    Romans 12 chapter mention

  2. ! We'll continue our journey, our march together, verse by verse, through the book of Romans.

  3. ! And we have come now to the practical part of the text.

  4. As Paul has in the first 11 chapters, given us the great doctrine of the gospel,

  5. the gospel that comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, forever,

  6. he's turned now at the end of 11 and the beginning of 12 to help us, to show us what that now looks like in practice.

  7. What are the practical implications of all of these great truths?

  8. And lest we forget, he begins by saying, verse 1, verse 2,

  9. that we are to, now as our reasonable service, as the obvious thing we should be doing in response to the glorious truth of the gospel,

  10. we should be giving ourselves, all of us, as a living sacrifice.

  11. Offering ourselves up to his service.

  12. And we do that by the renewing of our mind, so that we'll be transformed, so that we'll know what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  13. And I've been asserting to you that he doesn't leave that in the wind for us,

  14. but that he goes on to talk about what is good and acceptable and perfect.

  15. He lays out for us the model of Christian living.

  16. We've talked about verse 9, about letting love be genuine.

  17. Genuine love.

  18. Unhypocritical love.

  19. The love that is characterized by abhorring evil and holding fast to good.

  20. That this is the summary.

  21. This is the probably oversimplified summary of what godliness looks like.

  22. What a life offered holy to god looks like is a life that expresses that reality in genuine, unhypocritical love.

  23. And as we've tried to look at and kind of break down, we've got this overarching exhortation to genuine love,

  24. merciful, self-sacrificial, subservient love.

  25. We've tried to break down these exhortations and look at them piecemeal, as challenging as that is often,

  26. as we look at the scriptures, to see that he calls us to genuinely love the saints, verses 10-13.

  27. Last week we talked about genuine love to all people, generally, in verses 15 and 16.

  28. And so we see the scope then of the church and the world.

  29. But then he narrows it back down for us a bit to talk about the group that would be most difficult to love genuinely.

  30. And that is your enemies.

  31. You see this in verse 14 and then 17-21, which I recognize is a bit of an odd way to break this up.

  32. I wrestled immensely on doing it this way.

  33. But I think you'll see the tie-in.

  34. I hope you'll see the tie-in together in just a moment.

  35. So let's read together, beginning in verse 14 through the end of the chapter.

  36. Bless those who persecute you.

  37. Bless and do not curse them.

  38. Rejoice with those who rejoice.

  39. Weep with those who weep.

  40. Live in harmony with one another.

  41. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly.

  42. Never be wise in your own sight.

  43. Repay no one evil for evil,

  44. but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all.

  45. If possible, so far as it depends on you,

  46. live peaceably with all.

  47. Beloved, never avenge yourselves,

  48. but leave it to the wrath of God.

  49. For it is written,

  50. Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.

  51. To the contrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him.

  52. If he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

  53. For by so doing you will heat burning coals on his head.

  54. Do not be overcome by evil,

  55. but overcome evil with good.

  56. Let's pray together.

  57. Father God, we thank you for the blessing of your word.

  58. It is a grace to us.

  59. Thank you also for the church,

  60. the office of pastor,

  61. the gift in varying levels to teach.

  62. And because the realities of the gospel exist,

  63. we all have,

  64. those of us who have placed faith in Christ,

  65. your spirit abiding within us.

  66. So I pray this morning that by your spirit,

  67. I will preach well.

  68. I will unfold the meaning of this text well.

  69. And that by your spirit,

  70. we will hear it.

  71. And we will have it applied to our hearts

  72. that they might be tenderized

  73. towards those we may consider our enemies.

  74. I pray this in Christ's name.

  75. Amen.

  76. So verse 14, we have the exhortation to

  77. bless those who persecute you.

  78. Bless and do not curse them.

  79. The most difficult group of people to love.

  80. Those who hate you.

  81. Those who persecute you.

  82. Those who ridicule.

  83. Who potentially,

  84. as you may be sent out all over this world,

  85. physically would harm you,

  86. imprison you,

  87. beat you.

  88. Right?

  89. The call is a high call.

  90. It's not particularly complicated.

  91. It's a fairly simple concept,

  92. but it is incredibly profound.

  93. It flips humanity,

  94. who the fallen human state is,

  95. it flips it around.

  96. Right?

  97. Because what we tend to do as people

  98. is we tend to stand our ground

  99. and defend our rights.

  100. Somebody pokes us,

  101. we hit them back.

  102. Right?

  103. And that is not the calling to the Christian.

  104. Right?

  105. The calling to the Christian

  106. is to turn the edge of the cheek.

  107. The calling to the Christian

  108. is to go the extra mile.

  109. Right?

  110. The calling to the Christian

  111. is to give what hasn't even been asked for

  112. to those who are persecuting us.

  113. And you'll remember last week,

  114. if you weren't here,

  115. we talked extensively about

  116. verse 15 and 16 and 17

  117. about humility,

  118. about proper,

  119. actual, real humility

  120. and what that looks like

  121. and how real humility

  122. accompanies faith.

  123. If you are a Christian,

  124. if you are in fact a Christian,

  125. you must be humbled.

  126. A humble person recognizes

  127. that apart from the saving work

  128. of Jesus Christ,

  129. we are nothing.

  130. Our nature has been utterly spoiled by sin.

  131. There's no good thing left in us.

  132. Now because of Christ,

  133. we are sons and daughters

  134. of the Most High.

  135. There's infinite value in that.

  136. But apart from that,

  137. we're nothing.

  138. Faith and humility

  139. work together

  140. hand in hand.

  141. And if you're humble,

  142. you also recognize

  143. that you really have

  144. no rights.

  145. We are Americans.

  146. I believe everyone in here

  147. is an American citizen.

  148. And as Americans,

  149. we have rights.

  150. Certain things that are given to us

  151. inalienable,

  152. glad I said that right.

  153. I was worried

  154. as it was coming to my mouth.

  155. Inalienable rights

  156. granted to us

  157. by our founding documents.

  158. Praise God for that.

  159. We live in a great country.

  160. The best country,

  161. I would argue.

  162. And there's lots of debate

  163. right now about our rights

  164. being taken from us.

  165. And they shouldn't be

  166. to be political for a moment.

  167. They shouldn't be.

  168. But in reality,

  169. in all actuality,

  170. we have no rights.

  171. What we deserve,

  172. what has been granted to us

  173. apart from Christ,

  174. is eternal death

  175. and destruction.

  176. Separation from God forever.

  177. That's what we have a right to.

  178. We've purchased that

  179. with our sin.

  180. In all of our sinful activity,

  181. we have said to God,

  182. I hate you,

  183. and what the return of that is,

  184. is his wrath.

  185. That's what we have a right to.

  186. In Christ,

  187. we have all sorts of

  188. beautiful, wonderful gifts

  189. and treasures

  190. found in God.

  191. But the temptation

  192. to curse those who persecute us,

  193. to do evil back to them,

  194. to utter evil in their direction,

  195. is the result of us believing

  196. that we deserve better.

  197. So humility

  198. is what permits us

  199. to bless those

  200. who persecute us

  201. and not curse them.

  202. And I know that not all of you

  203. were here last week,

  204. but I hope you've been seeing the tie

  205. between 14

  206. on through 16

  207. and now

  208. into verse 17.

  209. As he expands

  210. more of what he means,

  211. as he says,

  212. repay no one evil for evil,

  213. but give thought to do

  214. what is honorable

  215. in the sight of all.

  216. This is not a concept

  217. that's foreign to the Scriptures.

  218. Paul wrote again

  219. in 1 Thessalonians 5.15,

  220. See that no one repays anyone evil

  221. for evil,

  222. but always seek to do good

  223. to one another

  224. and to everyone.

  225. Peter wrote the same.

  226. 1 Peter 3.8.9,

  227. Finally, all of you

  228. have unity of mind,

  229. sympathy,

  230. brotherly love,

  231. a tender heart,

  232. and a humble mind.

  233. So humility.

  234. Do not repay

  235. evil for evil

  236. or reviling for reviling,

  237. but on the contrary,

  238. bless.

  239. For to this you are called

  240. that you may obtain

  241. a blessing.

  242. Now,

  243. he is addressing

  244. particularly,

  245. in this case,

  246. persecutors, right?

  247. Verse 14,

  248. Bless those who persecute you.

  249. But we certainly can apply

  250. the principle out

  251. beyond that.

  252. I would venture to say

  253. that no one here

  254. probably really has

  255. a persecutor in mind

  256. as they're thinking

  257. of these Scriptures.

  258. I hope that as you're

  259. broadening your faith

  260. and you're getting out there

  261. and you're sharing it

  262. and you're being more radical,

  263. that people start to

  264. not like you

  265. because you're always

  266. preaching the Gospel to them.

  267. That should be a reality

  268. in your life.

  269. I hope, maybe,

  270. that you're drawing

  271. some kind of persecution

  272. into your mind

  273. as you live holy

  274. in front of students

  275. on campus,

  276. at your workplace.

  277. People begin to shun you.

  278. They don't want to talk

  279. to you anymore.

  280. You're holier than thou.

  281. I'm hoping this kind of stuff

  282. is drawn to your mind.

  283. But beyond that,

  284. I think all of us

  285. can probably think of

  286. an enemy

  287. all of us probably

  288. have that person

  289. that we just really have

  290. some distaste for

  291. that have in some way

  292. brought an injury

  293. to us.

  294. They've talked bad about us,

  295. tarnished our reputation,

  296. have caused some

  297. ill fate to happen

  298. in one of our classes

  299. or maybe at work.

  300. I have some of these people.

  301. People I haven't gotten

  302. along with too well

  303. throughout my life.

  304. what am I called to do

  305. in Christ

  306. as I deal with

  307. these people?

  308. I am to

  309. give thought

  310. to do

  311. what is

  312. honorable.

  313. I am meant

  314. to bless them.

  315. In this is love.

  316. Remember,

  317. we're talking about

  318. genuine love.

  319. In this is love.

  320. that while we were

  321. enemies of God,

  322. Christ died

  323. for us.

  324. We're meant

  325. to be

  326. Christ-like.

  327. We're meant

  328. to exalt

  329. Christ

  330. in our living.

  331. So the

  332. reasonable act,

  333. this is what Paul

  334. is saying to us,

  335. the reasonable response

  336. to the gospel truth

  337. in our life

  338. is that we

  339. bless,

  340. we genuinely

  341. love

  342. those who

  343. hate

  344. us.

  345. it's the

  346. reasonable thing

  347. to do.

  348. Not particularly

  349. complicated.

  350. Just the thing

  351. we should

  352. be doing

  353. is expressing

  354. love

  355. in this way.

  356. Giving thought

  357. to what is

  358. honorable,

  359. which means

  360. in the Greek

  361. intrinsically good,

  362. proper,

  363. obviously right,

  364. outward.

  365. It's expressed

  366. goodness.

  367. goodness.

  368. It's not just

  369. that you

  370. bottle it up

  371. and you don't

  372. let out

  373. what's really

  374. going on

  375. inside your

  376. head.

  377. It's not

  378. just that you

  379. bite your

  380. tongue,

  381. but it's that

  382. you actually

  383. express

  384. goodness.

  385. That you're

  386. obviously

  387. right-acting

  388. outwardly

  389. towards people

  390. who hate

  391. you.

  392. It's meant

  393. to be done

  394. in such a way

  395. that it's

  396. honorable in

  397. the sight

  398. of all.

  399. That people

  400. marvel at

  401. who we are

  402. as Christians.

  403. this speaks

  404. to those of

  405. you who

  406. will go

  407. around the

  408. world

  409. and will

  410. be persecuted

  411. severely

  412. for your

  413. faith.

  414. But it

  415. certainly

  416. speaks of

  417. us now.

  418. As so

  419. many Christians

  420. try to

  421. stand their

  422. ground,

  423. defend their

  424. rights,

  425. be right

  426. about everything

  427. all the

  428. time.

  429. We ought

  430. to be a

  431. people who

  432. are characterized

  433. by our

  434. genuine

  435. love,

  436. even for

  437. those who

  438. hate us.

  439. if

  440. possible,

  441. so far

  442. as it

  443. depends on

  444. us,

  445. we're

  446. meant to

  447. live

  448. peaceably

  449. with all.

  450. And I,

  451. I mean,

  452. obviously I

  453. love God

  454. and his

  455. spirit and

  456. his moving

  457. and Paul's

  458. writing,

  459. so as I

  460. say this,

  461. know that.

  462. I love

  463. Paul's

  464. writing.

  465. Paul always

  466. very,

  467. very,

  468. very carefully

  469. articulates

  470. what he

  471. means,

  472. and I

  473. appreciate that

  474. about him.

  475. Right?

  476. He gives

  477. us our

  478. caveat at

  479. this point.

  480. If possible,

  481. so far as it

  482. depends on you,

  483. live peaceably

  484. with all.

  485. There's not

  486. a chance that

  487. every situation

  488. is going to

  489. be peaceable.

  490. You're going

  491. to have

  492. people who

  493. are going

  494. to come

  495. at you,

  496. and you're

  497. to do

  498. everything you

  499. can to

  500. sort that

  501. situation,

  502. to live

  503. peaceably.

  504. Peaceable

  505. relationships

  506. take two

  507. sides.

  508. There's just

  509. no way you

  510. can work in

  511. the heart

  512. of someone

  513. else.

  514. But as

  515. far as it

  516. depends on

  517. you,

  518. your part

  519. in it,

  520. you are

  521. to live

  522. peaceably.

  523. It reminds

  524. me of when

  525. Jesus is

  526. giving the

  527. woes to

  528. the Pharisees,

  529. and he

  530. talks to

  531. them about

  532. how they

  533. should clean

  534. their cup

  535. and their

  536. plate first.

  537. We have

  538. no business

  539. cleaning up

  540. the plates

  541. and cups

  542. of other

  543. people.

  544. We're to

  545. clean our

  546. own cup,

  547. our own

  548. plate,

  549. as far as

  550. it depends

  551. on us,

  552. that we

  553. live peaceably

  554. with all.

  555. So are

  556. you in a

  557. situation now

  558. where there's

  559. disunity,

  560. there's a

  561. disruption in

  562. peace in a

  563. relationship you

  564. may have?

  565. You need to

  566. ask yourself

  567. this question,

  568. have I done

  569. everything I

  570. can possibly

  571. do to have

  572. peace with

  573. this person?

  574. I am not

  575. a political

  576. person.

  577. I don't enjoy

  578. the politics

  579. of relationships.

  580. some of

  581. you who

  582. are in

  583. the

  584. dating

  585. realm

  586. right

  587. now

  588. would

  589. say

  590. I

  591. hate

  592. games.

  593. Just

  594. don't

  595. enjoy

  596. that.

  597. I'm a

  598. straight

  599. shooter.

  600. You tell

  601. me how

  602. you feel,

  603. I'll tell

  604. you how

  605. I feel,

  606. what I

  607. say is

  608. what I

  609. mean.

  610. That's

  611. the kind

  612. of person

  613. I am.

  614. And often

  615. when I get

  616. pulled into

  617. some situations

  618. that I

  619. really shouldn't

  620. even be

  621. involved in

  622. to begin

  623. with,

  624. I have

  625. to remind

  626. myself

  627. of this.

  628. You know

  629. a situation

  630. where somebody

  631. has maybe

  632. said something

  633. about you

  634. and somebody

  635. else has

  636. taken it

  637. and they've

  638. run with

  639. it and

  640. they're

  641. thinking

  642. badly

  643. of you

  644. and you

  645. think to

  646. yourself,

  647. this shouldn't

  648. even be a

  649. problem.

  650. I don't know

  651. if you do

  652. that,

  653. but I do.

  654. I'm like,

  655. I'm going to

  656. spend my

  657. time on

  658. this,

  659. are you

  660. kidding me?

  661. Maybe I

  662. can just

  663. ignore it

  664. and it

  665. will go

  666. away.

  667. Somebody

  668. is showing

  669. you some

  670. disdain

  671. for something

  672. they heard.

  673. This

  674. scripture has

  675. meant a lot

  676. in my life

  677. as I've

  678. dealt with

  679. situations

  680. like that

  681. to ask

  682. myself,

  683. have I

  684. done

  685. everything I

  686. can do

  687. to be

  688. at peace

  689. with these

  690. people?

  691. Have I

  692. gone the

  693. extra step?

  694. Have I

  695. expressed

  696. outward

  697. goodness

  698. in the

  699. situation?

  700. Not

  701. stayed

  702. neutral,

  703. but actually

  704. involved

  705. myself

  706. and engaged

  707. the people

  708. that I

  709. might have

  710. peace

  711. with them?

  712. It's going

  713. to require

  714. an effort

  715. on our

  716. part

  717. to do

  718. this.

  719. And we

  720. turn then

  721. in verse

  722. 19.

  723. So as

  724. we are

  725. seeking the

  726. peace,

  727. as we

  728. are

  729. expressing

  730. outward

  731. goodness

  732. to those

  733. who are

  734. persecuting

  735. us,

  736. Paul then

  737. comes along

  738. and quotes

  739. from Deuteronomy

  740. 32-35

  741. a comfort

  742. to us.

  743. As we're

  744. not going

  745. to be able

  746. to sort

  747. every situation

  748. out.

  749. As we're

  750. not going

  751. to be able

  752. or shouldn't

  753. be defending

  754. every tit

  755. and tat

  756. of our

  757. rights.

  758. He writes

  759. beloved,

  760. those who

  761. are found

  762. in Christ,

  763. never

  764. avenge

  765. yourselves,

  766. but leave

  767. it to the

  768. wrath of

  769. God.

  770. For it

  771. is written,

  772. vengeance

  773. is mine,

  774. I will

  775. repay,

  776. says the

  777. Lord.

  778. So here

  779. is the

  780. final

  781. judgment

  782. Paul is

  783. speaking about

  784. here.

  785. Paul says

  786. in Nathan's

  787. simple terms,

  788. don't worry

  789. about it,

  790. I'll sort

  791. it out

  792. in the

  793. end.

  794. Love,

  795. outwardly

  796. express

  797. genuine

  798. love to

  799. those who

  800. are your

  801. enemies,

  802. those who

  803. persecute

  804. you,

  805. and just

  806. trust that

  807. in the

  808. end,

  809. it'll get

  810. sorted,

  811. they'll get

  812. what's due

  813. them,

  814. and you'll

  815. get what's

  816. due you.

  817. This

  818. ability

  819. to trust

  820. in the

  821. goodness

  822. of God

  823. in all

  824. of these

  825. situations,

  826. to be

  827. able to

  828. overflow

  829. love on

  830. people that

  831. from a

  832. worldly

  833. standard

  834. don't

  835. really

  836. deserve

  837. it,

  838. is

  839. one of

  840. the

  841. marks

  842. of a

  843. true

  844. Christian.

  845. That's

  846. what

  847. Paul is

  848. saying

  849. here to

  850. us.

  851. Actually,

  852. if you're

  853. subtitled the

  854. way I

  855. am,

  856. marks

  857. of the

  858. true

  859. Christian.

  860. It's

  861. where we

  862. start in

  863. verse

  864. 9.

  865. Matthew

  866. 6,

  867. 14 and

  868. 15.

  869. this is

  870. the

  871. Sermon

  872. on the

  873. Mount.

  874. Jesus

  875. says,

  876. For if

  877. you forgive

  878. others

  879. their

  880. trespasses,

  881. your

  882. heavenly

  883. Father

  884. will also

  885. forgive

  886. you.

  887. But if

  888. you do

  889. not

  890. forgive

  891. others

  892. their

  893. trespasses,

  894. neither

  895. will your

  896. Father

  897. forgive

  898. your

  899. trespasses.

  900. Is

  901. Jesus

  902. saying

  903. to us

  904. that the

  905. salvation

  906. of your

  907. soul

  908. is

  909. dependent

  910. on

  911. your

  912. works?

  913. No,

  914. He

  915. is not.

  916. But what

  917. He is

  918. saying

  919. to us

  920. is that

  921. if you

  922. have been

  923. forgiven

  924. in

  925. Christ,

  926. the

  927. natural

  928. reaction,

  929. the

  930. obvious

  931. outcome,

  932. the

  933. outflow

  934. of that,

  935. of a

  936. changed

  937. heart,

  938. will be

  939. forgiveness

  940. for others.

  941. Isn't that

  942. exactly what

  943. Paul is

  944. saying to

  945. us now?

  946. Glorious

  947. truth of

  948. the

  949. gospel.

  950. Obvious

  951. thing is a

  952. self-sacrificing

  953. love for

  954. God,

  955. right?

  956. that

  957. works

  958. itself

  959. out

  960. in

  961. genuine

  962. love

  963. and

  964. doesn't

  965. hold

  966. wrong

  967. against

  968. other

  969. people,

  970. that

  971. blesses

  972. those

  973. who

  974. persecute,

  975. that

  976. outwardly

  977. expresses

  978. love

  979. for

  980. them,

  981. that

  982. doesn't

  983. repay

  984. evil

  985. for

  986. evil,

  987. that

  988. doesn't

  989. worry

  990. about

  991. how it

  992. sorts

  993. in the

  994. end.

  995. So the

  996. question for

  997. you becomes,

  998. if you

  999. are doing

  1000. the opposite

  1001. of this,

  1002. if you

  1003. feel like

  1004. when somebody

  1005. wronged you,

  1006. you have to

  1007. get back

  1008. at them,

  1009. are you

  1010. a Christian?

  1011. It's a

  1012. test.

  1013. It's a

  1014. measure

  1015. of your

  1016. faith.

  1017. Now,

  1018. we all

  1019. fail at

  1020. things like

  1021. this.

  1022. So just

  1023. because you

  1024. don't do

  1025. this in

  1026. a moment

  1027. doesn't

  1028. make you

  1029. not a

  1030. Christian.

  1031. We

  1032. certainly

  1033. sin,

  1034. yet we're

  1035. secure

  1036. in God's

  1037. hand.

  1038. But take

  1039. a look

  1040. at your

  1041. life.

  1042. It's

  1043. the

  1044. overarching

  1045. theme

  1046. in this

  1047. particular

  1048. regard

  1049. that you

  1050. get back,

  1051. that you

  1052. want to

  1053. deliver evil

  1054. for evil,

  1055. that you

  1056. want to

  1057. stand for

  1058. your rights,

  1059. that you're

  1060. all about

  1061. you,

  1062. your

  1063. kingdom.

  1064. Because if

  1065. anybody invades

  1066. your kingdom

  1067. and tries to

  1068. dethrone you,

  1069. you have to

  1070. defend it.

  1071. The true

  1072. Christian says

  1073. God's on

  1074. the throne.

  1075. Vengeance

  1076. is his.

  1077. He'll

  1078. repay.

  1079. I'm not

  1080. too worried

  1081. about it.

  1082. I live

  1083. in a

  1084. theocracy.

  1085. I live

  1086. in a

  1087. theocracy

  1088. where I

  1089. have no

  1090. rights

  1091. except to

  1092. serve my

  1093. king,

  1094. and he

  1095. will deal

  1096. accordingly.

  1097. Listen

  1098. to Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  1099. chapter 10,

  1100. beginning in

  1101. verse 26.

  1102. The author

  1103. of Hebrews

  1104. writes,

  1105. For if we

  1106. go on

  1107. sinning

  1108. deliberately

  1109. after receiving

  1110. the knowledge

  1111. of the truth,

  1112. there no

  1113. longer remains

  1114. a sacrifice

  1115. for sins,

  1116. but a

  1117. fearful

  1118. expectation

  1119. of judgment

  1120. and a

  1121. fury of

  1122. fire that

  1123. will consume

  1124. the

  1125. adversaries.

  1126. Anyone who

  1127. has set

  1128. aside the

  1129. law of

  1130. Moses dies

  1131. without mercy

  1132. on the

  1133. evidence of

  1134. two or

  1135. three witnesses.

  1136. How much

  1137. worse punishment

  1138. do you think

  1139. will be

  1140. deserved by

  1141. the one who

  1142. has trampled

  1143. underfoot

  1144. the Son

  1145. of God

  1146. and has

  1147. profaned

  1148. the blood

  1149. of the

  1150. covenant

  1151. by which

  1152. he was

  1153. sanctified

  1154. and has

  1155. outraged

  1156. the Spirit

  1157. of grace?

  1158. For we

  1159. know him

  1160. who said,

  1161. Vengeance

  1162. is mine,

  1163. I will

  1164. repay,

  1165. and again

  1166. the Lord

  1167. will judge

  1168. his people.

  1169. This is

  1170. Deuteronomy

  1171. 32,

  1172. 35.

  1173. It is a

  1174. fearful thing

  1175. to fall

  1176. into the

  1177. hands

  1178. of the

  1179. living God.

  1180. So that

  1181. language

  1182. wasn't super

  1183. simple,

  1184. so hear

  1185. what he's

  1186. saying to

  1187. you.

  1188. If we

  1189. go on

  1190. sinning,

  1191. saying

  1192. that we're

  1193. Christians,

  1194. saying that

  1195. we walk

  1196. in the

  1197. light,

  1198. and yet

  1199. we persist

  1200. in our

  1201. sin.

  1202. He used

  1203. the example

  1204. of the

  1205. Old Testament.

  1206. If we

  1207. are breaking

  1208. the law

  1209. of the

  1210. commandment,

  1211. we have

  1212. two or

  1213. three witnesses

  1214. we're

  1215. condemned.

  1216. How much

  1217. more,

  1218. if we go

  1219. on sinning,

  1220. having the

  1221. revelation

  1222. of Jesus

  1223. Christ,

  1224. we're

  1225. trampling

  1226. underfoot

  1227. the Son

  1228. of God,

  1229. we've

  1230. profaned the

  1231. blood of

  1232. the covenant

  1233. by which

  1234. we're

  1235. sanctified.

  1236. We've

  1237. outraged

  1238. the Spirit

  1239. of grace.

  1240. He's

  1241. saying,

  1242. how much

  1243. more

  1244. will God

  1245. repay?

  1246. It is a

  1247. fearful

  1248. thing to

  1249. fall into

  1250. the hands

  1251. of the

  1252. living God.

  1253. So my

  1254. encouragement

  1255. in this

  1256. is that you

  1257. examine

  1258. your life.

  1259. love.

  1260. I would

  1261. say that

  1262. all of

  1263. us need

  1264. to do

  1265. better

  1266. at

  1267. exuding

  1268. love,

  1269. at living

  1270. in light

  1271. of the

  1272. gospel,

  1273. at genuinely

  1274. being concerned

  1275. for and

  1276. caring for

  1277. our enemies,

  1278. rejoicing

  1279. with them,

  1280. and weeping

  1281. with them.

  1282. There's a tie

  1283. in there.

  1284. We have a

  1285. true humility

  1286. recognizing that

  1287. we really have

  1288. no rights.

  1289. But ask

  1290. yourself,

  1291. do you have

  1292. the capacity

  1293. for it?

  1294. Has your

  1295. heart been

  1296. changed at

  1297. all?

  1298. Out of the

  1299. outflow of

  1300. your heart,

  1301. this is

  1302. possible.

  1303. Who you

  1304. are at

  1305. your very

  1306. core,

  1307. and without

  1308. Christ at

  1309. your core,

  1310. you're utterly

  1311. sinful.

  1312. You're

  1313. incapable of

  1314. doing anything

  1315. to please

  1316. God.

  1317. Even your

  1318. best effort

  1319. is distasteful

  1320. to Him.

  1321. ask yourself

  1322. that question

  1323. this morning.

  1324. The beautiful

  1325. thing is that

  1326. either way,

  1327. there's a

  1328. simple answer.

  1329. Whether you

  1330. stand firm

  1331. knowing you're

  1332. a Christian,

  1333. knowing though

  1334. that you

  1335. struggle with

  1336. this,

  1337. that you

  1338. must press

  1339. harder to

  1340. love your

  1341. enemies,

  1342. or recognizing

  1343. maybe for the

  1344. first time,

  1345. I'm not

  1346. saved.

  1347. I've been

  1348. doing this

  1349. church thing

  1350. for a long

  1351. time,

  1352. I've got

  1353. knowledge in

  1354. my head,

  1355. but I'm

  1356. not actually

  1357. a Christian.

  1358. The answer

  1359. to both

  1360. problems is

  1361. to repent

  1362. and believe.

  1363. Turn from

  1364. your sin

  1365. and place

  1366. your faith

  1367. in Jesus

  1368. Christ.

  1369. Let me tell

  1370. you,

  1371. that's going

  1372. to look

  1373. practical

  1374. sometimes.

  1375. Repentance

  1376. is certainly

  1377. a change

  1378. in heart.

  1379. It's certainly

  1380. a recognition

  1381. that we've

  1382. sinned against

  1383. the Most Holy

  1384. God,

  1385. and it's a

  1386. turning away

  1387. from that

  1388. to the good

  1389. things of

  1390. God.

  1391. But those

  1392. good things

  1393. of God

  1394. are often

  1395. practical,

  1396. particularly

  1397. in this

  1398. arena.

  1399. Christians,

  1400. you may

  1401. find as

  1402. you repent

  1403. that there

  1404. are some

  1405. things that

  1406. you need

  1407. to go get

  1408. sorted.

  1409. You need

  1410. to go do

  1411. your part

  1412. for the

  1413. peace in

  1414. a situation.

  1415. You may

  1416. be drawn

  1417. to a

  1418. situation in

  1419. your life,

  1420. in your

  1421. mind,

  1422. that God

  1423. is calling

  1424. you to

  1425. work out.

  1426. Please let

  1427. your repentance

  1428. be complete.

  1429. Don't just

  1430. turn from

  1431. the sin.

  1432. I should

  1433. really be

  1434. nicer to

  1435. that

  1436. individual.

  1437. Go be

  1438. nice to

  1439. them.

  1440. Go exhibit

  1441. genuine

  1442. love.

  1443. Paul says

  1444. it well

  1445. in verse

  1446. 20.

  1447. I like it

  1448. when I do

  1449. accidental

  1450. segues.

  1451. Verse 20.

  1452. He says,

  1453. to the

  1454. contrary,

  1455. rather than

  1456. repaying evil

  1457. for evil,

  1458. rather than

  1459. hating back

  1460. your enemy.

  1461. He quotes

  1462. from Proverbs

  1463. 25,

  1464. 21,

  1465. and 22.

  1466. If your

  1467. enemy is

  1468. hungry,

  1469. feed him.

  1470. If he is

  1471. thirsty,

  1472. give him

  1473. something to

  1474. drink.

  1475. For by so

  1476. doing,

  1477. you will

  1478. heap burning

  1479. coals on

  1480. his head.

  1481. He says,

  1482. do the

  1483. very opposite.

  1484. That's what

  1485. we've been

  1486. talking about.

  1487. Genuinely

  1488. love.

  1489. Don't

  1490. replay evil

  1491. for evil.

  1492. Genuinely

  1493. love them.

  1494. Feed them.

  1495. Give them

  1496. something to

  1497. drink.

  1498. And then

  1499. an interesting

  1500. phrase.

  1501. For by

  1502. so doing,

  1503. you will

  1504. heap burning

  1505. coals on

  1506. his head.

  1507. Now,

  1508. I'd like to

  1509. admit that I

  1510. did not have

  1511. the time this

  1512. week to

  1513. give this

  1514. the scholastic

  1515. attention I

  1516. would have

  1517. liked to.

  1518. However,

  1519. there's much

  1520. debate over

  1521. exactly what

  1522. he means

  1523. by this.

  1524. It is a

  1525. quote.

  1526. Proverbs

  1527. 25.

  1528. It's verse

  1529. 22.

  1530. Right?

  1531. For you

  1532. will heap

  1533. burning

  1534. coals on

  1535. his head

  1536. and the

  1537. Lord will

  1538. reward you.

  1539. That's exactly

  1540. how that

  1541. reads in

  1542. the ESV.

  1543. Right?

  1544. So,

  1545. we're called

  1546. then in

  1547. our genuine

  1548. love to

  1549. do these

  1550. things,

  1551. these outward

  1552. expressions,

  1553. these honorable

  1554. things for

  1555. those who are

  1556. our enemies

  1557. for,

  1558. because,

  1559. so that,

  1560. in doing

  1561. it,

  1562. we're going

  1563. to heap

  1564. burning

  1565. coals

  1566. on their

  1567. head.

  1568. I found

  1569. one commentator.

  1570. You guys

  1571. know I like

  1572. to use the

  1573. Johns,

  1574. John MacArthur,

  1575. John Piper,

  1576. and Jonathan

  1577. Edwards.

  1578. So,

  1579. the Johns,

  1580. one of the

  1581. Johns said

  1582. that there's

  1583. an ancient

  1584. Egyptian

  1585. tradition

  1586. that if

  1587. you wanted

  1588. to be

  1589. publicly

  1590. repentant,

  1591. that you

  1592. filled a

  1593. pan with

  1594. coals and

  1595. you put

  1596. it on

  1597. your head

  1598. and you

  1599. walked

  1600. around to

  1601. show people

  1602. the searing

  1603. of your

  1604. mind,

  1605. the burning

  1606. of the

  1607. guilt of

  1608. something that

  1609. you had

  1610. done.

  1611. One of the

  1612. other Johns

  1613. said that he

  1614. has never

  1615. found in

  1616. any record

  1617. anywhere that

  1618. that's a

  1619. reality.

  1620. Respect both

  1621. of them a

  1622. lot.

  1623. So,

  1624. I just

  1625. really don't

  1626. know in

  1627. that case

  1628. what exactly

  1629. they mean.

  1630. So,

  1631. one of the

  1632. Johns says

  1633. that the

  1634. act of

  1635. heaping

  1636. burning

  1637. coals on

  1638. the head

  1639. is a

  1640. conviction

  1641. to.

  1642. Right?

  1643. So,

  1644. we have

  1645. enemies that

  1646. are treating

  1647. us one

  1648. way and

  1649. we do

  1650. the opposite.

  1651. We show

  1652. them this

  1653. genuine love

  1654. and it

  1655. becomes a

  1656. conviction

  1657. for them.

  1658. It exposes

  1659. their evil.

  1660. Our

  1661. goodness

  1662. exposes

  1663. their evil

  1664. and therefore

  1665. becomes a

  1666. conviction

  1667. to them.

  1668. The other

  1669. says that it

  1670. has to do

  1671. with God's

  1672. judgment.

  1673. That other

  1674. places that this

  1675. phrasing is used

  1676. in Greek

  1677. literature,

  1678. it has to do

  1679. ultimately

  1680. with final

  1681. judgment.

  1682. judgment.

  1683. What I

  1684. would say

  1685. to you

  1686. is that

  1687. probably

  1688. both are

  1689. true.

  1690. Because it

  1691. stands between

  1692. these two

  1693. verses.

  1694. Does it

  1695. not?

  1696. It stands

  1697. between

  1698. 19

  1699. where he

  1700. quotes,

  1701. Paul quotes

  1702. Deuteronomy

  1703. 32-35,

  1704. vengeance is

  1705. mine,

  1706. I will

  1707. repay,

  1708. says the

  1709. Lord.

  1710. And it

  1711. moves to

  1712. verse 21,

  1713. do not be

  1714. overcome by

  1715. evil,

  1716. but overcome

  1717. evil with

  1718. good.

  1719. And maybe

  1720. rather than

  1721. saying that

  1722. it can mean

  1723. two things,

  1724. we should

  1725. really mean

  1726. that it

  1727. means one

  1728. thing,

  1729. and that

  1730. is that

  1731. it brings

  1732. these

  1733. individuals

  1734. to a

  1735. realization

  1736. of the

  1737. wrath of

  1738. God,

  1739. which is to

  1740. them the

  1741. conviction

  1742. of their

  1743. sin.

  1744. Maybe.

  1745. I bet if I

  1746. got the

  1747. Johns in a

  1748. room,

  1749. they would

  1750. agree with

  1751. me.

  1752. We'll see.

  1753. That'll never

  1754. happen.

  1755. Never mind,

  1756. we won't

  1757. see.

  1758. But just

  1759. the same,

  1760. I think

  1761. that's where

  1762. he's headed.

  1763. So,

  1764. quoting from

  1765. Proverbs,

  1766. we have

  1767. these acts

  1768. of selflessness,

  1769. this giving

  1770. to those

  1771. who really,

  1772. by all

  1773. human terms,

  1774. we ought

  1775. not be

  1776. feeding and

  1777. giving drink

  1778. to.

  1779. We really

  1780. probably should

  1781. be letting

  1782. them starve

  1783. and die

  1784. of thirst,

  1785. but we're

  1786. instead going

  1787. to show

  1788. them this

  1789. genuine

  1790. expression

  1791. of love.

  1792. And verse

  1793. 21 says,

  1794. do not

  1795. be overcome

  1796. by evil,

  1797. but overcome

  1798. evil with

  1799. good.

  1800. And I think

  1801. there's our

  1802. connection of

  1803. why we ought

  1804. to think that

  1805. this should

  1806. be a conviction

  1807. to them,

  1808. that it should

  1809. be an

  1810. exposing element

  1811. in their

  1812. life.

  1813. And verse

  1814. 21 has

  1815. two implications,

  1816. that we

  1817. shouldn't be

  1818. overcome by

  1819. the evil

  1820. done to us,

  1821. we shouldn't

  1822. permit it to

  1823. overwhelm us,

  1824. right,

  1825. because God

  1826. will judge,

  1827. we know that

  1828. we have a

  1829. good and a

  1830. just God,

  1831. that we are

  1832. his people,

  1833. that all

  1834. things are

  1835. working for

  1836. our good

  1837. back in

  1838. chapter 8

  1839. now,

  1840. right,

  1841. that we

  1842. are eternally

  1843. secure in

  1844. his hands,

  1845. that nothing

  1846. can take us

  1847. from his

  1848. hand,

  1849. chapter 9,

  1850. right,

  1851. so we

  1852. shouldn't allow

  1853. the evil

  1854. done to us

  1855. to overwhelm

  1856. us.

  1857. We shouldn't

  1858. permit that

  1859. to happen,

  1860. because God

  1861. has made

  1862. promises,

  1863. and his

  1864. promises are

  1865. good,

  1866. they're yes

  1867. and amen

  1868. in Jesus

  1869. Christ.

  1870. first,

  1871. but secondly,

  1872. and I think

  1873. maybe more

  1874. importantly,

  1875. we also

  1876. must not

  1877. allow ourselves

  1878. to be

  1879. overcome by

  1880. our own

  1881. desire to

  1882. respond with

  1883. evil,

  1884. right,

  1885. but instead

  1886. we should

  1887. overcome the

  1888. evil with

  1889. our good,

  1890. right,

  1891. so don't

  1892. let your

  1893. enemy's

  1894. hostility

  1895. produce

  1896. hostility in

  1897. you,

  1898. but let

  1899. your love

  1900. triumph over

  1901. his hostility,

  1902. whether or

  1903. not you

  1904. see that

  1905. as a

  1906. reality now,

  1907. it will

  1908. in fact

  1909. one day

  1910. be true,

  1911. God will

  1912. sort it

  1913. in the

  1914. end.

  1915. Do not

  1916. let another

  1917. person's

  1918. sin make

  1919. you sin,

  1920. right,

  1921. stand as

  1922. those

  1923. redeemed,

  1924. changed by

  1925. the gospel

  1926. of grace,

  1927. right,

  1928. changed,

  1929. we're different

  1930. than the world,

  1931. and therefore

  1932. we ought to

  1933. respond differently.

  1934. It is our

  1935. reasonable

  1936. service,

  1937. right,

  1938. verse 2,

  1939. it's our

  1940. reasonable

  1941. service.

  1942. It's not a

  1943. crazy thing

  1944. he's asked

  1945. us to do,

  1946. it's a

  1947. reasonable

  1948. response

  1949. to the

  1950. goodness

  1951. of the

  1952. gospel.

  1953. I'm going

  1954. to read

  1955. to you

  1956. just a

  1957. short

  1958. excerpt

  1959. from a

  1960. great book,

  1961. if you

  1962. don't have

  1963. this,

  1964. you can

  1965. get it

  1966. for free

  1967. from

  1968. Voice of

  1969. the

  1970. Martyrs

  1971. called

  1972. Tortured

  1973. for Christ,

  1974. and it's

  1975. written by

  1976. a man

  1977. named

  1978. Richard

  1979. Wurmbrand

  1980. who

  1981. founded

  1982. Voice of

  1983. the

  1984. Martyrs,

  1985. lived in,

  1986. I'm going

  1987. to forget

  1988. the country,

  1989. I believe

  1990. Romania,

  1991. during

  1992. communist

  1993. oppression,

  1994. and was

  1995. imprisoned

  1996. multiple

  1997. times

  1998. for his

  1999. faith.

  2000. It's a

  2001. very simple,

  2002. really good

  2003. read,

  2004. I'd really

  2005. encourage you

  2006. to pick

  2007. it up,

  2008. but let me

  2009. just read

  2010. you a

  2011. little

  2012. excerpt,

  2013. as he

  2014. writes

  2015. about a

  2016. man named

  2017. Grecu,

  2018. and he

  2019. has been,

  2020. Grecu has

  2021. been being

  2022. continually,

  2023. slowly,

  2024. beaten to

  2025. death

  2026. by his

  2027. captor,

  2028. a man

  2029. named

  2030. Rek.

  2031. So they're

  2032. intentionally

  2033. keeping him

  2034. alive and

  2035. prolonging the

  2036. sentence of

  2037. him being

  2038. beat to

  2039. death.

  2040. They're

  2041. medicating

  2042. him and

  2043. feeding him

  2044. and then

  2045. beating him

  2046. to within

  2047. an inch of

  2048. his life

  2049. and then

  2050. bringing him

  2051. back and

  2052. beating him

  2053. again.

  2054. And

  2055. listen to this,

  2056. just listen to

  2057. this record.

  2058. He writes,

  2059. during the

  2060. beatings,

  2061. Rek said

  2062. something to

  2063. Grecu that

  2064. the communists

  2065. often said to

  2066. Christians,

  2067. you know I

  2068. am God.

  2069. I have power

  2070. of life and

  2071. death over

  2072. you.

  2073. The one who

  2074. is in

  2075. heaven cannot

  2076. decide to

  2077. keep you

  2078. in life.

  2079. Everything

  2080. depends upon

  2081. me.

  2082. If I wish

  2083. you live,

  2084. if I wish

  2085. you are

  2086. killed,

  2087. I am

  2088. God.

  2089. So he

  2090. mocked the

  2091. Christian.

  2092. I would

  2093. imagine that

  2094. Grecu knows

  2095. his scriptures

  2096. at this point,

  2097. that in his

  2098. mind he

  2099. says,

  2100. vengeance is

  2101. mine,

  2102. I will

  2103. repay,

  2104. says the

  2105. Lord.

  2106. Right?

  2107. Listen to

  2108. what he

  2109. does,

  2110. his response.

  2111. Brother

  2112. Grecu in

  2113. this horrible

  2114. situation gave

  2115. Rek a very

  2116. interesting answer

  2117. which I heard

  2118. afterward from

  2119. Rek himself.

  2120. He said,

  2121. you don't

  2122. know what a

  2123. deep thing

  2124. you have

  2125. said.

  2126. Every

  2127. caterpillar is

  2128. in reality a

  2129. butterfly if it

  2130. develops rightly.

  2131. You have not

  2132. been created to

  2133. be a torturer,

  2134. a man who

  2135. kills.

  2136. You have been

  2137. created to

  2138. become like

  2139. God with the

  2140. life of the

  2141. Godhead in

  2142. your heart.

  2143. Many who

  2144. have been

  2145. persecutors like

  2146. you have

  2147. come to

  2148. realize,

  2149. like the

  2150. Apostle Paul,

  2151. that it is

  2152. shameful for a

  2153. man to commit

  2154. atrocities,

  2155. that they can

  2156. do much

  2157. better things.

  2158. So they

  2159. become partakers

  2160. of the divine

  2161. nature.

  2162. Jesus said to

  2163. the Jews of

  2164. his time,

  2165. ye are

  2166. gods.

  2167. Believe me,

  2168. Mr.

  2169. Rek,

  2170. your real

  2171. calling is to

  2172. be godlike,

  2173. to have the

  2174. character of

  2175. God,

  2176. not a

  2177. torturer.

  2178. What did

  2179. he do?

  2180. Express the

  2181. ultimate form

  2182. of love as

  2183. he's being

  2184. beaten in a

  2185. presentation of

  2186. the gospel to

  2187. his very

  2188. beater.

  2189. Probably not the

  2190. right word,

  2191. right?

  2192. Is that how you

  2193. would respond in

  2194. that situation?

  2195. It's hard to

  2196. imagine it.

  2197. It's hard to

  2198. think that that's

  2199. the way we would

  2200. respond in that

  2201. situation.

  2202. I think rather we

  2203. would be furious

  2204. that we're in the

  2205. situation, that our

  2206. rights have been

  2207. taken from us,

  2208. that this man

  2209. is doing this

  2210. to us is so

  2211. unfair.

  2212. How dare he?

  2213. Given the

  2214. opportunity, what

  2215. would I do

  2216. back?

  2217. How would I

  2218. defend myself?

  2219. Grecu preaches

  2220. the gospel to

  2221. him.

  2222. And here's the

  2223. result.

  2224. At that moment,

  2225. Rek did not pay

  2226. much attention to

  2227. the words of his

  2228. victim, as Saul

  2229. of Tarsus did

  2230. not pay attention

  2231. to the beautiful

  2232. witness of Stephen

  2233. being killed in

  2234. his presence.

  2235. But those words

  2236. worked in his

  2237. heart, and

  2238. Rek later

  2239. understood that

  2240. this was his

  2241. real calling.

  2242. You remember, he

  2243. said he learned

  2244. this story from

  2245. Rek himself.

  2246. Rek became a

  2247. believer as a

  2248. result, and if

  2249. you read on,

  2250. Grecu died at

  2251. his hands.

  2252. This is the type

  2253. of love we're

  2254. meant to have.

  2255. It's profound.

  2256. It really is.

  2257. It's simple.

  2258. It's a reasonable

  2259. act of service.

  2260. But this is the

  2261. expression of life

  2262. changed by the

  2263. truth of the

  2264. gospel.

  2265. Do you believe

  2266. this morning

  2267. the gospel?

  2268. If you do, this

  2269. will be your

  2270. response.

  2271. And I think it's

  2272. going to work its

  2273. way out in

  2274. different little

  2275. ways.

  2276. Small example,

  2277. when that guy

  2278. cuts you off on

  2279. the road,

  2280. what's our

  2281. response?

  2282. Even just our

  2283. emotional response

  2284. like that.

  2285. Right, I was

  2286. in this lane.

  2287. What's your

  2288. problem?

  2289. Can't see me?

  2290. Good one.

  2291. Yep.

  2292. What is the

  2293. outflow of our

  2294. hearts?

  2295. I think we all

  2296. need to examine

  2297. where we stand

  2298. positionally and

  2299. how, to what

  2300. degree, do we

  2301. actually embrace

  2302. the gospel.

  2303. I pray as we

  2304. will in a minute

  2305. that you'll

  2306. repent and

  2307. believe.

  2308. If you are a

  2309. Christian, that

  2310. you will recognize

  2311. this weakness

  2312. that I believe we

  2313. all can do

  2314. better at.

  2315. Maybe for

  2316. particular situations

  2317. that you need to

  2318. go rectify.

  2319. Part of your

  2320. repentance is to

  2321. actually go do

  2322. what you can do

  2323. to make the

  2324. situation better.

  2325. Some of you may

  2326. not actually be

  2327. Christians in this

  2328. room.

  2329. I pray that you

  2330. would allow God

  2331. to work in your

  2332. heart.

  2333. That you would

  2334. hear his call

  2335. and that you

  2336. would respond

  2337. appropriately.

  2338. If you grew up

  2339. in church and

  2340. you think that

  2341. there's a special

  2342. time that that

  2343. has to happen,

  2344. you're really

  2345. wrong.

  2346. I don't stand

  2347. between you and

  2348. God.

  2349. I'm just another

  2350. Christian.

  2351. We're all saints.

  2352. You have full

  2353. access.

  2354. The temple

  2355. curtain was torn.

  2356. It's symbolic.

  2357. You get to step

  2358. right in there.

  2359. God's working on

  2360. your heart.

  2361. Just step in

  2362. there.

  2363. Repent.

  2364. Confess.

  2365. Confess that

  2366. you're a sinner

  2367. and you need

  2368. him.

  2369. That you're dead

  2370. and you need

  2371. the life that

  2372. is in Christ.

  2373. I'm here to

  2374. help you later.

  2375. After the fact.

  2376. Come talk to me.

  2377. Let's get you

  2378. involved in

  2379. discipleship.

  2380. Let's get you

  2381. engaged in the

  2382. church.

  2383. There's great

  2384. grace to us

  2385. that we have

  2386. to grow together.

  2387. Don't think you

  2388. have to wait

  2389. for an invitation

  2390. to do it.

  2391. You're being

  2392. invited right now.

  2393. Respond to the

  2394. gospel.

  2395. Respond.

  2396. The Spirit

  2397. is inviting you.
