  1. Well, a very good morning to you all. It's very good to be here this day. I missed last week's service, not because I was sick, although I think a lot of people believe that to be the case, which is normally the case, so I can understand why, but I had a family, a whole family that was very, very sick, but we're doing much better today, and I do appreciate your prayers.

  2. I'm very, very thankful this morning to be here with you all, not to be sick. I'm very, very thankful for our glorious God who sent us a Savior to redeem our souls, that we might even come together and worship this day in spirit and in truth.

  3. I'm thankful this day to celebrate the first year birthday, I guess I should say, birthday of our little guy, Judah. Today is his birthday, and we're so blessed to have him, and I'm thankful today for God's written word to us.

  4. We are continuing our study through Romans, so you can go ahead and turn there to the book of Romans, chapter 13.

    Romans 13 chapter mention

  5. And we've been working our way through now this practical working out of these doctrines that he's presented to us in the first 11 chapters.

  6. We've come to chapter 12 and seen that our reasonable service is the sacrifice of our whole selves now to God in light of these glorious truths of the gospel, this salvation that we have by faith through grace.

  7. And he's gone on to talk about how we can sum up then our godliness, what that should look like in the little phrase at the beginning of verse 9 of chapter 12.

  8. Let love be genuine.

  9. And he begins to expand upon that, abhor what is evil, hold fast to what is good, and he works that out even more practically going through the end of chapter 12 and into the beginning of 13.

  10. A couple of weeks ago when I was with you, we talked about verses 8 through 10, when he starts out to say,

  11. Oh, no one anything except to love one another.

  12. He goes on to say that love is the fulfilling of the commandment, that if we love genuinely, as he said in verse 9 of chapter 12, then we're fulfilling the commandment.

  13. We are living as God would have us live.

  14. And he even expresses to us that this is a continuing debt of love.

  15. In light of what God has done for us, we're to be moved to continue on and on and on to love others, both in practical ways and with the gospel itself.

  16. Today we're going to look at verses 11 through 14, and we're going to address a particular part of it today, and we're going to deal with the rest of it next week.

  17. I think there's too much richness in it to try to cram it into one, but join with me in reading.

  18. We're going to read verse 8 all the way through the end of the chapter, through verse 14, to set some context for us.

  19. Owe no one anything except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

  20. For the commandments, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not covet,

  21. and any other commandment are summed up in this word, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  22. Love does no wrong to a neighbor, therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

  23. Besides this, you know the time that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep,

  24. for salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.

  25. The night is far gone, the day is at hand.

  26. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

  27. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness,

  28. not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy,

  29. but put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh to gratify its desires.

  30. Join me in praying for God's blessing on this time.

  31. Father, we praise you for your written word.

  32. It is a grace to us.

  33. We praise you also for the preaching of your word, not because I have any good in and of myself,

  34. but that the proclamation of your written word, the explanation of what it means, has in it power.

  35. And I pray, God, by your spirit, that you will ignite my tongue,

  36. and you will soften all of our hearts to receive the truths contained herein,

  37. and that apply them to our lives, that you might find us more obedient,

  38. being transformed in the image of your son as a result of our activity together in these coming moments.

  39. We pray this in Christ's name. Amen.

  40. So Paul has laid out for us this continuing debt of love,

  41. not a love by the world's standards,

  42. not our romantic comedy version of love,

  43. but a much, much higher version of love,

  44. an idealistic version of love.

  45. He says that it's a genuine love,

  46. a love that's rooted in the gospel truth,

  47. that seeks the great end of other people before yourself,

  48. that wants the best for all that you encounter.

  49. He says that's the fulfilling of the law,

  50. but then in verse 11, he begins to explain to us further

  51. how it is we're going to love this way

  52. by saying simply, besides this.

  53. So love is the fulfilling of the law,

  54. which is a great motivation in and of itself to love,

  55. but then he says, besides this, you know the time.

  56. He goes on to further explain that,

  57. but what an interesting little phrase here.

  58. Besides this,

  59. so another reason we ought to love this way

  60. is because we know the time.

  61. So I'm going to ask two questions this morning.

  62. The first is, what does he even mean?

  63. What does Paul mean by knowing the time?

  64. And some clues to that are in the following verses.

  65. He qualifies it.

  66. What does he mean by the time in 11b through 12a?

  67. If you will allow me to break these verses up in that way.

  68. He does so with a metaphor

  69. that seeks to explain the reality of the time

  70. that we all know.

  71. The metaphor.

  72. Look at it firstly.

  73. In 12a, he says,

  74. The night is far gone.

  75. The day is at hand.

  76. And then in 11b,

  77. The hours come for you to wake from sleep.

  78. So he's using this analogy to say to us,

  79. Listen, the night is gone.

  80. The night is over.

  81. It is now the daytime.

  82. And as those who know the time,

  83. speaking to believers in this case,

  84. those who are found in Christ,

  85. it's time for you to wake up.

  86. We ought not slumber any longer.

  87. We've been made alive in Christ,

  88. and now we ought to be about the activity of love.

  89. You can see also Ephesians 5, 1-21,

  90. verse 14,

  91. Awake, O sleeper,

  92. and rise from the dead,

  93. that Christ may shine on you.

  94. Speaking to those believers

  95. who had become lackadaisical in their Christian living,

  96. who had ceased pursuing Christ

  97. by loving those around them.

  98. Wake up.

  99. It's not nighttime any longer.

  100. It's now the day.

  101. Walk as one who is awake in the daytime.

  102. So this metaphor,

  103. to help us better understand

  104. understand the time

  105. that he's talking about,

  106. which helps us to understand

  107. a reality

  108. found in 11c,

  109. the third portion of verse 11.

  110. He says,

  111. For salvation is nearer to us now

  112. than when we first believed.

  113. What does he mean by that?

  114. So, we're to wake up,

  115. be in the day,

  116. walk, begin to move,

  117. and be active

  118. in this activity of genuine love.

  119. Because salvation is nearer to us now

  120. than when we first believed.

  121. Is Paul here suggesting

  122. that we must live in a certain way

  123. in order to obtain salvation?

  124. Is it coming,

  125. and if we're not living the right way,

  126. we won't be able to grab hold of it?

  127. Right?

  128. No.

  129. Clear and emphatic answer to that.

  130. He's not saying at all

  131. that it's our work

  132. that brings us salvation.

  133. Look back in the book of Romans,

  134. the first 11 chapters,

  135. to be certain,

  136. but just focus your attention

  137. on Romans 5, 1 and 2,

  138. where he says,

  139. Therefore,

  140. since we have been justified

  141. by faith,

  142. not by works,

  143. we've been justified by faith,

  144. we have peace with God

  145. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  146. Through Him,

  147. we also have obtained access

  148. by faith

  149. into this grace

  150. in which we stand.

  151. Right?

  152. So then what does he mean?

  153. Right?

  154. Look at the rest of verse 2,

  155. and we rejoice

  156. in the hope

  157. of the glory of God.

  158. So we have been redeemed,

  159. but we are waiting

  160. for the full consummation

  161. of that to happen.

  162. Right?

  163. We are waiting

  164. for the full realization

  165. of us being delivered

  166. from this world,

  167. from the weight

  168. and the baggage

  169. of our sinful flesh.

  170. Right?

  171. The very end

  172. of chapter 5, verse 2,

  173. and we rejoice

  174. in the hope

  175. of the glory of God.

  176. Right?

  177. We long for that day

  178. when our full salvation

  179. will be finished.

  180. There's a picture

  181. all throughout the scriptures

  182. in talking of the kingdom of God,

  183. of what has arrived

  184. and what is in the process

  185. of being,

  186. of arriving.

  187. Right?

  188. You have been sanctified

  189. as a believer.

  190. You've been set apart

  191. for God,

  192. but you are still

  193. being sanctified

  194. in that you're being

  195. perfectly set apart

  196. for God.

  197. Right?

  198. So that's what he's referring to

  199. as he's saying

  200. that it's coming.

  201. It's on its way.

  202. Salvation is close

  203. at hand.

  204. And what he's saying

  205. is that the reality

  206. that Paul's saying here

  207. is that believers

  208. know to be true

  209. of the time

  210. is that the kingdom

  211. of God

  212. is here.

  213. It's arrived.

  214. It's at hand.

  215. We've arrived

  216. at the juncture

  217. between the passing away

  218. of the reign

  219. of sin

  220. and death

  221. to the reign

  222. of Christ

  223. and the subsequent

  224. joy

  225. and hope

  226. and glory

  227. that accompanies him.

  228. Right?

  229. We stand

  230. between

  231. those two ages,

  232. those two worlds.

  233. Paul said

  234. in 1 Corinthians 10-11

  235. that the Old Testament

  236. and events

  237. were written down

  238. for our instruction

  239. on whom

  240. the end

  241. of the ages

  242. has come.

  243. That is,

  244. the transition

  245. between this age

  246. and the age to come

  247. has arrived

  248. in Jesus Christ.

  249. 2 Corinthians 5-17

  250. states,

  251. If anyone is in Christ,

  252. he is a new creation.

  253. The old has passed away.

  254. Behold,

  255. the new has come.

  256. So if you are found

  257. in Christ

  258. by your faith in Him,

  259. then you are

  260. a new creation.

  261. The new creation.

  262. It's come.

  263. Colossians 1-13

  264. reads,

  265. God delivered us

  266. from the domain

  267. of darkness

  268. and transferred us

  269. to the kingdom

  270. of His beloved Son.

  271. So then,

  272. the kingdom

  273. of our great deliverer

  274. has come.

  275. Just as Jesus said

  276. in Mark 1-15,

  277. the time is fulfilled

  278. and the kingdom of God

  279. is at hand.

  280. And now,

  281. we,

  282. as God's very own,

  283. long to see

  284. the full realization

  285. of this kingdom.

  286. Recall back in Romans 8-23,

  287. it says that

  288. we ourselves,

  289. who have the first fruits

  290. of the Spirit,

  291. groan inwardly

  292. as we wait eagerly

  293. for adoption of Son,

  294. the redemption

  295. of our bodies.

  296. That is the place

  297. in which we exist

  298. right now.

  299. The time

  300. that he's referring to.

  301. Many of you

  302. may not recognize,

  303. know what

  304. the Christ Family Church

  305. logo looks like.

  306. I'll encourage you

  307. as you leave

  308. to look up at the sign

  309. on the hill,

  310. the temporary sign,

  311. temporary slash permanent sign

  312. that's up on the hill.

  313. You'll notice that

  314. it's a silhouette of trees

  315. with the rising sun.

  316. That's meant to be

  317. a picture of this time

  318. that we all live in.

  319. Those of us

  320. who have been redeemed

  321. standing together,

  322. facing and awaiting

  323. the coming of our King,

  324. who is currently

  325. in the process

  326. of shedding light

  327. on this world.

  328. What happens though?

  329. Why is something

  330. a silhouette?

  331. You're looking at

  332. something from behind

  333. and it's in silhouette.

  334. It's because one side

  335. of it is exposed

  336. to the magnificent

  337. light of the sun

  338. and what's behind it

  339. is not.

  340. That's why it appears

  341. dark to you.

  342. There's no light

  343. on the backside of it.

  344. So we're in between

  345. those two places.

  346. This reign of sin

  347. and death

  348. where Satan prevails

  349. in this world

  350. and Christ,

  351. who has come

  352. and is ushering

  353. in his kingdom.

  354. kingdom.

  355. It's not an

  356. interstitial gap.

  357. That term makes sense

  358. to you, right?

  359. Where there's this gap

  360. where this kingdom

  361. is done

  362. and this kingdom

  363. is coming

  364. and we stand

  365. in between it,

  366. between two worlds

  367. in that way.

  368. But it looks

  369. more like this.

  370. It's a Venn diagram.

  371. It's an overlap

  372. of the two happening.

  373. We live in a very

  374. unique time,

  375. the age of the church,

  376. right?

  377. When this world

  378. and the things

  379. of this world

  380. still exist,

  381. but yet the new world,

  382. the new age,

  383. is on its way.

  384. This is the time

  385. that he is talking about.

  386. Turn with me

  387. to 2 Peter 3.

  388. Paul says,

  389. besides this,

  390. you,

  391. believers,

  392. those in Rome

  393. who are believers

  394. and now us,

  395. those of us

  396. who have Christ,

  397. you know the time.

  398. Peter wrote

  399. some similar language.

  400. Chapter 3 of 2 Peter

  401. beginning in

  402. verse 3.

  403. Knowing this first of all,

  404. that scoffers will come

  405. in the last days

  406. with scoffing,

  407. following their own

  408. sinful desires,

  409. they will say,

  410. where is the promise

  411. of his coming?

  412. For ever since

  413. the fathers fell asleep,

  414. all things are continuing

  415. as they were

  416. from the beginning

  417. of creation.

  418. Feels that way

  419. sometimes,

  420. doesn't it?

  421. Right?

  422. That the age

  423. is not passing away

  424. that we live in

  425. in this world

  426. and the age of Christ

  427. is not coming,

  428. it just seems to never come.

  429. The world just seems

  430. to get more and more

  431. sinful and evil.

  432. That's exactly what

  433. Peter's writing about here.

  434. It's exactly what he's saying,

  435. that these scoffers

  436. will come

  437. and they will say,

  438. nothing's changed.

  439. Right?

  440. You talk about this coming.

  441. Nothing's coming.

  442. Nothing's changing.

  443. Nothing's getting better.

  444. It's only getting worse.

  445. Verse 5,

  446. For they deliberately

  447. overlooked this fact,

  448. that the heavens existed

  449. long ago,

  450. and the earth was formed

  451. out of water

  452. and through water

  453. by the word of God,

  454. and that by means of these

  455. the world that then existed

  456. was deluged with water

  457. and perished.

  458. But by the same word,

  459. the heavens and earth

  460. that now exist

  461. are stored up for fire,

  462. being kept

  463. until the day of judgment

  464. and destruction

  465. of the ungodly.

  466. But do not overlook

  467. this one fact, beloved,

  468. that with the Lord

  469. one day is as a thousand years

  470. and a thousand years

  471. as one day.

  472. The Lord is not slow

  473. to fulfill His promise

  474. as some count slowness,

  475. but is patient towards you,

  476. not wishing that any

  477. should perish,

  478. but that all should

  479. reach repentance.

  480. But the day of the Lord

  481. will come like a thief,

  482. and the heavens will pass away

  483. with a war,

  484. and the heavenly bodies

  485. will be burned up

  486. and dissolved,

  487. and the earth

  488. and the works

  489. that are done on it

  490. will be exposed.

  491. Since all these things

  492. are thus to be dissolved,

  493. what sort of people

  494. ought you to be

  495. in lives of holiness

  496. and godliness,

  497. waiting for and hastening

  498. the coming of the day of God,

  499. because of which

  500. the heavens will be set

  501. on fire and dissolved,

  502. and the heavenly bodies

  503. will melt as they burn.

  504. But according to His promise,

  505. we are waiting for new heavens

  506. and a new earth

  507. in which righteousness dwells.

  508. Peter says the same thing

  509. to us here.

  510. You know the time,

  511. and when it doesn't feel like

  512. the old age is passing away

  513. and the new age is coming,

  514. we can rest sure

  515. that God is faithful

  516. to His promises.

  517. We can recognize

  518. that we're finite

  519. in our understanding of time,

  520. yet God is infinite.

  521. That's what He says, right?

  522. The earth,

  523. the heavens created,

  524. existed long ago.

  525. Long ago they existed.

  526. Outside of even your scope

  527. of eternity past,

  528. they existed.

  529. And God will in fact

  530. bring His promises

  531. to pass.

  532. So how then should we live?

  533. We should be living lives

  534. of holiness and godliness,

  535. waiting for and hastening

  536. the coming day of our Lord.

  537. What is Peter referring to?

  538. God's time is God's time.

  539. It is perfect.

  540. It will come to pass

  541. when it comes to pass.

  542. Why would He even use

  543. the word hastening?

  544. It's our great goal,

  545. our great mission as the church,

  546. to find everybody

  547. in this dark, dark world,

  548. every corner of it,

  549. every recess,

  550. the place that they're hiding,

  551. and share the good news

  552. of Jesus Christ with them.

  553. We want to try to press light

  554. into every possible dark place

  555. because when the church's numbers

  556. are complete,

  557. Christ will return.

  558. So He's speaking in human terms,

  559. right?

  560. There's an urgency

  561. that we should feel

  562. to get it done.

  563. God, He is patient.

  564. He will accomplish His purpose.

  565. It will come to pass

  566. when He wants it to come to pass,

  567. but we are to press on

  568. to love genuinely,

  569. to carry the gospel,

  570. the greatest expression of love,

  571. to everyone that we can

  572. in the hopes

  573. that it's going to happen soon.

  574. It's that dark shadow

  575. at our back

  576. that should drive us

  577. to the face of Christ.

  578. Turn your eyes upon Jesus.

  579. Look full in His wonderful face,

  580. and the things of earth

  581. will go strangely dim

  582. in the light of His glorious grace.

  583. That is the motivating factor.

  584. So let's ask the second question,

  585. even though I'm already

  586. working on answering it.

  587. So how does a knowledge

  588. of the time motivate us

  589. to love properly?

  590. How is it that it does so?

  591. So verse 12,

  592. back in Romans 12b,

  593. so then let us

  594. cast off the works of darkness

  595. and put on

  596. the armor of light.

  597. So we have this knowledge

  598. of the time,

  599. and He says,

  600. so then.

  601. So since we have this knowledge

  602. of the time,

  603. we understand the analogy,

  604. right?

  605. We ought to then

  606. walk properly.

  607. It's a casting off,

  608. a throwing away

  609. of the works of darkness

  610. and a putting on

  611. of the armor of light.

  612. Right?

  613. It's all these things

  614. He's been discussing

  615. in chapter 12

  616. and this part of 13

  617. up until now.

  618. It's all those things

  619. is what we ought to be

  620. putting on.

  621. Right?

  622. He's simply adding

  623. further clarity

  624. to everything He has said

  625. to the point so far

  626. with a summary.

  627. Right?

  628. He's helping us to see

  629. that as those of the light

  630. we should walk in light.

  631. Right?

  632. The night is gone.

  633. It's time to quit slumbering.

  634. It's time to live in the day.

  635. Not doing the things

  636. that are hidden in darkness,

  637. but doing the things

  638. that happen in the light.

  639. We're to cast off

  640. the one thing.

  641. Language is strong

  642. in the Greek.

  643. Throw it away.

  644. It's not a, like,

  645. take it off and put it down

  646. to be picked back up later.

  647. No, it's a casting off.

  648. It's a throwing it away.

  649. In disgust of it.

  650. Getting it away from you.

  651. And putting on

  652. another thing.

  653. We're to cast off

  654. the works of the past age

  655. and put on the works

  656. of the age to come.

  657. We're to cast off evil

  658. and put on righteousness.

  659. Right?

  660. Paul, in fact,

  661. further clarifies

  662. what he means

  663. by putting on

  664. the armor of light

  665. in verse 14

  666. when he says,

  667. put on the Lord

  668. Jesus Christ.

  669. We'll get into

  670. more practically

  671. what that looks like.

  672. What that looks like.

  673. When we are enthralled

  674. with who Jesus Christ is,

  675. the work of darkness

  676. is no longer beautiful to us.

  677. The work of light is.

  678. We'll talk about this

  679. more next week,

  680. but when you find yourself

  681. tempted by sin,

  682. when you find yourself

  683. loving it,

  684. it's because you don't

  685. love Christ

  686. the way you ought.

  687. It's because you don't

  688. behold him

  689. for who he truly is.

  690. His person and his work

  691. is drifting

  692. from your heart.

  693. put on Jesus Christ.

  694. Right?

  695. And you'll flee

  696. from the works of darkness.

  697. And you'll flee

  698. to the works of light.

  699. You will love it.

  700. As Christian,

  701. life is not easy.

  702. We've been put in this

  703. overlap.

  704. Right?

  705. We so desperately,

  706. at least I hope you do,

  707. want to be rid

  708. of your flesh.

  709. This baggage.

  710. Paul in Romans chapter 7

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  711. talks about this great

  712. struggle in himself

  713. and cries out at the end,

  714. who will deliver me

  715. from this body

  716. of death?

  717. He says,

  718. praise be to Jesus Christ

  719. our Lord.

  720. Right?

  721. What he's referring to

  722. when he talks about

  723. the body of death

  724. was a old

  725. Roman punishment.

  726. If you murdered somebody,

  727. they would tie that individual

  728. to your back.

  729. The dead body

  730. to your back.

  731. And as that flesh

  732. rotted away,

  733. that rot would spread

  734. to your body

  735. and it would kill you.

  736. You have to carry around

  737. the dead man

  738. on your back.

  739. And that's how Paul

  740. refers to his flesh.

  741. Right?

  742. His flesh and it's killing me.

  743. It's infecting

  744. my new nature.

  745. Right?

  746. Who would deliver me

  747. from it?

  748. Jesus Christ.

  749. Put on Jesus Christ.

  750. Cast off the old.

  751. Put on the new.

  752. Remember in Romans 12, 2.

  753. Not too long ago,

  754. we talked about this.

  755. Paul said,

  756. do not be conformed

  757. to this world.

  758. Also could be translated

  759. age.

  760. Right?

  761. It's the same word

  762. used here

  763. for the time.

  764. Okay?

  765. It's the same Greek word.

  766. He's talking about

  767. a period of time.

  768. Don't be conformed

  769. to this age

  770. that we live in,

  771. this time

  772. that we live in,

  773. the typical

  774. cultural

  775. normities.

  776. Don't be conformed

  777. to that,

  778. but be transformed.

  779. Be transformed.

  780. Be different

  781. then.

  782. Because you don't

  783. belong to this age

  784. any longer.

  785. In verse 1,

  786. it's our reasonable

  787. service because of

  788. who we are.

  789. Because of who we are.

  790. Because Christ has

  791. redeemed us.

  792. It's our reasonable

  793. service,

  794. our spiritual worship,

  795. to offer up

  796. our whole bodies

  797. as living

  798. sacrifices.

  799. So our knowledge

  800. of the time

  801. includes in it

  802. the knowledge

  803. of who we are.

  804. and that's the

  805. motivating factor.

  806. Understanding

  807. the time

  808. that you all

  809. know includes,

  810. if you properly

  811. understand it,

  812. it includes

  813. who you are

  814. in the time.

  815. One who's been

  816. freed from the

  817. bondage of sin.

  818. Body of flesh,

  819. carrying it around,

  820. absolutely.

  821. Temptation at

  822. every turn,

  823. absolutely.

  824. Failure at

  825. every turn,

  826. yes.

  827. Right?

  828. But you've been

  829. set free from

  830. that bondage.

  831. You don't have

  832. to go on

  833. sinning.

  834. You've been

  835. given life

  836. in Christ.

  837. You've been

  838. given His Spirit

  839. to abide in you

  840. and motivate

  841. proper living

  842. out of you.

  843. So many

  844. Christians

  845. these days

  846. are woe

  847. is me,

  848. Christians.

  849. My flesh,

  850. always at my

  851. heels,

  852. always tempting

  853. me.

  854. You've been

  855. set free.

  856. Live in that.

  857. You were a

  858. child of light.

  859. Walk as

  860. children of

  861. light.

  862. You don't

  863. have to be

  864. a slave

  865. to your

  866. sin.

  867. We've been

  868. redeemed,

  869. bought with

  870. a price.

  871. The blood

  872. of Jesus

  873. Christ.

  874. So it's

  875. knowing who

  876. we are.

  877. It's the

  878. recognition of

  879. this reality

  880. that we live

  881. in this

  882. overlap,

  883. but that we've

  884. been set

  885. apart to

  886. walk in

  887. the way

  888. of our

  889. Lord.

  890. Ephesians

  891. 5,

  892. 7,

  893. and 8

  894. says,

  895. Do not

  896. become

  897. partakers

  898. with them,

  899. for at

  900. one time

  901. you were

  902. darkness,

  903. but now

  904. you are

  905. light in

  906. the Lord.

  907. Walk

  908. as

  909. children

  910. of

  911. light.

  912. We close

  913. with a

  914. passage from

  915. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 5 chapter mention

  916. chapter 5,

  917. and please

  918. turn there

  919. with me.

  920. I'm going to

  921. read verses 1

  922. through 9

  923. together.

  924. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 5:1–9

  925. 5,

  926. verses 1

  927. through 9.

  928. Now,

  929. concerning the

  930. times and the

  931. seasons,

  932. brothers,

  933. you have no

  934. need to have

  935. anything written

  936. to you.

  937. You catch

  938. that?

  939. Besides this,

  940. you know

  941. the time.

  942. You have

  943. no need

  944. to have

  945. anything

  946. written to

  947. you,

  948. for you

  949. yourselves

  950. are fully

  951. aware that

  952. the day

  953. of the

  954. Lord will

  955. come like

  956. a thief

  957. in the

  958. night.

  959. While

  960. people are

  961. saying there

  962. is peace

  963. and security,

  964. then sudden

  965. destruction will

  966. come upon

  967. them as

  968. labor pains

  969. come upon

  970. a pregnant

  971. woman,

  972. and they

  973. will not

  974. escape.

  975. But you

  976. were not

  977. in darkness,

  978. brothers,

  979. for that day

  980. to surprise

  981. you like

  982. a thief,

  983. for you

  984. are all

  985. children of

  986. light,

  987. children of

  988. the day.

  989. We are

  990. not of

  991. the night

  992. or of

  993. the darkness.

  994. So then,

  995. let us

  996. not sleep

  997. as others

  998. do.

  999. He's not

  1000. speaking of

  1001. literal sleep,

  1002. right?

  1003. Do not

  1004. sleep as

  1005. others do,

  1006. but let

  1007. us keep

  1008. awake

  1009. and be

  1010. sober.

  1011. For those

  1012. who sleep

  1013. sleep at

  1014. night,

  1015. and those

  1016. who get

  1017. drunk

  1018. are drunk

  1019. at night.

  1020. But since

  1021. we belong

  1022. to the

  1023. day,

  1024. let us

  1025. be

  1026. sober,

  1027. having

  1028. put on

  1029. the breastplate

  1030. of faith

  1031. and love,

  1032. and for

  1033. a helmet

  1034. the hope

  1035. of salvation.

  1036. For God

  1037. has not

  1038. destined us

  1039. for wrath,

  1040. but to

  1041. obtain salvation

  1042. through our

  1043. Lord,

  1044. Jesus Christ.

  1045. The day

  1046. of salvation

  1047. is nearer

  1048. now than

  1049. when we

  1050. first

  1051. believe.

  1052. I can't

  1053. begin to

  1054. tell you

  1055. when the

  1056. world's

  1057. going to

  1058. end.

  1059. I wouldn't

  1060. be so

  1061. arrogant

  1062. to even

  1063. try.

  1064. I would

  1065. be wrong,

  1066. I can

  1067. guarantee

  1068. you that.

  1069. But I

  1070. can say

  1071. with confidence

  1072. to you,

  1073. it's nearer

  1074. now than

  1075. it was when

  1076. you first

  1077. believed.

  1078. We get

  1079. a little

  1080. bit closer

  1081. to it

  1082. as each

  1083. day passes.

  1084. And the

  1085. reality of

  1086. that,

  1087. that we

  1088. are children

  1089. of light,

  1090. we have

  1091. been redeemed,

  1092. we are

  1093. God's

  1094. own,

  1095. because of

  1096. what he's

  1097. done for

  1098. us,

  1099. and he's

  1100. coming back

  1101. to finish

  1102. it.

  1103. This world

  1104. will someday

  1105. pass away,

  1106. and he will

  1107. restore it,

  1108. we will have

  1109. a new

  1110. heaven,

  1111. and a new

  1112. earth,

  1113. that we

  1114. will abide

  1115. in forever.

  1116. Those that

  1117. don't know

  1118. Christ will

  1119. abide in

  1120. eternal

  1121. destruction.

  1122. The lake

  1123. of fire,

  1124. a miserable

  1125. place,

  1126. more for

  1127. its separation

  1128. from God

  1129. than from

  1130. its physical

  1131. torture.

  1132. That's the

  1133. reality of

  1134. what's to

  1135. come.

  1136. And that

  1137. is why

  1138. the knowledge

  1139. of the

  1140. time,

  1141. where we

  1142. are,

  1143. and what

  1144. we know

  1145. is coming,

  1146. should

  1147. motivate us

  1148. to genuine

  1149. love.

  1150. It's a

  1151. response

  1152. to the

  1153. great

  1154. love

  1155. that has

  1156. been shown

  1157. to us

  1158. in Jesus

  1159. Christ.

  1160. It's being

  1161. poured out

  1162. into us,

  1163. and it

  1164. should overflow

  1165. in everything

  1166. that we

  1167. do.

  1168. Let's pray

  1169. together.

  1170. together.
