  1. In my presence, but much more in my absence.

  2. Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

  3. ! For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

  4. Do all things without grumbling or questioning,

  5. that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God, without blemish,

  6. in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation,

  7. among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life,

  8. so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain,

  9. even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith.

  10. I am glad and rejoice with you all.

  11. Likewise, you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

  12. And that's all flowing together.

  13. They're not disconnected, but tonight we're going to talk about just verses 12 and 13,

  14. because that's kind of a loaded two verses I think we could really benefit from.

  15. So at the beginning of chapter 2, if you remember when Swanson taught a few weeks ago

  16. that Paul is calling the Philippians not to live with selfish ambition or conceit or rivalry

  17. because that's what causes division.

  18. That's what causes people to be torn apart in the church.

  19. But he rather calls them to live in love and be united in humility,

  20. which is the fruit of what God does inside of us as believers.

  21. So he calls them to do that, and that's the beginning of chapter 2.

  22. And so when God saves us, he produces a fervent love for the other believers

  23. as well as like a humility before him as God.

  24. And so we live that way.

  25. It binds us together as his people.

  26. And that's verses 1 through 4.

  27. I kind of talk about that.

  28. But then Paul gives us the supreme example of that in Christ in the following verses,

  29. from verses 5 through 11, how Christ dwelt in eternal glory,

  30. but he left the glories of heaven and came to earth as a man and humbled himself,

  31. took on the creator, took on the created, and he lived a life of perfect obedience to the Father

  32. and eventually completed that obedience by dying at the cross.

  33. And because of such an amazing act of love and sacrifice,

  34. God has rewarded Christ with the name that is above all names,

  35. that every knee should bow and every tongue will confess that Christ is Lord.

  36. So that's what Christ's reward will be.

  37. And so that's where we find ourselves after verses 1 through 11.

  38. But now we get into 12 and 13.

  39. And so following that example of Christ,

  40. the example that Christ has left us to walk in in love and humility,

  41. we are by God's power to strive to live as lights in a dark world.

  42. That's where we're going with this later and live by his strength in us.

  43. So if we look at verse 12, we'll see that he calls him to live in continued obedience.

  44. He says,

  45. Therefore, my beloved, as you always have obeyed,

  46. so now, not only as in my presence, but much more in my absence.

  47. And it's such a great joy for those that you have poured your life into,

  48. those that you have discipled or spent a lot of time with,

  49. younger believers in the faith that you've given your life to,

  50. and you've tried to, as it says in 1 Timothy 2,

  51. to take what you've been entrusted with and to pass that on to other faithful men or women

  52. that will be faithful to teach others also.

  53. It's a picture of, like, discipleship.

  54. And so nothing is more encouraging to someone who is making disciples

  55. than seeing those people that they've poured their lives into continue on

  56. and make disciples on their own and remain steadfast for Christ

  57. and giving their lives away to the lost world

  58. and just giving their lives to the church.

  59. As John wrote in 3 John, you don't have to turn there,

  60. everybody said,

  61. For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth,

  62. as indeed you are walking in truth.

  63. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

  64. And it's this idea that, like, it just brings you great joy to hear

  65. that you don't have to be there to babysit them.

  66. Like, I know guys like that that I spend a lot of time with.

  67. Unless I'm there telling them to do it, they're not going to do it.

  68. And they drive me crazy.

  69. So if you just need to smack in the face,

  70. sometimes I'll quit behaving like kids and be men.

  71. And other guys, you think about them, you look at them,

  72. you think, I just don't have to worry about him.

  73. Man, that's encouraging.

  74. He gets this.

  75. He's doing this.

  76. He's being faithful to pass this on.

  77. And so Paul is experiencing that joy that comes from that.

  78. He's like, you're continuing obedience,

  79. even though I'm not there with you physically.

  80. You're pressing on in these things.

  81. And he doesn't have to worry about the Philippian church.

  82. He's excited to hear about what's going on there.

  83. But then in the end of verse 12,

  84. we start getting into a mystery that exists in the Christian life.

  85. And a mystery that we fully don't know how it works,

  86. but it is there.

  87. And it's the mystery of what the Bible would call sanctification.

  88. The mystery of sanctification.

  89. And if you want to spell that,

  90. S-A-N-C-T-I-F-I-C-A-T-I-O-N.

  91. Sanctification.

  92. Big Bible word.

  93. It's not made up.

  94. It's in the Bible.

  95. But in the study of salvation,

  96. which we call in theology,

  97. soteriology,

  98. the study of salvation,

  99. there's a lot of things that we understand to be completely the work of God alone.

  100. Like salvation is nothing that we achieve.

  101. It's not something that we work with God on.

  102. It's something that God has done completely in us.

  103. Salvation.

  104. And I've talked about these terms in the past,

  105. but I don't say these to sound,

  106. whenever Nathan or Chris or myself,

  107. Wes or Swanson,

  108. whenever we use big words,

  109. it's not to sound smart.

  110. It's so you'll remember it because it's different.

  111. You'll be like,

  112. ah,

  113. that word.

  114. You'll remember a concept that's behind it.

  115. So use these words.

  116. But the truth is that salvation is what we would call monergistic.

  117. M-O-N-E-R-G-I-S-T-I-C.

  118. Monergistic,

  119. meaning that it's the work of God alone.

  120. This was a big debate throughout a lot of church history.

  121. That's where others said that salvation was synergistic.

  122. We get the word synergy from two pieces or more,

  123. working together to accomplish something.

  124. We're not synergistic in how I think about salvation here.

  125. We're completely monergistic.

  126. Salvation is the work of God alone.

  127. Things like justification that you read about,

  128. in Scripture,

  129. which is the instantaneous legal act of God,

  130. where he declares a sinner righteous in his sight

  131. because of the work of Christ

  132. and the righteousness of Christ that has been put on him.

  133. That's all the work of God alone.

  134. Regeneration,

  135. we're born again,

  136. and the Holy Spirit imparts to us new spiritual life.

  137. All the work of God.

  138. We don't agree,

  139. or we don't cooperate with God to be born again.

  140. It's the work of God alone.

  141. And the Holy Spirit applies the work of Christ to our lives.

  142. So,

  143. but when we get to sanctification,

  144. it's a little different.

  145. And sanctification,

  146. if you want,

  147. you can go online and find probably four or five different definitions

  148. for what sanctification is.

  149. And they're not all disconnected from each other,

  150. but it's used in a lot of different ways in Scripture.

  151. That's why.

  152. That's why the confusion.

  153. But,

  154. I'll try to give you a definition

  155. that I think is helpful.

  156. It's a progressive,

  157. not instantaneous,

  158. it's a progressive work of God

  159. and man.

  160. So,

  161. it's a synergistic thing.

  162. We work with God

  163. to accomplish this.

  164. The progressive work of God

  165. and man

  166. that makes us

  167. more free

  168. from sin

  169. and more like Christ

  170. in our actual lives,

  171. like right now,

  172. present time.

  173. It's progressive work of God

  174. and man

  175. that makes us

  176. more free from sin

  177. and more like Christ

  178. in our actual lives.

  179. Or,

  180. it's another way,

  181. it's the outworking

  182. of the new life

  183. that is in us

  184. that we've been born again,

  185. we've been regenerated

  186. and sanctification

  187. is the outworking of that

  188. in our actual lives

  189. right now.

  190. And,

  191. it's more of a gradual,

  192. incremental,

  193. spiritual work

  194. that,

  195. of putting the flesh to death

  196. and putting sin to death

  197. in our lives

  198. as we remain here

  199. and putting on

  200. the likeness of Christ

  201. and becoming

  202. who God has actually made us.

  203. And,

  204. so,

  205. we're going to look at

  206. three different things

  207. about sanctification

  208. and they're all right out

  209. of the text tonight.

  210. So,

  211. the first thing,

  212. and they're in the form

  213. of questions,

  214. what is,

  215. first question,

  216. what is the goal

  217. of our sanctification?

  218. And we see that

  219. in verse 12

  220. where it says,

  221. your own salvation.

  222. Okay,

  223. now,

  224. I've hardly,

  225. there's been a lot

  226. of people I know

  227. that have read this

  228. and,

  229. and like,

  230. didn't know how to

  231. interpret that

  232. because they thought

  233. it was saying,

  234. like,

  235. you need to work

  236. to figure out

  237. your salvation,

  238. like,

  239. you need to work

  240. with God

  241. to achieve your salvation.

  242. And,

  243. not really at all

  244. it says,

  245. not even by the

  246. original language,

  247. but just to keep reading

  248. what Paul is saying

  249. around that.

  250. but,

  251. remember that

  252. sanctification itself

  253. is not the goal

  254. of the Christian life.

  255. It's not the,

  256. not the ends.

  257. Our own salvation

  258. is the goal

  259. and the ends

  260. for what we're striving.

  261. So,

  262. though the work

  263. of salvation

  264. is completely God's,

  265. God's alone,

  266. monergistic,

  267. however,

  268. though we have been

  269. fully saved by God

  270. and fully redeemed

  271. by God,

  272. in this life

  273. we never rise

  274. to the totality

  275. of that.

  276. We never fully

  277. get the taste

  278. of fullness

  279. of what is ours

  280. yet in this life

  281. because we still live

  282. in fallen flesh

  283. that's going to die,

  284. like this is going to die.

  285. That's what I see

  286. in my eyes

  287. is not going to

  288. be around forever

  289. and that's the consequences

  290. of sin

  291. in our life.

  292. And,

  293. and even as followers

  294. of Christ,

  295. as you know,

  296. you can still,

  297. you can still experience

  298. like the devastating

  299. effects of sin

  300. in your life.

  301. Pain,

  302. suffering,

  303. fallen to temptation,

  304. that's all things

  305. that we have to deal

  306. with.

  307. So the fullness

  308. of what is ours

  309. in Christ,

  310. what Christ has won

  311. for us,

  312. by his work

  313. is not fully ours

  314. yet.

  315. And there's a lot

  316. of language.

  317. The Bible

  318. says things like

  319. we are saved,

  320. we are being saved,

  321. and we will be saved.

  322. It kind of talks

  323. about it in

  324. three different

  325. tenses.

  326. It'll be a good study

  327. for you to do

  328. sometime.

  329. And so,

  330. God's accomplished

  331. a work

  332. and is being

  333. worked out

  334. in us now

  335. and is going

  336. to be brought

  337. to completion.

  338. And so,

  339. you are in the

  340. process of becoming

  341. what you are.

  342. You're a new

  343. creation,

  344. you're a child

  345. of God.

  346. And so,

  347. when we think

  348. about that,

  349. we are sanctification,

  350. we're becoming

  351. who we are,

  352. we're just kind

  353. of pressing

  354. into the fullness

  355. of who we are

  356. in Christ

  357. in this life.

  358. And so,

  359. when it says

  360. the goal

  361. is our own

  362. salvation,

  363. what I want

  364. you to focus

  365. on,

  366. I guess,

  367. out of that

  368. is that

  369. as children

  370. of God,

  371. it's very,

  372. very easy

  373. to grow weary

  374. in the fight

  375. and want to quit

  376. and just say

  377. this is just

  378. too hard

  379. and I want to quit.

  380. I've been there

  381. all the time.

  382. I'm there

  383. all the time.

  384. And we want

  385. to love Christ

  386. with our heart,

  387. soul,

  388. mind,

  389. and strength,

  390. but we fail

  391. to rise

  392. to the totality

  393. of that.

  394. And it's easy

  395. for us to get

  396. discouraged

  397. and focus

  398. on our problems

  399. and our

  400. shortcomings

  401. and inadequacies

  402. and we constantly

  403. fall into the

  404. same sins,

  405. same temptations

  406. and you just

  407. want to quit.

  408. You're like,

  409. I just can't do this.

  410. I can't reach

  411. what is mine

  412. and you want

  413. to stop.

  414. And so,

  415. this is

  416. calling us

  417. to focus

  418. on what is

  419. ahead of us

  420. which is

  421. our salvation.

  422. It's going

  423. to come

  424. and if we

  425. keep that

  426. in sight,

  427. it'll give us

  428. strength to

  429. keep moving

  430. on.

  431. And while

  432. I was,

  433. I have just

  434. a lot of

  435. hiking analogies,

  436. sorry,

  437. because I'm

  438. not a runner.

  439. I can't

  440. really run

  441. that far.

  442. Most of you

  443. know that

  444. because I'm

  445. a lunger.

  446. And so,

  447. this summer

  448. that I was

  449. climbing,

  450. it was a

  451. mountain in

  452. Northern Ireland

  453. in Donegal

  454. and it was a

  455. pretty tall

  456. mountain.

  457. It was raining,

  458. really,

  459. really misty.

  460. Nothing new

  461. about raining

  462. over there.

  463. And so,

  464. like before

  465. that,

  466. I was just

  467. like so excited,

  468. like jacked up,

  469. like bring

  470. that mountain

  471. on,

  472. you know,

  473. kind of

  474. attitude,

  475. had all the

  476. right gear,

  477. like had

  478. everything ready

  479. to go.

  480. And I was

  481. pretty like

  482. going to

  483. conquer this

  484. mountain kind

  485. of feeling,

  486. you know,

  487. some of you

  488. probably know

  489. what I'm

  490. talking about.

  491. But so,

  492. when I was

  493. climbing up it

  494. though,

  495. like it was

  496. just kicking

  497. my butt.

  498. Like it was

  499. like a lot

  500. of the trail

  501. wasn't really

  502. marked and so

  503. you just kind

  504. of had to

  505. figure it out

  506. and which

  507. means you

  508. would just

  509. go to places

  510. that really

  511. weren't trail

  512. cut at all

  513. and like sink

  514. into mud

  515. and bog

  516. and you

  517. were just,

  518. God,

  519. it was just,

  520. it wore me

  521. out.

  522. And finally,

  523. like we got

  524. a little further

  525. up and,

  526. and the trail

  527. like started

  528. getting,

  529. like you're

  530. like walking

  531. in the mist.

  532. All you could

  533. see was like

  534. maybe five feet

  535. in front of you.

  536. And I knew

  537. that if I went

  538. too far that way,

  539. I would fall

  540. off the mountain.

  541. so it was

  542. getting pretty

  543. treacherous.

  544. and I just

  545. remember asking

  546. my friend

  547. with me,

  548. he was a

  549. pastor that

  550. I know and

  551. really good

  552. friends with

  553. over there

  554. named Ronnie.

  555. He used to

  556. be in the

  557. military and

  558. I asked him,

  559. man,

  560. like are we

  561. there yet?

  562. Like are we,

  563. is this even

  564. close?

  565. And he's like,

  566. oh no,

  567. we're only about

  568. halfway.

  569. And I thought,

  570. oh my gosh,

  571. I'm going to

  572. die.

  573. Like I'm not

  574. going to make

  575. this.

  576. And my heart's

  577. pounding like I'm

  578. just,

  579. you know,

  580. headache and

  581. everything.

  582. And finally,

  583. like the

  584. mess cleared a

  585. little bit and

  586. I could see

  587. the top.

  588. And I thought,

  589. man,

  590. like it's right

  591. there.

  592. And I just

  593. kind of kept

  594. going.

  595. And like seeing

  596. like the end

  597. made me just

  598. want to keep

  599. pressing on.

  600. And I knew

  601. that I was

  602. close to what

  603. was being mine.

  604. And the

  605. Christian life is

  606. like that.

  607. Like we're

  608. told to run

  609. the race with

  610. endurance and

  611. with perseverance

  612. and to keep

  613. before us what's

  614. ours.

  615. Because if you

  616. just focus on

  617. your present

  618. circumstances and

  619. the problems of

  620. the Christian

  621. life,

  622. you just want

  623. to quit.

  624. Like you'll

  625. want to stop.

  626. You have to

  627. keep like your

  628. salvation that

  629. is yours in

  630. Christ.

  631. It says in

  632. Hebrews 10

  633. that Christ has

  634. perfected for

  635. all time those

  636. being sanctified.

  637. Which is like,

  638. what?

  639. It's one of those

  640. verses that is

  641. fully ours.

  642. But we're reaching

  643. out in this life

  644. to become who we

  645. are in Christ.

  646. So the goal of

  647. sanctification is our

  648. salvation.

  649. The second thing,

  650. number two,

  651. okay,

  652. this is that

  653. mystery.

  654. What is our

  655. role in

  656. sanctification?

  657. Yours and

  658. mine,

  659. what is our

  660. role in

  661. sanctification?

  662. And look at

  663. the verse 12,

  664. part of verse 12.

  665. It says,

  666. work out your

  667. own salvation

  668. with fear and

  669. trembling.

  670. In verse 12.

  671. So,

  672. it's not

  673. saying,

  674. what do you

  675. think that

  676. means?

  677. Like,

  678. you can read

  679. that out of

  680. the bat and

  681. think,

  682. wow,

  683. that sounds

  684. like we're

  685. having to

  686. work out

  687. being saved.

  688. I don't

  689. know what

  690. that means.

  691. And it's

  692. not saying,

  693. save yourself,

  694. justify yourself,

  695. adopt yourself,

  696. clean your life

  697. up on your

  698. own,

  699. and hopefully

  700. you'll be

  701. accepted and

  702. be good enough

  703. to be saved

  704. at the very

  705. end.

  706. It's not

  707. kind of what

  708. it's saying

  709. at all.

  710. Not even the

  711. language talks

  712. like that.

  713. But we

  714. all know

  715. that,

  716. as we

  717. said,

  718. salvation is

  719. a work of

  720. God alone.

  721. Paul's taught

  722. in Romans 3,

  723. Romans 4,

  724. Ephesians 2,

  725. the whole book

  726. of Galatians,

  727. that salvation

  728. is completely

  729. by grace.

  730. It's not

  731. something that

  732. we earn.

  733. It's not

  734. something that

  735. we can merit

  736. by being good

  737. or observing

  738. the law.

  739. It's like,

  740. not there.

  741. You can read

  742. the whole New

  743. Testament and

  744. you don't

  745. see that.

  746. And even

  747. the Old

  748. Testament,

  749. they couldn't

  750. keep the law

  751. and so they

  752. were looking

  753. forward to a

  754. Messiah who

  755. would come

  756. and save them

  757. from their sin.

  758. And so what

  759. it is saying

  760. though,

  761. what it is

  762. saying where

  763. it says work

  764. out your

  765. salvation with

  766. fear and

  767. trembling,

  768. it says that

  769. we are to be

  770. active in our

  771. own salvation.

  772. We are to

  773. become what

  774. God has

  775. already made

  776. us.

  777. We're to

  778. press into the

  779. fullness of

  780. what that is.

  781. Greek there

  782. really means

  783. to carry out

  784. or to bring

  785. to completion

  786. something that

  787. has already

  788. started inside

  789. of you.

  790. That's what

  791. it really is

  792. implying.

  793. So,

  794. really,

  795. really cool

  796. thing.

  797. So in

  798. light of that,

  799. God has

  800. started this

  801. work in us.

  802. He saved us.

  803. He's made us a

  804. new creation.

  805. We're adopted

  806. children of God.

  807. We have a new

  808. identity.

  809. In light of

  810. all that,

  811. now it's like

  812. God is saying,

  813. now just live,

  814. press into the

  815. fullness of who

  816. you actually are

  817. in Christ.

  818. Become what

  819. you are.

  820. Get rid of the

  821. old and put on

  822. the new.

  823. This is who you

  824. are.

  825. No longer walk

  826. contrary to

  827. your new

  828. identity in

  829. Christ.

  830. And Martin

  831. Luther said

  832. this.

  833. He said,

  834. this life,

  835. therefore,

  836. is not

  837. righteousness,

  838. but growth

  839. and righteousness,

  840. not health,

  841. but healing,

  842. not being

  843. but becoming,

  844. not rest,

  845. but exercise.

  846. We are not

  847. yet what we

  848. shall be,

  849. but we are

  850. growing towards

  851. it.

  852. The process

  853. is not yet

  854. finished,

  855. but it is

  856. going on.

  857. And this is

  858. not the end,

  859. but the road

  860. is ahead of

  861. us.

  862. All does

  863. not yet

  864. gleam in

  865. glory,

  866. but yet is

  867. being purified.

  868. So it's

  869. this process

  870. of how we're

  871. to work

  872. and toil

  873. and strive

  874. in this

  875. life.

  876. And so

  877. flip over

  878. to

  879. Colossians 3.

  880. I'll show

  881. you a verse

  882. there.

  883. But if you

  884. remember that

  885. man was

  886. originally

  887. created

  888. in the image

  889. of God,

  890. he was to

  891. mirror forward

  892. to reflect

  893. who God

  894. was,

  895. God's holy

  896. character,

  897. God's dominion

  898. and rule

  899. over the

  900. earth.

  901. Man was

  902. to be the

  903. image bearer

  904. of God.

  905. And sin

  906. destroyed that,

  907. we know.

  908. We know that

  909. sin,

  910. after the fall,

  911. after Genesis

  912. 3,

  913. is what we

  914. call the

  915. shattered image

  916. of God

  917. because of

  918. sin.

  919. And so

  920. since then,

  921. God has

  922. been in the

  923. process of

  924. reconciling man

  925. to himself.

  926. And Christ

  927. came in one

  928. way that when

  929. we're saved,

  930. we're born

  931. again,

  932. we become a

  933. new creation,

  934. we are

  935. again able

  936. to reflect the

  937. glory of our

  938. creator like we

  939. should.

  940. That's what's

  941. being done,

  942. like that image

  943. is being

  944. restored.

  945. So if you

  946. look at

  947. Colossians 3

    Colossians 3:8

  948. verse 8,

  949. just an

  950. example,

  951. he says,

  952. do not

  953. lie to one

  954. another,

  955. seeing that

  956. you have

  957. put off

  958. the old

  959. self with

  960. its practices

  961. and have

  962. put on

  963. the new,

  964. which is

  965. being renewed

  966. in the

  967. knowledge

  968. after the

  969. image of

  970. its creator.

  971. So this

  972. idea that

  973. that's the

  974. image of

  975. putting it

  976. on or

  977. taking it

  978. off and

  979. putting on

  980. clothes is

  981. what that

  982. is saying.

  983. This is

  984. who we

  985. are and

  986. we're being

  987. renewed,

  988. being like

  989. in the

  990. process of

  991. becoming like

  992. we originally

  993. were intended

  994. to be,

  995. image bearers

  996. of God,

  997. like the

  998. perfect image

  999. bearers of

  1000. God.

  1001. And we all

  1002. know that

  1003. Christ came

  1004. here and

  1005. showed us

  1006. what a

  1007. perfect image

  1008. bearing life

  1009. looked like.

  1010. He showed

  1011. us what a

  1012. life completely

  1013. devoted to

  1014. and obedient

  1015. to the

  1016. Father looked

  1017. like.

  1018. and so

  1019. since he

  1020. is that

  1021. apex of

  1022. what that

  1023. is,

  1024. that's

  1025. what we're

  1026. told in

  1027. Romans,

  1028. we are to

  1029. become the

  1030. image of

  1031. Christ who

  1032. is the

  1033. image of

  1034. God,

  1035. to press

  1036. into that.

  1037. So

  1038. we're going to

  1039. talk some

  1040. more about

  1041. our role,

  1042. but I'm just

  1043. going to keep

  1044. moving on.

  1045. Where it

  1046. says fear and

  1047. trembling,

  1048. you might be

  1049. like,

  1050. what's up

  1051. with that?

  1052. Like,

  1053. if God's

  1054. our Father

  1055. and we're

  1056. saved,

  1057. like,

  1058. why are we

  1059. fearing,

  1060. why do we

  1061. need to be

  1062. in fear and

  1063. trembling?

  1064. And,

  1065. do you think

  1066. it means

  1067. we should be

  1068. utterly terrified

  1069. and depressed

  1070. and unconfident

  1071. and jittery

  1072. like in the

  1073. presence of

  1074. God,

  1075. like a lot

  1076. of people

  1077. might think?

  1078. No,

  1079. but in

  1080. Scripture,

  1081. it's filled

  1082. with like,

  1083. this image

  1084. of how a

  1085. godly person

  1086. has a fear

  1087. of the Lord.

  1088. Like the

  1089. Old Testament

  1090. says this

  1091. kind of stuff

  1092. a lot,

  1093. like even

  1094. in the beginning

  1095. of Proverbs

  1096. it says,

  1097. the fear

  1098. of the Lord

  1099. is the

  1100. beginning

  1101. of wisdom,

  1102. the fear

  1103. of the Lord

  1104. is the

  1105. beginning

  1106. of knowledge.

  1107. This is what

  1108. it says,

  1109. a godly man

  1110. fears the

  1111. Lord.

  1112. And,

  1113. so Paul is

  1114. simply saying

  1115. that we're,

  1116. as we continue

  1117. to follow Christ

  1118. and joyful

  1119. obedience,

  1120. that we're

  1121. working out

  1122. our sanctification,

  1123. we're to live

  1124. like in reverent

  1125. humility

  1126. towards the

  1127. living God.

  1128. And,

  1129. in sanctification,

  1130. like,

  1131. it's like having

  1132. a healthy fear

  1133. of offending

  1134. God or hurting

  1135. God,

  1136. in a righteous

  1137. awe and respect

  1138. of Him,

  1139. we don't just

  1140. kind of throw

  1141. that part of

  1142. God away,

  1143. He's God.

  1144. Like,

  1145. He is our

  1146. Father and we

  1147. can come to

  1148. Him and call

  1149. Him Abba,

  1150. but He's not

  1151. just like another

  1152. earthly father,

  1153. like He's God

  1154. Almighty.

  1155. I mean,

  1156. read just the

  1157. encounters of

  1158. Moses on Mount

  1159. Sinai with God

  1160. or any man

  1161. that, like,

  1162. encountered God

  1163. in the Scripture

  1164. and there was

  1165. like a sense

  1166. of reverence

  1167. and awe

  1168. and fear

  1169. and trembling

  1170. and not just,

  1171. Jesus is my

  1172. homeboy,

  1173. like,

  1174. let me prop

  1175. my feet up

  1176. in the presence

  1177. of God

  1178. and have a

  1179. cigar with Him,

  1180. like,

  1181. not that kind

  1182. of image.

  1183. and it's a

  1184. healthy knowledge

  1185. of, like,

  1186. knowing that

  1187. God is God

  1188. and that God

  1189. could,

  1190. He holds your

  1191. very life in

  1192. His hands

  1193. and it's like

  1194. a reverent fear,

  1195. like you might

  1196. have,

  1197. like some of you

  1198. might have

  1199. for somebody

  1200. in your life,

  1201. maybe your

  1202. father or

  1203. something,

  1204. that where

  1205. you know He

  1206. loves you,

  1207. you know He

  1208. would die for

  1209. you,

  1210. He provides

  1211. for you,

  1212. but you know

  1213. also He

  1214. could put it

  1215. on you,

  1216. like discipline

  1217. you in a

  1218. second if He

  1219. needed to.

  1220. I have that

  1221. about my

  1222. dad.

  1223. So,

  1224. turn to

  1225. Hebrews 12

  1226. real fast,

  1227. I'll show you

  1228. an example

  1229. of this.

  1230. Hebrews 12

    Hebrews 12:28

  1231. verse 28

  1232. As we

  1233. revere God

  1234. and look to

  1235. Him as God,

  1236. it will cultivate

  1237. a humility in

  1238. us.

  1239. And remember

  1240. what we've

  1241. been reading

  1242. in Philippians

  1243. about living

  1244. in humility

  1245. towards one

  1246. another.

  1247. And how you

  1248. do that is

  1249. by looking

  1250. to God.

  1251. Hebrews 12

    Hebrews 12:28

  1252. verse 28

  1253. says this,

  1254. He's talking

  1255. to the

  1256. believers and

  1257. He says,

  1258. Therefore let

  1259. us be

  1260. grateful for

  1261. receiving a

  1262. kingdom that

  1263. cannot be

  1264. shaken.

  1265. That's awesome.

  1266. And then He

  1267. says,

  1268. And thus let

  1269. us offer to

  1270. God acceptable

  1271. worship with

  1272. reverence and

  1273. awe, for our

  1274. God is a

  1275. consuming fire.

  1276. It's that

  1277. idea of like,

  1278. man, we have

  1279. a kingdom with

  1280. Him, we belong

  1281. to Him, we have

  1282. a salvation in

  1283. Him, but let

  1284. us live in

  1285. reverence and

  1286. awe of Him.

  1287. And why?

  1288. Because our

  1289. God is a

  1290. consuming fire.

  1291. This idea that

  1292. God is God

  1293. and He should

  1294. humble us to

  1295. be in His

  1296. presence.

  1297. So a quick

  1298. answer.

  1299. I want you to

  1300. remember that it's

  1301. like statement

  1302. one, I'm going to

  1303. have statement

  1304. two in the next

  1305. question.

  1306. Statement one,

  1307. as far as our

  1308. role in

  1309. sanctification,

  1310. salvation, we

  1311. are called to

  1312. be faithful,

  1313. obedient, to

  1314. labor, and

  1315. toil in the

  1316. work of living

  1317. godly lives,

  1318. like we are.

  1319. We're to work,

  1320. labor, toil, be

  1321. faithful, obedient.

  1322. That is our

  1323. responsibility, that's

  1324. what we're called

  1325. to do.

  1326. And remember

  1327. that, that's

  1328. statement one.

  1329. Moving into the

  1330. next part, question

  1331. three.

  1332. And hold your

  1333. hand in Hebrews,

  1334. we're going to

  1335. go back there,

  1336. but go back to

  1337. Philippians.

  1338. Question three

  1339. is, what is the

  1340. Holy Spirit's

  1341. role in

  1342. sanctification?

  1343. What is the

  1344. Holy Spirit's

  1345. role in

  1346. sanctification?

  1347. Verse 13,

  1348. back in

  1349. Philippians,

  1350. for it is God

  1351. who works in

  1352. you, both to

  1353. will and to

  1354. work for His

  1355. good pleasure.

  1356. Okay, now,

  1357. there you go,

  1358. there's the

  1359. mystery.

  1360. Go out there,

  1361. and go for it,

  1362. but know what?

  1363. It's God at

  1364. work in you,

  1365. His will, and

  1366. to work for His

  1367. good pleasure.

  1368. And this is the

  1369. mystery.

  1370. And so, since

  1371. God has brought

  1372. salvation to us,

  1373. He's not now

  1374. left us on our

  1375. own to work out

  1376. the Christian

  1377. life.

  1378. He's not, He's

  1379. not done that.

  1380. God has saved

  1381. us, and now we're

  1382. on our own.

  1383. Like, it doesn't

  1384. work that way.

  1385. Like, I've done

  1386. my part by

  1387. saving you, and

  1388. now you need to

  1389. do your part to

  1390. straighten yourself

  1391. up, get your

  1392. life straight.

  1393. It's not how it

  1394. works.

  1395. We have that

  1396. idea that, you

  1397. know, it's me and

  1398. Jesus mentality, and

  1399. like, I can, I'm on

1400. my own, and I thank

1401. Him for what He did,

1402. but now I can work

1403. this out on my own.

  1404. If you remember in

  1405. the book of Galatians,

  1406. they did the same

  1407. thing.

  1408. They began to forget,

  1409. like, how they were

1410. saved, which was by the

1411. grace of God and by

  1412. God's power.

  1413. God's power, and

  1414. Paul says to them,

  1415. having begun by the

  1416. Spirit, or by the

  1417. Spirit's power, are you

  1418. now being perfected by

  1419. your flesh, by working

  1420. on your own?

  1421. He calls them you

  1422. foolish Galatians.

  1423. It's like, he's kind

  1424. of like, don't forget,

  1425. like, God started this

1426. work in you, and he's

  1427. continuing it right

  1428. now.

1429. And, jump back over to

1430. Hebrews, and go over to

  1431. chapter 13, and show

  1432. you something else.

1433. He has given us the

  1434. Holy Spirit to energize

1435. us to live godly lives,

1436. to give us the strength

  1437. we need.

  1438. Hebrews 13, verse 20,

    Hebrews 13:20

  1439. it says this,

1440. Now may the God of

  1441. peace, who brought

  1442. again from the dead

  1443. our Lord Jesus, the

  1444. great shepherd of the

1445. sheep, by the blood of

  1446. the eternal covenant,

  1447. all right, now, may

  1448. Christ do this.

  1449. It says, verse 21,

  1450. equip you with every

1451. good that you may do

  1452. his will, working in

  1453. us that which is

  1454. pleasing in his sight,

  1455. through Jesus Christ,

  1456. to whom glory, belong

  1457. glory forever.

  1458. Amen.

  1459. So, see that?

  1460. Like, it's this idea,

  1461. like how Christ did

  1462. this, and now he's

  1463. continuing this work

  1464. inside of us, equipping

1465. us with every good work

1466. so we may do his will,

1467. working in us so that

1468. it would be pleasing in

  1469. his sight.

1470. It's this idea that God

1471. is now in us, and

  1472. working in us.

  1473. This is the Holy

  1474. Spirit.

  1475. So though we're

  1476. responsible for being

  1477. obedient and being

  1478. responsible and stepping

1479. out of the faith, but it's

1480. not by our own strength

  1481. that we do, it's God's

  1482. strength that's going to

1483. be working in us, and it's

  1484. God's grace, God's power,

  1485. God's energy that enables

1486. us to live the Christian

  1487. life.

  1488. And guess what?

  1489. It pleases the Father.

  1490. It pleases the Father.

1491. And let's jump back to

  1492. Philippians again.

1493. The second part of that,

  1494. verse 13 in Philippians,

1495. where it says, to work for

  1496. his good pleasure.

1497. So, as we live upright lives

1498. and we're obedient and we

1499. follow Christ, it brings joy

1500. and delight to our Father to

  1501. see that.

1502. He's not like we have to earn

1503. his salvation or he's going

1504. to love us more or love us

  1505. less, depending on how

  1506. obedient we are.

1507. It just means that he takes

1508. delight when he sees his

  1509. children walking in the

1510. truth, when he sees his

  1511. children living as they

  1512. ought to live.

1513. I've heard of many stories

1514. of fathers who have delighted

1515. in hearing that the stuff

1516. that they put into their

1517. children at a young age is

1518. now being tested by, you

  1519. know, girls and guys

  1520. tempting their children to

1521. be sexually active or to

1522. live a certain kind of

  1523. lifestyle and they hold

1524. fast to like what they

  1525. learned from their parents

1526. and it brings great joy to

  1527. their parents and encourage

1528. them to see God's work

1529. inside of them and they're

1530. holding on to what they

1531. were taught and in the midst

  1532. of trial and temptation.

1533. And so whenever, I mean,

1534. think about how God spoke

1535. about Christ when Christ was,

  1536. he resisted the temptation

  1537. in the wilderness.

1538. He pressed on when he was

  1539. baptized and then again,

  1540. the transfiguration, he

  1541. said this same thing.

1542. He said, this is my beloved

1543. son with whom I'm well

  1544. pleased.

1545. This idea of how he just

1546. delights in seeing us walk

  1547. in the truth.

1548. He doesn't hate us when we

1549. mess up, but it just brings

1550. him joy to see us walking

  1551. in the truth.

  1552. It's for God's good

  1553. pleasure.

1554. And so, so statement two,

1555. I told you statement one,

  1556. the last question, number

  1557. three.

  1558. So where's the Holy Spirit's

  1559. role in sanctification?

1560. And here's the answer for

  1561. statement two.

1562. As we step out in faith and

  1563. obedience, the Holy Spirit

  1564. will empower, encourage,

1565. guide, and comfort us to live

  1566. godly lives.

  1567. All right.

1568. As we step out in faith and

1569. obedience, the Holy Spirit is

  1570. faithful to empower, encourage,

1571. guide, and comfort us to live

  1572. godly lives.

1573. This is what he does.

1574. He gives us the strength to do

  1575. it.

  1576. So jumping into some

  1577. application of this, that's

1578. the three questions and that's

1579. kind of walking through the

  1580. text.

1581. But bringing your group, Tom,

  1582. you're going to have a question

  1583. about this.

  1584. So listen carefully.

1585. There's, I see, at least in my

1586. own life, in the lives of

1587. others, two camps of people

1588. that kind of can be on one

  1589. extreme or the other.

1590. And one camp is like the

  1591. working camp.

1592. And they believe this idea that

1593. go out there and get busy.

1594. God did all this work for you.

1595. Now you need to go out there and

1596. get really busy for him and you

1597. need to work hard and do all

  1598. this stuff.

  1599. He's dependent on you.

1600. Come on, go out there and do

  1601. something big for God.

1602. It's all up to you, so get it

  1603. done.

1604. That kind of attitude is if it

1605. just all was on your shoulders

1606. and like God has an employment

1607. problem and he needs people to

1608. go out there and get busy and

  1609. start working.

1610. And you need to realize like no,

1611. like God needs no man.

1612. Even people who are in rare

1613. conditions, I know that something

  1614. happened to me.

1615. It wouldn't be the end of the

  1616. world.

1617. God will continue the work.

1618. He could raise up ten of me if

  1619. he wanted to.

1620. The same thing within global

  1621. missions.

1622. Like God could raise up as many

1623. people as he wanted to, but this

1624. idea that God needs us for

  1625. something is not appropriate.

1626. God can do as he will.

1627. It says in Acts that God is not

1628. served by human hands as though he

  1629. needed anything.

1630. And so he's invited us to be a part

1631. of what he is doing.

1632. And if you live in that camp, you're

1633. usually going to end up just very

1634. whipped, burned out and tired because

1635. you're trying to work in your own

1636. strength all the time and your own

1637. skills and your own talents and you're

1638. just going to burn out.

1639. And you love like the hype about the

1640. Christian life, but you rush out there

1641. and before you know it, you're wiped

  1642. out.

1643. And, you know, I've been also hiking

1644. with some people who, who, one guy

1645. used to teach here a little bit.

1646. We'd go out and buy like all the best

  1647. gear, all the stuff.

1648. And then he would go out there and he

  1649. hated it.

1650. Like he would just like want to quit,

  1651. want to turn back.

1652. We're like, no, bro, you got to keep

  1653. going.

1654. And he was all excited about it, but

1655. he was just trying to, he didn't really

1656. understand why there was something

1657. behind it that kind of pushed us on.

1658. That was like our love for what we did.

1659. And so the second camp is, is this camp.

1660. Let completely go and let God.

  1661. Now I understand there's a measure of

1662. truth to that, but it depends on which

1663. way you're implying that truth.

1664. But let completely go and let God.

1665. And, and it's this idea of like, well,

1666. if it's all God's power inside of us,

1667. is God a sovereign, if God is going to

1668. give us the strength of the Christian

1669. life, he can just, if he wants to get

1670. me off the couch, he can just get me

  1671. off the couch.

1672. If I, I'm just going to sit here and

1673. wait for something to happen.

1674. Like, hope he just hits me with a wave

  1675. of emotion.

1676. And then all of a sudden I'm going to

1677. get up and do something.

1678. This idea that you're just waiting for

1679. God to ignite something in you.

1680. And he doesn't need me.

1681. So I just sit here until he does.

1682. And he'll just do something really

1683. dramatic and emotional and I'll get

1684. off my butt and be obedient.

1685. That's the other extreme idea, like

1686. the lazy boy of grace kind of idea.

1687. And so let's marry those two

  1688. statements together.

1689. The two statements I mentioned

  1690. earlier.

1691. So the first statement, we're called to

1692. be faithful and obedient, to labor and

1693. toil and live in godly lives.

1694. And the second statement, as we step

1695. out in faith and obedience, the Holy

1696. Spirit will empower us and give us the

1697. strength and energy and the will, the

1698. desire to live godly lives.

1699. And the mysteries, you'll see these right

1700. beside each other in Scripture.

1701. And we're going to turn to two examples

  1702. of that.

1703. first one in Colossians chapter one.

1704. Go to Colossians chapter one.

1705. You need to see like how these are just right

  1706. beside each other.

1707. It's not saying one or the other.

1708. It's saying how both of these work

  1709. simultaneously together.

1710. Colossians one and go to,

  1711. let's see,

  1712. verse 11 first.

  1713. Colossians one verse 11.

  1714. And he says,

1715. May you be strengthened with all power

1716. according to his glorious might for all

1717. endurance and patience and joy, giving

1718. thanks to the Father who has qualified you

1719. to share in the inheritance of the saints

  1720. in light.

1721. First part, jump down to verse 27,

  1722. same chapter.

1723. To them, God chose to make known how great

1724. among the Gentiles are the riches of the

1725. glory of this mystery, which is Christ in

1726. you the hope of glory.

1727. Him we proclaim, warning everyone

1728. and teaching everyone with all wisdom

1729. so that we present everyone mature in Christ.

  1730. That's what I'm talking about.

1731. You know, I get out there and get busy,

1732. get busy teaching, get busy warning,

  1733. proclaiming.

1734. We want to make everybody mature.

  1735. That's that camp.

1736. And then look at verse 29.

  1737. For this I toil.

  1738. There you go.

  1739. Labor.

  1740. Labor.

1741. Struggling with all his energy

1742. that he powerfully works within me.

  1743. There's the other part.

  1744. See that?

  1745. It's like this idea.

  1746. And last example.

  1747. This one's a great one.

1748. It's the last place you have to turn.

  1749. 1 Corinthians 15.

  1750. Jump over to that.

  1751. 1 Corinthians 15, verse 9.

    1 Corinthians 15:9

  1752. 1 Corinthians 15, verse 9.

    1 Corinthians 15:9

1753. Paul kind of giving a defense of his ministry

  1754. to the Corinthian church.

1755. He says in verse 9,

1756. For I am the least of the apostles,

1757. unworthy to be called an apostle,

1758. because I persecuted the church of God,

1759. a reference to his old life.

1760. But the grace of God,

  1761. excuse me,

1762. by the grace of God,

  1763. I am who I am.

1764. And his grace towards me

  1765. was not in vain.

  1766. Listen to this.

  1767. On the contrary,

1768. I worked harder than any of them.

  1769. See that?

1770. Got there and worked hard.

  1771. I worked really hard.

  1772. Paul saying,

1773. Though it was not I,

1774. but the grace of God that is in me.

1775. Whether then it was I or they,

1776. so we preach and so we believe.

  1777. So,

  1778. I worked hard.

  1779. I was out there

1780. pouring my blood, sweat, and tears out for you guys.

  1781. But guess what?

1782. It was the power of God.

1783. It was the grace of God working in me

  1784. as I did that.

  1785. So,

1786. we step out in obedience

1787. and we cling to God.

  1788. We beg him

1789. to give us what we need

1790. to live the Christian life.

  1791. And that's the mystery

  1792. that is there.

1793. We clearly have a part.

1794. We need to be responsible.

1795. God will hold us accountable

  1796. for being disobedient.

1797. He's not going to say,

  1798. Well,

1799. we can't plead that cause with God.

  1800. Like,

1801. You just didn't give me the strength to do it, God.

  1802. He's going to say,

  1803. You weren't obedient.

1804. You didn't step out in obedience.

  1805. And,

1806. we'll be consequences for our actions.

  1807. But,

1808. but as we step out,

  1809. it's God's work

1810. and He'll get the glory for it.

  1811. Hudson Taylor,

  1812. missionary to China,

  1813. awesome guy,

  1814. he wrote,

  1815. God's work done in God's way

1816. will never lack God's supplies.

  1817. So,

  1818. we,

  1819. we step out

  1820. and we work,

1821. God will provide for us.

  1822. God's work done in God's way

1823. will never lack God's supplies.

  1824. Hudson Taylor,

  1825. St. Augustine,

  1826. 5th century,

  1827. he goes,

1828. this is what he said,

1829. work as if everything depended on you

1830. and pray as if everything depended on God.

  1831. And,

1832. he wasn't saying it depends on you,

  1833. he's like just saying,

  1834. work,

  1835. as if it did,

1836. but at the same time,

  1837. pray in humble recognition

1838. that you need God's grace.

1839. Augustine said a long time ago,

  1840. God,

  1841. you know,

  1842. command what you will,

1843. command us to do what you will,

1844. but give us the grace to command,

1845. or give us the grace to,

  1846. to follow those commands.

  1847. And so,

  1848. I remember,

  1849. back in Philippians,

  1850. the first message,

  1851. I think,

  1852. of this,

  1853. this series in Philippians,

  1854. Philippians 1.6,

  1855. let this encourage you,

1856. that God has promised to finish this work.

  1857. He said,

  1858. Paul said,

  1859. I'm sure this,

1860. he who began the good work in you

1861. will bring it to completion

1862. at the day of Christ Jesus.

  1863. That's Philippians 1.6.

  1864. He began it,

1865. he will bring it to completion.

1866. He's not going to just stop

  1867. and abandon the work

  1868. that he started.

1869. He's going to finish it.

  1870. And so,

  1871. in conclusion,

  1872. I have a,

1873. kind of a little brief story here

1874. that I was going to read to you.

  1875. There's a,

  1876. there's a pastor,

  1877. an awesome guy,

1878. Presbyterian dude named Harry Reeder.

1879. Some of you went to New Year's conference last year

  1880. at campus outreach.

  1881. He spoke there.

1882. He was the older guy that spoke there.

  1883. He said,

1884. and really loves the Lord.

  1885. And,

  1886. he told a story

  1887. about relating how

1888. God's power works within us

  1889. and that we have,

  1890. we are,

  1891. um,

  1892. his,

1893. and he has something inside of us.

1894. This is something that he wrote.

  1895. He said,

  1896. when I was 16,

  1897. so,

  1898. this was like,

  1899. good way back

  1900. for him.

1901. My father bought me a car

  1902. at an auction

  1903. for $75.

  1904. He said,

  1905. it was pink.

  1906. A 57 Ford,

  1907. which my dad insisted

  1908. was coral color,

  1909. not pink.

  1910. He said,

  1911. I couldn't drive a pink car to school.

1912. And then I heard the words

1913. that he always said to me,

  1914. um,

1915. that I would one day say

  1916. to my future children,

  1917. son,

  1918. it is,

1919. a poor ride is better

  1920. than a proud walk.

  1921. And he said,

1922. he said it so convincingly

  1923. that I knew

1924. that it probably was from the Bible.

  1925. He said,

  1926. um,

  1927. he said,

1928. then my dad opened the hood

  1929. of that car,

  1930. that 57 Ford.

1931. And my dad opened the hood

  1932. of that car.

  1933. And to my surprise,

  1934. underneath it was a

  1935. 390 engine

  1936. with two four-barrel

  1937. carburetors.

  1938. Some of you

  1939. don't know

  1940. what that is.

  1941. And then he said,

  1942. um,

  1943. the car

  1944. had been

  1945. a South Carolina

  1946. State Interceptor,

  1947. a highway patrol car.

  1948. Nothing,

  1949. nothing had more power

  1950. under the hood.

  1951. Space

  1952. and conviction

  1953. prevents me

  1954. from detailing

  1955. the surprises

  1956. that Corvettes

  1957. and Roasters

  1958. would get

  1959. after they looked at

  1960. and laughed

  1961. at my pink

  1962. 57 Ford

  1963. while I was sitting

  1964. by them

  1965. at the stoplight.

  1966. So in other words,

  1967. like he dusted them,

  1968. like in races,

  1969. they just,

1970. he just like left them

  1971. behind in his car.

  1972. He says,

1973. it didn't look like much,

  1974. but there was power

  1975. under the hood.

  1976. And

  1977. it's this idea

  1978. that we feel

  1979. inadequate

  1980. and broken.

  1981. There's not a lot

  1982. to us at all.

  1983. I mean,

  1984. just look at me,

  1985. look at yourself.

  1986. There's not really

  1987. much,

  1988. much to us.

  1989. Nothing really

  1990. to brag about.

  1991. Um,

  1992. but God has chosen

1993. to put like his power

  1994. inside of us

  1995. and remember

  1996. like there's power

  1997. under the hood

  1998. in your life.

  1999. We can,

  2000. there's not a lot

  2001. to us,

  2002. but because of

  2003. what Christ has done

  2004. and the work

  2005. of the Holy Spirit

  2006. in our lives,

  2007. we have power

2008. to live the Christian life,

  2009. to,

2010. to present to the fullness

  2011. of what God

  2012. has for us.

  2013. He's made us his

2014. and we can press into that

  2015. by his grace

2016. and by his power alone.

  2017. So,

  2018. that's the mystery

  2019. of sanctification.

  2020. Step out,

  2021. be obedient,

  2022. be responsible,

  2023. um,

  2024. work,

  2025. labor,

  2026. toil,

  2027. pour out your blood,

  2028. sweat,

  2029. and tears

  2030. for the cause

  2031. of Christ,

2032. but at the same time

  2033. look to God

  2034. and be like,

  2035. I need you

  2036. to help me.

  2037. I need your grace.

  2038. I need your strength.

  2039. Um,

  2040. I need your power.

  2041. I need your energy.

  2042. I don't want to do this.

  2043. I need your,

  2044. to work in me.

2045. I need you to give me

2046. this desire to do this.

2047. And that's how we live.

  2048. And that's the,

  2049. that's the mystery.

  2050. Both are there.

  2051. You can't,

  2052. you can't get rid

2053. of one or the other.

  2054. They're both there

  2055. together in Scripture.

  2056. And so,

  2057. let's,

  2058. uh,

  2059. let's pray together

  2060. and then we'll respond

2061. in just a time of singing

2062. and then we'll break up

  2063. into groups.

  2064. So,

  2065. um,

  2066. Alex,

  2067. bags,

  2068. actually,

  2069. you can come up.

  2070. Father,

  2071. uh,

  2072. we give you praise

  2073. for just allowing us

  2074. to be together tonight

  2075. to open your word,

2076. to read about the work

2077. that you started in us,

2078. the work that is going on

  2079. and is now,

  2080. um,

  2081. God is,

2082. your power that is work

  2083. within us,

2084. both to will and work

  2085. for your good pleasure.

  2086. And Lord,

  2087. that you promised

  2088. to bring that work

  2089. to completion.

  2090. You would finish

  2091. the work you began

  2092. in us.

  2093. and,

  2094. so,

  2095. Father,

  2096. help us

  2097. to understand,

  2098. experience,

  2099. apply the,

  2100. uh,

  2101. the mystery

  2102. that exists

  2103. between us

  2104. and your power

  2105. that works within us,

  2106. Lord,

  2107. um,

  2108. to step out

  2109. in obedience

  2110. and to work

  2111. and,

  2112. um,

  2113. to make disciples,

  2114. to reach the lost,

  2115. to expand the kingdom

  2116. both here

  2117. and around the world.

  2118. God,

  2119. and we would look

  2120. to you

  2121. for every,

  2122. every grace,

  2123. every strength

  2124. that we need

  2125. to accomplish that

  2126. and,

  2127. you would empower

  2128. your people

  2129. to that end

  2130. and help us

  2131. to remember

  2132. there is,

  2133. there's not a lot

  2134. to us,

  2135. um,

  2136. ordinary people,

  2137. Lord,

  2138. we don't have

  2139. anything cool

  2140. about us

  2141. getting to save us

  2142. because we had

  2143. something good

  2144. to offer you.

  2145. Um,

  2146. you saved us

  2147. out of grace

  2148. and because

  2149. of that

  2150. we have power

  2151. in our lives,

  2152. the power

  2153. under the hood

  2154. to live

  2155. the Christian life

  2156. and,

  2157. so Lord,

  2158. be glorified

  2159. and be honored.

  2160. Help us,

  2161. Lord.

  2162. We love you

  2163. in Christ's name.

  2164. Amen.

  2165. Amen.
