  1. Yesterday, I had a conversation with my oldest, Britton, and we were listening to a song on the way home on the radio and she asked if that was this Christian song.

  2. Which is a great question. It allowed me to kind of think about it and how do I want to answer this question.

  3. And I answered it by saying, let's not think about things in just Christian music or Christian books or Christian bookstore or Christian t-shirts or Christian clothing kind of idea.

  4. But let's think about the lyrics and do the lyrics move you to think of God or not.

  5. And in that case, I pushed my 8-year-old, soon to be 9-year-old, to think and use her brain a little bit and not just claim something to be Christian music or Christian TV or Christian movie or whatever.

  6. And so my question this morning kind of got me thinking was, is that the idea of holiness that we should believe?

  7. Where we have our Christian music that we listen to and we have our Christian school we go to and we have our Christian bookstore that we shop in.

  8. And we have our Christian t-shirts that we wear.

  9. And so we're set apart based on the definition of holiness.

  10. If you don't know, that's what holiness means.

  11. We're set apart and we kind of go down this road of this is where we're going to stay.

  12. We're going to stay within the boundaries of the Christian title.

  13. Is that the idea of holiness that we should believe?

  14. I don't think so.

  15. I don't think that that biblically that that lines up with how we should view holiness.

  16. How we should pursue a specific way of living.

  17. Imagine for a moment that we're up in an airplane really, really, really high.

  18. And we look down and we're so high that a forest doesn't look like little individual trees or you can't see the definition of the trees.

  19. It's just a green mass on the land below you.

  20. Now, one can assume, well, that's a forest.

  21. But you can also assume, well, it's green and kind of, well, that's a body of water.

  22. That could be water from this height.

  23. We're not really sure.

  24. And just to claim that it's water or claim that it's something without really knowing what it is, without viewing it on a map and saying, well, that's Cherokee Forest.

  25. That's the National Reserve or whatever.

  26. We cheapen and make a quick assumption by saying, well, that's just water.

  27. Yeah, it looks like water.

  28. That's water.

  29. And I think what we've done with holiness, if we believe that that's how we should pursue holiness is by separating ourselves completely,

  30. then we cheapen that idea and make an assumption that that's what holiness is.

  31. So this morning, I want to bring the plane in a little bit.

  32. I want to look at the forest and I want to see the trees.

  33. I want to see the animals crawling on the ground.

  34. I want to see the different types of trees and see what this holiness really does look like for you and I.

  35. Because when we read Scripture and we have familiar verses and we know just by being a Christian that, well, if God is holy, then we are to be holy.

  36. You guys and all of us in this room would believe, yes.

  37. But what does that mean?

  38. How does that affect the way we live?

  39. How does that affect how we walk out this life?

  40. Or is it just a cheap assumption?

  41. Yes.

  42. I believe that we should be holy.

  43. So that's my goal this morning, to bring that plane down a little bit for us so we can kind of see some details of the forest.

  44. So in 1 Peter 1, we're going to read four verses starting in verse 13.

  45. It says,

  46. Therefore,

  47. Therefore, preparing your minds for action and being sober-minded sets your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  48. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance.

  49. But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.

  50. Since it is written, you shall be holy, for I am holy.

  51. Let's pray together.

  52. Father, I ask for your grace this morning to speak to us clearly.

  53. God, I ask that words that come from my mouth will be true words.

  54. And that all of us in here, including me, would hear from you this morning.

  55. God, I pray that you would help us in the hearing of your word, but also in the action to follow, in the obedience to follow whatever you have laid out for us to do.

  56. Help us.

  57. We cannot do it apart from you.

  58. We beg and we ask in Jesus' name.

  59. Amen.

  60. Amen.

  61. So, we're going to start from verse 16 and work our way back to verse 13.

  62. That's the plan.

  63. Verse 15 and 16 says,

  64. But as he who called you is holy, you will also be holy in all your conduct.

  65. Since it is written, you shall be holy, for I am holy.

  66. So what does God being holy mean?

  67. What does the holiness of God actually mean?

  68. Well, as I mentioned a few minutes ago, the definition is to be set apart.

  69. So how does God become set apart?

  70. How do we set God apart?

  71. Well, here's how.

  72. God is utterly unique.

  73. He is in a class all to himself.

  74. There is no one like him.

  75. No one compares.

  76. He is unequaled.

  77. He is without beginning and without end.

  78. And he has no need for improvement.

  79. He is perfect.

  80. He always is and always will be and always was perfect God.

  81. So, this is who God is.

  82. God is the source of holiness.

  83. God is the author of holiness.

  84. He is holy, perfect, sinless God.

  85. Now, let's think about this for a minute.

  86. One of the Christian terms that we read and we throw out there is the glory of God.

  87. What is the glory of God?

  88. Well, the glory of God is that outward expression of God's holiness.

  89. So, let me help you.

  90. You could say that the sun, the light is the glory of God.

  91. The light that we get from the sun is the glory of God.

  92. The fire is the holiness.

  93. It's the root of that source, of the source of light.

  94. So, just kind of give you a little bit of perspective there.

  95. So, this is who God is.

  96. He is without comparison.

  97. Perfect, holy, sinless.

  98. The source.

  99. He is the sun that our life should revolve around.

  100. So, in verse 15 and 16 in 1 Peter, we have,

  101. Be holy for I am holy.

  102. Now, a little bit of context here for 1 Peter.

  103. And we studied this a few summers ago or a couple years ago.

  104. 1 Peter, Peter writes this letter to the churches in Asia Minor,

  105. which would be modern day Turkey.

  106. Ephesus would have been in this area.

  107. And he's writing to them and he's giving them kind of a warning,

  108. giving a heads up that persecution is headed their way.

  109. Peter is writing from Rome.

  110. He's getting a lot of persecution in Rome

  111. and he sees the Roman Empire moving that direction.

  112. And so, he's writing this to the Christians there,

  113. the churches in Asia Minor,

  114. telling them there's persecution coming

  115. and this is how you should stand firm in it.

  116. This is how you should live because of what's coming your way.

  117. And so, we read this.

  118. And we read our text this morning

  119. and we've got some practical things.

  120. We've got God being holy.

  121. So, I'm hoping to kind of pull all that in together for us,

  122. even with the context of who Peter is writing to.

  123. So, verse 15 and 16,

  124. Be holy for I am holy.

  125. Be holy because God is holy.

  126. We as Christians are to be holy.

  127. Everybody in here who is a Christian,

  128. who has read the Bible,

  129. would shake your head yes to that.

  130. Yes.

  131. So, how can we be holy?

  132. How is it that we can live and be set apart

  133. based on the definition of who God is?

  134. Well, one way, and the main way,

  135. is that we are imitators of God.

  136. We imitate God.

  137. Now, this shouldn't surprise any of you.

  138. If you're a Christian,

  139. your name claims that you're little Christ's.

  140. You are little Christ's.

  141. You're Christians.

  142. We bear His name.

  143. So, it should not surprise us that we are to be imitators.

  144. But what it does mean here

  145. is that our lives should revolve around God.

  146. As the earth revolves around the sun,

  147. our lives should revolve around God.

  148. Meaning, that our lives are consumed with God.

  149. Our lives are all about God.

  150. Our lives are formed by God.

  151. We are called by God,

  152. and we are set apart by God.

  153. We are to imitate God's holiness.

  154. The question is, how?

  155. How do we do that then?

  156. Where is the practical?

  157. So, let's bring this plane in a little bit more.

  158. So, how?

  159. Well, based on our text,

  160. the first thing we need to do

  161. is that we need to admit

  162. God has called us out of darkness into light.

  163. Look at verse 15.

  164. It says,

  165. But as He who called you is holy,

  166. you will also be holy in all your conduct.

  167. Now,

  168. I chose this verb,

  169. admit,

  170. on purpose.

  171. That we need to admit

  172. that God has called us out of darkness.

  173. We must admit

  174. that it was God's act on our lives.

  175. And nothing in us that caused God to call us,

  176. or that even we called on Him.

  177. Colossians 1,

  178. 13 and 14 says that

  179. He has delivered us

  180. from the domain of darkness

  181. and transferred us

  182. to the kingdom of His beloved Son,

  183. in whom we have redemption,

  184. the forgiveness of sins.

  185. So, if you caught it there,

  186. He has, being God,

  187. delivered us from the domain of darkness.

  188. He has delivered us,

  189. He's pulled us out,

  190. and He has transferred us

  191. to the kingdom of His beloved Son.

  192. God's action on our lives.

  193. Basic gospel truth,

  194. but very important.

  195. Romans 3,

  196. Colossians 2,

  197. Colossians 1,

  198. what we just read,

  199. tells us that we are dead

  200. in our trespasses and sins.

  201. For the wages of sin is death.

  202. For all have sinned

  203. and fallen short of the glory of God.

  204. We have nothing in us

  205. that has deserved or earned God's favor.

  206. It is God's grace to us

  207. to bestow on us.

  208. God's favor to give us life

  209. and to pull us from darkness into light.

  210. So, when we admit this truth,

  211. when we admit that God has called us

  212. out of darkness into light,

  213. then we accept that truth.

  214. Then we acknowledge that truth.

  215. And when we accept,

  216. we are humbled.

  217. We are moved to humility

  218. because of that grace

  219. and that mercy that He has shown us.

  220. In James 4, verse 6,

    James 4:6

  221. it says,

  222. God opposes the proud,

  223. but gives grace to the humble.

  224. Verse 10 of that same chapter

  225. in James 4,

  226. Humble yourself before the Lord

  227. and He will exalt you.

  228. Humility is important for the Christian.

  229. We must acknowledge

  230. the grace and the mercy

  231. that we have been shown.

  232. We live in light of that.

  233. We love other people

  234. in light of that.

  235. We make decisions in light of that.

  236. Not because we have earned it,

  237. but because He has shown us

  238. grace and favor.

  239. In Isaiah chapter 6,

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  240. Isaiah writes and tells the story

  241. of being in the throne room of God.

  242. And Isaiah is face to face with God.

  243. Face to face in the same room

  244. with His holiness and His righteousness.

  245. God perfect without comparison.

  246. And what is Isaiah moved to?

  247. Immediately to his knees to worship.

  248. And he says,

  249. woe is me,

  250. for I am a sinner.

  251. Humility will and can lead

  252. to holiness for us

  253. when we acknowledge and we admit

  254. that God,

  255. it is God on our lives

  256. delivering us

  257. and as Colossians said,

  258. transferring us

  259. from darkness into light.

  260. So we've got to admit,

  261. we've got to admit

  262. that God has called us

  263. out of darkness into light.

  264. But we also have to admit

  265. as Christians

  266. that we are children of God.

  267. As we bear His name,

  268. little Christ,

  269. we are children of God.

  270. Look at verse 14 of 1 Peter.

  271. It says,

  272. as obedient children,

  273. do not be conformed

  274. to the passions

  275. of your former ignorance.

  276. Now,

  277. to understand

  278. that we are children of God

  279. is important.

  280. It's important because

  281. it shows that God

  282. has changed us

  283. from the inside out.

  284. Now,

  285. I have four kids

  286. and my four kids

  287. are always going to be

  288. my kids.

  289. I can't change the fact.

  290. Now,

  291. legally,

  292. sure,

  293. we can make an argument.

  294. But blood-wise,

  295. they're always going to have

  296. my blood in them.

  297. They're always going to be

  298. mine.

  299. I can't do anything

  300. about that.

  301. But God,

  302. God can change

  303. a heart

  304. and make it His.

  305. God can change

  306. a person

  307. and transfer them

  308. from darkness

  309. into light

  310. to make them

  311. a child of wrath,

  312. as Ephesians 2 says,

  313. to a child

  314. born

  315. son or daughter

  316. of the King.

  317. Turn to Ephesians 2,

  318. as I just kind of

  319. mentioned.

  320. Ephesians 2.

  321. If you love the Gospel,

  322. you believe the Gospel,

  323. then you are familiar

  324. with Ephesians 2,

  325. I hope.

  326. Ephesians 2.

  327. Ephesians 2.

  328. Starting in verse 1,

  329. it says,

  330. And you were dead

  331. in the trespasses

  332. and sins

  333. in which you once walked,

  334. following the course

  335. of this world,

  336. following the prince

  337. of the power of the air,

  338. the spirit

  339. that is now at work

  340. in the sons of disobedience,

  341. among whom

  342. we all once lived

  343. in the passions

  344. of our flesh,

  345. carrying out

  346. the desires

  347. of the body

  348. and the mind,

  349. and were by nature

  350. children of wrath

  351. like the rest

  352. of mankind.

  353. But God,

  354. being rich in mercy

  355. because of the great love

  356. with which he loved us,

  357. even when we were dead

  358. in our trespasses,

  359. made us alive

  360. together with Christ.

  361. By grace,

  362. you have been saved.

  363. And raised us up with him

  364. and seated us with him

  365. in the heavenly places

  366. in Christ Jesus,

  367. so that in the coming age

  368. he might show

  369. the immeasurable riches

  370. of his grace

  371. and kindness toward us

  372. in Christ Jesus.

  373. So not only has he taken us

  374. from darkness

  375. into light,

  376. we were dead

  377. and now alive,

  378. we were children of wrath

  379. and now we're children

  380. of the King.

  381. This is important

  382. because it is God

  383. who has made that change

  384. in us.

  385. We can't make that change.

  386. We can't do it.

  387. Jesus says

  388. in one of the Gospels,

  389. and I apologize

  390. because I could not find it

  391. this morning,

  392. but it's true,

  393. I promise.

  394. He talks about

  395. how an earthly father,

  396. when a son asks for bread,

  397. will not give him a stone.

  398. And he says,

  399. how much greater

  400. will your heavenly father

  401. then provide for you?

  402. I will provide for my kids

  403. as much to the end

  404. of my ability,

  405. but how much greater

  406. will that heavenly father,

  407. our heavenly father,

  408. as Christians,

  409. children of God,

  410. provide for us,

  411. care for us,

  412. love us,

  413. nurture us.

  414. This is who

  415. our heavenly father is.

  416. And we are children

  417. children of this king.

  418. So with a heart change

  419. then,

  420. we will not be conformed,

  421. back to 1 Peter 1,

  422. we will not be conformed

  423. to the passions

  424. of our former ignorance.

  425. A new heart

  426. means new passions

  427. and new desires.

  428. A new heart

  429. means that those passions

  430. and those desires

  431. lead to holiness,

  432. not to

  433. fill in the blank,

  434. sin.

  435. A new heart

  436. means that

  437. our want-tos

  438. change.

  439. We want to

  440. pursue holiness.

  441. We want to

  442. honor God.

  443. We want to

  444. love Jesus.

  445. We want to

  446. share the gospel.

  447. We want to live

  448. in such a way

  449. this passion,

  450. this desire,

  451. has no limits

  452. before Christ.

  453. Why do you think

  454. the commandment says

  455. do not covenant

  456. another man's wife?

  457. There are no limits

  458. to the passion

  459. and the desires.

  460. Somebody else's stuff.

  461. There are no limits

  462. to that.

  463. It's whatever

  464. fulfills that hunger

  465. in us.

  466. Well,

  467. when our heart

  468. is changed,

  469. when we become

  470. children of God,

  471. those desires

  472. change and those

  473. passions are

  474. fulfilled with

  475. only one thing

  476. and that is God.

  477. That is His holiness

  478. and that is Him

  479. Himself.

  480. When our hearts

  481. are changed,

  482. we will not

  483. desire the gift.

  484. We'll enjoy the gift,

  485. but we won't

  486. desire the gift.

  487. We will desire

  488. the giver of the gift

  489. who is God.

  490. We'll desire

  491. what He gives us

  492. and we'll look

  493. for opportunities

  494. and situations

  495. and things we can do

  496. with that item,

  497. with that gift

  498. that will bring honor

  499. and glory to Him

  500. and not

  501. fulfillment

  502. for us.

  503. That's an example

  504. of the change

  505. in us.

  506. A new heart

  507. changes.

  508. So our heart

  509. has changed.

  510. Our passion

  511. has changed.

  512. So our desires

  513. and passions

  514. now lead to

  515. holiness.

  516. Pursuing holiness.

  517. So thirdly,

  518. first,

  519. admit God

  520. has called us

  521. out of darkness

  522. into light.

  523. Admit that as

  524. Christians we are

  525. children of God,

  526. meaning that God

  527. has changed us,

  528. given us a new

  529. heart,

  530. now sons and

  531. daughters of the

  532. King.

  533. Thirdly,

  534. we place our hope

  535. in our future.

  536. We place our hope

  537. in our future.

  538. Verse 13,

  539. the second part

  540. of verse 13

  541. says,

  542. set your hope

  543. fully on the

  544. grace that will

  545. be brought to you

  546. at the revelation

  547. of Jesus Christ.

  548. Now,

  549. this does not

  550. mean or is

  551. suggesting a

  552. flight into

  553. dreamland

  554. thinking

  555. of future,

  556. hoping that

  557. maybe that

  558. thought of our

  559. future glory

  560. will dull

  561. the life

  562. here,

  563. what we're going

  564. through,

  565. the persecution

  566. or the struggle

  567. or the whatever.

  568. That's not what

  569. he's suggesting

  570. here.

  571. As if it's some

  572. sort of drug

  573. that just kind of

  574. numbs us and we

  575. just kind of keep

  576. going through and

  577. just ho-hum.

  578. That's not what

  579. he's suggesting.

  580. What he's suggesting

  581. is that instead

  582. of viewing the

  583. present circumstance,

  584. we view it in

  585. light of what's

  586. to come,

  587. the promises

  588. of God.

  589. we view the

  590. situation saying

  591. we can endure

  592. because of

  593. the promise

  594. of God

  595. that we will

  596. overcome,

  597. the promise

  598. of God

  599. that we will

  600. be perfected,

  601. that though my

  602. body breaks

  603. and I'm sick

  604. and I am

  605. suffering and I

  606. have cancer

  607. or whatever,

  608. my body will be

  609. perfected eventually

  610. and I'm okay

  611. with this situation

  612. now because

  613. hopefully in those

  614. situations I can

  615. bring glory to God

  616. and I can pursue

  617. holiness with a

  618. new heart.

  619. So,

  620. we endure

  621. because of what

  622. God will do,

  623. has done even.

  624. The church in

  625. Asia Minor,

  626. remember Peter is

  627. writing to them,

  628. warning them of

  629. what's to come.

  630. Guys,

  631. it's coming your

  632. way.

  633. Gather up,

  634. get together,

  635. understand,

  636. realize,

  637. look at chapter

  638. 1,

  639. verse 3,

  640. it says,

  641. blessed be the

  642. God and Father

  643. of the Lord

  644. Jesus Christ,

  645. according to

  646. His great mercy,

  647. He has caused

  648. us to be born

  649. again to what?

  650. To a living

  651. hope.

  652. Third sentence,

  653. second sentence,

  654. whatever it is,

  655. He's already

  656. saying look ahead

  657. to what's to

  658. come.

  659. Look ahead to

  660. your future

  661. hope.

  662. And hope in

  663. that because of

  664. what's to come.

  665. Their persecution,

  666. heavy persecution.

  667. Kids,

  668. vegetables,

  669. don't usually

  670. go together.

  671. But you tell a

  672. child,

  673. you say,

  674. eat your

  675. vegetables and

  676. you can have

  677. cake.

  678. What are they

  679. going to do?

  680. They're going to

  681. eat their

  682. vegetables.

  683. You put that

  684. cake in front of

  685. them,

  686. those vegetables

  687. are gone.

  688. Likewise,

  689. for us,

  690. we endure,

  691. we go through

  692. struggles,

  693. we suffer here

  694. on earth,

  695. we have

  696. physical ailments,

  697. we live in

  698. such a way,

  699. we pursue

  700. holiness,

  701. even in

  702. those situations,

  703. looking ahead

  704. to what's to

  705. come.

  706. We're going to

  707. be perfected.

  708. God is going

  709. to receive glory

  710. through the way

  711. that I live

  712. this out.

  713. Our desert,

  714. I know

  715. illustrations fall

  716. short,

  717. but our

  718. desert is to

  719. come.

  720. Fourthly,

  721. this is where

  722. we'll spend a

  723. little bit more

  724. time.

  725. So not only

  726. do we admit

  727. that God has

  728. called us

  729. out of darkness

  730. into light,

  731. not only do we

  732. admit that as

  733. Christians we are

  734. children of God,

  735. meaning we have a

  736. new heart,

  737. that God has

  738. changed our

  739. heart from the

  740. inside out,

  741. we cannot do

  742. it.

  743. Not only do we

  744. place our hope

  745. in our future,

  746. but fourthly and

  747. finally,

  748. we prepare our

  749. minds for

  750. action.

  751. Verse 13,

  752. therefore,

  753. preparing your

  754. minds for

  755. action and

  756. being sober

  757. minded,

  758. set your

  759. hope fully

  760. on the grace

  761. that will be

  762. brought to you

  763. at the

  764. revelation of

  765. Jesus Christ.

  766. Preparing your

  767. minds for

  768. action.

  769. If you have

  770. an ESV

  771. Bible and

  772. you're reading

  773. in it,

  774. there's a

  775. footnote

  776. that says

  777. in the

  778. Greek,

  779. it's actually

  780. gird up the

  781. loins of

  782. your mind.

  783. Now this

  784. picture that

  785. Peter is

  786. painting for

  787. us is

  788. back in

  789. this time,

  790. they would

  791. wear long

  792. dress-like

  793. tunics.

  794. And if

  795. they're just

  796. talking in

  797. the marketplace,

  798. if they're

  799. just slowly

  800. meandering,

  801. if they're

  802. just hanging

  803. out at home,

  804. it's all the

  805. way down to

  806. their ankles

  807. or close to

  808. that.

  809. But when

  810. they're working,

  811. when they're

  812. getting ready to

  813. run or going

  814. into war or

  815. whatever,

  816. they pull that

  817. up and they

  818. tuck it into

  819. their belt.

  820. And that's

  821. called girding

  822. their loins.

  823. It's getting

  824. ready,

  825. freeing up

  826. their legs

  827. so that

  828. they can

  829. be men

  830. or women

  831. of action,

  832. men of

  833. action,

  834. so that

  835. they can

  836. run and

  837. they can

  838. fight and

  839. they can

  840. do these

  841. things,

  842. they can

  843. work in

  844. their

  845. garden or

  846. whatever,

  847. freely.

  848. This is the

  849. idea,

  850. preparing your

  851. minds for

  852. action and

  853. being sober

  854. minded.

  855. It's an

  856. act of

  857. preparation

  858. for active

  859. work.

  860. So,

  861. I love

  862. golf.

  863. I love

  864. playing

  865. golf.

  866. I'm not

  867. good at

  868. golf.

  869. I enjoy

  870. every bit

  871. of it.

  872. I enjoy

  873. buying new

  874. golf balls.

  875. That's

  876. silly,

  877. I know.

  878. I just

  879. love playing.

  880. I love

  881. being outside

  882. and walking.

  883. I like

  884. how manicured

  885. it is and

  886. just everything

  887. about golf,

  888. even if I

  889. hit a bad

  890. shot.

  891. Now,

  892. I am not

  893. going to get

  894. any better

  895. if I just

  896. play golf

  897. three or

  898. four times

  899. a year.

  900. I'm going

  901. to probably

  902. maybe get

  903. worse or

  904. just kind

  905. of stay

  906. right where

  907. I am.

  908. It's not

  909. going to

  910. happen.

  911. You've

  912. got to

  913. put time

  914. in.

  915. You've

  916. got to

  917. practice.

  918. You've

  919. got to

  920. make

  921. commitments

  922. to prepare

  923. for times

  924. and wanting

  925. to get

  926. better and

  927. putting in

  928. those hard

  929. work.

  930. All those

  931. phrases that

  932. you find on

  933. milk commercials

  934. and NFL

  935. commercials,

  936. all those,

  937. put in the

  938. hard work.

  939. Likewise,

  940. holiness

  941. takes practice

  942. and takes

  943. preparation,

  944. preparation,

  945. preparing our

  946. minds.

  947. Now see,

  948. unlike golf,

  949. where golf is

  950. just my

  951. ability,

  952. there's no

  953. supernatural power

  954. out on the

  955. golf course.

  956. I mean,

  957. maybe,

  958. if I hit it

  959. straight,

  960. possibly.

  961. But for the

  962. most part,

  963. it's just me

  964. and the golf

  965. ball and the

  966. golf club.

  967. But for us,

  968. holiness,

  969. it's God

  970. in us that

  971. can empower

  972. us and

  973. strengthen us

  974. and push

  975. us to do

  976. what He has

  977. commanded us

  978. to do.

  979. He can

  980. accomplish

  981. what He

  982. commands

  983. through us

  984. and through

  985. the Holy

  986. Spirit.

  987. So preparing

  988. our minds,

  989. girding up

  990. our loins.

  991. So,

  992. the next

  993. thing it

  994. says in

  995. this verse

  996. is,

  997. and being

  998. sober-minded.

  999. A definition

  1000. of this is

  1001. complete clarity

  1002. of mind

  1003. and it's

  1004. resulting in

  1005. good judgment.

  1006. So,

  1007. I know

  1008. all of us

  1009. in here have

  1010. made really

  1011. bad choices

  1012. at some

  1013. point in

  1014. our life.

  1015. We made

  1016. a bad

  1017. decision.

  1018. We

  1019. didn't have

  1020. good judgment.

  1021. We weren't

  1022. sober-minded

  1023. in that

  1024. moment.

  1025. Peter,

  1026. when writing

  1027. this,

  1028. knew that

  1029. this world,

  1030. the cares

  1031. of this

  1032. world,

  1033. the temptress

  1034. of stuff,

  1035. the difficulties

  1036. and the

  1037. persecutions,

  1038. speaking to

  1039. the church

  1040. in Asia

  1041. Minor,

  1042. but even

  1043. to us

  1044. today,

  1045. can

  1046. intoxicate

  1047. us as

  1048. much as

  1049. alcohol can.

  1050. When we're

  1051. intoxicated,

  1052. we are

  1053. controlled by

  1054. that substance.

  1055. We don't

  1056. have much of a

  1057. say.

  1058. It's controlling

  1059. us to a

  1060. specific point.

  1061. And the

  1062. desires of

  1063. this world,

  1064. the things

  1065. that we want,

  1066. the things

  1067. that we think

  1068. we need,

  1069. the boyfriend,

  1070. the girlfriend,

  1071. the husband,

  1072. the wife,

  1073. the car,

  1074. the house,

  1075. fill in the

  1076. blank,

  1077. the specific

  1078. grade that

  1079. you think

  1080. you need,

  1081. all of

  1082. this can

  1083. intoxicate

  1084. us,

  1085. can consume

  1086. us.

  1087. And so

  1088. Peter is

  1089. warning the

  1090. churches in

  1091. Asia Minor

  1092. and warning

  1093. us today,

  1094. be sober

  1095. minded,

  1096. be of good

  1097. judgment,

  1098. complete clarity

  1099. of mind,

  1100. knowing what

  1101. was headed

  1102. their way,

  1103. knowing what

  1104. we deal

  1105. with even

  1106. today.

  1107. Turn to

  1108. Philippians

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  1109. chapter 4.

  1110. So we need

  1111. to have a

  1112. clear mind

  1113. so that we

  1114. can think

  1115. on godly

  1116. things,

  1117. that we can

  1118. think on

  1119. God and

  1120. His holiness

  1121. so that we

  1122. can pursue

  1123. Him and

  1124. Him alone.

  1125. In

  1126. Philippians

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  1127. chapter 4,

  1128. Paul is

  1129. getting ready

  1130. to close

  1131. this letter

  1132. to the

  1133. church of

  1134. Philippi

  1135. and he

  1136. says,

  1137. finally

  1138. brothers,

  1139. whatever is

  1140. true,

  1141. whatever is

  1142. honorable,

  1143. whatever is

  1144. just,

  1145. whatever is

  1146. pure,

  1147. whatever is

  1148. lovely,

  1149. whatever is

  1150. commendable,

  1151. if there is

  1152. any excellence,

  1153. if there is

  1154. anything worthy

  1155. of praise,

  1156. think about

  1157. these things.

  1158. Here's the

  1159. kicker here,

  1160. is God

  1161. is these

  1162. things.

  1163. Who is

  1164. honorable?

  1165. Who is

  1166. just?

  1167. Who is

  1168. pure?

  1169. Who is

  1170. lovely?

  1171. Who is

  1172. commendable?

  1173. Who is

  1174. excellent?

  1175. Who is

  1176. worthy of

  1177. praise?

  1178. Think of

  1179. these things.

  1180. God

  1181. encompasses

  1182. all of

  1183. those

  1184. things.

  1185. He is

  1186. all of

  1187. those

  1188. things.

  1189. Now,

  1190. there's

  1191. other

  1192. things

  1193. that

  1194. from

  1195. God

  1196. we

  1197. can

  1198. think

  1199. on.

  1200. Think

  1201. on His

  1202. word.

  1203. Think

  1204. on our

  1205. brothers and

  1206. sisters in need.

  1207. Think

  1208. on our

  1209. brothers and

  1210. sisters who

  1211. are pursuing

  1212. holiness.

  1213. They are

  1214. from Him

  1215. and out

  1216. of His

  1217. work.

  1218. So,

  1219. in 1 Peter

  1220. in verse

  1221. 13,

  1222. it says,

  1223. therefore,

  1224. preparing your

  1225. minds for

  1226. action.

  1227. Now,

  1228. what we

  1229. have here

  1230. is a

  1231. present tense.

  1232. Preparing

  1233. your minds.

  1234. It doesn't

  1235. say,

  1236. prepare your

  1237. minds.

  1238. It doesn't

  1239. say,

  1240. since you

  1241. have prepared

  1242. your minds.

  1243. It's just

  1244. preparing.

  1245. So,

  1246. this is a

  1247. continuous

  1248. action by

  1249. you and

  1250. by me.

  1251. Meaning,

  1252. that if you

  1253. are going to

  1254. the movie,

  1255. prepare your

  1256. minds for

  1257. what you

  1258. may see

  1259. or hear.

  1260. If you

  1261. are going

  1262. to class,

  1263. prepare your

  1264. minds for

  1265. the opportunity

  1266. to share

  1267. the gospel.

  1268. Remember the

  1269. definition of

  1270. sober-minded,

  1271. complete clarity

  1272. of mind and

  1273. its resulting

  1274. good judgment.

  1275. Sober-minded,

  1276. preparing our

  1277. minds for

  1278. action,

  1279. whenever,

  1280. wherever we

  1281. go,

  1282. preparing our

  1283. minds for

  1284. that action.

  1285. Your

  1286. holiness and

  1287. my holiness

  1288. depends on

  1289. it.

  1290. Now,

  1291. here's the

  1292. beauty of

  1293. the gospel.

  1294. Here's the

  1295. beauty of

  1296. the gospel.

  1297. God is

  1298. holy and

  1299. He is the

  1300. source of

  1301. holiness.

  1302. And in

  1303. Christ,

  1304. if you are

  1305. a Christian

  1306. in this

  1307. room,

  1308. if you have

  1309. confessed your

  1310. sins and you

  1311. believe that

  1312. Jesus died for

  1313. your sins and

  1314. you are a

  1315. Christian,

  1316. then in

  1317. Christ,

  1318. you are

  1319. holy before

  1320. God.

  1321. In Christ,

  1322. you stand as

  1323. if no sin

  1324. had ever been

  1325. committed.

  1326. You stand

  1327. set apart.

  1328. Right now,

  1329. here in

  1330. this room,

  1331. we get

  1332. done,

  1333. we pray,

  1334. we leave,

  1335. we drive

  1336. down the

  1337. road,

  1338. we make a

  1339. bad choice

  1340. on the

  1341. road,

  1342. we say

  1343. something we

  1344. shouldn't

  1345. have said,

  1346. we struggle,

  1347. we have

  1348. difficulties here

  1349. on earth,

  1350. because sin

  1351. still is in

  1352. us.

  1353. But here on

  1354. earth,

  1355. we have the

  1356. power of

  1357. Christ through

  1358. the Holy

  1359. Spirit in

  1360. us to

  1361. pursue holiness,

  1362. to strive to

  1363. be holy,

  1364. to prepare

  1365. our minds,

  1366. to be

  1367. sober-minded

  1368. with God

  1369. in us,

  1370. and we can

  1371. live in

  1372. His power.

  1373. So verse

  1374. 13 starts

  1375. with

  1376. therefore.

  1377. Therefore,

  1378. preparing your

  1379. minds for

  1380. action.

  1381. Now,

  1382. this

  1383. therefore is

  1384. there for

  1385. a reason.

  1386. In light of

  1387. what I've

  1388. just said,

  1389. prepare

  1390. your minds

  1391. for action.

  1392. Well,

  1393. what has

  1394. He just

  1395. said?

  1396. Let's

  1397. start reading

  1398. in 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1:3

  1399. chapter 1,

  1400. verse 3.

  1401. Blessed be

  1402. the God

  1403. and Father

  1404. of our

  1405. Lord Jesus

  1406. Christ.

  1407. According

  1408. to His

  1409. great mercy,

  1410. He has

  1411. caused us

  1412. to be

  1413. born again

  1414. to a

  1415. living hope

  1416. to the

  1417. resurrection

  1418. of Jesus

  1419. Christ from

  1420. the dead,

  1421. to an

  1422. inheritance

  1423. that is

  1424. imperishable,

  1425. undefiled,

  1426. and unfading,

  1427. kept in

  1428. heaven for

  1429. you,

  1430. who by

  1431. God's

  1432. power are

  1433. being guarded

  1434. through faith

  1435. for a

  1436. salvation

  1437. ready to

  1438. be revealed

  1439. in the

  1440. last time.

  1441. In this

  1442. you rejoice,

  1443. though now

  1444. for a little

  1445. while,

  1446. if necessary,

  1447. you have

  1448. been grieved

  1449. by various

  1450. trials,

  1451. so that the

  1452. tested genuineness

  1453. of your

  1454. faith,

  1455. more precious

  1456. than gold

  1457. that perishes,

  1458. though it is

  1459. tested by fire,

  1460. may be found

  1461. to result in

  1462. praise and

  1463. glory and

  1464. honor at the

  1465. revelation of

  1466. Jesus Christ.

  1467. Though you have

  1468. not seen Him,

  1469. you love Him.

  1470. Though you do

  1471. not now see

  1472. Him,

  1473. you believe

  1474. in Him

  1475. and rejoice

  1476. with joy

  1477. that is

  1478. inexpressible

  1479. and filled

  1480. with glory,

  1481. obtaining the

  1482. outcome of

  1483. your faith,

  1484. the salvation

  1485. of your

  1486. souls.

  1487. This salvation

  1488. is through

  1489. who?

  1490. Jesus Christ.

  1491. Blessed be the

  1492. God and Father

  1493. of our Lord

  1494. Jesus Christ.

  1495. To His great

  1496. mercy,

  1497. He has

  1498. caused us

  1499. to be born

  1500. again to a

  1501. living hope.

  1502. It is God

  1503. in us,

  1504. through us,

  1505. that we are

  1506. able to pursue

  1507. holiness,

  1508. that we are

  1509. able to do

  1510. any of these

  1511. things,

  1512. that we are

  1513. able to repent

  1514. and confess

  1515. and believe.

  1516. It is by

  1517. God's power,

  1518. by this great

  1519. salvation that we

  1520. have,

  1521. that the Holy

  1522. Spirit in us,

  1523. Jesus in us,

  1524. that we can

  1525. admit that God

  1526. has called us

  1527. out of darkness.

  1528. We can admit it

  1529. that God has

  1530. called us out

  1531. of darkness

  1532. and into light.

  1533. that we were

  1534. enemies of God

  1535. and now we

  1536. are children

  1537. of God.

  1538. We have to

  1539. admit that we

  1540. are children

  1541. of God,

  1542. that He has

  1543. changed the

  1544. heart in us,

  1545. made us sons

  1546. and daughters

  1547. of the King

  1548. through Jesus

  1549. Christ.

  1550. We can place

  1551. our hope in

  1552. God and our

  1553. future and His

  1554. future plan,

  1555. not our own.

  1556. Some of you

  1557. are college

  1558. students in here

  1559. and you have

  1560. your ideas of

  1561. what you're

  1562. going to do

  1563. and where

  1564. you're going

  1565. to go.

  1566. You have no

  1567. idea where

  1568. you're going

  1569. to go.

  1570. You think

  1571. you know.

  1572. William,

  1573. you can relate

  1574. to this.

  1575. You think

  1576. you know

  1577. where you're

  1578. going.

  1579. You really

  1580. don't.

  1581. But God

  1582. does.

  1583. God knows

  1584. what you're

  1585. going to

  1586. encounter.

  1587. God knows

  1588. what struggles

  1589. you're going

  1590. to face.

  1591. God knows

  1592. what joys

  1593. you're going

  1594. to have.

  1595. God knows

  1596. what will

  1597. become of

  1598. you in

  1599. your life.

  1600. And that's

  1601. okay.

  1602. That's good.

  1603. We can

  1604. settle.

  1605. We can

  1606. be comforted

  1607. in that.

  1608. We can

  1609. place our

  1610. hope in

  1611. God.

  1612. And then

  1613. finally,

  1614. we can prepare

  1615. our minds

  1616. for action.

  1617. We can be

  1618. sober-minded.

  1619. We can make

  1620. right judgments.

  1621. We can be

  1622. in the right

  1623. place in

  1624. our minds

  1625. to make

  1626. good decisions,

  1627. to pursue

  1628. holiness,

  1629. not be

  1630. intoxicated

  1631. by this

  1632. world,

  1633. not be

  1634. wooed

  1635. by what

  1636. this world

  1637. has to

  1638. offer.

  1639. A lot

  1640. of this

  1641. stuff here

  1642. in this

  1643. world is

  1644. not bad.

  1645. God

  1646. created it.

  1647. But the

  1648. problem is

  1649. what intoxicated

  1650. us is when

  1651. we think

  1652. we need

  1653. that over

  1654. God.

  1655. When we

  1656. pursue

  1657. that.

  1658. over

  1659. God.

  1660. That's not

  1661. holiness.

  1662. That's sin.

  1663. Little change.

  1664. Change in

  1665. our thinking.

  1666. Our want

  1667. to's change.

  1668. Our desires

  1669. and passions

  1670. change because

  1671. God has

  1672. acted in

  1673. us.

  1674. So I

  1675. pray for

  1676. all of us

  1677. in here that

  1678. we would

  1679. pursue holiness

  1680. so that when

  1681. we read

  1682. Leviticus

  1683. through our

  1684. Bible reading

  1685. plan or

  1686. we read

  1687. numbers or

  1688. we read

  1689. another hard

  1690. book that

  1691. gives us

  1692. a bunch

  1693. of laws

  1694. shows what

  1695. he required

  1696. of Israel

  1697. we read

  1698. it and

  1699. say yes

  1700. God has

  1701. made us

  1702. holy as

  1703. he is

  1704. setting

  1705. Israel

  1706. apart in

  1707. the Old

  1708. Testament.

  1709. He has

  1710. set us

  1711. apart and

  1712. we celebrate

  1713. in that and

  1714. we pursue

  1715. holiness.

  1716. We desire

  1717. holiness.

  1718. We acknowledge

  1719. and admit that

  1720. we are his

  1721. children and

  1722. he has

  1723. called us

  1724. from darkness

  1725. and delight.

  1726. Let's pray

  1727. together.

  1728. Let's pray

  1729. together.
