  1. Tonight we'll be teaching on this text, and it's an interesting text for a lot of reasons, because it's more narrative than some mysterious meaning.

  2. ! We look at this text and there's so much going on there, but it's not like chapters 1-2 up to verse 18.

  3. It's really more narrative than some esoteric theology, where we're looking for, well, what does this mean?

  4. And it's pretty clear. You can read it.

  5. And what he says is that he hopes to see the Philippians soon, and that he's going to send Timothy and Epaproditus to him.

  6. So, we can read that, and pretty much that's what it's saying.

  7. And it's interesting because the last time I taught, I taught on something that was kind of similar to it, where it was really just straightforward.

  8. This is what the Bible says. It's not like we really have to do some cross-references and look all over Scripture to see what this means.

  9. And so, I think because of that, maybe I'm prone to believe that God is trying to teach me something, that I make these really short and simple and sweet texts.

  10. I pass over them a lot of the times.

  11. And I really like the bigger ones that you have to look all over and understand, well, what does this text mean?

  12. I think that's kind of what the Lord's trying to teach me, is that I enjoy these big theoretical texts, but when it comes to very straightforward Scripture that you don't really get around, because you can't really interpret it five different ways.

  13. It means what it means. Don't grumble. You can't interpret that.

  14. Well, I think Paul might be saying when it comes to when you're in the church, don't grumble, but when you're outside, it's okay, or whatever.

  15. Like, it's not like that. It's just very straightforward.

  16. And so, this is the second time.

  17. So, I get this text, and I'm wondering what God's trying to teach me.

  18. And it's not wrong for us to search for these bigger texts and to like these texts that have a lot going on there.

  19. It's not wrong, because it's good.

  20. We're actually commanded to search the text for deeper meanings.

  21. There's so much going on in Scripture, and we're commanded to look into it.

  22. But it is wrong if we start putting the scale, or we start saying,

  23. okay, well, these are the more, like, bigger texts, like 27 through 30 of chapter 1,

  24. but then these verses in 14 through 18 aren't that important, because it's straightforward.

  25. But, kind of in, like, Christian circles, we tend to do that.

  26. We easily kind of put a balance and a scale and see, well, this text means more,

  27. because we can really examine it more.

  28. And the reason why this is so hard is because it's like simple texts reminding people that it should be really above these texts,

  29. that we should have these down, that these are basic Christianity points.

  30. We should have these points down.

  31. And it should be something that we're still trying to cover,

  32. but the truth is that we still all struggle with being humble.

  33. We all still struggle with not grumbling.

  34. And for someone to say, well, you're not really giving those texts enough attention that they need,

  35. it's kind of like reminding a college student about the golden rule,

  36. which is something that you learn when you're in preschool.

  37. And it's kind of humbling.

  38. It's like, well, I know not to put others before myself, but I learned that in preschool,

  39. so why are you reminding me of that now?

  40. And so we have pride.

  41. And the truth is that our pride hates being reminded that we so oftentimes neglect the small,

  42. simple things that we're commanded to.

  43. And so kind of the best way that I can illustrate this in my own life is that

  44. if you've ever learned a really, really simple, basic truth to Christianity later on in your life

  45. and you realize that you probably should have known that a long time ago,

  46. for me that was, I don't think it was until a year ago that I understood that

  47. the reasoning why Jesus needs to be born of a virgin.

  48. I just didn't understand that.

  49. I always just kind of accepted it.

  50. I was like, okay, yeah, Jesus is born of a virgin,

  51. and that's the way things are.

  52. And then when I realized, oh, he needs to be born of a virgin so that he's completely pure and free from sin.

  53. And then I realized, well, I can't let anyone know that I just figured that out

  54. because then they won't think that I'm some like theologically solid rock who knows everything.

  55. Like I can't do that.

  56. I just have to play it off cool.

  57. And yeah, I knew that the whole time.

  58. So the thing is that there are a lot of things that we pass over in Scripture.

  59. So we read this, and I think our natural kind of, if you were to read this in your own time,

  60. if you were to read this on your own, and we read this, we're kind of going to read this and keep going.

  61. It's not like you're going to spend 30 minutes just looking at this text and trying to understand,

  62. well, what does it mean?

  63. How does it apply to my life?

  64. And so on.

  65. We're probably going to move on to chapter three.

  66. But the thing is that we move, we tend to pass over things consciously or subconsciously.

  67. And there's a lot of examples that we can go into this.

  68. And so that's where we're going to kind of go tonight.

  69. Really, I can give a couple examples of these that are going to be kind of tough.

  70. But we neglect the simple things that either Jesus says or Paul says or someone says that we're just not being faithful to.

  71. I'm going to list off three.

  72. It is better to give than it is to receive.

  73. That's something that's very basic, can't get around it, and it means what it means.

  74. But so many of us have such a hard time grasping that truth and really living it out in our lives.

  75. It almost seems like we like to take these truths and we know them,

  76. but then keep going and learn the more complex things.

  77. Another thing would be love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.

  78. And that's something that we know is true.

  79. We know it's true because it's a very simple, straightforward text.

  80. But how often do we live that out in our lives?

  81. If someone hates you where you're at right now, we're definitely probably not going to turn around and love that person.

  82. Someone that might be making fun of us or whatever.

  83. It's just that's a simple truth and somehow we pass over that because it's not necessarily deep.

  84. Another one, and I think this one's really timely, is 1 Timothy 2, verse 1 through 2.

    1 Timothy 2:1–2

  85. You don't have to turn there, but he says,

  86. Real talk.

  87. we cannot, for most of the people,

  88. if you're in the South, most of the people

  89. cannot stand the recently re-elected

  90. president.

  91. And if you don't believe me, then you should

  92. have been on Facebook the day after the election

  93. day.

  94. So much of it blew up.

  95. There's not a single

  96. status that wasn't about that.

  97. People are so frustrated, and if you grew up in a Christian

  98. home, probably your parents still

  99. kind of were on that same side of

  100. definitely not, at least, I'm not

  101. going to say as far as how much we may go into it, but

  102. we definitely don't pray and intercede

  103. for President Obama.

  104. I can't remember the last time that I was

  105. in my house, and my parents

  106. and my family were like, well, let's pray for President

  107. Obama. We really need to pray and

  108. intercede for him. It's a simple

  109. thing like that. That is so simple,

  110. but somehow we make it this very, very

  111. complex thing.

  112. And unfortunately, a lot

  113. of those comments were from a lot of Christians,

  114. from a lot of people who would say they're Christians.

  115. And so we're looking

  116. no different from the world in that.

  117. So why do we do that?

  118. The truth is that pride has caused us

  119. to blatantly pass over

  120. simple truth that's in God's Word.

  121. And God's Word, as much

  122. as we love it,

  123. and as much as we say we love it, is

  124. so inconvenient to our lives.

  125. It is really tough

  126. for us to follow. We deal with these inconvenient

  127. texts like pray for, like honor

  128. the emperor in 1 Peter, or

  129. pray for kings, make intercessions

  130. for them.

  131. And we make it this very

  132. complicated theoretical,

  133. theological

  134. truth. They're like, okay, well, this is what he meant

  135. in this context, and we really need to probably look at the

  136. Greek root of that and understand, well,

  137. what's Paul actually talking about here?

  138. And it's very straightforward.

  139. Paul is saying, you need to make

  140. intercessions and pray for the king.

  141. And our king in this country is

  142. at least President Obama.

  143. And so we kind of, what we do is we kind of

  144. insulate ourselves from these

  145. tough truths like loving your neighbor,

  146. or loving your neighbor, loving your enemies,

  147. praying for kings, praying for

  148. Obama, and we turn into this complex

  149. theoretical jargon, and we

  150. insulate ourselves by that so we don't have

  151. to follow that truth out.

  152. And so

  153. it's a phenomenon, actually, that

  154. was very common in Jesus' time.

  155. The best example that I can give from this

  156. is Luke 10, 25

  157. through 37. So

  158. if you want to turn there, we're not going to read all of it,

  159. but just so you can get kind of equated with the

  160. story, what's going on here.

  161. So

  162. in Luke 10,

  163. Jesus is

  164. talking to his disciples,

  165. and then someone walks up,

  166. and this lawyer walks up to him

  167. and asks him, he says,

  168. what must I do

  169. to

  170. wait, sorry, let me turn to it, actually, I'm going to kind of look at my notes.

  171. Okay, so he says,

  172. what is written, he says,

  173. what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

  174. And so we know the story, Jesus says,

  175. what is written in the law, how do you read it?

  176. And so he says,

  177. you know, I should love my neighbor,

  178. I should love the Lord my God with all my heart, soul, and mind.

  179. And Jesus says, you've judged correctly.

  180. And so

  181. I'm going to give a little excerpt from Martin Luther King Jr.

  182. He wrote this in one of his books called Strength to Love.

  183. He kind of wrote about this,

  184. and he called this phenomenon of where we

  185. overanalyze something, and we don't act on it.

  186. He called this

  187. the paralysis of analysis.

  188. So

  189. we know the story,

  190. we know that

  191. this lawyer is talking to Jesus,

  192. and he says,

  193. teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

  194. So Martin Luther King Jr. picks up right here,

  195. he says,

  196. the ethical concern of this man

  197. is expressed in a magnificent little story

  198. which begins with a theological discussion

  199. on the meaning of eternal life

  200. and concludes in a concrete expression

  201. of compassion on a dangerous road.

  202. Jesus is asked a question by a man

  203. who had been trained in the details of Jewish law.

  204. Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?

  205. The retort is prompt.

  206. What is written in the law?

  207. How readest thou?

  208. After a moment,

  209. the lawyer recites articulately,

  210. thou shalt love the Lord thy God

  211. with all thy heart

  212. and with all thy soul

  213. and with all thy strength

  214. and with all thy mind

  215. and thy neighbor as thyself.

  216. Then comes the decisive word from Jesus,

  217. thou hast answered right.

  218. This do and thou shalt live.

  219. Desiring to justify himself

  220. and to show that Jesus' reply

  221. was far from conclusive,

  222. the lawyer asked,

  223. and who is my neighbor?

  224. The lawyer was now taking up

  225. the cudgels of debate

  226. that might have turned the conversation

  227. into an abstract theological discussion.

  228. But Jesus, determined not to be caught

  229. in the paralysis of analysis,

  230. pulls the question from midair

  231. and places it on a dangerous curve

  232. between Jerusalem and Jericho.

  233. He told the story of a certain man

  234. who went down from Jerusalem to Jericho

  235. and fell among robbers

  236. who stripped him,

  237. beat him,

  238. and departing him,

  239. left him half dead.

  240. By chance,

  241. a certain priest appeared,

  242. but he passed by on the other side.

  243. And after that,

  244. a Levite also passed by.

  245. Finally,

  246. a certain Samaritan,

  247. a half-breed

  248. from a people

  249. with whom the Jews

  250. had no dealings,

  251. appeared.

  252. When he saw the wounded man,

  253. he was moved with compassion,

  254. administered first aid,

  255. and placed him on his breast

  256. and brought him to an inn

  257. and took care of him.

  258. Who is my neighbor?

  259. I do not know this man,

  260. says Jesus in essence.

  261. He is anyone to harm you

  262. or neighborly.

  263. He is anyone who lies in need

  264. at life's roadside.

  265. He is neither Jew nor Gentile.

  266. He is neither Russian nor American.

  267. He is neither Negro nor white.

  268. He is a certain man,

  269. any needy man,

  270. one of the most numerous

  271. Jericho roads of life.

  272. So Jesus defines a neighbor,

  273. not in theological definition,

  274. but in a life situation.

  275. So,

  276. that's the most amazing thing

  277. about Jesus,

  278. is you have this lawyer

  279. who's trying to trap Jesus

  280. and just talking about

  281. theology for a second.

  282. Well,

  283. let's just talk about,

  284. you know,

  285. Jesus,

  286. what do I need to do

  287. to inherit eternal life?

  288. He's like,

  289. you know,

  290. I've done those things,

  291. what else?

  292. And Jesus doesn't allow him

  293. to get away by asking the question,

  294. who is my neighbor?

  295. He doesn't allow it

  296. because he knows

  297. this lawyer is trying to

  298. insulate himself

  299. from action.

  300. And the unfortunate thing

  301. is that

  302. we're kind of in the same place

  303. as that lawyer.

  304. This lawyer kind of wants

  305. this new revelation from Jesus.

  306. Yes,

  307. he's trying to test him,

  308. but he also wants

  309. a new revelation from him.

  310. Who is my neighbor?

  311. Tell me something

  312. I don't know right now.

  313. And Jesus doesn't let him do that.

  314. And the thing is that

  315. we want that new revelation

  316. all the time.

  317. We want to know what's next.

  318. We want to learn more

  319. and it's good

  320. and that's great.

  321. We want to learn more

  322. about the Bible.

  323. But the truth is

  324. is that

  325. what we don't want to learn

  326. is we don't want to be faithful

  327. to the things

  328. that we already know.

  329. We want to learn something new

  330. from a pastor,

  331. a book,

  332. a sermon,

  333. anything.

  334. But we definitely

  335. don't want to

  336. take a break from those things

  337. and leave everything else

  338. and just ask God

  339. what are the things

  340. you've taught me lately

  341. that I'm not being faithful to

  342. right now.

  343. We don't want to be faithful

  344. to those things.

  345. It's much easier

  346. to keep going

  347. and learn new things

  348. than it is

  349. to be faithful to things

  350. that we already have.

  351. And the reason why

  352. we do this

  353. is because we fooled ourselves

  354. into believing

  355. that we can separate

  356. intellectual knowledge

  357. from belief

  358. and obedience.

  359. We believe that we can

  360. separate the two,

  361. that we can divorce them,

  362. but they're never meant

  363. to be like that.

  364. And so,

  365. you're kind of wondering

  366. how that is going to apply

  367. to the text tonight.

  368. I promise I'm going

  369. somewhere with it.

  370. But,

  371. so tonight,

  372. the direction that we're going

  373. is tonight we're going

  374. to look at two examples

  375. of men

  376. who love Christ

  377. so much

  378. and they love

  379. the Philippians

  380. more than themselves

  381. and why that matters

  382. to us.

  383. I'm really excited

  384. about it.

  385. I'm going to pray for us

  386. before we get started.

  387. Father,

  388. thank you so much

  389. for tonight.

  390. God,

  391. I pray that your spirit

  392. would be here

  393. actively working

  394. in the hearts

  395. of everyone

  396. who's in this room.

  397. Father,

  398. what I'm

  399. so afraid of

  400. is not things

  401. running poorly

  402. or not running smoothly,

  403. but God,

  404. what I'm afraid of most

  405. is us coming here

  406. and leaving unchanged

  407. because we haven't

  408. met with you tonight

  409. and you haven't

  410. been here with us

  411. and we haven't

  412. invited you in

  413. to change our hearts.

  414. So,

  415. Father,

  416. would you please

  417. change our hearts

  418. tonight by this text?

  419. We know that your word

  420. is powerful.

  421. There is nothing

  422. wise that I can say

  423. because your power

  424. doesn't rest

  425. in so-called

  426. eloquent wisdom

  427. but God,

  428. it rests in your power.

  429. And I pray that

  430. it would be here

  431. tonight

  432. actively working

  433. in the hearts

  434. of everyone here.

  435. And we ask this

  436. in Christ's name

  437. knowing that you're

  438. going to do it.

  439. Amen.

  440. Okay.

  441. So,

  442. Philippians.

  443. If you've been here

  444. so far,

  445. it's a very encouraging book.

  446. It's a very encouraging book.

  447. But,

  448. every single one of us

  449. is going to say,

  450. every one of us

  451. is lying

  452. if we say that

  453. this book has not

  454. been difficult

  455. to swallow.

  456. There's a lot

  457. in here.

  458. That,

  459. there's a lot

  460. of difficult themes

  461. that are running

  462. through Philippians

  463. so far.

  464. And there's a lot

  465. of difficult verses

  466. that I just wish

  467. were not there.

  468. Let's deal with

  469. the first problem.

  470. Is that Paul

  471. is imprisoned

  472. for selling

  473. Girl Scout cookies?

  474. No.

  475. He's preaching

  476. the gospel

  477. and he's in prison

  478. for that.

  479. But don't worry.

  480. We get that privilege

  481. too of suffering.

  482. Paul hasn't just

  483. left us

  484. to not partake

  485. in that.

  486. He's allowed us

  487. to.

  488. Verse 29

  489. of chapter 1

  490. if you're following

  491. that.

  492. So those are

  493. two things.

  494. Paul is imprisoned.

  495. We also get to

  496. suffer.

  497. What else?

  498. Tell me more

  499. good news.

  500. Well, Paul says

  501. to live is to be

  502. like Christ

  503. and to die

  504. is much better.

  505. That's hard.

  506. Even though we

  507. just say it

  508. so flippantly.

  509. That's verse 22

  510. of chapter 1.

  511. So those are

  512. three things.

  513. And then finally

  514. another point

  515. that I could list

  516. would be

  517. don't be selfish.

  518. Don't look to

  519. your own concerns

  520. but look to

  521. the needs

  522. and concerns

  523. of others

  524. above yourself.

  525. And don't grumble

  526. while doing it.

  527. So these are

  528. tough pills

  529. to swallow.

  530. These are tough

  531. verses.

  532. If we're just

  533. saying this has

  534. been flowers

  535. and sweet tea

  536. the whole time

  537. then we're

  538. lying to ourself.

  539. So let's just

  540. be real with that.

  541. These are tough

  542. texts to follow

  543. with.

  544. And so I think

  545. the camps that

  546. we fall into

  547. is we read this

  548. and we either

  549. say that's

  550. impossible

  551. and that's

  552. nice

  553. but it's

  554. impossible.

  555. We can't

  556. follow this.

  557. Or we say

  558. that is a

  559. beautiful text

  560. and we become

  561. hopelessly

  562. idealistic

  563. and we don't

  564. even really

  565. take the time

  566. to apply it

  567. to our lives.

  568. We just kind

  569. of say

  570. that's a great

  571. text to read.

  572. And so I think

  573. because most of

  574. us find ourselves

  575. in that camp

  576. unless you are

  577. so holy

  578. that you're

  579. doing all

  580. these things

  581. perfectly right

  582. now.

  583. We're finding

  584. that these

  585. texts are hard

  586. to live out.

  587. And so I

  588. think that

  589. there's a

  590. reason why

  591. Paul pauses

  592. here.

  593. If you're

  594. familiar with

  595. scripture at all

  596. you kind of

  597. know that

  598. verse 19

  599. through 30

  600. that's kind

  601. of out of

  602. place.

  603. Usually Paul

  604. will write a

  605. letter and

  606. then he'll

  607. add this bit

  608. at the very

  609. end.

  610. So look

  611. at Galatians,

  612. Ephesians,

  613. Colossians,

  614. Timothy,

  615. all those

  616. books.

  617. And this

  618. is kind

  619. of out of

  620. place because

  621. we usually

  622. call these

  623. travel plans

  624. or greetings

  625. or shout

  626. outs.

  627. But it's

  628. right in the

  629. middle of

  630. the book.

  631. Literally

  632. right in the

  633. middle.

  634. And I don't

  635. think it's

  636. just because

  637. Paul just

  638. got sidetracked.

  639. I think he

  640. puts it there

  641. for a reason.

  642. I think because

  643. God has his

  644. inspired hand

  645. on Paul in

  646. this.

  647. The reason

  648. why I think

  649. that is

  650. for a lot

  651. of reasons.

  652. I'm going

  653. to go on.

  654. But obviously

  655. he keeps going

  656. in chapter 3

  657. so there's a

  658. reason why

  659. he pauses

  660. here and

  661. he gets

  662. narrative on

  663. us.

  664. He doesn't

  665. really do

  666. that in a

  667. lot of his

  668. other letters.

  669. So the two

  670. themes of

  671. Philippians so

  672. far have

  673. been,

  674. the first

  675. one has

  676. been stand

  677. firm and

  678. have unity

  679. amongst the

  680. body.

  681. And then the

  682. second one

  683. would be look

  684. to the interests

  685. of others

  686. ahead of

  687. yourself by

  688. looking to

  689. Christ as

  690. that model.

  691. And so we

  692. said that's

  693. tough.

  694. Those are

  695. tough things to

  696. follow.

  697. And the

  698. thing is I

  699. think he

  700. stops because

  701. he wants to

  702. give examples

  703. of men who

  704. are doing

  705. this.

  706. He doesn't

  707. want us to

  708. get discouraged

  709. and bogged

  710. down or to

  711. become hopelessly

  712. idealistic and

  713. not follow through

  714. with this.

  715. I think he

  716. wants to stop

  717. here and give

  718. examples of

  719. men that are

  720. doing this.

  721. It's almost

  722. like Paul is

  723. saying,

  724. hey stop.

  725. It's not

  726. hopeless.

  727. I know this

  728. is big and

  729. I know this

  730. is a lot

  731. going on but

  732. you don't

  733. have to lose

  734. hope by such

  735. heavy things

  736. that are going

  737. on in this

  738. text.

  739. I think

  740. Paul is

  741. saying just

  742. pause for a

  743. moment.

  744. I promise you

  745. this is not a

  746. lost cause.

  747. I'm not wasting

  748. my time.

  749. I'm not wasting

  750. your time with

  751. something that

  752. you can't do.

  753. Paul pauses

  754. here because

  755. he's going to

  756. give examples of

  757. guys who are

  758. doing this.

  759. He's already

  760. given the

  761. example of

  762. Christ.

  763. And so

  764. ultimately

  765. Christ is our

  766. example.

  767. Timothy and

  768. Epaphrodite

  769. are going to

  770. get to them

  771. and they're

  772. great guys but

  773. they are not

  774. our goal.

  775. They're not our

  776. motivation.

  777. They're not

  778. our motor.

  779. They're not

  780. the end goal

  781. of things.

  782. And so

  783. Christ is.

  784. We kind of

  785. clay went over

  786. that not too

  787. long ago when

  788. he went through

  789. verses 5 through

  790. 11.

  791. So Christ is

  792. the reason that

  793. we're doing

  794. this.

  795. He's our aim.

  796. He's our goal.

  797. If you're not

  798. waking up and

  799. Jesus is the

  800. motivation for

  801. why you are

  802. living a godly

  803. life then we

  804. need to reassess

  805. and reevaluate

  806. what we're doing.

  807. And so

  808. here's why I

  809. say that.

  810. I promise

  811. I'll back

  812. that up.

  813. I think Paul

  814. is pointing

  815. these guys

  816. for a specific

  817. reason.

  818. I don't think

  819. it's random.

  820. So you can

  821. be the judge

  822. of that.

  823. I think

  824. there's a lot

  825. of similarity

  826. in language

  827. in verses

  828. 3 through

  829. 4 of

  830. chapter 2

  831. and then

  832. in verse

  833. 21 and

  834. so on

  835. in this

  836. text.

  837. So

  838. Philippians

  839. 2,

  840. 3 through

  841. 4,

  842. it says

  843. do nothing

  844. from selfish

  845. ambition or

  846. vain conceit

  847. but in humility

  848. count others

  849. more significant

  850. than yourself.

  851. Is it

  852. coincidence

  853. that

  854. Timothy

  855. in verse

  856. 21 is

  857. seeking the

  858. needs of

  859. other people?

  860. He says

  861. this same

  862. language.

  863. He says

  864. for they all

  865. seek their

  866. own interests

  867. but not

  868. those of

  869. Jesus Christ.

  870. Timothy

  871. has proven

  872. his worth.

  873. So Timothy

  874. is doing

  875. that.

  876. Epaphroditus

  877. he also

  878. sought the

  879. needs of

  880. others so

  881. much that

  882. he almost

  883. died by

  884. risking his

  885. life.

  886. life.

  887. He almost

  888. died

  889. risking his

  890. life there.

  891. It's not

  892. a coincidence

  893. that Paul

  894. urges the

  895. unified church

  896. body in

  897. verse 27

  898. and then

  899. goes on to

  900. say that

  901. Timothy is

  902. caring more

  903. about the

  904. affairs of

  905. the church

  906. than his

  907. own life

  908. in verse

  909. 21.

  910. It's not

  911. a coincidence

  912. that Paul

  913. says to

  914. live is

  915. Christ.

  916. That is a

  917. tough thing

  918. to say.

  919. He says

  920. that in

  921. verse 21

  922. of chapter

  923. 1.

  924. And then

  925. Epaphroditus

  926. nearly died

  927. for the

  928. sake of

  929. the gospel.

  930. I don't

  931. think it's

  932. coincidence

  933. that he's

  934. placing these

  935. verses right

  936. here.

  937. And the

  938. thing is

  939. that a lot

  940. of times we

  941. read scripture

  942. with skewed

  943. lenses.

  944. We read

  945. Philippians and

  946. we say that's

  947. beautiful, let's

  948. talk about it,

  949. let's have

  950. discussion groups

  951. about it,

  952. but I don't

  953. want to live

  954. this out because

  955. it's just too

  956. hard, it's

  957. unrealistic.

  958. And the

  959. thing is that

  960. that is common

  961. and paralyzing.

  962. All of us

  963. face that.

  964. That's very

  965. common.

  966. And it's

  967. very paralyzing.

  968. It paralyzes

  969. us from

  970. doing any

  971. work.

  972. And I

  973. think that's

  974. why Paul

  975. places these

  976. verses here so

  977. that we don't

  978. become paralyzed.

  979. So, it is

  980. so vital for

  981. us to be

  982. around men

  983. and women

  984. like Timothy

  985. and Epaphroditus.

  986. If we don't

  987. do that, let's

  988. just say we

  989. just take this

  990. and we just

  991. cut out that

  992. verse, man,

  993. we're going to

  994. lose sight that

  995. the Bible was

  996. intended not

  997. just to be

  998. picked apart

  999. and talked

  1000. about, but

  1001. it was to be

  1002. lived out every

  1003. single day.

  1004. It's vital that

  1005. we surround

  1006. ourselves with

  1007. godly men and

  1008. women who are

  1009. striving for the

  1010. gospel for the

  1011. long haul.

  1012. people.

  1013. I want to surround

  1014. myself with

  1015. those men.

  1016. I know that

  1017. y'all do too.

  1018. I know that I'm

  1019. not alone in

  1020. that.

  1021. I think a

  1022. very dangerous

  1023. thing that we

  1024. could do as

  1025. believers is we

  1026. could make this

  1027. perilous assumption

  1028. that one day we

  1029. will arrive, that

1030. we will be one of

  1031. these men and

  1032. women who are

  1033. standing firm in

  1034. the faith, who

  1035. are here for the

  1036. long haul, but

  1037. we're not

  1038. surrounding

  1039. ourselves by those

  1040. people.

  1041. I think that is

  1042. a perilous thing

  1043. to fall into.

  1044. Say that, you

  1045. know, I'm just

  1046. going to coast

  1047. into holiness.

  1048. I don't think

  1049. there's a single

  1050. person, I could

  1051. ask every single

  1052. person here, do

  1053. you want to turn

  1054. from Christ in

  1055. 40 years?

  1056. No one's going

  1057. to say no.

  1058. Everyone's going

  1059. to say, man, I

  1060. want to be here

  1061. for the long haul,

1062. I want to be in

  1063. it for the long

  1064. run, that we

  1065. want to surround

  1066. ourselves, but the

  1067. thing is that we

  1068. believe that we're

  1069. just going to coast

  1070. into that because

  1071. we're not

  1072. surrounding

  1073. ourselves with

  1074. those people.

  1075. We believe that

  1076. as we get older,

  1077. we're going to

  1078. coast into

  1079. holiness and

  1080. we're going to

  1081. get farther and

  1082. farther away from

  1083. heresy, from

  1084. apostasy, from

  1085. all those things,

  1086. just because of

  1087. the fact that

  1088. we're getting

  1089. older.

  1090. And I think

  1091. that's a really

  1092. dangerous assumption

  1093. to make.

  1094. And here's why I

  1095. think why.

  1096. I'm going to

  1097. read something that

  1098. John Piper wrote

  1099. in his book called

  1100. The Roots of

  1101. Endurance.

  1102. So he says,

  1103. how my mind has

  1104. changed.

  1105. As I complete my

  1106. 50th year as a

  1107. professing Christian,

  1108. I feel the

  1109. urgency of

  1110. endurance more

  1111. than ever.

  1112. I used to think

  1113. differently.

  1114. I used to think

1115. when I was in my

  1116. 20s and 30s that

  1117. sanctification had a

  1118. kind of cumulative

  1119. effect that at

  1120. 50, the likelihood

  1121. of apostasy would be

  1122. far smaller than at

  1123. 30 or 40.

1124. In one sense, this is

  1125. true.

  1126. Surely growth in

  1127. grace and knowledge

  1128. and faith helps us

  1129. to no longer be

  1130. taught to be

  1131. children tossed to

  1132. and fro by the

  1133. ways and carried

  1134. about by every wind

  1135. of doctrine as

  1136. in Ephesians 4.

  1137. He says,

  1138. I see more

  1139. clearly now that

  1140. even after the

  1141. years of such

  1142. growth and

  1143. stability, shocking

  1144. coldness and even

  1145. apostasies are

  1146. possible.

  1147. This is John

  1148. Piper.

  1149. I'm not saying

  1150. he's the greatest

  1151. man to ever walk

  1152. the earth, but

  1153. this is someone

1154. that a lot of us

  1155. would say, this is

  1156. a godly man that

1157. I would love to be

  1158. surrounded by.

  1159. He's saying this.

  1160. He says,

  1161. and I have known

  1162. moments of horrifying

  1163. blankness that made

  1164. me realize my utter

  1165. dependence on the

  1166. mercies of God

  1167. being new every

  1168. morning.

  1169. He says,

  1170. perseverance is a

  1171. gift.

  1172. That I will wake

1173. up and be a believer

  1174. tomorrow morning is

  1175. not finally and

  1176. decisively owing to

  1177. my will, but to

  1178. God.

  1179. I have known too

  1180. many mornings on

  1181. the precipice to

  1182. think otherwise.

  1183. That I have been

  1184. snatched back every

  1185. time is sheer

  1186. mercy.

  1187. The human will

  1188. cannot be

  1189. depended on,

  1190. because in the

  1191. crisis of faith,

  1192. it is precisely

  1193. that same will

  1194. that is weak and

  1195. failing.

  1196. So John Piper

  1197. even knows himself

  1198. well enough to

  1199. say that I don't

  1200. trust myself to

  1201. make it to the

  1202. end.

  1203. I need Christ.

  1204. And so Paul

  1205. gives this example

  1206. of Timothy.

  1207. I just want to

  1208. take a second to

  1209. look at the

  1210. character of

  1211. Timothy.

  1212. I think

  1213. Timothy is an

  1214. excellent example

  1215. of someone who

  1216. has such endurance

  1217. that John Piper is

  1218. talking about.

  1219. And the thing is

  1220. that Paul is

  1221. writing this about

  1222. Timothy, but not a

  1223. lot of people, if

  1224. you've read 2

  1225. Timothy, not a lot

  1226. of people followed

  1227. Paul to the very

  1228. end.

  1229. So Paul is executed

  1230. in 2 Timothy,

  1231. probably after he

  1232. wrote that letter.

  1233. Turn to 2 Timothy 1,

  1234. if you would,

  1235. real quickly.

  1236. Okay.

  1237. So this is the

  1238. final book from

  1239. Paul right before

  1240. he's executed.

  1241. And then, like we

1242. said, the end of the

  1243. book usually has

  1244. travel plans, what's

1245. going on in his life,

  1246. kind of like small

  1247. updates, kind of more

  1248. narrative.

  1249. But 2 Timothy has a

  1250. completely different

  1251. theme.

  1252. Imagine someone writing

  1253. their last letter to

  1254. you, most likely,

  1255. knowing this is their

  1256. last letter before

  1257. they're about to die

1258. for the sake of the

  1259. gospel.

1260. I would key in so

  1261. much to hearing what

  1262. they have to say.

1263. And so, it's kind of

  1264. this very unsettling

  1265. theme that's going

  1266. through 2 Timothy,

  1267. that Paul is talking

  1268. about.

1269. The truth is, is that

  1270. many have actually

  1271. abandoned Paul.

1272. I'm going to point out

  1273. a few ones.

  1274. Verse 15, you are

  1275. aware that all who

  1276. are in Asia turned

  1277. away from me, among

  1278. whom are Phygelus and

  1279. Hermogenes.

1280. So, all of Asia has

  1281. turned away from Paul,

  1282. or at least the

  1283. believers that he

  1284. knows.

  1285. All of them have

  1286. turned away from Paul,

  1287. specifically these two

  1288. guys, Phygelus and

  1289. Hermogenes.

1290. And then turn to, flip

  1291. the next page, chapter

  1292. 4, verse 9.

  1293. Okay.

1294. So he says, do your

1295. best to come to me

  1296. soon, for Demas, in

  1297. love with this present

  1298. world, has deserted

  1299. me and gone to

  1300. Thessalonica.

  1301. Crescens has gone to

  1302. Galatia, Titus to

  1303. Dalmatia.

  1304. Luke alone is with

  1305. me.

  1306. Get Mark and bring

  1307. him with you, for

1308. he is very useful for

  1309. my ministry.

  1310. Demas, I want to

  1311. just, who is this

  1312. guy?

  1313. He left Paul, because

  1314. he's fallen in love

  1315. with the world.

1316. And the thing is, if

1317. you do a word search

  1318. on Demas, he's

  1319. actually someone who's

  1320. been mentioned in

  1321. Paul's letters before.

  1322. Where is he familiar

  1323. from?

  1324. Colossians 4, verse

    Colossians 4:14

  1325. 14.

  1326. Really quick.

  1327. So, he says that

  1328. Demas has left

  1329. him.

  1330. And then he says,

  1331. this is before he

  1332. wrote that, in

  1333. Colossians.

  1334. So, kind of given

  1335. the same orders of

  1336. his travel plans, he

1337. says in verse 14, he

  1338. says, Luke, the

  1339. beloved physician,

  1340. greets you, as does

  1341. Demas.

1342. kind of listing off all

  1343. these people.

  1344. He says, he lists

  1345. Demas as someone who

  1346. was actually with him,

  1347. laboring for the

  1348. gospel.

1349. One more place is in

  1350. Philemon 1, verse 24.

    Philemon 1:24

  1351. So, he's giving more

1352. commands at the end of

  1353. this book, and he

  1354. says, Epaphras, my

  1355. fellow prisoner in

  1356. Christ, Jesus sends

  1357. greetings to you.

  1358. So, we're talking

  1359. about prison here.

  1360. Like, he's listing off

  1361. his prisoners.

  1362. So, he says, Epaphras,

  1363. my fellow prisoner in

  1364. Christ, Jesus sends

  1365. greetings to you.

  1366. And so do Mark,

  1367. Aristarchus, Demas, and

  1368. Luke, my fellow

  1369. workers.

  1370. So, this is a guy who's

  1371. in prison with Paul.

  1372. We're not talking about

1373. a guy that, when the

  1374. going gets rough, I'm

  1375. going to peace out.

  1376. Like, he's not like

  1377. that.

  1378. He's not, this is not a

1379. guy who was just here

1380. because Paul is doing a

  1381. lot of cool things.

  1382. He's doing miracles, and

1383. he agrees with them, and

  1384. he's there.

1385. But as soon as things

  1386. get tough, he backs

  1387. out.

  1388. That's not Demas.

  1389. Demas, that's not him.

1390. This is the guy who's

  1391. been in prison with

  1392. Paul, and probably

  1393. through a lot worse.

1394. And then at the end of

  1395. his letter in 2nd

  1396. Timothy, he's fallen

1397. in love with the world,

  1398. and he's left Paul.

  1399. So, if that's not

  1400. unsettling, that we can

  1401. be in prison for

  1402. Christ.

  1403. And that doesn't mean

  1404. anything.

  1405. It's like, man,

1406. and so the truth is

1407. that we don't know if

  1408. Demas comes back.

  1409. He might.

  1410. He might have come

  1411. back.

1412. But as far as we're

1413. concerned, as far as we

  1414. know in Scripture, there's

  1415. no indication that he

  1416. does.

  1417. It's kind of this

  1418. unsettling thought that you

1419. can be in it and around

1420. people and not endure, and

1421. not be this example that

  1422. Paul's giving in

  1423. Philippians.

  1424. And so, Timothy stays.

1425. And as far as we know, so

  1426. does Epaphroditus.

  1427. Is Timothy flawless?

  1428. No.

  1429. Timothy's not flawless, man.

  1430. He's, in fact, a majority

1431. of 1 Timothy that Paul

1432. writes to Timothy, I mean,

1433. it sounds good because it's

  1434. a book, but it's also

  1435. because Paul's writing this

  1436. to Timothy as instructions

  1437. to Timothy.

1438. Here's some of the things

  1439. that's going on with

  1440. Timothy.

  1441. Timothy is most likely

  1442. backing down from

  1443. preaching the gospel, so

  1444. Paul says, don't back

  1445. down from preaching the

  1446. gospel.

  1447. Preach it boldly.

1448. And then he's not being

  1449. above reproach, and so

  1450. Paul's saying, be above

  1451. reproach.

  1452. And it's possible he's not

  1453. tolerating dissension and

  1454. ungodly teaching in his

  1455. church.

1456. Timothy was a pastor in

  1457. Ephesus, and so he's got a

  1458. lot of cultural influence

  1459. on him.

1460. And so, Timothy's by no

  1461. means flawless.

  1462. He's got a lot that Paul

1463. is instructing him on, and

1464. Paul is asking him to stand

  1465. true to his teaching.

1466. But the truth is that

  1467. Timothy endures.

  1468. God uses flawed, broken

1469. life to be an encouragement

1470. to the Philippians in this

  1471. text.

1472. Not just the past two

  1473. chapters, but because he

  1474. doesn't intend those things

  1475. to just be theoretical.

1476. He gives this example of

  1477. broken, flawed Timothy, and

  1478. Epaphroditus, who I'm sure

  1479. he's got a long list of

  1480. things.

1481. But he gives this example of

1482. these guys that are living

  1483. this out.

1484. And the question is, why?

1485. Why does Paul, Paul does

1486. this, and God puts this there

1487. because God has never intended

1488. his word to solely be

  1489. theoretical.

1490. He, God has always intended

1491. to be applied to our love

1492. and not just our minds.

1493. And so, the thing is, is

1494. that as, if we read

  1495. Philippians like it's a

  1496. biology experiment to be

  1497. dissected, pulled apart,

  1498. studied, and philosophized

1499. over, and that's it, we miss

  1500. the point completely.

1501. So, it's kind of nice that

1502. we have this pause here

1503. because Paul is writing this

  1504. letter, he's giving all

1505. these hard things, and I

  1506. can imagine Paul just

1507. kind of saying, I know

1508. this is tough, I know this

1509. is tough, but I'm going to

1510. give an example of this.

1511. And Paul is saying, don't

1512. miss the purpose of these

  1513. two chapters.

1514. Don't miss the point of

  1515. it.

  1516. Don't overanalyze this, and

1517. just let this be theory.

1518. This needs to affect your

  1519. life like it's affected

  1520. Timothy and Epaphroditus.

1521. So, if you're kind of

  1522. sitting here, and we've

  1523. been reading through

  1524. Philippians, and we've

1525. been talking about it in

  1526. our discussion groups, and

  1527. you've kind of gotten

  1528. discouraged because there's

1529. so much going on, and it

  1530. almost seems impossible to

  1531. live this out.

  1532. Don't be discouraged.

1533. Paul is begging us, don't

  1534. be discouraged.

1535. Here are two guys who you

  1536. know.

1537. Jesus is someone who we've

1538. heard about, and we read

1539. about, but these are two

  1540. guys that we know.

  1541. And so, he's giving

  1542. first-hand examples of

  1543. Timothy and Epaphroditus.

1544. And so, we want, every

1545. single person in this room

1546. wants to be like Epaphroditus

  1547. and Timothy.

1548. We want to endure to the

  1549. end.

1550. And the question is, and

1551. how do we do that?

1552. If we've got so much here in

1553. the text that Paul is giving

1554. us, and then we've got this

  1555. example of Timothy and

  1556. Epaphroditus, and I definitely

  1557. don't feel like a Paul and

  1558. Epaphroditus, or Timothy and

  1559. Epaphroditus all the time.

  1560. I don't feel like, I wonder

1561. what I would do in these

  1562. situations that Timothy was

  1563. put in.

1564. And I think it has two

  1565. responses for that.

1566. How do we keep this when we

1567. know that, Lord, we're prone

  1568. to wander.

1569. I'm just as capable of sin and

  1570. apostasy as Demis is.

1571. And if we tell ourselves that

  1572. we're not, we're fooling

  1573. ourselves.

1574. And so, I'm going to finish

  1575. out, actually, what John

1576. Piper says here in the next

  1577. page.

1578. He says, that is my cry.

1579. He says, let your goodness,

1580. O God, bind my heart with a

  1581. chain to you.

1582. Seal my will to yours with an

  1583. unbreakable application of your

  1584. eternal covenant.

1585. Is this the way that Christians

  1586. should pray?

  1587. Keep me.

  1588. Preserve me.

  1589. Defeat every rising rebellion.

  1590. Overcome every doubt.

1591. Deliver me from every destructive

  1592. temptation.

  1593. Nullify every fatal

  1594. alignment.

  1595. Expose every demonic

  1596. deception.

  1597. Tear down every arrogant

  1598. argument.

  1599. Shape me.

  1600. Incline me.

  1601. Hold me.

  1602. Master me.

1603. Do whatever you must to keep

1604. me trusting you and fearing you

1605. until Jesus comes or calls.

1606. So, I think we keep that by

  1607. crying out to God.

1608. I think it always starts in the

  1609. heart.

1610. If we go straight to hands after

1611. this, like if we just go straight

1612. into applying this to our lives

1613. and just thinking of practical

1614. ways that we can do this, that we

  1615. can be a Timothy and a

1616. Paphroditus, we're going to burn

  1617. out.

1618. You will not make it.

1619. Because we're focused so much on

1620. our actions and we're not

  1621. focused on our hearts.

1622. And so, I think along with that

1623. cry that John Piper is talking

1624. about, it has to start in our

  1625. hearts.

1626. It has to start when we go home

1627. tonight and just thinking about,

1628. Lord, I want to be kept by you.

1629. I want to be all these things that

1630. you're talking about in these

1631. first two chapters of Philippians.

1632. I want to be like Timothy and

1633. Epaphroditus, but I need you to

  1634. keep me.

1635. And so, that's our text for

  1636. tonight.

1637. The thing is that we need to

1638. surround ourselves with godly men

  1639. and women.

1640. And Nathan said this a few times

1641. is that it is so important that

1642. we do more than just hang out with

  1643. college students.

1644. It is so important that we get

  1645. around people with families.

1646. It is important that I get around

1647. Chris and his family and that I get

1648. around to see them, how they

  1649. operate.

  1650. It is so important.

1651. We need someone like that in our

  1652. life.

1653. We need to not just see them on

1654. Sunday, but we need to be there

1655. around their lives to eat with

1656. these families, to break bread

  1657. with them.

1658. And so, as we're concluding this

1659. out, this is such a nice pause for

1660. our discussion groups tonight for

1661. just where we're at because we have

1662. really important questions to ask

  1663. ourselves.

  1664. There's two questions, or there's

1665. three questions that I say, okay,

  1666. just think about.

1667. Because that first part of tonight

1668. where I'm saying that it's easy to

1669. pass over what we're reading so far

  1670. in Philippians.

1671. It's easy to pass over this part

  1672. because it's a narrative.

1673. But the question is that with the

1674. knowledge that you know, knowledge is

  1675. a very great thing, but it's also a

1676. dangerous thing, and everyone will

  1677. tell you that.

1678. And the question is, is what you're

1679. learning here, what you're learning

1680. tonight, what you're reading from even

1681. your own time in the work, is it

1682. leading to a knowledge that puffs up

1683. like Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians 8?

1684. Is it leading to a knowledge that

1685. puffs up, or is it leading to a

1686. knowledge that builds up in love?

1687. Our knowledge is worthless if we don't

  1688. have love.

1689. So what are we doing with that

1690. knowledge that we already have?

1691. You can see Timothy and Epaphroditus

1692. love Paul, and they love the

  1693. Philippians.

  1694. They're great examples.

1695. Christ is our ultimate example, but

  1696. these are great examples.

1697. The next question is, are you being

1698. faithful to the revelation that you

  1699. already have?

1700. Or are we passing over these simple

1701. truths the Bible has made very clear

  1702. to us?

  1703. Non-negotiable truth.

1704. And are we looking for a new

1705. revelation instead of being faithful

  1706. to those things?

1707. Man, a practical way in my life is

1708. sometimes I have to just stop

1709. listening to sermons from like John

1710. Piper or John MacArthur or Matt

  1711. Chandler.

1712. I have to stop because I just like

1713. to listen to those things, and I

1714. don't even think about the fact that,

1715. God, am I even being faithful to

  1716. those things?

1717. Am I just stocking up knowledge

1718. because it's what I like to do?

1719. And then, man, kind of a more deeper

1720. question is, have Jesus' words and

1721. Paul's words, have they lost their

1722. original intention to be lived out

  1723. in your life?

1724. And they're merely just words on a

1725. page that we are just analyzing and

1726. studying, and they have no application

  1727. in our lives.

1728. Those are good places to start.

1729. Let's just be thinking about those as

1730. we're worshiping Christ through our

1731. musical worship and as we get to talk

  1732. to each other tonight.

1733. I love getting to be in these

1734. discussion groups because what I've

1735. loved is having guys and girls in the

1736. group that I get to know their name,

1737. I get to talk about this, but then I

1738. get to pray for them, and we get to ask

1739. each other, man, what's going on in your

  1740. life?

1741. Like, you're telling me what's going on.

1742. Like, just tell me something so I can

  1743. pray for you.

1744. That is what I love so much about it,

1745. and so let's take this and let's ask

1746. ourselves those questions as Wes comes

1747. up and as we break out into discussion

  1748. groups.

1749. Let me just pray for us.

1750. Heavenly Father, you are so good to us.

1751. God, you have not just left us following

1752. a rigid and dogmatic religion that means

1753. nothing to us, that has no impact on our

1754. lives, but God, you have given us truth,

1755. and you've given us men to look to and

1756. women to look to that can encourage us

  1757. to live this out.

1758. Father, thank you that you love us more

1759. than any one of us in this room will

1760. ever understand, and I know I will never

  1761. understand it.

1762. God, I beg you to change my heart over

  1763. this text.

1764. Would you please change the hearts in

1765. this room over this text?

1766. God, I just pray that tonight we would

1767. just pause and, God, invite you in to

1768. change our hearts, maybe in just a small

1769. way, Father, but God, I just pray that you

1770. would change our hearts before we try and

  1771. start changing our actions.

1772. We love you, and you are so good to us.

1773. We pray this in Christ's name.

  1774. Amen.
