  1. I've heard of your Bibles through Romans 13.

  2. I'm going to apologize right now because I have some sinus stuff going on.

  3. ! It's really messed my throat up.

  4. So the college students who heard me on Thursday night, they're probably like,

  5. Oh no, listening to this for another hour.

  6. So I apologize, but I trust that God will work despite of my voice.

  7. But just join me in prayer real fast.

  8. Father, I'm just thankful to be with your people this morning.

  9. Thank you for your word and how it ministers to our souls.

  10. Show us how important it is that we learn how to relate to our authorities in a manner that glorifies you.

  11. And Lord, this is written for our good and you have great purpose and reason, Lord.

  12. So help me just be able to communicate what's true.

  13. And Lord, what's not really my own opinion, Lord, but just to focus on what your word says.

  14. And for you to receive the glory this morning.

  15. In Christ's name, amen.

  16. Well, we're in Romans 13 now.

  17. And for those of you who have been following along in Romans, these latter chapters of Romans are focused mainly toward the practical outworking of the gospel in our lives.

  18. He spent a huge number of chapters covering biblical doctrine on salvation, the gospel, the sinfulness of man, the grace of God, justification by faith in Christ.

  19. And now, like in response to that, how does that look like in our lives?

  20. And so that's kind of where we're going today.

  21. It's where we were last week.

  22. We talked about letting love be genuine and the outworking of love in our lives to others.

  23. And now we come to the topic of government.

  24. But before we get going, I just want to say that my goal this morning is not to give a situational ethics course on government.

  25. Like if this happens, how do we respond in any little small particular way?

  26. But more or less just about the overall biblical teaching about what government is.

  27. We do have like more specifics about that in ethics and how we respond when government does this or government does that.

  28. Those kind of ideas, but really not the goal this morning.

  29. And also to remember that like government is going to be a gift to us.

  30. It is a gift from the Lord.

  31. We're going to look at that this morning.

  32. But I only have two questions this morning to kind of split this text up, verses 1 through 7.

  33. But underneath those, we have some sub points, if you want to call them that, as answering those questions.

  34. But just getting into it, the first question is, what is the divine purpose of government?

  35. What is the divine purpose of government?

  36. And we see this in verses 1 through 4.

  37. Let every person be subject to governing authorities.

  38. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.

  39. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment.

  40. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad.

  41. When you have no fear of the one who is in authority, then do what is good, and you will receive his approval.

  42. For he is God's servant for your good.

  43. But if you do wrong, be afraid.

  44. For he does not bear the sword in vain.

  45. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

  46. So, verses 1 through 4 kind of give us a place to kind of say this is what God's divine purpose for government is.

  47. So, the little sub points under this.

  48. The first one, the sub point under this is government is by divine decree.

  49. And we see this in verse 1.

  50. No authority except from God.

  51. And those that exist have been instituted by God.

  52. So, all human governments, regardless of their form, have been ordained by God.

  53. And he's ordained them ultimately for the good of all societies.

  54. And to protect them, to serve their good.

  55. And, but they're all, regardless of what government in history, ones today, ones that will be eventually.

  56. We need to understand that like all of them, regardless of how evil they may be,

  57. are still under the sovereign control of God.

  58. Still under the providence of God.

  59. And he uses them for his own means.

  60. Even, it's kind of the mystery of how God's sovereignty works.

  61. He even allows the actions of evil men to play right into his plan every time.

  62. And learning that whatever we intend for evil, God intends for good.

  63. And there's nothing that we can do.

  64. The cross being the ultimate example of that.

  65. When evil men crucified the Son of God, it actually played into God's plan in destroying evil.

  66. And so like God has a plan A, there's no plan B.

  67. He's working it all out.

  68. And he uses governments to achieve that.

  69. And turning the book of Daniel real fast.

  70. I'm just going to show you two passages in Daniel.

  71. But Daniel was an amazing book to go to in relation to how we should live in government.

  72. And he himself saw many kingdoms come and go.

  73. Many empires rise and fall in his own life.

  74. And even foresaw the future.

  75. But Daniel chapter 2, go there first.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  76. Daniel chapter 2 verse 20.

    Daniel 2:20

  77. So we're going to learn here that God sovereignly works in and through both good and evil governments to accomplish his purposes.

  78. Things don't just happen.

  79. So Daniel 2 verse 20.

    Daniel 2:20

  80. Daniel answered and said,

  81. Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might.

  82. He changes times and seasons.

  83. He removes kings and setups kings.

  84. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.

  85. He reveals the deep and hidden things.

  86. He knows what is in the darkness and the light that dwells with him.

  87. So, one example.

  88. We'll flip over just two chapters to Daniel 4 real fast.

  89. And this is a confession of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.

  90. And who himself was a very powerful ruler over men.

  91. And he had great wealth and great power.

  92. And God ended up humbling him through a series of events.

  93. And to kind of show him that he really didn't have any power in and of himself.

  94. That it was all granted by God.

  95. And so Nebuchadnezzar, in verse 34, if you go to verse 34, says,

  96. At the end of the days, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven.

  97. And my reason returned to me.

  98. And I blessed the Most High and praised and honored him who lives forever.

  99. For his dominion is an everlasting dominion.

  100. And his kingdom endures from generation to generation.

  101. All the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing.

  102. And he does according to his will among the hosts of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth.

  103. And no one can stay his hand or say to him,

  104. What have you done?

  105. And that's a picture of, like, unrivaled sovereignty.

  106. God himself, you know, we talk about the kingdom of God.

  107. And we tend to think as Westerners, as Americans, that democracy is the best form of government on the planet.

  108. That can be argued in a lot of ways.

  109. I would say that it's probably one of the best in the broken, sinful world we live in.

  110. But the majority can be wrong, as we've learned throughout history and other things.

  111. But the kingdom of God, not our democracy, is a monarchy.

  112. But not even just a monarchy, but an absolute monarchy, where he rules over all things.

  113. And we would have reason to fear if he was an unjust and harsh and not a good God.

  114. But he's perfect in all his ways.

  115. So regardless of those who are in governing positions today and in the past,

  116. God has used them for his own purposes to play right into what his ultimate plan is.

  117. Both good and evil governments.

  118. And there's a verse in Proverbs 21 that you can just write down if you don't want to turn there.

  119. Proverbs 21, verse 1.

    Proverbs 21:1

  120. It says,

  121. The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord.

  122. And he turns it wherever he will.

  123. This idea that God even can control the kings of the earth to accomplish what he wants.

  124. So, but here's what we see in Scripture.

  125. God can grant good authorities as a blessing to people.

  126. But he also can grant and allow evil wars to be over people as a means of judgment.

  127. And an example of this is when both Israel and Judah, the northern, southern kingdoms that were split,

  128. were in rebellion against God and had a lot of sinful things going on.

  129. And God constantly kept calling them back to repentance.

  130. It's like, repent, come back, do not do this, or I'll have to judge you.

  131. And they continued to resist God.

  132. And so eventually God sent prophets to them.

  133. One of them he sent was Amos.

  134. Turn to Amos chapter 2.

    Amos 2 chapter mention

  135. I only have a few places for you to look this morning.

  136. But look at Amos chapter 2.

    Amos 2 chapter mention

  137. But God called out Israel and Judah for a lot of things.

  138. Social injustice, corruption like in the judicial system kind of thing,

  139. gluttonous living, and religious hypocrisy.

  140. It sounds a lot like where our country could be going in a lot of ways.

  141. And in a lot of ways it's already arrived.

  142. So this is what happened.

  143. God sent Amos to the northern kingdom of Israel to call them back

  144. and basically to say God's done with you guys.

  145. Like he's had it.

  146. Like you guys have been in rebellion for far too long

  147. and you've ignored all his calls to repent.

  148. And this is what he says.

  149. Look at verse 4, chapter 2.

  150. Thus says the Lord,

  151. For three transgressions of Judah and for four,

  152. I will not revoke the punishment

  153. because they have rejected the law of the Lord

  154. and have not kept the statues,

  155. but their lives have led them astray,

  156. those after which their fathers walked.

  157. So I will send fire upon Judah

  158. and devour the strongholds of Jerusalem.

  159. And this is God saying,

  160. my response to this is going to be judgment, discipline.

  161. And flip over to chapter 3 real fast in Amos.

  162. I'll read just one verse out of this.

  163. But we have to understand that this is the same God who's alive and at work today.

  164. The God of the Old Testament was not a different God than we have today.

  165. And when some calamity happens,

  166. regardless of whatever it is,

  167. when some tragedy happens in the government or in a nation,

  168. it's not just randomly happening.

  169. God is at work.

  170. He is the one who's allowing things to happen

  171. and bringing them about himself as a means to call people to repentance,

  172. to show them that their life is fleeting

  173. and they need to repent and believe the gospel,

  174. which was Jesus' response to what people asked him in the gospels.

  175. So look at verse,

  176. sorry, look at verse 6,

  177. I believe.

  178. Yeah, verse 6.

  179. It says,

  180. Is a trumpet blown in a city and the people were not afraid?

  181. Does disaster come to a city unless the Lord has done it?

  182. You know,

  183. and so we see that God even judges nations

  184. by allowing them to be ruled over wicked men.

  185. And in this case, it was Assyria.

  186. God had like protected Israel from Assyria

  187. and like said, you know,

  188. come back to me, repent.

  189. And they refused.

  190. It was like blatantly refused them,

  191. but acted like they still belonged to them,

  192. like gave God a lot of lip service,

  193. but their hearts were far from him.

  194. So what he did to judge them and to discipline them

  195. was to remove his hand of protection

  196. and to allow Assyria to pretty much destroy

  197. the northern kingdom of Israel.

  198. And so that's just an example,

  199. a example of how God uses even evil men

  200. to accomplish his purpose.

  201. And so that's sub-point number one

  202. is that government is under divine decree.

  203. So the second sub-point

  204. is that government is a restraint

  205. on the depravity of man

  206. or the sinfulness of man.

  207. Government is a divine restraint

  208. on the depravity of man.

  209. I'm going to go back to Romans 13 again.

  210. Back to Romans 13,

  211. look at verse 2.

  212. It says,

  213. Therefore, whoever resists the authorities

  214. resists what God has appointed,

  215. and those who resist will incur judgment.

  216. For the rulers are not a terror to good conduct,

  217. but to bad.

  218. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority?

  219. And then jump over to verse 4,

  220. the second part of verse 4.

  221. But if you do wrong,

  222. be afraid,

  223. for he does not bear the sword in vain,

  224. for he is a servant of God,

  225. an avenger,

  226. who carries out God's wrath

  227. on the wrongdoer.

  228. So we've got to understand that,

  229. you know,

  230. if there's anything

  231. that really is,

  232. that we don't really need to prove

  233. or really search for much evidence,

  234. it's so funny that,

  235. like when you're sharing the gospel

  236. with somebody,

  237. that, like they often have a hard time

  238. understanding this,

  239. when there's so much evidence of this

  240. surrounding us every day.

  241. But we don't need a lot of evidence

  242. to prove that

  243. we live in like a very

  244. corrupt world,

  245. very fallen,

  246. very broken,

  247. very sinful world.

  248. And

  249. government is a divine restraint

  250. against the sinfulness of man.

  251. Martin Luther said,

  252. government is a sign

  253. of divine grace,

  254. of the mercy of God,

  255. who has no pleasure

  256. in murdering,

  257. killing,

  258. and strangling.

  259. If God left all things

  260. to which they would,

  261. as he has among other nations

  262. without good government,

  263. we should quickly dispatch

  264. one another

  265. out of this world.

  266. And

  267. remember that government

  268. was not an institution

  269. in the pre-fall

  270. sinless world.

  271. You know that?

  272. Like you remember

  273. the story.

  274. There was no need for it.

  275. If man

  276. was inherently good,

  277. selfless,

  278. humble,

  279. always seeking the good

  280. of his fellow man,

  281. we wouldn't really

  282. need much government

  283. at all.

  284. But

  285. this is not the case.

  286. Humans are not that way.

  287. We're all the exact opposite.

  288. We're

  289. we have

  290. original sin,

  291. we are selfish,

  292. and we always

  293. look out for number one.

  294. And

  295. that's not

  296. a

  297. good combination

  298. for people living

  299. in harmony

  300. with one another.

  301. So

  302. government is

  303. a restraint

  304. on the rebellion

  305. of man.

  306. And

  307. without which

  308. we would have

  309. no peace,

  310. no stability,

  311. chaos,

  312. anarchy

  313. would pretty much

  314. rule.

  315. And we can see that

  316. in different nations

  317. throughout the world

  318. where there's no

  319. real stable government

  320. and how people

  321. just kind of do

  322. whatever they want

  323. and no one's

  324. safe,

  325. there's no peace

  326. and protection

  327. for people at all.

  328. And even

  329. little moments,

  330. little windows,

  331. places that we can

  332. look in

  333. in our own country

  334. when we see

  335. like a national,

  336. like a disaster

  337. hit,

  338. like Katrina,

  339. and they would say

  340. that so many people

  341. were just running

  342. around rampant,

  343. stealing things,

  344. shooting at

  345. helicopters flying by,

  346. where there's not

  347. like a lot of

  348. law enforcement.

  349. People left

  350. to their own

  351. devices will always

  352. go the other way.

  353. And chaos

  354. and anarchy

  355. would be the result.

  356. And as someone

  357. who really loves

  358. to study empires

  359. of the past,

  360. like I can tell you

  361. like that's just true,

  362. like it's the same

  363. story over and over.

  364. And so,

  365. you might not agree

  366. with this,

  367. it could be argued

  368. that an imperfect

  369. order is better

  370. than no order

  371. at all

  372. in a lot of

  373. situations.

  374. But government

  375. is a mercy

  376. from God

  377. to keep order

  378. and to rule

  379. over the

  380. sinfulness of man.

  381. I have a,

  382. I started trying

  383. to paraphrase this

  384. in my own words,

  385. but as when you're

  386. writing a paper,

  387. if you really can't

  388. do that that well,

  389. you should just

  390. state what's there.

  391. And this is just

  392. a quote by a guy

  393. named Robert Hadlin

  394. on government.

  395. He said,

  396. the institution

  397. of civil government

  398. is a dispensation

  399. of mercy.

  400. And it exists

  401. and its existence

  402. is so indispensable

  403. that the moment

  404. it sees under one

  405. form,

  406. it reestablishes

  407. itself in another.

  408. The world,

  409. ever since the fall,

  410. when the dominion

  411. of one part

  412. of the human race

  413. was over another,

  414. immediately introduced,

  415. that's in Genesis 3,

  416. if you want to know

  417. Genesis 3,

  418. 16,

  419. has been in such

  420. a state of corruption

  421. and depravity

  422. that without

  423. the powerful obstacle

  424. presented by government

  425. to the selfish passions

  426. of men,

  427. it would be better

  428. to live among

  429. the beasts of the forest

  430. than in human society.

  431. So he's saying

  432. like in a pre-fall condition,

  433. without government,

  434. we might as well

  435. go out and live

  436. in the woods.

  437. Some of us

  438. would rather do that anyway.

  439. But it says,

  440. as soon as its restraints

  441. are removed,

  442. man shows himself

  443. in his real character

  444. when there was

  445. no king in Israel

  446. and every man did

  447. what was right

  448. in his own eyes.

  449. We see the last

  450. three chapters

  451. of the book of Judges

  452. which were

  453. the dreadful consequences

  454. when everyone just did

  455. what was right

  456. in their own eyes

  457. and there was no ruler

  458. over them.

  459. So,

  460. and as it says

  461. in our text,

  462. back in Romans,

  463. it says that they

  464. wield the power

  465. of the sword.

  466. What does that mean?

  467. It means they have

  468. weapons.

  469. It means that

  470. they have,

  471. if you take away

  472. the sword

  473. from the government,

  474. they don't have

  475. any authority

  476. at all.

  477. They can't make you

  478. do anything.

  479. They can't control

  480. sinful men

  481. or protect

  482. those who are

  483. law-abiding citizens

  484. without the sword.

  485. And so,

  486. going on,

  487. like,

  488. it says that the

  489. governing authorities

  490. are God's servants

  491. carrying out

  492. his judgment

  493. and his wrath

  494. against the evil

  495. actions of man.

  496. and if we look

  497. on and,

  498. no,

  499. don't turn here,

  500. but I was going

  501. to say,

  502. I'll read this to you

  503. from 1 Peter

    1 Peter 4:15

  504. chapter 4,

  505. verse 15.

  506. Let no one

  507. suffer as a murderer

  508. trouble with the government.

  509. Let it be for something

  510. righteous,

  511. not for doing evil,

  512. not for,

  513. like,

  514. attacking,

  515. trying to rebel

  516. against the government

  517. in some sinful way.

  518. He's like,

  519. don't be in trouble

  520. by that,

  521. but a major difference

  522. between Romans

  523. and 1 Peter

  524. is that when the book

  525. of Romans was written

  526. historically,

  527. the persecution

  528. from the empire

  529. had not really

  530. started yet,

  531. officially,

  532. and it came

  533. probably the second time

  534. Paul came to Rome

  535. and,

  536. but around 1 Peter

  537. it was already happening,

  538. so Peter's like saying,

  539. in these cases,

  540. you know,

  541. do not suffer

  542. for doing evil,

  543. like,

  544. if you're going to suffer,

  545. suffer for the cause

  546. of Christ,

  547. in the name of Christ,

  548. for loving people

  549. and for laying down

  550. your life for people,

  551. like,

  552. suffer in that way,

  553. so,

  554. you know,

  555. we don't really,

  556. like I said,

  557. this isn't going to be

  558. a situational ethics

  559. mourning,

  560. but,

  561. but also,

  562. the power of the sword

  563. refers to war,

  564. the state has a right

  565. to defend itself,

  566. but also refers to

  567. the idea of capital punishment,

  568. which you can read about

  569. in Genesis 9,

  570. 5 through 6,

  571. if you want a basis

  572. for why God commands that,

  573. and it's a large deterrent

  574. for people to do evil,

  575. it doesn't deter everybody,

  576. but it is a deterrent,

  577. and in the,

  578. the means of exercising

  579. that authority

  580. are important,

  581. and even though

  582. sometimes innocent people

  583. suffer,

  584. and may be falsely accused,

  585. the overall institution

  586. is more important

  587. than,

  588. than doing away with it,

  589. and so we look at,

  590. that'll bring us

  591. to the next thing,

  592. which these kind of

  593. go hand in hand,

  594. but government resists

  595. to,

  596. to keep in check

  597. the sinful actions

  598. of man,

  599. but also on the other hand,

  600. this is the last sub point

  601. under this question,

  602. government

  603. is a divine means

  604. to promote good,

  605. if you look at

  606. verses 3 and 4

  607. back in Romans 13,

  608. for the rulers

  609. are not a terror

  610. to good conduct,

  611. but to bad,

  612. would you have no fear

  613. of the one

  614. who is in authority,

  615. then do what is good,

  616. and you will receive

  617. his approval,

  618. for he is God's servant

  619. for your good,

  620. that's what he,

  621. what he says,

  622. so as a general rule,

  623. as a general rule,

  624. the peaceful,

  625. law-abiding citizen

  626. should have no reason

  627. to fear the government,

  628. and it exists

  629. as the deterrent

  630. for evil

  631. and the promotion

  632. of what is good,

  633. seeking,

  634. seeking the good of,

  635. and welfare

  636. of that nation

  637. is what a government

  638. exists for,

  639. it doesn't always do that,

  640. but it does

  641. in a large way,

  642. and like we got

  643. to remember that

  644. no government system

  645. is going to be perfect

  646. because it's made up

  647. of sinful men,

  648. and just like the church

  649. is not perfect

  650. because though we are

  651. born again,

  652. we still sin,

  653. we're made up of people

  654. that have a lot

  655. of issues,

  656. and so,

  657. but we would have,

  658. I'll read you

  659. this little statement

  660. that I think sums up

  661. these two points

  662. in the old

  663. Westminster confession

  664. from the 1600s,

  665. God,

  666. the supreme

  667. Lord and King

  668. of all the world,

  669. has ordained

  670. civil magistrates

  671. to be under him

  672. over the people

  673. for his own glory

  674. and the public good,

  675. and to this end

  676. he has armed them

  677. with the power

  678. of the sword

  679. for the defense

  680. and the encouragement

  681. of them that are good

  682. and for the punishment

  683. of those who do evil.

  684. So,

  685. they're to uphold justice,

  686. they're to seek

  687. the welfare

  688. of their nation,

  689. of their people,

  690. and if they

  691. abuse that authority,

  692. God is very clear

  693. that he will hold

  694. them accountable

  695. for that

  696. and that he will judge

  697. them if they abuse

  698. that authority,

  699. and that's why

  700. we see,

  701. like,

  702. why nations

  703. have destroyed

  704. other nations,

  705. you know,

  706. like,

  707. though God

  708. used Assyria

  709. to punish Israel

  710. and to punish Judah,

  711. like,

  712. eventually,

  713. I mean,

  714. it seems like,

  715. well,

  716. God is on the side

  717. of the Assyrians,

  718. right?

  719. No,

  720. because eventually

  721. God judged the Assyrians

  722. with the Babylonians

  723. and the Babylonians

  724. with the Persians

  725. and the Persians

  726. with the Greeks

  727. and so forth,

  728. so God always

  729. is going to punish

  730. the men in government

  731. who use their power

  732. for evil,

  733. always.

  734. He's going to hold

  735. them accountable

  736. for that.

  737. So,

  738. this brings us

  739. to the second question,

  740. the other half

  741. of this,

  742. is,

  743. how can we glorify

  744. God

  745. in our government

  746. as believers?

  747. How can we glorify

  748. God

  749. in our government?

  750. And this is verses

  751. 5 through 7

  752. in Romans.

  753. Therefore,

  754. one must be

  755. in subjection,

  756. not only

  757. to avoid

  758. God's wrath,

  759. but also

  760. for the sake

  761. of conscience.

  762. For because of this,

  763. you also pay taxes,

  764. for the authorities

  765. are ministers

  766. of God

  767. attending

  768. to this very thing.

  769. Pay to all

  770. what is owed

  771. to them,

  772. taxes to whom

  773. taxes are owed,

  774. revenue to whom

  775. revenue is owed,

  776. respect to whom

  777. respect is owed,

  778. and honor to him

  779. honor is owed.

  780. So,

  781. he tells us

  782. in this context

  783. how we should

  784. relate to the government,

  785. and this would have

  786. been a big question

  787. to the church

  788. in Rome.

  789. How do we,

  790. because they had

  791. like the Roman

  792. government

  793. in their faith.

  794. They had the senate

  795. that was there,

  796. they had the

  797. Palatine Hill

  798. where the emperor

  799. lived,

  800. and all these things.

  801. They had to learn

  802. how do we,

  803. how do we actually

  804. act within this

  805. context

  806. in regard

  807. to our rulers,

  808. and so

  809. the practical

  810. outworking of it,

  811. and this is

  812. sub-point number one.

  813. Humbly submit

  814. to the government.

  815. Citizens

  816. that are

  817. under civil law

  818. are to be

  819. in submission

  820. to their authorities,

  821. even as

  822. believers.

  823. In the midst

  824. of a lot

  825. of people

  826. under governments

  827. who are

  828. slandering the

  829. government

  830. and like

  831. attacking the

  832. government,

  833. we're to place

  834. ourselves in

  835. humble submission

  836. to the government.

  837. And it's a

  838. military term

  839. there,

  840. subjection,

  841. to place

  842. yourself

  843. underneath the

  844. command of

  845. someone who

  846. has a higher

  847. rank than you

  848. and to do

  849. what they say

  850. and to do it

  851. willingly.

  852. It kind of

  853. carries a picture

  854. of like a

  855. willingness,

  856. not being

  857. forced to.

  858. Because Paul

  859. also says

  860. in verse 5

  861. there,

  862. do it for

  863. the sake

  864. of conscience.

  865. So if you

  866. are in direct

  867. rebellion against

  868. the government,

  869. your conscience

  870. will condemn

  871. you.

  872. And it's

  873. because

  874. it's clearly

  875. a command of

  876. God that

  877. you're not

  878. to do that.

  879. And so

  880. I'll read you

  881. from Titus

    Titus 3 chapter mention

  882. chapter 3,

  883. or Titus 3,

  884. chapter 3,

  885. says,

  886. remind them

  887. to be submissive

  888. to the rulers

  889. and authorities,

  890. to be obedient,

  891. to be ready

  892. for every good

  893. work,

  894. to speak evil

  895. of no one,

  896. to avoid

  897. quarreling,

  898. to be gentle,

  899. and to show

  900. perfect courtesy

  901. towards all

  902. people.

  903. So,

  904. this is

  905. not

  906. like debatable.

  907. Like God

  908. says,

  909. be humbly

  910. submitted to

  911. your authorities.

  912. So then the

  913. question will

  914. arise,

  915. is there ever

  916. a time that

  917. we don't

  918. obey the

  919. authorities?

  920. Like,

  921. what if they're

  922. asking us to

  923. do something

  924. that's like

  925. really evil,

  926. really simple?

  927. What do we

  928. do?

  929. Well,

  930. that doesn't

  931. always play out

  932. really pretty,

  933. but here's

  934. the deal.

  935. We obey

  936. the laws

  937. and commandments

  938. of our

  939. authorities

  940. as long as

  941. they are not

  942. in direct

  943. opposition to

  944. God's commands

  945. and God's

  946. laws.

  947. And we

  948. should refuse,

  949. in fact,

  950. to submit

  951. to anything

  952. that would

  953. cause us to

  954. sin against

  955. God and

  956. breaking His

  957. commandments.

  958. I'll give you

  959. three examples

  960. of this.

  961. One was

  962. in Exodus,

  963. the Hebrew

  964. midwives who

  965. were told to

  966. make sure that

  967. the male

  968. children were

  969. killed.

  970. It says this,

  971. it says the

  972. midwives,

  973. well,

  974. I mean,

  975. back up,

  976. Pharaoh commanded

  977. them to do

  978. this.

  979. So their

  980. governing authority

  981. commanded the

  982. midwives to

  983. like play

  984. into the

  985. scheme to

  986. kill all

  987. the male

  988. children.

  989. It says,

  990. but the

  991. midwives feared

  992. God and

  993. did not do

  994. as the

  995. king of

  996. Egypt

  997. commanded,

  998. but let

  999. the male

  1000. children live.

  1001. That's

  1002. Exodus 1,

  1003. 15-17.

  1004. Another

  1005. example is

  1006. Shadrach,

  1007. Meshach,

  1008. Abednego,

  1009. or you

  1010. want their

  1011. Hebrew names,

  1012. which are

  1013. much cooler.

  1014. Hananiah,

  1015. Mishael,

  1016. Azariah,

  1017. who were

  1018. exiles in

  1019. Babylon,

  1020. and they

  1021. convinced the

  1022. king,

  1023. Nebuchadnezzar,

  1024. to build

  1025. this big

  1026. statue of

  1027. himself.

  1028. His guys

  1029. convinced him

  1030. to do that.

  1031. And when the

  1032. music sounded,

  1033. you were to

  1034. bow down and

  1035. worship this

  1036. statue of the

  1037. king of

  1038. Babylon,

  1039. of Nebuchadnezzar,

  1040. and to

  1041. give your

  1042. worship and

  1043. your homage

  1044. to him.

  1045. So,

  1046. very symbolic,

  1047. yes.

  1048. A really

  1049. hard place,

  1050. but they

  1051. refused to

  1052. bow down

  1053. to that

  1054. image because

  1055. it was

  1056. idolatry.

  1057. It was

  1058. turning their

  1059. back on the

  1060. true and

  1061. living God.

  1062. That's found

  1063. in Daniel 3,

  1064. 15-18.

  1065. Great story

  1066. there.

  1067. God ends

  1068. up delivering

  1069. them,

  1070. but they

  1071. just openly

  1072. defied Nebuchadnezzar,

  1073. but they

  1074. did it in

  1075. a very

  1076. humble way.

  1077. They did

  1078. it like,

  1079. we love

  1080. you,

  1081. but we're

  1082. not going

  1083. to do

  1084. that kind

  1085. of thing.

  1086. And a guy

  1087. ended up

  1088. delivering them

  1089. from the

  1090. hands of

  1091. Nebuchadnezzar.

  1092. But turn to

  1093. Acts 5 real

  1094. fast.

  1095. Acts 5,

    Acts 5:27

  1096. verse 27.

  1097. Acts 5,

    Acts 5:27

  1098. verse 27.

  1099. A third

  1100. example.

  1101. Acts 5,

    Acts 5:27

  1102. verse 27.

  1103. And this

  1104. is when

  1105. Peter and

  1106. the apostles

  1107. were taken

  1108. before the

  1109. Jewish council

  1110. to be judged

  1111. for preaching

  1112. the gospel,

  1113. for telling

  1114. people about

  1115. Christ.

  1116. It says,

  1117. when they

  1118. had brought

  1119. them,

  1120. they stood

  1121. them before

  1122. the council.

  1123. The high

  1124. priest questioned

  1125. them,

  1126. saying,

  1127. we gave

  1128. you strict

  1129. orders not

  1130. to continue

  1131. teaching in

  1132. this name,

  1133. and yet

  1134. you have

  1135. filled

  1136. Jerusalem

  1137. with your

  1138. teaching,

  1139. intended to

  1140. bring this

  1141. man's blood

  1142. upon us.

  1143. Okay,

  1144. so we

  1145. told you

  1146. to shut

  1147. your mouth,

  1148. and you're

  1149. not shutting

  1150. your mouth

  1151. about Jesus.

  1152. Their

  1153. response,

  1154. but Peter

  1155. and the

  1156. other apostles

  1157. answered,

  1158. we must

  1159. obey God

  1160. rather than

  1161. men.

  1162. So,

  1163. ultimately,

  1164. our ultimate

  1165. citizenship

  1166. and our

  1167. ultimate kingdom

  1168. is the

  1169. kingdom of

  1170. God.

  1171. And as we

  1172. read earlier,

  1173. even he

  1174. rules over

  1175. the nations

  1176. and governments

  1177. of men,

  1178. even he does.

  1179. So,

  1180. which one

  1181. are we

  1182. going to

  1183. submit to?

  1184. Always the

  1185. law of

  1186. God,

  1187. as long

  1188. as it's

  1189. not in

  1190. contradiction

  1191. to what

  1192. the laws

  1193. of man

  1194. would say.

  1195. that's the

  1196. sub-point

  1197. number one,

  1198. humbly

  1199. submit to

  1200. the government.

  1201. And,

  1202. sub-point

  1203. number two,

  1204. back in our

  1205. text in

  1206. Romans,

  1207. pay taxes,

  1208. right?

  1209. For it

  1210. says,

  1211. for because of

  1212. this you pay

  1213. taxes for the

  1214. authorities or

  1215. ministers of

  1216. God,

  1217. attending to

  1218. this very

  1219. good.

  1220. And it

  1221. says to

  1222. give taxes

  1223. to them,

  1224. taxes to

  1225. their own,

  1226. honor to

  1227. honor his

  1228. own,

  1229. so forth.

  1230. And so,

  1231. we're

  1232. commanded in

  1233. scripture to

  1234. pay taxes to

  1235. our government.

  1236. And God

  1237. will hold

  1238. them accountable

  1239. again and

  1240. judge them

  1241. for how

  1242. they're using

  1243. that money.

  1244. If they're

  1245. doing it in

  1246. a sinful,

  1247. unlawful

  1248. way,

  1249. God will,

  1250. what goes

  1251. around comes

  1252. around.

  1253. They'll get

  1254. what's coming

  1255. to them if

  1256. they're abusing

  1257. that authority.

  1258. And so,

  1259. just because we

  1260. disagree with

  1261. the way that

  1262. some taxes are

  1263. being spent or

  1264. whatever,

  1265. it doesn't give

  1266. us the right to

  1267. refuse to pay

  1268. taxes.

  1269. Consider the

  1270. context in which

  1271. Romans is

  1272. written.

  1273. You know,

  1274. the Christians

  1275. there are

  1276. taxing so

  1277. Caesar can

  1278. throw people in

  1279. the amphitheaters

  1280. and watch them

  1281. die,

  1282. and paying

  1283. taxes so

  1284. Caesar can go

  1285. and conquer

  1286. more lands

  1287. for Rome.

  1288. So,

  1289. we see that.

  1290. Can you

  1291. imagine what

  1292. it would have

  1293. been like living

  1294. under the

  1295. Assyrians or

  1296. Babylonians?

  1297. If we think

  1298. our government

  1299. is bad,

  1300. like,

  1301. man,

  1302. just go and

  1303. read a little

  1304. bit,

  1305. read a book.

  1306. I'll recommend

  1307. some good history

  1308. books for you.

  1309. But,

  1310. like,

  1311. paying taxes

  1312. under those

  1313. empires,

  1314. far more

  1315. terrifying.

  1316. Far more

  1317. terrifying.

  1318. So,

  1319. if you don't

  1320. believe me,

  1321. let's just ask

  1322. Jesus himself,

  1323. so,

  1324. those of you

  1325. who have a

  1326. skewed view

  1327. of how to

  1328. read scripture

  1329. sometimes,

  1330. like,

  1331. Paul said

  1332. this,

  1333. but Jesus

  1334. said this,

  1335. kind of thing,

  1336. they say the

  1337. same things.

  1338. I'll read

  1339. something right

  1340. out of the

  1341. mouth of

  1342. Jesus.

  1343. They ask

  1344. him,

  1345. is it

  1346. unlawful to

  1347. pay taxes

  1348. to Caesar?

  1349. And,

  1350. he understands

  1351. that they're

  1352. trying to test

  1353. him and

  1354. cause them

  1355. hypocrites.

  1356. And then he

  1357. says,

  1358. throw me a

  1359. coin,

  1360. so they

  1361. give him

  1362. a denarii,

  1363. and he

  1364. says,

  1365. he says

  1366. on there,

  1367. like,

  1368. whose likeness

  1369. inscription is

  1370. on this

  1371. coin,

  1372. and they

  1373. say Caesar's,

  1374. then he

  1375. says,

  1376. alright,

  1377. then render

  1378. to Caesar

  1379. the things

  1380. that are

  1381. Caesar's,

  1382. and to

  1383. God the

  1384. things that

  1385. are God's.

  1386. Pay your

  1387. taxes to

  1388. Caesar,

  1389. and what's

  1390. owed to

  1391. God,

  1392. give to

  1393. God.

  1394. And so

  1395. Jesus himself

  1396. says to

  1397. submit in

  1398. the government

  1399. that way.

  1400. sub-point

  1401. number three

  1402. is,

  1403. use your

  1404. freedoms to

  1405. do good.

  1406. Use your

  1407. freedoms to

  1408. do good.

  1409. we live

  1410. in a

  1411. nation

  1412. where,

  1413. unlike any

  1414. other in

  1415. history,

  1416. we have

  1417. so many

  1418. rights that

  1419. have been

  1420. granted to

  1421. us by

  1422. government

  1423. and freedoms

  1424. that we

  1425. can operate

  1426. within.

  1427. So,

  1428. Christians should

  1429. seek the

  1430. good of

  1431. their nation

  1432. by operating

  1433. within their

  1434. legal boundaries

  1435. as citizens

  1436. granted to

  1437. them by the

  1438. government.

  1439. So,

  1440. we even see

  1441. this by

  1442. Paul.

  1443. He exercised

  1444. his rights

  1445. in a context

  1446. as a Roman

  1447. citizen in

  1448. many,

  1449. many different

  1450. cases.

  1451. He would

  1452. say,

  1453. hey,

  1454. I'm a

  1455. Roman

  1456. citizen,

  1457. the law

  1458. says this.

  1459. And they

  1460. would be

  1461. like,

  1462. you're right.

  1463. And they

  1464. would always

  1465. be used

  1466. for good.

  1467. And also,

  1468. to vote.

  1469. Like,

  1470. we've been

  1471. given a

  1472. chance to

  1473. vote against

  1474. things that

  1475. are evil

  1476. and vote

  1477. for things

  1478. that are

  1479. good.

  1480. Sometimes

  1481. there's,

  1482. it's the

  1483. less of two

  1484. evils in

  1485. some situations.

  1486. And I leave

  1487. that up to

  1488. your conscience

  1489. whether you

  1490. decide to

  1491. vote on

  1492. things like

  1493. that or not.

  1494. But,

  1495. at the end

  1496. of the day,

  1497. we have

  1498. the ability

  1499. to have

  1500. some influence

  1501. on our

  1502. government.

  1503. And also

  1504. the ability

  1505. to speak

  1506. out against

  1507. things that

  1508. are sinful

  1509. and unrighteous.

  1510. And,

  1511. but,

  1512. here's,

  1513. I don't want

  1514. to give you

  1515. a bad

  1516. impression.

  1517. I think

  1518. the way

  1519. that we're

  1520. going to

  1521. change the

  1522. nation as

  1523. believers

  1524. is not by

  1525. getting,

  1526. going and

  1527. picketing,

  1528. you know,

  1529. like,

  1530. no more,

  1531. whatever,

  1532. rah,

  1533. rah,

  1534. rah,

  1535. rah,

  1536. I don't

  1537. really think

  1538. that's going

  1539. to change

  1540. anything.

  1541. But,

  1542. there's ways

  1543. that we

  1544. can fight

  1545. for righteous

  1546. causes.

  1547. And we

  1548. have to

  1549. understand that

  1550. even when we

  1551. speak out

  1552. against things,

  1553. we have to

  1554. do it with

  1555. humility and

  1556. gentleness,

  1557. not,

  1558. you guys are

  1559. evil and,

  1560. you know,

  1561. whatever.

  1562. It's not a

  1563. picture of that.

  1564. And an

  1565. example,

  1566. I don't have

  1567. time to get

  1568. into this,

  1569. would be like

  1570. William

  1571. Wilberforce

  1572. in the

  1573. 19th century

  1574. when he

  1575. was a

  1576. British MP

  1577. in the

  1578. House of

  1579. Commons and

  1580. God used

  1581. him at

  1582. times almost

  1583. single-handedly

  1584. over a huge

  1585. period of

  1586. time to

  1587. bring down

  1588. the slave

  1589. trade in

  1590. the British

  1591. Empire.

  1592. And even

  1593. when he was

  1594. in Parliament

  1595. arguing with

  1596. the other

  1597. guys in there

  1598. about slavery,

  1599. he had like

  1600. such a kind

  1601. and humble

  1602. spirit as he

  1603. did it.

  1604. He never

  1605. attacked them

  1606. personally.

  1607. They attacked

  1608. him personally

  1609. a lot.

  1610. And it's

  1611. just amazing

  1612. to go back

  1613. and read

  1614. how he

  1615. dealt with

  1616. those situations

  1617. in a way

  1618. that glorified

  1619. Christ.

  1620. And God

  1621. used him to

  1622. destroy slavery

  1623. in the British

  1624. Empire.

  1625. Eventually that

  1626. would spill

  1627. over into

  1628. America again

  1629. many years

  1630. later.

  1631. An example

  1632. of that today

  1633. is abortion.

  1634. We've been

  1635. talking about

  1636. that a lot

  1637. at Christ's

  1638. Family to

  1639. stand up for

  1640. the unborn.

  1641. So in all

  1642. these things,

  1643. we're to use

  1644. our freedoms

  1645. to do good,

  1646. but not

  1647. boast about

  1648. our freedoms

  1649. like we're

  1650. free and

  1651. we have a

  1652. right to be

  1653. a pain in

  1654. the neck.

  1655. No we're

  1656. not.

  1657. We have

  1658. freedom to

  1659. influence our

  1660. government and

  1661. our nation in

  1662. a humble way.

  1663. And to speak

  1664. about those

  1665. things with

  1666. them, to go

  1667. to our

  1668. congressmen, to

  1669. our senators,

  1670. whatever, and

  1671. try to influence

  1672. them for good.

  1673. So another

  1674. sub-point

  1675. underneath this

  1676. is to pray

  1677. for the

  1678. government.

  1679. Pray for

  1680. the government.

  1681. So instead

  1682. of slandering

  1683. and speaking

  1684. out against

  1685. and hatred

  1686. towards our

  1687. leaders, we're

  1688. to pray for

  1689. them.

  1690. That's what

  1691. the command

  1692. is.

  1693. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 2:1

  1694. chapter 2

  1695. verse 1.

  1696. First of

  1697. all, then I

  1698. urge you that

  1699. supplications

  1700. and prayers,

  1701. intercessions,

  1702. and thanksgiving

  1703. be made for

  1704. all people.

  1705. So pray for

  1706. these people.

  1707. It says for

  1708. kings,

  1709. and all

  1710. those who

  1711. are in

  1712. high positions,

  1713. that they

  1714. may lead a

  1715. peaceful and

  1716. quiet life,

  1717. godly and

  1718. dignified in

  1719. every way.

  1720. That's 1

  1721. Timothy 2,

  1722. 1 through

  1723. 2.

  1724. So the

  1725. last point

  1726. here, the

  1727. last sub-point,

  1728. I think is

  1729. probably the

  1730. greatest influence

  1731. we can have

  1732. on the

  1733. government,

  1734. have on our

  1735. nation,

  1736. preaching the

  1737. gospel.

  1738. This is it,

  1739. preaching the

  1740. gospel.

  1741. realize that

  1742. the gospel is

  1743. what changes

  1744. societies.

  1745. The gospel is

  1746. what changes

  1747. societies,

  1748. always has.

  1749. Let me give you

  1750. an example.

  1751. When Christ

  1752. came into

  1753. the world,

  1754. he came into

  1755. a very, you

  1756. know, broken,

  1757. sinful world,

  1758. just like we

  1759. did.

  1760. Rome was the

  1761. existing ruler

  1762. and authority,

  1763. and slavery

  1764. was going on,

  1765. you know,

  1766. obviously,

  1767. in the Roman

  1768. Empire in a

  1769. legal way.

  1770. So all these

  1771. things, all

  1772. these things

  1773. that existed

  1774. when Christ

  1775. came into

  1776. this sinful

  1777. world,

  1778. what did he

  1779. do?

  1780. Did he, like,

  1781. take up a

  1782. picket sign

  1783. and start,

  1784. like, charging,

  1785. you know,

  1786. the Senate and

  1787. saying, you

  1788. know, hey,

  1789. stop slavery,

  1790. hey, you

  1791. know, like,

  1792. this needs to

  1793. stop these

  1794. unjust things

  1795. that you're

  1796. doing?

  1797. No.

  1798. But what

  1799. did he do?

  1800. He submitted

  1801. to all the

  1802. institutions,

  1803. even to the

  1804. Mosaic Law,

  1805. because at

  1806. that time,

  1807. the fullness

  1808. of it had not

  1809. come.

  1810. Like, he

  1811. hadn't died,

  1812. he hasn't

  1813. resurrected yet,

  1814. so he even

  1815. submitted himself

  1816. to that,

  1817. to the Roman

  1818. government,

  1819. political,

  1820. economic systems.

  1821. He submitted

  1822. to that,

  1823. but here's the

  1824. deal.

  1825. He stayed

  1826. focused on

  1827. his mission

  1828. while he was

  1829. here,

  1830. and his

  1831. mission was

  1832. not to

  1833. overturn

  1834. the Roman

  1835. government.

  1836. It took

  1837. his disciples

  1838. forever to

  1839. figure that

  1840. out, like,

  1841. not why I'm

  1842. here, guys.

  1843. And so,

  1844. so what if

  1845. the government

  1846. was replaced?

  1847. Okay?

  1848. We learn from

  1849. history that

  1850. if a bad

  1851. system can be

  1852. overturned or

  1853. overruled,

  1854. it usually can

  1855. be replaced

  1856. with another

  1857. bad system

  1858. right after

  1859. that.

  1860. So, is

  1861. that really

  1862. the answer

  1863. to the

  1864. problem?

  1865. No.

  1866. So, Christ

  1867. came to

  1868. focus on a

  1869. much bigger

  1870. problem,

  1871. on the

  1872. spiritual

  1873. bondage

  1874. of man,

  1875. to focus

  1876. on the

  1877. sinfulness

  1878. of man,

  1879. and he

  1880. understood

  1881. that the

  1882. power of

  1883. the gospel

  1884. changes people

  1885. from the

  1886. inside out,

  1887. and he

  1888. understood

  1889. that if

  1890. he could

  1891. work in

  1892. their hearts

  1893. and their

  1894. minds,

  1895. the sinful

  1896. systems of

  1897. men would

  1898. be destroyed.

  1899. Well, like,

  1900. renewed hearts

  1901. that love

  1902. God and want

  1903. to worship

  1904. God in

  1905. spirit and

  1906. truth,

  1907. the overflow

  1908. of that

  1909. would be

  1910. the destruction

  1911. of sinful

  1912. governments

  1913. and sinful

  1914. laws,

  1915. and he

  1916. knew that

  1917. the greater

  1918. included the

  1919. lesser there.

  1920. So, as

  1921. his followers,

  1922. we're to

  1923. unleash the

  1924. power of the

  1925. gospel in

  1926. all areas of

  1927. society,

  1928. wherever we

  1929. work, in

  1930. our homes,

  1931. in our

  1932. government,

  1933. whatever we

  1934. do, we're

  1935. to, like,

  1936. unleash the

  1937. power of the

  1938. gospel.

  1939. We shouldn't

  1940. expect sinful

  1941. men to, like,

  1942. always act in

  1943. accordance with

  1944. God's law.

  1945. The power of

  1946. the gospel is

  1947. the only thing

  1948. that can free

  1949. them and

  1950. actually change

  1951. those societies

  1952. is Christ.

  1953. And as

  1954. people were

  1955. changed and

  1956. they love

  1957. God, they

  1958. also will

  1959. value their

  1960. fellow man

  1961. even more as

  1962. a result of

  1963. that.

  1964. And so, we

  1965. see that, you

  1966. know, I

  1967. guess Britain is

  1968. another example

  1969. to use of

  1970. that with what

  1971. Wilberforce was

  1972. doing, okay?

  1973. He was fighting

  1974. to end the

  1975. slave trade.

  1976. There were a

  1977. lot of

  1978. people,

  1979. who were

  1980. saying we

  1981. need to

  1982. just overthrow

  1983. the government,

  1984. overthrow

  1985. parliament,

  1986. overthrow the

  1987. king.

  1988. They did it

  1989. in France,

  1990. and France

  1991. was still

  1992. going chaotic

  1993. at the time,

  1994. wasn't really

  1995. a good model

  1996. to follow.

  1997. And so,

  1998. but he refused.

  1999. He was like,

  2000. no, like,

  2001. if we're going

  2002. to change

  2003. society, we're

  2004. going to do

  2005. it, like,

  2006. in a godly,

  2007. law-abiding

  2008. way with

  2009. humble submission

  2010. to our leaders.

  2011. And it

  2012. did.

  2013. Like, it

  2014. happened.

  2015. It took time,

  2016. but that society

  2017. was changed,

  2018. and slavery was

  2019. brought down

  2020. as a result.

  2021. Turn to 1 Peter 2,

  2022. and this is where

  2023. we're going to end.

  2024. 1 Peter 2.

  2025. The gospel will

  2026. change hearts,

  2027. change minds,

  2028. and thus will

  2029. destroy the evil

  2030. actions of man.

  2031. 1 Peter 2,

    1 Peter 2:13

  2032. verse 13,

  2033. to kind of add

  2034. to what Paul

  2035. is saying,

  2036. Peter says

  2037. the same stuff

  2038. here.

  2039. Be subject

  2040. for the Lord's

  2041. sake

  2042. to every human

  2043. institution,

  2044. whether it be

  2045. to the emperor

  2046. as supreme,

  2047. or to governors

  2048. as sent by him

  2049. to punish those

  2050. who do evil,

  2051. and to the praise

  2052. of those who do

  2053. good.

  2054. For this is

  2055. the will of God,

  2056. that by doing

  2057. good you should

  2058. put to silence

  2059. the ignorance

  2060. of foolish people.

  2061. Live as people

  2062. who are free,

  2063. right?

  2064. It's us,

  2065. not using your

  2066. freedom as a

  2067. cover-up for evil,

  2068. but living as

  2069. servants of God.

  2070. Honor everyone,

  2071. love the brotherhood,

  2072. fear God,

  2073. honor the emperor.

  2074. I mean,

  2075. this is all

  2076. just very clear.

  2077. These aren't

  2078. negotiable things,

  2079. but as we draw

  2080. near to Christ

  2081. and the power

  2082. of the gospel

  2083. changes us,

  2084. the power of the

  2085. gospel changes

  2086. the lives of

  2087. people around us.

  2088. That's how

  2089. societies are

  2090. changed.

  2091. In other words,

  2092. we can't fix our

  2093. nation with a

  2094. bunch of,

  2095. at the end of

  2096. the day,

  2097. rules and laws

  2098. that are thrown

  2099. at them.

  2100. We have to

  2101. change people

  2102. for societies

  2103. to be changed

  2104. for the glory

  2105. of God.

  2106. So let me just

  2107. pray for us

  2108. and continue.

  2109. Father, I just

  2110. admit that this

  2111. is a hard

  2112. subject in

  2113. God.

  2114. I'm afraid that

  2115. even as believers

  2116. we can come

  2117. across very

  2118. simplistic and

  2119. very naive

  2120. about the

  2121. realities of a

  2122. sinful world

  2123. around us.

  2124. God, I know

  2125. that in

  2126. governments

  2127. today,

  2128. there's so

  2129. many hard

  2130. decisions that

  2131. have to be

  2132. made.

  2133. And sometimes

  2134. it really isn't

  2135. a choice of

  2136. good versus

  2137. evil.

  2138. It's almost

  2139. like what's

  2140. the lesser

  2141. of two evils.

  2142. They have

  2143. hard positions

  2144. that they are

  2145. in.

  2146. And Lord,

  2147. it's hard to

  2148. know what to

  2149. do.

  2150. So I pray

  2151. that you

  2152. would work

  2153. in them

  2154. and that

  2155. you would

  2156. work in

  2157. President Obama,

  2158. you work in

  2159. the House

  2160. and the

  2161. Senate and

  2162. the judicial

  2163. system.

  2164. Lord, I

  2165. pray that

  2166. you would

  2167. raise up

  2168. both

  2169. golly men

  2170. and women

  2171. to have

  2172. an influence

  2173. on the

  2174. government

  2175. for your

  2176. glory.

  2177. And as

  2178. citizens,

  2179. we would

  2180. glorify you

  2181. in how we

  2182. conduct our

  2183. lives under

  2184. the government

  2185. just as

  2186. law-abiding

  2187. citizens,

  2188. those who

  2189. pay taxes,

  2190. those who

  2191. don't slander

  2192. out hatred

  2193. against the

  2194. government.

  2195. But Lord,

  2196. for those who

  2197. are quick to

  2198. pray for the

  2199. government

  2200. and quick to

  2201. speak the

  2202. words of life,

  2203. the gospel to

  2204. the lost world

  2205. that surrounds

  2206. us.

  2207. And Lord,

  2208. just help us

  2209. to be humbled

  2210. by that,

  2211. that a lot

  2212. of us live

  2213. in a

  2214. simple world

  2215. and live

  2216. by simple

  2217. rules because

  2218. our world

  2219. is simple.

  2220. But Lord,

  2221. we often fail

  2222. to realize

  2223. that government

  2224. is an

  2225. instrument you

  2226. use to

  2227. protect that

  2228. world for

  2229. us.

  2230. And we're

  2231. just naive

  2232. about so

  2233. many things.

  2234. Lord,

  2235. just work in

  2236. the hearts

  2237. of our

  2238. leaders.

  2239. But above

  2240. all, we

  2241. give you

  2242. praise and

  2243. just thanksgiving

  2244. that one day

  2245. all governments

  2246. will be brought

  2247. under the

  2248. supreme rule

  2249. of Christ

  2250. and his

  2251. kingdom will

  2252. endure for

  2253. all generations

  2254. and from

  2255. everlasting to

  2256. everlasting we'll

  2257. have a king

  2258. that is worthy

  2259. to be praised,

  2260. worthy to be

  2261. loved and

  2262. followed for

  2263. all eternity.

  2264. And that's

  2265. where we're

  2266. going, Lord.

  2267. So until then,

  2268. help us to

  2269. know how to

  2270. live in this

  2271. life in ways

  2272. that glorify

  2273. you.

  2274. In Christ's

  2275. name,

  2276. Amen.

  2277. Amen.

  2278. Amen.

  2279. Thank you.
