.

  1036. Couldn't

  1037. be.

  1038. That's

  1039. impossible.

  1040. You want

  1041. to know

  1042. why?

  1043. Because

  1044. God says

  1045. this is

  1046. how he

  1047. functions.

  1048. Because

  1049. God is

  1050. just,

  1051. and we

  1052. know that

  1053. to be

  1054. true.

  1055. So if

  1056. God's

  1057. doing

  1058. this,

  1059. it's

  1060. not

  1061. unjust.

  1062. That's

  1063. the answer

  1064. that we're

  1065. given to

  1066. this

  1067. question.

  1068. And it's

  1069. yours to

  1070. choose what

  1071. you do

  1072. with that.

  1073. I hope

  1074. that you

  1075. humble

  1076. yourself

  1077. to that

  1078. reality.

  1079. I hope

  1080. that you

  1081. won't stand

  1082. in judgment

  1083. over it.

  1084. So verse

  1085. 16,

  1086. he goes

  1087. on,

  1088. so then it

  1089. depends not

  1090. on human

  1091. will or

  1092. exertion,

  1093. but on

  1094. God who

  1095. has mercy.

  1096. For the

  1097. scripture says

  1098. to Pharaoh,

  1099. for this

  1100. very purpose

  1101. I have

  1102. raised you

  1103. up,

  1104. that I

  1105. might show

  1106. my power

  1107. in you,

  1108. and that

  1109. my name

  1110. might be

  1111. proclaimed

  1112. in all

  1113. the earth.

  1114. So then he

  1115. has mercy

  1116. on whomever

  1117. he wills,

  1118. and he

  1119. hardens

  1120. whomever

  1121. he wills.

  1122. That's

  1123. interesting,

  1124. he actually

  1125. juxtaposes

  1126. Pharaoh

  1127. against

  1128. Moses.

  1129. Again,

  1130. contextually,

  1131. think of

  1132. the story.

  1133. So we

  1134. have Moses,

  1135. the adopted

  1136. brother of

  1137. Pharaoh,

  1138. both leaders

  1139. of large

  1140. groups of

  1141. people,

  1142. both

  1143. murderers,

  1144. Pharaoh,

  1145. many Israelites

  1146. were murdered

  1147. under his

  1148. hand.

  1149. You remember

  1150. that the

  1151. reason Moses

  1152. fled Egypt

  1153. was because

  1154. he killed

  1155. an Egyptian

  1156. who was

  1157. being harsh

  1158. to one

  1159. of the

  1160. Israelites.

  1161. Both

  1162. murderers

  1163. neither

  1164. deserved

  1165. the favor

  1166. of God,

  1167. and yet

  1168. one did,

  1169. and the

  1170. other was

  1171. destroyed.

  1172. To what

  1173. end?

  1174. God's

  1175. glorious,

  1176. magnificent

  1177. name.

  1178. That it

  1179. would be

  1180. proclaimed,

  1181. that he

  1182. might show,

  1183. exhibit,

  1184. and we're

  1185. going to get

  1186. here later,

  1187. his wrath

  1188. to the world

  1189. for sin

  1190. as well

  1191. as his

  1192. mercy.

  1193. Now,

  1194. Paul does

  1195. not deny

  1196. the necessity

  1197. of faith

  1198. on our

  1199. part.

  1200. Now,

  1201. see,

  1202. Romans 1,

  1203. 16 and 17,

  1204. kind of the

  1205. whole thematic

  1206. verses for

  1207. this book.

  1208. For I am

  1209. not ashamed

  1210. of the

  1211. gospel,

  1212. for it is

  1213. the power

  1214. of God

  1215. for salvation

  1216. to everyone

  1217. who,

  1218. what?

  1219. Beliefs.

  1220. To the

  1221. Jew first,

  1222. and also to

  1223. the Greek.

  1224. For in it

  1225. the righteousness

  1226. of God

  1227. is revealed

  1228. from faith

  1229. for faith.

  1230. As it is

  1231. written,

  1232. the righteous

  1233. shall live

  1234. by faith.

  1235. So,

  1236. our salvation

  1237. is necessitated.

  1238. There's

  1239. necessity

  1240. for faith.

  1241. Ephesians 2,

  1242. 8 and 9,

  1243. Paul writes,

  1244. For by grace

  1245. you have been

  1246. saved through

  1247. faith.

  1248. This is not

  1249. your own doing.

  1250. It is the

  1251. gift of God,

  1252. not as a result

  1253. of works,

  1254. so that no

  1255. one may

  1256. boast.

  1257. Is faith

  1258. required on

  1259. our part?

  1260. Absolutely.

  1261. Who works

  1262. the faith?

  1263. God Almighty,

  1264. to His

  1265. glorious praise.

  1266. The second

  1267. objection,

  1268. that was

  1269. amazing,

  1270. the second

  1271. objection,

  1272. You will

  1273. say to me

  1274. then,

  1275. why does

  1276. He still

  1277. find fault?

  1278. For who

  1279. can resist

  1280. His will?

  1281. How many

  1282. of you,

  1283. please don't

  1284. raise your

  1285. hands,

  1286. but how

  1287. many of

  1288. you,

  1289. when first

  1290. dealing

  1291. with

  1292. God's

  1293. election,

  1294. ask this

  1295. question.

  1296. Maybe not

  1297. in this

  1298. exact phrasing,

  1299. but ask

  1300. this question.

  1301. I did,

  1302. but I

  1303. wrestled

  1304. with it.

  1305. I can

  1306. remember the

  1307. first time

  1308. I read

  1309. Romans chapter

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  1310. 9,

  1311. with that

  1312. question in

  1313. my mind,

  1314. and I came

  1315. to this

  1316. point,

  1317. I was so

  1318. elated,

  1319. because I

  1320. thought the

  1321. answer,

  1322. like the

  1323. real answer

  1324. to the

  1325. question,

  1326. was right

  1327. on its

  1328. heels.

  1329. I thought,

  1330. here it is,

  1331. I'm going to

  1332. work it all

  1333. out now,

  1334. I'm going to

  1335. totally understand

  1336. the universe,

  1337. after I read

  1338. the rest of

  1339. chapter 9.

  1340. We don't

  1341. get the

  1342. answer,

  1343. do we?

  1344. Why does

  1345. he still

  1346. find fault

  1347. for who

  1348. can resist

  1349. his will?

  1350. And I

  1351. love Paul's

  1352. writings.

  1353. I think if you

  1354. read Paul's

  1355. writing,

  1356. dramatically,

  1357. you'll,

  1358. you begin to

  1359. kind of feel

  1360. the sarcasm

  1361. sometimes,

  1362. the rhetoric,

  1363. because his

  1364. response is,

  1365. but who

  1366. are you,

  1367. oh man,

  1368. to answer

  1369. back to

  1370. God?

  1371. Will what

  1372. is molded

  1373. say to

  1374. its

  1375. molder,

  1376. why have

  1377. you made

  1378. me like

  1379. this?

  1380. Now,

  1381. the evil

  1382. is not

  1383. in asking

  1384. the question.

  1385. It is

  1386. okay to

  1387. ask questions.

  1388. It is

  1389. okay to

  1390. wrestle with

  1391. doctrines.

  1392. Please

  1393. seek out

  1394. the truth.

  1395. the problem

  1396. is when

  1397. we answer

  1398. back to

  1399. God.

  1400. When we

  1401. stand in

  1402. judgment over

  1403. him.

  1404. Talking

  1405. back.

  1406. Have we all

  1407. gotten popped

  1408. for talking

  1409. back to our

  1410. parents?

  1411. You know

  1412. the difference

  1413. between

  1414. answering your

  1415. parents,

  1416. having a

  1417. conversation

  1418. with them,

  1419. and talking

  1420. back.

  1421. Much

  1422. different.

  1423. That's

  1424. what Paul

  1425. is correcting

  1426. here, that

  1427. we would

  1428. talk back

  1429. to God.

  1430. And he

  1431. uses this

  1432. analogy.

  1433. And it's

  1434. not a

  1435. specific text

  1436. that he's

  1437. quoting, but

  1438. there are a

  1439. number of

  1440. times the

  1441. same analogy

  1442. is used

  1443. throughout the

  1444. Old Testament.

  1445. So I just

  1446. want to show

  1447. you a few.

  1448. Isaiah

    Isaiah 64:6

  1449. 64,

  1450. verses 6

  1451. and 8,

  1452. says,

  1453. We have

  1454. all become

  1455. like one

  1456. who is

  1457. unclean,

  1458. and all

  1459. our righteous

  1460. deeds are

  1461. like a

  1462. polluted

  1463. garment.

  1464. We all

  1465. fade like

  1466. a leaf,

  1467. and our

  1468. iniquities

  1469. like the

  1470. wind take

  1471. us away.

  1472. There is

  1473. no one

  1474. who calls

  1475. upon your

  1476. name,

  1477. who rouses

  1478. himself to

  1479. take hold

  1480. of you,

  1481. for you

  1482. have hidden

  1483. your face

  1484. from us,

  1485. and have

  1486. made us

  1487. melt in the

  1488. hand of our

  1489. iniquities.

  1490. Don't you

  1491. catch all

  1492. that?

  1493. All of us

  1494. are utterly

  1495. sinful.

  1496. No one

  1497. comes to you,

  1498. no one

  1499. turns to you

  1500. of their

  1501. own accord,

  1502. because you

  1503. have hidden

  1504. your face

  1505. from us.

  1506. But now,

  1507. O Lord,

  1508. you are our

  1509. father,

  1510. we are the

  1511. clay,

  1512. and you

  1513. are our

  1514. potter.

  1515. We are

  1516. all the

  1517. work of

  1518. your hand.

  1519. 18,

  1520. verses 1

  1521. through 6,

  1522. Arise and

  1523. go down to

  1524. the potter's

  1525. house,

  1526. this is God

  1527. talking to

  1528. Jeremiah,

  1529. and there

  1530. I will let

  1531. you hear

  1532. my words.

  1533. So I

  1534. went down

  1535. to the

  1536. potter's

  1537. house,

  1538. and there

  1539. he was

  1540. working at

  1541. his wheel,

  1542. and the

  1543. vessel he

  1544. was making

  1545. of clay

  1546. was spoiled

  1547. in the

  1548. potter's

  1549. hands,

  1550. and he

  1551. reworked

  1552. it into

  1553. another

  1554. vessel,

  1555. as it

  1556. seemed good

  1557. to the

  1558. potter to

  1559. do.

  1560. Then the

  1561. word of

  1562. the Lord

  1563. came to

  1564. me,

  1565. O house

  1566. of Israel,

  1567. can I

  1568. not do

  1569. with you

  1570. as this

  1571. potter

  1572. has done,

  1573. declares

  1574. the Lord?

  1575. Behold,

  1576. like the

  1577. clay in

  1578. the potter's

  1579. hand,

  1580. so are

  1581. you in

  1582. my hand,

  1583. O house

  1584. of Israel.

  1585. So in

  1586. the positive,

  1587. God can

  1588. take us,

  1589. who are

  1590. utterly

  1591. spoiled by

  1592. our sin,

  1593. and he

  1594. can rework

  1595. us.

  1596. He can

  1597. change us

  1598. because we

  1599. are pots.

  1600. He is

  1601. the potter.

  1602. And then the

  1603. most striking

  1604. one,

  1605. back in

  1606. Isaiah,

    Isaiah 45:9

  1607. chapter 45,

  1608. verse 9,

  1609. it says,

  1610. Woe to him

  1611. who strives

  1612. with him

  1613. who formed

  1614. him,

  1615. a pot

  1616. among

  1617. earthen

  1618. pots.

  1619. Does the

  1620. clay say

  1621. to him

  1622. who formed

  1623. it,

  1624. what are

  1625. you making,

  1626. or your

  1627. work has

  1628. no handles?

  1629. Are we,

  1630. those people,

  1631. woe to him

  1632. who strives

  1633. with him

  1634. who formed

  1635. him,

  1636. who answers

  1637. back to

  1638. God?

  1639. What are you

  1640. making?

  1641. Or,

  1642. your work

  1643. has no

  1644. handles.

  1645. If you're

  1646. one of these

  1647. people,

  1648. as I have

  1649. been,

  1650. so I'm

  1651. not standing

  1652. in judgment

  1653. over you,

  1654. I have

  1655. been arrogant,

  1656. I have stood

  1657. in judgment

  1658. over God's

  1659. word,

  1660. he's calling

  1661. you really

  1662. silly.

  1663. Does a pot

  1664. ever say

  1665. to the potter,

  1666. how come

  1667. you haven't

  1668. given me a

  1669. handle?

  1670. It would

  1671. be insane

  1672. for something

  1673. like that

  1674. to happen,

  1675. right?

  1676. Paul is

  1677. pointing out

  1678. the insanity

  1679. of you

  1680. standing in

  1681. judgment

  1682. over almighty

  1683. God.

  1684. So he says,

  1685. has the potter

  1686. no right

  1687. over the clay

  1688. to make out

  1689. of the same

  1690. lump of clay

  1691. one vessel

  1692. for honorable

  1693. use and

  1694. another for

  1695. dishonorable

  1696. use?

  1697. What if God

  1698. desiring to

  1699. show his

  1700. wrath and

  1701. to make

  1702. known his

  1703. power has

  1704. endured with

  1705. much

  1706. patience

  1707. vessels of

  1708. wrath prepared

  1709. for destruction?

  1710. So he makes

  1711. a statement

  1712. in a rhetorical

  1713. question.

  1714. God,

  1715. desiring to

  1716. show his

  1717. wrath,

  1718. made known

  1719. his power

  1720. with much

  1721. patience.

  1722. He made

  1723. vessels of

  1724. wrath prepared

  1725. for destruction

  1726. in order

  1727. to make

  1728. known the

  1729. riches of

  1730. his glory

  1731. for vessels

  1732. of mercy,

  1733. which he

  1734. has prepared

  1735. beforehand

  1736. for glory.

  1737. glory.

  1738. This is

  1739. us,

  1740. even us,

  1741. even us,

  1742. whom he

  1743. called not

  1744. from Jews

  1745. only,

  1746. but also

  1747. from Gentiles.

  1748. Remember

  1749. where Paul

  1750. is in the

  1751. book,

  1752. right?

  1753. We talked

  1754. about how

  1755. it seems

  1756. really random

  1757. at the

  1758. beginning of

  1759. chapter 9

  1760. that Paul

  1761. laments over

  1762. Israel.

  1763. Those who

  1764. were given

  1765. many of the

  1766. blessings,

  1767. the privileges

  1768. of God,

  1769. that they

  1770. had turned

  1771. their back

  1772. on the

  1773. Messiah.

  1774. He laments

  1775. over that.

  1776. They're his

  1777. people.

  1778. Right?

  1779. Don't we

  1780. do the

  1781. same sometimes

  1782. when we

  1783. approach the

  1784. doctrine of

  1785. election?

  1786. We lament

  1787. over those

  1788. who are not

  1789. saved.

  1790. Paul's in

  1791. the same

  1792. place.

  1793. Paul's not

  1794. high and

  1795. mighty,

  1796. casting

  1797. judgment.

  1798. God is

  1799. God.

  1800. God is

  1801. wrathful.

  1802. God judges.

  1803. Right?

  1804. Paul himself

  1805. is broken

  1806. over this.

  1807. But like

  1808. Moses,

  1809. he ultimately

  1810. has the

  1811. right

  1812. perspective.

  1813. Verse 24,

  1814. he says,

  1815. even us.

  1816. We're all

  1817. aware of

  1818. how filthy

  1819. and vile

  1820. we are.

  1821. Are we

  1822. not?

  1823. It's really

  1824. easy,

  1825. really easy

  1826. to look at

  1827. somebody else

  1828. and think

  1829. that they

  1830. are polished

  1831. and put

  1832. together.

  1833. To think

  1834. that they

  1835. don't sin.

  1836. Look at

  1837. them.

  1838. They're

  1839. phenomenal.

  1840. We do

  1841. that.

  1842. Very often

  1843. we elevate

  1844. people in

  1845. that way.

  1846. Christian

  1847. artists.

  1848. It happens

  1849. all the time

  1850. with them

  1851. because they

  1852. sing emotional

  1853. songs about

  1854. God.

  1855. They must

  1856. be perfect.

  1857. Preachers,

  1858. that happens

  1859. a lot with.

  1860. I hope

  1861. that I

  1862. talk honestly

  1863. about myself

  1864. enough that

  1865. you don't

  1866. do that

  1867. with me.

  1868. I struggle

  1869. with sin

  1870. the same

  1871. way you

  1872. do.

  1873. I need

  1874. a gracious

  1875. God to

  1876. help me

  1877. live every

  1878. day the

  1879. same way

  1880. that you

  1881. do.

  1882. God is

  1883. so we

  1884. should

  1885. connect

  1886. with that.

  1887. Even

  1888. us,

  1889. the worst

  1890. of sinners,

  1891. he has

  1892. called not

  1893. only from

  1894. the Jews

  1895. but also

  1896. from the

  1897. Gentiles.

  1898. Praise

  1899. him.

  1900. Now let's

  1901. be sure we

  1902. pause here

  1903. as we see

  1904. the potter

  1905. making objects

  1906. of destruction

  1907. and objects

  1908. of glory

  1909. to recognize

  1910. that God

  1911. is not

  1912. the source

  1913. of evil.

  1914. James 1.13

  1915. says,

  1916. let no one

  1917. say when

  1918. he is

  1919. tempted,

  1920. I am being

  1921. tempted by

  1922. God for

  1923. God cannot

  1924. be tempted

  1925. with evil

  1926. and he

  1927. himself

  1928. tempts

  1929. no one.

  1930. And

  1931. Habakkuk

  1932. 1.13

  1933. says,

  1934. you who

  1935. are of

  1936. pure eyes

  1937. than to

  1938. see evil

  1939. and cannot

  1940. look

  1941. at wrong.

  1942. These are

  1943. one of

  1944. those

  1945. apparent

  1946. paradoxes

  1947. of

  1948. scripture.

  1949. And I

  1950. say that

  1951. carefully

  1952. because there

  1953. are no

  1954. paradoxes

  1955. in scripture.

  1956. There are

  1957. no

  1958. inconsistencies

  1959. in scripture.

  1960. But it is

  1961. an apparent

  1962. paradox.

  1963. For God

  1964. to be fully

  1965. sovereign over

  1966. all things

  1967. and control

  1968. of all

  1969. things,

  1970. doesn't God

  1971. then also

  1972. have to be

  1973. the creator

  1974. of evil?

  1975. Would the

  1976. scriptures say

  1977. no?

  1978. He is

  1979. not.

  1980. No.

  1981. I have a

  1982. little mind

  1983. and I cannot

  1984. work out that

  1985. in its entirety.

  1986. But I trust

  1987. that the

  1988. Bible is

  1989. true

  1990. and that

  1991. it's

  1992. sufficient,

  1993. that it's

  1994. enough.

  1995. God has

  1996. given me

  1997. all that

  1998. I'm

  1999. supposed to

  2000. know

  2001. and I'm

  2002. finally coming

  2003. to a place

  2004. in my life

  2005. where I can

  2006. just rest

  2007. in that.

  2008. I don't

  2009. have to

  2010. work it

  2011. all out

  2012. all the

  2013. time.

  2014. I want to

  2015. give you an

  2016. example of a

  2017. man in

  2018. scripture that

  2019. wrestled with

  2020. the sovereignty

  2021. of God.

  2022. I want you

  2023. to turn with

  2024. me to

  2025. the book

  2026. of Job.

  2027. We're

  2028. going to

  2029. start in

  2030. chapter 32.

  2031. This is

  2032. bringing us

  2033. to a

  2034. closing for

  2035. those of

  2036. you who

  2037. are getting

  2038. concerned

  2039. about that.

  2040. Now Job

  2041. began his

  2042. great struggle

  2043. in the world

  2044. in a very

  2045. positive way.

  2046. We know

  2047. Job had

  2048. found favor

  2049. in God's

  2050. sight,

  2051. which means

  2052. when you

  2053. read that

  2054. in the

  2055. Old Testament,

  2056. that means

  2057. God had

  2058. given him

  2059. grace.

  2060. Read that

  2061. properly.

  2062. God had

  2063. blessed him

  2064. with many

  2065. children and

  2066. great lands.

  2067. The devil

  2068. came to

  2069. God and

  2070. said,

  2071. I see that

  2072. Job serves

  2073. you, but

  2074. what if we

  2075. stripped away

  2076. the blessings?

  2077. Peace by

  2078. peace, the

  2079. family was

  2080. taken away,

  2081. the land

  2082. was taken

  2083. away, his

  2084. health was

  2085. taken away.

  2086. And he

  2087. begins to

  2088. deal with

  2089. it in a

  2090. very healthy

  2091. way.

  2092. But then

  2093. his friends

  2094. come to

  2095. visit.

  2096. Job in

  2097. the book

  2098. of Job

  2099. has three

  2100. friends that

  2101. come to

  2102. visit him

  2103. to convince

  2104. him that

  2105. this calamity

  2106. has been

  2107. brought on

  2108. him because

  2109. of his own

  2110. doing.

  2111. Because the

  2112. way God

  2113. deals with

  2114. people is

  2115. those who

  2116. do right,

  2117. he shows

  2118. favor to,

  2119. and those

  2120. who do

  2121. wrong,

  2122. he does

  2123. not.

  2124. And there's

  2125. this back

  2126. and forth

  2127. in the

  2128. beginning,

  2129. 31 chapters,

  2130. back and

  2131. forth between

  2132. his friends

  2133. and him,

  2134. where they

  2135. basically say,

  2136. there is no

  2137. way you are

  2138. righteous in

  2139. God's eyes,

  2140. because he

  2141. wouldn't deal

  2142. with you this

  2143. way if you

  2144. were.

  2145. And Job

  2146. responds,

  2147. yes I am,

  2148. let me tell you

  2149. all the things

  2150. that I do,

  2151. let me tell you

  2152. how I handle

  2153. my affairs,

  2154. let me tell you

  2155. all these

  2156. things.

  2157. And he

  2158. continues to

  2159. build himself

  2160. up as

  2161. righteous in

  2162. their eyes.

  2163. And then a

  2164. guy comes on

  2165. the scene

  2166. named Elihu,

  2167. who I love,

  2168. and I really

  2169. wanted to name

  2170. Judah Elihu,

  2171. but we

  2172. decided against

  2173. it.

  2174. But Elihu

  2175. comes on the

  2176. scene and

  2177. begins to

  2178. speak some

  2179. sense into

  2180. the situation.

  2181. And if you

  2182. look in

  2183. chapter 32,

  2184. verse 2,

  2185. it says that

  2186. Elihu, the

  2187. son of

  2188. Baharel,

  2189. the Buzite,

  2190. of the family

  2191. of Ram,

  2192. burned with

  2193. anger.

  2194. He burned

  2195. with anger at

  2196. Job because

  2197. he justified

  2198. himself rather

  2199. than God.

  2200. What Job was

  2201. doing was he

  2202. was making

  2203. himself in

  2204. the right at

  2205. the expense of

  2206. God's character.

  2207. He was saying

  2208. to his friends,

  2209. no, no, no,

  2210. but I am

  2211. righteous.

  2212. I am

  2213. righteous.

  2214. And then the

  2215. nagging question

  2216. beyond that is,

  2217. why is God

  2218. dealing with you

  2219. in this way?

  2220. Why is it

  2221. then that

  2222. God is being

  2223. unjust?

  2224. Wasn't that the

  2225. question they

  2226. were asking?

  2227. Is there no

  2228. justice on

  2229. God's part?

  2230. If you're

  2231. righteous in

  2232. his eyes,

  2233. why does he

  2234. deal with

  2235. you in

  2236. this way?

  2237. The Lord,

  2238. God,

  2239. confirms that.

  2240. That's what's

  2241. going on in

  2242. Job's heart

  2243. in chapter 40,

  2244. verse 8.

  2245. He says,

  2246. will you

  2247. condemn me

  2248. that you

  2249. may be

  2250. in the

  2251. right?

  2252. So go

  2253. with me

  2254. here.

  2255. Let's

  2256. listen in

  2257. on what

  2258. Elihu said

  2259. to Job

  2260. beginning in

  2261. chapter 34,

  2262. verse 16.

  2263. Chapter 34,

  2264. verse 16.

  2265. This is

  2266. phenomenal

  2267. stuff.

  2268. Elihu,

  2269. six chapters,

  2270. he speaks to

  2271. Job,

  2272. and then God

  2273. picks up where

  2274. Elihu leaves off

  2275. and keeps

  2276. after him.

  2277. Chapter 34,

  2278. verse 16.

  2279. If you have

  2280. understanding,

  2281. hear this.

  2282. Listen to what

  2283. I say.

  2284. Shall one who

  2285. hates justice

  2286. govern?

  2287. No.

  2288. Will you

  2289. condemn him

  2290. who is

  2291. righteous and

  2292. mighty,

  2293. who says

  2294. to a king,

  2295. worthless one,

  2296. and to

  2297. nobles,

  2298. wicked man,

  2299. who shows

  2300. no partiality

  2301. to princes,

  2302. nor regards

  2303. the rich

  2304. more than

  2305. the poor,

  2306. for they

  2307. are all

  2308. the work

  2309. of his

  2310. hands.

  2311. God,

  2312. righteous

  2313. judge,

  2314. who governs.

  2315. That's what

  2316. Elihu is saying.

  2317. Then

  2318. chapter 36,

  2319. verse 22.

  2320. Behold,

  2321. God is

  2322. exalted in

  2323. his power.

  2324. Who is a

  2325. teacher like

  2326. him?

  2327. Who has

  2328. prescribed for

  2329. him his

  2330. way?

  2331. Or who

  2332. can say,

  2333. you have

  2334. done wrong?

  2335. The charge

  2336. that Elihu

  2337. brings to

  2338. Job.

  2339. And then

  2340. God gets

  2341. on board.

  2342. Chapter 38,

  2343. verse 2.

  2344. God says,

  2345. Who is this

  2346. that darkens

  2347. counsel by

  2348. words without

  2349. knowledge?

  2350. Dress for

  2351. action like

  2352. a man.

  2353. I will

  2354. question you,

  2355. and you

  2356. make it

  2357. known to

  2358. me.

  2359. Where were

  2360. you when

  2361. I laid

  2362. the foundation

  2363. of the

  2364. earth?

  2365. Tell me,

  2366. if you have

  2367. understanding.

  2368. Who determined

  2369. its measurements?

  2370. Surely you

  2371. know.

  2372. Or who

  2373. stretched the

  2374. line upon

  2375. it?

  2376. Or on

  2377. what were

  2378. its bases

  2379. sunk?

  2380. Or who

  2381. laid its

  2382. cornerstone

  2383. when the

  2384. morning stars

  2385. sang together

  2386. and all

  2387. the sons

  2388. of God

  2389. shouted

  2390. for joy?

  2391. You hear

  2392. what God

  2393. says to

  2394. the man

  2395. who

  2396. questions

  2397. him?

  2398. Who are

  2399. you,

  2400. O man?

  2401. To answer

  2402. back to

  2403. God,

  2404. what he

  2405. says.

  2406. Job

  2407. responds,

  2408. chapter 40,

  2409. verse 3.

  2410. Then

  2411. Job

  2412. answered the

  2413. Lord and

  2414. said,

  2415. behold,

  2416. I am

  2417. of small

  2418. account,

  2419. and what

  2420. shall I

  2421. answer you?

  2422. I lay

  2423. my hand

  2424. on my

  2425. mouth.

  2426. I have

  2427. spoken

  2428. once,

  2429. and I

  2430. will not

  2431. answer

  2432. twice,

  2433. but I

  2434. will proceed

  2435. no

  2436. further.

  2437. See Job's

  2438. humility?

  2439. God

  2440. says to

  2441. Job,

  2442. I am

  2443. God,

  2444. and you

  2445. are not,

  2446. and you

  2447. are to

  2448. be quiet.

  2449. What's

  2450. Job

  2451. saying?

  2452. Yes,

  2453. sir.

  2454. Yes,

  2455. sir.

  2456. And the

  2457. Lord responds

  2458. to him,

  2459. chapter 40,

  2460. verse 7,

  2461. dress for

  2462. action like

  2463. a man.

  2464. I will

  2465. question you,

  2466. and you

  2467. make it

  2468. known to

  2469. me.

  2470. God

  2471. says,

  2472. anyway,

  2473. you're

  2474. going to

  2475. answer me

  2476. just the

  2477. same.

  2478. Will you

  2479. even put

  2480. me in

  2481. the wrong?

  2482. Will you

  2483. condemn me

  2484. that you

  2485. might be

  2486. in the

  2487. right?

  2488. Have you

  2489. an arm

  2490. like God,

  2491. and can

  2492. you

  2493. thunder

  2494. with a

  2495. voice

  2496. like

  2497. his?

  2498. And he

  2499. goes on

  2500. for two

  2501. chapters.

  2502. And then

  2503. Job,

  2504. I would

  2505. just be

  2506. trembling.

  2507. God

  2508. were speaking

  2509. to me

  2510. directly

  2511. as he

  2512. speaks

  2513. to Job,

  2514. but God

  2515. speaks to

  2516. us by

  2517. his word

  2518. directly.

  2519. Right?

  2520. Listen to

  2521. Job's

  2522. response.

  2523. Job 42,

    Job 42:2

  2524. verse 2.

  2525. I know

  2526. that you

  2527. can do

  2528. all things

  2529. and that

  2530. no purpose

  2531. of yours

  2532. can be

  2533. thwarted.

  2534. Who is

  2535. this that

  2536. hides

  2537. counsel

  2538. without

  2539. knowledge?

  2540. Therefore

  2541. I have

  2542. uttered

  2543. what I

  2544. did not

  2545. understand,

  2546. things too

  2547. wonderful for

  2548. me which I

  2549. did not

  2550. know.

  2551. Hear,

  2552. and I

  2553. will speak.

  2554. I will

  2555. question you

  2556. and you

  2557. make it

  2558. known to

  2559. me.

  2560. I had

  2561. heard of

  2562. you by

  2563. the hearing

  2564. of the

  2565. ear,

  2566. but now

  2567. my eye

  2568. sees you.

  2569. Therefore

  2570. I despise

  2571. myself and

  2572. repent.

  2573. in dust

  2574. and ashes.

  2575. So here's

  2576. a man

  2577. who

  2578. questioned

  2579. the sovereignty

  2580. of God

  2581. in all

  2582. things.

  2583. And there's

  2584. where he

  2585. ends up

  2586. repenting

  2587. in dust

  2588. and in

  2589. ashes.

  2590. Where are

  2591. you in

  2592. this

  2593. today?

  2594. Do you

  2595. stand in

  2596. judgment

  2597. over God

  2598. or do

  2599. you humbly

  2600. submit

  2601. yourself

  2602. to his

  2603. word

  2604. which has

  2605. been brought

  2606. down

  2607. from above

  2608. to you?

  2609. Are you

  2610. talking back

  2611. to God

  2612. this morning?

  2613. Or are you

  2614. being quiet?

  2615. I hope

  2616. the latter

  2617. of those two.

  2618. Last week

  2619. I told you

  2620. that the

  2621. doctrine of

  2622. election

  2623. was not

  2624. meant to

  2625. confuse us.

  2626. It wasn't

  2627. meant to

  2628. make us

  2629. feel that

  2630. God's

  2631. character

  2632. has been

  2633. destroyed.

  2634. It's

  2635. meant to

  2636. serve as

  2637. a comfort

  2638. to our

  2639. souls.

  2640. As we

  2641. walk through

  2642. troubling

  2643. times to

  2644. know that

  2645. God is

  2646. fully

  2647. sovereign

  2648. over us,

  2649. our life,

  2650. our final

  2651. salvation.

  2652. As I

  2653. sin against

  2654. holy God

  2655. to know

  2656. that I

  2657. cannot

  2658. lose my

  2659. salvation

  2660. because it's

  2661. all of

  2662. him,

  2663. brings comfort

  2664. to my

  2665. soul.

  2666. It should

  2667. cause us

  2668. to praise

  2669. God.

  2670. We don't

  2671. deserve

  2672. his

  2673. salvation.

  2674. Church,

  2675. do we

  2676. believe that?

  2677. If you

  2678. believe that

  2679. your final

  2680. resting place

  2681. was absolute

  2682. and utter

  2683. destruction

  2684. forever,

  2685. you bought

  2686. it.

  2687. It was

  2688. yours.

  2689. But instead,

  2690. Christ took

  2691. it from you

  2692. and he gave

  2693. you his

  2694. righteousness.

  2695. If you

  2696. believe that,

  2697. it will cause

  2698. you to praise

  2699. him,

  2700. question him.

  2701. And it's

  2702. meant to

  2703. encourage us

  2704. to evangelism,

  2705. to know

  2706. that almighty

  2707. God goes

  2708. with us

  2709. when we

  2710. share the

  2711. gospel,

  2712. that he is

  2713. in control

  2714. of all

  2715. things,

  2716. and no

  2717. one can

  2718. stand against

  2719. the church

  2720. in the

  2721. advance of

  2722. the gospel.

  2723. It is all

  2724. God's

  2725. doing.

  2726. And all

  2727. of these

  2728. ultimately

  2729. are a result

  2730. of our

  2731. affections

  2732. being moved

  2733. toward him.

  2734. We will do

  2735. these things.

  2736. We will

  2737. automatically

  2738. praise.

  2739. We will

  2740. go and

  2741. evangelize.

  2742. Our souls

  2743. will be

  2744. comforted

  2745. when we

  2746. are wrapped

  2747. up in

  2748. who God

  2749. is.

  2750. When we

  2751. are pulled

  2752. from this

  2753. temporary

  2754. place to

  2755. heavenly realms

  2756. and we

  2757. understand who

  2758. we are

  2759. in Christ.

  2760. Charles Spurgeon

  2761. wrote a

  2762. sermon called

  2763. Love's

  2764. Logic.

  2765. It was

  2766. written on

  2767. 1 John

  2768. 4.19.

  2769. This is

  2770. actually our

  2771. closing.

  2772. So listen to

  2773. this quote

  2774. from that

  2775. sermon quickly

  2776. with me.

  2777. We love

  2778. him because

  2779. he first

  2780. loved us.

  2781. This is

  2782. 1 John

  2783. 4.19.

  2784. Love to

  2785. God,

  2786. wherever it

  2787. really exists,

  2788. has been

  2789. created in

  2790. the bosom

  2791. by a

  2792. belief of

  2793. God's

  2794. love to

  2795. us.

  2796. No man

  2797. loves God

  2798. till he

  2799. knows that

  2800. God loves

  2801. him.

  2802. And every

  2803. believer loves

  2804. God for

  2805. this reason

  2806. first and

  2807. chiefly,

  2808. that God

  2809. loves him.

  2810. He has

  2811. seen himself

  2812. to be

  2813. unworthy of

  2814. divine favor,

  2815. yet he has

  2816. believed God's

  2817. love and the

  2818. gift of his

  2819. dear son,

  2820. and he has

  2821. accepted the

  2822. atonement that

  2823. Christ has

  2824. made as a

  2825. proof of

  2826. God's love,

  2827. and now

  2828. being satisfied

  2829. of the

  2830. divine affection

  2831. towards him,

  2832. he of

  2833. necessity

  2834. loves God.

  2835. That is

  2836. the place

  2837. where Paul

  2838. writes from.

  2839. Not in a

  2840. place of

  2841. judging,

  2842. not in a

  2843. place of

  2844. asking,

  2845. is that not

  2846. fair?

  2847. But saying,

  2848. I'm glad

  2849. God isn't

  2850. fair.

  2851. If God

  2852. were fair,

  2853. I'd be

  2854. destroyed.

  2855. But he

  2856. loves me.

  2857. And remember

  2858. he's in the

  2859. middle of his

  2860. lament for

  2861. Israel,

  2862. and he's

  2863. going to

  2864. go on in

  2865. the next

  2866. two chapters

  2867. to talk

  2868. about how

  2869. he still

  2870. loves

  2871. Israel.

  2872. And in

  2873. all of

  2874. this,

  2875. at the

  2876. end,

  2877. this big

  2878. dialogue,

  2879. all of it,

  2880. chapter 11,

  2881. verse 33,

  2882. he says,

  2883. Oh, the

  2884. depth of

  2885. the riches

  2886. and wisdom

  2887. and knowledge

  2888. of God,

  2889. how unsearchable

  2890. are his

  2891. judgments,

  2892. and how

  2893. inscrutable

  2894. his ways,

  2895. for who

  2896. has known

  2897. the mind

  2898. of the Lord,

  2899. or who

  2900. has been

  2901. his counselor,

  2902. or who

  2903. has given

  2904. a gift

  2905. to him

  2906. that he

  2907. might be

  2908. repaid.

  2909. For from

  2910. him and

  2911. through him

  2912. and to

  2913. him are

  2914. all things.

  2915. To him

  2916. be glory

  2917. forever.

  2918. Amen.

  2919. That's where

  2920. he goes

  2921. with all

  2922. of this

  2923. conversation.

  2924. And that

  2925. is certainly

  2926. where we

  2927. should go

  2928. as well.

  2929. Let's pray

  2930. together.
