  1. Please take out your copy of God's Word and turn to Paul's letter to the Romans, chapter 11.

    Romans 11 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. And we did so in this way to talk and kind of to bring to some finality Paul's discussion of the Jews and what's happening with them now and what will eventually be the case for them.

  4. And I don't have time to recap everything that I said last week, but essentially I showed in a pattern throughout chapter 11 that I believe in verse 26 when he says,

  5. And in this way all Israel will be saved, he's talking about the process by which his grace is still being extended to the people of Israel, to the nation of Israel.

  6. That he is talking present day and that this grace has not left Israel as a nation, but that it has been extended to Gentiles as well as Jews.

  7. And so his grace is running prevalent across the earth this day.

  8. Either way, the result's the same.

  9. Some believe that this text is talking about a final, full salvation of Israel.

  10. And we talked in brief about that.

  11. But either way, the point remains that what he's trying to say to Gentile believers, which I will presume that every single one of us are,

  12. is that we ought not be proud.

  13. We ought not become haughty towards the Israelites.

  14. We ought not be anti-Semitic in any way whatsoever because it's by grace that we're saved.

  15. Not works, right?

  16. It's not because we're Gentile that we now have the grace of God.

  17. And so I want to talk about that.

  18. I want to kind of rewind into chapter 11 and talk a bit more about that, focusing on verses 17 through 24 and particularly 20 through 22.

  19. So let's pray together and then I'll begin reading that.

  20. Father God, I love you because you first loved me.

  21. And I thank you for the great grace that you've poured out on my life and on the lives of so many in this room.

  22. Surely, us coming together this morning is a picture of your loving kindness toward mankind.

  23. I pray we don't miss that this morning.

  24. And Father, you know what a mess I am generally.

  25. And certainly this morning, frantic.

  26. Even with an extra hour in my day, I'm running around.

  27. And I just pray, Father, that you will work through my frailty by your Spirit.

  28. That you will be powerful in me.

  29. And that you will work in the hearers of your word.

  30. That they might know and understand who you are.

  31. That they might serve you best this coming week.

  32. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  33. Amen.

  34. Alright, so let's read together.

  35. Beginning in verse 17 through verse 24.

  36. But if some of the branches were broken off.

  37. And you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others.

  38. And now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree.

  39. Do not be arrogant toward the branches.

  40. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root.

  41. But the root that supports you.

  42. Then you will say, branches were broken off.

  43. So that I might be grafted in.

  44. That is true.

  45. They were broken off because of their unbelief.

  46. But you stand fast through faith.

  47. So do not become proud, but fear.

  48. For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.

  49. Note then the kindness and the severity of God.

  50. Severity towards those who have fallen.

  51. But God's kindness to you.

  52. Provided you continue in his kindness.

  53. Otherwise you too will be cut off.

  54. And even if they do not continue in their unbelief.

  55. Will be grafted in.

  56. For God has the power to graft them in again.

  57. For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree.

  58. And grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree.

  59. How much more will these, the natural branches, be grafted back into their own olive tree?

  60. So Paul uses this beautiful analogy of grafting.

  61. And as I was thinking this week through the analogy.

  62. I actually thought about not talking about it at all.

  63. But then realized that there is a really good chance.

  64. That many of you have no idea what he's talking about.

  65. When he speaks of grafting.

  66. What that means.

  67. It's to cut off a branch.

  68. This happens in cultivation all the time.

  69. You cut off a branch.

  70. And you take another branch.

  71. And you cut it in just such a way.

  72. I almost showed you guys a video of it happening today.

  73. But you cut it in just such a way.

  74. So that it can be inserted into the root, the tree, whatever that may be.

  75. And it will then get its sustenance from the tree.

  76. And you will have then a new tree.

  77. The practice happens as farmers try to cultivate a better product.

  78. So it happens with olives.

  79. Quite often, in fact.

  80. There's a trait in a wild olive that is beneficial.

  81. Let's say drought tolerance to the cultivated tree.

  82. And so the farmer cuts and grafts in the other part.

  83. Now obviously in this case, he's not saying that in some way the Gentiles had something to offer to the kingdom of God.

  84. Therefore, they were a better version.

  85. And he needed to graft them into the old version.

  86. But that's the picture that we're seeing here.

  87. Is that because of their unbelief, because of their unfruitfulness, parts of Israel were trimmed away.

  88. And new, wild olive branches were grafted in.

  89. That they might bear fruit.

  90. And so here's the analogy that he gives us.

  91. And he calls us in this to humility.

  92. And he does it three times in chapter 11.

  93. Look at verse 18.

  94. He says,

  95. Do not be arrogant toward the branches.

  96. Verse 20.

  97. So do not become proud, but fear.

  98. Verse 25.

  99. He says,

  100. Lest you be wise in your own sight.

  101. Do not be haughty.

  102. Just because you're part of the tree now,

  103. do not be arrogant, proud, boastful, haughty towards those who have been cut off.

  104. And why?

  105. It's because you stand fast through faith.

  106. Faith.

  107. Not because of your works.

  108. Isn't that the great message of Romans?

  109. Justification by faith alone.

  110. Not because of works.

  111. Not because of anything we could have ever possibly done to earn God's favor.

  112. But because of the faith that he has given us to believe in his son.

  113. Faith is the opposite of pride.

  114. Thinking that we can somehow do anything is the opposite of faith.

  115. Because faith in Jesus Christ, the son of God, the person and his work, his death and resurrection for us, brings nothing but humility.

  116. It impedes pride.

  117. You cannot be proud if you truly believe in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

  118. So faith then is set in juxtaposition to pride.

  119. And we stand fast through faith.

  120. So we see then in verse 20 through 22 that they were broken off because of their unbelief.

  121. But we stand fast through faith.

  122. So we shouldn't become proud.

  123. But instead, we should fear.

  124. For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.

  125. Note then the kindness and the severity of God.

  126. The severity of those who have fallen, but God's kindness to you, provided you continue in his kindness.

  127. Otherwise, you too will be cut off.

  128. You see the warning here.

  129. Is that if we become proud, if we think that we have obtained our justification before God by our own doing, what does that mean?

  130. We weren't Christians to begin with.

  131. Somehow, we made our way into the tree, but we too will be cut off.

  132. The analogy breaks down at that point, right?

  133. But that is what he is saying.

  134. Truly regenerate believers, those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ, will not be proud.

  135. And he calls us to fear.

  136. And the challenge here is putting in proper balance fear and faith.

  137. Trembling, being in awe at the holiness of God.

  138. And then believing that we can stand before him justified.

  139. There's a challenge in that.

  140. And it's a challenge that's talked about all throughout scriptures.

  141. Turn with me, if you will, to Matthew chapter 20.

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  142. This is a parable.

  143. Jesus is talking to a Jewish audience at this time.

  144. Those who had the privileges of the Old Testament, the prophets, the temple, the sacrificial system,

  145. had all these things giving them windows into the ultimate and final culmination of God's grace to mankind.

  146. However, I don't want to find myself in this position.

  147. Verse 1, chapter 20.

  148. Jesus says,

  149. The kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.

  150. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, or a day's wage, he sent them into his vineyard.

  151. And going about the third hour, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace.

  152. And to them he said,

  153. You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right, I will give you a day's wage.

  154. So they went.

  155. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same.

  156. And about the eleventh hour, he went out and found others standing.

  157. And he said to them, Why do you stand here idle all day?

  158. They said to him, Because no one has hired us.

  159. He said to them, You go into the vineyard too.

  160. And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman,

  161. Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last up to the first.

  162. And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius.

  163. Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more.

  164. But each of them also received a denarius.

  165. And on receiving it, they grumbled at the master of the house, saying,

  166. These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.

  167. But he replied to one of them, Friend, I am doing you no wrong.

  168. Do you not agree with me for a denarius?

  169. Take what belongs to you and go.

  170. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you.

  171. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me?

  172. Or do you begrudge my generosity?

  173. So the last will be first, and the first last.

  174. And this is Paul's warning, just turned to the Gentile believers.

  175. That we might see that God's grace to people is not deserved, but he pours it out because he's God.

  176. That we might not be proud in any way that we've received it,

  177. but that we pray for those who have not yet received it.

  178. There's another great story, an Old Testament story, of who I don't want to be in the book of Jonah.

  179. Jonah is called and sent to go to the Ninevites, but yet he runs away.

  180. And why does he run away onto a ship to Tarshish?

  181. Because he knows God is good.

  182. He knows God loves even the evil and wicked Ninevites.

  183. He knows that if he goes proclaiming the judgment of God,

  184. that there's a good chance that God's going to pour out his grace on these people,

  185. who in his mind don't deserve it.

  186. And if that's the case, then he did.

  187. In his own mind, he was so proud to think that he deserved God's love toward him.

  188. And so in Jonah 3, 4, he says,

  189. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey.

  190. And this is the message he proclaimed.

  191. So when God finally swallowed him up in a big fish, spit him out onto the beach,

  192. he goes to Nineveh and he calls out,

  193. Yet 40 days and Nineveh shall be overthrown.

  194. He goes proclaiming a message of God's wrath to the Ninevites.

  195. And then in 4, 1 and 2, it's recorded,

  196. But it displeased Jonah exceedingly,

  197. and he was angry after the repentance of the whole city of Nineveh.

  198. And he prayed to the Lord and said,

  199. O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country?

  200. That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish,

  201. for I knew that you were a gracious God and merciful,

  202. slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love

  203. and relenting from disaster.

  204. I don't want to have the heart of Jonah.

  205. I want to believe that God is a good and loving and kind God.

  206. I want to have that type of faith

  207. that properly balances in the case with fear.

  208. So we ought to have fear and faith in proper measure.

  209. And you could put other words on that as well,

  210. like in our text, severity and kindness,

  211. mercy and wrath,

  212. justice and forgiveness.

  213. You can put the two things anywhere you would like to in there,

  214. the words that you prefer.

  215. In this case,

  216. we see both fear and faith,

  217. as well as severity and kindness.

  218. So what is the prescription that he gives to us

  219. to not be proud,

  220. to not be boastful,

  221. to not think in this way

  222. about those who have not yet received

  223. the grace of God?

  224. He tells us

  225. to note.

  226. We're told to note

  227. the severity and kindness of God.

  228. Verse 22.

  229. Note then the kindness

  230. and the severity of God.

  231. That word note

  232. is most commonly

  233. translated in our scriptures

  234. as behold,

  235. look.

  236. In the ESV,

  237. which is the translation I'm preaching from,

  238. it's found 1,061 times.

  239. Look, look, look.

  240. Over and over and over again,

  241. which leads me to believe

  242. that God must think

  243. that we're not very good

  244. at seeing things.

  245. Right?

  246. Note, look,

  247. behold the kindness

  248. and the severity of God.

  249. And if we do this properly,

  250. we have no room

  251. to be proud.

  252. None.

  253. Whatsoever.

  254. Where do we do that?

  255. Where do we look?

  256. Where do we behold?

  257. How is it that we note this?

  258. From our scriptures.

  259. Isn't this the record

  260. of God's,

  261. both His severity

  262. and His kindness

  263. toward mankind?

  264. It all culminates,

  265. it all comes together,

  266. converges

  267. in the personal work of Christ

  268. as Christ bore

  269. the full wrath of God

  270. for the sins of the church,

  271. giving to them justification,

  272. giving to them the grace

  273. because of what He did.

  274. It all comes together.

  275. We see that

  276. in the scriptures.

  277. the Bible

  278. in its entirety

  279. speaks of Christ.

  280. I challenge you

  281. in your reading of it

  282. to see that

  283. to be the case.

  284. Shows us

  285. who we are

  286. and who God is.

  287. And that in the middle

  288. stands in that

  289. vast, vast,

  290. unfillable gap

  291. the one who could,

  292. Jesus Christ.

  293. That is how

  294. we note.

  295. That is how we look.

  296. That's how we gaze upon

  297. the severity

  298. and the kindness

  299. of God.

  300. Do you do that?

  301. Do you value

  302. your scripture?

  303. Do you read

  304. your scriptures?

  305. One of the great challenges

  306. of the American church

  307. is that we are

  308. biblically illiterate.

  309. We are at a place

  310. in American Christianity

  311. much like the days

  312. of the Reformation.

  313. Reformation.

  314. Recently,

  315. as a nation,

  316. we celebrated

  317. Halloween.

  318. It's also known

  319. as Reformation Day.

  320. October 31st,

  321. 1517

  322. is when Martin Luther

  323. nailed the 95 Theses

  324. to the door of the church

  325. in Wittenberg.

  326. That's when it happened.

  327. October 31st.

  328. And what was happening

  329. at that time

  330. is that the church at large,

  331. the Catholic church,

  332. had led the people astray

  333. because the Bible

  334. was only written

  335. in Latin.

  336. In fact,

  337. the priests preached

  338. in Latin.

  339. And nobody knew

  340. what was going on.

  341. In the same way,

  342. we now have the scriptures

  343. in our own language,

  344. in multiple translations

  345. with study notes.

  346. Right?

  347. And yet,

  348. many people this morning

  349. sit across our country

  350. entirely biblically illiterate.

  351. A pastor can stand up

  352. and because of his position

  353. can say anything he wants

  354. and it's swallowed

  355. hook, line, and sinker.

  356. And many people

  357. are going to be dragged

  358. onto shore

  359. and they're going to die

  360. because he's not

  361. preaching the truth.

  362. God himself

  363. has penned words

  364. for our lives.

  365. Why do we not

  366. read it

  367. more?

  368. Right now,

  369. our Sunday school class,

  370. the men's and the women's,

  371. are reading through the Bible

  372. in a year.

  373. And that has

  374. posed itself

  375. as a challenge

  376. for people to

  377. spend the time

  378. it takes

  379. to read

  380. the assigned reading

  381. to get through

  382. the entire Bible

  383. in a year.

  384. I put myself

  385. in the same boat.

  386. I'm not judging you.

  387. Right?

  388. It can be

  389. a challenge.

  390. Can't it?

  391. We're so busy.

  392. We have so much

  393. going on.

  394. Will you get

  395. less done

  396. if you read

  397. your scriptures more?

  398. Quite possibly.

  399. But I believe

  400. you'll get the right

  401. things done

  402. and they'll be done

  403. well

  404. if you read

  405. your scriptures

  406. more.

  407. That you will be

  408. properly fueled

  409. by a proper

  410. balance of

  411. fear and faith,

  412. severity

  413. and kindness.

  414. Let me give you

  415. an example.

  416. If you've been

  417. around here long,

  418. you know that

  419. George Mueller

  420. is one of my heroes.

  421. A man who

  422. pastored a church

  423. in England

  424. as well as

  425. ran an orphanage.

  426. Reached

  427. thousands and thousands.

  428. He ran a missionary

  429. society,

  430. funded all kinds

  431. of mission efforts

  432. around the world.

  433. In his last days,

  434. he spent his time

  435. traveling around

  436. the world.

  437. An amazing man

  438. of faith.

  439. And this is where

  440. it kind of all

  441. rooted in.

  442. It was in his

  443. diligence in

  444. studying the

  445. scriptures.

  446. Four years

  447. after he became

  448. a believer,

  449. this was written

  450. of him by A.T.

  451. Pearson,

  452. who wrote the

  453. best biography

  454. on him.

  455. It says,

  456. after a true

  457. relish for the

  458. scriptures had

  459. been created,

  460. he could not

  461. understand how

  462. he could ever

  463. have treated

  464. God's book

  465. with such

  466. neglect.

  467. It seemed

  468. obvious that

  469. God,

  470. having condescended

  471. to become

  472. an author,

  473. inspired holy

  474. men to write

  475. the scriptures.

  476. He would in

  477. them impart

  478. the most vital

  479. truths.

  480. His message

  481. would cover

  482. all matters

  483. which concern

  484. man's welfare,

  485. and therefore,

  486. under the double

  487. impulse of duty

  488. and delight,

  489. we should

  490. instinctively

  491. and habitually

  492. turn to the

  493. Bible.

  494. Moreover,

  495. as he read

  496. and studied

  497. this book

  498. of God,

  499. he felt

  500. himself

  501. admitted to

  502. more and more

  503. intimate

  504. acquaintance

  505. with the

  506. author.

  507. During the

  508. last 20

  509. years of

  510. his life,

  511. he read

  512. it carefully

  513. through four

  514. or five

  515. times annually

  516. with a

  517. growing sense

  518. of his own

  519. rapid increase

  520. in the knowledge

  521. of God

  522. thereby.

  523. In the last

  524. 20 years of

  525. his life,

  526. George Mueller

  527. lived,

  528. I'm pretty

  529. sure,

  530. to the age

  531. of 92.

  532. At the

  533. age of 71,

  534. in his own

  535. writing and

  536. his journaling,

  537. he said that

  538. he had read

  539. the scriptures

  540. through a

  541. hundred times.

  542. So in the

  543. last time of

  544. his year,

  545. it increased

  546. even,

  547. even more

  548. so.

  549. It's a great

  550. story of Mueller

  551. when he was a

  552. young Christian

  553. who went to

  554. a meeting

  555. and spoke

  556. about infant

  557. baptism.

  558. You know,

  559. we're not on

  560. board with that

  561. here as a

  562. Baptist church.

  563. We're credo

  564. Baptists,

  565. and he

  566. spoke in

  567. defense of

  568. infant baptism

  569. and afterwards

  570. an old lady

  571. sitting in the

  572. group said to

  573. him,

  574. Mr. Mueller,

  575. I would

  576. encourage you

  577. to never

  578. speak on

  579. such a

  580. topic until

  581. you've

  582. searched the

  583. scriptures in

  584. regards to

  585. it.

  586. And he

  587. felt so

  588. pricked by

  589. that that

  590. he spent

  591. his studies

  592. from there

  593. reading the

  594. entire

  595. scriptures

  596. with

  597. baptism in

  598. mind.

  599. At the

  600. end of that

  601. process,

  602. he was a

  603. credo

  604. Baptist.

  605. Praise God.

  606. As you

  607. should be.

  608. And he

  609. began a

  610. habit of

  611. doing that

  612. with any

  613. topic that

  614. vexed him.

  615. He would

  616. read the

  617. entirety of

  618. the scriptures

  619. with that

  620. topic in

  621. mind,

  622. trying to

  623. search the

  624. counsel of

  625. God in

  626. regards to

  627. that.

  628. A man who

  629. loved the

  630. scriptures,

  631. read it

  632. through over

  633. 200 times

  634. in his life.

  635. And we're

  636. challenged to

  637. even get

  638. up and

  639. spend any

  640. time in

  641. the word

  642. of God

  643. in the

  644. morning.

  645. It's worth

  646. the sacrifice.

  647. It's worth

  648. the sleep.

  649. It's worth

  650. putting something

  651. else off.

  652. You know

  653. what?

  654. The dishes

  655. can stay

  656. dirty.

  657. We must

  658. know our

  659. scriptures to

  660. see these

  661. things in

  662. proper

  663. balance.

  664. Fear and

  665. faith,

  666. severity and

  667. kindness.

  668. God

  669. proclaims his

  670. name when

  671. Moses is on

  672. Mount Sinai.

  673. He says,

  674. the Lord

  675. passed before

  676. him and

  677. proclaimed,

  678. the Lord,

  679. the Lord,

  680. a God

  681. merciful and

  682. gracious,

  683. slow to

  684. anger and

  685. abounding in

  686. steadfast love

  687. and faithfulness,

  688. keeping steadfast

  689. love for

  690. thousands,

  691. forgiving iniquity

  692. and transgression

  693. and sin,

  694. but who will

  695. by no means

  696. clear the

  697. guilty,

  698. visiting the

  699. iniquity of

  700. the fathers

  701. on the

  702. children and

  703. the children's

  704. children to

  705. the third

  706. and the

  707. fourth

  708. generation.

  709. So in

  710. God's very

  711. presentation of

  712. his own

  713. character,

  714. he says,

  715. I am

  716. merciful,

  717. I am

  718. good,

  719. I am

  720. kind to

  721. thousands,

  722. I'm

  723. forgiving

  724. iniquity,

  725. I'm

  726. being

  727. gracious

  728. to

  729. sinners,

  730. yet,

  731. yet,

  732. I'm

  733. also

  734. wrathful,

  735. I'm

  736. vengeful,

  737. I will

  738. punish

  739. sin.

  740. And we

  741. see the

  742. two things

  743. together,

  744. severity of

  745. God and

  746. his kindness.

  747. Matthew

  748. 10,

  749. 28-31,

  750. Jesus said,

  751. and do

  752. not fear

  753. those who

  754. kill the

  755. body but

  756. cannot kill

  757. the soul,

  758. rather fear

  759. him who

  760. can destroy

  761. both soul

  762. and body

  763. in hell.

  764. Are not

  765. two sparrows

  766. sold for

  767. a penny?

  768. And not

  769. one of

  770. them will

  771. fall to

  772. the ground

  773. apart from

  774. your father,

  775. but even

  776. the hairs

  777. of your

  778. head are

  779. all numbered.

  780. Fear

  781. not,

  782. therefore,

  783. you are

  784. of more

  785. value than

  786. many sparrows.

  787. Interesting

  788. language.

  789. Jesus

  790. says,

  791. do not

  792. fear

  793. those who

  794. kill the

  795. body but

  796. can't kill

  797. the soul,

  798. rather,

  799. fear him,

  800. being God,

  801. who can

  802. destroy both

  803. soul and

  804. body in

  805. hell.

  806. The severity

  807. of God,

  808. right?

  809. Fear God.

  810. He can

  811. destroy you.

  812. That's what's

  813. due you

  814. because of

  815. your sin.

  816. He can

  817. destroy you.

  818. But then

  819. look at the

  820. kindness.

  821. Are not

  822. two sparrows

  823. sold for

  824. a penny,

  825. and not

  826. one of

  827. them will

  828. fall to

  829. the ground

  830. apart from

  831. your father?

  832. Even the

  833. hairs on

  834. your head

  835. are numbered.

  836. So,

  837. fear not

  838. the severity

  839. and the

  840. kindness

  841. of God.

  842. We are

  843. owed

  844. destruction.

  845. We were

  846. enemies

  847. of God,

  848. but now

  849. we're called

  850. his friends.

  851. So,

  852. we ought to

  853. both

  854. fear

  855. and then

  856. be comforted

  857. by his

  858. kindness

  859. to us.

  860. Romans

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  861. chapter 2.

  862. verses 4

  863. and 5.

  864. Paul wrote,

  865. Or do you

  866. presume on

  867. the riches

  868. of his

  869. kindness

  870. and forbearance

  871. and patience,

  872. not knowing

  873. that God's

  874. kindness is

  875. meant to

  876. lead you

  877. to repentance,

  878. but because

  879. of your

  880. hard and

  881. impenetent

  882. heart,

  883. you are

  884. storing up

  885. wrath for

  886. yourself on

  887. the day of

  888. wrath,

  889. when God's

  890. righteous

  891. judgment

  892. will be

  893. revealed.

  894. Again,

  895. the kindness

  896. of God

  897. to us,

  898. meant to

  899. lead us

  900. to repentance,

  901. set against

  902. the wrath

  903. when God

  904. will judge

  905. the world

  906. and those

  907. who are not

  908. found in

  909. him.

  910. So,

  911. it's a

  912. simple

  913. gospel message,

  914. right?

  915. The faith

  916. that should

  917. be preventing

  918. us from

  919. being proud.

  920. We ought

  921. not be

  922. proud,

  923. but we

  924. should fear

  925. because if

  926. we continue

  927. in the

  928. kindness

  929. of God,

  930. we are

  931. his.

  932. You see

  933. how the

  934. two things

  935. can live,

  936. exist

  937. together,

  938. that we

  939. can both

  940. fear him,

  941. but continue

  942. in his

  943. kindness,

  944. because we

  945. are his.

  946. So,

  947. then how

  948. do those

  949. two things

  950. kind of

  951. press

  952. together?

  953. How do

  954. they increase?

  955. How do

  956. they cause

  957. us to

  958. live

  959. rightly?

  960. And this

  961. is the

  962. practical.

  963. Number

  964. one,

  965. fear

  966. causes

  967. your

  968. faith

  969. in the

  970. kindness

  971. of God

  972. to grow.

  973. It

  974. causes

  975. your

  976. faith

  977. in the

  978. kindness

  979. of God

  980. to grow.

  981. Verse 22,

  982. provided you

  983. continue in

  984. his kindness,

  985. severity

  986. is meant

  987. to lead

  988. us

  989. to

  990. kindness.

  991. Understanding

  992. the weight

  993. of our

  994. sin

  995. leads

  996. us

  997. to

  998. understand

  999. the

  1000. kindness

  1001. of

  1002. God

  1003. to

  1004. us

  1005. in

  1006. Jesus

  1007. Christ.

  1008. It's

  1009. a fear

  1010. of mine

  1011. that the

  1012. church,

  1013. that even

  1014. our

  1015. church,

  1016. doesn't

  1017. quite

  1018. understand

  1019. their

  1020. just

  1021. condemnation

  1022. before

  1023. they were

  1024. justified

  1025. by Christ.

  1026. That we

  1027. think,

  1028. well,

  1029. I mean,

  1030. I wasn't a

  1031. good person,

  1032. but I wasn't

  1033. really a

  1034. bad

  1035. person.

  1036. Compare me

  1037. to the

  1038. others

  1039. around

  1040. me.

  1041. I was

  1042. doing

  1043. okay.

  1044. Many of

  1045. us probably

  1046. grew up

  1047. in Christian

  1048. homes.

  1049. We were

  1050. moral,

  1051. but we

  1052. were not

  1053. righteous.

  1054. Understanding

  1055. God's

  1056. severity

  1057. towards

  1058. sinners,

  1059. how much

  1060. he hates

  1061. sin,

  1062. leads you

  1063. to increase

  1064. your faith

  1065. in the

  1066. kindness

  1067. of God,

  1068. cause you

  1069. to hold

  1070. fast to

  1071. that love

  1072. towards us.

  1073. I'm

  1074. familiar

  1075. with 1

  1076. John 4

  1077. 18 that

  1078. says,

  1079. perfect love

  1080. casts out

  1081. fear.

  1082. I know

  1083. the text.

  1084. I understand

  1085. it.

  1086. Do you?

  1087. If there's

  1088. a question

  1089. in your

  1090. mind,

  1091. this side

  1092. of heaven,

  1093. this side

  1094. of glory,

  1095. none of

  1096. us will

  1097. experience

  1098. love

  1099. perfected.

  1100. fear.

  1101. So fear

  1102. will always

  1103. play a

  1104. part in

  1105. our

  1106. living.

  1107. After our

  1108. death,

  1109. glorification,

  1110. one day,

  1111. it will no

  1112. longer anymore,

  1113. but for

  1114. now,

  1115. fear and

  1116. faith must

  1117. combine that

  1118. our faith

  1119. in the

  1120. kindness of

  1121. God will

  1122. grow.

  1123. Number

  1124. two,

  1125. fear brings

  1126. joy to

  1127. our faith

  1128. in the

  1129. kindness of

  1130. God.

  1131. So if

  1132. we're further

  1133. believing that

  1134. this is true,

  1135. that the

  1136. severity of

  1137. God is

  1138. what was

  1139. due us,

  1140. and yet

  1141. the kindness

  1142. of God

  1143. is what

  1144. we've

  1145. received,

  1146. we will

  1147. find great

  1148. joy in

  1149. that.

  1150. The

  1151. doxology

  1152. found here

  1153. at the

  1154. end of

  1155. chapter 11,

  1156. which I'm

  1157. looking forward

  1158. to preaching

  1159. on next

  1160. week,

  1161. we read

  1162. the scriptures

  1163. so horribly

  1164. at times,

  1165. and it's

  1166. difficult,

  1167. of course,

  1168. to read

  1169. tone and

  1170. inflection

  1171. into things.

  1172. I think we

  1173. all experience

  1174. that to be

  1175. true with

  1176. text messages.

  1177. What did he

  1178. mean by

  1179. that?

  1180. But the

  1181. translators have

  1182. helped us,

  1183. they've given

  1184. us punctuation,

  1185. they've helped

  1186. try to emphasize

  1187. some things,

  1188. and many people

  1189. read this,

  1190. oh the depth

  1191. and the riches

  1192. of the wisdom

  1193. and knowledge

  1194. of God,

  1195. how unsearchable

  1196. are his

  1197. judgments,

  1198. and how

  1199. inscrutable

  1200. his ways.

  1201. But they're

  1202. ignoring the

  1203. exclamation

  1204. points on

  1205. the end of

  1206. this type of

  1207. thing.

  1208. Paul, as he's

  1209. talked through

  1210. us, this

  1211. whole process

  1212. introduced the

  1213. doctrine of

  1214. election to

  1215. us in

  1216. chapters 8

  1217. and chapters

  1218. 9, and

  1219. moving through

  1220. what's going

  1221. to eventually

  1222. happen to

  1223. his people,

  1224. the people

  1225. that he

  1226. loves and

  1227. desperately

  1228. wants to

  1229. see come

  1230. to Christ,

  1231. he finally

  1232. at the end

  1233. of all of

  1234. that says,

  1235. oh the

  1236. depth of

  1237. the riches

  1238. and the

  1239. wisdom and

  1240. knowledge of

  1241. God, how

  1242. unsearchable

  1243. are his

  1244. judgments and

  1245. how inscrutable

  1246. his ways,

  1247. for who has

  1248. known the

  1249. mind of the

  1250. Lord, or

  1251. who has

  1252. been his

  1253. counselor,

  1254. or who has

  1255. given a gift

  1256. to him that

  1257. he might be

  1258. repaid.

  1259. For from

  1260. him and

  1261. through him

  1262. and to

  1263. him are

  1264. all things,

  1265. to him be

  1266. glory forever.

  1267. Amen.

  1268. I think that's

  1269. how Paul would

  1270. have read it.

  1271. Right?

  1272. Moved to

  1273. joy because

  1274. he understood

  1275. the severity

  1276. of God, the

  1277. fear that he

  1278. should have in

  1279. his relationship

  1280. with God, and

  1281. therefore he was

  1282. moved to joy in

  1283. the kindness of

  1284. God.

  1285. God.

  1286. And those two

  1287. things, our

  1288. faith increasing,

  1289. our dependency

  1290. on God, and

  1291. our joy increasing

  1292. in his kindness,

  1293. should move our

  1294. faith into action.

  1295. So fear, thirdly,

  1296. fear moves our

  1297. faith into action

  1298. for the sake of

  1299. others.

  1300. For the sake of

  1301. others.

  1302. If you have

  1303. wrapped your mind

  1304. around, as much

  1305. as you can, the

  1306. severity of God

  1307. towards sinners,

  1308. sinners, you

  1309. know that you

  1310. stood in that
