  1. If you want to turn, Joshua is where we're going to be this morning, the book of Joshua.

  2. It is December 30th, 2012.

  3. There's roughly 37 hours left in the year.

  4. Now's the time to make those resolutions, right?

  5. To make those changes.

  6. To start the year off, turn the leaf over, however you want to say it.

  7. It's that time where we start thinking, what are some areas that I can change?

  8. What are some areas that I'm really disappointed in and I want to do better in?

  9. Some big changes even, sometimes.

  10. Examples like losing weight or decreasing debt or increasing retirement or saving for kids' college.

  11. Not all our changes are physical or financial.

  12. Some are even spiritual.

  13. I want to be in the Word more.

  14. I want to pray more.

  15. I want to trust God more.

  16. In all these resolutions that we make, and maybe not everybody in this room makes resolutions,

  17. but I know some of us do.

  18. In all these resolutions, what is it, what's your drive?

  19. What's your reason for making those resolutions?

  20. Because if the drive is right, if your reason is right for making these resolutions, then your succeeding increases substantially.

  21. The chance of succeeding.

  22. The chance of succeeding.

  23. But let's be honest.

  24. Most resolutions don't usually last, do they?

  25. In fact, 80%, according to the New York Times, 80% fail or give up by Valentine's Day.

  26. February 14th.

  27. February 14th.

  28. February 14th.

  29. That's six weeks maybe?

  30. Wow.

  31. It's 80%.

  32. Well, the question, of course, to that statement is why.

  33. Why do these resolutions fail?

  34. Why do we fail in not keeping our goals and our resolutions?

  35. Well, I believe it has to do with that drive.

  36. That reason why we do it.

  37. Our will, we're going to act on what our heart loves.

  38. So, and what our heart desires.

  39. So what we love, what we desire, we're going to do.

  40. So, if we love vanity, and that vanity is what's driving us to lose weight or eat healthier,

  41. then chances are it's going to fail.

  42. Well, and if we love financial security,

  43. then our drive will be to save more or invest more.

  44. And the counter to that is to not be generous as God wants us to be.

  45. And the chances of that resolution succeeding will also be low.

  46. The problem with all of us is our heart.

  47. The things we love, the things we hold dear, the things we treasure, we act on.

  48. Now, there's an assumption in making resolutions.

  49. And that assumption is that I am strong enough.

  50. That I can work harder and get, and see this to the end.

  51. Well, the assumption is founded on your and my ability to do what is not in line with our hearts most of the time.

  52. Because we're going to do what we love.

  53. So, when we read in Matthew 22, verses 37-40, it says,

    Matthew 22:37–40

  54. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.

  55. This is the great and first commandment.

  56. And the second is like it.

  57. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  58. On those two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.

  59. So, when we read those verses, and we hear those verses, it should rattle a little bit of emotion in us.

  60. Rattle a little bit of conviction.

  61. Because what we love, we will act on.

  62. And Matthew 22 says,

  63. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and love your neighbors.

  64. So, if we go back to the drive analogy, if we go back to the reason why we make resolutions.

  65. If we love vanity, if we love vanity, then it is that vanity that is driving us to lose weight, to eat better, to exercise more.

  66. And if we love vanity in this way, then we are finding our identity in our appearance.

  67. We're finding our identity in how people see us, and not in Jesus.

  68. And if we are not loving God, loving Jesus with all our heart, soul, and mind, as in Matthew 22 says,

  69. then in turn we are not loving our neighbors as ourselves.

  70. And if we love security, then that will drive us to set goals and resolutions that will give us security, or so we think.

  71. And if we find our security in our future finances, and not in Jesus,

  72. then we are not loving God as we should, and not loving our neighbors as ourselves.

  73. Now, in all this, I'm not saying that exercise is bad, or investments are bad.

  74. The heart, though, is the issue here that I'm trying to pick at.

  75. So, what if we made a resolution on the 30th of December, 2012,

  76. that lined up our drive, our reason, and our heart with God's heart?

  77. What if they came together?

  78. Well, let's see if we can accomplish that.

  79. Let's see if we can all together, looking at the book of Joshua, accomplish that.

  80. Joshua chapter 1 is where we will be.

    Joshua 1 chapter mention

  81. That was just the introduction, guys.

  82. We're going to read verses 1 through 9.

  83. The Word of God says,

  84. After the death of Moses, the servant of the Lord,

  85. the Lord said to Joshua, the son of Nun, Moses' assistant,

  86. Moses my servant is dead.

  87. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people,

  88. into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel.

  89. Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon,

  90. I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.

  91. From the wilderness in this Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates,

  92. all the land of the Hittites to the great sea,

  93. toward the going down of the sun, shall be your territory.

  94. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life.

  95. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you.

  96. I will not leave you or forsake you.

  97. Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land

  98. that I swore to their fathers to give them.

  99. Only be strong and very courageous,

  100. being careful to do according to all the law that Moses my servant commanded you.

  101. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left,

  102. that you may have good success wherever you go.

  103. This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth,

  104. but you shall meditate on it day and night,

  105. so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it.

  106. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

  107. Have I not commanded you?

  108. Be strong and courageous.

  109. Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed,

  110. for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

  111. Let's pray together.

  112. Father, I ask for your mercy this morning and your grace that your word would be preached,

  113. would be preached clear,

  114. that nothing that is said would be in false teaching or not line up with your word.

  115. That God, if there is something wrong that comes out of my mouth,

  116. that it would fall from our ears and not be remembered.

  117. Lord, we ask God that you would move this morning in our hearts,

  118. move us to action as your children.

  119. God, that we would love you, that we would treasure you,

  120. and that we would act on that love.

  121. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  122. Amen.

  123. Amen.

  124. So, just a little bit of background here,

  125. and these verses kind of give us most of it,

  126. but the people of Israel have been in the wilderness for 40 years.

  127. Moses had led them from Egypt.

  128. They've wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.

  129. They're sitting on the bank of the Jordan River,

  130. and Moses passes away,

  131. and God tells Joshua,

  132. you're next in line.

  133. You're my guy.

  134. Lead these people to the promised land as I had promised.

  135. Now, they were wandering in the wilderness

  136. because of their disbelief and their idol worship and their sin,

  137. and God promised that Moses would not see the promised land,

  138. and so now, Joshua is the guy to lead them into the promised land.

  139. So, that kind of sets us up a little bit where we started reading.

  140. I want all of us here to be courageous Christians,

  141. courageous men and women who love Jesus

  142. and love our neighbors and one another.

  143. It will take courage, and it takes courage,

  144. to be men and women of God.

  145. Even here in the United States, where we're pretty comfortable,

  146. it takes a little bit of courage,

  147. a little bit of drive,

  148. a little bit of oomph to truly walk out the Word.

  149. If our resolution this morning is to be courageous,

  150. courageous men and women for the Lord,

  151. then I believe by God's power and His provision

  152. that we will succeed far past Valentine's Day.

  153. Far past February 14, 2013.

  154. Because to be courageous, as here in Joshua,

  155. it's going to take a heart change.

  156. To be what God commands Joshua to be and to do,

  157. it's going to take our hearts being changed by God

  158. to do and to will what He has commanded us to do.

  159. So, starting off, I want you to be courageous,

  160. I want all of us to be courageous in believing the promises of God

  161. and not believing in our own promises.

  162. So, the first question I want to pose to you this morning is,

  163. do you believe the promises of God?

  164. Do you truly believe those promises?

  165. Do you believe that He is provider?

  166. Do you believe that He is faithful?

  167. Do you believe that He will never forsake you or leave you?

  168. Do you believe that He works everything by His mercy and grace

  169. for our good children of God, Christians?

  170. Do you believe that He loves you and that He cares for you?

  171. Because if you do, you'll act on those beliefs.

  172. Because what we love, what we believe, we will act on.

  173. So, if you believe the promises of God,

  174. then you will live according to those promises.

  175. Always mindful of those promises.

  176. Now, look in Joshua 1.

  177. We see a few promises.

  178. Verse 3 says,

  179. That every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon,

  180. I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses.

  181. Verse 6,

  182. Be strong and courageous,

  183. for you shall cause this people to inherit the land

  184. that I swore, that I promised to your fathers to give them.

  185. And in verse 9,

  186. Have I not commanded you, be strong and courageous,

  187. do not be frightened and do not be dismayed,

  188. for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

  189. I point these out to you just to say,

  190. God is going to do what He says He's going to do.

  191. If God promises something, He's going to accomplish it.

  192. And so, we can truly,

  193. with everything in us,

  194. believe the promises of God

  195. because they're going to happen

  196. or they have already happened.

  197. So, here's the rubber meets the road.

  198. In order to believe something,

  199. and not just as a gullible mark,

  200. not just as somebody who just believes everything,

  201. and, you know, you hear it on the internet that it's true,

  202. like that State Farm commercial.

  203. I don't know if you've seen that.

  204. It's really funny.

  205. In order to believe something, though,

  206. you truly,

  207. you have to know it.

  208. If you want to believe with every fiber of your being,

  209. you have to know it.

  210. And here, it's the promises of God.

  211. So, do you know the promises of God?

  212. Do you take your energy and time

  213. to be strong and courageous

  214. in learning the promises of God?

  215. Are you able to,

  216. in your life right now,

  217. December 30th,

  218. are you able to courageously trust

  219. and believe the promises of God

  220. based on what you know right now?

  221. Are you able to do that?

  222. What about,

  223. for example,

  224. what about when things don't go your way?

  225. The way things are.

  226. The way that you've planned them out

  227. to happen, to occur.

  228. Do you trust?

  229. Do you believe?

  230. Do you know God's promises?

  231. Joshua.

  232. Was Moses' assistant for 40 years.

  233. Now, we don't have a lot of background

  234. to Joshua and his relationship with Moses,

  235. but 40 years seems like a really long time

  236. to be number two in charge.

  237. It took him 40 years.

  238. God's timing was perfect

  239. and Moses passed away

  240. and Joshua was elevated to be the leader

  241. and to lead them into the promised land.

  242. Those 40 years were caused by sin.

  243. God punished them

  244. by making them wander in the wilderness

  245. because of their idol worship

  246. and their disbelief

  247. and their sin.

  248. So the timing there

  249. was even long for Joshua.

  250. And then a lot of Jewish scholars

  251. say that Joshua chapter 1 here

    Joshua 1 chapter mention

  252. was actually written 30 days

  253. after Moses' death

  254. because,

  255. in tradition,

  256. there was a 30 days of mourning

  257. mourning for death of patriarchs

  258. and leaders

  259. and that kind of stuff.

  260. So,

  261. we don't have evidence of that,

  262. but let's just say that's the case.

  263. So there's another 30 days

  264. of Joshua having to wait.

  265. So things weren't really,

  266. maybe things weren't happening

  267. as he had planned,

  268. as he had hoped for.

  269. But God's timing,

  270. God's call

  271. was there on Joshua.

  272. It was by God's hand

  273. that he was put in the position

  274. that he was in.

  275. So for you and I,

  276. can we look at the book of Joshua?

  277. Can we look at Joshua's story

  278. and can we say,

  279. I believe the promises of God.

  280. I trust God is working.

  281. I believe that He does not forsake us.

  282. He will not leave us.

  283. He is faithful.

  284. Can we do that?

  285. Even when things aren't going our way.

  286. So,

  287. 2013 can be

  288. a year of courage

  289. for you and for me

  290. in believing God and His promises

  291. and trusting

  292. not our own knowledge

  293. of what we think we know

  294. or what's the most wisest thing to do,

  295. but the trust in God

  296. and His leadership

  297. and His guiding

  298. and understanding.

  299. So not only be courageous

  300. in believing the promises of God,

  301. but be courageous

  302. in acting on the promises of God

  303. and not ignoring the promises

  304. until you need something

  305. like a Santa Claus

  306. or a grocery list

  307. that you hand to God.

  308. God gives Joshua

  309. four main commands in this text.

  310. In verse 2,

  311. He tells him to arise and go,

  312. lead the people out.

  313. Or in 6 and 7,

  314. He tells them to be strong and courageous.

  315. In 7 and 8,

  316. He says,

  317. do all according to the law.

  318. And in verse 9,

  319. He tells them,

  320. do not be frightened

  321. and dismayed.

  322. Now,

  323. the reason I

  324. give those to you

  325. is not just to point them out

  326. so that you can kind of see

  327. the commands of God,

  328. but I want you to see

  329. that God also gives Him

  330. four promises

  331. in these nine verses.

  332. In verses 3 and 6,

  333. God says,

  334. I have given you the land

  335. just as I promised Moses.

  336. In verses 5 and 9,

  337. God says,

  338. I will be with you.

  339. In verse 5,

  340. He says,

  341. I will not leave you

  342. or forsake you.

  343. And in verse 7 and 8,

  344. He says,

  345. if you do not turn from the law,

  346. if you keep the law,

  347. you will have good success

  348. and be prosperous.

  349. Now see,

  350. the reason I point

  351. these two out to you

  352. is that here,

  353. God is gracious

  354. and merciful to Joshua.

  355. He gives him the directions

  356. and He also gives him promises

  357. that I've already accomplished.

  358. He puts them together

  359. and says,

  360. now go.

  361. Makes it easy for Joshua.

  362. It's like,

  363. it's like,

  364. it's like God gave the directions

  365. and the map.

  366. You've got to lay them out

  367. step for step

  368. and then gave them the map too

  369. and said,

  370. this is what you're going to encounter

  371. and just go.

  372. Made it simple.

  373. He could trust,

  374. not in his own accomplishments

  375. and not in his own training,

  376. but he can trust in God

  377. and God's promises.

  378. I don't know if you guys know,

  379. but the new,

  380. I'm sure you do,

  381. a lot of you in here,

  382. if you have iPhones,

  383. you know this,

  384. that the iPhone map app

  385. is like horrible.

  386. I haven't experienced

  387. really bad things with it,

  388. but some people

  389. put in an address

  390. and it takes them

  391. 15 miles

  392. in the wrong place.

  393. And Apple has apologized

  394. and they've,

  395. if I gave you direction somewhere

  396. and I gave you 15 minutes

  397. off the way,

  398. that doesn't help you

  399. and it doesn't,

  400. makes me look like an idiot.

  401. And God gives us his promises,

  402. he gives us the direction

  403. and they're always right.

  404. They're always to where he wants us to be.

  405. There's no mistake,

  406. there's no questioning.

  407. I'm sure Joshua,

  408. after hearing this from the Lord,

  409. these nine verses,

  410. and then God speaks with him

  411. more and more

  412. like he did with Moses.

  413. Joshua didn't say,

  414. man,

  415. I don't know,

  416. what do you guys think?

  417. Should we go?

  418. It says,

  419. it says that Joshua,

  420. in fact,

  421. look at Joshua chapter 3,

    Joshua 3:5

  422. verse 5.

  423. Flip over one page.

  424. Joshua chapter 3,

    Joshua 3:5

  425. verse 5.

  426. They're getting ready to go.

  427. He hasn't hemmed and hawed,

  428. he hasn't doubted,

  429. he believed the promises of God

  430. because God gave him directions

  431. and he gave him promises.

  432. He made it clear to him.

  433. He says,

  434. then Joshua said to the people,

  435. consecrate yourselves,

  436. for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.

  437. That's good stuff.

  438. He tells the people,

  439. God is going to do wonders among you.

  440. In other words,

  441. we're going into the promised land

  442. and God is going to work

  443. because God is faithful

  444. and we believe his promises.

  445. So,

  446. what's the rest of the story for Joshua?

  447. Well,

  448. he leads them into the promised land.

  449. They defeat several armies

  450. and several people.

  451. They lose a battle,

  452. one battle because of sin,

  453. of one man,

  454. one guy.

  455. And Joshua is forced to discipline him

  456. by killing him and his entire family.

  457. And during his 110 years on earth,

  458. he never forgets

  459. and constantly reminds his people

  460. what God has done

  461. and is doing for them.

  462. Constantly bringing people back

  463. to the promises of God

  464. because he is faithful

  465. and God is going to do

  466. what he says he's going to do.

  467. So,

  468. it isn't just good enough,

  469. that was horrible,

  470. it isn't good enough

  471. to just believe.

  472. We can believe,

  473. but we must act

  474. on what we believe.

  475. See,

  476. knowledge is nothing

  477. without action.

  478. James says that faith

  479. without works is dead.

  480. There's got to be action

  481. to our lives.

  482. And your neighbors

  483. and your friends

  484. and your family,

  485. they're not going to care

  486. how much you know

  487. or how many verses

  488. you memorized in 2012.

  489. Just be honest.

  490. They're not.

  491. What they're going to care about

  492. is how you treat them,

  493. how you love them.

  494. So,

  495. do you love

  496. your neighbors,

  497. your friends,

  498. your family

  499. because

  500. and out of the love

  501. that God has shown you,

  502. and because

  503. and out of the love

  504. that you have

  505. for His Word.

  506. Be courageous

  507. in acting

  508. on the promises of God.

  509. Now,

  510. for some of you,

  511. this may be like

  512. the whetstones

  513. going to Afghanistan

  514. to minister.

  515. It may be

  516. leaving everything

  517. and everyone you know

  518. and moving your family

  519. to a new city.

  520. It may be

  521. being more generous

  522. in supporting

  523. and providing

  524. for others

  525. within this congregation.

  526. And you can

  527. fill it in.

  528. It may be

  529. a whole plethora

  530. of things

  531. that God is calling you

  532. to be courageous

  533. and acting

  534. on the promises of God.

  535. Because God

  536. doesn't change.

  537. So,

  538. for Joshua

  539. in this verse,

  540. God gave him promises

  541. along with commands.

  542. So,

  543. he said,

  544. go and do this

  545. and here's what

  546. I've already promised.

  547. Here's what I've done,

  548. I'm accomplishing,

  549. I have accomplished,

  550. now go and do it.

  551. So,

  552. what happens

  553. in our life

  554. when God

  555. doesn't give

  556. the promises?

  557. When he just

  558. gives us a command?

  559. Do we shrink?

  560. Does our faith

  561. shrink and shrivel

  562. and disappear

  563. and we just lose

  564. all gumption?

  565. we have been given

  566. his word.

  567. The word of God,

  568. the Bible

  569. that you hold

  570. in your lap,

  571. that you read

  572. on your phone.

  573. We've been given

  574. his word

  575. not only to guide us

  576. but to educate us

  577. and the world

  578. around us

  579. who God is

  580. and to remind us

  581. and to know

  582. his promises

  583. to us,

  584. his children.

  585. So,

  586. our faith

  587. acting on what

  588. we believe

  589. should be strengthened

  590. in the unknown

  591. because his word

  592. says he will do

  593. what he says

  594. he's going to do.

  595. He's going to provide.

  596. He's known.

  597. His name

  598. is God's provider.

  599. He's working out

  600. by his grace

  601. and mercy

  602. for our good

  603. even in the circumstances

  604. where it doesn't

  605. seem like that.

  606. He will never leave

  607. his children

  608. nor forsake them.

  609. He's the everlasting

  610. Father.

  611. He is who

  612. he says he is.

  613. He is the Savior.

  614. And in him

  615. we find

  616. our identity.

  617. Not in our

  618. circumstances.

  619. Not in what

  620. we've accomplished.

  621. We find our identity

  622. in him

  623. alone.

  624. And in our

  625. identity in Christ

  626. we can trust

  627. and act

  628. on his

  629. promises.

  630. And that's because

  631. he is God

  632. and he does

  633. what he says

  634. he's going to do.

  635. In his word

  636. for us to read

  637. today

  638. in Joshua's time

  639. where he gave him

  640. action

  641. told him what to do

  642. and gave him promises

  643. to go alongside those.

  644. We can read these

  645. and we can know

  646. the promises of God

  647. and we can act

  648. on them.

  649. But not only

  650. we need to be

  651. courageous in

  652. believing

  653. the promises

  654. of God

  655. and in acting

  656. on the promises

  657. of God

  658. but also be

  659. courageous in

  660. treasuring God's

  661. word

  662. and not just

  663. absorbing it

  664. as knowledge.

  665. Look at verse

  666. 7 and 8

  667. in Joshua

    Joshua 1 chapter mention

  668. chapter 1.

  669. Only be strong

  670. and very courageous

  671. being careful

  672. to do

  673. according to

  674. all the law

  675. that Moses

  676. my servant

  677. commanded you.

  678. Do not turn

  679. from it

  680. to the right hand

  681. or to the left

  682. that you may have

  683. good success

  684. wherever you go.

  685. This book of the law

  686. shall not depart

  687. from your mouth

  688. but you shall

  689. meditate on it

  690. day and night

  691. so that you may

  692. be careful to do

  693. according to all

  694. that is written in it.

  695. For then

  696. you will make

  697. your way

  698. prosperous

  699. and then

  700. you will have

  701. good success.

  702. Now

  703. this is a dumb

  704. statement I know

  705. very elementary

  706. but there is a

  707. difference between

  708. knowing and

  709. treasuring.

  710. I know

  711. that my fridge

  712. is white

  713. and the inside

  714. of it is cold.

  715. I know that

  716. because it's a fridge

  717. and the outside

  718. looks white.

  719. I treasure

  720. my wife.

  721. Now things

  722. would get really

  723. awkward and really

  724. tough if I mixed

  725. those two up.

  726. Just honest.

  727. It would be horrible.

  728. My life would be

  729. horrible.

  730. Treasuring means

  731. that you value it.

  732. You protect it.

  733. You care for it.

  734. You revisit it

  735. time and time

  736. again.

  737. Now there are

  738. times in the evening

  739. when I get home

  740. from work

  741. that I just follow

  742. Jamie around

  743. in the building.

  744. She's doing laundry

  745. down the hall

  746. I just follow her.

  747. She's folding clothes

  748. I just follow her.

  749. She's punishing a child

  750. while I join in

  751. but I follow her

  752. just because

  753. I treasure her

  754. and I want to be

  755. with her

  756. and I want to

  757. spend time with her.

  758. It is the same

  759. with God's word.

  760. Do you look forward

  761. to times reading it?

  762. Or do you avoid

  763. or ignore

  764. such things

  765. in such times?

  766. Do you just read it

  767. to gain knowledge

  768. or do you truly

  769. believe it is

  770. the word

  771. of God

  772. from God

  773. to you?

  774. Knowledge is good

  775. but when it hinders

  776. or disrupts

  777. the proper relationship

  778. it ceases to be good.

  779. It's great for me

  780. to know that my fridge

  781. is white.

  782. Matches other appliances.

  783. It's great for me

  784. to know that the inside

  785. is cold

  786. that I can put milk

  787. and eggs in there

  788. and it will be okay.

  789. But the moment

  790. I treasure it

  791. that knowledge

  792. becomes my downfall

  793. and breaks

  794. the relationship.

  795. See there's power

  796. in a healthy marriage.

  797. There's power

  798. in the fact

  799. that it can display

  800. the gospel

  801. to the world.

  802. Husband and wife.

  803. The way the husband

  804. loves the wife.

  805. Christ and the church.

  806. It can show people

  807. what love

  808. really looks like.

  809. But the same is true

  810. with God's word.

  811. Like there's power

  812. in God's word.

  813. There's direction in it

  814. and it too

  815. can display the gospel

  816. as we treasure it

  817. and it becomes part

  818. of our everyday life.

  819. People around us

  820. will see differences

  821. when God's word

  822. has infiltrated

  823. our life.

  824. Now verse 7

  825. in Joshua chapter 1

    Joshua 1 chapter mention

  826. says do according

  827. to all the law

  828. that Moses my servant

  829. commanded you.

  830. Do not turn from it

  831. to the right hand

  832. or to the left.

  833. In other words

  834. when it is treasured

  835. it will not leave you

  836. and you will not leave it.

  837. It will always

  838. be on your mind.

  839. Verse 8 says

  840. this book of the law

  841. shall not depart

  842. from your mouth

  843. but you shall meditate

  844. on it day and night

  845. so that you may be careful

  846. to do according

  847. to all that is written

  848. in it.

  849. In your comings

  850. and goings

  851. it shall be on your lips

  852. treasuring it.

  853. Now that does not mean

  854. that you are constantly

  855. reciting scripture

  856. or singing through songs

  857. or scripture to songs

  858. although it could

  859. but that doesn't

  860. necessarily mean that.

  861. It means that

  862. that like ingredients

  863. that simmer on the stove

  864. for stew

  865. carrots

  866. beef

  867. onions

  868. potatoes

  869. you put it all in there

  870. you mix it up

  871. and you just let it

  872. simmer on the stove.

  873. Many ingredients

  874. they mold together

  875. and they become

  876. one great flavor.

  877. The word of God

  878. simmers in you.

  879. It changes your heart

  880. and your desires

  881. to match his desires.

  882. The many ingredients

  883. of you

  884. of your life

  885. your struggles

  886. your world view

  887. your culture

  888. the culture around you

  889. and the word of God

  890. all simmer.

  891. And it is the word of God

  892. instead of

  893. like the stew

  894. all the ingredients

  895. become one

  896. it is the word of God

  897. that rises out

  898. that prevails

  899. over the other flavors

  900. that takes over

  901. the other ingredients

  902. in our life.

  903. When we treasure

  904. the word of God

  905. we allow the word of God

  906. to change us

  907. by believing it

  908. by living it

  909. and by loving it.

  910. So 2013

  911. 36 and a half hours

  912. from now

  913. can be the year

  914. that you treasure

  915. God's word

  916. more than you have

  917. in the previous years.

  918. If you treasure

  919. God's word

  920. your life will be different.

  921. You will act different

  922. you will live different

  923. you will talk different

  924. you will love different.

  925. When we treasure it

  926. we don't try

  927. to hoard it.

  928. We don't try

  929. to keep it for ourselves

  930. and store it away.

  931. That's what we do

  932. with knowledge.

  933. Some knowledge

  934. we share

  935. but when we treasure

  936. something

  937. we share it.

  938. We give it out.

  939. We let people know.

  940. We will want to share

  941. with anyone

  942. and everyone

  943. when we treasure

  944. something.

  945. So

  946. be courageous

  947. in believing

  948. the promises of God.

  949. Be courageous

  950. in acting

  951. on the promises

  952. of God.

  953. Be courageous

  954. in treasuring

  955. God's word.

  956. And be courageous

  957. in living out

  958. the word of God.

  959. Very similar

  960. to the last one

  961. or the second one

  962. acting on the promises

  963. of God

  964. but a little different.

  965. in our text

  966. Joshua 1

  967. 1-9

  968. God tells Joshua

  969. twice to

  970. be courageous

  971. and strong.

  972. Two separate times

  973. reminds him

  974. be courageous

  975. and strong.

  976. Now he does so

  977. because he's telling

  978. him to do something

  979. right?

  980. He's telling him

  981. something that

  982. that is new

  983. something that

  984. is dangerous

  985. something that is

  986. that is life

  987. changing.

  988. Now when we

  989. believe the gospel

  990. when we treasure

  991. God's word

  992. we will do things

  993. that are new

  994. to those around us.

  995. We will do things

  996. that are

  997. different

  998. maybe awkward

  999. maybe

  1000. they can't

  1001. understand why

  1002. and I believe

  1003. as Christians

  1004. there will come

  1005. a moment

  1006. or moments

  1007. that God

  1008. will ask you

  1009. to do something

  1010. to the world

  1011. that may not

  1012. make any sense.

  1013. Are you willing

  1014. to do so?

  1015. Are you willing

  1016. to do something

  1017. that just seems

  1018. a little awkward

  1019. seems a little

  1020. different

  1021. and they just

  1022. don't get it?

  1023. For example

  1024. Jamie and I

  1025. went to see

  1026. Les Miserables

  1027. on the day

  1028. after Christmas

  1029. and we were

  1030. super happy

  1031. to do so

  1032. believe it or not

  1033. I was happy

  1034. to go see it.

  1035. The whole thing

  1036. is a musical

  1037. by the way

  1038. if you haven't

  1039. seen it

  1040. even in normal

  1041. conversations

  1042. are sung

  1043. so prepare yourself

  1044. if you're going

  1045. to see that.

  1046. There's probably

  1047. ten words

  1048. that aren't sung

  1049. in the whole

  1050. thing

  1051. but in the

  1052. story

  1053. in the story

  1054. of Les Mis

  1055. there's two

  1056. main characters

  1057. there's three

  1058. or four

  1059. but two

  1060. main characters

  1061. guys

  1062. Jean Valjean

  1063. is the one

  1064. main character

  1065. and he is

  1066. the criminal

  1067. he is the

  1068. bad guy

  1069. and then

  1070. there's

  1071. Javert

  1072. who is the

  1073. inspector

  1074. who has

  1075. been over

  1076. seeing

  1077. Jean Valjean

  1078. from in

  1079. prison

  1080. and then

  1081. trying to

  1082. catch him

  1083. because he

  1084. missed parole

  1085. throughout the

  1086. years of the

  1087. story

  1088. at the

  1089. beginning of

  1090. the story

  1091. Jean Valjean

  1092. gains his

  1093. freedom

  1094. and he

  1095. tries to find

  1096. work

  1097. and of course

  1098. he's a criminal

  1099. and nobody's

  1100. going to give him

  1101. work

  1102. and he finds

  1103. this church

  1104. and he falls

  1105. asleep on the

  1106. front porch

  1107. and in this

  1108. church

  1109. is a bishop

  1110. and the bishop

  1111. comes and he

  1112. wakes him up

  1113. in the middle

  1114. of the night

  1115. and of course

  1116. Jean Valjean

  1117. thinks

  1118. this guy's

  1119. going to run

  1120. me off

  1121. you know

  1122. I'm done

  1123. and the bishop

  1124. says come in

  1125. and he invites

  1126. him into the

  1127. into the house

  1128. and he feeds

  1129. him

  1130. lets him sit

  1131. by the fire

  1132. warms himself

  1133. gives him a bed

  1134. to sleep in

  1135. and in the middle

  1136. of the night

  1137. Jean Valjean

  1138. decides that

  1139. this isn't for me

  1140. I'm going to

  1141. steal what I

  1142. can

  1143. I'm going to

  1144. grab what I

  1145. can of the

  1146. bishops

  1147. the silver

  1148. and whatever

  1149. else I can

  1150. grab

  1151. and I'm

  1152. going to

  1153. run

  1154. well he gets

  1155. caught

  1156. he gets

  1157. caught

  1158. not by the

  1159. main inspector

  1160. but by some

  1161. other police

  1162. or whatever

  1163. and they

  1164. bring him

  1165. back

  1166. and they

  1167. confront

  1168. they put him

  1169. before the

  1170. bishop

  1171. and says

  1172. this man

  1173. has stolen

  1174. your stuff

  1175. and we want

  1176. you to just

  1177. claim your

  1178. stuff so that

  1179. we can put

  1180. him back in

  1181. prison forever

  1182. because he's

  1183. a criminal

  1184. and he's

  1185. nothing

  1186. and the

  1187. bishop says

  1188. well I

  1189. was trying

  1190. to get

  1191. him

  1192. but I

  1193. wanted to

  1194. get him

  1195. because he

  1196. had forgot

  1197. two of the

  1198. greatest

  1199. treasures I

  1200. have

  1201. which are

  1202. these

  1203. candle

  1204. stands

  1205. big huge

  1206. pieces of

  1207. silver

  1208. and he

  1209. said I

  1210. wanted him

  1211. to have

  1212. these too

  1213. so he

  1214. gives him

  1215. his greatest

  1216. treasure

  1217. forgives him

  1218. and shows him

  1219. mercy

  1220. well this

  1221. story

  1222. carries

  1223. throughout the

  1224. whole

  1225. rest of the

  1226. story

  1227. this is the

  1228. beginning of

  1229. the movie

  1230. and Jean

  1231. Valjean

  1232. decides to

  1233. because this

  1234. bishop had

  1235. shown him

  1236. mercy that

  1237. he was going

  1238. to live

  1239. differently

  1240. that he was

  1241. going to show

  1242. mercy when he

  1243. could that he

  1244. was going to

  1245. show grace to

  1246. people when he

  1247. could that he

  1248. was going to

  1249. give to the

  1250. poor and he

  1251. was no matter

  1252. how successful

  1253. in business he

  1254. was going to

  1255. be he was

  1256. going to provide

  1257. for people in

  1258. need and show

  1259. them mercy

  1260. comes to the

  1261. end towards the

  1262. end of the

  1263. movie and he

  1264. has an opportunity

  1265. Jean Valjean has

  1266. an opportunity to

  1267. kill the man

  1268. who has been

  1269. chasing him

  1270. the man who

  1271. had put him

  1272. in prison

  1273. the man who

  1274. tormented him

  1275. and he doesn't

  1276. kill him

  1277. he shows him

  1278. mercy

  1279. even in that

  1280. moment

  1281. drives Javert

  1282. crazy to the

  1283. point of suicide

  1284. the point is

  1285. I gave you

  1286. that whole thing

  1287. for this point

  1288. the grace

  1289. and the mercy

  1290. that you have

  1291. been shown

  1292. in Christ

  1293. Jesus

  1294. that grace

  1295. and that mercy

  1296. that Jean Valjean

  1297. had been shown

  1298. pales in

  1299. comparison to

  1300. the mercy

  1301. and the grace

  1302. that you have

  1303. been shown

  1304. in Christ

  1305. and that grace

  1306. and that mercy

  1307. should dictate

  1308. how we live

  1309. and how we love

  1310. one another

  1311. and how we love

  1312. others

  1313. and how we share

  1314. our lives

  1315. and how generous

  1316. we are

  1317. we can

  1318. forgive

  1319. when everything

  1320. around us

  1321. says to repay

  1322. hate

  1323. place judgment

  1324. on

  1325. we can be

  1326. courageous

  1327. in how we

  1328. live

  1329. because of the

  1330. grace and the

  1331. mercy that we

  1332. have been shown

  1333. there will also

  1334. be moments

  1335. in our lives

  1336. as Christians

  1337. that there will

  1338. be danger

  1339. involved

  1340. some level

  1341. of danger

  1342. it may not

  1343. be physical

  1344. but it will be

  1345. dangerous

  1346. are you willing

  1347. to submit

  1348. to God's

  1349. leading

  1350. and do

  1351. something

  1352. dangerous

  1353. for him

  1354. are you

  1355. willing to

  1356. in those

  1357. moments

  1358. decide now

  1359. that you're

  1360. going to

  1361. follow

  1362. no matter

  1363. what

  1364. wherever

  1365. that takes

  1366. you

  1367. wherever

  1368. that leads

  1369. Joshua

  1370. in our

  1371. text

  1372. a couple

  1373. chapters

  1374. later

  1375. he leads

  1376. chapter 3

  1377. he leads

  1378. the people

  1379. in the

  1380. promised

  1381. land

  1382. it says

  1383. in

  1384. can't find

  1385. it now

  1386. it says

  1387. that he

  1388. had caused

  1389. he'll cause

  1390. his people

  1391. to walk

  1392. and gain

  1393. the promised

  1394. land

  1395. he was

  1396. Jesus

  1397. like

  1398. in the

  1399. old

  1400. testament

  1401. there were

  1402. battles

  1403. there were

  1404. judgments

  1405. there was

  1406. danger

  1407. there was

  1408. sin

  1409. and there

  1410. was victory

  1411. Jesus

  1412. Christ

  1413. died

  1414. so that

  1415. he could

  1416. lead

  1417. his

  1418. people

  1419. into

  1420. the

  1421. eternal

  1422. promised

  1423. land

  1424. like

  1425. Joshua

  1426. did

  1427. here

  1428. Jesus

  1429. lived

  1430. a

  1431. sinless

  1432. life

  1433. died

  1434. with

  1435. the

  1436. sin

  1437. of

  1438. the

  1439. world

  1440. on

  1441. his

  1442. shoulders

  1443. he

  1444. died

  1445. in order

  1446. that

  1447. we

  1448. could

  1449. live

  1450. and he

  1451. leads

  1452. us

  1453. to

  1454. the

  1455. promised

  1456. land

  1457. if we

  1458. follow

  1459. him

  1460. until

  1461. that

  1462. until

  1463. that

  1464. time

  1465. when we

  1466. reach

  1467. the

  1468. promised

  1469. land

  1470. there

  1471. will

  1472. be

  1473. battles

  1474. we

  1475. will

  1476. fight

  1477. here

  1478. on

  1479. earth

  1480. there

  1481. will

  1482. be

  1483. struggles

  1484. there

  1485. will

  1486. be

  1487. sadness

  1488. and

  1489. sorrow

  1490. there

  1491. will

  1492. be

  1493. judgments

  1494. there

  1495. will

  1496. be

  1497. danger

  1498. there

  1499. will

  1500. be

  1501. victory

  1502. are

  1503. you

  1504. willing

  1505. to

  1506. trust

  1507. him

  1508. are

  1509. you

  1510. willing

  1511. to

  1512. believe

  1513. his

  1514. promises

  1515. and

  1516. to

  1517. repent

  1518. of

  1519. your

  1520. sins

  1521. and

  1522. follow

  1523. Jesus

  1524. it

  1525. will

  1526. be

  1527. the

  1528. most

  1529. courageous

  1530. thing

  1531. that

  1532. you

  1533. can

  1534. do

  1535. and

  1536. the

  1537. most

  1538. dangerous

  1539. and

  1540. the

  1541. most

  1542. rewarding

  1543. did

  1544. you

  1545. know

  1546. that

  1547. that

  1548. 70%

  1549. of

  1550. patients

  1551. who

  1552. had

  1553. coronary

  1554. bypass

  1555. surgery

  1556. major

  1557. life

  1558. threatening

  1559. surgeries

  1560. they

  1561. may die

  1562. if

  1563. they

  1564. don't

  1565. have

  1566. the

  1567. surgery

  1568. 70%

  1569. return

  1570. to

  1571. their

  1572. old

  1573. habits

  1574. within

  1575. two

  1576. years

  1577. 70%

  1578. now

  1579. I'm

  1580. probably

  1581. one

  1582. of

  1583. those

  1584. I

  1585. haven't

  1586. had

  1587. coronary

  1588. surgery

  1589. or

  1590. anything

  1591. but

  1592. I

  1593. would

  1594. probably

  1595. be

  1596. one

  1597. of

  1598. those

  1599. it's

  1600. because

  1601. we

  1602. are

  1603. corrupt

  1604. it's

  1605. because

  1606. we

  1607. are

  1608. not

  1609. as

  1610. strong

  1611. as

  1612. we

  1613. think

  1614. we

  1615. are

  1616. we

  1617. need

  1618. pun

  1619. intended

  1620. a

  1621. heart

  1622. change

  1623. we

  1624. need

  1625. a

  1626. life

  1627. change

  1628. and

  1629. Jesus

  1630. is

  1631. strong

  1632. enough

  1633. he

  1634. is

  1635. !

  1636. victorious

  1637. over

  1638. sin

  1639. and

  1640. death

  1641. and

  1642. the

  1643. very

  1644. problems

  1645. we

  1646. face

  1647. he

  1648. has

  1649. beaten

  1650. so

  1651. let's

  1652. trust

  1653. him

  1654. today

  1655. let's

  1656. trust

  1657. him

  1658. December

  1659. 30th

  1660. 2012

  1661. we

  1662. can

  1663. be

  1664. courageous

  1665. in

  1666. believing

  1667. the

  1668. promises

  1669. of

  1670. God

  1671. we

  1672. can

  1673. be

  1674. courageous

  1675. in

  1676. acting

  1677. on

  1678. the

  1679. promises

  1680. of

  1681. God

  1682. we

  1683. can

  1684. be

  1685. courageous

  1686. in

  1687. treasuring

  1688. God's

  1689. word

  1690. and

  1691. we

  1692. can

  1693. be

  1694. courageous

  1695. in

  1696. living

  1697. out

  1698. the

  1699. word

  1700. of

  1701. God

  1702. now

  1703. I

  1704. started

  1705. by

  1706. talking

  1707. about

  1708. resolutions

  1709. and

  1710. how

  1711. the

  1712. reason

  1713. behind

  1714. resolutions

  1715. is

  1716. why

  1717. they

  1718. fail

  1719. God

  1720. can

  1721. change

  1722. a

  1723. heart

  1724. God

  1725. can

  1726. take

  1727. a

  1728. heart

  1729. of

  1730. stone

  1731. and

  1732. make

  1733. it

  1734. a

  1735. heart

  1736. of

  1737. flesh

  1738. he

  1739. can

  1740. change

  1741. your

  1742. desires

  1743. and

  1744. your

  1745. love

  1746. he

  1747. has

  1748. in

  1749. me

  1750. he

  1751. has

  1752. in

  1753. several

  1754. in

  1755. here

  1756. the

  1757. problem

  1758. isn't

  1759. if

  1760. God

  1761. can

  1762. because

  1763. he

  1764. can

  1765. the

  1766. problem

  1767. is

  1768. will

  1769. you

  1770. let

  1771. him

  1772. will

  1773. you

  1774. invite

  1775. him

  1776. to

  1777. change

  1778. your

  1779. !

  1780. will

  1781. you

  1782. ask

  1783. God

  1784. for

  1785. that

  1786. new

  1787. heart

  1788. so

  1789. that

  1790. your

  1791. resolution

  1792. can

  1793. see it

  1794. to the

  1795. end

  1796. that

  1797. you

  1798. can

  1799. be

  1800. a

  1801. man

  1802. or

  1803. woman

  1804. of

  1805. courage

  1806. not

  1807. for

  1808. your

  1809. name

  1810. not

  1811. for

  1812. your

  1813. glory

  1814. but

  1815. for

  1816. his

  1817. name

  1818. and

  1819. his

  1820. glory

  1821. let's

  1822. pray

  1823. together

  1824. !
