  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word, which I hope you brought with you this morning, and turn to Paul's letter to the Romans chapter 10.

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  2. To be honest and humble this morning, I have been dreading coming to this point in the book of Romans.

  3. And by this point, I mean chapter 11, verse 26, which we're going to get to today, if you can believe it or not.

  4. But, beginning in chapter 9, I have been wrestling with the meaning and the implications contained in such difficult, difficult text.

  5. I have taken some comfort in kind of widely reading and seeing that I'm not the only one, a bit confused by it.

  6. I take comfort that Peter himself, the apostle in 2 Peter chapter 3, verse 16, said that there are some things in Paul's writings that are hard to understand.

    2 Peter 3:16

  7. Even Peter himself was a tad confused at times.

  8. I have been actually kind of physically in anguish over the bearing and the meaning of this text that we're going to get to today.

  9. You're going to think I'm crazy.

  10. We are going to go from chapter 10, verse 16, through chapter 11, verse 32, taking a particular look at Israel and the meaning.

  11. What is Paul getting at about Israel?

  12. How is it that the grace of God is relating to Israel?

  13. And that has been really the argument that he began for us at the beginning of chapter 9.

  14. So let's read it together.

  15. And I just ask that you be very attentive.

  16. As we normally do verse-by-verse exposition, I won't be quite verse-by-versing it today.

  17. So this is your verse-by-verse dose.

  18. And then I'm going to kind of jump a little bit through the chapter so that we can actually make it through today.

  19. And I hope you'll see the value in that by the time we finish our time together, which is starting at 11.

  20. We'll see how this goes.

  21. All right.

  22. So begin reading in verse 16 of chapter 10.

  23. But they have not all obeyed the gospel.

  24. For Isaiah says,

  25. Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?

  26. So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

  27. But I ask, have they not heard?

  28. Indeed they have.

  29. For their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

  30. But I ask, did Israel not understand?

  31. First, Moses says, I will make you jealous of those who are not a nation.

  32. With a foolish nation, I will make you angry.

  33. Then Isaiah is so bold as to say, I have been found by those who did not seek me.

  34. I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me.

  35. But of Israel, he says, all day long I've held up my hands to a disobedient and contrary people.

  36. I ask then, has God rejected his people?

  37. By no means.

  38. For I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin.

  39. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew.

  40. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah?

  41. How he appeals to God against Israel?

  42. Lord, they have killed your prophets.

  43. They have demolished your altars.

  44. And I alone am left, and they seek my life.

  45. But what is God's reply to him?

  46. I have kept for myself 7,000 men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.

  47. So too, at the present time, there is a remnant chosen by grace.

  48. But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works.

  49. Otherwise, grace would no longer be grace.

  50. What then?

  51. Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking.

  52. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened.

  53. As it is written, God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see, and ears that would not hear, down to this very day.

  54. And David says, let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them.

  55. Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs forever.

  56. So I asked, did they stumble in order that they might fall?

  57. By no means.

  58. Rather, through their trespass, salvation has come to the Gentiles, so as to make Israel jealous.

  59. Now, if their trespass means riches for the world, and if their failure means riches for the Gentiles,

  60. how much more would their full inclusion mean?

  61. Now, I am speaking to you, Gentiles, and as much then as I am an apostle to the Gentiles,

  62. I magnify my ministry in order somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous and thus save some of them.

  63. For if their rejection means the reconciliation of the world, what will their acceptance mean but life from the dead?

  64. If the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, so is the whole lump, and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

  65. But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others,

  66. and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches.

  67. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root that supports you.

  68. Then you will say, branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.

  69. That is true.

  70. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith.

  71. So do not become proud, but fear.

  72. For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.

  73. Note then the kindness and the severity of God.

  74. Severity toward those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness.

  75. Otherwise you too will be cut off.

  76. And even they, if they do not continue in their unbelief, will be grafted in, for God has the power to graft them in again.

  77. For if you were cut from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted contrator nature into a cultivated olive tree,

  78. how much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree?

  79. Lest you be wise in your own sight.

  80. I want you to understand this mystery, brothers.

  81. A partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.

  82. And in this way, all Israel will be saved.

  83. As it is written, the Deliverer will come from Zion.

  84. He will banish ungodliness from Jacob.

  85. And this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins.

  86. As regards the gospel, they are enemies of God for your sake.

  87. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers.

  88. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

  89. For just as you were at one time disobedient to God, but now have received mercy because of their disobedience,

  90. so they too have now been disobedient in order that by the mercy shown to you, they also may now receive mercy.

  91. For God has consigned all to disobedience, that he may have mercy on all.

  92. Let's pray together.

  93. Father God, I feel the weight of this text this morning.

  94. But I pray as we've read from your Holy Scripture,

  95. and as we listen to the preaching of it, and just even as I preach it,

  96. that you will teach us from it.

  97. We know that all Scripture is profitable.

  98. So this text is for us this day.

  99. And I pray, God, that will be the case.

  100. That by your Spirit, we will feel the truth, and it will move us to action.

  101. And I pray this in Christ's name.

  102. Amen.

  103. So we've been in the book of Romans for quite some time now.

  104. We've been marching through it.

  105. I need to go back and look and actually see how long we've been at this now together.

  106. But those of you who are here may remember in Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  107. I preached a sermon on verses 19 through 16,

  108. and I said that this text was the crux of Romans.

  109. For those of you not familiar with that term,

  110. I used to, I don't really anymore, but used to rock climb quite a bit.

  111. And every route has or had, for me, a crux.

  112. And the crux was always the most difficult move in the entire climb.

  113. So if you could pull the crux off, with fair certainty,

  114. you were going to be able to finish that particular route.

  115. And that is this for Romans.

  116. Martin Luther actually called it the center of the Bible,

  117. verses 19 through 26.

  118. And it's where we see that the whole world,

  119. verse 19, is going to be held accountable to God.

  120. For no human being will be justified in his sight.

  121. Down in verse 22, there's no distinction.

  122. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  123. And could be then only justified, verse 24,

  124. by his grace as a gift through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ,

  125. who's the propitiation, the replacement for our sin.

  126. We received his righteousness in what Martin Luther called the great exchange.

  127. So to understand the entirety of Scripture,

  128. as well as just where we're at today in Romans,

  129. we have to get this right.

  130. The case that Paul has been building,

  131. beginning in chapter 1 and working his way through,

  132. is that all man is condemned in God's sight,

  133. because all men have sinned.

  134. There is no good thing we can do.

  135. There's no lineage we can have,

  136. no associations,

  137. no activity that's going to make us right before God

  138. except faith in his Son,

  139. which is a grace to us.

  140. I didn't know it at the time.

  141. I didn't have verse 26 and chapter 11 in mind

  142. when I said that this was so key,

  143. so important that we get this absolutely right.

  144. I'm glad I did,

  145. and I'm glad I'm saying it again now.

  146. We must see that this is the case.

  147. This is the lens by which we must look at

  148. the rest of Romans and all of the Scriptures.

  149. It's very key that we get that right.

  150. Man has sinned,

  151. and therefore we are found unworthy.

  152. We are depraved,

  153. utterly worthless in God's sight.

  154. But by the propitiation,

  155. the work of Christ,

  156. and our faith in him,

  157. we can be redeemed,

  158. have a right standing before God.

  159. That is the way of salvation.

  160. Not a way of salvation.

  161. That is the way of salvation.

  162. So Paul continues to go on

  163. and build a case for what now life in Christ looks like.

  164. This receiving of the Spirit

  165. and life by the Spirit.

  166. The difficulty that we're going to experience

  167. as Christians in chapter 8.

  168. And then he gets at the end of chapter 8

  169. to talk about the sovereignty of God in salvation.

  170. And so if God was sovereign in our salvation,

  171. he's also going to be sovereign in our perfection

  172. and our final completion.

  173. He is sovereign over all things.

  174. So as we suffer,

  175. we have this great and glorious truth

  176. that if God is for us,

  177. who can be against us?

  178. No one.

  179. Not even ourselves.

  180. Right?

  181. He is good and loving to us

  182. because he is God

  183. and he is in control.

  184. Right?

  185. Then he, in chapter 9,

  186. says,

  187. but,

  188. the question in his own mind,

  189. and I'm sure the question he was asked many times

  190. is,

  191. what about the Jews?

  192. What about the people that,

  193. that culturally they had an understanding

  194. were God's people?

  195. These were the people

  196. that God had given all these blessings to.

  197. You see in verse 4 and verse 5 of chapter 9,

  198. they had the glory,

  199. the covenants,

  200. the giving of the law,

  201. the worship,

  202. and the promises,

  203. the patriarchs.

  204. And it's from their flesh,

  205. according to the flesh,

  206. that Christ was born.

  207. He himself was a Jew.

  208. What about those people,

  209. right,

  210. that had all these benefits

  211. given to them?

  212. And Paul then gives us his famous argument

  213. in chapter 9

  214. of God's sovereignty and salvation.

  215. We see the introduction of the term election

  216. in verse 11.

  217. That God's purpose of election might stand

  218. not on the basis of works.

  219. Jacob and Esau is the example

  220. given there, right?

  221. Esau was the eldest son.

  222. His work was that he came out of the womb first,

  223. but the promise was given to Jacob,

  224. so that the eternal purpose of election

  225. might stand not on the basis of works,

  226. but because of him who calls.

  227. That's verse 11.

  228. He turns back then in chapter 10,

  229. end of 9 and then into 10,

  230. to talk once again about the Jews.

  231. So what is it that's going on

  232. in God's sovereign eternal purposes?

  233. How is it that he still is relating

  234. and he kind of rewinds back

  235. to the beautiful simplicity

  236. of the gospel

  237. that anyone who believes in him,

  238. verse 13 of chapter 10,

  239. for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord

  240. will be saved.

  241. Verse 14,

  242. how will they call on whom they have not believed

  243. and how will they believe in him

  244. and whom they have never heard?

  245. And how are they here without someone preaching?

  246. We talked over the past three weeks

  247. about the mission of the church,

  248. which is to preach the gospel,

  249. the good news of Jesus Christ,

  250. because anyone who hears it

  251. and believes it

  252. and calls on the name of the Lord

  253. will be saved.

  254. So as Paul talks about

  255. the exclusion of some

  256. in Romans chapter 9,

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  257. he then wraps it back around

  258. and says,

  259. but anyone who believes

  260. will be saved.

  261. And then he turns back

  262. in the most challenging text

  263. I've ever had to preach,

  264. I hope ever will have to preach,

  265. at the end of 10

  266. and into 11

  267. to continue to address Israel.

  268. And that's what we're going to talk,

  269. we're going to focus in on today.

  270. Next week,

  271. Lord willing,

  272. we're going to talk about us,

  273. the Gentiles,

  274. and how it is we've benefited

  275. from this.

  276. This morning's going to be

  277. a bit academic,

  278. and for that I apologize.

  279. At the end,

  280. I promise to make it practical

  281. for your living.

  282. But I think it's important

  283. that we get this

  284. absolutely right

  285. to the best of our ability

  286. by the grace of God.

  287. But let's see things.

  288. In Paul's argument,

  289. he's argued in chapter 9,

  290. verse 27 through 29,

  291. that God has always saved

  292. a remnant of Israel.

  293. Okay, so look at that there

  294. at the end.

  295. And Isaiah cries out

  296. concerning Israel,

  297. though the number of the sons of Israel

  298. be as the sand of the sea,

  299. only a remnant of them

  300. will be saved.

  301. For the Lord will carry out

  302. his sentence upon the earth

  303. fully and without delay.

  304. And as Isaiah predicted,

  305. if the Lord of hosts

  306. had not left us offspring,

  307. we would have been like Sodom

  308. and become like Gomorrah.

  309. So, number one,

  310. we have to recall

  311. that he's already stated

  312. that God has always saved

  313. a remnant of Israel,

  314. remnant being the operative word

  315. in this case.

  316. Secondly, God has the right

  317. to show mercy

  318. or to harden

  319. whomever he desires.

  320. He is God.

  321. We talked about him

  322. being the great I am.

  323. Everything plugs into him,

  324. but he plugs into nothing else.

  325. He is God.

  326. And the question

  327. asked in verse 19 of chapter 9,

  328. the person who says,

  329. you will say to me then,

  330. why does he still find fault?

  331. For who can resist his will?

  332. And Paul's response to them is,

  333. who are you, O man?

  334. To answer back to God.

  335. God has spoken.

  336. He has decreed

  337. that he'll have mercy

  338. on whom he will

  339. and he'll harden whom he will

  340. because he's God.

  341. Don't be so haughty.

  342. Don't be so arrogant

  343. and stand in judgment over him.

  344. He's God.

  345. You're a man.

  346. As the creation,

  347. worship your creator

  348. for who he is.

  349. He's worthy of that praise.

  350. So that's the second one.

  351. God has the right

  352. to show mercy

  353. or to harden

  354. whomever he desires.

  355. Number three,

  356. Israel has rebelled

  357. against God

  358. throughout her history.

  359. It's been a constant theme

  360. throughout the history of Israel.

  361. Rebellion,

  362. even though they had received

  363. all of these

  364. beautiful pictures

  365. of God's grace,

  366. the things that were meant

  367. to point to

  368. the Christ that was coming,

  369. the tabernacle,

  370. the law,

  371. the sacrifice,

  372. the patriarchs,

  373. the prophets,

  374. all of those things,

  375. these reflections

  376. or shadows,

  377. if you will,

  378. of the coming glory

  379. in Christ.

  380. Yet,

  381. she continued to rebel

  382. in chapter 10,

  383. verse 21.

  384. But of Israel,

  385. he says,

  386. all day long,

  387. I've held out my hands

  388. to a disobedient

  389. and a contrary people.

  390. And that's the stage.

  391. We can't divorce

  392. where we're about to be

  393. in chapter 11

  394. from where we've been

  395. in chapters 1

  396. through

  397. first half of 10.

  398. Right?

  399. We can't do it.

  400. It would be

  401. exegetically unfaithful

  402. to do so.

  403. But let's step

  404. even a little bit

  405. further back

  406. from the book of Romans.

  407. Okay?

  408. And let's just see

  409. how Jesus

  410. dealt with the Jews,

  411. speaking to the Jews

  412. in Matthew chapter 8.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  413. If you'll turn with me there,

  414. we're going to look

  415. at three texts

  416. in Matthew

  417. and then two in Zechariah,

  418. which you don't have

  419. to turn to.

  420. Okay?

  421. Matthew chapter 8,

    Matthew 8:11

  422. verse 11.

  423. Jesus says,

  424. now remember,

  425. in all three of these texts,

  426. he's speaking to a Jewish audience.

  427. He says,

  428. I tell you,

  429. many will come from east

  430. and west,

  431. the world,

  432. and recline at table

  433. with Abraham,

  434. Isaac,

  435. and Jacob

  436. in the kingdom of heaven,

  437. while the sons

  438. of the kingdom,

  439. Israelites,

  440. will be thrown

  441. into the outer darkness.

  442. In that place,

  443. there will be weeping

  444. and gnashing

  445. of teeth.

  446. Here,

  447. Jesus is already

  448. beginning to expand

  449. the gospel message

  450. out beyond

  451. just the nation

  452. of Israel.

  453. Okay?

  454. We see Paul

  455. as the carrier

  456. of that message,

  457. as the culmination,

  458. the fulfillment

  459. of what Jesus

  460. is saying here

  461. as he begins

  462. to take the gospel

  463. out to the Gentiles.

  464. And just in case

  465. you don't know,

  466. Gentiles is everybody

  467. but Jews,

  468. just in case.

  469. I think we're all,

  470. I'm pretty sure,

  471. we're all Gentiles

  472. in this room.

  473. That's what the scriptures mean.

  474. All right?

  475. So,

  476. there's going to be

  477. this passing

  478. of the gospel

  479. from the unbelieving Jews

  480. to the nations,

  481. to the world.

  482. Matthew chapter 21,

    Matthew 21:43

  483. verse 43.

  484. He says,

  485. I'm going to read it

  486. as you're getting there.

  487. Please don't dislike me

  488. for that.

  489. Therefore,

  490. I tell you,

  491. the kingdom of God

  492. will be taken away

  493. from you

  494. and given

  495. to a people

  496. producing its fruits.

  497. Okay?

  498. So,

  499. again,

  500. the same thing

  501. he's been saying

  502. in Matthew chapter 8.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  503. The gospel

  504. is going to be

  505. passing from the Jews

  506. to the Gentiles.

  507. Okay?

  508. And then,

  509. Matthew 22.

  510. So,

  511. turn just a little bit there.

  512. Verse 1.

  513. And again,

  514. Jesus spoke to them

  515. in parables,

  516. saying,

  517. The kingdom of heaven

  518. may be compared

  519. to a king

  520. who gave a wedding feast

  521. for his son,

  522. God throwing a wedding feast

  523. for Jesus Christ,

  524. and sent his servants

  525. to call those

  526. who were invited

  527. to the wedding feast,

  528. but they would not come.

  529. Again,

  530. he sent other servants,

  531. saying,

  532. Tell those who are invited,

  533. See,

  534. I have prepared my dinner,

  535. my oxen and my fat calves

  536. have been slaughtered,

  537. and everything is ready.

  538. Come to the wedding feast.

  539. Okay?

  540. So,

  541. these are all the blessings

  542. given to Israel.

  543. All right?

  544. The prophets,

  545. the sacrificial system,

  546. the tabernacle,

  547. all these things,

  548. these pictures

  549. of the coming Christ.

  550. Verse 5.

  551. But they paid no attention

  552. and went off,

  553. one to his farm,

  554. another to his business,

  555. while the rest seized his servants,

  556. treated them shamefully,

  557. and killed them.

  558. And those are the prophets.

  559. The king was angry,

  560. and he sent his troops

  561. and destroyed those murderers

  562. and burned their city.

  563. Then he said to his servants,

  564. The wedding feast is ready,

  565. but those invited were not worthy.

  566. Go therefore to the main roads

  567. and invite to the wedding feast

  568. as many as you find.

  569. And those servants went out

  570. into the roads

  571. and gathered all whom they found,

  572. both bad and good.

  573. So the wedding hall

  574. was filled with guests,

  575. but when the king came in

  576. to look at the guests,

  577. he saw there a man

  578. who had no wedding garment,

  579. and he said to him,

  580. Friend, how did you get in here

  581. without a wedding garment?

  582. And he was speechless.

  583. Then the king said to the attendants,

  584. Bind him hand and foot

  585. and cast him into the outer darkness.

  586. In that place,

  587. there will be weeping

  588. and gnashing of teeth.

  589. For many are called,

  590. but few are chosen.

  591. So there's this expansion,

  592. once again,

  593. of the invitation

  594. to come to the party.

  595. Both good and bad,

  596. he says,

  597. are invited.

  598. The both good and bad,

  599. in reference here,

  600. are the Jews

  601. and the Gentiles.

  602. The Jews

  603. and the Gentiles.

  604. So they go out

  605. and he invites,

  606. he brings.

  607. And a man comes in

  608. and he's not wearing

  609. a wedding garment.

  610. In these days,

  611. if you showed up to a wedding,

  612. you were given something

  613. to put on

  614. to show that you were

  615. an invited guest.

  616. I didn't have time

  617. to research what it was

  618. you would put on,

  619. but it was a garment

  620. of some sort

  621. you would wear

  622. and you would joyfully

  623. put it on to say,

  624. I am here celebrating

  625. what's going on

  626. in this place.

  627. And this is ultimately

  628. talking about

  629. the marriage supper

  630. of the Lamb.

  631. Jesus Christ

  632. feasting with his people

  633. and guess what

  634. our wedding garment

  635. is going to be?

  636. It's going to be

  637. the righteousness of Christ.

  638. Because we're invited guests.

  639. So there's this picture.

  640. Then in Zechariah,

  641. there's just some prophecy.

  642. So Zechariah 12.10,

  643. God speaks through Zechariah

  644. and says,

  645. and I will pour out

  646. on the house of David

  647. and the inhabitants

  648. of Jerusalem

  649. a spirit of grace

  650. and please for mercy

  651. so that when they look

  652. on me

  653. on whom they have pierced

  654. they shall mourn for him

  655. as one mourns

  656. for an only child

  657. and weep bitterly

  658. over him

  659. as one weeps

  660. over a firstborn.

  661. Chapter 13,

  662. verse 1 of Zechariah.

  663. On that day

  664. there shall be

  665. a fountain open

  666. for the house of David

  667. and the inhabitants

  668. of Jerusalem

  669. to cleanse them

  670. from sin

  671. and uncleanliness.

  672. So we see

  673. that the gospel

  674. passes

  675. from the Jews

  676. to the Gentiles

  677. but it has not

  678. left them entirely.

  679. The grace of God

  680. has been expanded

  681. across the world

  682. including those

  683. who are of the nation

  684. of Israel,

  685. including the Jewish people.

  686. Paul asks that question

  687. in chapter 11,

  688. verse 1, right?

  689. I ask then,

  690. has God rejected

  691. his people?

  692. By no means.

  693. And he makes the case

  694. of himself,

  695. his present day self.

  696. I'm a Jew

  697. and I'm a believer.

  698. By and large

  699. the nation

  700. had rejected Christ

  701. but many Jewish

  702. yep,

  703. not a good word for that,

  704. Jewish people,

  705. right?

  706. Many Jewish people

  707. had been turning

  708. to Christ

  709. at this time.

  710. God hadn't rejected

  711. his people

  712. and you see here

  713. the teaching

  714. of Jesus

  715. and Matthew

  716. and this prophecy

  717. in Zechariah.

  718. We see these two things.

  719. Both

  720. are going

  721. to be true

  722. and that's

  723. where Paul's wrestling.

  724. Alright?

  725. So we've

  726. seen the stage

  727. in Romans.

  728. We've come back

  729. from it a little bit

  730. just to look at

  731. some other scriptures

  732. generally.

  733. And so we get

  734. to this phrase

  735. in chapter 11,

  736. verse 26.

  737. And in this way

  738. all Israel

  739. will be saved.

  740. There are three

  741. major

  742. arguments

  743. for what this means.

  744. And within those

  745. three majors

  746. there are some

  747. variations certainly

  748. on them.

  749. I say to you

  750. humbly

  751. that I have

  752. an opinion

  753. that is not

  754. inspired.

  755. Certainly what I say

  756. should only be

  757. weighed against

  758. the scriptures.

  759. I hope I make

  760. a clear case

  761. because if I don't

  762. then I shouldn't

  763. be studying to preach.

  764. I hope that

  765. the opinion

  766. I've arrived at

  767. makes some sense

  768. to you

  769. as I present it

  770. to you.

  771. But I want to

  772. quickly tell you

  773. these three arguments

  774. and then tell you

  775. kind of where

  776. I rest

  777. on this.

  778. Number one,

  779. there's an argument

  780. that when

  781. he refers to

  782. all Israel

  783. that he's

  784. speaking of

  785. the church.

  786. And that kind

  787. of logic is

  788. pulled from

  789. the beginning

  790. of chapter 9,

  791. verse 6

  792. when Paul says,

  793. but it is not

  794. as though the word

  795. of God has failed

  796. for not all

  797. who are descended

  798. from Israel

  799. belong to Israel.

  800. And he makes

  801. this argument

  802. that those of us

  803. who are of the church

  804. are of the spiritual

  805. Israel.

  806. And certainly

  807. the scriptures

  808. do that.

  809. They do do that.

  810. And I can see

  811. why somebody

  812. would be tempted

  813. because it cleans

  814. it up.

  815. It makes it

  816. really nice

  817. and neat

  818. to do it

  819. that way.

  820. But you kind

  821. of have to

  822. ignore the rest

  823. of the chapter

  824. for that to be

  825. possible.

  826. Paul is speaking

  827. of the nation

  828. of Israel.

  829. Look with me.

  830. I'm going to do

  831. this really fast

  832. so we don't

  833. run out of time.

  834. But look with me

  835. beginning in

  836. verse 1 of chapter 11.

  837. He asks the question,

  838. has God rejected

  839. his people?

  840. No.

  841. I myself am an

  842. Israelite.

  843. So he's talking

  844. about his heritage.

  845. I'm an Israelite.

  846. His people

  847. an Israelite.

  848. Then he goes on

  849. in verse 2

  850. to talk about

  851. his people

  852. whom he foreknew.

  853. And at the end

  854. of verse 2

  855. being Israel.

  856. Verse 7.

  857. What then Israel

  858. failed to obtain

  859. what it was seeking?

  860. The elect obtained it.

  861. Verse 11.

  862. They,

  863. so I ask

  864. did they stumble

  865. in order that they

  866. might fall?

  867. And it goes on

  868. and it goes on.

  869. I'm probably

  870. wasting time

  871. to continue to do

  872. this, right?

  873. Verse 11.

  874. There.

  875. Israel.

  876. Verse 12.

  877. There.

  878. Then you see

  879. the world.

  880. And if there.

  881. Failure.

  882. Riches for the Gentiles.

  883. How much more

  884. will their inclusion

  885. mean?

  886. Okay, so

  887. if we follow

  888. the pronouns

  889. through,

  890. and I'm just

  891. going to stop

  892. there,

  893. but it keeps

  894. on marching

  895. its way

  896. up to verse 26.

  897. We follow

  898. the pronouns.

  899. Certainly we can't

  900. say that he just

  901. suddenly changes

  902. his language

  903. at this point.

  904. He just suddenly

  905. totally throws out

  906. and shifts it

  907. just to massively

  908. confuse everyone

  909. who might read

  910. this letter,

  911. right?

  912. That's not the case

  913. at all.

  914. So we can very

  915. quickly and easily

  916. dismiss that.

  917. Paul is not

  918. arguing here

  919. that in verse 26

  920. that in this way

  921. all Israel,

  922. meaning all the

  923. church,

  924. will be saved.

  925. It's not what he

  926. means.

  927. The second option,

  928. and this is the

  929. most prevalent

  930. and popular,

  931. which is not

  932. the one I'm

  933. resting on,

  934. which gives me

  935. great hesitation,

  936. is the national

  937. argument,

  938. right?

  939. It's an eschatological

  940. argument.

  941. It's an end times

  942. argument that the

  943. day will come

  944. one day when

  945. all of the

  946. Gentile peoples

  947. meant to be

  948. saved will be

  949. saved,

  950. and then all

  951. Israel will be

  952. saved.

  953. My challenge

  954. with this is

  955. that it seems

  956. inconsistent.

  957. I want to

  958. focus in,

  959. these people do,

  960. on the word

  961. all Israel.

  962. I want to

  963. focus in on

  964. that,

  965. but then neglect

  966. what that would

  967. actually mean.

  968. If we just

  969. simply look at

  970. the phrasing

  971. all Israel,

  972. would that not

  973. mean every Jew

  974. who ever lived?

  975. From the beginning

  976. to the end?

  977. That in some way

  978. God is a

  979. universalist in

  980. regards to this

  981. nation?

  982. And here's where

  983. chapter 3,

  984. verse 19 through

  985. 26 serves us

  986. well.

  987. There's not a

  988. separate promise,

  989. as some have

  990. suggested.

  991. There's a

  992. separate covenant

  993. for the Jewish

  994. people and a

  995. different covenant,

  996. the covenant of

  997. grace, for the

  998. church.

  999. They're one and

  1000. the same.

  1001. That's the

  1002. argument Paul was

  1003. making for us.

  1004. Jew or Gentile,

  1005. there's no

  1006. distinction,

  1007. doesn't matter,

  1008. all of a sudden

  1009. fall short of

  1010. the glory of God

  1011. and will only be

  1012. redeemed,

  1013. only be redeemed

  1014. through Christ,

  1015. through his

  1016. propitiation,

  1017. the covenant of

  1018. grace.

  1019. So if we're

  1020. going to be

  1021. exegetically

  1022. consistent,

  1023. we can't say

  1024. that all means

  1025. all Israel

  1026. from the beginning

  1027. to the end,

  1028. all those who

  1029. have Jewish

  1030. heritage.

  1031. So most who

  1032. hold this view

  1033. don't believe

  1034. that.

  1035. They believe

  1036. that there

  1037. will come a

  1038. time when

  1039. all the Gentiles

  1040. will be included

  1041. in the end of

  1042. all things and

  1043. then all of the

  1044. Israelites who

  1045. are left will

  1046. turn to Christ.

  1047. There will be a

  1048. great national

  1049. turning back to

  1050. Christ.

  1051. Maybe, but I

  1052. don't believe

  1053. that's what Paul

  1054. is saying here.

  1055. There are some

  1056. who say, well,

  1057. not all of them,

  1058. but at least a

  1059. lot of them.

  1060. I mean, there's

  1061. just going to be

  1062. a big revival

  1063. that will happen

  1064. in Israel.

  1065. But then you

  1066. have to read it

  1067. and say, and

  1068. in this way,

  1069. all Israel,

  1070. well, I mean,

  1071. at least most

  1072. of them, or

  1073. not all Israel,

  1074. but the people

  1075. who are left

  1076. alive at this

  1077. time that we

  1078. don't understand.

  1079. That's what you

  1080. have to do.

  1081. Now, just to be

  1082. clear, I disagree

  1083. with the Johns

  1084. who all hold

  1085. this view.

  1086. You know who

  1087. the Johns are?

  1088. John Piper,

  1089. John MacArthur,

  1090. and Jonathan

  1091. Edwards.

  1092. This is what's

  1093. been making me

  1094. mentally sick

  1095. about this.

  1096. Generally

  1097. speaking, if

  1098. you disagree

  1099. with these

  1100. three men,

  1101. you really

  1102. ought to

  1103. reconsider your

  1104. stance, which

  1105. I've been doing

  1106. for the past

  1107. two months,

  1108. yeah, about

  1109. two and a

  1110. half months.

  1111. I've been

  1112. really, really

  1113. wrestling with

  1114. this.

  1115. these men

  1116. are godly

  1117. and wise.

  1118. I just

  1119. think in this

  1120. case they're

  1121. wrong.

  1122. I don't think

  1123. that's what it

  1124. means.

  1125. Now, granted,

  1126. if they're

  1127. right, it

  1128. does not

  1129. ultimately

  1130. change what

  1131. this text

  1132. really means

  1133. for us.

  1134. And we'll

  1135. get there

  1136. when we get

  1137. to the

  1138. practicality

  1139. of it.

  1140. They're not

  1141. distorting it

  1142. in order to

  1143. meet some

  1144. end of their

  1145. own.

  1146. I hope and

  1147. pray that

  1148. they're right.

  1149. I hope and

  1150. pray that there

  1151. will come a

  1152. time when the

  1153. whole nation

  1154. of Israel who's

  1155. alive will turn

  1156. to Christ.

  1157. And that

  1158. may happen.

  1159. I just

  1160. don't think

  1161. that's what

  1162. Paul is

  1163. trying to

  1164. teach us

  1165. in this

  1166. case.

  1167. So the

  1168. third argument,

  1169. and the one

  1170. I believe is

  1171. right, is

  1172. that he's

  1173. referring to

  1174. the remnant.

  1175. He's referring

  1176. to those of

  1177. Israel that

  1178. will be saved.

  1179. He means

  1180. all of Israel

  1181. intended to be

  1182. saved.

  1183. And I

  1184. recognize I

  1185. have to do

  1186. the same

  1187. thing, right,

  1188. to be

  1189. exegetically

  1190. consistent.

  1191. I have to

  1192. go, but

  1193. we've got to

  1194. add a few

  1195. more words in

  1196. there to make

  1197. that make

  1198. sense.

  1199. And so I'm

  1200. going to

  1201. show you

  1202. contextually

  1203. why I

  1204. think that's

  1205. what he

  1206. means when

  1207. he says

  1208. all Israel.

  1209. So, firstly,

  1210. he's speaking

  1211. in the present

  1212. tense throughout

  1213. the entire

  1214. chapter up

  1215. to this

  1216. point.

  1217. He's speaking

  1218. present tense,

  1219. which is why

  1220. I believe he's

  1221. continuing to

  1222. speak in the

  1223. present tense.

  1224. Okay?

  1225. Many who

  1226. hold to the

  1227. remnant still

  1228. think it's an

  1229. end times

  1230. issue, right?

  1231. I think it's

  1232. the remnant

  1233. present day.

  1234. Because,

  1235. verse 1,

  1236. right?

  1237. When he

  1238. asks, I

  1239. ask them,

  1240. as God

  1241. rejects his

  1242. people, he

  1243. says, by

  1244. no means,

  1245. and he

  1246. gives his

  1247. current day

  1248. evidence,

  1249. present tense.

  1250. I myself

  1251. am an

  1252. Israelite,

  1253. and I'm

  1254. a recipient

  1255. of God's

  1256. grace.

  1257. Verse 5,

  1258. says, so

  1259. too at the

  1260. present time

  1261. there is a

  1262. remnant

  1263. chosen by

  1264. grace.

  1265. Verse 13

  1266. and 14,

  1267. he says,

  1268. now I'm

  1269. speaking to

  1270. you Gentiles.

  1271. In as much

  1272. then as I

  1273. am an

  1274. apostle to

  1275. the Gentiles,

  1276. I magnify

  1277. my ministry

  1278. in order to

  1279. somehow make

  1280. my fellow

  1281. Jews jealous

  1282. and thus

  1283. save some

  1284. of them.

  1285. When?

  1286. Present tense,

  1287. right?

  1288. He's speaking

  1289. about his

  1290. ministry.

  1291. Now, I

  1292. magnify it

  1293. to make

  1294. Gentiles be

  1295. Christians so

  1296. that the Jews

  1297. will be jealous

  1298. so that some

  1299. of them will

  1300. be saved.

  1301. And then look

  1302. in verse 30

  1303. and 31 of

  1304. the use of

  1305. now.

  1306. Okay?

  1307. So once

  1308. again,

  1309. for just as you

  1310. were at one

  1311. time disobedient to

  1312. God, but now

  1313. have received mercy,

  1314. because of their

  1315. disobedience.

  1316. So they too

  1317. have now been

  1318. disobedient in

  1319. order that by

  1320. the mercy shown

  1321. to you, they

  1322. also may now

  1323. receive mercy.

  1324. Right?

  1325. So even after

  1326. the infamous

  1327. verse 26, we

  1328. see present

  1329. tense language

  1330. in verse 30

  1331. and verse 31.

  1332. Okay?

  1333. So I think

  1334. we're still

  1335. speaking in

  1336. present tense.

  1337. And I want to

  1338. show you,

  1339. beginning in

  1340. verse 11,

  1341. and Michael

  1342. Q, verse 11,

  1343. a pattern that

  1344. Paul has

  1345. established

  1346. throughout the

  1347. scripture to

  1348. get us here.

  1349. Okay?

  1350. So number

  1351. one, we see

  1352. the Jewish

  1353. rejection of

  1354. the gospel.

  1355. That's the

  1356. red lettering.

  1357. Okay?

  1358. We see the

  1359. Jewish rejection

  1360. of the gospel.

  1361. We see that

  1362. in chapter 10,

  1363. verse 21,

  1364. which is a

  1365. quotation from

  1366. Isaiah 65,

  1367. 2.

  1368. I spread up my

  1369. hands all the

  1370. day to a

  1371. rebellious people

  1372. who walk in a

  1373. way that is not

  1374. good, following

  1375. their own

  1376. devices.

  1377. That's what he's

  1378. talking about,

  1379. chapter 10,

  1380. verse 21.

  1381. That's why he

  1382. brings that up.

  1383. Jewish rejection

  1384. of the gospel.

  1385. Secondly, the

  1386. grace extended to

  1387. the Gentiles in

  1388. blue, up here.

  1389. Grace extended to

  1390. the Gentiles.

  1391. Chapter 10,

  1392. verse 20, he's

  1393. quoting from

  1394. Isaiah 65,

  1395. 1.

  1396. I was ready to

  1397. be sought by

  1398. those who did

  1399. not ask for me.

  1400. I was ready to

  1401. be found by

  1402. those who did

  1403. not seek me.

  1404. I said,

  1405. here I am,

  1406. here I am,

  1407. to a nation that

  1408. was not called

  1409. by my name.

  1410. So again,

  1411. here we see,

  1412. grace extended to

  1413. the Gentiles and

  1414. presented in

  1415. chapter 10,

  1416. verse 20,

  1417. and again and

  1418. again and again,

  1419. which I'm going

  1420. to show you in

  1421. just a moment.

  1422. Thirdly, we see

  1423. the envy of the

  1424. Jews.

  1425. Chapter 10,

  1426. verse 19, he

  1427. quotes Deuteronomy

  1428. 32, 21.

  1429. They have made me

  1430. jealous with what

  1431. is no God.

  1432. They have provoked

  1433. me to anger with

  1434. their idols.

  1435. So I will make

  1436. them jealous with

  1437. those who are no

  1438. people.

  1439. I will provoke

  1440. them to

  1441. anger with a

  1442. foolish nation.

  1443. So the part of

  1444. the goal of this

  1445. rejection is that

  1446. Gentiles receive the

  1447. gospel so that

  1448. Jews become jealous

  1449. so that Jews

  1450. receive the gospel.

  1451. This pattern.

  1452. And fourthly,

  1453. the salvation of

  1454. Israel.

  1455. Chapter 11,

  1456. verse 1-4.

  1457. We see

  1458. Elijah basically

  1459. saying,

  1460. destroy them.

  1461. I'm the only

  1462. one left.

  1463. God's response to

  1464. them.

  1465. But what is God's

  1466. reply?

  1467. I have kept for

  1468. myself 7,000 men

  1469. who have not

  1470. bowed the knee

  1471. to Baal.

  1472. So he establishes

  1473. it for us there

  1474. and then continually

  1475. on and on and

  1476. on.

1477. So the envy of the

1478. Jews is in green up

  1479. there and then the

  1480. salvation of Israel

  1481. not found in verse

1482. 11 is going to be

  1483. in orange.

  1484. We're going to go

  1485. through these

  1486. together.

  1487. Okay?

  1488. Verse 11,

  1489. So I ask,

  1490. did they stumble

  1491. in order they

  1492. might fall?

  1493. By no means.

  1494. Rather,

  1495. through their

  1496. trespass,

  1497. the rejection

  1498. of the gospel

  1499. by Jewish

  1500. peoples,

  1501. salvation has

  1502. come to the

  1503. Gentiles,

  1504. right?

  1505. Grace extended

  1506. to the Gentiles

  1507. so as to make

  1508. Israel jealous.

  1509. Okay?

  1510. So the third,

  1511. the envy of the

  1512. Jews.

  1513. Right?

  1514. Verse 12.

  1515. Now if their

  1516. trespass,

  1517. right?

  1518. Jewish rejection

  1519. of the gospel,

  1520. means riches

  1521. for the world,

  1522. grace extended

  1523. to the Gentiles,

  1524. and if their

  1525. failure,

  1526. Jewish rejection

  1527. of the gospel,

  1528. means riches

  1529. for the Gentiles,

  1530. grace extended

  1531. to the Gentiles,

  1532. how much more

  1533. will their full

  1534. inclusion mean?

  1535. Salvation to

  1536. Israel.

  1537. So are you

  1538. seeing the

  1539. pattern?

  1540. Here we go

  1541. again.

  1542. Verse 13.

  1543. Now I'm

  1544. speaking to you

  1545. Gentiles.

  1546. Inasmuch then

  1547. as I am an

  1548. apostle to the

  1549. Gentiles,

  1550. I magnify my

  1551. ministry.

  1552. There's the

  1553. grace extended

  1554. to Gentiles,

  1555. in order somehow

  1556. to make my

  1557. fellow Jews

  1558. jealous.

  1559. There's jealousy

  1560. to Israel,

  1561. and thus save

  1562. some of them.

  1563. Salvation to

  1564. Israel.

  1565. Verse 15.

  1566. For if their

  1567. rejection,

  1568. rejection of the

  1569. gospel by the

  1570. Jews,

  1571. means the

  1572. reconciliation

  1573. of the world,

  1574. grace extended

  1575. to the Gentiles,

  1576. what will their

  1577. acceptance mean

  1578. but life from

  1579. the dead?

  1580. Salvation to

  1581. the Jews.

  1582. Verse 25

  1583. and 26.

  1584. Lest you be

  1585. wise in your

  1586. own sight,

  1587. I do not want

  1588. you to be

  1589. unaware of

  1590. this mystery,

  1591. brothers,

  1592. a partial

  1593. hardening has

  1594. come upon

  1595. Israel,

  1596. rejection of

  1597. the gospel

  1598. by Israel,

  1599. until the

  1600. fullness of

  1601. the Gentiles

  1602. has come in,

  1603. extended grace

  1604. to the Gentiles.

  1605. And in this

  1606. way,

  1607. all Israel

  1608. will be

  1609. saved.

  1610. The inclusion,

  1611. the salvation

  1612. of Jews.

  1613. Verse 30

  1614. and 31.

  1615. Let's throw

  1616. those together.

  1617. Yeah,

  1618. I did it up

  1619. there.

  1620. Okay.

  1621. Verse 30

  1622. and 31.

  1623. For just as you

  1624. were at one

  1625. time disobedient

  1626. to God,

  1627. but now have

  1628. received mercy,

  1629. grace to the

  1630. Gentiles,

  1631. because of

  1632. their disobedience,

  1633. rejection of the

  1634. gospel by the

  1635. Jews,

  1636. so they too

  1637. have now been

  1638. disobedient,

  1639. in order that

  1640. by the mercy

  1641. shown to you,

  1642. grace to the

  1643. Gentiles,

  1644. they also may

  1645. now receive

  1646. mercy.

  1647. You see the

  1648. pattern that

  1649. he's establishing

  1650. for us there?

  1651. He's simply

  1652. making this

  1653. argument,

  1654. right?

  1655. That the

  1656. rejection of the

  1657. gospel by the

  1658. Jews has

  1659. caused God's

  1660. grace to extend

  1661. to the Gentiles

  1662. by his

  1663. sovereign plan,

  1664. not like God

  1665. threw a plan

  1666. C in place,

  1667. right?

  1668. By his

  1669. sovereign plan,

  1670. that's how he

  1671. always intended

  1672. for it to be,

  1673. grace extended

  1674. to all peoples,

  1675. praise God,

  1676. were some of

  1677. them,

  1678. right?

  1679. Will cause the

  1680. nation of

  1681. Israel to be

  1682. jealous,

  1683. those who are

  1684. truly worshipping

  1685. their God,

  1686. by the right

  1687. way,

  1688. and they will

  1689. turn to

  1690. Christ.

  1691. Okay?

  1692. So,

  1693. we see this

  1694. continual pattern

  1695. being worked

  1696. through.

  1697. So,

  1698. that all needs

  1699. to be contextually

  1700. tied together,

  1701. right?

  1702. So,

  1703. as he's referred

  1704. in the very

  1705. beginning of

  1706. chapter 11,

  1707. verse 5,

  1708. so at the

  1709. present time

  1710. there is a

  1711. remnant,

  1712. right?

  1713. So,

  1714. what is he

  1715. referring to

  1716. then as he

  1717. says all

  1718. Israel?

  1719. And that's

  1720. why I

  1721. believe he

  1722. means all

  1723. intended

  1724. Israel.

  1725. All of

  1726. those that by

  1727. sovereign purposes

  1728. are meant to

  1729. be saved,

  1730. will be saved

  1731. through this

  1732. process.

  1733. Verse 26,

  1734. I'm proud of

  1735. the ESV.

  1736. I believe it's

  1737. properly rendered

  1738. here,

  1739. and in this

  1740. way.

  1741. Some of

  1742. your

  1743. translations

  1744. might say

  1745. and then,

  1746. right?

  1747. Which has

  1748. in mind

  1749. that once

  1750. the fullness

  1751. of the

  1752. Gentiles has

  1753. come in,

  1754. then this

  1755. thing will

  1756. happen,

  1757. right?

  1758. It's not the

  1759. proper rendering

  1760. of the Greek

  1761. phrase there.

  1762. The proper

  1763. rendering is

  1764. and in this

  1765. way,

  1766. which I

  1767. believe,

  1768. with great

  1769. humility,

  1770. refers to

  1771. the mystery

  1772. that he

  1773. mentions in

  1774. verse 25.

  1775. Lest you

  1776. be wise

  1777. in your

  1778. own sight,

  1779. I want

  1780. you to

  1781. understand

  1782. this

  1783. mystery.

  1784. That this

  1785. is the

  1786. way in

  1787. which God

  1788. is including

  1789. Israel in

  1790. the plans

  1791. of grace.

  1792. He hasn't

  1793. rejected them,

  1794. he hasn't

  1795. cast them

  1796. off entirely,

  1797. he's still

  1798. working amongst

  1799. the people

  1800. of Israel,

  1801. the peoples

  1802. of the world

  1803. and the

  1804. people of

  1805. Israel.

  1806. Verse 30,

  1807. verse 32,

  1808. for just as

  1809. you were at

  1810. one time

  1811. disobedient to

  1812. God but

  1813. now have

  1814. received mercy

  1815. because of

  1816. their

  1817. disobedience,

  1818. so they

  1819. have now

  1820. been

  1821. disobedient

  1822. in order

  1823. that by

  1824. the mercy

  1825. shown to

  1826. you they

  1827. also may

  1828. now receive

  1829. mercy.

  1830. For God

  1831. has consigned

  1832. all to

  1833. disobedience

  1834. that he

  1835. may have

  1836. mercy on

  1837. all.

  1838. We are

  1839. not

  1840. universalists.

  1841. If you

  1842. read this

  1843. out of its

  1844. context,

  1845. you have

  1846. to be.

  1847. If I

  1848. hand you

  1849. just

  1850. verse 32

  1851. and say

  1852. these are

  1853. the scriptures,

  1854. the scripture.

  1855. You read it

  1856. that way,

  1857. you say,

  1858. man,

  1859. God's pretty

  1860. fantastic because

  1861. all people will

  1862. be saved even

  1863. though they're

  1864. all his

  1865. enemies,

  1866. all people,

  1867. it doesn't

  1868. matter.

  1869. It's not

  1870. the case.

  1871. Faith in

  1872. Jesus Christ,

  1873. that's what

  1874. brings to

  1875. us the

  1876. salvation of

  1877. God.

  1878. So contextually

  1879. what is he

  1880. saying?

  1881. What is he

  1882. saying?

  1883. We've all

  1884. been consigned

  1885. to disobedience

  1886. so that he

  1887. can have

  1888. mercy on

  1889. all kinds

  1890. of people,

  1891. Jews,

  1892. and

  1893. Gentiles.

  1894. So why?

  1895. Why?

  1896. Why does

  1897. he tell us

  1898. all this?

  1899. What is

  1900. the point?

  1901. And how

  1902. does this

  1903. mean anything

  1904. for our

  1905. lives today?

  1906. Practically.

  1907. Verse 25,

  1908. he says,

  1909. lest you

  1910. be wise

  1911. in your

  1912. own sight.

  1913. And in

  1914. this case,

  1915. he is

  1916. referring to

  1917. the Gentiles.

  1918. He has

  1919. turned and

  1920. began speaking

  1921. to them in

  1922. verse 13.

  1923. He says,

  1924. now I'm

  1925. speaking to

  1926. you Gentiles.

  1927. And he

  1928. actually has

  1929. already brought

  1930. some correction

  1931. that the

  1932. Gentiles might

  1933. understand who

  1934. they are,

  1935. wild olive

  1936. trees being

  1937. branched,

  1938. being grafted

  1939. in to the

  1940. holy root,

  1941. the root

  1942. that is

  1943. the nation,

  1944. the peoples

  1945. of Israel.

  1946. Lest you

  1947. be wise

  1948. in your own

  1949. sight,

  1950. there is a

  1951. history in

  1952. the Christian

  1953. church of

  1954. anti-Semitism,

  1955. a history

  1956. of it,

  1957. of Christian

  1958. Gentiles looking

  1959. down their

  1960. noses at

  1961. Jews because

  1962. they were

  1963. the people

  1964. that killed

  1965. the Messiah.

  1966. It's prevalent

  1967. still today,

  1968. it certainly

  1969. existed in

  1970. the first

  1971. century church,

  1972. judging those

  1973. who had

  1974. originally

  1975. received these

  1976. benefits and

  1977. had rejected

  1978. Christ,

  1979. looking down

  1980. their noses

  1981. at them.

  1982. I don't

  1983. really think

  1984. that's a

  1985. problem for

  1986. any of us

  1987. in this

  1988. room.

  1989. I don't

  1990. think any

  1991. of us

  1992. really have

  1993. a disdain

  1994. for anybody

  1995. who said,

  1996. yeah,

  1997. I'm of

  1998. Jewish descent,

  1999. we've in

  2000. any way in

  2001. our minds

  2002. think,

  2003. you killed

  2004. the Messiah.

  2005. I don't

  2006. think any

  2007. of us

  2008. have that

  2009. issue in

  2010. our lives,

  2011. but we

  2012. just may

  2013. have a

  2014. superiority

  2015. complex.

  2016. We just

  2017. may still

  2018. think that

  2019. we're better

  2020. because somehow

  2021. we figured

  2022. it out.

  2023. See,

  2024. crazy Jews,

  2025. you guys

  2026. know the

  2027. Old Testament

  2028. and it

  2029. points to

  2030. Christ.

  2031. You had

  2032. all these

  2033. benefits,

  2034. all these

  2035. blessings,

  2036. you have

  2037. all these

  2038. national

  2039. holidays

  2040. that are

  2041. supposed to

  2042. show you

  2043. Jesus and

  2044. you miss

  2045. the point.

  2046. But I

  2047. got it

  2048. because I

  2049. am pretty

  2050. darn smart.

  2051. Lest we

  2052. become wise

  2053. in our own

  2054. sight,

  2055. that's what

  2056. he's saying

  2057. to us.

  2058. Recognize,

  2059. church,

  2060. that God

  2061. has consigned

  2062. all the

  2063. disobedience

  2064. that he

  2065. might have

  2066. mercy on

  2067. all.

  2068. That our

  2069. understanding,

  2070. our realization,

  2071. even though we

  2072. didn't have

  2073. all these

  2074. benefits,

  2075. is all

  2076. the work

  2077. of grace.

  2078. It's all

  2079. mercy.

  2080. It's all

  2081. the display

  2082. of his

  2083. loving kindness

  2084. toward us.

  2085. And we

  2086. have no

  2087. reason to

  2088. boast in

  2089. anything but

  2090. the cross

  2091. of Christ,

  2092. in anything

  2093. but our

  2094. God who

  2095. has saved

  2096. us.

  2097. we

  2098. ought to

  2099. be humble

  2100. and present

  2101. ourselves

  2102. as such

  2103. to the

  2104. world.

  2105. This

  2106. truth that

  2107. Paul has

  2108. presented to

  2109. us,

  2110. whether he's

  2111. speaking about

  2112. final things

  2113. in all

  2114. Israel or

  2115. the case

  2116. that I've

  2117. made to

  2118. you today,

  2119. speaks of

  2120. the nature

  2121. of God.

  2122. We ought to

  2123. turn our

  2124. hearts to

  2125. praise him

  2126. because we

  2127. see another

  2128. example,

  2129. just one

  2130. other example,

  2131. of God's

  2132. goodness and

  2133. loving kindness

  2134. to people

  2135. who do

  2136. not deserve

  2137. it,

  2138. who have

  2139. rejected him

  2140. at every

  2141. turn,

  2142. who have

  2143. willfully

  2144. sinned

  2145. against him,

  2146. who have

  2147. said to

  2148. God,

  2149. you are

  2150. my enemy

  2151. and I

  2152. hate you.

  2153. It's another

  2154. picture of

  2155. God's

  2156. goodness to

  2157. his people,

  2158. including the

  2159. peoples of

  2160. Israel,

  2161. the nation.

  2162. God continues

  2163. to love

  2164. and to love

  2165. and to love,

  2166. beckon people

  2167. to himself.

  2168. It's the

  2169. picture in

  2170. Hosea of

  2171. when Gomer

  2172. gets kind of

  2173. cast out of

  2174. the city and

  2175. God talks

  2176. about alluring

  2177. his wife

  2178. back to

  2179. himself,

  2180. this constant

  2181. picture of

  2182. God's goodness

  2183. and loving

  2184. kindness.

  2185. It ought to

  2186. cause us to

  2187. praise him.

  2188. And those two

  2189. things should tie

  2190. together,

  2191. our humility,

  2192. our understanding,

  2193. our right

  2194. understanding that

  2195. the gospel of

  2196. grace is still

  2197. being extended to

  2198. the people of

  2199. Israel as well

  2200. as the nations

  2201. and this immense

  2202. view of God's

  2203. love for the

  2204. world that should

  2205. move us to

  2206. evangelism.

  2207. God's

  2208. love for the

  2209. people of

  2210. God's

  2211. love for the

  2212. people of

  2213. the world,

  2214. including

  2215. Jewish peoples.

  2216. The church of

  2217. Christ should be

  2218. actively pursuing

  2219. Jewish people,

  2220. Israel.

  2221. We should be

  2222. going after

  2223. them.

  2224. Why?

  2225. Because they'll

  2226. be made

  2227. jealous.

  2228. God's working

  2229. in their hearts

  2230. to see that

  2231. by his grace,

  2232. we know why.

  2233. Why the

  2234. temple?

  2235. Why the

  2236. sacrifice?

  2237. Why the

  2238. patriarchs?

  2239. We understand

  2240. the prophets.

  2241. What were they

  2242. talking about?

  2243. We get all

  2244. that because we

  2245. know the

  2246. Messiah of

  2247. whom they all

  2248. spoke and we

  2249. ought to be

  2250. active and

  2251. seeking to

  2252. bring the

  2253. gospel to

  2254. the nation

  2255. of Israel.

  2256. And so that's

  2257. what it means

  2258. to us in

  2259. this large

  2260. academic pursuit

  2261. of patterns of

  2262. words.

  2263. That's how it

  2264. comes down and

  2265. it comes home

  2266. for us.

  2267. We should

  2268. have no

  2269. disdain,

  2270. no superiority

  2271. complex over

  2272. the Jews

  2273. because they

  2274. are people

  2275. like us

  2276. separated from

  2277. the grace of

  2278. God by their

  2279. sin and they

  2280. need him and

  2281. they need

  2282. messengers to

  2283. carry the

  2284. gospel to

  2285. them.

  2286. And if we

  2287. rightly understand

  2288. who we are

  2289. and we rightly

  2290. understand who

  2291. God is,

  2292. this will

  2293. happen.

  2294. This will

  2295. flow out of

  2296. us.

  2297. So as we

  2298. pump academics

  2299. into our

  2300. heads, it's

  2301. my prayer that

  2302. it works its

  2303. way into our

  2304. hearts.

  2305. That we walk

  2306. out of here

  2307. both gladdened

  2308. and abased.

  2309. Glad in who

  2310. our God is,

  2311. his great

  2312. loving kindness

  2313. to us,

  2314. and abased

  2315. because we

  2316. know that we

  2317. were wretched.

  2318. We did not

  2319. deserve the

  2320. love that he's

  2321. lavished on us

  2322. and that ought

  2323. to be such a

  2324. motivating factor

  2325. to share that

  2326. with the world.

  2327. Let's pray.

  2328. Amen.

  2329. Let's pray.
